Good evening. Welcome to Match Of The Day 2, where top footballers of

the past are behind me with top footballers of the present ready to

entertain us. Lots of games to enjoy this evening.

And we begin with some local rivalry.

You assemble a £100 million squad for times like this. Spurs return to

London after an energy-sapping trip to Russia.

West Ham have had a week to prepare for the short hop to White Hart

Lane. If that's advantage for the

visitors, it's welcome. They haven't won at Spurs in 12 attempts and

haven't won any of their last eight away in the Premier League.

And, they've failed to score in the last four. Watching this London

Derby, Steve Wilson. Always a proper London Derby this

between two teams who've wanted the Olympic Stadium. The Hammers have

won only three of the last 25 meetings. Spurs arrived back from

Moscow at 3 am where Defoe got his meetings. Spurs arrived back from

seventh goal from just four cup starts. He gets his Premier League

start in the season today, his 350th game for Tottenham and against his

start in the season today, his 350th former club.

West Ham haven't scored away from home yet and were the lowest scorers

in the top seven divisions in England away from home last season.

Injuries to front players has been England away from home last season.

the issue. Today, Diame will be the nearest thing they have to a centre

forward with Vaz Te and Downing in support. Look out for Morrison in

midfield, a star in the making they say.

Tottenham have been consistently excellent this season.

Just the defeat against Arsenal which would have been the one they

didn't want to lose. Eriksen. Dembele. Walker making the

run. Goes for power and he isn't far

away. Towns end caught that. Probably a yard wide in the end.

Townsend with a clever ball. Noble got a touch. Paulinho on the turn.

AVB will be a little concerned about the labours of his side in this

first half so far. Nolan losing it to Townsend.

Defoe in the box and he nearly got in front of Tompkins. Very close to

getting a touch on this. Hodgson watching a few of his

charges here today. Morrison. Claiming handball by

Dembele. The ref says play on. Vaz Te ahead of him. Morrison skipping

through. Taken out by Sigurdsson. It's at least a fee kick.

A free kick to West Ham. Downing would have long ago lost count of

the number of times he's taken free kicks from this kind of range.

Noble's on it as well. And it's a training ground... Nolan,

oh, what a good idea! And it so nearly worked. Everyone

expecting a Downing curler. Noble over the top.

To Nolan and almost a beauty. The problem for West Ham is you only get

that element of surprise once. Sam Allardyce will be amongst those who

thought it deserved better. Tottenham might reflect they need a

goal. Here is Vertonghen.

Sigurdsson. Good turn by Eriksen. Paulinho wriggling through and good

save by Jaaskelainen. He was on side, Paulinho couldn't reach it.

The chance is gone. Here is the chance right at the start of the

second half. He's on side. He'll be disappointed he couldn't beat

Jaaskelainen. It's a good save. The chance he's been waiting for, Defoe.

Almost squeezed underneath the West Ham keeper.

West Ham haven't beaten Spurs at White Hart Lamb since 1999.

Eriksen's ball in was a beauty. How it didn't end up in the back of the

West Ham net he's not sure. Three of them attacked it. Paulinho, Dawson

and Vertonghen, they couldn't get a telling touch.

Jaaskelainen seemed bamboozled. Dembele. Paulinho to Defoe. Defoe!

Really caught that. Jaaskelainen's got something on that. He is saying

to the referee he didn't. Defoe really lashed it. Generated

fantastic power on that. Downing.

Did Walker put that behind for a corner? He did.

Noble is a long way away from Walker. West Ham have an unexpected

corner here. Noble's corner. Header from Tom

sins. Saved. Tompkins again. Shout for handball from the fans. More

from the fans than the players against Dembele, but Lloris made an

important save there. West Ham fans behind their goal

wondered whether Dembele hadn't used his hand here, Tompkins certainly

used his head. Lloris with a hand up to it.

It's suddenly a much better game. West Ham have ridden the storm,

created a chance or two of their own. They have got a corner here.

Can Tomkins do it again? Oh, Reid. It's in.

West Ham lead. Winston Reid, his first effort was

blocked by his team-mate, but the second was straight in the back of

the Tottenham net and look at the joy from the West Ham fans.

