Blues v Edinburgh Pro12 Rugby

A brand-new season and a brand-new ambition. Whatever way you look at

it, Edinburgh had a poor one last time around. Promising start but a

stuttering finished meant they finished ninth in the Pro12. Alan

Solomons' men hope to do better this time around. Good to have a clue

with us. Brand-new season and live rugby on BBC Two Scotland. Also

extended highlights of defending champions Connacht against 2014

champions Glasgow. Look away now if you don't want to know the result.

Interesting reading indeed from a Scottish point of view. Andy Nichol,

former Scotland scrum-half is here again, and Finn Russell, current

Glasgow and Scotland stand-off. The last time we saw you in eight ask a

shirt was against Connacht in the semifinal of the Pro12. A horrible

head injury, played 53 seconds but you are looking fit. Will we see you

soon in a shirt again? It was about 56 seconds! Did some contact,

feeling good now. Hopefully back within the next few weeks. I think

he went missing for three seconds. Great to see you back. Probably as

bad an injury as we have looked at in the last number of seasons. Great

that he will be back in the next few weeks. Talking about this game for

Edinburgh. They had a great start last season. Against Glasgow in the

1872 cup, they looked fantastic but fell away at the end of the season.

Ninth isn't good enough. It isn't. And with the two Italian size, that

second bottom. Only the Dragons below them. For a well funded team,

they have good players. The forwards, Dickinson, Ford, WP Nel,

Hardy, that's a really strong foundation that they should have.

They have lost Matt Scott this year. They have made some interesting

signings. Duncan Weir has come from Glasgow. Glenn Bryce, and a couple

of centres today that we don't know too much about. They are unknown

behind the pack, but in that pack, they are very strong. You know

Duncan Weir playing at Glasgow for many years as a number ten. You

shared that shirt for Glasgow and Scotland. What will he bring it

about Edinburgh team? Duncan is a great player. I learned a lot from

him. I came a few years at after him and it was great to learn and watch

from him. He's back out there and doing his thing. Edinburgh threw it

out quite a lot against Newcastle, so we will see what happens against

Cardiff on the 4G pitch. Any team needs a good stand-off to run the

game. Edinburgh don't really have that, they used to have a 12 playing

a ten position. Now Duncan Weir is in there he can manage the game

which they don't do particularly well. With that foundation of the

pack they've got, I think Duncan could have a great season because he

will have a platform. This guy was in and out the team, and in the

Scotland team. Having a player of that quality with Jason Toby out,

Duncan will get the nod every week. They have managed the process very

well at Glasgow, changing on an almost weekly basis. But a stand-off

playing every week, you get into a rhythm. It starts to flow. I think

Duncan will really enjoy having a run of games to really set a mark

down there at Edinburgh. It's a big move along the motorway, he's a

proud Glaswegian, and he's now playing for Edinburgh. It's a very

astute signing for Edinburgh. We can head down to Cardiff now. It should

be a cracker. We'll Duncan Weir start off with a flyer? Edinburgh

started very well last season. We can join Colin Gregor and John BT.

COMMENTATOR: Should be a great game. It looks lovely but it has been

bucketing all day at Cardiff, the pitch is soaking wet. The Edinburgh

front row, all internationals. And in the backs, Duncan Weir has

crossed the M8 to join Edinburgh. Rasolea, wouldn't like to come

across him on a dark night. Cardiff Blues though, they have quite a

record here. Winning 80% of their home matches last season, doing the

double over Edinburgh. Not a big crowd but plenty of big names, and

there is one of them, Nick Williams, the former Ulster number eight. As

they walked out onto this famous pitch, now all-weather. The PA

announcer is winding up here. The monster trucks behind us in the

major stadium now, should be getting a big, big game. There is Williams.

A really abrasive number eight. The pack, familiar faces all round. Rhys

Gill, Myhill and Filise,. Plenty of pace in the backs. The USA wing

Blaine Scully, as well as Cory Allen and former chief Rey Lee-Lo. Tom

James is a flyer on the wing. Experienced Lions prop Gethin

Jenkins, you will start his 17th season of pro rugby.

The referee is John Lacey of Ireland. The assistants are Stuart

Gavigan and Rhys Thomas. The TMO is Jeff Mark. Edinburgh playing

left-to-right. Williams, a short ball. Navidi is

there. Cook, the big second row. And

Williams showed a touch but it goes in off big Glenn Bryce. The

full-back. It will be a throw into the Blues. You can see Cardiff

trying to get into position to get a kick away to relieve pressure. Great

first effort and defence from Edinburgh, putting pressure on the

kicker. Unfortunately the half charge down that Glenn Bryce

couldn't get hold of it, gives Cardiff and out with their own

line-out. Williams knocks it on from Myhill. Edinburgh in possession.

Here comes Scholes. The conditions tonight will be difficult, won't

they? Because Cardiff Blues will be confident, thinking they can beat

Edinburgh, but if they keep making mistakes like that, there's a

chance. Nick Williams dropped the kick-off, the ball went through his

hands, and his first chance to carry, make a name for himself as a

Cardiff Blues player, he has knocked the ball on. Great initial attacking

opportunity. I think we can see the artificial surface down here,

because it's been wet all day, it will be greasy and the ball will be

slippy. It's important for Edinburgh to get their scrums sorted and go

through the basics. The front row, Sutherland, Ford and

WP Nel. Behind them, McKenzie, Gilchrist and

Ritchie. The two Edinburgh centres are quite flat. Expecting to see one

of them take a fairly short ball off Duncan Weir and set a platform.

Edinburgh looking for and getting the early penalty. It's exactly what

the forwards want, just asserting their dominance there. We talked a

lot last year about just how dominant the Edinburgh forward pack

are. They will want to stake a claim straight off the bat here. A chance

for Duncan Weir to get his first points in the red of Edinburgh.

Looking at the BP Nell's back, how straight it is. Rhys Gill couldn't

cope. And a penalty against the big Blues loosehead prop. Duncan Weir

then, the man from Glasgow. Calm, assured, steady. The ball goes

straight between the posts. Edinburgh into an early lead. Scrum

dominance is the first card they play. Yeah, Duncan Weir made himself

some fans in Edinburgh already. Those sort of Pixar bread and butter

for him. An excellent striker of the ball. It's good for Scottish rugby

he's made the move across to Edinburgh. You want your top players

playing regularly. Finn Russell at Glasgow. Duncan Weir at Edinburgh

and also Jackson at Harlequins. The more competition the better. I think

it's still strange seeing him in an Edinburgh jersey. Good kick taken by

Fischer Dan Fish. Lee-Lo with a longer pass into

midfield. A trio of ball carriers for the Blues. Filise misses out.

Edinburgh defending. Blues going left-to-right and right-to-left.

Williams seems to have caught that. Third time lucky, just caught that

one. Abrasive hooker, Myhill, good runner. Trying to get width.

Shingler. That's a good kick. These

full-backs, Dan Fish and Bryce will be exchanging kicks. Into the

midfield with Duncan Weir. The Cardiff crowd quite liked that one.

Taken by Cory Allen, another sevens star, didn't quite get into the

final Team GB seven is set up, but it pops out the back. Shingler has

the other wing forward. He has Jenkins outside him. Picked up this

time by Rasolea. The knock-on there was a big gap in the defence. It was

a big gap. Edinburgh's defence was a bit slow to get set. From a fairly

standard play, Cardiff coming out the back. We see a bit of a gap and

Gilchrist doesn't bite in with the rest of the forwards. To be honest,

it should be a try. Edinburgh should finish that. Just gets himself in

the way a little bit, Glenn Bryce, no way it's a deliberate knock-on,

but gets in the way of the pass goes to ground. Cardiff in a strong

attacking position. Edinburgh again putting pressure on the scrum to see

what they can get, get at the Cardiff scrum-half. It's a good

Cardiff Blues back division. Scully, the USA back wing. Cory Allen had

nine weeks with the Team GB sevens squad. Rey Lee-Lo is the other

centre. Former Chiefs player. There is too much weight, you are leading

in. Not supporting your weight. John Lacey not happy with the front rows.

