Quarter-Final: Warrington v Wigan Rugby League: Challenge Cup

For me, it's about making that first tackle count. Inspiring those around

you. Running through the walls, wearing your heart on your sleeve.

If you get knocked down, get back up. And don't let them see you. Get

hurt. On the pitch, they called me Psycho. But I never played rugby

league. I've always run with the walls. --

I've always run with the Wolves. Their wounded right now, but you

never forget how to bite. The Warriors are hurting as well. But

they always rise to the challenge. Two tribes, won the prize. Come on,

Warrington! Not the most impartial opening week

ever done to a rugby league show but I wasn't going to be the one to tell

him to be more balanced, he's a very scary man! This is a repeat of last

season's Super League Grand Final, Warrington against Wigan in the

Challenge Cup. They both struggled in different ways this season but a

win today could salvage what has been a difficult season for both.

And with me for this quarterfinal, two current players, Jon Wilkin and

Jamie Jones Buchanan. And Brian Noble in between them, Brian Noble

MBE! Which has been awarded to you today! Thank you very much. A bit of

a shock and absolutely thrilled for the game of rugby league. If this

can spread the word and get someone else recognition. Really proud with

my family. I know you're more cup double when we hammer you and take

the Micky Adams you, but excuse us for being self-indulgent, we love

working with you so we are all very proud of you here. Congratulations.

Thank you. I went to the movies yesterday and I saw guardians of the

galaxy and I cried, I'm not going to cry today. You have gone in for

sartorial elegance. Something like that! Let's talk about the game

today, what are you expecting from Warrington and Wigan? Two teams to

go out there and where their heart on their sleeves. This is the

Challenge Cup, so what gone on in the league is irrelevant. We've got

one of the best seats in the house, a massive crowd, looking forward to

good afternoon. I think we want to see the best of both sides. In Super

League, they've been struggling, that is well-documented how they've

struggled. The Challenge Cup at huge opportunity for that to get out of

the window. I am looking forward to seeing the best of both of them. We

got potential for a cracker of a day, the weather is perfect, it's an

exciting Challenge Cup quarterfinal. Does the fact that both teams are

struggling, does that at more to the occasion? It will with the scrutiny

of the fans, but they get the chance to have a blank piece of paper

today. A lot of players back for both teams so they'll be hoping to

show the positive side of what they're capable of May have strong

teams. There is an element of pressure, the season is over for the

losers. In 2009, Warrington won at the Challenge Cup but finished tenth

in the league. It's the separation of the competition. It's a separate

competition to the Super League, this is completely different, and

the recent history is behind them, they will give it their all today.

Would you say more pressure? I think there's a lot of pressure on both

sides. The big thing that I see is the lack in confidence. Or in some

art lacking confidence at the moment. -- Warrington are lacking

confidence, that can disappear quickly but they can get it back

quickly. Confidence can come back if they have a positive start. The

demons are on your shoulder, but it will be important that both teams

start well, because whoever goes behind first, the demons will start

up saying, here we go again, another long day. There have been two

Challenge Cup quarterfinals all ready. Let's start with Thursday.

All of the pressure has been on Wakefield in these early stages. He

rolled it backwards, and it's dropped over the line by Lannon.

Murdoch-Masila now, getting that reputation of being unstoppable at

that kind of distance. Eight metres out, right in front of the sticks. A

bit of a vessel. Evalds sees a path through that no

one else could see. To go one way and die another, and plunge over the

line to score the first Salford try. The challenge for Wakefield, this

could go either way... This is a Murdoch-Masila, what that is! Greg

Johnson the scorer. Salford are celebrating. They think with some

justification that there are celebrating a place in the second --

in the semifinal. He dropped a pass for Kopczak who

rips a whole through the Wakefield offenders. And sheer determination

takes into the goal line. The Salford fans on their feet.

There is a kick downfield, caught and he dropped the ball backward and

Liam Finn will score. The try is given. It's full-time here.

Centrefield, the exchange comes back. Has he got it down? Stevie

Ward might have forced his way over and he has done.

Fumbled behind the line and leads past again, Brett Ferres with the

second school. Brett Ferres is through, Harper

stops him but he has got it away. His body is certainly over.

Complains that he is knocked on that the referee does not agree.

Ash Handley with a two-handed dive in the corner, that is the fourth

try, a long time coming. Carl Ablett over the try line, Leeds

Rhinos with their first points of the second half. They are 40 metres

out. Back on the inside, he is so clear.

Leeds Rhinos are in again. A little bit more wind in their sales now,

Leeds. They appear to be running harder. They look like they've got

an extra player on the pitch, and Ash Handley is away. It's too easy

for Leeds at the moment. He had two players on his outside,

he went inside and he was brought down by James Lockwood. Try save but

Leeds Rhinos should have scored, but they do now. Singleton makes no

fuss. Back-to-back scores from Brad

Singleton. And they are home now as they hit 50. Last one for Leeds

Rhinos, Baxter Sutcliffe. Ryan Hall caught the ball and

planted it in one fluid motion right on the try line.

best, they had a lot of difference shapes and strategies are so they've

been in a good time. Before, I asked Jamie Vardy Leeds. What's the

difference about Salford this year? They survived in the skin of 30s.

It's something Wigan talk about later on, it's errors. Salford have

made the least errors in Super League. They move the ball a lot but

they do it with a real clinical position. And they've got a lot of

nations working. Michael Dudson executing everything for them. And

there's a real change in their mentality. They've also got Flanagan

in the middle of the field, a good mate of mine, he's really solid and

brings all of the energy and attention to detail to the middle of

the field. Quite a dangerous side. People like Murdoch-Masila have got

that energy in the edge. It's like starting a small car, he was

outstanding in that game. Not just because he's a friend. I'm biased,

predominantly because he's a friend! He's pretty good as well. Salford

started with the point reduction, they're on the back foot, but they

had better games every week. How come double what it for Leeds -- how

comfortable was it for Leeds last night? Not that comfortable, we had

all of the ball in the opening exchanges and they withheld

everything. We had to play some good football. We scored a lot of points,

but the big gratifying point was zero, we conceded no points and we

saw the people like Adam Cuthbert and dummy half, it was like watching

an old player isn't the 70s. He's a real school forward and he brings

another dimensional. For Leeds in the second half last night, the

shackles were off, when they start playing like that, Joel Moon comes

across and linking up with Calum Watkins, when they play like that,

they are so dangerous. That element, both of these people have spoken

about them about the confidence, I think it's about trust and belief in

each other. Sometimes when you're not playing so well, we think it's

lack of confidence, but its trust and belief that somebody's going to

be there to accept that pass when you do certain things. Adam

Cuthberts and is the prime example for Leeds, when he's on his game,

flow very well. Let's go to the team today. Let's show you the teams in

the Super League table. Sorry about this, John, Huddersfield

beat Saints, don't shake your head at me! I had to mention it! I don't

want to get hammered by Saints fans. That win for Huddersfield puts them

above Wigan. So we can come here to Warrington today with the Wolves in

ten. Let's focus on Wigan today, Joe Burgess spent last year playing in

the NRL. This season he's back here and his continued where he left off.

Have you enjoyed being back at Wigan.

It's good, it's home. It was weird when I came back, nothing has

changed. It felt like I'd not left, that's how weird it was. All the

jokes were still the same. It was good.

