If you have had a heavy weekend, that might not have helped, but we

go again and we hope you are up for it. Every week we will bring you the

best of Sunday's game. This is also the home of goal of the month. And

tonight we throw in the expertise of Danny Murphy and Philip Neville as

well. Time now for our first action and it involved two teams who saw a

few high-profile departures this summer. Luis Suarez's goal/Liverpool

used to winning at home, but they are not all comfortable. That

about the final score. I felt we played a great second half and we

got the best chances to score and win. But we deserved a draw, we

deserved not to lose, but sometimes it is the difficult part. Do the

club have a point to prove, you are a new face after the well-documented

ones who have left? Yes, I think everyone wants to show their new

players and they want to show we are good players and Southampton is a

good club. Do you feel more responsibility now as the main

striker? The extra responsibility comes from everybody else. If I have

added responsibility, then I guess it is me. From a personal point of

view I go into every game with the same mentality and my team-mates

helped me out to score goals and I do my best to create chances for

them also. Maybe we should not read too much

into early performances? Liverpool are not as fluid and creative as

they normally are but they want. Southampton with the better team in

the second half and had many positives from the game. We were

talking about them losing so many players, they can be very pleased

with the performance. We can look at Daniel Sturridge, let's not look at

the responsibility, because his and set confused me, but it is how his

role might evolve without Luis Suarez. It is not just his role, it

is everyone around him. He likes to go out into wide areas and plays a

little bit loose. We saw that last season a lot. He want onto the

right-hand side. A lot of the players, he squares up and create

one against one situations. On the right-hand side, you need

penetration. The centre-backs are not occupied. This run was from

Raheem Sterling. That was the first example in the game where they had

penetration. This is the second example.

It is crucial for Liverpool, particularly when they are playing

one up front. This is the goal. I think it is the pass of the weekend

from Jordan Henderson. But it was the run from Raheem Sterling that

made a fantastic goal. This is his bread and butter. He needs to spend

more time in these central areas. It was a poacher's effort. When we're

talking about responsibility, there is responsibility on the midfielders

and responsibility on players like Sterling and Coutinho as well. He is

a loose centre forward, he likes to go into wide areas, has blistering

pace. It is up to the likes of Sterling to make those runs. Let's

look at the positives for Southampton? There were many.

Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama were fantastic. Schneiderlin especially,

at the recent troubles. And the new player, Tadic. He is creative,

scores goals and makes goals. He was trying to penetrate the Liverpool

back four, picked people out. Comfortable in possession. A lot of

players we see have taken time to adapt. He has gone to Anfield, got

on the ball. As a midfielder you have to make things happen. That did

not quite work, but he did not give up. Good turn here, brave again.

Keeps popping up in these little positions. Little reverse passive

with the right foot. Nearly comes to a goal. This is what he was like all

afternoon. He got his reward with a wonderful bit of skill. With Adam

Lallana leaving and the other players, they will rely on players

like him to create. This is as good a piece of skill as I have seen all

weekend. When he went off, they lost a bit of balance. They brought Shane

Long on to replace Tadic and the Liverpool winner came from the

right-hand side. You find it refreshing somebody comes in on the

opening weekend, and don't use the cliche to get used to the Premier

League? He is an unknown to a lot of people who don't follow the Dutch

league, and they gifted on the ball. It is having the mentality to go and

get on the ball away from home. You could argue Southampton had the

better chances in the second half? They were the better team in the

second half. M. Steven Davis should have put his foot through the ball.

