Edinburgh v Scarlets Pro 12 Rugby

It has been a tricky couple of weeks for Edinburgh on their travels. Two

defeats on Wales means that Alan Solomons's men need to pick

something up today. Coming up live, Edinburgh against Scarlets. Hello,

and a warm welcome to Murrayfield. The sun is shining, everybody has a

smile on their face. Maybe it has something to do with the wonderful

result yesterday in Rome? We will reflect fully on that later, today

it is all about Edinburgh against Scarlets, a hugely important match.

I'm delighted to say I'm joined by the former Glasgow, Scotland and,

shall we keep it quiet, former Edinburgh captain, on occasion. Good

to have you here. A big game? Era a huge game, on their travels, those

games, have not lost by big margins. There will be looking to get the

win. For much of the season, they have been at the top four. Down to

sixth now. If you look at Ulster, Scarlets and

Ulster, if they win this weekend it would really separate the gap

between Edinburgh. Edinburgh need to win. They need to battle hard to get

into that top four. The Pro12 final will be here at Murrayfield. Hugely

important for them to be in there. What will the key today, the

breakdown might be very important? For me, it is the breakdown. Two

outstanding sevens, you can see Hamish Watson on your screen.

Strength and depth, with the Six Nations on, hugely important. He has

stepped in for John Hardie. He is key to what Edinburgh do well, he

needs to slow down the ball for the Scarlets and maybe key turnovers.

Here's up against James Davies, a formidable operator? A similar

player, for turnovers in the league, he's up there, even though he's only

played seven games. Let's talk about the fact they have lost a couple of

games away from home. Getting victories at home is clearly hugely

important in any campaign, particularly given the last couple

of results? It has been a great season so far. You look at where

they were up until a couple of weeks ago, everybody was tipping them for

the top four. To be able to turn it around on the back of what has

happened over the last couple of weeks is key. A couple of young guys

that will be looking to cement their place, when there are so many guys

are wagering international matches? It's an opportunity for these guys

to step up and show how good they are. Is should be a great game

today. The sun is shining, a beautiful day. No doubt about it, a

great day for rugby. The fans are here. In the sunshine, the Scarlets

fans are smiling. Will they be smiling at the end of the game? You

will find out right here. Edinburgh fans are happy, that one is happy,

I'm absolutely delighted. We will reflect on international rugby

later, but now it is live rugby with Dougie Vipond and Hugh Dan

MacLennan. If they win the next two games,

their season could have a mighty luck for the run-in. Lose today and

that, as on Friday, it could be a hard spring. Deja vu, almost. They

met just a fortnight ago. A controversial end to that match. A

single point win for the Scarlets. A very, very late penalty. Scarlets

are now in third place, joint second, really. Very narrow margins

at the top of this table, where you need a calculator for every match.

Two changes from last week's win. Maselino Paulino comes in. James

Davies comes in. He has been keeping John Barclay out of the team. Van

der Merwe drops out at the last minute and Stefan heavens comes in.

Hadleigh Parkes is the captain, leading the team from centre. --

Stephen Evans. A massive win for the Edinburgh

team. Four straight defeats, all away from home. Being well

marshalled in the tunnel. The captain being shown the way. Neil

Cochrane. Just in case he doesn't know the way to the pitch! He has a

personal guide, as do some of the other players. They have only lost

once at home, at Murrayfield. That was to Munster. Only one star of the

show so far. That is the way to make an entrance! A familiar look to the

Edinburgh pack, with Bresler and Toolis the engine room. Kennedy and

Burleigh at nine and ten. The back three, Damian Hoyland comes in.

19-year-old Blair Kinghorn marks his third start at full-back. The

captain is Neil Cochrane, at hooker. The replacements are very much about

strength and depth. John Beattie will introduce you to number 23.

Dudley Phillips is the match referee. His 58th match in the

competition. A beautiful day in the capital city. Scarlets on the left,

playing left to right. They are in Orange today. They are in the

orange, and Edinburgh are in the more traditional red and black.

Scarlets, if anything, looking a little bit stronger than they were

at Scarlets. Every match is crucial in the run-in to the Pro12 final.

Perfect playing conditions and an immaculate surface.

Acres of space on the far side. A good, positive start from Edinburgh?

Well done to the Scottish teams for making us feel happier today. The

air smells better, the flowers look more colourful. A fantastic day. I

think this will be a cracking match. Two very well conditioned match. --

conditioned teams. The Scarlets are well conditioned, Edinburgh are very

fit. It will be a real fears bank game. -- a real fizz-bang game.

Another Scottish battalion clashes going on this afternoon, the women's

match, the International. A successful week for the Scottish

team so far, with Glasgow taking care of the Dragons, the

international team winning and then Edinburgh picking up the challenge.

Off the float, just fractionally ahead. Plenty of invention and

adventure. This is a brilliant break, look at this. Right between

the gap. Of loads. Trying to find both Burleigh and the winger. I

think the Edinburgh midfield, the way we have seen in the last couple

of weeks, they have been very quick, they do make the brakes. This is the

same as the Scottish pattern, opening up the whole defence, take

three or four people out of the line with one pass. Michael Arlen and Sam

Beard have developed into a strong and imaginative centre. They have.

This will be worrying for Ben Toolis. The last thing you want is

your cheekbone, you don't want to get a depression, a depressive

fracture. Does not look too good. You are fine, play on! It is a short

cut, but on you go. I think they will keep an eye on

that. Any further contact in that area is likely to lead to... He

won't be allowed to stay on if he keeps bleeding.

Paulinho did not make the World Cup squad, but he is six foot eight.

This is two teams... Trying to get the advantage. They started running

with their feet to try to get more solid. Managing the scrummaging was

a big challenge in the Six Nations international matches yesterday.

Some big decisions, early nudges. A blaze of colour. The first

initiative goes to the Edinburgh pack.

Edinburgh have a free kick, they could have had a back move. They

think they could have an advantage. Maybe they are persuading the

referee they have some kind of supremacy. Penalties could be

crucial. In the last meeting that Aled Thomas had crucial penalties.

A lot of the kicking team are not here, of course. I presume that the

kicks would fall to Phil Burleigh or Blair Kinghorn, perhaps. The

Edinburgh backs are ranged across the field now. Brest

This is not going to continue, get further up the body, OK? Head on

shoulders. The greater part of the four minutes and 20 seconds has been

spent in this area of the pitch. Very quickly, the referee Dudley

Phillips had made his decision. That is what you were saying, they

fancied they had the penalty and it came? I think Dell, he had the tight

head, Peter Edwards, on toast. Dell smashed him. Watch this. This is

focusing on their loosehead, who has tried to run round. Dell has smashed

him backwards. He knows he is in for a good afternoon. That has given

Blair Kinghorn the chance to have a pop. The slightly churned up pitch.

This is a man we expect a lot from. If he can do this, he will be

international one-day. I don't know if it was the best

contact, but the result is fine. Cool as you like, cool as you like,

that is the mark of the man, I suspect, John Beattie? I think

Kinghorn has got something. I saw the highlights of the under 20 game,

he has real speed. He bent it right to left, a bit like a slightly

cleverly hooked shot in golf. I think we are watching one of the

full-backs to come in future, if that is where he wants to play. He

could probably play centre as well. I wish I could hook my golf shots

like that. Liable to be one of the key players

in this game, this contest, with James Davies. It's going to be rough

and tumble by the end of it, plenty of commitment to the breakdown from

the Scarlets. A penalty coming. They have the advantage for offside.

Dudley Phillips on Edinburgh's case. He is now coming back into the

Edinburgh ten yard, ten metre area. It is kickable, one would imagine.

The Welsh missing their main keeper, Aaron Shingler. Watch the number

nine, Aled Davies. Making sure the Edinburgh winger cannot come. We are

looking for Jamie Ritchie, with the headband, he is just... Well, three

or four of them are of side, that is the truth. Well spotted, camera

guys. Desperate to get up and tackle, in the early stages you need

to be behind the line. A school is not validated until you are back on

the opposition 22. This could be negated.

