Hello and welcome to the England dressing room, it has been 44 yours | :00:43. | :00:50.
since England and Great Britain one a major competition, but beginning | :00:51. | :00:53.
the four Nations against New Zealand, hopes are high. Australia | :00:54. | :01:02.
and Scotland also make up the teams but the excitement is around | :01:03. | :01:05.
England, with the new manager Wayne Bennett and because this man is | :01:06. | :01:10.
back. And sewers is international rugby league under BBC. -- so is. | :01:11. | :01:38.
It is the four Nations, on the BBC, new era for England when the captain | :01:39. | :01:52.
Sam Burgos. And all under the watchful eye of the new head coach | :01:53. | :02:00.
Australian Wayne Bennett. That has ruffled some feathers. Plenty to | :02:01. | :02:07.
discuss. New Zealand, England's first opponents. And even although | :02:08. | :02:13.
England defeated them in this series last year, it always seems as though | :02:14. | :02:19.
you still have a hangover for England from the semifinal defeat in | :02:20. | :02:25.
2013. It is a fresh start, and a fresh competition. It is the four | :02:26. | :02:30.
Nations. Everybody cleanly job in the group stages. And then the top | :02:31. | :02:38.
two, at the end of the three weeks meet in the final at Anfield. This | :02:39. | :02:44.
is the trophy that they are going to be playing for. And alongside me, | :02:45. | :02:51.
the former New Zealand international Robbie Hunter, and Kevin Sinfield. | :02:52. | :02:59.
Even although this is a great competition at this stage, does | :03:00. | :03:06.
every game feel like a knockout? I think today is important, with home | :03:07. | :03:10.
advantage at Huddersfield we just want them to come out and perform. I | :03:11. | :03:14.
know that they are really looking forward to coming here and playing | :03:15. | :03:19.
well. Is that because when England looked at the next two fixtures, | :03:20. | :03:24.
expected to beat Scotland and in Australia. I know you are expected | :03:25. | :03:29.
to win every game but you do not want to be going into that meeting, | :03:30. | :03:39.
-- needing a win? I do not think you do. It is not ideal. But Kiwis also | :03:40. | :03:49.
want to win. With Sam back as the Captain Edward be good to go out at | :03:50. | :03:54.
this packed stadium and get the win. Would you have concerns about New | :03:55. | :03:56.
Zealand, after losing to England possibly today that they would not | :03:57. | :04:04.
want to go to Australia, or do you think the psychology is different? I | :04:05. | :04:09.
think we understand when they are students come to these four Nations | :04:10. | :04:13.
competitions, they have been odds on favourites. Even although New | :04:14. | :04:20.
Zealand are number one, Australia just seem to have this thing about | :04:21. | :04:25.
them. The game against New Zealand two weeks ago, they looked so good. | :04:26. | :04:29.
New Zealand have spent the last few weeks working on these things, but | :04:30. | :04:37.
yet to put together 30 minutes, as opposed to 80 minutes. You said New | :04:38. | :04:40.
Zealand are number one. That could go. Australia could replace them. | :04:41. | :04:50.
Would that be a bigger blow? What matters more? Winning every game. | :04:51. | :04:56.
The world ranking, that is just statistics. But this ties ino | :04:57. | :05:07.
emotion, it is preparation for the scheme and getting off to the | :05:08. | :05:12.
correct start. The first deem was last night. We are going to show you | :05:13. | :05:16.
some highlights of that. And later we will speak to Sam Burgess and | :05:17. | :05:23.
Wayne Bennett. This is the England team that is going to be starting. | :05:24. | :05:33.
That is a massive forward pack. Editors. It is huge. We are known | :05:34. | :05:44.
for the performances of the pack, and his last performance as an | :05:45. | :05:50.
England international in 2013, arguably the best in the world. It | :05:51. | :05:55.
is good to have him back. And when you looked at some of the new faces, | :05:56. | :06:00.
obviously Sam Burgess coming back, but Jonny Lomax a cap against the | :06:01. | :06:10.
French, got and Luke Gale. Some excitement. Exactly. I am delighted | :06:11. | :06:18.
to see Jonny Lomax. He has got the nod. Some magnificent with Saints. | :06:19. | :06:28.
Form and Luke Gale has been outstanding with Castleford. Just | :06:29. | :06:33.
got better and better. I look forward to seeing them today. We | :06:34. | :06:40.
will look ahead to the New Zealand team shortly. Sam Burgess, doing | :06:41. | :06:49.
some stretches, what is the technical term for that? Just band! | :06:50. | :06:59.
And while he is doing that we can speak to Wayne Bennett. You have | :07:00. | :07:01.
just had a couple of weeks with the players, what has been the focus? | :07:02. | :07:10.
Just to get them training well. And the game, the competition. Just do | :07:11. | :07:17.
have some belief. What has Luke Gale done, to have pushed himself ahead | :07:18. | :07:20.
of Williams? It is a specialist position. And Jonny Lomax, at full | :07:21. | :07:30.
back? What was the thinking? I just thought that he did a couple of | :07:31. | :07:35.
things that I like. What is going to be key? Executing well. And with a | :07:36. | :07:45.
view to getting to the final, how much pressure on you to win this | :07:46. | :07:50.
game, get off to the winning start? I do not feel the pressure, the | :07:51. | :07:54.
pressure is just for us to play well. Were obviously excited to see | :07:55. | :08:00.
Sam Burgess back, you have made him the captain, what leadership can he | :08:01. | :08:05.
bring? Certainly from the front, going to be a good captain. Huge | :08:06. | :08:13.
pack for us. They have a big one. How important? Whoever wins that | :08:14. | :08:20.
wins the game. You have had that personal attack, some of us waded | :08:21. | :08:27.
in. I have seen nothing, heard nothing. Some added space facing | :08:28. | :08:33.
Australia. Do you think they are worried about it taking charge of | :08:34. | :08:38.
England? I have no idea. Good luck today. We will talk more about the | :08:39. | :08:52.
Australian comments later, but my sense is Tanya may need to go to | :08:53. | :08:54.
every interview with about 30 questions. That was almost awkward. | :08:55. | :09:02.
Just such a cool character. He has been at the forefront of years. The | :09:03. | :09:08.
media does not manage him, he manages the media. I was at a dinner | :09:09. | :09:18.
this week, he's so cool. As a Kiwi, he always made me frightened. We | :09:19. | :09:24.
will get a longer interview with Dave Woods later, about the ethos, | :09:25. | :09:30.
he gets nothing in these interviews and they assume that players like | :09:31. | :09:39.
that? I found that amusing. Do you want to till, -- tell Tanya? She | :09:40. | :09:50.
interviewed him on Tuesday as actually got the best out of them. | :09:51. | :09:54.
He just wants to manage the team, and that comes across to the | :09:55. | :09:57.
players. I have seen how hard that they have worked, and that is down | :09:58. | :10:06.
to his magic. The eschewing coach has had a pop at him. After the game | :10:07. | :10:13.
last night. If you that in greater detail. Is that part and parcel of | :10:14. | :10:25.
Rugby League? It should be. It states column inches, gets us | :10:26. | :10:33.
talking, I love that. Two Aussies having a go, stoke the fire! Take a | :10:34. | :10:41.
look at this New Zealand team. How can the end the jinx? V have not won | :10:42. | :10:50.
a competition in the UK since 2005. I looked at the opening 79 New | :10:51. | :10:55.
Zealand have chosen, all of them have been outstanding over the | :10:56. | :11:05.
years. The new additions have been striking, and probably, the one to | :11:06. | :11:13.
watch Jason Taumalolo. Bashes people! He has got everything in his | :11:14. | :11:22.
repertoire. The worrying thing from my point of view, from England | :11:23. | :11:29.
viewpoint, the half backs, so much experience. Spine, so experienced. | :11:30. | :11:38.
And they know each other Warriors. From plenty more build-up to come. | :11:39. | :11:46.
That is a lovely fruit platter! And we will continue the build-up to | :11:47. | :11:50.
England New Zealand. And we have got an interview with with Wayne | :11:51. | :11:57.
Bennett, and Sam Burgess, getting the thoughts of the New Zealand | :11:58. | :12:03.
camp. But we can show you what happened at the four Nations last | :12:04. | :12:08.
night. The first meeting between Australia and Scotland. That took | :12:09. | :12:21.
place at Hull. Flames go up. Smith and Brough lead out the sides. The | :12:22. | :12:32.
no nation outside the big three has won in 12 attempts since expansion. | :12:33. | :12:39.
It is an auto loan evening, at Hull. Can Scotland digging deeper, to make | :12:40. | :12:44.
it what 13. They have said it is the strongest squad that Scotland have | :12:45. | :12:52.
ever assembled. But it remains a team of superstars. Australia have | :12:53. | :12:59.
made changes. Strong side. Five debutants. Packed full of | :13:00. | :13:13.
experience. Scotland have some new faces. Not least Lewis Tierney, | :13:14. | :13:32.
Grand Final winner with Wigan. And Steve MacCormack, 13th year. And we | :13:33. | :13:47.
are ready to go. Smith will swing the left boot. Big hit as well! | :13:48. | :14:06.
Scotland need a quick start. Just need a good kick, good chase, but | :14:07. | :14:12.
Australia have signalled the intent already with some strong contact. It | :14:13. | :14:25.
is a decent start defensively. Brough, kicking, will that be a | :14:26. | :14:31.
tactic tonight? The four Nations, under way. I think speaking before | :14:32. | :14:41.
the game, about the threat of Brough, you expect to see the back | :14:42. | :14:46.
rowers for Australia target bin defensively. | :14:47. | :14:57.
That will help Scotland. But kept in play. It is going to call high, | :14:58. | :15:18.
aerial once again. Konck on. First wobble from Scotland. It was a great | :15:19. | :15:26.
kick. It is difficult when it was between the winner under a | :15:27. | :15:28.
full-back, who is going to be challenging. You do not expect that, | :15:29. | :15:38.
from Brough, the captain of the side. First opportunity for | :15:39. | :15:41.
Australia. McCormack says we're not here to lie | :15:42. | :15:56.
down, get autographs, swap jerseys. Slicing through the gap! It has | :15:57. | :16:02.
taken for under minutes, Australia have the lead. Creates the overlap. | :16:03. | :16:16.
It as a. For Australia tonight. -- is a super start. This is much | :16:17. | :16:22.
better for Scotland, and this is going to be the key when they do | :16:23. | :16:26.
concede, what the response is going to be like. After nine minutes, | :16:27. | :16:33.
Australia four to the good. But standing far. Gets the off-load | :16:34. | :16:45.
away? No. And look at that. That is absolutely brilliant. Cameron Smith | :16:46. | :17:01.
to Cronk, 8-0! Absolutely superb. That was Melbourne Storm all over. | :17:02. | :17:07.
You think that MacCormack would have asked from his players, nothing | :17:08. | :17:15.
easy. Not given away anything too easily. At the end of the day, gone | :17:16. | :17:22.
set for set. Australia capitalised on the few position. And another | :17:23. | :17:32.
good set. Last play, magic to unlock them. But with too many moves. This, | :17:33. | :17:46.
going to run in another score. Brilliant ball movement. Going under | :17:47. | :17:48.
the sticks, and the kangaroos bouncing. It was a perfect pass, and | :17:49. | :18:00.
a brilliant score. It has been kick off, try, the last few minutes. An | :18:01. | :18:07.
Australia seem to be in the mood to keep that going. 14 minutes. 16 | :18:08. | :18:14.
points. And another. Loads of room. It is going to be Cronk again. | :18:15. | :18:22.
Australia tearing Scotland apart. It was Tyson on that occasion. We spoke | :18:23. | :18:34.
about his size. It is just not a contest, physically. And Cronk, | :18:35. | :18:41.
support and wonderful pass. It has been a poor half for Scotland. Not | :18:42. | :18:47.
many positives that I can take from the Scottish state. -- side. Afters | :18:48. | :18:59.
there? This is better. That is more related from Scotland. First | :19:00. | :19:11.
penalty. Shift to the edge. Short side. Absolutely. Do not go through | :19:12. | :19:21.
the teeth. This is the only match in the four Nations this evening, | :19:22. | :19:26.
England New Zealand in the second fixture. Scotland, this is the first | :19:27. | :19:40.
look at the Australian posts... Can they make it count? Lost it? He has. | :19:41. | :19:51.
He was looking pleadingly. But that chance goes to nothing. It was a | :19:52. | :19:57.
better small period for Scotland. Australia, just millimetres away. | :19:58. | :20:02.
More desperate defending for Scotland. Back they come. This time, | :20:03. | :20:13.
well read. But going to have to defend another six. And that is a | :20:14. | :20:18.
lesson for Scotland what to do. It was about composure and this is | :20:19. | :20:21.
going to be difficult for Scotland to defend. That was good bravery. He | :20:22. | :20:27.
was going straight for that post. Drills it low. Brilliant take from | :20:28. | :20:44.
Aitken. Aussie fielder on the boundary! 15 away. Woods, great | :20:45. | :20:58.
stint. He has been strong. It is going to be yet another try. Walk in | :20:59. | :21:10.
for Mansour. And the applause, just appreciation for Australia. We talk | :21:11. | :21:17.
about the repeat set that Scotland had to do. That was brilliant skill | :21:18. | :21:25.
from O'Neill. And as soon as you saw him appear, absolutely spot on, | :21:26. | :21:30.
Mansour. What they would give to get themselves on the scoreboard before | :21:31. | :21:37.
half-time. Absolutely. Almost misses the kick out! Just changes the main | :21:38. | :21:48.
set. 26-4, 26-6. Then you would have something to hang your hat on. | :21:49. | :21:56.
Unfortunately, a few of these Scotland boys looking fatigued. Just | :21:57. | :22:03.
absolutely fatigued. Handled into the contact. Here we go. What a | :22:04. | :22:14.
step. And they have got men on the far side. Mansour diving for the | :22:15. | :22:24.
corner. Australia run in another score. Too easy. And it was Maloney, | :22:25. | :22:36.
and you can see Brooks just getting back possession. One of the best in | :22:37. | :22:46.
the business. Good skill. Mansour, diving finish to the left hand | :22:47. | :22:51.
corner. Just so quick, Australia. Not giving you much space. | :22:52. | :23:05.
Opportunity for an off-load... Just straighten up here... Can they set | :23:06. | :23:10.
something up? Bobbling everywhere! Brierley. On his Scotland debut. It | :23:11. | :23:37.
was always going to come from Brough. And the touchstone coming | :23:38. | :23:42.
from the man who was playing championship Rugby League six months | :23:43. | :23:49.
ago. What a moment. Scotland, ball in hand. And Brough, boot to ball. | :23:50. | :23:57.
Much better than that. Australia able to predict. Play on! Mansour | :23:58. | :24:13.
takes it on. So strong, the backfield for Australia. And that | :24:14. | :24:22.
came from the poor kick from Brough. Ferguson not going to catch them. | :24:23. | :24:29.
Dugan under the posts! Brilliant early scores, the second tower. It | :24:30. | :24:38.
is a great try from Dugan. Looking up, heartbreak, and then shifting | :24:39. | :24:48.
the point of attack. Dugan going through, good food won't to deceive | :24:49. | :24:56.
the full-back. -- footwork. You cannot criticise the lack of hunger | :24:57. | :25:01.
in the Scotland side. But when Australia get the head of steam up | :25:02. | :25:08.
like this... It is difficult. Over halfway. Look at the power! Not | :25:09. | :25:20.
going to be stopped. Yes he will! Just millimetres from the line. | :25:21. | :25:27.
Penalty. He had to do that. That could have been a yellow card. How | :25:28. | :25:33.
strong was Tyson? It is brave defence from Scotland. Good luck | :25:34. | :25:42.
