With their chairman stepping down, could Burnley be the next North | :00:02. | :00:05.
West club to be taken over by foreign owners? Welcome to Late | :00:05. | :00:15.
:00:15. | :00:28. | ||
Also tonight. Been there only interview together, burly chairman | :00:28. | :00:34.
Barry Kilby and his wife talk about his cancer, the club and the kind | :00:34. | :00:39.
of successor he does not want. A touch of frost at Tranmere - the | :00:39. | :00:45.
story of the dreaded pitch inspection. Holding back the years, | :00:45. | :00:53.
reuniting to likely lads on the Isle of Man. Also... Just what was | :00:53. | :00:56.
the answer that had the Morecambe team in stitches? Stay tuned for | :00:56. | :01:02.
another cracking One On One. With us in the studio tonight, the | :01:02. | :01:05.
Chairman of Macclesfield Town, Mike Rance, and the man in charge of our | :01:05. | :01:08.
top performing League One team, Bury boss Richie Barker. Welcome, | :01:08. | :01:14.
gentlemen. More in a moment. First, he's been at the helm of his | :01:14. | :01:17.
hometown club for 13 years, guided them through financial peril and | :01:17. | :01:19.
eventually into the Premier League. But last week, Burnley chairman | :01:19. | :01:28.
Barry Kilby announced he was stepping down for health reasons. | :01:28. | :01:34.
Barry and his wife enjoyed -- agreed to one interview after the | :01:34. | :01:38.
state he will leave the club then and his concerns. That interview | :01:38. | :01:44.
was for Late Kick Off. I started by asking Sonia about his cancer. | :01:44. | :01:49.
is a dreadful patient. We do not do sickness. As Alastair Campbell said. | :01:50. | :01:54.
We do not like being treated any differently so life goes on | :01:54. | :02:01.
normally. Did it cross your mind to try and battle on while fighting? | :02:01. | :02:06.
Yes, because it is a massive wrench after being somewhere for 30 years | :02:06. | :02:11.
and being chairman. But looking at this dinner cold light of day, it | :02:12. | :02:18.
is the right decision. You are staying on as a director. How | :02:18. | :02:28.
important is that? I want to keep my connection, and I can do. Yes, I | :02:28. | :02:33.
will not walk away. How do you feel about that, Sonia? There are family | :02:33. | :02:37.
barriers and professional barriers, is there a danger he would just be | :02:37. | :02:42.
as attentive with the club has ever? That will not change but we | :02:42. | :02:46.
have always done this as a family, we have been to all of the matches | :02:46. | :02:53.
as a unit and my sons, as often as possible and the other kids. People | :02:53. | :02:58.
know that I am tears to protective but this is his absolute love and | :02:58. | :03:02.
it has been a tough 13 years, long at times, but we have thoroughly | :03:02. | :03:07.
enjoyed it. There have been remarkable stories and some | :03:07. | :03:11.
headlines about television and messages from the fans. What do you | :03:11. | :03:18.
both make of that? I have been overwhelmed, it has been touching | :03:18. | :03:26.
so many people, they have got in touch, people from back over those | :03:26. | :03:31.
13 years and also the Burnley fans, which has been overwhelming. It is | :03:32. | :03:37.
quite humbling, really. I have been very moved. We had a few tears this | :03:38. | :03:42.
week because the message boards have been tremendous and people | :03:42. | :03:45.
within that football fraternity have been amazing, people who have | :03:45. | :03:53.
moved on, it has been a very emotional. Or on the day you step | :03:54. | :04:02.
down, where is the club financially? We aren't decent shape. | :04:02. | :04:08.
We are negotiating and we have the parachute money that will run out | :04:08. | :04:13.
and you have to think of the contracts and as to what you will | :04:13. | :04:19.
do but we are in good shape, we'll have no external debt and we have | :04:19. | :04:25.
good directors. They can support the club. And you're a successor? | :04:25. | :04:32.
