Welcome to the stadium at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the | :00:41. | :00:47.
second test between England and New Zealand. One of the sport's biggest | :00:48. | :00:55.
fans, Colin Welland, who passed away this week said Rugby League provides | :00:56. | :01:02.
a cultural adrenaline. It is a physical manifestation of our rules | :01:03. | :01:07.
of life. Comradeship, honest endeavour, and an allegiance to | :01:08. | :01:08.
Fairplay. Welcome back. MUSIC: "Have Yourself A Merry Little | :01:09. | :01:50.
Christmas" An early Christmas present. We will | :01:51. | :02:18.
talk about the game in a moment but we will talk about Sam Burgess first | :02:19. | :02:25.
of all. Did you get goose bumps watching that? Yes. It is exciting | :02:26. | :02:31.
for the game. He is a genuine superstar and to get him back in | :02:32. | :02:36.
Rugby League is very good. One of my pet hates is wasting talent and I | :02:37. | :02:40.
think he is back in the game that will allow him to maximise his | :02:41. | :02:46.
potential. The only thing is he needs to get his 80s perm here do. | :02:47. | :02:52.
Has he wasted his talent? Rugby League is a difficult game for his | :02:53. | :02:57.
talent to shine. He needs to have the ball in his hands 20 times a | :02:58. | :03:02.
game. Rugby League is a better sport to allow him to do that. You talk to | :03:03. | :03:07.
him a lot. How difficult has he found the last few weeks? Any big | :03:08. | :03:13.
decision would be difficult but he has made the right decision for him | :03:14. | :03:17.
and his family. I heard rumours from all sorts of corners. There has been | :03:18. | :03:24.
a lot of hysteria. He is back in the game that reveres him, that loves | :03:25. | :03:28.
him, that wanting to do well. The courts are very different and it | :03:29. | :03:34.
would have taken time to get up to speed -- the sports. Was he given | :03:35. | :03:41.
enough time? You have a foot in rugby union and Rugby League. What | :03:42. | :03:47.
is your overriding emotion? I care for both games, believe it or not. | :03:48. | :03:55.
There are a minority who want people to feel. A lot of the people don't | :03:56. | :04:03.
know much about what is going on in that position. For me, it has been a | :04:04. | :04:08.
shambles and I'm very sad, everybody has been writing about it. If they | :04:09. | :04:14.
did not think he was right to play, that was their decision. I went back | :04:15. | :04:18.
to rugby union after seven years in Rugby League and I did not think I | :04:19. | :04:22.
was good enough but yet I played for Wales, I would have not turned that | :04:23. | :04:28.
down. For me, the balance, the selection was wrong. When Sam was on | :04:29. | :04:37.
the field for England they were winning. If he had stayed on they | :04:38. | :04:41.
would have won. A lot has been written about it and a lot of | :04:42. | :04:48.
rubbish. What is disappointing for all of us is he has not made the | :04:49. | :04:52.
stellar impact we thought he would but that takes time. I believe, I | :04:53. | :05:00.
wanted England to win the Rugby Union World Cup, I wanted everybody | :05:01. | :05:05.
to do well. The scapegoat attitude from some quarters has been | :05:06. | :05:11.
embarrassing, we all want to do well in English sport and get over the | :05:12. | :05:18.
line. The fact he has made this decision now is a good decision. I | :05:19. | :05:29.
did not have a choice to go back. If I did not make it then I was gone, I | :05:30. | :05:37.
was history. You pick Sam to do a job. His job is to get over that | :05:38. | :05:41.
gain line. You pick him in a position where he plays for his | :05:42. | :05:48.
club, with Jonathan Joseph at 13. What happens, the selection goes | :05:49. | :05:53.
wrong, when I went to Rugby League, they knew what job I needed to do. I | :05:54. | :06:03.
knew my role. It is not his fault. England have just come out to warm | :06:04. | :06:08.
up find us. Hopefully next year we will be seeing others in an England | :06:09. | :06:15.
shirt. If we want this sport to grow and more people to watch about it -- | :06:16. | :06:21.
watch it and have more articles in the paper, does Rugby League suffer | :06:22. | :06:27.
through Sam Burgess deciding to leave after a short period of time? | :06:28. | :06:34.
I don't think you can replace that responsibility on his shoulders. | :06:35. | :06:39.
There are a number of reasons why he has not had success but that is not | :06:40. | :06:45.
one of them. All the people Colin him a quitter, saying he has gone | :06:46. | :06:49.
back early, they don't even know him. If you look at his story, he is | :06:50. | :06:55.
not a quitter, he is a great bloke. What he's done is he has said, I am | :06:56. | :07:01.
Robert I will put my faith in the coaches and the people who have | :07:02. | :07:08.
signed me and put me in the right areas and that has not worked. Sam | :07:09. | :07:18.
wanted to be the world's best, he wanted to come to rugby union. To | :07:19. | :07:25.
me, the backdrop to all this is something that makes him recognise, | :07:26. | :07:29.
I might be better off back in Australia, I might be better off | :07:30. | :07:35.
back in my own game. Let me read you a quote. He says, I say good | :07:36. | :07:46.
riddance, there is a decent, honourable England coach, he decided | :07:47. | :07:58.
he might fancy a crack at rugby union but then did not fancy it at | :07:59. | :08:04.
all. I don't agree with that, ultimately it is Stuart Lancaster's | :08:05. | :08:10.
job, and his neck is on the block. If he does not think a player is | :08:11. | :08:13.
good enough he does not pick him. Kyle Eastmond comes from Rugby | :08:14. | :08:19.
League. The balance and selection was wrong. Sam Burgess came to this | :08:20. | :08:24.
rugby to play for England in the World Cup. If they thought he was | :08:25. | :08:30.
ready then they picked him. If they did not think he was ready then they | :08:31. | :08:35.
do not pick him. Stuart Lancaster is a decent bloke. If you had switched | :08:36. | :08:47.
codes after a year do you think you would be ready to play International | :08:48. | :08:53.
Rugby Board and, and if you did not feel ready would you say it? I would | :08:54. | :09:00.
not have been ready, I don't have the talent he has. What this has | :09:01. | :09:10.
shown us is even though I have met people with great values there is an | :09:11. | :09:13.
element of snobbery that comes through that game, and you can tell | :09:14. | :09:17.
from that article, they look down on the sport of Rugby League. You wrote | :09:18. | :09:27.
your eyes at me, so go on. I get it. Rugby League fans think I am not a | :09:28. | :09:30.
Rugby League player because I was born and bred in Wales, I played | :09:31. | :09:34.
union and I worked on the union game. When he came into Rugby | :09:35. | :09:41.
League, we wanted to kill him because they had taken all our money | :09:42. | :09:45.
and livelihoods and we spent every day of the week thinking, we are | :09:46. | :09:51.
playing against this... Were you jealous? Not jealous, it was a crazy | :09:52. | :09:57.
element of, we want him to fail because he is not that good. But he | :09:58. | :10:05.
was that good. All the players would have wanted Santa be a success. -- | :10:06. | :10:12.
would have wanted Sam Burgess to be a success. That was not his fault. | :10:13. | :10:20.
You don't think there was any envy? I would be disappointed if there | :10:21. | :10:26.
were rugby union players who did not want him to succeed. Ultimately I | :10:27. | :10:33.
would hope they would want him to be successful and raise the profile of | :10:34. | :10:38.
the game, as he would have done for rugby union. They have moulded him | :10:39. | :10:52.
and he does a job for New Zealand. You become revered after that. | :10:53. | :10:58.
Becomes revered and accepted. Sam Burgess had the talent to be that | :10:59. | :11:05.
revered. It would not surprise me if he went through to the 2017 World | :11:06. | :11:11.
Cup and tried to come back for the rugby union World Cup to prove | :11:12. | :11:17.
people wrong. You can get in touch because this will obviously be a | :11:18. | :11:25.
huge part of the forum later on. We are talking to Steve McNamara | :11:26. | :11:28.
earlier and he said he has had a conversation with Sam Burgess this | :11:29. | :11:33.
morning. He said it is the first time he has spoken to him. He will | :11:34. | :11:38.
not be back for this series. Getting away from the controversy and from | :11:39. | :11:42.
the sport that we cover, it is exciting for this England team. I am | :11:43. | :12:01.
really excited about the four nations next year and the prospect | :12:02. | :12:04.
in the World Cup the next year after that. A quick word of where we are. | :12:05. | :12:18.
We will focus on the match now. Jonathan and Brian will be part of | :12:19. | :12:21.
the commentary team. Jamie will be with me as well. If you cannot play | :12:22. | :12:26.
well in a stadium like this then you cannot play well anywhere. You would | :12:27. | :12:31.
thrive on this, wouldn't you? Absolutely. I played 12 years for my | :12:32. | :12:35.
country and never got to play in a stadium like this. They are going to | :12:36. | :12:43.
twitch today coming in here. You have had to twitch today coming in | :12:44. | :12:49.
here. You have had when I came to Rugby League I played in Anfield, | :12:50. | :12:54.
Old Trafford, Wembley. These are the stadium is that when you grow up as | :12:55. | :12:59.
a kid, irrespective of the sport, you want to play in these venues. | :13:00. | :13:09.
Thank you. We will get underway at 2:30pm. | :13:10. | :13:27.
Suddenly a chance to run for the line, and score! | :13:28. | :13:38.
Those England players will be arriving at the Queen Elizabeth | :13:39. | :14:08.
Olympic Park, buoyed by that second-half performance. Fans will | :14:09. | :14:11.
be arriving hoping that England can go 2-0 up. They need to win today to | :14:12. | :14:19.
level at before we head to Wigan next Saturday. It is the same | :14:20. | :14:30.
starting 13 and the same bench for England. New Zealand are a little | :14:31. | :14:36.
more interesting. We were not expecting the same starting 13 for | :14:37. | :14:44.
them. They have added a bit of experience to the bench. That is the | :14:45. | :14:55.
England players going on with their warm up routine. We will find out | :14:56. | :14:59.
how they will play this afternoon. For 30 minutes last week it was a | :15:00. | :15:05.
bit of arrest, New Zealand were getting on and then Steve McNamara | :15:06. | :15:13.
played the super substitute. Came off the bench and scored two Mac | :15:14. | :15:18.
tries. I want to focus on two players. One of them is Tom Burgess. | :15:19. | :15:22.
He is a man mountain. When he carried the ball he is a man | :15:23. | :15:29.
mountain. Another player to look at, coming to the other side of the | :15:30. | :15:34.
play, James Roby. He is an 80 minute player but they've got him coming | :15:35. | :15:38.
off the bench. That means he has got a little bit more energy. That means | :15:39. | :15:41.
they can do the exciting things really well, leave people in bits | :15:42. | :15:47.
and pieces. Just going to see whether I can get a quick word with | :15:48. | :15:52.
Sean O'Loughlin. Today has been a big competition for you guys to see | :15:53. | :15:55.
if you can seal of the series against New Zealand. We had a good | :15:56. | :16:00.
start last week. Got the series off to a good start. Both teams | :16:01. | :16:09.
improving today. Does it make sense for you to go with the same 17? Just | :16:10. | :16:18.
about. I would like to have seen Ben Webster fit into these. He treads | :16:19. | :16:24.
that line nice and thinly along there. Let's go to John Wilkins. How | :16:25. | :16:41.
are they going to play today? I think they played fantastically well | :16:42. | :16:47.
in the middle of the field. All the big men in this side have got a lot | :16:48. | :16:57.
to do. Looking to stop the likes of James Graham, Chris Hill, who got | :16:58. | :17:02.
that England team going. A couple of really important guys for this New | :17:03. | :17:10.
