For so long this season Edinburgh have been the form Scottish team,

:00:31.:00:36.

sitting comfortably at the top four of the Pro12, but defeat against

:00:37.:00:43.

Cardiff means tonight's card death -- match in Wales, this time in

:00:44.:00:49.

Llanelli, is important. It is Scarlets against Edinburgh. A warm

:00:50.:00:53.

welcome to Parc y Scarlets. I'm Dougie Vipond, delighted to be here

:00:54.:00:56.

and everyone is focusing on Wales against Scotland, in the Six

:00:57.:01:00.

Nations, but the Pro12 continues and this is very, very important for

:01:01.:01:04.

Edinburgh as they came here looking to get their Pro12 campaign back up

:01:05.:01:08.

and running. As ever, Andy Nicol is with me and my goodness, that defeat

:01:09.:01:12.

two weeks ago in Cardiff means Edinburgh have to do well this

:01:13.:01:18.

evening. Very much so. They will still be smarting. They didn't play

:01:19.:01:21.

well. Their campaign has been a good campaign, they have done well, been

:01:22.:01:24.

in the top four for most of the season. They must win tonight. They

:01:25.:01:29.

have a real chance. Both sides are weakened, with it being sits Nations

:01:30.:01:33.

weekend. But I fancy Edinburgh. They will fancy their chances. This

:01:34.:01:39.

Scarlets side have for so many years had a good pack, quite a dangerous

:01:40.:01:42.

pack, and a fearsome pack as well. But Edinburgh, although they have

:01:43.:01:45.

some of the guys away at the Six Nations, still have important

:01:46.:01:49.

players here. Very much so. Without doubt this will be a battle up

:01:50.:01:55.

front. Scarlets have players like Regan King and Stephen Stringer at

:01:56.:01:58.

stand-off, who is a really good player, but I still think tonight

:01:59.:02:02.

when you are down into testing your resources at both clubs, that is

:02:03.:02:07.

when you become a battle up front -- Steven Shingler. I think we will see

:02:08.:02:12.

that tonight. Edinburgh have been sitting comfortable in the top four

:02:13.:02:15.

for most of the season. They have dropped out as a result of the match

:02:16.:02:18.

against for most of the season. They have

:02:19.:02:18.

dropped out as a result of the match against Cardiff, there they are in

:02:19.:02:24.

fifth place. Leinster, Scarlets and Connacht are the top four, nothing

:02:25.:02:28.

to worry about from an Edinburgh point of view but 13 points, two

:02:29.:02:32.

behind Leinster, it's been a poor season from Leinster's point of

:02:33.:02:37.

view. It's so tight there, isn't it? This is going to go right to the

:02:38.:02:41.

wire. You'll see chopping and changing, Connacht are the surprise.

:02:42.:02:44.

They are like Leicester city, they keep going. Everyone thinks they

:02:45.:02:47.

will start losing but they keep winning. There is a lot to be made

:02:48.:02:51.

up. Edinburgh have over performed this year, this is above

:02:52.:02:55.

expectations, which is great. They need to push on because they have a

:02:56.:02:57.

real chance, a need to push on because they have a

:02:58.:02:59.

real chance, a real chance, of getting in the play-offs. The thing

:03:00.:03:03.

about Connacht, one of the side is not affected by the World Cup or the

:03:04.:03:08.

Six Nations, get Edinburgh and particularly Glasgow very much at

:03:09.:03:11.

the wrong end really have been. What you have there is a continuation of

:03:12.:03:16.

players, selection at Connacht, there has been the luxury of picking

:03:17.:03:20.

the same team week in, week out, so Edinburgh haven't, Glasgow haven't,

:03:21.:03:23.

but all the other sides haven't as well, so it's been a really

:03:24.:03:28.

difficult season for all the Pro12. The World Cup obviously in 16 games

:03:29.:03:33.

I think it is weekends back to back, that's the real stress on resources

:03:34.:03:35.

because she will pick up injuries, so you will not have every player

:03:36.:03:40.

available with international call-outs, so you are digging into

:03:41.:03:43.

your reserves. That's why we are seeing some young players getting a

:03:44.:03:47.

chance and it's great because we are seeing the next generation. We will

:03:48.:03:51.

see many of these guys playing for Edinburgh, a hugely important match

:03:52.:03:54.

for both sides and before we came on air I spoke to both coaches,

:03:55.:04:00.

starting with Alan Solomons. Five changes for a hugely important game.

:04:01.:04:04.

What's the thinking behind it? Some of the chips -- chaps weren't

:04:05.:04:10.

available, we had a lot of locks out, Toolis is available, I'm

:04:11.:04:15.

grateful he doesn't have to play lock. How difficult it is it when

:04:16.:04:20.

you have so many guys awake for international duty to keep the

:04:21.:04:22.

campaign going question might it's tough for all the teams. All the

:04:23.:04:26.

teams suffer over this period. It's very difficult. It's been an

:04:27.:04:31.

attritional season. In the Pro12 we had 16 back-to-back games, all the

:04:32.:04:35.

clubs have to do it. We all have a lot of injuries. We have players out

:04:36.:04:40.

with the Six Nations. I think we have just got to view it in a

:04:41.:04:43.

positive light and it gives opportunities to other players. A

:04:44.:04:46.

loss against Cardiff last time out but how important is this to get the

:04:47.:04:51.

Pro12 campaign up and running? We didn't play well against Cardiff and

:04:52.:04:54.

they fully deserved the victory. We need to perform a lot better tonight

:04:55.:04:59.

to get a result. This time last year you got a victory, would it be nice

:05:00.:05:03.

to get another win tonight and take it back to Edinburgh? Of course it

:05:04.:05:08.

would but we know the Scarlets are determined for this game, as we are,

:05:09.:05:12.

so it's going to be a pretty tough, tight contest. Will we see the

:05:13.:05:19.

national side in the squad getting action? One can never tell how the

:05:20.:05:23.

bench will be used, Jamie played against Cardiff and played really

:05:24.:05:26.

well, we must remember he's only out of school and Blair is the first

:05:27.:05:32.

year out of school. We wish you all the best. Thanks very much. People

:05:33.:05:37.

are focusing on the international match, how tough is it to get

:05:38.:05:41.

together for a Pro12 match the night before a big occasion? Not too hard

:05:42.:05:45.

for us, we have memories of last year playing Edinburgh out here, it

:05:46.:05:48.

was the only game at home in the Pro12 that we lost so we look

:05:49.:05:52.

forward to this game for some time and coming off a disappointing game

:05:53.:05:57.

against Connacht, having to wait two weeks to get back on the park has

:05:58.:06:01.

been a bit of a test really. We're looking forward to it. What do you

:06:02.:06:05.

think are the strengths of this Edinburgh side? They are well

:06:06.:06:08.

coached, obviously. They are very direct in their play. They have good

:06:09.:06:11.

set piece, good line-out, good line-out drive, so they take it to

:06:12.:06:16.

you, very directly at times, and we have to be up to the task

:06:17.:06:20.

defensively. Our set piece has to improve from the last game. You

:06:21.:06:26.

mentioned the defeat this time last year. Is that still quite painful

:06:27.:06:29.

for you? We're very proud of the run we had last year in terms of home

:06:30.:06:33.

victories in the Pro12 and for that to come to an end was disappointing.

:06:34.:06:37.

It's got to happen at some stage but you don't like it when it happens.

:06:38.:06:39.

You look forward to playing that side again and hopefully getting it.

:06:40.:06:45.

Thank you. The Scarlets coach there, the fact Edinburgh won here and this

:06:46.:06:48.

is the thing that is clearly in the mind now, the only team to win here

:06:49.:06:52.

in the Pro12 last year. It still hurts for him. Very much so, it's a

:06:53.:06:57.

really proud record that they had last year. You think the quality

:06:58.:07:00.

sides who came here and lost and Edinburgh were the only side to do

:07:01.:07:04.

it and the Edinburgh players know what it takes to win here. They have

:07:05.:07:08.

that good experience and it will be a different side but many of these

:07:09.:07:11.

players will have been here last year so they will try to replicate

:07:12.:07:16.

that tonight. It was during the Six Nations last year as well, so a lot

:07:17.:07:20.

of the guys are playing at risk I'm -- game tonight. Let's talk about

:07:21.:07:25.

some of the guys who are looking for big performances, John Hardy has

:07:26.:07:28.

been a real revelation, join the Scotland side, came to Edinburgh,

:07:29.:07:31.

has been playing really well. Hamish Watson takes his place tonight. This

:07:32.:07:35.

is a perfect opportunity for somebody like Hamish Watson to step

:07:36.:07:41.

up. John Hardy Scotland's number seven and Edinburgh's number seven,

:07:42.:07:45.

but Hamish Watson is a great understudy. He is a perfect shape

:07:46.:07:48.

and size for the modern-day seven. Look at the depth of his chest

:07:49.:07:52.

there. Once he gets in over the ball you are not going to get him off it

:07:53.:07:57.

and that's why he's so good. He's also very abrasive and he's just

:07:58.:08:00.

relentless. He gets knocked back, he gets up, he goes again. A bit like

:08:01.:08:04.

John Hardy, a similar style. I'm sure Hamish is really learning from

:08:05.:08:07.

John Hardy. I've been really impressed with him in the last few

:08:08.:08:12.

years. He will get a chance and play for Scotland, I've no doubt, but he

:08:13.:08:17.

has to bide his time and learn and get better at it and use games like

:08:18.:08:21.

this to really make his mark in the game and put his mark on it and make

:08:22.:08:24.

sure he can dominate the contact. For those who are not entirely sure

:08:25.:08:27.

what a seven actually does, just explain to us the role he has to

:08:28.:08:31.

play and how important it is for the rest of the team. Contact is so

:08:32.:08:35.

important, set pieces is one part of it but there are so many more

:08:36.:08:38.

contacts and collisions that at seven he getting you -- in over the

:08:39.:08:43.

ball, getting the tackle, getting in and trying to secure the ball. The

:08:44.:08:48.

great sevens, Victor MacColl was fantastic, tomorrow, John Hardy and

:08:49.:08:53.

Sam Warburton and Tipuric and Berkeley and Coward come you see so

:08:54.:08:56.

many players now, so Hamish Watson has a big role to play tonight. Is

:08:57.:09:02.

the unlucky not to be the Scotland setup? It's too early, John Hardy is

:09:03.:09:08.

the clear choice. You have Blair Cowan, John Barclay, a Scarlets

:09:09.:09:12.

player obviously back in the Scotland squad. Hamish Watson has to

:09:13.:09:16.

bide his time but that time will come. One Bobby -- one guy who could

:09:17.:09:20.

do some damage tonight for the Scarlets, he has done so much over

:09:21.:09:26.

the years is DTH Van der Merwe. Now playing here in Wales and he is such

:09:27.:09:31.

a great entertainer, so popular here, but I'm sure Edinburgh fans

:09:32.:09:35.

would like to see him again -- would like to see him again. Oh, I had a

:09:36.:09:41.

quick talk with him before the game, once a warrior, always a warrior. He

:09:42.:09:44.

wants to score tries against Edinburgh. He is playing for the

:09:45.:09:49.

Scarlets and has had a great start his career here. He scored his drive

:09:50.:09:53.

on his first game and they love him here at Parc y Scarlets. He's that

:09:54.:09:57.

player that is not a winger that stays on his wing. He goes looking

:09:58.:10:03.

for work. He will come off nine, come off ten, coming from the

:10:04.:10:06.

openside, he is one of these great players and I'm delighted for him.

:10:07.:10:11.

Absolutely, a standout player. Back to tonight, Edinburgh has a really

:10:12.:10:17.

good front eight, they are strong, it's usually important, they win

:10:18.:10:21.

lots of penalties off it and it will be key against the Scarlets team.

:10:22.:10:25.

Set pieces, the key to this is against Leinster, is who is coming

:10:26.:10:33.

into the front row. Dickinson, Ross Ford and Nell, against Munster at

:10:34.:10:36.

Murrayfield. This is the Scotland front row playing tomorrow. The key

:10:37.:10:39.

tonight is for the likes of Sullivan and Cochran and Andress, can they

:10:40.:10:44.

replicate that quality when they are now playing the Edinburgh tonight,

:10:45.:10:48.

because it can be devastating. You are not just winning possession,

:10:49.:10:51.

you're turning oval ball, getting penalties, which takes you 40-50

:10:52.:10:56.

yards down the line. It's an offensive scrum, look at that,

:10:57.:11:00.

absolute power but yet again that is the Scotland front row, can

:11:01.:11:05.

Edinburgh tonight with Sutherland, Cochrane and Andress, step up? I

:11:06.:11:09.

think they are good scrimmages and I would expect them to get under John

:11:10.:11:14.

tonight. I have heard that Scotland had a wonderful win, and historic

:11:15.:11:17.

win against Edinburgh last week, playing against Wales this evening,

:11:18.:11:22.

they were up at half-time. They have just lost, 18-15, a late penalty, it

:11:23.:11:29.

was 15-15 for so long in the game. I mentioned to Alan Solomons he had

:11:30.:11:32.

taken a couple of players out of the under 20s side, the national squad,

:11:33.:11:35.

sitting on the bench tonight. Would they have made a difference? I'm

:11:36.:11:42.

sure they would because Jamie Ritchie and Blair Kinghorn,

:11:43.:11:44.

outstanding players, Kinghorn scored a try in the victory against

:11:45.:11:48.

England, a memorable victory. There is a clear hierarchy in Scottish

:11:49.:11:51.

rugby and it is the international team at the top, then the pro teams,

:11:52.:11:55.

then the age groups and the sevens at the same level. The priority is

:11:56.:12:03.

with the proteins. There are so many players... That is priority has to

:12:04.:12:08.

be Edinburgh. He has injuries at ten and 15 so Blair Kinghorn covers both

:12:09.:12:11.

stand-off and full-back and on the back row they have a number of

:12:12.:12:14.

injuries as well, Jamie Ritchie had to be called back. It's a shame for

:12:15.:12:18.

those two players. They would have been desperate. I spoke to Blair, he

:12:19.:12:23.

was desperate to play but it wasn't as -- his decision, it was taken out

:12:24.:12:27.

of his hands and I hope they get gametime tonight because the 3-point

:12:28.:12:31.

defeat at Wales, those two players could have made the difference so

:12:32.:12:36.

give them gametime tonight. He had a great Win a week ago and some of his

:12:37.:12:40.

players were taken, that's the way this cookie crumbles. Let's talk

:12:41.:12:44.

about the importance of them potentially coming off the bench

:12:45.:12:47.

because against Scarlets it will be an attritional game. I would have

:12:48.:12:51.

thought so, it's a strong bench. There are players who can come off,

:12:52.:12:55.

Jamie Ritchie will get gametime tonight. He is not regarded as an

:12:56.:13:00.

under 20, he is a key part now of the squad. But with Coleman and Du

:13:01.:13:05.

Preez and Hamish Watson, it's a good back row, a back row that can really

:13:06.:13:08.

get in amongst the Scarlets back row. Shingler at six and Morgan

:13:09.:13:12.

Allen at eight, an experienced player, so they are not lacking

:13:13.:13:16.

experience or quality in the back row so it will be a good battle

:13:17.:13:21.

tonight. Phil Burleigh, who signed an extension to his contract, he has

:13:22.:13:26.

been an impressive player at ten. He causes a bit of excitement, likes to

:13:27.:13:31.

do things, unsubtle defences. Next year, Duncan Weir is coming along

:13:32.:13:37.

from Glasgow. Come off his perch. I think he will move into the centre.

:13:38.:13:41.

Phil Burleigh looks like a 12 playing at ten, it's been effective

:13:42.:13:44.

and he reads the game well, he manages the game very well. That's

:13:45.:13:47.

good, you have young players around them and he has to boss it will stop

:13:48.:13:53.

I'd like to feed if Nathan Fowles will get the game going and get the

:13:54.:13:56.

tempo but Phil Burleigh will dictate where Edinburgh play and how

:13:57.:13:59.

Edinburgh play. One of the guys I like watching is Damien Hoyland, in

:14:00.:14:05.

the wing, as we mentioned DTH Van der Merwe, and entertaining one but

:14:06.:14:09.

this young fellow is a fireball once he gets going. Very stocky, big

:14:10.:14:14.

legs, real power, a real athlete, which is great to see. It's a good

:14:15.:14:18.

stadium here. The picture is not great tonight but they have had

:14:19.:14:22.

horrendous weather. Just as we have all over the place. You can see it

:14:23.:14:25.

is very patchy as the Edinburgh team are getting ready to go. You hope

:14:26.:14:31.

you get the ball, it's dry, it's good overhead conditions so I'd like

:14:32.:14:34.

to think Edinburgh can get the ball out wide and get Hoyland and Tom

:14:35.:14:40.

Brown, and Greig Tonks, it's a good exciting three, it's up to the

:14:41.:14:43.

midfield and the forwards to win the ball and get it into good areas. It

:14:44.:14:48.

should be a fantastic match, I'm looking forward to it. We are

:14:49.:14:51.

watching from the stands, you will get to watch it from your sofa, live

:14:52.:14:56.

here on BBC Two Scotland in the Cumbria -- company of our commentary

:14:57.:15:03.

team, Hugh Dan MacLennan and John Beattie.

:15:04.:15:06.

