Preston North End tell us tonight that they have to save 750,000 per | :00:06. | :00:10.
month. How does Chairman Peter Ridsdale plan to do that? Welcome | :00:10. | :00:20.
:00:20. | :00:30. | ||
Coming up on tonight's programme, the real state of play at Preston. | :00:30. | :00:36.
Chairman Peter Ridsdale reveals the club's financial future. | :00:36. | :00:39.
A Late Kick Off look at Gresty Road's next big thing. We scout | :00:39. | :00:43.
striker Nick Powell. And argy bargy at Bury. The team | :00:43. | :00:51.
mates who paid the penalty for this spot kick spat. | :00:51. | :00:54.
With me in the studio tonight the man in charge at Prenton Park, | :00:54. | :00:57.
Tranmere boss Les Parry and an Oldham Athletic legend who's been | :00:57. | :01:04.
on a special Late Kick Off mission over the weekend, Andy Ritchie. | :01:04. | :01:07.
First tonight, the chairman of Preston North End has told me today | :01:07. | :01:10.
that his priority is to save 750,000 per month in an effort to | :01:10. | :01:15.
get the club breaking even and on a firm financial footing. Peter | :01:15. | :01:18.
Ridsdale has been in charge since December and tells me in an | :01:18. | :01:20.
excluisve interview tonight his plan is big earners out, more fans | :01:21. | :01:30.
:01:31. | :01:31. | ||
in and the team on the up. When you came to Preston, how do | :01:31. | :01:35.
they compare financially to some of your other clubs? I think the | :01:35. | :01:41.
difference is, we have an owner here who has the wherewithal to | :01:41. | :01:44.
make sure the fan base is stable but the similarity is that we were | :01:44. | :01:47.
spending too much money for our position in the Football League. My | :01:48. | :01:51.
challenge is to make sure we get value for money rather than just | :01:51. | :01:58.
spending it. The money being spent, was that through mistakes or just | :01:58. | :02:05.
the natural wear and tear of football? It is very easy to | :02:05. | :02:08.
criticise predecessors and plenty of people still criticise me for | :02:08. | :02:13.
things I have done but what we have here is an infrastructure for the | :02:13. | :02:15.
championship and a football team that is currently playing in League | :02:15. | :02:18.
One and we have to make sure that our overheads at the same as the | :02:18. | :02:23.
lead in which we are performing at. We have got contract here that are | :02:23. | :02:32.
probably OK but certainly were inappropriate in League One. He | :02:32. | :02:35.
therefore what you either have to do is a bounce straight back if you | :02:35. | :02:42.
can afford to do so or you have to cut your cloth and unfortunately we | :02:42. | :02:46.
had not cut our cloth and we are not bouncing straight back into the | :02:46. | :02:52.
championship. It is impossible to talk about finances without talking | :02:52. | :02:57.
about the owner and he recently said it is costing him a 750,000 a | :02:57. | :03:02.
month to run at the club, is that correct? If he said it, I will not | :03:02. | :03:08.
dispute it. My view is that a football club of this stature with | :03:08. | :03:13.
the sort of crowds we get should be able to break even. We cannot do | :03:13. | :03:17.
that over night, we are clearly not breaking even now, that must be her | :03:17. | :03:23.
challenge and the danger of that is our supporters saying, there is no | :03:23. | :03:28.
ambition left. That is not true. We can't run our own football club yet | :03:28. | :03:33.
still be ambitious and get promoted, that must be the object. How do you | :03:33. | :03:41.
come in and say -- save that amount of money? We have got to get people | :03:41. | :03:46.
to pay through the turnstiles or trim the squad down to a level that | :03:46. | :03:51.
is acceptable and that we have players who are paid needed once | :03:51. | :03:54.
salaries and again it doesn't happen overnight but you can make | :03:54. | :03:58.
giant strides a fairly quickly. I would like to think if we start | :03:58. | :04:02.
playing winning football, the crowds will come back. That helps | :04:02. | :04:09.
enormously because that is a single best source of revenue. We will be | :04:09. | :04:12.
willing and dealing with the players to make sure our overheads | :04:12. | :04:16.
are just as well. I'm not pretending the magic wand and make | :04:16. | :04:19.
it happen overnight but that has got to be a challenge. If we could | :04:19. | :04:26.
get promoted, we were suddenly get a significant amount of money, 4 | :04:26. | :04:31.
million coming from the television revenues just by being promoted. We | :04:31. | :04:33.
are going to challenge all the routes that are available, | :04:33. | :04:37.
promotion is probably the hardest challenge but we need to get there | :04:37. | :04:44.
sooner rather than later. investment is up to 20 million and | :04:44. | :04:47.
the owner has said it is not unreasonable to want some of that | :04:47. | :04:54.
back. Has he talked to you about that, the return on his investment? | :04:54. | :04:57.
