Fourth Round Rugby League: Challenge Cup

That afternoon, well come to Huddersfield, the road to Wembley

begins here with two of the game's great clubs hoping to lift the

Tetley's Challenge Cup when we get to Wembley at the end of August.

They kick off is just under half an hour away. The former captain is in

the studio with me, as is Jonathan Davies. What title shall I have you,

Brian? We will get to the nitty-gritty of what exactly his

role as due course. If you would like to get in touch with us, you

before we even get into Saint Helens and Huddersfield. What is your

position at the moment? Well, I met with the chief executive on Friday

morning and he was keen to go in a different direction on the coaching

front. So in a nutshell, that is probably where we are at the moment.

That has been a job offer as director of football. The big Asians

have not been discussed in detail. -- the implications. So you are no

longer head coach of Salford. You could be director of football, is

that it? I think that is where we are wrapped. There is still a lot of

water to go under the bridge and unanswered questions, certainly.

After the great win on Thursday night, it was a bit of a surprise. A

Salford fan is already in touch with us. He says, I really hope Brian

stays on as director of football. Does that role appealed to you?

Well, firstly, thank you. We all have to take legal advice in these

situations and I think it is important to bear in mind it is

difficult for me to talk about it because of that. I don't want to

shoot myself or anybody else in the foot. What is the general feel of

what happened to Brian? I certainly don't think he is coming out in the

press and saying what Salford is going to do. It doesn't help his

team. It adds so much more pressure. From my point of view, if

I was facing that, you want to raise your game. You've been told as a

team that you're going to go and do things, so you want to perform. He

could be adding pressure to his players. We have to have benefactors

and investments in sport but it amazes me - they should have

delegations out to get people on board, but they should have hands-on

approach. They've got credibility from their success in the business

world, but why do they think they can just do what ever they want?

They have to give someone a brawl, it leave them to get on with it, and

stand back a bit. -- give someone a role. For some reason, sport is ego

driven and it goes pear shaped. Well, did you feel sides were played

in Salford differently this year to how they were played last year? Was

that partly down to the owners? Well, it was down to the sometimes

unrealistic expectancy placed on the player. Some of the things that have

been said about the team, your game will be affected. I know intimately

what has gone on and where the team is. I absolutely have complete faith

in that team. Living with pressure is what players and coaches do.

Could you do your job without interference? Excellent question. I

was doing my job anyway. I think you could do it easily without

interference. It's not so much about interference. Anybody who puts their

money into a club and they own the club, that's the same with a lot of

the rugby league clubs, they deserve to ask questions about what is going

on. How the team are performing. They deserve to have answers.

Pressure is part and parcel of what we do and part of the growing

process in this new team, with players from 12 clubs, with high

expectancy levels, it is not unexpected to have difficulties at

the start. We are two points away from the top five. The catalyst of

Thursday night, I felt, was probably the tipping point in terms of

getting to know each other, getting players back out there. From the

point of view of the players, when you get a game like this, as Brian

says, this could've been the catalyst for the season. A couple of

late tries, the second of which will see any moment - do you sometimes

sensed a turning point? Definitely. Anyway in the Challenge Cup is

worthy winner. -- any win in the Challenge Cup is a worthy win. If

you look at it, you sometimes think, well, is our name on the Challenge

Cup this year? If anything, maybe it is too early for sulphate in the

Super League. But you only have to win a certain amount of games for

the cup. -- for Salford. I wish absolutely every success. I think

this team is ready to do things. There is always going to be a lot of

noise around a new team. You just have to look at man city.

Expectation levels are really high. Absolutely I'm disappointed. Do I

understand some of it? Maybe not. I have faith in both myself and the

players. They are a good group of players and it takes time sometimes

to gel. They are a good group and they also have strong personalities.

The coach will have to manage that as well. Sometimes, is it easier for

a more experienced man to handle those personalities? Obviously,

Brian's history in the game speaks for itself. But there are a lot of

big personalities and the me that is 95% of a coach's job. These guys

know how to play. It is about getting the best from them. Tweet or

Facebook is. Brian is with us all afternoon. He will answer anything

you want to put to him. Let's concentrate on this game.

Huddersfield against St Helens, the prize of the Challenge Cup awaits in

August. Who will get their hands on it? Who better to take us through

this competition then our very own commentator. Tradition. Drama.

Passion. The long road to Wembley begins with these two historic

games. Saints Super League start has been faultless. Former Huddersfield

coach wants the silverware to return to the Giants. They are desperate to

add to last year's success. The road to Wembley starts here.

The road to Wembley does indeed start here at Huddersfield although

some games have taken place already, if that makes sense. There are the

results so far. All the other games taking place today kick off at 2pm.

So by the time we get to the draw for the fifth round we will know all

the qualifying teams. Once the final which shall -- whistle has gone,

that fifth round draw for Tetley's Challenge Cup will be straight after

the game. Paul, is your former side of favourite? I would have to say

so, looking at that team sheet. I think some of the players have done

a fine plastic job. Luke Walsh has had a big impact. -- a fantastic

job. Brian, I use a prize by how Saints have started this year? Know,

the young players have stood up and learned from last year. -- are you

surprised. They have a bit of flair and confidence. I think also it is a

balance of youth and experience. A big pack of forwards, it looks like

a very well-balanced side. Saints have capped an unbeaten record

against Leeds. Last week, a couple of fantastic tries. Adam Swift and

Jonny Lomax have added some genuine pace to the team. They just seem to

be growing in confidence. Tommy's brains, that was a tough call and he

was running out of time with the touchline looming. He is a smart

guy. Give us some insight into how hard it is to tell yourself to wait

for the right moment to pick up a bouncing ball. You just want a bigot

out as soon as you can. The touchline is there. You just want to

pick it up. Also, Jonny Lomax is a brilliant player. He reads the game

so well. His kicking game is good. Makinson said after the win against

Leeds that they had the best backline. Preseason, everyone said

Leeds. He said they had a better backline. The match last week was

the Leeds backline against the Saints backline. They're talented

and they're quick and speedy and the Huddersfield backline have a

definite challenge in that respect this week. For all the fancy work at

the backline, sometimes you can't beat a big bloke upfront. None are

bigger than that man there, Mose Masoe. If you look at here now, John

Wilkins does look like a small boy for this interview!

