David Beckham's All Star Match for Children Match of the Day

Hello and welcome, 1 and all, to a rather rainy Old Trafford. We are

here today for David Beckham's All Star Match For Children, it will see

the former Manchester United midfielder take part in a Great

Britain and Ireland team managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, who returns to

Old Trafford as well. They will take on the Rest of the World XI looked

after by Carlo Ancelotti. They have built this game as an all-star

event, and with good reason. It is Beckham! Oh, it's in! Beckham has

scored for England. Giggs! Michael Owen for England! And he has

scored! Still Scholes. Oh, yes! Figo with a glorious ball. It is

Ronaldinho! Well, that is some of the stars you

will see on the pitch at Old Trafford in the game. David Beckham

himself has been on quite a journey to get here. I will let him tell you

all about it. It was about helping, you know, children all around the

world, seven different initiatives, seven different continents, and then

we came up with the idea of the game, or the games, so it was going

to be seven games in seven continents in seven days. Obviously,

physically, it wasn't possible to do it in seven days, but what we did do

is we did it in nine days and it was an incredible journey. It was a

journey which was exciting for a number of reasons. The reason we did

this is too obviously raise as much money for the fund as possible, for

Unicef as possible, but also to shine a light on the biggest and

most popular game in the world. And, you know, there have been certain

negative media coverage around football around the last year or two

and I just wanted to highlight just how great this game is and how it

brings people together. David Beckham knows a thing or two about

playing at Old Trafford, this man knows a thing or two about managing

here. What is it like being back here again? No comment. Don't stitch

me up! It is great, the lads, all of The Class of 92 are in there apart

from Gary and it has been good. Does it feel the same in the dressing

room? Has much changed? Well, there is no team talk, they are lucky that

way, Carragher and those said they would love to hear my team talk. And

those stars and the rest of the world side, if you were still in the

game, would you be tempted to poach a few? I tried back in the day, Figo

and Clive Bird, Cafu, fantastic player -- Patrick Kluivert. We

played Milan, he was 38 at the time and he must've covered 20 miles, up

and down the touchline all day, fantastic. They have some great

players and that is the attraction of today, they have represented a

great cause in Unicef and they have turned out in force for it. Enjoy

the game, lovely to see you back. So some big names out on the pitch

preparing to do the business but it is not just the sporting stars who

are here. The crowd were treated to a pre-match performance from

renowned classical tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Ladies and gentlemen, Andrei Bocelli! Time now, then, to join the

commentary per the game, Chris Waddle and Steve Bower. -- for the

game. Well, a warm welcome to Old Trafford

in Manchester for a very special day, the match for children,

organised by that man, David Beckham, back where it all began for

him in his illustrious career. The match the children providing

life-saving care, including protection, health and nutrition for

some of the world's most vulnerable children and some of the best

players in the world, and indeed managers, have turned up today to

support Beckham on the day. Sir Alex Ferguson, who gave him his

Manchester United debut, and Carlo Ancelotti, who was the manager in

David Beckham's very last game as a professional for Paris

Saint-Germain. Those two managers, who have won everything there is to

win between them, back at the Theatre of dreams in Manchester and,

in Alex Ferguson's case, back in a dugout at Old Trafford over two

years on from his retirement after a glittering career at Manchester

United. Well, the Great Britain and Ireland squad assembled have 93

Premier League titles between them. Amongst those two starting with

David Beckham former Manchester United team-mates Ryan Giggs, Nicky

Butt, Philip Neville and Darren Fletcher. John Terry, the man who

succeeded Beckham as England skipper, also starts. So many of the

world's best players in the last two decades are here. The rest of the

world party include two former player of the year winners. Luis

Figo, four times champion league winner Clarence Seedorf and the 2002

World Cup winner Ronaldinho -- Champions League winner. Before

kick-off, there will be a minute's silence to remember those who lost

their lives in the tragic events that unfolded in Paris yesterday.

WHISTLE. APPLAUSE.

Impeccably observed. Sir Alex Ferguson back in the dugout at Old

Trafford. It will be the Rest of the World, in their blue strip, to get

the game under way. Former strikers Patrick Kluivert and Legolas shar, 2

Champions League winners in their day, to begin proceedings -- Arleigh

Gunness shar -- Solskjaer. We had nestled dormer prior to kick-off,

that evoked memories for the former World Cup semifinalist Chris Waddle

behind me. I hate that song. No, I am joking. What an occasion disses,

a lot of talent, obviously not playing at the place we were used to

seeing them -- what an occasion this is. Good job I David Beckham to get

so much talent here. The first chair of the day for David

Beckham. Back at Old Trafford. He was saying prior to this that the

butterflies would be just as great walking out today as they were the

first time he did that, 21 years ago last month in a league cup tie here,

his old Trafford debut against Port Vale.

