Day 7 Masters Snooker Extra

Hello, a major that it brewing here in north London with the coronation

at Alexander Peya less expected. We have three Englishmen and a Scott in

the running who went into the semi-final stages. It featured the

defending champion, Mark Selby, up against his great friend and rival,

the magician, Shaun Murphy. Shaun Murphy gets to the semi-final --

gets the semi-final under way. And already, a mistake. He has left an

easy starter for Mark Selby. Not what he was looking for. Not the

best start for Shaun Murphy. Just coming to see the lack Potts -- the

black Potts. -- pot. If he gets low on it, he might be able to move the

red away from the black. The black does not pot. He might pot, he has a

nice angle on the blue. That was a bit short, isn't it? Yes, a bit

short. The first shot, he wanted to make sure he got it through. He

didn't want to be playing a delicate shot. When your opponent breaks, the

adrenaline makes the head on the back of your neck stand up. It is

obviously why Sean played that. What a good shots that is! Absolutely

sensational! With the rest, perfect! You can't place that much better

with your hand. He had a lovely angle, just lodged the red away from

Very hard to call the winner of this match. What would suggest is that I

believe, watching both these players so find the tournament, they have

not been winning frames busily. Sean started to do that but they haven't

been doing it consistently. They can't expect to make or three

chances a frame. Absolutely. -- two. If he wants to bring some or read

into play. -- reds. Nicely controlled.

Just got into the cue ball a little bit too much. He wanted to hit it

four ball. You see it on the right-hand side. It has gone awkward

now. The reds he is closest to, he can pot. He is not guaranteed to be

on a colour. REFEREE: 31. He has the yellow to go out. It is a

tough pot, this. He is bridging on the ladder of the

pocket. Sometimes the cue doesn't run smooth so he is tanker keep it

off the leather. -- trying at to keep it. And good shot again.

REFEREE: 33. A little bit awkward, bridging off the caution. --

cushion. Just lost a cue ball. He has another tough black here. A few

he has missed this week, potting them into a blind pocket. That is

good, Josh. Excellent. Excellent pot. So far, I thought this was a

dream start for Mark. His opponent broke off and he has every chance

now to win the frame without Shaun Murphy hitting a shot.

REFEREE: 42. Here is the brake off. As you said, just a little bit of

concentration lacking there. A bit of adrenaline.

Sometimes when the player wins the toss, you put your opponent in and

let him break off. He has worked hard to get himself in

this position. Fantastic start. A couple of reds and high value

colours. As you said, it is imperative that Mark Selby starts to

win frames in one visit. It is a great record in this tournament.

That could have gone wrong, but he is okay. Just this red and the black

to clinch the first frame. Just the black needed. To go 71 points in

front. Just 67 remaining. He used all the pockets. Shaun Murphy for a

break off and it cost him dear. A little bit wide but he just accepted

it. This was the shots that made it all

possible. Tremendous. Using the rest and finishing perfect on the black.

This is the start you would hope for as a player. The first frame in a

semi-final. He has pulled off some tremendous pots. That was probably

the pick of the bunch. That's yellow into the right centre was seen other

magnificent pot. Amazing, isn't it, how he shakes his head. He is yet to

make a century but that will be enough to win the first frame. He --

Shaun Murphy only had one shot. I don't expect Shaun Murphy to get

bogged down in a safety exchange. Absolutely not. First and foremost

comedy play on the game and don't slate Mark Selby dictate the pace of

this match. -- don't let. It is possible that Mark Selby is the best

safety play in the game right now. This is exactly what he has to do

that he has to get the cue ball tighter to the top cushion. He is

going to play those aggressive shots. He is going to play those

types of aggressive edge safety shots. Open up the balls. It forces

Mark Selby and forces his hands slightly.

on all of the reds. He just needs to nestle up to the one at the top

caution. But to see the reds are covered in the shadow anti- can't

see because of the green. If he doesn't catch this right, he may

nestle on the rate but it is dangerous. If he hits it too hard,

the reds will roll into the black. He needs to think about coming down

the right-hand side of the table. As you said, a lot of open reds. He

needs to be careful. I'm not quite certain what you are

thinking about. But there is a possibility closest to the right

corner pocket. He is not playing it that he is trying to nestle into

these reds. He has left a red to the left middle.

Black is tied up but I am sure pink Chris Read -- pots goes into bottom.

