Hello and welcome to
The Premier League Show. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
This week we've come to the capital
for a special look ahead | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
to the weekend's main event. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
Over 60,000 fans will pack out
the Emirates on Saturday lunchtime, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:51
eager in anticipation of the 194th
north London derby, the latest | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
chapter of one of English
football's greatest rivalries. | 0:00:53 | 0:01:01
Can he do it? Yes, he can. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
Oh, I say, brilliant! What a goal!
And that might be the Championship | 0:01:09 | 0:01:17
clinching goal. Always intense. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:23
DANCE MUSIC | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Incredible strike by Harry Kane. Van
Persie! | 0:01:30 | 0:01:37
Gareth Bale for Tottenham. Great
goal. Fabregas, and it's through! | 0:01:42 | 0:01:52
It's for - four. Unbelievable. You
couldn't make this up. He's won it! | 0:01:52 | 0:02:04
This is Roy of the Rovers stuff. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
So many memorable moments down the
years but what of the two club's | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
future is? | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
As important as Saturday's game
is towards local bragging rights, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
and even the title picture,
there are perhaps even more pressing | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
matters facing Arsenal and Spurs. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
To address some of these issues,
we've assembled a panel | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
of experts, each well versed
in this particular rivalry. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
Jermaine Jenas played over
150 times for Tottenham | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
during a seven-and-a-half-year spell
at White Hart Lane, and was part | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
of the last Spurs side
to win a major trophy. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
A lifelong Gooner, Alex Scott has
also represented the Arsenal Ladies | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
side with great distinction
in a career that's | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
claimed 19 major honours. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
John Cross is the chief football
writer of the Daily Mirror, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
and author of The Inside Story
of Arsenal Under Wenger. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
Entrepreneur, electronics pioneer,
football club chairman, politician, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
and star of his own reality TV show,
Lord Sugar has occupied many | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
roles over the years,
but the one constant is that | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
of fervent Spurs fan. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
So, with our guests in place,
let's get down to business. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
We'll start with the home side
for whom the phrase "mixed start" | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
might almost have been invented. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
COMMENTATOR: Arsenal hope this
season's absence from the Champions | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
League paves the way for a genuine
crack at the title. Giroud! It's in. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:26
For- three, Arsenal. Liverpool have
swept Arsenal side here today. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:37
# I've passed this way before
# And I've felt this pain before | 0:03:40 | 0:03:48
winning it for Watford! I want to
see who's up for it and who's up for | 0:03:51 | 0:03:57
the challenge and I felt today that
none of them were. Arsenal, 12 | 0:03:57 | 0:04:04
points off the league leaders now. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
On the pitch with Arsenal so far
this season it feels a little bit | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
like same old dame old, doesn't it?
It feels like Groundhog Day. I think | 0:04:18 | 0:04:24
again it's going to be a scramble
for a top four placed rather than | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
challenging for the title. That is
disappointing because Arsene | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
Wenger's decision to stay on after
the FA Cup Final was based on the | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
facts, can he put Arsenal to the
next level? Arsenal seem to be in a | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
frustrating place. They are nearly
there and you nearly want them to | 0:04:41 | 0:04:46
click on but I feel they are in the
second year of Challenger is pushing | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
for top four rather than challenging
for the title. Did his decision to | 0:04:49 | 0:04:55
delay his announcement about his
contract, whether he was staying, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
last season, has it had a knock-on
effect into this season? It | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
contributed to performances last
season and for the fans there was a | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
lack of clarity and which direction
the club were going in. I think it's | 0:05:07 | 0:05:13
had a knock-on effect. He brought in
Lacazette but there is still | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
something missing in the club where
we haven't clicked on and that's | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
