Hello and a very warm welcome from Pittodrie. This is an opportunity

for the Scottish side to finish the year on a high, because so far, the

Autumn internationals have not gone COMMENTATOR: Tomlinson

interpretation, and Visser will interpretation, and Visser will

score for Scotland! Lovely ball, lovely try for Israel Dagg.

Beautiful play, that is simply glorious, and this time it is Corie

Jane. Now there is a try, and it's gone to Cross. It is that man again,

Visser advice. A little chip over the top and well placed, he goes

now, a try! Again they step up the pace. In for the try.

Oh a risky pass, and Strauss is in for a try, the hooker for his

second try. It is a long line, and second try. It is a long line, and

taken by Brown and straight through. Moments of encouragement against

the best two teams in the world. But so far not a full match

performance from Scotland in the Autumn internationals. Will it

happen today against Tonga? Well joining me here, we've got Chris,

can Scotland do today against the side, a big test against South

Africa and New Zealand, but it is important Scotland can finish on a

high? Yes. They can, there's positive past performance against

South Africa and New Zealand but the consistency has to be there, it

has to be here this afternoon, Tonga is a big physical side, and

it will take determination to grind them down. If we keep the ball and

build the phases we can get a win. Defensive, Scotland has been so

strong in that department, and they can't afford do that today?

Definitely not, it has been highlighted the first two matches,

weaknesses at the defence, they worked hard in training for that to

happen. No-one expected them to do well in the first two matches,

Tonga are 12th, so the pressure is on Scotland, so they have to have a

clean game, do the tackles, and keep the ball, to keep a chance to

win here in Pittodrie. Andy Robinson spoke to Jane. Andy

you've made changes, for this game, is it safe to say we're unhappy,

maybe disappointed with players after the last defeat? Overall,

we've been please with the a number of the performances we've had, in

spells, but we haven't put a 80- minute performance together. Today

is giving a 80 minute performance and giving an opportunity to show

that. Is this a must-win game, in terms of what you're trying to do

with Scotland and in terms to looking ahead with six nations?

Every game for me is a must of win game. When you look at it, this is

the next one for us, I'm looking forward to seeing how we take on

the Tongans, they're a physical side and good side, and we can

expect a really tough challenge. But we've got to find the answers.

Over the last couple of weeks, we've played well but not found the

answers to break down for 80 minutes. What about the narrow

pitch out there, could that be more suiting to them? A narrow pitch, is

what we've got to deal with. We have to be able to play through the

defence. It is very hard to play around a defence, we have to play

over the defence as well, and astute kicking game, good running

game and get opportunities within that. A narrow pitch, six yards

shorter than Murrayfield, so three yards either side. Chris, let's

come to you, can we get the ball out to Tim Visser, the narrow pitch,

it may be tricky? Tifplt makes it difficult, it is a bonus for the

defending team, hind drans for the attacking team. Here, you have to

go forward and confront the opposition, to go for the go-

forward ball, to make it wide to Visser. Scotland have to be

physical and put the Tongans on the back foot, get quick ball, like

we've seen towards the end of the match last week. A little bit of

width and find space toss scores tries. One guy who is a star, is

this guy here, Kyle Traynor in as prop, is there pressure on him?

There is pressure on him, it is a shame, that he is not around today.

He has been the pick so far, he's had outstanding, Kyle Traynor has

been out of the system, he had a contract on the tail end of the

last year, now he is selected and back in, and he's quoted in the

paper he has an opportunity and this is a massive opportunity for

him today. He will be up against it, because Tongans are large in the

front row. They've mentioned this is an area they're going to could

battle in the forwards, so it will be interesting to see how he goes.

It will be convincing that Kyle Traynor will get a hard time, he

will get a go at him. They're big boys, coming out on the pitch now.

A man that will have a difficult time, starting here at number nine

scrum half for Scotland and impressive, particularly?

Absolutely, different pressure starting the game, to coming off

the bench, but he's played particularly well for Glasgow this

year. He stepped up, and Castle being injured, but he had a few

fantastic games off the bench. Harsh Blair? Blair had one of the

best matches, a difficult first half last week, he's put his hand

up, and say he was at fault for the second try. But, yeah, a tad harsh,

but he is a quality athlete and enjoying his rugby in France, and I

believe he will push his way back in time for the Six Nations.

hooker as well, Ford, first choice, untried front row, Scott Lawson has

his time to claim? If he is not in form, then he is happy to make the

changes, he's done that with Mike Blair, and now who would think that

would happen. Andy picked a strong side. Just now, we don't see a lot

of changes, so this is a strong side that will be up against it.

