It is time for the men's European gymnastic championships. Welcome to

:01:09.:01:17.

Montpellier. Let's deal with the ladies first, and two weeks ago and

:01:17.:01:21.

inexperience British team went to Brussels and Sean, with Hannah

:01:22.:01:31.
:01:32.:01:39.

Whelan stealing the show. -- and shone. On the men's side, getting

:01:39.:01:43.

things off to a flying start here in Montpellier with the junior

:01:43.:01:53.
:01:53.:01:54.

British team and they were from a double in their hunt for medals. --

:01:54.:02:04.
:02:04.:02:20.

Three junior gold medals, you came here and won everything you entered.

:02:20.:02:26.

I am extremely happy. The lads have done me proud. They helped me out

:02:26.:02:32.

in the team final so I am really happy. No nerves on the high bar at

:02:32.:02:36.

the end? You yes, I was nervous considering there have been some

:02:36.:02:45.

high scores but I just did my job. You won the rings gold medal, how

:02:45.:02:49.

did you do that? I don't know, I have been working hard for five

:02:50.:02:54.

years so I am really happy to do it. years so I am really happy to do it.

:02:54.:03:00.

The gold on pommel horse, no pressure on you then! No, none at

:03:00.:03:05.

all! I was the most nervous I have been, shaking, but I just did my

:03:05.:03:10.

best. Frank, three gold medals and a gold medal for the team as well.

:03:10.:03:16.

How proud are you of these people? I have got to know them like family,

:03:17.:03:23.

and to do this is excellent. Now it is time for the older men to make

:03:23.:03:27.

their mark on Europe. Dan Keatings is not in the British team but its

:03:27.:03:31.

five members are growing in confidence so can they get on to

:03:31.:03:41.
:03:41.:03:45.

the medal podium? Louis Smith introduces us to the senior team.

:03:45.:03:50.

There are five guys in my team, starting with me, Louis Smith, I am

:03:50.:03:55.

captain and my speciality is the pommel horse. I am a bit of a joker.

:03:55.:03:59.

If you look at the overall picture to where we were five years ago, we

:03:59.:04:05.

have done extremely well. We are in the team final, a qualified first,

:04:05.:04:13.

so it is going very well. What is going through your ears last thing

:04:13.:04:18.

before you get on to the pommel horse? For a bit of reggae. We have

:04:18.:04:26.

a playlist sorted, and I will be jamming away. Next we have Kristian

:04:26.:04:31.

Thomas who qualified for the floor and vault finals. He is the tallest

:04:31.:04:37.

man in the team, so watch out for him. I really have put in the hours,

:04:37.:04:43.

the blood, sweat and tears, so it is good it is starting to pay off.

:04:43.:04:47.

It has taken a few years to get here but we are happy at the

:04:47.:04:51.

position we are in. If you come to these tournaments expecting to do

:04:51.:04:59.

well, not thinking we might make that final, we might do this, it is

:04:59.:05:03.

good and it helps our attitude. Next we have our superhero, Dan

:05:03.:05:13.
:05:13.:05:15.

Purvis, who qualified for the floor final despite being ill. I really

:05:15.:05:20.

want to put in a good score, I felt quite a bit of pressure. Standing

:05:20.:05:26.

there thinking I have to perform this massive 2.5 Twist, I landed it

:05:26.:05:31.

and I thought don't do about it, just do it. I landed sideways and

:05:31.:05:36.

ran into one of the judges. As I was doing it, I thought I can't

:05:36.:05:42.

believe this is happening. I landed, one of the judges caught me and I

:05:42.:05:46.

couldn't believe it happened. we have Max Whitlock, he will be

:05:46.:05:56.
:05:56.:06:04.

joining me in the pommel horse finals. He is a gamer. This is

:06:04.:06:09.

really big and everyone is looking forward to the final. Finally we

:06:09.:06:19.
:06:19.:06:21.

have our powerhouse on the vault final, watch out for his big vaults.

:06:21.:06:25.

Training had twice a day, you wouldn't say it is easy, it is just

:06:25.:06:34.

for one day and you have to do it right so all the hard work can pay

:06:34.:06:38.

off. We have done one thing, then there is another stage where you

:06:39.:06:46.

have to do a little bit better and take it home at the right time.

:06:46.:06:52.

have a team final coming up with five guys in the team. Five Guys

:06:52.:06:56.

compete on each piece and only those scores count so if you make a

:06:56.:07:06.
:07:06.:07:24.

For the first of their six pieces This is the first gymnast for Bella

:07:25.:07:31.

Rhoose, one of three. The 20 five- year-old. They didn't have a great

:07:31.:07:41.
:07:41.:07:46.

A very nice easy start, half turned in the Arabian role, nice and clean.

:07:46.:07:52.

This is the secret here. Put your first man caught with a good,

:07:52.:07:59.

steady routine. He is not taking any chances. Dislocate into

:07:59.:08:06.

handstand from the manner position, very nice touch. A double twist and

:08:06.:08:11.

a hop forward. Sometimes when you see the clean routine like this,

:08:11.:08:21.
:08:21.:08:28.

not too difficult, it really is Cleanly held. He loves that

:08:28.:08:38.
:08:38.:08:45.

2.5 twist to finish, a good steady team start. There is a long way to

:08:46.:08:52.

go. Or obviously quite a tactical decision here to go with a

:08:52.:08:56.

decision here to go with a relatively straightforward routine.

:08:56.:09:06.
:09:06.:09:13.

Should be a steady first score for Their first gymnast fell so they

:09:13.:09:23.
:09:23.:09:28.

have only got to carry one fall. third gymnast, it is. He has

:09:28.:09:33.

faltered on the very first difficulty. When your first man

:09:33.:09:43.
:09:43.:09:59.

falls, there is a lot of pressure half-turn. He has done well,

:09:59.:10:06.

because he started very nervously with the very first half --

:10:06.:10:13.

handstand. This was a much better team performance from the Ukraine

:10:13.:10:18.

in qualification than we have seen for a couple of years. A young team

:10:18.:10:28.
:10:28.:10:40.

from the Ukraine, the eldest is 20 Great Britain. Max Whitlock was the

:10:40.:10:50.
:10:50.:10:50.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

:10:50.:11:37.

first gymnast from Great Britain up, that is a good sign that he is

:11:37.:11:47.
:11:47.:12:05.

