Good to see you, chaps. Thank you for having it. Always best to start | :00:06. | :00:16.
:00:16. | :00:26. | ||
with a handshake, isn't it? Welcome Portsmouth announced their | :00:26. | :00:31.
intention to go into administration. A special report. | :00:31. | :00:39.
X marks the spot. All the goals from all the gains. | :00:39. | :00:44.
And hands up who wants to waive the handshake could buy? You give us | :00:44. | :00:50.
your verdict. -- goodbye. And we have the story of how one family's | :00:50. | :00:52.
lottery windfall saved Torquay. Which is what Portsmouth need in | :00:52. | :00:55.
their sorry plight. And it's why Carl Faulds is here in the studio. | :00:55. | :00:58.
Carl's a bankruptcy expert who has followed the Portsmouth saga | :00:58. | :01:01.
throughout. He will tell us exactly what it means with the news this | :01:01. | :01:04.
evening that Portsmouth are applying to go into administration. | :01:04. | :01:07.
$$NEWLINE, First I've been looking at how Pompey have got in to this | :01:07. | :01:17.
position again. In 20th October 10, Chainrai became | :01:17. | :01:23.
a confessed owner of Portsmouth. He had loaned the club 70 million a | :01:23. | :01:26.
year before and he had taken Fratton Park as security on the | :01:26. | :01:29.
loan. Protecting the investment was his | :01:29. | :01:34.
priority, but I asked him at the time if he was the right owner. | :01:34. | :01:41.
Have the right man? No, no, no. I'm just the man running the club right | :01:41. | :01:47.
now. We're going to find the right man. The club is back on its feet. | :01:47. | :01:54.
Icy light and I see a lot of hope. -- I see light. | :01:54. | :02:01.
Chainrai found new owners. The company agreed to buy the club in | :02:01. | :02:06.
the summer of 2011. Pompey was their first for a into football | :02:06. | :02:11.
ownership. They were backed by a Russian who passed the Football | :02:11. | :02:16.
League's owners and directors test, but his business had been subject | :02:16. | :02:22.
to scrutiny by the Financial Services Authority. He had also | :02:22. | :02:25.
been accused of money laundering. He has always denied the | :02:25. | :02:30.
allegations. In the only television interview he conducted as chairman, | :02:30. | :02:34.
I asked him about these matters and he mounted a stern defence of his | :02:34. | :02:43.
activities. With the passing of the tests, we | :02:43. | :02:48.
then had difficulties. We had a dialogue with the authorities. I | :02:48. | :02:57.
have never seemed a more restrictive -- never seen a more | :02:57. | :03:02.
restrictive regulator. But just weeks after this interview, | :03:02. | :03:07.
the bank was placed into administration. He was accused of | :03:07. | :03:13.
asset stripping. He was arrested and remains on bail pending | :03:13. | :03:19.
extradition hearings. But he protests his innocence. | :03:19. | :03:24.
Portsmouth's ultimate owner was soon placed in administration. It | :03:24. | :03:30.
also at -- emerged that Chainrai still had security on Fratton Park. | :03:30. | :03:36.
He was still owed his 17 million. Anybody wanting to buy the club | :03:36. | :03:41.
would have to address his debt and indeed deal with former owner | :03:41. | :03:46.
Gaydamak, who owns the land around the ground. With wages unpaid and's | :03:46. | :03:52.
in crisis so soon after their 2010 administration, even the Prime | :03:52. | :03:55.
Minister was asked to comment. Will the Prime Minister and his | :03:55. | :04:00.
voice to mind in calling for HM RC to meet with the club so it could | :04:00. | :04:06.
the taxes it is owed, that our clubs advise and that the fans have | :04:06. | :04:10.
the chance to become its owners? I will certainly do that and she is | :04:10. | :04:15.
right to raise the issue. Knowing one or two Pompey fans, I can | :04:15. | :04:18.
understand that the possibility of them supporting Southampton his | :04:18. | :04:23.
incredible. Once again, matters were brought to | :04:23. | :04:30.
a head by a winding-up petition. The perennial crisis club is back | :04:30. | :04:35.
on familiar ground. Let's get Carl's thoughts. Nearer | :04:35. | :04:40.
to safety or nearer to going bust? My personal view is nearer to | :04:40. | :04:44.
safety, mainly because the administrators' parity is going to | :04:44. | :04:52.
be to sell the club and keep it as a going concern. I think the | :04:52. | :04:55.
administration has got to be the right thing. | :04:55. | :05:01.
