May be. Yes, Sir! There it is! Can you believe it? Yes, for Gary

:00:53.:01:11.

Player! Oh, what a shot! Simply incredible. A life changer! Yes! At

:01:12.:01:20.

long last! Oh, wow! One of the greatest putts I've ever

:01:21.:01:32.

seen. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen

:01:33.:02:04.

and welcome to the 80th playing of the Masters. It is always such a

:02:05.:02:12.

special start to any masters. Not driving this year, Mr Arnold Palmer.

:02:13.:02:17.

Arnold, the king at 86, unable to swing this year. Please welcome Mr

:02:18.:02:25.

Gary Player! But he is as fit and competitive as ever at 80 years

:02:26.:02:32.

young. Oh, wow. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mr Jack

:02:33.:02:38.

Nicklaus! And at 76 years old, the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus on his

:02:39.:02:43.

30th anniversary of his sixth and final win at Augusta. Rarely have we

:02:44.:02:47.

seen so many patrons lining the first fairway to see golf's big

:02:48.:02:55.

three. Ladies and gentlemen, the 2016 Masters has now officially

:02:56.:03:00.

begun. Have fun! It is always such a thrill to see Palmer, Nicklaus and

:03:01.:03:04.

Player United at Augusta but now the stage belongs to younger men. This

:03:05.:03:09.

is the 80th playing of the Masters. Rarely have we seen so much

:03:10.:03:13.

anticipation and excitement ahead of the tournament. Much of the talk has

:03:14.:03:18.

centred on golf's so-called new big three, an Australian, an American

:03:19.:03:22.

and Northern Irishman. Between them, they have bagged five of the last

:03:23.:03:30.

six titles. -- major titles. It feels good to be able to walk around

:03:31.:03:37.

here is number one in the world. If I go out and I let my game just flow

:03:38.:03:43.

and play the way I know I can play, of course I can win on this golf

:03:44.:03:44.

course. I'm going to try to use last year as

:03:45.:03:58.

momentum. We know we are capable of playing this place. We have proven

:03:59.:04:01.

it to ourselves in the last two years. Just the jacket itself

:04:02.:04:11.

provide a real validation. But at the same time, you know, it is not

:04:12.:04:13.

easy, it is not easy to get. The world numbers one, two and three

:04:14.:04:37.

are part of an 89 strong field this year, the smallest for some 14

:04:38.:04:40.

years. Let's show you some of the big-name groups.

:04:41.:04:46.

This is the first round, a morning start for defending champion Jordan

:04:47.:04:51.

Spieth, in the company as is tradition of the reigning US amateur

:04:52.:04:56.

champion, Bryson DeChambeau and Europe's resurgent Paul Casey. It is

:04:57.:05:00.

Justin Rose's 10th attempt at Augusta, runner-up last year,

:05:01.:05:04.

alongside Welshman Jamie Donaldson and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year

:05:05.:05:07.

Daniel Berger. Augusta specialist Bubba Watson, with two wins in the

:05:08.:05:11.

last four years, as highly rated South African Branden Grace and Ian

:05:12.:05:15.

Poulter for company. World number one Jason Day of Australia comes

:05:16.:05:19.

here with back-to-back wins in America and an early afternoon start

:05:20.:05:23.

for him with Matt Kuchar and tee time runner-up Ernie Els. Grand slam

:05:24.:05:27.

seeking Rory McIlroy plays a waiting game in the very last three ball of

:05:28.:05:32.

the day. He plays with Bill Haas and two time major winner Martin Kaymer

:05:33.:05:38.

of Germany. Sunny conditions but blustery, gusty winds in various

:05:39.:05:39.

well. -- in there as well. Early headlines made by Tom Watson

:05:40.:05:49.

in his last appearance at the Masters. This is a long attempt for

:05:50.:05:53.

birdie and drained. Tom takes the lead! Jordan Spieth is hoping to

:05:54.:06:03.

join Tom Watson as a two time Augusta champion this year. All

:06:04.:06:06.

quiet in his round until this second to the third. The man who led from

:06:07.:06:12.

start to finish last year. That would set up a first birdie of the

:06:13.:06:18.

day for the defending champion. A very productive three ball that

:06:19.:06:22.

Spieth found himself in because his playing partner Paul Casey would

:06:23.:06:25.

join him at 1-under par on the very next hole, the short par-3 fourth.

:06:26.:06:31.

Paul has always enjoyed coming to Augusta. This is his 10th attempt at

:06:32.:06:38.

the club. Performing strongly on the US PGA Tour, full time now. That is

:06:39.:06:42.

a gimme birdie. Up ahead, Austria's big Bernd Wiesberger, loving his

:06:43.:06:47.

second visit to Georgia. This approach to the seventh would set up

:06:48.:06:54.

a second birdie of the day for him. The six Austrian, in the outright

:06:55.:06:58.

lead and he would putt that one, to make it to under the reigning French

:06:59.:07:03.

Open champion. As many of you will know, Englishman Lee Westwood

:07:04.:07:07.

certainly has a very strong record here in colluding runner up six

:07:08.:07:12.

years ago. -- here, including runner up. That one disappeared and he was

:07:13.:07:17.

into red numbers as well. 1-under par. And Zach Johnson, a man who

:07:18.:07:25.

triumphed here in 2007, and the man who last year won the Claret Jug to

:07:26.:07:29.

go with his green jacket. His tee shot at the 6th, he had a

:07:30.:07:35.

hole-in-one in the par-3 contest yesterday with his family and

:07:36.:07:38.

friends around him. Surely he could not get another, could he? It is

:07:39.:07:44.

tracking all right, but just a foot or so right of the pin. He would

:07:45.:07:50.

convert that to go to 1-under par. As we join it, there's an Austrian

:07:51.:07:55.

on top, as Europe seeks a first win this century in the Masters. It is

:07:56.:07:59.

to under par for Bernd Wiesberger and in the group at 1-under par, the

:08:00.:08:03.

likes of Lee Westwood, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler, highly fancied

:08:04.:08:07.

this year, defending champion Jordan Spieth and Paul Casey. So, deep

:08:08.:08:12.

greens and yellow flags, pink and white flowers, the scene is picture

:08:13.:08:15.

perfect as ever but more mesmerising as always is the drama and

:08:16.:08:19.

excitement this beautiful stage produces. Soaking it all in, Pauling

:08:20.:08:24.