So you've got this nickname, the Smiling Assassin. UN joy that side

of the game, don't you? I like the physicality of the game. I got the

nickname because every time put a shot on, I smiled and it just

aggravates the person playing the ball. We saw at training today you

had a little smirk when you put one of our team-mate on his backside.

Are you OK? A bit sore, to be honest. What happened? I was on the

training field minding my own business and before I knew it I was

on my back. It's just mucking around. That's just part of it. You

are mucking around you are crucifying all of us! He's a big

softy of the field but I'm glad he's on my team, rather than an

opposition player. -- off the field. Polynesian athletes are you great

asset for any sports team. It's the build of the Polynesian people. They

love being physical. Others say they're to big!

How big were you at 15? About 100 kilos! Every Samoan guy in

professional rugby week seems to be huge. In Samoa, most of the people

are lean and ripped. I think it is Samoan is born in New Zealand and

Australia that introduced a Western diet and with the Samoan food, we

just get massive. Do you like Western food? No! Clare how did you

find the World Cup, playing for Samoa? Great fun. Surprise in,

especially the game against New Zealand. It was a great atmosphere.

Is that part of the reason you decided to come to this country?

Yes, it was kind of like a Queen Street Hooligans atmosphere. The

people of the games and supporting the teams. If you live in Saint

Helens, you support Saint Helens. You can't support any other team. I

think I'm about 80% at the moment. Still got to get fitter. Stay away

from the Western diet! That it! Stick to eating veggies!

He is a big, big man. We have spoken about Huddersfield yet but we will

shortly. Brian, take us through the Saint Helen steam. A speedy

backline, led by Jonny Lomax. He has potential to be the best fullback in

the game. Two young, talented blokes. Jordan Turner has set the

competition a light and watch out for him because they are framing the

title of best backline and those two people are important. And there is

the experience in the tank. They will get the team around. They are

the important blokes. And what a front row! Kyle Amor with James

Walmsley -- James Roby and Alex Walmsley. Mark Flanagan is in for

the injured Jon Wilkin. Off the bench, some of the big blokes and an

experienced man in Paul Wellens, one of the superstars of Super League.

Another big young fella, Joe Greenwood, and a big, big, big

fella, Manu Masoe. Clare let's look at one of the head is today.

We've spoken about Luke Walsh but Luke Walsh against Danny Brough and

how they manage their sides will be crucial. He's a great player. If you

keep him quiet, you generally keep Huddersfield quiet. If you are on

the Huddersfield backline, you want to impose physically on the St

Helens boys but Danny Brough going forward, if they get the momentum,

he's got everything. He's got a great kicking game. It's going to be

a very good match. As Paul and Brian know, it's the platform that they

lay for these two boys. Whoever gets the upper hand in the forward,

either Walsh or broth will have the dominant game. Luke Walsh has only

missed three goals this season. His goal-kicking has been outstanding

and coming into games like this against Huddersfield, it could be

all down to goal-kicking. As it's the Challenge Cup, you only get one

opportunity so you want to take the chances. He's got a bit more help

today, Danny Brough. Luke Robinson is experienced and Shaun Lunt has

come back into the team. They've had to use Robinson a heck of a lot in

the dummy half position, which he will play again today, but if you

take a bit of pressure away from Danny Brough, he can win again

single-handedly. As well as the head-to-head, there's something else

to keep an eye on this afternoon, which is the hair of Soliola against

Crabtree. He is properly flowing today! Much more volume four Soliola

until he ruined it by getting it plaited. It was massive, that hair,

against Leeds last weekend. We've given both of them a style marking

of five. We have done that because, let me tell you, they are both worth

it. Let's hear from both coaches, Nathan Brown and Paul Anderson.

Nathan, a terrific start to the season. Last year was a season of

transition. Why so consistent? Last year we used a lot of rookies and

those same kids that are playing this year are still young and have a

lot of improvement, just through playing, but last year gave me an

indication. They've improved a fair bit and we've made some recruitment

decisions which appear to be helping the team. Huddersfield made massive

progress last year. It's been harder this season - why? A bit stuttering

and there are some reasons behind that, and some poor decisions from

us as well, but overall, bar one game, we've always been in positions

to win games and let ourselves down at the end. A case of losing our

attention. The game is 80 minutes, not 40, 50, 60. That is what we have

to think about. It would have been ideal to have all the players for a

game of this importance. You want your halfback playing. He seems to

have done enough training to get himself out there. He is a fit guy.

Do you do sentiment? You are coming back to your old place. Yeah, had

some great times here. The last four or five weeks of the three and a

half years weren't the best but I'm sure some of the players and other

people would have handled things a little differently but you get that

out of experience. The first three and a half years were nothing but

enjoyable and great time. I've got some good friends still the and some

of the guys playing today, I'd like to think I had a good impact on

their careers. Good luck. STUDIO: Let's look at the guys they

are playing against. How do Huddersfield look to you? A lot of

speed with Grix. A powerhouse in McGillvary. Murphy has a tough ask.

He is playing against a talented team. Joe Wardle I wouldn't have

problems with but it is a big aim for Murphy. These two are as good as

anybody else. Danny Brough is a man of steel and we saw his exploits in

the World Cup. Phil Robinson will probably mix and match a little bit.

Crabtree, the Robbie Savage lookalike, with Shaun Lunt running

around, they've had a terrific season so far. The back three have a

big challenge. This is where they need to compete really well. Jason

Chan and accomplished international, Brett Ferres a new international,

and Michael Lawrence. Chris Bailey, an experienced halfback, will help

with the direction. Watch out for Faiumu when he comes off the bench.