You are on the creditors committee. You are representing people like | :05:01. | :05:08.
forests, taxi-drivers, people running small sons. Also, there's | :05:08. | :05:12.
large creditors. What does it mean for the likes of Chainrai? | :05:12. | :05:16.
Chainrai has got security over the clubs are he will be paid first. | :05:16. | :05:21.
The other creditors are unsecured. They will be at the back of the | :05:21. | :05:27.
pile. It does not come down to who is going to pay enough money to | :05:27. | :05:33.
clear not just Mr Chainrai... There's going to be a lot of money | :05:33. | :05:39.
lost the second time around. There's a feeling that it is down | :05:39. | :05:43.
to Mr Chainrai. Is he still in the box? | :05:43. | :05:49.
Yes, he has priority. He gets paid first. If there's no buyer, he may | :05:49. | :05:56.
have to take a shortfall. Let's take the role of a -- and | :05:56. | :06:01.
administrator. Who are they working for? The people who are owed money? | :06:01. | :06:08.
Or are they just recouping money for the taxman? The administrator's | :06:08. | :06:12.
job is to get the best value for the business. In that case it is | :06:12. | :06:15.
going to be Mr Chainrai first, but then the other creditors come into | :06:15. | :06:20.
the frame. He has got to get the best price. | :06:20. | :06:27.
A last point - we have not seen a club of Portsmouth's size go bust. | :06:27. | :06:32.
Board would be the ramifications? It would be a shock wave. | :06:32. | :06:37.
Portsmouth is the biggest club in this situation for some time. It | :06:37. | :06:42.
depends on whether there's another buyout of there. It is all about | :06:42. | :06:48.
the big money now in football. Thank you for talking to us and | :06:48. | :06:52.
explaining all that. Meanwhile there is something to | :06:52. | :06:55.
cheer on the pitch for Pompey fans - a hard-earned point at Blackpool. | :06:55. | :07:05.
:07:05. | :07:15. | ||
shot. -- picked his shot. They may be down and out financially, but | :07:15. | :07:24.
that was a million dollars. Is it Matthew Phillips? He has bent | :07:24. | :07:28.
Is it Matthew Phillips? He has bent it in. It is Blackpool one, | :07:28. | :07:32.
Portsmouth one. Leroy and Murts are with me. Pompey | :07:32. | :07:41.
are staring at a 10-point deduction. It is not something they have seen | :07:41. | :07:47.
before. The players have trouble with a smaller squad, but they have | :07:47. | :07:52.
shown good spirit. In a relegation fight now, though, | :07:52. | :07:58.
Leroy? Certainly. The manager has handled it superbly. He has got the | :07:59. | :08:04.
best out of the players. Can we keep the players motivated? | :08:04. | :08:11.
They have not been paid for ages. A lot of that comes from within. It | :08:11. | :08:16.
is going to be difficult. There's lots of games coming up. He is | :08:16. | :08:21.
going to have to rotate the squad. Spirit, together this - that is | :08:21. | :08:28.
what you need now. Portsmouth hoping against hope that | :08:28. | :08:31.
a very kind benefactor appears from somewhere, which is just what | :08:31. | :08:34.
happened at Torquay not so long ago. Because, still to come: | :08:34. | :08:37.
The best seats in the house. How the Gulls plan to remember lottery | :08:37. | :08:40.
winner and club saviour Paul Bristow after his untimely death. | :08:40. | :08:45.
And loads more action from all the leagues. | :08:45. | :08:48.