false to Schneiderlin and with his performance, deserved this. Shane

Long will not sleep tonight thinking about that. You will see a wonderful

save from Simon Mignolet. You are talking about top polity. It gave

Liverpool the three points because that was at 2-1. If that had gone in

the net, would they have blown for a foul? I think there was a little

nudge, but they will not sleep tonight after missing that. Where

would you strengthen Liverpool? There has been a lot of talk about a

new striker being needed. They have creativity in the team so a striker

with the good. I am worried in the midfield area. If Steven Gerrard

gets injured,. Yes, they have brought in Can, but he is Young and

inexperienced. Somebody like Schneiderlin would be good. He has

top-flight experience. I worry for them in the midfield areas if they

get some injuries in the season. You are not likely to be Liverpool

manager, where would you strengthen midfield? No, centre forward. Now,

onto the looked at the champions. No grade. It could be five. It is

five. Fernandinho. Edin Dzeko, 1-0, Manchester City. That blue Moon has

is where the title defence begins, a place and opponents they might have

excite this season. Tim Krul started to go towards the

ball and then quickly had to go back towards his goal. David Silva puts

the ball into the goal. They came out in Newcastle like a blue swarm.

Did not see any danger when it was lazily played forward to Edin Dzeko.

What a lovely touch it is back into the path of David Silva. He realises

he cannot do anything from there. It is the lovely backheel, brilliantly

done. Expertly finished by the Spaniard. Nothing Tim Krul could do.

Smile on the features of Manuel Pellegrini. Newcastle go a goal

down. David Silva tamely gave it away.

Manchester City have Toure down. Has been pulled back to his feet, but he

is not quite right yet. It is a good delivery. It has beaten everyone. No

way to squeeze it in yet. They block it again. Joe Hart is out to catch.

Nothing wrong with the corner, but what happened next? Very poor

Manchester City defending. I think Gouffran had too much time to decide

Not much in the game, it could turn very quickly. Perez is running in.

Demichelis with him. Deflected wide. What an impact! I think it proved to

be a very important touch from Fernando. Still, it was so close to

going in. Pulled back for Sissoko. I don't

think it will get better than that. That might need a game gone for

Newcastle. The goal is way out of his sights.

Sergio growl, will he get an opportunity be broadly end? And

Running away from Coloccini. One touch of the ball beat his fellow

Argentine. The first shot did not beat Tim Krul, but Aguero kept his

as he means to go on, and so have Manchester City. Today we won the

game and we played very well. Especially the first 45 minutes

where we had the position of the ball. We did not have any problem in

defending or attacking. We have the options. If we had got the

equaliser, we could have won it. They did not create big chances

their from us. We have to keep these performances going. Is a

goal-scorer, can you get almost as much pleasure when you backheel it

for someone else, like that? Yes, I liked my assist very much. It was

important for the team. I am a team player. I try to assist if I don't

score. I want to thank the amazing fans. They were always behind us.

Once again, brilliant. You only have to see them close-up to realise how

they -- how good they are, individually. Kolarov at left-back

is like having three players. Their spark and magic wallet for them.

Alan Pardew talks about spark and magic. The other thing if you are

close up to Manchester City, the majority of them are physically huge

and powerful in the City squad. They are not just technically gifted,

they are hugely physical, powerful. You look at Joe Hart, Kompany,

Kolarov, Dzeko, Toure, the list is endless. Newcastle were missing some

players today and they did OK. A few of their new players did opaque as

well. But they did not create anything. They did not make any

chances. Going back to the physicality of Manchester City,

there was a new player, Fernando in midfield today, immense. Yes, he is

someone I watched last season. He just loves defending. Here is the

first clip. He almost gets done by a 1-2. He makes a last-ditch tackle.