We don't want names, but what kind of qualities does he have to have | :04:32. | :04:37.
and where might you come from? Someone in the wings? We need | :04:37. | :04:44.
somebody to buy shares to do that. The current board, the five of us, | :04:44. | :04:48.
four other directors and what happens in practice is the | :04:48. | :04:54.
directors of the company elect the chairman. There will be five of us | :04:54. | :04:58.
at the end of me and I would think the chairman will emerge from the | :04:58. | :05:02.
other four directors that are already here. Someone from outside, | :05:03. | :05:08.
they would have to be a shareholder of a certain size and come from the | :05:08. | :05:15.
outside. Outside is an interesting word. Outside, elsewhere, has led | :05:15. | :05:21.
to problems but they are not fans of Burnley. The big chains that I | :05:21. | :05:26.
have seen have been in 13 years is the influx of foreign owners. Only | :05:26. | :05:35.
eight teams in the Championship who do not have English honours. People | :05:36. | :05:41.
coming from the outside, totally alien to the place, that has been | :05:41. | :05:47.
the big change. And that has happened in football. I don't think | :05:47. | :05:53.
there many Russians are Arabs, to Burnley! If someone came sniffing | :05:53. | :05:57.
from Russia or the Middle East, would you use your shares to | :05:57. | :06:02.
caution against that? You only have to look at clubs where people have | :06:03. | :06:08.
had to look at buying back and things going wrong and it's easy to | :06:08. | :06:12.
walk away and leave a big mess. If that did happen, we would be really | :06:13. | :06:22.
careful. But it is up to the shareholders. We have over 2000 | :06:22. | :06:26.
shareholders. It is a real community club. Has been chairman | :06:26. | :06:33.
in hamster lives or has it been a trial? I would not swap this for | :06:33. | :06:39.
anything. The emotional roller- coaster, you deal with that, it | :06:39. | :06:42.
becomes like an addictive drug because it is in your blood and it | :06:42. | :06:48.
does dominate your life. I cannot think of anything better, I was 49 | :06:48. | :06:53.
became here. I had sold my business and I really cannot think of | :06:53. | :07:00.
anything better to carry on her life with. 13 years coming to an | :07:00. | :07:06.
end, what has been the high point? Promotions, Cup finals, they're | :07:06. | :07:13.
easy, but for me, stepping down, it is the knowledge that Burnley is a | :07:13. | :07:17.
championship team now. We are gripped with bigger provincial | :07:17. | :07:23.
cities. We are natural bedfellows, rather than the lower leagues which | :07:23. | :07:28.
he seems to be destined for forever. It isn't spectacular but that is | :07:28. | :07:32.
the high. Everybody at Late Kick Off which is Barry very well for | :07:32. | :07:39.
the future. Is the role of the chairman undervalued in football? | :07:39. | :07:45.
It isn't necessarily undervalued but understood -- misunderstood. | :07:45. | :07:50.
You have to make difficult decisions and like Barry, if you | :07:50. | :07:54.
have a passion for the club, sometimes those decisions don't | :07:54. | :08:01.
seem to add up for supporters. supporters' have no idea what it is | :08:01. | :08:05.
like to be chairman. Those sleepless nights, worrying about | :08:05. | :08:11.
finances and the performance. is right. It is difficult to get | :08:11. | :08:16.
that message across to people, that ultimately, it has to be a business | :08:16. | :08:20.
to an extent, if not more than a business. You have to make sure | :08:20. | :08:27.
that the numbers add up each week. And that sometimes is a challenge. | :08:27. | :08:34.
Why do you do it? My wife asks me that all the time! I love it. I | :08:34. | :08:39.
love the game, I have a real passion. It is one way we you can | :08:39. | :08:43.
make a difference to the local community. Briefly, what about the | :08:43. | :08:48.
players? I they aware of what happens at the board level? Does it | :08:48. | :08:52.
matter or will they just carry on? I do not think they are aware of it | :08:52. | :08:57.
but when something like this comes out, it will hit the players hard | :08:57. | :09:02.
but when I moved into management, you attend board meetings and meet | :09:02. | :09:05.
the chairman and you realise how much work goes in. The thank you | :09:05. | :09:10.
both very much. The Kilbys were on the south coast at the weekend for | :09:10. | :09:12.
Burnley's match with Southampton. But Sarah Mulkerrins starts her | :09:12. | :09:19.