What a super of routine. Kristian Thomas made that look easy. What a

:12:05.:12:15.
:12:15.:12:45.

roof but he didn't hit the floor very well at all. Let's have a look

:12:45.:12:53.

at this. The half-turn was very late. That is at least a point off.

:12:54.:13:01.

You can see he was released laying the legs to get in tight. That will

:13:01.:13:08.

be a big debate - were the feat in before the hands? He has been given

:13:08.:13:15.

as zero. We did wonder, didn't we? We thought it was very close. That

:13:15.:13:25.
:13:25.:13:42.

third of the Russian gymnasts four. The Russian team qualified in third

:13:42.:13:52.
:13:52.:14:11.

place on the reins, a fantastic Really showing the strength work,

:14:11.:14:18.

nothing rushed about the routine. Just a little bit of shaking as he

:14:18.:14:26.

holds it. But he controls the top of the Rings well. Into the double

:14:26.:14:33.

front dismount, well landed. He is thrilled with that routine.

:14:33.:14:43.
:14:43.:14:48.

strength and depth Unido on the the vault, which tends to score

:14:48.:14:58.
:14:58.:15:06.

higher. That is why they are up in only slight, but he flies through

:15:06.:15:13.

the air. If it is perfect, 17. That would be some score. He turns and a

:15:13.:15:17.

triple twist. He makes the turn, snaps three twists, straight down

:15:18.:15:23.

the middle. That is the thing. Some people might say that without the

:15:23.:15:25.

somersault it doesn't look as difficult. But look at the twists

:15:25.:15:35.
:15:35.:15:54.

Look at the size of him. Absolutely message needs to be that shoulders

:15:54.:15:58.

make a straight line. It looks a tiny bit up, but might be the

:15:58.:16:04.

camera angle... That is a straight line. So is that. He is in good

:16:04.:16:14.
:16:14.:16:44.

but that is too high on the with a straight back. Look at him,

:16:44.:16:51.

isn't he a powerful looking guy? You can see that his body is

:16:51.:16:56.

straight, his shoulders are down. Phenomenal strength. But I am very

:16:56.:17:03.

impressed with the dismount. Double-doubles, at one time it was

:17:03.:17:13.

unusual to see those. But now they are all performing like that.

:17:13.:17:23.
:17:23.:17:42.

Beijing. He's been a European vault deeper on the landing. But a hugely

:17:42.:17:47.

difficult vault. Enough to keep Russia in the lead? Enough to keep

:17:48.:17:53.

Russia in the lead. A double pike, the shape is all right. That is a

:17:53.:18:03.
:18:03.:18:19.

The second gymnast up. Dan Purvis young shoulders of Max Whitlock,

:18:19.:18:29.
:18:29.:18:34.

from the South Essex gymnastics He moves fast. He packs in the

:18:34.:18:44.
:18:44.:18:48.

difficulty. He asked to keep difficult. He is building his

:18:48.:18:52.

difficulty. An all-important dismount and he swings into the

:18:52.:18:59.

finish. What a fabulous routine. What a performance! Massive. He

:18:59.:19:03.

didn't do the best in qualifying but that was superb. That is a huge

:19:03.:19:12.

score. It's going to be 15.5 plus, I would think. Anton Golotsutskov,

:19:12.:19:19.

a massive score. 16.1. So, Louis Smith is the next on the pommel

:19:19.:19:27.

horse. He has a lovely, relaxed swing. But he is still extended. He

:19:27.:19:33.

has such fast reactions. He is very quick on his hands. Full extension.

:19:33.:19:43.
:19:43.:19:55.

Good, accurate placement of the the pommel horse. The big bronze

:19:55.:20:05.
:20:05.:20:15.

conquered it. The work he can do 11 hand, an extra turn will give him

:20:15.:20:25.
:20:25.:20:32.

the A & E. That is how you build all named after the gymnast or the

:20:32.:20:42.
:20:42.:20:49.

massive routine. He got 15.9 in qualifying. Come on, 16. Come on,

:20:49.:20:56.

judges. Give him 16. House mood was that? Unbelievable. -- House move

:20:56.:21:03.

with was that. He looked full of confidence. Sometimes you watch him

:21:03.:21:13.
:21:13.:21:47.

and get nervous. 15.833. The judges quite well. They are making these

:21:47.:21:53.

doubles looks so easy. They are, but he would not want to land too

:21:53.:21:59.

many times like that. The pressure that your ankles take on that kind

:21:59.:22:09.
:22:09.:22:21.

parallel bars. Can they stay in the bronze-medal position? A very good

:22:21.:22:28.

start. A little bit rushed, his first few elements. But that had a

:22:28.:22:34.

lovely height and flight. Great somersault. That was very nice

:22:34.:22:40.

indeed. Really travelled well. He is almost working the parallel bars

:22:40.:22:50.
:22:50.:22:53.

like the high bars, really. Lots of his showing control of the top of

:22:53.:23:00.

his handstand. Always a little bit arched. Super height, with a hop

:23:00.:23:07.

forward in the dismount. That was very interesting. A lot of doubles.

:23:07.:23:17.
:23:17.:23:38.

A spectacular extra struggle. That the Russian team. Really going well.

:23:38.:23:48.
:23:48.:24:03.

A lovely swing. Look at those legs, what I mean by holding a handstand

:24:03.:24:07.

and unsettling for your next elements. Absolutely rock-solid at

:24:07.:24:14.

the top of the swing. Another massive struggled front somersault.

:24:14.:24:19.

Every time he hits that position, he gives himself time in the air.

:24:19.:24:25.

That was classy work. That was a joy to watch. It had a lovely tempo.

:24:25.:24:32.

Really good. He's brilliant on reins as well. The same sort of

:24:32.:24:42.
:24:42.:24:55.

consummate style. It really was the Russians. Panteleymonov, three

:24:55.:24:59.

pieces of apparatus today for Great Britain. Great Britain are

:24:59.:25:09.
:25:09.:25:33.

not hold that position either. Come Britain. It is not their strongest

:25:33.:25:43.
:25:43.:25:56.

angle, but I thought he was a bit low. He needs to stick this, hop to

:25:56.:26:06.
:26:06.:26:29.

team at 29 years old. That was a and Romania third. Ukraine are 4th.

:26:29.:26:34.