He is so quick to the ball, a good athlete, strong, breaks up the

attack for Newcastle. He fills in holes. Kompany gets drawn out of the

middle. He sprints back and is thinking of defending while the team

went are attacking. He sprints past Kompany, get school side and stops a

certain goal. It was an outstanding debut. City had good performances,

but he was the best. The extra option he gives them, no disrespect

to Newcastle, but in the bigger games, it is the platform of

Fernando and Fernandinho and Yaya Toure. He did that later in the

game, it could be wise in the bigger games. It will give them immense

athleticism and technical ability in the middle of the pitch. One thing

this weekend, seeing the title contenders other than Chelsea, of

course, they looked most comfortable to me. The players on the bench was

immense, Zabaleta, Navas, Aguero, James Milner. I mean, their squad

looks so full of strength and talent. Alan Pardew spoke about his

squad, said they had more depth because of the players they have

brought in. There were positive signs amongst the six today. I

thought they did really well. City did not create that much in the

game. The new signings did well, Riviere, a couple of the young lads,

Jack Colback did well in midfield. They missed the experience of De

Jong, Tiote and Cisse, to give them physicality in the team. Newcastle

will be fine, they will have a good season. Alan Pardew has that Peres,

for example, needs to condition himself a little bit. They will be

OK, it is always hard integrating new players. There is signs they

have talent there. Today, they came up against a good Man City side and

they will not be the first team to get a lesson by them. He can be

reasonably pleased. Go through the goals. The first goal was quality,

the Toure pass and the great run. I haven't seen Dzeko do that too

often. A brilliant run from Silva, of lovely finish. The sets -- the

two centre halves, no communication. We see Janmaat, looking for Silva.

He is behind him. He has got caught ball watching. Silva has made a

great run inside him. When he gets one-on-one, you expect him to score.

Really poor defending, twice, for Newcastle. This was the second goal.

Similar in a way. Aguero had come on, you cannot allow Sergio Aguero

to face you open the box. He has a low centre of gravity. Look how

quickly he gets up there. Defensively, Alan Pardew will not be

happy. Coloccini is in pole position. When the ball is played to

Aguero, Janmaat has to break his neck to get back in there. He gets

caught ball watching. If I wear row squares it to Silva, he is caught

out, similar to the first goal. City did not create that much in the game

and -- that Alan Pardew will be disappointed with. You talk about

ball watching rather than man watching. You talked about one

manager in particular who worked on you watching the man, that rather

than the ball. We would play under Mark Hughes at full, you would fake

the one tos with another player. Instead of turning with the ball,

you would block the man. It sounds simple. It made a huge difference.

Especially for full-backs and wide men. Even in a midfield capacity,

when you are played quick around, it gave you a different mindset. It was

a clever way of stopping it. We saw the modern fullback who does not

like to get taken around. Climb, the first goal and the second goal for

Liverpool, you have to get back next to your centre-half and recover. I

am not sure they are taught that way now. We have seen the title

contenders apart from Chelsea. Will you look for them to exercise the

same control that Manchester City demonstrate? I think so, you expect

them to dominate and be strong. They have added more quality. They aren't

Manchester City the two to beat. With Manchester city and Chelsea,

they are the only teams who don't want to sign players. The rest want

to sign two or three players. They are settled teams and will put on

good performances. Now for yesterday's action. Manchester

United opened against Swansea. For the second season in a row they,

they had a new manager in charge. The same issues remain. These

players today won a Championship, your job now is to stand by your new

manager. Incredibly privileged I was given the opportunity to manage

Manchester United. Manchester United are on the end of a 3-0 beating. The

bobbin there is nothing there. I choose because of the talent, they

have a philosophy. That philosophy has given in the past a lot of

success. The fans have been happy since Louis van Gaal has arrived.

They respect him as a manager, trust him to improve Manchester United

after last season. Most United fans are keen to write off last season

and move forward. Now we have Louis van Gaal, he will have new methods

and be the real transition in 2014. We will have a better season than

last year, obviously. People expect us to fail, but we will not. It is

not beyond the realms of possibility that we might win it this year.

Van Gaal does not seem fazed by that. We are back at Old Trafford

and we will deliver. There is a new headmaster and pupils will stand up

to the task, big-time. Once again, a new manager walks the

line at Old Trafford. A chance to hit it. I really well taken goal, so

coolly slotted into the corner, is Ki Sung-Yueng. A bit of unrest in

the crowd. That is Rooney. That is 1-1, pucked home by the new

Manchester United captain. A flicker, just a note or two. Here is

van Gaal, beaten in his first Premier League game as Manchester

United manager. It is very disappointing. We have lost our

first home match. We did not play as a team, not in the first half. I

think we were very nervous. But is also disappointing for the fans,

that is a pity. Gutless, toothless and clueless. Pathetic. A dreadful

result for United. Things had better get back on track because fans are

really annoyed. There are a few players who have disappointed today.

