Hello, welcome to Match of the Day 2 Extra, we are on BBC Two and five

live and the BBC sport web-site. I'm joined by Kevin Kilbane, Shay Given

and Jason Burt. So over the next 45 minutes here is what we will be

discussing. Arsenal left it late at Goodison yesterday to get a point.

Giroud with the late equaliser. Chelsea have now won two out of two

after beating Leicester yesterday. Three games today, including

Manchester United going to Sunderland in the 4 o'clock game and

tomorrow night we have the big one, between Manchester City and

Liverpool. We also hope to be joined by Swansea's manager, Garry Monk

after they beat Burnley yesterday to make it two wins out of two. We want

Here is what both managers had to say. Well it is known as a place

where it is difficult to come back between you're two down. We did it

in a conVIPsing way I must -- convincing way I must say.

Everything went against us in the first half and to concede the second

we had a mountain to climb. But we did it with togetherness. And we

didn't panic. We came back late, but it is a strong point for us. What

happened is we run out of energy and it became a feeling of wanting the

game to end. We are not that sort of side that we can just sit deep and

defend. That is not the way we play. We need to play with the ball. I was

delighted with the performance for 80 minutes. The first half was

phenomenal in the way we took control of the game and we looked a

real threat and we kept Arsenal very quiet. 2-0 is always a dangerous

score, because the opposition will throw everything at you with hope

and if that hope gets the back of the net, you're in a bit of trouble.

It is just where we are in the season. We didn't have that energy

that you need to have. In terms of first half, it gave us a perfect

picture of what we are going to be, or what we want to be until the end

of the season. Shay, we are early in the season, how important a point

could that be for Arsenal as regards to the perception of the club f they

hadn't -- if they can't come back, people would say same old Arsenal.

Yes the first goal, Everton did switch off. It gave them that

lifeline to get the second and the papers are saying The Fight Club. It

was a massive turn around. On the that everton point and Roberto

Martinez saying they got tired, that happened last season. The energy and

the pressing they do and they found themselves 60 minutes with their

legs tired. I they rely on McCarthy. He provides so much for the team and

gives them belief to get on the front foot and win the ball. James

himself looked tired towards the end. Him and Gareth Barry were

dropping deeper on to the centre halves and Jagielka and Distin were

dropping further. And they like to play higher up the pitch, to get the

team up the pitch and keep possession. I think it was probably

not happening from the last 30 minutes of the game. Do you think

from an Arsenal point of view that understandably early in the season,

and they have new players that Arsene Wenger might be trying to

work out formation. Yes he started with Sanchez up front and it wasn't

working. Everton were doing the pressing and Sanchez was trying to

press on his own. When Giroud came on it made a difference. Cazorla,

look at the strength in-depth in the Arsenal squad, it is better than for

some time. There was a calmness about them. The way they worked

their way back. They got the goals left, but you were thinking get one

and they will get two, because ever torp were -- Everton were tiring. It

is a strong point for Arsenal and shows the strength. Giroud made that

difference and gave them that presence up front and he is allowed

to hold the ball up. How do you best use Sanchez if Giroud gives them

that presence and that is their best Sen Serce forward? -- centre

forward. I the way he was playing for Chile, he was a kind of No 9,

but he was floating every where. He has played on the right for Arsenal

in the first couple of games he struggled in both games. He has not

been involved and he is not heavily enough involved in the attacks. He

will come up with moments of magic, but he gives the ball away at times.

Do you think Arsenal could do with another striker? Yes he is not an

out and out striker, Sanchez, we are wondering what is his best position.

But he has a big price tag and possibly a No 10 off the centre

forward. But the same as last season, I would be worried to play

Sanchez on his own. Arsene Wenger is probably worried after yesterday.

They have got Campbell as well and it looks they will move on Podolski,

there could be an opportunity to bring someone else. But they're

talking of another defensive midfielder. In the first half they

were outpowered by Everton. We will look back at the other games and we

hope to be joined by Garry Monk of Swansea. For today, there are three

games. Two you will hear on five live. The 4 o'clock game between

Sunderland and Manchester and Spurs versus QPR. Helle against Stoke is

the other game. But that game at Tottenham, Steve Wilson is doing

this game and I asked him about the old boys renuance yon at -- reunion

at the Lane. It will be an old boys' reunion? Yes some ex-Tottenham

personnel. Harry, his first return since Tottenham got rid of him.