Azinger, Andrew Cotter, Ken Brown and Peter Alliss.

:08:25.:08:27.

COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Hazel, and here we are at the burst, Justin

:08:28.:08:32.

Rose, one of England's favourites. A nice strike, head still, it is

:08:33.:08:36.

running nicely and oh, what a lovely way to start the day. Played one,

:08:37.:08:39.

1-under par. He has always played well here,

:08:40.:08:53.

Justin. I wonder if he will do it again? Title

:08:54.:09:03.

this is the two, the Jordan Spieth and right in the heart of the hole,

:09:04.:09:08.

off to a flyer, a couple under after six. Gorgeous. A bit of breeze

:09:09.:09:16.

about, not easy. Club selection is always tricky. Paul Casey at the

:09:17.:09:23.

7th, his second shot. This hole has been lengthened tremendously over

:09:24.:09:27.

the years. It is now very difficult to get your ball to stay on the

:09:28.:09:31.

green but Paul Casey does just that with the wind freshening. A narrow

:09:32.:09:35.

green, sloping from back to front, deep, deep bunkers all around. Jamie

:09:36.:09:42.

Donaldson at the 2nd. A birdie chance. It is slippery but he bangs

:09:43.:09:47.

it in the heart of the cup, made par at the 1st, birdie at the 2nd for

:09:48.:09:50.

Jamie Donaldson, the Ryder Cup hero. 1-under. Lovely. Casey at the 7th. A

:09:51.:10:02.

slider, left to right, for three. Right in the middle. Well done. He

:10:03.:10:08.

has always played well here, Paul Casey. Opened up with, well, you can

:10:09.:10:14.

see, seven played and two birdies, 2-under. A nice start.

:10:15.:10:22.

The first green, Matthew Fitzpatrick, 21 years old, a birdie

:10:23.:10:28.

chance. You don't get many birdies at the 1st. Does he like it? Oh, he

:10:29.:10:35.

does! Well done. The winner of the British Masters at the end of last

:10:36.:10:38.

year at Woburn. Perfect. The greens are true and pure, aren't they?

:10:39.:10:46.

Wonderful, amazing. Jordan Spieth with his third. He has laid up at

:10:47.:10:49.

the par-5 but playing up right the length of the green, here, though.

:10:50.:10:58.

He has zipped it, a little ledge, the pin at the back right of the

:10:59.:11:02.

great and it skips forward. Delightful, delightful shot. He

:11:03.:11:10.

really is a marvellous wedge player. Justin Rose with the old claw grip.

:11:11.:11:18.

Can you see his right hand? They follow like lemmings. Look at the

:11:19.:11:24.

borrower on this. Brown she comes, Rowntree... Oh! That was on the

:11:25.:11:29.

third, a birdie putt. -- she comes. An ugly six at the 2nd but redeemed

:11:30.:11:36.

by a couple of threes. 1-under. Up to the eighth and after a very good

:11:37.:11:39.

pitch from the defending champion, this is for birdie.

:11:40.:11:48.

He gets it and goes to 3-under. Scoring very good. The wind is

:11:49.:11:54.

freshening and the forecast is to be very windy this afternoon. That

:11:55.:11:59.

could change things considerably. That is how things stand, early on

:12:00.:12:04.

on this Thursday, Jordan Spieth recovering some of the form, that

:12:05.:12:08.

mystical form he had 12 months or so ago. You can see some familiar

:12:09.:12:13.

names, the European contingent going along very nicely indeed. A good

:12:14.:12:18.

mixture. But it is very, very early in the piece. There's a lot of three

:12:19.:12:22.

putting to happen before Sunday night.

:12:23.:12:30.

Just a brief glimpse, there come of Matthew Fitzpatrick, his second to

:12:31.:12:33.

the second, down the hill, the par-5. The breeze is into and that

:12:34.:12:41.

is a magical shot, feathering it through the narrow gap. It gathers

:12:42.:12:46.

up and he will have that... Go on, go on! It is a nasty, slick one down

:12:47.:12:52.

the hill but it will be for eagle. To the ninth, Spieth, the defending

:12:53.:12:56.

champion. Pops it in. That was for par. A very nice outward nine of 33.

:12:57.:13:06.

Not a blemish on the card. He has got that familiar look back. It is

:13:07.:13:13.

time for the old cashmere insert down here. This is slick. A short

:13:14.:13:22.

one for a three which he missed but we will go up the Donaldson who is

:13:23.:13:26.

going along very nicely. At the 5th, 1-under par. I tell a lie, he is

:13:27.:13:32.

going along even better than that, now 2-under par. Jamie Donaldson,

:13:33.:13:40.

the pride of Wales. Spieth at the 10th, on the downhill, as you can

:13:41.:13:44.

see, took a 3-wood, I fancy, from the team. Wind assisted. -- from the

:13:45.:13:50.

tee. This is a very good-looking green, when you look down from the

:13:51.:13:54.

high ground, it looks very inviting. That is online and a good one if it

:13:55.:13:59.

stays. Yes, good shot. Very nicely done. Our first look at Lee

:14:00.:14:05.

Westwood, whose record here is pretty good. But this is for par at

:14:06.:14:09.

the short 12th. Oh, it dribbles by the edge. So many shots are just

:14:10.:14:19.

frittered away at the par-3s. Outside chance of a birdie four Paul

:14:20.:14:25.

Casey. -- a birdie, four Paul Casey. Left-to-right. 3-under par. Out in

:14:26.:14:34.

34. A scarce birdie at the 10th, the 10th and 11th are very hard par

:14:35.:14:42.

fors. Fitzpatrick. On the fourth, 1-under, look where he is aiming

:14:43.:14:46.

this one. Dealing it down the left-hand side. Will it? It will.

:14:47.:14:52.