Clearly, I am not going to make a public statement about private | :04:57. | :05:04.
conversations between him and myself. It is clear that he has | :05:04. | :05:09.
been a very successful benefactor for this club but without him, we | :05:09. | :05:14.
would not have survived. Am grateful for that and we all should | :05:14. | :05:19.
be. My object is to get this club into a situation where it has value, | :05:19. | :05:23.
it is not losing money every year and will succeed on the pitch. That | :05:23. | :05:27.
is an interesting challenge, one I have faced in the past, one I have | :05:27. | :05:32.
faced in the past and one I am looking forward to. Is it a | :05:32. | :05:42.
sustainable model? Think of Blackburn Rovers, is it sustainable | :05:42. | :05:45.
going for it having one man to gain so much on her shoulders or are you | :05:45. | :05:51.
acting and the King for other people to help? And that the person | :05:51. | :05:56.
to address the question to because I don't know -- own at the football | :05:56. | :06:01.
club. You should address to him. There are plenty of clubs out there | :06:01. | :06:05.
with single benefactors. Amateur in the long term but that is the best | :06:05. | :06:10.
solution for those clubs. If you look at Manchester City, Chelsea, | :06:10. | :06:14.
what happens to them that that benefactor dies he doesn't want to | :06:14. | :06:18.
write cheques any more? My objective is clear, too much at | :06:18. | :06:23.
this football club operates within the correct financial model, one | :06:23. | :06:28.
that is totally achievable. We had a good supporter base and there is | :06:28. | :06:31.
no reason why Preston North End football club cannot operate on a | :06:31. | :06:39.
financial viable model. If you do not get promotion and you cannot | :06:39. | :06:43.
offload a high earners and you are still losing seven had and 50,000 | :06:43. | :06:49.
a month, is the owner prepared to finance that? You have just thrown | :06:49. | :06:55.
a number of negatives at me. They are scenarios. If you said we | :06:55. | :07:00.
cannot get the higher earners of the pay roll, and number of our | :07:00. | :07:04.
players are out of contract this coming summer. Do I expect to get | :07:04. | :07:13.
promoted this year? I am not at her event. -- a clairvoyant. I want to | :07:13. | :07:19.
get the correct balance as soon as possible. I am aware of Mr | :07:19. | :07:23.
Hemmings's ability to fund it in the meantime but I have a challenge | :07:23. | :07:27.
here which I am fully aware of, I am very happy and grateful to be | :07:27. | :07:33.
here because I enjoying it very much. | :07:33. | :07:40.
He has a job on his hands. Did that sound familiar to you in League One | :07:40. | :07:45.
trying to pay Peter and Paul at the same time? Yes, you knock a few | :07:45. | :07:49.
zeroes off our amount but the model that he is talking about his ass | :07:49. | :07:54.
really. We made a small profit and nothing we will this year. Most | :07:54. | :08:00.
clubs will have to go that way now because you cannot just go pulling | :08:00. | :08:07.
money, throwing good money after bad. On one hand they have a severe | :08:07. | :08:11.
with Trevor Hemmings but it all rests with him. He wants the money | :08:11. | :08:16.
back. I am sure he does. That is a lot of money to have pumped into | :08:16. | :08:20.
one football club. There is a difficult one because as Peter said, | :08:20. | :08:24.
if he did decide to pull the plug, what happens to the football club? | :08:24. | :08:30.