Antonio Kaufusi we've talked about. Always been a big boy. Big blokes

everywhere! That's what you learn when you do rugby league. There is

the Huddersfield Giants changing room. The man of steel is hidden in

the corner at the moment. We can't get a great view of him. We've

spoken about him already. There he is, right on cue. Let's hear from

Danny Brough. Danny Brough lifts the league leader

Shields! When we started this season, I was

hoping for a top four spot but to go on and win was pretty good. They

will savour this moment. I was pleased at the end of the season

when I got the awards but I put it down to when you play good players,

it makes you a better player. I got the call from Steve McNamara

in February and he said to me that I wasn't in his plans and he was going

to stick with others. There is no more I can do about that. I wasn't

in the squad so I just had to wait and hope Scotland came calling and

they did. Scotland asked me back so that's where I'm going to stay. I

think lads have heard me talk about it too much.

That was probably the best day I've ever had in rugby league, in the

match, and something I was so proud of, to be part of, and it was

something that... The fans that day and the homecoming on the bus is

something that you do want. The people were fantastic.

Last year we put a markdown. We can contend with the big boys but at the

start of this year, we haven't found that warm up to now. Last season we

had a bit of a bond and I think we need to get back to that. This week

we've got the league leaders. Seven out of seven and we are playing good

rugby. You can't hold anything back in this competition. You can't lose

this year. You'll be out! Nathan Brown is very tactical, a

very smart coach. I'm not saying the others aren't. But Nathan Brown can

pick things up and has the smart that some people don't have. Winning

the Challenge Cup is important but winning the league leaders

shield... Some people won't play in the Challenge Cup final in their

career which is pretty harsh, but that's the reality of life.

STUDIO: Interesting comparisons from Danny Brough. Can he lead his

Huddersfield side through this fourth-round tie in the Tetley's

Challenge Cup at home to St Helens? Both teams in the tunnel, making

their way out now. The road to Wembley starts here. We'll get the

thoughts of Paul Sculthorpe and Brian Noble at half-time. Jonathan

Davies has made his way to the commentary box, where he joins Dave

Woods. Huddersfield are more than capable

of adding to their silverware this year. They are against St Helens who

have started in sensational style this season. It really is an

exciting prospect here today. Danny Brough could have a big influence on

this game. This is how they are lining up.

Joe Wardle is back from his ankle problem. On the other side, Luke

Walsh is playing today. Here's been a revelation in the early season but

missed the last couple of games with a calf injury. Jon Wilkin is

suspended today. It really is an unpredictable outcome. Saints have

consistently shown they can hit the heights. Huddersfield, for all their

inconsistency, have had their moments. Will they do it today? The

perfect point to begin with four Saints. A penalty straightaway for

Saint Helens. This will now give them field position. As you say,

consistency is key for Huddersfield. They played superbly well against

Wigan in the opening game. There was a tour of the performance against

Leeds as well. -- a terrific performance. Huddersfield survived

that opening set. Yes, that pass was far too high. 226 points in seven

wins for Saint Helens this year. Huddersfield likes to move it around

a bit as well. Plenty of work to do from deep inside their own half,

Huddersfield. Craig Kopczak, Welsh international.

A terrific kick on the angle lab. -- there. A great kick to finish. I

think Adam Swift thought about catching it but let it running.

We've seen the Kyle Amor a few times on BBC television over the past two

years. Saint Helens have just gone up the

side of the rack. Good support by Jonny Lomax, a great tackle. That is

a very good hit. In the World Cup he was very much a star of the

campaign. A tough effort from both sides in defence in these early

stages. Here comes the final tackle in this

set. Whether that was caught in the wind or not, I'm not sure. Nobody

claimed it all went near it. I thought maybe Danny Brough would

have caught it. There's the up and under, all onside. The ball bounces,

no one claims it. I don't know why he tries to get it on.

Willie Manu has the explosive ability to go up the channels. But

not on this occasion. Almost through! You managed to drag

him down. Just as well he did. Looking for the kick, but it is

covered easily enough. I think they will have to watch Jonny Lomax. He

comes in as a second receiver. Support for the fullback is very

good. It is when years been moved to fullback by his coach that his

potency has come to fruition. -- when he has been.

He just measured that incorrectly. Good play from Danny Brough.

An attacking scrum for Saint Helens. Great variety. The early kick, and

now field position. Just watch. A brilliant cake. The winger hasn't

dropped back. That is very good play from Luke Walsh. A chance to hammer

the opponents line here. It is what he brings to this side, Luke Walsh.

A to this side, Luke Walsh. Eight horrific goalkicker, but his

organisation and everything. -- a terrific goalkicker.

The defence is good enough for the moment, but there are still tackles

to come. Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant from Adam Swift and Lance

Hohaia. Finishing in the corner. Not the first time Lance Hohaia has

thrown a dummy. On this occasion, they give him too much space. They

don't complete the tackle. This was what set up the field position. That

is a beautiful kick. Dummy, dummy, then put it in space. There is just

too much of a gap. To dummy runners and one just holds. I think it is

Jason Chan that gets held up in the defence. Comes across a bit too

late. He has had mixed reviews in his time at Saint Helen 's, but I

think the common consultants is that, alongside Luke Walsh this

season, he is at his most effective. The New Zealand World Cup

winner, of course, if you years ago. And Luke Walsh, the man who is the

heartbeat of this side. That was some brilliant plague. He just goes

through that whole. A bit of a triangle to go through. -- some

brilliant play. I think Nathan Brown was our guest when St Helens were

playing and it was Adam Swift's debut game. Huddersfield are leading

the tackle count at the moment, which tells you how hard they are

having to work. I'm sure they've done their homework. Saint Helens

just look that little bit sharper in the first ten minutes.

A bit of a gap developing on the right-hand side. He is a big

handful, Jermaine McGillvary. A measured kick. Good take by Turner.

Just not enough height on Matt. They've just got to make the easy

yardage. At the moment, the Saint Helen 's defence is coping easily.

12 times winners of the Challenge Cup, St Helens, the last of those in

2008. They might feel they're on the track here as Makinson puts the kick

through. Another glittering, superb St Helens

try. That is a great try again, from the quick play on the ball by Masoe.

They spot the space on the right hand side. They work the space for

Makinson and this is from the mass overdrive. -- the Masoe drive. A

lovely weighted kick. Roby... A simple pass, Makinson finishes it.

That is a great, great try. There's the gap from Brighton dropping

back. -- Broughton. Great support by Roby.