Very nicely done indeed. He stays at 1-under par. Going along very

:14:53.:15:01.

sweetly for a newcomer. Under the cup, putting uphill, Spieth, the

:15:02.:15:04.

easiest six footer on the 10th and in it goes, 4-under par, the

:15:05.:15:09.

outright leader. He has played the Masters twice before, second and

:15:10.:15:13.

first last year, the defending champion off to a real flyer.

:15:14.:15:18.

Superb. Yes, his record is quite extraordinary here, for such a

:15:19.:15:21.

useful player. A check on the leaderboard. -- youthful player.

:15:22.:15:29.

Spieth has completed ten, alongside Paul Casey. And some familiar names,

:15:30.:15:32.

the cream of the game at this moment, towards the top of the

:15:33.:15:42.

leaderboard. Looking good. Spieth on the 11th, in a bit of trouble, here.

:15:43.:15:47.

Trying to keep his feet stable on the pine needles, or the pine straw,

:15:48.:15:52.

as they call it, here. It sounded like a good contact. Found the

:15:53.:15:59.

little gap. "Yes", they cried. That is a bit cruel. That was a horrible

:16:00.:16:05.

first jump. Stay there, stay there. Do you know what? It has. That is a

:16:06.:16:10.

huge bit of fortune after some poor fortune initially because that was a

:16:11.:16:21.

great escape. He got away with it. Paul Casey with his second shot at

:16:22.:16:27.

the 11th. 227 yards. They have a Liebrich the tea bag at the 11th

:16:28.:16:37.

over the years. -- the tee back. The players want to ten to bail out to

:16:38.:16:41.

the right for safety, anything to avoid the left. That is a bailout

:16:42.:16:45.

for Paul Casey into the back bunker. That will be a dicey second shot.

:16:46.:16:55.

Probably affected a lot by the wind. Its world a lot on the 11th. Lee

:16:56.:16:59.

Westwood with a birdie attempt to get back into red figures. Sheltered

:17:00.:17:05.

from the winds down there by the giant trees. This one creaks in the

:17:06.:17:11.

right half. That shot that went on the 12th is gathered up on the

:17:12.:17:17.

following hole. -- creeps in. Paul Casey played a decent bunker shot

:17:18.:17:21.

and this putt will be so fast, putting downhill towards the water.

:17:22.:17:30.

So many putts at Augusta, you maybe have given it slightly to the side

:17:31.:17:38.

of the centre. -- have two hit it slightly. Aggressive stroke but no.

:17:39.:17:43.

A dropped shot for Paul Casey, he goes back to 2-under par. Europe's

:17:44.:17:52.

Ryder Cup captain, the last year of his five-year exemption for winning

:17:53.:17:56.

the 2011 Open, so his last chance at the Masters unless of course he

:17:57.:17:59.

continues to do that and finishes well enough. Other things on his

:18:00.:18:03.

mind this year. It is a very hard job and takes up a lot of your time

:18:04.:18:09.

but Darren Clarke is under par. And now Jordan Spieth for par at the

:18:10.:18:13.

11th after a bad break. It might have been a good break, to stay up.

:18:14.:18:20.

This is for a two putt from the collar. Oh, yeah, he is always so

:18:21.:18:28.

steady on those. Up to the 12th. A good part, there, for Jordan. Brandt

:18:29.:18:35.

Snedeker has made a bright start. A decent record at the Masters as

:18:36.:18:39.

well. He was the halfway lead two or three years ago. This is well

:18:40.:18:45.

judged. Very well judged indeed. It was going at some pace as well

:18:46.:18:50.

towards the end but it sneaks in and Snedeker with two birdies in the

:18:51.:18:54.

first four holes, linking up with Ben Crenshaw as an adviser, all his

:18:55.:18:58.

knowledge of the Masters. Jordan Bunce Mac tee shot at the 12th, only

:18:59.:19:04.

156 yards but a very narrow green, the fourth most difficult hole at

:19:05.:19:13.

this point. That is OK, actually. Better than being in the bunker,

:19:14.:19:21.

that is for sure. Bubba Watson, and I'm noticing that Hideki Matsuyama

:19:22.:19:24.

has birdied the ninth to go to 2-under par, the man who finished so

:19:25.:19:29.

strongly last year. Watson, well, he joins in with the birdies and many

:19:30.:19:32.

think he may be ready to win again, here. He does like the even years.

:19:33.:19:42.

Jordan came up a bit short on his effort from just over the green at

:19:43.:19:47.

12. This is for par. It looks so square, look how nice, his

:19:48.:19:52.

shoulders, hips and feet all matched up. Well judged. He loves getting

:19:53.:19:53.

Latin! -- getting that in. Daniel Berger, his first Masters,

:19:54.:20:11.

the man who lost in a play-off to Padraig Harrington at the Honda last

:20:12.:20:17.

year. This is rolling well. Beautifully done by Berger. Three

:20:18.:20:24.

birdies in the first eight holes in his first Masters. Back to the 12th

:20:25.:20:36.

and Paul Casey for bogey. He just cleans that up. Ernie Els for par on

:20:37.:20:46.

the first. He found the fairway with his drive, unsuccessful with the

:20:47.:20:52.

birdie but the sunlight comes and goes... Oh, goodness, did you see

:20:53.:20:57.

the putter as well, it just went off in his hand. He flinched on that

:20:58.:21:06.

one. My goodness, that was careless. He has got to move on. What is going

:21:07.:21:11.

on? He looks at his caddy. Jason Day turns away. How many is that now?

:21:12.:21:20.

One, two, three, four... Four putts already. I think that is right. This

:21:21.:21:25.

will be his fifth putt. He missed the green and pitched up to there

:21:26.:21:28.

and had that putt 4-part right here earlier. -- putt the level macro. My

:21:29.:21:35.

goodness. That is sad, that is all you can say about that. Very, very

:21:36.:21:40.

sad. Golfers will understand. People might mock him but that is horrible.

:21:41.:21:51.

