Good afternoon. We are on BBC One and the BBC sport website this lunch

time. We have John Monson, former Everton and Republic of Ireland

midfielder Kevin Kilbane and England and Chelsea two Eni Aluko. In the

next 45 minutes this is what we will be discussing. Rooney sees red,

Diego Costa cannot stop scoring, Frank Lampard is still scoring for

Manchester City, Derby day deadlock on Mars -- Merseyside and in north

London. And no joking matter, is his job on the line? Wayne Rooney and

the Ryder Cup dominating the back pages today. The Sunday express has

a picture of him celebrating his goal yesterday. The Sunday Times

have done a massive interview with him, before the red card. Including

the quote "have I fulfilled my potential? " The mirror focusing on

Frank Lampard. Interesting from Rob Draper in the mail on Sunday,

talking about Arsenal's Academy. Saying that Arsene Wenger must start

again with his academy plans. And inside they focus on Alan Pardew.

Saying that David Moyes is apparently being lined up to replace

Alan Pardew. Before we get to force an rain Rooney -- false on Wayne

Rooney we can hear from Louis van Gaal. Yes, it was a break-out of a

set play of hours. He makes a professional foul, I think. You can

call it bad. - hours -- ours. I do not think Wayne wanted to do it like

this but he did it and you can give the red card. Do you think that was

a professional foul? I think he intended it as a professional foul,

it was a counterattack. Four recovering defenders so why did he

do that? I think it was reckless. There was no need for him to lash

out. A professional foul, you have being taught it is a bit discreet.

The problem was it was reckless. It was violent. Sakho did a similar

foul and got a yellow card. You were there, talking to Manchester United

fans, some of them thought it should only have been yellow. It was the

height. Absolutely, I was besieged by fans at the ground and hotel

saying it was harsh. In the end I said, watch mansion that a and C

where he catches him. -- watch and you will see where he catches him. I

thought Rooney lost his temper. I thought there had been a

half-hearted appeal for handball against West Ham and we have seen

Rooney do this before. It was the red mist again. It's looks awful,

Kevin, every time you see it. There was red mist? We have seen it from

him before. He talks about being more mature or on and off the pitch.

As a captain you need to have that maturity. I would not want to

condemn him for that because he scored a great goal, if I am looking

at the positive side, I know that the foul, you are talking about the

discrete files, Rooney could have clipped his heels. -- discreet

fouls. He will get a three-game ban and justifiably so. Overall, Wayne

Rooney in great form, that is probably when he is in his best

form, on the edge. We have seen that from him for 15 years. Do have to

take into account, I know it is the new age, but he is the captain not

only of Manchester United, but also of England and there was a time of

people would say he should set a better example. Is that why, for

example, if it had been Stewart Downing on Wayne Rooney, I know for

a fact we would not have started the show with that. Even if Wayne Rooney

was not Manchester United and England captain we could still have

started with it because he is Wayne Rooney but given he has the

captaincy, is that a good enough reason to be discussing it first

question my van Gaal said he has some special treatment because he is

captain. So he has to accept the responsibility as well. That is

exactly right, any player who has worn the armband for Manchester

United knows the weight of expectations. Rooney knows that. I

look at it both ways. Everybody will talk about it and he can continue

being Wayne Rooney, people can leave him alone. But it could be really

bad in the sense that now people are questioning whether he can be

Manchester United and England captain because of this kind of

behaviour. I think he is going to have to learn and grow into the

role. And learned that you cannot really make rash decisions like

that. But United won the game so van Gaal is smiling. If they had not won

the game again, throwing more points you way like against Leicester, it

would not have sat well with him. But he can move on, but he now has

to be without Rooney fit the games coming up. "Rooney should never have

been given captaincy, he does not have the temperament". People saying

they are making a mountain out of a mole Hill. For temperament,

inconsistent form. Not the qualities I look for. I know what you're

saying about England captaincy, but a lot of captains have not been

angels. Even going back to the 60s and 70s they were not angels. But

not many were sent off twice playing for England. It is a different game.