Championship roundup on the Fylde coast with Blackpool. Unbeaten in | :09:19. | :09:23.
2012 and placed in 4th in the table, Blackpool were looking to continue | :09:23. | :09:26.
this promotion clash against Portsmouth on Saturday. Just before | :09:26. | :09:33.
the break, the form book was upset to put the visitors ahead. | :09:33. | :09:39.
Blackpool persevered with a late challenge against Stephen Crainey. | :09:39. | :09:45.
The shot curled and beautifully to give Blackpool the home draw. | :09:45. | :09:49.
Burney travelled to Southampton for the second best away form and the | :09:49. | :09:54.
Championship but that form eluded them on Saturday. Eight minutes | :09:54. | :09:58.
afterwards, this cross from Southampton soon found Adam Lallana | :09:58. | :10:03.
and he headed the Somme. Then something the Clarets will want to | :10:03. | :10:10.
forget. This scrappy goal credited to Billy Sharp. Not a great day out | :10:10. | :10:13.
on the south coast for any high's Burnley. A disappointing weekend | :10:14. | :10:16.
for our Championship teams, then. Let's see how it has affected their | :10:17. | :10:20.
promotion chances. Blackpool remain in the playoff places but Burnley | :10:20. | :10:26.
have lost ground on the top six and are now five points off the pace. | :10:26. | :10:28.
Without a win in 13, Tranmere Rovers were desperate for | :10:28. | :10:31.
Saturday's game against Preston to go ahead. But even though they had | :10:31. | :10:35.
the covers on at Prenton Park since last Tuesday, the game was still in | :10:35. | :10:37.
doubt on Saturday morning because of last week's freezing weather. | :10:37. | :10:40.
Andy Johnson was there as the referee made the decision as to | :10:40. | :10:45.
whether the game could go ahead. Prenton Park, Saturday morning. No | :10:45. | :10:53.
visible sign of frost but parts of the pitch are causing concern. | :10:53. | :10:58.
have got to areas on the touchlines and it is strange because on one | :10:58. | :11:02.
step it is soft on born on the next it is very hard so we have decided | :11:02. | :11:08.
to have another look at 11 am. We will save there is any improvement | :11:08. | :11:14.
and if so, we might get the game on. Said and put it, it is a waiting | :11:14. | :11:20.
game? That was the one decision we did not want to have to make. We | :11:21. | :11:27.
wanted yes or no. That is the way it is, I can see why he has done | :11:27. | :11:34.
this. He desperately want the game to go ahead? The boys are excited, | :11:34. | :11:38.
they want to come back from that disappointing result last week. | :11:38. | :11:43.
They have been really up for this all week. An hour later and it's | :11:43. | :11:49.
decision time. It last week at Scunthorpe the entire pitch was | :11:49. | :11:58.
frozen. This area, that seems to be getting better. No difference here. | :11:58. | :12:06.
No change. With that element of doubt, we might play safe and the | :12:06. | :12:10.
sensible decision is to call this off. OK? Preston were due to travel | :12:10. | :12:17.
at 11.30am half so calls have to be made. Disappointment all round. We | :12:17. | :12:22.
have worked hard all week. We had the covers on since Monday. | :12:22. | :12:27.
Temperatures at midweek have beaten us. Down to around minus five | :12:27. | :12:34.
degrees. The frost covers only work to around minus four degrees. We | :12:34. | :12:37.
had the slight increase in temperature during the week. What | :12:37. | :12:43.
this has beaten us in the end. We would need another three degrees. | :12:43. | :12:49.
Key 80% of the pitch is playable but those two frozen parts near the | :12:49. | :12:52.
touchline mean the game has to be called off and it isn't just | :12:52. | :12:57.
frustrating for players, managers and fans what it's about money. | :12:57. | :13:02.
This costs clubs like Tran mere delay. We it is costly, as well as | :13:02. | :13:07.
financially, it is frustrating. Because of the weather, we always | :13:07. | :13:14.
anticipate that this could be the case. It was one of those cases | :13:14. | :13:18.
where on the catering side, that is a big loss, we spoke to the chef | :13:18. | :13:25.
and said, we will look at menus that we can possibly key next week. | :13:25. | :13:29.