His first effort hit Kevin Nolan but came straight back to him. I imagine

Nolan would be pretty happy about the fact that it did. I think it

would have gone in but for his block, inadvertent though it was.

Didn't matter. Tottenham 0, West Ham United 1.

AVB is thinking, we've made one change.

Noble. Lovely ball. Vaz Te is on side. Good save by Lloris and it's

gone in. It's 2-0.

More than a slice of luck about the way it ended up in the back of the

net, definitely. Vaz Te gets a lucky rebound off

Lloris. Who's conceded in the last seven

minutes as many goals as he conceded all season.

2-0 to West Ham United. Vertonghen for Tottenham dinked up

towards Salled doe. Lovely turn by Diame. Morrison.

Downing. Great pace away from Vertonghen. Brilliant stuff.

Morrison. Is that heading in? It's. It's three. A superb goal by

And Tottenham, who for most of this Tottenham 0, West Ham United 3.

season have been defensively inhave you rabble over the last ten minutes

have been defensively invisible. Brilliant goal by Morrison.

Fantastic pace. Vertonghen couldn't stick with him. Stepped round

Dawson, lifted it over Lloris and followed it to make sure it was over

the line before the Tottenham defender caught it. This is a superb

goal. Great finish.

Touch of a young Michael Owen about this.

Having conceded two goals in 11 games in season, who'd have thought

Tottenham would concede three in 13 minutes? Even the most avid

supporter wouldn't have expected 3-0 I don't think.

That is an outstanding win for West Ham United.

A rare away day success at Tottenham. It's been a long, long

time since West Ham won here. It is one of the shock results of the

season so far. Fantastic when a plan comes together

and you ask your players to take up a different role in the team in a

different system and I think that because we showed the lads just how

Tottenham are as a team and how they're set up, we felt it was the

right thing to do. They scored in a moment when we were very, very

strong through the set piece, in an area of the game where they are very

strong. They got the ball in. That is something that can happen in

games like this. You don't score and end up

suffering. The third goal is the one that is going to be picked out. I

couldn't help but think about Michael Owen when he was about 17,

what do you think? Yes, he's got that. We had a lot of problems with

him, his lifestyle offthe pitch, but obviously we are going to be excited

by his talent because it's frightening. If you ask anyone at

Manchester United, they'll tell you the same. Sir Alex told me, if you

can sort him out, you'll have a class player on your hands. I'm not

sure we have sorted him out, I think he's sorted himself out. If some say

Sam Allardyce is not a tactical player? I would say I've got a

northern act accident and I'm English.

Big Sam, thanks. In general, Alan, they fully

deserved the three points this afternoon. Absolutely, and I think

this is the beauty of the Premier League where you have Tottenham, the

home side, flying high. People are even tipping them to win the Premier

League. Defensively solid and resolute and taking the plaudits and

accolades and rightly so, against resolute and taking the plaudits and

West Ham, the away team were struggling, struggling for

confidence, for points, can't buy a goal, and they win 3-0. But to be

fair to Sammy he had a great game plan, defended deep, but they broke

and broke with purpose, conviction and goals. Take us through his game

plan, then. I thought Sam Allardyce got his tactics spot on today. He

tried something totally different. They packed the midfield. They got

bodies back in numbers, and I just felt they really, really defended.

The back four was magnificent. We can stop it here. There's nine West

Ham players behind the ball and they vus stifled Spurs all afternoon and

what they did well was when they won it, they broke very, very quickly,

and then they got bodies forward in support. We watch it here - we

circle Tompkins - he gets on his back side. Again, here, he positions

himself really, really well in the middle of the six yard box. Tompkins

again with a big header. It's Reid this time that wins it and again

Tompkins guesses right there, and again, you see it - they break and

Tompkins guesses right there, and break with pace. They get numbers

behind it. This time it's Sigurdsson that - and it's Reid that breaks

that. Look at the athleticism and power. Reid wants to go forward but

one of his team-mates is saying stay back. Dembele wins it off Noble

here. And look at his strength there - magnificent. He wins a foul for

his team. He's in a bit of trouble against Paulinho. He doesn't just

poot it out to play. He plays it down the line. He plays a one-two

and Dearmi is away. In the first half they defended superb.