I accept this is a new era. I'm just reflecting the view of quite a few

of our older viewers. I read Matt Dickinson, a book on Bobby Moore,

one of the passages that was serialised including Bobby Moore

going out and rather than going round about, went over the round

about, left his car on the roundabout disappeared. If an

England captain did that today, it would not just be on the back pages.

And that is the scrutiny Wayne Rooney is under. I do not want to

condemn him, blowing it out of proportion. I get that it was try

break-out plate but it was more how high the tackle was. All he was

trying to do was stop an attack. I know there were bodies back, Phil

Neville pointed that out, there were bodies back for United. I remember

right gigs doing a similar thing against Arsenal. You want geeks

taken out early and they did not do that. He scored that wonderful goal.

It is what can happen. "Why is the media treating him like this? "

Nemanja Vidic, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane are described as fearless

leaders. His captaincy has just started. " He was everywhere for the

60 minutes, he missed one tackle and everyone is acting like the bloke

killed someone close. Kevin's point is that if United had not held on it

would have been a different matter. Wayne Rooney after the game was

probably very relieved. It actually takes away slightly from the fact he

could have cost his team three points. They were unlucky not to

score. If they had not won the game, that is a completely different

story. We would be saying he has cost his team the game. And one

other point, forgetting it was Rooney, the referee was in a very

good position, Lee Mason will stop from where he was that tackle

definitely came under the heading of violent or reckless conduct. The law

says that is a red card whether it is Wayne Rooney or anybody else. On

the offside would you have been disappointed question my it is

clearly offside. You have seen the pictures. If you are marginally

offside you offside. I understand Big Sam but clear cut your offside.

For everything you go back, you see replays afterwards and you will be

able to scrutinise it, but Kevin Nolan was offside. It is probably a

correct decision technically speaking. It is the correct

decision. But from the striker 's perspective it is incredibly harsh.

There has been goal scored. He reached the stage now where if

something has a fingernail ahead the flag goes up. There was a man in

charge of the FAA called Philip Don -- FA. He recommended to Fifa that

the law should say, is their daylight? That would clarify the

situation. You have to give the assistant credit, so many times you

miss the decision. If ripping a different story if it had gone

against United but he got the decision right, spot on. Great

decision. If that had gone against UU would have said, well done,

linesmen. Of course! Let's move on to Chelsea. Another three points and

another goal from Diego Costa. Jose Mourinho. Know, the gamble is to

play him in consecutive matches without a minimum of a week to

recover from his situation. The accumulation is the problem. The

human nation that made him -- the accumulation. But we are not giving

him that because he is not playing three matches in a week. He has had

15 shots on target in six games. Three shots on target more than

Aston Villa in that game yesterday. And yet we keep being told that he

is not fully fit. That is the scary problem. His movement in the box, to

create space for himself, the goal he scored yesterday was brilliant

movement. But he is doing that time and again. If he is not fit what is

he going to be like at 100%? You cannot see any other striker,

Ronaldo, maybe Messi, but Premier League football there is no better.

He has this hamstring treatment, you are at Chelsea, the same medical

facilities, do you think Chelsea are going about this the right way,

managing it the right way, playing him once a week? I think behind this

is they will be doing a lot of recovery work with him. He is

Chelsea's best player at the moment and Diego Costa probably wants to

play. When I am 70 or 80 cents fit I say to my manager, I want to play,

even if the medical staff say you should have a rest. With the

international break I am sure Mourinho will put his foot down and

say he needs a break. This is a good time to have one. With your

hamstrings, as you just said, at 80% fit, how does that affect you

mentally when you go onto the field? Is there any doubt in your mind that

it might pop? There is doubt. But I think with all of the recovery

methods we do these days with ice bats, protein shakes and everything

-- Bath 's. It makes you feel psychologically ready and you have

to trust you are ready. If you are feeling it you have to say, I cannot

be selfish. But a lot of players want to go out there and see whether

they can hold up and if they are struggling they will come off. Will

the international breaks be used more and more given how supposedly

easy it is going to be to qualify for Euro 2016? We will come onto

Raheem Sterling later. Well a lot of clubs be trying to pull players with

a little niggle here and there out of those qualifiers? I think that

goes both ways. Some players now can see the country, not just England,

Scotland, Wales and Ireland getting through to the finals of 2016. Some

of the players will perhaps wants to play in what would have been in the

past the kind of international they might have discreetly and

diplomatically pulled out of. Kevin you are the best person to answer

that. Do you not think there is an incentive now the players to play

those internationals that might not always have been there?