Scotland, defending here against the world champions. That is the first | :25:43. | :25:47.
hurdle overcome... But that is going to make it even more difficult. | :25:48. | :25:58.
Every time they get ball in hand causing all sorts of problems. Lost | :25:59. | :26:08.
it! Now he has not. Scotland interfering. Again. Three in a row. | :26:09. | :26:19.
Maloney... Loose one! Scotland survive. That was poor execution | :26:20. | :26:32.
from Australia, Tierney was quick to get on that, Aitken and Tierney. | :26:33. | :26:42.
That is the difference. That was a break, but he was on his back. Can | :26:43. | :26:47.
they make that crime. Scotland can see the posts! The chance for | :26:48. | :26:59.
Tierney? No! Just too many kangaroo numbers. Going to try to run it. The | :27:00. | :27:08.
power play. Not sure that was the correct option. I am not sure what | :27:09. | :27:19.
he was seeing down the short side, bit of science from Scotland. Brough | :27:20. | :27:23.
going through the middle but could not take advantage. Probably taking | :27:24. | :27:31.
the wrong option. Just giving Australia cheap possession. The | :27:32. | :27:42.
danger pretty much relentless for Scotland. Tired towards the end of | :27:43. | :27:49.
the first half. Legs getting weary towards the final quarter? Going up | :27:50. | :28:00.
against 17 absolute beasts in the kangaroo jerseys. Some good intent | :28:01. | :28:07.
from Scotland. It has been intercepted. Going all the way! | :28:08. | :28:16.
Brough, going to need support. He has found some support. But nothing | :28:17. | :28:26.
there! Great chase from Cronk! Surely some room for Tierney! Hurt! | :28:27. | :28:38.
Just how quick are Australia, getting back. All 13 back behind the | :28:39. | :28:47.
ball enough large. -- in a flash. Just exceptionally quick. We have | :28:48. | :28:53.
seen him finish them so often. And it was Cronk chasing him down. Could | :28:54. | :28:57.
not take advantage, Scotland. And this was the play. Just stepped on | :28:58. | :29:06.
the right foot. Train to leave the defender. He has done something. Not | :29:07. | :29:12.
sure what that was. That stoppage, not going in Scotland's fever. It | :29:13. | :29:23.
is! A try! Kavanagh. Scotland get the second of the evening. And they | :29:24. | :29:30.
deserve it. We see the intercept from Brough, not having the legs to | :29:31. | :29:41.
score, Cronk chased him down, had some composure and kept the ball. He | :29:42. | :29:46.
remember that from one-time Kavanagh.. | :29:47. | :29:51.
A bit of niggly! -- niggly. Good shot. They don't want to get too | :29:52. | :30:04.
excited, Scotland. I don't think they are going to win a fight. They | :30:05. | :30:12.
needed to ruffle some feathers. It is getting tasty now. It is getting | :30:13. | :30:21.
spicy! We needed a bit of this from the Scots in the first half. Ruffle | :30:22. | :30:26.
some feathers, disrupt the Aussies. I think it was Frizzell. He has got | :30:27. | :30:39.
away with it here. Hello! He is very fortunate. Tyson Frizell could take | :30:40. | :30:43.
a breather for that. This is how we saw Australia in the | :30:44. | :30:59.
first half. Prepared to go kick for kick. They need to be careful they | :31:00. | :31:10.
don't get carried away. That is the danger. You start to get | :31:11. | :31:15.
comfortable. They do not need a second invitation. Penalty to | :31:16. | :31:23.
Australia. You have to learn your lesson. Scotland didn't learn it | :31:24. | :31:27.
from the first half. They were made to pay in the first half. Will they | :31:28. | :31:36.
be made to pay here? They can see the posts. Australia looking for | :31:37. | :31:47.
only their second score of the half in which Scotland have competed | :31:48. | :31:54.
well. How solid, how watertight is the Scotland defence? He deserves | :31:55. | :32:03.
that! Australia move further clear. Every time Frizzell has had the ball | :32:04. | :32:07.
in his hand, he has caused Scotland all sorts of problems. Danny Brough, | :32:08. | :32:13.
the Scottish captain, when asked about what he hoped from the game, | :32:14. | :32:20.
he said, we will try to get a win, but let's not get embarrassed. They | :32:21. | :32:27.
have done one of the two. Australia absolutely tell them apart. Michael | :32:28. | :32:30.
Morgan adds another four. Scotland needs to be careful. That | :32:31. | :32:39.
combination. Matt Moylan and Maloney. Michael Morgan takes | :32:40. | :32:49.
advantage. The final throws of the opening match of the Four Nations. | :32:50. | :32:59.
Have Australia got one more score? They can eat up that ground so | :33:00. | :33:07.
quickly. Here we go! He will go to the line! Australia bring up the | :33:08. | :33:18.
half-century. Ten tries to two in favour of Australia. Scotland have | :33:19. | :33:24.
not been completely thumped. They have been overpowered and outscored | :33:25. | :33:30.
but they have not been embarrassed. 54-12 firm Ma'u Meninga's Australia. | :33:31. | :33:38.
Extremely happy with the first half. We started well. Controlled the | :33:39. | :33:43.
ball, controlled field position. We made our points. Extremely pleased. | :33:44. | :33:49.
Got away with a good victory. It was a bit messy at times. | :33:50. | :33:55.
I'm pretty sure we can improve. They were excellent. The execution of the | :33:56. | :34:00.
play was good. We challenged them at times. Maybe we should have | :34:01. | :34:04.
challenged them a little bit more. Our effort and determination was | :34:05. | :34:06.
good. Something to build on. It was nice | :34:07. | :34:13.
to get a victory. A few things we need to sort out. Particularly our | :34:14. | :34:19.
tackle to and ball control. -- tackles. A lot of those players have | :34:20. | :34:24.
not played a lot of football in the last couple of months. We expect a | :34:25. | :34:29.
little bit of lack of cohesion. But we expect better ball control. We | :34:30. | :34:36.
got off to a good start. Credit to Scotland, they came back and got a | :34:37. | :34:39.
couple of tries. It was a good finish from the boys. We probably | :34:40. | :34:43.
turned a bit too much ball over, which we can't do in the next couple | :34:44. | :34:50.
of games. Australia can do that to any team. We will get better as the | :34:51. | :34:54.
tournament goes on. We showed a lot of spirit in the second half. We had | :34:55. | :35:02.
a dig and we will get better for next week. | :35:03. | :35:11.
Confirmation of the result. 54-12. Next week we bring you that | :35:12. | :35:15.
double-header, England against Scotland and New Zealand against | :35:16. | :35:19.
Australia. The final is on November the 20th. It takes place at Anfield. | :35:20. | :35:29.
Kevin Sinfield, Robbie Hunter Paul and Jonathan Davies with me. | :35:30. | :35:35.
Scotland ranked ninth in the world. His 54-12 A creditable result? Yeah, | :35:36. | :35:42.
I think it probably is. The fourth nation has always found it very | :35:43. | :35:49.
difficult to compete. It has always been tough for them. I suppose that | :35:50. | :35:54.
is the age-old debate about what can be done to get the fourth nation, | :35:55. | :36:01.
whoever it may be, to a better standard? That is a long-term | :36:02. | :36:08.
project. It is. That fourth nation needs to develop that talent. They | :36:09. | :36:12.
get to compete on a higher level with the big three. That then draws | :36:13. | :36:17.
through where they need to get themselves. When they go back home, | :36:18. | :36:28.
they should take the experience from the Four Nations and play at a | :36:29. | :36:37.
higher level. Also, if the Pacific Islands are good enough, they play | :36:38. | :36:40.
for Australia or New Zealand. If they make a law and say, where are | :36:41. | :36:44.
you from? This is who you are going to play for. Those nations are | :36:45. | :36:50.
exceptionally strong in rugby league players. If they can keep them in | :36:51. | :36:53.
their respective countries, that will strengthen the competition. We | :36:54. | :36:57.
talk about Wales, France and Scotland, it is always going to be a | :36:58. | :37:01.
learning curve. They are so far adrift from the other three. They | :37:02. | :37:05.
have to take this and learn from it. The next World Cup in England is | :37:06. | :37:09.
2021. That is a longer term project than the one next year. By 2021, | :37:10. | :37:14.
does there need to be more international rugby league played to | :37:15. | :37:17.
get other countries to a better standard? I think so. I'm really | :37:18. | :37:23.
excited about this tournament. I loved International Rugby Board. | :37:24. | :37:26.
Rugby league needs to put that back on the map. You have got three | :37:27. | :37:32.
fantastic teams. Three teams very close in quality. For me, the rugby | :37:33. | :37:39.
league and the NRL in Australia, this is a priority. It should be a | :37:40. | :37:48.
priority. The French really miss international rugby league. I think | :37:49. | :37:54.
this tournament will go some way to establishing rugby internationally | :37:55. | :37:56.
because the quality, hopefully, will be fantastic. Just on Scotland, I | :37:57. | :38:02.
think it's important to point out that the points Australia scored | :38:03. | :38:06.
were in the opening 15 minutes and the closing 15 minutes. For the | :38:07. | :38:11.
middle 50 minutes, they are actually held their own. That can happen with | :38:12. | :38:18.
those emerging nations. They are playing the world champions, the | :38:19. | :38:20.
perceived number one team in the world, and then fitness takes over | :38:21. | :38:27.
in the final 15 minutes. It is a mixture of NRL, Super League and | :38:28. | :38:31.
championship players. Did you learn anything about Australia from that | :38:32. | :38:37.
game? They are dangerous! We know that. They will be a threat to | :38:38. | :38:41.
England. I thought Scotland did OK. I don't think they were embarrassed. | :38:42. | :38:46.
They will have a shot at England next week. That would be a challenge | :38:47. | :38:51.
in itself. Australia still have some special talent. International rugby | :38:52. | :38:59.
is more about patience. If you watch Australia, if there is nothing on, | :39:00. | :39:03.
they will kick the ball and have a repeat set. They will wait until the | :39:04. | :39:11.
80th minute to win the game. I think that is where England and maybe | :39:12. | :39:17.
Scotland have two score. It is like a game of chess. You have to be | :39:18. | :39:23.
patient. When the operative -- opportunities come at international | :39:24. | :39:27.
level, they have to take them. Let's turn our attention to the game at | :39:28. | :39:33.
Huddersfield. It is a have passed to kick off between England and New | :39:34. | :39:37.
Zealand. England have a new captain. Big Sam is back. I'm Sam Burgess, | :39:38. | :39:42.
the new England captain. Last time I wore this shirt, it was ecstasy. | :39:43. | :40:04.
Followed by the agony. It is New Zealand in the World Cup final! | :40:05. | :40:09.
The boys have done me proud since I have been away. | :40:10. | :40:21.
They got their revenge last year. England's first test series in eight | :40:22. | :40:27.
years. Now it's time for me to make my mark once again. | :40:28. | :40:35.
What a fabulous try! I'm back where I belong. | :40:36. | :40:42.
Jonathan Davies, there will be so many eyes on him this afternoon? | :40:43. | :40:50.
Yeah. Every interview he has done, it reverts back to rugby union. For | :40:51. | :40:59.
me, he is a fantastic player. And a fantastic bloke. He brings a lot to | :41:00. | :41:07.
the camp. Rob has welcomed him back in Australia and in England. He is | :41:08. | :41:10.
fantastic for the game of rugby late. I'm looking forward to seeing | :41:11. | :41:15.
him play. There will be warming up very shortly. -- they will be. | :41:16. | :41:21.
Kevin Sinfield takes us through the England team. We start with the back | :41:22. | :41:29.
three. Jonny Lomax is in ahead of Kevin Latchford. On the wings, | :41:30. | :41:35.
Jermaine McGillvary back on his home ground with the big, strong Ryan | :41:36. | :41:42.
Hall. A formidable record. Sarginson gets the nod ahead of Percival. That | :41:43. | :41:48.
is because of his Grand Final form. Kallum Watkins, arguably the second | :41:49. | :41:52.
best centre in the world. A chance to shine today. Gareth Widdop, the | :41:53. | :42:00.
NFL star, alongside Luke Gale. It is important how these two perform | :42:01. | :42:07.
today. A crucial partnership. The front row props, the ever dependable | :42:08. | :42:12.
Chris Hill and James Graham, the star of many a year for England. | :42:13. | :42:16.
Another star attraction in Josh Hodgson, close to winning an award | :42:17. | :42:25.
in Australia. If he is on form today, he will be fantastic. In the | :42:26. | :42:31.
back row, John Bateman and Elliott Whitehead have had fantastic seasons | :42:32. | :42:35.
in the Super League and NFL. -- NRL respectively. Sam Burgess was | :42:36. | :42:43.
arguably the best player in the world last time he played against | :42:44. | :42:46.
New Zealand. On the bench, the younger twin brothers, Tom Burgess | :42:47. | :42:56.
and George Burgess. The ever dependable Daryl Clark, outstanding | :42:57. | :43:01.
dummy half, expecting to come on at some stage. He will rip the defence | :43:02. | :43:09.
up. Mike Cooper keeps his place. It will have been a close call between | :43:10. | :43:14.
him and Liam Farrell. I think Mike had a great game against France last | :43:15. | :43:18.
week. One of the beauties of doing | :43:19. | :43:21.
international rugby league is you get people are watching it who may | :43:22. | :43:27.
not watch during the season. Let me take Kallum Watkins. You said he | :43:28. | :43:30.
could be the second best centre in the world be hired Greg Inglis. He | :43:31. | :43:35.
is a former team-mate of yours? For those casual fans, what can they | :43:36. | :43:42.
expect from him? Very, very strong. Athletic. Great skill level. His | :43:43. | :43:48.
feet are unbelievable. For a big man he can take defences apart. He can | :43:49. | :43:52.
turn on a sixpence. He can score tries for fun. It would be great to | :43:53. | :43:56.
see is combination with McGillvary today. It will be great to see | :43:57. | :44:04.
Kallum Watkins run at the defence. I'm a big fan of his. He has had a | :44:05. | :44:12.
quiet season with Leeds. If he's going to be a world-class operator, | :44:13. | :44:17.
this is where you have to perform. I hope that he is given that platform. | :44:18. | :44:21.
He has got all the ability in the world. I hope he really does take is | :44:22. | :44:25.
opportunity and shows the sporting world how good he is. | :44:26. | :44:30.
From the England changing room to the New Zealand team. | :44:31. | :44:36.
Robbie Hunter Paul. The back strike weapons, you have the ever save | :44:37. | :44:41.
Jordan Kahu flanked by Jason Nightingale and the try scoring | :44:42. | :44:48.
machine Jordan Rapana. In the centre you have Solomone Kata, very | :44:49. | :44:55.
powerful. As wide as he is tall. He can strike from anywhere. You also | :44:56. | :45:00.
have Shaun Kenny-Dowall, he has been around a long time. He knows how to | :45:01. | :45:06.
play international football. Then we have the spine of the team, Tom | :45:07. | :45:13.
Leuluai, known for his time in Wigan. The pairing with Shawn | :45:14. | :45:18.
Johnson with the New Zealand Warriors in the last couple of years | :45:19. | :45:23.
has been great. The mercurial Shaun Johnson. The heartbreaker of all | :45:24. | :45:28.
England rugby league supporters. In the front row you will start with | :45:29. | :45:31.
the man in the middle leading them around the park, Issac Luke. He has | :45:32. | :45:35.
had a quiet year but he is looking for a big tournament. Jesse Bromwich | :45:36. | :45:40.
will be twinned with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. The on field in | :45:41. | :45:47.
force. In the back of the pack you have Kevin Proctor and Tohu Harris. | :45:48. | :45:53.
