live at Aintree. We have fabulous conditions for the first day of

this three-day Festival. It's a chilly day, but it's clear and it's

sunny. We haven't had any rain here on the course at least for 48 hours

or so, that's that's Becher's Brook. It's been modified. The canal turn,

the challenge there is to turn sharp left as you jump it. The

runners angle out to take the corner on the corner. Look at the

course, it looks in perfect condition. The biggest fence is

still The Chair. It looks even bigger because it's narrower and

after that they stream past the grandstand which will be packed

today. It's Liverpool Day and thousands have been pouring in from

train stations, bus stations, from cars, all over the place to

celebrate everything that is good about jump racing and also is good

about this part of the world. And they have a real chance to

celebrate a hero in our opening race, because Big Buck's is in the

paddock here and people crowding around the outside of the paddock

to get a close look at a horse who is completely unflappable. He is so

cool and he has run up a consecutive run of 16 wins on the

trot. He is going for his 17th today, that will be in our opening

race. He is like Roger Federer, he is so cool, taking it all in,

looking at people saying hello, are you here for me? Today they are. We

have three days of fabulous racing, culminating in the most famous

jumps race in the world. I cannot remember a better day for

the Grand National... At the line... Marvellous, marvellous.

They come to the Elbow, it's still wide open! Ballabriggs at 14 hrf 1.

National history. Absolutely unbelievable. I think I am dreaming,

I really do. Red Rum wins The National! What do

you think about it now? I think it's bloody marvellous!

without Ginger McCain, he sadly died last year in September. His

son Donald trying to do what only his father has managed to do with

Red Rum and Ballabriggs, bidding to become the first horse horse since

Red Rum to win back-to-back Grand Nationals, the bust was unveiled

today and Mick alongside me, he would be very excited about today.

When I got on the M62 goosebumps all over, the memories come

flooding back. Devon Loch, Red Rum and luckily for me a winner in The

National as well. The jockeys who are riding today and tomorrow will

be full of excitement as well. The coolest of the lot is AP McCoy and

he is here for probably the 17th year in a row I should think. He is

heading for his 17th championship and he will be riding Synchronised

in the Grand National, bidding to become the first horse since Golden

Miller to win the Gold Cup and Grand National. The festival was

kicked off in great style by the three-times world champion gymnast

Beth Tweddle. She took a break from her training to cut the ribbon with

Ian Bartlet and the meeting starts in good style because over here is

Big Buck's, I was taupbging -- talking about him earlier, saying

he is like Roger Federer. I wonder if that's the secret to himself.

His lazy style of racing, it makes everybody think they have a chance

to beat him. He has beaten off every challenge foreare the last 16

times. He is so beautiful. He is the perfect outline for a racehorse.

He looks gleaming in his coat. He is trying to beat a record that he

equalled at the Cheltenham when he won The World Hurdle for the fourth

time, a record set in the 50s by Sir Ken. I think he deserves to be,

because with this horse he has raced in the top grade against the

best there is. Everything, every young horse that's tried to beat

him they've failed. He's laughed at them. We saw him last year, he

loves the track. A reminder of the Grand National news this morning,

and that's that Always Waning and Lebo Bay. Hello Bud gets in, and

Neptune As well. Lots of jockeys who will be wishing they were on

something. There's lots of rain around but it's not enough for Lebo

Bay. You were in Liverpool yesterday and it fell in the city

but not here at the course. Let's look at what we have lined up for

you this afternoon. Big Buck's has won 16 races in a

row. Today he goes for the all-time record of consecutive wins. We

could see him in the winners' enclosure for a 17th straight time.

We will be behind the scenes at the yard of Nicky Henderson. Could he

win the Grand National for the first time?

After the fatalities last year in the Grand National the course has

been modified and all attempts are being made to make it safer. We

will be reviewing the review. We have Burton Port, Riverside Theatre,

What A Friend for Sir Alex Ferguson in there, too. We head over the

fences for the John Smith's Foxhunter chase, restricted to to

amateur riders. A huge crowd here at Aintree. This is what they will

be enjoying and you can too from at non-runners to tell you about. Both

of them in our second race. Ruby Walsh switches to Dodging

Bullets. Let's head up to the commentary box

and have a word with Jim McGrath who can give us the runners and

riders for this opening race. Yes, can he do it, that's the big

question? Big Buck's this afternoon. He is going for his 17th

consecutive victory. He will beat Sir Ken's record if he can do that.

Let's look at the runners and riders for our first race, the

three-miler. Big Buck's is one of the -- has won the last three years

in a row. Number one, Across The Bay. Big Buck's, Crack Away Jack,

Poungach, Restless Harry, Smad Place, Tidal Bay, and Won In The

will be the sort of price that actually it's not even worth having

a bet, although we have heard this morning that one punter has

invested an awful lot of money and believes that Big Buck's is a

certainty. Let's find out what's going on in the betting ring with

John and Gary fantastic day down in the ring and

the next three days we are going to be keeping people up to date. We

also have a treat, we have Tom Segal, who is he? I call him the

governor, whatever selection he puts up usually it gets smashed in

odds, he is going to give us a winner for today and please God the

winner of the Grand National. This is all about records at Aintree

this year. Look at this bet in the firs race that William Hill have

laid, Big Buck's, �500,000 at 1-5 to win 100,000. That's half a

million. It's a cash bet. Somebody's gone in and had 500,000

to win 100,000. He has won his last 16 races. 17 we hope for the punter.

500,000 reasons why he wants it to certainty. But I think Restless

Harry will run a big race here. Anybody playing eachway at home

don't forget it's the first three places here. We have eight runners,

I think they'll have a run for their money with Restless Harry,

but the favourite looks a good thing. But 500,000!

Joining us to review this first race is the champion jockey AP

McCoy who rides Synchronised on Saturday. The big one would be nice.

Most exciting the Gold Cup and I remember that day at Cheltenham you

were keen on his chances the evening evening before and that day

as well. You really fancied him. Yeah, he's bulls been a good stayer

-- he's always been a good stayer and to win National races proved

that and I am glad that he won the Gold Cup. The Gold Cup is the

pinnacle of our sport. Obviously he has a big task on Saturday. No

horse has won both since Golden Miller but records are there to be

broken and why shouldn't he do it? We were talking about the buzz we

get coming here and he was feeling it driving here, do you still get

excited about coming to Aintree? You do, it's one of our biggest

meetings. The The Grand National is probably the biggest horse race in

the world. Let's look at the horse that actually would have been good

enough to run in a Gold Cup but after he unSaturdayed Sam --

unseated Sam Thomas he went back to hurdling and has been unbeaten

since. And you are part of that record-setting trend. You have won

on him how many times? I rode him twice when Ruby was injured and won

on him both times at Newbury. An amazing horse, obviously with 16

wins in a row it's obvious to say that, but got a great cruising

speed. Does as Ruby says, what good stayers do, comes alive when you

want him. Doesn't seem to have any flaws. Probably the best staying

hurdler definitely of my time and I have seen a few good ones.

horse of a lifetime for Ruby Walsh to ride and for Paul Nicholls to

train, he is blessed with a wealth of good horses but this boy is

exceptional, Big Buck's. It's very, very hard to see him getting beaten,

Mick, but he is interesting to watch in a race. He doesn't always

make it look easy. He doesn't. There is sa lot of guys at home who

play in running betting and they've made a lot of money off this horse,

at times he looks beaten but it's almost like he is playing with

everybody, just keeping them interested. You know, what an

amazing horse this fella is. I want to be able to say I was there when

he broke the record. Let's have a word with the family that own him,

the Stewart family. And how much they adore him, they're with Ian.

Thank you, Clare. Yes, how big is your mantelpiece? I don't know,

it's a couple of mantelpieces, but it's a reasonable size, Ian. Let's

see if we can make it bigger today. 16 so far, he is an amazing horse.

He is a horse of a lifetime and probably a fluke I would have

thought. How nervous are you? How nervous do you get every time and

are you now you have got to this record, is it more nerve-racking

for you? I think so. You have to respect his achievements and in the

game and you don't get twitchy when something like this, one of the

greatest race tracks in the world, there would be something wrong with

you. And at home... He came up here this morning, arrived about about

6.00, walked the box and now he is walking in the ring. A quick

question, later in the fox hunters. We brought him back on the

Foxhunters, young James 17 years of age takes the ride. We think as

long as he jumps around he will be there or thereabouts. Good luck

with both of them. We are all going to be shouting this first one home.

Good luck. Thank you very much. Exciting day for Andy Stewart. If

there's a horse that might upset him today, could it be Smad Place?

He finished third in The World Hurdle. The bell is going to tell

the jockeys to get on. They've only walked into the paddock, not a lot

of time to get instructions. He was very much ridden to be placed, and

if you do that in a race like this you have every chance of being so.