Glenn Hoddle one of Spurs' best players and a former manager and Joe

Jordan and Kevin Bond. They played OK last weekend, but lost at home to

Hull. Harry was happy with the performance and not the result. He

would be delighted to get something today. How would you describe Spurs'

start to the season. Quietly efficient? Not bad. Beat West Ham

late. One in Limassol on Thursday in difficult conditions, 38 degrees in

Cyprus. So it was good to win. They can play better. But they have won

war both matches. They didn't get back to England until 4am on

Thursday. QPR will test them. But Mauricio Pochettino has totered --

started all right and he is a good manager. Thank you. Already getting

tweets in. Adebayor has tweeted, let's get another three points. Do

you think things same calmer at Spurs? They need to be. They do need

to have, to give this coach some time. They have had a huge turn

around in managers in last ten years. I'm a big fan of Mauricio

Pochettino, he is a strong coach and gets his team playing in a

particular way. This group of players could be good for him. What

I have been pleased about is they haven't chopped and changed the

squad. They didn't need to do that. There is an argument that Mauricio

Pochettino is alone as an Argentinian will be good for

Lamella. He is young and it took him a long time to settle at Roma and

this could be his season. If not they will cut their losses. That is

a point with Lamella he is young and some players need time to settle.

Yes very young and a huge price tag as well. I know its not the player's

fault. But it will weigh on someone so young. Mauricio Pochettino, we

have seen last year at Southampton, everyone was impressed with how well

they played. I think it is time they gave him four or five years to get

his team in there and get the best out of the players. They spent a lot

last summer and seven or eight players and it is port they have got

-- important they get time to bed in. As far as QPR, what will

constituent a -- constitute a good season? To stay up. They need to get

to that 40 point mark quickly. They have enough within the squad to do

that. I think the personnel he brought in over the summer,

Ferdinand, he did make a mistake for last week's goal, but he will

provide stability and experience and professionalism. That will run

through the squad. How interesting do you think it is that Harry

Redknapp is secure enough to bring coaches into the club who are

managers themselves. Whether it be Steve McClaren, or Glenn Hoddle. Not

many managers would do that. He is secure in his own right. A lot of

managers wouldn't do it and would feel under pressure and as soon as

they bring in a coach. It is credit to Harry Redknapp that he can do

that. He knows it will enhance his reputation. Harry is getting older.

He needs somebody doing a lot of training on the pitch. But what is

interesting, if they hadn't have got promoted, he would have gone. But as

Kevin says, he had that confidence to think I will bring in somebody

like Glenn Hoddle. People forget how long Glenn Hoddle has been out of

coaching. It is good for Glenn Hoddle. He could have taken the

Palace job. But he said QPR have given me the opportunity. But it is

unusual. Paul Lamb Bert is doing it with Roy Keane as soon as he was

appointed as assistant, we said, we know what will happen, he will take

over. But it is about being secure in your position. Yes and it was

Paul Lamb Bert's decision to bring Roy Keane in. Roy Keane is a manager

in his own right. But it is fantastic that he believes in his

own ability that he can bring in an ex-player, or a coach of his Cal ber

to a-- calibre to assist him. You can hear commentary of Spurs and

QPR. The other lunchtime game is Hull versus spoke. A lot of people

were being positive about spoke and their transfer business. We deserved

the three points last week. It could have been two or 3-0. Spoke will --

Stoke will look for a response and it is a tough game with Hull winning

last week. I will find manager to talk to you about that isn't

surprising. Hull have had a bit of a tough week. They won at QPR, but

they were beaten in the Europa League and the loss of Robert

Snodgrass will be big. Yes I think Steve Bruce, he is going to be in

the transfer market. There is talk of Jordan Rhodes going to the club.

Is he worth ?10 million or whatever Blackburn ask? Mac-Cormack moved for

11, I think he is in that sort of bracket. What if Balotelli goes for

15. That makes his deal. Shane Long is going for 12 million and they

played 10 million for Rhodes, he does haven't that much experience.