Again, not the best contact in the world. But the result for Aled

Thomas is the same. Maintaining his decent record. He has hit 33 out of

41, about 80%, the cut off for top-class kicking. Get Scarlets back

on equal terms, that is always predictable, ping-pong with the

scores? Shouldn't be, should it? You should consolidate, once you have

scored. Jamie will be annoyed, Jamie Ritchie will be annoyed that he gave

that penalty away. You know what, the best thing about

the Scottish game yesterday, the very first possession Scotland had

was in their own 22 and they moved the ball. Here, perfect conditions,

two teams with flyers, and they are kicking the ball into the air. To

get the game buzzing, this lot need to move the ball. They are capable

of it and now Edinburgh have a scrum, a line-out with a really good

attacking position. First part on second part done. Now they attack.

Straight up the field. They come left, Edinburgh. Kinghorn,

long pass. Slightly risky, but almost like the pass that took two

men in Rome yesterday. Just a bit higher. A move really off the top.

Bang in the midfield and come down the blindside. The options are

limited, good invention, good idea. The right winger was in the way.

The adventures of youth. Keen to join the line. I don't think that

defence is the first option for anything, Blair Kinghorn, always

looking to go forward. Just a quick look at the game there,

the ladies, Italy leading 15-0. A tough job for the Scottish women at

this stage. We will keep you updated as the game progresses. Edinburgh,

again, most of the territory is to our left. A good break on the burst.

A chance here, for Edinburgh. Good defence.

Kennedy goes left, slightly loose with the past. Edinburgh still have

it. Hamish Watson goes in. Still tumbling forward. There is a gap

here, for Burleigh. All the way! Phil Burleigh just sensed that gap

opening. Shimmied, danced his way through. Brilliant break. First to

score to Edinburgh. 8-3. That is fantastic. Burleigh on fire. Beard

gets the ball, he stays on his feet. He crawls an extra metre, Burleigh

picks up the ball, thinks, there was a gap, he went through. If you are

already in behind the defensive line, that is a powerful place to

go. Two men on his shoulder, he had Sean Kennedy coming up, Kinghorn.

Numbers in abundance. Edinburgh's adventure pays off. In just 12 and a

half minutes, and Kinghorn does not hang about, he adds two more. Takes

it to a comfortable ten points lead. Really good rugby. Came from the

line-out originally. He thinks, I can go, there are no defensive

lines. Hands off, looks like it is one man's effort, but it is the

whole attacking platform. They are going through and the break has

already been made. Let's get Al's early impressions. A great break

from Burleigh. Saw the gap and went. We saw most of the gain in the first

ten minutes being played in the middle of the park. Neither team

being overly ambitious. Territory seems to be the key. Either team,

when they are getting into the opposition 22, are going to love to

play a wee bit more. Again, the referee's arm out, Dudley

Phillips shooting his arm out for an advantage to the Scarlets.

them orange. It is a bit of a menagerie. Well taken, they will

come back. Intercepted by Hoyland. Dudley Phillips retreats to

midfield. I didn't see this. I thought maybe it was Hamish Watson?

REFEREE: Number six. That is Jamie Ritchie, he has given away the two

penalty straight after the score. Let's find out what this is for. He

will be disconsolate. Let's keep an eye on his headband. This is the

attack. Ritchie, with the tackle. Well... Is he of his feet? He is

now. There is the penalty. Took a while to give it. I think that was

harsh. He came through the gate, went for the ball. The 7-point lead,

under pressure immediately. Another chance now for Aled Thomas.

A cleaner strike, that time. He was picking the tee up long before the

ball reached the posts. Again, Edinburgh will be annoyed they have

been hit back. You know, I think the referee got him for not coming

through the gate. I think he came through the side. He can kick the

ball if he comes through the rock. You can kick the ball. You can't

pick up the ball, because there has already been a ruck.

Ambitious! That is costly! That is going to cost Edinburgh very dear,

unless there is a great tackle. It is not enough. Damian Hoyland,

Hadleigh Parkes, the skipper, went all the way for his fifth try. The

loose pass cost Edinburgh significantly. Big Al knows his

stuff. He was saying that man is well up there on the off-loads

lists, Cornell Du Preez. A ridiculous backhand. In those

Hadleigh Parkes. This is a loose pass. He is tackled and throws the

ball away at the back. That is an opportunist try. We can be harsh,

but you've got to blame the individuals. That pass was not on.

Not that way. The game has swung dramatically in Scarlets' favour.

Well, you would have banked on that one. He has hooked that one wire. --

wide. Snatched at it badly. That is almost a get out of jail card. Who

will be thinking, how did this try come? Let's go back to Al. All of

the points are coming off the back of Edinburgh's bad penalties or the

bad off-load from Du Preez. Edinburgh look like they could

create more, they just have to be careful. 21 points and we are not

even 20 minutes in. Let's hope this time he held onto it. He did it

again. Tom Brown should be running an offence line and the runner. He

didn't protect him. Scarlets, Du Preez exposed and isolated twice.

Edinburgh have stolen it. Hamish Watson, the chance was on at the far

side. Edinburgh have numbers. Kinghorn is, in the line. But is

held up. Gets to ground eventually, Kennedy chips it over.

Not quite out. Jamie Ritchie turns it back in. A chance to run. We will

update you to a change to the Scarlets team that took place just

there. Kinghorn now has a chance. Again, the aerial route. That is

very high. Not quite. Hoyland, I think it was, who got in.

All a bit scrappy. Good game. A couple of fundamental errors I

think, in terms of what Edinburgh are doing. They are not protecting

Du Preez, they are not protecting the box kicks. The number eight,

nowadays, they drop into the pocket and wait for the up and under. This

is the case in point. Brown goes away to the left-hand side. That is

the try. Brown did not block the runner. I know it is obstruction,

but that is what you do, you run the line in front. The second one,

again, Du Preez takes that. Again, he had players coming directly onto

him. Brown makes the tackle, should be running in front of him to make

sure the attacker can it get a straight shot. Almost identical, you

can bet your boots that scholars will be fully aware of that and try

again. That gave Edinburgh a chance to step

up. Dudley Phillips pulls them back in midfield for the first knock-on.

Good pressure from Edinburgh. REFEREE: That is what I want for the

rest of the game, OK? I think the front row was going to dominate.

They are pretty capable. Dell on the loosehead, Andress on the tight

head, they don't go back very much. You think the Edinburgh front row is

playing for Scotland. Rory Pitman has replaced Morgan

Allen at number eight for the Scarlets. Allen scored a try in the

last meeting of the two clubs. Again, a good break up the middle.

Burleigh fancies his chances. A brimful of confidence today, the

penalty coming to Edinburgh. Penalty coming. It's James Davies. Al picked

these two. These two sevens are having a right ding-dong battle.

Watch him, he is still not letting go. That is my definition of locking

your feet. May be the son was in his eyes? -- maybe the sun. Another

chance for Edinburgh. As Al Kellog pointed out, they are similar in

shape, size and endeavour. Scarlets will not be happy, having conceded

this sort of territory. Kinghorn, with his third attempt.

He hammered that one away into the seats to our left. Edinburgh 13-11

Scarlets. Brown is doing well, his involvement

in the start pace. He needs to defend his number eight on the box

kicks. He juggled before he got back. The

runner, nine, right in front of the capture. That is what Edinburgh is

not doing. Giving the ball plenty of air,

Scarlets, when they get going. Got to grow and eventually. Collins, the

full-back joining the line as well. Edinburgh have Burleigh covering at

full-back at the moment. Protecting the Edinburgh midfield,

Scarlets lined up. Delivering the ball quickly, three more men out

here. You they are. The substitute Rory Pitman. Good play. Almost

having a bunch of forwards, they truck up and there is a bunch of

forwards left and right and they are playing middle, white, middle. --

wide. Number three, John Andress this time. Dudley Phillips just

penning Edinburgh in the danger areas and allowing Scarlets to keep

the score ticking over. That was daft by Andreas, -- John Andress,

you have got to come in as if you are going up words in a ruck, that

is off his feet, cannot do that in front of the posts without conceding

points. Can see the frustration on some of his colleagues behind him.

