0:01:080:01:11

Welcome to Inspire: The Olympic Journey,

0:01:140:01:16

our brand-new monthly programme

0:01:160:01:18

where we'll be celebrating a host of sporting heroes.

0:01:180:01:21

We'll be meeting the stars of today

0:01:210:01:23

and finding out more about the stars of tomorrow

0:01:230:01:27

12 months ago, the nation came together, united by sport.

0:01:270:01:32

We watched in wonder and awe

0:01:320:01:34

at the achievements of a host of international stars.

0:01:340:01:37

David Rudisha, Usain Bolt,

0:01:370:01:39

Chad le Clos and Anna Meares.

0:01:390:01:41

In 12 months' time, those international superstars

0:01:410:01:44

will be back on home soil for the Commonwealth Games.

0:01:440:01:47

So, for our very first show,

0:01:470:01:49

we've come to the host city to take a look around,

0:01:490:01:51

and I've found us a pretty good guide.

0:01:510:01:54

Britain's most decorated Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy,

0:01:550:01:58

shows me the sporting sights of Glasgow.

0:01:580:02:01

Throughout the series, we'll introduce the stars of the future.

0:02:010:02:05

This month Helen Skelton spends the day

0:02:050:02:07

with the 17-year-old swimmer Siobhan-Marie O'Connor.

0:02:070:02:10

We hear Anthony Joshua's inspirational journey to success.

0:02:130:02:17

And if you want to get inspired,

Dealing with success and failure

0:02:270:02:29

are an inevitable part of a sportsperson's life,

0:02:290:02:32

and nobody knows more about those emotions

0:02:320:02:34

than rower Katherine Grainger.

0:02:340:02:36

Three Olympics, three silver medals,

0:02:360:02:38

until last summer in London she finally realised her dream

0:02:380:02:41

and took gold with her partner Anna Watkins on Dorney Lake.

0:02:410:02:45

She now faces one of the toughest decisions of her life.

0:02:450:02:49

Does she head into retirement

0:02:490:02:50

or carry on for another three years to Rio?

0:02:500:02:53

Whether dealing with success or failure, or the decision to retire,

0:02:530:02:57

Katherine has found out that the aftermath of the London 2012 Games

0:02:570:03:01

can pose some interesting challenges for those involved.

0:03:010:03:04

What we are seeing right now is that dreams do come true!

0:03:080:03:12

The day of the Olympic final is...a day unlike anything else.

0:03:120:03:16

This was the once-in-a-lifetime home Olympic final

0:03:160:03:18

that we'd never get the chance to get right again.

0:03:180:03:21

All athletes in Team GB had different experiences.

0:03:210:03:23

Some met their goals in fantastic, glorious fashion,

0:03:230:03:26

some devastatingly fell short of what they wanted.

0:03:260:03:29

Everyone looked forward in different ways,

0:03:290:03:31

but when it all finally had to come to an end

0:03:310:03:33

there was a distinct feeling of, "Where do we go from here?"

0:03:330:03:37

I'm on my way to meet a good friend,

0:03:390:03:41

one of the most naturally gifted athletes I know.

0:03:410:03:44

A fellow rower who, until five years ago,

0:03:440:03:46

had never set foot in a boat.

0:03:460:03:49

You need an awful lot of talent, focus and determination

0:03:490:03:52

to become an Olympic champion in that time frame -

0:03:520:03:55

attributes Helen Glover has in abundance.

0:03:550:03:58

The reason I started rowing was to become an Olympic champion in 2012.

0:03:580:04:02

So in 2008 you thought, "2012 Olympic champion"? Yeah.

0:04:020:04:05

Not every day did I think that COULD happen.

0:04:050:04:07

Every day I wanted it to happen,

0:04:070:04:08

but there must have been something in me which thought I could do it.

0:04:080:04:11

I'm still, a year on,

0:04:110:04:12

getting moments where someone will come up to me and say well done

0:04:120:04:16

or say what it meant to them watching it,

0:04:160:04:18

and that will really hit home,

0:04:180:04:20

possibly even harder than crossing the line did.

0:04:200:04:22

They're making history here at Eton Dorney!

0:04:220:04:26

They've punched the air.

0:04:260:04:28

Great Britain are Olympic champions.

0:04:280:04:30

Did you feel a come-down at any point?

0:04:310:04:33

I got into my flat and I walked in and put my bags down

0:04:330:04:36

and I thought, "What do I do?"