If you are looking at Ireland, Scotland and Wales, they

realistically have a good chance of qualification. But when you are

looking at Spain, the likes of England, these nations will qualify.

Jose Mourinho could lean on the coaches of the national teams and

say, can we have him for two weeks, he will be back and fresh for your

next international in two weeks. That is the discussions that will go

on. If you are going to get Diego Costa back fully fit after a couple

of weeks off, you will get an awesome player. Whilst I take your

point he will want to play every game, there must be part of him

thinking, if I want to get my hamstring right then maybe I can do

without playing against Luxembourg? They are not difficult games, they

are games Spain would expect to win. Jose Mourinho's perspective, he

could think this is again he could miss and the national Spanish coach

may say the same thing. Hopefully they can get him fit. Who knows what

will happen because he has been frightening with eight goals. He

wants to play himself. So many players given half the excuse not to

play, they will not play. He is pushing to be played every week. You

have to give him credit for that. There is quite a few out the top

level now, given an excuse, they will miss again. This is not the

strongest team Chelsea have assembled, they are not unstoppable

at the moment. How would you rate the strength of this squad? It is

similar to 2005 and 2006. Perhaps it is going down to number 18, 19 and

20 being better players than they were then. If this Diego Costa thing

continues the way it is, Loic Remy is a very good replacement. I don't

think they will suffer too much like that. I think the Chelsea team he is

putting out now is more focused than the Chelsea team of last season.

Diego Costa is one of the reasons. Jose Mourinho said to me, he is

scoring the kind of goals we could not get last season, despite having

the creative players like Hazard, Oscar and everybody else. You can

get in touch with the programme, particularly Manchester City fans on

Frank Lampard. Do you think Chelsea will look at this at a moment, it

has only been one week. Do you think Chelsea will be thinking, we should

have kept him? It is always the risk when an X player plays against their

old club. The risk of them scoring and showing them up a bit. I think

Frank Lampard was a bit embarrassed to score against Chelsea. He scored

again yesterday so he is proving he is still a Premiership player. He

has come out and said he wanted to stay at Chelsea, had they offered

him a contract. Everyone moves on and Chelsea made their decision. But

it will be interesting if Manchester City do keep him because he is meant

to be going to New York. But he is proving he is still getting the

goals and Chelsea will be looking and thinking, maybe we should have

kept him. But they got Cesc Fabregas. A different sort of

player, but is there a conspiracy theory, the possibility that as I

understand it, Manchester City's owners own the New York club and he

is only on loan. Do you think if Manchester City were top of the

league in early January, Manuel Pellegrini and the powers that be

might say, hang on a minute, we want him to stay here? That is what

happens when city are buying these big clubs around the world. Can we

keep him? It'll be Frank Lampard's decision as well. But he has scored

four goals already. You know full well Frank Lampard will get double

figures and that could be massive Manchester City. Do you think there

is anything wrong doing that? I feel sorry the city, they thought they

were selling him to... But they did not offer him another contract, they

cannot dictate where he goes. I understand that, but they let him go

for a reason. They think he has gone off to a different club in New York.

He is out of the country. Now all sudden, Manchester City can get him

back. He is an English player, a homebred player so he comes under

the quota of the English rule as well. Off the back of that, I can

understand both sides. Manchester City will be desperate to keep him

because of the goals. They have David Silva, yah yah Toure, they

will create chances for him. He finishes so well. You could argue,

it would a similar to Manchester City letting a youngster going

abroad, and then Chelsea saying we like the look of him. Then bringing

that player to Stamford Bridge. That seems to be have football is going.