A fairly straight finish by the standards that Johnny Makinson has

set this season. He's scored some fabulous tries. The ninth try he's

scored in eight games and there's only one match he's failed to score

in, which was against the Salford Reds Devils. They've really done the

hard yards, St Helens. Masoe takes it up, a quick play of the ball,

then they take it wide. You've got to earn the opportunity to go wide.

You can see the confidence absolutely pouring from St Helens at

the moment. Not surprising, given the start of the season they've had.

How good is the second attempt? It is just going to drift so while St

Helens remain in the ascendancy, two goals missed. What a brilliant St

Helens try and on the back of this quick play of the ball from Mose

Masoe, Luke Walsh increases the opportunity, Jordan Turner releases

Makinson. They should have closed the play down there, Huddersfield.

Look at the number of blue shirts in the frame, backing each other up,

supporting each other. Makinson finishes in the corner. A brilliant

try. REFEREE: Surrender! 15 minutes

played, nothing to suggest so far that St Helens are going to suffer a

dip in form. Up to Huddersfield to dig deep and find a way back into

this game. A long way to go and Huddersfield need to show some heart

now. S Flanagan pushing for possession inside the Huddersfield

half. Broughton is the man who is going to

bring this back in. A beautiful kick to finish.

That says it all. First half possession is 70% to St Helens.

Territory 63%. St Helens fans in good voice. Huddersfield fans need

to find their voice. This is a very good kick. Beyond very good, it's a

brilliant kick! Absolutely brilliant! And when his side needed

it most, Danny Brough has come up with another scintillating 40-20

that puts his side from the brink of defence to the attack. He gets

behind his own player. He's got to check his run and then put a

magnificent kick in. When Huddersfield needed something to

happen on the field, whether it was a tackle, a break or a kick... That

should lift Huddersfield Giants now. A great opportunity for them.

Danny Brough prepares to feed the scrum. Huddersfield prepare to

launch their attack. First effort from Jason Chan. First time the St

Helens line has been under pressure in these early stages and Kopczak is

very nearly there. He dropped the ball backwards in trying to reach

out. Well, the referee, having initially said it was a knock-on, I

think now is just double-checking. Let's hear for the first time today

from our video referee Ian Smith. We're looking at how the ball came

out of Craig Kopczak's Hand. It's how the ball came out of this. He's

got hold of it there. He loses that. Yeah, loses that.

Just run it back, play it at full speed. Yeah.

Knock-on. Yeah, that's got to be a knock-on. In the field of play,

that, so it's going to be a no try scrum to St Helens. Well, there we

get it. No try and scrum to St Helens. But how close was that? Full

marks to Sean Long for showing the alertness. An interesting call. --

Shaun Lunt. I thought that could have been a try because I thought

the ball went back. The knock-on is given, though. Scrum to St Helens.

Those who are watching on the big screen here think that was just try

-- was a try. But Ian Smith, the video referee, said there was a

knock-on. So St Helens survived. Huddersfield missing out on their

opportunity, the first of the game so far, but St Helens have a chance

to bring it forward. Let's hear from Damien Johnson on the touchline.

Anthony Laffranchi didn't make the team today. You must have been

pleased with what you've seen. It's been a good start. It is a quality

Giants team that we had to get off to a good start and we've done that.

COMMENTATOR: He's on the field of play now. Here comes Lomax. Roth has

it. The sun has come out. If you get close to Mose Masoe you might think

it has gone back under the clouds again!

A clash of heads there. Kyle Amor has come off badly. Copped one right

on the head. Claiming it should have been another six but the referee has

not seen it that way. A difficult pass. I think he's twisted his knee

going down, Kyle Amor. Perfectly measured. Swift had to get up in the

field of play but was tackled in mid by McGillvary. A great kick and a

great catch by Swift. This ball is drifting away from him, he's taken

it in the air. A great take. Had it not been for the midair tackle, had

he taken it in the field of play, he'd have had to do something about

it. Another yard or two, it in the goal area. The accuracy of that kick

plate was spot on. Shame he took it in the air, really.

A bit of a stopper cheered because Kyle and more is still being

treated. -- a bit of a stoppage here. The referee is mindful of

making sure that he can get off. Looking a little bit uncomfortable.

We'll have to wait and see if he gets better but he'll do it on the

sidelines. I think it's a clash of heads first of all but then his legs

just gets caught under the Huddersfield player and he twisted

his knee. Don't forget, the draw for the fifth

round of the Tetley Challenge Cup coming up right after we finish the

commentary here. Lots of Challenge Cup ties taking place as we speak,

and some have already taken place, of course. You can see all the

action on Monday night at 11:55pm on BBC One HD in the north only, but

across the nation on Tuesday lunchtime at 1pm on BBC Two HD.

A little frustration for St Helens at the moment. This player is

complaining they are not allowing him to play the ball. James Roby

knocks it on. I think St Helens have been so

dominant in the first 20 minutes, we haven't seen much of the Giants. A

short pass by the usually impressive Brett Ferres.

They're playing lateral at the moment, the St Helens defence. They

were waiting for Crabtree. The try-line insight and Huddersfield

have one more dig in this set. Robinson will put the kick towards

the right-hand side. McGillvary has two reaching. The referee says it

went backwards but I thought it went forwards onto the head of Swift.

Lomax steps out of play and a dropout. A good little kick to

finish the set off. Like you said, we're not having much change from

the St Helens defence. This little kick for Chan. No option for Lomax.

A good, cool kick in the end. That gives Huddersfield possession back

again here. McGillvary has been in amongst the

tries this season. Six times he's been over the whitewash, including a

hat-trick in the opening game against Wigan. Often talked about as

a potential England with the -- England winger in the build-up to

the World Cup last year. Frustration for Brett Ferres because Wardlaw,

having run in front of him, has given away the penalty. They've just

got to make the hard yards. It just isn't happening for them.

Seems to be the fashionable penalty of the season so far. S some news

about Kyle a more. He has taken a bang to the left knee. He is trying

to loosen the joint and hopes to get back on very shortly. -- Kyle Amor.

Aid setback on the inside with Jordan Turner in support. -- a tip

back. Jodie Broughton is dropping back.