He is a smart horse, he is an improver. Again he is a great

advertisement. Alan King's horses are very much in a richer vein of

form this year than last. Alan King was the last treupber to win this -

- trainer to win this race. Big Buck's has dominated but in 2008 he

won it with Blazing Bailey who has recently been retired. Alan having

a quick chat with Robert Thornton who doesn't have a ride in the

Grand National. I find that unbelievable. Things can change and

you want to make sure you are here on Saturday and available just in

the paddock. He didn't go to the Cheltenham Festival. No, but this

horse really catches my eye in the paddock. He is almost like a mirror.

If you are looking to back something that finishes placed, he

stands out for me. And he does go well fresh. He hasn't run for 102

days. The jockey has filled in well when

Ruby hasn't been around. I think Big Buck's will win and Smad Place

be second. Pretty boring but I think Big

Buck's and Smad Place are going to have it pretty much between them.

This is a frustrating horse, Tidal Bay. Oh, my word, does he have

talent? He races with his head held very high, so he looks awkward.

Sometimes his jumping leave as bit to be desired. He throws races away

by putting in a few sloppy jumps. There is no his ability though.

Paul Nicholls has a strangled hold on the race, apart from Smad Place.

He trains Tidal Bay, Big Buck's and puenpuefpblt Ruby is on board Big

Buck's and that's the -- Big Buck's and Poungach. Ruby is on board Big

Buck's and that's the best place to you, he goes through what they call

a flat spot, does he feel like he's not going to pick up or is it

deceptive ive on the eye? He is the ultimate there. Cheltenham, he

wanted to make sure it was a test of stamina. He comes alive as soon

as you grab hold of him properly. He's the sign of a pure horse, when

you grab hold of them he's there. And you can see suddenly he comes

awake, his ears are pricked. What are the conditions like out there?

Rishi Persad and Richard Pitman are on the course. How is it looking

the It is beautiful out here, Clare. Bit of a headwind into the faces of

the horse as they come up the home straight. We are at the one of the

most formidable fences in the world, The Chair. It is good to soft in

places. It is good ground, in my estimation. Remember they weigh

half a tonne, so we'll see how they open it up. I will be surprised if

they don't have to water. official description is good to

soft, good in places. Let's wander on to the hurdles course. It is

officially good to soft but there's a lovely covering of grass. But

underneath it there's quite good ground. There is, but to get

through this carpet, it is there to take the concussion out of it. This

is perfect, good ground. But the dilemma is, do they water and then

the heavens open? Or do they not and it drys out until Saturday?

forecast for the three days of the might it was that we might get the

odd shower, which would take away the need to water. If we don't get

the odd shower before the Grand National, will they need to water?

I would say without a doubt. That's health and safety policy, slow them

down a bit. The amateurs' race today over the big fences the, they

will go lickety-split. They will. We hope that Big Buck's will go

lickety-split in the opening race. This is the shot from the

helicopter coming down to the start of this three mile one furlong

hurdle race. How will the race pan out, in terms of tactics? Restless

Harry probably ruined his chances of finishing second or third. I see

no reason for them to change tactics. I think Restless Harry

will (Inaudible) just ride him so he is handy enough so he can press

on when the other horses quicken up. He will quicken away. Ruby will

keep flopping him up and down on the straight. He will probably do

the same, be handy enough and close enough so if the others quicken a

bit he can go them. He looks a slow horse but he really goes.

amount of Mickey taking you and Ruby do... He is probably better at

it than I am. He will ride Big Buck's the handy way. He's not a

slow horse. The easiest way is to keep it as simple as possible.

is it going to take to get him beat? Someone running out and rug

being -- rugby tackling him. It is a horse race and these things can

happen. On all known form he is going to win again. You saw a shot

there after Won In The Dark. Andrew Lynch is on board, who had a very

good Cheltenham Festival. Let's head to the commentary box. Jim

McGrath is joined by Richard Dunwoody. It's interesting, Big

Buck's, they've tried everything to get him beaten. They thought if he

waited and they kicked they could be able to catch him out. Last time

he was closer. They don't seem to be able to get a tactic to him.

Reviewingy is riding him. The main thing is he sits handy and doesn't

give them too much to do. He looks a picture. Is there any conceivable

way he can get beaten today? There's a few flights of hurdles,

Jim. Generally, Ruby has been quoted as saying he would be good

enough to be there in a Champion Hurdle. Given he jumps be, he has

his own style of jumping, Jim. You know... It's a hurdle race. It's

over obstacles. Something like that could happen and I'm touching wood

that it doesn't. You've ridden many great horses in the past. You know

the pressures are on and you have to jump them. As long as he's able

to measure them and get into a rhythm. Ruby will get him into a

rhythm quick enough. And they are off and running. Three miles and

half a furlong, jumping a total of 13 flights in this BGC Partners

Liverpool Hurdle. Won for the last three years by Big Buck's.

Big Buck's jumps it in third position. The leader is Across The

Bay, by two lengths to Poungach in second, to Big Buck's in third.

That nose-banded champion on the inside. Bidding for his 17th

consecutive win over hurdles today. Two circuits remaining. In fourth

position Restless Harry. A length- and-a-half to Smad Place. Tucked on

the inside of Won In The Dark. Three wide is Tidal Bay. At the

rear of the field is Crack Away Jack. Heading towards the back

straight on the first occasion. Across The Bay with the noseband

just lobbing along. A good, even pace in this staying contest. Leads

by two-and-a-half, three lengths or so to up on the outside Poungach in

the spotted sleefts. Tucked behind them is Big Buck's. Getting into

that rhythmic style as they head down the back. Further back in the

field as they come to the third is Restless Harry. Followed by Smad

Place on the inside. Then Won In The Dark and back towards the rear

of the field is Tidal Bay. He is second last. A gap then to at the

rear of the field Crack Away Jack. Heading towards flight number three

and the leader on the inside Across The Bay, two lengths to Poungach.

Two away to Big Buck's on the inside as he gets over that in good,

fluent style. Travelling well on the inside for Ruby Walsh. A half

length on the outer is Restless Harry. They continue their journey

to the fourth. Smad Place tucked away on the inside. Further back

Won In The Dark, out wider then is Tidal Bay, and two or three lengths

away is Crack Away Jack. To the far corner of the course and the

favourite is exactly where you would want him to be. Travelling

kindly as well Richard. That's right, Jim. Ruby is there, where he

wants to be, sat third. It is where I would want to be in the race. So

far they are all jumping well and everything is travelling well.

they swing towards the entrance to the home straight on the first

occasion, just under two miles to travel. Across The Bay the leader

by a length, to on the outside Poungach. Half a length away tucked

away is Big Buck's, just lobbing along behind these two pace-setters.

Further back is Restless Harry on the outside. Then Smad Place as

they come to the fifth. They are followed by Won In The Dark and

Tidal Bay, and last is Crack Away Jack. Getting up towards flight

number six. On the far side Across The Bay draws towards it. He jumps

it clean in spectacular style. A half length in front of Poungach as

they get up the straight towards flight number seven. Across The Bay

on the far side leads to it from Poungach and Big Buck's. Just in

behind them as they get over seven in good style. Two lengths to Smad

Place, who is cracking the favourite. Restless Harry, a length

to Won In The Dark, followed by Tidal Bay. Crack Away Jack. They

still no change. Not much change so far, Jim. He got a little bit tight

to the last hurdle. He is travelling well. Everything is

going to plan. We'll see what unfold as they go into the final

circuit. Across The Bay leads comfortably bay length to Poungach

on the outside. Then Big Buck's tucked away third on the inner.

Further back is Restless Harry, travelling on the outside of Smad

Place. A length-and-a-half to Crack Away Jack. On the inside of Won In

The Dark, two lengths to Tidal Bay at the tail of the field. They head

into the back for the final time, towards flight number 8. Across The

Bay leans over it from Poungach... And rest vest a faller! He's

brought down Won In The Dark. There is two gone down the back. At

flight number 8. They continue their journey down the far side.

Across The Bay the leader from Poungach and Big Buck's. Just

behind them is Smad Place. They are clear of Crack Away Jack. Both

jockeys are sitting up OK. Tidal Bay is tailed off as they head

towards four out. It is Across The Bay on the inside. It is getting

low and Smad Place has gone! A faller. They head now towards the

exit from the back. It is Across The Bay being joined and being

challenged by Poungach on the outside. Two lengths away is Big

Buck's. They swing around that turn and make their way across the too

many of the track. In fourth position Crack Away Jack. They are

the only ones in contention. Forget about Tidal Bay, who has tailed

right off. They head towards ten trance of the home straight. Three

left to jump. It is Across The Bay, but here comes the champ on the

outside. Big Buck's. Bidding for his 17th consecutive hurdle victory.

