Dealing with success and failure | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
are an inevitable part of a sportsperson's life, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
and nobody knows more about those emotions | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
than rower Katherine Grainger. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Three Olympics, three silver medals, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
until last summer in London she finally realised her dream | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
and took gold with her partner Anna Watkins on Dorney Lake. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
She now faces one of the toughest decisions of her life. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
Does she head into retirement | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
or carry on for another three years to Rio? | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
Whether dealing with success or failure, or the decision to retire, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
Katherine has found out that the aftermath of the London 2012 Games | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
can pose some interesting challenges for those involved. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
What we are seeing right now is that dreams do come true! | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
The day of the Olympic final is...a day unlike anything else. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
This was the once-in-a-lifetime home Olympic final | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
that we'd never get the chance to get right again. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
All athletes in Team GB had different experiences. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
Some met their goals in fantastic, glorious fashion, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
some devastatingly fell short of what they wanted. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Everyone looked forward in different ways, | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
but when it all finally had to come to an end | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
there was a distinct feeling of, "Where do we go from here?" | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
I'm on my way to meet a good friend, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
one of the most naturally gifted athletes I know. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
A fellow rower who, until five years ago, | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
had never set foot in a boat. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
You need an awful lot of talent, focus and determination | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
to become an Olympic champion in that time frame - | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
attributes Helen Glover has in abundance. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
The reason I started rowing was to become an Olympic champion in 2012. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
So in 2008 you thought, "2012 Olympic champion"? Yeah. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
Not every day did I think that COULD happen. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Every day I wanted it to happen, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
but there must have been something in me which thought I could do it. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
I'm still, a year on, | 0:04:11 | 0:04:12
getting moments where someone will come up to me and say well done | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
or say what it meant to them watching it, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
and that will really hit home, | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
possibly even harder than crossing the line did. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
They're making history here at Eton Dorney! | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
They've punched the air. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
Great Britain are Olympic champions. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
Did you feel a come-down at any point? | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
I got into my flat and I walked in and put my bags down | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
and I thought, "What do I do?" | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
And that evening I had a meal, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
I started doing the washing-up, | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
and that was the first normal thing I had done in a couple of months. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:48
Cos we had lived together on training camp for so long, the whole team, | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
that, you know, I was looking round, there was no-one to chat to. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
You felt lonely? Yeah, a little bit lonely and... | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
Those first few days, are you thinking, "What do I do with my life now?" | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
Cos you've just achieved the thing you've been planning for four years. Yeah. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
You've ticked the box. And nobody plans the next day. Yeah. Exactly. Nobody thinks past the finish line. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
And I ticked the box of the one thing I wanted to achieve in my life | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
and then I went home, and I sat at home, and I thought... | 0:05:13 | 0:05:18
"What's next?" And I think that, for me, | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
is what made the decision to go to Rio quite quick. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
"What's next? Rio. OK, I can focus on that." | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
You don't think, "I've already done it. I'm just going to do it again, am I?" | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
No. I think the question of what is greater than winning at a home Olympics is a big question. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:36
Because, actually, on its own, nothing. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
But then again, I think being defending Olympic champion | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
defending a title, that's got to be exciting, and that's my new exciting thought, I think. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:50
One of the things that makes Helen Glover really stand out as an Olympian | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
is the fact that she admits from day one of getting in a boat, | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