Switzerland are 5th, with Germany moving up into 6th. A big scoring

:26:34.:26:44.
:26:44.:26:44.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

:26:44.:27:32.

succession. Tough worker. Good, got away with it. There is a lot of

:27:32.:27:39.

work in this, I will tell you. Double pike. Just a little skip

:27:39.:27:44.

backwards. But that was so businesslike. Plenty of swing,

:27:44.:27:51.

plenty of grit and determination. They have put up a very young team.

:27:51.:28:01.
:28:01.:28:01.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

:28:01.:28:47.

Small, slight and full of new work, A little bit wild with the legs.

:28:47.:28:52.

That was a little bit late. Just tiny errors that will stop the

:28:52.:28:57.

score going sky-high. But a good swing. He keeps the swing would in

:28:57.:29:07.
:29:07.:29:18.

all the time. In and out. In this work you do, you have to hit all of

:29:18.:29:28.
:29:28.:29:41.

your hands dance. The more work he know he is great at the vault, but

:29:41.:29:46.

a lot of people don't remember that in 2000 he was the all-round

:29:46.:29:56.
:29:56.:29:56.

champion. A useful man to have one your team. Miles adrift. The door

:29:56.:30:02.

is open for Great Britain. That was a country mile away. He just didn't

:30:02.:30:07.

make the action. He was so close on the first couple of releases that

:30:07.:30:17.
:30:17.:30:28.

Denmark adrift so he needs the difficulty. Great Britain still

:30:28.:30:34.

have it all to go through. He has recovered very well because he

:30:34.:30:39.

looked groggy after that fall. Almost missed his grasp on the

:30:39.:30:45.

twist, and what will he do for the dismount? Well done desquamation

:30:45.:30:55.
:30:55.:31:03.

marred full twist, double straight. -- Well done! He didn't really look

:31:03.:31:12.

settled on any of the first lot of releases. Kristian Thomas, he has

:31:12.:31:19.

qualified for the European vault final. Heaney to land this, no

:31:19.:31:26.

questions asked. And this is a massively risky vault. He got the

:31:26.:31:32.

feet down but he had the hands down as well. That almost looked too

:31:32.:31:38.

leisurely in the approach. It is very high, but that is a hallmark

:31:38.:31:43.

of without any question. What happened on high bar, he has now

:31:43.:31:49.

even doubt. It is a good competition - relax, don't look so

:31:49.:31:58.

worried! Can you believe this? Not as costly as we thought, perhaps.

:31:58.:32:08.
:32:08.:32:13.

No, but not the 16.9. He will have to go all out with his highest

:32:13.:32:21.

difficulty. He is very good. Did he qualified first? Yes, junior

:32:21.:32:31.
:32:31.:32:50.

champion on the high bar, scoring good, difficult work. This is how

:32:50.:32:54.

he is getting the difficulty, getting close to handstand on the

:32:55.:33:04.
:33:05.:33:23.

up, good style. Brilliantly done. Brilliantly done indeed. They are

:33:23.:33:29.

very delighted, but of course with all three scores counting, they

:33:29.:33:39.
:33:39.:33:43.

can't drop the 12th. He catches the full can't stretch. -- arm stretch.

:33:43.:33:49.

That was a great response, he got stuck in, rocketed off the top and

:33:49.:33:56.

made a half-turn. Back in with a shout. We can see the whole vault

:33:56.:34:01.

here. Look at the power down the runway, lifting off, under lovely

:34:02.:34:11.
:34:12.:34:25.

lead. Russia into second, 15.766. With two pieces of apparatus to go,

:34:25.:34:35.
:34:35.:35:01.

Great Britain leading by Neelie two done every single piece today.

:35:01.:35:11.
:35:11.:35:24.

are what you are after here. There is the fall would hit circle done

:35:24.:35:31.

successfully, not an easy move. And another one for good luck. A little

:35:31.:35:41.
:35:41.:35:44.

bit late. The combination makes it slightly more difficult. Double

:35:44.:35:53.

Double, and again, a falter on the dismount. He will not be happy at

:35:53.:36:00.

the moment. Romania have a little bit more experience, don't they?

:36:00.:36:06.

They have got some great work. He was very nippy with his work,

:36:06.:36:16.
:36:16.:36:31.

catches in the next grasp, up into Romanians on the floor. Star At

:36:31.:36:37.

with a full twisting front, absolutely amazing. He is so aware

:36:37.:36:43.

and able to twist. A lot of gymnasts lose where they are when

:36:43.:36:53.
:36:53.:37:06.

they do more to pull twisting, he in support very nicely as well. One

:37:06.:37:14.

of the more experienced members of the Romanian team. It goes so fast,

:37:14.:37:24.
:37:24.:37:25.

you can barely count them as you see them. That is why we say the

:37:25.:37:31.

judges need a good eye, they need to be able to see the twists. Not a

:37:31.:37:38.

flicker on landing, really good work. So more of this work - that

:37:38.:37:48.
:37:48.:37:51.

is how he starts, full twist into 2.5 twists, amazing. Flavius Koczi,

:37:51.:38:01.
:38:01.:38:03.

15.033. They go ahead of the Ukraine. The second Russian gymnast.

:38:03.:38:11.

Look at that. Double twist in pike back out, double twisting, double

:38:11.:38:21.
:38:21.:38:26.

back. Very smooth. He is a classy gymnast. Just as a sort of side

:38:26.:38:34.

pass there, a double Arabian with a half-turn. That was not very clean.

:38:34.:38:44.
:38:44.:39:01.

controlled. It was controlled. A big tumble, a super landing. They

:39:01.:39:10.

do these fall twisting from so well. He is absolutely delighted. They

:39:10.:39:20.
:39:20.:39:34.

know they are battling for every penultimate piece of apparatus, Dan

:39:34.:39:44.
:39:44.:39:55.

Purvis. A tiny adjustment. Nothing serious so far. Nice, good control.

:39:55.:40:05.
:40:05.:40:10.

The fall would spins have been done very well. -- forward spins. This

:40:10.:40:18.

is now really close. Russia have finished on the floor, and Dan

:40:18.:40:28.
:40:28.:40:32.

