-We just had to do the best we could.

-They were focused on Ott

-at the time, it was Ott's car.

-That's all M-Sport

-were concerned about.

-Seb wasn't in the frame at the time.

-I remember driving the car

-for the first time.

-I thought,

-"I can do something with this."

-I could get the car

-to like me straight away...

-..over the first two days.

-Conditions were difficult...

-..and the car was very new.

-It was a great feeling.

-At the time,

-I felt it was very fast.

-By now, it just feels normal!

-After all the preparation,

-a new World Rally Championship

-January 2017

-Monte Carlo Rally

-I remember Phil and I looking

-at the car for the first time.

-It looked like a beast,

-it looked like a monster.

-It looked like a real racing car.

-It was so low in Monte Carlo,

-it was a proper racing car.

-You're nervous at the start

-of a season wondering...

-..if they're as dangerous

-as the Group B cars.

-Certainly,

-the speed has increased again.

-Somewhere in the back

-of your mind you're thinking...

-.."Oof, where will this end?"

-As the year panned out...

-..I think it's been better

-than anyone expected.

-Elfyn lived in that little house

-over there back then.

-We lived in the garage up there.

-He was fond of visiting us so that

-he could have a drive in the car.

-Even when he was small,

-he'd sit on my lap.

-He'd enjoy turning

-the steering wheel.

-I didn't have to teach him much.

-It was very easy.

-I think he was about seven,

-eight years old.

-There came a time

-when he could reach the clutch.

-He used the clutch

-and the handbrake...

-..and got familiar with using them.

-We didn't have to teach him

-that much, it came quickly to him.

-It was different with his sister,

-she was smaller.

-It was so much easier with Elfyn.

-Could you have imagined

-back then...?

-We didn't think so at the time.

-We thought he could make something

-of it because of his father.

-And his grandfather

-and great-grandfather.

-That's true enough.

-They all liked

-putting their foot down!

-They'd go to school,

-Elfyn and Delyth...

-..they attended school in Dinas.

-They'd join us at the garage

-for their tea.

-It didn't matter what car he was in

-as long as he was behind the wheel.

-He was ready to go.

-He competed in motorbike trials.

-I used to take him

-to different places on Sundays.

-He competed in different places

-on the motorbike.

-Here's a picture of him as a baby.

-Wearing a pink boiler suit.

-Anything with a steering wheel

-and he was away.

-On the motorbike.

-That's the three-wheeler Yamaha 50.

-He'd ride the three-wheeler

-in that field.

-The field behind the house

-and up the hill.

-Taid bought the motorbike

-for us all.

-Myself and my cousin.

-How many of us were there?

-Five altogether.

-The idea behind the three-wheeler...

-..was to give us all some enjoyment.

-My eldest cousin, Geraint...

-..he was a lot older then us.

-I remember Taid explaining to us,

-"You go round with Geraint...

-"..and he'll show you how to go."

-Ger and I went around the lake...

-..and he'd give me a go then.

-I went halfway around the lake.

-I was turning the steering but

-couldn't avoid going into the lake!

-The first outing on a three-wheeler

-didn't quite go to plan.

-Taid got me interested in bikes.

-He took me and pushed me

-at the time.

-It's something

-I still enjoy to this day.

-A lot of great memories

-of growing up on the bikes.

-Right, we're ready to go.

-Just waiting for the big man now.

-You must admit, you're competitive

-in everything you do.

-Just going up there,

-I was following you.

-You wanted to be first.

-You were trying to splash me

-in the water.

-I wasn't going to let you beat me!

-Then again, you have to be No.1.

-Everything you do,

-you try and do your best.

-You try, yes,

-but this is a bit of fun.

-You want to be there first!

-You've got the sweet spot with Dan.

-You've changed co-drivers

-over the years.

-Dan's back in the car

-and it's working out for you.

-I'd worked with Dan before

-from 2013 until 2015.

-We worked well together.

-We've learnt together.

-He was more experienced than me

-when we got together...

