FIFA World Club Cup Final Match of the Day

Good morning, it has been a roller- coaster 12 months for Chelsea, but

if they win the final, they will end the year as world club

champions. Something that was unthinkable back in March. That was

the month when the manager was sacked and the club was in disarray.

Roberto di Matteo has been appointed interim manager. Under

him, they regrouped and went on to lift the FA Cup and Champions

League in a dramatic fashion. Chelsea are champions of Europe!

They started this season in fine style, but early exit from the

Champions League saw Roberto di Matteo lose his job and Rafael

Benitez have pointed to a mixed reception. After a difficult start,

Chelsea have won their last three matches and looked in fine form

against Monterrey in the semi- finals. Their opponents Corinthians

won the competition in 2000, beating a fellow Brazilian team and

a final. They will have plenty of support in Japan for the game and

they brushed aside Al Ahly, the African champions in their semi-

final on Wednesday. The Europeans have won the trophy the last five

times, can Chelsea make it six? Welcome. I am joined by Pat Nevin

and Robbie Savage. Rafa Benitez could win a first trophy as interim

manager, less than a month in charge. The Corinthians, the South

Americans, who take the tournament seriously. Not just the South

Americans, everybody else in the world apart from the Europeans take

it seriously. He would like to come back with the trophy and anything

he could do to make the Chelsea fans love him that little bits more

would be really good. They were impressive in the semi-final.

Especially with David Luiz in midfield. Possibly making changes

today. I thought it was an attacking team. I think he will

revert to the Rafa Benitez way, with more defensive mind today.

you think that Chelsea are favourites? Very much favour at. I

have watched Corinthians and thought there is not one man in

their team that man would buy. I think he is comfortable in the job.

Understandably, he was looking nervous and shell-shocked, in some

ways, but he has grown into it. Time with the players in Japan, he

gets to know them personally and not just for their capabilities and

footballers, but as people. You need to get to know them as people.

That happens on tour. And being brought in possibly to get the best

out of Fernando Torres. Five goals in three games, E he is getting

back to his self. -- his old self-. Technically, as a footballer, I do

not think he has been the greatest. We have the pace which she has lost.

Keep it simple, which she has been doing. You will never stop a good

striker on the ball. When he finishes well, look at this season.

Everything he finishes with one touch looks good. There are three

changes that Rafa Benitez has made changes that Rafa Benitez has made

Luiz was the holding midfield player and he is now beside Gary

would keep him. For the experience. In recent times, you have seen John

Terry missing, Lampard missing. That is the time they need to look

at those people. And the captaincy? Rafa Benitez will also have that

about him. He will do something unusual. When everybody has written

off Frank Lampard. Lots of pictures of him walking about moping in the

training ground, suddenly he is captain in central midfield. It

annoys people sometimes and I think he enjoys that. I would have loved

to have seen David Luiz keep this place. Azpilicueta was the weak

link in that game. I can see why he has moved to right-back. It is the

fourth time an English side has contested the Cup, with one win to

contested the Cup, with one win to contested the Cup, with one win to

date. Manchester United took part in a

tournament to be forgotten. The European champions went out in the

group stage -- stage. Liverpool last in the final five years later

get into the final and you are Barcelona, you would take it

seriously. If you have South American players, you will take it

seriously. They want to win the competition, as David Luiz said.

You want to see the best teams to win it. The bigger names to score,

no better example the last time. Barcelona. The two goals, Lionel

Messi is a genius. Watch this as he went around the keeper. That was

like Pat Nevin! It is impossibly quick. The best player you have

seen? It hurts me to say it because I admired the ability of Maradona

and the personality of Pele. Chelsea, it would be fantastic to

win this trophy. Chelsea fans are hurting because they have gone out

of the Champions League so early. They are the champions of Europe,

but it is hurting them already. But in 90 minutes, it would help if

they could say they are champions they could say they are champions

they could say they are champions of the world.

We can go over to the stadium. The atmosphere in Yokohama is building.

The Chelsea team are on the pitch. I am joined by Henry winter from

the Telegraph. A showcase final. Both teams will want to win. What

beast would this give Chelsea, winning tonight? It is like being

in downtown Sao Paulo. It is a big night. They have come under

criticism since dropping out of the Champions League and Rafa Benitez

is not popular among the fans. If he could return to Stamford Bridge

with them as champions of the world there might be forgiveness. Rafa

Benitez likes a final. A chance to pit his wits against another team.

12 finals in eight years. Remember the great nights in Istanbul and

afternoons in Cardiff when he can outwit another manager. This is a

big test. It is a good team with players like Danilo and Paulinho,

who want to impress the European audience. Frank Lampard is back.

What game can we expect from Chelsea? We saw high-tempo against

Monterrey. If you look at Corinthians, they are defensively

sound and light to hit on the counter. Chelsea will have a lot of

possession. Moses, he is playing and Juan Mata, he is having a

fantastic season and also Fernando Torres, as well. It is building in

Yokohama. 20,000 Corinthians fans, and it feels like a lot more. Back

to the studio. We can hear from the Chelsea

manager who could win his first I was waiting for a top side and

then you have this chance. We will see what happens. You can be in a

team in the middle of the table and have a job guarantee and everybody

will say you are fantastic, and you can be ten years winning nothing.