On that side, we have done well. The programme is always difficult | :13:29. | :13:34.
so we had to go to print. We will look to rearrange this within the | :13:34. | :13:39.
next couple of weeks. More from Les on the pressures on him a moment | :13:39. | :13:49.
:13:49. | :13:52. | ||
but you must be able to identify It is a real problem. The earlier | :13:52. | :13:54.
you call it the better it is because you can plan things behind | :13:54. | :14:00.
the scenes. If it is a late call it is very different -- difficult. | :14:00. | :14:03.
do you cope preparing your team if you know it it will probably be | :14:03. | :14:10.
off? He would rather say there is no chance, then you can organise | :14:10. | :14:13.
training, the players know when they will be in or off. But when it | :14:14. | :14:18.
gets back late you have prepared on a Friday for the game to go ahead, | :14:18. | :14:23.
when the game is off, where you go from there? Q What already prepared | :14:23. | :14:27.
to, it is a fairly easy day, and then you have had three or four | :14:27. | :14:32.
days off. Preparations generally are going well. Your season is | :14:32. | :14:38.
swimming along. It was up until the frost came along. To be sitting | :14:38. | :14:48.
:14:48. | :14:56. | ||
The start of the season, just come up, if I had said February, it you | :14:56. | :15:06.
:15:06. | :15:10. | ||
To be sitting 10th or 11th now, above some of the teams we are | :15:10. | :15:15.
above, way beyond what we expected. What has happened this season? Have | :15:16. | :15:19.
the players come up a stage and realise they can hold their own? | :15:19. | :15:23.
That took a while to stop most of our -- most of our players hadn't | :15:23. | :15:28.
played in League One for a while. It was a matter of convincing them | :15:28. | :15:32.
they were good enough to play at that level. Obviously we have lost | :15:32. | :15:38.
four, sold four, but he was a matter through September where we | :15:38. | :15:41.
had a difficult time but it was about that self-belief, working and | :15:41. | :15:45.
letting them believe they could succeed. Losing Ryan Lowe must have | :15:45. | :15:49.
been a challenge. When we told him he had scored seven in seven. The | :15:49. | :15:53.
top scorer in the whole of the Football League. For a club of | :15:54. | :15:58.
outside to lose a player like that was a big blow. Bash away size. He | :15:58. | :16:07.
took some replacing. Andy bishop stepped up. You have hinted at the | :16:07. | :16:11.
expectation, people will be saying why can't we do the play-offs? | :16:11. | :16:17.
have had some letters where play- offs are not only hope for, they | :16:17. | :16:23.
are expected. A good place to be. Fantastic. We would rather be where | :16:23. | :16:29.
we are than sitting third, 4th, 5th from bottom but we have got to get | :16:29. | :16:32.
from 50 points. If we get there from end -- from then onwards we | :16:32. | :16:39.
will see where we are. Bottom club at home coming up? It might not | :16:39. | :16:44.
mean anything. With the pressing game off Les Parry missed the | :16:44. | :16:50.
chance to improve on Tranmere's run. Andy Johnson asked him if he was | :16:50. | :16:59.
feeling the heat. I suppose I am. No good kidding you are not. You | :16:59. | :17:04.
start worrying about games a little bit more then you would do, killing | :17:04. | :17:08.
of your tracks a little bit more than you did do before. -- going | :17:08. | :17:15.
over. I don't feel pressure for my job. But when I go, which they will | :17:15. | :17:23.
go, whether tomorrow or three years, we don't know, I will shrug my | :17:23. | :17:26.
shoulders and say thank you very much, I have done my best. I don't | :17:26. | :17:32.
think anybody could have done any better. That will be it. At the | :17:32. | :17:37.
moment it is not a worry about my own position. It is a worry about | :17:37. | :17:43.
the club. I hold it dear to my heart. The margins for success and | :17:44. | :17:48.
failure are so small. 12 points away from the play-off places, | :17:48. | :17:52.
seven from the drop zone. A few results either way make a big | :17:52. | :17:59.
difference. Yes. And within those games it is a thin line. Last week | :17:59. | :18:03.
we thought we had equalised in the 92nd minute, the linesman decided | :18:04. | :18:10.
to give it offside. We showed it to the lads on Monday. Half the squad | :18:10. | :18:17.
said yes, half said it wasn't. That is how close it was. We are on the | :18:17. | :18:20.
back of 52-One defeats on the posts away from home and the last three | :18:20. | :18:29.
we have been leading -- 5, 2-1 defeat. Tran where are away to | :18:29. | :18:33.
