Everton against Liverpool - once called the friendly derby. In the

Premier League era it's been anything but.

COMMENTATOR: It's a red card. 21 red cards in 24 years. The last six

years have been barren for Evertonians, 12 matches without a

win and some humbling defeats. Comem comem the nightmare goes on and on

and on for Everton. Liverpool remain title contenders. In this race,

Klopp and co have little room for error.

COMMENTATOR: It's unbelievable! A first taste of a Merseyside derby

for Ronald Koeman. Could his side produce another memorable win under

the Goodison Park lights? Evening, we'll bring you the highlights of

yesterday's matches, including Manchester City against Arsenal and

the thoughts of Kevin Kilbane and Charlie Adam. We start at Goodison.

Ecommentary from Simon Brotherton. Enton's spirited come back last week

has bolstered them into this match against their neighbours. Liverpool

have dominated the derby in recent years. They've had to settle for a

draw here in each of the last Four Seasons. Everton's manager, Ronald

Koeman is forced into making one change this evening. Captain

Jagielka missing the game after his red card against Arsenal. (

Lukaku has scored five goals in eight league appearances against

Liverpool. Juergen Klopp's named an unchanged line-up. Divock Origi has

scored in each of the last five matches. Daniel Sturridge returning

from injury has been named among the substitutesment

-- substitutes. Festive bragging rights on the line. Goodison packed

to the rafters and crackling with atmosphere.

In towards Lukaku in the centre and hooked away by Jordan Henderson.

Good play from Everton. This was the delivery from Lennon

which nearly found Romelu Lukaku in the centre.

A vital touch from Klavan. He hasn't played much for Liverpool. But he's

got a lot of experience. 116 caps for Estonia.

Wijnaldum teeing it up. Five attempts on goal in the first half

so far, three from the home side, two from Liverpool. Nobody with an

effort on target. Jagielka suspended tonight following that red card

against Arsenal. Sweeping move here from the home

side. It strikes Henderson on the arm. In the a great deal he could

have done about it. I think the ball flicked up against

his chest and then hit his arm after that. Liverpool now moving forward

with Firmino. Clyne - dangerous! Wide from Origi.

Everton fans howling about an incident about one side of the

pitch. Then their team under pressure at the other. Clyne rolling

it back into Divock Origi. He could only put the ball wide of the post.

That's the best we've seen from Liverpool in this first half. Here's

the incident at the other end. The ball hits Jordan Henderson on the

hip, I think, then just flicks up against his arm. Mike Dean quite

right not to give anything there. Four wins and four draws so far at

home for Everton this season. Everton have a corner. It's the

first corner of the game. Good chance perhaps for Everton to

ask one or two questions of the neighbours from across the park.

Cursing himself that he couldn't get it on target. Intensity, endeavour,

but so far, no end product to match. Mane goes for the overhead kick.

Clyne has a shot blocked. Suddenly, Everton have their backs against the

wall for a moment. Juergen Klopp's team pressing for

the opening goal. The intensity has gone up a notch or two at the start

of the second half. Liverpool have started the better of the two.

Firmino almost in. Stekelenburg with a vital stop.

Ronald Koeman's team performed well in the first half without really

creating anything. Leighton Baines couldn't take any

chance there's. He's ended up on the ground, both he and Maarten

Stekelenburg. It's a collision around the right hip area with

Leighton Baines here. Baines totally committed. Made sure that he got

there first. You can see there the right thigh of the goalkeeper taking

the full force of that collision. Maarten Stekelenburg forced to limp

from the field of play. After that fortunate collision with his

captain, Leighton Baines. Joel Robles on for Everton.

Henderson was caught there. Mike Dean reaches straight for his card.

Ross Barkley is going in the book. Tempers raised. Yellow card for Ross

Barkley. Henderson on the ground and Lovren and Lukaku at it. Milner

doing his best peace keeping efforts. And suddenly, a thick et of

players around where the incident took place. Here's the challenge by

Ross Barkley coming up now. Oh, that's a horrendous challenge by

Ross Barkley, absolutely horrendous. That could have ended Henderson's

season. He's lucky it's only yellow. That was a dreadful tackle.

