Day 2 Masters Snooker Extra

Hello again. On Snooker Extra tonight from Alexandra Palace, it's

an England/Scotland match-up. Judd Trump against Stephen Maguire. They

met at exactly the same point last year. Maguire won the day 6-4. He

has a healthy record against his fellow UK champion, Trump. So what

would happen today. Let's find out today.

It's Judd Trump who gets this first frame under way with a pretty good

length with the break off shot. No value in having a go at that red

because the black is tied up at the moment. And I know that Pete Godwin,

the table fitter, did have a look at the table possibly drifting off. You

saw Shaun Murphy did that. Just a slight adjustment, but very little

wrong with the table. I think that the players were just getting a

little bit of side on it and the tables, this cloth in particular is

so lively. And the fact that they're shaven as well, the clothes. They're

taken right down. There's virtually no nap on them at all and they're

very slippy and any unwanted side is exaggerated. A fascinating match,

this. Wouldn't be too many players with such a good record against

Judd, but Stephen Maguire has one. But he looked like he was coming in

to good form at the UK, Stephen Maguire, but unfortunately he ran in

to the juggernaut that was Robinson. He had to sit in his chair for the

rest of the afternoon. The Australian was truly brilliant that

day. Sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say, "Well done!"

Well, that is a possible plant, but it's a bit risky. Wouldn't know what

was happening in the cue ball. I'm just wondering with how he

played the safety like that and hasn't hit the yellow, he may have

left Stephen Maguire to do this because there is a path back. It's

just slightly off but it can definitely be made and if Stephen

Maguire can make the cue ball in to the baulk area without hitting the

can, he will be taking it on. -- hitting the cannon, he will be

taking it on. Kiss on the brown. He put everything

in to the plant and wasn't quite sure what was going to happen to the

cue ball. That's what he was looking at and he was just playing the first

red to the right of the pocket. That's how you size the plant up and

he couldn't hit it any better. Yes, one of those situations where Judd

is probably wishing that he took it on now. I know he didn't have the

natural position back in to the baulk area for safety, unfortunately

for him, the safety plant was still there.

A bit of an angle on the red. It all develops on that. It's not going to

be too straight forward but the red in the middle of the three there,

that's not a good angle to knock the other red out of the way.

I can understand that. He was just trying to pinch it well there. If he

didn't get that absolutely flush, he was going to get a cannon with that

cue ball coming back and he just tried to pinch a little bit to the

left-hand side of the pocket as we look, and because of that, he missed

it. I mean the cue power that Judd has

is incredible. Look where the white has finished up there. OK, he used

another ball when he screwed back, but he hardly hit that and look

where the white has finished up. Watch the white. The screw takes

effect and the reverse side. Effortless for him to screw back. As

he's proved again there with this shot with the reverse side. He's

certainly got some shots from his armour, this boy. Yeah, he's just

slightly struggling for the perfect position at the moment. Once again,

a little bit short, but the blue off the spot isn't a hindrance. He can

drop it in. There's a red next to the pink available. He's got a

choice of reds. Once again, not totally ideal with the cue ball so

close to the cushion. Good shot that. A lot better than it

looked. He would love to get that red that's

closest to the black spot out of the way. He can get position there and

get on the black back on-the-spot and it will become a lot easier for

him. And that was beautifully played. Good shot that, Dennis,

wasn't it? First frame on a table like this. Ds a good indication of

how well you are cueing and... Oh, that seemed to kick. He's still on

the blue and he would want to be getting on the red that you

mentioned, John, but let's have a look at this. Yeah, just jumped

slightly. But he still can take the blue in the corner and get on the

red that John mentioned. APPLAUSE

That was one of the funny situations where it actually worked out all

right. OK, it would have been there to the other side and would have had

an easier shot, but when it left him the angle, it was a natural to come

back down. But good shot all the same. If anything, too good.

best of fives. Went to beat Mark Williams. Ronnie O'Sullivan won his

group and Judd Trump was the second person to get through. So he's in

good form. Yeah, I think Ronnie reached a milestone - 800 century

breaks in his career. That's quite incredible.

He's overtaken Stephen Hendry's record by over 50

He's overtaken Stephen Hendry's had a flick off and was looking from

behind, but I think that he can get through. Yeah, just played that with

a little trace of side there, just to flick the red

Not bad. It's OK. Well, I think it's OK. Well, he may have to

But I think it's an angle that he can just stun nicely over behind the

black. All depends. If he can't hold it directly, he'll

have to come off two cushions, but we'll see shortly. A little bit of

noise just in the arena there. Quickly disappeared. Oh, it's back

again! It's gone. Now, can he play that little shot I mentioned, or

does he have to use a couple of cushions? He could hold it.

APPLAUSE He hit it nicely. Slightly better

shots than they look when you have to put the cue ention tension on the

end of the cue. It just changes the weight and sometimes you don't get

the shot right. But well judged. And he looks in fine form and taking

these very well. Wasn't an easy start at the break slightly out of

position, but since then, it's been very good indeed. I think he's

finished rather straight on the black here which means he's got a

little bit more to do, as you can see there. Just slightly off.

that he would get nicely on a red and he's just at the stage where a

couple more pots and he's won the opening frame with one visit.