As they realise they have presented Alec Thomas with another gilt-edged

opportunity -- Aled Thomas. Cleaner strike but he is pulling them left,

that is two gone left, two chance is gone begging. One of the keys to

Scotland success yesterday was Greig Laidlaw kept adding points. You have

got to keep the scoreboard ticking over. That is why kickers practice

kicking, to get the vital points and there have been a few missed today.

Two eminently kickable chances. Thomas at pace, Kinghorn. Knocked it

forward but the advantage goes Scarlets. Dudley Phillips, the

referee, allows them to go on. Peter Edwards. Off they go again. Plenty

of men out left, Edinburgh are totally outnumbered, if Scarlets go

left but they have cut inside. They can go left again. A penalty is

coming again for Scarlets. They go left, extra men. Extra men, and an

easy score. Eventually blitzing their way through the far side and

Dudley Phillips is going to have a word as well. We had a ruck and went

down with a hand, you cannot do that. It seems to me that there are

too many penalties in this area of the field, that has got to change.

The warning is clear, listening to what Dudley Phillips was saying.

Let's concentrate on this, that is athleticism, look at the wheels.

Regan King is a genius in midfield but gives her flat pass, he had to

two people. He has been a thorn in the side of Edinburgh, King, he's a

young guy and he has got something about him, James Davis. But what the

referee is saying, too many people flopping over the ball.

This is a difficult kick, into the sunshine in front of the East stand.

He has clattered it, off the bar. Cannot go much closer! CHUCKLES

It's a really well worked try. This goes right to left, then hit this

man, Davies, who runs through a tackle. Then the kick is almost

perfect but maybe three inches too short. Still too short. 29 minutes

gone almost, Edinburgh 13-16 Scarlets. That has gone straight

out. Suddenly the Edinburgh precision and accuracy has gone into

the shadows. The mistakes the All Blacks don't make our little basic

mistakes. When there was a kick to touch missed early in the game

yesterday, it the kind of thing the All Blacks don't do and I don't

think they will often kick off and drop kick into touch. He will not be

saying sort this out, Allen Solomons, he will just be saying

calm down, do the simple things, yet the passes, get the picture you want

to be, and that hope CU. For me the key to Edinburgh is this silly

penalties. Interesting to hear Dudley Phillips having a word,

saying you are giving away too many in your own 22. If they keep doing

that Scarlets will take the points or straight Edinburgh wide. It was a

great finish from Davies. To be able to finish shows how athletic years

as well, as John pointed out. -- athletic years.

Big ten minutes to come for both teams. It's been good contest.

Edinburgh have given away some silly penalties, a couple of offside

penalties. A couple of defensive ruck penalties. Unnecessarily. Cost

them dearly because here comes Scarlets again. Burleigh holds them

up. Edinburgh have stolen it, ripped away by Burleigh. He has been

increasingly influential in all sorts of ways. Switched back into

midfield, into the traffic. Lengthening shadows here at

Murrayfield. That is careless. Careless mistake by Tom Brown again.

Taking his eye off the ball. It has not gone Edinburgh 's way, when

Scarlets have the ball, hand to hand fairly easily. Here, Tom Brown

again, I don't know what is going to his head so I wouldn't guess but he

couldn't take the pass. Maybe he looked to his left seeing what was

on? Having a good game with the ball in his hand but a more tricky game

with the ball coming to him. But finely balanced, Edinburgh would

still think this is winnable. But they need to sort out giving away

silly penalties and keep the ball in hand. It has been a half of two hats

so far. -- of two halfs. The front row is being told. Neil

Cochrane having some words with the team under the posts. Just needing a

steadying hand on the ship at the moment. Solid enough this time from

both sides. Scarlets go left. Numbers and up the middle, Paulinho.

This time Edinburgh have the penalty.

That is so sideways. Almost as if they came from the Edinburgh side.

Burleigh, didn't catch that at all, very lucky bounce. Good kick. If he

is prepared to claim that he tried that it's a good kick. Exactly. He's

had a good game, every time we have seen him play he has got better,

much more commanding. He has presence, for sure.

The captain delivers. Off they go up midfield again. They have stolen it

again, Scarlets. Men on the left. They have men again threatening to

concentrate on that left-hand side, in the sunshine. Here they come.

Watson sent reeling. This time in midfield they have a stack of men.

Tom Brown coming back. Edinburgh on the retreat. John Kennedy has taken

one on the chin. Very strong on the far left hand side again, loading

the left-hand side every time they attack it. This time of more direct.

Back to the left. Just seem to have more men on the field, Scarlets, the

way they are playing. Stretching Edinburgh, now coming the other way.

Edinburgh just can't get their hands on the ball at the moment. Up the

middle. Half-break. Held up. Again it comes back on the Scarlets side.

Out it goes again, look at the number of men they have on the

left-hand side, in again for sure. Scarlets again, with the third try

of the afternoon, it is the late edition, Steffan Evans. Can I

explain what happened? They stuck to a three pod system, they went

middle, they went to the right, then again up the middle and there was a

flash behind pass. This was really clever, this is the end of it. You

could see that coming from about two rucks before. This was the rot in

the middle of the pitch, out to the left, two blokes in behind, clever,

clever rugby. They have looked and saw that it is sunny, they can play

wide rugby. Two very good tries. Playing in the sunshine most of the

time over in front of the East stand. That was the Glasgow Warriors

game plan, they would switch between the sheep. Last time he hit the bar

from an almost identical position. Up it comes and over. This time he

has cracked it. Excellent kick from the far touchline adding the extras

and suddenly it is a ten point game, Edinburgh 13-23 Scarlets. Regan King

has fantastic hands. These are strong lads. Look at the physique of

the players, bigger legs. Really up for it tonight. Suddenly one try of

a bonus point. Three minutes short of half-time.

Good chase but again it is well delivered by Scarlets, good back-up.

As soon as you see the number on the back who fly into each other, the

number seven's. Scarlets have had more ball, when they have got the

ball they are putting more air on it. They are maybe more experienced,

I don't know, but they are certainly playing attractive wide rugby.

Edinburgh have not had that much ball, they have played fairly

classic, using Burleigh and Beard. But Scarlets are shifting the ball

around the pitch and that is what is confusing Edinburgh. Much better

performance from the Scarlets than what we saw in the game at home.

Much better conditions. If you think about it Scarlets have always played

attractive rugby. He has gone from a penalty. Second

one today. Slight disagreement with the referee about his interpretation

but it has given Edinburgh the chance to get back in. He has played

well, that is a young lad who, he has got his try, made at key

turnover in the build-up to the try. You seldom see youngsters impose

themselves on games the way he has. Phenomenal workrate, perfectly built

for the task at hand. Dudley Phillips again having a quiet word.

Into 40 minutes. He's given it a good hoof and it concludes the

Forest half successfully in terms of that kick in any case, Edinburgh get

another three points. Hit it long, hard and high. That's the kind of

response Edinburgh needed after a bright opening start which saw them

take the lead but then they were kept for three by Scarlets who got

by far the better of the possession and territory and then won the

advantage and got up to 23 points. That takes us to half-time.

STUDIO: Interesting first half, 23-16 down for Edinburgh, it has

been frustrating. They were expecting so much more here today

but it has been hard work. Over in Italy the Scottish women are

involved, they were 22-0 down but we said Thompson has just gone over for

Scotland and it has been converted saw 22-7 after 53 minutes in that

game. Al Kellock is with me, what first 40 minutes, tough for

Edinburgh. Tough but it is still only a 7-point game. Great kick at

the end. Mistakes from Edinburgh, some great play from Scarlets as

well but for me it's down to Edinburgh giving them too much

territory. Started well, Burleigh showing a lot of invention to score

the first try and it was all singing and dancing from the Edinburgh point

of view. Phil Burleigh, a number 12 playing at number ten finds himself

at number nine here, looks up and sees the gap and breaks three

tackles to score which shows his strength. Also being pretty smart

which is the best thing about it, getting himself involved, Sam Beard

does well on the ground, Phil Burleigh with number ten on his

back, has a little look. Good awareness to take the break, the

Scarlets defence will be disappointed because they're a bit

lazy on the far side getting round. The frustrating thing if you are a

coach is if you get a consolidation, get this try you don't want to

concede anything and Edinburgh did that. Too many mistakes all around.