They can strike from either side of the field. They will score tries if | :45:54. | :45:58.
given the opportunity. At the back of the field you have Jason | :45:59. | :46:01.
Taumalolo, the number one metre maker in the NRL this year. A tough | :46:02. | :46:08.
player and one to watch. Off the bench you have Lewis Brown, who can | :46:09. | :46:14.
score anywhere at any time. Martin Taupau, an explosive player. Keep an | :46:15. | :46:22.
eye on him. He is one to watch. And we finish off the bench with these | :46:23. | :46:28.
two enforcers. Manu Maroh and Adam Blair. -- Manu Maroh. | :46:29. | :46:35.
Robbie, thank you. Robbie is going down pit side. Wayne Bennett is | :46:36. | :46:44.
already in the stands. He is watching England start their warm up | :46:45. | :46:50.
below us. Earlier this week he coddled with Dave Woods. | :46:51. | :47:06.
Good to see you. How much are you looking forward to this series? I | :47:07. | :47:14.
was relieved keen to come a week ago. Nothing has changed. I am | :47:15. | :47:17.
pleased with the players. I've been working with them. The attitude is | :47:18. | :47:21.
good. One game under the belt against the wells. I was pleased | :47:22. | :47:30.
with that. Defensively they were pretty strong. They made some good | :47:31. | :47:34.
decisions with the football. I left with some confidence about what we | :47:35. | :47:39.
have to do going forward. The England squad, has it been a | :47:40. | :47:45.
learning process? Yes, it has. There are eight in the NRL who are here | :47:46. | :47:56.
with us. There is another 16 from the Super League. I've been | :47:57. | :48:02.
impressed with these guys. One group play in a very competitive | :48:03. | :48:09.
environment. Whereas here, the level of competitiveness among all the | :48:10. | :48:14.
clubs is high. The NRL players can provide the leadership. | :48:15. | :48:21.
You made Sam Burgess the captain. Whether any doubts in your mind? A | :48:22. | :48:26.
little bit. I have a lot of time for James. He has been captain in | :48:27. | :48:33.
Australia. Sammy is the ideal fit. He needs to be challenged more. | :48:34. | :48:38.
James is getting the best of himself every weekend. On Saturday, what are | :48:39. | :48:42.
the thoughts when you sit down and the English national anthem is | :48:43. | :48:48.
played? I was brought with God save the Queen in country. I won't sing | :48:49. | :48:54.
the anthem. It is not my anthem. We were brought with it. That was the | :48:55. | :48:59.
time. I was a young boy in Australia in the 50s. When you are a | :49:00. | :49:03.
professional coach, which I've been for a long time, it is the coaching | :49:04. | :49:05.
that matters most of all. From an England point of view, not | :49:06. | :49:20.
having won a series since 1972, what do you feel it'll do to the health | :49:21. | :49:24.
of the international game if England were to triumph? Firstly, we have to | :49:25. | :49:29.
get some consistency and play our best. I love the way everybody keep | :49:30. | :49:35.
talking about winning the Four Nations. But it's not that easy. I | :49:36. | :49:39.
don't fall into that trap. That is said by people who have probably | :49:40. | :49:44.
never had the responsibility or the expectation that these players have | :49:45. | :49:48.
placed on them. My job is to try to remove that as much as I can. Try to | :49:49. | :49:53.
get them to play to their potential. If they can do that, we have a | :49:54. | :49:57.
chance. If we don't get near that, they can dream as much as they like. | :49:58. | :50:01.
Another year and nothing has happened. | :50:02. | :50:04.
Wayne Bennett makes his debut in the Four Nations as head coach. He | :50:05. | :50:11.
coached last week against France. He has a world-class record. You can | :50:12. | :50:21.
see his record there. He has experience, he has success. Is that | :50:22. | :50:26.
what you need at international level to get international players to buy | :50:27. | :50:33.
into what you are trying to do? He has been here a couple of weeks and | :50:34. | :50:36.
I have been really impressed with what he has done. There are a couple | :50:37. | :50:39.
of things I pick-up from him already. The first is he keeps it | :50:40. | :50:45.
really simple. The players Larrondo no illusions about what he expects. | :50:46. | :50:49.
He makes it very enjoyable during the sessions. The lads have come off | :50:50. | :50:54.
the training field with a big smile on their face. Simple philosophies | :50:55. | :51:00.
but they seem to work. A 42 year coaching career. There is all this | :51:01. | :51:04.
scientific stuff out there that you can tap into. I'm sure he does. Do | :51:05. | :51:09.
you think you may be tapped into it away from the players but in front | :51:10. | :51:16.
of the players he keeps it simple? Yeah, possibly. He alluded to it. He | :51:17. | :51:20.
takes the pressure and expectation away from the players. He is happy | :51:21. | :51:25.
to carry that. He does not give much away. He keeps his cards close to | :51:26. | :51:30.
his chest. It is a big test for England today. A big test for Wayne. | :51:31. | :51:35.
Hopefully we come through it with flying colours. Does a lot of it | :51:36. | :51:40.
sound like common sense? Yes, the only trouble with common sense is it | :51:41. | :51:45.
is not common enough. I do feel as a player you can't remember a lot of | :51:46. | :51:51.
things that coaches tell you. A couple of key points. If you can | :51:52. | :51:56.
simplify the game for these players and then they've got to play outside | :51:57. | :52:02.
of that structure when the opportunity arises, he is doing his | :52:03. | :52:05.
job. For me, the key thing is belief. He knows these Australian | :52:06. | :52:11.
players. He knows the Kiwi players. For me, it is the mixture of the NRL | :52:12. | :52:16.
players and the Super League players. The pace of the game is | :52:17. | :52:21.
quicker and Australia. It is more competitive. They need to really hit | :52:22. | :52:28.
their marks very quickly. And then keep up the pace. Hopefully those | :52:29. | :52:32.
NRL players will have dragged the pace of the training session up. | :52:33. | :52:40.
When I played in Australia took me weeks to get adjusted to the pace | :52:41. | :52:46.
playing with the Australians. For me, playing with pace and tempo and | :52:47. | :52:51.
patience, the calibre of player is good enough in England to win this | :52:52. | :52:55.
competition. In the background the Australian coach Ma'u Malinga -- | :52:56. | :53:04.
Ma'u Meninga, talking about Wayne Bennett, said that is problem was | :53:05. | :53:10.
that not that he wanted the England job, but that as a grown man and a | :53:11. | :53:14.
professional he should be able to accept the decision once it has been | :53:15. | :53:19.
made. It does annoy me that he is in the background chipping away trying | :53:20. | :53:22.
to undermine my authority and my position with the Australian Rugby. | :53:23. | :53:27.
There are plenty more quotes. We hope to talk to Meninga at the end | :53:28. | :53:36.
of the game. -- Meninga. I am guessing that Wayne Bennett was not | :53:37. | :53:41.
really care? I don't think you will bother. He said he has not seen it. | :53:42. | :53:46.
I suspect he probably has. It will not be in his focus or his mind | :53:47. | :53:50.
today. He will concentrate on his job. I have to say the Aussies maybe | :53:51. | :53:55.
a little bit worried. I hope the case. I hope he has come out with | :53:56. | :54:03.
this because he is wary of England. Let's get off to a great start. | :54:04. | :54:09.
Let's scare them little bit more. On the flip side, it might be the | :54:10. | :54:13.
motivation that they don't need, the Australians. If you're talking about | :54:14. | :54:21.
Superstars, may be Ma'u Meninga is just above him. I don't like people | :54:22. | :54:26.
bickering in public. Let's hope it is forgotten and we have some great | :54:27. | :54:30.
rugby. For the moment, thank you. Let's | :54:31. | :54:34.
turn our attentions to the players involved and what they are going to | :54:35. | :54:38.
have to do. Robbie Hunter Paul is in the thick of it. I've got to be | :54:39. | :54:43.
careful I don't get run over. When they talk about this England squad, | :54:44. | :54:48.
they talk about size and power. Yes, they do have size and power. They | :54:49. | :54:53.
will start with James Graham. Chris Hill, a very big man. The other | :54:54. | :54:59.
power punchers, the Burgess twins, off the bench. Look at the size of | :55:00. | :55:09.
these guys. False to they are not just size and power. Daryl Clark has | :55:10. | :55:15.
skill and ability. Josh Hodgson, quick. Plays with his head on a | :55:16. | :55:20.
swivel. Then that man in the middle, Sam Burgess, the guy who is going to | :55:21. | :55:24.
lead them from the front. We love him back in rugby league. He will be | :55:25. | :55:27.
looking to do a job in his first test. | :55:28. | :55:35.
We have spoken a lot about the new England captain. He is in the thick | :55:36. | :55:42.
of it with words to his England team-mates. Here are the words he | :55:43. | :55:45.
has been saying to the woods this week. | :55:46. | :56:03.
Sam, welcome back. How does it feel to be back? It's great to be back in | :56:04. | :56:09.
England, especially playing rugby league on home soil. I've always | :56:10. | :56:14.
enjoyed representing my country and even more so in the motherland. It's | :56:15. | :56:16.
nice to be back. New coach in Wayne Bennett. What | :56:17. | :56:38.
have you noticed about him? He has helped open the younger guys in the | :56:39. | :56:40.
squad and given a different viewpoint firmly. He has opened my | :56:41. | :56:44.
eyes too few things. He has brought a sense of belief. Everybody values | :56:45. | :56:50.
him. The last time you were in the England shirt it was the other code, | :56:51. | :56:54.
which did not go as well as you wanted. Have you got something to | :56:55. | :56:59.
prove? Not really. I don't feel I have to prove myself to anybody. It | :57:00. | :57:03.
is the wrong motivation to want to prove someone else wrong. I'm here | :57:04. | :57:08.
to play well with my team-mates. And do my coach and family pride. A big | :57:09. | :57:14.
NRL presents. How important is that from an English point of view? I | :57:15. | :57:20.
think it helps. They play a different brand of football. The | :57:21. | :57:25.
ball is thrown about a lot more. If you can combine the two, it's good. | :57:26. | :57:33.
My brothers and James have added a good deal to the squad. | :57:34. | :57:41.
What a try! Shaun Johnson with literally seconds | :57:42. | :57:45.
to play. Your last appearance in an England rugby league shirt was the | :57:46. | :57:49.
painful memory of the World Cup semifinal. How long did it take to | :57:50. | :57:54.
get that out of your system? I had a lot of mixed emotions that day. | :57:55. | :57:57.
Childhood dream to play at Wembley. One of the greatest test matches I | :57:58. | :58:02.
have been involved in. It was a tough battle for 80 minutes. | :58:03. | :58:05.
Unfortunately, we were on the losing side. Thoroughly disappointed with | :58:06. | :58:09.
that. Really proud of my team. The more I reflect on it, it didn't | :58:10. | :58:13.
really hurt. You have to learn from these things. As long as I have done | :58:14. | :58:19.
that, move forward. What is the dream this time? The dream is to be | :58:20. | :58:23.
the glorious for England and do something in rugby league team has | :58:24. | :58:27.
not done for a long time. To achieve that, you have to go a day at a | :58:28. | :58:30.
time. That is what it is going to take. As | :58:31. | :58:38.
we look at him continue to warm up, and remember that he made his debut | :58:39. | :58:44.
against New Zealand in 2007 here and scored a try, Kevin Sinfield, what | :58:45. | :58:50.
are the differences between Sam Burgess now and then? He is | :58:51. | :58:54.
obviously a bit more experienced. He went to the dark side for a while | :58:55. | :58:58.
and he came back. It is great to have him back. It has taken him a | :58:59. | :59:02.
little bit of time to settle in. It's great to have him back in this | :59:03. | :59:06.
country. He is a personality. He is up their with the best of them. He | :59:07. | :59:13.
is an inspiration. I don't want to put too much on his shoulders, but | :59:14. | :59:16.
if he plays well we will win this test match. Is there a danger he | :59:17. | :59:21.
will put too much on his own shoulders? That might be the case. | :59:22. | :59:27.
And that would allow Hill, because all of the onus on Sam. It is a | :59:28. | :59:45.
great opportunity. One of the best forward lines I have seen from | :59:46. | :59:51.
England in some time. And if the half backs can manage the game | :59:52. | :59:55.
England have got a good chance. One final thing, often sportsmen and | :59:56. | :00:06.
sportswomen Seaport they think we want to hear than what they believe, | :00:07. | :00:17.
but Samberg as -- Samberg as the national Sam Burgess does not feel | :00:18. | :00:22.
as though he has to prove anything? As I said earlier, when he left | :00:23. | :00:30.
after that game, the heartbreaking Dean, on that date was the best in | :00:31. | :00:40.
the world. If you can get back to that, that would be great. We have | :00:41. | :00:45.
spoken what about England. We can focus the attention back to New | :00:46. | :00:51.
Zealand. This is how Robbie thinks they will play. New Zealand will be | :00:52. | :00:57.
desperate to keep hold of this status as number one. It is going to | :00:58. | :01:02.
start with Issac Luke. He will be in charge of moving before us are in | :01:03. | :01:07.
the middle of the park. He will prove himself as a world-class | :01:08. | :01:19.
player, and another man Thomas Leuluai. People know him from Wigan, | :01:20. | :01:25.
and he will be coming back to Wigan at 2017. And with his partner Shaun | :01:26. | :01:34.
Johnson. Going to get the cameraman all the way down. This is one of the | :01:35. | :01:41.
best strike weapons. Shaun Johnson. If anybody has ever seen any of his | :01:42. | :01:46.
YouTube, take a look because he can use both feet, attack the line and | :01:47. | :01:51.
do things that we have never seen another Rugby League player do. This | :01:52. | :01:56.
is what New Zealand can offer and bring. You do not even need to look | :01:57. | :02:03.
at YouTube. We will show you some stuff just now. Practising has | :02:04. | :02:10.
kicking at the moment. And responsible for one of the most | :02:11. | :02:15.
heartbreaking moments when he scored that try at Wembley. Kevin, you were | :02:16. | :02:21.
in the semifinal. But how can you stop him? You have just got to keep | :02:22. | :02:29.
putting numbers around him, it was a heartbreaking moment, terrible to | :02:30. | :02:36.
see that again. Sorry. But she is just pure class. As I am concerned | :02:37. | :02:41.
about the experienced guys around him. Just going to be a big threat. | :02:42. | :02:52.
What you have got to try to do, stand firm, and to try to entice you | :02:53. | :03:00.
and then just skin you. Tries to break the line. But you have got to | :03:01. | :03:15.
pressurise his game. Kicking big four love taking the ball up in the | :03:16. | :03:25.
opposition 20 metres. But in their own area not so keen. Keep an eye on | :03:26. | :03:31.
the full backs. We asked the Kiwi players to describe the squad. Big | :03:32. | :03:42.
features a lot in this! Issac Luke, hooker. Jesse Bromwich, front row. | :03:43. | :03:55.
It is one of the strongest I have been part skilful. Fast. Big. Big. | :03:56. | :04:05.
Big. Shaun Johnson. Good on his feet. Adam Blair. Issac Luke. | :04:06. | :04:17.
Damaging runner. Just have a look at Issac Luke. Jason Taumalolo. I think | :04:18. | :04:26.
he has had an outstanding year. Some quality Football for club. His | :04:27. | :04:37.
enthusiasm energy. Passionate about his football. Passionate about New | :04:38. | :04:48.
Zealand Rugby League. Sam Burgess has come back. Should be physical. | :04:49. | :04:58.