They have got to get a more suitable plant in a place and it is | :08:30. | :08:34.
not great to be easy because getting higher wage earners off, | :08:34. | :08:38.
that is not just a thing you can do and say, that is it, we've got them | :08:38. | :08:43.
out of the building. It will be hard. Interesting comments about | :08:43. | :08:50.
the model, and naming Bolton and Manchester City, what happens if | :08:50. | :08:56.
someone at stops writing the cheques. If you are a fan, and | :08:56. | :09:01.
someone comes in with a big cheque book, do you rejoice? Yes, because | :09:02. | :09:07.
you do not think long-term in those circumstances. You think, we can | :09:07. | :09:14.
have more players. Then you worry about them pulling out when they do. | :09:15. | :09:21.
But the ones like Manchester City, they have gone, haven't they? | :09:21. | :09:29.
would be spend, spend, spend? would, yes, but I wouldn't be there. | :09:29. | :09:39.
:09:39. | :09:39. | ||
It was a disappointing weekend on the pitch for Preston. | :09:39. | :09:43.
While he was appointed last week, this game at home to Leyton Orient | :09:43. | :09:47.
really marked the start of the Graham Westley era at Deepdale. But | :09:47. | :09:50.
his first game in charge didn't go as planned despite new recruits | :09:50. | :09:56.
Holroyd, McAllister and Procter all picked from the start. But it was a | :09:56. | :09:59.
disjointed North End for the most part, something exploited after the | :09:59. | :10:02.
break by the Londoners whose goals came from Marc Laird and Jimmy | :10:02. | :10:07.
Smith. Stephen Schumacher was handily placed to put Bury in front | :10:07. | :10:12.
at home to Yeovil but that was only the start of his eventful afternoon. | :10:12. | :10:15.
Joe Skarz's header put The Shakers back in front after Yeovil's | :10:15. | :10:17.
immediate reply but the main talking point came ten minutes | :10:17. | :10:22.
before the break. After being brought down in the box, Giles Coke | :10:22. | :10:25.
fancied the resulting spot kick despite Schumacher being the | :10:25. | :10:27.
regular penalty taker leading to amazing scenes described by boss | :10:27. | :10:37.
:10:37. | :10:41. | ||
Richie Barker to BBC Radio Manchester's Bill Rice. I have | :10:41. | :10:45.
given him the responsibility to take penalties and as far as I'm | :10:45. | :10:53.
concerned, he knows that and it goes beyond that, whatever Stephen | :10:54. | :10:57.
says, goes. Schumacher eventually converted, Bury held on for a 3-2 | :10:57. | :11:00.
win. It ended goalless at Breezy Boundary Park but Oldham will know | :11:00. | :11:03.
they missed good chances against Exeter, none better than this late | :11:03. | :11:07.
Matt Smith header. Finally Dale who really needed something from this | :11:07. | :11:09.
relegation six pointer but they were second best throughout and | :11:09. | :11:15.
it's now nine without a win. Two from Stuart Beavon helped Wycombe | :11:15. | :11:25.
:11:25. | :11:30. | ||
I cannot think I have seen an argument go on as long as that. | :11:30. | :11:35.
Giles has apologised and has said that his emotions run high when he | :11:35. | :11:39.
is playing. He said all he could think about was getting the ball | :11:39. | :11:45.
are on the spot. No apology for wanting to win. He has said he | :11:45. | :11:48.
needs to respect the captain and manager even when emotions are | :11:48. | :11:58.
:11:58. | :12:01. | ||
running high. He liked it. I thought it was class. You used to | :12:01. | :12:06.
be a penalty taker. Did anyone try to make the ball off a you? | :12:06. | :12:14.
cannot remember that. I think he is are mown and should be thinking of | :12:14. | :12:23.
the captain as the penalty taker. - - on loan. Anyway, they scored, | :12:23. | :12:32.
that was the main thing. Let's have a look at your luck -- game at the | :12:32. | :12:41.
weekend, Bournemouth. You took the lead thanks to a tidy finish. That | :12:41. | :12:44.
lead thanks to a tidy finish. That is a quality goal, unlike the other | :12:44. | :12:52.
two. Described it. You can see, look where it goes, it has gone | :12:52. | :13:02.
