FIFA World Club Cup Semi Final 2 Highlights Match of the Day

Good afternoon. Welcome to the Club World Cup. Highlights of Chelsea's

semi-final against Monterrey to come, with the blues looking to add

the world title to the Champions League title they won so

I don't think I have ever seen an English team beat a German team on

penalties. He has done it! Chelsea are

champions of Europe! Big names came and went in the

summer, with the new signings promising much. Beautifully done. A

sensational goal. It but they failed to deliver when it counted

most. Chelsea have been well beaten here

by the Italian champions. And lo, he arrived. Rafa Benitez,

not the special one, but more like the only one.

And a turning fortunes followed - eventually. -- and up 10 in

With me in the studio this afternoon is Pat Nevin and Robbie

Savage. We will get their thoughts after we have seen the game itself.

From Yokohama, Japan, here are your Welcome to Chelsea's debut in the

Club World Cup. The first thing to say is that they definitely do not

keen to see whether the champions of Europe can, as expected, get

your views on this competition and how it has been taken by English

Did they play within themselves, Robbie? Yeah. They were cruising.

They made mistakes in the second half. But there were a lot of

positives. Torres got another goal. He has been given the goal. He has

got a bit to do, but yes, lots of positive.

Movement was one of the positive. Also the understanding of each

other's play. There were little dummies and back flicks between

dummies and back flicks between Chelsea. This is lovely. It is a

Brazilian style. What good vision again by Ashley Cole. When they

start working together as a group, the three amigos, who we should not

speak about because they are a speak about because they are a

lexicon side! But going forward, they look very nice.

Take us through the second goal, Robbie. It is being claimed by

Fernando Torres. It comes straight from kick off.

start the half quickly. The burst of pace from Hazard was good. He

has got a bit of luck, but to be fair, he is doing better under

Benitez. That his five goals in three games. A great finish.

That is how he gets his space. You can see the gap around him are. The

fewer touches he takes, the better player he is. The Spanish players

like to get the ball and run somewhere. Fernando is not one of

them. We will explore that a bit more.

The third goal was set up by the Spanish striker. It was a fantastic

goal with the outside of the foot. There you go. It is fantastic. The

belief that you are playing with good players who will get the ball

- that is what they did. Robbie, you spotted a bad touch?

This ball, just in front of the goalkeeper and behind the back four,

there's glimpses of brilliance again from Torres today. Isn't that

classic of the striker? They know where they want the ball to be

played. They play it because it is the ball they want. It is good to

see Torres getting that. We spoke about cruise control.

Maybe they took their eye off the ball slightly, which is how they

let mata racecourse in the final few moments. -- let Monterrey it

score. I think Cahill thinks about going

out and then follows the man. He knows he has made a mistake. He is

the deepest man. It is a problem of the whole defence. It is not a

straight line, that back four. Exactly. Sometimes it is John Terry

in there, but in the end, he just switched off. Other players did it

during the game. You have got to scream at Cahill to

get across. He has got to shut the ball down quicker.

Let's highlight a few of the Chelsea players for you. We will

start with David Luiz. I will be open about this and telly

that he is one of my favourite players. -- and tell you. This is

the position I think he should be playing. He goes forward from that

area. He has got the vision to look forward. As soon as he gets the

ball, he moves forward. That is what Benitez wants, that is what

Torres once, and maybe it is what ball. He plays it forward. Once

again there, there's no Chelsea player who... Ramires can do it,

but he is not good at holding the ball. That is not a centre-back, to

be fair. His weakness is that he loses concentration now and again.

He will always have that. But you can do that if you are in the

centre of midfield because you have got somebody behind you. Do it at

centre-back, and you lose the ball. I think he adds something more than

just a sitting defensive player. The big thing is when he is centre

half, alongside John Terry, for instance, and makes those runs, he

has John Terry at the back. In that position, he has to centre halves

behind him and he can take a chance. -- two centre halves. For me, what

today public evidence, he has been fantastic.

Will he used the ball better for Chelsea, better than Mikel and

Ramires? After Lampard, is he the best passer in the Chelsea

midfield? He is a player who has got enough

vision to pick out a pass. He is pushing it a bit. I think he could

be one of the best in the world. The other advantage was in the

first half, Gary Cahill went on they run forward and David Luiz

just slotted back into defence to cover. He has got the defensive

nous as well. nous as well.

That is his best position. Under Benitez, he will play there. That

is a massive plus for Chelsea. Let's look at Torres.

Let's look at Torres. We have seen the goal he scored.

Overall, how would you judge his performance, Rob?

He has moved on from the weekend. That left touch, he did not mean

that, that is the bad Torres. But the outside of the foot was the

good Torres. Here, he has not got the pace to get away. His first

touch here, yes, not the best ball, and the first touch is not great.

Is he going to get behind? He does nothing. He has a big decision to

make. He has to adapt. He has not got the pace he used to have. His

first catch -- touch is not the best. What he can do is he can

score goals in the penalty area. That is what he has got to do. He

That is what he has got to do. He has got to adapt. I think he is

doing that. He is not the first footballer to

get older. He is not the first to have to adapt to losing some pace

as they get older. Every player has to do that. The

ones who are lightning-fast, they don't have to change that much.

Technically when they lose pace, they are average players. But he

has got more than that - he is a finisher. As Robbie says, he has

got to hold it off and get it between the two sticks. He should

concentrate on that more than anything else.