That's all he could do. Requires that shot and trying to put the pink

on to the side cushion. that shot and trying to put the pink

obviously five reds in the open, this frame is rife for the

counterclearance and trying to get the ball safe which he did there, or

nearly did with the pink. Well, he did have a go at the plant

there. It was quite a tough one and I think this red near the pink spot

passes the one over the pocket that you can clearly see there. But still

needs accurate cueing. Where is the red going? Where is the other red

heading up the table going? That's more important. And he's a little

bit fortunate because it looks to be absolutely dead straight. Had that

red have come off the cushion, John, a couple of inches, he had a great

chance to make a counterattack. He's been very fortunate there that he's

left this straight. Quite a way off with that pot. Only mid-range. Just

don't see what Stephen Maguire can do with this.

Well, he played that well. APPLAUSE

That was far from easy. Hooked that beautifully. Obviously had a little

bit more angle than we thought, but nevertheless, still played very

well. And I mentioned this frame was rife for a counterclearance. Here's

the shot that Stephen played. Punched it in with a little bit of

side. Let's see if he can make that counterclearance, because with the

exception of the pink, they're all there.

He's actually got a chance here. If he screwed off the black, he could

play on the cushion and flick the pink out to the middle of the tanl

here. He'd still be on the red below the pink, so there's a chance to get

the red below the pink here. Yeah, played exactly as you

predicted, John it's put the pink certainly in a better position. It's

still not ideal, as you'd see the cannon here. He was looking to hit

it full ball and it would have gone right out in to the middle of the

table. This would be some frame to pinch

because Judd Trump looked odds object to take it with one visit

until he got out of position on a straight black.

All I will say is if the rest of the matches are like this first frame.

Although Stephen Maguire won't be too enamored with that shot. Left

himself hampered by the ball. Love to have that one again. Now with the

spider as we show you where the white finished, this is tough.

He's got very little to do there. He's just using the ball there, he's

so close to the blue there. That was a super shot there. It really is. I

mean, just to roll it in would have been a good shot, but to play it

like this and come off two cushions with a spider. Ten out of ten for

that one. Adser you said, the way that the

match started, we could be in for an absolute cracker this afternoon. No

surprise that he was slightly underhit there. The one thing that

he didn't want to do was go close to the red there. Slightly undercut

there. Go for a ball colour would be my advice - make it easier. One of

those frames that will really hurt the opponent, this. The frame that

he should have won. In fairness, he had two chances to win it and lost

position the first time, Judd, and then had the mid-range red which you

would expect them to pot and it was a big pocket there. But he didn't do

it. And will Stephen Maguire's shot off

the black to move the pink out in to the open be the shot that wins the

frame? He he's just deciding where to put

the cue ball there. He's already two shots ahead. Does he leave it for

the corner for play it for the middle or the opposite corner.

I think he just screwed back about 12 inches and leave it for the

corner. That's what he was cueing up at previously. Now he's having a

little think to see - well, can I leave it to the middle? I think he's

got a little bit too much angle. I think he'd love that cue ball to be

a little bit straighter but he's got to negotiate something else now.

Needs to be spot on and that's not going to be spot on. He's going to

be too close to the pink, is he? Oh, he's finished dead straight on it in

to the corner. He didn't want to be that close to the pink. Slightly

awkward here but the good news is that the cue ball is going towards

the black. So concentrate as hard as you can on knocking the pink in and

you've got to have position. That's not bad. He's got the cue

ball back down the table and I don't think that he's lot a pot on.

Rattling in the jaws there. Absolutely, the jaw is back out in

to open play. There could have been trouble there. He's trying to swerve

it and the swerve hasn't come as much as he would like so he gets it

too thick. much as he would like so he gets it

the shot to nothing much as he would like so he gets it

- well played. Not the worst case either. Yeah, a

little bonus whenever that happens. You know you've just overhit it

slightly as we show you the pot again. Very good pot but the white

could quite easily have slipped past the brown. But the nudge finished

perfect for him. You can't beat a good nudge. And that's not a good

nudge. Well, not ideal but I think that the red goes. Does the red?

Certainly one tight to drop in the middle, but the one that's there

he's closest to does go up past the yellow. So you can't expect him to

negotiate this one. He was playing in to an area there

where he had a choice of reds. And that one looks a bit tight to me

further up the table. He's got the choice of three reds in to the left

corner. Does the black go, Dennis? choice of three reds in to the left

If he runs this through, will the black go in the other corner? Is

that why he's playing it? He would have to play it with a trace of side

black goes, John, as you can see there. He would have loved to

Coming back there. Coming back with loads of pace on it.