0:04:360:04:38

And that evening I had a meal,

0:04:380:04:41

I started doing the washing-up,

0:04:410:04:43

and that was the first normal thing I had done in a couple of months.

0:04:430:04:48

Cos we had lived together on training camp for so long, the whole team,

0:04:480:04:52

that, you know, I was looking round, there was no-one to chat to.

0:04:520:04:56

You felt lonely? Yeah, a little bit lonely and...

0:04:560:04:58

Those first few days, are you thinking, "What do I do with my life now?"

0:04:580:05:01

Cos you've just achieved the thing you've been planning for four years. Yeah.

0:05:010:05:05

You've ticked the box. And nobody plans the next day. Yeah. Exactly. Nobody thinks past the finish line.

0:05:050:05:10

And I ticked the box of the one thing I wanted to achieve in my life

0:05:100:05:13

and then I went home, and I sat at home, and I thought...

0:05:130:05:18

"What's next?" And I think that, for me,

0:05:180:05:21

is what made the decision to go to Rio quite quick.

0:05:210:05:24

"What's next? Rio. OK, I can focus on that."

0:05:240:05:26

You don't think, "I've already done it. I'm just going to do it again, am I?"

0:05:260:05:30

No. I think the question of what is greater than winning at a home Olympics is a big question.

0:05:300:05:36

Because, actually, on its own, nothing.

0:05:360:05:39

But then again, I think being defending Olympic champion

0:05:390:05:41

defending a title, that's got to be exciting, and that's my new exciting thought, I think.

0:05:410:05:50

One of the things that makes Helen Glover really stand out as an Olympian

0:05:500:05:53

is the fact that she admits from day one of getting in a boat,

0:05:530:05:56

her whole purpose was to become an Olympic champion.

0:05:560:05:59

That's quite incredible and really quite unusual.

0:05:590:06:01

She's still got the hunger, she's still got the drive, and she genuinely loves being in a boat.

0:06:010:06:05

And that's why she'll probably be Olympic champion in Rio.

0:06:050:06:08

I only wish I had the same clarity about my own future.

0:06:090:06:13

Both Helen and I experienced an amazing high last summer,

0:06:130:06:17

but I'm all too familiar with the painful emotion of leaving

0:06:170:06:20

an Olympic Games feeling bitterly disappointed.

0:06:200:06:23

My journey now takes me

0:06:240:06:26

to meet an athlete who's endured that very same grieving process.

0:06:260:06:29

Dai Greene suffered an injury-plagued winter leading up to London.

0:06:290:06:33

The world champion fought hard to regain fitness

0:06:330:06:36

but finished just outside the medals.

0:06:360:06:38

A year on, I want to know how he's coped with that disappointment.

0:06:380:06:42

The moment crossing the line, what's the first reaction, the first emotion?

0:06:420:06:46

Yeah, when I crossed the line I was just dipping to the line

0:06:460:06:48

so I wasn't sure I was dipping for a place.

0:06:480:06:50

And I could see them going up on the board, and thinking...

0:06:500:06:53

"Come on, just give me bronze." I knew it wasn't silver.

0:06:530:06:55

COMMENTATOR: 'Sanchez takes the gold medal!

0:06:550:06:58

'Taylor, Coulson and then Greene...'

0:06:580:07:00

Obviously popped up I was fourth, and the disappointment, then, and just thinking,

0:07:000:07:05

"Oh, that's it, it's over. I've finished fourth..."

0:07:050:07:08

That just sucks. There's no other way to say it, really.

0:07:080:07:12

It's just a really hollow feeling of achieving nothing, really.

0:07:120:07:16

You've done all that hard work and you have nothing for it at the end.

0:07:160:07:19

Could you be proud with fourth?

0:07:190:07:20

I wasn't for a good couple of months but then once I got back in training for the following season,

0:07:200:07:26

I sat down with my coach and we came to the conclusion that

0:07:260:07:30

I can't believe we actually got fourth after what we did.

0:07:300:07:33

The whole of Britain was going crazy for the Olympics.

0:07:330:07:35

Had you experienced this kind of cauldron of Olympic fever?

0:07:350:07:39

I obviously loved what the Olympics did for the country. I can say that easily now.

0:07:390:07:44

But at the time, I didn't want to see all those medallists on TV every day.