Because the Tongans, you saw them running out, they're a massive

outfit, but Scotland have come well in the two games, they showed

promise, and it's mentioned, they have to keep it going for 80

minutes. If they don't do that, the bookies are saying Scotland to win

by six, which makes it tight to the end. It certainly will be. Number 1,

my goodness, heart attack, there, the pyrotechnics there. 13, he

likes playing there, he is not there, he is mostly on the wing,

but big game? Max can use his foot work. They can break them down.

run-up, and pull back. The touch judges don't like it, missed the

right post. The Scots are breathe. They can but can't afford to give

away like that. Sometimes you have to give a penalty if you're

stretched in defence, but that wasn't necessary, Strokosch didn't

have to come in on the side. Discipline absolutely key. Lawson

it was, knocked on though, says Mathieu Raynal, it will be a scrum

to Tonga, unless they elect a player. This is what Robinson does,

the forwards kick the ball out. It will be the first scrum of the day.

It is interesting to see how the first scrum happens. They were

strong against the Springboks, Tonga wouldn't be as strong, but it

will be a good pack. We'll have a good view here of the near side,

the massive man, Alisona Taumalolo from Perpignan. This will be

crucial. Scots went early, free kick, taken by the big man who

to the Tongan side, second penalty, Andy Nicol, this time, tackle, and

not rolling away. Scotland under pressure defensively, initially it

was good, but Tonga got in behind too easily. You can see it here,

good offload. I think he's penalised Kelly Brown. There's

Kelly Brown, off with injury through the summer. One of the

great players, Kelly Brown, on form, good captain and getting back into

it. If he's given away the penalty, he knows he may have given three

points to this man, Fangatapu Apikotoa. They dominated the first

five minutes, Scotland hardly touched the ball. Just outside the

22, that looks better, flags go up and Tonga take a three-point lead

here at Pittodrie in the third of the November tests. So the game

starts now, because Scotland haven't had the ball, they've had

one box kick, good kick now. It is important, you can see the crowd

from Pittodrie, they want to give a lift to the Scotland team. Taken by

this huge full back Lilo, one of the biggest full backs, 25th cap,

cleared it up to their own ten metre line. Ford has been misfiring

at the lineout, and this is key for Greig Laidlaw, Visser off loads,

inside. Up that left-wing. Could be offside, yes penalty to Scotland.

Scots will play it though, right- wing, Apikotoa takes it, they'll

play the penalty from the other side of the pitch. Penalty

advantage was being played. There was a lot of numbers for Scotland.

It wasn't a bad decision to make the cross-field kick, but what he

couldn't do is put it in the 22, to allow, Apikotoa to mark it. Good

technique, great offload to Traynor, who is good around the park. He

recycleed it, it wasn't quick, but Murray gets taged and this was the

cross field kick that went a bit too far. Better signs for Scotland

there. Well, Laidlaw has a chance to make

the other half, big strong powerful runner.

The Tongans are a mile off-side. Laidlaw to Strokosch, he runs into

two or three red shirts. Pyrgos, Evans with a kick, Kellock

can't get there, but good urgent play by the Scots. Absolutely,

exactly what Pyrgos had to do, he gave the spark into the South

African gave. A quick penalty in the ninth minute, and good offload.

That's the urgency to spark the game. When Evans gets it, he gives

a good kick. But still it is a good position now for Scotland. Taken by

Kellock. He was on form last week, good drive by the Scots. The

Tongans try to spin it. Lawson burrowing, with his head down. Big

chance today. Pyrgos out to Lamont. Two yards short of the line,

Strokosch goes in. Tongan defence is firm, penalty though, not

got close, is to get it into the moderation. He was isolated there.

You can see it there, take the ball, he tries to get it into Hall. He

was penalised for not moving away. Scotland have an easy chance to

equalise the game. Straight through the posts. Three points on the

score board for Scotland. 11 minutes gone. Better play by the

Scots. Much better, much, much better. They looked dangerous, and

urgency that Pyrgos brought into the game. One man left, he is not

really well. This is the big man, who thought he had a contact with

Glasgow, but wasn't taken up, fires up. They're just over the halfway

line. Fangatapu Apikotoa, will he kick or run, a long spiral kick,

that is a beauty, inside his own 22. Denton gave him the ball, Tongans

under pressure. What a fantastic kick from Stuart Hogg. That's a

real strength to his game. I'm impressed with his length. Look at

this, great technique, look at the distance, right in the 22, and now,

Alastair Kellock and Gray great pressure at the Tongan lineout.