her whole purpose was to become an Olympic champion. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
That's quite incredible and really quite unusual. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
She's still got the hunger, she's still got the drive, and she genuinely loves being in a boat. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
And that's why she'll probably be Olympic champion in Rio. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
I only wish I had the same clarity about my own future. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
Both Helen and I experienced an amazing high last summer, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
but I'm all too familiar with the painful emotion of leaving | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
an Olympic Games feeling bitterly disappointed. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
My journey now takes me | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
to meet an athlete who's endured that very same grieving process. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
Dai Greene suffered an injury-plagued winter leading up to London. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
The world champion fought hard to regain fitness | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
but finished just outside the medals. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
A year on, I want to know how he's coped with that disappointment. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
The moment crossing the line, what's the first reaction, the first emotion? | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
Yeah, when I crossed the line I was just dipping to the line | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
so I wasn't sure I was dipping for a place. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
And I could see them going up on the board, and thinking... | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
"Come on, just give me bronze." I knew it wasn't silver. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
COMMENTATOR: 'Sanchez takes the gold medal! | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
'Taylor, Coulson and then Greene...' | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
Obviously popped up I was fourth, and the disappointment, then, and just thinking, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:05
"Oh, that's it, it's over. I've finished fourth..." | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
That just sucks. There's no other way to say it, really. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
It's just a really hollow feeling of achieving nothing, really. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
You've done all that hard work and you have nothing for it at the end. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
Could you be proud with fourth? | 0:07:19 | 0:07:20
I wasn't for a good couple of months but then once I got back in training for the following season, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:26
I sat down with my coach and we came to the conclusion that | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
I can't believe we actually got fourth after what we did. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
The whole of Britain was going crazy for the Olympics. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Had you experienced this kind of cauldron of Olympic fever? | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
I obviously loved what the Olympics did for the country. I can say that easily now. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:44
But at the time, I didn't want to see all those medallists on TV every day. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
You don't want to be reminded of Super Saturday, | 0:07:48 | 0:07:53
which was my semifinal night, where I came fourth! | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
The best way to get over it for me was to get back into training | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00
and start putting the work in for the following season. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
Did you always know you would continue after London? Yeah, it was never in doubt. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
I was only 27 so I've got plenty of time to continue my career. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
It was never going to be the end. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
I suspect the disappointment of London won't ever leave Dai, | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
but what's so impressive is his determination to make amends for last summer. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
He's still got unfinished business. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
For other athletes, knowing what the future holds isn't so easy. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:26
Retirement can leave a big hole to fill. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
But then aiming for another Olympics requires complete dedication | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
and not much room for anything else in life. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
For me, I'm still in that awkward, indecisive phase. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
You're aware of a wider world out there. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
But the decision whether to say it's the end point for my rowing career finally is a big one. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:48
The thought of never doing that again and never being competitive in a boat is one I don't know if | 0:08:48 | 0:08:53
I'm ready to say no to yet. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
Others have said no and made the decision to finish their careers in London. | 0:08:55 | 0:09:00
Victoria Pendleton is one of them. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
She retired from a sport that has shaped her life from the age of nine. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
So far, I've been able to relate to everyone I've met, | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
and in some ways, Victoria will be no exception. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
But at the moment, she's in a very different place to me, | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
and that's why I was so keen to talk to her. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
I made the decision quite easily. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
Because it was already four years longer than I intended to continue, | 0:09:19 | 0:09:24
and then I thought, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:25
"Is there any chance I could do another four years?" | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
The answer is no. Straightaway! It really was clear, that sense of relief, in a way, | 0:09:27 | 0:09:32
and release once it was finally over? Yes. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