Not dealing overly well with the kick-off, it's a good kick, John

talked about the escorting not been very great, forced the flawed and

you don't get a much easier try. Cornell du Preez is one of these

guys who when he is really good he is great, a couple of weeks ago he

was magic that you don't want to be chucking that away under pressure.

He had one slightly later as well which I believe we will see. He

needs to know if he goes forward with the ball whether he off-loads

it and a couple of times he has forced the flawed. Edinburgh were

lucky not to be punished. Quite extraordinary, he is one of those

who plays well at times but frustration from Edinburgh 's point

of view. One guy you mentioned at the start of the game, James Davies,

number 74 Scarlets, showing not only good at the breakdown but can finish

as well -- number seven, four Scarlets. He gave a silly penalty

away for not listening to the referee but here you can see how

strong he is when he gets the ball in his hands. You have to run that

line hard and have the determination to get over. Seem to be heading down

that left side and causing a lot of trouble, late replacement Steffan

Evans coming in for a Van der Merwe and he has done some damage.

Scarlets up late great rugby in the Edinburgh 22. We spoke about the

fact that Edinburgh are narrow in defence, they need to spread the

line about more because the passes in behind are killing them. Regan

King, everything Scarlets have done well Regan King has been involved

with and you saw some great hands. Disappointing from an Edinburgh

point of view but a 7-point game. We will build towards the second half

but let's remind yourself of some good news for Scottish rugby

yesterday in Rome. A vital win and a very happy one as well.

Started well for Scotland, some great stuff, this is a friend of

yours going over, John Barclay. Did exceptionally well, he's worked very

hard, work that lying very hard, knows how to track behind the ball.

If you took this back a few phases you would see a break through the

middle from Jonny Gray. I was so pleased Scotland went forward and

then went wide, but the Italian defence on the back foot and then

some great finishing. Stuart Hogg doing some wonderful stuff. Try

number two equally impressive, lovely break and beautifully timed

pass by Finn Russell. Sets up a good platform. He took the break

brilliantly, Russell. What made the try for me was Greg cutting out two

players straight to Ryan Wilson. We will see a close-up, could easily

hit the ball short to Mark Bennett, that Ryan has been vocal and it's a

great pass and a great finish by John Hardy who says anything John

Barclay can do I can do just as well. A couple of guys bouncing off

Italian players, Greig Laidlaw saying never go high against the big

Italian. For me you have to credit the Italians, well taken try, took

the ball behind in the midfield and exposed some space. Some good

off-loads and a strong finish in the corner. Scotland down to 14 men at

this point into the second half, decent defence but not enough. Good,

solid, dynamic try by Italy. The Italians had some great territory

and a few times Scotland held firm. But credit to them, another tough

one for the TMO, had a very close look. Strong Italian pack and they

will come hard at you. Certainly a try, no doubt about it. For

Disappointment Scotland, at that point the stadium was going wild but

this silenced them very quickly. Great try, great handoffs and

off-loads and a big smile on the face of all of Scotland. You could

see how much it meant the boys as Tommy Seymour takes this round the

corner. Well taken try. It would have been easy with two and a half

minutes to go to sit on the ball, but they took the opportunity to get

it wide. The off-loads out of the top drawer, possibly slightly for

the cameras but Tommy Seymour and Stuart Hogg and the look on their

face and what it meant to them. It was beautiful. Lovely thing to see.

Two years since Scotland have won in the Six Nations, there was the World

Cup but Scotland are fourth in the table which looks a lot more healthy

than it did at 2pm yesterday. We have the ability, the Scotland

supporters, we feel we are that you are at the very top by the very

bottom but the truth is we are somewhere in the middle as the table

shows. As far as what it means moving forward, we can only see that

when France come here in a couple of weeks but it should be a catalyst,

an opportunity for these guys to realise how to win in the Six

Nations and hopefully we do it a couple of times more. You know what

it is like to lead a team through difficult times so let's have a word

about Greig Laidlaw and the role he has played, because not only were we

scoring tries yesterday but he was deadly with his feet. He has led the

team well with every team he has played, he takes a lot on his own

shoulders which is great to see. I messaged him after the game and said

congratulations because I knew how much it would have meant and he

played exceptionally well which is pleasing. The press conference after

the match, I went to it, he had a smile on his face but also said he

was walking onto the pitch yesterday and looked in the eyes of all the

players and said you are going to win, because he could see they were

determined. That is quite a call, that he had the confidence. It is an

easy goal to make after you have won but absolutely. He knows the players

better than anyone, he will understand the pressure they have

been feeling, everyone talking about these Six Nations games and that

takes the pressure off. We want get carried away because there were

things yesterday which were not brilliant, falling off tackles for

one of the Italian tries for example but it's a good place to build from.

Of course. I believe the key for that group of players was learning

how to win. It's a talented group of players, and young. Guys who are

improving game on game, year-on-year. Now they got the first

win in the Six Nations, it's a simple thing to say but it will show

what they need to do to keep going and it's important for the

supporters who will come here and watch when France come and visit and

all those lucky enough to go out there. France are interesting this

year because they don't look like a French side because they don't have

any layer, they don't have any guy you'll but they have brutality. What

do Scotland have to do to get the second win on the board? I guess not

take them on nose to nose? In every game of rugby physicality is huge

and that has been one of the most pleasing things in the whole

tournament, the Scottish front five, the Scottish pack, it will be as

physical as any team they will play against. The Italians would have

been looking to dominate physically yesterday but were not able to. Do

you think they can beat France here? And outwardly, get a good platform

from the front five and keep playing rugby. -- undoubtably. Edinburgh, to

turn this around just had to cut out the mistakes and start playing as we

know they can do. Cut out the mistakes, especially the first 10-15

minutes of the game, it looked like two teams feeling each other out to

find out what it would take to win the game. Relax and play more rugby.

Edinburgh looked dangerous when they played a bit, defensively they need

to make sure they make the tackles. They have fallen off a couple and

Scarlets have taken advantage. Scarlets not taking advantage of the

tax, they could be out of sight at the moment -- the kicks. I guess

Edinburgh just up to knuckle down and get on with business. Knuckle

bone, when the opportunities come, play them. It does not matter where

they come from. It's a big game, they will need a big 40 minutes

here, enjoy this in the company of John Beattie and Hugh Dan MacLennan.

This could very well defined Edinburgh season, this match and

what happens in the next few days. Another change to the team, Simon

Berghan coming on for John Andress at loosehead. Number 18 has replaced

number 34 Edinburgh who are playing from left to right. -- replaced

number three, four Edinburgh. Scarlets playing an orange.

Knock-on, and tidy ball giving aid and my good attacking position from

the kick-off. -- and untidy ball giving Edinburgh a good attacking

position from the kick-off. A 7-point game. League and competition

players at stake. -- places at stake.

Good knowledge by Edinburgh, coming up to appeal. --

immediate impact from the big man. Blair Kinghorn has the ball, Phil

Burleigh having a word with the referee as well. Kinghorn only has

one thing in his mind. We picked up Simon Berghan in the

last game, he looks like a weightlifter. Massive power, big,

big man. Good chance for Blair Kinghorn to

eat into the 7-point deficit. Patient build-up, quick look. Off we

go. Good three points. 19-23. Simon Berghan has a nice concave to his

back, goes forward and he is popped up because the opponent cannot take

the pressure and if they can get the scrum moving, can do more of that,

Edinburgh will get more of this, more points. Good start to the

second period. Scarlets could've moved that quickly but decide that

discretion is the better option at this stage.

A beautiful day in Edinburgh. Perfect conditions for rugby, both

teams willing to give it a go. Most of the attacks on the first

half came up that channel, this time they are battling up the middle.

Hamish Watson gets in the way. That is the rot in the middle of the

pitch, then they come left. -- the ruck. They go around the corner. Try

to get some more, it is a really good pattern. It has worked so far

because they have the advantage. Kinghorn lost his footing and has to

be careful. Besides he has an option. Has delivered it straight to

the Welsh full-back Michael Collins. Turns inside to Aled Thomas. Again

they come left. Edinburgh not contesting so heavily

now, just committing maybe two men to the breakdown. This time the

Welsh give it a bit more air. Plenty of men out towards the far

touchline. Edinburgh holding them in midfield.