0:07:440:07:48

You don't want to be reminded of Super Saturday,

0:07:480:07:53

which was my semifinal night, where I came fourth!

0:07:530:07:56

The best way to get over it for me was to get back into training

0:07:560:08:00

and start putting the work in for the following season.

0:08:000:08:03

Did you always know you would continue after London? Yeah, it was never in doubt.

0:08:030:08:07

I was only 27 so I've got plenty of time to continue my career.

0:08:070:08:11

It was never going to be the end.

0:08:110:08:13

I suspect the disappointment of London won't ever leave Dai,

0:08:130:08:16

but what's so impressive is his determination to make amends for last summer.

0:08:160:08:20

He's still got unfinished business.

0:08:200:08:22

For other athletes, knowing what the future holds isn't so easy.

0:08:220:08:26

Retirement can leave a big hole to fill.

0:08:260:08:29

But then aiming for another Olympics requires complete dedication

0:08:290:08:32

and not much room for anything else in life.

0:08:320:08:35

For me, I'm still in that awkward, indecisive phase.

0:08:350:08:39

You're aware of a wider world out there.

0:08:390:08:42

But the decision whether to say it's the end point for my rowing career finally is a big one.

0:08:420:08:48

The thought of never doing that again and never being competitive in a boat is one I don't know if

0:08:480:08:53

I'm ready to say no to yet.

0:08:530:08:55

Others have said no and made the decision to finish their careers in London.

0:08:550:09:00

Victoria Pendleton is one of them.

0:09:000:09:02

She retired from a sport that has shaped her life from the age of nine.

0:09:020:09:05

So far, I've been able to relate to everyone I've met,

0:09:050:09:08

and in some ways, Victoria will be no exception.

0:09:080:09:11

But at the moment, she's in a very different place to me,

0:09:110:09:14

and that's why I was so keen to talk to her.

0:09:140:09:17

I made the decision quite easily.

0:09:170:09:19

Because it was already four years longer than I intended to continue,

0:09:190:09:24

and then I thought,

0:09:240:09:25

"Is there any chance I could do another four years?"

0:09:250:09:27

The answer is no. Straightaway! It really was clear, that sense of relief, in a way,

0:09:270:09:32

and release once it was finally over? Yes.

0:09:320:09:35

COMMENTATOR: Victoria Pendleton's career ends on a silver medal

0:09:350:09:38

that draws an end to what has been

0:09:380:09:41

a glittering, glittering career.

0:09:410:09:43

I was so relieved that I'd finished

0:09:450:09:47

and I wouldn't have to go through any of that competition stuff ever again.

0:09:470:09:51

If I continued, I would still have that pressure and expectation on my shoulders

0:09:510:09:55

and I'd still have to carry it through to the next Olympics.

0:09:550:09:57

And it weighed heavy after a while! It really did weigh heavy.

0:09:570:10:01

Was there any aspect of, "I've made the wrong decision"?

0:10:010:10:03

Of course, when you make a decision like that, and it's pretty full-on,

0:10:030:10:06

starting a life from scratch again, you've left the thing that gives you...

0:10:060:10:10

It's your livelihood, it gives you a purpose, it gives you kind of a sense of belonging,

0:10:100:10:16

and then to let it go and start again from scratch, and think,

0:10:160:10:18

"Will I ever be good at anything else?" And is that scary? It is frightening.

0:10:180:10:23

But I've really enjoyed just having a bit more time to spend

0:10:230:10:26

with the people I love and the people I've neglected for the last ten years!

0:10:260:10:29

You know, spending more time with my family and my friends

0:10:290:10:33

and being free to do stuff with them like go on holiday.

0:10:330:10:36

It's perfectly normal, I think, not to necessarily have a really clear direction.

0:10:360:10:41

Just I'm less used to it than most, I guess. As you are! Oh, completely. I'm lost.

0:10:430:10:47

Do you have an image of the next dream job

0:10:470:10:50

or how you'd want your life to be? Not really!

0:10:500:10:53

But the idea of being settled somewhere and have a home that's our home is really important to me.

0:10:530:10:57

I would love to be settled somewhere in five years' time and feel...

0:10:570:11:01

..kind of on a new path.

0:11:030:11:05

I want to be on a new path. But I don't know what that path is yet.

0:11:050:11:08

I think for me it's been really interesting to meet three totally different athletes,

0:11:100:11:14

different sports, different experiences in London 2012.