Purvis needs 13.615 to stay ahead of them. He has 14.633! The high

:40:32.:40:42.
:40:42.:40:42.

bar next. So Great Britain lead Russia. That was the real battle

:40:42.:40:52.
:40:52.:41:01.

the pommel horse here with Flavius Koczi. Starting that single legwork

:41:01.:41:10.

early on in the routine but he bounced his knee off then. Into the

:41:10.:41:16.

more comfortable double leg work. He has a good physique for pommel

:41:16.:41:24.

horse, a light frame, able to press down well and lift his body up high.

:41:25.:41:31.

It is full of difficulty. Another little deduction, and he is

:41:31.:41:37.

struggling to keep the form. Into the dismount, and well done. There

:41:37.:41:43.

were deductions through the routine and they are showing it in their

:41:43.:41:49.

faces. I always think it is better not look too dejected gone to will

:41:49.:41:53.

the judges have made up their minds. A did well to rescue that, he will

:41:53.:42:03.

just about get the credit for it. Putting Romania ahead of the

Ukraine. This is the last gymnast for the Ukraine. That tumble, just

:42:15.:42:25.
:42:25.:42:26.

a little scramble. Feet apart, tiny deductions. Massive work, this.

:42:26.:42:34.

Lots of difficulty. A little skip back. Of the gymnasts from the

:42:34.:42:41.

Ukraine have sped through their floor routines. He didn't quite

:42:41.:42:47.

hold that, did he? He fell out of it. That is an element they have to

:42:47.:42:57.
:42:57.:42:57.

show, they have to show control in the handstand phase. He rushes

:42:57.:43:03.

straight back in, 2.5, and he landed out of the floor. That will

:43:03.:43:09.

be costly. That could be what loses them a medal because that is costly,

:43:09.:43:15.

actually landing out. He pulls himself together for a nice triple

:43:15.:43:24.

to finish but that was a nervy performance. They need 15.06, they

:43:24.:43:34.

don't have enough. What a shame. It looks like Romania have got bronze.

:43:44.:43:55.

The first gymnast for Great Britain It is not over yet. He didn't

really get hold of it. You just can't hang on when that happens.

:44:02.:44:11.

Great Britain have been in the lead for two pieces of apparatus. Put it

:44:46.:44:53.

Damage-limitation is what it is that. It will obviously be a costly

fall. But it is not over yet. Russia on the pommel horse, who

:44:58.:45:03.

knows? This is a whole new pressure. Working to win a European gold

:45:03.:45:06.

medal is something you cannot practise. He just succumbed to the

:45:06.:45:16.

pressure. Max Whitlock, 12.533. It looks low, but there is some

little hesitation on the dismount. He kept his composure, he knows

:46:21.:46:27.

what he needs to do. Nail-biting. He needed that routine. The

:46:27.:46:37.
:46:37.:46:47.

pressure was on him. His work is just give him the boost that he

needs to chase. He has a solid bit of arm bend. Slightly askew.

big deduction. He really had to use strength. He will not get the value

for that dismount. That could be think they know what is going on at

the moment. It will be close. spindle is fabulous. He really kept

it going. But if he used to much strength on the dismount, they will

take it away from you. I think he will be very lucky to get anything

:49:33.:49:43.
:49:43.:49:55.

more than 14. If they give him to score. They obviously gave him to

history. Thank you very much. That was a really good routine. What a

:51:08.:51:15.

way to finish this team competition. They know it is enough. What a

:51:15.:51:20.

fantastic, fighting performance. He could have given up in the middle,

:51:20.:51:25.

easily. That absolutely epitomises Kristian Thomas. The most steady,

:51:25.:51:32.

hard-working member of the team. What a performance from the whole

:51:32.:51:39.

team. Absolutely. I have to say, I think we are still sitting on our

seats for the score. But he could not have done more. Well done.

An amazing experience. The team got right behind me. I knew that I

:54:47.:54:51.

needed a performance to win gold, but I didn't know what score I

:54:51.:54:55.

needed. I knew I was capable of doing a clean routine, it was just

:54:55.:55:01.

dealing with the pressure. It was pretty daunting. How were you

:55:01.:55:07.

feeling, watching him go up knowing that you already have fallen?

:55:07.:55:12.

probably put a bit more pressure on him. He went through an amazing

:55:12.:55:17.

routine. A bit more pressure? Probably a lot. But he dealt with

:55:17.:55:21.

it really well. European team champions, could it have come at a

:55:21.:55:26.

better time? It's fantastic. We are using this as preparation for the

:55:26.:55:32.

Olympic Games. We are rewriting the record books with that result. We

:55:32.:55:36.

can do nothing but positive mental things for these guys in terms of

:55:36.:55:42.

getting ready for the Olympics. compete every time, how important

:55:42.:55:45.

his consistency above everything else? Did that come through today?

:55:45.:55:50.

It is the most important thing. Unfortunately we had a mess at on

:55:50.:55:55.

the floor at the beginning. Then it just came clean air from there.

:55:55.:55:59.

Watching that final performance, what was going through your head?

:55:59.:56:06.

was nervous, big time. I was running around. I was screaming. It

was such a big relief when he stick Over the last five or six years,

you keep saying as far as gymnastics is concerned, I have

been waiting years for this to happen. Here we are, today, we have

:56:24.:56:29.

witnessed another historic moment? I'm just as -- bad I'm still alive

:56:29.:56:34.

to see it. It's just amazing. was right to the last piece of

:56:34.:56:37.

apparatus. Everybody is going to be asking what it means for the

:56:37.:56:42.

Olympics. Well, it means we have a real chance of a bronze medal.

:56:42.:56:46.

There is China and Japan, they are pretty much unassailable. But then

:56:46.:56:49.

there is a bunch fighting for bronze. They will be looking at

:56:49.:56:55.

what Britain have done. A junior and senior victories, winning the

:56:55.:56:58.

qualification. When you're trying to work out a build up, what better

:56:58.:57:01.

way can you do? They made a few mistakes, which gives them enough

:57:01.:57:07.

focus to get ready. You think that is a good thing? A brilliant thing.

:57:07.:57:11.

Make a couple of mistakes, get a mental focus. In two months they

:57:11.:57:14.

will be stronger than ever. This is the top eight from the Olympics in

:57:14.:57:21.

Beijing. We have China, Japan, the USA, Germany, South Korea, Russia,

:57:21.:57:30.

Romania, France. Where can we slot in? Do you know, the USA are the

:57:30.:57:38.