Another huge roar as Ryan Giggs marauders down the left-hand side,

the Manchester United assistant manager.

Cleared by Silvestre. And the first Paul Scholes volley of the day goes

over the bar. He has the technique to put that in the back of the net.

It has been a great start for the Great Britain and Ireland side, a

lot of touches. It comes out to Scholes, one thing in his mind. He

has got the technique but not on that occasion. The GB and Ireland

steam have three current Premier League players in their starting 11.

-- team. One of the current players, Darren

Fletcher, now with West Bromwich Albion.

You could see the intention, on that occasion, he didn't quite have the

execution to beat van der Saar. They are enjoying themselves, the GB and

Ireland steam. Van der Saar, great goalkeeper over the years, and very

tall. This match the children sold out in

less than four days. -- match for children. Ashley Cole into the

side netting. Not renowned for his goal-scoring. Great Britain and

Ireland dominating the game, as you would expect. Another good save by

van der Saar, tested low to his right. Ashley Cole will be

disappointed, he has Peter Crouch waiting for a tap in. It is a good

save, pushes it well away. Beckham finds Crouch. Onside. And

denied by van der Saar. Here comes Fletcher. Silvestre stops it on the

line. Peter Crouch should score, but van der Saar showing all his

experience. The Great Britain and Ireland team enjoying themselves.

Scholes arriving! like winding back the years.

Beckham's Cross, Scholes' header. We have seen that once or twice and it

has broken the deadlock, with the first goal of the afternoon, and

Paul Scholes finished it off. It has been coming. The number of times you

saw that ball coming in from David Beckham over the years. Scholes

knows he will hit the spot and gambles on the near post. Good

header, heads it down, van der Saar with no chance. Well, that was a

goal made and scored by the Manchester United youth team

originally, two players he gave his debuts two. Paul Scholes, who went

on to win 25 major honours in the game, gets the first goal of this

match for children. Scholes spoilt for choice. He has

chosen Giggs. He went for goal himself. Wasted opportunity, good

counterattack. Ryan Giggs with a smile on his face, trying to catch

the keeper out. He had options across the box.

Paul Scholes trying to bring it down. Flashes it over the bar. He is

on a mission today, he has the Number Ten role, really, he could

have had a hat-trick easily so far. Alex Ferguson has described Paul

Scholes as having the greatest football brain of anyone he has ever

worked with. Put out by Couto for a GB and

Ireland corner. All bar Ronaldinho back to defend this.

Jakes delivers it, Crouch got the first touch and then John Terry

couldn't find the target. Typical centre half. Unless it is on the

head, stay back. Once it hits the ground, you might as well start

running back. It is difficult, he it has bounced high and he tried to get

over it. Figo! Almost. It is the first good

opportunity they have created, the Rest of the World. Ronaldinho has

not really been on the wall at the root ball, great strength, great

lay-off and Figo tries to place it in the corner -- not really been on

the ball. What about that? It is a shame it

won't count, because the offside flag is up, but that was exquisite

from Ronaldinho. That is what you come to these games four, when his

name is on the team sheet. He is looking to the right, but Clive that

just drifts offside. -- Patrick Kluivert. It is a great finish and

unfortunately, he is offside. The old adage is, you cannot teach that.

Beckham is encouraged to shoot. Still no golden goal on his cold

day. -- golden day. He could have rolled outside, never troubled

football. If Great Britain and Ireland get a penalty, you won't

need to e-mail in who is taking it. Paul Scholes!

Crouch is offside, it won't count. Smart finish. But the flag was

already up. Yes, he was offside. The linesman sticks his flag up quickly,

he is a good two yards offside. It is a good finish. Went to two World

Cup finals with England. It is the last action of this first half of

the match the children and Great Britain and Ireland have the lead,

Edwin van der Saar has kept the score down but he was beaten after

13 minutes by Paul Scholes' header, delivered to him by David Beckham

right footed cross. Has been entertaining, but the Rest of the

World are hanging in there at half-time in the match for children

at Old Trafford it is 1-0. What has the first half been like

out there question mark the weather doesn't look the best. Well, I think

the weather is not the important thing today, the cause that we are

here for is the most important, after the difficult and hard day

that we had yesterday. So I think it is a pleasure for me to be part of

this game and try to raise as much fun is is possible for the kids. It

is like the old days, Neville back to Beckham, Beckham into Scholes,

and 1-0 Manchester United, or Great Britain and Ireland. You don't lose

that class, Scholes the has bad timing and Becks has the delivery.