That is a ten. Lee Westwood at 16, playing 168 yards today. Actually a

:21:52.:21:55.

pretty easy hole location. In the left portion of the green. Yes, well

:21:56.:22:01.

done. Anything to the right of the flag should be towards the hole

:22:02.:22:14.

today. -- should feed towards. Paul Casey, a good angle to look at the

:22:15.:22:18.

hanging lie he has got, slight downslope at the par-5. You need a

:22:19.:22:26.

steely nerve. The creek is in front to the right of the green. A twirl

:22:27.:22:30.

of the club is all with a good sign. Is it heading left? Not at all! What

:22:31.:22:37.

a shot from Paul Casey! Eagle putt to come. You are right, the twhirl

:22:38.:22:42.

is a dead giveaway. This is a shot that Masters champions seem to make

:22:43.:22:47.

a easy. But I can tell you first hand it is not an easy shot. A

:22:48.:22:52.

hanging lie, Jordan Spieth with his second at the 13th. Another terrific

:22:53.:23:03.

effort the Jordan Spieth. What is it with him, Paul? He comes alive when

:23:04.:23:09.

he comes here. It is like that with some players, major Championship can

:23:10.:23:12.

get some players to some point where it is a fault but if you can't

:23:13.:23:17.

control your emotion... Lee Westwood for his two on the 16th. Nicely

:23:18.:23:26.

judged. Justin Rose has birdied the ninth so the British challenge is

:23:27.:23:31.

looking pretty robust at the moment. That must have been Jordan Spieth's

:23:32.:23:35.

third shot at 13. This is for birdie. Yes, nicely done.

:23:36.:23:50.

It was two putts in the end. He looks so solid over the short putts.

:23:51.:24:02.

Jason Day, the world number one. His second... I wonder if he might be

:24:03.:24:06.

affected by playing with Ernie Els? He is friends with Ernie and that

:24:07.:24:09.

would be horrible for any golfer to watch. I totally agree. You have got

:24:10.:24:16.

to just stay focused on what you are doing and let the guys around you go

:24:17.:24:20.

away. What a shot from Jason Day, down the hill at the 2nd. An

:24:21.:24:22.

opportunity for eagle, here. Leaving himself a nice uphill putt

:24:23.:24:36.

as well. To another par-5, deeper in the course and Paul Casey for

:24:37.:24:40.

birdie. His group is going well, Casey and Spieth and Bryson

:24:41.:24:44.

DeChambeau, the third member, not playing too badly either. A mixed

:24:45.:24:50.

bag on the back nine for Casey. Jason Day it a monster tee second

:24:51.:24:56.

shock to hear, this is for eagle, not a lot of breaking this putt and

:24:57.:25:00.

he has drained it. A good start for Jason Day. Eagle at the 2nd. That

:25:01.:25:10.

will bring home some crystal. So this is the way it stands at the

:25:11.:25:14.

moment and Jordan Spieth, what a record at the Masters, second on his

:25:15.:25:17.

first appearance a couple of years ago and then he won and he's on top

:25:18.:25:20.

of the board again, two shots clear of Daniel Berger in his first

:25:21.:25:24.

Masters, Westwood, Paul Casey and Rose alongside the world number one,

:25:25.:25:28.

Jason Day and Bryson DeChambeau, the amateur champion also on the first

:25:29.:25:34.

paid. Those on the second page mostly in the early part of their

:25:35.:25:43.

rounds. Justin Rose down the hill at the 10th. Not a great chance, you

:25:44.:25:46.

just want to judge the speed right. Look at how high he had to play

:25:47.:25:52.

this. Oh, wow. You have got to be kidding me, Justin Rose! Get a claw

:25:53.:25:59.

grip right now. I'm switching! Well done.

:26:00.:26:09.

Here we are, the campaign begins for Rory McIlroy. The big, blue driver

:26:10.:26:17.

and away we go. The wind is beginning to below around the

:26:18.:26:23.

course. The applause dies away. -- to below. Right-hand bunker, is he

:26:24.:26:28.

heading that way? Well, use not. He's got a bit more room than we

:26:29.:26:32.

think, there. He might be OK standing above ground, just. Ian

:26:33.:26:43.

Poulter, downhill at the 6th, hole cut in the front left portion of the

:26:44.:26:49.

green. It may be the easiest hole location on the entire putting

:26:50.:26:52.

surface and he has hit a beauty, a virtual gimme, there. That could get

:26:53.:27:02.

him to 1-under par. Paul Casey has found the sand with his second on

:27:03.:27:06.

the par-5 15th, all the way down the green he comes, looks to have judged

:27:07.:27:10.

this pretty well, just catches the slope and keeps on going. It keeps

:27:11.:27:16.

on going. Beautifully played by Casey. All of that for his birdie

:27:17.:27:22.

four. A bailout shot to the bunker on the right. Poulter on 1-under

:27:23.:27:28.

par, actually, and this is to get to 2-under. Pretty routine right here,

:27:29.:27:34.

I would think. Yet. Well done. Good start for Ian Poulter. Still looking

:27:35.:27:43.

for his first major. Scott Piercy, it looks like. Yes, it is. A chance

:27:44.:27:50.

to go to 3-under par. This tells you what it has -- what a start it has

:27:51.:27:58.

been, we are at the 4th. No rapture is raw from the patrons but Scott

:27:59.:28:02.

Piercy is moving along well. -- rapturous sound from the patrons.

:28:03.:28:06.

Paul Casey played a beautiful kind of fat run down the hill to 15 and

:28:07.:28:13.

this is for birdie. -- fat run. He barely breathed on the ball and it

:28:14.:28:17.

reached the hole. Paul Casey moves to 3-under par. John McLaren on his

:28:18.:28:25.

bag this week, Paul Casey. Jason Day has got a bit of borrow in this one.

:28:26.:28:34.

Just tickles it left to right. Nice, I mean, right in the middle for

:28:35.:28:40.

Jason Day. I wonder if he might be upset by that seven putt from Ernie

:28:41.:28:43.

Els from his playing partner at the 1st but Jason Day is absolutely

:28:44.:28:49.

focused, and eagle and a birdie. Paul Casey's tee-shot is on at 16.

:28:50.:29:00.

Oh, he has almost flown it in! We call that the all finish at home.

:29:01.:29:04.

You can just about give him that. He will go to 4-under par.