where we're seeing the likes of
Tottenham, it seems like they have | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
more of a strategic plan. I've been
a great fan of Arsene Wenger four | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
years. He's had them in the
Champions League for 20 odd years, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:33
hasn't he? I don't think anyone else
has achieved that. I think there's | 0:05:33 | 0:05:39
precipitation down to the players,
what I'd called adverse publicity, | 0:05:39 | 0:05:44
external influences from the media,
uncertainty of contracts of some of | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
the players, uncertainty whether
Arsene is going to hack it any more | 0:05:47 | 0:05:55
and that goes down to the pitch, I
have to say. It's reminiscent of my | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
days at Spurs where the players were
resigned to the fact that we were | 0:05:59 | 0:06:05
useless because the media were
saying we were useless. Until | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
Jermaine come along! What seemed to
have happened at Arsenal, the AGM | 0:06:08 | 0:06:15
highlighted this, there is a
disconnect between the fans and the | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
board. They feel that the board does
not really care about them and their | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
club and it's very much a business
and there are a set of fans who | 0:06:23 | 0:06:28
really care. They need to believe as
well. I know we are talking about | 0:06:28 | 0:06:33
Arsenal but this is a warning sign
for cotton as well. Arsenal built a | 0:06:33 | 0:06:38
beautiful stadium -- a warning sign
for Spurs as well. A lot of the | 0:06:38 | 0:06:43
unrest has come along. A lot of the
fans, although they love the lovely | 0:06:43 | 0:06:49
stadium, Deila Highbury just as much
if not more and they don't feel the | 0:06:49 | 0:06:55
reason to dip into their pockets,
they are wondering why we aren't in | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
the mix for these players? They are
paying all this money to watch the | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
team play and they've gone backwards
inside three. It's not making sense | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
which is where the disconnect comes
between the fans and the club. Do | 0:07:07 | 0:07:12
you think the fans take Arsene
Wenger for granted? In the time he's | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
been there, Liverpool haven't won
the league, Arsene Wenger did it | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
three times. That's always been the
's argument, be careful what you | 0:07:19 | 0:07:25
wish for, which, I wouldn't say it
has kept Arsene Wenger in a job, but | 0:07:25 | 0:07:32
he has been so consistent and you
shouldn't underestimate that. When | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
people look back they will
appreciate it. Absolutely, he got a | 0:07:35 | 0:07:41
standing ovation because he showed a
love for the club and the desire to | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
win and he bleeds Arsenal can be a
top side. Arsene is a very clever | 0:07:45 | 0:07:54
man -- and he believes Arsenal can
be a top side. He is against other | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
clubs with a big cheque-book he
can't compete. Medium players, I say | 0:07:58 | 0:08:06
medium, £50 million players, not
£111, I cannot win now. Arsenal will | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
say that Spurs are pushing. I don't
want to be a downer on Spurs... Not | 0:08:10 | 0:08:19
so early on! I'm always a realistic
person and when you've got two clubs | 0:08:19 | 0:08:24
who have a cheque-book and go out
and buy the best players, aren't | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
going to compete. When you say that,
you're talking about Manchester City | 0:08:27 | 0:08:32
and United? United to a certain
extent but city, for sure. What | 0:08:32 | 0:08:40
about Chelsea? The last two Premier
League champions come Chelsea and | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
Leicester. You've just got to look
at the owners, they don't really | 0:08:43 | 0:08:50
understand the tactics and this and
that and the other. Who's the best | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
player in the world, go and buy him,
doesn't matter how much it costs | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
because they'll get it out of the
oil well. That's the terrible state | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
football is in. Didn't Leicester
give us a glimmer of hope that...? | 0:09:01 | 0:09:11
That season, some of the so-called
big clubs were sorting themselves | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
out and worked in competition. It
was an amazing thing that happened | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
and good luck to Leicester and
stupid Tottenham should have taken | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
their chances then. If ever there
was a chance for us to win the | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
league we should have done it then.
Are the Arsenal fans prepared to go | 0:09:27 | 0:09:32
through a period of transition where
you may go through two or three | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
managers before you get the goose
that lays the golden egg? That could | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
take six or seven years. It could
and that's where the hierarchy are | 0:09:39 | 0:09:44
looking. Had they had the right
candidates to replace Arsene Wenger? | 0:09:44 | 0:09:50
That's where, OK, Arsenal are
looking for the longer term plan. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:55
Spurs have been climbing the table.