Edinburgh, the game last year was predicated on a successful set

piece. They set it on that dominance upfront. The two games against

Glasgow, that's what set that up. They need to add another dimension

to their game and kick on. Changes in the back might initiate that.

Tomos Williams the Shingler, with a long ball out to Cory Allen. The

left winger James, the flyer. His big brother is a heavyweight boxing

champion. Jenkins, the joint Captain of the team. A shorter ball.

Williams looking up. He's an abrasive hooker, Myhill. Longer ball

again. Shingler looks inside. Sells the dummy and everybody buys it. To

be frank, dreadful defending. A little bit soft from Edinburgh.

Cardiff not doing anything particularly special. Shingler, just

the value of carrying the ball in two hands and being gay little bit

light on his feet. He has the option inside, Lee-Lo lining up behind him.

The prop as well. And that is poor defending. Rasolea bytes in. Because

of that, the guy beside him has to jam in. That's a defensive error

from Rasolea. Smooth landing on our flights down I

think! A statement of intent from the Cardiff Blues. 7-3. Scrum

dominance. The biting in of the defender took the dummy. The man who

joined from Western Force, Rasolea just bit in. You have to credit

Lee-Lo for giving the inside option. Rasolea is worried about these

ball-carriers but good recognition from Shingler that the dummy was

bought and he goes in a bit too easily. Edinburgh kick off.

Glenn Bryce thinks about it but let it bounce out of play. A lot is

expected from Glenn Bryce, a big, strong ball-carrier. I'm surprised

Glasgow let him go. He might have wanted the opportunity to play more

rugby. A really dangerous attacking runner. Good opportunity to get

gametime at Edinburgh. His left foot sidestep is particularly dangerous.

Hopefully from counterattack and broken field, we will see him with

ball in hand and he can start carving up. The last time we saw

Ross Ford on the BBC, he was injured out in Japan. Had a calf muscle

injury. Good throw from him, pinpoint accuracy. He lends the

weight and support. Watson, pick and go, knocked on and turned over.

Another error from Edinburgh. Kick on by the man on the left wing,

James. Nathan Fowles. Nearly had half his top half taken off by

Williams. Turnover ball. It's not going Edinburgh's way. It's not.

Just try to set out a platform in midfield and Hamish Watson gets

turned over. Good recognition from Tom James, the kick in behind. It's

not that good a kick. Edinburgh ineffective at the breakdown. Nathan

Fowles did well to get back and tidy up. He is penalised for holding on.

Edinburgh need to get themselves into this game. Just now, the errors

creeping into the game and letting Cardiff onto the front foot.

Interested spectator. I wonder if he watched James Hogg, as we did on the

Internet earlier. A fewer this at Glasgow are staking a claim. -- a

few others at Glasgow. This ancient team of Cardiff, now the Blues,

formed way back in 1876, beating the All Blacks and South Africa. 75

associated clubs under their control and development. Shingler. Relaxed

kick, but relaxed too much and to the right of the posts. Edinburgh

breathe a sigh of relief. I expect Duncan Weir will probably go along

with the restart to try to relieve some pressure. Make Cardiff play

from a little bit deeper. Cardiff Blues, Williams, they keep

possession perfect. Given the conditions we have here. Edinburgh,

just holding Cardiff up. That's really important just to get back

into this match. This first 13 minutes started brightly but then

certainly Cardiff in the ascendancy. That's exactly what Edinburgh

needed. They just slowed down Cardiff's ball, allowing Edinburgh

to apply on line speed to the next Cardiff phase. Looking predictable

with the one pass game. Trying to generate a quick ball but Edinburgh

suffocate them and win the penalty. Great kick by Duncan Weir. Perfect

way to put the previous up and under out of his mind. The line speed,

Ross Ford, is that Fraser McKenzie on the ball? It is. Cardiff get

isolated, which they shouldn't do when they are that close, just a

short run, the stand-off. Good recognition from McKenzie that he

can get onto the ball, latches on and wins Edinburgh the penalty.

Fantastic kick from Duncan Weir putting Edinburgh in a strong

attacking position. The maul is always the option. And it's the one

they have taken. They set it up. The man in possession can't come all the

way back. Edinburgh looking strong. Coming up to eight metres out.

Navidi looks to me to be suspiciously offside. Referee says

play on. I think it's Sutherland. They take their time to set it up.

The front row in there. Edinburgh relentlessly hammering away at this

Cardiff Blues line. They have won the penalty, a free ball. Watson,

low to the ground, half spinning through a tackle. Half wrapped up by

Jenkins. Another pick and go. Nathan Fowles is there. Sutherland thinks.

He goes to the right. Has McKenzie with him. Number eight comes in,

Manu. Leaves it to Watson who is bundled back onto his own player.

Has to be careful, goes to ground. Relentless pressure, long ball from

Nathan falls, and good line. A fantastic line at this time with a

big centre. Rasolea makes amends for the earlier error. Just came in on a

short ball. Comes right back in. Great try by Rasolea. 25 years old,

great attacking line. Interesting watching Nathan Fowles at the base

of the rack. He was happy for the forwards to keep picking and going.

-- base of the ruck. Fantastic line, start outside the Blues defender and

comes on a short inside line. Catches the defence unawares. That

close to the line coming he just powers over. Great way to redeem his

earlier error for the Cardiff try. These two centres look like they can

cause trouble for Edinburgh. Duncan Weir just to the right of the posts.

Confidently kicks between them and Edinburgh are back in the game.

Exactly what was required. They got themselves into a great attacking

position. Shingler flies up, trying to shut down the space on Rasolea.

But he runs a really good line coming out, takes on past Shingler

into the gap. Rasolea was born in Brisbane. He's still young. He has

played for Western Force. And also some Australian club rugby. But he's

over here now, signed up. There are quite a few of these attack minded

backs. It's a really attack minded backline, I think. We talked about

Glenn Bryce. Tom Brown had a good season. Last season he was always

threatening for Edinburgh on that wing. Interesting to see skulls when

he gets a bit of ball. He has come from Ulster, a sharp character. Just

need to get some ball. Which this forward pack can deliver.

Early in from Filise. A big, big man, the 33-year-old Tongan. Had a

testimonial dinner earlier in the year at Cardiff, Filise. Kicked

along. Manu was under it, taking it confidently. Through two men. Making

a couple of metres. One man to clean out, very good. Duncan Weir,

straight into Sutherland's chest. A foul and another penalty coming to

Edinburgh. And they looked as though they feel they want to accelerate

the game. A smart tactic, playing the conditions from the free kick

just outside their 22. Just kicked it long. Dan Fish buts and a pan

under back but it's too far and Manu catches it uncontested. -- plots and

up and under. Cardiff infringe again. Long kick,

and we know Duncan Weir has that distance in his little boot of his.

A slight wind left to right as you watch it.

We were being told earlier that they would redevelop the stadium if they

can. This man with good power in his boot. Duncan Weir, that could have

gone another ten metres. A great kick from Duncan Weir. Let's hear

from Andy McCall. Eventually it's been a good first 20 minutes for

Edinburgh. A very disappointing passage of play when they conceded

the try and the defence was poor but since then they have reacted well.

Duncan Weir's performance has been evident already. Quite satisfying

first 20 minutes for Edinburgh. Knock-on. Early-season untidiness,

but I think it's a good game. I would agree, especially given the

conditions. The last two restarts Edinburgh haven't dealt with.