Tactically, they were brilliant. Has word got out maybe Spurs go down the

middle more often than not and that Townsend at this stage, whilst

Lamela is still on the bench is, the only player who gets around the

back? In fairness he was a live wire for Tottenham today. He was the only

one trying to go around the full-back and get crosses in. His

delivery let him down once or twice, but Spurs have the platers to do

that. They have Spurs to go down the middle. Look at er-Eriksen,

Sigurdsson, middle of the park players. When you have people like

Soldano up there, they try these threaded balls through. I agree,

they should go wide more. A huge pre-match debate about whether it

should be Defoe or Soldano that started? Defoe got a rare chance to

start, and he has been on fire, obviously, in the Cups, and he has a

great chance. This is very, very early in the second half. It's

Paulinho who actually puts him through. He times his run

brilliantly, Defoe, and he should really score there. I think a player

of - look at this one. Look at the timing of that and OK, this is the

goal. Watch the goal. Reid - Vertonghen for me, I was a big fan

of his before today Burke he had a really poor game today. It's Reid

who outmuscles him, jumps higher. It comes off Nolan, but I think it was

going in the goals anyway. He's first to react there and a really

good header which puts Spurs on their way. It's Morrison who gets

him, into Noble, all pressing, a impressive ball for Vaz Te. One

thing in his mind. Vaz Te hits the target. Lloris is a bit unlucky, but

you need a bit of luck when you go to White Hart Lane, haven't won here

for years. He gets luck with the rebound. That's Tottenham.

Sam Allardyce's point about changing it tactically, going with what you

Barcelona have done in the past or Spain, it confused Spurs? I think to

a certain extent it did because what happens is you're used to having

one-up top or two up top with defenders. That's who you know, your

mark? You're comfortable because you know exactly who to mark. When

you're having to go a way to the mark, you tend to think, who am I

going to pick up? When they start running, you get maybe - I wouldn't

say so much confused, but you get out of position. That's where the

space is, and obviously, West Ham did exceptionally well to capitalise

on that space. It was the running of the two centre-halves that created

the third goal. It was. It's Vertonghen again on the ball. He

tries a nothing ball, if you like. I don't know what he's trying to do

there. Reid initially plays it out. Plays it into Dearmi. Look at that

touch. Morrison picks it up there. Look at the amount - look at the

pace he's running the defenders with, not great defending, but you

want to give Ravel Morrison credit for that I have heard a lot about

this lad, what he gets up to, mainly off the pitch, but today's

performance was magnificent. If he keeps going, he has a magnificent

future. He's in good hands with Sam Allardyce. Sam is not taking the

credit. It's the lad that has to turn it around and do it. You're

talking about the defending? Not at all. It was a fantastic goal. Like

he says, he's a talent. Great goal. At the start of the afternoon, eelt

other North London sides could have gone top of the Premier League.

Arsenal was at West Bromwich Albion. This was watched by Sam Brotherton.

It doesn't get any easier today with Arsenal in town, unbeaten since the

first week of the season and on a run of eight straight away wins in

the League. Albion forward cider Berahino makes his first Premier

League start after his match-winning performance against United last

weekend, and Nicolas Anelka returns from a foot injure. Scott Sinclair

and Victor Anecci are unavailable. Arsenal returning to the Hawthorns

for the second time in less than a fortnight, having won 4-3 on

penalties after a 1-1 draw here in the Capital One Cup.

West Brom feeling much better about themselves going into this game than

they might have done a couple of weeks ago, having won their last two

matches. Shot comes in, good save by Szczesny. It was Berahino making his

first Premier League start who caused the problem there. The ball

flicking to the centre, and Berahino - shot wildly deflected there off

Mathieu Flamini. Very quick reactions from Arsenal's goalkeeper,

who was initially wrong footed but able to recover and spring to his

right. Four clean sheets in ten matches so far this season going

into this one. Jenkinson. Myhill, what a pass!

