reform Academies really help make the stars of tomorrow? My concern

is it's not been thought through. There is no reason for young

players to want to go and be developed anywhere else. We've got

the action from tonight's League One match between Brentford and

Carlisle. We take to the terraces to sample the sounds of the Orient.

And revisit the day Dowie dealt Hello and welcome to Late Kick Off.

Alongside Mark Bright in the studio tonight we have the Millwall

manager Kenny Jackett. Kenny, your FA Cup run came to an end against

Bolton and you're straight back into it tomorrow. Yes, we have to

More from Kenny throughout the show, first tonight, when Crystal Palace

met Watford over the weekend there were plenty of products from the

youth system on both sides. But the two clubs have different views on

whether plans to reform the Academy system will help or hinder their

ability to bring on the next The elite player performance plan

might sound like a government initiative, but it is a new system

that will revolutionise the youth football at your club and every

club across the country. Under the new system it's a fixed formula. A

player that might be worth millions now could be only worth a few

hundred 1000. My big concern is it's not been thought through with

enough timescale and enough opinions being asked. Essentially,

it's going to mean less opportunity for smaller clubs and less

opportunity for younger players as well. Despite concerns, one of the

chief aims of the scheme is to ensure the best players are given

access to the best facilities and best coaches. At Crystal Palace,

Gary is it has overseen the development of scores of youth team

players have gone on to play for the first team. We've got fantastic

recruitment staff here and a team of scouts that work hard trying to

get the best players in South London. We've got both full-time

and part-time dedicated coaches. With the scheme and its overall

format, it's a very good idea. The only concerns we would have of the

compensation fees that have come alongside that. They have been

reduced. We recently probably got the record transfer fee for John

Vostok. But we probably only get a 7th of the figure we got them.

put more money into the youth academy for less security on

compensation. The Football League voted for it as a whole but we did

and vote for it as a club. We accept that. While Crystal Palace

have been vocal in airing their fears, of Watford, who have seen 49

home-grown players make the first team since their Academy opened,

are confident that new rules will be impact a youth development.

reputation of producing young players that creates a great

environment for young players. There's no reason for young players

to want to go and be developed anywhere else. But clubs like

Watford and Crystal Palace will no longer be able to rely on their

geographical poor. New rules will also mean teams won't be restricted

to developing players who live within 90 minutes. Some fear this

could be detrimental to the community based nature of the game.

I'd be disappointed if it meant there were less opportunities frog

young guys for the local teams, especially at Crystal Palace, to

get the opportunities to play. you get a 13 or 14-year-old getting

cherry-picked from his area and put in a location he is unfamiliar with,

he could fall out of love with the game of football. It's all about

enjoying the game at that age. That is what it's all about. Having

accepted the scheme, new rules will be implemented in July. Improving

the quality of young players in this country is the ultimate

objective. The hope is that it won't come at the expense of the

clubs in the Football League. The new measures begin in July. Let's

talk Millwall now. Can you see the pluses and minuses of the new

measures? Guess, they are trying to give them the best games programme

to play against the best from a very early age. It will work

towards the bigger clubs having the best players, there's no doubt

about that. But there are certain clubs outside of the Premier League

that have a fantastic reputation. You highlighted two there, Crystal

Palace and my old club, Watford, who have such a good reputation of

giving people a chance at an early age if they are good enough, I

think that reputation will continue to attract and then keep good and

promising schoolboys. Palace are worried, you do work down there

with some of the young striker's. Are the concerns bounded, is there

a problem for a club like Crystal Palace? As Dobbie said, in essence

it is a good idea but the compensation side of it. They got

�750,000 for John Vostok. If someone else was taken it would be

180,000. If I was an Academy director at Arsenal, Chelsea or

Spurs, I would have �1 million and I'd go to Watford, Palace and

Charlton and cherry-pick. I'd pick the best players at 15 years old.

Or �1 million Eakin take a chance on the best talent in London and

you are bound to get one Lord two of them come through. If that

happens to Palace and the Premier League sides, isn't it a case that

Palace take some of the players away from the likes of Millwall are

well -- as well? There is a natural pecking order, definitely. It has

to adjust at the top level. There are only 11 people that can play at

the big clubs. With the pressure on and the foreign players coming into

the top part of the game, or you will see his may be at 19, it might

be longer, some of the smaller clubs might have to wait a bit

longer, let other clubs develop them, pick them off at 19.

Somewhere along the line there has to be a review of the loans system,

where the smaller clubs can contribute to developing these

players because even though they go in at 14 or 15, the chances of them

playing for Chelsea or Arsenal until they've maybe got 150 League

games under their belts are minimal. A review may be of the loan system

later on is something that could run alongside. Brighty, the big

Bourzat Palace were playing at the weekend and they got the better of

what it. Yes, much needed as well. It is rare they score this amount

of goals, Palace. This is the best win since they beat Brighton 3-1.

run now it's come to an end, they now have to sort yourself out in

on Saturday. -- yes, they did enjoy it. For us now, this season is

about surviving, staying in the championship. We've worked hard to

get into the championship, six points above the relegation zone.

We have an opportunity against Middlesbrough on Tuesday to try to

make that nine. We have to now get onto concentrating on the league

and making sure we sustain our championship status. Did you enjoy

the Cup run as a manager? When you're not safe in the league you

must think that is what we've got to concentrate on and get that

right, but he had some much success this season. A yes, we had a good

cup run. It gives us the chance to play against some Premier League

players. We've had two replays in there and the extra games give you

revenue that can help you in the league. They certainly help you in

terms of the structure of the club. No Football League action for you