What's a catch by Joe Burgess to finish! 22 years of age, do you feel

like one of the seniors in the squad because this year a lot of younger

players have had to come in because of injury? Yes, it felt like I had

to take that role. I've got just less than 80 games and my game belt

which is quite a lot. A lot of people say, how hard is it for those

lads? It was easy for me because when I started playing, I had quite

a lot of experienced players around me. Where is this time I've got a

bit of experience, but nowhere near what I played under. What about

Australia, what was that like? It was the best experience, not just on

the pitch but off the pitch. I still had my mum looking after me, doing

the washing. So it is the other side of the world, I was doing all that

for myself. It was a big step for me and my family. The main reason I

came back was, I wasn't getting gametime and that's the reason I

went over there. I was just missing playing my hobby again. What's the

biggest lesson, apart from the life lessons, what's the biggest rugby

league lesson? The intensity, it'll be like this game every week. You

look at the team that will play against Warrington, the property is

that 12 or 13 of you will have come to the caddy system. What is it

about the Wigan Academy that makes it so successful? It's the water!

I'm not sure, it's a bit rugby town, everyone enjoyed it, you'd enjoy it

when you're younger and you take it on when you're older. And because of

this Academy, you've all been together for so many years, you get

the oppression the social side can be good as well. We've had a few us

recruit you get the impression the social side can be good. We've had a

few fancy dress parties. I got quite a few party pictures! This is a club

that is used to success, you've been doing it tough recently, seven

without a win. How does morale get maintained? It's all about sticking

together. You cannot go behind each other's back saying, it's his fault

or his fault. This is the time to stick together. This is a big game,

a Wembley final at the end of it, whatever you do in the season, if

you get to Wembley, that's all forgotten. Exactly, that's my goal

at the start of the year. I was looking forward to the Good Friday

the Magic Weekend and hopefully getting Wembley. I think Wembley is

a real goal. # Because happiness is just a thing

called Joe! # And Brian will now tell us who Joe's

team-mates are. The massive team today, Sam Tomkins

coming back. Anthony Jelley will give pace -- Anthony Gelling will

give a lot of power to the centres. An international pairing with New

Zealand and England. Joe Tompkins moved to this front row. New Zealand

internationals alongside him. And then all England international back

line led by England captain Sean O'Loughlin.

Southee islanders Willie Isa and Taulima Tautai will partner.

Sam Powell, local boy, returning this week and nine Saturn. Thank

you. -- and Ryan Sutton. The weather conditions here at the

Halliwell Jones Stadium today are absolutely brilliant, a blue sky,

they have just picked up the moment where the cloud comes over. It's a

really warm, I've had to take my jacket off. That may have an impact

on the decision-making today because once sweat gets onto the ball, it

can get to be slippery. George Williams, one of the stars for the

Wigan team. A brilliant decision maker when he has got ball in hand,

but he's picked up over the last couple of seasons with his running

game. Ball in hand, he is devastating. He'll be tasked with

moving the team around the field alongside his half-backs partner

from the New Zealand international team, Thomas Leuluai. Been there,

done that, got the T-shirt, silverware in every competition in

this game. One of the stalwart of this sport. To be able to get the

confidence of the team heading in the right direction. If they do

their job properly, they will be able to release this man. He went

under the knife last week, Sam Tomkins. -- last year. Your first

game back in ten months, how you "Like feeling good, excited, -- how

are you feeling? I'm feeling good, excited. I select I've been ready

for a few weeks so I'm glad to be here. You picked a good game,

quarterfinal of the Challenge Cup. Yes, we wanted as many senior

players as we can on the field so this was always going to be a game I

wanted to be back for. And Jamie, but as important as his

ability, his ability as a senior player. We heard about Joe Burgess

talking about senior players being there to help him and they haven't

had that this season. At the top and bottom end. In that Burgess video,

the young people coming through, what really stands out is how loyal

they are. They go to Australia and come back, they want to play the

Wigan, they love Wigan. They want to play in the red and white jersey.

They are full of enthusiasts. Tomkins is massive and having him in

the team will lift every single player. They will get an immense

amount of confidence. Also, Gelling, he could be really good. Talking

about Wigan getting back to form, releasing Tomkins, that was when

there were injuries. I think they could get back to that date. You

need balance in any sport, between youth and experience. Gelling Italy

six and he's back, Tomkins is 28, -- Gelling is 26. Bateman is 24 but has

had 84 club experiences. Three out of the four art internationals and

have played at the highest level. The intensity required and the

leadership qualities they'll bring will stand them in good stead today.

Shaun Wane was really keen, it Sam said, to get experienced people back

to get this game, because you need people to the steady the ship as

well as the young and excited talent. You have been looking at

some of Wigan's play, and their defence, for you, isn't what it

should be or what it was. Wigan are usually robust and resilient. Their

goal-line defence hasn't been so. This was the game recently, Wigan

are always working together and are connected but in this game they were

not. There's a couple of reasons, me and Jamie talked before. A lot of

the rucks, Wigan were quick near their line. That leads to

unstructured defence. It's surprising how many Wigan defenders

are left on the floor, or scattered at the ruck. It led to several tries

in this game. It uncharacteristic from their defence. Yes, Wigan

usually squeezes the life out of you. Everybody looks at the big play

when they come together, but Wigan aren't getting one side, not getting

the right numbers. A big word that is going to be aborted is trust.

It's hard to trust when the ruck is not being one. A question for our

pundits here, is that lack of trust about the changes in the Wigan team?

We are talking about experience, and wanting experience does on the field

is allowing you to change what's going on in the middle of it. So if

things aren't going well, you've got enough brains between you to go, we

need to do this, work harder from the inside. Whatever it be,

experience gives you the opportunity to do that and Wigan have not had

that experience. John is an internationally experienced player,

people look to him to make decisions. That's what Wigan will

look to today, when things aren't going well, those experienced

players to make those decisions. We will look at Warrington in a moment

but we're going to hear from both head coaches now.

Tony, is the key for your guys today to cut out those individual errors

and give yourself a chance? Yeah, some of that. We've probably been

our worst enemy at times. During some of our matches. But we

certainly needed to defend better than what we have been in the last

little while. It isn't just what we do with the ball, it's what we do

without the ball. We need to have a big improvement there. I'm sure we

will today. The guys have trained really well and are really keyed up

for this one. You've got a fair few names back, Sam Tomkins, how good to

have him back? Fantastic, the way he loves training and what he can do on

the field is unbelievable. So please to come and have him back, we have

missed in this year. He's a really important member of our team. And

you got a few experienced names out you, has there been a selection

headache or are they all straight back in? Straight back in. The way

they've trained, we've done a great job with the players and they're all

fit and ready to go. No question, Anthony Gelling, Sean O'Loughlin,

all ready to play. You have been keen to play down that your season

pivots on this in terms of silverware, is that to take the

pressure off the guys? No, just the reality of it. We're keyed up for

it, we want to get through to the next round, it's about taking care

of what's in front of them. And that's a very good team in Wigan

today. So we're just focusing on what we can do, and not what's down

the track too much. We've got to make sure that we deal with what's

in front of us immediately. We're just receiving news that Kevin

Brown is out after they's game for Warrington, he did come out and warm

up but he went back into the changing room for treatment and were

told that he's out for this game. We'll bring you more news on that

when we get it. We'll bring you the thoughts of our pundits shortly.

Let's focus on Warrington as a whole. Runners-up in the Grand Final

last year, in the Challenge Cup, and they at a great start this season by

beating Brisbane in the World Club Challenge. Thanks for your support,

you work eagerly out of the corner of your eye when I got that wrong!

But it's not gone great for Warrington since then.

This will send the message that Warrington are the team to be

beaten. # Hello, darkness, my old friend,

I've come to talk with you again. # # and a vision that was landed in my

brain still remain. # and the sound of silence.

It has been a tough season and it could be a tough afternoon because

the last few minutes Kevin Brown was pulled out of this game for

Warrington. With more news on that and how they are going to play this

afternoon here as a reporter. Kevin Brown, I think he did not last

a single run when they were warming up about five or ten minutes ago.

Apparently it is a foot injury that has caused him to pull out.

Warrington have a completely star-studded squad anyway.

Gidley and Stefan Ratchford have worked together before. What they

need to do is focus on severely all, the big boys. Darren Clarke, Ashley

Sims, International is, they have the fire power to put Wigan under

pressure. This was Kevin Brown in the warm up.