Ruby Walsh stealing a chicy peek. They were fold by Crack Away Jack

and Poungach. Big Buck's moves up on the outside. Across The Bay and

Big Buck's together. Big Buck's now powers into the lead followed by

Crack Away Jack and then Poungach. They've got two left to jump. Big

Buck's in front. Draws towards the second last. Over it clear. Three

in front, Crack Away Jack, who is giving Chase, followed by Across

The Bay. But the champion is making a supreme effort, with one left to

jump, Big Buck's comes towards the last. He's over in immaculate style,

five lengths in front. He is going to break Sir Ken's record.Th

consecutive victories over hurdles. What a horse he is! A true champion.

He comes up to the line now. The warm applause of his appreciative

crowd at Liverpool. Up to the line, Big Buck's wins it by seven lengths.

In second is Crack Away Jack. Third was Across The Bay. Followed by

with Tidal Bay and Poungach is the last of the finishers. What a horse

he is. What a horse, Jim. That was fantastic for racing, to see him do

that. Broken the record. Couldn't have done it any easier today.

Jumped superb all the way. He really switched on. Then two horses

fell and that set the race up for him with Smad Place falling as well.

Crack Away Jack, I thought he looked to be travelling nicely. But

didn't have a lot to give him a straight. He's done a grate job,

the champion. Ruby Walsh riding with supreme confidence throughout.

He knows this horse so well. A 17th consecutive victory over hurdles.

Absolutely unbelievable. He hasn't been beaten since New Year's Day

2009. It all came about because he actually made a mess of that last

jump. He got rid of Sam Thomas in Three and a quarter lengths between

second and third. First, Big Buck's. Second Crack Away Jack, and third

Across The Bay and fourth Tidal Bay. Those are just beautiful shots.

That's a horse that's happy in what he is doing and a jockey that all

he wants to do is pat him and say well done, you are on your own a

record-setter, a record-breaker and an amazing horse, iconic horse.

It's a thrill to be here to watch him and AP, for you to have been

part of that story, as well, it may hurt to stand on the side and watch

but it's an amazing thing. I was privileged to be allowed to ride

him when Ruby was injured, amazing horse. That record of 17 wins in a

row, amazing training performance as well to keep a horse that right

for 17 starts. Fair play to Paul Nicholls for that. The horse

deserves all the credit. He went around there, done as we thought

and he is as a lot of people say, a cash machine, just collect your

money every time he runs. Will we see another one like him, who knows.

Andy Stewart is with Rishi now. At what point did you stop being

nervous? When he went over the line. He seemed to be idling in front.

Alan King's horse was behind us. Just take every horse as it comes.

Can you tell me what emotions you go through as he goes over the line,

a lot of professionals who have fall nonlove with this horse,

they've become emotional. It's so flattering of the people today here,

coming up and asking for autographs, mine, not the horse's, and he is

more newsworthy than I am, but it's a privilege. Will there be new

challenges next season? I would have thought if he is that much

older it will be five next year. record-breaker in the first race at

Aintree. It's a pleasure to be here. Thank you.

So, here he is, have a look at him, a true champion.

He has such a relaxed presence really. We just see the way he is

able to arch his neck and just go along in that rhythmic style. It's

characteristic of him. He is very relaxed. Just as soon as he turned

down the back the second time he looked to grab hold of the bit and

then turning into the strait the race was all over. This is a

perfect start to the meeting for Ruby. He comes here with high

exceptions, as ever, and some great rides. Yeah, smashing rides over

the few days. Lovely to get a pressure ride like this, you know

it should win, so you want everything to go right and that's -

he goes back into confidence with the rest of the meeting now. Just

confirmation that the three horses who fell, Restless Harry, who

brought down Won In The Dark and Smad Place who fell at the fourth

last, all are fine and so are their jockeys, which is a big relief. But

Big Buck's there receiving the plaudits of the crowd and Judy in

the red, just wanting to love him, because this is what he does. He

does it with so little bother. OK, the race was reduced to pretty much

nothing when the main dangers - certainly when Smad Place fell. You

still have to jump the hurdles. have. Look at his ears, straight

ahead. He is looking at the obstacles ahead. He almost knows

where he is at this stage. He has been here a few times now. Just

watch, when he lands over this Ruby has to shake him up a little bit.

You said it in commentary, he is only playing with him. Obviously a

worry he could maybe pull himself up a little bit in front. He was

impress - shows you how much luck you need and a good horse they're

easy to ride and you can keep things simple on them. They're

uncomplicated. This horse might need to be dropped in, could have

got brought down by the horse that fell. Good horses make the job easy

for you. You can keep them out of trouble, keep it simple on him. He

is an amazing horse. There is a lot of pressure riding him. There is

Paul nick olts -- Nichols, almost couldn't bear to watch. Let's hear

what he thought of it. It's always a joy after they cross

the line, Paul. Yeah, it was straightforward today. Travelled,

did everything right. Very happy with him. Great ride again. I could

have ridden him today! A lot of people here would have fancied

being aboard today. The hardest bit is getting on, it was as

competitive as Cheltenham. He boated in -- bolted in today.

had a harder race than usual at Cheltenham, to see him fresh.

are lucky we never gotten to the bottom of how good he really is.

He's never really been extended over hurdles. I would say there is

more there. Would there be a new new challenge for him. Andy was

saying same four races. The same routine. Now he has got older, pays

to give him a run in between The Long Walk and Cheltenham. He's come

here in good form to follow the same route. What a joy it is to

have ridden all these great horses. People try and squeeze some words

out of jockeys and say this is the best I have ever sat on. I suppose

you will be close to saying that? Yeah, I did also ride Kauto Star

and it's hard to compare one over the other. They're different horses,

one is a hurdler, one a chaser. Two incredible horses. We have both

been incredibly lucky to have been involved. God willing he will stay

sound and nice if we can go on and will be tough and saupbd as --

sound as Kauto has been. Well done to the team. Thank you.

It was never really in doubt, Big punter who laid out �500,000 to win

�100,000, it took him about six six minutes to win the money, I don't

think any building society will give you 100,000 for nothing. A

great horse, isn't it, John. 7-4 to win The World Hurdle next year, the

best price we have so far, that's with - and even money with Coral,

seven William Hill. Sounds generous at the moment. There are the

jockeys coming back after their falls. Good to see them up and

walking around. And there is Chuck Thornton,

already weighing out for the next. Ruby Walsh getting congratulated by

everybody. A wonderful thing to be associated with a horse like that.

A record has been set here. What a thrill in the opening race of the

Aintree Festival. AP is with us, because he is not in the first two

races, you are in the third on Burton Port. It's an intriguing

race, what do you think of it? much so. Obviously a lot of these

horses have been to Cheltenham. Burton Port ran well in the Gold

Cup. Nacarat, Hunt Ball has improved, still about 16lbs to find

but he is an improver. Very open race. Hopefully Burton Port can

outstay the best arest. -- rest. Hunt Ball is owned by a farmer, you

never know anybody make more noise when the horse wins. He says he won

half a million at the Cheltenham Festival. Crazy sorts of money. You

are not doing it with any punting allowed, you are doing it for

winners. We wish you well. Lovely way to start the meeting by hearing

from him. Let's look to the Grand National and get the latest betting

news. We know who line up and the reserves who were allowed to come

in until tomorrow morning. Let's go down to the betting ring and rejoin

Gary and John. We are with Tom from The Racing

Post. You have had a good look, what's the initial thing looking at

the race? It's very, very difficult this year, as you can imagine. 40

runners. The ground, we are not sure how it's going to be. More

More showers will make it an interesting list. There is

shortlist I have, I have to start with Synchronised. He is coming

back after an impressive performance. He needs soft ground.

If it doesn't rain before the National he will get too far back,

that's not a good thing. 5-1, is that value? It's not, terrible

price. The other thing is there's been 17 horses have won a Gold Cup

and come here and only one horse has won, Golden Miller. That's a

big ask. The stats are against him. He has a better chance than some

that have tried. He is the strongest stayer I have seen for

many a year. The Welsh National, that form. If he can jump around

which is the issue, because it's a different to the we will -- Welsh

National. Here if you you get too far behind too early. We want

outsiders for my nan and grandad. have backed a horse called Treacle

from Ireland. He was third in the Lexus Chase. I backed him a few

weeks back. Organised Confusion, he won the Fairy House Irish Grand

National last year. Because I Couldn't See. Jumps brilliantly.

Can't forget Ballabriggs and if the rain comes West End Rocker. What

about today, what's the pearl of wisdom for today? I would suggest

having a few quid in the Red Rum Chase, 4.15 on Free World. He was a

very good horse a few years back for Paul Nicholls. Rated I think

about 20lbs higher than now. He's come back to a good mark. Ground is

right. I think he will go well today. The major football match of

the weekend? Southampton and Reading on Friday, that's the big

one. You can't be serious! That's the crucial one for promotion. As

for your game, we all know what you want to win. I haven't forgiven you

for putting in the Racing Post. bookies hate you every week because

you are the governor. But he is a nice fella. He is a nice fella and

a held of a tipster. These are the see Nicky.