The USA did not have good technique but they have a huge mental

:57:38.:57:46.

strength in competition. If you compare the technique, there is no

:57:46.:57:51.

comparison. We are cleaner, we have better technique. It is just a

:57:51.:57:56.

matter of mental strength. Didn't they proved it today? That they

:57:56.:58:00.

have the mental strength. The last man app. That is the team. Now it

:58:00.:58:04.

is the turn of the individual apparatus finals. We have six medal

:58:04.:58:11.

chances. We are going to start with floor, going for Great Britain is

Dan Purvis and Kristian Thomas. ambition is to go out and do a

solid performance. We are not going to put expectations on ourselves

:58:20.:58:25.

because we have done the main job. We have lain down a marker before

:58:25.:58:29.

the Olympics, which is what we wanted to do. We were expecting two

:58:29.:58:33.

British gymnasts in the final. We have just heard that Dan Purvis has

That was a really nice for a team. Such a shame about stepping out of

the area at the beginning. I have to say, a big step at the end. I

if he has got that again, he would start with 16.6, but the deductions

trustingly, Gael Da silver's score important to get several

where he just had windmill arms, but very strong floor work. Star

also come, Great Britain's Kristian Thomas, but first, back in January,

:07:37.:07:43.

Ireland qualified gymnast for only the second time in Olympic history.

:07:53.:07:56.

Kieran has had to work harder than most to compete at this high level.

:07:56.:08:06.
:08:06.:08:06.

I had it you were in my left eye. A tumour. Luckily it was not

:08:06.:08:11.

cancerous but the operation went wrong and I was left wheelchair-

:08:11.:08:16.

bound for a long time. I was told I would not walk again, let alone do

:08:16.:08:22.

gymnastics. I recovered from that, decided to get back to what I love,

:08:22.:08:27.

then I suffered a major head injury on the high bar. I was doing basic

:08:28.:08:32.

elements but I had a bang on the back of my head and suffered brain

:08:32.:08:41.

damage. It is quite a traumatic incident, and especially for my

:08:41.:08:46.

family and people around me. That injury put me out of gymnastics for

:08:46.:08:50.

just over three years and again I was told I would never walk again,

:08:50.:08:55.

let alone do gymnastics, but I got back into gymnastics and started

:08:55.:09:00.

doing well. Then I ruptured my right cruciate ligament and then

:09:00.:09:06.

came from that one. Then everything was back on track, and 2010 was

:09:06.:09:12.

going to be my first debut for Ireland in the championships, and

:09:12.:09:22.
:09:22.:09:24.

then I ruptured my left cruise-ship the -- cruciate ligament. I won

:09:24.:09:29.

three World Cup medals and was crowned the floor champion, and

:09:30.:09:34.

then January came along and I qualified at the test event. Then

:09:34.:09:40.

to make my first ever European floor final is just remarkable.

:09:40.:09:46.

Dreams come true, I suppose, as long as you persevere. The story

:09:46.:09:50.

has really touched people in that it doesn't matter what you go

:09:50.:09:55.

through, you can always achieve. Whether it is winning Olympic

:09:55.:10:00.

medals or just going to the Olympic Games, it is the best accolade any

:10:00.:10:03.

sportsman can try to achieve and for me to have done that is

:10:04.:10:10.

incredible. I can't wait to go out there and do them proud and it was

:10:10.:10:20.
:10:20.:10:23.

definitely a triumph over adversity, floor final. He has qualified with

:10:23.:10:30.

the third highest score. He impressed and awful lot of coaches

:10:30.:10:35.

with the way he presents the exercise. He has got a nice

around the floor area. The quicker you were, -- work, the more you can

sure of it when he got right up out of the floor into the triple twist.

:12:03.:12:13.
:12:13.:12:15.

Quite a deep landing and the judges will deduct, but nice work. Kieran

:12:15.:12:19.

gets 14.433, in sixth place. Wrapping up this floor final for

Great Britain, Kristian Thomas for Great Britain. Can he get himself a

:12:38.:12:38.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

medal? He needs to be just as three-quarters. When you're told

:13:24.:13:31.

gymnast, if you can hold the body straight like that, it looks super.

:13:31.:13:38.

Deep concentration, just a step to the side. Only tiny errors, a

:13:38.:13:46.

really strong performance. 15.167 for a medal. He really does look

:13:46.:13:54.

good. No doubt about it. Double twist, and the one and three, nice

:14:04.:14:12.

kick out, head well forward, lovely so moves rolling. -- smooth rolling.

:14:12.:14:20.

He has done a good job. Just outside the medals. Disappointment

:14:20.:14:28.

for Kristian Thomas. It looks like the French team have appealed, and

:14:28.:14:34.

Gael Da silver has been reinstated with his original score, which

:14:34.:14:41.

gives him a share of the bronze. Kristian Thomas finishes in fifth

:14:41.:14:47.

place. Fifth place, and just go outside the medals. Is it as

:14:47.:14:52.

frustrating as we think? definitely, but it was not my

:14:52.:14:57.

cleanest of routines. My legs are feeling the burnt out there and it

:14:57.:15:00.

was hard work getting through so I have got to be impressed with

:15:00.:15:05.

getting through the Rete and cleanly. Time for the European

:15:05.:15:09.

pommel horse battle, and for Louis Smith, his biggest obstacle here

:15:09.:15:17.

has always been his Hungarian opponent. Throughout his career,

:15:17.:15:23.

the Hungarian has stud in his wake of the medal. In qualification they

:15:23.:15:33.
:15:33.:15:34.

15.9 is a massive score, but when finals come around it is a brand

:15:34.:15:38.

new day. You've got to do another routine and impress the judges

:15:38.:15:47.

again. He's a good gymnast. For me, he has done better. But I have a

:15:47.:15:51.

respect for him. Potentially, I know I have enough talent in the

:15:52.:15:55.

bank. I have worked hard enough over the years to believe that I

:15:55.:16:05.
:16:05.:16:05.

can beat him. He is younger than me. But he's very good. He's a

:16:05.:16:09.

fantastic competitor, he is a calm, collected guy. He rarely makes a

:16:09.:16:19.
:16:19.:16:34.

mistake. Fair play to him, but I in this pommel horse final feeling?

:16:34.:16:43.