You can see the grimace and the shake of the head. Not good. He was

out last week with a foot injury, this was the defeat against

Castleford last weekend. Obviously he has not recovered enough to play

in this Challenge Cup quarterfinal. That was him in earlier heading down

the tunnel. He is out and Brian will tell us who replaces him and the

rest of the Warrington team. A huge responsibility on Stephan

Ratchford to give this team a lift, the second appearance for Will

Dagger on the wing and powerhouse Tom Lineham completes the back

three. Equally adaptable in the centre, Jack Hughes and Ryan Atkins.

Kevin Brown misses out today but Dec Patton comes in. A big

responsibility on his partner Kurt Gidley. Mike Cooper and Ashton Sims

internationals have to help Daryl Clark. Benjamin Jullien, Joe

Philbin, the young Warrington player and international Joe Westerman

locking the scrum. Dummy have run and hooker Brad Dwyer. Prop George

Clingan with the huge job to do. I always think as fans when somebody

pulls out in the warm up we think it is really dramatic. How much of the

negative will it be for those Warrington players? Disheartening.

The last five or six minutes is difficult, watching that. When you

go into a game like this the last thing you want to do, it is not the

pain you are worried about, it is letting your team mates down. You do

not want to be a hindrance. Watching that the key takes me back to last

year. It is awful. You start to doubt yourself. Have I ever been any

good? In my case, probably not. I go back to that word, trust, you have

to trust in your preparation, trust in your coating and trust in what

your team-mates can do. He was carrying this injury last week, so

being realistic Dec Patton was on the bench in the likelihood that if

Kevin pulled out in the warm up he would go in. These things are talked

about. They would have been prepared for it. That said, losing Kevin

Brown is a huge blow but I think Warrington are prepared. It can have

the disheartening effect that Jamie has talked about on it and have the

galvanising effect John has mentioned. Dec Patton is used to

playing a mystery demand starting and in many people's IAC should have

been starting in the first place. They will be ready. You mentioned

about Salford and errors and how they have committed the least number

of errors in Super League this season and yet the opposite is true

for Warrington. Yes, it is so important, controlling possession

and maintaining possession and starving the opposition of

possession is so important. They have made a lot of small cynical

errors in contact but what it is doing is crippling them in terms of

energy and they have made a lot of errors coupled with one of the

highest missed tackle totals in the competition which is a toxic

combination. When you are making errors it makes everything much more

difficult. It is not what they do with the ball, it is what you do

without it. What to do with the ball affects what to do without it. It

can be very dangerous when you have that. When it goes wrong it can be

terrible and it looks bad as well. There's a couple of things

tactically. Warrington are known for running out of there are half, Matty

Russell, Stefan Ratchford, Daryl Clark, that gives them quickly so

they can running teams and exploit their weaknesses. They are missing

Russell and Hill and they have not managed my because they have not

completed, to put much pressure on the defence. Warrington's strength

is their weakness. Their strength as they are unpredictable. Fast, quick,

dynamic, but that is their weakness because the light. Sure when you are

not going well and the lack of direction leads to errors so your

strength and weakness are often the same thing. If you are unstructured

and you have a freedom about you and yet you are struggling, you

mentioned last season, you are right with self-doubt. Do you tried to

hard which is then a bit of a problem in unstructured play? Yes,

you can do. It is forgetting about what has gone on in previous weeks.

This is a separate competition. They have to wear their hearts on their

sleeves and I love that word galvanise. The Challenge Cup has to

be the most galvanising competition in my career. One of the most ad

first moments of my career. Look at the beauty of the Challenge Cup, it

is galvanising. For Warrington, if they get all of those bets right

today they are in a huge... They have a huge chance to win the game.

When they run out of dummy half... Daryl Clark is looking dangerous and

they are rolling you down the field, that is very difficult to deal with.

Wigan have a lot of experience and defensively are fully equipped to

deal with Warrington. If Warrington get on the front foot and play the

ball quickly and destroy Wigan through the middle they could have a

great day. For both coaches when your teams are struggling, for

different reasons, it is about finding the balance as the head

coach, is it not come to want to change things and help your team but

not micromanage? We have to muck unbelievably experienced coaches who

will know how to do that. They have to trust the courts that they can

believe this is the kind of football weekly. Wigan will go back to what

they have been playing. Two slight differences, Wigan have met a lot of

people for a lot of the season. Warrington have not had the trust

and belief to play how they wanted. Both coaches will know what to do.

It is about the trust and belief in them to do it. When you are losing

the tendency is to overanalyse and when you are winning the tendency is

to under analyse. You never want to be in the extreme is. You do not

want to overanalyse or under analyse. You have to mag experienced

coaches who know how to navigate the middle zone. Also knowing when the

time is to change the style of rugby that has been successfully

previously. If it is not working how long do you give it before you try

something different? That is a great question. It is very difficult. It

is trial and error but you have to rely on the experienced players. A

lot of them have been through these periods before. They are learning

every time they go out. It is digital, you learn. Whether you win

or lose is not as important as how you feel on the Saturday morning. It

is the journey. I do not think Warrington will change the way they

play but it has risk and reward. If the roads are good, what to Wigan.

Wigan for me are slight favourites because of the size, they are going

to pound their way I'd Warrington. We have not even spoken about the

kicking game, that could be crucial. It is taking a while to get Wigan

out of the dressing room. I am not going to ask you that you think is

going to win, who is this game more important for? Wigan. Warrington.

The teams are coming out for the Challenge Cup quarterfinal.

Warrington at home to Wigan. Two teams with great Challenge Cup

history who are struggling this season. Let us join the commentary

team. Very warm and getting hotter sums up the weather. Lukewarm I

needed to get hotter sums up the current form of two of the biggest

names in rugby league. Something has to give for the positive here today.

Something has already given. Dec Patton on the field. He starts the

game today. He was expecting to be 18th man. Kevin Brown withdrawn

because of injury and Stewart Pearce, you were saying a few weeks

ago he feels more emotional watching Warrington than he has since

watching QPR as the 14-year-old. A minute's silence in pick-up layups

served in memory of the victims of the recent London fire. That was

wonderfully observed. There is a great atmosphere in here, good noise

inside the stadium. This is the way they are aligning up today.

Warrington first. Late change, Dec Patton in for the injured Kevin

Brown. 18-year-old Dagger is making his second appearance. His debut was

last week at Castleford. Ryan Atkins returns after a week off. Wigan

making a headline making six returnees, most notably Tomkins for

the first time since last September. Anthony Kelly had a six-week

absence. My guess is the referee will probably be required! Wounded

Warriors against the wounded were false. This will be a season in hand

thing left for whoever wins today. Silverware are not quite hanging by

a thread for these two but if they go to the Challenge Cup it is going

to be difficult for the losers to pick up anything of any real

consequence this year. That is the importance of this game. It is a

vital game for both teams. The theatre is set out perfectly. The

playing surface is superb. Not a cloud in the sky, not a breath of

wind, we should see a feast of rugby we've. The bench is going to have a

huge impact on the game. The Wigan players coming back, it is a great

opportunity for them to make a big statement, especially Tomkins. His

presence on the field noted by the Warrington fans with his first

touch, the boos ringing out. He grew up as a Warrington fan and used have

a Jonathan Davies shirt. It is great to see him out there. He is a

high-quality rugby league player and we need them out there on the big

stage. Warrington offside. The penalty for Wigan. He knew he was

offside. Years offside. O'Loughlin picks him out. Easy penalty. Give

the referee no option. Got involved in play. Smart by O'Loughlin. That

is the type of play you do not need in conditions like this, energy

sapping conditions. Joel Tomkins and Sam Tomkins off back on the field,

we have to differentiate. That was Joel Tomkins. They have missed the

man. Just the World Cup challenge game when Wigan left the background.