-..but not so much

-on a World Championship level.

-It's been a learning curve

-for both of us.

-That's not just about doing the job

-but handling the job too.

-There's a lot more

-than just driving or co-driving.

-We've been on

-a special journey together.

-I think we've got a great balance...

-..between being friends

-and getting the job done.

-I think the respect is mutual.

-It's great having him in the car.

-With the connection we have, we

-don't really have to say anything.

-We discuss the approach together...

-..in terms of how much

-we'll push or not.

-We don't really have to say anything

-- we know what to do.

-There's no need to talk about it.

-At this level,

-you're hopeful moments will happen.

-Unless you're in a stage and you get

-two or three consecutive moments...

-..that's when he needs to say...

-.."Look, we've been close

-a couple of times...

-"..this isn't normal."

-He can sense, sometimes better than

-me, if things aren't going our way.

-One thing I never said was,

-"Come on, chum, hurry up."

-I never said that to your father.

-It's probably the same with you.

-He's admitted himself,

-he's never had to say "come on."

-The relationship is working well.

-Good morning, Gwyndaf Evans Motors.

-I've been with Elfyn since...

-..well, almost ten years.

-Maybe if you asked Elfyn,

-he wouldn't remember.

-Yes, about ten years now.

-Since he was rallying

-in the little Fiesta ST.

-I'd been with him before that too.

-That's when he was in the Micra.

-That's when I was in college.

-That didn't last very long.

-We've just moved

-into our own house in Dolgellau.

-We had the keys during the Rally GB,

-on the Thursday in 2015.

-Elfyn wasn't home

-so I picked up the keys.

-I walked into the house and realised

-we couldn't move straight in.

-I didn't want to tell Elfyn

-until he finished the rally.

-He came home

-and we made the decision.

-We pulled the roof down,

-pulled the heating system out...

-..knocked some walls down

-and renovated it completely.

-If he's had a good rally,

-it's nice to have him home.

-If he's had a bad rally,

-his spirits aren't great.

-He's not easy

-to live with sometimes.

-The internet's crashed.

-It's always nice to come home.

-I'm constantly travelling but

-there's nowhere I want to be more...

-..than at home.

-I worked here full-time

-until the end of 2012.

-That's when I moved up to M-Sport.

-These days, I'm lucky if I can

-fit in one or two days a month.

-I try to do one or two days to

-keep in touch with what's going on.

-There's not much time

-to do more than that.

-Why is there a thermostat

-beside the till?

-Where?

-What's it doing there?

-What's this doing here?

-Working with Elfyn isn't something

-I like doing, to be honest.

-We clash at work sometimes.

-I prefer it

-when Elfyn is away rallying.

-Where's the Biro?

-Biro?

-Will you give it back?

-When he's been home

-for a week and a half...

-..I'm ready for him

-to go away again.

-I prefer to be at home

-when Elfyn is rallying.

-I get nervous when he's competing.

-When I'm home, I watch the phone

-and the live texts.

-That tells me

-if he's through safely.

-I can keep busy at home.

-I'll go off with my friends

-or I'm working all day.

-I prefer being at home.

-The business supported me and

-allowed me to have my first ride...

-..before I went professional.

-Then, of course,

-I can support the business now.

-I'm trying to do as much as I can.

-Personally, I'm not here

-often enough to do a lot.

-I'm grateful for the work

-the team does here.

-A lot of what I've taught Elfyn...

-..is the work and the effort

-in the business.

-I've given him a lot of my savings.

-But Elfyn has been able

-to help himself considerably.

-He should be praised for that.

-He's got to where he is...

-..by spending the least amount that

-anyone has in the past 10 years.

-That's testament to his work.

-I was a sensitive person myself

-from a respect point of view.

-It had to be mutual.

-I have respect for his skill

-and the effort he's put in...

-..and he has to respect the family

-and the help he's been given.

-He should never forget that.

-If you don't put 100%

-into something...

-..you don't have a chance of

-making it to the top of your sport.

-That's true of everyone there.