COMMENTATOR: Victoria Pendleton's career ends on a silver medal | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
that draws an end to what has been | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
a glittering, glittering career. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
I was so relieved that I'd finished | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
and I wouldn't have to go through any of that competition stuff ever again. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
If I continued, I would still have that pressure and expectation on my shoulders | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
and I'd still have to carry it through to the next Olympics. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
And it weighed heavy after a while! It really did weigh heavy. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
Was there any aspect of, "I've made the wrong decision"? | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
Of course, when you make a decision like that, and it's pretty full-on, | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
starting a life from scratch again, you've left the thing that gives you... | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
It's your livelihood, it gives you a purpose, it gives you kind of a sense of belonging, | 0:10:10 | 0:10:16
and then to let it go and start again from scratch, and think, | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
"Will I ever be good at anything else?" And is that scary? It is frightening. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:23
But I've really enjoyed just having a bit more time to spend | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
with the people I love and the people I've neglected for the last ten years! | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
You know, spending more time with my family and my friends | 0:10:29 | 0:10:33
and being free to do stuff with them like go on holiday. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
It's perfectly normal, I think, not to necessarily have a really clear direction. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:41
Just I'm less used to it than most, I guess. As you are! Oh, completely. I'm lost. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
Do you have an image of the next dream job | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
or how you'd want your life to be? Not really! | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
But the idea of being settled somewhere and have a home that's our home is really important to me. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
I would love to be settled somewhere in five years' time and feel... | 0:10:57 | 0:11:01
..kind of on a new path. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
I want to be on a new path. But I don't know what that path is yet. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
I think for me it's been really interesting to meet three totally different athletes, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
different sports, different experiences in London 2012. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Whether it's been good, whether it's been bad, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
they've all dealt with the experience, learned from it, and moved forward. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
There's a real sense of optimism that whatever comes next, whatever future goals in the same career, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:29
change of career, change of plan, change of life, that for all of us, there is life after London. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:35
So we're here at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
one of the centrepiece venues for the Commonwealth Games. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
Guess who I might be coming to meet. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
And here he is, Sir Chris Hoy! | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
Who better to take us round the venues?! Do I have to call you Sir? | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
You don't, but you have to curtsy! | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
OK, you've really changed! Thank you, thank you! | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
Great to see you in this, named after you. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
It's just such a wonderful tribute. But you won't be here? Yeah, well, I will be here. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:14
But you won't be competing? I'll be here cheering the Scottish team on. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
But, erm... Yeah, it's... I'm content in my career, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
I'm content that I managed to achieve everything | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
and way beyond what I hoped to, but I knew it was the right time. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
I knew I'd got the best out of myself and I wouldn't be at my best if I'd tried to compete here. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:30
I didn't want to turn up and be... It's really interesting. We've seen a piece by Katherine Grainger, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:35
who's still in the process, deciding what to do. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
I did hope to continue and it would've been the dream end to my career, | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
to be able to race here in Scotland for the last time, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
so it would've been fantastic, but maybe a bit greedy! | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
Just two years younger, maybe. Well, exactly! I know! That's... | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
When you look out, and you see... I know there's a multisport day going on here, | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
and you see all these kids trying out different sports and enjoying different sports, | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
that feels good, doesn't it? | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
Oh, it's brilliant. And it's not just been staged for us today either! | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
This is genuinely what it's like. It gets used all the time | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
and it's busy from first thing in the morning to last thing at night. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
It's truly a world-class facility. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
I don't think you could think of a bigger honour. It really is. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
It's fantastic to think that your name is being linked with this | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