Usually with loan deals there is always a clause in the deal were a

lone player cannot play against their old club. Perhaps from

Chelsea's perspective looking into the future that could have been a

clause for Frank Lampard. If you sign for Manchester City or an

affiliated club to Manchester City, you cannot play in the Premier

League. That would get very complicated. It is a regular thing

in loan deals. There is the chance for the player for it to become a

permanent deal because if they do well and score goals and prove they

are at that level, they can play. Frank Lampard is in a winning

situation. If he keeps playing well for Manchester City he can be in the

Premier League, if he doesn't, he can go and play for New York City.

Manuel Pellegrini has said it is inevitable that at some stage that

Manchester City will win the Champions' League and they take on

Roma this week? That is, as company-macro said, they have one 2

Championships, they have one the FA Cup and the Champions' League is the

focus for the people that matter at Manchester City. This is their next

major ambition. Manuel Pellegrini has said we may not do it this

year, but he is expected to lead them further than they have ever

been before. They have never got to a semifinal in that competition and

this is a test this season. Lots of messages coming in from Southampton

fans. They have hit the ground running. Surely it has to be Ronald

Koeman, their movements is class. They have won six games on the trot

including the game at Arsenal. Good afternoon James, thanks for talking

to others. The atmosphere around the club must be fantastic a moment? Of

course, to be second in the Premier League is beyond our wildest dreams.

We had a great start to the season last year and a difficult summer

with players coming and going and it is credit to the club with all of

the staff and the players who have come together and shown the quality

and we deserve to be there. In the chaos of the summer, what was the

first thing Ronald Koeman said to you as a group of players? He said

not to worry about the goings-on in the summer, just concentrate on

football. The way he has brought in the right sort of players, players

who have adapted well to the Premier League and have settled into the

team and there is a real good chance the team will grow together. Is

training different under him? Physically it is. Pochettino liked

to press a bit more and lots of running sessions into the afternoon.

But this manager there is lots of short, sharp work. You can see the

difference in our performance. We are showing signs we can battle it

out in the top half of the Premier League. James I was at Anfield at

the start of the season for your game. You showed me you were more

than capable of competing. Did you take a lot of confidence although

you lost, I thought you should have taken a point at least, if not won

that game. Did you take a lot of confidence going forward? In the

changing room after the game, we felt we had won the game. First goal

of the season against some of the players we have sold. I think we

showed great character amongst the team, stick together. We went to a

club who had a great season last year. I think we showed why where we

are now. I know you are injured now, a lot of Southampton fans will want

to know how long you will be out? Around ten weeks, I have an

operation tomorrow. Then it is just rehabilitation. It will be a big

test for me, this is my first big injury. It will be a test of my

character and how I deal with it. I am itching to get back already and

it gives me the chance to work on other things I have never worked on

before, so I will come back fitter and stronger and be able to get into

the team. And outs of the sensational goals, Jagielka that

Everton, which would you give as goal of the month costume mark

definitely Gratiano. He has settled into the Premier League and we have

seen some excellent finishes in training so it was nice to see him

do that yesterday. We wish you well with your rehabilitation and we

appreciate the time you have taken to talk. What has benefited

Southampton is having the new manager, so the whole thing feels

like a fresh start will stop yes, with so many players leaving the

Southampton, there was a risk the changing room would be depleted.

Some players wanted to leave but had to stay. Ronald Truman has come in

and said focus on the football, we are moving forward with a new team

and new philosophy. I'm sure they will keep growing. They have

replaced Rickie Lambert and Pella has scored. Jagielka, it was the

last minute of the game and he just hit it. It was a great strike.

Jagielka will probably never score that kind of goal again. So you are

giving it to Jagielka? I think I will go Pella, because I have seen

him play. People said you can score goals in the Dutch league, but when

he comes to the Premier League he will find it hard. But he has fitted

in as well as any striker other than Diego Costa, but better than any

other player that has come from overseas. His first touch to set

himself up for that was outstanding. I will go with Jagielka. A lot of

people will say you have to put the context of the game, the occasion.