-They give it 100%.

-No less.

-April 2017

-Rally Argentina

-We hadn't had a great start

-to the season in terms of results.

-The times on the stage

-weren't too bad...

-..but we'd struggled

-to post any results at that point.

-After 341kms of racing,

-Elfyn was in the lead.

-Elfyn has led from Stage 1.

-Only 16kms to go.

-Could this be his first victory?

-He'd done an exceptional job

-on the first day.

-That gave him the confidence

-for the future...

-..to be the fastest on each stage.

-You take so much from that.

-This is the moment,

-the final stage, the Power Stage...

-..on the slopes of El Condor,

-above the clouds.

-What's it to be, Elfyn?

-We had a problem with the brakes.

-No-one was sure

-what the problem was.

-The Sunday morning service

-was very frantic.

-The boys were trying to change

-a cylinder in the car.

-It was a huge job in 15 minutes but

-they got the brakes back on the car.

-We went up El Condor and I could

-feel the pedal was still spongy.

-With the advice of the team,

-we bled the brakes.

-There was still a fault in

-the system and we lost the brakes...

-..at the start of the steepest

-downhill stage of the rally.

-The brakes were only just biting

-at the end of the travel.

-That wasn't a great experience

-at all.

-At that point, I was quite sure

-it wasn't going to happen.

-We lost grip and we clipped a bridge

-on the way down.

-That cost us a few seconds.

-Unfortunately, we lost the rally

-by 0.7 seconds.

-I cried.

-I was on my own.

-I was so gutted for him.

-I know how hard he works

-for these rallies.

-Just to lose it by that much,

-it was gutting.

-Dolgellau

-Mile End Service Station

-Naturally, not every rally

-will go to plan in every respect.

-He seems to be dealing well

-with things.

-He learns something

-from every rally.

-The disappointment starts

-as a great disappointment...

-..but looking back at it now...

-..it might have helped

-to bring Elfyn out of his shell...

-..and made him stronger.

-We had him live on the stage

-and we had the rally radio on.

-We were on Whatsapp with the crews

-watching the splits come through.

-The next thing we knew,

-the on-board came on.

-"He's hit the bridge. No,

-he's still going, he's still going."

-We knew he'd lost some time.

-We know there's always been

-something special about him.

-I remember when he had

-a fastest stage time at Monte...

-..earlier in the year,

-we knew things would go well.

-He seems busy training...

-..and he's always preparing

-for the next rally.

-He's always been

-an industrious lad...

-..whatever he's done.

-He's not scared of hard work...

-..but he puts the extra work in to

-get fitter and focused on rallying.

-July 2017

-Rally Finland

-Such pace, it's frightening.

-Elfyn hasn't put a wheel

-out of place.

-For me, the performance in Finland

-was up there.

-I know how hard it is

-to post fast times in Finland.

-A young lad from Wales...

-..going to Finland...

-..and mixing it

-with the best in the world...

-..and finishing second in Finland...

-..that's not really on!

-That has to be special.

-Where does this rank in your career?

-Where do you put second in Finland?

-Maybe not as high as Argentina,

-that was a strong performance...

-..but it's up there with the best.

-Second place in Finland

-for Elfyn Evans.

-His first win

-is undoubtedly within reach.

-It's one thing

-to drive in your own land.

-Going to Finland and doing it...

-..in the fastest, most difficult and

-most technical rally, is special.

-Well, naturally as a mother...

-..I'm nervous when he's in a rally.

-We tend to go out

-to watch the rallies...

-..as often as we can.

-We then know the time he's posting

-on that stage.

-If he comes through

-with the right time, it's great.

-If he's taking his time

-to come through...

-..that's when my insides

-start to churn.

-Do you have any idea

-how hard it is for your parents...

-..sitting at home

-watching the splits?

-No!

-When you don't pass through

-on the splits...

-..the first thing they think about

-is what's happened?

-I think both of them

-naturally understand the sport...

-..because of Dad's career.

-The cars are safer

-than they've ever been.