Broth again with a big searching kick downfield. -- Brough.

The first interchange that Huddersfield have made in the game

so far. This is good from Swift. An ankle tax from Danny Brough. A

desperate tackle by Danny Brough. Had to be made.

Just about got there. It hasn't stopped the momentum from St Helens.

They are still troubling the Huddersfield defence. A couple of

tackles still left to play. Robinson bumped in Medicare and there was

almost an immediate apology. -- bumped in mid air. He will just get

up and play on. Well done, Luke Robinson. He is a tough player.

Jonny Lomax realised what he'd done. He could've had a card, but I

think it's the right decision. And he just gets up. No dramas. Also a

relieving penalty from Huddersfield's point of view.

Back-to-back penalties here for Huddersfield. He pushes them over.

Keep them guessing until the last moment of impact. He has made a gap

for himself. Jonny Lomax does well to get across. Has he managed to

make his way over? He doesn't know. Let's put it up to the video

stages of this game, there are only four points in it. You can see Jonny

Lomax jumping. He saw the opportunity. You have to watch out

when Shaun Lunt is around. I think Shaun Lunt had a similar try back in

2009 which was disallowed, if I remember correctly. So, hard as

field are back in the competition again. -- Huddersfield. Three good

tries there, with good yardage. Never any intention is to challenge

for that, it was all about pushing him back. That was a great set. That

is a lot better, just the hard yardage made by the Huddersfield

Giants forward. Just checking if there was a challenge midair. Is he

in midair when he catches them. He tackles him before his feet come

down. That is a penalty. They will not like this. St Helens fans love

it because they a penalty. -- they have a penalty.

This is just what we needed. It affect right from Shaun Lunt. -- a

terrific try from Lunt. Here comes the sixth tackle with

Danny Brough. Again, a corkscrew type kick. Just overcooked a couple

of kicks, Danny. But he has been getting opportunities down the light

-- the right-hand side. They have not given penalties away, they've

kept on possession. They are back in again. Anthony Walker is fresh from

the interchange bench. Paul Wellens, he is making his 100 and -- 168

appearance today. That was very, very untidy. That was

difficult. A clever little kick and the last tackle. Very awkward for

Scott Grix. Paul Anderson is not looking happy, the Huddersfield

coach. Scott Grix knows what the mistake was. He knows his side are

under an awful lot of pressure as a result. St Helens are poised.

Jonny Lomax is like an extra halfback. He plays the game so well.

just about get there. Thrilling stuff from the Huddersfield Giants.

They are turning it up to try to keep St Helens penned down. This was

horrific. -- terrific. Paul Wellens will be remembered as

one of the great halfbacks of his generation.

Aaron Murphy has not played since the third week of the season. Today,

years getting a run in the centres. -- he is.

Well taken and well met. Some high quality -- it is a high

quality game so far today. The first of our Challenge Cup run.

Nathan Brown hoping his side will be going all the way to Wembley. Lomax.

That's a good run by Lomax. Here comes Wellens again. Grix has to

field that ball in and run it back and do work he. Turner with an

important challenge in the end. There is Bruff. Two tackles has

taken Huddersfield back to within two tackles of the half-way line.

Three takes them back inside St Helens territory. Here is Wood. Grix

gets it on to Wood. Wood has to duck and dive, but keeps it alive. Out it

goes to that right-hand side. He just held on. This is Robinson.

Murphy. Murphy reaching for the line. He doesn't quite get there.

They have gone the length of the field in five beats of the drum, but

here comes the last. Robinson's quick. Wardle will score.

Huddersfield get their second try and it is all square with half-time

looming. That was a great, great try. What a turn around in the last

15 minutes. Good yardage and then they've gone wide. What an exception

kick to finish this set. Great play. Great support. That's a lovely ball.

That's the forward pass. Grix again. This is the finish. It is a pinpoint

kick. It is easier to get above the defender. A brilliant try.

We have got a minute of the first-half remaining and when St

Helens led with 14 minutes gone, the expectations where there of a big, b

score in Saints favour. The way the game started, but Huddersfield have

dug deep and got themselves not just back into the competition, but

ahead. They are too good a side, the Giants. When they are good, they are

very, very good, but when they're bad, you know, they seem very, very

flat and that was the case in the first 10 or 15 minutes. Now, it is a

totally different side. St Helens have got a job on here to

try and keep this Huddersfield enthusiasm boxed up and they are

helped by the knock on. There is only about nine seconds left to

play. Again, they have done very well going down the right-hand side.

Tremendous, tremendous first-half. It is a game of two halves in the

first-half. Huddersfield dominated in the second 20.

What's your assessment of the way Huddersfield fought back? Fantastic.

I think the boys ripped in at the back in. They started to tire a

little bit. They were winning the battle, but as the game went on,

hopefully the energy will bite them in the back side later on. Paul

Wellens is with me. Are you disappointed the way you let

Huddersfield back in? It is tough and tight. We're still in from with

a chance and we'll keep fighting. Jonathan Davis said it at the end of

that first-half, it has been a half of two halves. There are your match

facts: Paul and Brian in the studio, what

do you make of the comment at the end, Paul, that St Helens started

with verve that maybe they tired themselves? That's how it looked, it

was a half of two quarters. Saints came out of the blocks and stormed

into a lead, but looked to tire as Huddersfield grew and grew in

confidence as well. They started bumping off the tackles and St

Helens have got themselves back into the game. Jonathan made the point in

commentary that Huddersfield due to the interchange benefited? I thought

David Faiumu and Bailey made a huge difference to the Huddersfield. They

made a lot of yardage and the confidence grew. They were back in

the game and it is a different game. If Saints started with more verve

and vigour, they started the kicking game which is something we discussed

pre-match between Walsh and Brough? Smart play to get the foot out and

catch the ball, but we spoke about the kicking game of both these two

beforehand, you know, this kick from Danny Brough was the wrong side of

the post. Big players for the teams at the right time and this led to

Saints first try. It did. Luke Walsh took it into the first try for St

Helens. Yes, they got their field position through that kick. It was

important they had to capitalise on that with a sketchy start from

Brough's kicking game. Luke Walsh highlights the people coming off the

sideline and having a go at Huddersfield. Luke Robinson and

Jason Chan don't work together. It is a great pass in itself to make

this to Swift because he is out there on the back. Jermaine

McGillvary was coming in to stop the play. With having a genuine half

back, he is not the kind of player that likes directing play. He is

more of a running man and having Luke Walsh in the side allowed him

to do that. Do you think he was duly criticised because of a lack of a

partner? He played full-back and hooker and he played seven and he

played six. It is difficult to find out where he wants to end up and

now, at six, with Luke, in the team it allows him to just play his own

game. Let's look at the Walsh/Brough head-to-head. Tackles are fairly

even. More kicking from Danny Brough. Would you expect that,

Brian, I suppose you would? The last half a dozen kicks were clever kicks

and concise kicks. We have seen ourselves he started the game a

little bit poorly in relation to the standard of how he kicks the ball.