Technically, you would go with Pella, but in the last minute of the

Merseyside derby, for Jagielka to do that was brilliant. It was hugely

important for Everton, psychologically more than anything

else to get coming out of back game, otherwise questions would have

been asked? I don't think any side were able to exert themselves. They

both looked nervous and gave the ball away. Liverpool were probably

more threatening on the counterattack. I think the draw

probably was the right result. Liverpool looked a bit more dominant

and more threatening in the last third. But Everton defended well and

kept the ball well. Brendan Rodgers had the demeanour on the final

whistle of a man who had lost. I heard you say that, and I thought

that could be a significant goal in Liverpool's season, but Jagielka

goal. At the moment, they have lost Suarez, Daniel Sturridge is injured

and the back four is still looking vulnerable. It just makes me wonder,

I am not so sure Steven Gerrard saying this will be our year to win

the league. I am not convinced. Does a draw in the north London derby as

questions of Arsenal? They will probably be happy with the

draw as opposed to Liverpool being disappointed. They have 20 minutes

after that on goal to score and it would have been a disaster for

Arsenal. But I still do not think Arsenal have the bite in front of

goal. Heck of a dummy from Bell back. He might be claiming the

assist. -- Welbeck. He has to get some confidence. That is the sign of

a striker informed, Arsenal have to get that with Welbeck. George

Graham, former manager of both teams, was quite critical of

Arsenal, saying they should not be aiming, top four is a given, the

title should be the aim. Those derby games convinced me that not one of

those teams will win the league, I am even more convinced Manchester

City and Chelsea will eventually move away and it will be between

them. I totally agree, I have seen Arsenal ended up and they are not of

the same standard as city and Chelsea. Looking down at and

Everton, where they finished last season, just behind. I cannot see

those sides able to compete, this season is going to be about United

may be pushing the top four but it will be about city and Chelsea. Mail

on Sunday here, saying they must start again with the Academy. They

have this new Dutchman, who was an assistant to Louis van Gaal, he says

Arsenal want talented players coming through because that has been

lacking. They want to develop players better than before. Quite a

damning statement about previous regimes. To be honest, if you asked

which clubs had a problem bringing thrilling as players I would not say

it was Arsenal. Oxlade-Chamberlain, he came from Southampton, but he

came into the youth system. Jack Wilshere, I forget his name, the

left-back. Kieran Gibbs. These are young players that are Arsenal

through and through. I suppose every club can always work on bringing

through English players because it is an international league. Clubs

always wants to bring in internationals. I wonder whether we

take that with a pinch of salt in the same way that whenever a new

manager takes over they always say these players are not fit enough.

You have 2 to find something wrong with the previous regime. When I

first covered Arsenal they always had the best schoolboys, David

Rocastle, Michael Thomas, they won the league at Anfield under George

Graham. Then in a different phase, Wenger inherited the back four and

went out and thought in the Gerry Henris and Patrick Vieiras. --

Sierra -- Thierry Henrys. Inode Liam Brady quite well from Ireland, he

put everything into developing those players. He has had a say in these

players because he has had to try and help developments. One other

quote, Steve Morrow came and asked me what type of players I wanted him

to look for so I said the best player I have worked on, Xavi. This

is a bugbear of mine, I kind of think, all academies seem to be

looking for the same type of players. It is all those players.

Robotic. Why does an academy boss not saying I want Vincent Kompany?

Kevin Kilbane? LAUGHTER Up and down? No. You are looking for

the robotic type, players now coming through our very robotic, very

similar sort of players. I think all of a sudden now you get players

coming in who can make a difference, Jimmy Carrico, these type of

players. These are championship winning players. You need them in

your side if you want to win the titles. That is what it is. Roy

Keane, these sorts of players are what you need when you are winning

titles. You are looking at those sort of players but you cannot win

with them. It depends on the club philosophy. I watched Liverpool and

Everton yesterday and John Stones was outstanding. You could say he

was the next Tim Cahill this? Gary Cahill. But for Arsenal or Everton,

they have Ross Barkley. Different club floss of these will want to

bring through different types of English players. He is perfect for

the Arsenal playing style. I think what the manager once, he might say,

he might prefer to bring through the Xavi or Vincent Kompany. If you look

at John Stones, Ross Barkley, you have Gareth Barry, doing the dirty

side of it. West Brom against Burnley is the afternoon game here.