Gibbs! What a superb pass there, then blasted over the top. . Arsenal

have won each of their last five Premier League matches. It's a run

have won each of their last five that they didn't manage at any point

during last season. Wilshere, Giroud, Wilshere with a shot. Had

Myhill at full stretch, but always going wide. West Brom proving hard

to break down here. Koscielny, Gibbs, - up against Jones, flick

from Wilshere, Gibbs with the cross, corner. Jenkinson is the only one

staying back. Gibbs is also coming back now. Koscielny down in the

penalty area - good save! Rifled in back now. Koscielny down in the

West Brom nodding off in midfield just for a moment. Arteta almost

able to reclaim position, but now it's with Amalfitano - that's

Wilshere diving in. Still with Amalfitano. Well struck, blocked by

Mertesacker, sliced away by Jenkinson, and then hacked clear by

Gibbs. West Brom were banging on the door

here with this one. Arsenal rocking a bit now. And they've got another

corner kick. Boisterous atmosphere inside The Hawthorns as halftime

approaches. A comfortable header away for

Jenkinson. More pressure. Amalfitano! Oh, and West Brom have

got the lead! Claudio Yacob! The header away only found its way to a

West Bromwich Albion player. Amalfitano with a second chance to

put in the delivery, and Yacob was there to head home inside the near

post. And Arsenal are behind. And West Bromwich Albion, who upset the

odds at Old Trafford only a week ago, have the lead here against

Arsenal. Ramsey, Arsenal's best ever in the

-- effort in the first half came from the Welshman, saved by Myhill.

Berahino - oh, he's away from Mertesacker. He has Anelka with him

- in towards Anelka - what a chance that was. It just caught the back

half of his boot rather than the front, a blistering pace here by

Berahino. Arsenal were looking for an offside. It was a close call and

it looked to the world there as if Anelka was going to get on the other

end of that. Arsenal responding straight away. Olivier Giroud in

towards Jack Wilshere, a chance for the shot. Tackled by Billy Jones,

leaves the Arsenal man clinging on to his left ankle. The shot was

always going wide. For the first time in a little while not going

according to plan for Arsene Wenger so far. Ridgewell. Here comes Anelka

now. Szczesny was off his line, thought better of it, went back in,

and it's wide! A great chance for 2-0. And don't they know it in the

Birmingham Road end. Twice West Brom have nearly doubled their lead in

the early stages of this second half. It stays at 1-0. West Brom's

play full of confidence. Really taking it to Arsenal here. Anelka -

turning away from Koscielny, the header away by Mertesacker. Slipped

by Mulumbu. Here he is now. Arsenal win the dual this time.

He takes out Giroud. Rosicky in the centre, Wilshere going forward as

well. Into Jack Wilshere - what a tremendous goal! A cracking strike

from Jack Wilshere. West Brom had really been taking the game to

Arsenal, but Wilshere fires home the response. And it's 1-1 here. Just

under half an hour to go. And it's - the shot whistled in, it takes a

deflection off his shin, but Myhill had no real chance of getting to it.

Yacob in towards Mulumbu, gets the better of Rosicky, doesn't have an

awful lot of room to manoeuvre. Now it's Billy Jones. Will he let fly?

He certainly will, saved by Szczesny. Just because Jack Wilshere

scored that equalising goal, the balance of the play suggests it

doesn't necessarily mean the pendulum is swinging their way.

Flamini. Wilshere. Giroud makes the run. The pass is fantastic, Giroud

now for Arsenal - good save. On side as the ball is played through to

Giroud, gets around the goalkeeper, but he claws it away. This team have

acquitted themselves really well. Mertesacker, closed down by

to be a West Brom free kick. Myhill aims for the head of Shane

Long. Was he knocked over in the penalty area there by Koscielny?

Here it is again. Lee Mason's not having any of it. West Bromwich

Albion looking in vain. Last chance now, surely. If Arsenal are going to

win the game, it needs to be now, but West Bromwich Albion stay

strong. And there goes the final whistle, and West Bromwich Albion

back up their memorable victory at Old Trafford with another excellent

showing against one of the topsides here, but Arsenal drop points for

the first time since the opening weekend. Season. The final score at

Albion-1, Arsenal-1. We have a resilient tea We had a

similar situation last week at Old Trafford but we didn't sit back.