amazing facility and it'll be part of the future of the sport for many years to come. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
So that's... To me, it's as important as winning medals, | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
as important as your own personal success - | 0:13:27 | 0:13:29
to see that you're actually having some kind of longer-lasting impact on the sport that you love. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:34
Well, Chris might be at the end of his career | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
but others are just at the beginning. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:40
Last year, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor was the youngest member | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
of Britain's swimming team at the 2012 Games, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
and at 16 years old, she was also part of a team that underperformed. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
Well, the selection process has toughened up and the British team are determined | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
to make amends. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:54
Helen Skelton found out all about that determination | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
when she spent a day with Siobhan-Marie O'Connor. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
It's 8am and I'm in Bath to meet Siobhan, | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
who has already been in the gym for a couple of hours, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
and she's not even halfway through her day. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
She's qualified for the World Championships in Barcelona, | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
so there's plenty of work to be done. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
I get here for 6.30 and then we'll have an hour circuits in the gym. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:23
And then straight from there, we'll get in the pool | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
and do a two-hour swim. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
British Championships, where she swam the time needed | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
to qualify for the upcoming World Championships. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
I knew it was going to be tough because Great Britain have | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
such a strong 200 medley selection for the girls, | 0:14:43 | 0:14:47
I knew there would be a lot going under the time, | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
so I just had to dig deep on that last length. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:53
I managed to secure the time, so I was really happy with that. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
It's an impressive achievement, since the whole squad faced | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
a tougher qualification process as a result of British swimming's failure to deliver at London 2012. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:05
Three medals is not where we should be and it's not good enough. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:09
We targeted six or seven, and to get three was very disappointing. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:14
22.4... | 0:15:14 | 0:15:15
We're going to take a much more selective, | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
smaller group to the World Championships. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
What it means is, if you qualify for Great Britain, | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
you're probably already good enough to be a semifinalist or finalist. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
It means the swimmer has got to be hard enough to cope with | 0:15:27 | 0:15:30
that pressure at the trials, which means when they go to | 0:15:30 | 0:15:32
the Worlds or the Olympics, they can cope with that pressure. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:36
With Siobhan, you know, she went to the Worlds and the Olympics, | 0:15:36 | 0:15:40
she has experienced it now, and for her, the next thing is to make the finals and the podium, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:45
because I firmly believe she is capable of a podium position. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
Competing at a home games is arguably one of the most valuable experiences | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
a young athlete can have, but in Siobhan's case, | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
the challenges she faced in qualifying for London are perhaps just as important. | 0:15:56 | 0:16:02
Her dream was almost cut short | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
when she missed out in her preferred event at the first Olympic trials. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:08
Fortunately, there was a second chance. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
After a few months of intensive breaststroke training, | 0:16:10 | 0:16:17
It was a puncher's chance. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:20
I don't think many people thought it was going to happen, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
but this was going to be my last chance - | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
I just trained so hard, focused everything on breaststroke, and it all fell into place, really. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:31
That one minute of that race changed my life. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:34
COMMENTATOR: Spofforth hands over to Siobhan-Marie O'Connor. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:38
What a great opportunity for her. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
Having made the breaststroke, I had an opportunity for the relay, | 0:16:40 | 0:16:44
so I got to swim in an Olympic final. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
When I missed out at the first trials, | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48
if someone had told me I would be swimming in an Olympic final | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
a few months later, I would have said, "No way!" | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
But it all fell into place and it was incredible. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
Despite her age, she's got amazing experience already at the top events. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:03
17 years old, being an Olympian already, is amazing. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:07
She has come on a hell of a lot in the past couple of years. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:10
You know, I think she has really matured in her performances as well. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:14