The header from Williams gathered by Mignolet. He's been largely

untroubled in this match, Simon Mignolet. First shot on target from

Everton. Just 15 minutes to go. Lennon was always favourite for that

one. He wins a corner. Daniel Sturridge

preparing to come on for Liverpool as well, for a ten-minute cameo at

the end. Oh, what a great save by Robles.

Superb save. Liverpool so close to taking the lead. What a save by Joel

Robles. Look at this, a thunderous shot from Roberto Firmino. Great

stop from the substitute goalkeeper. That is why it's still goalless.

Here comes the board, eight minutes of added time.

Mignolet pouncing on the ball. He was totally surrounded there,

Lukaku. He still nearly found a way through.

Milner is on the near side, not in your picture at the moment. But

always available. Oh, it hit the post, oh, it was

followed up and into the back of the net by Sadio Mane, deep into added

time at the end of the game. Surely that's the goal that will win the

derby from Sadio Mane. What drama at Goodison Park. Here it is once more.

Daniel Sturridge kept looking, kept looking. He thought he saw an

opening. Nearly squeeze today home and Mane, who we -- squeezed it home

and Mane, who we know is quick out of the blocks, had the pace to get

to the ball first and slam it into the back of the Everton net. It

looks like Everton are going to have to wait a little longer to win a

Merseyside derby again. Fireworks on the pitch from Mane. Fireworks off

the field as well. There isn't much time for Ronald Koeman's team now to

recover from this very late punch in the stomach. Will this red sky at

night prove to be Liverpool's delight?

Oh, what a stew pen does block on the line by -- stupendous Black

Country on the line by -- block on the line by Coleman. Denied a second

goal by the visiting side. OK it was good, the atmosphere. It was a long,

long extra time. But of course, because of the injury of

Stekelenburg. Yeah, but again, we gave them no chance. That's a very

important thing. We had the chances and it's a deserved win, all good. I

know exactly how fast Sadio Mane is. He was reacting the fast player on

the pitch. OK, hits the post and it's coming back. OK we did not

deserve that goal. Because I think the team performance was

outstanding. I'm very happy to score the winning goal for the team. I

think the work rate of the team was great today. We deserved to win. It

was late. I'm good friends with Ross. I think he mistimed the

tackle. After the game he apop Issed. It was late. Thankfully, I'm

all right. It was just mistimed. You're going to get them in derby

games. It was a hard tackle. But I'd need to watch the clip to have

really an opinion about it's yellow or it's red. It was a hard tackle I

always have to say how it is. If you saw it, say how it was. If anybody

needs my say about this, I think the referee had a difficult game today,

Michael Dean did really well in this situation. Maybe Ross was really

lucky. We conceded a goal in extra time, eight minutes was difficult.

It was already difficult to keep one point till 95 minutes. The eight

minutes was killing for us. There were a lot of stoppages

though, you suffered injuries to key players as well Yeah, but OK, the

reason that maybe it was all about eight minutes, it was the injury of

the goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg. If it was really eight

minutes I don't know. It was a long time extra time.

STUDIO: I will have to talk to BBC management and ask them to stop

changing Match of the Day 2 tour Monday because whenever we get a

Monday night game it is not very good. Ronald Koeman described his

Everton side as outstanding. I think you two would go as far as saying

maybe for 45 minutes but not the second 45. The second 45 they showed

a real desire without the ball. They closed down in numbers. I thought as

a team, as a unit, they didn't really give too much away, they

forced a lot of errors out of Liverpool. They knew that Liverpool

are a pressing team as well and they had done it extremely well, the

first minute, the tackles, the second balls they won command the

tempo they played at. In the end I think they didn't produce in the

second half what they produced in the first half and they got the goal

late on. I thought the substitution with James McArthur hindered

Everton. You can see him flying in. The whole 45 minutes was like that,

Coleman here command they have that in the second half, they ran out of

steam. In the end it cost them. It was more the numbers around them,

the amount of time they get numbers around them, stopping them.

Liverpool boss McCourty in the final third in the first half was

extremely poor and that was down to Everton closing them down. I just

felt in the second-half Everton dropped too deep and they invited

the pressure to be brought against them, that's what I felt. Barry

missed the tackle there and they get in great space all over the pitch,

Wijnaldum is great getting out wide. The young lad dives in and they are

on the attack. That was their decision-making they were making. In

the end Apple Everton played well in the first half. It is your position,

central midfield, so when you are going into a game at that pace and

Eli coming on for the second half, is it difficult to get up to speed?