COMMENTATOR: There are nine points covering the

:15:07.:15:11.

top six. This is the Edinburgh line-up tonight. The second row, the

:15:12.:15:18.

departing captain is back on the blindside, otherwise the same pack,

:15:19.:15:22.

the backs, Hoyland is the second top scorer in the competition, Sunbird

:15:23.:15:27.

is in for Strauss and -- Sam Beard is in. An attritional contest in

:15:28.:15:36.

prospect. Edinburgh in their away strip. A must win for both sides.

:15:37.:15:51.

The coach is clear the distractions of Cardiff and all the other matches

:15:52.:15:54.

being played tonight are set aside because these are

:15:55.:15:55.

being played tonight are set aside because these are critical moments

:15:56.:15:56.

in this year's competition. The predictable fanfare, an

:15:57.:16:09.

explosion of colour, at Parc y Scarlets, for the home team.

:16:10.:16:15.

Disciplinary issues, there are the yellow cards, forwards, changes in

:16:16.:16:20.

the front row Bulbring makes his debut from South Africa, and

:16:21.:16:23.

unchanged back row for three weeks in a row. Rhodri Williams is

:16:24.:16:25.

leaving, Steve Shingler. Well, the substitute Benz, some

:16:26.:16:41.

familiar names we heard of -- bench. Ritchie, Toolis, perhaps not the

:16:42.:16:47.

strongest Scarlets bench we have ever seen. Scarlets have the ball,

:16:48.:16:51.

playing from right to left. The referee is Andrew dress of the Irish

:16:52.:16:59.

union. -- Andrew Brace. His eights match in this competition, not the

:17:00.:17:02.

most experienced of referees but he has Nathan Hodges on the line for

:17:03.:17:07.

comfort and support. All the play for in one of the tightest

:17:08.:17:13.

competitions we have seen for years. And immediately Scarlets, who else,

:17:14.:17:21.

it is Van der Merwe. Slackness, immediately, in the Edinburgh

:17:22.:17:24.

forward line there, completely misreading that. Van der Merwe was

:17:25.:17:33.

on it like a flash. 25 metres from the line, just seconds off the

:17:34.:17:38.

clock, less than 20 seconds, and he almost breached it. But Edinburgh

:17:39.:17:45.

have won it. Nathan Fowles. Well, John Beattie, that's a get out of

:17:46.:17:49.

jail card in less than 20 seconds question might I was watching the

:17:50.:17:53.

kick off and I thought they had lined up incorrectly. It's Toolis,

:17:54.:17:58.

he is too far forward. He misjudged it. It wasn't lifted properly, it

:17:59.:18:02.

didn't get as high as he thought. He was very far forward. They have cut

:18:03.:18:06.

off early but it was going to be the long pass out, that structure and

:18:07.:18:11.

Van der Merwe was nearly in. He will never have had an earlier score,

:18:12.:18:15.

slack passing midfield, Scarlets grabbing it. We will come back to

:18:16.:18:19.

the state of the pitch. There's our first opportunity at the first

:18:20.:18:23.

scrum, we can have a word, John, it's not an ideal surface in any

:18:24.:18:29.

manner of form? Not ideal. This is just a bad pass, but the pitch is

:18:30.:18:33.

harder than I thought it looked, certainly around the edges. Lots of

:18:34.:18:37.

sand. They have had a bit of water but the pitch is fairly hard, short

:18:38.:18:42.

grass, a howling wind left to right as the view was the IPSO Scarlets

:18:43.:18:45.

playing into the wind first half and I agree with Andy Nicol, these are

:18:46.:18:50.

the periods of the game you need to be settled, set piece, first scrum.

:18:51.:18:55.

Slippy surface, it has to be said. It will suit those with speed if

:18:56.:18:58.

they get going, Damien Hoyland for example, Van der Merwe has had a

:18:59.:19:07.

blast already. The attritional contest in the packs already there

:19:08.:19:14.

to be seen. We heard a lot in the pre-match chat about the need for

:19:15.:19:19.

the Edinburgh from three to step up to the plate, Sutherland, Cochrane,

:19:20.:19:25.

Andress. They have chosen to go back to the scrum. If we watch their

:19:26.:19:32.

feet, we will see whether they are having trouble. Maintaining the

:19:33.:19:35.

ground. Yes, the previous scrum, I think Phil John, the prop we see

:19:36.:19:40.

coming in, the number of one for the Scarlets, adjudged to have shoved

:19:41.:19:45.

early. Andress, number three four Edinburgh, normally scrum is very

:19:46.:19:47.

low, almost with his knees on the ground. It is not the first choice

:19:48.:19:53.

front row. This is key that they get at least parity. Here we go. Good

:19:54.:20:00.

scrum. Solid from Edinburgh. Scarlets go to the left. The referee

:20:01.:20:08.

had a quick look. See the kick in the ground there, absolutely

:20:09.:20:10.

rock-solid out there. That almost went over the defender's shoulder, a

:20:11.:20:18.

chance for Edinburgh now to come back. The first aerial bombardment.

:20:19.:20:23.

That one didn't really carry and again, uncertainty under the high

:20:24.:20:26.

ball, but Edinburgh have plenty of men behind the ball. Fowles, Tonks

:20:27.:20:36.

joins the line for full-back. And a penalty, the first penalty to

:20:37.:20:43.

Edinburgh. I tell you what though, they will be delighted with the

:20:44.:20:46.

first scrum, the reset scrum, because that is a second string

:20:47.:20:50.

front row on that front row, that Edinburgh front row, had the

:20:51.:20:54.

Scarlets front row on toast and the referee was about to blow for a

:20:55.:20:58.

penalty when Edinburgh got the ball, so the wind is not where we thought

:20:59.:21:01.

so I think Edinburgh will be delighted. This is just a crazy high

:21:02.:21:08.

tackle. Well, perhaps at any other point in the game with only four

:21:09.:21:11.

minutes in, but we have seen less than that be very harshly dealt

:21:12.:21:17.

with. To be neutral, Brown was running low. Yes. Perhaps a few of

:21:18.:21:22.

the other players slipped off the tackle just in time. Not so sure

:21:23.:21:27.

that was the planned outcome, but it reached an Edinburgh mascot,

:21:28.:21:36.

Coleman, the captain. Fowles, untidy from Edinburgh again. The referee is

:21:37.:21:44.

waiting for the knock-on, just having a look to see if Edinburgh

:21:45.:21:48.

will do anything with it. They have a chance. Fowles again. Slowish

:21:49.:21:57.

ball. Burley keeps a low this time, using this click along the ground to

:21:58.:22:00.

try and tempt the mistakes -- Burleigh. Now Tonks has it, he will

:22:01.:22:07.

fire it up again. He chooses to run, changes his mind, goes left. Well

:22:08.:22:16.

taken in the wind. It's almost charged down, which has given a

:22:17.:22:20.

Scarlets a chance here to come into play because it rebounded off an

:22:21.:22:23.

Edinburgh player and they have it, they have momentum now and they have

:22:24.:22:30.

plenty of men coming left. A lot of men, Van der Merwe on the prowl,

:22:31.:22:34.

they are trying to bring him in. He's there, but he's not needed

:22:35.:22:37.

because the number eight has gone all the way, Allen. He has sliced

:22:38.:22:44.

through the Edinburgh defence. Edinburgh looking for Van der Merwe

:22:45.:22:48.

to take the ball, wasn't needed, Morgan Allen completed the move

:22:49.:22:51.

beautifully. This is really good play. Because it's that long pass

:22:52.:22:57.

from Shingler, remember Scotland tried to get Shingler. He passed it

:22:58.:23:01.

between bodies and then the number eight just a big ramrod of a hand

:23:02.:23:08.

off and Allen is over for the try. Look at that pass, split between two

:23:09.:23:12.

forwards or so the defenders are attracted in. There is a man free

:23:13.:23:15.

running. Out comes the right hand, bang, you're not getting anywhere

:23:16.:23:20.

near me. That's a good try. Pace, balance and poise from the number

:23:21.:23:24.

eight. He used the players as decoys, Edinburgh eventually had to

:23:25.:23:29.

commit to the tackle and by then it was too late. The key was that first

:23:30.:23:33.

pass. Shingler had two forwards outside him and he threaded the ball

:23:34.:23:41.

between them. A killer pass and perhaps not a killer blow with the

:23:42.:23:45.

conversion, but it's another two points for the Scarlets. And

:23:46.:23:49.

certainly not the kind of start that Edinburgh would have wanted. But for

:23:50.:23:57.

all this is a difficult place to come to they would have wanted a

:23:58.:23:59.

better start than that, in seven minutes they have gone seven points

:24:00.:24:04.

down. The score their Scarlets seven, Edinburgh nil. Along the

:24:05.:24:15.

restart this time. -- a longer restart this time from Edinburgh,

:24:16.:24:20.

almost charged down again. Rhodri Williams is departing this season at

:24:21.:24:28.

the end of five years, he was saying this week how his focus remains on

:24:29.:24:31.

making sure that Scarlets stay in the business end of the Pro12.

:24:32.:24:45.

This is a better, quicker throw from Edinburgh, a flat pass taken. Sam

:24:46.:24:54.

Beard had half of Wales coming in on top of him. Edinburgh need to get

:24:55.:24:58.

some ball, they need to have time on the game. They need to play in

:24:59.:25:08.

Scarlets territory for a while and they haven't quite got there at any

:25:09.:25:11.

point. That was a slightly risky pass. This is a good chance now.

:25:12.:25:16.

They have Du Preez inside again, to Beard. Better movement, faster

:25:17.:25:23.

movement, from Edinburgh. Good pass, the forwards piling in, Du Preez has

:25:24.:25:29.

come off the game again and good variety, good accuracy from

:25:30.:25:32.

Edinburgh. Good defence from Scarlets. Because they have got

:25:33.:25:38.

control of the position again. Through Burleigh's arms. He took his

:25:39.:25:52.

I off it. Sam Beard going in where bigger men should be. For the first

:25:53.:26:00.

time Edinburgh have managed to retain possession for a couple of

:26:01.:26:09.

minutes. Burley changes -- Burleigh changes his mind. Every time

:26:10.:26:15.

Edinburgh man gets it there is a man rushing to tackle him. Very quick on

:26:16.:26:20.

the first ball carrier. Same again, they have two players back and at

:26:21.:26:23.

some point Edinburgh have to gamble on going over the top. Du Preez

:26:24.:26:27.

releases the ball to the left and again Scarlets stream back and

:26:28.:26:36.

Fowles has a dart. A good game, really abrasive game. First ten

:26:37.:26:45.

minutes planet -- plenty of action. Almost caught flat-footed in the

:26:46.:26:48.

first 20 seconds but paid the penalty, a half-break, Fowles again.

:26:49.:26:56.

Tonks joins the line. This time John Andress taken down. Fowles again

:26:57.:27:07.

comes to the right. Toolis, the latest score in Glasgow, Ulster

:27:08.:27:11.

three, Glasgow five, action everywhere tonight and tomorrow of

:27:12.:27:15.

course, Lee Jones with that try from Glasgow. Putting them 5-0 up, good

:27:16.:27:20.

pressure from Glasgow and off the ball here, off the ball down below

:27:21.:27:27.

us to our right Anton Bresler engaged. There is a flag, I'm not

:27:28.:27:32.

surprised, I'm not surprised there's a flag, and this could be a big

:27:33.:27:37.

decision. Let's listen in. REFEREE: The red tent has reacted

:27:38.:27:43.

with a swinging arm. No connection. But obviously first offence, four

:27:44.:27:54.

ten, red tent has reacted, we will reverse the penalty. Do you agree?

:27:55.:28:00.

Just a push? Your recommendation as a penalty against him? That decision

:28:01.:28:07.

swings -- seems to have swung backwards and forwards, let's listen

:28:08.:28:10.

to the conclusion. Read Kenned Steven Shingler. Clearly a right hip

:28:11.:28:18.

on you, you have reacted by pushing. The penalty is against you. Yes?

:28:19.:28:25.

Let's join Andy Nicol because he had a good few of that, I think? I did,

:28:26.:28:33.

there's no doubt that Bresler took Shingler high and there was a bit of

:28:34.:28:36.

afters, but Shingler definitely threw a punch as far as I could see.

:28:37.:28:39.

They didn't connect but it doesn't matter, the intent was there, so it

:28:40.:28:43.

was a penalty against Edinburgh. I think it should have been overturned

:28:44.:28:47.

and reversed and a penalty for Edinburgh. John Beattie? The

:28:48.:28:51.

allegation is the tackle is late, it's high, it looks high, and they

:28:52.:28:56.

are off camera there. This is definitely high and swinging and

:28:57.:29:02.

unnecessary. I don't know if we will see the second incident or not.

:29:03.:29:06.

Well, the crowd saw that and made their feelings quite clear, because

:29:07.:29:10.

in the way of things these days the review is there for everyone to see.

:29:11.:29:17.

So anyway, a big moment, and Shingler again managed to pull his

:29:18.:29:20.

hands away cleverly there. The ball kicked nicely into his arms and

:29:21.:29:25.

again, Edinburgh just falling off the tackles. Michael Collins taking

:29:26.:29:32.

it in. Turning back towards the traffic. Left again. Most of the

:29:33.:29:40.

Scarlets' possession coming to the left and coming through the hands of

:29:41.:29:44.

Morgan Allen, number eight, who got the first score six minutes. Just

:29:45.:29:53.

the retention by Scarlets is very, very effective and when they swing

:29:54.:29:58.

the ball they swing it with some confidence. They are also breaking

:29:59.:30:01.

more tackles on Edinburgh at the moment. They missed the tackle,

:30:02.:30:08.

missed the kick off. Missing too many and they have managed to turn

:30:09.:30:12.

it over. They did well to hold the Scarlets player off the ground.

:30:13.:30:20.

The challenge of gaining possession, Van Der Merwe is stripping off for

:30:21.:30:27.

some reason, not the best of nights to do that, changing his shirt

:30:28.:30:33.

already. That is where the arm wrestle took place, before it

:30:34.:30:37.

eventually hit the deck. Nowadays, I think the referees are telling the

:30:38.:30:41.

players that you can get one me down, that is the more overcome you

:30:42.:30:45.

will see the players scramble, King is a great player. Three or four

:30:46.:30:49.

years ago, he was one of the best in the world. The Edinburgh players

:30:50.:30:54.

wrapped him up, it could be disappointing if Andress is injured,

:30:55.:30:58.

this is not the first front line, front Row for Edinburgh. They are

:30:59.:31:04.

confident. I think at the moment Edinburgh have made a couple of

:31:05.:31:08.

basic mistakes, they missed the tackles, a try. Getting robbed of

:31:09.:31:14.

the ball, stupid stuff from Bresler. Up in the scrums. I think that the

:31:15.:31:19.

Scarlets are looking confident. The reality is, the score does not

:31:20.:31:23.

reflect the chances that scholars have had in the opening 15 minutes,

:31:24.:31:29.

less than. To have those converted in 20 seconds, that would have been

:31:30.:31:37.

a huge blow. It looks like here's up and not exactly running. This was a

:31:38.:31:40.

brilliant handoff, for the number eight to run like that. He is stocky

:31:41.:31:46.

and strong. He is not that tall but he is bulky. That kind of player in

:31:47.:31:51.

this environment, that picture looks as if it is wet but it is hard. You

:31:52.:31:58.

can fly on that pitch Cash that pitch -- that pitch. He has enough

:31:59.:32:05.

confidence to take on the Edinburgh defence. Van Der Merwe, the

:32:06.:32:11.

competition's top scorer with six tries. That is a good scrum,

:32:12.:32:15.

Edinburgh have a great scrum tonight. The referee leaves it with

:32:16.:32:22.

Edinburgh. They had a bit of a ramble. It's the old thing of front

:32:23.:32:28.

rows, the very last thing you have to do is go forward -- rumble. Look

:32:29.:32:39.

at that turf being ripped up, 80 minutes of that, there would be a

:32:40.:32:46.

lot left of it! It will rip up. Some suggestion that we may have a shower

:32:47.:32:51.

or two in the evening, it is bitterly cold now. I do hope we get

:32:52.:32:59.

to see the under 20 players tonight, I think it's a big story that they

:33:00.:33:05.

are on the bench tonight. Those two boys will be capped the future. They

:33:06.:33:09.

are very good players. It's a penalty for Edinburgh, another

:33:10.:33:17.

busting for inverse. We were watching Blair Kinghorn kicking in a

:33:18.:33:20.

pre-match routine. It was impressive. He was not exactly

:33:21.:33:25.

kicking it and it was flying over the post from well-known the halfway

:33:26.:33:29.

line. People did not hear the result last week with Scotland, the under

:33:30.:33:33.

20s scored four tries to beat the English side, you can go to the

:33:34.:33:38.

website and look at Kinghorn's try. He flew past all of the English

:33:39.:33:46.

defenders. The Windies swirling -- the wind is swirling now. It was

:33:47.:33:50.

left to right at the start of the game, it clearly held up. That did

:33:51.:33:54.

not go the distance it should have. There must be some sort of effect

:33:55.:33:58.

over there, the stadium is not completely enclosed. We can feel on

:33:59.:34:05.

our faces left-to-right. Over there, I suspect the stands are creating

:34:06.:34:09.

some sort of effect. Catching the ball. The wind looks to be right

:34:10.:34:14.

behind the Scarlets. It is a great stadium for people who have not been

:34:15.:34:20.

here on the outskirts of town, it is the kind of stadium that Edinburgh

:34:21.:34:24.

would want. A fantastic stadium, not the biggest crowd ever because, I

:34:25.:34:30.

suppose, of the other rugby fixtures this weekend, a lot going on. The

:34:31.:34:35.