:29:05.:29:11.

Brandt Snedeker, on this par-5 8th hole. Outstanding motion. Doesn't

:29:12.:29:23.

take any time at all over the putts, and in it goes. Dropped a shot at

:29:24.:29:30.

the par-3 sixth, but three are these as well. I've already given Paul

:29:31.:29:34.

Casey this, but I tell you, there's a lot of chicken on that bone, this

:29:35.:29:39.

is far from a gimme to get to 4-under. Down the hill. He just

:29:40.:29:47.

touched it. Catches the left side and drops, well done. So these are

:29:48.:29:54.

the movers and shakers on the first day, and Jordan Speith out in front

:29:55.:29:58.

as he so often has been at the Masters. Paul Casey going along very

:29:59.:30:03.

nicely, alongside Jordan Spieth. What a shot from the Irishman.

:30:04.:30:08.

Should go to 2-under par. Let's have a look at Justin Rose

:30:09.:30:31.

here at the 13th, this for birdie. Chance to get to 3-under par. Oh

:30:32.:30:44.

yes. Nicely holed. Many felt Justin should be the pretournament

:30:45.:30:48.

favourite here. He's proving them right.

:30:49.:30:52.

In 2004, he led and then this man took over the British challenge,

:30:53.:30:59.

Casey. The crowd was excited about that. Casey slips back, shame. Rory

:31:00.:31:09.

McIlroy, left him two beauties coming up just short, looks like he

:31:10.:31:13.

will hit a delicate chip shot up the hill. A swirly little bounce but

:31:14.:31:22.

should be just short enough to tab that in four McIlroy. The Watson

:31:23.:31:28.

with a fetching light blue glove today. 2-under par at the moment.

:31:29.:31:36.

And what a third shot at the par-5. Something must have gone wrong with

:31:37.:31:40.

his tee shot or his second, that he's in fine position now. Second

:31:41.:31:44.

shot up the hill. From here you cannot see the bottom of the' flag.

:31:45.:31:51.

It's difficult to judge. Maybe a half a club or so extra. You can

:31:52.:31:59.

tell he wants to cut it in. Is it the right distance? Boy, is it ever!

:32:00.:32:05.

Sauber shot. 18 is playing the second most difficult hole on the

:32:06.:32:12.

course today. Shane Lowry has started very well. Wonderful short

:32:13.:32:20.

game that should suit him round here, and gets the parts are working

:32:21.:32:28.

as well. There's a bit of support. Jordan Spieth, not a whole lot of

:32:29.:32:33.

break in this putt. Might go to the back of the green. Gone the other

:32:34.:32:41.

way, but he's made it! He made it look easy! What a round of golf.

:32:42.:32:48.

Bogey free. Six birdies the Jordan Spieth, 6-under par. The early

:32:49.:32:53.

clubhouse leader. That is quite a statement from the defending

:32:54.:33:03.

champion. Can McIlroy get his challenge going and keep it here?

:33:04.:33:09.

1-under par at the moment here. That never really had a chance. He fired

:33:10.:33:15.

it right of the hole. Paul Casey. Down the hill. He's had a lot of

:33:16.:33:24.

these tricky ones down the hill. Oh yes, no problem. Good start for Paul

:33:25.:33:30.

Casey. 3-under par 69, just three back. He gets to watch Jordan Spieth

:33:31.:33:35.

again all day tomorrow. Nice to be able to stay in touch with the

:33:36.:33:42.

leaders. Well, what a leaderboard already. Jordan Spieth, the

:33:43.:33:48.

champion, opening with a 66. He went 64, 66 in his opening two rounds

:33:49.:33:52.

last year. Let's hear from the man on top of the leaderboard. Jordan,

:33:53.:33:56.

you've finished second in this tournament two years ago and you won

:33:57.:34:01.

it last year. How do you rate that round of 66? As good as any. The

:34:02.:34:06.

first two rounds last year, the second round last year trying to

:34:07.:34:10.

back up the 64 was a really solid 6-under round. The first round of

:34:11.:34:14.

the is the was really special and I guess somewhat historic. But to come

:34:15.:34:19.

here today in these conditions, I was accepting 2- under, I would have

:34:20.:34:24.

signed for it right away and I wouldn't have played today! Grabbing

:34:25.:34:30.

four extra strokes out there with no bogeys, just awesome. It's great to

:34:31.:34:34.

be in this position again. It's the first round, a long way to go. Is it

:34:35.:34:38.

simply a case of a return to Augusta, a return to the form of

:34:39.:34:44.

2015? No, I feel this has been coming in recent weeks. At Houston I

:34:45.:34:48.

was starting to get it together, I just hit a couple of bad balls and

:34:49.:34:53.

hit balls into the water. Here I gave more respect to the golf course

:34:54.:34:57.

than I did last week but I felt my game was there. You mentioned last

:34:58.:35:02.

year you enjoyed the stress and confidence of competing in this

:35:03.:35:05.

tournament, do you feel those same feelings again today? Yes I do. It's

:35:06.:35:11.

tough because it's so soon after the round that I was obviously very

:35:12.:35:16.

pumped up on a lot of those putts, even the par saves. Saw some fist

:35:17.:35:21.

pumps today, I haven't given fist pumps since maybe Hawaii. There is

:35:22.:35:26.

certainly emotion out there. I know where I am and I enjoy where I am

:35:27.:35:31.

and how I'm playing. That one on 18, I was very happy there. It will be

:35:32.:35:35.

interesting to see the difference, if there is a difference, in

:35:36.:35:39.

sleeping on a lead. We enjoyed watching you, well done today.

:35:40.:35:44.

Jason Day, third shot at the long uphill par-5 8th hole. Clipped it

:35:45.:35:54.

up, will it stop? Oh! How do they do that? Very well done to my coming in

:35:55.:36:00.

from the wrong side. Very good shot. Shane Lowry. A few birdies at the

:36:01.:36:07.

5th with this back pain and shame makes another one. How is that for

:36:08.:36:11.

an opening gambit? -- bag pin. Four birdies in a row, Kenneth.

:36:12.:36:22.