West Brom only paid six million for Shane Long. But the market has

changed and that is where we are at. The clock is ticking and we have a

week to go. He has got to do something and the price goes up for

these players. Clubs know you need to do that. It is odd how it works,

if you went back before they sold Shane Long to Southampton, even said

it has been a good summer for Steve Bruce, but then one injury and one

transfer out and they're looking thin. They made five and a half

million on Shane Long in six months. That is good business for a guy who

scored four goals last season. If they spend it all on Jordan Rhodes,

will that work. They're different players and Rhodes is a natural goal

scorer. Shane Long has so much all round ability. It is, they could hit

a good combination with Jelavic. Or it could be the same player. Let's

talk about some of the other transfers. If you look at the Sunday

morning papers there is one transfer in particular that is dominating.

The express saying Louis van Gaal closing on in Angel. United win ?50

million race to snap up Di Maria. And the Sunday Telegraph, they close

in on a record ?60 million deal for de Maria. Call oh and Shalott says

Di Maria has not trained with those today. -- Ansel Lotti. He says, we

are thankful for what he has done, there is nothing official but it is

being sorted out. But if you look at social media this morning, there are

rumours Real Madrid have added ?20 million on the price in 24 hours

which is even better business. What they are trying to do is create a

market. They had a deal in place with Paris St Germain which they

walked away from. There is an understanding they approached

Manchester City to see if they were interested so they are trying to

tell Manchester United there is a market but if Manchester United

going with ?60 million, that should make the deal happen. I think it

will happen this week if those figures can be reached. It smacks a

bit... They will say it is a great signing, to me, it is a bit

desperate for a club who promised so much more. They will say, you do not

sign up a great player like Di Maria in one week but this is not how it

was supposed to be at Manchester United this summer. Is the problem

that Real Madrid do not have to create a market because Manchester

United are desperate and that desperation means... It can increase

the desperation. If they say you have to bit higher than Paris. But

at the same time, Real Madrid could say, we know how desperate you are

to sign a player so it is irrelevant who else wants him, you have to pay

it. But maybe they are also desperate to sell. I think so

because the President said he was desperate to leave. I was surprised

at Manchester United, we said it would not leave it till the last

week of the men don't -- of the window because they will have

business done in the summer, they are such a big club, but now Madrid

can as such a big amount and Manchester will have to pay it. --

can demand such a big amount. Where can he play? He played deep for

Madrid in the midfield last season. And he also played on the left side

for Madrid last season so he can play in a couple of positions at it

depends. If you are playing three at the back, this could cause problems.

At the quality and the running ability he has, he will fit into

Manchester and they need this. What is interesting is that I think he

fits in to a 4-3-3 and it went Louis Van Gaal wants to play that -- and I

think. But he cannot do that because he already has Wayne Rooney and

Robin Van Persie so who is his main man? He is playing that system to

accommodate those players. And naturally, he would rather play

for-3-3. Messages coming again on the other big transfer about Mario

Balotelli -- coming in on. Balotelli, why not? If he helps to

get us into the Champions League, why not? For the price tag, is there

a risk which gave Mark not when we are talking about ?60 million for de

Maria and ?60 million for Mario Balotelli. I was with him and a lot

of the stuff you lead is not true. -- is there a risk arrest remarked

was he a problem to the players? Not at all, he is a big kid and he does

silly things in the changing room and he wins people up and the media

make a big thing about that. But the ?16 million, it is a bargain.

Characters are out of the draw now, there are no characters in the

dressing rooms, very robotic -- are out of the draw -- not in the game.

So it is frowned upon and he is an impact straightaway. It might be

what Liverpool needs. He is still young, 24, 25, Italy's main striker.

