clubs is getting desperate, and one of the prime reasons for that, is

players wages. 50 years ago, though, the problem was quite the opposite.

Back then a strict wage cap meant no footballer was allowed to earn

more than �20 a week. Until, in 1961, one player, Jimmy Hill,

changed all that. As boss of the players union, he led his fellow

professionals in a threatened strike action, that finally

overthrew the clubs, a cosy cartel. For many years Jimmy's been a

Sussex resident, and half a century on from his triumph, he looked back

with Andy Steggall. You spoke of giving the club's one more chance.

Is the one more chance a price -- a player's strike? If the thing isn't

resolved, they will withdraw their It is a time when Castro has

built the war. And England's footballers are preaching rebellion

thanks to the chairman of the P FA. Back then he played hard and

meeting? I feel very happy at this moment and every fan is feeling

happy with me. Do you feel you have achieved all you have been fighting

for? Not all, I do not think we would have settled it if we

achieved everything. But I think we have achieved more or less the

things that will benefit football which is the important thing.

do you think about the money professional footballers are making

now? Well, they are lucky. We owe Jimmy Hill a fair deal of gratitude.

One thing that struck me was training with no forkfuls during

the week. What was the reason? thought they would be more hungry

for the football on the weekend. All the level would be a but a

desperate for the ball. Amazing. Everybody owes him a debt of

gratitude but he revolutionised prospects for a footballer. Jimmy

is an extraordinary man, a forward- thinking man. He had all the

players doing in media training and he was the first man to think of a

lot of things. We will revisit the whole wage cap business later on in

This week, in the light of the financial problems around, and

inspired by that talk of Jimmy Hill's battle before, we ask is it

time to turn the clocks back and RE-IMPOSE a wage cap. 60 seconds on

the clock. Leroy to back a wage cap. Go. There should be. In terms of

the income they get, 6% of their income so the clubs do not go into

administration and players know there is a maximum wage at the club

and they will be happy with that. Do not punish the players for

chronic mismanagement. You will see a scenario where the bigger clubs

get bigger and pay whatever it takes with him that to get a lead

core of the best players in the world and then they will stop it

with young kids that will cost them nothing in the grand scheme of

things. The better clubs with the better people in charge of find a

way to do it and the gap will get bigger. The money people have to

make sure they do not do that. The supporters will be punished because

tonight against promotion rivals Southend, and we'll see that

shortly, but they were also in action on Saturday, hoping to let