-It's very rare

-for anything to go wrong.

-I've pumped it into Elfyn's head

-from the very first day...

-..that it's dangerous.

-He has to realise that.

-He should make everything

-a calculated risk.

-No-one's forcing him to do this.

-He has to want to do it.

-You're always hoping that he's not

-in a big accident or gets hurt.

-We'll have to back him as we've done

-until now if it happens to him...

-..or any of the others.

-A lot of the other drivers

-are friends of ours.

-They're all aware of the dangers.

-They choose to do it.

-Part of that is the thrill.

-A difficult year.

-The worst thing that happened that

-year was the accident in Donegal.

-On one stage, one of

-the spectators crossed the road...

-..in front of Elfyn and his

-co-driver Gareth 'Jaffa' Roberts.

-We couldn't have done a thing.

-If I'd lost control of the car...

-..it could have been

-a very different story.

-I took comfort from the fact

-that we were on a straight road...

-..but it wasn't

-a pleasant situation.

-You know,

-for me and for Jaff at the time...

-..Jaff was more taken aback

-than I was with the incident.

-I remember we competed

-in another rally...

-..and the feeling returned

-quite quickly...

-..but it was certainly

-not a nice experience.

-June 2012

-Targa Florio Rally - Sicily

-Gareth 'Jaffa' Roberts died

-following a horrific crash

-while co-

-

-ig Breen

-Jaffa had only co-driven

-with me for a year...

-..but he was one of my best friends.

-He was certainly someone I'd

-gelled with. We had a lot of fun.

-He moved on to co-drive with Craig

-and they had a lot of success.

-Unfortunately, when that happens,

-it was a huge shock for everyone.

-I think that was a time

-I asked the question many times.

-Do I want to carry on with this?

-It really was... when it's so

-personal to you, it makes you think.

-The risks were clear before then.

-The risks weren't highlighted

-more or less after it happened.

-That was my conclusion. Nothing

-from that side had changed for me.

-I still wanted to carry on.

-Every morning I'm home,

-I'm here at 7.00am.

-I do an hour or two of training

-with Dave in the morning.

-We do a range of different things.

-Today we're working

-on boxing skills.

-Agility and the quickness

-of his hand response.

-He's good.

-He works hard

-to keep on top of things.

-He's good. I can push him

-more than most people.

-Early birds.

-Four times a week now.

-He's a drama queen

-but he does what I tell him to do.

-One. Two.

-Roll under.

-Look up, don't look down.

-It gives me pleasure

-to inflict pain on Elfyn!

-Come on.

-Hold it.

-I love it when you can get him

-that tired. It's great.

-In his fitness class, I can

-push him and push him and push him.

-You know when you've pushed him

-to the point it's hurting...

-..because he doesn't say anything.

-It's so important to keep fit.

-There's no one thing to target.

-It's not just running, it's not

-just keeping sharp or being strong.

-It's about being

-the all-round package.

-Make sure the body's strong and

-avoid injuries to the back and neck.

-You want to be sharp and alert.

-You need the endurance

-to keep going from 6.00am to 8.00pm.

-Because I've trained in some ways

-since an early age...

-..my heart is a little bit lazy

-when I'm not doing anything.

-When I have a resting ECG,

-it doesn't show up as normal.

-That's what the sheet asks for

-on the licence application.

-"Is the ECG normal?"

-I've seen a specialist

-and they're not concerned about it.

-It's just because I'm a fit person.

-When I was on the machine,

-it was down to 36 at one point...

-..when I was doing nothing

-for a long time.

-I think the average was around 40.

-The lowest I've seen on a machine

-is 36.

-He'd follow me on the bike

-when I went running.

-I drummed that into his head

-very early.

-When he wanted to start

-rallying himself...

-..he had to train

-right from the start...

-..and show commitment to the sport.

-We kept a chart in the gym...

-..and he wrote on the calendar

-each time he was there...

-..so that I could see

-that he'd been regularly.

-Fair play, he was very dedicated.