I had 15 years a stable jockey here with Nicky Henderson. This is my

first time back as a reporter with the BBC and it feels a little bit

weird. But, in national hunt racing at the moment, whether you are a

reporter, member of the public, jockey or trainer, this is the

hottest place to be. If we can just have one winner on the firs day it

takes the pressure off. The second day was ridiculous. It was an

amazing week. The horses were great throughout the week. The jockeys

were good too. Riverside Theatre just won it! What

an unbelievable week for Nicky Henderson. Five days later it's all

over, but it seems a long time ago now. It's all sort of all roads

lead to Aintree. And Nicky and Aintree go back a long way. After

tpeuf inish -- finishing five teenth as a jockey, he won the

following year. Two years later in his first

attempt as a trainer he was second. Since then another second, a third,

a fourth and two fifths. I rode for him seven times. Nicky has had the

whole National experience, except a win. I had about six consecutive

fallers at the first. I rode a few! You remember them better than I

would. Then we had a lot of years when I couldn't even have a winner

at the meeting. It was terrible. I think if it was a Test match it

would have been very good, I think I got to 63-0 or something. There

is a National winner here and he has been here for 34 years. Cork

skwreu Brown landed the big one to lead the winner... Did you back

it? I had �10 each way and foregoat to draw it I was so excited. This

year there are two prizes - the National itself and the trainer's

title. Shakalakaboomboom has already ran at Aintree, in last

year's Topham, and has been prepared for the National.

everything has gone to plan, he seems to be well fresh, so we

haven't done a lot with him. Shakalakaboomboom trips off the

Grand National winner has a good ring to it too. Gradually most

things have come our way at the end of the day. You've won a Gold Cup.

Umpteen Champion Hurdles. That's the only race that's missing now.

So do you think you will hang on until you get it? Um... Yeah,

probably. It would just be nice to do it once.

And there is Nicky Henderson in the paddock. He has Lyvius running in

the next, and he's got Riverside Theatre coming up, and Burton Port

in our third race. Riverside Theatre completed the five-timer

that Conor Murphy, one of the lads in the yard, had backed as an

accumulator and won �1 million. should have been �3 million. What

an amazing story. Barry didn't know how much pressure was on him to win

that race. Oh, I think he did. It was a brilliant ride. Over the

course of the next three days we are going to be showing you

historic moments from Grand Nationals past, as chosen and told

by this man, the voice of racing, Sir Peter O'Sullivan.

1960 was the first time the race was televised is live, and the BBC

deployed 16 cameras to tell the story. As presenter, David Coleman

told the country it was a piece of television history. Things were

rather chaotic on the outside broadcast. My nerves of being in

the hot seat for the first time were amplified by a restricted view

from my commentary position and an unreleebl TV monitor. But somehow

we got through and told the story of the victory, the first clear

favourite to win for 33 years. For jockey Gerry Scott it was quite a

feat, having broken his collarbone a fortnight earlier. 25 yards to go.

Merriment is the winner of the National.

And we've got a fair few more of the memories of Sir Peter over

Sullivan to come. 1960s, JP McManus said it was the first bet he had

ever had, at nine years old. We are ready for the next race, the

four-year-old Juvenile Hurdle. A total of 11 runners here. 8 and

betting race this. Hinterland is well backed, 8s into 7. But the

National is two days away. I've had a text, if you want to bet each way

Bet Victor are going the first six places on the Grand National.

That's with Victor Chandler on Saturday.

The key form for this race comes from the Triumph Hurdle at the

Cheltenham festival. This horse was favourite. This is Grumeti. Robert

Thornton in the saddle. Finished a close third behind the winner,

Countrywide Flame, who runs in this race. Explain why Grumeti is

favourite ahead of Countrywide Flame? I don't know. He made a

mistake in the last. I just think maybe John Quinn is a higher ro

file trainer and they've latched on to this way. But Countrywide Flame

I think was a worthy winner on the day. Alan King won this race in

2007 with Catch Tammy - Katchit. Dougie is a very good pilot. This

horse has travelled to Ireland, finished third in a big novice

hurdle over there. Maybe that's why punters have been put off by this.

He looks well. This is Dodging Bullets, now with Ruby Walsh in the

saddle because Pearl Swan doesn't run. He was progressive on the flat

last year, second to Grumeti at Kempton and fourth in the Triumph

Hurdle last time. He was beaten four lengths. Do you think he could

turn that form around, it is a different course here. Flat track

will play to in horse's strengths. A good jumper and a good traveller.

Very often Cheltenham form is not fold up here at Aintree but there's

been an extra week's gap, so that trend could be broken. Sadler's

Risk was at one time favourite for the Triumph Hurdle after he won on

his hurdles debut at temp. Finished sixth. He was fancied by the team

on that occasion. A lot of people remembered that good win at Kempton.

He looked very good there. I think Hinterland is very interesting.

They think a lot of Hinterland at the Paul Nicholls's yard. He's been

compared to Le Duc. This horse I think is the one that

could be the one to take the race. A good strong type. A real chaser

for the future, this fellla. I like the look of this horse. The fact he

hasn't been to Cheltenham shouldn't harm him here. Gottany O's was

picked up by Tom Segal in the Racing Post this morning.

Disappointing in his first two starts. He's got to come back to

form, but keep on eye on Gottany O's. I'm sure he will have been a

mover in the markets. He is 16-1, a decent enough price. Let's head up

to Jim McGrath. Very interesting. Bradbury's rider

is out of the saddle. Just adjuthing the tack. Grumeti, the 5-

2 favourite. Countrywide Flame 4-1. Dodging Bullets the same place.

Sadler's Risk 9-2 and 15 -1 Hinterland. You were asking why

should Grumeti be favourite ahead of Countrywide Flame. I think he

had an interrupted preparation before Cheltenham. He stepped on a

nail I think at a crucial stage of his preparation. I'm not saying

that it cost him victory there but it couldn't have helped. He's such

a gutsy performer, Grumeti. That's him there in the maroon sleeve.

He's a real tough performer off the flat. He is a horse that can really

go close here, that's for sure. They are starting to walk in at the

two mile and half a furlong start. Gottany O's is leading them up.

They walk in very sensibly, very calmly. It won't be like this on

national day in the Grand National, I can assure you. They come towards

the starting point now. All very organised. All very calm. And there

is the starter. That's it, they are off and running. Setting off on

this two miles and half a furlong journey. Gottany O's goes on in the

early stages from Countrywide Flame. On the outside Eagle Rock. Tucked

in behind them is Beyeh. Sadler's Risk is further back in the field.

They swing around the home straight on the first occasion. Lyvius

behind. Grumeti on the inside. Bradbury is further back with

Hinterland. They wereed by Dodging Bullets, who is -- they are held

there by Dodging Bullets. In second Countrywide Flame on the nearside.

Further back in the field behind them is Bradbury in 7th or 8

position in that white cap as they continue their journey up the home

straight. Beyeh tucked in behind them in third. Out wide is Eagle

Rock. Sadler's Risk is further back in the field. Lyvius out wide. They

are followed next by Hinterland, and in the centre Bradbury.

Followed by Grumeti, who is on the inside of others. Two lengths last

is Zarzal. Six to jump. The leader is Gottany O's by a length to

country country. Out wide ser Eagle Rock. They swing past the judge now.

Back in fourth position on the inside Beyeh, into Sadler's Risk.

Half a length on the inside of Lyvius. Two lengths further back

Bradbury, from Hinterland, Dodging Bullets and tsar zafrplt heading

into the back. Three flights awaiting them. Gottany O's shows

the way. Blazing the trail here. Tempo is good. A length-and-a-

half... He's stumbled, the leader has stumbled and he's gone. Gottany

O's has broken down and the rider has dismounted immediately.

Unfortunate there he took a false step and broken down badly. They

head towards the fifth. On the outside Eagle Rock has taken up a

narrow lead from Countrywide Flame. Just behind them Lyvius in third.

There's a faller! Hinterland has gone! They continue their journey

towards flight number six is. Hinterland is on his feet and

galloping up the field. Just looking back down the track there

Noel Fehily looks as if he may be winded. Attendants are rushing over

to him. He's on his knees. They head now towards the side of the

track. Countrywide Flame shows the way from on the outside Eagle Rock.

Two way Lyvius from Sadler's Risk, two lengths then to Grumeti. A gap

to Bradbury, followed by Dodging Bullets, who hasn't picked up.