:13:02. | :13:03. | ||
right in the stand. There is no stopping it. It is going to keep | :13:03. | :13:11.
right, right into the top corner. Was that a wind assisted? I think | :13:11. | :13:21.
the wind was actually against it! We have to mention it, what is | :13:21. | :13:28.
happening? We are playing well, to be quite honest. We are losing by | :13:28. | :13:33.
one goal all of the time. That is the difference in this league. It | :13:33. | :13:41.
is about a class, about a look. Once we get back on our way we will | :13:41. | :13:48.
be all right. How frustrating is it? It was tough all the way and | :13:48. | :13:55.
the play-offs were in sight. How frustrating is it for you now? | :13:55. | :14:02.
time that it really hits is when you get injuries in the squad. We | :14:02. | :14:06.
had four playing at the start of the season. That is a problem we | :14:06. | :14:10.
have got at the moment. You started the season saying that you wanted | :14:10. | :14:15.
it to be more than a fight for survival. Do you think that is | :14:15. | :14:21.
still the way forward? Very much so. We were in the bottom four and now | :14:21. | :14:29.
I think we are second. There is no reason we cannot get there. We have | :14:29. | :14:35.
already featured Preston North End. It is a massive club, isn't it? | :14:35. | :14:41.
think they have got the top five place. I think any of the five | :14:41. | :14:44.
going up will do well in the going up will do well in the | :14:45. | :14:48.
championship. We wish you well. Let's have a look at League One, | :14:48. | :14:56.
where there is some developing India's. -- some developing news. | :14:56. | :15:01.
Bridestowe remain deep in relegation trouble. -- Rochdale. | :15:01. | :15:07.
They have agreed personal terms with John Coleman to replace Steve | :15:07. | :15:17.
air as manager. There have been no teams -- terms agreed yet. I am for | :15:17. | :15:22.
Rochdale. They have got a top manager. He is the third longest | :15:22. | :15:30.
serving manager. I wonder what has swung it for him. I think it is a | :15:30. | :15:34.
North West club. He does not have to move. He is probably seeing | :15:34. | :15:40.
potential. He wants to go in there with Jimmy and get them out of the | :15:40. | :15:46.
bottom. Where does this leave Accrington Stanley? It is going to | :15:46. | :15:51.
be strange. Stanley without Coleman, they go together, they are | :15:51. | :15:57.
synonymous with each other. They will not want to be wasting any | :15:57. | :16:03.
time. They might have somebody in mind, I do not know. It might be | :16:04. | :16:11.
strange. It will be strange for me not to interview John Coleman. But | :16:11. | :16:14.
they will still have him in the region, which is good. | :16:14. | :16:19.
There is not too much action this week. Preston will get an | :16:19. | :16:24.
opportunity to make up against their last game. They will play | :16:24. | :16:31.
Notts County. Macclesfield will play AFC Wimbledon. You can keep up | :16:31. | :16:34.
to date on your local BBC radio stations. We will keep you updated | :16:34. | :16:40.
with all of the latest John Coleman and Rochdale news. And now to the | :16:40. | :16:47.
quiz that has got the ball talking. Peter Murphy was the only player | :16:47. | :16:57.
:16:57. | :16:58. | ||
sent off at the Bristol Rovers. What the mango buzzer, he swapped | :16:58. | :17:05.
shirts after a game with the Real Madrid. We also have a North West | :17:05. | :17:10.
favoured, Gordon Burns. Who scored the winning goal in last | :17:10. | :17:20.
:17:20. | :17:20. | ||
season's FA Cup final? What is the capital city of Wales? Cardiff. | :17:20. | :17:29.
What is the leader of the Liberal Democrats? Ed Miliband. No, it is | :17:29. | :17:39.
:17:39. | :17:43. | ||
Nick Clegg. What is twenty-five minus seven? 18. Which North West | :17:43. | :17:48.
side plays at the Reebok Stadium? Bolton. How many times has Brazil | :17:48. | :17:58.
:17:58. | :18:00. | ||
won the World Cup? Name a former Accrington Stanley manager? Do not | :18:00. | :18:10.
:18:10. | :18:13. | ||
say the current one. How many sides does a train will have? 3. -- a | :18:13. | :18:23.
:18:23. | :18:25. | ||
triangle. Yes! That was a little bit closer than the quiz last year. | :18:25. | :18:30.
That was Stanley at play. But how did they get on at the weekend? | :18:30. | :18:40.