Very difficult, very difficult. Gareth Barry has been rested for the

last couple of weeks and James McCarthy has been playing well.

Their loss at half-time was key for them. It is difficult to come in but

they suffered in the second half, their energy had gone. Jurgen Klopp

questioned post match whether they could maintain that intensity,

proved that way with Everton and dropping and allowing that. You felt

as though the longer the game went on if one team would score it would

be Liverpool and that's because Everton dropped too deep. Which is

what happened, so take a look at the golf. A couple of things, Charlie

picked up on them, too much space. We highlighted in the first half.

This is a great ball from Wijnaldum. Overall, the first half, Lennon and

Valencia did a good job tracking the full-backs. The Stan Leonard gives

the full-back too much space and he rolls it into Sturridge who dribbles

across the box. Not a great effort but the reaction of Mane is

excellent, striker in form. Even getting into this position, it is

five against two in that position but two Liverpool players react

quicker than the Everton players. Funes Mori and Robles were in a

position to clear it. Mane is the one he wants to get into the box. I

don't think Robles does great, his reaction isn't great, it is a tame

shot and I don't think he reacts quick enough as well. I feel like I

praise David Priest, a former goalkeeper, on Twitter on every show

I'm on but he's very good to follow on goalkeeper's technique. I will

take your word for that! He said this evening Robles takes two steps

forward and then jump at the last minute. That's split-second makes a

difference, it came off the post and Mane has the striker's instinct and

gets the golf. Mane's reaction was excellent. Do overall view

Liverpool, three clean sheets in their last four away games. Bay-side

Web pundits have told me this season with their defence they will have to

score three or four every time to win but they seem to have turned it

around away from home barring the game at Bournemouth. They do and it

is one of them they knew what Everton would do, they would come

flying out of the blocks. It was 15 minutes before they got an effort on

goal. They sat in and got the goal in the end. But they will be

delighted with that, it is a tough place to go, Everton. That's the way

it is with Liverpool teams, we look at them so often and you think, can

they stop teams scoring? Everton didn't do an awful lot. It was the

Ashley Williams header that was the only attempt on target they had.

Liverpool, yes, on that side of it, but I feel from both sides there

wasn't a lot of quality in the game. I'm assuming you both agree on the

Ross Barkley challenge that Jurgen Klopp spoke about? Jordan Henderson

was very forgiving in his post-match interview. Do you both think that

was a red card? I think it is a red card and it's not a great challenge.

You can see Klopp and his reaction to it. It is not a great tackle. The

referee has dealt with it in the way he should deal with it. It is

horrendous. He is lucky, so Lucky, lucky from two sides, lucky he

didn't get the red card but also lucky that Jordan Henderson didn't

suffer a serious injury because he rocked his ankle and fortunately

there is no serious injury to Henderson but that should have been

a red card. You could see from Klopp's reaction, he was very

worried. He thinks it is a bad one and fair play to Jordan, he gets up

and gets on with it. On to yesterday's matches and a meeting of

Manchester City and Arsenal, two teams desperate to keep within

striking distance of the leaders Chelsea. Steve Bower was at the

Etihad. COMMENTATOR: Project pep has rarely

been dull so far, both Man City and Arsenal are aware the title race

could be if they don't stay close enough on Chelsea's Trail. The City

boss makes two changes to the team that returned to winning ways

against Watford were Ilkay Gundogan suffered an injury to put him out

for the season and Fernando his replacement in midfield while Sane

is preferred to Nolito. Guardiola names and unchanged defence for the

first time in the Premier League. One alteration to the Arsenal team

beaten by Everton, Alex Iwobi is preferred to Alex Ed Chaimberlain.

Top scorer Alexis Sanchez, signed by Guardiola for Barcelona, has six

goals in last four games. A matchup of real significance at the top of

the Premier League. Arsenal unbeaten in their last six against Manchester

City in all competitions. Space for Silva, Sane available, Sterling has

made a run, that is who he is looking for, and it almost came to

him as well. Encouraging for Manchester City. Uncomfortable for

Arsenal. They are now on the attack with Bellerin. Sanchez, lovely

reverse ball. Walcott! 1-0 Arsenal inside five minutes, his fourth goal

in four games against Manchester City. A devastating break and Theo

Walcott gives Arsenal the lead. Pep Guardiola's defends undone again.