Having a field day! I am a big fan of Josh Hodgson. We will come over | :04:59. | :05:06.
here, do the job and take this seriously. Here to work hard. It is | :05:07. | :05:17.
going to be a quality game. David, a lot of talk about you bringing some | :05:18. | :05:21.
passion back to the squad. How important is that, the culture? Yes. | :05:22. | :05:27.
Remembering the past, the blood and the summit. That is pretty | :05:28. | :05:39.
important, and it gets a lot of focus, the culture as well. We have | :05:40. | :05:44.
had a good week of preparation and learned a lot of things from the | :05:45. | :05:56.
test at Perth. Guys will be better for that under the belt. | :05:57. | :05:58.
You have not had long in the job, what are some of the messages you | :05:59. | :06:04.
are trying to get across? We just want to be defensively nascent | :06:05. | :06:10.
strong in the medal and I think the game is going to be one in the | :06:11. | :06:15.
middle, two big packs, something that is going to be a good spectacle | :06:16. | :06:22.
for the people here and on tv. We have had a lot of focus about Sam | :06:23. | :06:28.
Burgess coming back to Rugby League, captaining, you have got Shaun | :06:29. | :06:33.
Johnson. Yes. Big part of the squad but it is about the 17 out there. | :06:34. | :06:41.
And getting Sam Burgess back, it is great. Good to see him back. But it | :06:42. | :06:48.
is about the 17 for us. Knowing the role, focus. And because of the | :06:49. | :06:55.
competition, how much pressure to win this game? I do not know about | :06:56. | :07:01.
pressure. We just try to walk on the processes, and do what we were doing | :07:02. | :07:06.
before the previous game. Just making sure that we execute today. | :07:07. | :07:14.
Good luck. Thank you. As we looked at the dressing room pictures, you | :07:15. | :07:19.
have been in that dressing room so many times, how much are you taking | :07:20. | :07:26.
him at this stage? Very little. A lot of conversation still going on | :07:27. | :07:30.
at this stage, but you are in the zone. It is quite nice moment, | :07:31. | :07:39.
before you go out for the kick off. Gladiator. And when New Zealand talk | :07:40. | :07:47.
about passion, is this more passionate than previous New Zealand | :07:48. | :07:53.
squads? They have got it back together, surprised by the lack of | :07:54. | :07:56.
performance against Australia to be to go. But it is hugely important, | :07:57. | :08:09.
part of the internal culture. Ready to go. England and New Zealand. The | :08:10. | :08:12.
four Nations. Over the commentators. We're ready. They are as well. Final | :08:13. | :08:52.
words with Gareth Widdop, but how much being heard, and understood? | :08:53. | :08:59.
The stadium nearly packed to the rafters. Already been in fine voice, | :09:00. | :09:06.
and it is only going to get louder and louder. | :09:07. | :09:16.
The two sides taking their place in the tunnel. A lot of expectation | :09:17. | :09:26.
here, New Zealand players going through the final motion. Big guys | :09:27. | :09:28.
in there! John, law won't coming up against | :09:29. | :09:49.
the England number 13, the retirement Sam Burgess. Chris Hill | :09:50. | :09:56.
putting on a scrum hat. And Jonny Lomax, also putting on that cap. | :09:57. | :10:08.
Final world for him from his coach. Only his second, got his first | :10:09. | :10:13.
against France last week. The referee waiting to bring them out. | :10:14. | :10:25.
Adam Blair, owing to be one of the late ones to exit, starting on the | :10:26. | :10:40.
interchange today. Three Burgess boys. Sam, Tom, George. Sam leads | :10:41. | :10:51.
them out. Ryan Hall as well. Jesse Bromwich leading note New Zealand. | :10:52. | :11:00.
New era. Could this be a new outcome? Listen to the noise. | :11:01. | :11:15.
It is a fantastic reception ahead of the game. When they deem itself was | :11:16. | :11:33.
born in 1895, a mile up the road, fitting this match should take place | :11:34. | :11:34.
here today. Some thunderous encounters down the | :11:35. | :11:43.
yields. Ahead of the game. -- years. As we will pause for the anthems, in | :11:44. | :11:54.
just a moment. Feel a few nerves around the place. That huge | :11:55. | :12:03.
expectation. And look at those huge fellas in black. Not going to lie | :12:04. | :12:09.
down. It should be one heck of a contest. And the New Zealand anthem. | :12:10. | :12:32.
God of Nations at Thy feet, In the bonds of love we meet, | :12:33. | :13:19.
Hear our voices, we entreat, God defend our free land. | :13:20. | :13:29.
Guard Pacific's triple star From the shafts of strife and war, | :13:30. | :13:37.
Make her praises heard afar, God defend New Zealand. | :13:38. | :14:02.
And the national anthem is going to be sung by Lizzie Jones. Recently | :14:03. | :14:14.
named as inspirational person of the year, for raising money for the | :14:15. | :14:16.
February to God save our gracious Queen Long | :14:17. | :14:24.
live our noble Queen God save the Queen, Send her victorious, | :14:25. | :14:37.
Happy and glorious. the roar that greeted that has | :14:38. | :15:14.
nearly lifted the roof. That headline act, Sam is back. Number | :15:15. | :15:24.
13. That Captain's armband. And as far as New Zealand are concerned, | :15:25. | :15:30.
some familiar names. Shaun Johnson. England heartbreaker years ago. | :15:31. | :15:46.
Robert Hicks is the ref. And we will be watching out for the video ref | :15:47. | :16:01.
decisions, if required. And Scotland Australia, not needing that once. | :16:02. | :16:11.
That is to be encouraged. Going to hesitate now, for the Haka. | :16:12. | :17:25.
Don't you love this time of year! Leaves turning orange. And the Haka | :17:26. | :17:42.
on the rugby pitch. Sarginson, at Melbourne, world-beater years ago. | :17:43. | :17:48.
And that is a world-class front row. Plenty of talent at the back three. | :17:49. | :17:58.
Sam, the captain. Twins on the bench. | :17:59. | :18:09.
And Daryl Clark can cause some problems. As far as New Zealand are | :18:10. | :18:18.
concerned, Shaun Johnson and Jesse Bromwich and the back three. Plenty | :18:19. | :18:35.
of muscle and hair! Some fantastic match ups to look forward to. Not | :18:36. | :18:44.
the least, out of the dummy half. A lot of the Australian commentators | :18:45. | :18:50.
have been begging not Josh Hodgson. He has been outstanding. But Issac | :18:51. | :18:57.
Luke, no mean competitor. Could have a massive influence. You can see | :18:58. | :19:09.
that hit the NRL. In overall playing terms, Josh Hodgson has definitely | :19:10. | :19:15.
shaded it. He has been outstanding for Canberra. It is a massive match | :19:16. | :19:23.
up. Physically, two sets of monsters. But massive in terms of | :19:24. | :19:30.
this competition as well. No winners will take a massive step towards the | :19:31. | :19:37.
final. New era for England. Could this competition produce a new | :19:38. | :19:47.
outcome. 1972, the last competition victory, 44 years of staring into | :19:48. | :19:51.
the abyss. It is time that they stopped it from staring back. We are | :19:52. | :20:02.
looking forward to this? We are. I think it is important for England, | :20:03. | :20:07.
you have got to control the game, to try to control the Kiwis. And we | :20:08. | :20:16.
have not really talked about Gareth Widdop, how he starts could | :20:17. | :20:23.
determine the game. That kick has been collected by Jermaine | :20:24. | :20:28.
McGillvary. The local boy, born not far from here, and he plays for the | :20:29. | :20:33.
Huddersfield Giants. That is what England have got. I think it is | :20:34. | :20:41.
controlling the tackling area, whoever gets on the front foot could | :20:42. | :20:46.
control the game. And England having significant influence. Charge. | :20:47. | :20:55.
Decent just inside Kiwi territory. Penalty for England. First important | :20:56. | :21:08.
moment of the game. I would take this, it is important to get in | :21:09. | :21:13.
front on the scoresheet. That is what they are doing. English | :21:14. | :21:21.
referee, how the Kiwis I just do that. All play in the NRL. More than | :21:22. | :21:27.
one referee there. But just one the focus here. That came off James | :21:28. | :21:34.
Graham. Done exceptionally well at the NRL. Hopefully taking advantage | :21:35. | :21:42.
of this to go two up. Interesting, intense conversations going on among | :21:43. | :21:53.
Sam Burgess and Chris Hill. Gareth Widdop, England have some decent | :21:54. | :22:04.
kickers. Banging them over! And would deal, SuperLeague's top | :22:05. | :22:08.
goal-scorer. Just keep taking the two. England lead 2-0, three | :22:09. | :22:16.
minutes. I think that is why will have got the advantage, we have got | :22:17. | :22:22.
the better kicking Dean, we have talked about Shaun Johnson, not | :22:23. | :22:28.
renowned for that. If we can get on the front foot with those, praying | :22:29. | :22:40.
position. -- prime. And here comes James Graham. Clutch of real area | :22:41. | :22:56.
performance, especially in the pack. Made their mark not just playing in | :22:57. | :23:01.
Australia, but with real pedigree. John Bateman to a smack. | :23:02. | :23:19.
England up to the halfway line. Five gone. Nightingale not going to take | :23:20. | :23:30.
the risk. I think they will be exceptionally happy. Two points on | :23:31. | :23:35.
the board, and 50 metres against the dominant Kiwi pack. Just taking the | :23:36. | :23:46.
sting out the game. Lead will be interesting, going to try to slow it | :23:47. | :23:51.
down or just keep things in play. They will be happy with how they | :23:52. | :23:56.
have started. It is a simple structure and Dean, that Wayne | :23:57. | :24:00.
Bennett goes for. Just rolling downfield. And later run, maybe. It | :24:01. | :24:12.
is a penalty for New Zealand. Consistency. That is the thing for | :24:13. | :24:20.
the penalty. And I think the referee probably just stamping his | :24:21. | :24:25.
authority. One for each team. Just letting them know who is in charge. | :24:26. | :24:37.
40 metre mark. And New Zealand, up towards the halfway line. Luke. And | :24:38. | :24:42.
Jason Taumalolo, but they have been | :24:43. | :25:00.
marshalled by Sam Burgess. Johnson going to the right-hand side. | :25:01. | :25:05.
Proctor, going close to the England line. Quick hands from Jesse | :25:06. | :25:17.
Bromwich. It is going to be viewed as a knock on. It was good lane | :25:18. | :25:24.
speed from Sam Burgess. So the opportunity to get at Jesse | :25:25. | :25:30.
Bromwich. Saw that coming. Unfortunate Sam Burgess. Telling New | :25:31. | :25:36.
Zealand the back-to-back set. Dangerous times. It is difficult at | :25:37. | :25:38.
Rugby League to defend. Taken the big centre out there. That | :25:39. | :26:01.
would have been a collector 's item, but instead, another. The other | :26:02. | :26:10.
penalty, differential penalty. Used to be ten a penny. Can't kick for | :26:11. | :26:21.
goal here. Because of the waving of the ref. Johnson, for Taumalolo. | :26:22. | :26:28.
Going within five metres of that England line. England waiting. | :26:29. | :26:38.
Defenders Jesse Bromwich muscling his way closer. Luke, switching | :26:39. | :26:54.
left. Did well there. He was targeting Luke Gale. In his face | :26:55. | :27:06.
quickly. Here comes Luke. Johnson. And then it goes again. Proctor. | :27:07. | :27:16.
England's defence muscling up well. Lasted five, here's six. Johnson, | :27:17. | :27:28.
the measure of his kick... That was a beautiful kick. Rushing up | :27:29. | :27:44.
quickly, they have got Jermaine McGillvary, and that was the | :27:45. | :27:47.
pressure building. Just building pressure against the England side. | :27:48. | :27:57.
Third set to defend. Hang on. Ref having a look. Whether this restart | :27:58. | :28:11.
should be a drop out... It has been confirmed, England drop. It is going | :28:12. | :28:21.
to be another set that England have got to defend. Jesse Bromwich. | :28:22. | :28:29.
Driving in. Actually made his club debut in this country against Leeds. | :28:30. | :28:38.
Hargreaves, lost the ball with the immensity of the Burgess tackle. | :28:39. | :28:48.
Welcome back Sam! Big hit! That has relieved the pressure. Needed that | :28:49. | :28:49.
tackle. Perfect tackle. Right underneath. | :28:50. | :29:18.
England's force laying a path here. Couple of tackles to go. Looking to | :29:19. | :29:30.
finish strongly. The referee says play on. Hall fumbles... England, | :29:31. | :29:42.
Gareth Widdop. It is taken by Jermaine McGillvary. Knocked around | :29:43. | :29:49.
all over the place. And it was a high tackle. The referee was playing | :29:50. | :29:51.
advantage. That was a great kick by widow. A | :29:52. | :30:03.
beautifully judged kick. He nearly got the off-load away. Great | :30:04. | :30:09.
thinking by widow. He knew that was a free play. -- Widdop. Perfectly | :30:10. | :30:18.
executed. Watkins just couldn't take the ball in. Superb play by Gareth | :30:19. | :30:23.
Widdop. Absolutely spot on, the referee. Perfect decision. They are | :30:24. | :30:31.
going for two again. I would as well. It could easily have been | :30:32. | :30:49.
four. Just missed. Jesse Bromwich, the New Zealand captain, has every | :30:50. | :30:53.
right to ask why and where -- wherefore. Referee just explaining | :30:54. | :31:01.
to him. This is Widdop's 20th appearance. He has spent most of his | :31:02. | :31:07.
life in Australia. The kick is a good one. Two out of two. England | :31:08. | :31:16.
lead by 4-0 with 11 minutes gone. England have done exceptionally well | :31:17. | :31:19.
to deal with the physicality of New Zealand. Sam Burgess has led from | :31:20. | :31:26.
the front, as you would expect. They have matched them blow for blow. A | :31:27. | :31:33.
couple of big The headlines:s to relieve the pressure. The lack of | :31:34. | :31:36.
discipline from the Kiwis has given them the start. -- a couple of big | :31:37. | :31:45.
hits. England have some big characters out there. Some of the | :31:46. | :31:52.
lesser experienced players are in decent company. | :31:53. | :32:05.
Burgess to add a little burst. Another penalty. -- Burgess had a | :32:06. | :32:17.
little burst. That comes with the tempo that England are playing at. | :32:18. | :32:20.
They are playing the ball exceptionally quick. The referee has | :32:21. | :32:29.
no option but to give a penalty. Way of sight. A very easy decision. The | :32:30. | :32:36.
third penalty that New Zealand have conceded already. Giving England a | :32:37. | :32:39.
very good position. Five tackles from here. Graham getting through | :32:40. | :32:49.
quite a bit of work early on. They have the Burgess brothers and Mike | :32:50. | :32:54.
Cooper to come off the bench. Bateman is such a terrier. He | :32:55. | :33:01.
punches above his weight. Gale to Lomax. Watkins decided not to pass. | :33:02. | :33:12.
Safety first. A wasted play with one to go. | :33:13. | :33:19.
A desperate act from Widdop. They were all of sight. The outside backs | :33:20. | :33:29.
had overrun because the pass was so poor. I would not be happy with the | :33:30. | :33:37.
last play. They are the fine details of international rugby league. A | :33:38. | :33:43.
poor pass by Watkins. Relieved the pressure for a New Zealand. The | :33:44. | :33:46.
can't afford to do that against a top team. -- you cannot afford to do | :33:47. | :33:51.
it. Lomax with a safe pair of hands. | :33:52. | :34:10.
What a good news story he has been this year. A big absence through | :34:11. | :34:16.
injury. But he has come back with terrific effect for Saint St Helens. | :34:17. | :34:22.