-By now, I'm only a hindrance to him

-when he trains.

-Usually, I'll come home from work

-and he'll go for a run.

-I'll get supper ready

-for when he comes home.

-Elfyn likes healthy food...

-..when he's been training.

-Supper tonight

-is pasta, salmon and veg.

-He trains every morning and night.

-Elfyn's fussy. He doesn't

-like his food overcooked.

-Otherwise he'll complain.

-He's terrible.

-The front door.

-Since when have you lived here?

-We moved in last January.

-When we started

-..I'd just got the sack

-in some ways.

-That wasn't great

-on the financial side.

-I only had two rallies in 2016

-and the British Championships.

-It looked like I had time

-on my hands.

-Then eight rallies

-turned into 16 rallies.

-All of a sudden,

-I had no time at all.

-When I found out there was a chance

-of a full contract in 2017...

-..I wanted to finish the house.

-I didn't want distractions

-at that time.

-We ended up having a lot of help

-to finish the house.

-There are still a lot of fiddles

-left but we're not far away.

-You don't like clutter.

-I don't like clutter at all.

-Are you slightly OCD?

-A little, maybe.

-Yes.

-But not with clothes in the bedroom.

-There's no OCD there!

-You overcooked these

-by about half an hour.

-These are overcooked

-Especially on Saturday night,

-there was a think fog.

-It could have been easy to

-play it safe and lose two minutes.

-You had to do your best because

-others were taking risks...

-..to make up the time.

-I'd been in that position myself

-in the past.

-This time, it was about trying

-to balance risk and safety.

-You can never be entirely safe

-in the fog.

-I just had to go with my instinct.

-Sunday.

-The gap to Sebastien Ogier

-I'm very happy for him

-because I know this is his dream.

-Being here, on the final day today.

-It's special. I remember him driving

-..but today, the Dolgellau lad

-will realise his great dream.

-than in his backyard...

-Through the trees.

-He's heading for glory,

-the crowds await.

-The horns are blaring.

-The fireworks are being lit.

-Elfyn Evans is on top of the world.

-Thousands of people

-are waiting to congratulate him.

-The first Welshman to win a rally

-in the World Championship.

-It wasn't until I'd crossed the line

-that the emotions came through.

-It took until the podium

-..for it all to start sinking in.

-The journey back to Llandudno,

-the feeling on the ramp at the end.

-That was the best feeling

-of the weekend.

-Elfyn did it...

-..to keep his head and dominate...

-..there's no doubt

-that in Rally GB...

-..he contributed to that success.

-we've achieved great things.

-I will take him very seriously.

-You must walk together as teammates

-to make the team stronger.

-When you're out there on the stage,

-the best have to win.

-Then we are all enemies

-in this moment.

-The sky's the limit, I'd say.

-He has one of the best seats

-..out of 15 available seats.

-To be a teammate

-of the World Champion...

-..for me, that's beneficial.

-I know Elfyn,

-he'll learn a lot from him...

-..and absorb

-all the information from him.

-He'll take that as a positive,

-not a negative.

-Now that he's won the Rally GB,

-it'll give him more confidence.

-He now knows

-that he can win the rally.

-I hope it gives him

-more confidence for the future.

-There's a buzz about it.

-What he's doing

-for British rallying is incredible.

-Looking back to 2006,

-when he drove his first rally...

-..that's a long time ago.

-He's been through good times

-and tough times over the years.

-He's showing everyone

-what we all saw from him years ago.

-The future looks very bright

-a huge change in him.

-it's made him hungrier...

-ever since I met him first...

-..at the top he wanted to be.

-That's what he's worked for.

-2018 is going to be

-an interesting year for us.

-It'll be the first time

-since 2015...

-..that we've been

-the same package as everyone else.

-There's no hiding place anymore.

-It was easy

-if things didn't work out...

-to the finish line...

-..because you knew

-you weren't competitive.

-That's not the case now.

-We really are aiming

-as high as we can.

-We have the world's best benchmark

-right beside us.