Scottish invasion this morning, I think I was the only person on the

:34:36.:34:38.

plane without a kilt! Probably just as well!

:34:39.:34:47.

Just the flag on the far side, the linesman with it, gently rippling

:34:48.:34:56.

and kicking off. It indicates a change in the wind. The Scarlets

:34:57.:35:08.

have it. Ready to rumble. This is the danger area for all teams these

:35:09.:35:12.

days. They have a penalty coming. Edinburgh have collapsed. The

:35:13.:35:19.

Scarlets attack is out again, looking for Van Der Merwe. They have

:35:20.:35:23.

the ball which has blown over his head. It was a kick to nothing. They

:35:24.:35:28.

knew that it was a free ball, they had the penalty. The Scarlets set up

:35:29.:35:36.

the rear drive, you cannot, in that area, collapse the ball, you get a

:35:37.:35:43.

penalty against you. It is a free ball. They will kick at ball, Andy

:35:44.:35:48.

Nichol, is that the decision we would have expected there? I suspect

:35:49.:35:51.

with three points. There was a decision before that was

:35:52.:35:56.

interesting. The Scarlets had a choice of scrum or line-out, they

:35:57.:35:59.

took the line-out. It is testament to how strongly Edinburgh scrum has

:36:00.:36:06.

been so far. Look at the scoreline, it proves that set pieces are one

:36:07.:36:11.

thing but the rest of the players are ready important.

:36:12.:36:25.

This is by no means a guinea, the wind is clearly a factor. -- gimme.

:36:26.:36:44.

He gives it a huge hoof, and he blasts it through the posts. They

:36:45.:36:54.

deserved that. He's been kicking at 64%. Two successful kicks. He's

:36:55.:37:05.

looked good, Shingler, calm, on form, collected, Edinburgh are up in

:37:06.:37:11.

the scrums but not making use of possession, making too many mistakes

:37:12.:37:17.

compared to the Scarlets. The ball hanging in the air again. The

:37:18.:37:22.

Scarlets sussed it out, they are first to it every time. Ten points.

:37:23.:37:28.

But they have lost that one. The ball goes forward.

:37:29.:37:33.

The referee agrees that it was a ricochet forward. Some of the

:37:34.:37:41.

accuracy is still not there, that is possibly due to the conditions? I

:37:42.:37:45.

think it is the tension of the night as well. A lot of players here

:37:46.:37:49.

thinking it is a big game and they have two win. It's a bit about arm

:37:50.:37:59.

wrestle. -- of an arm wrestle. You would expect Edinburgh to have an

:38:00.:38:02.

advantage, scholars want to move it wide. Dupre is at number eight...

:38:03.:38:10.

For Edinburgh, when he gets the ball, he can really set down the

:38:11.:38:21.

tackle. -- du Preez. We haven't seen the Hamish Watson effect yet. When

:38:22.:38:25.

he explodes along the side of the pitch in particular. The referee is

:38:26.:38:32.

beginning to lose patience with the scrum, but I think he understands

:38:33.:38:37.

the underfoot conditions. I think he's picked up on someone. We

:38:38.:38:42.

discussed, stability was a minimum requirement, we hold the head, take

:38:43.:38:48.

off the pressure. I cannot make my message clearer. They aren't going

:38:49.:38:52.

to take the pressure off, you aren't going to settle down for the scrum

:38:53.:38:56.

and take the pressure off, you keep it on. No way will a team take the

:38:57.:39:04.

pressure off. Certainly not in this area of the pitch. Try again.

:39:05.:39:12.

Crouch, blinds... Burley is to the left, Hoyland...

:39:13.:39:28.

Drifting in. WHISTLE They have blasted the Scarlets

:39:29.:39:33.

there. That was very impressive. You try and edge out games, Edinburgh

:39:34.:39:40.

are structured. The coach brought a game plan in, the forwards taking

:39:41.:39:47.

the pass off now. It appears he has two good front rows, the

:39:48.:39:52.

International one starting tomorrow and this one. This is quite

:39:53.:39:57.

abrasive, they have a lot of weight here. Coleman slips in, making sure

:39:58.:40:03.

he helps and taking the loose prop head. Clever stuff. We spotted this

:40:04.:40:11.

earlier in the match as well, Nathan Fowles was practising his kicks. He

:40:12.:40:19.

did not seem to be bringing toxin to the firing range in terms of

:40:20.:40:23.

kicking. Whether it is a practical thing or an injury, I'm not sure --

:40:24.:40:29.

Tonks. He was pulling to the left in the warm up. Let's look and see if

:40:30.:40:44.

he has managed to compensate. Well, he took a lot of time about it, and

:40:45.:40:49.

he strikes it sweetly. He has managed to compensate, getting

:40:50.:40:58.

Edinburgh on the board. There is an injury in the Scarlets 22, Shingler.

:40:59.:41:02.

I think Shingler, the starting ten, is there. I think their medic has

:41:03.:41:11.

waived... He has a Dan Biggar injury, he has gone over on his

:41:12.:41:15.

ankle, I assume that's what he's done, he was nowhere near the

:41:16.:41:21.

playing area. He walking gingerly. He is done. The substitute is coming

:41:22.:41:30.

on, Aled Thomas. He's been kicking at 81%, he's contributed 62 points

:41:31.:41:37.

to the Scarlets effort this season. The machine line of number ten in

:41:38.:41:44.

Wales for ten years. It's unfortunate not only for Shingler

:41:45.:41:46.

but the Scarlets, he was a key figure.

:41:47.:41:52.

We will come back to that. Burley. He did not quite get that one.

:41:53.:41:59.

Steven Shingler has gone, Aled Thomas is at number 22 slotting in.

:42:00.:42:07.

13 conversions, 12 penalties. He knows the way to go, whether he can

:42:08.:42:13.

contribute the same running and same strategic control that Shingler had,

:42:14.:42:22.

that remains to be seen. This is his first contribution. Almost an

:42:23.:42:27.

identical pass. Taking out two Edinburgh defenders with one pass.

:42:28.:42:30.

They need it back quickly, the Scarlets.

:42:31.:42:42.

The crowd are appealing. Van Der Merwe waits in the line, using him

:42:43.:42:56.

as a decoy in some ways. Aaron Shingler takes it in this time.

:42:57.:43:05.

Meanwhile, Van Der Merwe disappears into the middle of the field, and it

:43:06.:43:10.

is a penalty. Good pressure from the Scarlets. They play a different way

:43:11.:43:18.

to Edinburgh, Edinburgh have structure, that first move went to

:43:19.:43:22.

the right wing. Then it came to the left wing with the same move, trying

:43:23.:43:29.

to pass the ball. This was the forward not rolling out of the way,

:43:30.:43:33.

for a cheap penalty. The Scarlets are playing wide early. Edinburgh

:43:34.:43:40.

tried to bash up runners off ten. More variety in the Scarlets

:43:41.:43:49.

approach. They have got possession. Aled Thomas, his first shot at

:43:50.:43:50.

goal... He kept it flat but straight. He

:43:51.:44:10.

kept it long enough. And it was enough. Another three points for the

:44:11.:44:18.

Scarlets. It's a ten point game now. 13-3. Clearly a comfortable

:44:19.:44:23.

conversion, you would expect that from someone kicking at 80 plus

:44:24.:44:32.

percent. Another tick in the box for the Scarlets and another challenge

:44:33.:44:36.

for a number. Let's rejoin Andy Nichol down at the

:44:37.:44:42.

far end of the pitch. Aled Thomas has come off of the bench. He got

:44:43.:44:47.

that kick over, I think it was a key moment, Shingler has been a class

:44:48.:44:52.

act controlling the game, looking dangerous. The kicking has been

:44:53.:44:56.

good, going off injured so early is a big blow to Scarlets. Can

:44:57.:45:01.

Edinburgh exploit that? 13-3 down, they need to get a try and they

:45:02.:45:06.

could get back in the game and get an impact into this first half. This

:45:07.:45:14.

is Morgan Allen taking it in. I think Kieran is out there. Neil

:45:15.:45:18.

Cochrane getting his head the wrong way and is caught. He does not move

:45:19.:45:23.

too much and he isn't moving as we watch him now to much. They thought

:45:24.:45:30.

he was lying side, you have to be careful with these lads, Cochrane

:45:31.:45:34.

has played in group rugby all the way up, a good throw, and abrasive

:45:35.:45:39.

around the pitch. It shows if you are going to tackle a heavy number

:45:40.:45:43.

eight, you need your head on the right-sided. Whether he meant it or

:45:44.:45:47.

not. Just watch the way he was tackling. It is a shame. These

:45:48.:45:55.

disruptions aren't helping either side. Leinster are issuing an attack

:45:56.:46:00.

to zebra, I suppose. 26-0 to Zebre -- Zebre. Glass go holding

:46:01.:46:19.

Ulster, 3-5. That game started at half past seven, they are well into

:46:20.:46:26.

the match. -- Glasgow. You'll Cochrane has to be careful, of a

:46:27.:46:33.

head knock curve some kind, they are going to take him off.

:46:34.:46:41.

George Turner has come on, we will see whether it is temporary or

:46:42.:46:45.

permanent, I suspect looking at Neil Cochrane going off that we won't see

:46:46.:46:49.

him back. The rules are clear, we go on about it a lot, but if you

:46:50.:46:54.

suspect any sort of concussion, you cannot come back on. Off the top

:46:55.:47:04.

from Scarlets, Van Der Merwe appears in the middle of the field. As we

:47:05.:47:12.

heard earlier, that is a great kick. Tonks has to turn, no room to move

:47:13.:47:20.

on his left foot. Van Der Merwe manages to swing at three passes

:47:21.:47:24.

along the other side of the pitch, having a blast. The hooker appears

:47:25.:47:31.

at left wing. Taking it in. Now, the prop. Phil John on a charge. Righty.

:47:32.:47:49.

They play middle, white, middle. -- wide. Edinburgh have a great break

:47:50.:47:56.

from the number the far side, taking it in. Brown ducked and weaved his

:47:57.:48:01.

way through, he didn't have enough support but there may be a chance

:48:02.:48:03.

here. Sam Beard takes take sitting. That red shirt is lying where it

:48:04.:48:24.

should not be. A driving Edinburgh side back. Slightly high... Out to

:48:25.:48:32.

the left wing again, to Brown. Plenty of pace in the Edinburgh

:48:33.:48:36.

backline as well, and here they come up the middle. To list is the engine

:48:37.:48:47.

room tonight, extra men, the dummy run from Bresler. Edinburgh have

:48:48.:48:56.

possession but not territory, they aren't making a lot of ground.

:48:57.:49:04.

Burley breaks it this time, and they manage to keep it in.

:49:05.:49:17.

On they go, moving it quickly. It is a basketball on the far side. The

:49:18.:49:29.

referee has saved Edinburgh. I thought it was George Earle but in

:49:30.:49:34.

that case it is the big South African. George Earle neither rules.

:49:35.:49:42.

He was way up the pitch. The Scarlets had the ball but you cannot

:49:43.:49:46.

fly in and take someone up the ruck, you have to bind.

:49:47.:49:58.

You cannot just come in, fly in and smash someone, probably because you

:49:59.:50:05.

will line up against him in the next line-up. He only arrived in West

:50:06.:50:16.

Wales a week or so ago, we understand. George Turner delivering

:50:17.:50:31.

the ball here. It's 10-54 Ulster now, that is very late the game. --

:50:32.:50:35.

it is 10-5, for Ulster. Lack -- Black scored for Ulster.

:50:36.:50:46.

Edinburgh are desperately trying to get back into the game. Truth be

:50:47.:50:52.

told, the scoreline could have been worse. It may be that they have the

:50:53.:50:57.

conditions in their favour for the second half. Come on, referee. Their

:50:58.:51:05.

number six was lying all over the ball.

:51:06.:51:12.

The referee is not having it. Common takes the ball in, he's tackled by

:51:13.:51:19.

George Earle, the number four. Shingler knows exactly what he's

:51:20.:51:22.

doing comedy is counting in his head... Then he was going to get out

:51:23.:51:28.

the way but the referee had blown for a scrum. Very clever! He's a big

:51:29.:51:32.

unit. I would say he's the biggest player on the pitch. Even the

:51:33.:51:39.

tallest. But overall, I think he's the biggest unit. I think he's quite

:51:40.:51:45.

capable of pulling himself about, flopping in the right place.

:51:46.:51:58.

Edinburgh are coming more into it. More plays through forwards, and in

:51:59.:52:01.

the back division. The Scarlets are much wider in their attack. Going

:52:02.:52:06.

one way to the other. Edinburgh are trucking up, to the middle of the

:52:07.:52:11.

pitch. They are yet to profit from this scrum.

:52:12.:52:24.

That is the halfway line. He is going to move them back. They

:52:25.:52:34.

are going to have another go, slightly further in, almost on the

:52:35.:52:40.

centre spot, if there was one. You can see Van Der Merwe just wretched

:52:41.:52:45.

off, he is going to have a shot now. -- stretching. We have been yet to

:52:46.:52:53.

see him, Van Der Merwe is on the extreme to write. He's been all over

:52:54.:52:58.

the backline, he has appeared everywhere. It's just not working.

:52:59.:53:08.

Your point about the pitch is very good. The new Murrayfield pitch, it

:53:09.:53:13.

is the semisynthetic pitch, it does not have much of this, rugby has to

:53:14.:53:18.

think carefully about what we play on. You cannot play on pitches where

:53:19.:53:24.

studs slip and props can make excuses, look at the mark behind

:53:25.:53:29.

them! This pitch is not adequate now, these kinds are not adequate

:53:30.:53:37.

for top-level rugby. Not fit for purpose is the commonly used phrase,

:53:38.:53:44.

the same in football, at the moment, the Edinburgh midfield... Down they

:53:45.:53:47.

go again. I think in modern rugby you cannot have a pitch where the

:53:48.:53:52.

studs slip, because props can claim it was not them. It's not just a

:53:53.:53:58.

safety issue but a technical point. A technical issue and I think for

:53:59.:54:07.

spectators. Look at the Brown patches on the pitch. Andras's

:54:08.:54:11.

feature just go, there he is, number three. For Edinburgh. You cannot

:54:12.:54:20.

have that. -- John Andress's feet just go.

:54:21.:54:30.

This time, Edinburgh do well. They've managed to recycle. They are

:54:31.:54:41.

getting there. We hear the Edinburgh change, Neil Cochrane went off,

:54:42.:54:45.

that's a permanent change now, so George Turner will stay as her

:54:46.:54:54.

cover. -- will stay as a hooker. We understand there was an injury

:54:55.:54:57.

assessment taking place, which we assume has not enabled him to play

:54:58.:55:04.

on, he's been withdrawn. Not nearly straight, I think. Edinburgh have

:55:05.:55:11.

it, they have it on the left. Where there are men aplenty. Straight

:55:12.:55:17.

through! Tom Brown again... A loose pass. The loose pass at the very end

:55:18.:55:23.

is the one that has beaten Edinburgh. The home crowd are

:55:24.:55:30.

incensed, right back to the very first throw in. It was their

:55:31.:55:37.

throwing! You play advantage. Edinburgh took advantage, they did

:55:38.:55:45.

well, using width, they had a great throw straight through. I think

:55:46.:55:48.

Edinburgh are on the verge of doing something tonight. Their team-3 down

:55:49.:55:53.

but you cannot say that the Scarlets are much better than them. -- they

:55:54.:56:04.

are 13-3 down. At half-time, they would say that they are only ten

:56:05.:56:08.

points down, they've had a bit of a shoo-in. If it was not for the bad

:56:09.:56:12.

kick-off at the start, where they messed up, they did not buy... They

:56:13.:56:16.

brought the wrong attack. When Scarlet bought the try, Morgan Allen

:56:17.:56:25.

went out on the left wing. I think at the moment, the more you look at

:56:26.:56:29.

the game, the more Edinburgh played to the right, the more they attack.

:56:30.:56:33.

More injuries in the red shirts. I think Andy's point about Shingler

:56:34.:56:40.

going off, that could be the big turning point? You are right,

:56:41.:56:43.

Edinburgh are coming back into the game but they cannot get the points,

:56:44.:56:48.

whether a penalty try at 33, with Scarlets getting that score now, it

:56:49.:56:53.

takes it away from Edinburgh and sets up things for Edinburgh. --

:56:54.:56:59.

sets up things for them. They just have to keep the scoreboard ticking

:57:00.:57:03.

over and have a big assault in the second half. Ten minutes or so

:57:04.:57:15.

remaining in the first half... Wait! It has rebounded, it was so swift it

:57:16.:57:22.

even took the Scarlets by surprise. Where did it go? Same again, lads.

:57:23.:57:27.

I'm not sure that same again is what we need! It's not even funny.

:57:28.:57:35.