We caught up with 19-year-old Max In the final with Louis, what are

:16:43.:16:48.

the odds of creeping about him? would be amazing. He is amazing on

:16:48.:16:53.

him in qualification. -- tied with champion. But seniors is a very

:17:08.:17:18.
:17:18.:17:47.

one break so far. Travelling forward and backwards. Very quick.

:17:47.:17:55.

Keep it smooth. Get the rhythm. Well, that is the lead. What a

:17:55.:17:58.

recovery on that the dismount. That was tremendous. That's the hardest

:17:58.:18:02.

routine we have seen so far in this final. Such a quick thinking

:18:02.:18:12.
:18:12.:18:12.

gymnast. The difficulty in this was huge. He worked the apparatus so

:18:13.:18:19.

fast and kept such control of it. Just the like separation. But it

:18:19.:18:27.

was almost as if it didn't happen. -- leg separation. That is where he

:18:27.:18:33.

hit the handle. Many a gymnast would have fallen. He really has

:18:33.:18:43.
:18:43.:19:09.

triple Russian in the middle. That is so difficult to swing clear of

:19:09.:19:17.

the hand. A lovely bit of technique. Shoulders pressed back, keeping it

:19:17.:19:27.
:19:27.:19:30.

his way through to the dismount and he keeps the rhythm. That was

:19:30.:19:40.

impressive. He is definitely back for medal here, in 2012. Single

:19:40.:19:47.

legwork, as you said. Many gymnasts are opting to do that right at the

:19:47.:19:50.

beginning of the routine. He didn't lose for more rhythm into the

:19:50.:19:55.

dismount. That is proven, for many gymnasts, to be a bit of a

:19:55.:20:05.
:20:05.:20:19.

done so much for the interest in men's gymnastics in Great Britain.

:20:19.:20:24.

So many medals at international level. It would be great to see him

:20:24.:20:34.
:20:34.:20:45.

into the rhythm. It's about precision and about keeping back

:20:45.:20:55.
:20:55.:20:59.

through the spindle. He has picked up the rhythm of the circle. Triple

Russian. I'll tell you what, he's Louis Smith. He's gone through

:21:19.:21:29.
:21:29.:21:39.

again. He's through. Now it's in at the beginning. He has the most

:21:39.:21:44.

difficult routine. What he loses on generally is the execution score.

:21:44.:21:49.

When you split your legs or do not. Your toes, the judges take points

:21:50.:21:55.

off. -- do not point your toes. He needs to get into nine pluses on

:21:55.:22:00.

execution. He really worked hard at it. This was much cleaner, for my

:22:00.:22:06.

money. What do you reckon? The only fault that I have seen was a tiny

:22:06.:22:10.

bend in the arm on the way to the handstand. The rest of it, look at

:22:10.:22:18.

that smile, he could be delighted with that. I wonder? 15.9 in

:22:18.:22:25.

qualifying. 15.775. Definitely the winning score at the moment. But

:22:25.:22:35.
:22:35.:22:57.

current world and European champion, medal contention. -- within a gold

:22:57.:23:05.

medal contention. That leg separation, look at this.

:23:05.:23:15.
:23:15.:23:28.

Playing safe, none of that. He's seen the difficulty that Louis

:23:28.:23:38.
:23:38.:23:44.

Smith posted and he's got to go for wins, he deserves it. That was a

:23:44.:23:50.

real routine, under pressure. Having seen Louis Smith produce

:23:50.:23:55.

that great routine, that was the Michelle they really could -- great

:23:55.:24:05.
:24:05.:24:15.

exciting. It's a crowd-pleaser. It does look very exciting. This young

:24:15.:24:20.

man will know he has a battle on. He has to stay in tip-top condition,

:24:20.:24:30.
:24:30.:25:02.

with a score of 15.958. Louis Smith, in the way of European gold for

:25:02.:25:05.

Louis Smith. Now he knows exactly what he needs to work on and he has

:25:05.:25:15.
:25:15.:25:15.

That European title is proving a tough nut to crack? It is. I did my

:25:15.:25:20.

routine. You accept what has happened. You know, I worked hard

:25:20.:25:27.

for it. It's all right. UK and off, on Twitter afterwards he said that

:25:27.:25:31.

his score looked wrong and you should have four. What happened?

:25:31.:25:37.

Some of the judges said that it was a spindle element that should have

:25:37.:25:42.

been done in one circle. He did three-quarters of it in two. It's

:25:42.:25:50.

about whether it should have been a 67, rather than a 69. Then I would

:25:50.:25:54.

have been in front. Your first European final, how did you find

:25:54.:25:59.

it? I'm happy with what I've done, I upped the qualification routine.

:25:59.:26:04.

It was a lot harder and quite tiring. But I'm really happy with

:26:04.:26:14.
:26:14.:26:14.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

clear difference. And there it is. adjustment. This will be very close.

:27:45.:27:53.

Pace on the dismount. Sujit at the body strength. -- huge upper body

:27:53.:27:58.

routine. Just a tiny error in swing. Neither one predominant. A

:30:00.:30:06.

young gymnast, really showing good technique. The Russian gymnasts are

:30:06.:30:11.

always very good, technically. They never rush their work. They teach

:30:11.:30:21.
:30:21.:30:29.

every skill methodically. That was position at the moment with 15.666.

:30:30.:30:39.

One more gymnast to go. The youngest member of this final, 19.

:30:40.:30:49.
:30:50.:30:52.

He is also in the vault final next. Gosh, a gymnast for the future. At

:31:02.:31:20.

19, plenty strong enough now. That them a tiny bit higher. -- feet a

:31:20.:31:30.

little low. Lovely technique on the swinging elements, just soft in the

:31:30.:31:40.
:31:40.:31:41.

bark a tiny bit. Nothing disastrous. Nailed the landing. This is a tough

:31:41.:31:47.

competition to get into the top three but that was a good effort.

:31:47.:31:56.

Let's have a look at this. He stops in the exact position, very, very

:31:56.:32:05.

nice work. Very impressive. Double twist, double straight, a tiny

:32:05.:32:15.
:32:15.:32:22.

adjustment to the side. Denis Ablyazin takes a bronze, a score of

:32:22.:32:32.
:32:32.:32:33.

15.453. The Italian has been such a strong force in the world of rings

:32:33.:32:43.
:32:43.:32:55.