Sanchez has scored 14 goals this season. He created this one with

that brilliant pass and Walcott kept his cool, retained his composure,

and rolled it past Claudio Bravo. His 11th goal in all competitions

this season. It is first blood Arsenal, Manchester City 0-1

Arsenal. It was never going to be 0-0. There has only been four of

them in 38 Premier League meetings, and that will now be three clean

sheets I believe in 17 Premier League games for Manchester City

under Pep Guardiola. I should point out that Arsenal have gone 11 games

without keeping a clean sheet. Gael Clichy into De Bruyne, Sterling has

made the run, here he is! What a chance for an immediate response

from Manchester City. Raheem Sterling being asked to lead the

line, who has gone 12 games without scoring, onside with a golden chance

to make it 1-1. Totally free, totally unmarked. Manchester City

should have been level. Easy to say. Sergio Aguero would have put that

away. He hasn't enjoyed recent trips to the City, one win in the last 12

Premier League visits to Manchester, that was here, though, January 2000

2-0 victory. Coquelin. Here is Walcott. They are streaming forward

in numbers, Arsenal. Ozil. Iwobi. Here comes Ozil. Zabaleta in the

way. Arsenal corner. Their first of the game. Short to Iwobi. He has

picked at Monreal. Kolarov did not get there. It was half a chance.

Kolarov expected to make this header. Theo Walcott just got his

angles wrong. The last time Arsene Wenger faced a Pep Guardiola side

Arsenal lost 5- 02 Bayern Munich in the Champions League. They are in

front here at the moment. Good flick from Ozil. Walcott. Sanchez is the

obvious target inside him. Here he is. He's got Iwobi to his left.

Iwobi's cross. Bellerin! Always rising, but Arsenal do look such a

threat on the break. Sanchez couldn't quite get it out from under

his feet. Ozil improvised. Bellerin, who has only ever scored three goals

for Arsenal, saw that fly over the crossbar. The first of five games in

19 days for Manchester City. Sterling to Silva, up towards Sane

who is onside, and he's levelled it. Leroy Sane with his first Manchester

City goal less than two minutes into the second half to bring them level.

Just the start to the second period they wanted. Well, this is a big

call for Adam Milne, the referee's assistant who is looking down the

line. That looks as though Sane is just off, but once the flag was

raised Sane did the most important thing in scoring his first City

goal. Crucial goal for a City, 1-1, game on. When Arsene Wenger sees

that again I'm sure he will have something to say. The worst possible

start to the second half for his team. Here is Sanchez for Arsenal.

Walcott. Ozil easily dispossessed by Silva, who is then rocked by Sanchez

and then a fair challenge by Fernando. This is De Bruyne, into

Sunday. -- Sane. Denied by Cech, terrific football from Manchester

City, untidy from Arsenal. Great run from Sunday, he was onside that time

and Cech made the save you would expect him to make. Adrian Leary and

Pat Rice, Arsenal legends, watching on. Yaya Toure. Sterling's cross,

cleared by Monreal, not too convincingly, though. Silva. De

Bruyne. Bodies on the edge of the penalty area. In towards Silva,

cleared by Xhaka. De Bruyne. Good effort. Petr Cech needed to make

sure. Not particularly powerful from De Bruyne but it took a deflection

and it was heading in. Decent stop from Cech. Arsenal haven't been in

the same groove in the second half. They were rocked by the early goal

at the start of it. Manchester City tales have been up ever since. De

Bruyne. What a ball that is. Into the path of Sterling. -- tails. Is

there anything at the end of it? Up against Monreal. Still Sterling!

Quite brilliant! After 12 games without a goal, Raheem Sterling

might have scored a hugely significant one. Fabulous finish

aided by a wonderful ball from De Bruyne, who quite rightly receives

the adulation as well. Just look at this pass from the Belgian. The

vision, the weight of it. Having said that, Sterling still had plenty

to do. He missed that golden chance in the first half and he beat Cech

at his near post in the second. It's his sixth goal of the season and

Arsenal, having led by 1-0 inside the first five minutes, now trailed

2-1. What a turnaround from his team. And he knows how important

that goal could be. Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal. Sterling cuts inside

here. Just watch Silva. He's in an offside position. Does he make an

attempt to get the ball to put Cech off? His leg is out. You would have

to say it would be harsh to determine he was interfering with

play there. Here is Silva, Navas to his right. Here is Navas with his

first touch. Could it be an assist? It is off the post. What an

introduction that nearly was from Navas. Arsenal switched off again.