So let's begin our look back at the weekend's action. Graeme and Leroy, | :08:48. | :08:58.
:08:58. | :09:08. | ||
since mid-January. A very accomplished finish. We have | :09:08. | :09:11.
seen is a few times and we still cannot understand what the | :09:11. | :09:21.
:09:21. | :09:28. | ||
substitute, people used to say, make a name for yourself. I didn't, | :09:29. | :09:38.
:09:39. | :09:50. | ||
but he did. Leeds equalised but were left ecstatic. | :09:50. | :09:58.
Reading have nine wins out of the last 12 league games. That was a | :09:58. | :10:08.
:10:08. | :10:15. | ||
great way to celebrate a new Bristol City. They were two down in | :10:15. | :10:23.
the first quarter of an hour. It was all over after an hour. Hull | :10:24. | :10:33.
:10:34. | :10:34. | ||
Southampton keep up the pressure on Southampton keep up the pressure on | :10:34. | :10:36.
West Ham and could go top if they beat them tomorrow. Reading and | :10:36. | :10:39.
Brighton are neck and neck, just a point outside the play-offs. | :10:39. | :10:42.
At the bottom, Bristol City are edging closer to the drop zone and | :10:42. | :10:52.
:10:52. | :10:54. | ||
Let's talk about Bristol City. A defeat for them. Tough? | :10:54. | :11:01.
They went down without a fight. They will be disappointed with the | :11:01. | :11:07.
three goals. They have not scored in five out of the last six games. | :11:07. | :11:14.
They just need to find some spirit from somewhere. Against Hull, they | :11:14. | :11:20.
were not good enough. Southampton are almost on a roll. | :11:20. | :11:24.
They have promotion in their sights. A good time to go on a run, isn't | :11:24. | :11:31.
it? They have brought in Billy shop. We will give him the goal. -- B | :11:31. | :11:41.
:11:41. | :11:46. | ||
Is this his goal? I would give it to the keeper, to be honest! He | :11:46. | :11:55.
meant it. All strikers claim them. Some great stuff from the Reading | :11:55. | :12:01.
keeper at the weekend. This save is world class. How he | :12:01. | :12:06.
gets a hand on that to get it over the bar, I don't know. We should | :12:06. | :12:10.
raise about him because he is a topknot keeper for start exciting | :12:10. | :12:18.
times for Reading fans. -- top notch keeper. Exciting times | :12:18. | :12:23.
for Reading fans. Right now be raised for League Two | :12:23. | :12:30.
honours as -- has become exciting. Torquay 15 in a row before Saturday | :12:30. | :12:35.
and their progress was marked at the weekend. Martin Ling got his | :12:35. | :12:40.
hands on the Manager of the Month award. On the field they made it | :12:40. | :12:50.
:12:50. | :12:52. | ||
Two fantastic goals. It was about one of -- about time one of my | :12:53. | :12:57.
free-kicks when Tim. Fair play to the lads. Hopefully this is the | :12:57. | :13:04.
start of our season. It was a tough game last week so for them to | :13:04. | :13:08.
bounce back in the way they have his credit to the players. A good | :13:08. | :13:18.
:13:18. | :13:21. | ||
Nigel Pearson, smiling. Midlands attention was on the bottom of the | :13:21. | :13:24.
championship where Nottingham Forest and Coventry urgently needed | :13:24. | :13:34.
:13:34. | :14:05. | ||
There was a sombre mood at the The fans know that, the players | :14:05. | :14:08.
know that and the manager know that. They have to work within the budget | :14:08. | :14:12.
and get on with it. With that attitude, you can achieve anything. | :14:12. | :14:17.
We are not finished. Later on, we will remember Torquay's saviour but | :14:17. | :14:22.
right now let's catch up with the lead to action. He will start with | :14:22. | :14:27.
another improving team, Bristol Rovers. | :14:27. | :14:35.
Another win for Bristol. Rovers enjoyed a good bit of good fortune | :14:35. | :14:45.