Ratchford is across and has it covered. But did well. Just puts the

ball on the toes. A penalty from Joel Tomkins I believe. Interference

in the ruck. Slowing the play of the ball down. Dangerous tackle. Yes.

The legs got lifted. Warrington need to settle. Complete the set and put

in a good kick. Gidley goes left. Cooper does not do a lot of fancy

work but he does a lot of the hard work. Off of the chest of Benjamin

Jullien, advantageous played. Tomkins went after that and he fell

over. Tomkins is claiming that Ratchford clipped him. The touch

judge 's own from the far side. I was going to say that was the

advantage played. With Warrington you just need to complete the set.

That is a poor pass over running the play. Clever play by Tomkins. Was it

intentional? Not sure if it is intentional but he does obstruct

them. He is on the way to thing the ball and he obstruct them so it is a

penalty and it could be easing them. Ratchford is being called forward.

He is the player with the player microphone today. Penalty, and of

story. He is lucky not to have a yellow card because it was cover

play by Tomkins and there was nobody in position, he could have scored.

That was the guy that obstructed Sam Tomkins. There is no one there when

he goes through. In the meantime the game continues. Warrington having to

defend less than ten from there or not mine. Wigan in prime position.

Farrell celebrated his 200 Wigan appearance at Hull last week.

Gildart is very close but is going to be held up and is looking on in

the process. Warrington get a huge boost. Great defence, Gidley making

the tackle. They got the numbers right. They got off of the line and

put pressure on the ball carrier to force the error. Great defence from

the Warrington Wolves. Did exceptionally wall. No excuse for

mistakes, perfect conditions. There are 11 players in the Wigan 17 who

have come from the one system. One of five current Wigan players in the

squad whose dad played for Wigan. That is the tight gene pool. The

coach has been involved in developing these kids down the years

as well. Warrington have a very decent accounting system themselves

as well. Looking to bring this forum through Ashton Sims. Some decent

line speed from Wigan. Decent ball from Ashley Sims. Of course Daryl

Clark. Eight times Challenge Cup winners, Warrington. 2009, 2010,

2012. Some of the players on show today would've been involved in

those and here they are with Gidley putting in a very neat and tidy

kick. That is what they want to do, settle down. Not put themselves

under pressure. Cut the errors out, Warrington, attacking play will

come. When you think they started that said ten metres from their

calling, they covered virtually the whole length of the pitch, they will

be delighted to hand the ball over and to challenge Wigan to go there

full-length again. We are talking about it being perfectly and

conditions. Take it from someone who has played during the summer, it is

so hot it is far from perfect. The team that does the least amount of

defence and tackling will benefit. If you can have the shot at some

point, look at the Warrington bench, they have taken their players from

the bench and sat them out of the sun. They understand the importance

of keeping their players out of the sun and energy levels today. A

little bit of a concern. A green card, a medical card, he is off for

a ten minute head text. 15. To check that he is OK. He must return to the

field if years. They will be hoping that Leuluai returns. Williams again

gets the kick away. Ratchford has touched it safely and. He was the

lead darter this season because of injury. Pretty much in scones than

the side now. Plenty of energy from both teams, I am impressed by both

sides's offensive line speed, attempting to restrict the go

forward of the opposition. Ashley Sims takes it in. It is slowed down

by O'Loughlin. Gidley again from the halfway line. It is a very good kick

again. It is a very good kick but I think get Tomkins to run the ball

back. There is Leuluai getting his head in the wrong position. The head

hits the hip bone, you have to get off and get that checked. I thought

you were going to burst into song there, the head hits the hip bone.

This defensive set is for asset restart which makes it theoretically

easier to defend against. He has had some highs and lows in his career,

Kevin Brown, in the Challenge Cup. Matt Clemens and on the touchline.

2009 when he limped off, the Huddersfield defeat against

Warrington. He will be hoping his side can bring homeless

quarterfinal. It is Wigan who are causing trouble at the moment. A

very good carry. His nickname is the wrecking ball and he was there. He

has not always been the wrecking ball this season. Bateman ask the

questions. Last play in the set, taken wide. The kick will go out of

play and give Warrington their own line. Warrington looking to buy that

little bit of time. Tremendous run. An aggressive run. All to the

ground. One advantage they have is gelling, any cross kicks, and

Burgess, the height advantage of those two, I do not think they will

be very impressed with the last kick on the tackle, that was a simple

click. Is there an issue on the right-hand side of Wigan's defence

is Bateman and Gelling are out there in terms of later in the game in

terms of match fitness? You trust your sports scientists and make sure

that once they enter the field of play they can play the required

minutes. I am sure the Wigan coaches will have done that. Atkins has

nearly taken it to the halfway line. Tomkins looks into the sunshine but

comes down with the ball. Good kick. Put the ball to the air. As Tomkins

received the ball he received the tackle so that is one tackle

straightaway. You do not want to be kicking and without giving him a

little bit of time and space. Tomkins with the carry and the

flawed. Williams was there. Sharply anticipating. Another eight or nine

yards gathered in the process. Clever play. Quick hands. He has got

Burgess. Gildart looks to time the pass and does so to perfection.

Burgess 's overtures go and Wigan have first blood. What a try.

Brilliant play. They noticed the numbers were shot on the Warrington

right and loverly created the overlap. Lovely pass by O'Loughlin.

He does the dummy run and creates the space on the outside and it is a

simple finish, two on one. That is just a vision. Tremendous play from

the Warriors. That is this dart from Tomkins. It has very strict a try at

the other end. Clever how these stripped the numbers and it was the

perfect pass from Tomkins to Gildart and he just weighed up and bought

enough time for his wing man and released him. Great try. Total

vision. Lovely pass by that man. O'Loughlin just from when they

played the ball you could see the advantage, he read it very quickly.

Tomkins the long pass the extra man and finally the long dummy run. This

is Wigan's problem, turning four into six. Problem possibly solved

because Williams has stuck that over. Their conversion convergence,

penalty conversions, have been a very law percentage this year. It is

important Williams has nailed the first one. Admire the play from

O'Loughlin to Tomkins to Burgess. It was executed to perfection timing

wise. A great try to start this quarterfinal. Looking at Williams'

kicking style, he is quite relaxed. I watched him before the game and he

was very relaxed. The restart has been knocked on and that his gifted

Warrington a real boost because all things being equal getting the ball

back and they can lead siege at the Wigan line immediately.

Anthony Gelling was responsible for that, he was shielding his eyes from

the sun, it was the brilliant sunshine that caused the problem,

and gave Warrington Wolves the great opportunity to strike right back.

Warrington have been doing it tough of late. Is this the moment that

character strikes through? I'm not sure if Ashton Sims meant to

do that but it was effective. No miscommunication on that

occasion. Benjamin Jullien has been a dynamo of late in the second row.

Cooper gets the penalty. Too much going on from Powell. Do they run

this? Yeah, I think they've got to run this. I really do. You can see,

Gidley bringing the ball back to tap it. Because whilst he's tapping it,

they've come forward. It will allow them to set the point that they

require. Whatever shape they're going to throw this Wigan defence.

Not quite online with the tap originally so taken again.

There's another penalty. I think Sam Tomkins when high on that occasion.

This is of the energy for Wigan. A silly mistake by Sam. Watch, around

the necks, he Comes in. Unmissable from the referee's point of view.

The muscular route if the crime -- is the prime objective but they will

go more clever than that. Great defence there from Wigan. Really

holding their composure, holding the line.

A knock-on there. One of those customary Warrington mistakes of

this season. And they've missed out on the last chance they had. The

difference between the quick play of the ball and composure. You're under

the posts, yes, you want to play the ball but the priority is, it's a

proper play off the ball. Just keep your composure. They've got two

sets, get the ball if he's on his feet, it's a repeat set and use up

the energy. Williams will take his time.