0:11:140:11:17

Whether it's been good, whether it's been bad,

0:11:170:11:20

they've all dealt with the experience, learned from it, and moved forward.

0:11:200:11:23

There's a real sense of optimism that whatever comes next, whatever future goals in the same career,

0:11:230:11:29

change of career, change of plan, change of life, that for all of us, there is life after London.

0:11:290:11:35

So we're here at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome,

0:11:420:11:44

one of the centrepiece venues for the Commonwealth Games.

0:11:440:11:47

Guess who I might be coming to meet.

0:11:470:11:49

And here he is, Sir Chris Hoy!

0:11:550:11:57

Who better to take us round the venues?! Do I have to call you Sir?

0:11:570:12:00

You don't, but you have to curtsy!

0:12:000:12:02

OK, you've really changed! Thank you, thank you!

0:12:020:12:06

Great to see you in this, named after you.

0:12:060:12:09

It's just such a wonderful tribute. But you won't be here? Yeah, well, I will be here.

0:12:090:12:14

But you won't be competing? I'll be here cheering the Scottish team on.

0:12:140:12:17

But, erm... Yeah, it's... I'm content in my career,

0:12:170:12:20

I'm content that I managed to achieve everything

0:12:200:12:22

and way beyond what I hoped to, but I knew it was the right time.

0:12:220:12:26

I knew I'd got the best out of myself and I wouldn't be at my best if I'd tried to compete here.

0:12:260:12:30

I didn't want to turn up and be... It's really interesting. We've seen a piece by Katherine Grainger,

0:12:300:12:35

who's still in the process, deciding what to do.

0:12:350:12:37

I did hope to continue and it would've been the dream end to my career,

0:12:370:12:40

to be able to race here in Scotland for the last time,

0:12:400:12:42

so it would've been fantastic, but maybe a bit greedy!

0:12:420:12:45

Just two years younger, maybe. Well, exactly! I know! That's...

0:12:450:12:48

When you look out, and you see... I know there's a multisport day going on here,

0:12:530:12:56

and you see all these kids trying out different sports and enjoying different sports,

0:12:560:13:01

that feels good, doesn't it?

0:13:010:13:03

Oh, it's brilliant. And it's not just been staged for us today either!

0:13:030:13:06

This is genuinely what it's like. It gets used all the time

0:13:060:13:09

and it's busy from first thing in the morning to last thing at night.

0:13:090:13:11

It's truly a world-class facility.

0:13:130:13:15

I don't think you could think of a bigger honour. It really is.

0:13:150:13:18

It's fantastic to think that your name is being linked with this

0:13:180:13:21

amazing facility and it'll be part of the future of the sport for many years to come.

0:13:210:13:25

So that's... To me, it's as important as winning medals,

0:13:250:13:27

as important as your own personal success -

0:13:270:13:29

to see that you're actually having some kind of longer-lasting impact on the sport that you love.

0:13:290:13:34

Well, Chris might be at the end of his career

0:13:360:13:38

but others are just at the beginning.

0:13:380:13:40

Last year, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor was the youngest member

0:13:400:13:43

of Britain's swimming team at the 2012 Games,

0:13:430:13:46

and at 16 years old, she was also part of a team that underperformed.

0:13:460:13:49

Well, the selection process has toughened up and the British team are determined

0:13:490:13:53

to make amends.

0:13:530:13:54

Helen Skelton found out all about that determination

0:13:540:13:57

when she spent a day with Siobhan-Marie O'Connor.

0:13:570:14:00

It's 8am and I'm in Bath to meet Siobhan,

0:14:020:14:04

who has already been in the gym for a couple of hours,

0:14:040:14:07

and she's not even halfway through her day.

0:14:070:14:10

She's qualified for the World Championships in Barcelona,

0:14:100:14:13

so there's plenty of work to be done.

0:14:130:14:15

I get here for 6.30 and then we'll have an hour circuits in the gym.

0:14:180:14:23

And then straight from there, we'll get in the pool

0:14:230:14:25

and do a two-hour swim.

0:14:250:14:27

British Championships, where she swam the time needed

0:14:320:14:36

to qualify for the upcoming World Championships.

0:14:360:14:39

I knew it was going to be tough because Great Britain have

0:14:400:14:43

such a strong 200 medley selection for the girls,

0:14:430:14:47

I knew there would be a lot going under the time,

0:14:470:14:49

so I just had to dig deep on that last length.