:14:45. | :14:52. | ||
I'm sure he has had his leg pulled before but never his arm. If you | :14:52. | :14:58.
want a penalties taken, the only man to step up and put it away is | :14:58. | :15:01.
Scott McGleish. Emphatic! Morecambe did come on and getting a | :15:01. | :15:06.
goal. Only a consolation relief. And what about the effect of having | :15:06. | :15:12.
a new manager? Great stuff for Bristol Rovers. | :15:12. | :15:16.
Lots of games postponed in League Two. Cheltenham started off at | :15:16. | :15:21.
Hereford knowing a point would get them back to the top. | :15:21. | :15:26.
They came from behind against Hereford. Only two defeats in the | :15:26. | :15:32.
last 14 League Matthews -- matches. Looking good. | :15:32. | :15:36.
At the top, set themselves -- beaten Gillingham this evening to | :15:36. | :15:40.
go above Cheltenham but only on goal difference. Torquay, Crawley | :15:40. | :15:45.
and Swindon not only separated by three points. Oxford are seven. | :15:45. | :15:52.
Things are looking a lot better for Bristol Rovers. Mark McGhee is | :15:52. | :15:57.
having a good impact. You've got to give credit to shorn of north as | :15:57. | :16:04.
well. The Rovers' supporters are delighted that quarter experienced | :16:04. | :16:08.
manager. I said this was a big game for them. If they win this game, | :16:08. | :16:16.
they can start looking up and that is the case now. If they keep | :16:17. | :16:21.
playing with this resilience, I don't see why not. When you give | :16:21. | :16:28.
Mark McGhee bread-and-butter jobs.... He has proved successful. | :16:28. | :16:31.
He brings solidity and experience. The players have responded | :16:31. | :16:40.
magnificently. In his gloves of time now. Extra | :16:40. | :16:44.
time. Each week we debate a topic against the clock. Last week it was | :16:44. | :16:48.
the rights and wrongs of players play acting to get the opposition | :16:48. | :16:53.
sent off. It got you going on Twitter and Facebook. Nathan has | :16:53. | :16:59.
treated, he agrees with James on simulation. It is not right to see | :16:59. | :17:04.
justice perverted by Defra. says it is giving a bad message to | :17:04. | :17:12.
young players to tell your employers to die. John said anybody | :17:12. | :17:17.
caught diving or play acting should be bound for four matches. On our | :17:17. | :17:23.
Facebook Page, James says, plays -- players can get in trouble for a | :17:23. | :17:26.
really bad tackles of the Football League to do -- should do the same | :17:27. | :17:32.
to those who died. Steve says he is amazed that you | :17:32. | :17:38.
are backing the cheats. QC managers blame the referee for dyes. Pot, | :17:38. | :17:47.
cattle and black come to mind. Harvey says, is all part of | :17:47. | :17:56.
football now. Shoot them all, I say. This week, the topic is the hand | :17:56. | :18:02.
shake. Before every game, Kiefer, who run the world football, make it | :18:02. | :18:06.
compulsory for teams to shake hands. All power teamster is but in the | :18:06. | :18:16.
:18:16. | :18:20. | ||
Premier League it has caused so much problem this week. 90 seconds | :18:20. | :18:27.
on the clock. Is it symbolism gone mad? Is it fair play celebrated? Of | :18:27. | :18:37.
Fifa or meddling? Who is about to make the best case? I hated it as a | :18:37. | :18:42.
player. A understand the symbolism and trying to make respect a big | :18:42. | :18:46.
thing but I want to get out onto the pitch and get on with it. I'm | :18:46. | :18:50.
not to respect your or anyone but to win the game. That's the key | :18:50. | :18:54.
thing. I'm for fish handshake. It's about showing respect for the game | :18:54. | :18:58.
and showing respect that it is a game and people are watching to see | :18:58. | :19:04.
that everybody is going to play in the right spirit. As professionals, | :19:04. | :19:08.
you get on and you do it in the right way. Wouldn't they do it | :19:08. | :19:18.