Zealand side. Issac Luke, a powerful guy. But this guy here today, a | :17:11. | :17:19.
young guy coming into the team. There is a lot of pressure on this | :17:20. | :17:24.
young man. He needs to control this side, give them leadership, game | :17:25. | :17:28.
management, but kick the ball and take pressure. A big favour this man | :17:29. | :17:35.
and the big day for New Zealand. Thank you very much. They have been | :17:36. | :17:44.
taking in the sights of the city courtesy of their guide, New | :17:45. | :17:51.
Zealand. Ahead of the must win second test, they are taking some | :17:52. | :17:55.
time out to see the sights of London. You've got one of the most | :17:56. | :18:03.
interesting hairstyles in Rugby League, how long have you been | :18:04. | :18:11.
growing that? Since I was about 16. As the captain, had you got your own | :18:12. | :18:18.
sweet? I do! Who is the worst to list you've got? It would be Jordan | :18:19. | :18:42.
Kahu, he has got the selfie stick. Are you enjoying looking at the | :18:43. | :18:47.
sights of London? Myself, I don't normally leave my room. You would | :18:48. | :18:55.
have been a young teenager watching some of these guys play. Now you've | :18:56. | :18:59.
got to come in and direct them around. I used to be quiet but the | :19:00. | :19:16.
boys have made me feel welcome. A lot of talk has been made about the | :19:17. | :19:22.
England bench. Is that something you guys are highlighting? Maybe we | :19:23. | :19:30.
lacked it a little bit but credit to them, they came on and played some | :19:31. | :19:36.
good rugby. No excuses, obviously this is a must win game for us. We | :19:37. | :19:42.
know the game plan now and we just need to knuckle down this week and | :19:43. | :19:45.
nail it on Saturday. Just dropped the lads off, next | :19:46. | :20:05.
stop, the Olympic Stadium. If you believe he actually drove that bus | :20:06. | :20:19.
off, you will believe anything. If we look at New Zealand, did they | :20:20. | :20:23.
look a little bit undercooked last week? They had a good game under the | :20:24. | :20:32.
belt but they did not show enough urgency. That is game management. | :20:33. | :20:40.
That allowed England to play exceptionally well. A lot of that | :20:41. | :20:51.
manages to... You look at this, you have got guys coming back onside. | :20:52. | :20:56.
The reason you would do that with urgency is to get some shape. They | :20:57. | :21:01.
did not do that. A lot of people on the wrong side of the ball. This is | :21:02. | :21:06.
New Zealand chasing the ball, they needed to create opportunities and | :21:07. | :21:10.
this is a prime example. You needed to throw a blanket over this team. | :21:11. | :21:14.
If I am in the England team I am thinking, let's be aggressive and | :21:15. | :21:21.
thwart them. You can see that there is very little options, and that | :21:22. | :21:30.
allows England to really press. Is it mental fatigue? Physical fatigue? | :21:31. | :21:40.
I think it is physical. What we saw, they were chasing the game. | :21:41. | :21:48.
What that does, it draws the energy out, the structure falls apart, it | :21:49. | :22:00.
does not happen. He is tired, he loses his tackle technique, then it | :22:01. | :22:03.
is a penalty. What are you doing again? It is a vicious cycle. Those | :22:04. | :22:17.
are the problems. Those were lacking in New Zealand. If one of those bits | :22:18. | :22:22.
fall down, it gets into a vicious cycle. I think we need to give | :22:23. | :22:27.
England credit because they absolutely nailed all three of those | :22:28. | :22:31.
in the second half. They were very disciplined, I don't think they gave | :22:32. | :22:35.
away a penalty, many errors, the game management was superb. We don't | :22:36. | :22:42.
have an Ingush referee, that will change things. There is a slight | :22:43. | :22:50.
difference. -- English referee. The word has been coming out of the New | :22:51. | :22:54.
Zealand camp that they were not used to having only one referee. Normally | :22:55. | :23:00.
they have two referees. I think you will find, New Zealand are going to | :23:01. | :23:07.
throw numbers into defence and test this one referee. I'm not going to | :23:08. | :23:14.
let you say anymore because, much as I could listen to you talk all | :23:15. | :23:17.
afternoon I want to hear from both coaches. You have changed your | :23:18. | :23:23.
half-backs pairing, what is the thinking behind that? With this week | :23:24. | :23:33.
I thought it was a benefit for us, I just thought by the end of the week, | :23:34. | :23:40.
he would be a better fit for us. You stuck with the same 13, you must be | :23:41. | :23:43.
pleased with what they did last week. I think we are all aware that | :23:44. | :23:48.
there are areas for improvement and when you know there are areas for | :23:49. | :23:51.
improvement you've got everything, your team, your bench, you're | :23:52. | :23:57.
practising. We have decided to go with the same 17 that started last | :23:58. | :24:01.
week. What are the areas you have been looking at? We never got a grip | :24:02. | :24:07.
on the game from the beginning, we put ourselves on the back foot, | :24:08. | :24:13.
credit to us, we found a way back but would not want to do that again | :24:14. | :24:19.
this week. No second chances after today. If you lose this, the Test | :24:20. | :24:23.
series has gone. Has that changed the mindset? From our point of view | :24:24. | :24:28.
it is always about taking the best performance to the stadium, that is | :24:29. | :24:31.
the challenge and the full quiz for us today. We will deal with the | :24:32. | :24:38.
results after that. -- the focus. We feel we can give ourselves a good | :24:39. | :24:45.
chance today. Has there been an element of keeping feet on the | :24:46. | :24:49.
ground? They understand exactly what a tough game it was last week. Six | :24:50. | :24:53.
days later we got to go again, we got to be very good to win this | :24:54. | :25:04.
game. The big men got a lot of credit last week. They were very | :25:05. | :25:11.
smart. It allowed them to continue the late drive and make | :25:12. | :25:15.
opportunities. You see here, he carries the ball. Look at the | :25:16. | :25:23.
shape. Subtle difference between the sides. That was my position. It is | :25:24. | :25:34.
down to the work at the back. England have that in abundance. | :25:35. | :25:42.
Those guys relied on support play. Reload is quickly. Should not be | :25:43. | :25:50.
scoring this try. Make no mistake. That is bad defence. | :25:51. | :25:59.
That is the key area they need to sort out. They need to retain the | :26:00. | :26:13.
ball. It is a mindset, you are never as tired as you think you are. You | :26:14. | :26:19.
can show that urgency to get back. If they don't get that right it is | :26:20. | :26:25.
all over. They need to show that mindset. You can talk yourself into | :26:26. | :26:31.
being tired in big games. Energy is infectious. The atmosphere will be | :26:32. | :26:40.
infectious here. That man has been cheerleading the crowd. He took off | :26:41. | :26:53.
his England Rugby League shirt. It is coming. Another T-shirt | :26:54. | :26:59.
underneath. We all breathe a sigh of relief. The crowd will be getting | :27:00. | :27:10.
behind both sets of teams. Credit to Steve McNamara for knowing where to | :27:11. | :27:17.
make the interchange. In the first half that might have been forced by | :27:18. | :27:20.
the lack of intensity but you've got to give him credit for his half-time | :27:21. | :27:23.
team talk because they looked different in the second half. I | :27:24. | :27:40.
thought James Roby was exceptional. I think it was a smart move. Stephen | :27:41. | :27:51.
Tierney knows what Kodi Nikorima can offer. What New Zealand lacked last | :27:52. | :27:56.
week was a kicking game and I think he might be the answer to that. Do | :27:57. | :28:09.
you expect a different mentality? They showed their dominance this | :28:10. | :28:17.
year. I tell you what, they got run ragged last week. What they will be | :28:18. | :28:22.
looking to do is prove that they can play a full 80 minutes. I think they | :28:23. | :28:34.
will be confrontational. England forwards need to start better. One | :28:35. | :28:40.
of the issues with that comes you've got Tom Burgess, he has got no fear. | :28:41. | :28:44.
He will run over the top of anything. | :28:45. | :28:51.
I thought the game management was pure last week. -- bad last week. | :28:52. | :29:00.
The game management, they front-loaded all their energy into | :29:01. | :29:06.
getting in chasing, and the England side got off to a great start. The | :29:07. | :29:13.
start is so important. International rugby, it is difficult to come back. | :29:14. | :29:17.
England did that and finished very strongly. This is a big day for | :29:18. | :29:27.
England. This is a moment to seize the day. This could allow them to | :29:28. | :29:33.
win a series of the first time since 2007. I am feeling really lonely | :29:34. | :29:38.
next to these two because obviously I want New Zealand to win. I hate to | :29:39. | :29:46.
break it to you but I am not neutral either. Here come the teams. | :29:47. | :29:57.
Please welcome New Zealand and England. | :29:58. | :30:11.
As the teams come out, somewhere through the smoke and the fireworks, | :30:12. | :30:23.
delivering the match ball is a member of the city of the Regiment, | :30:24. | :30:30.
a single leg amputee who was injured during his second tour of Janus | :30:31. | :30:38.
than, serving in the Army bomb disposal team. -- second tour of | :30:39. | :30:43.
Afghanistan. Here she comes, Stewart Gemmill. | :30:44. | :30:47.
-- here he comes. Delivering the match ball, please welcome Staff | :30:48. | :31:00.
Sergeant Stewart Gemmill of the city of the Regiment. He is a single leg | :31:01. | :31:07.
amputee who was injured during his second tour of Afghanistan whilst | :31:08. | :31:11.
serving with the Army bomb disposal team. | :31:12. | :31:30.
Could you please stand for the Last Post to remember the men and women | :31:31. | :31:42.
he gave their lives in two world wars, and conflicts in Afghanistan | :31:43. | :31:45.
and around the world. We would like to respect the sad passing of | :31:46. | :31:53.
Chris, a grade one match official taken before he could fill his | :31:54. | :34:25.
potential. APPLAUSE. | :34:26. | :34:34.
Thank you ladies and gentlemen, could we ask you to remain standing | :34:35. | :34:43.
for the national anthems. In a moment the national anthem of | :34:44. | :34:46.
England, but first the national anthem of New Zealand. | :34:47. | :35:01.
# E Ihow? Atua, O ng? iwi m?tou r? | :35:02. | :35:04.
# ?ta whakarangona; Me aroha noa | :35:05. | :35:07.
# Kia hua ko te pai; Kia tau t? atawhai; | :35:08. | :35:11.
# Manaakitia mai Aotearoa | :35:12. | :35:20.
# God of Nations at Thy feet, In the bonds of love we meet, | :35:21. | :35:39.
# Hear our voices, we entreat, God defend our free land. | :35:40. | :35:41.
# Guard Pacific's triple star From the shafts of strife and war, | :35:42. | :35:44.
# Make her praises heard afar, God defend New Zealand. # | :35:45. | :35:53.
# May the goodness bear fruit; May your kindness come; | :35:54. | :35:58.
# Please give protection to Aotearoa | :35:59. | :35:59.
# God of Nations at Thy feet, In the bonds of love we meet, | :36:00. | :36:03.
# Hear our voices, we entreat, God defend our free land. | :36:04. | :36:05.
# Guard Pacific's triple star From the shafts of strife and war, | :36:06. | :36:21.
# Make her praises heard afar, God defend New Zealand. # | :36:22. | :36:43.
# Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, | :36:44. | :37:35.