That is a great deal. The Sunday Times had a great article by Graeme

Souness. He talked about the Italian coach, a good coach, he worked very

hard to get a la telly on the straight and narrow -- Mario

Balotelli. He did his best to get him playing at the World Cup and he

asked what his one regret was and it was picking Mario Balotelli. I hope

it works at Liverpool, it could be a good club and Brendan Rodgers could

be a good manager for him. There is a reason it is ?60 million. Do they

not all have problems with him after a certain amount of time? He would

not have said the same thing about Mario Balotelli after the Euro

tournament. But you could argue he cost the manager his job at the

World Cup. You could argue that Italians also did that so if you

bring it back to his personality is a big kid, after a couple of years

of playing for your country and at a club, what if he gets bored? And he

is getting to that age. Maybe he needs to grow up and focus on his

football. I think Brendan Rogers is a great manager and he will be the

right man to sort him out. Brendan Rodgers has experience and a track

record of turning boys into men. The amount of characters he will have

had in Chelsea in the youth team, the amount of dysfunctional kids he

has had to nurture. He has had experience. Luis Suarez last season

was suspended for the first part of the season and he had the rest

season of his career. Daniel Sturridge, there are questions about

him. And Raheem Sterling. They did a documentary and one of the first

episodes was... That is why we hope this is the right club because we

want Mario Balotelli to be a success because we need stars in the Premier

League and it is great to have them in England. The comparison with him

and Luis Suarez is not right, Mario Balotelli has been more of a

liability on the pitch than Suarez. I watched him play against West

Bromwich and he got box. The manager was trying to get him off the pitch

but he got a second yellow card before he got the chance. -- he got

blocked. At Milan, the manager asked him not to get sent off again, there

was a booking in the first half. At half-time, he said, do not do

anything else. He gets a second yellow card and he has to go off.

Hopefully he will grow up and this is the right club but there is a

risk. In America, Brendan Rodgers said he categorically would not be

signing Mario Balotelli. Something has changed, it is a good price, he

is a good player. Every transfer is a risk, especially with the inflated

market now. Sanchez. There is a risk on every transfer. There are two

sides with a 100% record in the Premier League, one is Chelsea and

we will hear from Jose Mourinho, the other in Swansea. This is Garry Monk

who joins us live. Good afternoon. Thank you for joining us. What did

you work on this week from winning at Manchester United to taking on

Burnley at home? Was it a mental thing not to Garrett -- not to get

carried away Mr Mark very much so. -- carried away? Trying to get the

players to focus and in situations like that, it is about attitude. It

is a difficult start to the season when you lost your first game away

at Manchester United and your first home game is against a promoted side

and we knew it would be a tough game, they are full of confidence

and energy. We played well first half and in the second half, they

had nothing to lose and they went for it but our attitude got us

through it and three points. This was your first preseason at the

club, getting the team prepared, how difficult has it been to prepare

your side especially going into that Manchester United side and the

season ahead? I have had a plan and divided not have that and a way of

working to put across to the players, it would have been a

struggle. It has been hard and you learn by your mistakes but we had a

good pre-season and we went to America and we came back and did

some good work. It is always nice when players feel especially against

Manchester United, that some of the stuff we were working on, we had

success. That is important when you are trying to show them how to do

it. They believe in it more when they have success which was crucial

against Manchester and hopefully that set us up for the season. In

terms of the pre-season, of course it is hard and it is new, but I just

followed the plan and I made sure I stuck to it. As far as players

coming and going, is that finished? Are you happy or do you expect more

movement? Hopefully, we probably need two more signings to secure the

squad for a hard and long season. Two more would be great and we are

working on that this week and hopefully we can get them. If we get

injuries, we become quite thin on the ground. As Swansea are an

established Premier League club, I thought what Shaun Dykes said was

interesting about being promoted. -- Didier Drogba. But sometimes it

takes a while for players to believe they belong -- Sean Dyche. When we

got promoted, we played with freedom. We did not fear anything. I

spoke to him after the game and he spoke about it in the first half

that they were playing a bit with fear. The second half was extremely

difficult, they just let it go. They played with an attitude and nothing

to lose and we did that when we first came in. I said, it if you do

that for the majority of the game, you always have a chance -- if you

do that. And when people write you off, it gives you the motivation to

do that in every game. Thank you for your time, enjoy your afternoon.

