Welcome to Late Kick Off as the race to go up and stay up

Derby fans know him as a wholehearted club captain but me to

Shaun Barker the music fan and collector of vinyl. It is quite a

big thing for a footballer to be in to something like that. Downloading

some rubbish songs from the internet. Shrewsbury's hopes of

automatic promotion faced scrutiny tonight. We have the best moment.

At the National Football Centre is nearly ready and Darren Moore can

job it was to stop them. David "Ned" Kelly played nearly 700 games

for 10 different league clubs, including Walsall and Leicester. He

has also been assistant manager at Derby and forest. And fellow

Republic of Ireland international Dean Kiely chalked up more than 750

appearances in 11 years and is now a coach at West Brom. Great to see

you. Ned, you have not changed! Different colour hair! The Derby

County captain as you have never seen him before now. Shaun Barker

is one of football's hard men but is a gentle giant with a passion

for music. He told us about his love of vinyl records and his

love him. He is a great captain. Behind the scenes, he is one they

all turn to. He is a great character. The deer he comes into

his hilarious. You'd think he was a rocker. He is our leader and we all

look up to him. But away from the dressing room, the captain is a

love of fashion, not art and most of all vinyl. For me, it is just

the look - the hard work and going through them. At a moment, I am

lucky to have got quite a few records of The Cure. I am massively

into The Cure at the moment. Last summer when he was injured unstuck

in the treatment room, his obsession began. -- and stuck.

found myself in bed with the machine on for eight hours a day

and I decided I was going to start collecting vinyl. I don't think you

really understand the difference in sound quality, and the kind of

honesty about a record until you listen to one. It is a bit of an

obsession with me at the moment. you think you would get away with

I don't think I would go that far. I spoke to the boss about everyone

choosing a track for me to put onto a playlist before we went out to

play each game and I just about persuaded him. I knew there would

be a few good track summer. He has come round to it? Yes, he gets the

he carried any injury but refused to have it until Derby were out of

danger. The gaffer wanted me to do a job of as being available for a

Saturday and to choose again whenever he needed me. I had about

seven months without training, which was tough. He puts Derby and

his family first. Family is a huge thing for me. Mum and dad started

fostering when I was about two years old and in the 27 years I

have been alive, there have been about 180 kids coming in and out of

my parentss' doors. You see kids with so many different problems and

as a family, we try to help them as much as possible. At Christmas, we

are expecting 25 people around the table. It is always interesting and

there is never a quiet moment that my mum and dad's house! It is

interesting because you shouldn't stereotype, but you are not the

average footballer. No, I have always said to everyone that has

asked me about that but I am eight student who plays football for a

living. I love my music, dance and fashion. I would have done art and

media. I was quite lucky that I Do you think the student who became

a footballer will ever play in the Premier League? I don't know. If

you had asked me a few years ago, I would have hoped so. I do hope so

and I hope it is for Derby County. Hopefully, over the next three

years, we keep on pushing and by the players we needed to get us out

of this division. To be captain of a club like Derby County is a

massive thing and I am very proud, and I feel privileged.

Interesting views from Shaun Barker. It is refreshing to see someone who

is not the archetypal football. Here has some collection! He has

some absolute classics. Will somebody so young, as well. He is

not a 40-year-old looking at vinyl records. He is a young kid. He has

pinched them from my garage! He is also amazingly grounded, which is

something you don't often get. The fostering with his parents at

having seen kids come and go through his front door. He has done

very well. He has settled into the club very well. Like the supporters

said, they are very impressed with how he performs. I think he missed

the first 16 League games of this season and then he came in and

suddenly, the defence was rejuvenated. But this was about his

record and what he does away from football but you can tell he is a

solid citizen, a straightforward lad to you want in your team. He

heads it, kicks it and makes good decisions. The plans have taken him

to their hearts and when you hear stories that he played on for six

months with an injury that required surgery, that is what they love to

hear. Players are accused of not wanting to play sometimes, and for

a player to do that, captain a team and go through everything and put

it to the back, it is great. It is frustrating that when players pick

up little niggles and not so and may be shy away from that, for him

to say, "I will not be at the training ground every day but if

you put me on Saturday I'll give it my best," is great. Do centre-

halves easily make great captains? Not necessarily. We had a brilliant

captain who was a goalkeeper. Not necessarily. You might say the same

thing? I make a case for goalkeepers being captains! People

say they are a long way away from the action but I think it is about

character. I think centre-halves as a type are the sort of standard

fellers. A on the theme of music, who are the people who are

responsible for the best and worst music you have heard in the

The race for automatic promotion from League Two is perhaps the

closest of any of the issues to be sorted out in the next couple of

months. Shrewsbury have missed out in the play-offs three times in the

last five years - can they avoid that lottery? This event, it was

they need to get a real burst and put some points on the board. It

has been a struggle and I think the manager has conducted himself well

under difficult circumstances. He has tried to speak about the

players and making them better and get them to play as a team. That

will be thinking there is no time like the present to get the first

done great over the last few weeks. He has concentrated on the players

and everything else that goes beyond the circus of been at a

manager coming in, he has to assess the squat and pick the players he

like Matt isn't in his plans, but things change quickly and if he

does not move to Leeds, he will work hard in training and tried to

get back in. It is uncomfortable for me. When a player reacts to a

situation that might be for a week or two, if he reacts in a negative

way, it can cast a bit of a shadow over him for the rest of the season.

Sometimes, when I was a player, I tried to take the blinkers off and

look at the bigger picture. He might be disappointed one week or

Burton, the �100 million state-of- the-art facility will be worth the

wait. I lot of people have said will this help us win the World

Cup? The short answer is I hope yes, but it may not be the World Cup

that everyone wants. You do think it is in the right part of the

Country? Absolutely. It is in the middle of England. Football belongs

in the north, the east, the West, the self. Just two months ago,

Fabio Capello said the centre was incredible, the best in Europe. It

is a shame he will not use it as England coach. With such a big

build up, it needed someone with a certain stature to show me around.

one of them a full-size indoor pitch. For me this is one of the

best bits. This is the indoor or centre. It you think that this will

do is help the performers? And absolutely. If we want to make

headway in Europe and worldwide and we have the best players, then we

pitches. The design and layout is key for the England squad and the