Time for the second test between England and New Zealand, from the | :37:36. | :38:34.
stadium at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Bryan Noble, Jonathan | :38:35. | :38:42.
Davies and Dave Woods. COMMENTATOR: Wonderful reflection in | :38:43. | :38:44.
that minute's silence for those fallen heroes who have saved Britain | :38:45. | :38:50.
and the Commonwealth. Also the rugby league referee Chris Leva Barra who | :38:51. | :38:57.
sadly passed away this week, and his daughter, at the tragically young | :38:58. | :39:04.
age of 27. Also Gary Carter, a Sun newspaper reporter in hospital this | :39:05. | :39:17.
week in a coma. A tragic accident. We are willing him to get better. | :39:18. | :39:26.
Nose shortage of pomp and ceremony, and emotion in the build-up of these | :39:27. | :40:20.
two tests. -- no shortage. The game at Hull came with its light show, | :40:21. | :40:24.
today reflection. It should be a terrific game today. Exactly the | :40:25. | :40:29.
same for England as one week ago, no temptation to tinker from Steve | :40:30. | :40:37.
McNamara. Look at the England bench, some real impact to come off there. | :40:38. | :40:44.
A couple of tries last week from them. Late change for New Zealand. | :40:45. | :40:53.
Kodi Nikorima coming in. His first start in international. Lewis Brown | :40:54. | :40:59.
and Alex Glenn give the Kiwis extra experience on the bench. Change of | :41:00. | :41:05.
referee, the Australian Gerard sat and the man in the middle today. We | :41:06. | :41:09.
will see what different interpretation he puts on what | :41:10. | :41:16.
should be a super game. A venue that has given British sport lots special | :41:17. | :41:19.
memories over the last couple of years. The English rugby league team | :41:20. | :41:26.
looking to join that we have what would be a series winning victory | :41:27. | :41:30.
today. The Kiwis get the first touch of the ball. The first Ryback, met | :41:31. | :41:37.
by that voracious English pack. All about the start for the English. We | :41:38. | :41:45.
will see how physical they can be with the defensive line. They | :41:46. | :41:52.
started slowly last week. They all realise that, that is why they went | :41:53. | :41:58.
behind. A very impressive start is what we are looking for. As you | :41:59. | :42:02.
said, the bench made a hell of an impact last week. That is what they | :42:03. | :42:16.
will be looking for this week. Kodi Nikorima, he had Jon Wilkin 's in | :42:17. | :42:20.
the warm up telling him how much pressure he would be under. | :42:21. | :42:25.
Immediately England lining up to bring it three. Ryan Hall. The Kiwis | :42:26. | :42:31.
will make the start of this game physical. Issac Luke kicking | :42:32. | :42:36.
brilliantly out of dummy half to give the full with the chance to | :42:37. | :42:40.
chase and show their physical play. It is important where England play | :42:41. | :42:47.
the game. Cannot see the Kiwis changing their style with the | :42:48. | :42:51.
off-load, the errors in the Kiwi half will be key. Midway inside | :42:52. | :42:58.
their own half. Hodgson is away at dummy half. James Graham lingering | :42:59. | :43:07.
alongside. Hardaker. Williams gets the kick away. This will fall into | :43:08. | :43:12.
English hands. Still the sixth tackle. No Kiwi touch. Very | :43:13. | :43:19.
intelligent kick. Little kick off does not bounce the English way. If | :43:20. | :43:27.
he could have kicked about into in goal, there was a chance. Creating | :43:28. | :43:33.
nothing from the bouncing ball. Whitehead gets it back, especially | :43:34. | :43:39.
to kick, it was on. Good vision. Nowhere else to go, lovely kick. He | :43:40. | :43:44.
could have caught that, more time than he realised. You two guys are | :43:45. | :43:52.
investing more time and space than he had. He did well to get anything | :43:53. | :43:57.
on the ball. Penalty New Zealand. Chance for them to settle their | :43:58. | :44:01.
nerves. All or nothing as far as the Kiwis are concerned. They lose, it | :44:02. | :44:11.
is series over. There is Luke, putting it out of play. Restarting | :44:12. | :44:17.
on the halfway line. The first drive by Kevin Proctor. Now Issac Luke | :44:18. | :44:25.
multiply quickly. The rain has stopped, by the way. Horrendous | :44:26. | :44:30.
morning in London. The rain hammering down, the wind howling. It | :44:31. | :44:35.
has settled for the kick-off of the match. Off-loaded temps. Harris was | :44:36. | :44:44.
waiting, did not come his way. -- off-load attempted. It is the fourth | :44:45. | :44:52.
tackle. Remember they made a fast start last week, the Kiwis. Looking | :44:53. | :44:56.
for something similar here. Pushing and pushing. Moa held up, not the | :44:57. | :45:07.
best pass from Blair. Hardaker taking no chances, putting it away | :45:08. | :45:11.
for a drop out underneath the sticks. The start New Zealand | :45:12. | :45:18.
wanted, good build-up, the kick batted away. Hardaker had to | :45:19. | :45:24.
play-the-ball. Six more plays for the New Zealanders. I know the Kiwis | :45:25. | :45:33.
got the ball from a penalty, discipline will be crucial today. | :45:34. | :45:39.
The atmosphere will be interesting. It lacked a little bit at Hull last | :45:40. | :45:44.
week. Again today, not on fire at the moment. Needs England to make a | :45:45. | :45:49.
strong start to get this majority English crowd into their voices. New | :45:50. | :45:59.
Zealand have camp at the moment. Luke swiftly moving it left. Jesse | :46:00. | :46:04.
Bromwich that the head down, driving forward. Into England. Moa has | :46:05. | :46:14.
missed. That was very well read. Brilliant from Kallum Watkins. Still | :46:15. | :46:20.
a position to work from for the Kiwis. Luke is standing in waiting | :46:21. | :46:31.
behind. Last tackle coming up. Kodi Nikorima putting the kick into the | :46:32. | :46:36.
in goal area will stop this time England get the tap back on the 20. | :46:37. | :46:40.
Not the best kick, little bit too much on it. EasyJet. England will be | :46:41. | :46:47.
relieved to take it out. Interesting character Kodi Nikorima, he has a | :46:48. | :46:55.
younger brother, who has signed for the Sydney Roosters, and it looks | :46:56. | :47:00.
like rusty play for Australia! They qualify for both countries, he's a | :47:01. | :47:04.
proud Kiwi commit his brother and Aussie! -- and his brother is an | :47:05. | :47:20.
Aussie! England get the penalty. Too much anyone. What influence is the | :47:21. | :47:25.
referee having so far? He will definitely try and keep the ruck | :47:26. | :47:32.
clean. Adam Blair slowing it down, trying to buy team Daly time for the | :47:33. | :47:43.
Kiwis to get back. The Kiwis conceding a lot of penalties last | :47:44. | :47:47.
week. England looking to build this one this week. Into the 20. | :47:48. | :47:57.
Hodgson, standing in waiting. Hell, they drive forward. Excellent work | :47:58. | :48:04.
by the England starting front row. A little push after the tackle was | :48:05. | :48:08.
completed. The Kiwis should know. One thing in the Australian Rugby | :48:09. | :48:14.
league, they do play-the-ball a lot quicker. They should know that, the | :48:15. | :48:20.
Kiwis. Yes, you can play the referee little bit. He has been consistent | :48:21. | :48:25.
from the start. A conscious decision from the Kiwis, not leaving too many | :48:26. | :48:32.
people on the floor. Moa not letting him play-the-ball. They may be | :48:33. | :48:42.
prepared to this -- prepared to accept another six. Interesting. | :48:43. | :48:49.
First time England have the attacking opportunity, they have | :48:50. | :48:56.
gone for the two points. New Zealand conceded seven penalties last week, | :48:57. | :49:01.
England only conceding two. Already the penalty can begin to rack up. | :49:02. | :49:06.
Part parcel of why they the game. They were giving the penalties away | :49:07. | :49:10.
in the second half. Also fumbling the ball. Not controlling it as well | :49:11. | :49:25.
as they should. Knocking on. Roddick putting boot to ball, England have | :49:26. | :49:30.
the early lead. Interesting reaction from the crowd when England elected | :49:31. | :49:35.
to kick. They were hoping they were going to run the ball. Conservative | :49:36. | :49:40.
ploy at this stage, is it the better approach? I think it is so important | :49:41. | :49:46.
for the English Rugby league that they win this test. On the back of | :49:47. | :49:50.
last week, when they have a dominant second-half, they need to clinch the | :49:51. | :49:56.
series. 2007, eight years ago since England last won series, against the | :49:57. | :50:05.
Kiwis, that was 3-0. A for what might happen in 2015? Whitehead, | :50:06. | :50:12.
looking to build forward again. Only three players survive from that | :50:13. | :50:59.
period Roby, over -- Sean O'Loughlin and Williams. We need to see some | :51:00. | :51:07.
movement, for me. It is mourning this library than Olympic Stadium. | :51:08. | :51:17.
-- it is more of an English library. They have come over, not much | :51:18. | :51:20.
gametime, the advantage is with England. They are scampering | :51:21. | :51:29.
forward, this is a good carry. But not in the end. He has had it | :51:30. | :51:35.
stolen, the referee decides, from a distance. Jason Nightingale is a | :51:36. | :51:41.
good player, nobody talks about him. Brilliant things in the back of the | :51:42. | :51:45.
field. Practically winning them the four nations last year. Great | :51:46. | :51:52.
player. Ball out of play for the tap restart for New Zealand. Getting | :51:53. | :51:57.
closer again. Here is Harris, the big fella. Luke, 3 to his left, goes | :51:58. | :52:08.
right, down the middle. Surging, trying to get the arm in. Whitehead | :52:09. | :52:13.
making sure he cannot get the off-load away. A little step, reach. | :52:14. | :52:19.
The English defence is desperate, just about good enough. Nikorima, | :52:20. | :52:29.
has detect the high ball. John Bateman holds onto the tackle. Good | :52:30. | :52:35.
play, they numbered up. Back to the middle they surge. Keeping it alive, | :52:36. | :52:44.
flooding along the line. Touched by another English and, in the shape of | :52:45. | :52:47.
Burgess. Another set of six for New Zealand. Burgess' intervention | :52:48. | :52:54.
preventing the try scoring pass. That is where they are dangerous, | :52:55. | :52:57.
the little off-load, creating the extra man. Very good defence by | :52:58. | :53:02.
Kallum Watkins to get back onto his man. | :53:03. | :53:08.