Not the best that one. So the black is only available in to one pocket,

as you can clearly see. So he's still got a little bit of work to do

here. He needs to keep on going. Doesn't

want to be dead straight on the blue. He'll have to take the pink if

he's straight on the blue. . Yeah, he's just slightly scrapping for

position here. Just being a little bit off. Slightly off, two or three

shots. Well, our lines showed you that he was almost straight, so he

did well to manufacturer that angle from the blue almost being straight.

A key shot coming up. If he can pot the pink and get on the red in such

a way that he can run through and leave the black for the right

corner, he can really open things up.

Now, what angle has he got? I don't think that he's gone far enough and

it's amazing how that inch or so can make such a difference. Yeah, it

comes down the table just a tiny bit further. Half a ball and it's

perfect. Run that through and you're on the black. You're going to play

the cannon off the black to split the reds up and it's most definitely

a frame-winning opportunity. But just coming short there. Yeah,

you're still in play, but it would have been so much easier. The

referee having to get the pink as near to its own spot on the direct

line behind it. All of the other spots are occupied. Or maybe he can

do? Yeah, he knows he's going to nuch the other red and he thought -

maybe I can just flick it and still get through for the black. But...?

Hmm. That was the problem. He's covered it. Or has he? It doesn't

look as if it goes from here, but maybe he can pot the black? Well, if

he's on that, that's a right result. Because he certainly didn't intend

to get the cannon like that. And that will pot with a bit of side.

And looking the way he's setting up, it will pot straightaway. That's

amazing. I thought that shot before was fraught with danger and I was

thinking that he was going to have to screw out to get on a colour. But

he was on it. If the pink pots at the bottom of

the pack, that could be worth taking on there. A stun here and you pot

the pink and open the four reds up. Just try to leave it slightly low

and she's done. So now it's all about how these split.

We've had three terrific frames. Neither player has clinched it with

one visit. Can he do it here? Yeah, a couple of reds in to play,

but it's still not straight forward. That's an excellent break this, it

really is. He's not been perfect for most of this break, but if he

manages to keep it going, probably have a little bit of luck with the

other cannon that he played. But the rest of it has been just brilliant

hard match play snooker where he's just kept the break going.

Just picking the loose one off here before he decides. He's had a look

at the score board and he's 52 ahead. So he's going to need one of

the difficult five reds gsh the two near the pink, three near the black.

And he's got an angle now. And if he does cannon the pink, just not quite

full ball, he'll bring the two reds in to play. Another quick look at

the score. 53 ahead. Just working out exactly what he needs and if he

pots the blue, 58. And the red 59. He's still going to need one of the

difficult once so he's got to play the cannon here. Yeah, this is a

little trickier than it looks, isn't it. It's not absolutely ideal this.

It's one of these where you can play the cannon and slip off it and leave

the cue ball near the top cushion. So you've got to hope that this goes

right. Well, he had to look to see if the red would go in the middle

pocket, but we'll find out shortly whether it is available. Now he's

played the cannon and how's your luck, Stephen? Could have been

better. Yeah, he decided to play it a lot firmer than I thought. I don't

blame him because it is one of the once that you play it soft and it

could slip off. He took his chances and he wasn't been very fortunate

there. Could certainly have hoped for something better, but that was a

chance that he had to take. Y and yet again, John, we've got

another frame identifical to the previous three ones. Quite amazing

that. Yeah, and all of them fascinating in their own right.

First thing Judd will be doing is trying to get reds off cushions,

which he's managed to do in one shot there. Got two of them off. But...

Has he left Stephen Maguire a chance? Far from easy, of course. We

just get used to seeing these players knock these long pots in all

the time, but these are tough. Well, there's the answer. It's a

chance for a kourpt attack for Judd Trump. -- counterattack for Judd

Trump. And could he somehow steal this fourth frame?

An awful lot put it past him. Yeah, not only did

he leave the red up, he slipped the pink in a lovely spot here as well

because Judd gets the red and the pink is there. Stun it in and red

near the black. And he's just got that red that's going to be on the

top cushion that's going to be a problem, but we saw yesterday

Dennis, on the new clothes and the table being new, that the top

cushion wasn't too bad yesterday, I didn't think. They were sliding in a

little bit. So maybe, it might not be as difficult as it would be

normally. Just making sure that there's enough

for room for the red to pass. And there's no problem there.

Doesn't want to be straight. That's just about perfect. He's well

passed. The position where it would be straight. I'm not sure if the red

that's closest to the black pots in to the left corner. That would be a

bonus because in a couple of shots' time, if that goes, he can pot that

and flick that other one away. We'll find out very shortly if that's

available to him. And there's the pink I

red does go, the pink, well it does as well. The pink was virtually

perfect for... In a perfect world, he would like to leave himself high

on that. Flick that and leave the other red out. I think he's come up

short to do that, John. Yeah, he's come up quite a way short to just

pot that and flick the other one away. This is slightly more

difficult now. Now, that looks to be a pretty good angle but you know,

when you play this cannon, you could do with cannoning in to the middle

of red and black and make sure that he puts this red on. And didn't, he

hit it full ball. He want wanted to play the cannon, didn't he? It's

amazing, the shot two shot to go. He was coming up for the red and all he

had to do was was coming up for the red and all he

that would have been slightly easier. And he just didn't get that

position and consequently, it's gone array.