Untidy, Edinburgh have stolen it. They have turned it over. Here they

come, Hamish Watson straightens up. Shoulder down, head down, knees

going. The captain on his back. Edinburgh are now enjoying some time

in the sunshine. He is such a pest! He pleads his innocence with such a

case but Dudley Phillips is not interested. Don't do it, stop being

silly! Some actors on the far side, all a bit of nonsense really. --

some actors. Again the two number seven's key to that.

Penalty, maybe. Was not taking the full weight of his body. REFEREE: In

my opinion, you did not have full control when engaged. The opinion

was that he didn't have possession of the ball. An interesting decision

by Edinburgh, to go down the line. If Edinburgh can score, they can be

ahead in a game they have not been in charge of. Could regain the

initiative here. This is very difficult to defend if they do it

right. Kennedy on the charge. Five metres,

unless... Kennedy again. Backwards, really. Burleigh sneaks

over. He was held and took off again. Two Scarlets players banged

heads. Edinburgh right back into it. They ship it wide. This is where you

will see the head clash of these two players coming in. That one,

Burleigh, I think, was there. Often, you get behind. Hoylands did well to

keep that one going. The issue there was Burleigh stopped.

I think he was over the line. What we think doesn't really matter. A

good attack by Edinburgh. A bit more confidence, every time Toolis gets

the ball he accelerates. That could have been another try. Dudley

Phillips, calling for a head injury assessment. There is the past.

Hoylands managed to create something and keep the momentum going. Well,

you can't do and HIA if you suspect nothing. If you suspect a head

knock, you cannot do the HIA, he has to go off. Certainly, the referee

called it. That means they don't expect it is a really bad head

knock, let's hope he's OK. Edinburgh in the right territory,

just slightly off with the execution. Well challenged, and they

have it. The referee, saying it was knocked

forward by an Edinburgh hand. This is well read. A lot of movement in

the Scarlets line-up. They come forward and come back. But goes

Toolis. Is it knocked on next? No, he doesn't. That is a mistaken call.

Berghan has come on and played well. Disrupted by Toolis, but not knocked

on by him. Good game. Edinburgh have had their

moments. Just confirmation that it was

Steffan Evans, the Scarlets winger, who left the field for the head

injury assessment. Burleigh, long pass and Kinghorn

delivers. Almost breaking away. To the right, this time. Edinburgh have

a load of men here. Burleigh changed his mind. The

interception was on. The Welsh defence, and quickly. Kinghorn,

joining the line. We are being told that in the 25

number shirt, Tagicakibau, and that is because the 23 shirt is too

small! Burleigh almost caught sneaking

through. It gives Edinburgh a chance, acres

of space. It's going to turn in favour of Scarlets, who have

Kinghorn on the chase. He has plenty of time to turn. It was touched in

midair. Touched in midair, fortunately for Edinburgh. Not the

best clearance kick by Kinghorn. But the advantage stays with Edinburgh.

The old adage in rugby is that if you have possession, you have two

keep it. Edinburgh are losing the ball too often. When they are

attacking, they have the likes of James Davies turning the ball over.

I don't know what Alan Solomons will be saying. They have got to keep the

ball. Toolis is doing well to distract the opposition. That man is

having a game of his life. Two or three turnovers. He scored a try.

He's not the biggest, not like he is six foot four, but have a huge

impact. It is the effectiveness that counts. It is the story of

Edinburgh's season. They give away the ball too easily, on occasion.

If we had a pound for every time the referee said seven no way!

Kinghorn takes. That was pretty directly up into the air. Those

underneath us. That was not a good kick. Aimless. They have options on

both sides. There he goes again. The impact every time he has the

ball. That is ripped by Edinburgh and has gone backwards on the

Scarlets side. Dudley Phillips decides, in fact, the ball is

Edinburgh's. These are big moments in the game. Normally about the hour

mark, you get the feeling that the next team that scores is going to

take a big step forwards. I thought it was a neck roll, coming in here.

Got to be careful. Young Jamie Ritchie has played pretty well. He

will be wanting to be involved in the game a bit more. The previous

break, Davis did not just head for iPlayer, got the ball, coming from

the right-hand side, and he hit it between two players. There is

Stephen Jones, the stand-off, discussing things. I think, at the

moment, the Scarlets are more clinical. They have had more ball.

They are a bit more enterprising. The head injury assessment is relief

for the commentators. Steffan Evans has come back on. He has been

cleared to play. I wonder what Al Kellock things of

this? Both teams came out in the second-half and looking to play

rugby. The added interest is the fact that the Scarlets one try away

from the bonus points. Just a feeling now that the

introduction of Berghan has transformed the forward effort? He

is a big man, he's got the power and technique. A word of warning to the

Welsh front row from Dudley Phillips.

That is an incredible psychological benefit, if you can go forward in

the scrums. This man, coming on, producing moments like this. You

think, there is already a Scarlets player with knees on the ground. The

key to any scrum is the tight head. You can see, if it can move forward,

everything in the garden is rosy. Sam Beard, plenty of men left here

for Edinburgh. Cutting through the middle. A forward pass. Well, we

need to look at that again, I think. The East stand does not like that!

For obvious reasons. This is a great starter play. They hit a really

wide. A really wide. Kennedy gets there really quick and fires the

ball out. Is this next pass forward? It is the hands, if they go forward,

then... You know what, the optical illusion is because Burleigh, the

ten, is running flat and almost backwards. If he was running

forwards, the ball would be... Let's look at this, maybe the referee is

right? You could look up that endlessly and

not decide, I think. Certainly, the East stand have a

different view. That is no surprise! Rhodri Williams, at scrum-half for

the Scarlets now. Trying something different.

Williams delivers. Thomas sends it long. Blair Kinghorn decides not to

rush this one. He waits for the rest of his team. Edinburgh a bit slow,

looking a bit heavy legate at the moment. The early momentum of the

second half, they need the second wind? We have all been there, you

are in a game, you think you are going to win it, you are winning the

scrums, your line-outs are good, the starter plays are good, but you

cannot score and they are scoring tries. You start to question

yourself. They need to get the ball, get up the pitch, get the try,

things change. At the moment, it's not going their way. It is to do

with Scarlets defending well, but Edinburgh are still in the game.

Just beginning to gain an inch. Back to the right-hand side, this time.

Taken in by George Earle. Two big South Africans, kept relatively

quiet in terms of the open play, to earn it again.

Not enough for Dudley Phillips to give the ball to Edinburgh.

Hamish Watson did well. Scarlets are hitting the middle and then going

blind. Let's watch this. Good ball carrying. Regan King comes short.

They are trying to get a Maul. In theory, he's got to release him.

He's on the ground. He has been tackled, the referee is right. It

Hamish Watson tackles the player and the player goes to the ground, and

he did, he's got to release it. The referee says he can't move, we will

call it a that ruck is developing, but you're not getting the

advantage. Going nowhere, according to Dudley Phillips. Some Edinburgh

players warming up on the touchline, possibly the hour mark approaching.

I wonder what Stephen Jones would have made of it, out there himself.

The master tactician. Another big scrum in midfield.

Edinburgh 19-23 Scarlets. Just the one scorer in this second half. A

penalty to Blair Kinghorn. Three tries to one, to the Scarlets.

A loose pass. But it worked. Scarlets are on the charge, on the

far side again. Gareth Owen goes to ground. Rhodri Williams. Some

numerical advantage here. Reagan King decided he would just restart

the whole thing. Again, Rhodri Williams picking up the pace of the

game. A choke tackle, holding them up. It counted, because Edinburgh

have got the possession. Again, Burley at the heart of it all. I

think this is Jamie Ritchie's moment. He has had a bit of a tough

game. He's up against some good players. I think Richie is the man

that makes the tackle. Let's watch this. It comes across, left to

right, long pass. Ritchie in the headband. He is the one shouting

maul. He is telling the referee, it is a maul, he cleverly doesn't move,

and they get the scrum. Is given away a couple of penalties, but that

is a good move. I think Edinburgh need to get out of the half and get

up the other end of the pitch. Michael Allen has left the field

from the Edinburgh midfield. Christine is his replacement at

number 22. -- Chris D unit. Carrying an injury, there. Scarlets

are also making a change. Dylan Evans has come on in place of the

legendary Phil John, playing his 192nd game. Phenomenal record. Maybe

moments in the game where the outcome could well be decided, as we

head into the last 20 minutes. A crucial phase of the game. That is

the Welsh substitute, Dylan Evans. They need to start creating some

sort of go forward here. They are spending too much time in their own

midfield. Kinghorn. At pace. Edinburgh, the

left-hand side, Burleigh delivers. Cutting inwards. Edinburgh, reaching

the area of the field they want to be in. The same man, James Davis.