Fingertips taking it away from Nightingale. Joe Burgess, not from | :53:09. | :53:20.
that family, of which so much publicity seems to have swelled in | :53:21. | :53:24.
this last week month. Nikorima, cross the line. Nikorima in a dummy | :53:25. | :53:37.
half. Jesse Bromwich, big surge. He is a handful. He has been wrapping | :53:38. | :53:50.
it up for Melbourne in the NRL. Trying to run into the gap. He | :53:51. | :53:56.
received it may have been there. " he. Penalty for New Zealand. -- | :53:57. | :54:06.
might have been there," he. They have had a view sets, yes, going for | :54:07. | :54:16.
the two points. Scratch the chin for Stephen Kearney, the New Zealand | :54:17. | :54:23.
coach. Hoping his side can level things up there. With 30 minutes | :54:24. | :54:31.
played, very nearly. Issac Luke, the man who will take this penalty | :54:32. | :54:39.
attempt. It needs firing up. It needs stroking by something. A | :54:40. | :54:41.
little bit flat. He is off to Auckland, to join the | :54:42. | :54:55.
New Zealand Warriors. After a very successful spell with Souths. He has | :54:56. | :55:04.
had his disciplinary issues. He levels things up, all square with 13 | :55:05. | :55:14.
and a half minutes played. Not a real pattern emerging as of yet. | :55:15. | :55:21.
Nobody on top. The forwards, maybe territory, the Kiwis Javier. All | :55:22. | :55:25.
about the discipline, that will be key today. They are just feeling | :55:26. | :55:32.
each other out, still. We may see that for another ten, 20 minutes. | :55:33. | :55:36.
Both teams so conscious about getting a good start, frightened to | :55:37. | :55:43.
express themselves. Here we go with the restart. It is sent high by | :55:44. | :55:49.
Hardaker, good kick as well. Have them guessing. Nikorima catching it | :55:50. | :55:58.
at the end. Brilliant kick. One thing I would like to see, targeting | :55:59. | :56:03.
one of the forwards. The half-backs, they will have a better chance of | :56:04. | :56:08.
carrying Daly catching. Ie saying the forwards cannot catch? No, but | :56:09. | :56:16.
not as well as the half-backs. Good off-load by Adam Blair. Here is | :56:17. | :56:24.
Jesse Bromwich. Out to Proctor. That is what they will do, they will | :56:25. | :56:28.
off-load, that is why it is important if England can keep them | :56:29. | :56:33.
in their own half, they will off-load, and look for the mistakes. | :56:34. | :56:48.
The kick downfield by Peta Hiku, safely fielded. Pushback, by the | :56:49. | :56:57.
arriving reinforcements of New Zealand defenders. Tony's down the | :56:58. | :57:09.
touchline, keeping an eye on things. How conscious were you keeping a | :57:10. | :57:13.
good start, not giving New Zealand a good start in this game? Always | :57:14. | :57:18.
important to get a good start, get our forwards Kevin, kicking off the | :57:19. | :57:22.
back of it. Not kicking as well as we would like. It is about kicking | :57:23. | :57:27.
long when the weather is like this, completing your sets you can put New | :57:28. | :57:32.
Zealand on the back foot, standing a chance of winning. Watson's Chase, | :57:33. | :57:41.
involved again. He will go off. There is Matty Smith, who we just | :57:42. | :57:45.
heard from. Almost lost by the Kiwis. Lovely little flick. Off they | :57:46. | :57:53.
go again. Bateman is up there, good spotting. Out he comes. Mistake. | :57:54. | :58:01.
Jesse Bromwich has lost it. Sharp pick-up by Watson, looking to get | :58:02. | :58:05.
Whitehead going forward immediately. England were patient, staying up | :58:06. | :58:10.
only off-loads. At some stage they will get some ball. Jesse Bromwich, | :58:11. | :58:16.
trying to get the ball back, ricocheting off an England player. | :58:17. | :58:21.
They get position. England encroaching inside New Zealand | :58:22. | :58:26.
territory. Sean O'Loughlin, with the tough stuff down the middle. Here is | :58:27. | :58:32.
Graham. Back it goes to Williams. Farrell coming on. Hammering it in. | :58:33. | :58:40.
The situation is set from England to work from. Hill goes forward again. | :58:41. | :58:47.
Final tackle coming up in this play. I will claim. Over kick. -- Plume | :58:48. | :58:57.
I will claim. Over kick. --Plume Plume Sean O'Loughlin. | :58:58. | :59:06.
Again, the defence doing extremely well. The speed is good. That is | :59:07. | :59:15.
probably dominating at the moment, that is why it is Elizabeth flat. | :59:16. | :59:20.
The flow is not working for the Kiwis because of that. Both defences | :59:21. | :59:25.
more up to speed than last week, that is the key. We saw a few soft | :59:26. | :59:30.
tries against England at the start of the game. They are clearly on | :59:31. | :59:33.
their mettle. Suddenly the crowd has got the message, the atmosphere is | :59:34. | :59:40.
livening up. Driven forward by Moa, good carry. It is the fifth tackle | :59:41. | :59:48.
as he goes down. It comes off in England foot. Another set of six. | :59:49. | :59:57.
Riding their luck. Five yards out, New Zealand have an opportunity to | :59:58. | :00:06.
really hammer at the English line. They get another set, it is a | :00:07. | :00:16.
penalty. Some discipline will be required by England in defence. They | :00:17. | :00:22.
don't want the two. They fancy England may be rocking and rolling a | :00:23. | :00:28.
little. Blair, unexpected recipient of that ball. Gaze back to Nikorima, | :00:29. | :00:41.
skipping back. Here comes Harris. Searching left, but finding only | :00:42. | :00:47.
white shirts will stop -- white shirts. Nikorima carrying it | :00:48. | :00:55.
further. Proctor. English defenders doing well at the moment. Sweeping | :00:56. | :01:00.
it back to Nightingale, searching for the centre ground, the winger. | :01:01. | :01:05.
Last tackle for England to hold out. A series of defensive hard work. | :01:06. | :01:11.
They come up with the ball again. Dropped on by James Graham, terrifc | :01:12. | :01:17.
by Danish defence. Well done by Danish defence, clear your lines. | :01:18. | :01:21.
Not the greatest of kicks. Trying to thread the needle. Could not get | :01:22. | :01:23.
through. England can be very happy, | :01:24. | :01:39.
possession and territory, 61%. That is for New Zealand and yet they have | :01:40. | :01:43.
not looked like scoring a try. England will be very happy after 20 | :01:44. | :01:53.
minutes. There has been a change for New Zealand. I wonder how long until | :01:54. | :01:59.
the props are rotated as well. There is a lot of defending they need to | :02:00. | :02:06.
do. We'll let him run along as long as he can. Watch James Roby, on the | :02:07. | :02:12.
back of a quick play, he can be devastating. Like last week, the | :02:13. | :02:18.
impact was made from the bench, and I think he will be looking for the | :02:19. | :02:31.
same again. That is a knock-on, is it? Martin Talbot has come on for | :02:32. | :02:42.
New Zealand. Off he goes with that magic footwork. I think the Kiwis | :02:43. | :02:54.
are very lateral. England are coping comfortably. Spun away into space, | :02:55. | :03:04.
but a great recovery. Must be running close to empty at the | :03:05. | :03:10.
moment. Pushing and pushing. England's defenders are pushing | :03:11. | :03:16.
back. On the sidelines you can see Burgess. New Zealand are throwing | :03:17. | :03:25.
everything at this English line. There has been a tangle in the | :03:26. | :03:30.
favour of England. Kodi Nikorima with the pass. Another set of six. | :03:31. | :03:37.
It will be New Zealand with the chance. England are under the cosh. | :03:38. | :03:44.
They will need to work hard. They are at sixes and sevens. This | :03:45. | :03:54.
deflection means it is a defensive scrum for England. You cannot | :03:55. | :03:59.
interchange in the scrum and they will not want to interchange whilst | :04:00. | :04:06.
England are defending like this. They will need to run on empty | :04:07. | :04:15.
little bit longer. They need to put some pressure on in that half. Here | :04:16. | :04:28.
comes another wave of black to test resolve. England will need to be | :04:29. | :04:41.
careful. James Roby came from a long way back to get that. He gets it | :04:42. | :04:51.
away. Just dragged down. How many tackles to go? Another drive by | :04:52. | :05:05.
Harris. Big effort by him but an even bigger effort by the four | :05:06. | :05:11.
players in white. Will they find a way through this time? They will | :05:12. | :05:18.
not. The ball is dropped and England survive. | :05:19. | :05:28.
Kiwis bashing at the door, going Route one. Trying to release a | :05:29. | :05:50.
player. Great effort. They will be very happy with that. Brilliant | :05:51. | :06:05.
penalty. We saw him trudging along the sideline. That means Burgess is | :06:06. | :06:29.
on. The tenacity we have shown in defence has been absolutely | :06:30. | :06:34.
brilliant. You can sense that. I am concerned about the energy, they | :06:35. | :06:39.
have taken a lot out of them. But let us see what he can do. This | :06:40. | :06:48.
could get interesting. This could be a big moment, psychological blow. | :06:49. | :07:00.
There has been a slip and suddenly the traffic is going the other way. | :07:01. | :07:15.
They want to get on with it. England thought they were getting a | :07:16. | :07:32.
reprieve. Little bit of the execution from England. He has a | :07:33. | :07:40.
little ambled forward to see what he might find. Kiwis look more | :07:41. | :07:53.
individual. They have still got a tackle in the tank. This is the last | :07:54. | :08:03.
one coming up now. Jordan Kahu spinning it to Kodi Nikorima. He can | :08:04. | :08:28.
take it as quick as he likes. Usually comes towards the halfway | :08:29. | :08:48.
line. I would attempt to describe it as mouse but at the moment... | :08:49. | :09:06.
Communication was good leader. You can see that in New Zealand are | :09:07. | :09:12.
utterly dominating in both respects. That is the problem. This is the end | :09:13. | :09:21.
of this half, but also in the next half. Defensively, they have been | :09:22. | :09:32.
awesome. Issac Luke is such an important player for that New | :09:33. | :09:35.
Zealand side. It cannot be overestimated. Getting away with | :09:36. | :10:09.
murder. He is not happy. He has got it wrong. There we are. All up | :10:10. | :10:25.
there, big effort. This is what happens when the other side has the | :10:26. | :10:29.
ball more often. Testing out the resolve of that New Zealand line. He | :10:30. | :10:37.
is carrying well. Has had a great couple of seasons. Spinning it back. | :10:38. | :10:52.
Alp they come towards Williams. England look more organised and | :10:53. | :11:03.
fluent. It is more individual play from the Kiwis. Just stepping away. | :11:04. | :11:25.
Might be the best thing since anybody else played in that | :11:26. | :11:30.
position. It is the nature of the game, it is very forward orientated. | :11:31. | :11:35.
They are still testing each other out after 40 minutes. Steve McNamara | :11:36. | :11:50.
knows all about the danger he poses. Joe Burgess, on his own line. It is | :11:51. | :11:55.
a great chase by New Zealand. Really good chase. | :11:56. | :12:09.
That is Bateman. They have been under the cosh. That penalty will | :12:10. | :12:38.
give him a full set. I think they have far more cohesion. This would | :12:39. | :12:50.
be a great opportunity. Don't forget on the red button, you can get the | :12:51. | :12:56.
forum afterwards. Once this match has finished. That is a solid drive, | :12:57. | :13:06.
very sound effort by him. This is the Kiwis back another yard. This is | :13:07. | :13:17.