Smarter than the average bear! Jason Day for a birdie, he has played

:36:23.:36:27.

beautifully since he had to watch dear old Ernie Els take seven putts.

:36:28.:36:34.

But it hasn't affected him, that is the way you do it, line them up and

:36:35.:36:40.

knock them in. The 15th green and Justin Rose as holed it nicely. He

:36:41.:36:51.

moves to four under. Looking very confident with his new grip.

:36:52.:36:59.

Jason Day now, after a beautiful drive at the 9th. Uphill. This is a

:37:00.:37:11.

dangerous hole. How often have we seen beautiful shots pitch up at the

:37:12.:37:16.

flag, spin and come 30, 40 yards down that hill. It happened to Greg

:37:17.:37:21.

Norman, didn't it? Played a beautiful shot in fact but ended up

:37:22.:37:26.

nowhere near. Let's see what Day can do. Clipped that nicely, it's right

:37:27.:37:32.

on target. Oh! You see, the spin was just about right. They can say what

:37:33.:37:36.

they like, he had no idea he was going to get that sort of control

:37:37.:37:41.

over it, an act of God. The golfing gods decreed you've been a good lad,

:37:42.:37:45.

I will let it stop close. And it did! Scott Piercy. Little

:37:46.:37:55.

right-to-left. Just tumbled into the cup. They are making a mockery of

:37:56.:38:02.

the game, Kenneth! This is a scoring course, I have to say, but this is

:38:03.:38:09.

exceptional. Breezy and some pretty tough pins on a number of the

:38:10.:38:15.

greens. Now then, Justin Rose for a par. Just going to miss on the

:38:16.:38:17.

right. That's a shot dropped. He moves away. Paul Casey has played

:38:18.:38:22.

a good round. Let's hear from him. Paul, how much did you enjoy that

:38:23.:38:35.

round of 69 today in the company of Jordan? It was fantastic, a joy to

:38:36.:38:41.

be playing with a defending champion. I'm not sure I've been

:38:42.:38:44.

privileged to have been paired in that group before. To get up close

:38:45.:38:49.

and personal and see how he really took the golf course apart today was

:38:50.:38:53.

really impressive. Good group, we had wonderful momentum right from

:38:54.:38:56.

the beginning. I'm looking forward to more tomorrow. You said of all

:38:57.:39:00.

the Majors you play you are most comfortable and confident here at

:39:01.:39:05.

Augusta. Why is that? Two reasons. I think my game suits this golf course

:39:06.:39:10.

very nicely. Second, we get to come back every single year so you know

:39:11.:39:14.

it so well. My first trip here was 2004 and I got to play with Floyd

:39:15.:39:18.

and Langer and Crenshaw and guys like that and I learned the course

:39:19.:39:26.

quickly and some secrets. The other tournaments I'm comfortable at but

:39:27.:39:32.

with the course is different every year... At Augusta I know it suits

:39:33.:39:35.

me. COMMENTATOR: Rory McIlroy, second

:39:36.:39:40.

shot, level par. That's a beauty. Will it just trundle back a bit? No.

:39:41.:39:48.

That's a fine shot, playing in the worst of the conditions. He has

:39:49.:39:57.

holed a lot of beauties today. It hopped in the economic lacking in

:39:58.:40:02.

pace. Seemed a little something on the green. The tense catches a few

:40:03.:40:09.

players out and it has caught him out. 10th, 11th, 12th, very

:40:10.:40:15.

difficult today. A couple of shots behind Jordan Spieth. McIlroy, 7th

:40:16.:40:23.

hole. Just needs a little tickle down the left. Will it? Yes. I

:40:24.:40:28.

thought it was just going to squeeze by on the outside, but he birdies

:40:29.:40:33.

that. One dropped shot, at the par-3 four. Looking tidy.

:40:34.:40:39.

Now, Bubba Watson. Can he finish it off at the 11th? This is to stay at

:40:40.:40:49.

2-under. Oh! That was a Tripoli one, that was a nervy prod.

:40:50.:40:54.

-- that was a dribbly one. Running well, nicely done. Always extremely

:40:55.:41:09.

satisfying to make a two at the 12th. Par-5 to come. Justin Rose.

:41:10.:41:18.

Coming up the last hole, 3-under now. Has he hit it on to the top

:41:19.:41:26.

level? Come along... Yes he has. That's a good result. Lovely shot.

:41:27.:41:33.

Chance for a three. Let's see if we can see a bit of Shane Lowry magic

:41:34.:41:37.

with one of his wages. Lovely crisp sound. That was delightfully played.

:41:38.:41:44.

The green running away from him and he had to land it on a sixpence and

:41:45.:41:48.

he did it beautifully. Cracking shot, he will have that for a

:41:49.:41:53.

birdie. To the 18th, Justin Rose after that splendid second. This is

:41:54.:41:58.

for a birdie three, and he pushed it a little bit. We've seen so much

:41:59.:42:08.

golf from Augusta, you would think they would know the run of the

:42:09.:42:14.

greens. But it seems to change sometimes. It's an extraordinary

:42:15.:42:21.

fact but it is true. Now, Shane Lowry at the 8th, after that

:42:22.:42:24.

delightful pitch, which was very tricky. This for a birdie. He had

:42:25.:42:31.

four birdies in the first five holes and now he's got another birdie. He

:42:32.:42:35.

is playing quite beautifully. 5-under par.

:42:36.:42:39.

STUDIO Justin Rose was right there at the

:42:40.:42:45.

end of last year's masters, that tied second place, and he has set

:42:46.:42:51.

off with great purpose again, the 35-year-old Englishman. Let's get

:42:52.:42:56.

Justin's thoughts on what has been a very taxing day.

:42:57.:42:59.

That is the fifth time you've opened up a round in the 60s here at

:43:00.:43:04.

Augusta, how pleased argue with what you did today? I'm very pleased with

:43:05.:43:09.

that first round. Some first rounds are easier than others, conditions

:43:10.:43:12.

wise. That is probably one of the trickier ones I've played. The pro

:43:13.:43:18.

here, JJ, was joking with me that I always start here with a round in

:43:19.:43:21.

the 60s, so I'm trying to live up to that reputation!