Silva new Navas was available, drove it across, De Bruyne's outstretched

leg almost finished it. Bellerin. Arsenal free kick. Yellow card for

Fernando. It is one he will take at this stage. Arsenal will have one

last chance for Ozil to throw this in. Cech takes it to Ozil. There

isn't time. It's a victory for Manchester City, their second of the

week, and it could be a hugely significant one. It is back-to-back

away defeats for Arsenal in a week, the first time that has happened

since April 2014. Raheem Sterling the matchwinner, Manchester City 2-1

Arsenal. It was a good game. Today we won. We

dominate. We create the chances. You have lots of problems. We have

important players for a long time. The guys give absolutely everything

every game. That's why I'm so happy to be their coach. It was a great

team performance. We were disappointed to go behind in the

first half. The manager said just stay in there, we would definitely

get chances. Today we got the three points I thought we deserved. It's

not what I would like to play, but it's not easy, high pressing from

Arsenal is really good. After they defend, compact, block deep. But we

did it. That's why I was so happy. We had a very good first half. There

was room to score a second goal in the first half. In the second half,

on top of that, in the two games, the decisions went really against

us. Today we conceded two offside goals and that is difficult to

accept in a game like that. I believe there's a lot going on at

the moment that is not serious and it's unbelievable. But every time

when we go into games like that, you have to come out and say the

decisions go against you and only laterally. Let's start with those

decisions. The two offside goals as Arsene Wenger called them. The first

one is offside. It's only just. It's extremely tight. He's moving at such

pace. But he is offside. It's a great turn of pace from Sane. No,

it's definitely offside. He does the business. That's hard for the

linesman, though. Hard, the pace they're going at it's difficult.

What a pass this is from De Bruyne. Like you at your peak! That is world

class. Some might say he is still at his peak! He backs off and allows

Sterling in the box. It's a goal, not offside. He's too far away from

the ball. I don't think he's influenced Petr Cech. He's too far

away. This is the angle. This is the one you can see it clearly how far

he is away from Petr Cech. Three yards from the ball. He is. I don't

think he's had any influence there at all. Monreal has got to get

quicker to Sterling. The role is clearly attempting to play a ball

close to him, when this action impacts on an opponent, then he

would be given offside. You are saying it doesn't impact the

opponent. No, not at all. There were various players we could have picked

out, particularly for their second half performance. We will look at

Sane as his contribution for the whole game. In the first half of the

game, when I think City in the first half weren't great going forward. He

was a constant menace. Try to have an influence on the game. He's still

a young kid, 20 years of age. I never seen much of him, a bit of him

at the European Championships, but he's come in and only seven starts

this season. He seems to be a good player. He'll do well for them.

Second half as well. Turn of pace! Out to the left-wing second half, De

Bruyne through the middle and Sterling on the right. That changed

everything for City going forward. The movement is excellent. Prepared

to go beyond defenders when De Bruyne goes to the outside. Great

awareness about him. Just quality. He's got an excellent turn of pace.

Pass is not the greatest, but he gets away with it. He was excellent

in the second half. Flashes from him yesterday to suggest why that

money's been paid for him. Did you see more of a solid Manchester City,

kept the same back four that he had in the previous game as well. Was

there greater solidity to them? Yaya is in there. He's a big presence. I

think Ozil tried to go by him and he bullied him out of the way. They

need that type of presence. For Arsenal, could you say about Arsenal

what you said about Everton, good first half, not second? Arsenal were

so good without the ball on Sunday. I thought they had a really good

shape to the side. They carried a threat going forward. Those two in

particular with Sanchez and Ozil they were very good. Especially last

week at the Emirates, they looked for each other so much, the

combination play is quality. They're top players. The contrast was the

second half. There was no real out ball for them. The shape of the side

was quite poor. Sanchez again, he was the one they were looking for to

get him into the game. This is not like Arsenal giving it away cheaply.