0:14:490:14:53

I managed to secure the time, so I was really happy with that.

0:14:530:14:56

It's an impressive achievement, since the whole squad faced

0:14:560:14:59

a tougher qualification process as a result of British swimming's failure to deliver at London 2012.

0:14:590:15:05

Three medals is not where we should be and it's not good enough.

0:15:050:15:09

We targeted six or seven, and to get three was very disappointing.

0:15:090:15:14

22.4...

0:15:140:15:15

We're going to take a much more selective,

0:15:160:15:19

smaller group to the World Championships.

0:15:190:15:21

What it means is, if you qualify for Great Britain,

0:15:210:15:24

you're probably already good enough to be a semifinalist or finalist.

0:15:240:15:27

It means the swimmer has got to be hard enough to cope with

0:15:270:15:30

that pressure at the trials, which means when they go to

0:15:300:15:32

the Worlds or the Olympics, they can cope with that pressure.

0:15:320:15:36

With Siobhan, you know, she went to the Worlds and the Olympics,

0:15:360:15:40

she has experienced it now, and for her, the next thing is to make the finals and the podium,

0:15:400:15:45

because I firmly believe she is capable of a podium position.

0:15:450:15:49

Competing at a home games is arguably one of the most valuable experiences

0:15:490:15:53

a young athlete can have, but in Siobhan's case,

0:15:530:15:56

the challenges she faced in qualifying for London are perhaps just as important.

0:15:560:16:02

Her dream was almost cut short

0:16:020:16:04

when she missed out in her preferred event at the first Olympic trials.

0:16:040:16:08

Fortunately, there was a second chance.

0:16:080:16:10

After a few months of intensive breaststroke training,

0:16:100:16:17

It was a puncher's chance.

0:16:170:16:20

I don't think many people thought it was going to happen,

0:16:200:16:22

but this was going to be my last chance -

0:16:220:16:25

I just trained so hard, focused everything on breaststroke, and it all fell into place, really.

0:16:250:16:31

That one minute of that race changed my life.

0:16:310:16:34

COMMENTATOR: Spofforth hands over to Siobhan-Marie O'Connor.

0:16:340:16:38

What a great opportunity for her.

0:16:380:16:40

Having made the breaststroke, I had an opportunity for the relay,

0:16:400:16:44

so I got to swim in an Olympic final.

0:16:440:16:46

When I missed out at the first trials,

0:16:460:16:48

if someone had told me I would be swimming in an Olympic final

0:16:480:16:52

a few months later, I would have said, "No way!"

0:16:520:16:55

But it all fell into place and it was incredible.

0:16:550:16:58

Despite her age, she's got amazing experience already at the top events.

0:16:580:17:03

17 years old, being an Olympian already, is amazing.

0:17:030:17:07

She has come on a hell of a lot in the past couple of years.

0:17:070:17:10

You know, I think she has really matured in her performances as well.

0:17:100:17:14

Alongside competing at the top and improving her mental strength,

0:17:140:17:17

Siobhan has been working on her physical strength, too,

0:17:170:17:20

and most days that means at least three hours in the gym.

0:17:200:17:24

These sessions obviously help your physicality,

0:17:240:17:27

but it seems it helps team morale.

0:17:270:17:29

You are all having a laugh in here as well as sweating! Definitely!

0:17:290:17:33

In the pool, you have got your head down and you can't really speak to people,

0:17:330:17:37

but in here we can chat to each other and have a bit of banter.

0:17:370:17:40

CHEERING AND LAUGHTER

0:17:430:17:45

Sorry!

0:17:470:17:48

For you, then, how does it compare? Do you prefer being in the pool,

0:17:480:17:51

or how do you feel about doing the weights?

0:17:510:17:55

I know have a lot I can improve on in the gym,

0:17:550:17:57

because I'm like a fish out of water!

0:17:570:18:00

This is really important. With John and stuff,

0:18:000:18:03

I'm hoping to get a lot stronger and fitter.

0:18:030:18:07

Siobhan deals with an intensive training regime -

0:18:070:18:10

she's taking an A-level and regularly goes abroad for training camps and competitions.

0:18:100:18:15

At 17, that's a lot to handle,

0:18:150:18:18

so living at home with her family gives her the support she needs.

0:18:180:18:22

She's off tomorrow, so this is our Sunday dinner.

0:18:220:18:26

Are you all going out to Barcelona? Yeah. Who gets the most stressed?