:43:22.:43:26.

Danny Willett, birdie putt at the 9th. Pretty brave to get it left of

:43:27.:43:32.

that hole location and beautifully stroked. That is quite a birdie

:43:33.:43:34.

there, for Danny Willett. Matthew Fitzpatrick 16th hole,

:43:35.:43:46.

1-under par. Par finish from here would be a very good opening round

:43:47.:43:52.

for the young fellow. That could be... Oh! It stuck. It's thinking

:43:53.:43:57.

about it... No. Good shot, though. Rory McIlroy's second, after a

:43:58.:44:11.

massive tee shot. Oh yeah. Couldn't have been much more than a sand

:44:12.:44:21.

wedge for Rory. Fitzpatrick for his two, at the 16th. It dobbled in,

:44:22.:44:36.

well done. Poulter, terrific tee shot. Hit his second to hear. He's

:44:37.:44:39.

got to get this up the hill. An extremely slow putt through the

:44:40.:44:44.

shadows, but he's got this for eagle. He's given it a wrap. Will it

:44:45.:44:48.

be enough? Good effort. After a terrific second shot for

:44:49.:45:03.

Rory. Great birdie down the hill. Now Rory McIlroy 2-under par, making

:45:04.:45:13.

a little noise here on day one. Now Ian Poulter for birdie, just to

:45:14.:45:14.

clean this up a little bit. Yes. Well done. Red figures now, for

:45:15.:45:20.

Ian. Just watch his feet, folks. See if

:45:21.:45:33.

he stays tied to the ground or if he slips a little bit. Boy, this is

:45:34.:45:41.

pretty risky. And he's pulled it off! Well, he's got the heart of a

:45:42.:45:49.

champion, no doubt about it. That is a brave effort from the pine straw.

:45:50.:45:55.

Ian Poulter at the 14th. Playing very quickly. And that's a beauty.

:45:56.:46:05.

That is a magnificent second shot on this treacherous green. The

:46:06.:46:13.

colourful Billy Horschel. At 18. The hole cut on the back right, you've

:46:14.:46:18.

got to get it on top, and he's done it. Look at it run. Good shot.

:46:19.:46:23.

Poulter. Solidly done. Poulter in a tie for

:46:24.:46:37.

seventh at a couple under par. Jason Day eagled the second. At the 13th,

:46:38.:46:46.

chance for a second big Bird of the day. He hit it! That was a very good

:46:47.:46:53.

effort. It will be a kick in effort for birdie for Jason Day. What a

:46:54.:46:57.

four, from the pine needles down on the right-hand side. Jason Day will

:46:58.:47:02.

move back up to within one shot of Jordan Spieth. Matt Fitzpatrick, to

:47:03.:47:13.

finish out here. Nicely done. Very, very good round from Matt

:47:14.:47:18.

Fitzpatrick. He made his debut last year and missed the cut but opens

:47:19.:47:24.

with a 1-under par 71 in his second year here at Augusta. Danny Lee,

:47:25.:47:33.

7-iron. Front left pin position today. Fairly friendly. Wonderful

:47:34.:47:42.

shot. From the New Zealander, South Korean born but raised in New

:47:43.:47:49.

Zealand. Chance to go to 4-under. Let's see just how brave he can be,

:47:50.:47:56.

5-under par. Well, there's an old Irish shot. Getting down under the

:47:57.:48:01.

wind, trying to hold it up with that wind. What a shot from Shane Lowry.

:48:02.:48:06.

That's a masterclass in dealing with the wind. You don't often see that

:48:07.:48:12.

at Augusta. That is how it was intended to be played. Danny Lee

:48:13.:48:18.

with another beautiful shot here at 17, we've seen a lot of them but not

:48:19.:48:24.

many holed. That is dead centre for Danny Lee. 4-under par now. On day

:48:25.:48:26.

one of the Masters. McIlroy then for his par on the

:48:27.:48:39.

11th. No, so McIlroy starts Amen Corner with a drop shot. Now finally

:48:40.:48:45.

Lowry, after rolling and getting relief from the sprinkler, he has

:48:46.:48:53.

this for par. Slow down. This green is flat and very, very fast. Ian

:48:54.:48:57.

Poulter at the 16th. A far friendlier par-3 than the

:48:58.:49:07.

12th. You are making decisions on every shot out here, you know,

:49:08.:49:12.

Andrew. Here you've got to decide, am I going to be brave enough to go

:49:13.:49:16.

at it? Am I going to sling it out to the right? That is a nice result.

:49:17.:49:26.

Now Jason Day, still just a shot behind Jordan Spieth but this to

:49:27.:49:27.

remain there. Well, he's made a bit of a mess of

:49:28.:49:40.

that hole. He hasn't done anything tightly there at all. Loose drive,

:49:41.:49:48.

had to lay up. Poor pitch and a poor second. A six at the 15th, back to

:49:49.:49:56.

four. Now, Poulter. Chance to get to 3-under. Looks good, looks very

:49:57.:50:03.

good. Poulter moves to 3-under. Now in a tie with Casey and Rose, who

:50:04.:50:13.

have finished their rounds. To the 16th tee, Jason Day, after that

:50:14.:50:15.

slight mishap. What on earth is happening? Suddenly

:50:16.:50:28.

the magic is disappearing. That could be in the water. There it is.

:50:29.:50:34.

The tell-tale ripples. All of a sudden, we were going along chatting

:50:35.:50:39.

away to the caddy and having a lovely time, and now... Yuck. Rory

:50:40.:50:50.

McIlroy, 13th, second shot. The drive, big drive. What a gem.

:50:51.:51:02.

Absolute gem. Found his tee shot into the water, then he had to drop.

:51:03.:51:12.

A rather ugly six. He drops back to 1-under. Rory, there will be a raw

:51:13.:51:21.

if this goes in, for an eagle. He's done it! An eagle three Faure

:51:22.:51:24.

McIlroy. -- a roar. Rory McIlroy vaulting up the

:51:25.:51:38.

leaderboard here at Augusta National. How exciting this is

:51:39.:51:43.

proving to be in the opening round, with Jordan Spieth there and Jason

:51:44.:51:48.

