England v South Africa Highlights Rugby Union

Welcome to round three of England's autumn international series. This

is the story so far. Week one, there they were blown away by a

seven-try whirlwind. The Lancaster bombers landed heavy blows. Fiji,

off the campus. England have developed a purple patch. The

Wallabies tear off a strip. Time to ring the changes. One thing is for

sure, things weren't good easier for England. -- won't get easier

the visit of the mighty Springboks. England drew with South Africa in

the final Test in Port Elizabeth in June and now they have to go one

better as they go toe-to-toe with the or after last week's

disappointment against Australia. No, it didn't turn out as expected.

The Cook Cup is Australia's once again and England comeback down to

Earth. Luckily with the or there, you know what's coming. They are

last game, I felt we should have won. So, another huge test for

England. Alongside me, a man who made his debut against the

Springboks in November 1995, Lawrence Dallaglio. I am struggling

with a man of the roof so you have to do the talking. What did you

make of the changes? The quite a few changes, some of them through

injury. Some people have earned the right. Joe Launchbury has made a

few cameo opportunities off the bench so I'm looking forward to

seeing him up. Obviously, the scrum half, Danny Care, Ben Youngs get a

chance again, so hopefully we'll settle down with Toby Flood. Behalf

backs will be key. Mike Brown comes in at full-back. Given the weather

conditions, and the amount to kicking which will take place in

the game, and inspired selection from Stuart Lancaster. A few

moments ago, he was practising his kicks for that are expecting an

aerial attack? We know there by the South Africans will play, obviously

very physical confrontation. A structured game. I don't think

anything I have seen suggests they will play any differently in these

know doubt that they would have taken the points had they had

another chance. Taking three points will be crucial today. The last

time I saw England score from a rolling maul was at least three

years ago. This game will be close. Either team could win it and

England want to be on the right side of the victory to date. They

have given themselves and mountain to climb up with the rankings.

and that is why the penalty has gone his way. Toby Flood has a

second chance to get England in front. He missed his first kick.

South Africa do not usually fail to get the ball back from the

breakdown because they usually take the opposition back. Toby Flood is

down on his knees at the moment close to the England goal line and

seems to be struggling. So England are going to make the change. Toby

Flood will be making his way to the sidelines. And here comes young

Owen Farrell coming on at 6.5 And England penalty. A booming kick.

It finds its touch. Now, watch here for Eben Etzebeth and Clare, both

Africa, just outside the 22, we know what's coming from them. They

getting past the South African defence, they are not following up

with the chase. England, when they have kicked well, they have put

South Africa under pressure, dominated field position, and it is

important they continue to do that, spent time in their path and turn

it into points. They have to be careful not to concede penalties in

dangerous positions. Very much so, this game was always going to be

very close. One penalty, one silly penalty will give the momentum back

to the opposition, but England must stay positive, played the game in

the South African half, and victory could be theirs. Expect more big

hits as we joined Bryan and for the worse at the start of the

You can see the disappointment etched in the Captain's face, a

freak try from South Africa at the start of the second half made the

difference, but it is another dispiriting defeat for England.

Frustration is the overriding emotion, really pleased we stepped

up our level of performance, our physicality at the breakdown, our

speed in defence, our mindset to take on the Springboks, it was good,

and for long periods I thought we were going to do it. We did not

quite get across the line, and that is the frustration we must use as

motivation for the All Blacks next week. I must say, it was

intimidating, for the coaches, I want to apologise, it got quite

hectic at times, but I really believed they have gone from boys

to men and the last few weeks, really proud of the dice, but it

has been tough at Twickenham, always after the last week, I knew

they would come back from the backlash, and lucky to take the win.

There were a lot of positives, obviously there try was one of

those unlucky breaks in life, and a bouncing ball does that. We came

back and we worked very hard, unfortunate we could not get the

last few points. Fortunate with the try? Our try? Yes, definitely, we

were unfortunate to moseyed in the face before, then lucky to charge

on. -- to lose it. But that is what international rugby is about,

getting into the right areas and putting the opposition under

pressure, turning pressure into points. Last week you are

criticised, especially by Sir Clive Woodward, but when he decided to go

for the points today, the crowd were against you. You cannot

reflect on last week when you are there, you have to make a clear

decision, but unfortunately it did not come off. We will review all of

our decisions on Monday. We do not do it immediately after the emotion

of the game, and that will be part of the review that we talk about. I

don't want to talk about it now, because the game is won and lost on

lots of decisions. So I cannot draw you on whether Chris made the right

call or not. No chance! So away win against the southern hemisphere

teams continues and Stuart Lancaster, but he would not be

drawn on whether Chris Robshaw made the right decision. What would you

have done? I would definitely have gone for the corner, but it is

funny, last week the Twickenham crowd were wishing Chris Robshaw to

take the points, this week they were wishing completely the

opposite, and I think the harsh lessons that his England team are

learning, and certainly that Chris Robshaw will learn, is that those

decisions are absolutely crucial to the outcome of the game. You have

to have a little bit our sympathy, there has been stinging criticism

from Sir Clive Woodward, booed this week and last. What we have to

remember about him is that he is only playing something like his

11th Test match, so he is relatively inexperienced. He played

very well today, I thought England played very well, they play the

conditions, and they were unlucky. We must stress that. South Africa

had a fortuitous try, a hammer blow at just the wrong time. The weather

got ahead in these conditions was always going to win the game. --

whoever. England will rue some of the missed penalty opportunities

from Toby Flood in the first half, and some of those decisions at the

end of the second half. Did you like the way that England went

against the Springboks? They were very physical today. They were much

more direct. Manu Tuilagi looked like England's best attacking

weapon. England have got to find a way of bringing Chris Ashton into

their attack a bit more, because when he made a clean break, they

looked like scoring. They played better, but if there was one

decision that went against them, it was where they had the opportunity

to take three points from the halfway line, and that would have

given them an opportunity in the last five minutes to win the game.

When they get into the 22, there of basic errors costing them at

crucial moments. In these conditions, you can understand that

errors and missed passes and dropped passes will happen. What

they have learned is that the difference between winning and

losing at this level is so fine, the margins are so fine. England

were very much in this Test match, South Africa are the second-best

team in the world, and they will be devastated they did not win.

that what Stuart Lancaster will be looking at, the positives, they

almost won the game? There were a few positives, Joe Launchbury's

performance was one, but if they're going to win Test matches, they

have to improve at scrum and line- out. It is England's All Blacks

next week, the women took them on this week in the first of three

the home side ahead, but a charge down from Canterbury's Katy Roberts

and that -- gave New Zealander a lead that was only set to grow.

They got down to business early in the second half, flying through a

leaky England defence, giving the visitors a ten-point lead. A period

of pressure saw England rewarded with a five-metre scrum, and the

pack end their strikes with a clinical pushover finished off by

the number eight, Seru Hunter. Then a successful penalty kick by

Litchfield's Emily Scarratt put England within two points, but this

team effort gave space for Catt merchants to go over for the

winning try. Both teams now have three days to regroup before the

second Test on Tuesday. A fantastic win for England's women.