In this club, in six months, you could win three or four trophies.

This is a top side already. It has won trophies. You can improve the

team. You can create something if you have time. In football, you

never know now. It could be three years, three months, but you have

to do your job every day, thinking how to improve the team. I think

every time, every day, every week, maybe the number of fans will

change. It is easy to say fans now, but, after the improvement of the

team, the way we play and the style we have, a lot of fans will say,

maybe we were too hard and we will have to give him the chance to

bring the confidence back to the team. I am sure that the fans want

us to win. My idea is clear. I want to win every game, the fans want to

win every game. When I decided to come, I knew I was signing a

contract of six or seven months and I was not thinking about in the

future, after this seven months. It is football. You never know.

Everybody is talking. You never know, the question for me, I know

football depends on the time. If we are winning the Champions League,

best in the world, and he has a fantastic record, we will see if he

comes, and if we have won a lot of trade is, I will be pleased anyway.

to settle down. I am sure they will do well because they have quality.

The players who are getting older, you have to change some of them.

How many can you change? How long can they play? It depends on

individuals. When you see one of your players, it does not matter

is working hard like the rest of the team. Creating more chances

said that he can score more goals. We have changed two or three things,

a question of time. Playing games is always more difficult, but the

way we are coaching him, we are trying to improve his fitness. It

will be an advantage for him. He has the believe he can continue

scoring goals and that is good for To win a trophy is important. In

this case, it is my third final. If you are in the final, you have to

win the final. It will be important because the Corinthians are a tough

team to play. They are a well organised team, they have some good

players. Tactically is not easy to approach the game because they are

strong and they are well organised. You have to have players and have

confidence in your team. He has got a great record when it comes to

finals. He is looking for his 9th victory in 12 finals. It should be

sensational. Some of them he has walked into and fallen into. This

one he has fallen into, other than the semi-final. It is odd looking

at him and listening to him speaking, it is his demeanour that

jumps out at me. He is not exactly apologetic, but he is not very

philosophical. He is very friendly, almost somebody who wants to be

liked. That is what he is trying to break through wore that anything

else. The fact that maybe some of the Chelsea fans are softening a

bit towards him. That might help, but what helps his winning games

and winning trophies, nothing else. He has had six games in charge at

Stamford Bridge, what do you make of his record? It is decent. He has

had a couple of draws. And the semi-final against Monterey was

good. The performance at West Ham was offal, especially in the second

half, but in the first half they could have been three or a four up.

He is slowly getting to grips with the situation and the players with

him. I think he is a fantastic manager. If Chelsea were to employ

him on a full-time basis, I think he is a fantastic manager. Pat.

he is growing on me all the time. It should matter in the longer term.

He is a good manager. He cannot stop tweaking and changing. To date

I came into the studio looking at the midfield. There are four

different ways we can explain it, but he moved them back and that is

typical of him. He keeps them on their toes. That can be a good

thing or a bad thing. If you are playing really well, three or a

four games in a row, and you have a great run and you are dropped. For

goodness sake. It you have just come into hear Pat talk about the

teams, let's reiterate what Rafael Benitez has gone for in the final.

Corinthians might do it back against them. They are not the most

artistic team you have seen out of Brazil, but they might try a little

bit of that themselves. You have both seen Corinthians in this

tournament. This is the team Tite has gone with. What you think of

that? Rafts will be the one that gets a little bit forward. He gets

a lot of phrase. He flattered to deceive. -- Ralf. I was not sure

about him. He had one fantastic chance, but other than that he did

not do very much. To be fair, I was expecting a lot more from him, and

there were better performances. The goalscorer looks like quite a

natural goalscorer. He will take them. He is not a Brazilian player.

The ball into the box was too high. It was terrific technique, but the

keeper could have come for it. To generate the power was fantastic.

He was their best player for me on the night. I thought Alessandro was

extraordinary. One of the right backs from Brazil. We have full-

backs, but how many actually think they are centre-forwards as well.

It is a bit like the David Luiz syndrome. Normally they would want

to play it wide. That is not very subtle and sophisticated, that is

the board does a method. When he gets the ball, he goes forward. He

keeps ongoing. By the way, I think I will keep ongoing. He goes all

the way into the box. That is where he is aiming, he is a full-back. I

like him. However, he is also their weakness. Just like every other

full-back from Brazil he cannot defend. He gets himself lost a

little bit and he is not the best on the ball. When he is defending

he looks as if he is carrying a pie and a board to too much as well. --

a pound too much. Predictions. got a lot of stick off the

Corinthian fans want Twitter. I think Chelsea will win it. They are

the better team and they have got the better players. I think Chelsea.

I would love Chelsea to get an early goal because it would open

the game up. Let's hope so. It is time for the club world final,

club football team. That might sound more grand than it is, but

from David Luiz. We will give him credit for that. But not for that.

I think Emerson unclipped his ankle a little bit. Rafael Benitez is

they have started the game. Very aggressive and they have recovered

well and they have not given the ball away. Tite was pretty bullish