Day. He's had his problems the last couple of holes, Jason Day. Rory

:51:49.:51:51.

McIlroy making a decisive move, now within three.

:51:52.:51:58.

COMMENTATOR: Sergio now on a bit of a hot streak, birdies in the last

:51:59.:52:00.

three holes each. And another great chance for Sergio.

:52:01.:52:13.

That is a tricky putt. That putt is so fast.

:52:14.:52:22.

Ian Poulter, after that very nice delicate chip from behind the green,

:52:23.:52:30.

this for a par-4. Firmly done, well done. Good round. 69, well played.

:52:31.:52:37.

They've had enough and so has he. Danny Willett, at the 16th. Playing

:52:38.:52:51.

with Garcia, who has played a beauty, and he followed him in. Two

:52:52.:52:59.

cracking shots. Up to the 18th. Jason Day tabbing in for a round of

:53:00.:53:06.

72. 31 out there and then all those messy mistakes on the inward nine,

:53:07.:53:18.

441. 31, 40 one. How things can change, can't they? Over to Sergio

:53:19.:53:23.

with this treacherous putt down the hill. Just got to breathe on it.

:53:24.:53:31.

Some touch there. Four birdies in a Rover -- in a row, for Sergio.

:53:32.:53:44.

Struck it nicely. He has kept things going very nicely today. That is a

:53:45.:53:56.

fine two. Rory McIlroy for birdie, here at the 15th. For a two putt

:53:57.:54:06.

birdie. Beautifully holed, Rory. He is making some noise now! Lowry,

:54:07.:54:17.

with this very delicate 8-foot putt for a birdie. Oh! It slides by

:54:18.:54:26.

envelope side. But never mind, it's a four. Many have taken five today.

:54:27.:54:31.

Disappointing when you play such a cracking second, but four under.

:54:32.:54:36.

Here is Danny Willett, going to drop his first shot of the day if he

:54:37.:54:43.

knocks this in. Couldn't quite get up and down from the back of the

:54:44.:54:48.

green. It's been very tidy so far. In she goes. The first birdie comes

:54:49.:54:56.

at the final hole, but still very impressive for Danny Willett. Just

:54:57.:55:00.

that blemish at the last. Still a good round, round in 70. McIlroy,

:55:01.:55:10.

then, for his par at the 16th. No, that's a waste.

:55:11.:55:16.

What a fine effort this has been from Shane Lowry. Can he finish with

:55:17.:55:25.

a birdie? Oh! He thought he had it, I think they all thought they had

:55:26.:55:30.

it. Very good, though. Very impressive. No birdie at the final

:55:31.:55:36.

hole, but only his second Masters, remember. He missed the cut last

:55:37.:55:41.

year. That is an opening 68 foot Shane Lowry. As close as anyone to

:55:42.:55:46.

Jordan Spieth, alongside Danny Lee in a tie for second place. I didn't

:55:47.:55:50.

really get as many shots even though I drove the ball ready well and gave

:55:51.:55:54.

myself a few chances. When I got myself out of position on the greens

:55:55.:55:59.

I had a nice couple of two putts. All in all it was a great start to

:56:00.:56:03.

the weekend and I'm looking forward to the next three days. Rory

:56:04.:56:09.

McIlroy's second at the 18th found sand and a plugged lie, so he

:56:10.:56:13.

splashed it out, 25 feet past, and from there he would make bogey.

:56:14.:56:17.

Disappointing, you can see how he feels about it. Rory still in the

:56:18.:56:22.

hunt after an opening round of 70. This was his reaction. I was 4-under

:56:23.:56:27.

with three to play, so it would have been nice to get it in at under 70

:56:28.:56:31.

at least. It's a tough course, you're going to make some bogeys

:56:32.:56:37.

around here. I just need to go out there and be aggressive tomorrow and

:56:38.:56:41.

get those shots back as quickly as possible. But I'm happy with the

:56:42.:56:46.

day's work overall. It really lifts the spirits from a UK perspective,

:56:47.:56:56.

six home players and an Irishman all in the top ten. The last defending

:56:57.:57:02.

champion to own an outright lead was Jack Nicklaus in the defence of his

:57:03.:57:07.

title, in 1966. Jordan Spieth is in illustrious company. No doubt about

:57:08.:57:11.

it, his record at Augusta is fantastic. His 66 in blustery

:57:12.:57:16.

conditions was beautifully crafted. This was his putt outnumbered ten, a

:57:17.:57:21.

little one down the hill there. This was his key. This was number 11. A

:57:22.:57:27.

little bit off to the right. Lovely pace, dead centre of the cup. He

:57:28.:57:31.

missed the green at 12, chipped up and it was a tricky little putt.

:57:32.:57:35.

Time and time again, if he got into trouble, the putter gave him. These

:57:36.:57:42.

are so tricky. That was a touch and a half. 66, the standout round.

:57:43.:57:46.

Ironically he had been struggling with the putter coming in here,

:57:47.:57:50.

looks like he's resolved that. A lovely acrobatics this wonderful day

:57:51.:57:53.

for Shane Lowry and for Ireland, totally uninhibited all striking.

:57:54.:58:00.

This shot was wonderful. Never left the flag, with that long iron. Just

:58:01.:58:08.

made a par at 11, but his round of 68 today was very special. Some

:58:09.:58:14.

beautiful pages and lovely shots as well. There is an awful lot to come

:58:15.:58:19.

as we move very quickly towards Masters weekend. We've got round two

:58:20.:58:28.

highlights from 1:30pm tomorrow. Live and uninterrupted coverage of

:58:29.:58:30.

the whole weekend's play from Augusta.

:58:31.:58:34.

We are on an hour early on Sunday night, from 6:30pm with the deciding

:58:35.:58:44.

round. On the line, a green jacket to be claimed. It has been a taxing

:58:45.:58:48.

and testing opening round but the man who has passed Augusta's

:58:49.:58:57.

examination today with top A star grades, top of the class as he has

:58:58.:59:00.

been for some time, Jordan Spieth.