Brilliant. Men over. There might have been wiser holding onto that.

That is going to run and run, and certainly go over the line. That is

far enough for Blair Kinghorn. He has had some game, hasn't it?

Fantastic. You think of the impact of Ritchie for the All Blacks, a

number seven, rips the ball. Actually ripped the ball in the

middle of tackling. He can't do it once he has gone to deck, Toolis.

This fellow has had an amazing game. The biggest change in rugby has been

the defensive effort of rugby players. Rugby players ten years ago

could maybe tackle, could maybe defend, but half of them could not

do this kind of thing. That is a straight rip, it is like a dead left

in the gym. -- dead left. The captain has come off, Neil

Cochrane. Du Preez and Cochrane have gone off.

Magnus Bradbury will join the back row.

They have got these three heavy duty forwards in the middle of the pitch,

and then a whole bunch of fours out to the left if they want them. They

will hit them now. If they don't, they will be in this ruck. This is

great. A clever little chip. He is on his own. REFEREE: Yellow,

release! The call is yellow, we think it is orange, it is really

Scarlets. Edinburgh, some basketball in their own defence. Kennedy is a

bit stranded. Now they have their shape back.

Burleigh left it late but got it away. It comes to Michael Collins.

Again, they are waiting to attack their left-hand side, just below us.

There is not much of a gap. Edinburgh have three men back.

Not quite getting the length or accuracy you would want, rushing his

kick. Can see the frustration. Just needing to take a little bit more

time. Maybe a little bit more time practising his kicking. He has got

the grass, but he's got a couple of bits missing. One of them might be

the kicking. They brought a couple of youngsters, they brought on

Turner. I think this is an instinct hooker, he is big and tall, not the

classic hooker. This is the replacement, George Turner. He flies

around the pitch. Another young lad, a good throw, good speed. They will

want him to make an impact. A young fellow on the cusp of maybe bigger

things. Alarmingly, the last 15 minutes,

Edinburgh have been in their own half. One attacking spell second

half. I was going to say they have not looked like getting out of

there, that is the problem. Contesting, but losing virtually

every time. Now they have a chance to move, slipping the tackles. Neck

roll, you can't do a neck roll. The TMO has intervened, we suspect

on the neck roll. What we are going to see... I'm going to put it on the

big screen, it is a neck roll. This is dangerous. This is becoming more

and more prevalent in rugby, when a defending player goes into an

attacker in the ruck and grabbed him around the neck, it happened

quickly, but the TMO has seen it. I think the boys in the truck are

doing their best to find it. The crowd are going to see it at the

same time as deadly -- Dudley Phillips. A neck roll by the

Scarlets player. Let's watch this now, can pick it out. .Co who goes

in, the next player goes into the rock. There is the neck roll. Far

away side. You can't do that. That is the hooker. It might be on Tom

Brown? It is this arriving player, coming out. Number two, Scarlets, on

22. That is dangerous. Well, it is a penalty. I suppose it

could have been a step further and it could have been a yellow card at

some stage, but it was the first intervention by the TMO. The trouble

for the players, until this season, they will have been coached to do

that. He knew he had done it, he's not happy, but until this year he

had been coached to do the neck roll. There is no hiding place, the

TMO is there. Just to confirm, this... The

line-out, this does not happen much, if you watch it, Edinburgh throw the

line-out, they create a maul and nobody goes in. This will set up a

good attack. This is play by the Scarlets, they don't go into the

line-up. Watch, everybody stands off, and they catch it. They should

run around the back, but they tackled the player, they can't

tackle. Just to confirm, Kirby Myhill's leaving the field was

not for the neck roll, it was a substitution.

The Scarlets have done well, wrestled him to the ground. Kennedy

wants to go left. The game is for the winning. They try changes

everything. Edinburgh on the charge. Kennedy

skips in. He has plenty of men, Sam Beard. Takes it on. Switching back

up the middle. Kennedy has a short pass. What a challenge. That was

Paulinho. Long pass out to the French. Here we go! Two meters.

Edinburgh. Kennedy. He switches. He was caught.

They have another chance. Magnus Bradbury was so close. Number 20.

Edinburgh have made the crucial, what could be a crucial,

breakthrough from close range. That was coming. It was patience and it

was the first time they have really threatened in the second half. The

key is earlier than this. It is the Bradbury break. Toolis has the leg

drive to go through. Bradbury, this is the try. Toolis, low body angle,

does not get taken by the first tackle and goes over the line. The

break early by number 20, whose mum was a rugby player and Highland

games compared, he is going to get capped one-day. He is the new

generation. He is on for Du Preez, the classic number eight. But his

break was fantastic. If this game is won, it was Dean, who took the ball,

and then the two youngsters, Bradbury, turned the game around.

Here is another one, the 19-year-old full-back. On 70 minutes. He could

start to open up a gap. Edinburgh have taken the lead, they have

scored all of the points in the second half.

Hit the post! I don't know what it is about that set of posts but that

is the bar and a left-hand post. Here is the break, Bradbury comes

on, takes the ball and says I am going right through you, through you

and I will go right through you as well. He went through four Scarlets

players. Kennedy does well, does not allow himself to be turned. It comes

back and it is classic one pass rugby and they are on for the try.

Toolis, man on his back and he went through, fantastic rugby. And the

young boys made it. Classic finish but here comes Scarlets, 24-23 and

we are in the final ten minutes. This could be a seizing defining

five days for the capital city club. -- season defining. It's been a good

contest. It's been a good contest every single phase of play has been

severely testing. You're right, it's been a great game. It's not finished

either. Because Scarlets now they have a lot at stake here.

Bonus point could be absolutely crucial to them if they get that

either way. One try short. Edinburgh's league position is also

crucial. Unfortunate slip in midfield. I think Edinburgh have it.

They have it, the habit. Edinburgh beginning to pick up the pace. You

heard the referee, side entry. The original turnover I think was

Bradbury. This is what's, blasting his way through, Simon Bird coming

in to support comes from the side. -- Simon Berghan. Suddenly under

threat again. As we keep seeing, when a team scores the other team

has an uncanny knack of getting back. Avoidable penalties costing

Edinburgh. Hooked it left again, that is the

third one! Three to the left. I don't think you would have kicked it

that well John. Kickers can win and lose matches, think of Jonny

Wilkinson, Greig Laidlaw, this is a kick, pulled it to the left.

Edinburgh half to see out seven minutes. That's the third kickable

penalty which has gone the same way. Seven minutes. And counting. Win is

a win on a day like this. I am sure Allen Solomons would settle for the

1-point victory but I suspect there are more points in this game. One

way or the other. The more the play goes to the right-hand side the

happier Edinburgh will obviously be. But Scarlets still moving the ball

slickly. Switching left again, the pace, the substitute crashing in.

Dylan Evans. Here they come again. They have a man over. Number seven

again. Decides to take it on. That was the same move they scored off,

two behind passes buying two big forwards. Name watch and returns the

favour, get themselves out of trouble, just. -- he Watson --

Hamish Watson returns the favour. The pace is all from Scarlets. This

will test the Edinburgh resolve and their resources. Again they are thin

on the far side. A fantastic tackle. Smashed him in midfield, Jamie

Ritchie. Again on the far side this time it is Tom Brown again. Driving

Scarlets backwards in front of all the Edinburgh supporters on the far

side. Dudley Phillips holding the Edinburgh defensive line, the last

thing they want is another against them. The margin is so fine, it is a

1-point game. Edinburgh player down in midfield. Advantage still being

played. Now there is a Scarlets player, the advantage is over. Some

tired legs out there now. Edinburgh and a man down, Turner is off, are

we being treated so there is an extra man. Another Scarlets player

injured. That's a penalty! Edinburgh have it. Blair Kinghorn is

suffering. Tom Brown is down on the far side. It's like a casualty

clearing station out there at the moment. Bodies everywhere. I hugely

intensive passage of play. Relentless. Jamie Ritchie got an

earlier turnover, that was vital. Scarlets flying the ball right,

middle, left, middle. Ritchie targeted the ruck and got in on the

ball and eventually held on. Number 25 is back on again.