Differential penalty. Scrum offence, technical offence. Must be so

frustrating for a coach. It was clever from Wigan, they held the

ball in the back row there. Virtually dummied which meant the

referee had no option to give the penalty. A piggy back out from the

danger area. Talking about frustrating, how frustrated is Kevin

Brown feeling at the moment? He's chatting with Tanya. What exactly is

the problem? The bottom of my foot, I have torn something a couple of

weeks ago. I've not been able to train. I've got it wrong. Was it

always likely to be that Ward would have to play? Yeah, he trained in

the week, I went to the doctor yesterday, had a scan and thought we

could get an injection and numb it. But disappointing. But obviously

Declan is a great player so he'll get the job done. The key here but

the conditions, is it to play smart? Yes, that's what we spoke about,

it's very hot today, ball control and kicking well. We started really

well, we just need to not get frustrated and stick to the process.

Thank you for your time and stop. Tanya looks like a young Jackie

Onassis in their sunglasses! Warrington set themselves a

possibility but oh no further. Wigan's defence holds on. They're

defending their own line very well, I think the on line defence is an

area of weakness for Wigan. But my word, they have been really good in

the first part of this offer. We're now approaching 18 minutes, there'll

be some tired bodies. This will allow the game to open up,

especially in the heat of this condition. Some comments from Jamie

Peacock, they are playing tomorrow. He was talking about how Warrington

are having a bad time of it at the moment, but their muscle memory of

playing in a couple might carry them through her. They've been in seven

of the eight Challenge Cup finals at this stage. They are helped by a

Wigan mistake. So many mistakes. I think it's fatigue, but also an

element, the ball can get greasy when it's as warm as this, sweaty

hands on there. But ball control is paramount in these conditions. The

position is virtually 50-50. Warrington just shading in

territory. The statistic that really matters is a 6-0 to Wigan. He's all

right, he's had his head checked, so he comes back onto the field,

Leuluai. It doesn't count as an interchange. It's come down a little

bit. He's returned within 15 minutes, so that's an injury

assessment, he's past that and he's back out, no interchange.

Brilliant tackle, he's been brilliant so far this game. Michael

McIlorum has led the defensive line, he's hit everything. I don't think

we've mentioned Liam Marshall so far, he's placed twice against

Warrington this season and scored seven tries. He has been one of the

finds of the season. Spent a lot of the last season at Swinton Lions,,

and really quality player, one of many at Wigan Warriors. It's

amazing, he's a natural finisher. He is the good young fellow, son of

David Marshall, who played for Wigan.

Gelling only just short of the try line.

Out to Burgess and Burgess! Well, has he got to there? He was in the

air, he definitely wasn't in touch. He dived in, so it's definitely not

in touch. Let's hear from the video referee for the first time today.

Confirming the grounding. We've got a try as the live decision. So,

Burgess has decision, and he's in the field of play. He now jumps. And

his feet are off the floor. It's still in his hand. Still in his

hand. As the ball comes down. That's in his hand, corner flag doesn't

count, his fingers are on the ball, that's a try. That's a great finish.

A brilliant finish. He realises he's not going to stay in the field of

play if he tries it. A brilliant finish. That's all on the back of

knock-on. Again, errors, first tackle knocks it on, second give

them a penalty and field position. On the back of that field there is

are a superb couple of floats. Williams to Burgess. We've seen some

great finishes. Here are the off-loads. It goes, and then

Tompkins, Joel Tomkins had the presence of mind to off-load to

Williams, and then a real acrobatic finish. Absolutely sensational

finish that is. But just as much there in the couple of off-loads,

pot up, all under control before the ball goes out. And there's the

circus act. Sometimes, that's all you can say. They are even kicking

goals today. Two out of two, and 12-0, we can now lead. Warrington

needing to dig deep. They need in response but this is real

high-quality rugby league from the Wigan Warriors. It's not shape and

structure, it's another form of attack, the off-loads to bring the

defensive line up. Not much difference in the stats. They've had

two opportunities and they've been clinical and scored both

opportunities. That's the difference. Warrington haven't

really created anything off the ball. The possession they have had,

it's swung Wigan's way, territory as well. Burgess had injury issues,

he's played 14 games this season, missed a few more than he would have

liked. That's all, that was his 14th try, I think. It's all about strike

rate. You've got to sort the defence out

on this side, Warrington. Again, the overlap was on. There is an error of

confidence about Wigan..., there is the commentator's curse! I think

this could be the game where Wigan can make a statement. With all of

their big names back, they've had a poor season so far. Last year,

complaining about how good Wigan's defence was, they could get that

back. Joe Tompkins that's Dan Cole drop prior to the defensive line,

he'd been involved in the build-up with a great off-load in the

collision. So a real contrast. Salford and Leeds already in the hat

for the semifinal, or, the big plastic bowl, as we should also

think he -- as we should more succinctly call it these days!

Another mistake. It cannot build momentum with so many errors. It's a

pretty basic one, he's just lost it in the tackle. No hands in from the

Wigan Warriors. Plain and simple, dropping in the tackle. I walked

across the pitch as well, the pitch is in brilliant condition. A lovely

sunny day. I'd have loved to have played in these conditions. Give me

these conditions rather than January or February, any day of the year.

You are only saying that because you want them to say, what about that

muddy day in Halifax where it used idiot in two tries? -- where you got

two tries? Liam Marshall is chasing after this,

but not good enough hands on that occasion from Liam Marshall. He

punches the ground in frustrating, he was anticipating try number eight

in game number three against Warrington. It was a high-quality

decision by Thomas Leuluai. Just to get the ball through. The Warrington

defence was up and in and he just slipped it behind. That is a guilt

-- that is a golden try that Marshall coughed up. Brilliant from

Leuluai, he brought it through the defence. I sense as well, Tompkins,

he's just feeling his way into the game. He hasn't really gone for it

big style, just feeling his way in. He's not going for the brakes, he's

off-loading when he can. Slowly breaking into the game. A chance

here for Warrington. To build some pressure. Get themselves back into

this game, only 12 points behind. But they need something

psychologically here to dig themselves out and back into the

contest. That was a pretty good tackle from Williams. He bent his

back, hit with the shoulder, put it to the floor.

A bit of a loose and wild pass but it is taken.

A kick to ask a question or two, and what a take by Ryan Atkins! There is

some athleticism out on that deal today, is under there? And Ryan

Atkins has just shown that Warrington has as much as Wigan.

That's a perfect kick, because that's where Gelling dropped the

ball with the sun in his eyes. You can't really commit and go into the

air to take it. That's where the advantage is. He can't jump, he

doesn't know where it is, he just goes late and he just jumped in

front of him. It's absolute spot-on brilliant kick. There are aiming for

Thomas Leuluai, it's between him and Anthony Gelling, and Ryan Atkins

just comes up on the blindside of both, ties his run and jump, almost

like a high jumper in the Olympics. That's a great, great to try.

If Declan Patton can squeeze this to a 6-point margin with a successful

kicks, Warrington will be feeling better about themselves. A local

youngster, played with community clubs here and hereabouts, he put it

over and it's six points to 12. Strategically is hugely important

try for Warrington Wolves, they will have great confidence, crashing

their better attacking line and that the kick in, they haven't done that

over the past three sets. 12 minutes of the half remaining.

And just what Warrington needed. We could look back on this first

half-hour and say it's a tale of two kicks. Leuluai's kicking would have

been pounced on by Marshall and scored, they would have been 16, 18

points up, and then Atkins comes up with a six point of the other end.

He's lost it. Well, Willie Isa... He didn't want to get hold of that. I

think he wanted a breather. That was tremendous, the skill in the kick

and the athleticism in the jump. Superb rugby league.