A decent chance for Mark Selby. He left himself on the pink. He

could simply pot this into the left middle. Well, just about. Helped it

enough. -- Held. Just getting his extension. This

means with the extension, he can use a long bridge. Quite a long distance

between the cue ball and the bridge here.

This will be handy, if he can pot is reds. -- this red. That may release

a couple of other reds into the other corner pockets. A little bit

disappointing there. He should have been just straight on the other side

of this pink. Sean came in, tremendous atmosphere.

A Superman theme. One short, then a couple of shots. He isn't getting

his chance to get his hand on the table. We suggested this would be

his game plan. A good pot. Shaun hasn't escaped. A tough game. All of

the intro and then you end up just sitting there, it you can't perform.

Couple of reds, couple of covers. Shaun Murphy is still to score a

point. He is having a look, not sure if he can get around the back of the

black. He can manage it. This would put him 62 points in

front with 70 remaining. A fantastic start for Selby. When he

gets in his seems to have that cue ball. That was a fine ball.

Acknowledged by the crowd. It is packed arena. Fantastic atmosphere.

There is his wife, Vicki. He is being supported by her.

He missed out on a century in the first frame which would have

disappointed him. If he was a bit lower, maybe he will drop this red

in the middle. It doesn't look like Shaun Murphy

will have his chance to put his first ball in this match.

Going for the blue. Chance of a century increasing. You couldn't

think of a more perfect start. Mark has

made 37 more career centuries then assured. He is OK. He stamped his

foot. Is that allowed? He will have to be a little bit

careful. You have to try and avoid the green. Not bad. Could have done

with a bit more pace with the cue for. He deserves a century. -- cue

ball. I think we going to see now. Good

shot. Nicely on the brown. It will put him on 99.

Absolutely wonderful! From his first pot in the first frame he has looked

majestic. He didn't get the pink. That was

more than enough. Shaun Murphy is still to pot a ball. To -- 2-0.

This is risky. Very risky. He played it in such a way that he has put the

cue ball back to baulk. He may be OK. A straightforward safety shot

for Mark Selby. Off the red. He can just get past

the yellow. In mid-session interval after this

frame. What Shaun Murphy wouldn't give for it. Two behind, four

behind... Can he get the chance? Can he create the chance?

Look at the safety success. Mark Selby, 100%. Shaun Murphy, 77%. He

has been on the West End of this so far. He has to find a good safety

here. He knows that he cannot afford any easy starters. Resch on every

shot in this very big frame for Shaun.

Containing safety shot. Can any wealth contain the situation? Feels

as though Mark has the initiative for an easy run off for any way he

chooses. He can find that baulk caution. Mark would like to put the

cue ball down where he was a few minutes ago, down towards the yellow

pocket because on that side of the table it will be more difficult for

Shaun to get the ball back to safety. A little bit short. He

wanted to cover the red on the right-hand side of the table.

You can expect Mark to play at better safety shot than that. He

hasn't disappointed. Good links for cue ball. Very good

length. The problem is, it you are going to be running into what could

be another colour. Because he is very close to the ball fashion

doesn't matter is put very easier. This is the tough pot. No guarantee

it won't be another colour. What a shot he played there. A

didn't expect him to play that slow. Oh! He thought he may have done all

of the hard work the fact that he went on the black. You can't lose

your concentration for a second on the scheme. He has handed a chance

to Shaun Murphy. Canon Shaun now take this, take control of the

minute ago. It would be very tight. I'm not sure what it will do.

A big opportunity for Shaun Murphy. He feel he has to get a sizeable

lead if not one frame with this visit. He needs to get his first

frame on the board. He will be playing for their trade that is near

the black spot. This will free the black spot. The black spot will be

clear. The black available in one pocket at the moment. The pink is in

the open. A decent chance. Thank goodness for gravity! Never a

doubt. Plenty of reds to go out here. He

will need to try and get back onto that black. It looks pretty good.

A nice cannon. He doesn't want to be straight on this red. Get back to

the black in the can. Playing that has brought us to reds on the bottom

hand corner into play. He has had a look at the one immediately below

the black. He will have to play the one he didn't want to play. He will

be running into another red. It is OK, it is OK. It could have gone

wrong. He is all right. It is such a big frame. He won't be

feeling too bad if he loses this one because, in all honesty, better

chance in the first three. He can't beat himself up about the scoreline.

