There was a time when Sundays were all about reflection, a slowing

down of pace, a break from the rat race. A nice dinner, and in front

of the telly, with a few familiar faces. These day, it is just a

little bit different. Great effort. . Aguero! An amazing, amazing day.

The like of which we have never seen. Hello and welcome to Match of

the Day 2 in its new permanent slot of 10.25 on BBC One, as Sunday's

fixture list threat into keep pace with the traditional Saturday of

Premier League action. Next week we have Liverpool and Stoke and Mark

Lawrenson and Jason Roberts are bringing you this. The Saints go

matching into the lion's den. That is first. Then it is two sides that

kept us watching to the bitter end last season. And we pledge to bring

you all the important moments from Saturday every Sunday night. What a

unbeaten at home against a Southampton side hoping to provide

a massive upset and make it an unbeaten opening weekend for all

three promoted teams. It could all have been so different. That last

kick of last season means that Manchester City start in campaign

as champions and favourites. Other than that, not much has changed.

They still have the star-studded squad and money to strengthen if

needs be. They have a home match against a newly promoted side to

kick things off. Southampton though, aren't here to make up the numbers.

The Saints incepedable rise from the bottom of League One to the

Premier League in just two seasons, tells you all you need to know

about the team. They came up in style, scoring 85 goal, and arrive

with slings in hand. It is David minute, that goal for Manchester

City, their first title defence for 44 years, starts against a team

returning to a very different place and a different Premier League to

the one they left in 2005. City's only major signing makes his debut.

thinks it is. Manchester City get the chance to take the lead from 12

yards. Hooiveld, the Dutch defender was the player who was turned and

tricked. Jabbed at a leg. Nowhere near the ball. Caught Tevez. Clever,

at the keeper. Awful penalty from the European champion. Really is.

Lacked pace, lacked accuracy. Lacked everything that a Premier

City have reWard for all their possession. They have had to be

lucky about the finish. That is what he has been doing in the lower

devisions for the last three, four, five seasons. Manchester City 1,

Southampton 1. All of a sudden it Straight into the wall to get a

corner. The more pace than accuracy. Nasri puts it in, just over

Kompany's head. Not by much. Rodwell. He sold the pass short.

Nowhere near Silva. Look at this for a Southampton break. Davis to

the left. How much further can Lallana go. The referee to the

have the lead! What a turn round. Once again, it is a substitute

making an instant impact. Dreadful moment for Jack Rodwell on his City

debut. Wonderful one for Steve Davis on his one for Saints. Two

minutes on the field this one. It looked as though they made a mess

of their big chance here, Southampton, ball needed to go

further than that. When it came back today advice, what a finish!

We could have the story of the opening Premier League weekend on

here. Two changes made by Nigel Adkin, two goals scored by his

Toure. Dzeko. 2-2. Manchester City find a way through again. Now they

will be out to turn it right round again. Echos of the final day of

It is the right result but was it the wrong way to go about it?

We're not 100%. We made some mistakes but the big problem was

missing five or six chances to score when we were at 1-0.

defenders have just played against the best forward line they have

ever placed -- ever face as a team. That is the best team we have ever

faced. We have given ourselves an opportunity to get something from

it. We went 2-0 up. Obviously, we knew we were playing the best team

in the country. They managed to score a two which we were

devastated about but we are proud of how we played. We were the only

team who could have lost something out of this game. We missed a lot

of chances. But it takes nothing away from the performance.

Therefore, with the necessaries respect, I'm saying that we are

happy with the three points. More players needed? At the moment, I

feel so. Manchester City, getting by on a shoestring budget, they

need more players. They feared they had lost Sergio Aguero through like

damage -- ligament damage. He has tweeted that he has had no

significant damage. We should exonerate Nathaniel Clyne because

it was a good tackle. When a player goes down like this, you know it is

serious. Hopefully, hopefully it is not as serious as first thought. If

it is serious, ligament damage, it could be six months. The man who

want to -- who won a tall, to going gain 1, that would be outrageous.

amount of time his name has come up when you talk about players that

Championship, his name is always top of the list. I thought it was

at him and there is no doubt he has top ability. He worked hard to get

this opportunity. His record at Southampton has been unbelievable.

the opportunity to show them what he can do. He gets good positions.

He was hanging out, waiting for the ball. He is always calling for the

ball. He is asking for it. He gets the opportunity to get the ball

away and there is no doubt he will hit the target. That is the mark of

a player who is used to scoring goals. And then there was another

substitution. This is brilliant. All of the outfield players are

back in the penalty area, and talk about a well drilled outfit. Not a

particularly good pass by Rodwell but watch as we move on how quickly

they get men forward. It is like the Red Arrows, five against three.

They were defending a corner 15 seconds earlier. Maybe even 10

seconds, and then they get another. Top-drawer finish. Another

substitute Sion. That shows the substitute Sion. That shows the

desire from Southampton. Fearless would be one word to sum it up.

They went out there playing like they have played their every season.

We saw this last season and Southampton have followed it on. No

fear. They have had a good go are the champions. They will have been

disappointed not to get something from that. That is the keyword,

champions. People will be saying, well, that is not the City that won

the League. But if that was Man United Winning ugly, we would be