Alongside competing at the top and improving her mental strength, | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
Siobhan has been working on her physical strength, too, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
and most days that means at least three hours in the gym. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:24
These sessions obviously help your physicality, | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
but it seems it helps team morale. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
You are all having a laugh in here as well as sweating! Definitely! | 0:17:29 | 0:17:33
In the pool, you have got your head down and you can't really speak to people, | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
but in here we can chat to each other and have a bit of banter. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
CHEERING AND LAUGHTER | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
Sorry! | 0:17:47 | 0:17:48
For you, then, how does it compare? Do you prefer being in the pool, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
or how do you feel about doing the weights? | 0:17:51 | 0:17:55
I know have a lot I can improve on in the gym, | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
because I'm like a fish out of water! | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
This is really important. With John and stuff, | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
I'm hoping to get a lot stronger and fitter. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
Siobhan deals with an intensive training regime - | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
she's taking an A-level and regularly goes abroad for training camps and competitions. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:15
At 17, that's a lot to handle, | 0:18:15 | 0:18:18
so living at home with her family gives her the support she needs. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:22
She's off tomorrow, so this is our Sunday dinner. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:26
Are you all going out to Barcelona? Yeah. Who gets the most stressed? | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
Definitely Mum, she can't watch it. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
If I hear that she is winning, I'll look up and I'll cheer her on. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:38
Otherwise I have my head in my hands or in my bag. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:42
I can't... My nerves! | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
Siobhan is very competitive when she races, when she trains. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:52
Especially in swimming. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:53
They train so hard, day in, day out, and she sacrifices so much - | 0:18:53 | 0:18:58
gives up sleepovers, parties, you know, sort of boyfriends. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:04
So you know how much they sacrifice, that's why... | 0:19:04 | 0:19:08
But it's the same for every parent, they want their child to do well | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
because they know how much they have sacrificed. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
For you, the Worlds is the thing on the horizon, that is what you are | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
training for, but how often do you think about the Commonwealth Games? | 0:19:18 | 0:19:22
How often do you think about Rio? People must ask about that, post-London. Definitely. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:27
The good thing about swimming, there is always something | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
at the end of the year, even when it is not the Olympics and Worlds. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
Glasgow is a good halfway point between the two Olympics, | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
to see where you are. You always think about it, | 0:19:36 | 0:19:40
because that is the next big thing which is coming up. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
If you've been inspired to get active, go to our website | 0:19:43 | 0:19:48
to find out more, or find us on Twitter. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
Thank you! After you. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:56
This part of the city has been undergoing regeneration | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
for some time, hasn't it? Yeah. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
This is a part of Glasgow that really suffered | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
with the closure of shipyards and industrial work. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
Yes, there's Celtic Park, Parkhead, just over there. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:20
The opening ceremony. Yeah. Any idea what it will consist of? | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
I've no idea! You're asking the wrong man! Favourite Scottish band? | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
It's going to have The Proclaimers in there somewhere, isn't it? | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
HE LAUGHS | 0:20:31 | 0:20:32
If it does, I didn't know! I'm not letting the cat out of the bag! | 0:20:32 | 0:20:37
It reminds me of Manchester before the Commonwealth Games in 2002, | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
the amount of work that was done to regenerate that part of the city. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
It's a similar area, and you see how Manchester was transformed, | 0:20:44 | 0:20:48
so I'm sure it will have a similar effect. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
The athletes' village is nearby, isn't it? Yeah, it's 85% finished. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:54
The houses and flats will be low-cost housing afterwards. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:58
That's right. | 0:20:58 | 0:20:59
One of the big factors for the success of London, | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
apart from you guys doing well and the venues being great - | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
the Games Makers made the Games so enjoyable - | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
seeing their joy at saying hello, | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
and the Games Makers are going to be a factor here. They will be. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:14
I believe the stats... | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
There were 15,000 Games Maker slots, 50,000 people applied. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
That's more than the Manchester and Melbourne Games combined | 0:21:19 | 0:21:23
in terms of applications. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:24
There is huge interest, and when people come to a city | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