Probably have their last chance now. There was a lack of pace. We need

some new blood in key positions across the defence and in the wider

positions. His background is commercial. He is not doing it on

the pitch, bringing in players. There is a lack of confidence, like

last season, lack of direction. Knowing those players, having

coached most of those players, did anything about yesterday surprise

you? No, it did not really. They lost four players in the summer,

four big players. The squad does need strengthening. I don't think

run-of-the-mill players, we need to find some top, top class world-class

players. The fans are going to demand that now. It was a difficult

start. Swansea had nothing to lose and played really well. United fan

use to Karl Marx quote, history repeats itself. The first time as

tragedy, the second is fast, to describe the last two summer

transfer window is under Edward Wood. Is it fair? It is a worry.

They did have a lot of injuries but even if they didn't, they haven't

strengthened and replaced the huge characters. That is a big void to

fill. The quality is imperative. There is no point getting players

for the sake of it. You need players that will make them competitive and

that will cost a lot of money. That's look at the back page from

tomorrow's Daily Mail, saying ?100 million, a United line-up megadeal

to lure a player. That would include wages. Do you think United are

obsessed with breaking the bank for every player, rather than looking

for value. They have to get the best players, whether it costs 100

million, or 200 million. They haven't done it for a few years. It

is that calibre of player, to lighten Old Trafford again. I

realised Swansea fans are saying we won the game, talk about what we

did. A young manager, inexperienced and Garry Monk. He has been canny in

the transfer market over the summer. He has made good signings,

Sigurdsson is one of the better ones. What I like about him is he's

calm, he has been at the club a long time and knows the philosophy. He

knows what the fans want and the chairman wants and the players seem

to play for him. The continuity has stayed the same from which is

brilliant. A great result. I don't think Swansea fans are too happy, I

tipped them to struggle because they lost Michu and a couple of players

but yesterday they should spirit. More from yesterday now, starting

with the longest serving manager in the Premier League.

As Arsene Wenger steps into his 90s season as Arsenal manager, Pulis are

looking for a 17th boss in that time following the departure of Tony

You think that Tottenham Hotspur made a shrewd signing. Eric Dier has

almost slipped under the radar, an English youth international, played

at every level. I played with him at Everton, and they sent him from

Sporting Lisbon to toughen him up because he was great on the ball,

great composure. He has come up through the Sporting Lisbon Academy.

Always making an angle for the ball. He is a great passer of the ball.

Almost like Rio Ferdinand, when he was young. His weakness was his

defending, one V1. He was a bit soft. He has worked hard at it. He

has played for Sporting Lisbon's first-team 26 times. He is an

England international. Yesterday, he had to go to right back and he wins

the first header, he goes straight into attack. Good pace as well. An

outstanding debut. It was capped off with the winning goal. This is his

composure. Defender panics, but he did not, he takes a touch to the

side and finishes it. He could be the next big player. Maybe it is

hard to evaluate, but does he look like he has come through the

continental ranks? With his composure on the ball, his

technique. Is that kids on the continent, rather than our

Academys? In terms of his toughness and defending, he was miles behind.

That is what the Academy coach in Lisbon wanted him to do, to toughen

up and he has got his reward. Crystal Palace, going for the

experience of Tony Pulis worked for them last season. Do they note -- do

they need to go for similar experience this season? Not

necessarily, but whoever goes in has a hell of a job to do. A lot of the

players he brought in came for him, so it is a problem for them. They

are great supporters with a decent squad, I think they will be OK.

Whoever comes in has a tough act to follow. It is a surprise he left.