Carlisle tomorrow night. -- Tranmere. The only other game to | :18:33. | :18:38.
get -- team to get a game at the weekend was more come. They were | :18:38. | :18:43.
inches from taking the lead when Phil Jevons lifted the ball past | :18:43. | :18:48.
the home keeper. Rovers went ahead in the second half. Lee Brown with | :18:48. | :18:55.
a final touch. They doubled their lead from the spot after Danny | :18:55. | :19:00.
Carlton. The Shrimps got back into the game three minutes from time. | :19:00. | :19:07.
The substitute Neil Eid and a point at the death but this was Sue Brian | :19:07. | :19:17.
:19:17. | :19:25. | ||
On to Macclesfield, not a very healthy lead position, what is the | :19:25. | :19:29.
mood like? I think it is still positive. We | :19:29. | :19:34.
have a great cup run. That has got in a way of our league performances. | :19:34. | :19:39.
We have had a really seriously rash of injuries but we are playing | :19:39. | :19:42.
Morgan tomorrow, fingers crossed. was going to talk about the | :19:42. | :19:47.
injuries, perhaps the weather has come to your aid, given them the | :19:47. | :19:52.
chance to recover. The ones that are fit, difficult to train in | :19:52. | :19:55.
these conditions so you lose a bit as well. | :19:55. | :20:01.
You mentioned your cup run, but the league run, what do you say as | :20:01. | :20:06.
chairman to Gary Simpson? How do you operate? We talk a lot. There | :20:06. | :20:15.
is never a day I don't talk to him. You are not tempted to pick his | :20:15. | :20:21.
team for him? I do but he ignores me. He knows we have got to get the | :20:21. | :20:24.
show back on the road and get some points on the board, hope filly | :20:24. | :20:29.
tomorrow night. We alluded to it earlier round, at the stresses of | :20:29. | :20:34.
being a chairman. What is the strain of running a club like | :20:34. | :20:40.
Macclesfield? Substantial in many ways. Particularly if you're | :20:40. | :20:45.
drifting downwards. Great to be in the top half and looking upwards. | :20:45. | :20:48.
We were there not long before Christmas and that makes things | :20:48. | :20:53.
easier. I wouldn't relish another relegation battle and neither would | :20:53. | :21:01.
Gary. Used to play for Macclesfield. Have they got the ability to haul | :21:01. | :21:06.
themselves up the table? They have got some young players, obviously | :21:06. | :21:10.
the size of the club they have had a good record recently of bringing | :21:10. | :21:14.
young players through and moving them on. I don't think there is | :21:14. | :21:18.
anything in it. Obviously bigger clubs in League Two now. Outside | :21:18. | :21:21.
the top three or four they have got a real chance of getting Bacup | :21:21. | :21:27.
there. I must ask you about the new ground. | :21:27. | :21:32.
We are making progress. I was talking to one of the key members | :21:32. | :21:36.
of the Cabinet on Cheshire East this morning. We are still a way | :21:36. | :21:41.
away from making it happen but the town once the stadium and the | :21:41. | :21:45.
council has been supportive. Just to give the fans some level of hope, | :21:45. | :21:53.
five years, 10 years, two years? Not as short as to, hopefully not | :21:53. | :21:57.
as long as five, definitely not as long as 10. | :21:57. | :22:00.
Anybody who saw last week's programme will never forget that a | :22:00. | :22:06.
baby swan is called a cygnet, or a duck if you play for Crewe. It is | :22:06. | :22:16.
:22:16. | :22:30. | ||
the turn of more come to take on Who won the men's 200 metres at the | :22:30. | :22:40.