Tom Burgess. England striding closer and closer. Sean O'Loughlin... Very | :13:18. | :13:35.
nearly made short work of the Kiwi defenders, but they did well to hang | :13:36. | :13:38.
on. But England have got the numbers. | :13:39. | :13:42.
He puts the kick in. It is Tohu Harris who gets there first. | :13:43. | :13:57.
Adam Blair was loitering behind the line. | :13:58. | :14:19.
Just had the cheque. There is the knock-on. What a big moment this is | :14:20. | :14:35.
in the game, seven minutes of the half remaining. England with six | :14:36. | :14:40.
tackles to pummel this New Zealand line. They have marshalled Kallum | :14:41. | :14:48.
Watkins well. He is such a brilliant player. He plays it relatively | :14:49. | :15:06.
quickly. He had two men on the outside and could not get the ball | :15:07. | :15:18.
away. Needed to go wide. Making a name for himself. | :15:19. | :15:23.
That is five tackles, and they have got that close. How much closer can | :15:24. | :15:36.
they get. Desperation, fingernails... But he beat Tom | :15:37. | :15:44.
Burgess. That is very good play by England. See how much they've got | :15:45. | :15:57.
left in the tank. How much has Sam Burgess's time in rugby union served | :15:58. | :16:01.
from well? He has come out of the spotlight and claim a place in this | :16:02. | :16:07.
team. He was getting gametime along with his brother. They've got three | :16:08. | :16:14.
of them again this year. I understand what you're saying and it | :16:15. | :16:18.
is a fear, but I think he was getting plenty anyway. He has done | :16:19. | :16:28.
an extremely good job today. I think England have got the Kiwis on the | :16:29. | :16:34.
fringes. They need to keep their composure. He will cut in and almost | :16:35. | :16:45.
cut through! Almost. Back again, across the line. | :16:46. | :16:52.
That was a forward pass. Just overran. I've been impressed by this | :16:53. | :17:07.
kid. He's done well. He is doing well, controlling the game. He is | :17:08. | :17:16.
key. He is controlling the kicking game. Very solid. These days, there | :17:17. | :17:32.
is a stellar start at St George. Trying to keep them inside their own | :17:33. | :17:58.
half. They are experienced campaigners, they are making a | :17:59. | :18:01.
conscious decision to stay strong throughout the game. We've not seen | :18:02. | :18:05.
a drop-off when they've introduced people from the bench. | :18:06. | :18:13.
Penalty for New Zealand. With a bit too much interference after the | :18:14. | :18:27.
tackle was completed. So, a penalty. Just a shadow of the World | :18:28. | :18:32.
Cup semifinal and the penalty given away by Burgess. Let us not linger | :18:33. | :18:37.
long on that one. A few people will never get over that. | :18:38. | :18:43.
The inside pass. Not for and picking at the moment. | :18:44. | :18:56.
Was aiming to the referee. It was a shocker. Fantastic defence by | :18:57. | :19:25.
England. A couple of times I thought they were over for the try but | :19:26. | :19:30.
brilliant last ditch attempt before a dreadful kick. That was crucial. | :19:31. | :19:39.
One opportunity. This game might just be about a | :19:40. | :19:52.
missed tackle, one effort not quite there to break it up. If he holds | :19:53. | :20:04.
his depth he can put one of the wingers over in the corner. They are | :20:05. | :20:07.
doing their job and holding the midfield. It is like a chess match | :20:08. | :20:28.
but all the pieces are kings. We need some football. The kicking game | :20:29. | :20:42.
is important, just got to keep the game solid, try and cut out your | :20:43. | :20:46.
mistakes. When an opportunity comes you take it. Can England give | :20:47. | :21:04.
themselves a lead? Enough of a touch to convince the referee it was a | :21:05. | :21:06.
knock-on. One chance for the Kiwis. Temporary absence of Issac Luke, | :21:07. | :22:12.
standing on the sidelines at the moment. The referee shouting to make | :22:13. | :22:27.
sure he was onside. Slowly but surely making decent ground here. | :22:28. | :22:40.
This is going to go up in the air. Can he beat one? He's done a | :22:41. | :22:43.
terrific job to get back in the field of play. It is a greasy ball, | :22:44. | :22:59.
put it up in the air. I think England will take great confidence | :23:00. | :23:11.
in this, they have held out Burma. The hooter sounds at the end of a | :23:12. | :23:17.
tight and tense first half, just one penalty kick. There has been no | :23:18. | :23:27.
tries in that opening 40 minutes. England just about having the | :23:28. | :23:36.
advantage of that half. Absolute chess match, this. What will make | :23:37. | :23:40.
the difference? The defence has been holding up rate. If we keep turning | :23:41. | :23:47.
up, the points will come. Will the kicking game be key for you? Yes, if | :23:48. | :23:52.
we can do that we will get the result. You dominated possession for | :23:53. | :23:59.
much of that. Are you disappointed you cannot get over the line? Not | :24:00. | :24:03.
really, we were trying to build something, we defended. Obviously we | :24:04. | :24:16.
would like to get across. Thank you. Let's take a look at the stats from | :24:17. | :24:24.
that first half. This is Rugby League, New Zealand with more | :24:25. | :24:32.
possession and territory. There are nine penalties. Is this flat? Yellow | :24:33. | :24:49.
mac I am quite enjoying it. It is very physical. We spoke about how it | :24:50. | :24:59.
was to be a physical encounter. The speed of the game has changed for | :25:00. | :25:06.
England. They brought to my players on and it kicked it up another | :25:07. | :25:09.
level. They've got to deal with it in the second half. I would | :25:10. | :25:16.
disagree, I don't think it has been hugely physical. The game has needed | :25:17. | :25:26.
one of those big men to kick-start the game. Both sides have been | :25:27. | :25:30.
conservative, they have played possession, statistics, all of these | :25:31. | :25:35.
things, ultimately, both sides are quite toothless. From New Zealand | :25:36. | :25:44.
point of view, thrown everything at the England line and England need to | :25:45. | :25:53.
dig in. You've got to commend both sets of defences. You can see where | :25:54. | :25:59.
the emphasis has been on defending the line and being committed. It has | :26:00. | :26:09.
been a drab affair. Would you agree with Sue at home who says the match | :26:10. | :26:17.
could do with a bit of beef. Two you've got to agitate them. I like | :26:18. | :26:24.
to see some emotion and fire in the belly, but... I think both teams | :26:25. | :26:32.
look nervous. There are showing one another respect and they know what | :26:33. | :26:37.
they can offer. New Zealand saw exactly what they can throw at them. | :26:38. | :26:41.
That is why you're seeing a more conservative approach. Are all the | :26:42. | :26:46.
talk about how much that has been an enjoyable first 40 minutes or not, | :26:47. | :26:52.
the defence for England deserves a lot of praise. Yes, they had a lot | :26:53. | :27:06.
of opportunities. Did not do that once, they did it twice. Another | :27:07. | :27:11.
example here. Showing his athletic ability. He trusts his athletic | :27:12. | :27:23.
ability. What we are seeing from him, he is one of the most difficult | :27:24. | :27:32.
positions to defend in. This is showing England's willingness to | :27:33. | :27:35.
stick together. I know for a fact they've actually worked very hard on | :27:36. | :27:46.
these. England really turned up for this one. England have not had many | :27:47. | :27:58.
blips. It is difficult to break that defence down. To break that defends | :27:59. | :28:05.
down unique smart players who can create space. If I am brutally | :28:06. | :28:09.
honest, they have not been able to create space. England struggled in | :28:10. | :28:22.
that department as well. They could go north a little bit more. They are | :28:23. | :28:31.
running laterally. On the flip side, England are creating a lot of space | :28:32. | :28:36.
on the right hand side. They have drawn a lot of players at him, he's | :28:37. | :28:44.
needed to do a lot of defending. England are finding their space. The | :28:45. | :28:53.
England players might be taking on the messages, but as the guys have | :28:54. | :28:59.
alluded to, the defence of work will have taken it out of them. I agree | :29:00. | :29:04.
with you. That will have sapped some of the energy. We spoke about the | :29:05. | :29:10.
bench coming on and being strong. They've got the depth and quality to | :29:11. | :29:14.
manage that and come out and play well in the second half. England | :29:15. | :29:18.
came out in the second half, had a lot of energy and were focused. If | :29:19. | :29:27.
New Zealand kicked better could they be ahead? The kicking game from New | :29:28. | :29:41.
Zealand was shambolic. We were chatting and Jamie Peacock made a | :29:42. | :29:48.
point. They never come up with kicks as bad as this. England's kicking | :29:49. | :29:59.
game was not great but this was lacking a lot. There was no clear | :30:00. | :30:08.
vision. That has been identified as a problem. One of the issues, they | :30:09. | :30:15.
have experience and time on the ball. Those special players, looking | :30:16. | :30:21.
at building more pressure. At this level, six tackles at the | :30:22. | :30:34.
goal line is not enough. That is what you need to do, kicked well, | :30:35. | :30:40.
make sure six becomes 12, becomes 18 and you get your try. England's best | :30:41. | :30:46.
chances have come from kicks? England's kicking game was not | :30:47. | :30:55.
great. Thanks further. -- thanks for that. Let's not sugar-coat that. | :30:56. | :31:03.
They created chances through wayward kicks. Williams puts up and nothing | :31:04. | :31:08.
kick, but in the unstructured part of the game, the any period which | :31:09. | :31:18.
was, England looked dangerous. For me, Robbie made a smart point, both | :31:19. | :31:24.
sides were a bit too lateral with the ball. James Roby kicking out a | :31:25. | :31:33.
dummy half, the best chances. A marked difference between the two | :31:34. | :31:37.
attacking styles, England moving the big attacking pack around, England | :31:38. | :31:43.
expending energy, even though they have been defending their line a | :31:44. | :31:47.
lot, very direct, not had to move the lot. The fact that the New | :31:48. | :31:54.
Zealand pack are having to go from one side of the field to the other | :31:55. | :31:57.
means they are burning up more energy than England, even though ... | :31:58. | :32:09.
You think more could have been taken out of the Kiwi defence because of | :32:10. | :32:13.
that? They're setting up the play, moving it well. New Zealand picking | :32:14. | :32:19.
up the lead runner every time. They may change the game plan in the | :32:20. | :32:23.
second half, putting a guy in front of the England defence. I think the | :32:24. | :32:29.
New Zealand strength is the off-loading game. It is the chase | :32:30. | :32:34.
between the forwards, they come up with the off-load. That is where | :32:35. | :32:39.
England need to defend well. The interplay between the forwards, | :32:40. | :32:43.
bending the line, allowing the off-load. You can only get two | :32:44. | :32:47.
defenders in utmost, that is where they come in. The pass to the | :32:48. | :32:53.
off-load. Your strength is the weakness in sport. Off-loading the | :32:54. | :32:57.
ball in contact is also the weakness. Two or three errors, | :32:58. | :33:04.
gifting possession to England. I agree with JP, I cannot see this New | :33:05. | :33:10.