Every season Arsenal are picking up | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
silverware and Spurs have yet to do
that. Arsenal are fed up with | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
pushing for the top four. They want
the title. I imagine quite fed up | 0:10:04 | 0:10:10
indeed if these contracts for the
likes of Sanchez and Wilshere money | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
out and they leave. We had it with
Sol Campbell, yeah. David Pleat, | 0:10:14 | 0:10:20
bless him, and George Graham said at
the time, Chairman, leave it to us. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:24
Don't worry, don't worry, he's going
nowhere. I said to them, gentlemen, | 0:10:24 | 0:10:30
sadly you are as though
old-fashioned and entrenched in the | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
business, you don't understand the
effect of the Bosman rule. This | 0:10:34 | 0:10:40
agent of Mr Campbell does understand
it. They said no, Chairman, leave it | 0:10:40 | 0:10:45
to us, he'll be here next season.
That was history! May be what's | 0:10:45 | 0:10:51
going on with Wilshere and the same.
Burn down the contract, somebody | 0:10:51 | 0:10:56
gets them for free and they
campaigned them higher wages without | 0:10:56 | 0:11:02
the transfer fee. Do you think
Wanger has resigned himself to that? | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
I think he has with Sanchez, I think
Sanchez will play for Manchester | 0:11:06 | 0:11:10
City. Ozil is going to leave for
free and I think Wilshere is | 0:11:10 | 0:11:15
different, I think he'd like to
play. Why has that been allowed to | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
happen? If you are at the top of
Arsenal, you'd look at Sanchez and | 0:11:19 | 0:11:24
Ozil, I know he hasn't performed
well but they are world stars and | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
you'd build a team around that and
make sure they are continually at | 0:11:28 | 0:11:33
the club. How has it come to the
point where you are toning down 60 | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
million quid and letting him walk
away for free? It adds to the fans' | 0:11:36 | 0:11:42
unrest? That's my point, Jermaine.
I'm being devil 's advocate, I don't | 0:11:42 | 0:11:48
believe the player would have gone.
You wouldn't have turned down 60 | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
million, would you? You'd be nuts,
as the club come if you thought he | 0:11:52 | 0:11:57
was going. From the player's
perspective, when we know a player | 0:11:57 | 0:12:02
doesn't want to be at the club, they
want to go, but against Manchester | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
City he is in the line-up over
Lacazette. You'd think I've | 0:12:05 | 0:12:13
committed my future but I've got a
player ahead of me who doesn't want | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
to be here. I suppose that's more a
question of what's going on? What is | 0:12:16 | 0:12:23
successful Arsenal this season?
Getting back in the Champions | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
League? 100% committed they get in
the top four, they must qualify that | 0:12:25 | 0:12:31
as success because it looks
impossible. They've got a good | 0:12:31 | 0:12:36
squad, they really have, but the way
things are going, that would be a | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
successful season for Arsenal. I'm
hoping it happens, Jermaine! And a | 0:12:40 | 0:12:45
good cup run. You won two cups over
the last oblivious and you're still | 0:12:45 | 0:12:51
saying you take that. Top four would
be a remarkable finish for Arsenal, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:56
bear in mind everything that's
happened. And again a tribute to | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
Begg's consistency and longevity. I
have in the foggiest why he | 0:13:00 | 0:13:05
continues to beat himself up -- to
Wenger's consistency. You wouldn't | 0:13:05 | 0:13:10
say you are fired to Arsene Wenger?