Once he started kicking the ball well and they highlighted where they

were going, they looked a different team. I can't emphasise enough the

emphasis of David Faiumu. He beat the St Helens defender and gave them

a ruck win so they could play quicker and it made a huge

difference to Danny Brough's kicking game. Do you think they needed to

settle a bit, the Huddersfield players, they are the home side,

they know they have had a difficult start, they just needed to settle?

It was going to be a fast start to the game. Saints came out of the

blocks really taking it to them. Maybe that bit of fatigue set in

after the 20 minute period and Huddersfield just found their feet

in the game and as they got more and more into the game, the confidence

grew which gives you more energy anyway. We had a perfect of Saints

second try from Tommy Makinson. Walsh is the arc tegt.

-- architect. Look at the number of blue shirts. We are highlighting Tom

Makinson. You have not to let them get there. You have Roby and

Makinson, but that was a fabulous try. It was a distinctive finish.

Jonathan Davis, whatever he said before the show. I imagine if you

were coaching kids, you would be furious!

Put it down wi two hands. Huddersfield got themselves back

into it. We wouldn't have guessed 10-8 at half-time, would he? I

mentioned to Paul, I thought they were passive, but Robinson

highlights one of the players. The threat is where the ball is Lomax

has gone to get into position. Lance Hohaia has gone away. There is

opportunity for Shaun Lunt. Smart play from Lunt, but Saints

will be happy about their marking of defence. If you were coaching kids,

don't turn your back? A full-back doesn't want to get caught. You want

to deal with your media and it is easy to say from the commentary box,

but great spot from Shaun Lunt. The momentum was with Huddersfield? I

thought Huddersfield were a little bit passive and Saints were

happening to them, but the game changed. The momentum changed and

this kick exemplifies it. The kicks weren't perfect and there is great

competition and sometimes they go your way and sometimes they don't,

that's with a kick from Brough that puts Huddersfield in front. Brough

pulled us out of it there. Every time the kicks were missed, we

looked at each other going, "Did we really big them up at the start?"

Let's look at the match stats from the first 45 minutes.

There is not much between the lead, not much between any of those stats,

is there, let's be honest? What we see of Brough who is doing all the

work in relating to tackling. 14 is indication of how they are trying to

get to Lance Hohaia. Most points kicked, you can't separate the

teams. There is a lot and this game is finely balanced. Paul Wellens

summed it up, they have got us to the back end of the half and we have

to regroup and do what we were doing well. Warmsly winning the ruck and

working Huddersfield and going to the fringes, they will want to go

back to that. I will ask you both, what both sides need to do in the

second half shortly. Both coaches will be earning their money at

half-time. One man who is able to relax during our Challenge Cup

coverage is that man, Ray French. He has his BBC jacket on. He will be

doing work for local radio as well this afternoon. He will be giving

his thoughts to somebody there. Once he gets going, he is away. Let's

treat you to some of his Challenge Cup thoughts.

My first ever trip to Wembley for a Challenge Cup final was in 1953. My

dad's friends had arranged for a steam train to take all the workers

down to the match. Saturday morning, Buckingham Palace, Leicester

Square, Piccadilly. Finally, we got to Wembley. Saints with a red-hot

favourites. But Huddersfield did them. The problem was a halfback

called Peter Ramsden. He actually celebrated his birthday at that

match. His two tries really put Huddersfield on the way to victory.

His first was probably one of the most contentious tries ever scored

at Wembley. To this day at St Helens it is still referred to as a double

movement. It was level, ten apiece with five minutes to go. Peter

Ramsden did it again. At the end of the match, I cried my eyes out. My

dad said, don't worry. You'll be back, and you'll win. And I was, and

I did. Beautiful. Plenty more of those memories throughout the

season. This is what is happening in the fourth round of the cup at the

moment. That fifth round draw follows the

full-time whistle at Huddersfield. You will find out who your site gets

at the conclusion of this game. You can see all the highlights on the

Super League show. Looking at that dressing room, what

will Nathan Brown be saying? I think he will be telling them to get back

to what they were doing in the first 20 minutes. In defence, get the

aggression back. Stop getting bumped up by the Huddersfield players. How

difficult is it to get back the momentum when you start with it and

then you lose it? I think half time is good for them. They can regroup

and have a breather and hopefully start the second as they started the

first. And what about Paul Anderson? I assume he will tell them more of

the same. You took the words out of my mouth. They just need to promote

the ball to the fringes better. Not waiting the St Helens to come

towards them. Take different stride patterns. All bets are off because

both teams will be starting again this second half and putting their

plans into place. Quite often the media overhyped the slightest thing,

but given how they've started this season, how big a 40 minute is this

for Huddersfield? Obviously this will be massive for their season. It

is one of their main targets this year. They have struggled with the

expectation of being shield winners. It is that trapdoor element of this

conversation. You cannot afford to make any mistakes. There is a lot of

expectation on St Helens as well. But they've dealt with that over the

years. But this is a new team with a new halfback partnership. They've

won seven games and they haven't been under pressure like this.