0:18:260:18:30

Definitely Mum, she can't watch it.

0:18:300:18:33

If I hear that she is winning, I'll look up and I'll cheer her on.

0:18:330:18:38

Otherwise I have my head in my hands or in my bag.

0:18:380:18:42

I can't... My nerves!

0:18:420:18:44

Siobhan is very competitive when she races, when she trains.

0:18:440:18:52

Especially in swimming.

0:18:520:18:53

They train so hard, day in, day out, and she sacrifices so much -

0:18:530:18:58

gives up sleepovers, parties, you know, sort of boyfriends.

0:18:580:19:04

So you know how much they sacrifice, that's why...

0:19:040:19:08

But it's the same for every parent, they want their child to do well

0:19:080:19:11

because they know how much they have sacrificed.

0:19:110:19:14

For you, the Worlds is the thing on the horizon, that is what you are

0:19:140:19:18

training for, but how often do you think about the Commonwealth Games?

0:19:180:19:22

How often do you think about Rio? People must ask about that, post-London. Definitely.

0:19:220:19:27

The good thing about swimming, there is always something

0:19:270:19:30

at the end of the year, even when it is not the Olympics and Worlds.

0:19:300:19:33

Glasgow is a good halfway point between the two Olympics,

0:19:330:19:36

to see where you are. You always think about it,

0:19:360:19:40

because that is the next big thing which is coming up.

0:19:400:19:43

If you've been inspired to get active, go to our website

0:19:430:19:48

to find out more, or find us on Twitter.

0:19:480:19:51

Thank you! After you.

0:19:540:19:56

This part of the city has been undergoing regeneration

0:20:040:20:07

for some time, hasn't it? Yeah.

0:20:070:20:09

This is a part of Glasgow that really suffered

0:20:090:20:12

with the closure of shipyards and industrial work.

0:20:120:20:16

Yes, there's Celtic Park, Parkhead, just over there.

0:20:160:20:20

The opening ceremony. Yeah. Any idea what it will consist of?

0:20:200:20:23

I've no idea! You're asking the wrong man! Favourite Scottish band?

0:20:230:20:27

It's going to have The Proclaimers in there somewhere, isn't it?

0:20:270:20:31

HE LAUGHS

0:20:310:20:32

If it does, I didn't know! I'm not letting the cat out of the bag!

0:20:320:20:37

It reminds me of Manchester before the Commonwealth Games in 2002,

0:20:370:20:41

the amount of work that was done to regenerate that part of the city.

0:20:410:20:44

It's a similar area, and you see how Manchester was transformed,

0:20:440:20:48

so I'm sure it will have a similar effect.

0:20:480:20:50

The athletes' village is nearby, isn't it? Yeah, it's 85% finished.

0:20:500:20:54

The houses and flats will be low-cost housing afterwards.

0:20:540:20:58

That's right.

0:20:580:20:59

One of the big factors for the success of London,

0:20:590:21:01

apart from you guys doing well and the venues being great -

0:21:010:21:04

the Games Makers made the Games so enjoyable -

0:21:040:21:07

seeing their joy at saying hello,

0:21:070:21:09

and the Games Makers are going to be a factor here. They will be.

0:21:090:21:14

I believe the stats...

0:21:140:21:16

There were 15,000 Games Maker slots, 50,000 people applied.

0:21:160:21:19

That's more than the Manchester and Melbourne Games combined

0:21:190:21:23

in terms of applications.

0:21:230:21:24

There is huge interest, and when people come to a city

0:21:240:21:27

that is the biggest thing - if you can get people welcomed,

0:21:270:21:30

make them feel they are part of it, and put on a great show, a party.

0:21:300:21:33

We can put on a good party in Scotland, so I think it will be

0:21:330:21:36

the best Commonwealth Games we've ever seen.

0:21:360:21:40

Cheers. Smart cab! Lovely! Thank you!

0:21:420:21:46

Another iconic Scottish venue.

0:21:470:21:50

Normally, in the tunnel at Hampden Park, the national stadium,

0:21:520:21:55

it's the sound of football boots running out here.

0:21:550:21:58

Next summer it will be the sound of athletics spikes.

0:21:580:22:01

Yeah, it's going to be quite a transformation.

0:22:010:22:03

So there'll be Mo Farah, Usain Bolt, Jess Ennis, David Rudisha, all running here.