:19:18. | :19:19. | ||
after what? I agree. The referees are playing... We are trying to | :19:19. | :19:23.
educate young players. We needed to teach them to win and lose with | :19:23. | :19:33.
:19:33. | :19:34. | ||
dignity. It is important you do it before the game. You have the mass | :19:34. | :19:39.
Scots in your hand and you show that respect is important. It's a | :19:39. | :19:42.
global game and everybody has watch a. It could be just a gimmick | :19:42. | :19:48.
before the game. Wouldn't we let teams express themselves further. | :19:48. | :19:58.
:19:58. | :20:00. | ||
They could do a new Zealand All Blacks hacker. That says we want | :20:00. | :20:10.
:20:10. | :20:11. | ||
war. That is the final whistle. Well done, good debate. I'm not | :20:11. | :20:14.
sure he won that well. The debate continues. A small moment of | :20:14. | :20:19.
history as we celebrated a double first. Exeter fans enjoy it. Here | :20:19. | :20:29.
:20:29. | :20:30. | ||
hard for promotion and they took the lead against Exeter. They | :20:30. | :20:36.
struck back really well. The great heart and not a little quality. A | :20:36. | :20:40.
fantastic free kick by Billy Jones. David Noble took to it because he | :20:40. | :20:49.
did it from even further out with more quality. Bournemouth were on | :20:49. | :20:53.
the road at Hartlepool and not a good pitch for them but it didn't | :20:53. | :20:58.
bother them a match. Away from home and just one defeat in the last 13 | :20:58. | :21:03.
it now. Looking good for the play- offs. It highlighted before Wigan's | :21:03. | :21:08.
main problem, their defensive record. They have let in 38 goals | :21:08. | :21:13.
this season. They have only one clean sheet in their last 21 league | :21:13. | :21:23.
:21:23. | :21:23. | ||
matches. Fierce shot would deflect wide if you had any luck and not | :21:23. | :21:28.
into your top right-hand corner. Keep going, guys. A tough breaker | :21:28. | :21:38.
:21:38. | :21:49. | ||
for Wycombe Wanderers. Let's look A great result for Exeter but on | :21:49. | :21:54.
Bournemouth, such an active month, January, brought some big players | :21:54. | :21:58.
in. Spending money and seaming that they are moving on. They are the | :21:58. | :22:02.
dark horses. People think spending money is a positive but it also | :22:02. | :22:07.
adds pressure to the club. All the eyes on a warm Baumber. That got to | :22:07. | :22:12.
deal with that. There is an excellent young manager there who | :22:12. | :22:18.
has grown into the job. Anybody who is looking at that is thinking we | :22:18. | :22:25.
do not want to get Bournemouth. Hartley Paul's pictures not good. | :22:25. | :22:28.
Neil Cooper said he was delighted to get a draw. He thought | :22:28. | :22:32.
Bournemouth were strong. Exeter, what a result for them at the | :22:32. | :22:40.
weekend. Two wonderful free kicks, some social. This one is absolutely | :22:40. | :22:44.
brilliant. He has worked at a cross and the keeper thinks it's going | :22:44. | :22:47.
wide but that is wonderful technique. The whip and the power | :22:47. | :22:52.
he got on it... If they were talking about Ronaldo or really, | :22:52. | :22:56.
that would be on for goal of the month. He has always been a quality | :22:56. | :23:06.
:23:06. | :23:06. | ||
player. Top class. Wycombe and Yeovil side by side at the bottom. | :23:06. | :23:16.
:23:16. | :23:16. | ||
Prognosis? Wycombe have not so long were bottom-of-the-table. They are | :23:16. | :23:20.
going to be inconsistent. Courage Johnson has gone in there now. | :23:20. | :23:23.