Flavius Koczi starts things off, the former silver medallist. This

:32:55.:33:01.

could be a medal for Kristian Thomas. Let's see how the British

:33:01.:33:11.
:33:11.:33:13.

What are you looking to do in the final? I need to stick both of them,

:33:13.:33:18.

or at least one of them. I just need the chance to make the top

:33:18.:33:22.

three. Do you think you are thriving in this environment, with

:33:22.:33:27.

the whole team lifting each other? It is definitely a good environment

:33:27.:33:33.

because seeing your team-mate doing well pushes you one, and you see

:33:33.:33:41.

each other as a learning curve to move on to bigger and better things.

:33:41.:33:45.

As you can imagine, it is a good training environment to be in,

:33:45.:33:51.

especially when we have a good championships so we use it to our

:33:51.:34:01.
:34:01.:34:03.

advantage, definitely. Gymnasts will get two vaults. A triple twist.

:34:04.:34:11.

Amazing awareness in the air. forming his favoured vault first.

:34:11.:34:14.

forming his favoured vault first. Makes a half-turn, then three twist

:34:14.:34:24.
:34:24.:34:44.

vaults. The difficulty of the last one was the seven. Absolutely

:34:44.:34:54.

superbly. Under control. Was it 2.5 twists? It was. A handspring on

:34:54.:35:04.
:35:04.:35:09.

with 2.5 twist off. Goes on straight, then wraps that -- the

twists off. He is so good at twisting. Panteleymonov, for Great

the gold medal for the team. push, and the heart to her nicely

:35:37.:35:43.

done, kicked out. He made two rotations then kicked it out

:35:43.:35:52.

through the hips. That was massive. Not only did it have height, it had

:35:52.:36:02.

tremendous length as well. Kicks and turns, a little hop, a tiny

:36:02.:36:07.

deviation from the straight line but he got so tight in the tuck

:36:07.:36:17.
:36:17.:36:37.

qualification. I guess it will be something involving 2.5 turns so he

:36:37.:36:44.

has got to know where he is on the last turn. A good effort, but quite

:36:44.:36:52.

a hop sideways. He has had a good final, good steady vaulting. Twice

:36:52.:37:02.

he has produced it. A turn on there, too 0.5 twists. He is almost at the

:37:02.:37:07.

end of the landing surface. Split legs, that will be a deduction from

:37:07.:37:17.
:37:17.:37:35.

next to go, qualified fourth. The British vault champion. I think you

:37:35.:37:41.

can see why... And he fell over writer at the end. A very difficult

:37:41.:37:49.

vault, heat over rotated. You are squeezing to get it round, and just

:37:49.:37:54.

pulled a little too hard. Slightly undercooked it yesterday, make sure

:37:54.:38:00.

today that he had plenty of height and time in the air. He looked like

:38:00.:38:08.

he was home and dry. He gets a wonderful plant and a lovely lift

:38:08.:38:14.

off the top but he landed with his hips behind his feet, and it is

:38:14.:38:24.
:38:24.:38:43.

here, 6.6 difficulty. Come spring double front. Dead centre down

:38:43.:38:52.

there. That is a good repertoire of vaulting. I think this bodes very

:38:53.:38:59.

well for an Olympic final. If in the next few weeks he can get the

:38:59.:39:06.

half turnout on that, and he certainly has the air time for the

:39:06.:39:16.
:39:16.:39:23.

extra half-turn, and that will give him two seven vaults. He is fifth,

:39:23.:39:29.

a great effort from Kristian Thomas. Denis Ablyazin, the current Russian

:39:29.:39:35.

vault champion. This is his third apparatus final. Been all over the

:39:35.:39:43.

arena. Just needs settle down. explode off the top of this

:39:43.:39:49.

platform, and he does. There is the double pike, and lovely straight

:39:49.:39:57.

legs. Height, length, that has it all. Beautiful in the air,

:39:57.:40:07.
:40:07.:40:12.

absolutely. Only down a tiny bit, but in the air he looked great.

:40:13.:40:18.

you thought that was hard, wait until you see his next vault, the

:40:18.:40:25.

7.2 difficulty. So, the most difficult vault we have seen in

:40:25.:40:32.

this championships. Fantastic. The round off, there have turned on,

:40:32.:40:40.

handspring up in the air, 2.5 twists. Really complicated vaulting.

:40:40.:40:46.

Left at the angle in the shoulders, he did well to get that up. He made

:40:46.:40:52.

sure he got it round. He did get it round, yes. It is not good enough

:40:52.:41:02.
:41:02.:41:05.

for gold. He can't understand it. The last gymnast in this vault

:41:05.:41:12.

final. He is a replacement but he did get gold at the London Olympic

:41:12.:41:18.

test event earlier this year, and he has too much grow very difficult

:41:18.:41:28.
:41:28.:41:35.

vaults. -- two difficult vaults. sees the floor lovely and early.

:41:35.:41:41.

Make sure of the double tuck, use the momentum, kick out and spot the

:41:41.:41:51.
:41:51.:41:52.

landing. Flavius Koczi has led from the start. If he can keep their

:41:52.:41:59.

consistency, he will take gold from the Romanian. Remember, it is an

:41:59.:42:08.

average of the two vaults. Why on explosive element. And he did very

:42:08.:42:15.

well to hold on to that. Whether those big steps will be too costly

:42:15.:42:20.

for a gold, but that was super vaulting. If he wants their bronze,

:42:20.:42:30.
:42:30.:42:45.

got himself a silver. That is in a class of its own, it deserved -

:42:45.:42:55.

just for the sheer height and technical ability, that deserved it.

:42:55.:43:02.

Look at this. Rocketing up,. His toes on the first, that had very

:43:02.:43:12.
:43:12.:43:13.

special flight. The reaction at the end - terrific. you really need to

:43:13.:43:19.

give credit to good technique, and special height and control. What do

:43:19.:43:28.

you think, Christine? They were both fabulous but you have to marry

:43:28.:43:35.

the difficulty with control. Flavius Koczi takes gold. An

:43:35.:43:45.

unbelievable performance from the Ukrainian in second place but it

:43:45.:43:51.

was not quite enough. By the time you got to that vault final, was it

:43:51.:43:56.

hard to find the energy? Yes, it is also quite mentally

:43:56.:44:00.

tough. You need to make sure you are in the right frame of mind to

:44:00.:44:06.

make sure you are safe because they are quite dangerous. I have only

:44:06.:44:10.

been doing it a few months so it was good preparation for the

:44:10.:44:18.