Saints are out, they are still waiting for Huddersfield to come

out. How did the conversation go at half-time? I think we are pleased

with how we started the game. In the first 20 minutes we were on top. I

think we really let the speed of the game fall in Huddersfield's favour

and by the end, they were controlling the speed. They were

playing the ball very quickly and that caused problems. We need to get

control back. What is needed to break big aim" Mac we need to take

opportunities. -- what is needed to break the game? We need to take

opportunities. It is drizzling slightly, I'm not sure how that will

affect things. Off we go. It should be a cracking second half between

two sides of high pedigree who have produced some really good moments

but also moments they would rather forget at times.

A very good finish to a very efficient opening set for

Huddersfield Giants. What a difference to the start of the first

half. Robinson just puts a little kick in. Luke Walsh is going to

feed. What happened in the Huddersfield dressing room at

half-time? Well, Paul Anderson described it as too heavyweight

boxers going toe to toe. Keep turning over the ball, make sure

we're playing in their half of the pitch. Pressure, but enjoy it as

well. I don't think Kyle and more is going

to be carrying on. He had bad knee injury in the first half, remember.

-- Kyle Amor. That is a shame. St Helens is being forced to work

hard from deep inside their own territory. Anderson will be happier

with these sets and how they have completed them. It was a knee

problem in the first half, it looks more like a chest problem for Kyle.

Or I think this might be the GPS system they are applying. That kick

was blocked. Definitely another set of six. As I was saying, they have

little bumps on their shoulder Blades. Those GPS systems tell the

coaching staff everything that is going on. Heart rates, speed, what

they are doing. I think it hurt his ribs. Huddersfield are

congratulating themselves for having forced a fumble. A good start,

pressurising their opponents. The referee gives a penalty for

Huddersfield. He is on the floor. I think the tackle was complete,

wasn't it? The tackle goes Huddersfield's way. A burst of

expectation from Huddersfield fans. You feel there is more to come here.

They are only a couple of yards away from the line. Where is he going?

Still going. A good effort. Jason Chan bouncing on the balls of his

feet. At least two tackles in the bag to go for Huddersfield. And St

Helens have possession back again. They had the numbers on the

right-hand side but just could not release the ball. A missed

opportunity there for the Giants. What it reflect from Jordan Turner.

-- what a terrific pass. Last tackle in this set. Should be

easy, and it was. Don't think Walsh is going to be too happy with that

kick. Not enough height, very easy. Eorl Crabtree is the longest serving

player by a long way. He used to be a safety steward at this season. You

wouldn't argue with him, would you? Some of the other scores there at

the top of the screen. St Helens is trailing by two points,

having started so strongly in this game.

Walsh putting it high. There is a little bit of a stumble there. Grix

has come up with it in the end. They will be happy with that,

Huddersfield Giants. Again, not a threatening kick by Luke Walsh. It

put Huddersfield in the corner. Danny Brough is behind the 40 meter

mark. He is not happy with that, is he? No. Getting the defensive line

in place. The 1953 Cup Final, the Peter

Ramsden final, the last time Huddersfield won this competition,

this year, they were in finals, when they were beaten by St Helens in

2006 at Twickenham and Warrington in 2009 at Wembley, but it has been a

long time between cheery drinks for Huddersfield in terms of that

competition. They won the League Leaders' Shield for the first time

in over eight decades. Another good pass from Wellens.

It is Josh Jones '42nd consecutive game. Grix is underneath it. Oh, it

is an awkward bounce. It is going to be taken. Manu, has he squeezed in?

The referee is Hague alsecond look. No, he is not going to give it. He

is always going to go to the video referee, isn't he? Well, he is going

to have a word with the touch judge first.

The referee decides that he is going to offer it upstairs. On side, off

side. Here is Ian Smith, the video referee.

UMPIRE: It is from the kick. If you can pause it on his foot so we can

pause it there. Right, so we've got Lomax down here. These three, yes.

Run it through. OK. Lomax stays out. So just go back again to the kick,

please Ken. Let me track the players again. Just go back to the kick

again. Just pause it on his foot there. Right, so number 22 and

number 9 are in front so run that through, please. So where does he

run? He runs. Pause it there. That's him waiting for the ball. Yes. Just

make sure that he is in front. One more. One more frame, please. Go

forward. He is within 10. It is a no try penalty. No try penalty. He is

within ten meters. Well, no try. It is the rule. It is probably the most

frustrating rule in rugby league. The law is an ass frankly. He might

have been about 9.5 yards. Ian Smith gets it spot on and had he not

disallowed the try, he would have made the wrong decision. It is to

the letter of the rule, but if ever a rule needed changing. I mean, what

interference did he have? None whatsoever. 11 minutes of the second

half played. Huddersfield are in the lead by 10-8.

There is no certainty. Here come Huddersfield. Jones comes in to make

the tackle on Chan. Here is Craig Kopczak. The short

pass. That's a great line there looking for the off load. Just

nearly. Instead, it is St Helens who hand it back.

Lomax. It is tight and tense. There is two points in it. The middle

section of this second half is looming large now. St Helens are

making descent ground here. They have got a couple of tackles to play

with. Roby looks to t left-hand side. There wasn't a gap.

Walsh is the specialist. A high kick from Makinson.

Luke Walsh has gone too far on the last two or three occasions. It is

difficult for the outside backs though.

Four tackles gone. Huddersfield are still inside their own half. Brough.

Now Chan. Chan coming back on the angle, Walmsley snuck in there to

make the challenge. That's a good kick. A very good kick from that

position. Well, Anderson is happy to compete in these sets. Where they

are finishing, he wants to play the game in the St Helens quarter. That

being the case for the first 14.5 minutes. You can't get much more

balanced than that, can you, territory? A thoughtful Paul

Anderson. Here is Roby. Who do you fancy from here? How do you see this

unfolding? At the moment, you have to say that momentum and the control

of the game is with the Huddersfield Giants, but we know how quickly that

can change in this game. They are two quality sides of the discipline

has been good in the second half as well. They haven't just - oh, I said

that. Commentators curse! That's what will happen, we haven't had an

easy penalty where they have given field position. This is the first

opportunity. How sloppy that is. That's the difference, small, small

margins and the difference. Now they will have field position. Well, it

is still raining and the sun is out as well. There will be a rainbow

somewhere at the end of it and the pot of gold is a Wembley Final. And

these two sides will fancy their chances of going to, but win today

is the first big task. Roby rolling into that half-back position again.