Zarzal is well back. Beyeh has gone back through the field. Heading

towards the entrance of the home straight. It is the Triumph Hurdle

winner Countrywide Flame who shows the way. Half a length to Eagle

Rock on the outside. On the outside looming up now is Lyvius for the

Henderson stable. Just in behind them is Sadler's Risk, followed by

Grumeti, who is three out and it is on the far side Countrywide Flame,

who land in the lead. Grumeti, in behind them is Eagle Rock, followed

by Sadler's Risk at the second last. Countrywide Flame got through the

top of that OK. Landed running but here's Grumeti, challenging on the

nearside. They are four or five lengths clear now. They come over

to gallop together towards the last. Grumeti on the nearside from

Countrywide Flame. They take take it together. They touchdown

together. Grumeti on the near side. Countrywide Flame on the far side.

8 lengths to Eagle Rock. It is Grumeti and Countrywide Flame who

settle down to fight it out. Grumeti showing a bit more. Grumeti

pilling it out as they come towards the line. Grumeti wins in dogged

style. Three parts of a length to Countrywide Flame. About 25 lengths

then to Sadler's Risk in third. On the outside in fourth is Eagle Rock

from Zarzal, who made up some good ground. Further back in the field

was Dodging Bullets, Lyvius, Beyeh and then Bradbury. They are the

only finishers. Alan King, the winning trainer, and choc Thornton

the winning rider on number six Grumeti, owned by the McNeill

family. Third in the triumph and today with a trouble-free run

throughout. Ridden patiently by Robert Thornton. Second is number

two, Countrywide Flame. Ran with honour, but not quite good enough.

Dougie Costello. Third number 11, Sadler's Risk, ridden by Dicky

Johnson. Fourth is number 4, Eagle Rock, James Reveley. Grumeti. What

a tougher he is. He's a horse who made... There was a little blip

earlier in his career when he fell at Newbury. But after that he's

really come along, proven himself Countrywide Flame. Grumeti getting

home from Countrywide Flame. Punters had it right, they sorted

it out. Third, Sadler's Swan at 9 - - Saddlary's Risk.

The faith of pubters rewarded there, a battling win from Grumeti beating

Countrywide Flame who's run brilliantly. Went for home a long

way out and got collared in the last sort of quarter of a furlong.

A horrible accident there for Gottany O's on the flat, not at a

hurdle. I am afraid that's bad news for them and awful day for Donald

McCain and Jason Maguire and all those involved with Gottany O's. A

fall as well for Hinterland as he was coming up to challenge. These

front two pulled a long way clear. They're two good horses. It was an

odd race, Gottany O's was not firing and when Chuck brought him

through he was tough. But Dougie brought Countrywide Flame over from

way off him, to go and challenge him. That may have helped Grumeti

because it made him challenge. Some horses if they're wide apart don't

fight as well. Together they fight. Well done to Alan King. He had a

winnerless Cheltenham but lots of placed horses. The stables are in

good form. If you were fancying West End Rocker for the Grand

National, that also trained by Alan King. We can have another look at

these two battling up the finishing strait. Countrywide Flame was a bit

awkward at the second last hurdle. That didn't help him. I am not sure

it would have made a difference if he had winged it, but who knows, in

the end it looks like a length between the two of them. The winner

by Sacki. I don't know if you notice, Dodging Bullets is bred by

Eldetori. I did know that. I am sure looking at that ground that it

is good. Yeah, and sometimes the accidents that can happen with

horses during a race, no fault. That's just within of those things.

That could have happened on the gallops at home and it's not a

fault of the ground. Those Noel, who had a fall on Hinterland.

think he was winded at the time and that was a picture of the owner.

Let's hear from the winning trainer Alan King with Ian.

We are going to have a quick word before the horse comes back. You

have made a habit of winning this race. Is that three? Yeah, I was

worried leaving and turning in, I think he was travelling well. He is

a horse that shows a lot of pace at home but don't know where he went

to today. He battled on well and that's the right horse, triumph

winner and they've a long way clear. They have and the Aintree surface,

the track would be better for him than Cheltenham? Possibly. I was

surprised he didn't travel better than he did really. He is a horse

that shows a lot of speed at home. I am still getting to know him.

Here is your winner, go and get him. Thank you very much.

Distance there were one length and 21 lengths, so so they were a long

way ahead of Sadler's Risk. His two previous winners, Alan King, Catch

It and Walk On, who raced in these colours as well, the McNeil family.

That was only three years ago, 2009. Chuck Thornton in the saddle on

that occasion. I think this horse even has more potential than those

horses. I think he is tougher. I think he is a really good

constitution. A real fighter. So, winner, Grumeti for the champion

hurdle next year with Ladbrokes, as lows as 16-1 and 14, William Hill.

The first two favourites have obliged here at the Aintree Grand

National festival. Big Buck's winning the first and Grumeti

winning the second. He is a tough horse this. He is, but interesting

to see Chuck Thornton's long hair, because he shaved it all off, had

no luck. So he has grown it and here he is in the winners'

enclosure. It's working so far. And this - the horse is being washed

down immediately the races are finished. There have been various

improvements here to the post-race care of horses. Rishi can explain

more about that. Indeed, that's right. After last

year's Grand National a number of new safety measures were

incorporated. One is this new fantastic washdown areas where the

horses are then given water to drink and also there is a spray

here, a cooling spray similar to what's used in the world of

eventing and showjumping where horses' body temperatures are

cooled down with this spray. It's not going to be needed I imagine

for the next three days because it's cool already. But you can see

the horses here. Some of the trainers saying what a great idea,

great facility. But there are also changes to the course itself as

fence which has been raised which is in keeping with all the fences

on the course. Is this a good move? I think it's a very good move.

Probably one of the best changes to raise that board. It helps riders

and horses judge their stride and I think it's a good thing.

The main point to make that a specific to the first fence is the

fact the landing area has been levelled and raised fractionally.

It's been raised a little bit. It's more level here. I don't really

think it's going to make too much difference. Speed here that gets

horses in trouble and gets them on statistically one of the most

difficult to tpherblt - 4th fence. They've lowered the fence by two

inches, it's four foot ten, is that going to make a difference? I don't

think it will make that much a difference. These These fences,

four and five, I always thought the last couple of years they look a

fair bit bigger, but they've taken a couple of inches off it. Looks

lovely fence now. It's well presented. Hopefully shouldn't

cause too many problems on Saturday. Now we are here at Becher's Brook,

it has had landing area raised, what effect is this going to have

on what is the most famous fence in the world? It's going to make it a

easier jump. You can't get away from it. The ground's been raised a

good four or five inches. The drop is not going to catch as many

horses out. But down there over in the corner there's still a

significant drop. On the inside? Yeah the inside. I can see on

Saturday more of the lads will probably be just looking towards

it's middle of the fence to be on the safe side probably.

We have seen some of the changes out on the course. There are also

some procedural changes. All the horses must pass a vet's inspection

before competing and new criteria for horses and jockeys to meet.

Richard, have there been good changes made here for you? There

have. I think one or two are good changes. I think raising of those

kick boards is sa good thing for both horse and rider. I am worried

about the race, just how much tinkering can it take? They've

changed Becher's Brook massively, it's not the fence I used to ride

over and I worry about the race now. Well, I have been joined by Mick,

another Grand National-winning jockey and Chris, advisory to

Aintree. We heard from Richard saying he is still concerned about

the quality of this race and what the changes mean to the actual

status of the Grand National. What are your thoughts? The thing is I

don't want anything to detract from the race as it is. As far as I am

concerned it is the world's greatest steeplechase, that's the

way I want it to remain. You can see why they've made changes, but

it takes away a little bit of the allure. Now you don't have to be

that brave any more, they're all going to pack together. They all

will not want to give away any ground. Chris, we chatted earlier

about how many measures Aintree and the BHA have put in place. We saw -

Gottany O's was sadly put down after that fall. There is an

element of risk that will never be taken away from the sport.

course there is. Racing is a competitive sport. Just as in any

competitive sport Formula One racing, athletics, football, which

ever sport you care to look at, there's risk attached to it. What

Aintree is absolutely passionate about, in conjunction with the BHA,

the authority that look after the regulations of the sport, they're

very, very keen to make this as safe as possible. We can identify

risks, if we can identify them we can mitigate them and make it as

safe as possible for horses to compete. And the challenge is doing

that without detracking from what Mick -- detract from what Mick

described as the allure. We want to make it a safe challenge. We were

watching the the conditions here and lots of different measures and

a lot of trainers are saying how great this particular facility is.

What are your thoughts on what you have seen? I am really pleased.

It's a very impressive structure. The fact they've a dedicated area

where the horses can come and get treated as well. What I would like

to know is when we see a horse fall outside there on the track, where

does it go because the viewers at home see the horse fall and where

does it go to get aftercare? have a fleet of horse ambulances

out there who are able to bring the horses back in a safe fashion. The

vet surgeons in the field will put bandages on or suitable support or

even administer medication so that the trip back to the course stables

is safe. We then have a team of three vets working in the stables

who will then assess that horse and treat the horse as necessary. If it

needs specialist diagnostics done we can X-ray, if it needs more or

surgery, for example, it can be transported to the University of

Liverpool Equine Hospital. One of the best facilities in the country,

if not the world. What we have here for horse and rider in terms of

safety measures is as good as there And every improvement is hugely

welcomed. Grumeti there having a good shake. Look at those ears go,

after winning the juvenile hurdle. Owned by the McNeil family. And his

wife and his daughter are there to receive the trophy. It was

presented by John Mills, the chairman of Matalan.