It was the players' reaction as well. When they give the ball away,

static, no reaction from the three Arsenal players there, being

prepared to get back goal side. He could have scored there. Did they

get deeper and deeper in the second half? In the first half, they

started the game on the front foot. They went right at City. They got

the goal. They had that luxury of sitting deep. They had a threat

going forward. Second half, they sat off deep but they didn't penetrate.

They didn't close City players down. Ozil was a total passenger in the

second half. It's easy to criticise Ozil. People are looking for that

already. If there other aspects of this Arsenal team that aren't

working, you highlighted two or three players. Totally. If the

defence was dropping deeper and the space between defence and midfield

and attack were greater, he's very easy to criticise. He's a quality

player, but because that other side of his game is not one of his

strengths, it is difficult. He's the one that gets singled out because

Sanchez does so much work for the team. People compare them. But it's

not just him. There is another 10 players out there. I think the

energy had gone. Is work rate the important thing? Of course, it

should be. Your quality then will shine through. Some players have

better quality than others. First and foremost, your work rate is what

you should give no matter what. I was just thinking, you mentioned

there, it was the same sort of performance as Everton at Goodison

last Tuesday. Similar performance, first half dominant, then second

half no momentum, looking very tired. Without the ball they were

very, very poor in the second half. Do you give them a bit of leeway in

the fact they've begun to Everton and Manchester City in the last two

games. I know a lot of Arsenal fans think the world has fallen in over

the last week. They've had two very difficult away games. No. OK,

excellent. Right, we don't pay you buy the word. Next to Bournemouth

against Southampton. Commentary from Steve Wilson.

COMMENTATOR: 30 miles apart but level on points. This is not your

regular derby. It's so irregular that Bournemouth and Southampton

didn't face each other at all in a league game from 1960 to 2010. Eddie

Howe's Bournemouth have lost only one of the last seven at home.

It's a corner to Southampton. He'll need a bigger bit of paper, I think.

The first corner was interesting. Boruc dealt with. It you can see

from his position there, that he is inviting a ball into the near post.

The angle has gone away from him. But he has support.

Good ball - in! Nathan Ake for Bournemouth. Only five minutes

played and another important goal for Bournemouth It's a lovely ball

into the box and Ake hurled himself at it. Jack Wilshere looked up.

Delivered it beautifully. He's definitely onside. He does ever so

well, Ake to get himself in front of the defender.

Forster just about did enough. Not without a bit of help from lady luck

here, the Southampton goalkeeper. Scores! Excellent response from Ryan

Bertrand. That is a really, really good goal by Southampton's left

back. Great open start to this game. Only 13 minutes played. He really

caught that. Inside Smith. Around Francis. Saw that corner and got it

absolutely bang on! This is a great finish. Look at where that goes into

the net. Right into the side netting.

Oh, a real chance. Real chance for Redmond.

He knows it. A really good opportunity this.

Davis immediately into the action. Francis has given it to Redmond.

Couldn't finish. Ake made it hard. Boruc made the save. They're

fortunate. It's a real chance for Redmond. He might have done more.

Neat little dink finish and into the back of the net from Jay Rodriguez.

Southampton are in front. Jay Rodriguez gets the goal. It might

well have been going in any way from Davis. But the substitute right at

the heart of this, whether he got the goal or not, the back heel into

him is nice. It's a cute little dink from Davis. But it is a Rodriguez

goal and it is Bournemouth 1, Southampton 2.

Good save by Boruc. Then it deflected back towards Ake.

This was a funny one really. Persistence from Jay Rodriguez got

him in behind Steve Cook. It's a good save by Boruc. Ake almost on

the line. Tadic to avoid beer, Redmond going

for the curl and he wasn't far away. This was a really good effort, just

one thing in his mind, he decided early on he would go for goal. --

Hojbjerg. Redmond. Rodriguez. Good hit, great goal. Great goal by Jay

Rodriguez for Southampton has surely won this derby. That is a goal

worthy of winning any game. Outstanding, explosive, decisive

finish from Jay Rodriguez. That is a peach. Redmond did well. Rodriguez

Diaz brilliantly. Tough to hit it more sweetly than that. And for a

player who has been dogged by such injuries, what a great moment for

Jay Rodriguez. This must feel like a significant

day, you've scored goals and played matches since your injury but that

was a statement today. Thank you. It is nice to be part of the team in

scoring and feeling sharp and working hard in the game, the most

important thing for a player. For me it is a great feeling, and I'm

buzzing. I thought we were not at our best levels today, physically

and technically we did not play as well as we have in recent weeks.