:18:40. | :18:43. | ||
point but now they had opportunities to win it at | :18:43. | :18:46.
Aldershot. Michael Smith should have hit the target with this | :18:46. | :18:53.
header. The toe-poke and near-post follow up was saved as this one | :18:53. | :18:58.
ended in stalemate. Boss Gary Simpson bemoaned the windy | :18:58. | :19:02.
conditions at Swindon. His side might have taken the lead had Matt | :19:02. | :19:08.
Hamshaw not been off balance. They had to pay when Benson scored. The | :19:08. | :19:12.
sending off was controversial but the home side wasted the resulting | :19:12. | :19:20.
spot-kick. Three without a win for more come after 82 - 1 defeat to | :19:20. | :19:30.
:19:30. | :19:31. | ||
Turkey. -- after a 2 - 1 defeat to Torquay. The Shrimps were | :19:31. | :19:36.
galvanised after a sweet strike from a Phil Jevons. Then a claim | :19:36. | :19:45.
was dismissed for this bizarre bit But has to be one of the most | :19:45. | :19:49.
ridiculous decisions that I have ever seen at a football game. -- | :19:49. | :19:55.
that has to be. Nick Powell has attracted scouts from Manchester | :19:55. | :20:00.
United and Aston Villa after making a scouting -- starting line-up. | :20:00. | :20:05.
This is a good time to send our reporters down to see what all of | :20:05. | :20:11.
the fuss is about. Crewe is a small club with a | :20:11. | :20:15.
reputation for finding big names. This year it is a Nick Powell. | :20:15. | :20:23.
is not the same as anyone we have ever had before. He has always been | :20:23. | :20:28.
independent with his thinking. It is not about tricks. It is about | :20:28. | :20:33.
either scoring goals or stopping goals. He does all of those. He is | :20:33. | :20:40.
doing all of them very well and he is a good player. He has got a bit | :20:40. | :20:47.
of everything. He can stop goals and he makes goals. For somebody | :20:47. | :20:53.
that young, he is destined for the top, no doubt about it. When he is | :20:53. | :20:59.
not short of confidence, he is well aware that football stardom may not | :20:59. | :21:03.
come to him this season. Last year I was not even on the team, I was | :21:03. | :21:08.
on the bench. They didn't -- that did not help me keep my fitness a | :21:08. | :21:16.
poor show what I can do. I think I have shown that I have progressed. | :21:16. | :21:23.
-- Life fitness up or show what I can do. He is the best player Crewe | :21:23. | :21:27.
have got at the moment and I hope they keep him. I think he might go | :21:27. | :21:32.
at the season. If he goes to the Premiership club he will be setting | :21:32. | :21:39.
on the bench at best. -- sitting on the bench. Here he is getting a | :21:39. | :21:43.
regular experience in the league and good luck to him. I hope he | :21:43. | :21:50.
stays. We are looking at Nick Powell. How do you assess a guy of | :21:50. | :21:55.
his age and what will make him a great player? You have to look at a | :21:55. | :21:59.
lot of things. You have to look at his temperament. You have to look | :21:59. | :22:05.
at his ability, is he a team player? Is he fearless? I think | :22:05. | :22:10.
that is one thing that people will look at. I think they take all of | :22:10. | :22:17.
those things into consideration. has got to earn the right to play. | :22:17. | :22:22.
He has been left out in periods of times when he got sent out at | :22:22. | :22:26.
Shrewsbury. He was very petulant and he missed a lot of games after | :22:26. | :22:30.
that. It was not a lesson but it was something he needed to land and | :22:30. | :22:38.
he has made on from it. He is showing a majority. -- he needed to | :22:38. | :22:48.
:22:48. | :22:50. | ||
learn and he has learned from it. Dagenham and Redbridge did not | :22:50. | :22:57.
listen. It was up to Greg Pearce sent to even things up on his debut. | :22:57. | :23:02.
The nightmare than in the second half for visitors keeper Chris | :23:02. | :23:12.
Lewinton. He failed to clear a back-pass. They continued to push | :23:12. | :23:22.
:23:22. | :23:25. | ||
on. Nick Powell stepped up into the limelight and completed the rout. | :23:25. | :23:31.