Actually, that was right into the lap of Nathan Fowles. If he picked

:57:36.:57:40.

it up it could have been reset. To Edinburgh. But I think that

:57:41.:57:47.

Edinburgh... That last lineout, they did it well. The scrums are doing

:57:48.:57:51.

well. The engine rooms are firing well. I think they will miss comb

:57:52.:57:59.

and when he goes, that old-fashioned School Of Hard Knocks number six. --

:58:00.:58:11.

Coman. They are having a job disentangling from the surface.

:58:12.:58:19.

Upfield by Williams. They managed to get hold of Aled

:58:20.:58:36.

Thomas. Before they make ground. Tonks is down, he's left a huge gap

:58:37.:58:42.

behind him. Edinburgh have stolen it again, fouls goes down the line, a

:58:43.:58:48.

good and clever kick. Acres of space on this side of the field. Edinburgh

:58:49.:58:57.

may look to bring Allen and Sam Beard in. Two Edinburgh players are

:58:58.:59:02.

down. I think the referee is going to have

:59:03.:59:07.

to stop this. There are two injuries to Edinburgh's players at the

:59:08.:59:12.

moment. A good break by Owen up the right-hand side, the curse of last

:59:13.:59:15.

week for Scotland, the occasional untidy ruck. Scotland do something,

:59:16.:59:23.

I think everyone has written them off, it is quite nice to play when

:59:24.:59:27.

everyone has written you off! What an occasion to turn up in Cardiff

:59:28.:59:32.

and do something. At the moment, Edinburgh, I think, deserve to get

:59:33.:59:36.

more out of this game. They've not been as untidy as the Scarlets. The

:59:37.:59:41.

mistakes have given way to promise, more attacking, more confidence,

:59:42.:59:46.

ball in hand, a couple of injuries. If Edinburgh get points on the

:59:47.:59:50.

board, they will have a sniff in the second half. You sound like a man

:59:51.:59:53.

who has been there and done that, you were once written off in Cardiff

:59:54.:59:58.

and did something about it? We've all played, every Scottish player

:59:59.:00:03.

has been written off at almost every season or every time, then you try

:00:04.:00:06.

and prove people wrong. That is what happens. He is running rather

:00:07.:00:12.

gingerly... Here he is, having to take part now. He was shaking in his

:00:13.:00:19.

shoulders, not looking right. I wonder if we will see Blair Kinghorn

:00:20.:00:24.

a bit earlier than even we would have wanted or expected. He has a

:00:25.:00:28.

bit of something else. Hyde, a good off-load, Burleigh

:00:29.:00:41.

could have gone on. Five metres. Five metres, Fowles has it. In it

:00:42.:00:48.

goes. Five metres again, they need patience, they need precision. Their

:00:49.:00:52.

bodies everywhere at the moment, Edinburgh, try again. Scarlets, is

:00:53.:00:59.

the cry. Edinburgh pile in stock they have one of their players down

:01:00.:01:04.

on the 22 metre line, they go left, right, the middle. I think there are

:01:05.:01:07.

two Edinburgh players out of the action, that one we can see, I'm not

:01:08.:01:13.

sure who it is. Its Burleigh, not exactly running, I'm not sure who it

:01:14.:01:22.

is on the other side. Here is Tonks. Again, committing everything to the

:01:23.:01:26.

ruck there come in they go again, they are underneath the posts. It's

:01:27.:01:30.

the first time they've been in this range, in this territory. Another

:01:31.:01:37.

blast. Number eight per Morgan Allen, blocking the play, clearly.

:01:38.:01:44.

They have turned it over. He managed to get his body in the way and that

:01:45.:01:49.

is not a good kick, because this has come to Hoyland and he has got

:01:50.:01:54.

plenty of gas. He has come this way. He has hit a thick wall, which is

:01:55.:01:58.

called Van der Merwe. He went through it, to be fair to him. That

:01:59.:02:04.

was spectacular, Edinburgh have and the full condiment, I'm not sure

:02:05.:02:09.

they are all fit enough. -- full complement. Hamish Watson. Bang.

:02:10.:02:16.

Fowles, they need to bit quicker but it's a bit more direct from

:02:17.:02:23.

Edinburgh. -- they need it a bit quicker. Scarlets not committing too

:02:24.:02:27.

many men. There are a lot of them on this side but they are thin on the

:02:28.:02:31.

left, which is where Edinburgh are going. The crowd are shouting for

:02:32.:02:35.

crossing, and they are still thin on the far side, the Scarlets. Du Preez

:02:36.:02:40.

has spotted that. He has taken it in and they piling on top of him.

:02:41.:02:44.

Fowles will come this way. Watson is lining up under penalty to

:02:45.:02:55.

Edinburgh. A good spell, John. Yes, some of these Edinburgh players have

:02:56.:02:57.

turned up tonight. Toolis has turned up. That was a great break. You

:02:58.:03:00.

think of the way Tonks and Hoyland are running, and Burleigh, you have

:03:01.:03:03.

Fowles playing well. Edinburgh must be thinking, we deserve to have more

:03:04.:03:07.

out of this game. This is the break, this is Toolis, steps up, that's a

:03:08.:03:11.

lovely off-load and right through the gap and out to Coman, Coman gets

:03:12.:03:18.

it and gets injured here. No wonder. There was a split second when

:03:19.:03:23.

Burleigh was through when you thought if he had nicked his

:03:24.:03:25.

shoulder and gone right he might have gone the whole way himself,

:03:26.:03:31.

however, the end result is in Nathan Fowles' hands. The clock is going to

:03:32.:03:35.

run down. We made very well be seeing the last play of the first

:03:36.:03:40.

half. It looks like it. If you can spin this out long enough. It will

:03:41.:03:47.

be for Andrew Brace to decide whether we see anymore.

:03:48.:03:58.

He has hit the post, it was the final play and luckily the Scarlets

:03:59.:04:08.

the ball dropped in their lap. How hard is that, John? Just a quick

:04:09.:04:12.

mention for Hamish Watson and Hoyland, who both carried the ball.

:04:13.:04:18.

Edinburgh needed that kicks, needed that kick, 13-6 it would have been.

:04:19.:04:22.

It's the post. You need to do little things like stick points on the

:04:23.:04:26.

board. He was willing it over but they are still in play. He runs into

:04:27.:04:31.

Hamish Watson, Burleigh, there. Du Preez, there is still a chance. The

:04:32.:04:36.

ball is live, the clock is red. At the end of this passage of play, oh,

:04:37.:04:47.

that could be. In fact, that is it. Ending in the most horrible of ways

:04:48.:04:49.

and complete frustration for Edinburgh, just as they were

:04:50.:04:52.

beginning to turn the tide. A really good game, very competitive on both

:04:53.:04:56.

sides, with chances aplenty. Scarlets have converted the better

:04:57.:05:01.

bunch of the chances. They lead comfortably, but not overwhelmingly,

:05:02.:05:05.

it has to be said, adding Debra going with some hope, I would say,

:05:06.:05:10.

because the score as we have it is Scarlets 13, Edinburgh three --

:05:11.:05:19.

Edinburgh going with some hope. Edinburgh will be disappointed at

:05:20.:05:23.

the half wishing, putting pressure on the Scarlets side, if only they

:05:24.:05:28.

had got across the line it would be more competitive. All the analysis

:05:29.:05:32.

to come and we will look ahead to Scotland against Wales in the Six

:05:33.:05:36.

Nations as well but the Pro12 is up and running not just here but across

:05:37.:05:40.

the country. Glasgow are in action as well, up against Ulster. Let's

:05:41.:05:41.

see the updated scores. as well, up against Ulster. Let's

:05:42.:05:43.

see the updated scores. These latest scores. Connacht at the top of the

:05:44.:05:49.

Pro12, that was last night, finished by 26-21 at Rodney Parade. Leinster,

:05:50.:05:55.

who are currently in fourth place in the Pro12, running away with it

:05:56.:06:01.

against Zebre and Glasgow were 5-3 ahead against Ulster but have

:06:02.:06:04.

converted a try at the Kingspan, Glasgow are up against it. That much

:06:05.:06:13.

nicked off at 7:30pm. -- that match kicked off. Here at Scala Tupac --

:06:14.:06:17.

here at Scarlets' Park, what about kicked off. Here at Scala Tupac --

:06:18.:06:20.

here at Scarlets' Park, what about the Edinburgh point of view? A poor

:06:21.:06:25.

start, a slow start, but they worked their way back in the game and that

:06:26.:06:30.

last five minutes of the first half was symptomatic of maybe Scotland's

:06:31.:06:34.

rugby last week, they promised so much, they get to a good position,

:06:35.:06:37.

more than last week's Edinburgh should have scored, they should have

:06:38.:06:42.

had the composure to work the ball once they got in behind but Coman

:06:43.:06:46.

got tackled so short that they were five yards from the line. They

:06:47.:06:48.

should have had the composure to score a try, not just a penalty. As

:06:49.:06:53.

it turned out they didn't get anything any it might cost them in

:06:54.:06:58.

the second half. The last ten minutes of the first half and the

:06:59.:07:03.

first ten minutes of the second half of usually important and the

:07:04.:07:05.

beginning is hugely important, a poor start for Edinburgh.

:07:06.:07:06.

beginning is hugely important, a poor start for Edinburgh. It quickly

:07:07.:07:15.

lead to a try. The kick-off was misjudged. Van der Merwe loves to

:07:16.:07:17.

score tries, almost got one within ten seconds. This led to field

:07:18.:07:22.

position. This is a big long -- big long pass by Shingler. Hoyland does

:07:23.:07:26.

well in a sense, waiting and biding his time but he has to make a tackle

:07:27.:07:31.

and Morgan Allen goes in, we talked up before the game, a knows what

:07:32.:07:39.

he's doing, good pace. A big long pass, pass, Hoyland buys time, he is

:07:40.:07:43.

tracking back, wanting support there, he then has to make the

:07:44.:07:47.

tackle and he doesn't. There is a wait of up -- there is a bit of a

:07:48.:07:50.

weight differential bot Hoyland makes the tackle. A good finish. A

:07:51.:07:53.

class act. Look at the size of him. He was prominent early on but he got

:07:54.:07:59.

quieter as the half went on because Edinburgh managed to work their way

:08:00.:08:02.

back into the game. If you are going to score, concede a try, make sure

:08:03.:08:06.

it's early and it gives you a chance to get back. Moving the ball through

:08:07.:08:11.

well, fairly clinical, you see the white line coming up and unable to

:08:12.:08:17.

get over it? That was it, the was one chance, one opportunity and they

:08:18.:08:21.

took it. It was a Paul Stocker Edinburgh, not just straight off the

:08:22.:08:25.

kick-off, it was a few minutes later but testament to how poorly

:08:26.:08:29.

Edinburgh started the game -- it was a poor start for Edinburgh. There

:08:30.:08:34.

were poor set pieces, particularly the Edinburgh scrum, we don't have

:08:35.:08:37.

the international front row but not really capitalising on the

:08:38.:08:42.

dominance. It's still a very important that piece. You can see

:08:43.:08:46.

it's a penalty here for Edinburgh, but you know, look at the scoreline,

:08:47.:08:51.

13-3, they have not really taken advantage of having the platform.

:08:52.:08:56.

They get the penalty and there is a swirling wind but Burleigh has to

:08:57.:09:00.

find touch. That's missed by ten yards. Scarlets but in a good kick

:09:01.:09:04.

so instead of having an attacking line-out in the Scarlets' half, they

:09:05.:09:09.

are now defending their own line-out in their own 22. Must be frustrating

:09:10.:09:14.

for Alan Solomons, you can coach all week but if people are missing kicks

:09:15.:09:18.

to touch, it's frustrating. Basic mistakes, that is where frustration

:09:19.:09:22.

comes from. When you are struggling it is little things like that, you

:09:23.:09:26.

need to take the pace out of the game, kicked to touch, start the

:09:27.:09:30.

line-out, don't go for the miracle kick, get into touch and get the

:09:31.:09:33.

game started again. There were moments in the first half from an

:09:34.:09:37.

Edinburgh point of view where they moved it reasonably well, no killer

:09:38.:09:40.

touch at the end but maybe something to look forward to in the

:09:41.:09:45.

second-half potentially? This game off Scarlets line-out, some good

:09:46.:09:48.

passive here, there is space. There is good energy the team and Tom

:09:49.:09:54.

Brown gets a good hand off, gets away, and you can see exactly what

:09:55.:09:57.

he's trying to do, trying to off-load, which is the right thing

:09:58.:10:01.

to do but it wasn't as sympathetic as it needed to be. He does well

:10:02.:10:06.

here. He almost gets the ball in one hand, tries to off-load it to

:10:07.:10:10.

Michael Allen, and it just didn't go to hand. Maybe just too aggressive.

:10:11.:10:14.

This was another opportunity when Edinburgh, who got in behind, you

:10:15.:10:17.

can see the forwards are interacting with the backs. Again, they are

:10:18.:10:21.

setting up nicely, scanning, there is a good off-load from Toolis, a

:10:22.:10:27.

runaround from Burleigh. It comes to Coman, it gets to Coman, the sniper

:10:28.:10:32.

gets in there. This is the bit I was talking about, five yards from the

:10:33.:10:35.

line, quick ball, this has to be converted into a try. That's the

:10:36.:10:39.

really frustrating thing because Edinburgh, we are both standing

:10:40.:10:42.

screaming at that action towards the end of the half, they wanted to get

:10:43.:10:46.

the ball into hand and moving, there were extra men over on the right

:10:47.:10:50.

wing and the ball wasn't getting there. When you get so far in behind

:10:51.:10:54.

the defence and that close to the line you have to make good decisions

:10:55.:10:58.

because there will be gaps. Everyone is scanning, not just Phil Burleigh,

:10:59.:11:02.

everyone is offering the right line, the right angle and executing the

:11:03.:11:06.

passes. That should have been uneasy walking try. As it turned out they

:11:07.:11:10.

got the opportunity for three points but unfortunately they didn't take

:11:11.:11:14.

it. We will talk about the second half in a few minutes but everyone

:11:15.:11:19.

is here, all the Edinburgh fans here in Wales are going to Cardiff

:11:20.:11:22.

tomorrow, whether they have a ticket or not, are going to the pub, they

:11:23.:11:26.

are going to the Scotland game in the Six Nations and how important

:11:27.:11:29.

that will be after a disappointing start last week after the excitement

:11:30.:11:33.

of the World Cup, to put such a poor performance against average in

:11:34.:11:36.

Glenside, Murrayfield was such a difficult start for Scotland, was it

:11:37.:11:44.

not? You have, it was -- it was, it was a poor performance. We haven't

:11:45.:11:48.

got the luxury of being slightly off our game and still winning games,

:11:49.:11:51.

that's what needs to happen tomorrow, a better performance. I

:11:52.:11:55.

think we will, we will be better because we have had one game and we

:11:56.:11:59.

slow starters. We have only ever won once the opening weekend of the Six

:12:00.:12:03.

Nations, an incredible start, but we are always better in the second

:12:04.:12:08.

game. We will need to be. I thought Wales away was the heart of our

:12:09.:12:17.

first two games, here we are tomorrow, we have that. They are a

:12:18.:12:20.

good side, settled, dangerous, they have power throughout the team and a

:12:21.:12:23.

really good backs. Two years ago when Stuart Holbert got sent off,

:12:24.:12:27.

that was a sobering afternoon, so we won't see that tomorrow I don't

:12:28.:12:31.

think, we will see a game, two teams wanting to play and that will suit

:12:32.:12:35.

Scotland. Let's look at the things Scotland will have to improve on

:12:36.:12:38.

because there were chances against England but not clinical enough.

:12:39.:12:43.

Maybe we are seeing that night with Edinburgh. Look again how close

:12:44.:12:47.

Scotland are. It's all about making the right decisions, right to take

:12:48.:12:51.

it in there, Johnny Gray, but Billy Vunipola gets a good position and

:12:52.:13:02.

has to release it and it squirts out the side. You could argue it could

:13:03.:13:06.

be a penalty but it's all about securing the ball and compound the

:13:07.:13:09.

mistake by giving away a penalty to England. They clear the lines and go

:13:10.:13:12.

away. This was a line-out drive, I Denton at the back, Hardy is in

:13:13.:13:15.

control. Do they get it going forward? Greig Laidlaw is

:13:16.:13:19.

controlling it, Glasgow use the move a lot with Tommy Seymour coming off,

:13:20.:13:25.

it's a good move, he gets in behind but Jonathan Joseph makes a good

:13:26.:13:29.

play here. You will see it from a different angle, very physical in

:13:30.:13:32.

defence and strips the ball. It wasn't just the fact he stopped

:13:33.:13:36.

Tommy Seymour, look at the blue shirts behind. Tommy Seymour was

:13:37.:13:40.

trying to get his hands free and he has been off-loading it here. This

:13:41.:13:45.

was before half-time, 7-6 down, the clock has turned red, fin muscle

:13:46.:13:47.

gets in the right position. These are the key moments. He's that Wash

:13:48.:13:53.

snatches this, he hasn't got a goal in International Rugby Board but the

:13:54.:13:56.

difference they're going in 9-7 ahead would have been different. It

:13:57.:14:02.

was the one opportunity, he stumbled here, I don't think he saw Stuart

:14:03.:14:06.