Especially in the latter half of the season. England need to keep their | :34:23. | :34:25.
composure at crucial times. Hodgson will go for the touchline | :34:26. | :35:00.
again. It flicked the boot of Kace. I like the balance of the England | :35:01. | :35:04.
team. They have great width with the ball in hand. They looked like they | :35:05. | :35:10.
have got options. New Zealand are quite prepared to go up the middle. | :35:11. | :35:21.
England look the more dangerous. Hodgson is controlling the tempo of | :35:22. | :35:26.
the game. Also, the variety in the kicking game. There is no pressure | :35:27. | :35:30.
on Nani of the kickers because they have got three kickers. England have | :35:31. | :35:40.
possession back again. They are rushing everything. Their forwards | :35:41. | :35:43.
are not getting yardage. They are going flat. I think they are a | :35:44. | :35:53.
little bit frustrated. They have not been able to go through the middle | :35:54. | :35:57.
of the England side. The physical presence of Burgess and Graham as | :35:58. | :36:00.
well. I think they are a little agitated. | :36:01. | :36:21.
John Bateman will just keep going and going. Wind him up and off he | :36:22. | :36:33.
goes. Widdop with a pastor Burgess. Burgess bursting on. Dealt with on | :36:34. | :36:40.
that occasion by Harris. A forward pass. The touch judge would have | :36:41. | :36:48.
called that. Again, just that little bit of composure. Hill just overran | :36:49. | :37:00.
it. He didn't expect Hodgson did take that step to the right. They | :37:01. | :37:05.
had an opportunity there. Just a couple of high end quality finishes | :37:06. | :37:18.
have not been there. Here come New Zealand. Ta Ma'loula is a massive | :37:19. | :37:34.
man. He is so difficult to stop. Size everywhere you look! | :37:35. | :37:52.
Rapana... New Zealand have made good metres in QuickTime. Kenny-Dowall | :37:53. | :38:05.
was abusing his position. McGillvary caught it and rent it back strong. | :38:06. | :38:13.
Physically New Zealand started to match England. A little bit of | :38:14. | :38:16.
fatigue in the England team. I don't think it will be long before | :38:17. | :38:39.
we see Thomas Burgess and Sam Burgess warming up. -- George | :38:40. | :38:49.
Burgess. A claim of obstruction against Rapana. James Child, the | :38:50. | :38:56.
touch judge, is on. This will be very interesting. He took that ball | :38:57. | :39:06.
with no problem whatsoever. That is a silly play. Rapana changed his | :39:07. | :39:12.
line very quickly. If he runs straight, there is no issue. But he | :39:13. | :39:17.
clearly ran laterally in front of Hall. Stopped him playing the | :39:18. | :39:23.
football. It is a silly penalty. There was no need for it. Whole was | :39:24. | :39:29.
never going to get to him. Again, indiscipline from the Kiwis. England | :39:30. | :39:35.
can put a score on here, a great platform. Bateman will lead by | :39:36. | :39:41.
example in the first instance. Burgess is capable of anything from | :39:42. | :39:58.
they're. A surge, a soft handed pass. Terrific by Jermaine | :39:59. | :40:08.
McGillvary. Brilliant defence as well. | :40:09. | :40:17.
Sam Burgess... A couple of tackles. A lot of wrestling from Harris. | :40:18. | :40:34.
Widdop out wide. He passed to Hall. There was a chance. They are | :40:35. | :40:38.
creating opportunities either side, England. Last ditch defence. | :40:39. | :40:49.
Watkins! Taken safely by Nightingale, who is back in the | :40:50. | :40:54.
field of play. A split-second of an opportunity for Sarginson. | :40:55. | :41:08.
With the possession and the position, the chances will start to | :41:09. | :41:12.
come for England. It's a fairly static start from | :41:13. | :41:31.
Taumalolo. The sixth tackle is next. Johnson with a deeper kick than he | :41:32. | :41:38.
might have wanted. New Zealand are not clicking at this moment. Issac | :41:39. | :41:47.
Luke has started to come out of dummy have a little bit more | :41:48. | :41:50.
regularly. It is only a matter of time before we see some good stuff | :41:51. | :41:57.
from this Kiwi side. England look organised, they look threatening. | :41:58. | :42:04.
They have sadly had the ascendancy in the first 20 minutes. -- | :42:05. | :42:08.
certainly. England very quickly establishing | :42:09. | :42:27.
position. A lovely flick from Hill. Hodgson carried it on. Widdop on the | :42:28. | :42:36.
chase. It is great to be a concession of a drop out. England | :42:37. | :42:40.
forced the drop out. England have to defend another set. Clever play. | :42:41. | :42:51.
Let's here from Robbie Hunter Paul. What are you making of this? I am | :42:52. | :42:56.
feeling a little worried. New Zealand struggling. I think it is | :42:57. | :43:05.
down to a couple of things. Chris Hill and Sam Burgess, quick foot -- | :43:06. | :43:09.
quick footwork at the line. New Zealand are constantly on the back | :43:10. | :43:18.
foot. A lot of energy being taken out of New Zealand. England probably | :43:19. | :43:21.
a little bit guilty of overplaying a couple of times. Some worrying times | :43:22. | :43:24.
for New Zealand right now. James Graham is labouring hard in | :43:25. | :43:41.
these early stages. Midway through the first half. There was a New | :43:42. | :43:51.
Zealand hand in there. It will be another set of six. Burgess... | :43:52. | :43:56.
Testing the resolve of those Kiwi defenders. The tackle count starts | :43:57. | :44:05.
from here. Bateman... John Bateman is so strong. How many times has he | :44:06. | :44:10.
done that this year for Wigan Warriors? Not quite strong enough to | :44:11. | :44:18.
get over the line. Hodgson stands and weights. Here come England. The | :44:19. | :44:24.
first touch for Tom Burgess since his entry onto the field. A very | :44:25. | :44:35.
solid drive. Gael put it short. -- Gael. | :44:36. | :44:39.
What a pass! James Graham very nearly... Well, he seemed to roll | :44:40. | :44:53.
out the arm. The referee is saying no try on the field. He was in a | :44:54. | :44:59.
spot on position. Let's here from the video referee. | :45:00. | :45:06.
Tackle four, no try. Coming into tackle four. I'm going to need to | :45:07. | :45:13.
see whether his arm touches the ground. He takes possession cleanly. | :45:14. | :45:19.
That is OK. As the ball in the right arm. That is part of the momentum of | :45:20. | :45:23.
the tackle, which is short at that point. Can we get something from | :45:24. | :45:31.
side on? The momentum of the tackle doesn't take over. The arm has | :45:32. | :45:38.
contacted the ground well short of the goal-line. The body never made | :45:39. | :45:47.
it to the goal-line. No try. It is a penalty. | :45:48. | :45:56.
The fans are cheering but they will be disappointed. Double movement. | :45:57. | :46:07.
That was a great opportunity. They shot over the line. The pass beat | :46:08. | :46:11.
the inside defender. I thought he was clear. You have to applaud the | :46:12. | :46:16.
last ditch defence of the Kiwis. They have been absolutely brilliant | :46:17. | :46:20.
at that in the last ten or 15 minutes. The pressure England have | :46:21. | :46:23.
had, you feel they have to get something from it. You have to say, | :46:24. | :46:29.
is there a danger that for all England have dominated, it is only | :46:30. | :46:36.
4-0? Yes, it is definitely a game of inches, Rugby. We have seen a couple | :46:37. | :46:39.
of opportunities missed through lack of execution or misfortune. You feel | :46:40. | :46:47.
that New Zealand, at some point they will explode into action with the | :46:48. | :46:48.
quality they have. I couple of tackles in this set for | :46:49. | :47:22.
New Zealand. Jesse Bromwich tried to put a step on. Here is the last | :47:23. | :47:31.
tackle. Leuluai with a grubber kick. It had to be dealt with. McGillvary | :47:32. | :47:39.
did it. That is the pressure New Zealand are trying to create. A | :47:40. | :47:46.
lovely kick by Leuluai. Perfectly weighted. McGillvary just made sure | :47:47. | :47:50.
it went over. We have not seen too many off-loads so far from New | :47:51. | :47:54.
Zealand. That is where they become dangerous, when they get those | :47:55. | :47:59.
off-loads. Shaun Johnson, Issac Luke... Also, fatigue. 25 minutes | :48:00. | :48:08.
gone. England have given everything in attack. Now it is their turn to | :48:09. | :48:10.
defend. Adam Blair up against his club coach | :48:11. | :48:23.
today. A player with the Brisbane Broncos. Many suggesting his career | :48:24. | :48:29.
was resurrected when he moved to Brisbane under the stewardship of | :48:30. | :48:40.
Wayne Bennett. Cries of forward pass from being and supporters, with some | :48:41. | :48:47.
justification. A couple of tackles remaining. New Zealand, with their | :48:48. | :48:58.
last play in the set, does Johnson roll it into the in-goal area? Yes, | :48:59. | :49:04.
he did. An element of confusion from England's defenders. I think England | :49:05. | :49:10.
may get a little decision. This might have been touched by a New | :49:11. | :49:16.
Zealand hand. Another wonderful kick from Shaun Johnson. As Harris got | :49:17. | :49:25.
his hand to that? -- has Harris got his hand to that? Good spot, | :49:26. | :49:37.
referee. A big call for the England side. Just relieve the pressure. New | :49:38. | :49:44.
Zealand were looking strong then. A sigh of relief from the England | :49:45. | :49:46.
coaches. Everything is coming through | :49:47. | :50:02.
Johnson. Leuluai has not stamped his authority on the match yet. All | :50:03. | :50:09.
three Burgess Brothers on the field at the moment. George being the | :50:10. | :50:13.
latest to join the clan. It is Tom who knocks on. That was a brilliant | :50:14. | :50:23.
hit. Taumalolo, what his hit. That is a brilliant hit. Powerful, isn't | :50:24. | :50:33.
he? Got underneath the ball. Burgess perhaps not opt to speed having come | :50:34. | :50:40.
off the bench. I would not fancy facing him on my own try line. He | :50:41. | :50:50.
had Graham and Burgess and he carried them ten yards. | :50:51. | :51:01.
I think we're going to see some off-loadss pretty quickly from New | :51:02. | :51:04.
Zealand. That is where they are most dangerous. They like to play | :51:05. | :51:09.
off-the-cuff. We have not seen that yet. Martin Taupau is on the field. | :51:10. | :51:19.
He has got a penalty. George Burgess holding him down a little too long, | :51:20. | :51:23.
the referee decided. Some consultation going on. I think Shaun | :51:24. | :51:27.
Johnson will kick for touch. Tohu Harris takes it forward. Issac | :51:28. | :51:47.
Luke has not had a stellar season. He started slowly. Improving as the | :51:48. | :51:51.
year went on. He had an injury towards the back end. We know that | :51:52. | :51:56.
in form he is devastating. He could find form in the Black of New | :51:57. | :52:01.
Zealand. Tom Lawlor has had a great year. -- Taumalolo. Luke has found a | :52:02. | :52:11.
number of England's defenders too keen to put him down. Leuluai lost | :52:12. | :52:20.
the ball. It was an England player who came and infringed. Just a | :52:21. | :52:27.
little bit lethargic from the Kiwis. We have noting that intensity from | :52:28. | :52:32.
them. We know they are dangerous. Issac Luke deciding to go for the | :52:33. | :52:42.
two points. They can't have much confidence in their penalty kicks. | :52:43. | :52:47.
They are building the pressure. They have had three penalties. All in | :52:48. | :52:55.
good areas. I think they are probably trying to find some | :52:56. | :52:59.
fluency. They have not had it with the ball in hand. Trying to get the | :53:00. | :53:13.
team to gel together. Jordan Kahu, another Brisbane player, another in | :53:14. | :53:17.
the New Zealand ranks who has been coached, or is being coached, by | :53:18. | :53:24.
Wayne Bennett. He had his break-out season last year. He has had an | :53:25. | :53:32.
excellent year the season past. 15 tries in 20 games for Brisbane | :53:33. | :53:38.
Broncos. Only his sixth Capita here for New Zealand. -- capped. The | :53:39. | :53:46.
England crowd tried to put him off but he was not going to let that | :53:47. | :53:50.
happen. New Zealand have dragged themselves back into it. New Zealand | :53:51. | :53:55.
will be quite happy with that. Certainly the way the first 30 | :53:56. | :53:59.
minutes has gone for England. They have looked dominant. They have not | :54:00. | :54:06.
been able to take advantage. New Zealand will be pretty happy just | :54:07. | :54:13.
two points behind after 30 minutes. That was just too long. A penalty | :54:14. | :54:18.
back for New Zealand on behalf of a line again. Not what England wanted. | :54:19. | :54:25.
We talk a lot about momentum in sport. England, when they had | :54:26. | :54:34.
momentum, did not score the try. Now the two points and they have kicked | :54:35. | :54:39.
straight out. Nightingale was ready and he would have caught that. He | :54:40. | :54:43.
didn't even have to do that. It was too long. This is a big set of six. | :54:44. | :54:51.
An unforced error gives New Zealand and opportunity. We will not stop | :54:52. | :54:59.
stressing today that this is a massive game in the context of the | :55:00. | :55:04.
tournament. New Zealand and Australia next week. England and | :55:05. | :55:08.
Australia the week after. Both these teams have to play Scotland. What | :55:09. | :55:12.
happens today could have a defining element to this Four Nations. Win | :55:13. | :55:19.
today and you have taken a massive strides towards the final. Kata will | :55:20. | :55:26.
claim it! Solomone Kata. He claims he got there first. Robert Hicks | :55:27. | :55:30.
will look for confirmation. He does not think he touched it down. We | :55:31. | :55:35.
have to go to the video referee once again. | :55:36. | :55:39.
Let's here from Dermot Sutton. He is onside. Solomone Kata is onside. Now | :55:40. | :55:50.
go through the grounding. Nice and slow, please. Coming into the | :55:51. | :55:58.
grounding. The ball still alive. Solomone Kata is in. We need to | :55:59. | :56:04.
determine whether it has been grounded by England and Italy. Is | :56:05. | :56:09.
there another angle? A right hand from England. That appears to have | :56:10. | :56:15.
downward pressure on the ball. Can we have another angle? Nice and | :56:16. | :56:22.
slow, just keep it moving. Past the point... Past the point. OK. Roll it | :56:23. | :56:28.
back a couple of frames. I will get you to pose this for me. And England | :56:29. | :56:38.
hand... If an England hand grounds it initially, it will be no try, | :56:39. | :56:45.
goal-line drop out. What about the fingertips of Jonny | :56:46. | :56:50.
Lomax? I have to say, that is brilliant play. For all the world I | :56:51. | :56:57.
thought the Kiwis were in. Brilliant play by Lomax. England survive. But | :56:58. | :57:06.
again they were dominating. New Zealand have worked themselves back | :57:07. | :57:11.
into this. They were never far away on the scoreboard. They were | :57:12. | :57:14.
distinct second best on the field. No New Zealand are getting a little | :57:15. | :57:20.
bit of confidence. When they start to offload, you know they are | :57:21. | :57:27.
growing in confidence. Trying to get a penalty there. It is not go to | :57:28. | :57:31.
happen. They are keeping it alive. Taumalolo | :57:32. | :57:48.
is a dangerous customer. Conflicted awake to Taupau. Still keeping it | :57:49. | :57:55.
alive. The intent was there. The England defender is just about doing | :57:56. | :57:59.
their job. Driven in by the big fellow, Taumalolo. Enough in numbers | :58:00. | :58:06.
to keep them wall of Mac. The door remains shot -- shut. But for how | :58:07. | :58:17.
long? Sarginson put it out of play. Another drop out underneath the | :58:18. | :58:23.
sticks. Just what the kick again. It curls back in play. It is a | :58:24. | :58:29.
brilliant skill, just to hit the ball on the outside of the foot, to | :58:30. | :58:35.
make it bend away. It gives your attacker is an opportunity to slide | :58:36. | :58:43.
in. I thought they picked the wrong side there. Johnson was on the other | :58:44. | :58:52.
side. Gareth Widdop scented New Zealand's away. Leuluai with the | :58:53. | :58:55.
catch. Adam Blair leading the charge back for New Zealand. Just the two | :58:56. | :59:03.
points in it. They have each had a try ruled out by the video referee. | :59:04. | :59:12.