Credit to Southampton and they deserved to win today and we were

not quite right. Southampton made six changes and you only made one.

Was that part of the reason for the sluggishness in the game? On

reviewing it, from my perspective, something I have to do, we have not

responded well in the third game in eight days, we were not well

physically from the off even when we scored. To something I will reflect

on. Are you confident you can give Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk?

Always I have confidence in all of those players in my squad because

it's important to continue with the squad to develop all of the players.

It is not normal to change teams every three days, some people think,

but it's important to keep a good energy and intensity in our games.

Playing every three days it's a possibility because all the players

are at a good level and this is important for the future of

Southampton. Let's start with Southampton. Jay

Rodriguez in particular. You at Stoke played Southampton on

Wednesday night, you are down to ten men for a lot of the game, you

thought they were different in their approach in this game to how they

were when they played youth. They seemed to stretch the game a bit

more against Bournemouth than they did against us, Lorna Macrae came up

front and we never really got stretched as we thought we would.

Rodriguez has come in -- Long. He turned him, and they got confidence

from that and that probably stretched the game. When we played

them in midweek they just played in front of us and never really hurt us

and that is why we got a point, we worked really hard. Rodriguez gives

you that option, he has quality and can come to the ball but he wants to

go in behind. He can do both because of his size and speed. He does and

he has had a horrendous time with injury but it is good to see him

back because he is a nice guy. This is quality from Davis, getting the

little dink in command his reaction to read it and finish the goal, he

did extremely well. He got rewarded with a one-day strike. Boruc

probably never expected him to hit it so early and that is why he got

that strike away. He deserves that round of applause. The reaction from

the bench says it all. It shows what he means to the team, he's had a

horrendous time with injury, so for him to come back, that is a great

reaction from the bench. Charlie Austin is out with a dislocated

shoulder, would you say they have three different types of striker in

Austin Rodriguez and Long. I would, Shane Long is a player that can hurt

you with his pace but Rodriguez can give you a bit of both, certainly a

player that can run off defenders' shoulders too. As we heard in the

interviews, Southampton made six changes and Eddie Howe made one, and

he said he might have to review the way he makes his changes. Is it hard

from iPlayer's perspective? The Premier League is that demanding, it

is difficult. Mentally more than physically, or both? I think both

but our manager made changes to freshen it up. Other managers have

done the same. Obviously they only made one change and it may have cost

them the game. But like you say, he will look at it and he won't do it

again. Tottenham against Burnley pitted a team who were unbeaten at

home against a side who have taken just one point on their travels this

talking about Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool and

nobody has been talking about Tottenham recently. Is it good for

you they have forgotten about you? Yes, no problem, and then we need to

follow our way. I think it is good to be close. Today it is impossible

to achieve anything but Winnie to fight until the end of the season. I

think we are in a good position, we are very calm and only working hard

in that way and trying to win games. They are a top side. But we do need

the rub of the green. It is a big debate lately, certainly from me,

but if you look at my players' reaction to a clear sending-off he

gets up. If he does 14 rolls on the floor the referee will see it. I

don't know how we change this because it is a clear sending-off

and been then sets up their goal so I will be bound to be disappointed

for our players and fans who travelled here because I thought we

deserved something. You are mumbling away. He is right. If Stephen Ward

went down rolling around, jumping around and waving his hand that

would influence Kevin Friend. I think if Kevin Friend sees it like

he does he gives a yellow card and if he sees it as he should have,

because if Stephen Ward's leg was planted, it was a serious injury. He

was pulling out of the challenge but it's the action going towards the

ball. He is pulling away from it, he knows what he's doing, it is a

the season. I would say that was the best performance against us. They

have taken time to warm up but they will be there or thereabouts by the

end of the season. Onto the best of Saturday's action and part one

time to go in the first half. That is far too simple a goal for Chelsea

to score. It's just knocked up and Costa simply heads it into the