Edinburgh were unfortunate, getting a knock-on from Cardiff, but that's

basic from McKenzie. You work on your restart taking in the week.

Took his eyes of the ball a little bit. Slightly greasy making

conditions challenging. Look like the ball didn't have the height on

it he expected. If anybody has been to this ground, we should tell

people that we heard earlier on that they are thinking of demolishing

everything behind the fast and and switching the pitch 90 degrees. They

would make it some sort of high-tech ground where you can remove half of

it and under the bridge there will be eight basketball arena with more

seating. It sounds very high-tech and fancy, fascinating if it comes

to fruition. You would lose a bit of the character and atmosphere you get

in the current stadium. But it would make it an impressive venue. It's a

brilliant little ground. This move, the late forward pass. Shingler with

a dummy. Moves on and tries to hit Lee-Lo, this battering ram of a

centre. Forward pass. The rain has not left us all day and is now

probably on its way up to Glasgow. And we have a game on. A completely

artificial pitch, and everybody is looking forward to seeing the one at

Scotstoun. Have you seen it? I haven't. Glasgow Art at home next

weekend. They will get a fresh run out next weekend. -- Glasgow are at

home. To have an artificial surface means that we have a really firm...

There were questions on whether this game could go ahead. It was

torrential rain for most of the afternoon.

Just come out of the tunnel, same ball.

I don't think as many scrums collapse on the artificial as well.

Don't know if it's a foot in thing or just the frustrations of

resetting again now. I think players tend to stay up during scrum time a

bit more. But I might be proven wrong as this scrum goes straight to

ground! I think you are right. Scrums collapse because you can't

just pretend to slip your binding or slip your feet. Studs don't slip.

Edinburgh looking to try to win the penalty with WP Nel at tight head

trying to do a number. Fish into Watson. Navidi.

Interesting surname, Iranian father. Almost intercepted. A beautiful

little spin. In the Williams. That forearm smash. A few neck rolls and

there. Shingler pop setback. Runs it to his opposite number. Williams

looks for Shingler, Shingler gives it the Fish. Fish is brought to

ground. Williams again. Williams with a heartbreak. Space around the

Edinburgh fringe defence. Navidi, brought down by McKenzie and Watson.

Slower ball around the ball. Cardiff with a fair bit of possession.

Edinburgh only putting a maximum of two people in the breakdown, so

plenty of men on their feet. It is slightly greasy. That was the

strength of Nick Williams. Fish propped it up. He was an athlete.

103 kilograms as a winger. Intercepted. Edinburgh has a chance.

Will they play on? Nasi Manu is begging for the ball, looks left

instead. Calm, assured, makes territory, misses touch, possibly

deliberately. Another tackle messed. Navidi rescues it. Tom James

enjoying himself at the right wing. Williams just picked that up in the

middle of the ruck. He is playing outrageously and they have been

called back. A bit of a bust up. Also an insured Edinburgh player.

Let us say what the referee has to say. Williams is a great ball

carrier. We saw a couple of times in that phase, that passage of play, he

is just starting to get a bit of yard in. He is bumping to defenders.

Edinburgh regrouped well. The referee came back and said, no

advantage from an earlier infringement. An opportunity now to

put points on the board. Nick Williams, we know he is so effective

and very smart. Recognition there is no one around that break down the

Edinburgh. Poetry in motion, full flight. He does well here. He shrugs

Duncan Weir off. He keeps that ball alive. So often, that is the key to

an attack. Cardiff club through and Tom James is in front of him. This

is his earlier effort. That is what we expect from him and that is why

Cardiff signed him from Ulster, getting him on the front foot. From

that platform, they have this opportunity now. Williams, he had a

couple of early errors but has brought his team might back into

this with a couple of very abrasive runs.

Shingler, under the floodlights. You can see the rain still coming down.

The hair is matted against his head, right footed, one or two steps. The

lights, the rain, they do not bother him. A good penalty from Shingler.

It brings Cardiff to within three points. Cardiff ten, Edinburgh 13.

Very balanced match, good crowd, reasonable crowd here given the

conditions. Pretty much full. You can see the more exposed one on

television. Not so busy but the corporate boxes both ends up plenty

of custom, typical Friday night rugby in Cardiff. It's Saturday.

Except it is Saturday. Duncan were just making sure he is

underneath it. Could not catch the slippy ball. A comedy of errors

there. Duncan Weir, his kick was not where he wanted be. I think he

surprised himself that he was under it. We see Tom James and Nick

Williams just doing some assaults. Bit of an opportunity for Duncan

Weir. Does not quite take it. Difficult conditions. You can see

that Edinburgh want to play smart and territory. Important to play

down in their half. Williams... Let us join Finn Russell and the studio.

Your thoughts on the first passage of play? Are a good first 20

minutes. Looking at the attacking, they are looking for the float. --

the off. They are finding a lot of success in the middle of the ruck.

It is worrying for Edinburgh so early on in these conditions. Finn

Russell, thank you very much indeed. We will have detailed highlights of

the Warriors game early on, if you don't know the result you have got

to watch that, very interesting game, that is what I am saying. Tom

James, he has played for Wales and tries to chip and chase. He does.

Good defence. Williams pretends to say that the James. It is like some

many soap operas when you watched his players. Watch this through.

They will not show us it but good trip, good chase by James. It just

bounced the wrong way. Good recognition there. You expect the

scrum-half to cover that chip and kick. Further infield. Good

recognition from James but he does not manage to stay infield. Both

teams looking to play more territory. Good line-out. And a maul

in the middle of the pitch. They tried to move this forward quickly.

The forward is somewhat isolated that Edinburgh have made a good 15

metres. Smuggling the ball back, you cannot just come back with a ball,

you have got to smuggle it. Edinburgh have already got penalty

for the scrum. They it. That is a great piece of power. Taken quickly

by another sevens expert, Tomos Williams, real flyer, off-load. This

is another flyer. Cardiff very much in control despite the fact they are

points down. McKenzie bravely tries to bring him down. Williams looks

left. There is a penalty coming. The referee's hand is up. Not letting

Williams get the ball. There will be a chat with the captain.

Gilchrist not rolling away there. A couple of times that that has

happened to Edinburgh. They need to be smarter about it. That is exactly

what this game needed from the scrum-half Williams there. Just a

spark tempo back into it. The momentum had gone from both sides.

That has reasserted it to Cardiff. A kickable penalty. They decided to go

for the corner. A real shame for Edinburgh. The passing man is going

for. He was out in an earlier tackle, and on comes Magnus

Bradbury, number 20. His mother has just been voted vice President of

the SRU. Cardiff for their turn to attack through the maul. And it has

been brought down. A penalty try. The Cardiff players congratulate

themselves but the referee has said that as a penalty try, deliberately

collapsing a maul were a try would have been scored, and there will be

a yellow card. Cardiff did it well. They were on the front foot, they

had the momentum, but they peeled around, and it did look like they

would go over, so Jamie Ritchie took the law into his own hands. John

Lacey is having none of it, though. A double penalty. The next ten

minutes in the bin. Just watch the replay. They have peeled away, most

of the Edinburgh forwards are out, Jamie Ritchie coming in from the

side, tackling one of the Cardiff players which kills their momentum.

That is him on the ground, number six. It was cynical and John Lacey

having none of it. Cardiff, decision vindicated. They

decided to go to the corner, they backed their forwards, Edinburgh got

one up on them early on in the game, but a penalty try the Cardiff now. A

good maul. Still a powerful means of attacking. If you collapse it, you

are in trouble. You can bet your bottom dollar that Edinburgh were

thinking, if we go into this half points up, despite what that man is

doing, that would be a good 40 minutes. It is now an important 5.5

minutes until half-time. They have taken their tempo out. They are

taking that restart. They try to did up when Ross Ford was clearing the

ball to the line-out. Bryce has Shingler ahead of him.