Issac Luke running into the England's defenders. | :59:13. | :59:32.
Diving in goes Jordan Rapana. First try, first score for New Zealand at | :59:33. | :59:50.
his second Test match, 6-4 lead! New Zealand have been getting more and | :59:51. | :00:02.
more confident, and it was Leuluai, then the fabulous pass and Jordan | :00:03. | :00:11.
Rapana, sensational. Just watch. He comes across. The number four drawn | :00:12. | :00:19.
in. Beautiful pass. Dummy run was sensational by one of the second | :00:20. | :00:25.
rowers. Eye cannot see who that was. It was Proctor. And it was the speed | :00:26. | :00:34.
of Shaun Johnson. Just accelerated and making the defender commit. And | :00:35. | :00:44.
that is the high-end quality, the ability to deliver at crucial times | :00:45. | :00:50.
as the Kiwis have done here. How do England react to that, after the | :00:51. | :00:54.
domination of the opening 20 minutes? Could not quite convert? | :00:55. | :01:02.
And now finding themselves behind? Nothing in this. Just two point | :01:03. | :01:14.
game, at the most four. Again, to opportunities but just lost the | :01:15. | :01:23.
composure. That is the conversion attempt but he has missed the | :01:24. | :01:32.
target. Just to follow one, I think the important period for England as | :01:33. | :01:38.
we see Johnson, with the execution and the skill... Burgess boys coming | :01:39. | :01:53.
off the bench are just huge men and you want to swing momentum, but it | :01:54. | :01:58.
is sometimes since England have had the ball. Just a little too much | :01:59. | :02:05.
after that tackle was complete. You can see the territory and | :02:06. | :02:17.
possession. Swung now. It was 58, England. That happens with these | :02:18. | :02:25.
Test matches. That is the key. It is not about statistics, it is about | :02:26. | :02:31.
what you do when you have got it. Johnson, tap restart for New | :02:32. | :02:33.
Zealand. Well met by the Burgess clan, Tom | :02:34. | :02:55.
and George! England's defenders getting into his face. Mating deal, | :02:56. | :03:06.
so many spectacular tries from him in these New Zealand colours. -- | :03:07. | :03:08.
mating deal. Gets through. Shrugging off the | :03:09. | :03:24.
attempted tackle. Five away. Go right. Johnson with that kick. High | :03:25. | :03:32.
leap from Jordan Rapana. It was still juggling on. And the touch | :03:33. | :03:36.
judge... England knock on! Chaos. This was crucial. Big set for | :03:37. | :04:14.
England. Half to defend, be solid and aggressive. Just go in two | :04:15. | :04:18.
behind. New Zealand, and Johnson. Less than ten away. Five tackles for | :04:19. | :04:37.
England to survive and New Zealand to have a real go. Having something | :04:38. | :04:51.
to think his next act. Proctor comes in at some speed. England defenders | :04:52. | :04:57.
there in numbers. Enthusiasm, but needing more of that. Johnson, | :04:58. | :05:07.
diving interception! That was taken superbly by weighted. -- Whitehead. | :05:08. | :05:23.
Great line speed. What about that? Really good, just to put himself | :05:24. | :05:28.
between man and ball. England drank to build some amends. It is just | :05:29. | :05:37.
going to dribble out of play. And that puts New Zealand on the back | :05:38. | :05:43.
foot. But just 40 seconds of the half remaining. I am not sure even | :05:44. | :05:50.
if we will see the game restart. I think England got a good set there. | :05:51. | :05:58.
Backs against the wall for six, seven minutes. Opportunity to get | :05:59. | :06:02.
the ball back. You want to finish on your terms. A lot of talking going | :06:03. | :06:10.
on. It is as if England are trying to work out how the patient be | :06:11. | :06:14.
fitting together. -- they should. This is going to be the last play of | :06:15. | :06:27.
the half. New Zealand looking down the blindside. That is at. It is a | :06:28. | :06:35.
lot for grabs at half time. One try. Jordan Rapana. It was a flying | :06:36. | :06:44.
finish. And England have had chances, but have missed several | :06:45. | :06:47.
chances, so at half-time, 4-6. Did you feel your side grew into the | :06:48. | :07:06.
game? I think we started off sluggish. Give away a lot of | :07:07. | :07:13.
penalties but finished well. So little in this. What is going to be | :07:14. | :07:19.
key? Disciplined, if we can do that then it goes a long way to winning | :07:20. | :07:28.
the match. Thank you. We can take a look at the statistics after that | :07:29. | :07:34.
first 40 minutes at Huddersfield. Obviously, New Zealand a couple of | :07:35. | :07:42.
points up. Interestingly, if you go down to those penalties conceded, | :07:43. | :07:51.
after 20 minutes and was 4-2. England had conceded five penalties | :07:52. | :07:56.
at the back-end of that. Kevin and Robbie alongside me. And did England | :07:57. | :08:04.
lose some composure? I notice that but it is certainly still close. It | :08:05. | :08:13.
was split into two. Kiwis grown into it. As the game grew, they seemed to | :08:14. | :08:25.
keep rolling balls and behind, good opportunities. Very smart. You | :08:26. | :08:34.
feared for New Zealand. But from the moment you open your big bush, the | :08:35. | :08:38.
other way! It was the commentator cost. I am a Kiwi. But I have got to | :08:39. | :08:47.
be backing up what Kevin has said. It was a handover. Not capitalising | :08:48. | :08:57.
on the dominance so marching New Zealand up, struggling with the | :08:58. | :09:04.
footwork of Graham of Hill, possibly able to deal with the Burgess twins | :09:05. | :09:11.
because it was more direct. But having to move laterally, not easy. | :09:12. | :09:16.
Before we looked at the main points of that, when you are defending can | :09:17. | :09:22.
you give us an indication of what that does to you physically and | :09:23. | :09:31.
mentally? Physically, lungs bursting out the chest. It is easier to play | :09:32. | :09:38.
with the ball than without it. You are focusing, concentration | :09:39. | :09:42.
stretched. But physically, trying to control breathing. Get some air in! | :09:43. | :09:49.
It is really difficult. At this level, it is about pressure and | :09:50. | :09:55.
positioning. Towards the end of the half, New Zealand started to win | :09:56. | :09:59.
that battle. And I know when you are going to looked at the New Zealand | :10:00. | :10:05.
try, one of the most important parts is the momentum, to scoring this? | :10:06. | :10:09.
That is correct. Kevin touched on that. New Zealand made this a | :10:10. | :10:21.
cracker. Doing it on the right-hand side but also the left-hand side. | :10:22. | :10:29.
Created space out wide. Gareth Widdop has to deal with Proctor, | :10:30. | :10:38.
ends up three on one. Jordan Rapana has been scoring like that all | :10:39. | :10:45.
season long. Athleticism. But it is the Shaun Johnson factor. It makes | :10:46. | :10:56.
some of the players nervous. On the back of two kicks to the goal, | :10:57. | :11:05.
Sarginson not needing to comment but when you're fatigued you can make | :11:06. | :11:11.
those decisions. I thought England defended really well. You think of | :11:12. | :11:15.
the opportunities that we sat, it could have been a different | :11:16. | :11:23.
scoreline. But some smart play Ron Johnson. One opportunity for New | :11:24. | :11:28.
Zealand. And England had chances? Yes. I think this was Gareth Widdop. | :11:29. | :11:34.
It was great vision. He has had a good game so far. Callum just misses | :11:35. | :11:44.
it unfortunately. That could have put us six in front. And another | :11:45. | :11:51.
one. You can see Jonny Lomax. Just looking disjointed. What happens | :11:52. | :12:01.
next? Stray pass. We have gone from having pressure, the stretching New | :12:02. | :12:07.
Zealand, nothing kick. Making the best of that but we should be | :12:08. | :12:11.
getting more. When you are in this situation, looking disjointed, whose | :12:12. | :12:17.
responsibility is it to connect things up again? That was just one | :12:18. | :12:31.
opportunity, we have just seen Sarginson, but that was one play we | :12:32. | :12:41.
looked disjointed. Catch the other. Free play. Got the ball back. We had | :12:42. | :12:49.
to throw that one. Just short. Couple of times that we went to the | :12:50. | :12:54.
video referee. The James Graham one. Explain why this was not given. | :12:55. | :12:58.
James Graham has got the ball, contact with the ground but his | :12:59. | :13:05.
right elbow touches the ground. No try. Extends that untraced to go | :13:06. | :13:16.
over, no try. He sneaks through the gap. And his ilk will takes to the | :13:17. | :13:25.
ground. Turns over. Double movement. It is worth pointing out the quality | :13:26. | :13:34.
of that pass. Skips three defenders. James Graham, world-class passer. | :13:35. | :13:44.
And it changed for England when James Graham and Chris Hill went | :13:45. | :13:51.
off, that is no comment on the Burgess brothers on but shows how | :13:52. | :13:53.
difficult it is to get these interchanges correct? When we talked | :13:54. | :14:00.
about the footwork, James Graham and Hill stretched the defence. When you | :14:01. | :14:08.
are playing direct, it is died. And the introduction of Daryl Clark, I | :14:09. | :14:18.
just thought how dynamic years. I have got to agree with that. When | :14:19. | :14:24.
England were going between the 20 minutes and supplements, New Zealand | :14:25. | :14:28.
starting to struggle with energy, that introduction of Daryl Clark was | :14:29. | :14:37.
just potentially going to create some try scoring opportunities. | :14:38. | :14:41.
England are not far away. We are talking about passes, just | :14:42. | :14:49.
centimetres behind. We can take a look at Jonny Lomax. How impressed | :14:50. | :14:55.
I've been with him so far? And he saved this try? I think the sign of | :14:56. | :15:03.
a good full-back is when you are on your own wine. He has been fantastic | :15:04. | :15:13.
year. Correct position. Saved tries, moving people into position. And | :15:14. | :15:25.
this is world-class. To come up with plays like this wins you matches. | :15:26. | :15:29.
4-6. We have passed up some opportunities but we have defended | :15:30. | :15:37.
well. This is here for us to win. And from the New Zealand point of | :15:38. | :15:40.
view, probably the ten minute stretch when we were comfortable but | :15:41. | :15:43.
as Jesse Bromwich said you have got to keep the discipline. We have had | :15:44. | :15:57.
one of the cameras on Sam Burgess, the new England captain. We will get | :15:58. | :16:03.
the thoughts on Robbie and Kevin on how he did. Following the national | :16:04. | :16:10.
anthem. Everything that Sam Burgess does, it is a battle. He does not | :16:11. | :16:16.
give up. And he has got the tools to do it more exceptionally than other | :16:17. | :16:20.
people. The opening 20 minutes, he was trying to impress. Big squad. | :16:21. | :16:33.
That is why he was appointed captain. That is what Wayne Bennett | :16:34. | :16:40.
ones. That lifts the team. And it also lifts the crowd. You need some | :16:41. | :16:49.
of these big hits to get everybody going. It is a full house at | :16:50. | :16:54.
Huddersfield. It should be bouncing. This is the way that he pleases | :16:55. | :16:58.
Rugby League. We love him and we want to encourage him to do that. I | :16:59. | :17:02.
am not saying that he should be crunching New Zealand players, but | :17:03. | :17:10.
the more that he does that, the more it gets people of seats. I think the | :17:11. | :17:17.
atmosphere is pretty tense. It will have seen the missed opportunities. | :17:18. | :17:22.
Just wondering, is this going to be a rugby today? Take the | :17:23. | :17:27.
opportunities and we will win this Test match. That tension, highlights | :17:28. | :17:32.
just how important this is for both of the sides when they have still | :17:33. | :17:38.
got to play Australia. This, in essence, is not fit for who is going | :17:39. | :17:44.
to meet Australia in the final. Both of these would be does Julia, no | :17:45. | :17:54.
problem. -- sides would beat Australia. We can go down to the | :17:55. | :18:02.
touchline. This man, stood there, was expected to be on a road trip in | :18:03. | :18:07.
America. What is it like to have become part of this team? It has | :18:08. | :18:14.
been a roller-coaster selection. To play four games. And then coming to | :18:15. | :18:19.
the setup like this, just elated and so proud to be involved. After such | :18:20. | :18:27.
a crazy year. I am just so happy and I waited. What has it been like | :18:28. | :18:34.
working under Wayne Bennett? He just brings that steely determination, | :18:35. | :18:41.
the guys know that he wants extra effort, extra training and you need | :18:42. | :18:46.
the resilience to be on this team. I think that we have seen that. I am | :18:47. | :18:51.
delighted to be part of it. I am just trying to learn and grow from | :18:52. | :19:02.
others. As you said, you just had four games from the end of last | :19:03. | :19:07.
year, how difficult has that been? It has been an absolutely crazy | :19:08. | :19:10.
year. The massive build-up to getting back and then you get clean, | :19:11. | :19:18.
I thought every time the off-season sorted. But obviously that decision | :19:19. | :19:24.
to make. Go to America, or come to the camp. And if I went to America | :19:25. | :19:33.
it would have been what if? So I am doing whatever I can to get into the | :19:34. | :19:39.
side. You made the decision to talk about the depression, the | :19:40. | :19:42.
difficulties you have had, what sort of reaction have you had? I have | :19:43. | :19:48.
noticed a lot of people talking about it and a lot of people are | :19:49. | :19:53.
starting to open up. It is not just a silent thing that people go | :19:54. | :19:57.
through. Casually, people just start to talk about this around changing | :19:58. | :20:06.
rooms, Leeds Rhinos, that is the thing we are trying to broach. It is | :20:07. | :20:12.
something that we need to start doing. Fingers crossed you get to | :20:13. | :20:21.
put that jersey on. Good interview. We can point you in the direction of | :20:22. | :20:24.
some stuff coming your way. That is next Saturday. But we can go | :20:25. | :21:56.
back to the second half. We looking forward to that double-header at | :21:57. | :22:01.
Coventry next week. First ever international between England and | :22:02. | :22:07.
Scotland at senior level. But we have got things to sort out there | :22:08. | :22:13.
first. England have got so many good things to look back on. Certainly | :22:14. | :22:18.
with the ball in hand. But finding themselves behind at half-time. | :22:19. | :22:27.
Witnessing Wayne Bennett talking to his players, we can only | :22:28. | :22:30.
second-guess what he has said. What sort of messages do you think? I | :22:31. | :22:38.
think Kevin got that spot on at half-time, defensively doing so well | :22:39. | :22:40.
but we just need to take opportunities. I am just looking | :22:41. | :22:47.
forward to seeing Daryl Clark come off the bench. I think he is going | :22:48. | :22:54.
to abandon plans. -- have a big influence. I remember his debut, two | :22:55. | :23:05.
years ago. Absolutely lightning on the field. It is intercepted. This | :23:06. | :23:15.
man is going to take some stopping. Johnson has got away. Not even going | :23:16. | :23:19.
to get close. Heartbreaker. English heartbreaker. He has just done | :23:20. | :23:24.
something again that has caused England some misery. Enter section | :23:25. | :23:35.
try. What was Wayne Bennett saying? Composure and be clinical. Got the | :23:36. | :23:38.
opportunity, had numbers on the left-hand side but this man read it | :23:39. | :23:45.
perfectly. 75 yards. What a blow for England. You can see that. Had the | :23:46. | :23:53.
ball back. That is the past. Look at the numbers on the left-hand side. | :23:54. | :24:01.