Surely even Judd wouldn't take that on! A good safety required, you'd

think. It's not straight forward off that

red to the right, because he can't really get in behind the green and

red to the right, because he can't to leave the red safe. Yeah, I think

that the middle pocket is in play as well. That's ideally where

like to be playing. I think if you play off the red, it would have to

be thin and then you wouldn't be getting it safe. I don't blame him

taking a bit of time here because it's not straight forward.

Well, that was a risk. He's put himself bang in trouble now. But it

wasn't a straight forward safety shot, but if

wasn't a straight forward safety this correctly, Judd is in all sorts

of trouble. He'll be snookered. He's got the blue, the pink and the black

to get the snooker behind. Yes, and it might have been good if

it had come off, but that shot Judd played has put himself in a right

load of trouble, and he knows it. Just don't feel as if he should have

played off the Just don't feel as if he should have

side, some way. Because he'll do well to get out of this.

Well, he's got quite a bit of distance between the red and the cue

ball. So that's one good thing. But one good pot here and I don't think

he'll go in to the middle pocket with the cue ball. It will go back

around the table towards the black, if he pots it. If he gets that

angle. It's a bit of a free shot really.

And just the snooker now. It would have been a bonus to have dropped on

the black, but he's so good at that type of shot, Stephen Maguire. The

one that he just knocked in, he really is. Well, he's got a choice

now. Does he just... Black. You've got to make sure that you get a

snooker rather than get a colour safe. Well, he's going to need a

snooker rather than get a colour of good fortune here off the side

cushion and hope that he can knock them safe. The onlying thick is with

that shot he's just played, he's just left him the chance to do it. I

would have thought that he would have tried to get behind it and

block it off. Basically, he didn't make that snooker difficult there,

Stephen. Well, Judd stopped in his tracks there to see if this red will

cut in. The smile tells you that it's a very, very thin one. So it

won't cut in. Well, though it's the best of 11. If

you have a 3-1 lead at the end of it, you're going to be delighted and

he's maybe got a free shot here. Pot the red and miss the yellow and

brown and come back up towards the black. Well, he's cannoned that. He

hit it wrong, that's why he finished up cannoning this. Has he got away

with this? He has. My goodness. He has a run of the balls at times,

doesn't he! Yeah, I think Judd thought, if I hit this right... He

hit it a bit too thin, that's why he finished kaup cannoning the brown

and the yellow. And I thought the shot with the spider earlier was a

cracking shot, but that is even more difficult. And due to the

circumstances, a lot more pressure on it. 2-1 down.

Doesn't have to take it on, of course, but when you see it there,

you think, of course, it's game ball.

Yeah, I think it was more difficult than the previous one, and that was

a good choice there. OK, he only needs the red, as John said there.

To leave Judd needing snookers and it was just too risky because he was

so close to that blue. If he could mills the double kiss here, he could

get Stephen in trouble. And he's just played up and down. He didn't

think that it was possible to do that. So good cue ball.

This is a bit awkward. When you wouldn't risk just rolling and

trying to get a snooker behind the yellow and brown. That could roll

off. Well, he has. He has tried it. No, that was very difficult. He's

put himself in a spot of bother now. Yeah, there's actually a shot here

if Judd wants to move the yellow off the cushion here as well. Well, he

had a few ways of playing it and I think that there was other ways to

do it. Could have hit that a lot firmer and tried to get a snooker

behind ping or black and move the yellow out, but he didn't do it.

Just having a little chat there. I'm not sure what he was saying to him

with the referee. Yes, very dangerous frame here at

the moment for Stephen Maguire. All of the balls are potable if Judd can

get a chance. The yellow has now gone from an unpromising position.

Ea hasn't. This is a chance for Judd Trump. . I don't know whether he can

pot this red without moving the yellow. And he's absolutely loving

to be able to. If he pots this red, he may just have to stun in to the

yellow and hope that he doesn't knock it safe somewhere. But he's

got to get up for a high valued colour, hasn't he? That's the

problem. And I'm struggling to see how he can

get on one here. See, if he was to get a red and a blue, he would only

be able to tie. Look at this shot. He's on the blue.

APPLAUSE Unbelievable cue power. I think,

John, he thought that he was going to clip the yellow as well and get

so much more screw, and he would have come right up towards the pink

and black, believe it or not. But to get there without touching the

yellow was quite amazing. Yeah, he'll be disappointed not to get to

pink and black, and it would have been some shot. But in this

situation, you can still been some shot. But in this

frame on a respotted black if you can get it. I mean, it's difficult

to can get it. I mean, it's difficult

sure that you knock the blue in. It's been a fascinating four frames

here. Midsession interval coming up after this. It's going to be 2-2 or

3-1. We'll know in a few minutes. The longest frame in the

3-1. We'll know in a few minutes. far with just over 28 minutes.