For the jockeys who are here over the three days it's a working day

for them, so it's very hard for them to reveal their personality

and joke around or laugh because they've serious jobs to do in there,

in terms of riding horses and up to six in the one day. There is AP

preparing for the first ride of the day on Burton Port. We thought we

would take the opportunity of asking them key questions, really

important questions to see if we could spark a little fun.

Austin Powers. Mr Bean. People say I look like him. Colin Farrell.

John Wayne. Dustin Hoffman. Brad Pitt, for obvious reasons. George

Clooney looks most like like me with the hair. Tom cruise. Rowan

Atkinson. Tom Cruise. Someone very small. Boring person I would think.

Adam, Ian Beale in EastEnders. definitely. Starring as himself.

is not short of confidence, Matt bachelor. Already his goggles down.

He is on board Carruthers in the next race. Also today on the first

day of this Festival a new initiative - a continuation of last

year, a Hall of Fame to celebrate people who have added to the

success of the Grand National. The nominations were the people of

Liverpool, John Burgess, a vet here for 38 years and Maureen, a devoted

fan. Two of them up there, John and Maureen next to him and the people

of Liverpool, everybody here from the city, recognised as well. They

were nominated by Mick Fitzgerald. The runners for the next making

their way to the paddock. It's a quality race. Here is Jim with the

Medermit, he has promised plenty over the years. Third in the

Ryanair. Nacarat, the grey, he loves bowling

along and won the race in First Chase last time. Riverside Theatre,

winner of the Ryanair. Barry Geraghty in the saddle. Roberto

Goldback, second in the Irish Hennessy last time. And What A

Friend, Ruby Walsh takes the ride remarkable this year, won at

Folkestone off 69, he's got a colourful owner. Hunt Ball. It is

right what you said about Tilt of the ring. Usually they've got

minimum Stakes up. They've all got pictures of Anthony, not the owner.

What a fantastic story, Hunt Ball. Kite win today. Only 11-2. There's

money for it. The most extraordinary horse in this race is

Hunt Ball. He has improved more than any other jumps horse ever in

training, by a total of 6 stone and 1 pound. All horses are rated and

that equals a Handicap race. This horse has gone up and up if

Handicap. Now running in the highest quality race he has ever

contested. Rear Ron Burke has the rare accolade of training and

running a festival winner with this horse. He is owned by this man,

Anthony Knot. Explain what this horse means to you and the fun

you've had this year. It is undescribable what's happened. We

started off at Folkestone and the rest is history. He's taken off.

When we went to Cheltenham, it was, well, I still can't come to grips

with it. I'm getting a bit emotional about it. It is getting

to me a little bit. I hope he doesn't fall, comes back in one

piece. We believe he can do it today. He's changed your life,

emotionally but financially as well? Yes, he has. I'm a dairy

farmer and the farming hasn't been very good. He's literally turned

the whole job around for me. only did you pick up the prize

money but you back him with big cash? I put my money where my mouth

is. We've backed him last week at 10-1. We believe he can go and do

it in style. You really think he can win this, what going from home

from a long way out? A lot of the horses today aren't going to stay.

We are going to try to take it four out and take the sting out of them

and coast home. It can't be that easy can it? We believe he can do

it. Your celebrations have been a bit superb. You got a �100 fine for

jumping on his back earlier in the year. You didn't jump on him at

Cheltenham but you were revving up the crowd. It's a pleasure. I

really enjoy it. I got a bit carried away at Wincanton but

that's what it's all about at the end of the day. Hopefully we'll

have another celebration. It doesn't matter what he does today.

We've had a whale of a time. If he wins today we are talking

about a serious Gold Cup horse for next year. Very much so. I've

backed him 50-1 for the Gold Cup next year. He's here today to see

if we can check the trip out. We believe he is going to keep the

trip today. Big credit to rear Ron Burke and the Nick. And to you

Horse number 8, Nacarat, the grey. He is a past winner of this race.

He's been in tremendous form and won at Wincanton. He won the Racing

Post Cup there. He's going greyer every year but he looks well and

fit. Another horse who looks well and fit is number 3, Diamond Harry,

who ran in the Gold Cup. He was pulled up earlier in the season. He

ran behind Kauto Star and long run. Had Hennessy 2012. He's on his toes

and is in good form. They are all looking in top form. Let's talk

about number nine, Riverside Theatre. He is owned by actor James

Nesbitt. He ran a courageous race in the Ryanair. It may have

something to do with the bounce factor. I like Burton Port. I

thought he looked very well. Certainly AP's horse could take a

bit of beating. We are going to join clarity.

One of the most recognisable colours at Aintree is this man.

This must be your favourite meeting of the year. It is. It is one of my

favourite holidays. The final finale. Burton Port, your horse, is

a high class steeplechaser. Yes. It's his third run today isn't it?

Yes. He had 400 days off through a strain on the leg. He's coming back.

He should be a lot better today. He ran a little bit flat in the middle

of the Gold Cup, which would be unusual for him. But that's what

happens with horses. A top class horse. On Saturday Ballabriggs

going for a second. Your third and his second Grand National! He is a

tight course at Aintree. Very flat. Very different to Cheltenham.

That's why the form can turn around. Medermit, who was third behind

Riverside Theatre, you were talking about Alan King, how close he got

to having a winner at the Cheltenham festival without doing

it. This is a lovely horse, run sog well. His last two runs behind

Riverside Theatre. This is a flatter track to Cheltenham. The

track is different. That could make a different result. Those are the

colours of the... Look at Carruthers in between. That's

interesting. Carruthers is wearing blinkers, not because he isn't a

genuine horse but they are worried about him losing his nerve a bit.

They've put the blinkers on to help him feel for secure. He schools at

my school. Sarah rides him twice a day, sometimes three times a day.

So he is as fit as anything. He rode such a good race in the

Hennessy. A wonderful moment. blifpbgers are kite open --

blinkers are quite open Cups. A Friend wears them because they do

want him to concentrate a little harder. He is a little like Tidal

Bay in that he doesn't always look fantastic value afterwards.

Riverside Theatre going through. They look as if they're getting

ready to make their way to the start. Let's join Jim McGrath.

Thank you, Clare. Down at the start, let's look at

the betting just as they're taking a final turn. Riverside Theatre 7-2.

Mick joining me here. And Sir Alex Ferguson. He will be cheering home

what -- What A Friend. A few Liverpool fans jeering there as

they saw his image on the big screen. Away they go for this

Betfred Bowl. Three miles and a furlong. Nacarat took them over the

first and landed in good style from Hunt Ball up there. On the far side

Carruthers and just settling behind them Medermit. They head towards

the second. An open ditch. It's Nacarat who goes to it and jumps

well, from Carruthers. Up in third place on the outside is Hunt Ball.

They come up the strait on the first occasion. Well over two

circuits to go. Burton Port in the centre. Medermit on the far side.

Behind them Diamond Harry, followed by What A Friend. They're followed

by Follow The Plan, from Roberto Goldback, and on the near side is

Riverside Theatre. All over safely. Master Of The Hall is last. Two

circuits to go. Carruthers gets through on the inside to take a

narrow lead now, from Nacarat. A length and a half to Hunt Ball,

travelling in the centre. Pace is good. On the outside Diamond Harry.

In the centre Burton Port, followed by Medermit. Followed further back

then by What A Friend on the outside of Follow The Plan. Then

Roberto Goldback, and towards the rear Riverside Theatre. Last is

Master Of The Hall. Into the back now. Heading towards fence number

four. Carruthers on the inside, draws towards it, has a good look

and got over it in spectacular style. All over safely. Nacarat

jumped second. Third then Burton Port on the outside. Half a length

further back is Hunt Ball, followed further back on the outside by

Diamond Harry. They come to the fifth. Further back is What A

Friend, from Follow The Plan, Roberto Goldback, further back then

is Riverside Theatre. Two lengths last is Master Of The Hall. Second

open ditch. Carruthers jumped it well. Lands over it in good style,

from Nacarat. In third is Medermit, followed by Burton Port. Out wide

are Hunt Ball, who is very handy as they go over the sendth. They all

jump it well. Preparing to lead the back. The pace is good, Mick.

Carruthers enjoying himself there. The first time he has had things

his own way this way. Riverside Theatre on the outside, about 7th,

Barry Geraghty having to work hard on this horse. He did at Cheltenham

but it looks like he is not that comfortable. He is on the outside.

Over the 8th. Carruthers sailed over it. Jumping extravagantly.