:22:40. | :22:50. | ||
Beijing Olympics? Usain Bolt. What It spread! -- it is bread! What is | :22:50. | :23:00.
:23:00. | :23:22. | ||
What is the capital of a Australia? Melbourne. Sydney. Brisbane. Perth. | :23:22. | :23:32.
:23:32. | :23:32. | ||
I am sure it is Melbourne. I should know this. Canberra. I knew that. | :23:32. | :23:42.
:23:42. | :24:05. | ||
Hearse. It is called a fall. -- foal. | :24:05. | :24:13.
Another one next week. Rick old men in the early 90s, the hold of the | :24:13. | :24:17.
leak. Which is topped it was finding the net. While Andy crops | :24:17. | :24:22.
up on the sofa, what happened to Rick? He moved to the Isle of Man | :24:23. | :24:25.
and his in the physio business and popped across to relive the good | :24:25. | :24:34.
old days. The one thing we all want is a winner's medal. It meant | :24:34. | :24:38.
everything to actually be successful. You hate that | :24:38. | :24:48.
:24:48. | :24:52. | ||
On a Friday, remember we used to bring the biscuits in. It became a | :24:52. | :24:59.
big competition. See who would bring in the most sweet. Somebody | :24:59. | :25:04.
brought fruit in. That was ridiculous. That turned into a | :25:04. | :25:09.
freak throwing competition. It did. I remembered Joe coming in, it was | :25:09. | :25:15.
in full flow, bananas and apples and everything. You had just thrown | :25:15. | :25:21.
one right into the corner near the door. As it hit the wall Joe had | :25:21. | :25:31.
:25:31. | :25:33. | ||
just opened... He just turned and walked out. He did you really think | :25:33. | :25:37.
was the Golden nugget in that team that got promotion? The best player | :25:37. | :25:46.
we had to who should have played for England was Ian Marshall. | :25:46. | :25:53.
chips it up, Marshall! The X Aberdonian has hit a beautiful goal. | :25:53. | :26:00.
-- ever Tony in. Never got the credit he deserved. Didn't get the | :26:00. | :26:06.
England caps he deserved. I didn't, you don't know. A lot of players | :26:06. | :26:11.
were playing for England and they were not as good. Every week we | :26:11. | :26:16.
used to destroy them in the Premier League or First Division. I knew we | :26:16. | :26:22.
had England nationals in that squad that went. Marshall, to me, was the | :26:22. | :26:32.
:26:32. | :26:35. | ||
best all-round player. He had I used to love the Rover's old | :26:35. | :26:42.
ground, the smell, the surroundings. Kicking the beggars outside the | :26:42. | :26:52.
:26:52. | :26:58. | ||
dressing rooms, it was that small. How many years now? 16th year, this. | :26:58. | :27:05.
That hiatus they used caused at Barnsley. I visited to and fro. | :27:06. | :27:13.
thought of retiring? You are joking, I have got three kids. He doesn't | :27:13. | :27:23.
:27:23. | :27:26. | ||
quite have the pace. Or does he? A bit short, Richie! Andy Ritchie. | :27:26. | :27:29.
The best thing about being a professional footballer, wake up in | :27:29. | :27:35.
the morning, have breakfast, down to train, what a privilege. It is a | :27:35. | :27:38.
short career, you have got to make the most of it. People don't | :27:38. | :27:42.
appreciate how difficult it is when you come out of it to get on with | :27:42. | :27:47.
the rest of your life. It might be a distinguished career but it ends | :27:47. | :27:50.
up extinguished and you have got to do something else. That is really | :27:50. | :27:57.
difficult. Good stuff. Can't help noticing how | :27:57. | :28:00.
many of his anecdotes revolve around feet. | :28:00. | :28:04.
We may have had precious little football at the weekend but all our | :28:04. | :28:14.

boss but Richard's and will remain in charge at Rotherham. All | :28:22. | :28:30.
coverage on your BBC local radio Thank you very much to my guest. | :28:30. | :28:36.
Good luck against Chesterfield, it you are at Morecambe. We are always | :28:36. | :28:40. |