Hall outside him, he didn't see George Ford. If he goes to Cup hobby

:14:07.:14:13.

he scores it, if he keeps it in, he wins the foot race. It was

:14:14.:14:17.

unfortunate, what happens. One change, Taylor in at 12, Matt Scott

:14:18.:14:23.

out injured but fair enough from Vern Cotter? Would you make many

:14:24.:14:29.

changes yourself? This time last week this was the best team Scotland

:14:30.:14:33.

card put out, with Matt Taylor in there it's the right call. They

:14:34.:14:36.

didn't play well, give them another chance. If they don't perform

:14:37.:14:39.

tomorrow, make changes. Duncan Taylor in the Matt Scott, much of a

:14:40.:14:43.

muchness, Duncan Taylor has been playing really well for Saracens.

:14:44.:14:48.

That match up against Jamie Roberts tomorrow will be outstanding because

:14:49.:14:51.

Jamie Roberts up last week was against Ireland was unbelievable. So

:14:52.:14:56.

physical, none of us would fancy playing against him, he's such a

:14:57.:15:02.

monster. Let's talk about Lin Russell, during the World Cup he was

:15:03.:15:07.

such a star, last season for Glasgow he was such a star, maybe he is off

:15:08.:15:12.

the boil and I imagine Scotland will need a big performance from him who

:15:13.:15:16.

are quality players. It doesn't happen individually with Finn

:15:17.:15:21.

Russell. It was because we didn't get quick ball and that is what

:15:22.:15:24.

every team is looking for. Every attacking team is looking for quick

:15:25.:15:28.

ball, every defensive side wants to slow down quick ball. England did

:15:29.:15:33.

that very well. We said it was poor decision-making last week for

:15:34.:15:35.

Scotland, which it was. It doesn't just mean macro to Russell, it was

:15:36.:15:43.

everyone, -- Finn Russell. It's about supporting in the right way.

:15:44.:15:48.

It's a collective. Another week's training, the accuracy has to be

:15:49.:15:53.

better. That was what was poor, in contact, when Johnny Greg took it

:15:54.:15:57.

in, the accuracy, we lost ball and contact more often than not last

:15:58.:16:01.

week and that is poor. We will see better decisions I think. When

:16:02.:16:04.

Scotland play and unstructured off-loading game, which we saw in

:16:05.:16:08.

the World Cup, that is when Finn Russell comes into his own. That's

:16:09.:16:13.

what we need to see tomorrow, Scotland doing what they do best.

:16:14.:16:17.

That means we can score tries and Blues the game and there is no shame

:16:18.:16:20.

because Wales is a good side but I want to see Scotland produced the

:16:21.:16:24.

rugby we know they can. What we saw last Saturday was not bad.

:16:25.:16:28.

Absolutely, we will talk more about the opening Wales and Scotland game

:16:29.:16:32.

after this match, because the teams are coming back onto the pitch,

:16:33.:16:36.

Edinburgh behind 13-3. Can they turn this around? Do they have it within

:16:37.:16:41.

them to win the game? Definitely, you know you should have scored a

:16:42.:16:46.

try in the changing room, it can be a positive... Keep doing what they

:16:47.:16:55.

are doing. 13-3, it is teetering. If they get another try and it gets to

:16:56.:16:59.

20-3 the game is over but Edinburgh must get the first score. That's

:17:00.:17:04.

where you keep the scoreboard ticking over and have the final

:17:05.:17:08.

assault on the second half of the second half. Edinburgh can win this.

:17:09.:17:11.

They have just got to have the composure when they get in behind,

:17:12.:17:14.

defensively they have to be rock-solid and not give away that

:17:15.:17:18.

easily try they did early on, or the easy possession. They can still win

:17:19.:17:21.

this but they have to play better than they did. Glasgow scored a late

:17:22.:17:27.

try to get a losing bonus point in Ulster. Scarlets against Edinburgh,

:17:28.:17:33.

13-3, John Beattie and Hugh Dan MacLennan will take you through the

:17:34.:17:35.

second half. COMMENTATOR:

:17:36.:17:37.

I don't think as far as we can see any changes to the teams at the

:17:38.:17:42.

moment. We will run through that as Greig Tonks gets Edinburgh under way

:17:43.:17:46.

again. Edinburgh now playing from right to left, Tonks, we were a bit

:17:47.:17:53.

uncertain about his fitness as he left the field at the end of the

:17:54.:17:57.

first half so we will keep an eye on him. Interestingly, the Edinburgh

:17:58.:18:00.

substitutes all warming up quite visibly -- bitterly at half-time.

:18:01.:18:07.

Both sides as they -- bitterly at half-time, both sides as they were.

:18:08.:18:11.

Neil Cochrane was lost to a head assessment. George Turner warming

:18:12.:18:19.

up. Tonks off is a backhand to the most important of the threats from

:18:20.:18:25.

Edinburgh, Tom Brown tonight. The engine room, and -- Anton Bresler

:18:26.:18:30.

and Ben Toolis, have been putting themselves about quite fashionably

:18:31.:18:33.

tonight. Burleigh has threatened occasionally. Fowles, who hit the

:18:34.:18:39.

post in the last minute, what a difference that might have made.

:18:40.:18:43.

Hamish Watson has given it the full afterburners. And blasted his way

:18:44.:18:50.

through. We need a bit more of that, I would think, because Edinburgh

:18:51.:18:55.

have regained a bit more momentum. Fowles is borrowing for it and an

:18:56.:19:01.

interference there. The referee now in a crucial position. Andrew Brace

:19:02.:19:06.

have settled for the penalty, and that must be a straightforward shot

:19:07.:19:13.

at goal, at this stage in the game. Hamish Watson is having a great

:19:14.:19:17.

game, carrying the ball, sending players away, and Nathan Fowles

:19:18.:19:23.

well, you can't the ball out of a player's hands, a nice little

:19:24.:19:27.

backflip there from Tonks, a lot more players doing that and Brown

:19:28.:19:31.

looking good but Hamish Watson, he carries the wall, -- every time he

:19:32.:19:36.

carries the ball he gets the second tackle and these are key moments.

:19:37.:19:41.

You can get this up to 13-6 and I think Edinburgh started off really

:19:42.:19:44.

spritely. They have carried the ball quickly into contact, got the ball

:19:45.:19:49.

back quickly. I think he is having a good game. I think Fowles has been

:19:50.:19:54.

at almost every breakdown, fed the ball back well. He's going to finish

:19:55.:19:58.

the job now, one hope. A fairly straightforward kick.

:19:59.:20:03.

Takes as much time as he needed and he was allowed because that has

:20:04.:20:12.

caused a few questions to Scarlets in the opening minutes of the second

:20:13.:20:15.

half. The penalty has taken Edinburgh to seven points behind the

:20:16.:20:19.

Scarlets. The Scarlets lead, 13-6. So the Scarlets substitutes, fly

:20:20.:20:36.

half number 22 Alan Thomas will replace Shingler -- Aled Thomas. A

:20:37.:20:43.

fraction of uncertainty there, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence

:20:44.:20:46.

when you see the players just standing, waiting for somebody to

:20:47.:20:51.

take charge of the situation in the kick-off. Fowles hoists it. A decent

:20:52.:20:57.

chase. Who else, Mr Watson. I presume. Against -- again, slipping

:20:58.:21:06.

too many tackles, Edinburgh. This is a threat, this is a threat, a

:21:07.:21:13.

wonderful tackle by Fowles. A bit high, but did the business, it

:21:14.:21:16.

stopped and that has taken the momentum away that was within

:21:17.:21:20.

inches, within a pace or two of having got Scarlets back and ahead

:21:21.:21:28.

in the game. Yes, he's complaining Edinburgh, it started with Morgan

:21:29.:21:32.

Allen's break camp this break by Williams, Rhodri Williams right

:21:33.:21:35.

through, tackled by his opposite man. Watch this, he runs through

:21:36.:21:39.

between two people, keeps the ball in hand. He's a live wire. We've got

:21:40.:21:45.

a couple of injuries, which gives you a chance to give you the final

:21:46.:21:50.

score from the Kingspan in Ulster, Ulster 13, Glasgow ten. A late try

:21:51.:21:58.

therefore Glasgow has won them a bonus point, when they were ahead

:21:59.:22:06.

for such a while, but it looks like 32, it is 52 Leinster and nil to a

:22:07.:22:13.

Zebre. Not a bad effort from Glasgow. Pretty good, people forget

:22:14.:22:17.

Glasgow have games in hand. A difficult start, they have lost so

:22:18.:22:21.

many players to the World Cup squad. I think the beauty of tonight's game

:22:22.:22:25.

is aside from him, Williams playing well, we are seeing the next

:22:26.:22:29.

generation of Scottish players. Sutherland, the loosehead was

:22:30.:22:33.

injured, this lad has something, for a young man he doesn't want to be

:22:34.:22:45.

covering, he is off forest edge. -- he is off, for a stitch. We have

:22:46.:22:53.

Allan Dell coming on, number 17. He will get some stitching on Rory

:22:54.:22:59.

Sutherland's die. Not too happy, going off because there is a

:23:00.:23:02.

suggestion Edinburgh were beginning to turn the tide there. We will

:23:03.:23:05.

presume this is a blood replacement at the moment. I think Edinburgh

:23:06.:23:11.

need to contain the number eight Morgan Allen. He started off the

:23:12.:23:18.

last incursion, with a really powerful tackle, powerful break.

:23:19.:23:23.

He's the guy who has done Edinburgh most damage apart from Steven

:23:24.:23:28.

Shingler, who went off with the unfortunate, we were assuming, but

:23:29.:23:31.

it looked as if he had turned his ankle in a similar way to Dan Biggar

:23:32.:23:37.

in the previous week, so below is on the bench Rory Sutherland is being

:23:38.:23:42.

patched up. It doesn't look YKC Ring a century. It's one of these -- it

:23:43.:23:49.

doesn't look like a serious injury. It's a spurting cut, just above the

:23:50.:23:53.

eyebrow. Edinburgh need a good scrum, they need to exit this

:23:54.:23:57.

territory and the scrum has been one of their strongest suits tonight.

:23:58.:24:02.

It's not that lightly. That is not what they needed. It's definitely

:24:03.:24:07.

not what Edinburgh needed. They would have targeted Allan Dell

:24:08.:24:19.

there, John. It wasn't Dell. Scrum is usually go backwards when the

:24:20.:24:23.

tight head goes backwards. So Andress, far side, they are claiming

:24:24.:24:27.

here, they claim, Andress went down on his knees, Shingler pointed and

:24:28.:24:32.

that will have been a call from the assistant referee was given the

:24:33.:24:38.

call. Again, it's like a cabbage patch away over on the far side

:24:39.:24:46.

there. The end result is another penalty to the Scarlets. They have

:24:47.:24:51.

taken it back beyond the 22 metre line. The chance now for Aled

:24:52.:25:00.

Thomas. He has given it a good kick, that's

:25:01.:25:12.

more than enough there, more than enough to restore the three points

:25:13.:25:17.

back to a 13 point advantage. For the Scarlets. Comfortably taken

:25:18.:25:26.

penalty by man who slots in, no more than we would expect, so we have

:25:27.:25:30.

Scarlets 16, Edinburgh six, John. Edinburgh can't afford to let the

:25:31.:25:36.

Scarlets become dominant. Having dominated the scrums, then to give

:25:37.:25:39.

away a penalty at scrum time is incongruous. Du Preez, Burleigh, who

:25:40.:25:53.

said as he chased Du Preez, under it. A case could be made that he was

:25:54.:26:00.

blocked there. Again, the Scarlets exit strategy is good although the

:26:01.:26:06.

kicking is not as good. The uncertainty under the high ball, the

:26:07.:26:13.

wind tossing it. Just a lack of strategy here from Edinburgh,

:26:14.:26:16.

because it is kick and chase, kick and hope. This might run, but

:26:17.:26:22.

Burleigh has decided he will just deal with it. Sticking with some

:26:23.:26:29.

length and some accuracy this time. -- kicking. Making sure he made good

:26:30.:26:35.

ground and calling a halt to the ping pong. A bit of aerial ping

:26:36.:26:40.

pong. Sutherland coming back on. The difference between the two teams has

:26:41.:26:46.

been a couple of missed tackles. First of all gave Scarlets the first

:26:47.:26:51.

try, a missed tackle, a good threaded pass and then Williams

:26:52.:26:56.

through between two tackles, nearly got them the chance with the

:26:57.:27:02.

penalty. Edinburgh's defence, which is normally first-class, tonight,

:27:03.:27:05.

you can coach all you like and two players missed tackles. These are

:27:06.:27:11.

the fine margins which decides games. Rhodri Williams tanks it

:27:12.:27:18.

again, keeping it in play quite deliberately, Tonks. Edinburgh have

:27:19.:27:22.

clearly decided to take the aerial route for a while. It was a good

:27:23.:27:28.

chase because they have territory, but Scarlets again weaving their way

:27:29.:27:36.

through. Slipshod defending. Look at that. Even Hamish Watson couldn't

:27:37.:27:39.

cope with that, but he is back in there. Goodness me, he gives it

:27:40.:27:47.

everything. Here they come. They have men out on the right this time.

:27:48.:27:53.

Haven't seen too much of Gareth Owen. He has moved from centre in

:27:54.:28:02.

his last outing, too right wing. -- to the right wing. A better

:28:03.:28:06.

challenge from Edinburgh. A quick rush in the defence. Scarlets

:28:07.:28:12.

stretching them left and right, left and right and this time it is left.

:28:13.:28:19.

It has broken down at Van der Merwe, a high tackle. By which time the

:28:20.:28:24.

whistle had gone. It's just a bit broken, but this could actually suit

:28:25.:28:29.

anyone of a number of speed merchants who could pick up the ball

:28:30.:28:33.

and just take off. Could do. The player that has impressed me is the

:28:34.:28:37.

Scarlets number two, who is down injured, Kirby Myhill. Regan King,

:28:38.:28:42.

we know he is class, but the hooker, that's a knock-on by Van der Merwe

:28:43.:28:47.

but time I will get fit he doesn't look like a modern-day hawker, a

:28:48.:28:53.

squat five up to six foot two inches, he is playing. He doesn't

:28:54.:28:59.

look like a hooker, running well, and he has something in Regan King.

:29:00.:29:04.

There is Myhill, he doesn't have a modern look,... Fantastic nobility,

:29:05.:29:12.

not many people will give Hamish Watson ambush like that and get away

:29:13.:29:18.

with it. Hamish didn't get back on his feet very quickly and deal with

:29:19.:29:23.

it, in his own way -- he did get back on his feet very quickly. A

:29:24.:29:26.

finely balanced game, it's been a good game. An open game, dry ground,

:29:27.:29:32.

dry ball, pitch gives a bit, the scrums have been fascinating. The

:29:33.:29:35.

line-outs have been few and far between because they have mostly

:29:36.:29:39.

kicked for territory and both back divisions are attacking, so you have

:29:40.:29:45.

a real matter of both teams trying to play the same type of game. They

:29:46.:29:48.

are desperate for the points because they know there is going to be no

:29:49.:29:54.

margin of error now. You see what Leinster have done, Leinster and

:29:55.:29:57.

Munster ominously have games in hand, as do Glasgow to a degree but

:29:58.:30:01.

here, Edinburgh have it. A good break up the medal on the shoulder,

:30:02.:30:06.

the short pass. Moving it through and the Edinburgh subs beginning to

:30:07.:30:10.

warm up, at pace pillow was here. This is a good break on the far

:30:11.:30:16.

side, cutting inside. -- at pace here. He was tripped possibly, there

:30:17.:30:22.

was half a claim. That could be very interesting, the referee is not

:30:23.:30:25.

getting any guidance from the touchline and he is happy to let

:30:26.:30:29.

that go. That would be interesting, to see that a game, if we could,

:30:30.:30:34.

whether Hoyland was taken down or partially taken down. There was a

:30:35.:30:39.

clear attempt to obstruct him, to hold his progress. It came from an

:30:40.:30:43.

amazing off-load almost on the own 22 as they ran out from defence and

:30:44.:30:47.

then Hoyland was through, whether he was tripped I didn't see. I doubt it

:30:48.:30:52.

otherwise there would have been more of a noise. Hoyland still thinking

:30:53.:30:56.

of what he nearly did, but meanwhile Scarlets, look at the way the ball

:30:57.:31:01.

is playing off the ground. It's extraordinary how hard it is under

:31:02.:31:05.

the surface and that is clearly kept in play by the Number ten.

:31:06.:31:12.

He stayed back in Tonks position. He left it very late. One or two of the

:31:13.:31:25.

Scarlets, Van Der Merwe on the side, hands on his knees, he does not look

:31:26.:31:30.

too great. Here we have the first of the Edinburgh substitutions. Dougie

:31:31.:31:35.

Fife, and I think John Kennedy, are going to come on together. It would

:31:36.:31:41.

appear that way to me. Dougie Fife is the first player. He's come on,

:31:42.:31:49.

and Sean Kennedy, replacing fouls at scrum-half. A straight swap. Hoyland

:31:50.:31:57.

has been replaced by Dougie Fife -- replacing fouls at scrum-half.

:31:58.:32:06.

Plenty of experience for both. A different type of play-off for Sean

:32:07.:32:11.

Kennedy. Here, the Scarlets are coming, it is a bit slack, behind

:32:12.:32:16.