that is the biggest thing - if you can get people welcomed, | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
make them feel they are part of it, and put on a great show, a party. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
We can put on a good party in Scotland, so I think it will be | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
the best Commonwealth Games we've ever seen. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
Cheers. Smart cab! Lovely! Thank you! | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
Another iconic Scottish venue. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
Normally, in the tunnel at Hampden Park, the national stadium, | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
it's the sound of football boots running out here. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
Next summer it will be the sound of athletics spikes. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
Yeah, it's going to be quite a transformation. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
So there'll be Mo Farah, Usain Bolt, Jess Ennis, David Rudisha, all running here. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:10
It's amazing to think how it's going to be transformed. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:14
It's an iconic football location but to see it with a track... | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
I'm not sure how they're going to do it! Luckily enough, | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
Suzanne is just the lady to tell us how this track is going to work. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
I've heard a metre higher. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:26
A lot more than a metre higher. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
More like two metres. More about Chris' height, in fact. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:31
You were saying it's an iconic football stadium | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
but where we are standing is where the 100m straight will be. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
We'll be building it up to about this height. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
Hampden is an oval ground so it lends itself | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
to the shape of athletics, but it is not quite big enough. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:45
It will go right up to that blue wall there. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
That will be the first row of seats? Pretty much. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
More to the point, it'll become a football stadium at the end of it, | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
so it's a temporary transformation. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
What will success look like from this Commonwealth Games in about a year and three weeks' time? | 0:23:00 | 0:23:05
I think seeing places packed to the rafters, | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
no spare seats, everybody getting involved, | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
everyone desperate to see some action, no matter what sport it is. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
Which is what, in the end, happened in London. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
If we can get the same thing here in Glasgow, | 0:23:16 | 0:23:18
to me, that would be a sign of success. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
Thank you so much for your time because I know you are so busy, | 0:23:20 | 0:23:24
a packed agenda. My pleasure, thank you. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
Go along to whatever you have to do next. I'll run off this way! | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
Run! This is where you run, now. See you. Cheers. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
While Sir Chris Hoy has been cycling pretty much his whole life, | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
Anthony Joshua only stepped in to a boxing ring at 18 years of age. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
Four years later, he was Super Heavyweight Olympic boxing | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
champion but the path to gold was far from smooth and his life | 0:23:47 | 0:23:51
could have taken a very different direction indeed, | 0:23:51 | 0:23:54
were it not for the loving support of his family and his own | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
dedication. This is Anthony Joshua's story. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
Hard to explain. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:08
When I was boxing, you don't get paid, so I was finding means to | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
support myself, but at the same time, I was trying to concentrate on | 0:24:11 | 0:24:15
becoming a full-time athlete. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:17
I needed an opportunity. But I am a proud man so I don't rely on anyone. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:21
It led into me carrying some cannabis and I was removed from | 0:24:21 | 0:24:28
the Olympic team and had my boxing licence removed. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:32
It was tough for the family but we pulled through and it's given him | 0:24:32 | 0:24:37
a wake-up call. He has learned from his experience. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
Luckily, they allowed me to continue to box, which was a blessing. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:45
I've thought, this is it, this is my last opportunity. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:47
He first walked in the gym in 2008, he came with his cousin Ben. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:59
All right, mate? I'm good, thank you. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
Good to see you. I'd told him I want to get fit, I want to get stronger. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:07
And he said, "Look, why don't you come for a real workout and see what | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
"I get up to down the boxing gym." | 0:25:10 | 0:25:11
That was how it started. I didn't really read too much into it. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:16
I didn't take it seriously. He did but I didn't. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:20
A day old... Look at your coconut head! | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
They say a coconut is hard to smash and maybe that's why I got into boxing! | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
THEY LAUGH | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30
I can remember when I got sparring, | 0:25:30 | 0:25:32
there was about seven heavyweights in the gym. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
The first two I was doing well until I come across a more experienced heavyweight. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:40
