Episode 10 Late Kick Off London and the South East

Great name, by the way. I made my debut at 24 which, in football

terms, is really late. I didn't even expect to play my first season.

You are very modest, mate. How did you find out you had the condition?

I was 16, at the football club, and I had had the ball. As I came down,

I collapsed. -- headed the ball. I remembered from this day, being

carted off. 1 I woke up, did not know what had happened. It was not

until I got to the hospital, and my mother said she -- I had had a fit.

I said, what? When I was told I had epilepsy, that is when it kicked in.

I was thinking, will I be able to play football still? I didn't

wanted to affect me anyway. I went out and just got on with it. Tell

me about how you treat your condition. It is simple. I have two

15 milligrams twice a day, once in the morning and one in the evening

at 6pm. I have it with dinner. It is as simple as that. I can't help

but notice the T-shirt, "Passion, power, progress." It describes how

a play. The progress with my epilepsy. It represents me. And you

wear this under your skirt -- under your shirt? Yes, during games. I

think it had -- I feel that it helps me. This is what I about.

have seen the world of football coming together with Fabrice Muamba

collapsing on the football pitch. For very different reasons. Did

that bring any memories back off when you were 16? I can relate to

being on the football field and collapsing and waking up. Do you

believe there has ever been a time where a club has looked at you and

found out that you have had epilepsy and said, maybe not?

hoping not. It is kind of discrimination. I hope that is the

reason, not because of what I have. I have played against teams that

have actually let me go on trial, and they have said, no, not for us.

I have played against these managers and one. It is a nice

feeling to play against them and prove them wrong. Good to see in

doing so well and positive news about Fabrice Muamba over the

weekend. Do you think that incident, and some of the things we have been

talking about in the light of this, will make a difference to screening,

preventing this happening in the future? I hope so. It is great news,

his recovery. There is a long way to go, but I was involved with the

PFA for five years as chairman. I know the great work they have done,

and they have started screaming scholarship players that come into

full-time football. But there are a number of players that have come

into the ranks, maybe from non- League, like Leon Legge, and we

have some players at Charlton that have come in, and you have to test

those boys. Normally, our club doctor has said that if you don't

pick up a problem at 16, it is very rare to get it later. I know the

people keep talking about constant screaming, but really, between 16

and 21 is when you pick it up. should talk about Leon Legge

because he came to the game quite late. You have seen him play

recently. He is a big unit, I believe we would say. He is an

inspiration for anybody out there who suffers from the same thing. I

think Gary Matt Brittin was a diabetic. Football is a challenge

anyway but to come in from non- League, 24, grabbing an opportunity.

They won for nail, they played some excellent football against Carlisle.

And back to winning ways of the weekend for Bradford. -- four 0.

Chris, you have been at Cheltenham for 14 months. What has your

biggest challenge been on the job? I had a big challenge last year, we

had a really tough season. It was a tough baptism for me but I learned

a lot about myself and my staff and my players. I was backed up well by

the board. The key to it all was selling Carl Dickinson to Arsenal

because it gave me some money because we are struggling

financially. -- we were struggling. I made big changes on the playing

side. I brought in a group of players that have really gelled.

They really enjoy playing with the club and the supporters are happy

with them. You have had a great with them. You have had a great

season so far. It did not work out against Huddersfield. Jordan Rhodes

scored goal number 484 of the season. You are not happy with the

sending off. What happened? His 35th goal of the season. It is

outstanding what he has done, and it was a penalty. And this was

Darel Russell's sending off. That was the second bad tackle from

Antony Kay. The first one was on Scott Wagstaff and it went

unpunished. Darryl kicked out, so there was no problem I have no

are trying to find a good balance. I have not changed my team too much.

"If any, which manager do you go to to ask advice?" I shouldn't really

say but I have spoken to one or two. I am a fledgling manager. It is new

to me. My first full season. I tried to remember what those

managers are played under, Alan Curbishley, Alan Pardew, Nigel

Pearson, Sven Goran Eriksson, what did they do in these situations?

Ultimately, you have to look at yourself and interact with your

staff. They have a role to play. Ultimately, it is about getting a

group together and galvanising them. Charlton are desperate to get into

showing great composure to seal the win, leaving the Hornets within six

points of the play-offs. The Palace manager said the opening

half-hour cost his side their unbeaten run. Steve Davis back his

ninth of the season for the Rams. Friedman made two changes at the

break but his side went further behind. Gardner was penalised for

handball. No mistake made from this spot kick. The manager praised his

team for not giving up, and this bizarre goal came from a back pass.

Quick-thinking Glenn lorry set up Chris Martin to score the sixth

goal of his loan spell. Darren Ambrose further reduced arrears in

the last minute, and the defeat means play-offs now look like they

are some way off. Millwall's miserable home form

continues and this time it was Leeds United who did the damage.

McCormack got the only goal, helping them forget their midweek

thrashing by Nottingham Forest. The Lions weren't without their chances.

Alex Bruce took down another player, with this loose ball being fired

into the net. Unfortunately the referee had already awarded a spot-

kick. Unfortunate, because Millwall are still without a home win this

West Ham, the slip continues. Too many draws. Draw specialists, apart

from the win against Burnley. They have got nice strikers, they should

probably start playing two up front, but they were drawn games. Reading

is a huge game on Saturday, but five wins from the eight games, it

is still in their own hands. When you think about where Brighton are

now, fourth in the championship, it must be hard not to get the old

dream machine going? So moving to aspire to, of course. Looking at

Southampton and Norwich, they are the role models for clubs in League

One, such as ourselves and the two Sheffields. You don't want to look

too far ahead, but if you get this job done first, you can bring that

momentum to the next season. I was at Leicester, got in the play-offs

the following season, and it happens to promoted clubs that they

have still got the good feeling running through the club and they

can possibly go into the championship. It is the moment we

have all been waiting for, sort of. We take one fan from each division
