Day 7 Masters Snooker Extra

Hello there. And welcome to the last of our snooker extra

programmes in this year's BCG Masters tournament. The first of

our semifinals was, on paper, a cracking match, between two left-

handers and two of the most attacking players in the game right

now. Bristol's audacious potter Judd Trump and Australia's former

world champion, Neil Robertson. There is a bit of history between

these two men. This is the third on the trot in which they have faced

one another at key opponents. So far, Judd has held the upper hand,

winning last April, and at the semifinal of the UK Championship,

of course an event he went on to win. So, Robertson out to extract a

measure of revenge today. It was a Still needs one more red. This blue

and two blacks, he's right back in Good hit.

value in potting the red unless you He needs to get position on the

black if he's gonna play any site trying to pot.

We see certain shots and say they deserve to win a frame, but this is

Well, it was a long-drawn-out affair, which took nearly 36

minutes. But that won't bother Neil Neil breaking off. It looks like

I think it was more... I don't think Neil Robertson wants to make

it into that kind of match, it's not his style. But he's probably

Just the reds a little bit thick, on the indeed of that bunch, go

through the slight gap. Five reds, 2004, I remember it well, when he

first played here. I think he got he heldcard. He played Jimmy

White in his first-round match. Well, to say he was a bit raw those

has he improved in those seven years that have passed.

A little bit of pressure on that safety from Judd. And just cut it a

I don't care who you are, you never really relax until you get that

first frame on the scoreboard. A quick glance at the scoreboard

now. Probably a little bit straiter than he would have liked. It's --

straighter than he would have liked. It's OK. 2 points, the lead. A red

Just nudge the end. Don't have to play too much pace. Decided just to

make certain he got on this red. I'm surprised he didn't play a

little cannon there, just to nudge a few reds into the open. He will

need a good angle on the colour now Yeah, played to get low in the

black there, because, as Ken showed us so well, it's quite a flat pack,

so he didn't want to be high. He's got enough power to get this,

though. He just plays it so easily, but he

pushes that cue through and gets Almost like two golfers and one

hits the ball 50 yards past the other one - it's a huge advantage.

That didn't go in the middle of the pocket. I am wondering whether he's

on the red and he intended to be on here. There's a red at the bottom

of that main bunch. He's not run down the table far enough. Well,

he's looking at the possibility of a plant, but it looks like a dead

set. But look at the gap between the two reds. You could play it,

because you would be taking the cue Easy enough safety. Should he want

to play it. But he's desperate to keep this break going. But this

plant it difficult. Yeah. He wants And that, I would say, he got away

-- and that, I would say, he got away with it. He was fortunate

The top red in the middle of the table is definitely possible to the

left corner. I think he may consider playing it, if he could

avoid getting into another ball. But, of course, the danger ball for

Neil is the one that's on to the But the problem is when you do that,

you lose the cue ball. Tried to make it into a shot for nothing. As

you see, he didn't get anywhere near the pot. And the cue ball ran

loose, and a nice easy starter for Judd.

The only danger Neil's got in this match is being drawn into a potting

game. And I think that was slightly risky there. He's 3-1 up.

Not that his best positional shots, that. He's a good shot on this

has only cost him one point. And the way the balls are situated, one

good positional shot here and this The easiest red, obviously, is the

one to the right middle. But it's all about trying to get position on

Obviously the only problem red is Neil's a left-hander. Have to use

the rest for this shot. I don't think he plays right-handed,

John. I have never seen him play right-handed shots. No, I don't

It came very straight on the black there. As you say, coming straight

on the balls, it just restricts your positional side of it.

And he didn't get the good angle on the red. And he's not the right

He's almost strait. So he can't get closer than the next intended red -

- he's almost straight. So he can't get close to the next intended red.

This blue will make the points all So he pots, but once again a little

bit straighter than he would have A wrestle on this red. It's all

right. He caught it, funnily enough. Yeah. It wasn't a clean pot. That's

why the white had to go past that red. That's why he struggled to get

on this red. Bad contact there. That's unlucky. There's not many

things more irritating than that when you're playing snooker.

Yeah, a straightforward pot. Just needed a good angle on the black.

Once again he's gone a lot straighter. But this time, because

the cue ball's that much nearer the side cushion, it makes this pot

difficult. And he's got to do a bit with the cue ball, which it looks

contact. Another chance to get this frame. And what a big frame it's

was game ball, he should have hit that a bit more smooth. That's

Don't get me wrong, that was a tough shot and he was very close to

think that kicks happen when you don't strike the ball as well as

you would like. Some kicks happen that you can't help it, but I think

most of the time it's because you just haven't struck the ball as

cleanly as you like. You see it so many times, don't you? Particularly

on power shots, you see the cue ball bouncing even before it gets

to the red, or, in that case, the Is he on the pink? He needs to be.

Might just be able to bend it. But I think he can pot the pink.

No. Its spot still occupied. So, on the black spot. That will suit Neil,

getting a little bit edgy in that break. A couple of shots he didn't

hit hard enough or pot the balls clean enough.

Well, kept in the bump of the middle pocket is never a good thing.

Doesn't look as though he's gonna tempt Judd in to pot. So Neil

Robertson a little bit fortunate He's having a close look at this,

but he's kernel not on the pocket. Just playing safe.

-- but he's certainly not on the Much too thick. Much, much too

thick. That's the problem when you play side. He played that with

left-hand side. It's a little bit harder than necessity and the side

just pushed into the red. An easy I think that figure-eight shot in

terms of opening the reds up, getting them into the open, but, as

you say, this was the right shot, an attacking safety. Just cut it a

fraction thicker than he would have liked. Didn't reach the baulk, the

So it's Neil Robertson, he pushes on, and he's just one frame away

those first two frames. And sometimes, as you know, Steven, you

play the match and don't feel as though you ever got involved in it,

for some reason. And Judd may be thinking that. He shoots well short

of the target. And even going that line, it's not

But what we have seen this afternoon is, well, a good match-

player Neil Robertson is. He's taken every opportunity. If it's

gone a bit scrappy, he's made the most of it. Yeah, he's a fantastic

competitor. From his first appearance in 2004,

his all-around game is one of the I don't know what happened there.

Put a little bit of unintentional side on the cue ball, which jacked

it up. Nice easy starter for Judd. But

he's not made the best start with that position shot.

And just looking at his Creeks -- and just looking at his reaction,

mystified. As I was saying, not the best positional shot of the opening

He's played that nicely. I think he's just about on the black. Just

I think he's certainly capable of producing a run of frames.

Absolutely. I mean, we could be back to 5-5 in half an hour if he

got his skates on. That last shot a little bit

careless. Has he got a slight angle on this

blue? He needs one. Maybe just able to force it in, and get the cue

Inexplicable, how he missed that. With a a-1 lead, he knows he will

get -- with a 5-1 lead, he knows he will get another chance. He will be

thinking he does. It might just spur Judd Trump on, this. You know,

you see a little bit of weakness in your opponent.

If you don't take the first chance to win a match, it's amazing, you

don't seem to get another chance as Quick glance at the scoreboard. 37

This pink would put him 44 points in front, with 43 remaining.

So that mistake from Neil Robertson looks as though it's cost him this

The red's not there. Unexpected from Neil Robertson. Judd will take

anything he can get tom. Still got a mountain to climb, though,

it. Looks slightly awkward cuing, with the greens across the white.