Stephen Maguire has had breaks of 54, 61 and 60. A slightly bigger

target for Judd to aim at now. Blue and green

target for Judd to aim at now. Blue bit too much side on it there, but

there. That could have caused some trouble, but not quite.

Just wondering, well, at first I thought that he might have been able

to get past the brown and hit the yellow from behind, but... Can he do

that? I'd think he's too close to the cushion, isn't he, to get the

amount of side that he would need. But that last shot of Stephen

Maguire was superb, because he's brought the brown in to a better

position. Great finishing up when you play that type of shot. Well, he

had to play it with a lot of side and a little touch of swerve to make

the angle there. You can see that he had to swerve around the black and

that was a terrific escape. Got a couple of chois here. He could

actually go at the pot. But... couple of chois here. He could

he is's tried and... Oh, and the blue has gone in the middle pocket.

Would you believe it. Would you believe it. Free ball. Blue in the

pocket. And if the brown goes past the yellow... Everything is gone

wrong. Can you believe that, Dennis. The

things that happen on a snooker table. I mean the blue in to the

middle pocket is a good shot just to shoot the blue in to the pocket.

Stephen can't help himself from smiling there. So the scenario is

that Stephen Maguire has had breaks of 54, 61, 60 and he's going to be

3-1 behind as we show you that attempted cut. A bit of a risky one.

But how the blue has gone in there! I mean, he got the ultimate there,

Judd. He got absolutely everything that you could hope for. The free

ball, fives points and a pot available. Well, being a

left-hander, the pink is at the wrong side of the table, but Judd is

so good with his right-hand as well. It will be interesting to see

whether he gets the rest out and whether he pots it right-handed, or

does he go 11 behind, so he needs all three colours. Now he's going to

leave it with the rest, so he's got an angle to get over to the black so

one more good shot licence Tricky little pot, though. Not absolutely

certain this. You know, it looks easy on the screen, but we know, you

hit the front jaw on these tables and they don't have it. So there's

still some work to be done. One long straight pot on the black.

And he'll go to the mid-session interval a very happy boy.

(CHEERING) Well, he'll bes absolutely

delighted. It's been a fascinating tussle so far. It's Judd Trump who

leads Stephen Maguire by 3-1 frames. It's been one of those matches where

the scoreline could have read anything. It could have been 3-1 to

Stephen Maguire. It looked odds on that we were going to be two frames

all, but it's 3-1 to the juggernaut. Best of 11 so 3-1 and not all that

bad. Just waiting to see if the red will

pass the blue. Just have a look. That looks tight.

If it doesn't go there, he'll have to take it to the middle. But he

feels that he's got a kick and it still might go in. It was tight but

the kick didn't help. There's a good shot that we can show you of the

angle and you can see the red jumping. Otherwise he could have

potted that. Good shot from Stephen Maguire there

that. So when he played it, to make sure that he didn't make any contact

with the ball colour. That's a shot from Stephen, he was

playing from the left to the right with the bunch of the reds and pinks

there. So he's only going to four points from that chance. And just

got too low in to the cue ball there. That's the level that they're

playing at. He would have considered that a decent opportunity. You don't

get too many at this level. Good shot from Judd, that.

Excellent. He hit that all wrong. He was just

trying to swing that around. It was a tough shot he was attempting there

and he just hit it completely the wrong way. Let me show you it again.

He was trying to swing it around the black of the... It was OK until the

red he played cannoned in to it and spoiled it. Good example, though of

playing a proper safety shot. He played a cracking shot there. Must

have been all sorts of trouble and made it much more difficult for him

to get back and because of that, he's got his opportunity. I think

that's where his game has improved so much over the last couple of

seasons. He's been working on the tactical game. I mean, he's not

going to change the way that he plays the game, but if you can play

that sort of shot that he played and create the chances and then do the

business, it's a very tough format to beat.

You've got to create the chances for yourself, and he certainly did that

with that excellent safety that he played. That's worth another look.

Yeah, lots of running side around the angles and well, he couldn't

have put it in a better spot. So it's been a little prit surprising

why he hasn't won a season last year, because when you thought he

was getting closer all the time to Ronnie O'Sullivan and eventually

beat him in the final and you just waited for him to kick on and that

was confidence that he needed to regularly be at the business end,

but not quite happened for him. But hopefully, here this week, a

Masters. That will kick start him. Well, that certainly opened things

up and if he can get the cannon correctly, let us show you the split

of the reds after potting that one. Ve Lleyton Hewitt

Just got to be a little bit careful here. Just about OK. But it's quite

a thin snake this, and the blue and pink are a little awkward.

They have to concentrate on the baulk colours and he's OK even if he

lands on the brown. I think that he could still get to the green. Just

checking to see if it's touching. He's had a good look at it. And he's

playing this right-handed. He looks pretty good with his opposite hand,

Judd, but he decides - no, I'll make absolutely sure and get the rest up.