Ourselves and Arsenal tried to win the game which was probably good to

watch, nerve-racking on the bench. We trust ourselves in these games

now and trust ourselves to play to a good level. I think today was a good

game between two good teams. In the first half, we had promise to find

the second gear. West Brom confirmed today the great performance. 1-0

down was a task for us to come back to. We had good control of the game

going in front. We missed a couple of good chances at the start of the

second half. Maybe if we got to 2-0 we might have gotten all three

points. Better headlines for Jack Wilshere afte the week he's had?

Yes. It's come at a nice time to score. We thought we could win, had

a few chances, but at the end of the day, I think a point's fair: .

Similar to last week really. If you sit back and let teams like that

walk all over you, that's what they'll do and it's evident tab that

-- inevitable that you will let yourself down. We took the stance

this week that we'd try and cause them problems and same last week and

we did that again this week. FORCEDWHITE

A good game of football? It was. Arsenal under Wenger after the

debacle of the first game of the season against Villa, they didn't

panic, assured the fans they'd come good and they have, they have had a

great run. West Brom as well, Sunderland away, Man United away,

Arsenal at home. They have taken the points, they look a different side

now. No confidence early in the season, today they were a force and

I thought they should have won the game. We'll look at some of their

chances in a moment. When Jack Wilshere did the post-match

interview, I thought, fair play after the attention you have had, I

wouldn't expect him to face the media, but for him, he has another

problem, the abundance of riches that Wenger has in his area of the

field? If you look at the players that can play in the middle, you

have Ramsey, Ozil was magnificent, Arteta and Wilshere himself, you

can't play them all. So Jack's playing wide on the left. They used

to call it the graveyard position. Here is a graphic of how many times

he touched it and it's always on the left.

The problem with Jack is that he has a brilliant left foot and he wants

to be on that foot all the time. In that position, he'll not go down the

line and cross it, he wants to cut inside. You cut inside from the left

on your left all the time, you have a problem. If he takes one step and

whips it in, it's good, but this is not the Jack Wilshere we know and

love. Same again. Doesn't want to go

there, comes back inside. Again, the ball retention really

good but going nowhere. The number of times he gets caught here, he's

hustled, always wanting to go on his left, trying something different

here, gets caught and West Brom back on the attack. This is the one that

shows you, you know, the angle of that ball, there's no way that he

can play it forward. He needs his right foot. The other side, the

angle shows you that he can play it anywhere he wants.

This is it, one, two, bang. That is fantastic.

Didn't have a bad game or a great game. We want to see middle of the

park, get in the centre circle, drive forward, slide the ball

through. He has heck of a competition to do

that? I think as well, the form of Ramsey, he's become a must now in

the middle of the park. When Ramsey gets off this hot streak a he's on,

Wenger may well bring Wilshere back into the middle. That is his best

position. You want the best players in their best positions so you may

see Wilshere move back into the middle. It's a nice problem to have.

Not if you are an Arsenal player. You said you thought West Brom

should win and they had several opportunities? Anelka two

unbelievable chances at 1-0 up. The first one, I think he disreally

well. He easy movement is good, as you would expect.

Great ball across the box. The second one, this is bad defending.

Met sacker and Koscielny. Koscielny's got to come across. He

comes and mops up. Great movement from Anelka again.

He's in on goal and if he scores here, which he should do, it's all

over. In the last kick of the ball, Koscielny who's had a couple of

penalties, rash challenges, one against ago Bonn Lahore first game

of the season, next one against Sunderland, and then the last

kick... Penalty is it? The ball's not there. -- Agbonlahor.

He almost knocked Long off his feet there. Penalty. Very lucky there. Do

you not agree with that? It's not for me to ask. Just the way you are

looking at me, I can hear you thinking it's not a penalty kick. I

can hear them upstairs. Ignore them upstairs, they are saying move on.

Did you think it was a penalty kick? We have to move on. Moving on. Last

weekend, we saw Norwich getting a value yuebl win at Stoke. They had

another Sunday assignment this weekend with Chelsea their visitors.

The Canaries haven't beaten Chelsea here since 1994. To do so, they'll

have to improve on their recent record.