The two lowest scoring sides in the Premier League. Dot-macro they

played quite well at Tottenham. Everybody said it was about on the

performance, but for the first time they had 11 new players, West Brom,

the most of anybody. Alan Irvine had to try to mould them and it will

take some time. I saw some little signs of recovery last week against

Tottenham and Albion have always been described as a yo-yo club but

this is their fifth consecutive year in the Premier League so they have

settled, just a matter of whether he can shake this new team. Different

mentality at Spurs with nothing to lose whereas now you have promoted

side at home. In the six games against the promoted sides last year

they only won one of them. Burnley will do what West Brom did last week

against Tottenham, they will set off and tried to break. The onus is on

West Brom today and that is a different mindset from their point

of view. They have not scored since the opening game of the season. They

are struggling for goals which is always a problem when you are just

looking to stay up. That striker, even though 1-0, you need to put it

in the net. If you are a Lukas Jutkiewicz, who has come up from the

championship, if you are coming up you need the first goal in the top

flight to get your confidence. 's to settle your nerves and make you

realise you can do it. I can score goals in this league and I can score

for this team. Just one and hopefully they can kick on. How

nervous will Alan Pardew be going into the Monday night game? This

story seems to have come and gone. I bumped into Mike Ashley, somebody

said, what chance has it got of keeping his job and Mike, who has a

distinct sense of humour, said, he was one game away from the sack but

they were saying that last week. Everybody would access including

Alan Pardew, he is not the most secure manager in the Premier

League. Stoke-Newcastle is an interesting one.

League. Stoke-Newcastle is an patches they are coming into a bit

from home, that is unlike Stoke. The Sunday Mirror saying David Moyes is

from home, that is unlike Stoke. The being lined up for Newcastle. That

will not go away from budget. I think last week they showed a little

bit of bottle last week to get that result, Papiss Cisse comes on, he

has not been scoring. Give Alan Pardew credit. There is a negative

feeling around the place. David Moyes would go there? I don't know.

Do you have an inkling, do you know him? It is the sort of job. Have you

spoken to him, basically! I have not. He would be the first to say, a

manager in the job, I would not want to be speculating because he has

respect for other managers but it is the sort of job that if he did go

into he would thrive on. It is his sort of job where he would need to

galvanise a club that has been struggling. He wants to be in charge

of a thing like he was at Manchester United but at the moment the

Newcastle system indicates that is not the case. If he was to go

there, I appreciate Pardew is still in the job, he would expect things

to change? Perhaps that is a conversation he has to have with

Mike Ashley if he is in the running for the job. David Moyes would be

more suited to a club like Newcastle, it is the same as

Everton. Expectation was too big him at Manchester United. But at

everything he did well. He made the team stabling the top half of table.

Newcastle would be a better fit for him and maybe his style of

management. Neil Lennon could be a candidate if it came to that but

Alan Pardew has been digging his heels in. It cannot be easy coming

out and doing those interviews when you are that far-away people say

from this being your last game. I think it becomes a good Monday night

game. These comments come out after what has been a better week the

Newcastle. Would you go for Newcastle or Stoke? I will go for

the draw. I cannot see beyond the draw, sitting on the fence. Let's

finish by talking about the Indian women, they have qualified for the

World Cup winning all ten matches in qualifying. Do you look at that,

playing devils advocate, as a brilliant performance or that you

were not tested? You could say that but I think the age-old saying that

you have 2 beta who is in front of you. We scored a lot of goals and

only conceded once. That is a response to Mark Sampson, his

playing style. It is a very attacking playing style, we talked a

lot about bravery and courage. Just as players in general we are having

to really force ourselves to be creative and do new things. That has

happened as a result of us scoring more. Does that go against instinct,

forcing yourself to be more creative. Maybe in the past that has

been stifled? I would say so, playing styles are different under

different managers. Players being safe under different managers. Mark

putts playing style, he talks about just being brave, if you're going to

make a mistake at least you have the intent to try to attack and score

goals and for a strike a striker you need that. You need to say, I will

have ten shots and hopefully one or two will go with rather than only

shooting when you think it will definitely go in. In terms of our

qualification that has been a real aspect of it. The attacking aspect