Here is Walsh offering it in to young Alex Walmsley. Alex Walmsley a

product of the Championship. There is one or two knocking about in

Super League now. Alex Walmsley caught the eye of a number of clubs.

He could have had the pick of six or seven, but chose St Helens.

This is Hohaia. Walsh. Forward by Greenwood. This is the last now. So

on to Walsh again. The kick. Broughton will fancy his chances. It

is another simple one. You could see he was angry with himself, Walsh. He

was shouting at himself. It is too easy for the Huddersfield to stop

that movement. That's a little bit too far.

Walmsley is not able to get out of the way and it is incumbent for him

to get out of the way. It now gives Huddersfield field position. Brough.

Craig Kopczak. Robinson gets the pass away and here comes Grix.

Support there. Finish by Lunt. I don't think he has been back on the

field that long, has he? Oh, hang on. Hang on!

REFEREE: Time off. Obstruction is what they're looking at. This looks

like an obstruction, please. Let's hear from Ian Smith the sole

arbiter. REFEREE: We're looking for

obstruction. Does he catch the ball on the outside? He does. Can you jog

that one back, please? Runs across. So nice and slow this, please. Nice

and slow. So the angle that the lead runner is coming through there. He

is running the right angle. Does the man catch the ball on the outside

shoulder? He does. He goes through the gap. There is nothing wrong with

that. If you can go to the grounding, please.

Just run this through. Yes. Yes, we're happy with that. He grounds it

fine. That's a try. That's a brilliantly executed try.

Well, he had a nervous afternoon, hasn't he, Shaun Lunt? Twice he will

say Ian Smith has got it right because he got two out of three in

his favour. And that might be a big, big moment here because it is a six

point gap all of a sudden. And if Brough kicks this, an 8 point gap

and that is a two score difference. It means that St Helens would have

to score twice to get themselves back in the lead and over it goes.

Over it goes from Brough. 16 points to Huddersfield. 8 for St Helens.

Are they inching closer here, Huddersfield, to a place in the next

round? The timing of his run which releases Grix. Backing up on the

inside as all good number 9s. Jason Chan deserves a slice of that cake.

That's how you run a dummy run. It is very, very important, the dummy

run of Chan created that opening from which a try was scored. How

much does St Helens have to show now? We've got to get back on top.

They will be disappointed, Luke Walsh with the last few kicks. We

have got to take the opportunities and we finished with good kicks that

get points or repeat sets. It is a touch by a St Helens hand.

It is back. If he carried on in the direction he was going, there was an

obstruction just developing. Kopczak was just ahead of him.

Remember St Helens scintillating this season, seven wins out of seven

and they have been magnificent within that run as well, but today,

Huddersfield who have been up and down are very much on the up.

Robinson. He tracked him all the way. Tracked him down. As Paul

said... Walsh and off he goes. Grix just managed to flick his boot,

otherwise Walsh would have gone the distance. Then there is a little bit

of a disagreement. Lovely ankle tap. Now it will be a

penalty. He didn't do anything wrong, did he? I didn't think there

was much in that. I'm not sure what Jermaine McGillvary was guilty of

there. 30 metres out. St Helens have five

tackles to go. Huddersfield need to hang on in this set. They do not

want to give their opponents any opportunity.

A cluster of defenders there. Never much risk of going much further.

Penalty! Offside, they were. Six tackles to have a real go at the

Huddersfield line. They have slowed the play of the ball down.

Huddersfield are working overtime on their own line.

Penalty for St Helens. They have to keep their composure. I don't think

it makes much of a distance. -- difference. Danny Brough complaining

there is inconsistency in the refereeing. There we go, ten

penalties to five. The last thing Huddersfield need is for Daniel

Brands to get into an altercation with the referee. -- Danny Brough.

He has gone on his head. This is where it takes off. Well, it looked

nasty, didn't it? This could be crucial. This could be a card or

report. I think he's OK. He got up and reacted to the tackle, but it

was a silly, dangerous tackle. A ridiculous tackle. Jonny Lomax

where's the head guard because of a very nasty injury as a schoolboy.

That is very, very dangerous. It was as a result of that injury that all

schoolboys now wear helmets. It is a red card! Huddersfield are down to

12! You have to say, you cannot complain with that. I have no idea

what was going through his head. He could've just held it up for enough

time not to drop him on as head. -- his head. Such a dangerous tackle.

He looks to be OK though. A big hole in the Huddersfield defence line

now. Huddersfield fans trying to get

behind their side, to lift their team, if they can. And Tommy

Makinson seems to do that every week! He loves the spectacular, and

he's done it again. Second of the day before Tommy Makinson. St Helens

are back in the game. A moment of madness by Brett Ferres, and Tommy

Makinson get in at the corner. He is an absolutely sensational finish. I

think it was Turner that created this opportunity. He takes to

defenders with a one-handed off-load. They are a man short on

the left-hand side, and he made them pay. What a season he is having,

Tommy Makinson. Eight appearances, ten tries. Walsh has nailed the

kick. 16 points for Huddersfield but now St Helens have 14 of their own.

Brian. A great finish but Walsh deserved a slice of the cake as

well. And take your hat off to Turner.

We spoke earlier to Paul Sculthorpe... Oh, there will be a

knock-on. We talked earlier about the character St Helens have to

show, but now it is the character Huddersfield will have to show. They

need to control the ball and finished their set and try to get a

repeat set. If they don't get points, they play the clock down

with a repeat set. 11.5 minutes to play and Huddersfield still have the

lead, but they are a man short. Now it is the turn of St Helens to

hang on here. They cannot afford to concede points.

Craig Kopczak dropped it. It would've been difficult stop him. He

was nearly there. Ten minutes of the contest remaining

and it remains unsettled. Just as we expected here today, to quality

teams. -- two. St Helens were involved in a very

tight game last week against Leeds and they scored in the final moments

to clinch it. The fifth round draw coming right

after this. But we could yet have extra time here. We've seen one of

those already this weekend. On Thursday night the score was 37-36.