Williams feeds Wigan, they come out with it. Joe Burgess already sensing

the prospect of hat-trick, his second try earlier had the real wow

factor. Bateman keeps running in and running

hard. Step for George Williams that we

hopefully see in England's team in the World Cup in December and

November. Only one plate to go, Warrington

looking to hang on. All options run out eventually. The

Warrington defence are coming up very aggressively on the edges. Sam

Williams is inside and there preventing him getting the kick

away. A good edge of defence from Warrington, but Wigan are switching

the ball back inside and testing the honesty of the middle channel of the

Warrington Wolves. And boy, are they missing some players today,

Warrington. Kevin Brown a late withdrawal, and Chris Hill out

because of suspension, and Dale Hill, he has not been seen all year

because of injury. Penalty Wigan. That's what you need to do, get a

view quick boys into the half with darting runs. You're right, that's

where they are on the money in conditions like this, they have to

get in there and help the big players, get in there and test the

agility of the opposition. Sam Wilde made his debut against

Wigan a couple of years ago. The two years anniversary of that debut

here. Atkins has got a second! Anything

Burgess can do, Atkins can do just as well. But... The referee thinks

it a try. But he wants to know if Atkins came from an onside position.

So back with the TV referee. The live decision is try. If we can

pause it on the set. He looks to be behind there. It looks K. Play on,

that is play on. Just check the grounding now, please. Just to check

that the ball is grounded OK. It's ticked up clean, Atkins has the

ball, it's down, before he goes dead, it's a try, confirmed the try.

Wait for this raw. CHEERING

what a magnificent response by Warrington. Now it is a tale of

three kicks. Superb from the Wolves. It is the two half-backs on the

short side, and that attracted some doubt in the Wigan defence. And it

came up aggressively, a little toe poke through and Ryan Atkins once

again he has done one in the air, this time he gets behind the

defence, picking the ball up in midair and plucking it over the

white. It's clever, because Tomkins was caught in the tackle area. He

was right behind the play of the ball and he was out of position. So

he left himself a little bit too much to get there. It's a clever

kick and this kid noticed it. Declan Patton didn't think he's been

playing today but he's put over a conversion to make it 12 points

apiece. Tomkins gave themselves a little bit too much. Beautiful

kicks, good try. Well, we've got a cup tie now. We have. I hope there

isn't another significant kicks because then it would be a tale of

former critics. Well, the -- a tale of four kicks. Well, the defence is

so good, it's an option that's working well. Tackle count in the

90s, temperature in the 90s, but, but a mistake there from George King

has put Wigan in prime position. So, so frustrating, that is. So

frustrating. You've just read gained parity on the scoreboard and it's

sloppy in the condition. And he's done so well so far. So well, yes.

But that's a basic error. Now Wigan 20 metres within the Warrington

Wolves line. This is a higher standard of

performance from both sides than either have produced of late?

Definitely, this is a dapper cup tie. You can tell there's a lot at

stake and both sets of players are executing and playing very, very

well. Bateman doesn't look like the

biggest kid on the block but he hits above his weight. Williams has lost

its and the hunger to get there is all Warrington's. They have it back

again. Great enthusiasm from the Wolves, but it was behind his

shoulder. But look at the enthusiasm of the Wolves players to claim that

ball. He was trying to make the referee's

decision for him there, wasn't he? He decided that barrel wasn't square

and went at him. But nothing giving from the man with the whistle, and

the end of the kick which is Miss measured. Very disappointing,

instead of having a scrum, they have now got zero tackles to go. It

really does give them some yardage to deliver. The tackle count starts

with this as the first. Gelling looked forward but Marshall

is allowed to carry on. And Atkins can't keep hold of him and somehow,

Liam Marshall does get try number eight in only his third game against

Warrington. This season. There has to be a question over the past in

the first place. A bad pass and tackle. Look at this again but

Warrington will be very disappointed with their defensive effort here.

Just watch, lovely play again, Tomkins again, that's a forward pass

it looks like. Well marked, two people, Atkins is all over him. But

he allows him free, should never, ever score. That's forward by a

mile. I think the crowd and Denise this screen agree with you. It's

hard to argue against it. But if the whistle doesn't go, you played it,

that's what were Liam Marshall did. And the defenders brushed off with

almost contemptuous ease. To reiterate, in rugby league, you

cannot look at a forward pass on video evidence. You cannot refer to

the video referee for a forward pass. No, it's got to be an on field

call. There are three officials, they should catch it, they should

see it. We saw it as it was happening.

Another touchline effort. That's a really good hick from George

Williams. He's nailing it today, three out of three, 18-12, Wigan

lead. Yes, this is the try. Leuluai creates the overlap. It's that last

pass that there are questions about. But some good footwork there,

brushes Atkins off, ratchet is looking to get involved, but it is

too late. Ash macro Ratchford is looking to get involved but it is

too late. You imagine what it means to him. I think that's the most

demonstrative celebration of his entire career. He's usually such a

cool try scorer. Now, Wigan have dropped the ball. It will go out of

play. Warrington will get it back here. There is time, two minutes,

Warrington quick to the pack. They'll stop the clock. George King

involved in that. The error from the kick-off previously. Sutton is

bringing the ball back, a good solid shoulder contact from George King

and he forces the ball three. That is a ball carry error, that was

King's great technique which forced that.

More errors made by Wigan so far, forced or under.

Ratchford taking on Gildart but there are three of his mates. A

penalty here. The referee has not stopped the clock. There's still

time for a full set here from Warrington. A great opportunity

because it is at the end of the half and there will be some tired bodies.

Gidley. They have some chance. What a tackle on Lineham. Brilliant

tackle. He has saved four points. He goes with a great deal of urgency

and determination and aggression. He had some ground to cover. He said to

me did, great cover tackle. Saved his team four points. The awareness

to turn and smash into touch. There's so much in this game for

both sides. It has been a really good game of belly bandit is what

the Challenge Cup is all about. Wigan will see this set through you

would have thought until half-time. Basic efficient set of six to run

the clock down. Bateman tacking back. I do not think they demand was

expecting that. It has given Warrington perhaps a sniff of a

chance. They stopped the clock with 12 seconds, 11 seconds to go. Time

for one play for Warrington. I cannot understand what Bateman is

doing with the clock running down. Tries to offload. As soon as these

is formed that referee can stop the clock and the urgency has bought

them an 11 second opportunity. I would take the ball on the line for

the kick through. There is no fool back. Take the ball on the line and

turn your centre. Chase this. You have 11 seconds left. What happens

here? Take it to the line. Ratchford saw the gap. Can he play the ball

before the hooter sounds? Yes. This will be the last play. Atkins was

after it. All Gelling had to do was make sure it went out of play and

that is what he did. A fascinating end to a fascinating half. Great

first half, defences were very good. Good space and awareness by the

Wigan boys. It has been a great half, both teams contributing

greatly and the game is wide open. Nothing short of what we should

expect from a quarterfinal. You did not seem too disrupted by Kevin

going out in the warm up. Deck has been in that position most of the

year himself. Devon really wanted to play, he was always going to be

pressuring -- as yet. We probably need to do a bit more defensively, a

bit smarter. We are looking forward to the second half. William, how

pleased were you with the first half, Donna? Two tries Orthotics is

a bit disappointing. It is so hot. What are the conditions like? Yes,

just making sure you have good game management and you look after the

body. Hopefully we will be on the end of the opportunities. A

fascinating first 40 minutes as all of the commentary team said at the

end of that half. Here are the facts.

A compelling first half. Partly because both teams have made errors.