Van Der Merwe, a good chase by Edinburgh. They have it, I think.

:32:17.:32:21.

But the Scarlets have the numbers, and Williams decides that he will

:32:22.:32:26.

send it along. A chance for Edinburgh to clear the line. That

:32:27.:32:31.

has been successful. A bit of experience coming into play. The

:32:32.:32:38.

ruck that we just saw was a chance for Edinburgh to win the ball back,

:32:39.:32:42.

they did not all fire in, the Scarlets came back and they got the

:32:43.:32:50.

ball back. To list is playing well, they are getting the ball. --

:32:51.:33:00.

Toolis. They cannot break the defensive line the way that the

:33:01.:33:04.

scholars have done. -- the Scarlets. Rhodri Jones... The

:33:05.:33:21.

number 18. When they go on a rumble, Edinburgh are finding it difficult

:33:22.:33:25.

to hold momentum when they get the ball and they steam-rolled through.

:33:26.:33:34.

Hamish Watson is going to get an ear wiggling, he said something there,

:33:35.:33:39.

clearly. He puts on self there, he's got to get out, if he does that

:33:40.:33:46.

again, he's leaving the field. That was pretty blunt. I don't know what

:33:47.:33:52.

he said. Excuse me, that was a bad decision? Maybe not! Anyway, a

:33:53.:33:56.

penalty to the Scarlets, that could be costly. These are the moments

:33:57.:34:05.

that offer an opportunity to 18 to put clear water between them and the

:34:06.:34:08.

other team, at the moment, this scoreline is not a done deal -- a

:34:09.:34:15.

team. This is when the coaches would get furious. He tries to drag him to

:34:16.:34:22.

the side. He is held there... The damage was done, and what he said

:34:23.:34:27.

afterwards... I think so. He'd already given away the penalty.

:34:28.:34:33.

Those extra ten metres. Playing into Aled Thomas's hands. Or more

:34:34.:34:41.

precisely, his right boot. That's 80% plus. He delivers, for sure.

:34:42.:34:53.

He's taken Scarlets further ahead, 19-6. The game is slipping away from

:34:54.:34:58.

Edinburgh. It is self-inflicted. That was a penalty given away. Then

:34:59.:35:04.

to talk back to the referee. Scrum dominance is not what it was, in the

:35:05.:35:09.

last scrum, they gave away a penalty. The Scarlets have upped the

:35:10.:35:14.

tempo. Edinburgh have taken a step back, I think, it is fair to say.

:35:15.:35:20.

But they aren't out of it. Tonks, this is another good break. Tom

:35:21.:35:27.

Brown. He has had a storm. He's been a lecturer, breaking the line most

:35:28.:35:35.

times. -- he's been electric. He's hit the pace on the dial that

:35:36.:35:40.

Edinburgh needed. Bernie Mac delivers to du Preez.

:35:41.:35:46.

A suggestion of crossing in the middle. A bit of a bust up... Still

:35:47.:36:11.

going on. Meanwhile, play is raging below us here. The afters are

:36:12.:36:15.

finished but there is an injury. Hamish Watson? One of his own

:36:16.:36:22.

players came in to ruck someone. I think he got caught. That was my

:36:23.:36:27.

reading of it. He's had a great game apart from that penalty. I think the

:36:28.:36:33.

Edinburgh backs had been playing well as well. They've been cutting,

:36:34.:36:36.

sometimes getting through. Another change coming for the Edinburgh

:36:37.:36:42.

side. Jamie Ritchie. One of the under 20 players. This could be very

:36:43.:36:48.

interesting. Let's see what happens here, when we sought Watson out on

:36:49.:36:55.

the far side. I think it will be for Watson, he gave away the penalty. It

:36:56.:37:01.

is taking a long time. Here he is in possession. Then, that happened and

:37:02.:37:05.

he did not look too happy. It may have been the previous ruck. I think

:37:06.:37:10.

it was Rory Sullivan who knotted him in the back of the head by accident.

:37:11.:37:17.

The joys of being a professional rugby player! It's that feeling, the

:37:18.:37:21.

worst feeling in the world as the Sunday morning, but for him it will

:37:22.:37:26.

be Friday morning! He's had a bang on the head and the nose. No matter

:37:27.:37:33.

how hard you train, it takes its toll. There is nothing like playing.

:37:34.:37:38.

Even the pros tell you, they train and train, someone wax them in the

:37:39.:37:43.

game, and all of the air goes out of your lungs and the energy goes. You

:37:44.:37:48.

watch these guys, he's played really well. -- somebody hits you in the

:37:49.:37:55.

game. He is 18 or 19 stone, they whack into each other, and run on.

:37:56.:38:03.

Let's go to Andy Nichol for a view on where we are. 25 minutes to go.

:38:04.:38:09.

19-6, the scoreboard does not look good at the moment. Coman, the

:38:10.:38:14.

captain, has to get the team together and have communication to

:38:15.:38:18.

say that the belief is still there to win it. What they will do next,

:38:19.:38:22.

and what they have to do. I've been watching them, they go to ones and

:38:23.:38:27.

twos, if you look at the scoreboard, they have to get everyone together

:38:28.:38:30.

and say this is what we will do, and how we will win the game. Look

:38:31.:38:34.

everyone in the iron and nature or everyone knows exactly what is

:38:35.:38:37.

expected. I would like to have seen more leadership in those five

:38:38.:38:43.

minutes. We are going to see some changes. It looks like the other

:38:44.:38:52.

Toolis boy is coming in as well. This game can still be won, but they

:38:53.:38:56.

have two upped their game, and play error-free and disciplined. -- they

:38:57.:39:07.

have to up their game. The captain is coming off, Mike Coman. What Andy

:39:08.:39:13.

was saying was a good description of someone like Keller, who would have

:39:14.:39:20.

commanded that situation. The Toolis twins are back on. The Scarlets are

:39:21.:39:26.

benefiting from some ricochets. Watson is away. We have Jamie

:39:27.:39:29.

Ritchie at number 20 who has come on in his place. Burleigh, we

:39:30.:39:37.

understand, has taken the captain's responsibilities. Tonks... Dougie

:39:38.:39:48.

Fife was looking for some action. Du Preez, appearing on the right-hand

:39:49.:39:53.

side quite a lot now. Rory Sutherland has covered every tune of

:39:54.:39:58.

the sand, that is part of the Scarlets. In some patches, better

:39:59.:40:05.

possession and movement of the ball, a cutting run again by Sam Beard who

:40:06.:40:12.

has looked very sharp tonight. Burleigh, treading water Tonks

:40:13.:40:19.

delivers a better pass. Mike Allen cuts through. Here is a chance for

:40:20.:40:23.

Edinburgh! Raking through, it's a good tackle. -- breaking. Edinburgh

:40:24.:40:31.

are rumbling towards the line to the left. Within the 22 metres. Here

:40:32.:40:36.

they come, stretching into the left and up the middle three Mike Allen

:40:37.:40:43.

again. Sean Kennedy to Sam Beard. Tops was too far away. He takes it

:40:44.:40:52.

on himself. -- Tonks. The ball is loose. We have two metres to go...

:40:53.:40:59.

The Scarlets have pinched it. Within metres of their own line. This is

:41:00.:41:06.

great play from Edinburgh. Turner... What a bit of speed it was from the

:41:07.:41:14.

hooker. He comes on. Those two centres, Beard and Allen are making

:41:15.:41:18.

inroads through the midfield. You have the young boys on, a bunch of

:41:19.:41:21.

young boys. They've taken the captain off because he has signed

:41:22.:41:29.

for someone else. Playing with London Irish, wherever he has gone,

:41:30.:41:35.

get him off the pitch. You have a couple in the middle, Toolis in the

:41:36.:41:44.

middle, Toolis on the back. Richie is on as well, it is the next

:41:45.:41:48.

generation. It is good. The two wingers have been impressive, Tom

:41:49.:41:54.

Brown has had an incisive game. Dougie Fife is contributing now.

:41:55.:41:59.

He's come on. The icing on the cake would be to give Kinghorn a run. A

:42:00.:42:07.

lot of openings and spaces are appearing. Young Adam Hastings, as

:42:08.:42:14.

well, Gavin's boy is playing for a part. Edinburgh have it! Rock and

:42:15.:42:27.

roll towards the line... Du Preez off-loads two metres. Piling in,

:42:28.:42:32.

Sean Kennedy is held. That is a penalty. A penalty is coming.

:42:33.:42:38.

Kennedy goes in. Pre-'s Mac is in. A try is given. -- Dupre

:42:39.:42:50.

the ball was delivered straight to du Preez. The Scarlets were

:42:51.:43:00.

cheating, they had been offside, du Preez goes through, and that was a

:43:01.:43:04.

great try. Do you know what is clever about that? He went between

:43:05.:43:09.

two players. He had to encourage those players to tackle, look how

:43:10.:43:13.

low he goes, and how powerful he is. It is very clever. I'm sure even

:43:14.:43:19.

Andy Nichol would have been impressed with that pass, it was the

:43:20.:43:23.

perfect height for him to take it on at that level, and it was good

:43:24.:43:27.

refereeing that allows the play to continue. Let's ask Andy Nichol what

:43:28.:43:31.

he thinks? Good play from Edinburgh, a good finish from du Preez, Sean

:43:32.:43:38.

Kennedy passed it, this kit is important. That is good play,

:43:39.:43:43.

they've got back in the game -- a good kick that is important. We said

:43:44.:43:50.

it earlier that this can easily be one. -- won. At the moment, the

:43:51.:44:00.

future looks bright for Edinburgh. They have two converts to win today

:44:01.:44:07.

in this tight game. This could be huge for Edinburgh if they turn it

:44:08.:44:14.

around, Tonks was one fitter drift as we settle in behind him again. --

:44:15.:44:17.

one foot adrift. As we approach the hour, 20 minutes

:44:18.:44:37.

left, there is a lot of rugby left. The number seven for the Scarlets

:44:38.:44:44.

has gone. The game is the taking. It is a stunning match. The key thing

:44:45.:44:51.

about the kick was 19-11 would have been 19-13, a score in a conversion

:44:52.:44:57.

game. They have had the territorial, I think they've had a glimmer of the

:44:58.:45:09.

way to play the game. Here come the Scarlets. Something of a tackle

:45:10.:45:17.

there from Jamie Ritchie, his head was in the right place. Scarlets go

:45:18.:45:22.

out to the left again come using the full width, the Scarlets here.

:45:23.:45:34.

Edinburgh have a good chase. Good tackling, holding the Scarlets at

:45:35.:45:38.

midfield. Tempting them to make a mistake and try some thing

:45:39.:45:45.

ambitious. A good tackle again. Below, we can see the number 17 for

:45:46.:45:49.

Edinburgh. That was loose a turnover. Du Preez has taken it,

:45:50.:45:57.

Edinburgh have won it. They are beginning to play with some

:45:58.:46:05.

certainty now. Burleigh goes for territory. That is a beauty, if it

:46:06.:46:10.

runs... And it does. The Scarlets had no option but to let it run. It

:46:11.:46:15.

was bobbling around like a cork at sea. Number 17 Allendale comes on,

:46:16.:46:28.

Simon Bergen comes on at 18. The front row will empty. They've given

:46:29.:46:31.

it a decent shift, the front row. The whole team has. They all deserve

:46:32.:46:38.

something from this. That was great defence. I watched the defensive

:46:39.:46:44.

line of the Scarlets attack, James Ritchie gave a couple of good

:46:45.:46:47.

tackles, getting the young boys involved. They are attacking. 18 and

:46:48.:46:57.

17 are on. Allan Dell and Simon Bergen for Edinburgh.

:46:58.:47:10.

It's a chance for Edinburgh to run at pace. It is a good break. Dougie

:47:11.:47:18.

Fife this time, the senior player stepping up to help. They are

:47:19.:47:27.

beginning to pay their debts, the forwards have given them a decent

:47:28.:47:30.

chance of retrieving the game. They have nothing at the moment. They

:47:31.:47:37.

don't even have a bonus. The Scarlets pinch it, but they are

:47:38.:47:44.

penalised. Penalised at midfield. A couple of things, the Scarlets have

:47:45.:47:48.

lazy runners sometimes, the man of the match, Morgan Allen, taking

:47:49.:47:55.

someone off the ball. Edinburgh doing the attacking, this is

:47:56.:47:59.

encouraging. Having a think. I think he will put it in the corner. A

:48:00.:48:07.

little far out. As we go for the corner. Let's see if all of these

:48:08.:48:10.

hours of practice payoff. A line-out, five metres out. It wasn't

:48:11.:48:22.

me, referee! I'm very sorry, I'm so sorry I'm putting my hand up. I'm

:48:23.:48:27.

not sure what the Welsh 's, but I will look it up. This is a good

:48:28.:48:36.

chance for Ember. -- a good chance for Edinburgh. It needs delivery

:48:37.:48:47.

now... It needs cohesion, effort patients, and they have to tempt the

:48:48.:48:54.

Scarlets to bring them down. They need it recycled quickly. John

:48:55.:48:55.

Kennedy has it. Van Der exactly what we were saying. They

:48:56.:49:11.

needed patience, and they got neither. That pass was too hard. He

:49:12.:49:18.

was either thinking the player beyond... That is a hard pass, if it

:49:19.:49:26.

is him, it should be gently. You can tell from the reaction, when he gets

:49:27.:49:30.

up, keep your ion him. It is too hard. -- keep your ion him.

:49:31.:49:43.

It is an 8-point game at this stage. That is what they are looking at,

:49:44.:49:58.

the reverse angle. To be fair, Simon Berghan was coming close to the

:49:59.:50:04.

ruck, think about the Warriors, they are closer. Especially the

:50:05.:50:08.

opposition 22, the nine can take two or three defenders out with that

:50:09.:50:11.

pass, but that was a fine right hand. All of these new front row

:50:12.:50:20.

players that the referee is trying to convince, he has shifted them a

:50:21.:50:26.

little bit. That is more useful to Edinburgh, I think. Slightly off

:50:27.:50:31.

centre. On the left-hand side as the Edinburgh side attack. Tom Brown is

:50:32.:50:38.

lying deep... Tonks is halfway. But they don't have the ball. That is

:50:39.:50:43.

the problem, why they are lying back. A penalty to Edinburgh!

:50:44.:50:54.

Well... Underneath the post, Burleigh is indicating he wants a

:50:55.:50:59.

kick taken. Andy...? This is interesting, are they coming off?

:51:00.:51:04.

This is the right call to take the three points, Phil Burleigh has made

:51:05.:51:12.

the right call to getting, they should be looking at bonus point,

:51:13.:51:16.

this is for winning, the referee is looking at the Scarlets in the

:51:17.:51:23.

scrum. Edinburgh began strong, the Scarlets got the upper hand. They

:51:24.:51:28.

could come back with a score, and definitely win the game. You would

:51:29.:51:33.

not want to tempt fate, offered the left foot.

:51:34.:51:38.

-- off of the left foot. To go back to why that penalty was awarded, the

:51:39.:51:52.

pitch is not up to it. I'm looking left and I can see a small cabbage

:51:53.:51:58.

field where it has been churned up. 14 minutes left? Edinburgh could win

:51:59.:52:03.

it, a 5-point game, one score converted, and you win the match.

:52:04.:52:07.

You have to believe that you can do this. Burleigh gives it an almighty

:52:08.:52:16.

whack. But, it is enough to go over the line. I think the Scarlets were

:52:17.:52:22.

hoping that he is outside but he's nowhere near as I do the line. --

:52:23.:52:28.

here is nowhere near outside of the line.

:52:29.:52:31.

I think both centres have played exceptionally well tonight. Brown

:52:32.:52:39.

has played well. Nobody has played badly, especially away from home.

:52:40.:52:43.

This is a good performance. Up they come, the Scarlets take it in. They

:52:44.:52:48.

know that they need those points. They need that when, this league is

:52:49.:52:55.

so tight. A thundering tackle from Edinburgh. Trying to dislodge the

:52:56.:53:02.

ball on the ground, Van Der Merwe emerges from the pile. Edinburgh

:53:03.:53:07.

have two be careful, there is a crossing almost there, the dummy

:53:08.:53:13.

runner left to go. The referee is taking something from the touchline.

:53:14.:53:23.

The Scarlets go left, Edinburgh keep them in their own half. A decent

:53:24.:53:31.

start, this one is over the top. Tonks has to be careful, it has

:53:32.:53:36.

fallen nicely for him off of his left foot. A nice touch from Van Der

:53:37.:53:43.

Merwe, he takes a look. Up it goes. Now, who is brave enough? The wind

:53:44.:53:51.

catches up, du Preez takes it to Burleigh. A huge gap here? It is run

:53:52.:54:00.

too far. Has it gone the whole way? Not quite, there was a good chase.

:54:01.:54:05.

It goes over the dead-ball line. Alan Thomas cleverly placed his

:54:06.:54:12.

feet... That is the ball effectively over the line, it will be a scrum

:54:13.:54:17.

from where it is kicked, here on the ten metre line. They had to take 60

:54:18.:54:22.

metres. The referee hasn't spotted it, he's in the wrong place. That

:54:23.:54:30.

was the right decision, a brilliant kick from that swirling highball to

:54:31.:54:38.