The Swansea manager. Let's hear from the other side with a 100% record,

Chelsea and Jose Mourinho. I love my players and I respect them

a lot. But I try always to be superb fashion all and to think about my

club -- to be very professional. If I can be great to the club and the

players, that is the perfect situation for a manager. If I have

to choose between the club and the players, it have to choose always

the club. -- I have two. The point is not always the quality, Peter is

an amazing goalkeeper. What made me make this decision was the fact that

he is 22. He cannot lose that we cannot lose this player because we

do not give him the chance to play for ours -- we cannot lose this

player. If he does not play for Chelsea, he is a free agent. I made

a decision for the team and he is playing well, and Peter the same,

because he is a professional. He will lay. From September. -- he will

play. We will have competitions and matches every three days. Two

fantastic goalkeepers we have and I think Chelsea has two of the three

best. Kevin said, who is that? What was he

talking about? Jose Mourinho, Chelsea manager, talking about Peta

check and Thibaut Courtois. This message says, I feel sorry for the

Chelsea goalkeeper, he is still one of the best. What he has to look at

the future. to get into Peter's head, because he

is one of best in the world and he will want to play first team

football. Did you feel the same when it was you at Joe Hart at City. Yes,

I wasn't entirely happy about the situation and hence I moved. Being a

professional, you want to play matches. Cech is a top keeper. Is it

different as a keeper, because keepers tell me that you can't be

rotated in the same way full-backs can. Mourinho did mention they have

the European games and the League Cup and things, but I just think

there is not enough football for the two. Courtois is a fantastic keeper

and Mourinho had to make that decision ten years ago when Cech and

Cudicini were involved. He said Cech was the future. It is different both

were on a different level to Cudicini. Cech is on a different

level to what Cudicini was and he is still one of top keepers in the

world. We were quizzing Mourinho about this and he said this is a

good decision to have. It is a decision every club would want. We

can keep them both, because we are Chelsea. I think it will be

difficult to keep Cech. He op has two years -- only has two years s

left on his contract and he is one of the top keepers and Mourinho said

it is Courtois and Cech. Why would you want to have the best two

keepers and keep one on the bench? The problem Cech has, there is a

young phenomenon and I think Courtois will be the best keeper in

the world and Cech will probably have to go at some stage. Harry

said, Di Maria is a top signing and just what Manchester United have

needed since Ronaldo. Manchester United at the Stadium Of Light

today. The 4 o'clock game. Guy Mowbray is doing it for movtd 2

later. - Match of the Day later. And Gus Poyet, he has been talking about

the psychology of football and Sunderland shouldn't feel

comfortable that they have, well that they have got used to beating

Manchester United? They are used to it after last season. Winning at Old

Trafford for the first time since 1968 was a big deal and played a

part in them staying up. I remember the words he used before that game,

he said he needed a miracle to stay up last season and Louis van Gaal is

using the same word about a miracle for Manchester United to win the

league. Sunderland are comfortable. I have been around this club for

many years and they want to be more than comfortable. I look at their

squad and I find it such a contradiction all the way through. I

look at the striker, women Whickham and Fletcher. I think good but will

they get a bucket full of goals. There is no top match winner in

midfield. I look at the defence and wonder about the fitness of Brown

and O'Shea. I think the keepers are all right. But surely Sunderland

won't be in a relegation scrap. Will Manchester United look fair to

middling this afternoon? Still plenty of players missing and their

new signing does haven't a work permit. No, there has been an issue

with the Marcus Rojo. So we won't see him today. But it is a play hear

the is needed. I saw them play Swansea and they weren't great. It

underlined the work that Louis van Gaal has got to do with United.