I had a Slovakian here, he was a top class heavyweight, and he used to | 0:25:40 | 0:25:45
box circles around Josh, frustrate him. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:52
throwing hooks, spinning around like Michael Jackson would! | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
I felt like I failed myself. Failure was kind of like a | 0:25:55 | 0:25:59
motivation. I always went back and | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
started seeing improvements and improvements. A year later, Josh | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
beat him up. After one round they had to stop, his face was a mess. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
And that is how, in a matter of a year, somebody who had been | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12
out-boxing Josh and doing what he wanted with him, couldn't handle him. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:16
That's when I realised I could get good at this. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:18
If I keep on working hard. Are you fit? Yeah. Lift up your top. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:23
What are you weighing now? LAUGHTER | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
What are you weighing now? 107. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:35
I could see the changes in him. He was very eager to go to the | 0:26:35 | 0:26:39
boxing club. And the next year, he | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
was entered into competitions and he won, and then he kept winning. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:47
I was thinking, "Oh, my gosh! Is that what boxing is doing to my son?" | 0:26:48 | 0:26:52
I won't swear, but he is a nasty | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
piece of work in the ring and that's the way you've got to be. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:59
At the end of the day, in the ring, you have got to | 0:26:59 | 0:27:03
hit them before they hit you. You can't be Mr Nice Guy, shaking hands. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:07
But Josh isn't. I went through the Novices, | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
Haringey Box Cup and so on. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:12
Then I became an ABA champion. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:14
I didn't know about Olympic boxing when I first laced up | 0:27:14 | 0:27:18
my gloves. So my goal was to become an ABA champion | 0:27:18 | 0:27:23
and then a professional boxer. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:26
And then I found out about the Olympic boxing when I | 0:27:26 | 0:27:30
started to become more of an elite boxer. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
Representing Great Britain, Silver medallist, Anthony Joshua! | 0:27:33 | 0:27:40
I could hear the roar, the cheer, the support they gave me. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
The most rousing reception... | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
It was something like a gladiator moment, | 0:27:47 | 0:27:50
you know when they are about to go out into the battlefield... | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
The opening bell sounds to determine the final gold medal. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:58
In boxing, it is either, you win or you lose, that's your Olympic dream gone. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:04
He's getting clipped by thunderous shots in the corner. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:07
Joshua is trying to fight back, but he has been rocked solidly. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
It is Camarelli who leads Joshua by three. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:17
Going into round three, I said to myself, whatever happens from here, | 0:28:17 | 0:28:21
I want to walk out with my head held high. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
And a spirited rally from Anthony Joshua! | 0:28:27 | 0:28:29
And rousing reception from the crowd greets that work. | 0:28:29 | 0:28:33
More left hand from Joshua. Come on, Josh, you can do this! | 0:28:33 | 0:28:38
I had the banner over my face. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:40
I can tell you, my heart was beating. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
I thought I was going to have a heart attack. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:46
Here's the official verdict... | 0:28:48 | 0:28:52
In the blue corner... | 0:28:52 | 0:28:54
So, I looked across, | 0:28:54 | 0:28:56
and I thought, I'm the one in the blue! | 0:28:56 | 0:28:59
Representing Great Britain - Anthony Joshua. | 0:28:59 | 0:29:03
It was like, gosh, gosh, he has won! I was so happy! | 0:29:03 | 0:29:07
I was so happy for him. | 0:29:07 | 0:29:08
Anthony Joshua is the Olympic Super Heavyweight Champion. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:11
A wonderful achievement! | 0:29:11 | 0:29:14
Everything I gained from the Olympics is a | 0:29:17 | 0:29:20
positive experience. There's not one negative thing. It's made me tough | 0:29:20 | 0:29:23
and stronger and given me a great opportunity. | 0:29:23 | 0:29:27
I am now a heavyweight boxer. No more super heavyweight. | 0:29:27 | 0:29:31
I've got rid of the head guard and the vest. As a professional boxer, | 0:29:31 | 0:29:37
my end goal is to become a world champion, an undisputed world champion. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:42
Some fighters in their whole lifetime, they never do what he has | 0:29:42 | 0:29:46
done. He's been to the Europeans, | 0:29:46 | 0:29:49
the Worlds and the Olympics in four years. | 0:29:49 | 0:29:52
He sleeps boxing, wakes up to boxing, he dreams boxing, | 0:29:52 | 0:29:56
he loves boxing, he lives for boxing. | 0:29:56 | 0:29:58
From court to sport, from negative to positive, | 0:29:58 | 0:30:02
I am happy and my family is happy, and the people who | 0:30:02 | 0:30:05
support me are going to see a great journey. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:12
Hearing Katherine Grainger debate her future was intriguing. | 0:30:16 | 0:30:19
Knowing when to face life's new challenges | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
is almost as tough as the road to glory for our heroes. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:25
Siobhan-Marie O'Connor has years to go before those decisions | 0:30:25 | 0:30:28
and Anthony Joshua is set on his path. | 0:30:28 | 0:30:30
Like Sir Chris Hoy, I'm sure they will take their | 0:30:30 | 0:30:33
never-give-up attitude into whatever they do. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:36
They are an inspiring bunch. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:38
And if they have inspired you, you can find out more on our website. | 0:30:39 | 0:30:44
And remember, keep looking for that flash of inspiration. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:50 |