0:22:030:22:10

It's amazing to think how it's going to be transformed.

0:22:100:22:14

It's an iconic football location but to see it with a track...

0:22:140:22:17

I'm not sure how they're going to do it! Luckily enough,

0:22:170:22:21

Suzanne is just the lady to tell us how this track is going to work.

0:22:210:22:23

I've heard a metre higher.

0:22:260:22:26

A lot more than a metre higher.

0:22:260:22:28

More like two metres. More about Chris' height, in fact.

0:22:280:22:31

You were saying it's an iconic football stadium

0:22:310:22:34

but where we are standing is where the 100m straight will be.

0:22:340:22:38

We'll be building it up to about this height.

0:22:380:22:40

Hampden is an oval ground so it lends itself

0:22:400:22:42

to the shape of athletics, but it is not quite big enough.

0:22:420:22:45

It will go right up to that blue wall there.

0:22:450:22:48

That will be the first row of seats? Pretty much.

0:22:480:22:51

More to the point, it'll become a football stadium at the end of it,

0:22:510:22:54

so it's a temporary transformation.

0:22:540:22:56

What will success look like from this Commonwealth Games in about a year and three weeks' time?

0:23:000:23:05

I think seeing places packed to the rafters,

0:23:050:23:08

no spare seats, everybody getting involved,

0:23:080:23:11

everyone desperate to see some action, no matter what sport it is.

0:23:110:23:14

Which is what, in the end, happened in London.

0:23:140:23:16

If we can get the same thing here in Glasgow,

0:23:160:23:18

to me, that would be a sign of success.

0:23:180:23:20

Thank you so much for your time because I know you are so busy,

0:23:200:23:24

a packed agenda. My pleasure, thank you.

0:23:240:23:26

Go along to whatever you have to do next. I'll run off this way!

0:23:260:23:29

Run! This is where you run, now. See you. Cheers.

0:23:290:23:31

While Sir Chris Hoy has been cycling pretty much his whole life,

0:23:370:23:40

Anthony Joshua only stepped in to a boxing ring at 18 years of age.

0:23:400:23:44

Four years later, he was Super Heavyweight Olympic boxing

0:23:440:23:47

champion but the path to gold was far from smooth and his life

0:23:470:23:51

could have taken a very different direction indeed,

0:23:510:23:54

were it not for the loving support of his family and his own

0:23:540:23:57

dedication. This is Anthony Joshua's story.

0:23:570:24:00

Hard to explain.

0:24:060:24:08

When I was boxing, you don't get paid, so I was finding means to

0:24:080:24:11

support myself, but at the same time, I was trying to concentrate on

0:24:110:24:15

becoming a full-time athlete.

0:24:150:24:17

I needed an opportunity. But I am a proud man so I don't rely on anyone.

0:24:170:24:21

It led into me carrying some cannabis and I was removed from

0:24:210:24:28

the Olympic team and had my boxing licence removed.

0:24:280:24:32

It was tough for the family but we pulled through and it's given him

0:24:320:24:37

a wake-up call. He has learned from his experience.

0:24:370:24:40

Luckily, they allowed me to continue to box, which was a blessing.

0:24:400:24:45

I've thought, this is it, this is my last opportunity.

0:24:450:24:47

He first walked in the gym in 2008, he came with his cousin Ben.

0:24:500:24:59

All right, mate? I'm good, thank you.

0:24:590:25:02

Good to see you. I'd told him I want to get fit, I want to get stronger.

0:25:020:25:07

And he said, "Look, why don't you come for a real workout and see what

0:25:070:25:10

"I get up to down the boxing gym."

0:25:100:25:11

That was how it started. I didn't really read too much into it.

0:25:110:25:16

I didn't take it seriously. He did but I didn't.

0:25:160:25:20

A day old... Look at your coconut head!

0:25:200:25:22

They say a coconut is hard to smash and maybe that's why I got into boxing!

0:25:240:25:28

THEY LAUGH

0:25:280:25:30

I can remember when I got sparring,

0:25:300:25:32

there was about seven heavyweights in the gym.

0:25:320:25:35

The first two I was doing well until I come across a more experienced heavyweight.

0:25:350:25:40

I had a Slovakian here, he was a top class heavyweight, and he used to

0:25:400:25:45

box circles around Josh, frustrate him.

0:25:450:25:52

throwing hooks, spinning around like Michael Jackson would!