Clear. It was forced. Didn't need to throw it. Away. And if you're going | :24:02. | :24:07.
to be critical, perhaps he should just have carried that a little bit | :24:08. | :24:12.
more, but Lee Johnson the opportunity to sit on his heels. And | :24:13. | :24:19.
when he took that, no other outcome. Four defenders chasing him at | :24:20. | :24:24.
absolutely no chance with his speed. That is a blow. Box office. Absolute | :24:25. | :24:40.
box office. We love to hate him! Just moments of magic, they can be | :24:41. | :24:43.
quiet but you know that he is going to have some Mormons. Big players, | :24:44. | :24:51.
big games. We remember him from that World Cup semifinal but also the | :24:52. | :24:55.
four Nations at Wellington, Man of the Match. Brilliant. Just got it | :24:56. | :24:58.
all. Does that successfully. Significant | :24:59. | :25:16.
moment. Because New Zealand have a little bit of attrition. -- cushion. | :25:17. | :25:30.
Two score lead. As soon as he took that, you love to hate him, when you | :25:31. | :25:34.
coach against them you just know that he is going to have Mormons. He | :25:35. | :25:39.
gives him that eyes, and then off he went. It is some way back in for | :25:40. | :25:47.
England. Ball has been lost! Not stolen. | :25:48. | :26:07.
Penalty for England. They needed that. England needed some position. | :26:08. | :26:21.
Eight down. Have to score twice. Going to have to build some | :26:22. | :26:25.
pressure. Good opportunity. Just what they wanted. Another one. The | :26:26. | :26:41.
England band striking up at the moment. It is very full but flat, | :26:42. | :26:52.
the John Smith's Stadium. You think about some of the kicks. Just | :26:53. | :26:57.
building pressure and we need to see some of that from England. Take some | :26:58. | :27:00.
energy out of the team. Not exactly joining the dots at the | :27:01. | :27:22.
moment. Toppled. Off-loads to big bro Sam. | :27:23. | :27:53.
The final play, next. Very good ball there! Kiwi hand! That is what we're | :27:54. | :28:04.
talking about, the importance of building against the Kiwis, you | :28:05. | :28:09.
cannot underestimate that because you have got to take the energy out | :28:10. | :28:16.
of them. And Josh Hodgson has just done exactly the same. Giving his | :28:17. | :28:21.
team an opportunity to build some pressure. | :28:22. | :28:31.
I think it is going to be interesting to see when he brings | :28:32. | :28:42.
Hill and Graham back on. As Daryl Clark could come on on the back of | :28:43. | :28:46.
that. Need some in the morning for the foregoing -- need some momentum | :28:47. | :29:01.
for going forward. It is a penalty. Penalty. I would definitely take | :29:02. | :29:13.
two. Plenty of time left. Need to score twice. Easy to points. I agree | :29:14. | :29:15.
totally. Going to take the tap. They want the six. George Burgess, a | :29:16. | :29:26.
wrecking machine, as he runs it in. Gareth Widdop trying to create some | :29:27. | :29:49.
space. Whitehead Wade said dummy half. -- waits at dummy half. That | :29:50. | :30:05.
was very slow. Tom Burgess! Whitehead came with pace and power. | :30:06. | :30:09.
The Kiwis matched him physically and put him down. Lomax brings it on. | :30:10. | :30:22.
Not a lot of options for him. Whitehead allowed Wyatt! McGillvary | :30:23. | :30:35.
will score! And Jermaine McGillvary, the hometown boy, is a hometown | :30:36. | :30:43.
hero! Made in Huddersfield, scored in Huddersfield. England are back in | :30:44. | :30:51.
the contest in Huddersfield. It was brilliant play from the whole | :30:52. | :30:55.
England side. Really testing New Zealand. They got some off-loads in | :30:56. | :31:00.
the play. Starting to do to New Zealand what they like to do to you. | :31:01. | :31:05.
When Lomax got the opportunity to get the ball in his hand, he did. | :31:06. | :31:11.
Big Sam trying to get the off-load away. Beautiful pass from Whitehead. | :31:12. | :31:25.
He juggled it slightly, McGillvary. Exactly what England needed. Gale | :31:26. | :31:31.
engages the defence. Whitehead with the decision to make. 32. Perfect | :31:32. | :31:41.
skill. Great try. Nightingale was ball watching. Just went off it. | :31:42. | :31:47.
Great decision not to take the two points! Widdop has got the accuracy. | :31:48. | :32:02.
It is game on again. 12-10. Jermaine McGillvary, the man of the moment. | :32:03. | :32:09.
This is the end product. Gale to Whitehead. Beautiful pass. That | :32:10. | :32:13.
probably came from the repeat set that Hodgson got, killed the | :32:14. | :32:18.
pressure, make New Zealand defender. When they have to defend they do not | :32:19. | :32:25.
look half as good. Jermaine McGillvary's grandmother is here | :32:26. | :32:31.
today. Only the third time she has watched him. He grew open with his | :32:32. | :32:38.
grandmother and used to sleep four in a bed. Imagine sleeping with that | :32:39. | :32:43.
monster! He was given a great upbringing. I'm sure his grandma is | :32:44. | :32:47.
proud as punch, wherever she is inside the ground. | :32:48. | :33:02.
England getting a bit of a roll on. The one thing I have to be critical | :33:03. | :33:10.
of, the passing has not been as crisp as it should be. Some of the | :33:11. | :33:14.
movement, you have to put in front of the play. They are checking their | :33:15. | :33:18.
play and taking the pace out of the movement. | :33:19. | :33:37.
There was a shoulder that came at Kahu from Lomax. It certainly found | :33:38. | :33:44.
its mark. His ribs might be bruised a little. New Zealand have lost | :33:45. | :33:53.
their shape. Gone into their shell. England have got the width in the | :33:54. | :33:56.
attack. Looking dangerous again. That is what we want to see. England | :33:57. | :34:04.
have been dominant in the second half. All New Zealand have had is | :34:05. | :34:08.
one interception. They have to keep on going. Five tackles. The last for | :34:09. | :34:18.
New Zealand. 40 metres away. They rush at Johnson. McGillvary catches | :34:19. | :34:24.
it safely. He wins more penalties than anyone else. He is so difficult | :34:25. | :34:28.
to put down. By the way, there is a World Cup | :34:29. | :34:46.
qualifying game going on at the moment in Monza, of all places. | :34:47. | :34:54.
Half-time, 14-10 for Italy against Wales. Webber wins that is | :34:55. | :34:58.
guaranteed a place in the world Cup next year. Whoever loses, gets a | :34:59. | :35:00.
second chance in the play-off. A clean take from Rapana. He found | :35:01. | :35:20.
some space to clear as well. Superb play from Rapana. Big coal from the | :35:21. | :35:30.
referee. Leuluai is going off. A massive loss for the Kiwis. It looks | :35:31. | :35:37.
like a head injury. I think he got his head on the wrong side. Tommy | :35:38. | :35:44.
Leuluai went down in back play and immediately said it was concussion. | :35:45. | :35:50.
He got up and went back into play. He didn't want to come off. They | :35:51. | :35:54.
brought him off for a concussion check. You get 15 minutes, don't | :35:55. | :36:04.
you? Once he is cleared, he will be able to come back on. He will have | :36:05. | :36:10.
an impact in this game, I'm sure. No surprise that Clark is on the field. | :36:11. | :36:15.
But how surprised you that Hodgson is gone off? It looks like a | :36:16. | :36:22.
like-for-like sales. -- swap. It is a different dynamic with Clark. He | :36:23. | :36:29.
is very direct. He is probably thinking that New Zealand look | :36:30. | :36:30.
slightly tired. Taken on again by Bromwich. He gets | :36:31. | :36:47.
the off-load away. Proctor going no further. They are down an option in | :36:48. | :36:55.
terms of kicker because Leuluai is off the field. Good play by Shaun | :36:56. | :37:05.
Johnson. The ball was right around his ankles and he just scooped it | :37:06. | :37:09.
off the floor. Immaculate skill. Perfect weight. Shaun Johnson is | :37:10. | :37:20.
building in confidence as this game goes on. A couple of interchange is | :37:21. | :37:30.
being made by England. Tom Burgess is going off. Not sure who the other | :37:31. | :37:40.
player going off is. The kick is good. | :37:41. | :37:51.
Sam has had every minute so far. He is taking a breather. We will see | :37:52. | :38:05.
him back. It is unusual that Sam Burgess is on the field and England | :38:06. | :38:10.
are losing. That was never the case in rugby union. There were always | :38:11. | :38:17.
winning when he was on the field. -- they were always winning. | :38:18. | :38:26.
Last play. Lewis Brown... Johnson again. Another kick. McGilvray is | :38:27. | :38:37.
across! A massive hit. I think they will be looking at a possible | :38:38. | :38:42.
shoulder charge. As big as that was, it might have been illegal. It is | :38:43. | :38:50.
very difficult. You do everything you are capable of doing to knock | :38:51. | :38:54.
him over the touchline. He has done terrifically well. | :38:55. | :39:06.
We need to go back a little further. We know he has stepped on the line | :39:07. | :39:11.
before he has passed. We need to make sure that everyone is onside | :39:12. | :39:16.
initially. Definitely no try. We are just looking for the restart. All | :39:17. | :39:23.
play onto this point. Then we need to clear a shoulder charge. Whether | :39:24. | :39:29.
there is a shoulder charge from the England player. Can we have the | :39:30. | :39:35.
front on angle again? I am going to see whether the Army is tucked into | :39:36. | :39:40.
the body contact. No, that is just a collision. Note shoulder charge. No | :39:41. | :39:47.
try. New Zealand have taken the ball into touch. | :39:48. | :39:52.
Everybody has had eyes on the big screen inside the ground. They have | :39:53. | :39:56.
guessed what the decision is going to be. It is no try and note | :39:57. | :40:01.
shoulder charge. Well done McGillvary. Excellent. The | :40:02. | :40:07.
temptation for him was to sing again on Shaun Johnson. He held himself | :40:08. | :40:12.
square and deal with the danger exceptionally well. Did even | :40:13. | :40:16.
remarkably better not to shoulder charge. The temptation was massive. | :40:17. | :40:23.
And a readjustment from the ricochet off the kick as well. He did | :40:24. | :40:33.
remarkably well. Cooper carried it strongly. What a last few years he | :40:34. | :40:39.
has had, Mike Cooper. Back at Warrington next year. | :40:40. | :40:54.
England on the halfway line. Widdop putted high. Gale got knocked over. | :40:55. | :41:13.
They need a little bit more in the last tackle. Put it in between a | :41:14. | :41:19.
winger and full-back, make them move for it. 25 minutes remaining. Two | :41:20. | :41:28.
points in the game. Lots of talking points. There is a good flowed. Here | :41:29. | :41:35.
comes Rapana. Lomax cannot make the tackle. McGillvary cannot either. It | :41:36. | :41:44.
is a second try for Jordan Rapana! New Zealand find a way through | :41:45. | :41:50.
again. And again, England just switch off at crucial times. There | :41:51. | :41:54.
was nothing on there. The defence very well organised. Just watch. | :41:55. | :42:03.
They switch off. Lomax has got to make that tackle. That is a very, | :42:04. | :42:12.
very simple try. What New Zealand have got is absolute raw speed. | :42:13. | :42:18.
Rapana has been sensational. To take that opportunity, accelerate away | :42:19. | :42:23.
from Lomax, who is no slouch, three or four England defenders chasing | :42:24. | :42:31.
him, the speed they have got in this team is probably the difference | :42:32. | :42:35.
between these teams. The danger of the off-load. They have to close the | :42:36. | :42:41.
off-load down. Do not allow him -- don't allow them to get it. When | :42:42. | :42:46.
they do, they are side altogether. Lomax will be disappointed. | :42:47. | :42:55.
Denis Betts sitting to the side of Wayne Bennett. Paul Scofield as | :42:56. | :42:56.
well. Great minds up. -- up there. Jordan Kahu with a chance to give | :42:57. | :43:20.
his side a two score lead again. Six point is the difference. England | :43:21. | :43:23.
have to score twice to get anything out of the game. There is an anxious | :43:24. | :43:33.
bows around the stadium. Full house. The vast majority are England fans. | :43:34. | :43:38.
You can feel the frustration. Here comes Kahu. New Zealand in the box | :43:39. | :43:49.
seat at the moment. He has hit the post and put it wide. And that might | :43:50. | :43:59.
yet prove very, very crucial. Goal kicks will win you games and win new | :44:00. | :44:03.
test matches. We spoke about a game of inches. That was literally | :44:04. | :44:08.
inches. Two inches to the right and it is through the middle. There is | :44:09. | :44:15.
the off-load. Great support. Very good finish by Rapana. Jesse | :44:16. | :44:25.
Bromwich leading out. England with time beginning to take away. 22 | :44:26. | :44:33.
minutes, just over, left to play. England needing to score once and | :44:34. | :44:37.
convert to get the draw. Twice to win it. New Zealand very much in the | :44:38. | :44:40.
driving seat as it stands. Lewis Brown has made an impact since | :44:41. | :44:55.
coming on. Such a fantastic utility player. Plays for manly these days. | :44:56. | :45:03.
England get the ball back. That is an important miss kick from New | :45:04. | :45:08.
Zealand. It allows England not to panic. Not to get frustrated. They | :45:09. | :45:14.
are only behind by one score. They have to wait for their opportunity. | :45:15. | :45:18.
They both get one. Then it is down to their execution. Just calm and | :45:19. | :45:21.
composed in this period. Lomax overstepped there. Grabbed the | :45:22. | :45:42.
game by the scruff of the neck now. -- they need to grab the game. Sam | :45:43. | :45:50.
Burgess keeping warm on the bike. England get the penalty. Hanging on | :45:51. | :45:56.
too long. Despite Kevin Proctor's protestations. This is where your | :45:57. | :46:00.
preparation comes in. These type of positions. Just put a planned move | :46:01. | :46:03.
on here. , Lolo and Graham coming | :46:04. | :46:19.
head-to-head. Two big fellows. --, Lolo. | :46:20. | :46:36.
Clark looking for the past. Doesn't want to throw the ball away. Over | :46:37. | :46:53.
the top! Holsclaw is the try! Ryan Hall scores the try. How many times | :46:54. | :47:00.
has he done that for England? -- Hall scores the try. 29 times in his | :47:01. | :47:06.
29th appearance. You cannot stop him from that range. It is about | :47:07. | :47:14.
execution, isn't it? You don't want the ball to go to anybody else in an | :47:15. | :47:19.
England shirt except Ryan Hall. Lovely slick hands. It was Gale who | :47:20. | :47:28.
went wide. Widdop was speculative. What a brilliant finish. Big left | :47:29. | :47:36.
hand reached out. Superb from Hall. The scrambling defence of New | :47:37. | :47:40.
Zealand's desperate to get there. His execution was immaculate. | :47:41. | :47:46.
Superb. Widdop was brilliant. If he catches that, he is nailed. That is | :47:47. | :47:51.
a brilliant finish. He is such a big, big man to try to force of the | :47:52. | :47:57.
touchline. Great finish. He makes it look easy. That is so difficult to | :47:58. | :48:03.
do. There are so many wingers who would not have scored that try. He | :48:04. | :48:10.
leans inside away from the touchline. A big kick. Widdop has | :48:11. | :48:17.
got the weight of Four Nations on his shoulders. And he has kicked it | :48:18. | :48:23.
from the touchline! It is all square. 16 points apiece. We are | :48:24. | :48:32.
going to be testing the edges of our seats because we have got quite a | :48:33. | :48:38.
finish. You said the convergence could be crucial and that was a | :48:39. | :48:42.
conversion he should have put over, Kahu for Australia. -- New Zealand. | :48:43. | :48:49.