Once we got the third goal, I felt comfortable after that. Make, just | :23:32. | :23:38.
as they were announcing man of the match, I was more than pleased for | :23:38. | :23:44.
him. I am pleased with him. A nice little cameo at the end, Bryony | :23:44. | :23:54.
:23:54. | :23:55. | ||
Balen. He has got better ago at the end Andy. What do you make of him? | :23:55. | :24:00.
He likes to take people on and he has a fearless streak that you like | :24:01. | :24:07.
to see in players. I detected a touch of impatience in his | :24:07. | :24:13.
interview. Is that what you want? He said he did not want to be on | :24:13. | :24:18.
the bench again. You want people to be confident in their own ability | :24:18. | :24:22.
but there is a fine line that you are too over-confident and too | :24:22. | :24:26.
cocky. I am sure that Steve will keep him in check on that but it | :24:26. | :24:32.
was a good finish. The keeper came out pretty quick and just lifted it | :24:32. | :24:37.
over and he got man of the match as well, which I am not sure he was a | :24:37. | :24:45.
man of the match. The other goal we should have got man of the match. | :24:45. | :24:50.
He could not have the crate of beer because he was only 17. Did you | :24:50. | :24:56.
step in? Let's talk about Tranmere. How do | :24:56. | :25:01.
you keep someone like that under wraps? There is nothing you can do | :25:01. | :25:07.
when the Scouts are about. longer he can play at Crewe the | :25:07. | :25:12.
longer he will develop. I think he thinks he should be playing for | :25:12. | :25:18.
Arsenal now. I think he is confident. If that is the case and | :25:18. | :25:26.
someone was to nibble at him, would that kind of player be drawn up by | :25:26. | :25:33.
the glamour? Yes, they are always tempted by the big clubs. You're | :25:33. | :25:40.
always going to be tempted. path to Crewe is well worn for | :25:40. | :25:45.
Scouts. What is it about that club? Get them young. You go there and | :25:45. | :25:53.
see how they work and they look after the lads there. Andy, just | :25:53. | :25:58.
for the record, is he going to make it as a top line pro in the Premier | :25:58. | :26:04.
League? I thinking it is a little bit too early to say definitely -- | :26:04. | :26:13.
I think it is. If he keeps on going, yes. That when has done a world of | :26:13. | :26:23.
good for the table. Morecambe has had a IMAX performance and look at | :26:23. | :26:30.
their standing at the table. -- had a maximum performance. Derby had to | :26:30. | :26:35.
settle for a point. They had to better their chances. There was a | :26:35. | :26:39.
fabulous cross from Jay Rodriguez bat was headed over in the first | :26:39. | :26:49.
:26:49. | :26:49. | ||
half. Frank Fielding botched the next try in the second half. | :26:49. | :26:55.
created the better chances. The game was probably influenced by the | :26:55. | :27:00.
weather. Derby made it difficult for us. In the end we had to take | :27:00. | :27:06.
the point. It was a positive. have a look at Blackpool. A | :27:06. | :27:13.
dramatic win at home to Crystal Palace. Was this a penalty? Yes, it | :27:13. | :27:18.
was. He was a distance away from it. You would be disappointed if you | :27:18. | :27:24.
did not get it. And what about this for her determination from Gary | :27:24. | :27:31.
Taylor Fletcher? That is a great touch and a really good finish. He | :27:31. | :27:38.
had no chance with that one. Kevin Phillips and Chris Basham combine | :27:38. | :27:46.
here. He was there, wasn't he? triple substitution did the | :27:46. | :27:52.
business for Ian Holloway. You need 8p -- bench that is strong and you | :27:52. | :27:56.
need people that can go on there and make a difference. Kevin and | :27:57. | :28:04.
Elliott to that. They were shouting at me about being brilliant | :28:04. | :28:09.
professionals. That is what you need on your squash. Those three | :28:09. | :28:14.
points have ignited Blackpool's play-off push. Burnley are still | :28:14. | :28:20.
just three points off the top six. That is it for tonight. Many thanks | :28:20. | :28:30.
:28:30. | :28:30. | ||
to last and Andy. We will be back next week. Stay tuned for all of it | :28:30. | :28:39.