No, tremendous admiration. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:22
After a slow start, Spurs have found
their feet and now they are the | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
leading Londoners. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
their feet and now they are the
leading Londoners. Much has been | 0:13:27 | 0:13:28
said about Spurs's so-called Wembley
kudu. The sucker punch with two and | 0:13:28 | 0:13:37
a half minutes to play. -- Wembley
kudu. Kane hasn't scored in August. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:44
An equaliser for Burnley. Tottenham
can't win at Wembley. Kane! August | 0:13:44 | 0:13:52
has gone and September has arrived
and Kane is back among the goals. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
Eriksen comes up trumps. Spurs have
their first Premier League victory | 0:13:56 | 0:14:04
at Wembley. Kane! Tottenham Hotspur,
four, Liverpool, Walton. What a | 0:14:04 | 0:14:12
night for Tottenham. Spurs, three,
where Madrid, one. The result will | 0:14:12 | 0:14:18
reverberate through the continent --
Real Madrid. We started have | 0:14:18 | 0:14:24
confidence at Wembley. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
Obviously Spurs took a while to get
going at Wembley and a slow start in | 0:14:31 | 0:14:36
the league but the performance
against Real Madrid in the Champions | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
League at Wembley must be their
benchmark now, hasn't it? It was a | 0:14:39 | 0:14:44
realisation for Pochettino and the
players and the club of where they | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
want to be and how they want to is
be perceived. A couple of seasons | 0:14:47 | 0:14:54
ago in the Europa League they went
to Baresi Dortmund and everyone | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
expected a lot and it didn't quite
happen. -- bushie Dortmund. This | 0:14:57 | 0:15:03
year was the year for the manager to
go, I've got this team and I'm going | 0:15:03 | 0:15:07
to make them even better. As a
player, when you come through | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
moments like that it makes you grow
and I expect the team to kick on and | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
achieve big things. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:20
We are talking about Pochettino
potentially one of the best managers | 0:15:20 | 0:15:22
in Europe. He has every attribute, I
think, out there, you can't fail to | 0:15:22 | 0:15:27
like him. He's an excellent
tactician, the players adore him, | 0:15:27 | 0:15:30
you see the connection. How will he
win a major trophy at Tottenham? | 0:15:30 | 0:15:35
Particularly when he's balancing the
demands of the team, demands of the | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
club, moving to a new stadium and
the financial pressures that will | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
bring. It's a huge job in front of
him. It | 0:15:41 | 0:15:55
is a feeling at the moment that the
players feel there are onto | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
something. They feel, we've got
something here. The Real Madrid | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
result, as far as the fans were
concerned, that was our winning the | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
Premier League moment. That was it,
you couldn't do better than that. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
Real Madrid in the Champions League
and we beat them big-time. B is the | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
one manager, Pochettino, who has the
potential to make spares the closest | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
challengers. What he's doing is
overachieving and I think to do that | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
he's got together this young group
of players, he's got them all | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
believing they're playing wonderful,
attacking, attractive football. He | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
really is doing something special, I
think. He has to keep those players | 0:16:24 | 0:16:29
and you think when they look around
at their contemporaries at other | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
clubs and know they are not being
paid as much, eventually it's going | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
to start to work a little bit. Yes,
and players are known for what you | 0:16:35 | 0:16:42
win, silverware. When do we say,
this is the season they have to win | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
something? With the Real Madrid
game, the pressure wasn't on them in | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
that game. I just think, when are
they going to kick on, get some | 0:16:49 | 0:16:54
silverware, because it is different
when you have to do produce those | 0:16:54 | 0:16:59
performances consistently. It's
against Real Madrid. If Real Madrid | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
go away and when that game it is,
OK, they were playing against Real | 0:17:02 | 0:17:06
Madrid. I am saying consistently
producing performances instead of | 0:17:06 | 0:17:10
those one-off moments. Bee it'll be
the thing we talk about or who knows | 0:17:10 | 0:17:14
how long. He will be there until he
does win something. He has the | 0:17:14 | 0:17:21
opportunity to win the League Cup
the other day. That can be a great | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
stepping stone. Us the fact you
don't want to waste your time and | 0:17:24 | 0:17:29
put your energy into the League Cup,
I think that's wrong. That is a bit | 0:17:29 | 0:17:33
of silverware missed already. We
have to remember what this manager | 0:17:33 | 0:17:39
has created. Dele Alli getting a
link with Barcelona, Real Madrid. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:43
These top players for Spurs are
getting linked with the best clubs | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
in world football. These are players
that'll be able to walk into the | 0:17:46 | 0:17:50
team at Real Madrid or Barcelona and
a lot of that is on the basis of | 0:17:50 | 0:17:55
what raise your budget you has done.