Yeah, the funny thing is that it is one of the shots that I see as a

little bit awkward for using the rest. So I don't blame him going

little bit awkward for using the back to play the this right-handed.

He's pretty proficient at it, back to play the this right-handed.

mentioned - I used to hate using the rest. I used to prefer changing

hands. I was OK but only on certain shots. Not like some of the ways

that these boys, they look the same when they switch hands. I think it

was a letter I got from a gentleman from your part of the world once at

the world championship and he said - I love seeing you switching hands.

He said - I'd be give my right arm to be aambidextrous. Had to be from

Liverpool to have a remark like that! So 26, but so disappointed

where that cue ball finished. And you do feel as if it is a

massive frame in the match this. Yes, he know that it is first to six

so 4-1 isn't the end of the world, but it will certainly be far less of

a task if Stephen Maguire can win this frame.

These are really tough shots. It is difficult. I will be surprised if

Judd can get this. It really needs a very delicate touch to get behind

the green here. It is just one of those shots, you don't want to leave

it short and leave yourself in trouble. It looks like Stephen

Maguire can get through to the threat. -- to this red.

Where are the reds going to finish? You've got the good cue ball but you

are never sure what is going to happen when you have to hit it at

that pace. Nicely controlled as well. Played

the cannon onto the pink. Nicely controlled as well. Played

looks like he is getting into the ascendancy. The scoreline will tell

you that, but it doesn't always paint the correct picture. It just

looks like he is starting to monitor a little bit. -- motor.

That has finished very awkwardly. He is looking at the blue now.

Even that jumped up in the end, he had a terrible contact on that. He

would be pleased to see that going. It went in.

If he's straight on the blue, it could be the end of the break. He

will have two look at the more difficult pink. That looks

absolutely dead straight. The pink, to keep the break going. A couple of

reds are available in the right corner if this goes in.

Still not straightforward, just yet. But I am with you, John. It looks as

if he has started to take control of this match, Judd. I think that frame

before the mid-session interval was a big boost to him. It really was.

He is pushing on from there. Just trying to hold the spot there

so he could retain possession, which he has done. The outside red is

possible. I think he can ring the black into

play here if you pops this. If he was dead straight, he would just

roll it in for the pink. Now you can see the angle. He is in pretty good

shape here. Good job he didn't hit it any harder!

It is interesting how he switches hands with the rest. A lot of

players do that, when they use the rest they used their right-hand.

The red needs to fall and it has. 4-1, John. He is starting to look

very good. That frame before the interval was absolutely massive. It

is going to take a big effort from Stephen Maguire but he has been

around long enough to know that if you knuckle down, he is still

involved in the match. But this man is starting to look

very good indeed. It is just sheer, and natural talent

and ability that we are looking at here. He is one of those players

that was born to play the game of Smith. A complete natural. -- play

the game of snooker. Another exhibition shot. Have a look at

this! Have a look at that. APPLAUSE. We call it round the houses. He went

round them twice. And there is another one.

No disrespect to his opponent, he just likes to entertain. You can't

pop them all. But that is a fabulous effort from Judd Trump. Extend his

lead by 4-1. Has he got away with that? I'm not

sure if that red goes into the right corner... No. He has had a result

there. He was playing that long pot in such a way that he ground the

back of the red and hit it too sick. -- thick. We will show it again.

This is a must win frame for Stephen Maguire. 5-1. You would give him

very little chance. He is giving this everything he has got to try to

keep himself in this series. It is not a good chance by any

means. The pink is tied up. The black is a little bit awkward at the

moment. It is far from easy, this. I don't

know whether he can risk It is far from easy, this. I don't

And you do feel if he's going to get back into this match, that is

But he can screw it back. He'd love to win the frame with one

visit. That seems a little message out to Judd but he is far from

finished here. He has got to be a little bit

careful here. That loose red you can see just

below the cluster, it is available. Notice the way he played that stunt

shot there with a little bit offside. -- of side. He is looking

pretty good here. Nice little cannon and he should be on the red to the

left-hand side. We can see that is available now.

Just checking there to see if there is anything available in the middle

pocket. But it doesn't look like it. He needs to get an angle here just

to leave himself... Maybe the bottom one. He is looking at it now. He

doesn't need to play the cannon. He will sink that one up first.

This has been very good. Very good, indeed.

I tell you what, this is the sign of a true champion. 4-1 down, back

against the wall and he is producing this. Fabulous rake builder, Stephen

Maguire. He has made 312 centuries in his career.

This cueball has been hardly out of place during this break. It looks

simple and that is very good. That is exactly how he has made this

break look. Nice little prize of ?10,000 in this

year's masters for the highest break. Mike Allen had a magnificent

137 yesterday. Stuart Bingham, almost making the maximum break when

he broke down on the yellow. No extra prize for the maximum.

No century but I don't think he will be disappointed about that. He is

now just to make behind. -- two behind.

I think he might settle for that. Now that he has missed it, it looked

like he could scatter the red all over the table. He double-kissed the

red and it wasn't the worst outcome, was that?