A delightful Juan Mata goal is sufficient for settling thisture

Just before Chelsea took the lead, Demba Ba felt he ought to have had a

penalty after his tussle with Bassong.

He had the choice, Eto'o or Ba. Ba already impacted the game.

Ramirez. Mata might think about hitting this. Goes in search of

Demba Ba. He's on side. And just about clawed beyond the post.

Chelsea are finding Norwich very about clawed beyond the post.

from being in the position from which they want to win the match.

the ball. You are just getting the sense of

the momentum that it's shifting from the visitors who've had large

control of this game back to the hosts.

slowly but surely. Started to ask a few more questions. But the delivery

Hazard made the run forward. You sensed Hazard would score once

Tettey hadn't covered him. Huddy will probably feel he ought to have

done more to have prevented that. A delayed reaction from the Chelsea

winning goal themselves, and they got caught. Are they going to get

caught with another counterattack here? Here's Wilian, now Eto'o. Run

into a bit of a wall - then Wilian - oh, that is absolutely magnificent!

A moment just to sit back and enjoy. Well, that is unstoppable. What a

strike. Only on the field a few minutes, Wilian. He's barely had a

touch of Premier League football, but on one of his firsts, he

produces an absolute stunner, and even Jose Mourinho is off his chair

TRANSLATION: It's important because it gives the team confidence, to

Today I feel we deserved more. At least a draw. But again in

football when one thing is dominating, which we did for most of

the game, I think apart from the first 15-20 minutes, but football is

we give Ben Davies a lot of praise on this show, done exceptionally

well, but he doesn't track his runner there, Lallana gets the cross

in and Ben, we can see from this other angle, when he gets the cross

in, Lallana goes up the inside, Ben looks over his left shoulder and

doesn't see Lallana, carries on his run and he should be tracking his

runner there. He gets on the inside and in the end it's a fan it is a

tuck finish. Southampton have done greet, only

conceded two all season, up to fourth, so it's a great win for

them. They were helped by the keeper again today.

They have spent some money trying to strengthen the spine. Boruc was

impressive this afternoon, wasn't he? He's a world class player. I

played with him at Celtic and some of the saves he's capable of making.

He's a character. The one thing he has got is brat ability, he's a

great shot-stopper. Excellent this afternoon. Would San sea's cause

have been helped if they had Williams today? I think so, he's

Captain of Swansea and his country. He doesn't miss many games and you

think the second goal today at times you look at it and wonder whether

Ashley might have put his foot through this. It's a total mix-up

between the two players. He has to head that back to the

keeper or put his foot through it. Rodriguez hustles and it's a good

finish the end. Michu is someone we have praised a lot also on the Match

of the Day. Lots of people praise him. He's been called up for the

Spanish see yaed as well -- squad as well. How are you viewing his

partnership with Bony which is still in a fledgling stage? Laud run wants

to play them both in the same team I think -- Laudrup. Michu wants this,

off Bony. Bony opts for a team shot. You can see once or twice that Michu

plays into Bony here. For them both to play together, it needs to work.

For the last four, five, six seasons, Swansea have been playing

with the one at top. It's disrupted how they play. The results have

shown that this season. I would like to see Michu not come in so deep.

He should be further up the pitch. No way he's scoring from those

positions. And Michu is so powerful, a good centre forward who can get

hold of it. He plays it around the corner. A poor touch from Bony.

Laudrup spent £12 million on Bony. Great work from Michu. Sets up Bony

who can't get the height and power. They are looking to play together

all the time, so the signs are there. They've both got five goals

each in Europe as well, but for that to work, that partnership, it's

potentially... The clips show them playing one on, one off and the one

off is Michu. He's such a good footballer, he doesn't need to go

deep. So he can play but you don't want him to drop as deep as that?

That's what Shelvey is there to do and Britton.

I would like to see Michu closer to Bony who has great feet. He's sew

prolific, he has to play up top. Yesterday's games now. We start with

the game at the Stadium of Light where David Moyes' Manchester United

came from behind to beat Sunderland. They got off to a great start, as

Gardner capitalised on a mucksup between Jones and Vidic.