-- has the timing. David Beckham has had a huge array of stars gathered

here, hasn't he? He deserves everything good, he is a fantastic

person and a very good friend and I am very happy for him.

Have you had a word with your players? You are the much busier

goalkeeper. They have much fitter line-up, it looks like a Premier

League team, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Darren Fletcher, those kind of

guys, they are cheating a little bit. Some things never change, Phil

Neville still getting in trouble not tracking back. Well, the legs aren't

what they used to be for all of us, so it is a much bigger pitch than I

can remember. We have had a substitution in terms of the

referee, Premier League official Anthony Taylor has replaced

Pierluigi Collina, the -- and changes on each side as well,

including both goalkeepers. David Seaman, former England and Arsenal

goalkeeper now playing for Great Britain and Ireland.

goalkeeper with his first save. He made that look easy, didn't he? He

didn't push it away. Great strike by Peter Crouch. Ronaldinho.

finding holes and pockets where he is picking the ball up. They are not

David Seaman who was caught off his line in the goal that took Brazil,

not England, noose those semi-finals. Here's Yorke who

captained Trinidad and toe bay goal at the World Cup. He got the Rest of

the World a free-kick. -- Tobago. Introducing Michael Owen to replace

Peter Crouch. Michael Owen who scored 40 times in 89 England

appearances. He was in the red where he was so successful for Liverpool.

Of course, he came on as a substitute in his best ever moment

in a Manchester United shirt at this ground to score a Derby Day winner

against Manchester City. Will it be the same result? Here comes

Ronaldinho. Couldn't test Seaman on that occasion. The conversation

continues. Not this time, he's saying! I think David Seaman had

that covered as well. Might have been over 13 years ago, but it's

still in their mind. Superb ball to Beckham.

Assessing the situation, David Beckham. He's looking for Scholes.

He's run. Then Owen. Michael Owen! 2-0. The former England teams

embrace. Michael Owen has a goal on his return to Old Trafford. Great

Britain and Ireland have doubled their advantage. I think Phil

Neville will have words with David Beckham. A 60-yard run on theover

lap. Wouldn't give him that. Picked Scholes up on the far-post. Good

pullback. Finish is a good finish. Pops up there. A good volley into

the net. Good touch by Scholes. Just can't get the flight of the ball. A

good finish by Michael Owen. Just look what it means to still win,

when given the opportunity, find the back of the net. 35-year-old gives

Great Britain and Ireland a two goal cushion. Here's Figo. Round Sol

Campbell. Dwight Yorke tried to give it him back. Figo still going.

Terrific block from Ashley Cole. It needed to be. Nearly a moment of

magic from Figo. Figo, this is what we used to see years and years ago.

Sol Campbell doesn't know which way he's going to go. Again, they've

tried to walk it in. Good block blie Ashley Cole. Scholes.

One-two with Owen. Neville. Almost. Almost able to find Paul Scholes.

Yorke. Trying to feed Donovan, onside. Back to Dwight Yorke. 2-1.

Dwight Yorke, who scored 65 times for Manchester United, has the first

goal of the day for the Rest of the World. They've managed to reduce the

deficit for Carlo Ancelotti's team. What a good goal as well, wasn't it?

Great ball. Great pullback by Donovan. Yorke puts him in. You

think he will square it across the goal. Options in the box. Great

pullback. That's a wonderful finish by Dwight Yorke. Passes it into the

net. Doesn't blast it. Side-foot, opens himself up and passes it,

bottom corner. Another goalscorer enjoying the moment. A man who was

so prolific in Manchester United's treble-winning season - 2 # goals

that year. -- 29 goals that year. Former Portugese international once

more. Ronaldinho. Tricks and flicks beginning to become more evident

here. Yorke. The Kluivert. What a goal that would have been. The

former Dutch international denied by David Seaman. Ronaldinho is coming

into his own now. This is a moment which will be very proud for David

Beckham. David Beckham is going to replace Beckham. First of all, the

former England captain is going to get a standing ovation on his return

to Old Trafford. Including from his previous manager, what a moment.