Not often you get a re- rack after 20 minutes. I did once, many years

ago, with a man who works for the Association here. It was after 40

minutes and we had every rack. It was just the way the frame went.

You would have loved it, John. I don't think you can see enough of

this to take a pot on. Just a safety.

He's been very fortunate there. He didn't play to leave the red behind

the other one. Just checking that there is nothing

that is going to get knocked over the corner pocket.

So in the end, he changes his mind. He played it very well.

He could possibly play the plant with the safety shot in mind. He

thought he would have a safety shot on if he attempted the plant but he

didn't hit it as he intended. The black is tied up, the pink is

tied up. He is on the blue. He could bring the pink, he could bring the

black into play. A key shot coming up.

Needs a bit of luck now. That could have finished better for him. He

couldn't have played it any better. Maybe full on the pink. It was still

a very good effort and a bit unlucky not to have an easier pot than this.

It isn't a particularly appealing angle. Even then, how do you get on

to angle. Even then, how do you get on

on. This is not straightforward. Yes. Very easy to play the shots and

belts the cueball. You have to hit down a little

the pot at an angle. See the way the cueball went into the air there? It

put a little quick one in. That was probably, because he hadn't got that

much room past the red, he just overcooked it.

This is a very big part of this match. After that mistake, he

Stephen Maguire can win the frame from it, it could completely turn

this match around. In the previous frame, he made a

beautiful break. And every chance, he could not quite a few in here. --

knock. Both players lost just a little bit

of rhythm with what happened before the re- rack. 20 minutes of play

where they hardly went for a pot. So you can get out of your rhythm

somewhat. But they are starting to look good again here.

What will encourage him even more is that his opponent is starting to

miss a phew. -- phew. No greater encouragement than that. You playing

well and you're past it -- your opponent missing a couple of balls.

Make that eight out of eight. No need to play any cannons. Those reds

near the pink spot. They are all available because they have cleared

each other. Just come up a little bit short of

where he wanted. Slight change of plan now. He will have two heads up

towards the blue. If he is too far on the blue, he has the pink there

sitting on the Queen spot. So here's OK there.

Brown is the one that will get him to the reds.

He is doing exactly what is required here. His opponent has made a

mistake, Mr a pot he should have gotten. And he is punishing him. --

missed a pot. It looked like he was slipping away. And all of a sudden,

it is back on. The standard has been superb, hasn't

it? Stephen Maguire's had breaks of 92.

Judd has been kept away from the start of the table. He mist a red,

but he has lost a bit of rhythm -- missed. Maguire continues the

comeback. He is now just one behind. Tried to develop things, the pink is

a top shot. -- tough. He just knew he was coming in to rest, thought

maybe he could get it. If he hadn't hit it as hard, he might have been

perfect. It's one of those where there is no easy safety shot. Take

the pink on. He has a shot of the blue, if he wants it. Try and get

the cue ball behind the green and brown. Make sure you miss the

yellow. He has thought long and hard, back looking at the pink now.

I think that will be his choice. Probably better to play it

straightaway, the more you think about it the more difficult it

becomes. Usually the first shot you see is the correct choice. That is

what he's looking at. Needs the correct angle. A bigshot coming up.

nicely! Look where the red has finished. How close was that to

holing both? It took a lot of nerve, but he got it. And now, this

is like a practice routine. Take the black off the spot, just have the

pink. Try and win a frame of the pink --. He hasn't had much table

time. He will have to use all his experience. The chance to make sure

he can get that rhythm back. Has to go for the brown ball. The corner

pocket is not helping the situation. Getting it up fairly quickly. It is

not plain sailing. That wasn't his intended colour, but

he thought he would just drop it in. So far, so good. The one in the

corner is a bit of a problem. Played that nicely. If he is straight on

the one in the middle, he could have it. He could win this frame with

reds and pinks, forget about the black and blue. The great players

have the knack of being kept off the table for long periods, which he has

been, but then responding like this. He deserves everything he gets

for that opening ball. What a fantastic shot. He knew he would

have left these for his opponent if he missed it. Just the ebbs and

flows of a high-profile tournament. He has only played one bad shot in

this one. The pendulum has swung back in Judd's favour.

That is amazing. The bulls are almost identical. They will be

identical in about two shots. It has been a fabulous match. Some frames

where one player would make a 60 break. Had a little bit of

everything in this match. This is a slightly better position. A strong

favourite. One more red would get him over the line. It is now. This

has been a brilliant break. It is not always about making maximums, it

is about making frame winning contributions. Concedes the frame.

That is a terrific performance from Judd Trump after losing three frames

in a row. He came back to win that one and take the lead. Just needs

one more frame to get to the quarter-final, he lost at this stage

last year. Just dropped the red on to the top cushion. Having a look to

see if there are any easy shots available, but I doubt it.

Taking this one home. I think he has been fortunate. There was an easy

safety shot, but he is confident. He knows if he can get one chance, he

could possibly steal the match. Played a pretty good shot, Maguire.