Do they need to win something? -- | 0:17:55 | 0:18:04
that is on the basis of what
Pochettino has done. I think it is | 0:18:04 | 0:18:09
on the vision of trying to achieve,
trying to win. The minutes that goes | 0:18:09 | 0:18:14
away, I think you do lose the focus
of someone like Harry Kane. Harry is | 0:18:14 | 0:18:19
one of those players, he seems to be
the one that will stay. He's still | 0:18:19 | 0:18:23
going to have to incentivise him in
terms of, what are we doing this | 0:18:23 | 0:18:27
season? What are we trying to
achieve? Comments like Danny Rose's | 0:18:27 | 0:18:32
in the summer don't help. Having to
Google transfers. Walker has a | 0:18:32 | 0:18:38
championship medal. Some players
might ask more questions. If you go | 0:18:38 | 0:18:42
back to the great Sir Alex Ferguson,
if he had a player like Danny Rose | 0:18:42 | 0:18:48
make a statement like he did in the
media, he would have been dead meat, | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
gone. What he spoke was the truth.
You shouldn't have said it and done | 0:18:51 | 0:18:57
it in the way you did and you can
understand why at the top end of a | 0:18:57 | 0:19:01
football club you would say, get
out, mate. The only problem is that | 0:19:01 | 0:19:06
Manchester United, when you're dead
and finish and he kicks them out the | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
door, inevitably you go down. At
Tottenham and your Danny Rose, he | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
kicks him out the door and he goes
up. He will go to Manchester City, | 0:19:13 | 0:19:17
PSG. Not now, Jermaine, because we
are a contender now. We came second | 0:19:17 | 0:19:25
last year, we are a big club now. So
you've got Danny Rose basically | 0:19:25 | 0:19:31
kicking off, making it clear he
wants to go. He's made that crystal | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
clear. But as an asset as well as
the player, if you completely derail | 0:19:34 | 0:19:39
him, completely put him in the
reserves, you just topped off 20 | 0:19:39 | 0:19:44
million from his transfer fee. You
only have to do it once and to make | 0:19:44 | 0:19:49
a statement and say, don't mess with
me. He should have been dismissed | 0:19:49 | 0:19:53
immediately and then he made a
pathetic apology which got about | 0:19:53 | 0:19:57
that much space in the back pages.