Burleigh. It had to go to a corner. Dougie Fife had a good foot rest

:54:39.:54:41.

here, sometimes the ball keeps rolling. The Scarlets marshalled the

:54:42.:54:49.

ball well. Instead of being right deep in the Scarlets half, they have

:54:50.:54:54.

a scrum again, they had to defend. I've been impressed by the Edinburgh

:54:55.:54:58.

defence in the last five minutes, they are AG and there's a real

:54:59.:55:08.

belief they can do this. -- edgy. They have to get their hands on it

:55:09.:55:12.

again though. The referee is going to have words, I think. Again, you

:55:13.:55:23.

can see that he is moving them, so he's picked it up on the pitch? It

:55:24.:55:29.

is unfair on the referee to make the call, we don't know, they don't

:55:30.:55:32.

know, you can guess as to what has happened. Nobody actually knows

:55:33.:55:38.

unless someone is taking it down on purpose. I think Andy is spot on

:55:39.:55:44.

with defence, the Edinburgh defence has become more abrasive in this

:55:45.:55:47.

half. They need more of the ball attack. A penalty...? No. Just for a

:55:48.:55:56.

second, I thought he would reach for a card. But it seems he is going to

:55:57.:56:06.

have a word. The next time he collapses the scrum, he's going.

:56:07.:56:11.

Have a word. He's fingered Rhodri Jones, next time he does that, he is

:56:12.:56:18.

off. That could be interesting. We are arriving down the clock, here is

:56:19.:56:24.

our man Kinghorn warming up... As Tonks fires into the left. Are they

:56:25.:56:32.

going to take him off? There is someone limping, coming over, here

:56:33.:56:39.

is Mike Allen. Just looking at this collapse in the scrum. It changes

:56:40.:56:43.

made. Kinghorn has come for Edinburgh. For people who don't know

:56:44.:56:52.

who this lad is, we've watched him a few times, he has real gas. Let's

:56:53.:57:01.

have a word with Andy...? I can see that Kinghorn is going to the right

:57:02.:57:07.

wing, Dougie Fife is outside centre. A bit of a change around... Let's

:57:08.:57:15.

see how they cope with it. Not commanding the line-out. There is

:57:16.:57:22.

danger for the Scarlets under their own post. That was not a brave move.

:57:23.:57:32.

They have recycled it. They managed to get it down from the charge down.

:57:33.:57:42.

They tried it. Edinburgh are trying to keep it there. Down to 8.5

:57:43.:57:50.

minutes. Edinburgh on the chase. Again, they are charging down!

:57:51.:57:55.

Inches away from getting it over the line. They have the throw in. Van

:57:56.:58:02.

Der Merwe was eventually pressed into action. A disastrous period of

:58:03.:58:08.

play here for the Scarlets. A fantastic charge from Toolis, they

:58:09.:58:14.

going kicking and chasing. Van Der Merwe. Another charge. You can see

:58:15.:58:18.

how hungry the younger players are, but I think Van Der Merwe on

:58:19.:58:24.

sportingly threw the ball away. This is a big moment. -- unsportingly.

:58:25.:58:33.

The Scarlets were doing their best to get it away. Here they go, piling

:58:34.:58:40.

in. Here they come, it is another charge. A good leg. A wonderful

:58:41.:58:47.

charge from Hunter. Kennedy wants it on the left. Here they come... Held

:58:48.:58:53.

up again. They have men on the left and the right. Hunter takes it on.

:58:54.:59:02.

Hunter... Kennedy. A whiff of a gap. The Scarlets defending with all they

:59:03.:59:09.

can. Kennedy is pointing. Five metres and less, here they come

:59:10.:59:13.

again... The Scarlets are in a mad rush to get out. Stretching, Tom

:59:14.:59:23.

Brown is out on the left. Kennedy is going back to the right. Up they go!

:59:24.:59:31.

Half a step, five metres again. Kennedy is borrowing for the ball.

:59:32.:59:36.

Edinburgh are over! WHISTLE Edinburgh have broken the line, and

:59:37.:59:43.

turned the game. It is number 19, Alex to less, he has finally plunged

:59:44.:59:51.

over the line. -- Alex Toolis. It is now a level game, 19-19. Fantastic

:59:52.:59:56.

player! Watch this last pass. Kennedy looks right, he picks up du

:59:57.:00:08.

Preez, wonderful. Straight out of the book of slightly dodgy passes

:00:09.:00:12.

but it is fantastic. Slightly dodgy, uncoached but brilliant. We talked

:00:13.:00:19.

about when he scored the try, he attracted two defenders, going

:00:20.:00:22.

between two men, he passed the ball high over, this is deserved. I think

:00:23.:00:31.

the young boys, Turner, he's played well, and Kinghorn, Ritchie, a whole

:00:32.:00:34.

bunch of young Scottish boys. They are doing well. You want a left foot

:00:35.:00:43.

player out there. Tonks, we thought he would not see out the game with a

:00:44.:00:46.

chance to get Edinburgh ahead. He has given a terrific... Yes! Yes!

:00:47.:00:58.

Well, he took a long time. It was the second flag that went up,

:00:59.:01:02.

because the first one stayed firmly rooted, and it was the second flag

:01:03.:01:06.

that has run away, Edinburgh take the lead! Well, that is the width,

:01:07.:01:15.

the thickness of a Kamil Glik. You are supposed to be impartial! -- the

:01:16.:01:24.

thickness of a canopy. One Edinburgh Edinburgh lead by 21-19. Hang on in

:01:25.:01:30.

for five minutes, keep doing what they have been doing and win this

:01:31.:01:35.

match. Andy Nicol, give us a break. They have a leading position, it's a

:01:36.:01:38.

different dynamic, they are leading, they have to see the game out but

:01:39.:01:42.

they have to keep playing. What we have seen in the last ten minutes is

:01:43.:01:48.

playing at their best, they cannot just think about closing this game

:01:49.:01:51.

out, keep playing, keep exerting this pressure, which they have done

:01:52.:01:55.

so well, and they can win this game, definitely. Well, I can tell you our

:01:56.:02:01.

radio colleagues to our rights were on their feet there are! In their

:02:02.:02:06.

own impartial way. Here they come, Scarlets apace, they have it, roll

:02:07.:02:10.

the dice one more time. We still have four minutes to play. It needs

:02:11.:02:17.

cool heads, it needs bravery. They have a penalty, a penalty coming. A

:02:18.:02:23.

penalty coming. Scarlets have a penalty. 16 White, George Turner.

:02:24.:02:30.

Out is a call from the assistant referee, I can see him talking.

:02:31.:02:36.

That's a cheap penalty to give away. Well, it's called, no surprise there

:02:37.:02:41.

because anybody would do the same thing in the circumstances. It's

:02:42.:02:46.

exactly, doesn't it happen so often, John, a team turned the game around

:02:47.:02:51.

and then gives away a penalty, or is penalised, I should say? Two

:02:52.:02:59.

praises, maybe. Neither did Ritchie, two or three Edinburgh players were

:03:00.:03:05.

not on-site. Correct call. Its discipline, isn't it? I think both

:03:06.:03:09.

Richie and he were offside. The banker, Alan Thomas, you would have

:03:10.:03:17.

to say, could give this game another twist.

:03:18.:03:27.

Thomas, absolutely smashed it, nailed it. 22-21 to the Scarlets,

:03:28.:03:39.

it's not yet done, it's never done, until it's done. You are right, all

:03:40.:03:44.

independent analysis of whether team scores, they scored just after other

:03:45.:03:48.

teams have scored, whether it's soccer or rugby, and this is a great

:03:49.:03:54.

kick, a calm kick, and now the Scarlets are in the lead. Well, I

:03:55.:03:59.

referred to him as the banker and I would put my money on him. Tonks

:04:00.:04:03.

launches it. They have two and a half minutes, or thereabouts. Morgan

:04:04.:04:09.

Allen breakthrough again. If you have a pound for every time you have

:04:10.:04:14.

to say that we would be rich because he has had a storm. They will try to

:04:15.:04:22.

kick it for two minutes, I don't think they will kick it. The referee

:04:23.:04:26.

is saying. They have to now. He's going to click it. That has given it

:04:27.:04:31.

to Edinburgh, Du Preez takes. -- he is going to kick it. Two minutes,

:04:32.:04:37.

can Edinburgh reverse the two minutes of possession? They have men

:04:38.:04:41.

to their left, they need to run this. Tonks needs to break. Good

:04:42.:04:45.

charge by number 11, Tom Brown, takes it in, Kennedy comes left

:04:46.:04:51.

again. They are giving it everything, Edinburgh. This will be

:04:52.:04:54.

a sore one, there's an Edinburgh injury wait up to the far side, they

:04:55.:05:01.

are a man down as well. That was a difficult pass, but he has made the

:05:02.:05:04.

most of it. He has retained possession, but he has been caught,

:05:05.:05:09.

Sam Beard is down but Kennedy has it. They are just about on their

:05:10.:05:13.

knees, Edinburgh, physically, but they are giving it another go. Du

:05:14.:05:18.

Preez has been magnificent. The ball is loose, Edinburgh have it. The

:05:19.:05:24.

crowd are bawling at the referee. I think it is Greg Hunter. Greg Hunter

:05:25.:05:31.

is injured up to our left. No, it's Turner. Here we go again, Du Preez

:05:32.:05:36.

has another go. He has broken through, three redshirts trailing in

:05:37.:05:39.

his wake. Edinburgh still playing with 14 men. There are gaps in the

:05:40.:05:45.

field everywhere. There are men on this left-hand side, he changed his

:05:46.:05:52.

mind, he maybe went the wrong way. End of play there. From the wrong

:05:53.:05:57.

side, but the referee allows play to continue. Edinburgh still have it.

:05:58.:06:01.

The clock runs within the final minute of play. The final minute of

:06:02.:06:04.

play and Edinburgh continue to make that moving the ball. They need to

:06:05.:06:10.

hold the ball. The injured player has joined the fray, he has come

:06:11.:06:14.

back into it. Burleigh, they have moved it out of the right,

:06:15.:06:22.

Kinghorn... Into touch. If he had one more step he may have been away,

:06:23.:06:27.

might have been. Yes, just to go back to the young boys like George

:06:28.:06:30.

Turner, who have played well tonight, he has played well and that

:06:31.:06:34.

was a last desperate attempt to win this match. Time will fade away from

:06:35.:06:38.

them but many of these young players have stepped up, could have won it

:06:39.:06:42.

but it's a 1-point game. It's the best game I've seen by a mile. Great

:06:43.:06:50.

game, scrums have been even at the line-outs have been even, the

:06:51.:06:53.

attacks have been even, a couple of outstanding displays, Morgan Allen,

:06:54.:07:01.

Kennedy, they have all played well. This will be the last play for sure

:07:02.:07:05.

because the clock is red. The referee Andrew Grace will decide

:07:06.:07:09.

that as soon as the ball goes dead and is put out of play -- Andrew

:07:10.:07:14.

Brace. If you are a Scarlet you would catch it and get it to the

:07:15.:07:18.

scrum-half and dispatch it. They will be thinking what their safest

:07:19.:07:22.

line-out throw is, which is Bob would be the front, straight up in

:07:23.:07:28.

front of Toolis. Up the middle, they have got it. All they need to do is

:07:29.:07:32.

get it back, Edinburgh doing their level best to destroy the position.

:07:33.:07:36.

Edinburgh, they have managed to get it away, they have managed to get it

:07:37.:07:41.

away, and the final play is Aled Davies sending the ball into touch.

:07:42.:07:49.

And really, they are on their feet, they are on their feet all around us

:07:50.:07:52.

here in Parc y Scarlets because they know they have had to work really

:07:53.:07:56.

hard to get the points for this, and at the end of the day Edinburgh have

:07:57.:08:01.

got to settle for a bonus point. It came so close. A game that was when

:08:02.:08:06.

the ball, they did well, they did really well, but -- winnable. They

:08:07.:08:13.

will view it as a game they let slip through their fingers, a bit like

:08:14.:08:16.

the sand on the pitch, it slipped through their fingers and the

:08:17.:08:19.

Scarlets will be delighted. You can see they're happy faces. They know

:08:20.:08:23.

each other of these guys, they play each other but ultimately a cracking

:08:24.:08:28.

game. Edinburgh will regret the fact they didn't win this because they

:08:29.:08:32.

could have. They came so close in West Wales, because it has finished

:08:33.:08:36.

in Parc y Scarlets, a 1-point win for the home team, Scarlets 22,

:08:37.:08:43.

Edinburgh a very brave 21. Smiles on the face of the Scarlets

:08:44.:08:48.

players but perhaps the relief going away with the wind against

:08:49.:08:51.

Edinburgh, great performance towards the end of the second half. Like the

:08:52.:08:56.

first half, Edinburgh came back into the game, in the second half they

:08:57.:08:59.

came into the game and started converting points. Andy Nicol, quite

:09:00.:09:05.

an extraordinary game of rugby. 19-6, for a long time, Edinburgh

:09:06.:09:09.

looked dead and buried. They showed a lot of character to get their

:09:10.:09:12.

noses in front but they didn't keep it in front for any length of time.

:09:13.:09:21.

As soon as they got believed there was a penalty from Scarlets which

:09:22.:09:24.

was a shame. It would be nice to see how Scarlets would have reacted to

:09:25.:09:28.

going behind. They had the game won I think they would have thought, but

:09:29.:09:30.

I was really impressed with Edinburgh, where they made the

:09:31.:09:33.

changes it seemed to bring a bit of energy into the pack, into the whole

:09:34.:09:36.

team in fact and they had an edge about them, the defence was

:09:37.:09:39.

outstanding, the intensity was brilliant. Alan Solomons will take a

:09:40.:09:43.

huge amount from that defeat tonight. But it so could have been a

:09:44.:09:48.

victory. Some big performances, we mentioned Hamish Watson at the start

:09:49.:09:52.

of the programme. He put in a power of work, he gave away a penalty

:09:53.:09:56.

before going off with what looked like an injury but he worked

:09:57.:10:00.

incredibly hard. Ben Jones, another one. Du Preez, great influence, he

:10:01.:10:07.

did a lot for the second try. It wasn't a bad performance out there

:10:08.:10:11.

from Edinburgh tonight, they just had a few bad patches. They made a

:10:12.:10:15.

slow start, they didn't start the game well, and at times they showed

:10:16.:10:19.

ill discipline. I thought going out of the game ten minutes into the

:10:20.:10:24.

second half, but they regrouped and really took it to them. A win like

:10:25.:10:32.

that, and ability to get that win, that will give them so much

:10:33.:10:36.

confidence because of where they were in the game. They still should

:10:37.:10:39.

take an awful lot from it because they showed a lot of character. In

:10:40.:10:43.

Ulster, another game Edinburgh potentially should have won but that

:10:44.:10:47.

is disappointing because it's a game that should have been won and the

:10:48.:10:51.

Kingspan, a game that could have been won SOCA frustration, this team

:10:52.:10:55.

have the ability but they are not killing off games. -- SOCA

:10:56.:11:01.

frustration. I'm not glorifying it but a lot of young players who are

:11:02.:11:05.

put into this situation and they have found a way to get back, 19-6

:11:06.:11:13.

down you think dead and buried, that is where they will take the

:11:14.:11:15.

positives from. They have a bonus point away from home, which is good.

:11:16.:11:19.

It was an opportunity. If Edinburgh are going to make the next stage in

:11:20.:11:23.

their development this is the game they need to win the future. But

:11:24.:11:26.

they will be better from this experience and we will see how that

:11:27.:11:29.

development comes in the next few weeks. You mentioned the bad start

:11:30.:11:34.

from Edinburgh's point of view, from kick-off it wasn't great at all. It

:11:35.:11:39.

led to a trifle Scarlets. This was literally the first kick off of the

:11:40.:11:47.

game, Van der Merwe always on the ball, and it wasn't long after this

:11:48.:11:51.

came out, a good long pass from Steve Shingler who went off and it

:11:52.:11:55.

was Morgan Allen the number eight, Hoyland held off hand-held off to

:11:56.:11:59.

get the support in defence. It came but he missed the tackle. That was

:12:00.:12:03.

disappointing. This is from a different angle. A good long pass,

:12:04.:12:08.

two big parties, look what it did there. You can see what Hoyland is

:12:09.:12:11.

doing, but he is backtracking all the time. Not a bad decision but you

:12:12.:12:15.

have to make the tackle. He will be disappointed with that. At that

:12:16.:12:18.

stage Edinburgh were not playing well, they were under the cosh.

:12:19.:12:24.

There was a bit of spark about the Scarlets can you thought it was

:12:25.:12:27.

going to be a long, long night but Edinburgh really showed character to

:12:28.:12:30.

fight their way back. They didn't panic and that was a good thing as

:12:31.:12:34.

well. They used the clock. They saw there was plenty of time as the game

:12:35.:12:38.

went on to get back into it and took the lead at the perfect time but

:12:39.:12:42.

couldn't quite see it off. Edinburgh came into the game and were camped

:12:43.:12:46.

on the Scarlets line and couldn't get across it, got three points into

:12:47.:12:49.

the second-half but there were times when they making mistakes and it

:12:50.:12:54.

suggests making it too easy for the Scarlets through their own mistakes.

:12:55.:12:57.