Father hugs son. Has Brooklyn Beckham, 16-and-a-half years of age,

wearing No 7, he is not 17 until March, will get 15 minutes at Old

Trafford. What an occasion for him. Help has the ball now.

Talk about trying to follow in your father's footsteps. He's playing on

the right. There is his cross. That was a bit like dad. He actually runs

like him and everything, doesn't he. If he could play like him he will

have a wonderful career. He has come in there. His shaped and everything.

To the far-post. Ashley Cole. Off and running here. Scholes has found

him. Brooklyn Beckham is in space. He was trying to find Scholes at the

back post. He did everything right. Right move, he couldn't pull it back

enough for Scholes to tap it in. Suffice to say, tired legs out there

at the moment. Here come the Rest of the World with Ronaldinho. Tried to

step inside Sol Campbell. . Way he was ever going to shoot. He has to

make it look good. To easy to run in the box and pull the trigger and

score. Sol Campbell knew that. He will do a trick on us here. He

blocks him off. He's still smiling. He's not finished yet. David Beckham

is coming back on. Sol Campbell is departing. His former England

team-mate looks a little reluctant to leave the pitch. Beckham will

play with his son at Old Trafford for the final eight minutes. I tell

you something, Chris, in all he has achieved in his glittering career

that moment will be right up there with them. Definitely. He passed the

ball, given him back. Giving him a telling off. Went straight back to

dad. Can anyone else play? Can I have my ball back? As it went to

another play the boos went round Old Trafford.

Great Britain and Ireland have a corner. Young Brooklyn will take the

corner. David Beckham pointed to him, like, go on, you can have it.

Bun one or two of these practiced in the garden in the Beckham household.

Is there an end product? Can he pass to his dad? He can. All that

practice almost came off. Thats with a good delivery. David Beckham gets

up very, very well. Standard jump. Just can't get it on target. Now,

imagine that. Cross by Beckham, headed in by Beckham. David Beckham.

Kept in by Cole. Oh. That one is in. You never lose that instinct. A

mistake by the goalkeeper hand Michael Owen alive to the situation.

He gets his second. Great Britain and Ireland's third. Yeah, a lot of

time on the ball. Comes across to the far-post. Ashley Cole squares

it. As you can see here, he has all the time, space, ball in. This is

the cross. This is a howler this one. Michael Owen, as you said,

goalscorers just seem to think - he get in the areas. He anticipated. He

gets his reward. The goalkeeper has to put his hand up here. Oh, dear

me! Great Britain and Ireland 3, Rest of the World 1. Just cannot

take away that steely professionalism that brought these

players to the very top of the game. Beckham Jnr. Scholes. Encouraged to

shoot. He's gone for the chip. Almost! A Paul Scholes special. Had

he tried it first half with Edwin van der Saar. He didn't get any

luck, van der Saar read it. Looks like he will put power on it. He

just dinks it. Again, if it comes back off the bar, that would be a

hat-trick would it be for Michael Owen? We have seen great

entertainment and terrific touches. Is there one more left? Ronaldinho!

Seaman was beaten. Look at David Seaman. As if to think - you're not

going to do it again. You've had whatever years you're having on that

one. I don't one want another one. You can see the quality he has got.

Digs it out of his feet. Look, clip. You don't know what he's going to do

Ronaldinho. There's the final whistle. Terrific afternoon's

entertainment. Sir Alex Ferguson's return to the dug-out at Old

Trafford is a winning one. Great Britain and Ireland, led by David

Beckham, have won the game by 3-1. Paul Scholes in the first half and

then Michael Owen on as a substitute with two goals in the second.

Another former Manchester United player on the scoresheet at the

other end in Dwight Yorke. Played in magnificent spirit. Those two

managers with five Champions League successes between them. They have

seen an afternoon of high quality for a terrific cause that has

finished Great Britain and Ireland 3, Rest of the World 1.

When David Beckham picked up the phone and said - would you like to

come to Manchester and play in a charity game, does anyone say no If

the agenda allows it we always support each other. Many of our

generation are doing good things around the globe. We always fry to

support each other when it's possible. A night like this a result

doesn't matter. A few players to be annoyed to have lost 3-1 out there.