You have a magnifying glass... Danny | 0:19:57 | 0:20:05
Rose apologises. Let's move on to
the new ground and let's not get | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
into a debate about whether they
will start the beginning of the 20 | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
18th season. What fans will want is
we got a lovely stadium, we want to | 0:20:12 | 0:20:20
keep on being able to pay the top
salaries to players, bringing top | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
players. They don't want to have to
sacrifice that for four or five | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
seasons. I think that is where
Tottenham's plans come into place. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:32
They have a young team, Arsenal
moved into the new stadium and you | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
had players coming towards the end
of their careers are they had to go | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
through a transition. Tottenham, I
think you have it all, you have the | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
young team to build on, the new
stadium. It's all upwards. We went | 0:20:41 | 0:20:45
through the transition phase at the
Emirates. You brought the end of an | 0:20:45 | 0:20:50
era into a new era. And tried to
rebuild it, as well. Tottenham is | 0:20:50 | 0:20:55
all about having a young manager in
Pochettino, managing to keep the | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
young squad together during a period
of great upheaval and transition. It | 0:20:59 | 0:21:05
is the belief we have and also don't
forget we have a few kids in the | 0:21:05 | 0:21:09
background coming through. He's very
interested in those kids and he's | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
giving them a chance. He has given
them a chance. They were talking | 0:21:12 | 0:21:17
about a player and the main part of
the puzzle is keeping the manager at | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
Spurs. That is where you start it. I
think part of the Bulls, as well, is | 0:21:20 | 0:21:26
to win something without spending a
fortune. -- part of the buzz. I | 0:21:26 | 0:21:32
don't think he wants to take the
easy route, he wants to do to the | 0:21:32 | 0:21:37
right way. He's probably at the most
perfect club in Europe to do that. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
They're not going to go crazy with
finances, they have a very good | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
youth academy and he will want to be
part of that special moment when it | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
comes. Does anybody think they won't
finish above Arsenal? No. Spurs have | 0:21:47 | 0:21:55
changed. Arsenal have had 20 years
of dominance in north London thanks | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
to Arsene Wenger. I think people who
say, oh, you should have higher | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
sites than finishing above your
rivals never understand the dynamics | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
of a derby and what it means to
fans. It means everything. It's been | 0:22:06 | 0:22:13
a great comfort for Wenger. And
things are changing. Thank you so | 0:22:13 | 0:22:21
much to John, Alex, Jermaine, Lord
Sugar. Some really interesting | 0:22:21 | 0:22:25
topics we discussed. Let's see in a
year's time, which prophecies come | 0:22:25 | 0:22:29
true. Same time same place? Same
place. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:34
So a huge game to relish
on Saturday, and that's just | 0:22:34 | 0:22:36
the beginning of another
action-packed weekend, | 0:22:36 | 0:22:38
as the Premier League returns
following the international break. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:39
as the Premier League returns
following the international break. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
They've nipped it in the second
minute of injury time. Splendid, to | 0:22:42 | 0:22:48
break the deadlock. Sam Vokes has
done it for Burnley! Trying to find | 0:22:48 | 0:22:56
that balance between starting
defensively and our defensive record | 0:22:56 | 0:23:00
is not too bad but you have to find
some momentum going forward. Seven | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
goals in 11 games is not a
particularly good tally. Our | 0:23:03 | 0:23:12
confidence in terms of what we can
achieve is at a particularly low | 0:23:12 | 0:23:17
ebb, I don't think so. What worries
me about statistics. In the last two | 0:23:17 | 0:23:32
years we beat them twice so we know
we can beat them. We play 100%. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:38
We've had an up and down start to
the season. Adam Lallana is coming | 0:23:38 | 0:23:45
back. He's a massive player.
Hopefully we can do that. It's | 0:23:45 | 0:23:58
difficult to fight for the title
again. Every team wants to win | 0:23:58 | 0:24:03
against Chelsea. Anthony Marty Al
takes them ahead -- Anthony Martial. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:18
And Watford have the lead! The young
Brazilian. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
Oh, it's in! Peter Crouch, a great
header. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:36
Plenty more by way of preview
of the Premier League weekend | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
on Football Focus this
Saturday lunchtime. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
The north London derby
gets things under way, | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
and then at 3 o'clock leaders
Manchester City travel | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
to Leicester hoping to extend
their 8-point advantage. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:46
At the other end of the table
Crystal Palace face Everton | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
while Swansea travel to high-flying
Burnley. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:50
Under pressure Tony Pulis
and West Brom have a tough-looking | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
task against Chelsea,
before Manchester United play | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
Newcastle in the tea-time game. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:56
On Sunday David Moyes
takes charge of West Ham | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
for the first time at Watford,
and then Brighton and Stoke | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
round things off on Monday night. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:06
Lots to look forward to,
and hopefully plenty of goals. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:11
These days it seems that it's not
simply the act of scoring alone | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
that's enough to make a statement,
but how you then mark | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
that big moment. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:17
# It ain't what you do... | 0:25:21 | 0:25:26
# It ain't what you do... Scoring a
goal is a rare and wonderful thing | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
and according to most footballers,
there's no feeling in the world that | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
can quite match it for sheer
elation. Well, apart from scoring | 0:25:31 | 0:25:35
two goals, I suppose. Or three.