Last is Master Of The Hall. Carruthers on the inside, from

Nacarat and Burton Port, then Medermit on the inside rail. Hunt

Ball is very handy. Further back then is Diamond Harry. Followed by

Follow The Plan, and What A Friend. Further back in the field Riverside

Theatre. They go over the 9th. Master Of The Hall jumps really

stickily in last position. Up towards the open ditch number ten.

Carruthers on the inside who blazes the trail, with Nacarat on his

outside. On the outside joining in as well Hunt Ball, who is

appreciating this stamina test. Behind them is Medermit, followed

out wide by Diamond Harry. Burton Port is in the centre. Followed by

What A Friend and Follow The Plan on the far side. Roberto Goldback

up in the centre. Riverside Theatre given plenty of air on the near

side. They come to the 11th now. They jump that in about third or

fourth last position. Barry Geraghty getting to work on

Riverside Theatre. Not getting a response. Last is Master Of The

Hall. The alarm bells are ringing for Riverside Theatre. And ringing

very loudly as well because he goes into this bend on the outside here

and if you are not travelling here at Aintree it's very difficult to

make up any ground because the horses don't come back to you. We

can see Barry Geraghty, you know he won't give up. Master Of The Hall

just nipped past him travelling well. Medermit has been eye-

catching too. Into the back now. Diamond Harry Diamond Harry has

lost ground and dropped back through the field. Might be pulled

up as they go - in fact he has been pulled up. The leaders over the

12th. A mistake by Roberto Goldback, very lucky to survive that. Down

the back and Nacarat has slipped the field, gone three in front now

of Carruthers. Then Medermit on the inside and Riverside Theatre has

been pulled up. Never travelling well at all, has been pulled up now.

They head down the back. So, heading towards the second last

open ditch. Nacarat by three lengths, Medermit, on the outside

Hunt Ball running a great race and jumped up into second now. Behind

them is Follow The Plan. Followed by Carruthers, dropping back

through the field. They come to five out. Burton Port is there out

wide. A mistake there by What A Friend. Roberto Goldback is not

jumping well. They prepare to leave the back now with four left to jump.

The leader is Nacarat on the inside by three lengths. Hunt Ball is

looming up now. Followed by Burton Port. Behind them Medermit. Three

lengths to Follow The Plan. Followed by Carruthers and further

back in the field as they come towards the crossed fence is

Carruthers, four out. Roberto Goldback got right into that. Hunt

Ball is looming up. The dream is still alive. Hunt Ball travelling

well. Tom crept into this race. Three left to jump now. They

straighten up for home. Nacarat in the centre. Hunt Ball on the near

side the red cap coming into it. Followed by Follow The Plan. A gap

then to Medermit. Burton Port. And raising an effort. They come to the

last ditch, two out. Nacarat and Hunt Ball. Hunt Ball on the near

side. Nacarat a clear leader over it. Followed then by Follow The

Plan. Nacarat in front. Follow The Plan. The underrated Irish

challenger, Follow The Plan takes it up clearly with one left to jump.

Follow The Plan has gone three or four in front. Burton Port coming

late. Follow The Plan comes towards it, he jumped well. He has away

from it four lengths in front. Burton Port goes into second.

Followed by Hunt Ball. Up towards the line it's Follow The Plan. He

is going to go on and win well for Tom Tom Doyle. Second Burton Port,

close third, Hunt Ball far side, Medermit near side. Followed then

by Nacarat, further back is Master Of The Hall. Then What A Friend,

followed by Roberto Goldback. Last to finish is Carruthers.

Well, Follow The Plan, Tom Doyle. Trained by Oliver McKiernan. He has

won the money. When this horse won a grade one victory last season, a

lot of people saying a lucky win, but he he has proven himself high-

class today. Great for Tom and Oliver. A small stable. Tom is not

a bit-part jockey, but he is a journeyman. He was in Ireland for a

long time and came to England, tried his luck and went back to

Ireland and I am delighted for him. He took it up I think two out there.

Suppose you were worried when you saw AP on Burton Port, wondering

did he go too early? He definitely didn't. The winning post came in

time. You can see the celebration here. For these guys to ride

winners at this Festival, this is a huge prize. It's a huge race and

definitely a trophy that will have pride of place on his mantelpiece.

Let's check the placings: Follow The Plan a 50-1 winner of

the Betfred Bowl. As they turned into the strait here

at Aintree it looked as if Hunt Ball was going well enough to make

the dream come true for Anthony but he started to get tired and this

horse Follow The Plan was absolutely swinging for Tom Doyle

and came through like he had just been turbo-boosted. Bear in mind,

Follow The Plan was third behind Nacarat last year and he is going

to come up alongside the grey horse and almost make it look as if he

has joined him in the race, Richard. A lovely run as well. Nacarat going

a little bit right. Tom has a lovely ride. What a great race Hunt

Ball has run. AP's horse has stayed on very well, Burton Port. So has

Medermit. Makes up a lot of ground. You can see how much Nacarat fades

in the closing stages and Medermit is going to come past him. Follow

The Plan in front, sees a real long one there. Given a real good ride

into the last there. The horse is brave. Just pushed him out to the

line and AP's horse has got tired near the post funny sort of race

really. He certainly has the trip. You can see the cheekpieces there,

not as well as blinkers. And toyy - - Anthony there watching, believing

it might happen. But they will be thrilled with finishing third in

the first grade one and you can see there he now knows that he has got

a horse of real quality in the yard. This is the horse who has collected

the spoils and greeted with almost silence by the punters because none

of them picked him, Jim. A worthy winner just the same. Follow The

Plan, Tom Doyle, run out a very comfortable winner. Riverside

Theatre pulled up, never travelling. As Mick was saying, never

travelling at all. The other one who was pulled up, Diamond Harry.

Pulled up a long way out and both of them were struggling a long way

from home. This winner, Follow The Plan, always going well. Tom Doyle

is coming back here in triumph after winning the big grade one

here today, the bed--- Betfred Bowl Chase. Ladies and gentlemen, he was

a 50-1 shot but he has belied those odds, jumped superbly and stayed on

well to take the Betfred Bowl, please show your appreciation for

Follow The Plan, owned by Oliver McKiernan - trained by Oliver and

ridden by Tom Doyle. So, a great triumph for Ireland. Ireland have

the biggest representation in Saturday's Grand National that I

think they've had in modern times. Something like 18 runners. 50-1

Follow The Plan. Well, has his run come to an end? 85lb he had gone up

in the ratings, which is staggering for any horse to improve that much.

Hunt Ball when he loomed up there he was just starting to feel it,

wasn't he, in the home strait? Starting to struggle a bit. It was

obvious that just in this higher grade, although he has run

creditably, he's been found out. There might be improvement in it,

he has had a long season and he is certainly well up to the standard,

that's for sure. Here is Tom Doyle. Let's look at him. Hands and heels

now. He has put the whip down. He is over the last, I presume that is.

Let's see him, there he is. Looks at the screen now. He knows he is

well clear. He has just to keep this horse going, and he's done

that really well. Really good ride and a great win for Ireland.

It is a great win for Ireland and the trainer is on the other side of

Follow The Plan. Tom Doyle and connections having photos taken and

I am going to pop around the other side, don't want to disturb the

photo, of course, I don't even want to be in the photo! There we go.

Let's grab a word with Oliver. Photos are still taking place. This

is a big moment for the team. 50-1, let's find out what Oliver -

can I grab you for a quick word. Many congratulations, the punters

didn't think he had a massive chance. What did you think going

into the race? Well, I mean, we followed the same plan as last year.

We came here before, more or less said we might do the same again

this year. That was it. I tell now, the ground drying out a lot helped

our horse. He is not a horse that goes that well on soft ground. So,

the race then probably materialised out of it or whatever, that you

know, he is not a horse that can hit the front too soon and he needs

to be aiming at something all the way. So, in general, you know, we

are very happy. Could you imagine how well he travelled up to what

was a high quality race? He had about 18lbs to make up? The way the

horse was working at home and that, we had no real reason to believe he

wouldn't be in with a shout and that's part of the reason he was

here. But you have to say also early on in the race he was sticky

at the fences, I just wasn't sure. Tom will tell you more about that.

But Tom gave him a superb ride anyway and we are delighted.

won the Guinness Gold Cup, where does this victory rank. Guinness

Gold Cup is ten minutes down the road. It's a home track and that.

But we are delighted and delighted that he was fit to do it here today.

Well done. A word with your jockey now. A few sticky jumps, were you

at the first but after the first he jumped great, travelled really well.