Yes, and of course, it looks pretty straightforward, you would feel, but

there is added pressure. I am sure he can just drop this red

in and still hold for the black. I don't think it is the time to be

dropping balls and. Hope for the blue, as long as he gets a good

angle on the blue. He may be overdid it a little bit because he was so

desperate to get a good angle on the blue but with his cue action and

power, he could play the deep screw. He didn't want to be short of the

blue and overdid it slightly. This cue action shouldn't be a problem,

getting it back to the centre of the table. Lots of follow-through.

He is just short of where he wanted to be. He needed to run on just a

couple of inches. The frame could have been an end his messy. -- in

his mercy. That is always the problem, once you are in that

position. It tends to magnify. This is tougher than his last pot. This

will test is cueing. Yes, he misses it.

Shaun Murphy, 48. As you said, that is the problem. He wasn't good on

the red and the red was a difficult pot so he put all of his efforts

into it. He lost control. He hasn't left anything easy. He has a 47

point league. This is the tough pot to take on.

A super shot. He took that difficult pot on and all of a sudden, a chance

for a counter. This is the red Shaun Murphy refused

a few shots ago to try and get the black. It wasn't worth dropping it

in. It may have cost him. This is what Mark Selby is very good

at, these sorts of situations. The way he has an plane, you would

expect him to finish the frame from here. I know it is a tall order.

15. We know that is available in the

left corner. You just have to be careful here that he gets a good

position but pot that red, pot the pink, and those two will be

available into the right corner pocket. That was perfect. 22 we

could have a new favourite. Both the reds are available. They are in the

left middle. The pink clears the path for the reds.

Well! That just shows you when you are trying to hold the pink and you

nearly miss the red. He tried to squeeze a ten. He was more concerned

about the cue ball, wasn't he? It was imperative he got the pink.

He played that beautifully. 29. 30.

He will be kicking himself, Shaun Murphy. That mess on the pink, OK,

it wasn't difficult, very difficult pink under the cushion but it was a

position with his cue ball that would have irritated him.

He was going for the blue. He didn't like the red in the corner pocket.

He was trying to get the position for the blue. 44. Mark Selby is

going to need blue, brown, and pink for the lead. As I was saying, Shaun

couldn't win this frame. Too much to tell himself off about. He didn't

have a real chance in the first three frames but he had one so this

one will really hurt. " the blue. Perfect on the pink. The pink is all

he needs. In it goes! That wasn't like the first three. Mark Selby

made it. Selby with 48. 62. It gives Selby for-0 lead. -- 4-0 lead.

He tried to force the cue ball back up the table but you know it isn't

going to run so. An easy starter for Mark Selby.

Nice angle on the blue. If he wishes to go into the reds, he doesn't have

to. It is an opportunity here though.

He may have been a bit fortunate here. He may have wanted the left

middle but the ones and the right corner, they could be easily be

planted. He is very good at this type of shot. A former world

eightball champion. He is good at combination shots.

Dead straight on the pink. If he takes the red, he is looking at the

corner pocket after the pink. It may open up the black. Those two reds of

blocking the back. You'll have to try and hit exactly where he would

like the cue ball. You need to get the cue ball in a position so that

you can cut the red on the right of the black.

A bit short of pace for the blue with the fact that the yellow spot

will help from here. He wants to get on the red from the

left of the corner pocket. He has left it very well. An excellent

shot. The cue ball could have possibly come down a couple of

inches but he has done OK. It went to the same pocket.

33. I don't think that worked out too good. He may not have anything

to go for, here. Just watching his body language, you can always tell

whether player, the trooping of the salt -- drooping of the shoulders.

Where is the cue Bourgoin? -- ball going? There is not much to get out.

The only advantage for Shaun Murphy is that he needs a good safety here.

Not a bad target. The yellow is not on its spot. The yellow, green and

brown. He can use those as the lockers. -- blockers. There is a

possibility on the left-hand side for the cue ball. Pretty good.

Excellent shot. That was eight crafty shot. A --.

The perfect line. Half a chance for Shaun Murphy.

Under normal circumstances, I would expect him to pot this. Go for the

blue. That is better. Excellent. He didn't play that confident, did he?

Just a little touch of up behind the green. -- touch up. The reds are

spread. He might need it safe. If anyone can, he can. The angle is as

good as anyone in the game. I am not quite sure whether he can see the

left-hand side cushion. If you can't see it, there is no gap between the

yellow Antony Green. As close to the left-hand corner pocket. Two

cushions and try and nestle on it. He has done well. Excellent shot.