Just skips ahead of the big loosehead prop. The front row has

been pretty quiet. Most of the tempered this last ten minutes has

been Cardiff. Fish chases across. He pretends to kick. He cleverly goes

between tee players. Frantic pass rescue, lots of work on it. They

will be keen to go in. Williams is deciding to put in a kick, he is

finding a lot of space. Cardiff reclaimed possession, they get the

bounce of the ball as well. They have got their defence set. They

just need to be disciplined and squeaky clean and make their

tackles. A carry from Navidi. It is too long, it clatters into the

little ball carrier, the automatic aeroplane. Edinburgh a man down,

Gilchrist will want to bring his men together and sort some of this out

because this is a game they looked as though they could possibly win.

They still can. If Shingler had taken a metre or two off back kick,

it was in the right option. James was in a lot of space dumpers left

wing. Edinburgh kicked too strong, it was straight out, the Edinburgh

forwards getting their breath back, slowing things down, taking any

momentum Cardiff may have had out of this, playing smart with a man down.

Cleverly done by Cardiff, did not even oppose it. Edinburgh have a

penalty. Interesting with the new laws and how you have to transfer

the ball back row back. He did not have the ball yet because Edinburgh

had not transferred it back. And in the next person creates that maul,

but he clearly collapses it. Speaking to the referee that. Not

the first man to tackle the maul. The first person was the man at the

back. He's saying to the referee, as soon as they had the advantage, we

will take the penalty. It is an opportunity for three points. It

takes time away from the man in the sin-bin. How do you think Duncan

Weir is settling it? He is playing well. He is just settling in. A real

strength of his. Kiss of death, no doubt. Duncan Weir again. Just

pushes it to the right of the posts. It is not bad option. Cardiff have

the restart possession. Edinburgh should get the ball back. They can

launch another attack, try and play the rest of this half in Cardiff's

half an eke out another penalty will use one of their dangerous men to

make a break. Shingler controls are left footed. The crowd do not like

it. Did not seem to be too much wrong from here. Thinks he is first

man in and gives away the penalty. It was Jenkins. Exactly what

Edinburgh wanted, get back into Cardiff's half, and Cardiff give

away a penalty. Jenkins thought he had right of the ball but Navidi had

already gone over and created that ruck. He created the sidelines so

Jenkins had to come back and enter through the gate. Because Navidi

goes over, he has created the ruck, so Jenkins no longer has writes. He

has the come back around and approach it from the Cardiff side.

Duncan Weir desperate to claw three points back. Take Edinburgh to

within a point. He has missed two fairly long-range kicks now and have

one success but they will be disappointed with themselves because

he can get his kicks, the Cardiff fans like it, but Edinburgh having

to weather a bit of a storm in more ways than one. And with a man in the

sin-bin, it has taken a couple of minutes out of that and has kept

Cardiff deepened their half. He wanted to put the ball over and get

the points on the board but even missing them was not all that bad an

option. Scrolls it was. Halfway line. Time is up in the first half.

Depends who was happy in who wants to get more points. McKenzie knocks

it on, it will be a scrum, but it will also be half-time. That has

been a pretty exciting first half. Conditions we thought would be bad

but we have had good tries. That penalty try, Duncan Weir with the

kicks, and it has been a game of real test between these two teams

here at Cardiff. There we are. A cracking 40, and it is Cardiff 17,

Edinburgh, 13. It really was a cracking 40 minutes. Very much like

Edinburgh season last year. They do daft and lovely things. There is a

lot of good stuff will stop a lot of frustrating stuff as well. The

conditions are bad. Overall, they will not be too disappointed. 17-16

down with a man in the sin-bin, they would have probably taken that.

Clearly still in the game but they need to cut out mistakes. That is

emblematic of Edinburgh last season as well. It absolutely cost them a

half times in terms of going in and down. It is one of those kicks, a

point down. They managed the game with our man in the bin as well. As

a whole in the game, it has been scrappy, partly due to the weather.

But hopefully, second half, they might tidy up a bit. Steven

Shingler, we know all about, he potentially qualify for Scotland. He

showed quality. He is a class act. The first game this season, you want

to get your defence rock solid and make sure you are difficult to play

against an breakdown. They seem too easy. The writing was on the wall.

This did not go to try but the writing was on the wall here. A

couple of minutes good play by the Cardiff Blues and you can see how

close they are to the line. Defensively, good line speed, making

tackles, competing in the breakdown, slowing it down, reorganising, and

at this point, you think it is fine, but Shingler reads this really well.

But unfortunately, he has just pulled him. It is the loosehead prop

that entertains Rasolea's attention and there was a defence there.

Gilchrist was coming across, he would've made the tackle. Just a bit

weak. That is decision-making in defence. That was poor

decision-making. Any stand-off as well. Rasolea missed that tackle

there but made up a bit with a fine try. He comes from out and then back

out almost. A great line. Hard to pick up from the outside. A big guy

that far out. The setup is good. The composure was good. We have seen

three or four. But there were probably five or six but good

decision there. With angle, no one will stop it. He redeemed himself

from the missed tackle to concede the try to score that. He looks like

he has got good lines. 24 years old, born in Brisbane. You would not

fancy running against you, would you? Ideally not. We talked about at

the start of the half-time chat the frustration that comes to Edinburgh.

Ritchie, yellow card, penalty try and paint all over. This is another

decision. The Blues look like they are going over and he decides he has

got to stop it. The decision there is, will you stop the try been

conceded? The problem is, by doing that, you run the risk of giving a

penalty try and yellow card. So a double whammy. It is right. He comes

in from the side and brings it down. I think try would probably be

scored. Now the wait is interpreted, it is a yellow card as well. He had

to do something and the referee has taken the extreme case. 17-13 at

half-time. Edinburgh have a big performance in the second half.

Glasgow were up against defending champions, earlier today and were

hoping for a big performance. C how they got on. Fairly impressive stuff

at times. But they are up against a very changed side. There were only

eight. He scored in the games last year against Glasgow. This was

earlier on. Bit like Edinburgh, defensively, not great, but in the

end, Glasgow really got hold in the game. It was across-the-board. It

was not just the forwards and backs, really good interplay. Purpose

there, knew exactly what he wants and when. This some top the first 40

minutes. They were making good decisions, good lines. Doing really

well. Great off-loads. The king is dead, long live the King! Great

finish it. Very simple but very effective. He knows where the line

is. The way the boys have executed that, from there, you would expect

them to screw that nine times out of ten. It was a tough day. It was

windy, funnily enough, because always is. Look how difficult this

player is to get down. He started where he was last season. You know

they are good side, play great rugby, but they were not the same

side as last year, mainly because the personnel changed. You have got

Henshaw missing. But this boy knows exactly how to deliver a great try

an great finish. He is such a good player and great finisher. A great

step. Good hands. It was tough for him, coming across. We talked about

bad decision-making from an Edinburgh point of view. A yellow

card here. This is the try. Tommy Seymour is the left-winger. There he

is out on the right wing. Peter Hearn is in at stand-off. Look at

the execution. You could say this is an easy pass but he has to do it. He

entertains the defence because they know it is Joel Hall and what a

great finisher. Remember this is when they were down to 14 men said

they conceded a try, came back, so second half. It was 13-5 at

half-time and Stuart Hall, in the heart of everything, that was a play

that they planned from during the week. Looking at that there,

multiple options we could have gone with an implemented the same result.

But they always pick the right one and he has gone over. He is such a

dangerous attacker. Seymour gets a couple in the first half. Tim

Swinson had a great game as well and did lots of hard and tough work as

well. I think he made good impact. First debut in the league here. This

is what they did well. Corey Flynn was off by this stage. He knows

exactly where the line is, he sees there is no defence, and Swinson

blows over. He had a really good game. His workrate, his defence, he

does a lot of the dog work, a lot of the dirty work. He definitely does.