Olympics to be doing it today, and I get more of a field, so it is all

:44:18.:44:28.
:44:28.:44:48.

Just 18 years old, but he has the second hardest routine in this

:44:48.:44:58.
:44:58.:45:34.

always technically great. Very comfortable on a single handle.

:45:34.:45:39.

Super height from the parallel bars. That was an excellent routine.

:45:39.:45:43.

is the routine to beat. There was a slight flex in the elbows, but

:45:43.:45:49.

apart from that... Where do you take off marks? Very nice. He kicks

:45:49.:45:55.

out from that deep fold. Very quickly through the somersault.

:45:55.:46:01.

Good technique, straight shape, pike shape. On to one rail with a

:46:02.:46:08.

handstand. Very well done. A tough move. It is the lead, it is the

:46:08.:46:12.

question of who is going to challenge afterwards. But he is

:46:12.:46:22.
:46:22.:46:44.

times. He is in a class of his own. He faded a little bit, but look at

:46:44.:46:54.
:46:54.:47:15.

and straight adjusting the shape. This is great. He is swinging

:47:15.:47:20.

continuously. A little bit low and they hop forward, but that is

:47:20.:47:25.

lovely to watch. What a flowing routine. Interesting to see what he

:47:25.:47:35.
:47:35.:47:36.

gets for his difficulty. Oleg Verniaiev had 6.7 and his score is

:47:36.:47:43.

15.666. He really works with the apparatus. Nothing looks a struggle.

:47:43.:47:53.

He showed his class. Straight arms, all of the time. He generates power

:47:53.:48:03.
:48:03.:48:04.

from the apparatus. He lets the dismount, he allows it to lift him

:48:04.:48:14.
:48:14.:48:41.

up, just back landing. At least spectacular stuff. Half turn. Look

:48:41.:48:51.
:48:51.:49:29.

at that, a long Ms Quinn -- long shoulders, every time he catches.

:49:29.:49:36.

The legs are locked together. You can see, when he is in the hands

:49:36.:49:40.

than shape, he pushes up to get maximum height. Look at the locked

:49:40.:49:48.

position. I love this dismount. He brings it so close to the bar as

:49:48.:49:58.
:49:58.:49:58.

bars. Oleg Verniaiev takes the for Russia. 21 years old, the

:50:52.:50:57.

highest qualifiers. He is a former junior champion on a high bar and

he has the highest difficulty in this final. He has amazing

shoulders. Fully extended on a double-double. It couldn't have

:51:52.:51:58.

gone any better than that. That was a fantastic landing. Remarkably

:51:58.:52:06.

controlled throughout, from start to finish. Total accuracy. This is

:52:06.:52:11.

the new young Russian generation. I think they are going to wow those

:52:11.:52:18.

in the future. He is technically strong. Lovely turns. You can see

:52:18.:52:24.

the head fixed between the arms, all of the time when he is working.

:52:24.:52:28.

He's got a perfect kick with the feet and he converts it

:52:29.:52:38.

magnificently. Double twist, arms out. A stable landing. No problem

:52:38.:52:48.
:52:48.:52:53.

with that, he wasn't still twisting is going to be a tough score to

:52:53.:53:03.
:53:03.:53:03.

mixed grip as well. He is packing of the difficulty in. You can see

:53:43.:53:48.

how supple he is to be able to swing in that dislocated grip.

:53:48.:53:58.
:53:58.:54:09.

discount? A single twist, and he under. He shifts his grip to make

:54:09.:54:15.

the heart turn. His shoulders work right around, very well done indeed.

:54:15.:54:23.

Lovely technique. Classic work. only thing you would perhaps say is

:54:23.:54:32.

that it is very much on a theme, he has shown one skill, the Tkatchav

:54:32.:54:37.

skill, and he has used it four times in different guises. That's

:54:37.:54:41.

true, but at the same time they will not punish him for that.

:54:41.:54:51.
:54:51.:55:03.

the highest score. He's been European champion on high bar five

:55:03.:55:13.
:55:13.:55:27.

really is very sharp. That was a Gaylord, that was done in 1984, the

:55:27.:55:37.
:55:37.:55:37.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

:55:37.:56:21.

may salvage a medal. It's unlikely, unless he gets the pace. That is

:56:21.:56:24.

what really good high bar work is about. He does the full pirouette

:56:24.:56:29.

and then he is meant to go straight over. You just feel he didn't have

:56:29.:56:35.

enough swing. He will lose the combination. He still did the move,

:56:35.:56:45.
:56:45.:57:09.

What an incredible few days for British gymnastics. It's fair to

:57:09.:57:12.

say that you have had a lot of confidence, but you took your

:57:12.:57:17.

knocks here and there. What was the secret here? The whole team was

:57:17.:57:21.

completely focused. We have dealt with the fact there is going to be

:57:21.:57:25.

expectation. It is getting close to London. We didn't worry about

:57:25.:57:29.

trying to win gold medals, this or that, we just wanted to do the

:57:29.:57:33.

routines clean and go home. The guys really understood that this

:57:33.:57:39.

time. What is your plan with execution and difficulty as far has

:57:39.:57:46.

the pommel horse is concerned? said, do you really want to go for

:57:46.:57:49.

the difficult routine? He said, how about going for the easier one and

:57:49.:57:54.

seeing what happened? To be fair, it was a sensible decision. I felt

:57:54.:58:01.

a bit wobbly. It was a bit tough to get through the routine. T Wise,

:58:01.:58:06.

were you allowed to celebrate? You didn't get any French

:58:06.:58:13.

champagne? We had a champagne toast. I put some lemonade in my drink. We

:58:13.:58:18.

had to focus on the finals. It's been quite successful. We wish you

:58:18.:58:22.

all the best for the preparations. Just keep everything crossed. That

:58:22.:58:28.

is it from the gymnastics. This is what else is coming up on BBC Sport.

:58:28.:58:34.

On Wednesday, a special edition of Football Focus at the start of Euro

:58:34.:58:38.

2012. Dan Walker will be in Poland. Alan Shearer catches up with Wayne

Rooney. The Diamond League series travels to Oslo on Thursday.