Purposely came down, Mark Selby. To make sure the reds doesn't go into

the right centre. -- red. It was passed to the pink. He may have to

play a different shot. Couldn't have played it much better than that.

A little bit surprised that he didn't get tight enough on the

green. Maybe a possibility he could taken it into the corner pocket? He

could have been straight and play it. He did have a look at it. If it

had been straight, he would have played it. He didn't want to risk

it. You can't blame him falling behind at every mistake he makes now

is going to be magnified. In his own mind apart from what happens on the

table. He is really under pressure here, Shaun Murphy. He is taking the

red on. A good pot. It needs to slow up a touch, slow up! When you just

need that extra run of a ball behind you. He never seems to get it.

Excellent pot, but it is Murphy 's law, when you need it, you don't get

it. He has had two good pots in this frame. So unlucky to finish down.

REFEREE: yellow ball. Shaun Murphy, one. He has made an awkward

queueing, but he has not made it particularly awkward -- cueing.

This is the red he is looking at. He was always going to believe in that

reds -- red. It is not really awkward cueing for Mark Selby. He

could be in trouble here, Shaun Murphy. When you play someone as

good as this. A straightforward safety shot he has left him there.

Just looking to see this red on the left-hand side of the table, if you

rob will sit to the top cushion or will he leave it safe. There is the

players' view. That is the only red he can hit. He can't try and pot his

way through it. A spot of bother here. I am not sure why he hasn't

been offered this caution. Why he can't clip those two raids. Write

off the pink spot. Maybe he doesn't feel that he can. -- reds. That is

very, very good. It didn't look Lake does anyway he could get the queue

back. -- look like. It was certainly worth the wait. He played it to the

right-hand side. -- cue. Superb safety. Plenty of respect from Mark

Selby. A safety shot from Mark Selby but it

seems he is in trouble again. He might snooker all of the reds. And

to be 27 points hide -- behind, he knows one mistake and it will be

another frame that is gone. A similar shot. To the last one.

Just trying to come off the right-hand caution. Try to clip the

red. He has to hit it almost perfect. It is a dangerous shot. --

cushion. It is the only possibility here.

Well played it, excellent shot. A good cue balls to. -- cue ball too.

Two great escapes from Shaun Murphy. -- played. A top drawer safety from

Mark Selby. He is playing well today. You have to say that. He is

potting great but his safety shots are of a high standard. Shaun

Murphy, just below that. Mark Selby is certainly calling the shots in

this tactical exchange but it is important for Murphy to win.

He doesn't have far to walk, Shaun Murphy, does he? This cue ball is

almost in the same position. A good reply needed. This could be good.

This could be very good. Just run a fraction too far. There could be a

chance of a pot on here for Mark Selby. Both reds go but certainly

the right-hand one. It is a natural path back to the

ball. Not that much pressure. This is an important ball that he pots,

it could be a frame winner. That will offer him a better position. It

is just about held up to make this green pottable.

Well held, with these two reds. That has been top-quality stuff from Mark

Selby. Excellent safety shots. He has created this opportunity.

Straight on the blue. Then it will be an open red. In potting this red,

he made give himself a finishing pot on the red. If this goes right, it

could be a frame winner. He could hit this with a smart he

says he likes now. -- with as much pace. He could have hit it a lot

harder than that. The reason I say that is because some of the ball is

there are cushioned and he could have hit it with a lot more pace.

Try to get some more reds into the open. When we saw the replay they

are, that is the last recruit three he wanted to hit. It is a real

Murphy will be believed. He hasn't won this frame just yet. --

I don't think he can see this from around there. He can swerve it. But

we have seen Mark Selby play for quite sometime. I know he got to the

final of the UK Championships but he is certainly wasn't in top form they

pink. All on the blue. Or --. The problem ball is obvious. No! No!

Missed it by a long way. That surely now means 5-0. There is a red and

their pink. All for Mark Selby. 44 points in front. He had better look

at the scoreboard here. He should be playing the pink, not the blue. He

has made a mistake there. Believe me, that is a vig... Hang on, I made

a mistake! Sorry, folks! Relentless. No risk. He knows his

opponent needs points to tie. He nearly got a snooker but he thing

is, it things aren't going Sean' way -- Sean's way.

That is it. That is definitely the fifth frame.

It doesn't seem to get any better for Shaun Murphy. Mark Selby is now

just one frame away from a place in the final.

Mark Selby breaks off in the frame, if he wins, he will be in the final.