I couldn't believe how well he was travelling across the bottom. I

probably ended up being in front too soon, but I had to drive on. He

jumped the last well. He's been a very good horse to me. I think

that's three grade ones he's won now. He probably hasn't got the

credit he deserves really. Could you believe how well you were going

when you turned into the straight? No. I couldn't believe how easy he

was finding it in jumping. From there you are just trying not to do

anything wrong and do the simple things right. Is it great to be

back in England with a big race winner? Yes, it is. I was here for

nine years and have great friends. It is lovely to come back and ride

is going back to Betfred. Definitely a bookies' race. This is

not the face of a loser, because Anthony Knott, the owner of Hunt

Ball, you are thrilled? Yes, he ran his little heart out. He came round

the home bend and we thought he was going to take off it is a grade one

at the end of the day. He's seriously done us proud. You got a

bit excited didn't you? Yes. I just thought he was going to do it. He

had quite a few races and he will come back a good, strong horse next

year. And full steam ahead for the Gold Cup next year? Yes. Nick says

he got the trip alright. Where he couldn't get a breather into him

like on a flat track, but no problem with the trip. So full

steam ahead for that. I'm so pleased for you. Thank you. Thank

you. That was Anthony Knot, the owner of Hunt Ball. We'll be

bringing you wonderful memories of the Grand National. Here is the

second of them. The story of Red Rum is the

ultimate fairy-tale. A triumph of sheer brilliance over adversity.

Rummy had had three different trainers before ending up at Ginger

McCain's Southport yard.. He had bad feet and was leading an

uncomfortable life, but twist of fate led him to the man who trained

on the sands of Southport beach. The transformation was remarkable.

What happened next was pure Aintree magic. And so began his Grand

National love affair. COMMENTATOR: At the line Red Rum has just

scotched it. Red Rum is the winner. Be by ta time 1977 came around, Red

Rum's legend was assured, but what followed catapulted him beyond his

already iconic state us to become part of the fabric of the British

nation. The hairs stood up on the back of my neck and I called out

words that are as true now as they were on the famous day.

COMMENTATOR: The 12 -year-old Red Rum being precede only by loose

horses, Chased by Church town Boy. Red Rum wins the Grand National!

Ginger McCain, may I congratulate you. What do you think of it snow

think it's bloody marvellous. Super. Hear, hear, Ginger. The

extraordinary record of Red Rum, who won the race three times and

was second in it twice. He would have come here a sixth year but a

minute injury prevented him from running. He lived a long and very

happy life and opened shopping centres and was made guest

appearances, turned the lights on at Blackpool Tower, and his grave

is here at the winning line at Aintree. We lost Ginger in

September last year. Earlier today a wust was -- bust was unveiled of

Ginger McCain. His widow asked for it to be placed next to the

winners' enclosure. It captures the character of the man. Part of the

Red Rum legend, you finish second the first year Red Rum won in 1973.

A word about that statue. It is one-and-a-half lifetime sizes which

is what Ginger was. Red Rum and Ginger came along at a time when

Aintree needed saving. He injected so much passion and character. And

a great trainer. Amberleigh House and Ballabriggs, who lines up on

Saturday. Ginger is greatly missed but will always be remembered at

Aintree. We are going to have a another look at the jockeys. They

don't eat a lot of food but they love to talk about it. Steak and

chips. Curry. Rare streak. -- steak. Uncle Sam's burger bar in Brighton.

Roast chicken and all the trimmings. Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

Steak and chips. Steak and chips. Mushrooms, tomatoes, ononrings and

peas. Ruby Walsh not in the best of form necessarily when he was

recording that. Before the fox-hunt fox-hunt, a - before the fox-hunt

fox-hunt fox-hunt, a report about Frankel. He's picked up a

superficial injury. Henry Cecil is saying he's such an extravagant

mover at home he may have knocked himself. We will monitor that and

give you news as we hear it. Frankel unbeaten so far in nine

races. An absolute machine. This next race is strictly forage

We are here in the jockeys' radio. These lads are getting ready for

one of the highlights of their season. This is the amateurs Grand

National novices. They are all ready to go. Young James is 17. He

is running on Gwanako. Sam Paint ising on The Polomoche.

Launde has had a couple of golds here hasn't he? Yes, and this is

third time lucky. Are you looking forward to it or nervous? Divine

intervention would be great but I'm looking forward to it. The best of

Smith's Fox Hunters' Chase. Cloudy Lane. This is the amateur's

Grand National. Cloudy Lane is a genuine horse, full of connection.

I reform think Cloudy Lane, there'll be a big cheer here.

Cloudy Lane is a really good price at 6-1.

There's Cloudy Lane, who started favourite for the Grand National a

few years ago. How does he look to you today? He is looking well Rishi.

He finished sixth in the Cheltenham. He has prove himself over the

fences hasn't he, finishing sixth and eighth. One of the Irish

contenders is Boxer Georg from Willie Mullins' stable.

A horse who ran pretty well. Ran a crack race. Only beaten three

quarters of a length. Patrick rode him. He is Chase clipped. Hopefully

he'll put in another good run today. There are a few others coming

around. Anything that took your eye? Having compared them with

horses in the last race, there are one or two who aren't quite as hard

trained as they may be. I want to look at horse number 19, Roulez

Cool, with Kona Coast cone on board. - with Waley-Cohen on board.

He's got a good record. Placed in the Grand National last year.

24, The Polomoche. He's now trained by Marcus toly. This horse used to

be at Nicky's as. He's looking well. Perhaps carrying a bit of condition,

but he's been running well. I hope he handles these fence and put in a

nice run. Let's look at the grey. Number 21. Silver Adonis, a past

winner of this. He didn't run as well last year. He finished 7th

last year. Won it the year before. He's had better preparation this

year. Certainly looking well. One to consider. Just one playing up

here, horse number two, this is Bow School. He backed into a couple of

the other runners. He's had to be dismounted land be led out on to

the course. Looking a bit on his it's. He beat Silver Adonis at

Wetherby in May. He won a Handicap Hurdle to put him right for this.

But he is certainly on his toes. are going to join Clare with Donald

McCain. At least you have a horse you know likes the course. He's

been around two or three times. He's my first good horse. I'm

panicking a bit well, but he's been running well all year. The place is

in terrific condition. Desperately unfortunate that your horse,

Gottany O's, suffered a fatal injury. A crying shame, he did it

on the bend, on the flat. It is an unfortunate circumstances of the

job we do. The owners are devastated. They've come here for a

fantastic day and look what happened. He has not suffered. It's

been dealt. It is nobody's fault. Part of dealing with livestock I'm

afraid. You had to deal with the ups and downs. Cloudy Lane could

pick up the day hugely for you here. He's got an outstanding chance

half. If he can get out over the first three or four and be in the

first half dozen he could run an maidsing horse. He's won he some

fantastic races. I hope he is is home in one piece. All good for

Ballabriggs on Saturday? Yes. Looking forward to it. Thank you

Donald. Thank you clarity. for the John Smith's Fox Hunters'

Chase. They've just over a circuit of the Grand National course ahead

of them. The Chair is the third fence. Then they make their way

past the grand and out into the country. All the way down over

Becher's Brook the other famous fences.

Began there making his way out. James, only 17 years old, riding

fences and they are different to what you would normally be jumping,

the normal dark browned brush fences. These with all the green

spruce. The spruce spruce does kick out, so you can jump the fence low

and still kick out the top and get the other side. You can see in the

background Sam Waley Cohen, riding that horse for his father who

trains it and My Way De Solzen, used to be a cracking horse and has

now gone hunter chasing. My Way De Solzen, a very good horse.

Then lost his way and rejuvenated really by the hunter chase game.

This is an interesting and difficult test this for horses

because they go pretty fast down to the first fence. And Rishi, who

have you got? Marcus with me, Clare, a guy who

used to ride for Nicky Henderson and now training in his own right.

This horse has always had ability. My ex-boss and the head lad, Corky,

he has always thought a lot of him. He had a bad accident, broke his

pelvis and we had him to recoup rate, it was whether he would ever

come back to racing. Luckily, he has. The owner has been good to me

and let me have him for pointing and hunter chasing, because it was

a lower grade. He's come back and thriving. He's done well for us.

And Marcus, why the switch from being a jockey to training, because

you were a successful jockey, you were doing very well? It was the

first time I walked that course today and thought they were small.

Typical! Exactly, I think the timing was right. I had a - I

wouldn't have changed what I did as a jockey and had a great career for

Nicky. This was always something I wanted to do and when the

opportunity came up I grabbed it and it's gone well. The Polomoche

going to win? Safe around, I would like to see him there or

Pitman, have you got the old buzz down there with them? It's getting

very excited. You can see in the star the orange colours, Lizzie

Kelly riding for her mum. The way the riders are all grouping as they

are, shows they're going to go off very fast. Now, what was amazing

was that Sam Waly-Coen was going to run in the National, the horse

jumped the white line by the start on the way down so he should have

no trouble. The thing to tell you is the third fence is The Chair and

the sun is right into their eyes going that way. It's not serious,

but it's certainly going to make them think. The way they're all

trotting here means it's going to be very, very fast indeed. Clare,

down here I can assure you they may be amateurs, there's no money for

them, but they are keen, Clare. We have our full team of