Because I can see in these early weeks there is pressure on the front

players, the Mata, van Persie, Rooney triangle. Van Persie will be

back, but they have to perform. It just doesn't look all that great

when you look at that three and four in front of De Gea, who is an

excellent keeper. Mata, van Persie and Rooney are key and Mata

particularly. I didn't think he influenced the game. He didn't get

into the game with Swansea. He has got to have a big game today. Thank

you. To be fair to the Manchester United manager, before the season

started, Jason Burt, he did say my first three months at most clubs

expected to be, it is rough. So Manchester United fans expect it to

be rough. Yes, that is true. If you go back over his record at Munich

and Barcelona, it was a slow start. Munich in particular, he almost lost

his job in the autumn and there was talk of him going and they turned it

around and won the lying. The problem in the Premier League is

something Alex Ferguson mentioned, when Mourinho has almost changed the

lapped scape -- landscape, you can't play yourself into the league. You

have got to hit the ground running. Mourinho came in and won the league

and Chelsea were into their straps and up and running. Manchester

United have changed the way they play. Alex Ferguson had to change

the way the team played. He can't play himself into the league. Does

that mean if you can't ease yourself into a league, it is whatrd to

develop -- it is hard to develop youngsters if you're craving

immediate success. Manchester rut always craving success. They done so

well pre-season. Maybe some supporters thought it was just the

Louis van Gaal effect. But the wake up call was Swansea. They do need I

don't know how many players, four or five, six players to come in. If

they don't, then it will be another long slog for them. One thing you

hear from various people about the Manchester United way, I think every

club, 91 other clubs have tried to play the Manchester United way. When

you're a kid growing up you look at Giggs and Scholes and even Paul Ince

and Roy Keane. Now Manchester United may have to get real in the next

year or two and think we are going to make signings, but it must be

progression, not instant success. It won't come overnight for Louis van

Gaal and he is right in saying that. It will take time. What did you make

of Guy's club talking about Sunderland and saying he can't see

how it fits together. At Sunderland? Yes. I thought the job Gus Poyet did

last year was a minimiracle to get them out of the trouble they were.

He said he needs some more players. I think they have got a lot of

experience in the Premier League and maybe a few are ageing, but I think

they should be all right. I don't think they will be top half. But I

don't think they will be near the relegation zone. If Gus Poyet gets

the players he wants. Will be a big week for Sunderland in the transfer

mshg -- market. The Borini deal they thought was done. I am sure Brendan

Rodgers will sit down with Porrini -- Borini and say you have to go.

That is a good deal for Liverpool. If they can get 14 for Borini, 16

for Balotelli coming in, that is a good deal. It minimises the risk

more. Let's go back to White Hart Lane. Ian Brown has the team nows t

-- news. Tottenham are back from the heat of Cyprus where they played on

Thursday. A few of the star turns didn't travel there. So they should

be fresh. Adebayor and Ericsson among them. Two changes. Vertonghen

be fresh. Adebayor and Ericsson comes in and Chadly is in. QPR make

three changes and there are two newcomers, Isla comes in and Fer,

signed from Norwich, is in the midfield. Phillips start. Simpson

and Faulene on bench. You can listen to that on Five Live. Now more about

Balotelli and Liverpool, Manchester City against Liverpool is the big

game tomorrow. The greater question about Balotelli is how he would fit

into this Liverpool team. There is probably a question mark over a

couple of Liverpool players. Who would you have a question mark over?

I mean how he will fit the players, the Ricky Lamberts and others. Will

this push him further down the pecking order and it is interesting

to see how he will use the players. Against Southampton, they were poor

in the second half and Southampton should have won the game. They lost

it in the end, but they should have got something from the game. There

will be a few questions that will be asked of Liverpool over the next few

weeks if they're not getting results. Danny Murphy said he

thought they needed another midfielder. The problem they have a

bit, but they overachieved last year and now expect wakeses has gone --

expectations has gone through the roof and if they get in the top

four, I think it will be a UK is Cescful season. -- it will be a

successful season. It is fitting the right people in the right positions

and if Balotelli comes in will it be a swap for Luis Suarez and the

others around them. Luis Suarez could play on the left and right. I

don't think see that from Balotelli and I don't think Sturridge is keen

on doing that. They're both want to be the target man. This is the

dilemma that he will have. He is a very different player from Luis

Suarez. Going back to the original point. It is more about getting in a

good experienced striker, Champions League striker to bolster the squad.

Would you bring in a midfielder? I thought Lucas was going to go this

summer. I think at the moment, I'm surprised he started last week. But

that is an area they do need to look at. He is a good player. He will be

another addition. Manuel Pellegrini has told his players these games are

the six pointers. Your title rivals at home, you can put a big gap

between you and your rivals. They look like they were in cruise

control at Newcastle last week. Yes, it was a great start. A lot of the

players were away at the World Cup too and there were question marks

about how they would start the season. But it was a well deserved

victory. Tomorrow will be interesting, it is a shame Balotelli

isn't signed for that game. It would add that extra spice going back to

Manchester City. But you know it is even's probably building it up to be

one of the games of season and hopefully it will be. Sometimes you

can build them up too much. The players they bring in at City seem

to hit the ground running. Fernandinho did it last season.

Fernando did it last week, he came in and was calm and settled as if he

had been there for years. You go back to comparison with Manchester

United, City have done a lot of their business early. The two big

deals of Fernando and Eliaquim Mangala. Fernando is a perfect

player for them. They have done the deals early. People say Manchester

City had a quiet summer, they haven't, they picked up players.