Zealand side breaking England down anywhere other than off-loading the | :33:11. | :33:12.
ball and speeding it up. Structure will not work for them. They have a | :33:13. | :33:20.
big pass play at right, it is the off-loads, off-the-cuff that will | :33:21. | :33:25.
break England down. They have guys who are amazing on their feet, you | :33:26. | :33:29.
can find the outside players providing they keep their shape. Do | :33:30. | :33:34.
you accept that in sport. If something is your strength, | :33:35. | :33:38.
sometimes it will not come off and struggle? You adapt your started | :33:39. | :33:46.
super personnel. If you are tired, or whatever game you play, you | :33:47. | :33:51.
revert to a style you have always had. BBQ we forwards won to off-load | :33:52. | :33:56.
the ball, they have done it all their lives. If they get the | :33:57. | :34:01.
opportunity they will do it. The reason they have been strong over | :34:02. | :34:05.
the years is the off-loading game. We saw last week they fell in a hole | :34:06. | :34:09.
at the end of the game, I don't think they have got any theatre this | :34:10. | :34:14.
week. At the Rhinos, we have the emphasis on passing and off-loading. | :34:15. | :34:19.
But you always need to defend. You have to be committed to defend. That | :34:20. | :34:23.
is what we did not see from the Kiwis last week. The double edge of | :34:24. | :34:28.
the sword, although you can score points, you need to be committed and | :34:29. | :34:33.
make the tackle. We have had an awful lot of correspondence about | :34:34. | :34:39.
this. Paul Walsh, Danny Lomax, Matt O'Connor, saying the way the | :34:40. | :34:44.
refereeing is going, a lot of penalties around the ruck, could see | :34:45. | :34:49.
someone go. Also affecting the flow of the game. Part parcel of the two | :34:50. | :34:55.
teams being nervous, trying to control the speed of the ruck, | :34:56. | :34:59.
wanting the energy reserves to win the game. It is 2-2, I reckon this | :35:00. | :35:06.
game will go to the wire, a game of attrition, and he will have the most | :35:07. | :35:09.
Jews in the tank come the last test minutes. -- ten minutes. This is a | :35:10. | :35:17.
Test match, the referee 's should be talking to the players, saying he is | :35:18. | :35:21.
scrutinising the ruck, make it quick. Instead of everybody being | :35:22. | :35:26.
caught out in the game. Nine penalties have contributed to why | :35:27. | :35:34.
the game is dull. They should be selling our sport, sometimes... Nine | :35:35. | :35:40.
penalties and one half. That is too many. Thank you for the moment. As | :35:41. | :35:46.
I'm sure you are aware, watching this afternoon, a sad week for the | :35:47. | :35:51.
Rugby league family. The passing of two individuals who played a big | :35:52. | :36:08.
part in it. The young referee Chris leather -- Leatherbarrow, we also | :36:09. | :36:27.
lost Colin Welland, writer, scriptwriter, he was part of the BBC | :36:28. | :36:31.
Challenge Cup coverage, including when he received access all areas. | :36:32. | :36:36.
For any rugby league fan to be standing in the tunnel is marvellous | :36:37. | :36:40.
enough. I can hear the crowds cheering for the kids. To be going | :36:41. | :36:44.
into the dressing room is beyond my wildest dreams. A unique experience | :36:45. | :36:51.
for you, as well. I will just not. I use medically insured? Can I come | :36:52. | :36:58.
in? Last year you played a great game, like a force-fed five. I said, | :36:59. | :37:11.
this guy can really play, he was standing. Every time I watch Leeds | :37:12. | :37:20.
play you get on. Do you have an arrangement with said? I don't know. | :37:21. | :37:32.
Last time Saint Helens won the cup, they had an old man's pack, | :37:33. | :37:36.
everybody said they would get beaten because they are too old. You have | :37:37. | :37:40.
had to replace them with some young players. Good players, we are | :37:41. | :37:44.
confident they can win again for us not I once played in a side that | :37:45. | :37:53.
lost 83-3 to Cowley. Newton grammar. You did something I always wanted to | :37:54. | :37:57.
do, country rugby union and the rugby league player, never good | :37:58. | :38:02.
enough. Always nice to do it. The best of luck lads come I hope the | :38:03. | :38:06.
best team wins. I hope I will enjoy it as well. Colin Welland, sadly | :38:07. | :38:15.
missed. We were shown more of that remarkable archive footage on the | :38:16. | :38:18.
red button. Let's go to pitch side, Tanya. Ben Westwood, what was the | :38:19. | :38:23.
mood in the dressing room at half-time? Very positive. New | :38:24. | :38:27.
Zealand have come out and put pressure on our line. Defensively we | :38:28. | :38:32.
have been fantastic. Pleasing to see. What will make a difference in | :38:33. | :38:38.
the second half? I think we need to step up in our attacking. Once we | :38:39. | :38:42.
have offended, we need to go forward, take them on, hopefully | :38:43. | :38:47.
these big boys will get tired and we can run away like last week. | :38:48. | :38:51.
Frustrating to be watching on, do you wish you were out there? Not | :38:52. | :38:56.
nice, but mostly part of the squad, I love being around the boys. | :38:57. | :39:00.
Although I would love to be playing. I am enjoying my time here. | :39:01. | :39:05.
Hopefully next week we will see what happens. About to get back under | :39:06. | :39:12.
way. Let's return to Jonathan, Brian and Dave Woods. | :39:13. | :39:20.
COMMENTATOR: We need entertainment in the second half, tight and tense, | :39:21. | :39:25.
a lot of attritional staff, tough defence from both sides. We could do | :39:26. | :39:31.
with some star factor. I have picked up on what the boys were saying, in | :39:32. | :39:36.
the half-time analysis. I think England have a chance to move the | :39:37. | :39:42.
Kiwi team around in another way. Around the fringes, releasing | :39:43. | :39:45.
Watkins and Hardaker, move them laterally before going forward. That | :39:46. | :39:49.
will be part of the England's team thinking. It needs more expansion | :39:50. | :39:55.
from one team to break the game up. Go forward first. Very lateral. A | :39:56. | :40:02.
poor pass. That is what they have to do. I am convinced if they keep a | :40:03. | :40:07.
bit of composure as Brian said, on the fringes, Hardaker holding his | :40:08. | :40:17.
line of bit. Opportunities for them. Almost an apology by Tom verges, he | :40:18. | :40:24.
knew it was forward. Fireworks night this week, we could do with some | :40:25. | :40:31.
fireworks here this afternoon. It is 2-2 at the moment, with a Test | :40:32. | :40:34.
series in the balance. England winning the first game at Hull last | :40:35. | :40:41.
week. It would be their first Test series win in eight years, and that | :40:42. | :40:46.
was against the Kiwis back in 2007. A luck at stake. -- a luck. | :40:47. | :41:02.
Nikorima doesn't do with it. It has gone backwards, the Kiwis get away | :41:03. | :41:13.
with it. A standing start for the Kiwis' front man. Let's see if the | :41:14. | :41:22.
kick is better. Nikorima, on the sixth tackle, taking it to the line, | :41:23. | :41:30.
the offload. Was it a knock-on? It is a reach by Kenny-Dowall. A big | :41:31. | :41:37.
question mark hanging over this. He reckons a try. Having a look at the | :41:38. | :41:46.
knock-on. Let's hear from our video referee team, James Child and Phil | :41:47. | :41:51.
Bentham. We are checking for a knock-on on the offload. He is in | :41:52. | :42:03.
there. Or backwards. The pick-up is caught, that is fine, play on. | :42:04. | :42:10.
Everything looking towards a try. We go towards the grounding. The | :42:11. | :42:19.
grounding is fine. We are happy that is a try. What looked like a fumble | :42:20. | :42:29.
by Aris, turned out to be a sensational piece of handling. And | :42:30. | :42:41.
it off to Shaun Kenny-Dowall. There was nothing young, they did not go | :42:42. | :42:45.
for the kick, keeping the ball alive, brilliant skills to finish. | :42:46. | :42:50.
Nikorima decides to have a punt, looking for the offload. What a | :42:51. | :42:56.
catch by Harris. Shaun Kenny-Dowall stretches in. A bit of a soft start | :42:57. | :43:02.
by England, the forward pass giving them possession. Great skill level | :43:03. | :43:08.
from Paris. Simple finish for Shaun Kenny-Dowall. In the continued | :43:09. | :43:17.
absence of Issac Luke, and our touchline team are on the case to | :43:18. | :43:20.
find out if it is a problem for Issac Luke, or if it is permanent. | :43:21. | :43:41.
Not a bad replacement ticket. Jordan Kahu. New Zealand lead 8-2. After | :43:42. | :43:52.
brilliant defending in the first, New Zealand unlock the game. | :43:53. | :43:54.
Brilliant handling by Harris, and the finish. The restart has been | :43:55. | :43:59.
knocked on. Bateman has it for England. England on the attack | :44:00. | :44:04.
straightaway. Great chase by England, little look. Six tackles | :44:05. | :44:14.
from here. That was a 0 tackle. James Roby organising things. Five | :44:15. | :44:22.
tries in his last two internationals. Williams with a | :44:23. | :44:28.
short pass. Penalty for England underneath the sticks. They will not | :44:29. | :44:34.
go FIFA here. They will carry on with a tap and test. Sean | :44:35. | :44:40.
O'Loughlin. Widdop sashaying to the left. Sashaying inside. He has been | :44:41. | :44:49.
held down. The referee says play on. Hardaker with the high ball. | :44:50. | :44:59.
Burgess, close. Williams. Good if it by Jesse Bromwich. It is shrugged | :45:00. | :45:07.
away by Ferres. England remain camped on the New Zealand line. | :45:08. | :45:12.
Williams, rather telegraphing the step. The re-weighting in response. | :45:13. | :45:20.
James Roby started. Still tackles in the bank. Farrell tried, and Widdop | :45:21. | :45:32.
have knocked it on. England fancy the right-hand offence. They want to | :45:33. | :45:38.
isolate Nikorima. They have not executed it properly, taking too | :45:39. | :45:43.
many players forward. Get the ball to the fringes and have a look. They | :45:44. | :45:48.
need to execute better than that. Tanya has some half-time | :45:49. | :45:53.
information. Stephen Tierney telling his side they need 40 more minutes | :45:54. | :45:57.
of commitment in defence, telling his side to keep it simple in | :45:58. | :46:01.
attack, building up with faster balls to stretch England. Issac | :46:02. | :46:07.
Luke, he was substituted, nothing wrong with him, just not brought | :46:08. | :46:12.
back on. Steve McNamara said his team has been given the fence, but | :46:13. | :46:16.
doing too much of it. The last them to be tidier in attack, feeling they | :46:17. | :46:20.
are kicking too early, and the handling needs to be better. | :46:21. | :46:26.
Nightingale, involving himself again. Two tackles gone. There is | :46:27. | :46:34.
Issac Luke, poised and ready to come back imminently. The danger returned | :46:35. | :46:44.
when he returns. Meantime, England look to keep the New Zealand | :46:45. | :46:49.
advanced to a minimum. Brown out of dummy half. Not the best of balls. | :46:50. | :47:01.
Knocked on. England get a bonus it. Not sure what they were trying to | :47:02. | :47:06.
do. All coming across, easy for the English defence. Poor passing. This | :47:07. | :47:21.
is still anyone's game. Up to some anti gravity a the scruff of the | :47:22. | :47:25.
neck. Take it around the side of the field. Still Kallum Watkins and | :47:26. | :47:31.
Hardaker, one-on-one, they have the opportunities. They have to create | :47:32. | :47:37.
the opportunities. There is Bateman, held up. Burgess, trundling forward | :47:38. | :47:48.
with great intent. Looking to play quickly again. Another family trait. | :47:49. | :47:57.