At times in the second half they were almost trying too hard, trying

:12:58.:13:02.

to win the game too early. Use the 40 minutes, you want to be leading

:13:03.:13:06.

at the final whistle, not halfway through the second half. A bit of

:13:07.:13:10.

composure and old heads, there were a lot of young heads out there, an

:13:11.:13:14.

old head to say calm down. I suggested when there was the injury

:13:15.:13:18.

for Mike Coman to get the team together, look them in the eye and

:13:19.:13:27.

say this is what we are going to do, OK? A perfect opportunity when there

:13:28.:13:31.

is an injury to say calm down, this is what we are going to do next and

:13:32.:13:42.

then we will do that. They did it individually but I would like to

:13:43.:13:45.

have seen it collectively. This is an example of the mistakes they

:13:46.:13:48.

made, into the second half, a poor kick and Scarlets got the goal, got

:13:49.:13:50.

a break, and put Edinburgh on the back foot. There was a good kick

:13:51.:13:55.

chase there but the missed tackles coming, there's a big there, too big

:13:56.:13:59.

a gap. But scrambling defence, this is where there was a good attitude

:14:00.:14:04.

and the mistake there from the Scarlets, it didn't come to

:14:05.:14:08.

anything. This is the first bit of border fence but a really good bit

:14:09.:14:12.

of scrambling defence, which tells you everything about how the players

:14:13.:14:17.

are working for each other -- this is the first bit of poor defence.

:14:18.:14:21.

Cornell Du Preez making his way up the stairs here, we will get hold of

:14:22.:14:25.

him because he put in a storming performance.

:14:26.:14:26.

the stairs here, we will get hold of him because he put in a storming

:14:27.:14:29.

performance. If you could stand there, commiserations. A great

:14:30.:14:33.

performance from you and disappointing not to get the win?

:14:34.:14:38.

Yes, it was pretty disappointing. The first half was difficult to get

:14:39.:14:43.

out of but we showed up at the end. If we kept on the ball and kept

:14:44.:14:48.

attacking would score -- we could score tries. You made a try, a

:14:49.:14:52.

wonderful off-load, you must have thought we had the making of the

:14:53.:14:56.

match and we can win this? When the first one came before the second

:14:57.:15:00.

try, I think by that point I thought it was a big momentum shift and we

:15:01.:15:05.

could have pulled it through but we got a silly penalty at the end and

:15:06.:15:09.

it cost us. We were talking about the character this young Edinburgh

:15:10.:15:13.

side, the side at the end, a lot of young kids out there, there is

:15:14.:15:16.

character, do you see the quality and these young players? Definitely,

:15:17.:15:21.

there are a lot of young Scottish players coming through. There is a

:15:22.:15:24.

lot of positive things especially with so many boys with Scotland,

:15:25.:15:30.

really positive. You talk about positivity but tonight, after that,

:15:31.:15:33.

not getting the win, that must be hugely frustrating when it was

:15:34.:15:38.

potentially there on a plate for you? It was potentially there but it

:15:39.:15:42.

goes to show you in this professional league, we go back on

:15:43.:15:46.

Monday and see where we could improve and work from there. You

:15:47.:15:51.

were sitting in the top four in the league, you have dropped out with a

:15:52.:15:56.

loss to Cardiff a couple of weeks of back and you do get a bonus point

:15:57.:15:59.

for the defeat but can you get back into the top four towards the end of

:16:00.:16:03.

the season and into the play-offs? Definitely, that has been our goal

:16:04.:16:07.

and as long as we have a chance we can definitely get there. It would

:16:08.:16:12.

be nice to have a final at the home ground, wouldn't it? Definitely, I

:16:13.:16:19.

looked the other day. That would be fantastic, commiserations to night,

:16:20.:16:22.

a good performance from you and generally from the team but thanks

:16:23.:16:27.

for joining us here on BBC Two. Thank you very much. My goodness,

:16:28.:16:34.

he's a big fellow. Even the way he talks, that is leadership and these

:16:35.:16:37.

young players like Jamie Ritchie, who are finding their way in the

:16:38.:16:42.

game, they have to look up to people like him and Mike Coman and learn

:16:43.:16:47.

from them learn from their professionalism, there sadly, you

:16:48.:16:52.

can really into that. He was really impressive -- learn from their

:16:53.:16:58.

wisdom. Let's look at that try, great work from Edinburgh. This is

:16:59.:17:02.

the sort of thing in the first half they were not doing anything about

:17:03.:17:05.

potentially, losing the ball and Scarlets were defending well but

:17:06.:17:10.

great ball from him. He was taking the ball off the contract, this is

:17:11.:17:14.

where the composure in the first half, they let them down here, is he

:17:15.:17:20.

goes between two defenders which is never a strength. It is a better

:17:21.:17:26.

angle you can see here, goes between two Scarlets defenders but a good

:17:27.:17:31.

stretch out there. A big stretch, great try. Just at the right time, a

:17:32.:17:36.

game, good leadership, good forward play, they have really upped their

:17:37.:17:40.

game, the referee started pinging Scarlets in the scrum so you have

:17:41.:17:43.

the momentum shift and Edinburgh were able to run with that will stop

:17:44.:17:48.

they got the winning position and couldn't quite close-out, which was

:17:49.:17:52.

a shame. That try was great to see but there were moments when

:17:53.:17:55.

Edinburgh was breaking down the Scarlets defence but making little

:17:56.:17:58.

mistakes, knock-on the here and there, not the right pass at the

:17:59.:18:03.

right time. yes, again, the set plate tonight was really good. Jamie

:18:04.:18:08.

Richards at the back here, good defence by Scarlets, they get broken

:18:09.:18:13.

away, there is Jamie Richards isolated on his own, he sets it up

:18:14.:18:18.

well -- Jamie Ritchie. They are trying to recycle the forwards and

:18:19.:18:22.

get the big lads to carry forward, goodbye Toolis, players around, the

:18:23.:18:30.

boys have come through and study wasn't men -- and they have said it

:18:31.:18:37.

wasn't for them. It had to go and he had to be more sympathetic in the

:18:38.:18:40.

past. When you are playing on the gain line like that and taking it

:18:41.:18:44.

up, the scrum-half or whoever is there has to really make sure the

:18:45.:18:48.

path is weighted as far as it leads to go. That needed to be

:18:49.:18:51.

sympathetic. Then they could have recycled it. You can fire it if you

:18:52.:18:55.

are firing across the defensive line but not when you're taking it into

:18:56.:18:59.

players coming into the defensive line. When substitutions happened

:19:00.:19:04.

there was alleged Edinburgh's play. You want your bench to make an

:19:05.:19:09.

impact. I really thought they did. Charge down to tell you all about

:19:10.:19:13.

the pressure team has been able to exert, that was the first one, look

:19:14.:19:17.

at the kick chase, everyone started with that edge and intensity they

:19:18.:19:21.

got into them. Scarlets tried to fight their way out, the scrum-half

:19:22.:19:25.

is trying to organise things, get into a good kicking position so they

:19:26.:19:29.

set it up, good defence hereby Edinburgh. They are now happy.

:19:30.:19:33.

Steffan Jones is happy at the base and they go for one more sign, into

:19:34.:19:38.

the kicking position, but look at the intensity of the Edinburgh

:19:39.:19:41.

players, getting into position. There's a dead ball here, bang, and

:19:42.:19:46.

good pressure, and this is what led to Van der Merwe out there for the

:19:47.:19:50.

line-out and from this line-out was where it ended up with the try. We

:19:51.:19:54.

have had them in here, Du Preez off-loads it to Alex Toolis and that

:19:55.:19:58.

was the one which was followed up by a conversion by Greig Tonks, who got

:19:59.:20:04.

Edinburgh in front and they just couldn't quite hold it off. Yes,

:20:05.:20:10.

great to watch the try, Alan Solomons thanks for joining us

:20:11.:20:14.

tonight here. We have just been speaking to Cornell Du Preez, the

:20:15.:20:17.

real frustration from his point of view, he felt it was a game that was

:20:18.:20:20.

therefore Edinburgh to win but just at the end they were losing that

:20:21.:20:24.

penalty and ultimately losing the match. Yes, the first half we didn't

:20:25.:20:29.

play particularly well. We made too many errors. You can see the

:20:30.:20:34.

mistakes, you spoke about it at half-time, really a much improved

:20:35.:20:38.

performance, we went ahead at 21-19, the game was ours and I must say, I

:20:39.:20:42.

haven't studied the television as carefully as you have but I studied

:20:43.:20:45.

it up there and it didn't look offside to me. My view is that on

:20:46.:20:51.

these things you are best served in the competition of this nature on --

:20:52.:20:56.

in having three neutral officials. You are really frustrated with that?

:20:57.:21:01.

Yes, I am, I will take it through the proper channels, the referee

:21:02.:21:04.

manager, I think this is a really good competition we have got and I

:21:05.:21:08.

think you need neutral officials. Let's talk about the positives, we

:21:09.:21:12.

have watched both your tries, coming out at the business end of the game

:21:13.:21:17.

as well, when you made a couple of changes, there was an edged

:21:18.:21:19.

Edinburgh and your pack in particular were causing problems

:21:20.:21:24.

there? It was terrific, the guys that came on and made a difference.

:21:25.:21:28.

Alex Toolis on the blindside flank, we lost Hamish, Jamie Ritchie did to

:21:29.:21:37.

render sleek, Turner came on and did terrifically -- Jamie Ritchie did

:21:38.:21:40.

tremendously. It's encouraging to see the young boys coming on and

:21:41.:21:44.

playing so well. I'm disappointed for the boys and for the team that

:21:45.:21:48.

we didn't get the win we deserved tonight. I was impressed by how this

:21:49.:21:52.

young side at the end, there was a young team out there but they didn't

:21:53.:21:56.

panic, they worked their way back into the game. The young players

:21:57.:21:59.

have a good rugby sense about them, is that something that has been

:22:00.:22:05.

impressing you? Yes, it's something that is our vision for Edinburgh

:22:06.:22:09.

rugby. We have to build a sustainable club through our young,

:22:10.:22:11.

indigenous Scottish qualified talent and we see it coming through. Jamie

:22:12.:22:16.

Ritchie was at school two years ago, George is still a young boy but was

:22:17.:22:21.

at school last year, all those young boys that came on made a difference

:22:22.:22:24.

and the enthusiasm at the end was terrific to see. How can you take

:22:25.:22:31.

this defeat and take it to the next stage? Winning tight games, a club

:22:32.:22:35.

that can look into the top four, how do you make the difference to win

:22:36.:22:38.

the games rather than losing them? It's difficult, the difficult part

:22:39.:22:44.

is we lost the game at the end to a penalty that I didn't feel was

:22:45.:22:49.

justified. I think we have won many tight games. You look at the second

:22:50.:22:52.

game against Glasgow, we went through the phases and tonight and

:22:53.:22:55.

fortunately a penalty was given at the end which cost us the match. --

:22:56.:23:00.

unfortunately. The positive thing for us is we didn't play well in the

:23:01.:23:04.

first half and we showed away from home we can turn it around with a

:23:05.:23:07.

really positive second-half performance. We have a chance to

:23:08.:23:11.

watch the penalty on the screen here, you have seen this for the

:23:12.:23:14.

first time now, look and see what you are thinking. Give us your

:23:15.:23:16.

comments on this? you are thinking. Give us your

:23:17.:23:23.

comments on this? That is not... He is playing it already, it is blown

:23:24.:23:28.

before that happened, so you would have to take that. We need it

:23:29.:23:34.

further back than that. If you take it back, it doesn't look as if he

:23:35.:23:39.

was offside. If it was multi-phases, you would maybe expect a lazy run,

:23:40.:23:45.

that was off 12-macro phases. Edinburgh set here, this has been

:23:46.:23:49.

called from the first phase and you are rarely offside at the first

:23:50.:23:55.

phase. A decent line speed and we're all behind the thing, he passes, we

:23:56.:23:59.

are still behind, there is no problem. I don't see on what basis

:24:00.:24:03.

he has given a penalty. The referee, it is not Andrew Brace's false, the

:24:04.:24:09.

touch judge tells him and the touch judge is not neutral. Clearly you

:24:10.:24:13.

are angry and its frustration for you because your team did enough

:24:14.:24:16.

perhaps to win the game. Thank you for your time and thank you for

:24:17.:24:20.

looking at the analysis as well and clarifying what you thought. Thanks

:24:21.:24:24.

very much indeed. It's a pleasure, thank you. Heavens above. We were

:24:25.:24:30.

not picking up that but he was very angry with the offside decision and

:24:31.:24:34.

the penalty that cost Edinburgh the match. We couldn't see the line

:24:35.:24:38.

standing at the side of the pitch, sitting at the side of the pitch.

:24:39.:24:42.

They can see it face on. That was first phase, very rarely are your

:24:43.:24:46.

side. It didn't seem glaring. It was the touch judge that gave it. This

:24:47.:24:51.

has been a criticism of the Pro12, that needs neutral officials, all

:24:52.:24:58.

three of them. I think Glasgow and Edinburgh are justified to have some

:24:59.:25:02.

complaints over the year. That is a massive difference for the game,

:25:03.:25:05.

because we have talked about the character, they have talked about

:25:06.:25:09.

how Edinburgh dug deep to get in front in this game and you want the

:25:10.:25:14.

laws to be applied. Alan Solomons is justified with his grievance and

:25:15.:25:18.

it's a shame that ultimately it has cost Edinburgh.

:25:19.:25:22.

You think getting into the top four, getting into the play-offs and that

:25:23.:25:26.

final at Murrayfield, the home potential, imagine if it was

:25:27.:25:30.

Edinburgh against Glasgow! Wouldn't that be great? They need to do some

:25:31.:25:34.

work to get their! That would take some doing from where both sides are

:25:35.:25:38.

now! Edinburgh have over performed this year and I think they have

:25:39.:25:42.

exploited the opportunity that has come their way, maybe because some

:25:43.:25:45.

of the other teams who have more players with international duty and

:25:46.:25:53.

they have -- benefited from that. They keep winning. They can get the

:25:54.:25:57.

momentum and confidence and that is why a winter day could have really

:25:58.:26:01.

spurred them to come back down next week, 220 miles down the road to

:26:02.:26:07.

Ospreys, which we will be again, -- to 20 miles. They could have a

:26:08.:26:12.

spring in their step, knowing they could win. These are the games that

:26:13.:26:17.

will turn a good side into a great side, and a side that can get into

:26:18.:26:23.

the play-offs. Let's turn our attention to tomorrow, the big

:26:24.:26:26.

international match, Wales against Scotland. What do you think will be

:26:27.:26:29.

key for Scotland after the disappointing start of the Six

:26:30.:26:34.

Nations campaign, and the memory of two years ago, 51-3 two years ago.

:26:35.:26:40.

We don't want that memory but we want quick ball, that's what we need

:26:41.:26:44.

tomorrow, and unstructured game, and off-loading game, I want to see the

:26:45.:26:49.

tempo up, players we know that can be creative and exploit gaps like

:26:50.:26:53.

Mark Bennett and Lin Russell, Tommy Seymour, come onto the ball and have

:26:54.:26:58.

a bright -- Finn Russell. Take the character we saw today and threw

:26:59.:27:03.

everything at Wales. The game tomorrow will suit Scotland better

:27:04.:27:06.

than last week and they can contribute to that. Up against a big

:27:07.:27:11.

challenge, I think you like to face these challenges. The Millennium

:27:12.:27:14.

Stadium, the principality stadium, a great place to play and the players

:27:15.:27:19.

will enjoy it and express themselves. If they do it they will

:27:20.:27:22.

enjoy themselves. If Scotland don't play well they won't win. The under

:27:23.:27:29.

20s lost last night, I beg your pardon, Edinburgh losing tonight,

:27:30.:27:32.

can Scotland pick up from that tomorrow and maybe win? It's

:27:33.:27:36.

unrelated, obviously, but I think there will be players out there

:27:37.:27:40.

going to bed tonight really desperate to right the wrongs of

:27:41.:27:46.

last week. The players are the supporters are disappointed, we are

:27:47.:27:49.

disappointed in the media, the players are equally if not more so

:27:50.:27:53.

disappointed, because they are the ones out there. They want to get

:27:54.:27:57.

that feeling they had in the World Cup, the togetherness. We are slow

:27:58.:28:00.

starters in the Six Nations and we will be better tomorrow. Whether

:28:01.:28:03.

that is good enough to beat Wales, time will tell, but I want to see

:28:04.:28:06.

Scotland play with the same bite and character that we saw Edinburgh have

:28:07.:28:15.

tonight. OK, you will see Andy live on BBC One for that game tomorrow,

:28:16.:28:18.

you will hear me on BBC radio Scotland. Period Llanelli they are

:28:19.:28:20.

turning off the light, so I reckon we should go home! You should

:28:21.:28:25.

tonight. Edinburgh were beaten tonight. It was a shame. Thank you

:28:26.:28:27.

for your company, good night. I've had a message from China,

:28:28.:28:35.

from my birth mother. How far would you go to save

:28:36.:29:05.

the family who gave you up? She's too ashamed

:29:06.:29:13.

to look at you, Mei. 'Sister, help me. If no-one

:29:14.:29:17.

speak for me, I will die.' Part of BBC Two's China season,

:29:18.:29:22.

a compelling three-part drama...