Tagicakibau. Let's go down to Al Kellock, he has chosen a man of the

match. We were looking at him, James Davies for me has been the best

player on the park. Regan King, Hamish Watson, Jamie Ritchie had a

great second half but the best player on the park has to have been

James Davies. I don't think anyone would argue with that. Good choice

by Al Kellock. James Davies of Scarlets is the man of the match.

Dudley Phillips, that is all helpful to Edinburgh in a funny kind of way

because we are down to three minutes and that eats into the clock. If

they win this game it's been a great call by the coach, bringing on some

of the young boys, Bradbury, Turner, Christine, he took the ball up the

left-hand side. Scarlets... Have the ball. The delivery by the younger

players has been excellent so far but now they have two step up to the

plate defensively. Scarlets are on a roll. Kennedy covers, managed to get

it back, now some space for Edinburgh. Going to force Scarlets

onto the back foot but they have left four men back for cover. He's

gone again. The man of the match get it moving. Edinburgh are at claiming

everything. The clock at two minutes. Two minutes to very big win

for Edinburgh or some grand larceny from Scarlets. Who have not scored a

point in the second half. The referee has been coaching well,

telling them away, move, a lot of the games flow has been down to the

referee. Only one intervention from the TMO, the game has flowed. A lot

of it down to the way Scarlets have come here to play. Without a shadow

of about. The handling. They can be direct. We are into... Him as

watching -- Hamish Watson, brilliant turnover. It's gone the other way,

in the final minute! Dudley Phillips shrugs his shoulders. Watson knows

he had it. Less than a minute left and that man almost made sure. He

has stopped the clock, Dudley Phillips. It is George Earl who is

going to leave. Just knocked on. Will Boyde has come on for Earle who

is limping and looks like he has taken a stinger to his right arm.

Takes a lot to stop that kind of unit.

This is a cracking end to the game. Looking at Earle, he did not even

know which bent she was going to. Don't know if he was out of it

exactly that he will be exhausted. The final ten seconds on the clock,

this could be the last play. Edinburgh have to get their mitts on

the ball. The maul is called. Edinburgh piling in. A battle for

the ball on the far side, if Edinburgh get it they can put it out

of play. Magnus Bradbury takes the big decision to get rid of the ball

and Dudley Phillips has agreed because that has given Edinburgh at

hugely important victory in five days which could define their

season. They have outscored, I'd played and I would wrestled Scarlets

in the second half. I'd think they were to win but Berghan coming on

got them dominance in the scrum. Then on came Bradbury and Young

Chris Dean. The break from Bradbury got them in a position to score a

try. This was a game which was balanced for a while then Scarlets

got the ascendancy. The man of the match played well but I think

Edinburgh, all credit to them. Right back into the game, very brave and

towards the end of the match Edinburgh were getting better. What

a great result. That was anybody's game, could have gone either way

without a shadow of a doubt. Berghan coming on gave them scrum dominance.

You had good line-out play, good defence, a couple of key turnovers.

Young Jamie Ritchie got the maul and then he got a turnover in midfield

then Bradbury carried the ball, very good combination of things going

right against a team that is above them in the table remember. Good

result. A team which scored three tries in the first half, looking for

a bonus and never scored a point in the second half. Edinburgh not only

shut them out but got the scores, the coach. Another smiling coach in

Scotland. No wonder, he got the victory. Fundamentally, somebody up

in the gallery was saying what can we tweak and he changed a couple of

key bits, the scrum, the back row and Cornell du Preez was getting

hammered, was not, he's one of the best players but he was not doing

what he does. A couple of the calls went well and that's a good display.

Some nice touches out on the field. The South Africans sharing the

respect for each other. Some good leadership as well from Neil

Cochrane who stepped into the captain 's role. Let's go down and

hear from the man of the match. Commiserations, great performance

from yourself but you must be disappointed to not get the win?

Definitely, got ourselves into a good position at half-time and you

could say we threw it away in the second. Real disappointed. Coming to

Murrayfield and putting in that great first-half performance but not

adding to your tally. Definitely, the first 20 we were a bit slow in

the second half, we should have put them to bid and it didn't happen.

You think they missed kicks kept the home side in it? Maybe, a couple

were unlucky, difficult, but you can put it down to just that. Full

credit to Edinburgh, they came back. At half-time going bonus point win,

how frustrating is it to not get anything from the game? Of course,

we should have picked up the win. We will review it and see where we went

wrong. We talked, Al Kellock before the game talked about how important

you would be, I know it is disappointing but you must be

pleased with your own performance? Yes, my first game back for 12 weeks

so I'm just happy to get to the 80 minutes. I do my best for the team.

Just disappointed to lose. Great performance from yourself,

commiserations once again that you are the Guinness man of the match,

well done. COMMENTATOR: Some performance,

mentioned the missed kicks but the crucial thing was the scrums and the

way Edinburgh got domination, particularly the early domination in

the second half. That man must have made the call and you can have all

the fancy dan rugby in the world but if you're going backwards in the

scrum you don't sleep very well. Because props are paid to go

forward. He brought: Berghan, tight head. Right foot planted on the

ground, his back is solid. He's telling the referee I am going

forward and he can to cope. That is a prop at the top of his game. Going

forward, low, the tight head, both of his feet are matching. The great

thing about tight head props, you could always tell them if you were

coaching, forget some oncoming around outside, plough up the pitch.

Scarlets have come to the left, he can ignore the loosehead and move

forward. You can have kickers and all the good-looking backs and the

fancy boys who were the aftershave but you need the blokes who are

digging the pitch for you. He was the foundation, you build a team

around a tight head prop. We will hear from Allen Solomons soon, but

at the end of the day not so long ago this Edinburgh side would not

have had used a performance like that or been able to close the game

out. Yes, I think the coach said this is the first time they've had a

proper hard pre-season so they are conditioned how he wants them

condition. Normally if you've always in the last ten minutes it's because

you lack power and fitness. Edinburgh, in what they have been

doing must have up to the power and fitness because they don't seem to

fall away in the last five. Happy days are here again, I suspect the

coach will confirm that. Yes, the commentator saying happy days are

here again and I am sure you are delighted. An important win.