Both teams have made errors and I am looking at Warrington and a lot of

their errors have come because they are trying to play the ball too

quick. If they give it an extra second or two they can play properly

and could do less defending. Is that easy to do in a game like this? A

second or two does not own very long to me sitting here but in the needs

of the game like this it feels like an eternity. Playing on Friday night

at eight o'clock when it is a bit drier the ball might come out in a

couple of seconds. It is warm out there. Everybody is sweating. Made

makes a little bit of a difference. You have to think I am going to play

the ball slower for the sake of my team. It is not the date to have the

amount of errors both teams are having, inviting each other into

each other's half. We have probably seen something similar from

Warrington, defending better than we highlighted at the top of the shore.

It is going to be something like a missed tackle like we saw at the

end. You just stonewalled me there. I

knew you never listen to me! Now he is an MBE he can do what he wants!

As far as Wigan's tries are concerned... The first Burgess try

was a smart these of play from Wigan. Within creating the illusion

they are going to carry the ball tight. O'Loughlin spots the

Warrington line is tight and gets a wide pass that wipes out four

Warrington defenders. He is expecting the kick. Gildart takes

the space and time says pass perfectly and Burgess finishes. A

smart piece of execution from O'Loughlin. Tomkins, Gildart and

Burgess had work to do and did it fantastically well. Great try off

the back of some great goal-line defence. This is the second try,

superb from Sutton. Tomkins finds the play. The money ball from

Williams. He just misses out. Traps two defenders. The players did I'm

going to Warrington. Great off-load. A special piece of skill, as the

weird is coming to solve the problem, he gives proper God Burgess

the opportunity to score. Not just popping it up and hoping, there is a

great deal of control. It is a great discipline. Even the first try, it

was a Tomkins off-load. To try to recover in the Warrington defence

ended up tight and it is ironic how we talked about Warrington doing the

off-loads, it is Wigan who have done it in the first half. Looking at the

Wigan dressing room. Look at Wigan's defence. We spoke about how they

have defended on their line. They did not defend very well against Lee

and that in isolation might suggest they might do the same here. Wigan

were willing to slow it down so much they could concede penalties. They

thought nothing quick, we would rather concede penalties and that

restricted Warrington's chances to create base and score points. We

didn't thought we are going to slow this down and finally it ended with

a huge tackle from Marshall. That was a sign that Wigan's goal-line

defence was on. Warrington came up with a way to unlock that defence.

They were prepared to test the waters with the referee. They are

going to push into the utmost limit to prevent Warrington getting a

quick play. It is a sign of belief when you are willing to give a

penalty away to defend another set of six. It shows the confidence.

They have identified they cannot allow Warrington to play the ball

quick. The way the unlock the defence was through kick. When

Castleford beat St Helens you tried to kick Iraq is to land on

scrum-half or centre. Gidley is getting the ball for Atkins. This

kick is pinpoint perfect. Atkins executes an unbelievable catch. A

world-class kick and catch to score a try. Credit to Wigan as much as

anything. Tomkins got in the tackle. He got a marker. This is the

difference between some getting their tackling and getting the ball.

Superb kick. Sam Tomkins is tied up and because the Wigan defenders come

off of their line so quickly they are relying upon the full-back

cleaning up those small kicks. In the old days you may be tried to

land it right on the winger whereas now it is landing on the smaller

guys and if not there in the guy behind him. Leuluai. Usually a

little man. Then people like myself who never want to catch a ball as

they can help it. It makes a massive difference. That is what teams are

doing, pinpointing these points outside the sticks that are

difficult to defend. We are going to kick the ball, St Helens, the next

time we play Leeds, towards someone specifically. There probably was a

former pass in this. Probably. Whether it is forward or not a young

player on the Wigan side showing amazing strength and resilience. He

said I am not giving up on this. Regardless of whether it was forward

this shows confidence, strength and execution from a young athlete and

what a great finish. That is desire in a nutshell. Tomkins, Williams and

Leuluai played their part. It meant Marshall had a chance because they

managed to go at the Warrington line and commit defenders. After that

Wigan gave away three errors. Eg Ball towards Warrington. It felt as

if if Wigan could keep hold of the ball they were in the ascendancy but

it did not happen. The last five minutes of the first half was crazy.

The try saving tackle came after that try so he kept his

concentration. That is what it always comes down to. Fatigue makes

cowards of us all. It is about concentration. You have to keep

focused on your job and trust each other. It will come together and

positive mental health amongst players, fans and officials within

the sport back of rugby league. Rugby league is the first sport in

people seek help the potential as we can save a lot of lives. Danny

Scunthorpe became involved in the charity after sinking into

depression when injury ended his career. He says being able to talk

about his problems saved his life. It is not just players who are

vulnerable. Former referee Ian Smith battled with mental health issues

when he left the game. I felt I lost my identity. I had refereed for 12

years. Because of the external pleasures referees Aboud under,

people do not realise you are a human being who make mistakes. It is

a very lonely and isolating place. The former professionals are taking

their message beyond the game presenting their stories to an Alpha

male environment like Pleasance, the urgency services and building sites,

to encourage men to talk about depression. If of rugby league

player can talk about how we're feeling anyone can. We only get

positive feedback. We did a construction site 12 months ago in

London and the day after seven men went to eat Charan said they were

struggling and needed to get help. Construction sites you are five

times more likely to die from suicide than an accident on site.

Some of the tweets we get an amazing. People have said we are

making a massive difference and they had contemplated taking their lives

until they got on this programme and it is incredibly rewarding. It is

like therapy. The initiative could be broadened into other sports. This

is a world first. The rugby league community and the RFL and particular

deserve every credit, the Department of Health, their recent policy,

revised policy on suicide prevention, and the Parliamentary

select committee both commended rugby league and state of mind as

the benchmark for other sports as well. It is not only important

within the game but also getting the message out to building sites and

the like. Absolutely. The ability to talk about your problems is not easy

for a lot of people, particularly professional sports men and rugby

players who are held up as icons to be pillars of society but we all

have problems that you have to find a mechanism and this is a brilliant

innovation that has been around for a while in rugby league and to it

out to the community is necessary and a must. Turning back to the

game, Warrington against Wigan. Radford has been wearing the player

microphone for us. This is the first 40 minutes through him. Come on!

Another good caddie from Brad Dwyer who has lost that. Farrell picks it

up. It is really an issue the number of times the ball has been lost in

the collision area, it is an issue for both teams. Bateman has lost

that. He has lost that. It was one-on-one. I think that was

one-on-one. Tomkins at the word with him. Why did he kick it out? They

are furious. It is almost as if Bateman says to the referee, he is

only young, can you not let him off? I think Tomkins gave a bit of a

coaching lesson after that, shall we say? Marshall 21 and learning every

game. What an impact he has had this season. What an impact he has had

this game with the try and the try saving tackle in the first half. He

is already up to 20 tries in his burgeoning career. Marshall. Eight

of those against Warrington. Tough work going on.

Good work by Atkins. Jullien really does have a lot in terms of energy.

Dwyer with the kick. He did not have to do that. He had the ball and

Warrington would have had it for six more tackles. It is the composure

and aspect. It is Challenge Cup rugby league. If he guaranteed good

tactic in the tackle and had eagle going himself and it would have been

another set of six on the Wigan line. Instead Wigan bring its three.

Gildart. The kick out of derby have early. It is going to be a 40-20.

There was nothing Lineham could do about that. We have seen some great

skills with the attacking kicks but that is a great one from distance

within his own 40 metre line from dummy half. He just launched the

ball. Magnificent kick. Our justice at it. Sutton is going to be held

up. Tomkins I should say. He got a penalty. He will go for two here I

think. Yes, two scores. This is a gimme, a tap in for Williams. That

would take them eight points to the difference in the scores which is

two scores. For the opposition. Great kick from Powell. Measured it

to perfection. The only way you're going to stop that is if you are

standing on the touchline. He holds him down. King is in there. Two

points. He had to do that because the defence, they would have had to

play the ball. Williams has kicked the mag out of the max so far. Make

psychologically but Warrington will feel there's plenty of time they

will get opportunities. Both coaches will be happy with the

defensive effort, a marked improvement on previous weeks.