I didn't see this scoreline. I thought it was going to be closer.

The way Shaun Murphy performed against another player.

Into so difficult. Everything you see going on, the safety is the

polity. When the chances, along, it just becomes a much more difficult.

He hasn't taken some of the chances he could have gotten.

You always get chances but the two frames of the first, you have never

potted a ball. It is a slow start. There you see, he has played the

pot. The double case. Where is the cue ball finishing? This game is no

different. He don't need to look. You seem to always guess at.

That is the one thing about this match, Shaun never stopped playing

the aggressive side. I don't think he would stop now. John is in the

studio. He needs a bit of help from his opponent as well. You can't see

them coming. It is not like Mark Selby is a 1-dimensional player by

any means. Absolutely. I can't recall anybody

like an. History is against them. In the final one, Stephen was 8-2

hind mike. -- behind. He has misjudged that. Shaun can get

through to the threat. Chas -- just got to keep a positive thought in

your mind. Forget the scoreboard, forget everything else. Concentrate

on one shot at a time. Easier said than done. That is what you have to

try and do. He wants to leave an angle so he can

move that other red away from the pink spot. That is exactly what he

is doing. He moves the red. It is covering that spot.

A little bit thin on the blue than he would have liked. He is

controlling the cue ball nicely. A good position.

Shaun Murphy, 25. There was heavy contact them. In all

fairness, let's have a look at it again. I am not sure if the red

jumped but it sounded like a heavy contact.

It seemed to come off a bit square, the red, didn't it? You would expect

him to miss it under normal circumstances. Seven.

Eight. They always say that the frame the

taxi past the win line is the hardest one to win. -- that takes

you past the win line. Mark Selby eight.

There you go! He wasn't doing that earlier in the match. For a

moment... The pace kept it out. The pink wall run him into just

above the black. He doesn't want to risk that at the moment.

An example. The lazy cue action through the cue ball back with no

effort. Four. He needs to slow up for action.

It is getting a little bit scrappy at the moment. A little bit off the

ball. It is just about OK on the blue. He

could play the green. It depends on the parting angle.

Seven. He plays it nicely. A fraction too

far. He would have liked to have been straight on the pink but a good

pot nevertheless. They need more pace. Another good

pot here. He loses the cue ball what he is. Pink into the green pocket or

the right centre. Whatever you wish. It is just not happening for him,

Shaun. He comes to the table 41 points

behind. Won. -- one. A doubt he will be winning

the frame on this visit. He is attacking the yellow and a positive

manner. He is going to play for the red just above.

He plays it pretty well. If he ran down a bit further he may have put

that in the hole but he may have to go for the blue. That just caught

out. Another chance Shaun. 38 points to the lead. He can't really get on

the pink. The black is not really available. If he plays for blue he

will need two of the remaining reds. It is not a given.

Shaun Murphy, six. He hit that all wrong but he, the

double. He has left the chance here. Red off the right-hand side

cushion. There is enough room behind the black for the new ball. He needs

to run. He has to be a little bit careful

here, Shaun Murphy. We'll know how good he at angles. If he gets the

opportunity, he can a land them. He tried to get back on the blue but

that is not go to help his cause. Should he take the green? That would

put him 40 points behind. I was awful bit surprised. He could

have gone for the Two snookers is a big ask here. It

is not easy to get in behind. You can always rely on Mark Selwood

normally thinking of something. He nearly got behind the black.

From first glance it looked like he had got away with it, Mark Selby. IT

is a long way away from that pot. It is hard to understand why Shaun

Murphy hasn't been on his game today. He looks good in the previous

round. A know we are nitpicking that that first frame when he broke off

and gave Selby that... Is that door shut? That easy opportunity.

There seems to be some noise. It is coming from the back of the arena.

I think you can come into a match with a game plan but when you break

off as badly a Shaun did in the first frame, and they know it is

only one frame, it really gets Mark spell the chance in the next one. He

went to frames, Shaun, which lasted about 25 minutes. Then the next

frame, the third frame, he made 50. All of a sudden, he feel as though

you get no table time and all of the practice he has done on the table,

it was just getting nothing on the match table. If -- you soon see

things slipping from you. Things look more difficult than it usually

does. Keep that foregoing! That was careless. He left the red to the

middle. That could be very, very costly. I was also great to see that

apart from potting that break, her safety play, all right, it may have

dropped at that, that he was winning with tactical changes as well. He