Absolutely critical, if we want to contest a top six place we had to

win. We made it really difficult for ourselves, gifted them the first 13

points. But the substitutes made a difference and the boys hanging

well. The other thing from my perspective is it's been a great

weekend for Scottish rugby. The national team was superb, Glasgow

got an important win and the under 20s won. How important is that rugby

in general? Very, very important. We are definitely moving in the right

direction in Scotland overall and I think this weekend has been a great

weekend for the country. You must be very pleased with the way, you

mentioned the substitutes but particularly Berghan coming on and

changing the scrum. The strength in depth, in Six Nations is hugely

important, and those guys stepped up. Absolutely vital, we had 25

players, 18 of our 43 have gone. Strength in depth is vital. Alex

Toolis, everyone who came on, they all made a difference. It speaks

volumes that we can put out a competitive side. Not just

competitive in the technical areas of rugby but the heart and the

determination which was shown. I thought in Borough were outstanding

in defence in the last five minutes which must please you. What pleased

me was the resolve, the players showed enormous resolve. They were

not going to lose the game and the energy, we need to bring that for 80

minutes. But the energy in the last ten was fantastic. I spoke to you

two weeks ago and you were furious at the way you lost that game,

frustration over a late penalty, but to get that win by a point is hugely

important. Absolutely critical, we simply had to win this game, there

was no alternative. The boys at the end, they hung in, those last 5-10

minutes we upped the energy, the bench with a huge difference and I

think we deserved to win. The strength in depth must be pleasing,

inexperienced John guys but coming on and showing determination and

skill. It means a lot, guys like Magnus Bradbury, Chris Dean, they

are born and bred in this region and the club is important. We will be on

BBC Two on Friday night, quick turnaround for you against Connacht,

currently the leaders, another big performance required. It'll have to

be massive and we know that. We did a lot of work last week, it's about

keeping ourselves fresh and seeing we are well organised for Friday. We

know it's massive but we go into a ten day break after so we don't want

to leave anything on the field. You can see that on BBC Two Scotland on

Friday night but thank you for joining us again. Congratulations,

great performance, fantastic win. Bank you very much. Good man, good

man, good man. Lots of smiles, pictures of happiness. Let's look at

the manner of the match, on the losing side, but you mentioned

timber for the game and how important he would be. Davies, why

did you select him for a man of the match? For me he had the biggest

influence of the game. I said the key matchup would be between him and

Watson but the last ten minutes of Watson's game was probably his best,

a couple of turnovers which were crucial to the win. Listening to the

referee, he got it wrong that time, stayed there a bit too long and the

referee penalised them but throughout the game he was making

decisions at the breakdown which were led by what the referee was

seeing. Technically he could have been of his feet but the referee let

him away. Also very good in them all as well, and he took his try

brilliantly. They have to go and cause trouble all the time, be a

thorn in the side, be a bit of a dog. He plays the position so well

on the edge. You have to be on the line, Hamish Watson does it very

well, the one we saw previously, referee told him to police and he

was smart enough to do it. So strong in such a low position. He is a pest

that every bit down -- at every breakdown. Edinburgh getting the

win, fantastic, let's look at the second-half performance, Ben Toolis

in particular. Marcus Bradbury showing tremendous strength, when he

got the ball I thought it would get smashed into touch but he did

incredibly well. Pass over the top, we thought maybe the chance had gone

but he broke through three different tackles to set up, the strength of

Bradbury was incredible. For Toolis, at this stage it's about if

Edinburgh can muscle their way over the top, simple rugby done well and

suddenly they have somebody in behind driving over the line.

Going in there really well, just like Cornell du Preez did last week.

Get your hands stretched out, gets the try, Edinburgh back in the game.

What an important try that was. Extraordinary stuff. It means

Edinburgh win the game 24-23. Sensational indeed. I'm delighted to

welcome a fellow wing mentioned before the start of the match he was

going to be key, Hamish Watson. We mentioned the battle of the sevens,

you and James Davies, what a battle that was. It was his first game back

in a while, so he might have been off the pace, but he is an excellent

player. We targeted him in the week he was coming back, really good on

the ball, a good carrier. A bit off the pace, he picked him as Man of

the Match! Well, maybe for his usual self. He played well. How big a win

is that for Edinburgh? Away in Wales, big games, but you were not

able to capitalise on the performances. To get the win at

home, albeit by one point comet hugely important? Massive for us. If

we lost today, realistically it would have meant we were out of the

top six, fighting for the major Europe spot. It is a huge win at

home. It still means we have only lost one at home. Massively

important. An incredible second-half to keep them to know points when you

are chasing a bonus point. What had to change? What did you say a

part-time? System wise, it was all right, but it was individual errors.

It was down to boys slipping off tackles, we cut that out, and in the

last 15 minutes it was more like us. That is why they find is hard to

beat. It was not there in the first half. We just said it needed to get

better and did in second half. Bradbury's break to set up the try,

you must be pleased with the young lads coming on? Excellent, Jamie

started and I thought he did all right. Magnus came on, Simon Bergen

got a couple of penalties. The bench over the last couple of weeks, a

massive impact. You saw that against Scarlets, when we were 15 points

down, came on and made a big difference. It was a massive part of

having the strength and depth on your bench coming on and doing well.

A reasonably quick turnaround, you are up against Connacht. They are

top of the league and doing well. They don't have many players away on

international duty, that will be a huge game? Massive game, they have

won five on the bounce now. They had a bad patch a month ago. A quick

turnaround, I think we only have five nights or something. Hopefully

the boys will recover well and it is a massive game against the leaders.

There are the Toolis twins. Sean Kennedy, getting a wee munch. Maybe

Edinburgh would not have got this is Scarlets were good with the boot,

but they could have voted themselves into victory. Quite a lot of

mistakes from their man. This was the late penalty that could have got

it. You could have got that! I'm not sure about that, but it is

disappointing. I think they missed ten points in total at the post.

They played really well with the ball in hand. Edinburgh, the attack

on the second half, especially in the Scarlets's 22, it stretched the

defence like it had not been stretched in the first half. He got

to credit them for taking the opportunities. I must say, the

Scotland women were involved in the Six Nations this afternoon. Italy

against Scotland. The try was scored by Scotland which happened, but the

final score was Italy 22-7 Scotland. No wins as yet for the ladies.

Hopefully they will continue to improve. Let's have a look at some

of the other results of the Pro12. Connacht aren't going so well. --

are just going so well. I'm delighted to say we are joined

by Marcus Bradbury. We just talked about you having a huge influence on

a try for Ben Toolis. You must be pleased with coming on and make a

difference? It's hard to make a difference when you come on with 20

minutes to go, but I think I contributed to the team so I am

happy. Such a young bench today. Almost seemed like a lot of the

experienced guys were given the hook and you were given your chance to

show what you have got. You certainly did that? We got chances,

I don't come on too often, but we are always told to take the chances

as well as we can. I think the young boys stood up and got counted today.

A different dynamic when so many guys are away at the Six Nations,

you must be enjoying the training and gain time you're getting? When a

guy that year, we don't get much opportunity... Sorry, we do get an

opportunity, but more so when they are gone. Absolutely, the great

thing about the league carrying on is that you get the opportunity to

get to see guys like yourselves, making the try that won the game,

Jamie Ritchie playing very well throughout the whole game, the key,

and we talked about this already in commentary, was the SUBS coming off

the bench and the impact you guys made. You must be delighted with the

last 15 or 20 minutes? Definitely, we are always told to step up and

make an impact when we come on. The under 20s, they have done extremely

well. They won against England and were not able to capitalise in

Wales. It is going well, the guys that are doing it, you must be

pleased with the weight is going for the future of Scottish rugby? A few

of the guys last year, really good to see them stepping up. We always

knew that the group coming through, particularly that age, are really

talented. See them doing so well, it is really good. A great performance

review, a solid 20 minutes and you made all the difference, as did the

substitutes. Congratulations. Let's have a look at some of the tries

during a match. It was a good start. Phil Burleigh, getting the first try

in the 12 minute Edinburgh. A very good bit of individual play. He is

smart enough to take the gap on the blindside. At this stage, Edinburgh

were off to a great start. Started a little bit but then pushed through,

great play in the second half. This is the real frustration, Cornell Du

Preez, captures the high ball, throws it under the arm. This is

Hadleigh Parkes, running in for a try to equal things up. The second

and third tries were all about Scarlets being good. That was an

Edinburgh mistake. If Edinburgh had gone on and lost that game, they

would look back at the points they leaked in the first 20 or 25

minutes. These tries we are looking at, it is about the Scarlets playing

well and being difficult to play against. This is Steffan Evans going

in. They are looking for a bonus point, but the fact that Edinburgh

managed to not only hang into the game, they also managed to make sure

the Scarlets never added to their tally in the second half. That is a

great defensive performance. It is. They controlled the game very well

in the second half. They prevented the Scarlets playing. The Scarlets

were one try away from five points. They only left with one. Let's look

ahead to next week. It is Connacht at Murrayfield, that will be tough.

The confidence they probably have from this result must put them in

good stead as to mark It is a rugby cliche, winning is a habit, they

will be here fancying their chances but Edinburgh will be in a good

place. As I mentioned, there it is. That is on Friday the 4th of March,

7:30pm. Then we will be heading to Glasgow Warriors on the Sunday. That

Newport Gwent Dragons against Edinburgh. It has been a fantastic

day, from an Edinburgh point of view. We have really enjoyed this

game. It has been a fantastic weekend for Scottish rugby. We had a

win for Glasgow earlier on. A great international win as well. Today,

here, a fantastic win for Edinburgh. It might only be one point, but now

they have a chance to finish in the top four of the Pro12. That makes