Yeah, of course. To play away was not bad 3-1. You will take the away

goal? Yeah, exactly. Phil, a victory what was the performance like out

there? I thought we played well. The main worry was whether we would have

players left. Everyone kept going down with calf strains. A fantastic

day. You forget how good it's playing football. When you get back

out there is rivalry and aggression. I really enjoyed it. Were you robbed

there? Yeah, we were. Phil, it seems to be the old Manchester United way

for that first goal, you back to Beckham, Beckham into Scholes and

1-0? Was the cross It and the timing of the run from Scholes was

fantastic. The way that Beckham put it on a sixpence. I think you forget

how good these players were, Scholes, unbelievable. The quality

from David Beckham. I don't see another player in football cross a

ball like that. You see Ronaldinho and Figo on the ball. It's not nice

being a defender as well. Two goal hero, Michael Owen. Join us here.

instinct. I know where the ball will go it's whether my legs can take me

there. Did you enjoy being back at Old Trafford you got a lovely

reception I had three enjoyable years. I wasn't my best at the end

of my career. My career started well and petered off I have a lot of time

for this place. Three years here. A lot of good people and friends.

These boys have been here longer than me. It's a special club. Nice

to have Beckham back to Beckham at the end with Brooklyn coming on? He

played better than David to be fair. He tracked back. It was nice. A

personal touch at the end. Brooklyn loves playing football. Nice to

experience. What a great occasion. What happened in Paris last night. A

beautifully observed minute's silence before the game. Everyone's

thoughts with the poor people of Paris at this moment? Yeah. Of

course. It's a disaster. Horrific evening for us in Paris. The whole

world witnessed. Great to have the support. Now we have to grieve our

like for you? Was incredible. It Obviously, I'm very proud of what

we've achieved today. You know we set off 10 days ago to play seven

games on seven continents in nine days. It was always going to be a

challenge. This was obviously the game that all the other games were

centred around. It couldn't have gone any better than obviously what

it has tonight. Such a special occasion. I want to thank the fans

for coming out and supporting the charity and children around the

world. I want to thank the managers, the players, all the staff, everyone

that has been involved in this incredible journey. It's been a

special day. You know one thing I do want to say on behalf behalf of

myself, managers, players, the fans and everyone around the world we

pass our condolences on to the people who have lost loved ones in

Paris. A devastating situation and one that is obviously, you noi, it's

upset and hurt many people. We all pass our condolences on to the

people who have lost loved ones. That is where you finish your career

in a a city you enjoyed being in. Horrified to think what happened

yesterday? I mean, it is. Obviously, I've got so much love for Paris as a

city anyway. I played my 100th game there for England. I finished my

career there with PSG. It's a special place. Obviously, these

things happen all over the world. It's devastating to see. You know,

we want to, like I said, we pass our condolences on to the people who

have lost a lot of loved once. In terms of tonight's game, a

comfortable victory in the end? Yeah. I mean, it's never comfortable

when you have plays like Cafu, Figo and Ronaldinho on the field thechl

can do many things. But I never had the chance to play with some of

these players, but fortunately I did play can some of these players.

Players like Cafu I played against. To be on the same field as him is

incredible. To be on the same field with all of these players, they have

given up their time to support a great cause. It means so much not

just to me, I'm a player out there an Ambassador of Unicef. I'm proud

to be proud of an organisation that does so much for young children

around the world. Today was special. Winding back the clock there,

Neville to Beckham, cross, Scholes 1-0 Yeah. It's usually Gary doing

the overlapse and not getting the ball. It was Phil's turn tonight. It

was a special night, you know. Playing out there and having the

manager in the changing room. Me setting the goal up for Scholes. It

never gets old. I'm always - I always think I need to impress the

manager to try and get another - Even tonight? Yeah. I'm always going

to think that. My mentality is, I love the game. I love Manchester

United. I love playing here. I always think, even at 40 years old,

maybe there's another chance! I don't think so. There might be

another chance for a Beckham. Your son Brooklyn was out there as well.

You were able to join him for the last 10 minutes of the game? I

wasn't meant to. Sol came off with an injury. The man said do you fans

going on not at centre-half. Having Brooklyn out there is special.

Special for a few reasons. One of my lasting memories at Manchester

United is winning the Premiership and walking around with Brooklyn at

18 months old. To see him now, 16, walk on to the field, it's a special

moment. Then obviously to go back on there and to pass the ball to my

son, it's - you know, it might never happen again. It's special.

Congratulations on pulling the game off. Same again next year? We'll