The momentum swing goes in your favour. He brings big Sam Burgess | :48:50. | :48:53.
back onto the field, his captain, his leader, and a man who can drive | :48:54. | :48:57.
his team home in the last 20 minutes. I think John Bateman is | :48:58. | :49:04.
off. He has pushed him into the back row. Not a bad replacement in the | :49:05. | :49:11.
back row, Sam Burgess. Ryan Hall has not had the best of seasons at | :49:12. | :49:17.
Leeds. But boy, he can still do it when it matters. There was almost a | :49:18. | :49:21.
sense of inevitability when the ball came to him that he was going to | :49:22. | :49:25.
score. It remains all square. There is still a match to be won or lost | :49:26. | :49:30.
here, with 18 minutes remaining. Sam Burgess... The Kiwis on their | :49:31. | :49:57.
backsidess. -- backsides. Kahu took that well. Great set by England and | :49:58. | :50:05.
a good finish where Kahu had to make the catch. Superb. Daryl Clark is | :50:06. | :50:18.
looking menacing. Rapana is hard. -- hurt. England players straightaway | :50:19. | :50:28.
saying there is a problem. What happened here? You can tell how | :50:29. | :50:39.
serious it is by the reaction of the players. Straightaway they hold | :50:40. | :50:45.
their hands up. Is there a problem with Hill and his connection? It is | :50:46. | :50:51.
about not putting pressure to the top of the head. They call it the | :50:52. | :50:55.
crusher tackle in rugby league. Whether that was the case there, I'm | :50:56. | :51:01.
not so sure. I don't think it was intentional. It is very difficult. | :51:02. | :51:11.
He did not have him in a hold. He fell on top. He is OK. That's the | :51:12. | :51:22.
main thing. Kahu with a step. Graham lunges. Broken play. Johnson is at | :51:23. | :51:33.
his most dangerous here. A posse of white shirted England players | :51:34. | :51:39.
waiting to make the tackle. 17 minutes remaining. New Zealand | :51:40. | :51:46.
pressing. Taken well by, Lolo. -- Taumalolo. Johnson got the kick in. | :51:47. | :52:03.
McGilvray puts it dead. How good is Shaun Johnson? He Times Up on the | :52:04. | :52:06.
right-hand side of the field teasing the England defenders and then he | :52:07. | :52:12.
picks it off his boots again. The composer he shows just to put it | :52:13. | :52:18.
down. He is a genius. They have to play it. Every kick apart from one | :52:19. | :52:30.
they have to play it. They are a joy to watch. England have got to stay | :52:31. | :52:36.
focused. You would pay your admission alone just to see that | :52:37. | :52:45.
man. Was their offside? No. No contact. Bromwich runs it back | :52:46. | :52:53.
again. A big set. The repeat sets have been in New Zealand's favour. | :52:54. | :53:04.
15-10. That is a massive number. Three tackles to go. Everything goes | :53:05. | :53:14.
through Johnson. Taumalolo is very powerful. That was advertised, | :53:15. | :53:26.
wasn't it? The England defenders knew it was coming. That is one less | :53:27. | :53:32.
play. Johnson with a drop goal. He has put it over. It is confirmed. | :53:33. | :53:39.
Shaun Johnson with a one point. New Zealand now lead by 17-16. The mark | :53:40. | :53:44.
of a player is the control they have got on a team. I don't think anybody | :53:45. | :53:49.
thought that Shaun Johnson would take one point. He is doing this | :53:50. | :53:56.
without Tommy Leuluai. When you lose that partner, there is so much | :53:57. | :54:00.
pressure on you as a player. He has just stepped up and taken control. | :54:01. | :54:06.
There was nothing else on. The pass was poor. Might as well take the one | :54:07. | :54:12.
point. They will have the ball back and try to end up in the England 20 | :54:13. | :54:14.
metre area. Just over 24,000 people in here | :54:15. | :54:53.
today. A sell-out crowd. England get the ball back. A long way to go. A | :54:54. | :55:02.
long way to go. Again, the composer. 12 kicks today Fridjonsson. He is | :55:03. | :55:11.
the only kicker. -- 12 kicks today for Johnson. Having a kicker gives | :55:12. | :55:21.
you a bit of variety. This guy makes space for himself. It's always | :55:22. | :55:27.
better to have the option. When he is kicking so well... Great players | :55:28. | :55:33.
just have an influence on a game. If you look at the 34 players on show | :55:34. | :55:38.
this afternoon, he is probably the one with the most influence on this | :55:39. | :55:45.
game. With 14 minutes to go, hopefully someone will come up with | :55:46. | :55:53.
a bit of magic. You wish they were not just playing each other the ones | :55:54. | :55:58.
for the right to play in the final. So much quality out of there and | :55:59. | :56:02.
questions left unanswered at the end of this. It's almost a knockout tie. | :56:03. | :56:11.
Not quite. But almost. England very much still alive in the Four Nations | :56:12. | :56:17.
if they lose, but if they win, it would make such a difference to | :56:18. | :56:21.
their campaign. It does to New Zealand as well, of course. | :56:22. | :56:36.
They timed it to perfection. You cannot hit came in the air. As soon | :56:37. | :56:43.
as the feet hit the ground, fair game. Nightingale did well to take | :56:44. | :56:51.
it in the air. You are right, they timed to perfection. I thought | :56:52. | :56:54.
England lost their shape a little bit in that set. Immaculately timed. | :56:55. | :57:06.
Issac Luke has to clear some pressure with that kick. Jermaine | :57:07. | :57:15.
McGillvary picks out Johnson. Johnson grimly hangs on. Hall with a | :57:16. | :57:23.
little gap. The big forwards are tiring a little. Two gone. England | :57:24. | :57:38.
to the halfway line. Sam Burgess. Quick hands. The New Zealand defence | :57:39. | :57:51.
at sixes and sevens. Number two -- Two tackles remaining. | :57:52. | :58:04.
Hall goes down the blindside. Lucky for him they can keep it alive. Kahu | :58:05. | :58:22.
does exceptionally well. He had to. He had to bury himself into the | :58:23. | :58:26.
ground so he did not get picked off and carried over his try line. The | :58:27. | :58:35.
momentum is with England. The intensity they have put into the | :58:36. | :58:42.
defensive line. Keep their discipline, make them kick from that | :58:43. | :58:49.
20 metre area. Four tackles gun. That is five if he doesn't float, | :58:50. | :59:01.
which it doesn't. -- off-loaded. Good result. That was a good result | :59:02. | :59:07.
for England. These are opportunities in games that you get every now and | :59:08. | :59:11.
again. You have to take these opportunities. If England scored | :59:12. | :59:15.
here, they are certainly on the front foot. What price a penalty in | :59:16. | :59:24.
this next set? That is where you missed Tommy Leuluai. He would have | :59:25. | :59:32.
allowed Johnson that pressure free kick. England have reaped the | :59:33. | :59:36.
benefit. Tommy Leuluai on the sideline. An experienced full-back | :59:37. | :59:41.
should have said, you are on the wrong side, give me the ball and I | :59:42. | :59:45.
will help you out. But Johnson has just done everything on his own | :59:46. | :59:47.
today. Great opportunity for England. | :59:48. | :59:55.
a kind and we have been in these circumstances before, the World Cup | :59:56. | :00:02.
semifinal at Wembley. Three years ago. You have got to believe that | :00:03. | :00:16.
you can win these games. Four gone. Two to go. England supporters baying | :00:17. | :00:31.
for a penalty. Sarginson drop that. That was a chance. You could see the | :00:32. | :00:37.
Kiwis, are the world up had created the opportunity for Sarginson. He | :00:38. | :00:46.
has got a good chance. That is an opportunity. Just to take this game | :00:47. | :00:57.
away from New Zealand. Not managed to take it. He has been | :00:58. | :01:06.
disappointed. Just turned inside. Put into a hole. You do not get many | :01:07. | :01:13.
of them at the international game. You have just got to take that one | :01:14. | :01:15.
opportunity. Both England centres, just one | :01:16. | :01:33.
desperately unlucky fumble from scoring today. | :01:34. | :02:01.
Ryan Hall wants it back. Wrestled to the ground. Talk about getting your | :02:02. | :02:15.
team on the front foot, certainly done that this afternoon. | :02:16. | :02:29.
England fans chanting The Great Escape at the moment. | :02:30. | :02:56.
Just a little bit too far. Could not challenge. Desperately trying to | :02:57. | :03:05.
recover. But giving New Zealand the opportunity to get the ball lobby. | :03:06. | :03:11.
If England lose today, they will have to defeat Scotland and | :03:12. | :03:21.
Australia. They would. They would beat both of them, to make the | :03:22. | :03:31.
final. And Johnson goes to the left-hand side. Created by the | :03:32. | :03:47.
off-load. In, bump, turn. And if he gets that ball out... Jordan Rapana | :03:48. | :03:54.
gets away. United expect him to execute that. We'll England get | :03:55. | :04:09.
another opportunity? Wales are 16-14 up. Six minutes to go. And England | :04:10. | :04:22.
are running out of time and chances. New Zealand hanging on. That is all | :04:23. | :04:32.
that they have got to do. Kicking range. This would have to be good. | :04:33. | :04:46.
Couple of tackles to go. Ref says play on. Using the energy. The New | :04:47. | :04:57.
Zealand line has to re-establish itself quickly. Sam Burgess, ball is | :04:58. | :05:10.
lost. It was a forward pass. Just trying too hard. You have got to do | :05:11. | :05:15.
the easy, simple things. No need for that. Just sucking defenders. That | :05:16. | :05:28.
is the anxiety, being behind on the scoreboard. And it is absolutely | :05:29. | :05:40.
bang on. Because you just get anxious and make mistakes you | :05:41. | :05:49.
probably would not make otherwise. At the very least, New Zealand are | :05:50. | :05:57.
going to get a good kick at the end of this set. Advantageous position. | :05:58. | :06:03.
Still some time left for England. Some questions being asked. But Hall | :06:04. | :06:28.
captures that. 99 yards to go, four minutes left. England need to do | :06:29. | :06:35.
something sharpish. Jonny Lomax, down the middle. Good recovery. But | :06:36. | :06:49.
they have got some numbers. New Zealand defender was all over him. | :06:50. | :07:03.
Five tackles gone. Where do England go? Gareth Widdop for the drop goal | :07:04. | :07:17.
attempt. Wide. I thought that was the correct decision to go for that. | :07:18. | :07:26.
Just tantalised. Drifting to the left-hand side of the post. New | :07:27. | :07:34.
Zealand looking exceptionally tired. Going to have another opportunity. | :07:35. | :07:43.
One more set of six. Three to go. New Zealand will probably get to the | :07:44. | :07:51.
sideline with this. Just incredible. You can see why he has got the most | :07:52. | :07:57.
yardage in the NRL. So powerful. Brick feet. | :07:58. | :08:10.
Two left in the set. New Zealand looking to finish strongly. Here it | :08:11. | :08:31.
comes. Johnson going to the touchline. Just seeing the clock | :08:32. | :08:40.
out. He has got so much time. It is ridiculous. It is so difficult to | :08:41. | :08:48.
put the pressure on the half back. He knows exactly how to create | :08:49. | :08:54.
space. Natural and makes time for himself. He has just been the | :08:55. | :09:01.
standard for me today. We are going to see possibly six more tackles | :09:02. | :09:09.
from England, to try to get a good start at the four Nations. This is | :09:10. | :09:17.
it. England was Mike last throw of the dice... You would suspect. That | :09:18. | :09:24.
is the first. Sam Burgess. Tiring now. Both of the players. Sam | :09:25. | :09:32.
Burgess has given that way. And that could just be the game. Issac Luke | :09:33. | :09:45.
is hur. -- hurt. That is game over. 90 seconds to go. Sam Burgess, the | :09:46. | :09:53.
opportunity to forward but Issac Luke knew exactly what was trying to | :09:54. | :09:58.
do. He has got the ball back for his team. | :09:59. | :10:09.
Josh Hodgson, bang of heads? The shoulder, and then the head. The | :10:10. | :10:26.
shoulder, first connection. Just trying to force the error. He knows | :10:27. | :10:34.
that it has potentially gone, saw the opportunity to get the ball | :10:35. | :10:39.
back. I think that he is all right. But he will stay down for a little | :10:40. | :10:40.
bit. Rueful look for Sam Burgess. Some | :10:41. | :11:01.
battle grounds to be fought over the next few weeks. It is a damaging | :11:02. | :11:06.
start to the competition for England. But they know exactly the | :11:07. | :11:12.
task ahead of them. They have got to defeat Scotland and is Julia. -- | :11:13. | :11:22.
Australia. And it could come down to points difference. A lot of things | :11:23. | :11:25.
up for grabs over the next few weeks. New Zealand just looking to | :11:26. | :11:28.
run the clock down. 80 seconds. And here comes Johnson. Turnover. | :11:29. | :12:11.
The referee has been asking the question. Turnover. 30 seconds left | :12:12. | :12:18.
to play. This is it. Can England go 90 metres in 30 seconds? They have | :12:19. | :12:30.
just got to keep the ball alive. 15 seconds. Bateman... This is the last | :12:31. | :12:44.
play. This is going to be the last play. Running into trouble. Has the | :12:45. | :12:57.
referee heard that? Years. Punch of the air from New Zealand players. | :12:58. | :13:06.
Having to do that tough, but doing it tough, Shaun Johnson's drop goal | :13:07. | :13:16.
and has kicking in general. The chances, and begin clinical. As I | :13:17. | :13:20.
said before it is about composure and being clinical. That is the big | :13:21. | :13:23.
difference at this level. New Zealand have been better. Yes. And | :13:24. | :13:29.
it was Shaun Johnson, the difference with his drop goal. He has created | :13:30. | :13:46.
everything. It is a familiar theme. Close but not quite for England. | :13:47. | :13:50.
Still got two battles to face but they have been beaten by New | :13:51. | :13:55.
Zealand. Congratulations. Man of the Match. How tough was that? Very | :13:56. | :14:01.
tough. We knew that we were going to come here and the home support, all | :14:02. | :14:05.
of the players that they have got. Or some from our boys. Massive | :14:06. | :14:17.
effort. Particularly that first 20 minutes, how key was the defence? | :14:18. | :14:20.
You all the pressure that we were able to just go through, and turn | :14:21. | :14:27.
through, score. It was the same in the second half. Boys hung in. You | :14:28. | :14:35.
certainly seem to enjoy playing against England. I am not sure we | :14:36. | :14:40.
enjoy just as much. It is always a pleasure, against a hostile crowd. | :14:41. | :14:50.
Thank you for having us. Thank you. Kevin. That was disappointing from | :14:51. | :14:54.
England perspective? It was tough. To lose by that 65th minute drop | :14:55. | :15:04.
goal, you thought that they could manufacture something. It is | :15:05. | :15:09.
disappointing. The battle was lost. Two big games to come. Whatever | :15:10. | :15:16.
happened, we had to defeat Australia, the final or otherwise. | :15:17. | :15:21.
It is still there. You have only got about ten seconds. New Zealand, too | :15:22. | :15:31.
wordly wise? At crucial times, just making the correct decisions. Thank | :15:32. | :15:35.
you. We will be speaking to the England camp and next week we have | :15:36. | :15:41.
got the double-header, England Scotland and Australia New Zealand. | :15:42. | :15:45. |