He is one of these guys you can rely on. As an attacking point of view

for Glasgow, it is relentless. They kept on going the full game. It is

one face after the next. It is hard to defend against. Doing all the

good stuff, being in the right place. It is good decision-making.

He knows exactly where to be. Stewart, big year. To hit the ground

running like this today... Man of the fantastic. -- man of the match.

100th game for Glasgow. He goes over the line for a good try. Again,

knows whether defence is and where the try line is. These three or four

tries around the contact. But the decision. Good play. No defending

combined the ruck. He knows the spaces there. He has been around for

ever! First game this season, away against the reigning champions. The

last league match and then the semifinal, that has exercised a lot

of the demons from last year. We cannot take away from the

disappointment of the performances last year, but what a statement of

intent. Letters get this yellow card in. Wilson gets a yellow card. What

do you reckon to this? Some people suggested that potentially red card.

It is late, it is stupid. It is low, his arms are engaged. If the ball

was in play, a good tackle, but it was late, so a yellow card right in

front of the referee. They debated whether it was dangerous but you

cannot give a card based on an injury that might have occurred or

every tackle would be looked at like that. The right decision yet Wilson

has that propensity sometimes to do silly things and he needs to watch

that because it did not cost Glasgow in this game because they were so

dominant, but in other games might. It is a frustration, no doubt about

it. A 41-5 win for the opening game against the champions.

Very pleasing to watch. It's a great platform to build on but a lot to

work on. Talk about a lot to work on, the second 40 coming up, Cardiff

against Edinburgh with Cardiff leading 17-13. What do Alan

Solomons' men have to do to get a grip on this game, which was looking

really good in the first half. The defence needs to be better. Duncan

Weir has a big role to play. Edinburgh have to improve this year

and they should be aiming at the top six which gives them a chance of the

top four. To do that, they must win against teams like Cardiff Blues

away from home. Even though it's the first game of the season, this

second 40 minutes is really important. Colin Gregor and John

Beattie will describe the action. COMMENTATOR: We might have oversold

it as a relieved first half, certainly a close first half with

lots of mistakes. Straightaway, we have a penalty. Edinburgh inside

their own 22. Colin Gregor, what do you think Edinburgh need to do to

win this? They are making mistakes and giving away penalties and the

penalty try. First of all they need to make sure they play in the right

areas. It's still a bit greasy with the rain falling. They want to play

in Cardiff's half and force them into mistakes. I would like to see

them get some tempo in attack. I thought Nathan Fowles at scrum-half

was selected because he adds pace and gets to the breakdown quickly

and gets the ball away. Maybe Hidalgo-Clyne looks for breaks

around the fringes more. But he hasn't had the opportunity. They

haven't gone through the phases, as was touched on in half-time. They

haven't gone through that multiphase game where they can ask real

questions of Cardiff. They haven't got any real tempo to their attack

yet. That's what I would like to see. Given the conditions and the

first game of the season, and they are playing away from home, I would

still expect them to kick a fair amount. Wouldn't want them to do

anything from two deep in their own half but when they going to

Cardiff's half I would like to see a bit more tempo in their attack.

That's Colin Gregor. The referee has sauntered over and said he will plug

that. Hard to tell if it's a new break or an old one. Macauley Cook,

24 years old, took a hit on the nose. Scully did well to catch that.

He was under real pressure. From Tom Brown. Navidi gets a pass away. An

injury of the ball. Myhill goes down clutching his ankle. Cardiff in the

ascendancy. To be frank, it's been an error

strewn game. This is a brave catch. Both eyes on the ball. Great take

from Scully. Yet, a typical first game of the season feel to it. A

fair amount of errors. Edinburgh have a lot of new faces. I think Tom

Brown is the only member of the backline that played the last game

of last season. It will take a bit of time. Great work from Scully and

great competition from Tom Brown there. The next phase, Duncan Weir

puts a bit of line speed on Navidi and they forced the error. Good to

see Tom Brown with his eyes on the ball competing for that. Stoppage

for a Cardiff injury. It was Kirby Myhill, the hooker, just seemed to

catch his ankle. These things can be two weeks or two or three months if

you are unlucky. He has hurt his knee in some shape or form. They

will be trying to get hold of Kristian Dacey, the replacement

prop. We might see Gethin Jenkins, his 17th season of rugby here. They

have this new joint contractor now, in Wales, where the union pays some.

You were telling me that some of the Warriors players asked to play. Tom

Seymour and Stuart Hogg, they were dead keen to play. They were meant

to get another week or so, but they had done all of and were chomping

the bit. I'm sure there were memories of the tail end of last

season, going to Galway, wanting to get the season off to a positive

start with Glasgow. The two of them were major factors in a really

strong Glasgow performance and an outstanding victory. I wonder what

Warren Gatland will make of this. Not many of the Edinburgh players

are putting their hands up for Lions selection.

Myhill will test this looking leg of him. -- hooking leg. Making sure

they still have eight men in the scrum with Rasolea in the sin-bin.

I think we spotted that would happen, the hooker can't play on. He

tried to scrummage, but the camera cuts away again to Howley and

Gatland. What will they be thinking? Sad news on the first day of the

season, a knee injury. He's off the pitch. On comes Kristian Dacey.

Dacey has three caps for Wales. A big, solid customer. Bigger than

Myhill but maybe not as mobile. 107 kilograms.

To be frank, rugby has to do something about these positive scrum

takes. Even great all conditions here have got a couple of minutes

going by taking scrums. The energy from the crowd has sapped. Difficult

for the players to spark it. Glenn Bryce at first receiver on the far

side of the scrum. Hopefully he gets his hand on the ball here. Penalty

to Cardiff. That ball must have gone straight through the scrum. Hands in

the scrum, Hamish Watson at the far end, I think. Sutherland looks

bemused. The front row union not happy. The ball just coming out the

far side, so he picks it up, says let's do it again. It has come out

of the tunnel. John Lacey says, you've got your hands in the scrum,

you've given away a penalty. If he just left it or disengaged from the

scrum and got up and picked it up... Jamie Ritchie is back on. Edinburgh

have dealt well with the sin-bin. The penalty try was the fact that

got him in the sin-bin but they have not conceded any more in that ten

minutes. Shingler has been the architect of much of the pain that

Edinburgh have been suffering. 17-13 in the lead.

Shingler, all-weather pitch, no slipping on his left foot. Right

footed and certainly has the link. Beautiful exercise in simple kicking

technique. Effortlessly stroked it. Edinburgh need to get their acts

together. Just a soft penalty there. The scrum of Hamish Watson, trying

to play the honest guy, the scrum coming out of the -- the ball coming

out of the scrum, took hold of it to play it again. The referee says it's

a ruling fraction. I thought Scarlets had done well earlier but

Shingler has played well tonight, kept his points and scored his try

as well. It's looking like a decent addition to the Cardiff squad. Tom

James, good strip by Watson, making immediate amends. Ploughing up the

pitch and straight into opposite number Ellis Jenkins. More abrasion,

Nathan Fowles. Rasolea, Nathan Fowles looking right. Jamie Ritchie,

the man who has been sin-binned, making some territory.

They don't have the Warriors' pattern, it's a bit more left-

right. They are getting more tempo into their attack. Rescued by

Bradbury who has a pile of blue jerseys on him. Takes a lot of red

jerseys to keep it. It has been turned over says the referee.

Edinburgh get it back again. Bradbury with a pick and go. Smashed

by Williams. Better spell of play. WP Nel also driven back. I think

everybody hopes Gilchrist gets through some injury free game time.