Although it got to do is finish in the places they are in it now. I'm | :23:23. | :23:28.
not going to try and pull the wool over people's eyes. They are doing | :23:28. | :23:33.
well when they are. You know what tomorrow is, for a Super Tuesday of | :23:33. | :23:39.
football. We have got some big games. Let's look at the | :23:39. | :23:43.
championship. What is going to be happening on Valentine's Day? A a | :23:44. | :23:53.
:23:54. | :23:55. | ||
Millwall, derby against Reading, Portsmouth against Ipswich and West | :23:55. | :24:05.
:24:05. | :24:08. | ||
To goods sets of supporters and two teams that have been at the top of | :24:08. | :24:18.
:24:18. | :24:21. | ||
the league form the majority of the months. It's swings and roundabouts. | :24:21. | :24:27.
It going to be a cracking game. The supporters should enjoy it. Two | :24:27. | :24:30.
really good football clubs. And sure they will get under tender on | :24:30. | :24:39.
It's going to be entertaining. Nigel will go there and want to | :24:39. | :24:48.
play. 7-are going to go there and try and win the game. -- | :24:48. | :24:52.
Southampton. Brighton's former since the beginning of the year, | :24:52. | :24:57.
unbeaten. Another one to watch coming up on the rails. They play | :24:57. | :25:04.
lovely football. There are moving forward and are looking more | :25:04. | :25:08.
resilient, more steely and they have a little bit of luck as well. | :25:09. | :25:18.
:25:19. | :25:24. | ||
Wycombe against Yeovil is a massive game. This isn't about the three | :25:24. | :25:28.
points, it's about who comes out with confidence. You've got to win | :25:28. | :25:33.
your home games. In it lead to, I particularly like the encounter | :25:33. | :25:42.
between Swindon and Crawley. -- in the League Two. It will be | :25:42. | :25:49.
interesting in the dug-outs. would want to be the 4th official | :25:49. | :25:54.
for that one? Important home games for Aldershot, Oxford and Torquay. | :25:55. | :25:59.
Before we go, it is that took Torquay where a new stand is going | :25:59. | :26:03.
up at a rapid rate and we have a question for you. But Portsmouth | :26:03. | :26:06.
teetering on the brink, how much money would you give to save your | :26:06. | :26:09.
club if you won the lottery? At Torquay, that is exactly what has | :26:09. | :26:13.
happened. Now a stand is being erected in honour of the club's | :26:13. | :26:17.
white knight. It will be called Bristow his bench | :26:17. | :26:22.
as a lasting memorial to Paul Bristow who died 20 months ago. The | :26:22. | :26:26.
lottery winner plaid a lot of that fortune into securing talkies | :26:26. | :26:33.
future. Sad and happy. Sad because it means Paul is not around. Happy | :26:33. | :26:38.
because it is happening. It is something that Paul, I think, would | :26:39. | :26:46.
have been very proud of. Fear says it took only minutes to decide with | :26:46. | :26:53.
Paul to spend their fortune on a team they loved. It was something | :26:53. | :26:58.
that we both enjoyed together so well thought I'm going to go on to | :26:58. | :27:05.
the board. Am going to enjoy it. And I do, it's lovely. This | :27:05. | :27:09.
salutory footnote to this story, all of the 50 million in winnings | :27:09. | :27:17.
wouldn't pay of former Portsmouth chairman's debt. A You Win the | :27:17. | :27:24.
Lottery, what would you do? He will never see me again! -- you will | :27:25. | :27:34.
:27:35. | :27:36. | ||
never see me. I am out of you. would have a community thing. | :27:36. | :27:40.
Talking about a talking, a small club, a core of support and | :27:40. | :27:45.
something that is going to last them generations. Talking about | :27:45. | :27:50.
billionaires coming into the big clubs, the history of Torquay, you | :27:50. | :27:54.
never ever think anyone is going to come to their rescue. It is so sad | :27:54. | :27:58.
that palled passed away but his widow wants to take it on and she | :27:58. | :28:01.
really enjoys it. That is what football is about, the small people | :28:01. | :28:05.
who love their football clubs. would like to know what you might | :28:05. | :28:10.