Now with Bateman running into the shoulder. Don't want to do that too | :47:58. | :47:58.
often. Williams unable to get away. John | :47:59. | :48:13.
right, left and right again without any great advancement. England | :48:14. | :48:20.
trying to punch a hole, finding themselves desperately close to the | :48:21. | :48:26.
touchline. Just about kept in play. Sixth tackle, what can they conjure? | :48:27. | :48:33.
Up it goes. A lot of Kiwis, Ryan Hall tries to knock it back. Play | :48:34. | :48:38.
on, the referee says as the Kiwis have it in their hands. It has | :48:39. | :48:43.
become really nervous, the Kiwis have their noses in front, | :48:44. | :48:49.
understand what they need to do. Someone has to make a mistake, | :48:50. | :48:52.
missed a tackle, it needs to be England that get the next score. If | :48:53. | :48:58.
you feel everyone being sent nervous, England need to score next. | :48:59. | :49:09.
-- so nervous. Momentarily there was an injury concern for New Zealand. | :49:10. | :49:16.
Nikorima has been having treatment. Just behind the line coming back on. | :49:17. | :49:29.
Does not look 100%. Hall doing his job efficiently. England trying to | :49:30. | :49:36.
batter their way forward. Defending inside their own half. Bateman has | :49:37. | :49:44.
plenty of grants and energy. England need more than that at the moment. | :49:45. | :50:01.
Was that high? Looking to return the kick. England's offensive line moves | :50:02. | :50:14.
up collectively. Nightingale. The red button forum after this | :50:15. | :50:19.
programme, once we are fair, you carry on with the rugby league chat. | :50:20. | :50:25.
Joining in as well. Next week may be the decider. As it stands, it may | :50:26. | :50:33.
be. If you are looking for tickets, don't bother, absolute sell-out. | :50:34. | :50:39.
That is a penalty for New Zealand. Do you think they will kick? I think | :50:40. | :50:48.
it is too far for him. I do think he has the legs for that. If they get | :50:49. | :50:57.
another try under their belts, puts them in a very commanding decision. | :50:58. | :51:01.
They have dominated possession and territory. They must think this is | :51:02. | :51:09.
the chance. Jesse Bromwich, down. Harris reaching, offering a real | :51:10. | :51:20.
threat. They hang on, they think about spinning is wide. They are | :51:21. | :51:25.
trying to isolate the English defenders. Great tackle. Brilliant | :51:26. | :51:33.
step. Back to the middle it comes. The English line advancing quickly. | :51:34. | :51:47.
Nikorima has lost it. He was in. What have you made of young Kodi | :51:48. | :51:54.
Nikorima? He has looked dangerous. If he that, in the clear. He has | :51:55. | :52:00.
added something. More threatening than a man he replaced. The speed | :52:01. | :52:16.
has made it dangerous. James Roby. Inside the New Zealand half. Little | :52:17. | :52:31.
kick, the defence in their face, led by Williams. It has become such a | :52:32. | :52:40.
tense affair. Someone has to break it up. It is so tense. The New | :52:41. | :52:59.
Zealanders just want to play in the right areas. Off-loading in the | :53:00. | :53:08.
opposition half. Not trying anything in their own half. Good handling | :53:09. | :53:13.
from the Kiwis. The ball is flicked back inside. Shaun Kenny-Dowall | :53:14. | :53:22.
picks it up. No England hand. They comes the last tackle. What can they | :53:23. | :53:33.
do from a? Burgess, prodigious leap. A good clearing run. Very good play | :53:34. | :53:41.
by Burgess. To keep his concentration, go up early, | :53:42. | :53:47.
brilliant take. Burgess and Watkins, would love to see them in harness | :53:48. | :53:52.
attacking in the second half. England need to shift the ball. | :53:53. | :54:00.
Still plenty of time, England trailing by a try and conversion. | :54:01. | :54:11.
James Roby and Chris Hill making yards, it is coming from England. A | :54:12. | :54:21.
scruffy kick. He had a 3-2 there, could have shifted it. New Zealand | :54:22. | :54:27.
start again from their own half. Shaun Kenny-Dowall getting himself | :54:28. | :54:34.
involved. It is very aptly scored today in this stadium, his father | :54:35. | :54:39.
was a javelin gold medallist at the 2000 Paralympics. Another bit of a | :54:40. | :54:46.
living history to add to that family. A cry of Kiwi going around | :54:47. | :54:56.
the stadium from the New Zealand fans, they feel they are edging | :54:57. | :55:04.
their side to victory. I think their side are looking more comfortable. | :55:05. | :55:10.
Ryan Hall stepson. He beats Luke easily enough. He did what he needed | :55:11. | :55:19.
to do, getting England moving forward again here. This is | :55:20. | :55:32.
Hardaker. Tussle and tackle. Bateman has lost the ball in the collision. | :55:33. | :55:41.
Good steel. You do get the feeling very often referees are tossing a | :55:42. | :55:50.
coin on those sort of decisions. Came down in England's favour. I | :55:51. | :55:56.
think he got the right call. Whitehead coming back on. Sean | :55:57. | :56:01.
O'Loughlin going off. Here is Bateman. Include creating inside New | :56:02. | :56:08.
Zealand's half. Plenty of time in the game for England. 25 minutes or | :56:09. | :56:18.
so. New Zealand have slowed things right down. James Roby, now Chris | :56:19. | :56:35.
Hill. Enterprising position to work from. It comes Watkins. Doing what | :56:36. | :56:42.
he loved to do. Great off-load by Tim, Burgess in the corner. England | :56:43. | :56:50.
are denied. Picked up by Hardaker. Tried down. Ten away. Suddenly the | :56:51. | :56:57.
crowd find their boys. England's showing something, finding their | :56:58. | :57:05.
rhythm. In example of what they need to do, go to the fringes, putting | :57:06. | :57:09.
the Kiwi line under so much pressure. Widdop to Farrell. Chris | :57:10. | :57:19.
Hall has got it away. In probably. Farrell can go no further. Keeping | :57:20. | :57:26.
England in attacking possession. Chris Hill trying to push and push. | :57:27. | :57:33.
Again slowish. Plenty of tackles left. The ball is kicked on, the | :57:34. | :57:46.
referee says play on. It needed a bit of composure, they were | :57:47. | :57:52.
panicking and rushing, England. They give the hard work, creating space. | :57:53. | :57:56.
I would like to see Zak Hardaker taking the ball to the defensive | :57:57. | :58:01.
line attracting defenders. He shifted defenders there. | :58:02. | :58:09.
Nightingale, running away inside England's half. Look out quickly | :58:10. | :58:15.
they have eaten at the yards, New Zealand, getting themselves inside | :58:16. | :58:20.
the England half. That is a terrific kick from Issac Luke. Ryan Hall | :58:21. | :58:26.
given no hope of getting there because of the chase. Jon Wilkin | :58:27. | :58:33.
made a point, if you play against Australia, the kicking game is | :58:34. | :58:35.
brilliant from the half-backs. First half was poor from the Kiwis, Issac | :58:36. | :58:44.
Luke has put three in the second half, they have been spot on, the | :58:45. | :58:49.
chase is good. The model is Cameron Smith, the Australian, when they are | :58:50. | :58:53.
under pressure, he steps out, kicking the ball into the corner, 1 | :58:54. | :58:57.
metre from the try line, and the sideline, you look up there is a | :58:58. | :59:02.
wall of green. Issac Luke has replicated that. The best way to do | :59:03. | :59:10.
it. Just step one yard, no one knows, no one can drop back. But a | :59:11. | :59:16.
good kick in. Not a bad job at the turn. -- bad job of a drop out | :59:17. | :59:32.
return. Issac Luke operating a dummy half again, showing what a key | :59:33. | :59:39.
figure he is for this New Zealand side. It takes the ball to the line, | :59:40. | :59:43.
little off-load. Nikorima, back it goes. England again on their own | :59:44. | :59:50.
line, having to survive only one more tackle in this set. Nikorima | :59:51. | :59:57.
with a short pass, he delays the ball superbly well. Nikorima once | :59:58. | :00:06.
more, it is a clearance kick from Widdop, that lacked authority. He | :00:07. | :00:12.
took a risk, Jesse Bromwich all over him, I thought he was going to dive | :00:13. | :00:15.
in the ball, in the end he does well, outstanding kick. The off-load | :00:16. | :00:24.
kills England. Nikorima, and Jesse Bromwich with the Sidekick. Deft | :00:25. | :00:35.
skills. It comes off his knee. I don't think he's in control of that! | :00:36. | :01:36.
England are hanging on by their fingernails at the moment. He pushes | :01:37. | :01:41.
through. How many times have England been in this position? Another | :01:42. | :01:48.
little slight kick and another response, this time, from Watkins. | :01:49. | :01:58.
The kicking game has vastly improved. They must've said they are | :01:59. | :02:07.
wasting these opportunities. Second-half, they have upped the | :02:08. | :02:16.
game on the kicking stakes. As it stands, it is going to a decider. I | :02:17. | :02:28.
rather fancy that will be a noisy game. They've got to hang on. Here | :02:29. | :02:38.
comes the drop out. It has taken on again. He plays it. | :02:39. | :03:18.
Luke spends it back. England are teetering here. As he got it down? | :03:19. | :03:25.
The referee is not sure. This is the guy who eventually | :03:26. | :04:12.
attends to ground the ball. It is whether or not he gets it on the | :04:13. | :04:25.
ground. That looks to me as if he has lost that. I cannot see that he | :04:26. | :04:38.
has got a hand on the ball at that point. We are going, no try. | :04:39. | :05:04.
It is almost a cheer of relief because that is the huge let off. | :05:05. | :05:15.
He was hanging and dangling it out. If he goes for the line, I think he | :05:16. | :05:25.
scores. Brilliant play to hold it up. Huge tackle in the scheme of | :05:26. | :05:37.
things. How do they respond now? Has taken it almost to the halfway line | :05:38. | :05:41.
with only a couple of tackles gone. This is Graham, looking to continue | :05:42. | :05:45.
that good work. England needing some razzle-dazzle. Just kept hold of it. | :05:46. | :06:00.
Very good. I would put this up in the air. Get the chasers onto the | :06:01. | :06:15.
full-back. Shaun Kenny-Dowall underneath it. They've got to | :06:16. | :06:29.
compete for that ball. Just to reinforce that, England need to | :06:30. | :06:42.
compete. Every kick they put up needs to be a competition. | :06:43. | :06:51.
Eventually, the cul-de-sac closing in around him. A lot of distance | :06:52. | :07:03.
around it. That is a mistake England cannot afford. That is why he took | :07:04. | :07:12.
the risk. It does not come off. It was not an advantage played. | :07:13. | :07:25.
International rules. Kodi Nikorima is struggling. I think it is cramp. | :07:26. | :07:43.
That is a little moment of advantage. | :07:44. | :08:08.
He is clearly struggling. Click the red button after we finish. New | :08:09. | :08:17.
Zealand are leading by a try and a goal. It can change so quickly. I | :08:18. | :08:25.
would take it. The defence is so good. The clock is against England. | :08:26. | :08:55.