Got the red. A bit of a swerve, he has missed that one completely. The

White did not come back, didn't react. Didn't have enough on it.

Putting him back in from where it finished. Maguire would feel this is

just as tough of a safety shot as the previous attempt. He made the

right choice to let him play it from where it finished. He got what we

call the dreaded double-kiss. Not a good chance. The black and pink are

out of commission. Terrific shot. Can you imagine

trying that with the stuff they used to keep out the side of the table?

The long tackle. They could end in 1970. -- couldn't. You still had the

same hairstyle than. -- then. It is so difficult with the pink and black

out. I don't quite know what he is looking at. Not a brilliant chance,

this. Two reds on the top cushion available for later on if he can get

there. But he is obviously thinking of something. Maybe he thought too

much. Did he feel... He must have thought that the pink... What a poor

shot. It was more a lapse in concentration. That pink looks very

tight. Judd is looking at it. It might look like it goes from there.

It didn't look like it would. I think it goes with the cue ball if

it is a bit lower down the table. We won't know. Not straightforward, the

break. He might be able to get through the gap. Gradually, it is

turning through the gap. Gradually, it is

very difficult the way the walls are situated. That a red on the left is

causing all the trouble. Judd is looking at The reds, if he could get

on it and play a cannon, he could just nudge it out of the way. But

can he get the cue ball down onto the top cushion? -- the. If he lands

on a red, that is unbelievable. He held his hand up to apologise.

Maguire smiling away, that was amazing. That could be a great bit

of good fortune. Dropping on that red. Suddenly the game has opened up

a little bit. You can have all the talent in the world, but nothing

beats a little bit of luck. Just looking to see, if he can get the

pink, will it go into its spot? All the other sports are tied up, it

will have to go directly behind the red.

This will be quite a good shot. What you are going to do with the cue

ball was quite difficult. Always likely to flick of the other red --

off. Purposely left the cue ball short so

he could convert the red. You know your opponent will stick you back in

trouble. A chance to get this red back up the table. A good shot in

the end. I don't think he wanted to get that close. Looking at the

green, slightly in the way. Nestling into the red. He asked just checked

to see if the reds to the right of the black would be available. The

green seems to be slightly in the way. To play that shot, he would

have to get a lot of side on it. He needs to think long and hard about

it. Having to swerve around the green to make this angle. He may

have to have another go at this. The swerve took a bit too soon. I can't

see in other available shot. That is the only available shot I

can see. He has to get the swerve right, it is difficult to judge. Not

sure if he would leave one on or not. Trying to figure out another

escape route, might have to attempt the same shot again you can see that

it is not the angle he wants. A second try coming up. Can he judge

it this time? He did not get the red that he

intended. The pink and black are awkward. He made it look very easy.

It was lovely. He hit it nicely. Where's the cue ball Colling? A long

way away look where the cue ball has finished. Maguire has been raising

his eyebrows. It makes the shot so much more difficult. I think it was

the one before the mid-session interval. Judd stuck the red up, the

white dropped in behind the blue. That was the reason it was 3-1 at

the mid-session. Some great tactical play going on here. There is nothing

else available to them. That is pretty well played. Just came up a

bit short. He can get to the one behind the black. Got to be

careful. I don't know how much he can see. You don't want to be

getting this red cross to the other corner pocket. Played that very

well. Good shot. Another great shot. I am wondering if the pink

goes to the left corner, if he could take it all-in such a way. Play the

safety shot. The problem is the red that is near the right side. He

wouldn't want to cannon into that. Making sure he didn't do that.

Played the safety shot. It is nice to see the big breaks. I think the

crowd enjoy a battle like this one. The tension is at its highest. These

boys are good, and you don't see many missed shots, but it does make

it exciting. The frame is gradually opening up. One mistake could be

very costly. The red closest to that pocket is the one he is looking out.

This is what it looks like from his point of view. Nothing down the

right-hand side. Play a safety shot that is higher up the table. Make

sure it is a good one. No double-kiss. So much so.

mentioned before, Maguire defeated Trump last year. He has to sit here

frame and the match. Sometimes you can't over think it by trying to be

perfect. You can start to over think things. The overall standard has

been very good. And it's not over yet! Didn't matter what side he

finished on there. Just looking at Stephen Maguire's breaks. 92, 74,

56. You could play a lot worse than this and win matches. Robertson was

flawless in his first frame. This is just the nature of the beast. They

are all great players at this level. He just needs a simple one. Every

credit to this man. He will come back in the last couple of frames.

-- he has come back. He had to sit and watch Maguire win three frames

in a row. The sign of a champion when you can do that and then come

back with a break of 60. It showed his mettle. When he needed it most,

found a brilliant shot. It is a great feeling for a snooker player.

No matter how many times you've done it. Doesn't matter about the blue. A

fantastic match to watch. Judd Trump at the end, a reversal of last

year's result. He beat Stephen Maguire 6-4.