He's had a tough run of things. Great to see him as joint Captain at

Edinburgh. His leadership is well respected within the squad. The

first view of Tofilau, the man who was playing at Kirkcaldy, division

two rugby last year. Watson. Duncan Weir at nine. Back to Gilchrist.

Edinburgh going left-to-right and then right to left. Good flowed,

that's more like it. Up the right wing and taken out of touch by Dan

Fish, who tries to pretend it wasn't out of touch. Two players

acknowledge each other. Better play from Edinburgh but not really making

territory. At least they kept possession. Now they need to create

a spark somewhere. It's a great hit from Nick Williams. As Sutherland

tries to pick and go. Gets moved backwards by Williams. Obviously has

a bit of a stiff neck as a result. We came in earlier today and watched

the warm up with Williams doing his tackle practising on his knees. They

were running at full blast and getting knocked back by him. He's a

huge man. Edinburgh keeping possession. A little flowed at the

end. So often it spark something, you can get behind the opposition

defence. They need a bit of front foot ball now. Gets in tempo into

the attack. Shingler nearly had that. Rasolea, coming back for the

original mark on. Looked to be the correct move but it was just the

execution. They set as if they were going to maul, got the ball down and

moved it to the back of them all. Straightaway they could play away.

The pass from Watson was just over the head of Tofilau. And the

momentum is lost. But it was a knock-on from Cardiff so Edinburgh

still have possession in the Cardiff half. They need to launch some sort

of attack in this passage of play, get some sort of points. That last

phase, they had multiphase, Cardiff discipline was good. Cardiff will

not give away the soft penalties, something they are the Edinburgh

team will have to create for themselves. To get behind the

Cardiff defence and picked them off. Edinburgh looking for that much

wanted scrum dominance. Nathan falls to Duncan Weir. Tofilau stays up.

Bradbury. We can hear bread of Heaven ringing

around the stadium. Duncan Weir comes inside. Jamie Ritchie.

Duncan Weir hangs on. Just threw the dummy. The referee saw Cory Allen

was miles offside stopping Duncan Weir passing out wide. Great passage

of play from Edinburgh. Much better. Interception from Dan Fish, bringing

it back to the original penalty as you spotted. Just got in Duncan

Weir's eyeline. Any opportunity to pass out wide wasn't on because he

was miles offside. Soft penalty for Cardiff. The previous phase they

contained Edinburgh quite comfortably. They have given Duncan

Weir the chance to get some points in the second half for Edinburgh.

The game has picked up a bit in the last few minutes. Edinburgh, as

everyone in the studio said, can win this match. They have the players to

win it. This is the offence, flying out of defence. The guys in the

studio were talking about Edinburgh's error count from the

first half. They have cut that out in the last five minutes, they've

had a lot of possession in the Cardiff half. It's now, how do they

break the Cardiff defence down? Cardiff were not a strong defensive

unit last season. They have worked on it, and it's up to Edinburgh to

break them down. Duncan Weir peers into the rain. Quick pull back, and

a lovely kick giving Edinburgh another three points. Edinburgh with

a lot to do to win this, but it's definitely winnable. Duncan Weir was

back at halfway by the time the ball went over the posts. He was

comfortable as soon sit came off the boot. Cardiff are making a change. I

think Gareth Anscombe coming on. One of two fly-halves on the bench,

Matthew Morgan as well. You spot the backs and I spot the forwards.

Gethin Jenkins, longevity, British and Irish Lions, Welsh

internationalist. Edinburgh on the ball inside their own 22. Nathan

Fowles looks up with a couple of red jerseys to his right. Gilchrist, one

of the best players around. Duncan Weir inside his 22.

Turned over by Edinburgh. McInally was screaming for it. He's on the

pitch as well. Nathan Fowles looks up with a pass behind, short ball to

McInally. Comes short and tackled slightly behind the gain line.

Rasolea tried to make territory. Bradbury is their too. Sutherland,

one pass with Jenkins, his first involvement in the match. Duncan

Weir spins it wide. McInally out the back. Glenn Bryce is up from

full-back. Good play by Edinburgh but not making territory. Down the

give away a penalty. Anscombe being really prominent since coming off

the bench. Making a break that has got Cardiff into a great attacking

position. Edinburgh really solid with their defence, not missing

tackles, not giving Cardiff any sort of momentum just now. No width to

Cardiff's play but there might not need to be. Cook just nearly went

through the middle. Another Blues player ploughing up the pitch. It's

all Cardiff. Out to Cory Allen. He's isolated on the left-hand side.

Anscombe with him, and incomes Williams. It's a penalty to

Edinburgh. That is great Edinburgh defence. Well done Rory Scholes.

Edinburgh under all sorts of pressure there. He got over ball.

Cardiff trying to put a bit of width. Making ground with the

forwards but they thought they had sucked in the Edinburgh defence.

Cory Allen, great tackle by Nathan falls. -- Nathan Fowles. It's a

great relieving penalty win for Scholes. Nathan Fowles has taken a

bit of a shoulder knock. Anscombe makes the breakthrough here. Good

last-ditch tackle from Nathan Fowles, keeping the ball alive,

Gethin Jenkins. Trying to throw a dummy that Shingler went through on

in the first half. Hopefully nothing serious for Nathan Fowles as he

comes off with a shoulder injury. Chance for Hidalgo-Clyne to start

his season and get things going. We'll be disappointed with how last

season panned out for him. Needs to bed himself in and get the Edinburgh

attack going when he gets the opportunity. Hidalgo-Clyne, left

footed, outside his 22. James has kept it in the field. Taken by

Matthew Morgan. Morgan into Bradbury who makes the tackle. Williams is

still at nine. Mistake. Play on, and it'll be

advantage to on the Cardiff Blues. -- to knock-on for the Cardiff

Blues. Anscombe is starting to buzz around a bit like Shingler was.

Williams, too. They see, and again they don't go round the corner.

Navidi on his own, supported by George Earle, the big second row.

Trying to look for the penalty again. Williams now being better

tackled. Ben Toolis it was. Those dancing feet of Lee-Lo, up against

Navidi. Through by Jenkins and Navidi does his best to keep it in

his hands. Jenkins has been involved quite a bit since coming on, a good

couple of steps through contact. Cardiff very narrow. No real width,

no real attacking players out wide. Just trying to batter everything

out. Williams coming short. It went backwards says the referee. Cardiff

are still four points ahead. They've just had this opportunity to attack

after that little error from Jamie Ritchie. Edinburgh defending very

well. It's just how much juice that is taken out of the attack. A long

passage that they have defended for. The substitution is being rolled on

now. Both the Cardiff and Edinburgh, a lot of changes being made to spark

things up. Anscombe having a big impact for Cardiff, threatening the

Edinburgh defence. Keeping the ball in the two hands. Making breaks,

asking questions, Edinburgh will have to keep an eye on them. First

of all, an important line-out. McInally has to hit his jumper here.

Hidalgo-Clyne caught it. Dangerous moments. Penalty to the Cardiff

Blues, just what Edinburgh didn't want. So often there is talk about

the exit strategies, what you do to get out of your own 22. Edinburgh,

excellent line-out but then feed the ball to Hidalgo-Clyne. Cardiff

recognise that an puts the pressure on him, winning the penalty. All of

a sudden, a lot of pressure back on Edinburgh. Hidalgo-Clyne just

isolated. All the forwards try to get there to support him. He is

penalised for holding on. Edinburgh have the opportunity to try to

defend the Cardiff all that they have struggled to cope within the

first half, leading to a penalty try for Cardiff. Cardiff, initial

defence from Edinburgh is strong. Cardiff maintain their patients.

Cardiff very much superior and this could be a try. Already been a

penalty try for collapsing a maul earlier. They see having a blast.