Anyway, how does one translate that | 0:25:35 | 0:25:40
most intangible of the feelings into
an appropriate celebration | 0:25:40 | 0:25:42
afterwards?
# It is your thing, do what you want | 0:25:42 | 0:25:50
to do | 0:25:50 | 0:25:50 | |
to do and
# Whilst today's offerings tend | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
tantamount to dance, it used to be
fairly formal. During much of the | 0:25:53 | 0:26:00
early 20th century, a firm handshake
and a ruffle of the moustache | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
sufficed. A particularly fine strike
might warrant a doffing of the cap, | 0:26:03 | 0:26:08
but anything more extravagant was
considered bad form and could result | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12
in deportation to Australia. He was
disgusted, as well he might be. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:19
Despite the fact that the 60s and
70s were known for their disco | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
extravaganzas, old pitch -- on pitch
celebrations didn't match up. By the | 0:26:22 | 0:26:31
1980s, this deranged, seemingly
never ending - was merely par for | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
the course. Invite, major
international tournaments proved to | 0:26:34 | 0:26:42
be fertile ground for the revolution
of goal celebrations. Roger Miller | 0:26:42 | 0:26:46
showing corner flags the time of
their lives. Going Patrick Swayze, | 0:26:46 | 0:26:51
putting baby in the corner, and
Gazza getting images the on field | 0:26:51 | 0:26:55
dentistry at Euro 96. However, it
wasn't until the advent of the | 0:26:55 | 0:27:01
Premier League that goal
celebrations really came into their | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
own. For some, the sheer
unadulterated joy of scoring allowed | 0:27:03 | 0:27:11
them to bend the very laws of
physics. Whilst for others, those | 0:27:11 | 0:27:16
laws remained firmly in place. Some
used their post-goal celebrations to | 0:27:16 | 0:27:22
deliver a knockout satirical blow.
Jimmy Bullard does the Phil Brown, | 0:27:22 | 0:27:28
sit them down and gives them a
ticking off. Whilst others used it | 0:27:28 | 0:27:32
to receive one. Then again, Wayne
does have a history of picking | 0:27:32 | 0:27:38
fights with himself. Jurgen
Klinsmann's famous dies were used to | 0:27:38 | 0:27:44
silence his critics. Whilst Robbie
Fowler's touchline snorting and him | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
plenty of new ones. And of course
there's always been room for a spot | 0:27:47 | 0:27:51
of dad dancing. However, as the
inspiration well begins to run dry, | 0:27:51 | 0:27:57
we've been subjected to
monstrosities like this... This... | 0:27:57 | 0:28:01
And worst of all, this... It's not
looking good, is it? So where do we | 0:28:01 | 0:28:09
go from here? A dance studio,
apparently, to figure out the future | 0:28:09 | 0:28:12
of goal celebrations. Cue the
montage! | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
It's a lot harder than it looks,
this celebration law. I think I'll | 0:28:28 | 0:28:31
leave it to the professionals. You
do it best, guys. Anyone know where | 0:28:31 | 0:28:35
you can get eight two dry-cleaned? | 0:28:35 | 0:28:37
I'm not sure we'll be seeing
Ben on Match Of The Day | 0:28:37 | 0:28:40
or Strictly just yet. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:42
Don't forget, if you've
missed anything, then | 0:28:42 | 0:28:44
the show is on the iPlayer. | 0:28:44 | 0:28:45
Next Thursday we'll be
in the Premier League leaders' | 0:28:45 | 0:28:47
back yard in Manchester,
but until then enjoy | 0:28:47 | 0:28:49
your footballing weekend
and enjoy it on the BBC. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
Goodbye. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:54 |