England starting again from here. Kodi Nikorima again. Zak Hardaker | :08:56. | :09:06.
have to look at Kodi Nikorima and try to isolate him. He has no gone | :09:07. | :09:16.
up to the wing. He will go into the centre position and it is an | :09:17. | :09:23.
opportunity to attack him. Has been glaring at Kodi Nikorima who has | :09:24. | :09:32.
gone the other way. 13.5 minutes for England to rescue it. England | :09:33. | :09:40.
pressing on the right-hand side. It is a risk too far. It has been a | :09:41. | :09:47.
story of missed opportunities at times for England. You need to get | :09:48. | :10:11.
the ball in here. This game is going to be won by someone on the | :10:12. | :10:13.
backline. Sam Muller has come off. We were talking about Kodi Nikorima | :10:14. | :10:39.
struggling. He has got cramp. Very much running repairs the moment. | :10:40. | :10:49.
The Kiwis are just playing the numbers game and banging the ball | :10:50. | :11:04.
down the field. England need to find something. | :11:05. | :11:15.
One moment of brilliance, you want. Burgess can go the length. Just one | :11:16. | :11:30.
piece of magic to create a little bit of space. New Zealand... 20 | :11:31. | :11:41.
metres from that England line. Penalty to New Zealand. This could | :11:42. | :11:50.
be a punishing moment from England's point of view. How many | :11:51. | :11:55.
penalties have we had? 14 penalties? | :11:56. | :12:15.
There will be a delay here because he is getting treatment. The Kiwis | :12:16. | :12:24.
came into this series with the deficit. | :12:25. | :12:41.
Kodi Nikorima came here as a back-up. He will be desperate not to | :12:42. | :12:51.
go off because there is not a lot of flair to replace him with. | :12:52. | :13:07.
Here comes a penalty that might have just put it out of range for | :13:08. | :13:18.
England. Send it all word. He's put it wide. They missed the try | :13:19. | :13:27.
earlier, the door remains open for England. At this level, that is a | :13:28. | :13:35.
bad mess. That is an easy kick and that is a badness. That should give | :13:36. | :13:43.
England an incentive. The crowd find their voice again. | :13:44. | :13:57.
I think I'm right in saying that if it is a draw, if England get a try | :13:58. | :14:11.
here, it would still be given as England's win. England are a try and | :14:12. | :14:12.
a goal away. Command, England. The referee is forced to stop the | :14:13. | :14:31.
clock. This looks like a potentially match-winning kick, just wide. | :14:32. | :14:53.
This emergence as a second, third nation began. Watching the team in | :14:54. | :15:02.
black beating officially the best team in the world. England are | :15:03. | :15:05.
running them close here. Brings it down the middle. That is a | :15:06. | :15:46.
good carry. Trying to barge them away. Still going here. They've only | :15:47. | :15:56.
one more tackle to go. James Graham! He scores the try. It has | :15:57. | :16:02.
yet to be confirmed because the referee has put the square in the | :16:03. | :16:13.
air. He thinks it was a try. Check the contact on James Graham. This | :16:14. | :16:17.
could be massive because this could be a penalty try which would give | :16:18. | :16:23.
England the opportunity for eight points. The first thing we need to | :16:24. | :16:40.
look at is the offside position. Then we will come back to that | :16:41. | :16:42.
grounding. We are happy with that. That is fine. If the ball on the | :16:43. | :17:33.
floor? This might be the one. It looks as though there might have | :17:34. | :17:34.
been some contact with the hand. At this point if there is no hand we | :17:35. | :18:04.
are saying it is play on. We have to see what happens here. | :18:05. | :18:43.
Some contact with the finger during that process. No try, 20 metres to | :18:44. | :18:56.
restart. They are not going to like it. They don't like it. I think that | :18:57. | :19:04.
is the right decision, without any shadow of the doubt. There is a | :19:05. | :19:12.
comedy of errors. When he misses it, one of the Kiwi players, it gets in | :19:13. | :19:25.
his way. I think it was the right call. It has gone through his hands | :19:26. | :19:30.
and hit off his legs. Should have been England on the | :19:31. | :19:50.
attack. There was no hint of foul play. | :19:51. | :20:16.
Shrugs away the attentions. The winger is drawing some fuel out of | :20:17. | :20:26.
the English tank. Gaining good yards. | :20:27. | :20:37.
They are loading up the left-hand side. Kodi Nikorima hits it. It is | :20:38. | :20:49.
play on. Kodi Nikorima will score the try on his full international | :20:50. | :20:53.
debut, but the referee is not sure about that. I think he is short. | :20:54. | :21:03.
That is the little bit of luck that you need. | :21:04. | :21:21.
You've got to opportunities that should have resulted in tries. James | :21:22. | :21:50.
Graham has got to fall on that, Kodi Nikorima has got to sliding earlier. | :21:51. | :21:55.
They should have been scored. -- slide in earlier. England need to | :21:56. | :22:02.
shape up. They've been given a retrieve. They've got to play with a | :22:03. | :22:06.
little bit more ball movement. Route one is not working. Not the most | :22:07. | :22:19.
memorable of Test matches in terms of razzle-dazzle but it could yet | :22:20. | :22:25.
have a thrilling finish, with England chasing the game and the | :22:26. | :22:47.
series. They want to keep them here. Sean O'Loughlin to Williams, to | :22:48. | :22:48.
Watkins. Playing it quickly again. They are | :22:49. | :23:12.
running it now. Nowhere to go, Bateman. That got him out of | :23:13. | :23:35.
trouble. We have not seen the classic we would have hoped for but | :23:36. | :23:39.
you've got to take your to both defences. It has been a terrific | :23:40. | :23:45.
display. The Kiwis have improved massively. They are finding | :23:46. | :23:56.
opportunities. Five minutes for England to get the series here. | :23:57. | :24:28.
He was only a penalty kick away from making sure his side won this. | :24:29. | :24:52.
Inside ball, testing the defence. He has lost the ball again. Just watch | :24:53. | :25:25.
him losing it. He's had a massive influence on this game. His kicking | :25:26. | :25:34.
was pinpoint. He has pulled the strings today of what will be a Kiwi | :25:35. | :25:53.
win in four minutes. It is going to be a drop goal attempt and it has | :25:54. | :26:01.
not gone over. The referee waits for confirmation and gets it. It is only | :26:02. | :26:06.
worth one point. But it is also worth a victory as far as New | :26:07. | :26:14.
Zealand are concerned. That is surely too far back. We are off to | :26:15. | :26:33.
Wigan next week for a humdinger of a decider. | :26:34. | :26:42.
2.5 minutes to go. Need to score here. | :26:43. | :27:01.
That drop goal should have secured victory but still stretching his | :27:02. | :27:15.
hamstrings. They came in the many thousands hoping for England to make | :27:16. | :27:22.
history. It does not look like it will end up that way. England have | :27:23. | :27:30.
not scored a try in this game and they would love to write that wrong. | :27:31. | :27:57.
They can take their time with this drop out and England will have one | :27:58. | :28:03.
more chance and that will not be enough. Yellow matter has been | :28:04. | :28:13.
nothing to pick between the teams. Probably separated these teams. They | :28:14. | :28:20.
have both concentrated on a little bit of attack. It is on the fringes. | :28:21. | :28:32.
They've done their job, they've held the midfield, they've isolated them, | :28:33. | :28:37.
they've done brilliantly. The defence have been awesome. England | :28:38. | :28:53.
stand up, because since the opening minute of that last game, they went | :28:54. | :28:58.
for a long time having only conceded one try. They've got to take | :28:59. | :29:01.
something from that. England have not scored a try here. They want to | :29:02. | :29:06.
light up London in the very last moments. He has pastored forward to | :29:07. | :29:18.
himself. The Kiwi know if they can get the ball back from this it | :29:19. | :29:27.
should see them over. They are spending a lot of time together, | :29:28. | :29:32.
they have improved beyond all recognition. I still think England | :29:33. | :29:41.
have some improvement in them. I think Jesse Bromwich, Kevin Proctor | :29:42. | :29:48.
and Adam Blair have been good for the Kiwis. I think next week will be | :29:49. | :29:58.
about who can attack the best. I would like to see backs into the | :29:59. | :30:02.
game. Are brilliant runners. They've not been used as much as I would | :30:03. | :30:14.
have liked. There is clearly not much between these teams. That is | :30:15. | :30:19.
Test match football at the highest level. Can England create something? | :30:20. | :30:52.
New Zealand have it back again. Still alive with one game to go. It | :30:53. | :31:01.
will be decided in Wigan next week. England taking their capital | :31:02. | :31:10.
punishment in London today. They have only conceded one but it is New | :31:11. | :31:14.
Zealand who come out with the honours. The unlikeliest of | :31:15. | :31:23.
scorelines. That is a reflection that the entertainment we have seen | :31:24. | :31:29.
today, defence on top, and ultimately, New Zealand on top. One | :31:30. | :31:41.
Test match each with one to go. In seven days this series will be | :31:42. | :31:45.
decided. Not quite the spectacle the Rugby League community were hoping | :31:46. | :31:55.
for today. This has been a pedigree performance. Congratulations, huge | :31:56. | :32:07.
effort for your side. They let us down last week, credit to those | :32:08. | :32:11.
boys. We turned up, keep turning up and played for 80 minutes. Very | :32:12. | :32:20.
patient. Sometimes you get carried away. Can you seal it at Wigan? | :32:21. | :32:30.
100%. Anything can happen. We will get ready for a big game. Let's | :32:31. | :32:35.
bring in the England captain. Sean O'Loughlin. How frustrating was | :32:36. | :32:43.
that? It was tough. That is what you expect from an international match. | :32:44. | :32:48.
Both teams were going to be a lot better, they came out better this | :32:49. | :32:51.
week. We did not handle it as well. Credit to them. We have work to do. | :32:52. | :32:59.
Thank you. Very quickly, the man of the match. Here is your champagne, | :33:00. | :33:10.
Issac Luke. How tough was that? Had. The boys did well. It seemed those | :33:11. | :33:15.
little touches got you over the line. Our boys laid the platform and | :33:16. | :33:19.
got us going forward. And Many congratulations. That is | :33:20. | :33:32.
what say hello to my wife, Michaela, and my babies, Atticus and | :33:33. | :33:44.
Cruise. New Zealand worked on a few things. Retention of the ball, | :33:45. | :33:50.
making sure they controlled the ruck, they did very well. They | :33:51. | :33:56.
frustrated England. Able to play for the full 80 minutes, which they did | :33:57. | :34:00.
not last week. Very quickly, it England have to improve defensively | :34:01. | :34:05.
next week? They did not look slick with the ball, cohesive. Probably | :34:06. | :34:11.
tactically naive in the second half, you need to do more with the ball. | :34:12. | :34:18.
Need to work on that. The defence was outstanding, one try conceded. | :34:19. | :34:24.
Thank you to Jamie, Robbie, Jon Wilkin for the moment on BBC One. | :34:25. | :34:29.
All the analysis, plenty of reaction, we will talk Sam Burgess, | :34:30. | :34:33.
on the red button. We will see you in Wigan, next Saturday lunchtime, | :34:34. | :34:39.
for the decider. Thanks. | :34:40. | :34:59.
A drop goal attempt, he has won over. We are after Wigan next week, | :35:00. | :35:09.
for a funding gap of a decider. | :35:10. | :35:11. |