Williams calls his players. The other Williams with a half block. In

with Jenkins. Pick and go round the corner. Looks like the man who has

caused all the trouble, Nick Williams, has got the try. It's a

damp all day for Edinburgh in so many ways because Williams has been

a real, real threat. And there he is, the umbrellas are everywhere.

And that is a really good try as Williams crosses.

Superb play by Williams. Everything about the man this evening has been

dominant. And now it's 25-16 for the Blues. The rain is pelting down. The

wind is hurtling left-to-right. It will help this conversion.

It's low, and it's straight. And the Cardiff Blues extend their lead over

Edinburgh. It's a good phase of play for the Cardiff players. They have

come out here on a terrible night. Those conditions are being

completely dominated by this man. Edinburgh have a lot to do. If they

are to get anywhere close to parity with Cardiff Blues. The Blues going

left-to-right. The errors are creeping back into

Edinburgh's game. A couple of high balls that they haven't managed to

deal with, just means they can't build any sort of pressure on to

Cardiff. Cardiff now with the option of a line-out or scrum.

Dacey, taken cleanly. Long ball to midfield. Little half block in

front. The crowd think it was a forward

pass. Bradbury does OK just to keep level pegging.

That was Rasolea, and Edinburgh finding it hard to make forward

ground. Maybe, in these conditions, kicking is not a

bad idea. Conditions have deteriorated, just when Edinburgh

need to start chasing this game, making it even harder for them. He

turned his body. As you said, on the way down here, what happens to these

pictures when it gets wet? Double just slides. It does indeed.

Edinburgh will be disappointed and frustrated that they are not

managing to deal with high balls, which means Cardiff are winning the

kicking battle. They are getting the territory and building the pressure

as a result. And in these conditions, it is getting harder for

Edinburgh to get out of their half. As the scoreboard gets away from

them, it is becoming more of an uphill battle. Cardiff perfectly

happy to keep that in these high balls up. They will pick up the

scraps, they would take the scrum, they will make Edinburgh play from

deep. In the last 15. Crouch. Bind. Set. Another scrum collapses.

Brand-new front row players everywhere. You were binding early.

Two offences. Let's go. Wait for my call now. Crouch. That was a real

increase in tempo in place and Cardiff's attacking ability, Nick

Williams, that number eight there to the left. The dominant personality,

and a free kick early in. Here he goes again. Just gets through these

first flailing arms. Williams gave Navidi the ball, here is, a busy

little scrum-half. Front row replacements. Williams looks up. It

is a knock-on and it will be a scrum to Edinburgh. Edinburgh got their

defence organise well. Free kick at the scrum. Nick Williams gets

yardage. Good initial tackle. A little bit of a scuffle between the

two Williams. Edinburgh not putting many men into the breakdown. Allows

them to get their defensive line set. Cardiff playing that one pass

game. Edinburgh getting line speed in shutting that down. We see Sasa

probably a game Edinburgh can't win now. It is a lull in play, the

weather is closing in, the rain is teaming in from the west. The

floodlights picking out a beautiful scene but not a great scoreline for

Edinburgh. The errors that have crept in over the last ten minutes

or so, it is killing Edinburgh. It is so difficult in these conditions

to play out from deep, which they're been posted to. -- being forced to

do. Crouch. Bind. Set. They need to get points on the

board. Duncan Weir will think of touch, look for the line-up. What do

you think has gone wrong tonight? I guess one of the things Edinburgh

tried to assume they will get scrum but have not had scrum dominance.

They have not made ground. They have not. There was a passage in the

beginning of the second half when they had territory and got through a

few phases but were they got for that was three points. They made

basic errors and it has frustrated them and killed any momentum they

could have got. And yet the opportunities have not presented

themselves. They have let card play a lot of the game in the Edinburgh

half. Bradbury kept it. Double back door then smack bang in from Russell

there. -- Rasolea. Certainly making this Edinburgh attack. Indecisive.

Not penetrating. And in contrast to what we saw from the Warriors

earlier on, who were coming on the passes apace, getting across the

game, getting caught far too often, way behind gain line. On occasion,

they have tried to play with wit but have been flat. Jewellery schools

running in front of Chris Dean, taking the defender out. They have

taken the bull static. In these conditions, if anything, you need to

get more depth and it takes you longer, the basics of passing and

countering, to have any sort of attacking threat. They looked to

attack the ball with more pace. Edinburgh have been pedestrian in

those areas in Cardiff have shot them down. Edinburgh make errors

such as the crossing their, and Cardiff are now in with a shout for

a bonus point. As I said earlier, Cardiff did the double last year,

taken by Jenkins. Setting them all up, looking for the fourth try or

bonus point. Williams has it. Gives it back to Dacey. Trouble here for

Edinburgh. That is the second stop they have to use it. Williams has it

and halfway through. Navidi is there as well. They gave it up to Scott

Andrews. Williams just protects. The other Williams, Tomos Williams.

Cardiff is desperate for this score. Listen to the crowd. They have been

singing and chanting. Scott Andrews, the tight head replacement, thinks

of sipping this one long. Another pod of forwards. No rush. Eight and

a bit minutes left. McAuley round the side, bit of wit. Not bought

that dummy. He really goes again. And that a way to round off. He just

spotted lazy defenders. He has been busy all evening. A great try and

that is the bonus winning try. Constant pressure and it tells on

the Edinburgh defence. They get a little bit wide, that first offender

around the breakdown. A huge gap there. Players folding round. Not

recognising that the spaces there and frustrating for Edinburgh

because Cardiff for playing tight, they were one pass games. The

breakdown is where the threat was. Edinburgh getting wide. They paid

the price. To be fair to Cardiff, it is a dominating display. Edinburgh

are disappointing, they have not broken gain line second half. Since

that little periods at the beginning of the second half where Edinburgh

had territory and got their three points, it has been all Cardiff.

Their replacements have done well, Shingler was looking good. Kept them

playing in the Rye areas. Nick Williams, who we now see coming off,

became more and more prominent as the game went on. And a couple of

basic errors for Edinburgh. That sapped any momentum out of their

game. It gave Cardiff the territory again and in these conditions, it is

so difficult to play most of the game in your own half. Cardiff

getting more and more confident as they deserve to be. Navidi then

takes out of his own 22 with a real panache. Glenn Bryce. Not enough

players to win this ball back row Mac. It is not pretty viewing if you

are an Edinburgh fan. It certainly is not. It is just basics from a

simple scrum-half box-kick. Glenn Bryce catches it but no numbers

there to secure the ball. It gets scrappy. Bit of an error there. It

shows that mistakes can go both ways. One more chance may be for

Edinburgh to get up the pitch. It is a bit colder for them because they

have hardly been in the Cardiff 22. They have had couple of passages in

the Cardiff half but have not kicked the ball for long enough, and any

kicking battles, Edinburgh have an error and Cardiff have got the

territory there has been required, and that is what has set them apart

from a fairly dominant performance. Crouch. Bind. Set.

Rice with a long pass. Edinburgh playing precariously. Watson smashed

45 metres behind the zone line but he has now turned into a slight

advantage. Gilchrist at the back. In accurate pass. Another mistake.

Difficult conditions to play rugby in but not many of Edinburgh's

patterns working too well. In the Corey Allen. He has won four caps

for Wales. Aggression. Cosgrove getting a break. And a kick to go

straight to touch. It will be a line-up to Cardiff. Fair play to

Duncan Weir, tried to mix up. A bit of space out there. It just

overcooked the kick. Edinburgh are trying to play with more attacking

intent. We saw Gilchrist trying to pass up the back a couple of times

to Duncan Weir won the backs. The defenders are getting up wide and

stopping the bypass. And they are doing at the wrong times. They are

not doing of front football when there is opportunity to go wider

when they have sucked Cardiff defence. Cardiff have won the

contest around the breakdown in that one pass channel where they have

smashed Edinburgh. Edinburgh do not have any front football. They lack

that spark an attack they can then play off and feed off. A damp squib.