Knowing the game is not done yet by a long-distance, watching on. 12

points in the first half. Having to catch up. Eight points in the

second. Good carry. How efficient has that been? Very

low risk, very simple, but my word, executed really well with a certain

element in the carries. He had away through their but his fielding has

been hurt. Philbin is out of the game at the

but Warrington couldn't get back. Tremendously well, better footwork.

That is outstanding. I think a lot: copped him. -- I think Sean

O'Loughlin copped him. Keep them lower, back in, please.

What an opportunity for Warrington here. Wigan back on the back foot

again. Declan Patton safely in touch but here we go. Warrington's tap, 30

metres out, six tackles to test this Wigan line again.

Just in case, Clarke dives on it, the referee is not bad for the good

Again, opportunity knocks for the Warrington Wolves.

Ratchford almost picks the ball up and knocked on. That was Burgess

trying to pick that up, he has knocked it on. So what an escape for

Warrington and they can keep the pressure on. They really can. Trying

to find one of his outside runners. A scruffy pass that went to the

ground. Burgess just knocking the ball on because the blood no one has

-- no one would catch him. 25 minutes to go, still a lot of twists

and turns to come. Savelio is over at! What a big

moment in the game again, Warrington, Andre Savelio to scorer

and Warrington back on track. That was a high-quality score, it really

was. When they played, watch what young Declan Patton does. He starts

off on the short side and at the very last minute, he goes over.

First of all, it's the knock-on from Burgess that gave the field position

to Warrington to continue with the pressure. But look at Declan Patton

in the background, really executed pass for the back Gidley. Took it to

the row and over it goes. Brilliant play, very well executed. Brilliant

play by the half-backs. So Declan just goes for another two

points which chipped away again, they have never quite been in the

lead but they've never been too far behind for too long, Warrington. And

now they trailed by a mere two points. It's an absolutely cracking

game. Really is. The excitement levels are through the roof. The

crowd are really enjoying it as well. The conditions which

inevitably will force fatigue to be fact that in the last quarter of the

game, but going for a great finish. Nobody is letting their

concentration slip, whether they are wearing cherry and white or primrose

and blue. Again, Sun in the eyes. It's like they are quarrying against

the cliff face of those Wigan defenders. Inch by inch by inch.

That's a good carry. Simple carried from dummy half. Took the yards and

allows a front foot kick from Gidley.

He's lost that, the referee says play on. He had to make his mind up

but on we go. The Warrington fans have high

expectations now. Good defence. Did really well, the

left wing of air, to close that play down. But it's still on for

Warrington. Savelio having quite the little cameo here in the last few

minutes. I don't get that, third tackle,

keeping the pressure on, Ratchford, he does some magical things but I

think wrong option there. Yes, that's a decision-making process.

Being aware of where you are, what the position of the game is and what

the tackle count is as well. It's really left Wigan off the hook. Here

is the reason why it Wigan are here now. And our played, very nearly.

Leuluai has overcooked this. Not by much, six inches, that's all. But

it's given Warrington the ball back in a much more advantageous position

than they might have expected it. It's going to put pressure on, on

Tom Lineham with the kick. Just a couple of yards.

Ryan Sutton and Ashton Sims, you wouldn't like to get caught between

the pair of them. In any circumstances, to be honest with

you! Suddenly the glory was there, but it

what aged -- this is what a cup tie should be like, it should be hard to

clearing the ruck, the referee giving the penalty for that.

A tremendous effort there in defence. I just can't understand...

Look at that possession. They've absolutely dominated possession in

the position. At some stage the pie chart will go more even and that's

scrambling across, the gap opened up because they created that overlap

and that missed tackle, they were shuffling out wide. He stepped

inside of three players. It was really important, Sam Tomkins, his

past, heck of a farce. They had to Jan in there, but Lineham managed to

get away and the red Sea opened up. All those moments of frustrate

frustration that John must've had recovering from a shoulder injury

must have disappeared in the blink of an eye there as he scored that

try. And Williams kicks again, 100% success rate, unprecedented this

season. It was always thing to happen when you said that the

given it away, Bateman picks it up. I'm not sure what Ashton Sims is

doing. It is going to put his hands in, just get out of the way. But the

second time he's done that. Look how clear their lines are how quickly.

Tackle two and inside their opponents half. If we can get the

next goal, I think that would be it. I don't know if Warrington have the

energy resources to claw two scores back. Nice set up for a drop goal

here. They're going wide, I don't think they've got the intention for

that at the moment, they've gone very wide.

Back to Tomkins, the referee was screaming!

Lineham has to catch it, nothing else he could do but catch that and

he falls out of play. Oh, hang on. Yes, he has. The weight Leuluai was

complaining, I thought there was going to be a decision against

Wigan. How good was this kick? Such a good kick, he had no choice. Just

watch. No option, really. Add to take it. The youngster did really

well there, pulled out of the challenge and so he couldn't get

penalised for tackling him in the air. His brain worked well there,

great composure, pulled out of the challenge, Lineham at the ball but

falls out of play, great opportunity for Wigan.

Wigan fans in great voice at the moment, their side have got six

point lead but six tackles to make this again another bigger lead one

way or another. McIlorum had a little dart at the

line, and his urgency to get up and play it has lost it, Joel Tomkins

thought that something untoward was done to him, he turned around with a

bit of then, the referee blows his whistle and that calmed things down

again. McIlorum had a go at the line, didn't he? And then trying to

bring the ball back in quickly, just loses it. And there's the dispute,

shall we say? You see a similar sort of thing on most school playgrounds.

Not very often you seem punches thrown. No, their best friends again

now. Scrum down, Warrington ball, back it up. A misunderstanding.

You two are best mates, come on, get on with it! Its Warrington's head

and feet here, but what a distance to come, 19 metres, nine metres --

nine minutes left. It is not beyond the realms of possibility. There's

another score in this game, no doubt. It's just whether it's the

Primrose and blue or the Cherry and Whites.

The fast forward button, a Tony Smith dubbed him a couple of years

ago, Brad Dwyer. That's a really poor kick. You could

see the idea. But the execution not there.

This would seem to have a little more meaning. He made the tackle,

new they didn't need to drag him anywhere. It was a good

counterattack from the kick return. They've tackled him. Scruff of the

coming in, I dragged, I don't need your lads coming in, to have a word

efficiently. Marshall knows his way to the

Eventually. Tomkins is growing for the drop

goal. He has put that over. That was one point that might take it out of

Warrington's reach because Warrington have to scored twice.

Leuluai is there waiting but he took it on himself. Should have closed

them down. Stood off of him. That is the smartness that comes with

experience. So the half Johns, Tomkins, who took over. He can feel

very pleased with his contribution in his first game back after such a

long time out. He adds a little bit of extra. He has created a little

bit of space today for the outside backs. He has been excellent. Not

only an attack. He has been really safe and events as well. -- in

defence. Advanced out of the line. Six minutes left to play. Williams

drilled at. It hit the man on the way through.

Warrington have not lost their fight. Score in this set or the next

time they have possession and it would put the cat amongst the bed

and again. Gidley standing start. Could not create anything from that

situation. Only a couple of pleased to go. Warrington needing a shake of

inspiration. Something to happen. Trying to make that happen.

Ratchford puts it high in the air. Tomkins cannot get there. Burgess

does. He is in the area. If Warrington can keep him there that

will consider that a victory. They do. Warrington need some points in

this set of six. They really do. That drop goal back from Tomkins has

made it a two scored game so they have to score this one to give

themselves any chance of stealing it at the end. They'll take a big deep

breath. Potential attack and potential defence because everybody

knows how important this set is here. If Warrington can find a way

over they set up a tantalising finish. If Wigan can keep them out

Sheer willpower took over the line not that long ago. Dwyer in at dummy