0:25:520:25:55

I felt like I failed myself. Failure was kind of like a

0:25:550:25:59

motivation. I always went back and

0:25:590:26:01

started seeing improvements and improvements. A year later, Josh

0:26:010:26:04

beat him up. After one round they had to stop, his face was a mess.

0:26:040:26:08

And that is how, in a matter of a year, somebody who had been

0:26:080:26:12

out-boxing Josh and doing what he wanted with him, couldn't handle him.

0:26:120:26:16

That's when I realised I could get good at this.

0:26:160:26:18

If I keep on working hard. Are you fit? Yeah. Lift up your top.

0:26:180:26:23

What are you weighing now? LAUGHTER

0:26:260:26:29

What are you weighing now? 107.

0:26:310:26:35

I could see the changes in him. He was very eager to go to the

0:26:350:26:39

boxing club. And the next year, he

0:26:390:26:41

was entered into competitions and he won, and then he kept winning.

0:26:410:26:47

I was thinking, "Oh, my gosh! Is that what boxing is doing to my son?"

0:26:480:26:52

I won't swear, but he is a nasty

0:26:520:26:55

piece of work in the ring and that's the way you've got to be.

0:26:550:26:59

At the end of the day, in the ring, you have got to

0:26:590:27:03

hit them before they hit you. You can't be Mr Nice Guy, shaking hands.

0:27:030:27:07

But Josh isn't. I went through the Novices,

0:27:070:27:10

Haringey Box Cup and so on.

0:27:100:27:12

Then I became an ABA champion.

0:27:120:27:14

I didn't know about Olympic boxing when I first laced up

0:27:140:27:18

my gloves. So my goal was to become an ABA champion

0:27:180:27:23

and then a professional boxer.

0:27:230:27:26

And then I found out about the Olympic boxing when I

0:27:260:27:30

started to become more of an elite boxer.

0:27:300:27:33

Representing Great Britain, Silver medallist, Anthony Joshua!

0:27:330:27:40

I could hear the roar, the cheer, the support they gave me.

0:27:400:27:44

The most rousing reception...

0:27:440:27:47

It was something like a gladiator moment,

0:27:470:27:50

you know when they are about to go out into the battlefield...

0:27:500:27:53

The opening bell sounds to determine the final gold medal.

0:27:530:27:58

In boxing, it is either, you win or you lose, that's your Olympic dream gone.

0:28:000:28:04

He's getting clipped by thunderous shots in the corner.

0:28:040:28:07

Joshua is trying to fight back, but he has been rocked solidly.

0:28:070:28:10

It is Camarelli who leads Joshua by three.

0:28:150:28:17

Going into round three, I said to myself, whatever happens from here,

0:28:170:28:21

I want to walk out with my head held high.

0:28:210:28:25

And a spirited rally from Anthony Joshua!

0:28:270:28:29

And rousing reception from the crowd greets that work.

0:28:290:28:33

More left hand from Joshua. Come on, Josh, you can do this!

0:28:330:28:38

I had the banner over my face.

0:28:380:28:40

I can tell you, my heart was beating.

0:28:400:28:43

I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

0:28:430:28:46

Here's the official verdict...

0:28:480:28:52

In the blue corner...

0:28:520:28:54

So, I looked across,

0:28:540:28:56

and I thought, I'm the one in the blue!

0:28:560:28:59

Representing Great Britain - Anthony Joshua.

0:28:590:29:03

It was like, gosh, gosh, he has won! I was so happy!

0:29:030:29:07

I was so happy for him.

0:29:070:29:08

Anthony Joshua is the Olympic Super Heavyweight Champion.

0:29:080:29:11

A wonderful achievement!

0:29:110:29:14

Everything I gained from the Olympics is a

0:29:170:29:20

positive experience. There's not one negative thing. It's made me tough

0:29:200:29:23

and stronger and given me a great opportunity.

0:29:230:29:27

I am now a heavyweight boxer. No more super heavyweight.

0:29:270:29:31

I've got rid of the head guard and the vest. As a professional boxer,

0:29:310:29:37

my end goal is to become a world champion, an undisputed world champion.

0:29:370:29:42

Some fighters in their whole lifetime, they never do what he has

0:29:420:29:46

done. He's been to the Europeans,

0:29:460:29:49

the Worlds and the Olympics in four years.

0:29:490:29:52

He sleeps boxing, wakes up to boxing, he dreams boxing,