The Edinburgh. Shining brightly for Cardiff though, who are just trying

to make ground, but that was a knock-on. It would be a scrum. This

is from the new rule. Previously, one guy would keep hold of the ball

in the maul and all his players would work around him, but you see

Cardiff tried to shuffle the ball to the back. As he looks to pass it

again, a little Edinburgh Poor gets in there. If you want to pass the

ball back, you do not pass outside your body, you pass inside. If you

pass outside, you do not control it. Youngsters today are not aware of

that. That is the way you got the ball to the back. They all know

that. You always play it to the inside. Fair play to the Brown stuff

here in this picture because as we have said before, if this had been a

normal pitch, we bet this would not have been playable, given the amount

of rain. There have been several centimetres of rain here this

evening, so it just drains of this page. The scrums have been fine but

that handling has been difficult. We have had a quick game without being

one of the classics. If you are a Cardiff fan, you would be mightily

pleased. The way they finished last season, they did the double of

Edinburgh, but they won their last... Ten of the last 14. They

have not lost at home since November so they have kept that momentum

going. They are making the Arms Park into a bit of a fortress. They were

probably targeting a winner, maybe looking for a bonus point, they have

delivered on that. On the flip side, Edinburgh would be looking to get

something from this game. They have got a run of the Irish teams,

they're playing Leinster at home, Munster and climaxed. Not getting

any easier for them. Rasolea rescued a bad situation. Edinburgh with the

ball. Dean, skips out to Tom Brown. It is just so flat. Their backs are

catching the ball static. McAnally knocked on. You are right. There is

no punishing running line, not much depth and speed coming onto the

ball. It is difficult when you do not get your first phase right.

Edinburgh look to go blind and then Rory Scholes recognised it was not

on, passed it back to us layer and gets momentum, but no quick ball,

and then the backs receive it static, and then it is a big hit on

McAnally. He coughs up possession. Edinburgh need to work on what they

do to get over the gain line, get quicker ball, and if they want to

use their backs, they can at least have the front foot. He will have to

use the forwards again. You have to generate tempo to your attack and

then look to free up the backs. We'll be Cardiff Blues tried to rub

salt into the wounds? They have certainly got the penalty. And that

under a minute left, -- with under a minute left, a bit of a discussion

going on. They are asking the referee, how long? He says, I don't

know. They do not know they have a bonus point not! I don't know, all I

do is keep the score. Somebody must have come on and said, you have got

the four, just waste time and get the kick through. And that will be

that. And for Cardiff, job done. For Edinburgh, work to do. 32.5 metre

long kick, write to the posts, right in the full-time whistle. Bits of a

good match. If you are Edinburgh, not too happy, but here we are,

Anscombe with the last bit of action in this dying seconds of this match.

happy. We have had a game of two and frozen in the second half, certainly

dominant by the Cardiff. Edinburgh had their moments with their

our second-half performance from Edinburgh was far from it, only

three points on. Cardiff put a bucket load on. That was tough to

watch on the second half. There was nothing there. You are hoping in a

new season, there would be improvements made from the previous

season. We said it was not a good season last year. With all this

preseason, they would have changed their style. It is the first game,

but you have the contrast that with Glasgow and how they hit the ground

running. You wanted to see something. There were not many

redeeming features of that game. Watson does what he does. He was

probably the standout player with his turnovers but that was it. A

really disappointing start to the season. A couple of tries in the

second half, Nick Williams of the first one. This kind of sums up the

way Edinburgh were playing this game. First half, after the line

breaks, we thought they would tighten up. They never adapted to

the weather all the way Cardiff were defending. Not the best performance

from them. Cardiff seen the boss that second-half as well, which is

not something that usually happens against Edinburgh. We saw the two

end of the spectrum. We have the two Williams. The weather is gone. As

soon as Cardiff got up, it would always be difficult Edinburgh to get

back, but is the way they did not really fire a shot in any way. I

came in the commentary. There was not an extra dimension to their

tackle. It was predictable. It would be easy to defend against Edinburgh.

We said earlier. Edinburgh should be better. There was nothing there.

After a whole summer of working together, you would hope there would

be something different. They have come out and talked, they want to be

top six. Cardiff away is the type of games you need to win if you have

got those aspirations. That seems to me so much like last year. That is

what is disappointingly. Glasgow handled those aspirations fine. You

will be back in the Glasgow shirt hopefully as soon as possible but

not backing the team may be. First-half tries, Seymour got the

first one for Glasgow and played pretty well. A good guy gets the

ball out of the wing and this deadly. He is brilliant, keeping the

ball alive. That's exactly what you need. In all these clips, the

viewers at home, what is the difference from what you have seen

with Edinburgh and the lack of unity and spark and vibrancy and trying

different things, different lines? There is a huge difference between

the two clubs, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Glasgow for a number of

years have been doing this. You do not just flick a switch. When you

have Stuart Hawke who has set up both of Seymour's tries, Stuart

Hawke without doubt world-class and Seymour world-class finisher,

Buffalo tries in the second half of Glasgow. Again, the contrast with

the spark. Look at the movement and people running, wanting the ball.

You did not see that. OK, conditions are different. But Glasgow, this has

been a hugely impressive first run out for Glasgow. 41-5 against the

reigning champions. They have lost their players but look at this.

Everyone is working of the ball, off-loading it, new players are

coming. Pretty impressed. There is an understanding of what everyone is

trying to do. Glasgow have gelled really well this pre-season. The

variation of attack the Glasgow have done today and the last couple of

seasons, it is hard to defend against. They are interlinking

really well. You do not get that from Edinburgh. I know the weather

plays a part but they did not adapt or attack or defend. He lost quite a

few of his players but my goodness! These are the champions! They were

the best team last year, they played the best rugby. I went to the final

at Murrayfield and a fully deserved to win it. It was great for the

competition. They have been the bridesmaids over there. Never the

bride 's. For years, for ever. All the sub sub come on. They all made

an impact. All in all, Townsend will be as happy with this performance as

Alan will be disappointed. Let us look at some of the other schools

around the Pro12. Today, Munster got away win. Amazing when the Glasgow

Warriors. And we saw Cardiff against Edinburgh and a good win. That stuck

about Townsend. He will be the Scotland coach next season. He will

leave Glasgow. I imagine it is a frustrating thing for you because

the guy that coaches you particularly well. In terms of the

bigger picture, is a good move for him and the Scotland team? I am

looking forward to him coming to Glasgow and learning from him but

Gregor showing how good he can be. He likes to play running rugby,

which is good. That should build on the theme. I'm looking forward to it

and changing up a bit. Absolutely. In terms of Scotland point of view,

Greg is still quite a young guy. Some people might raise an eyebrow

and go, is it not a bit early to get team? My understanding was that

there were discussions had that Carter would get an extension to

take it the World Cup in Cup in Japan in 2019 which meant Greg might

have looked the contract away from Scotland. Remember, this is a first

head coach job. I just think... I wonder if Dave coming into the mix

has opened up the eyes to Murrayfield. They do not want to

lose him. Bath, Harlequins, any club were looking for Greg. He is a

French speakers or the French clubs would be interested. I was expecting

it to be one step away before getting the top job. He is fiercely

ambitious, he wants to do it. I think you would do a good job. He is

a guy who came into Glasgow. People would think it is early but he has

proved everyone wrong. He has got good players. It would be

interesting to see. It will be interesting to see when Venice in

charge, knowing he will not be there next year. Here we go. Lots more

Edinburgh against Leinster. It does not get easier for them, my