That looks not straight. It is. This will be a scrum to Scotland,

with every possible option. Just see how you can go defence to

attack in one kick. Hogg was in 22, Tongan, miscalled, they misjudged

the lift and everything, and now Scotland have a scrum on the 22,

seconds after the long kick from I make it that the Tongans average

out the pack at 18 stone 1, which is about two pounds heavier than

the Scots per man, but it is experience too, a lot more

experience in blue, and this will be a battle royal, this one we're

seeing here, Murray against Alisona Taumalolo, from The Highlanders

originally. Good pressure from Tonga. Pyrgos, Laidlaw, Evans, this

is Evans. Dodge and dive his way gave it away cheaply. It was

interesting, Andy wasn't it, we think we spotted a punch. Pressure

coming in here, goes down, Traynor goes down, well, Moa is held on

here, he is holding him, he is telling him to get off, nothing

wrong there. Not a punch. Strokosch deserves something more

severe. Twice the passing let them down, they're trying to get the

pass on, against Tonga, you must make sure the passes are in front

of the player. That was a solid Tongan scrum, long and deep. Visser

has Hogg looking around, looks to his right and left and offloads to

Hogg. Hogg is hit around the corner. Kellock, keeping the ball alive,

Gray looked like a high shot to me. Tongueons look suspiciously offside.

Referee's pepblised Scotland for going off the feet at the point of

contact -- pepblised. You see he takes it up there, there's he is

there, he took the massive hit in, 20th minute. He didn't know much

about it, but great to have him back. An iconic figure, a lot of

people love kids wants to be Richie Gray, and that's what we need.

Yes please he is six foot nine, 126.1 kilograms. The man who hit

him, six foot eight, long pass into midfield. Huge men today.

Forwards don't come around, give it back instead. Tongans, look well

drilled, Andy. Absolutely. You know what you're going to get, and

they're doing exactly that, running hard fast and straight. They've the

most successful Englishman in front of them, Dave Ellis, the man who

helped them to the French World Cup. Gives it to Murray. Murray, sneaks

over the 22. Pyrgos can't kick to touch. Well taken by Lilo. Scots

are over the ball. Could be can be a pepbl although - penalty. Yes it

is. He competes well against Lilo, he goes over it, and goes to ground.

You can see referee's penalising Lamont there, but he's looked the

other way and given it to Scotland. He gets the feet good and goes over

the top. Both went down the same time. It's a matter of

interpretation. He thought he was going forward.

Yeah but he didn't. OK, a lineout for the Scots. Lawson here. He is

in for his throwing in and burrowing ability he's got around

the pitch. Kellock, beautiful, Laidlaw. Evans.

Out to Visser, Visser on the way. Lamont, way off, on the left,

Lamont two metres short. Penalty to Scotland says Mathieu Raynal. There

will be a problem here, because there are too many penalties given

to Tongans at ruck time. Probably got pulled into the ruck,

unfortunately couldn't get the quick ball. Encouraging signs.

We've talked about the narrowness Scotland couldn't get the ball wide

from the first phase. Visser got the ball, that's what they need to

do. Visser wasn't in the game last week. Pyrgos had to go in and clear

out. That meant the ball wasn't able to get whipped away. Scotland

now though, keeping the momentum up. lighthouses to hit. Kellock, they

pick out the man, Denton has that. The Scots have a ball. Six, seven

metres out. Stay steady, folding away the Tongan players. Lawson,

there you can see, this will be a try, they're over the line, and

Lawson, is he down, has he got it down? He must have got this town.

He was in total control, as Scotland were, let's see it as it

comes out. Lawson's patting the man in front

of him. If Scotland haven't scored, they should have scored. Murray is

coming up at the end. It was a well constructed maul.

They showed exposure because it got a wee bit ragged.

Let's have a look. What we can't see it was Lawson or Murray at the

back here. It is not Murray. I don't know if

he's got that, Murray might have got underneath him.

Here we can, there's the ball. Murray's ahead of him. Up to this

point they've controlled it very well.

You can't actually see the ball going down. You can't see the ball

here at any time. Lawson has got it, Scotland is going over nicely. It

comes down, it should be a penalty, because Tongans have taken it down.

There's the white ball there, it is on Murray now. There it is, it is

off the ground. It looks like it was off the ground there, and the

question is... Here we goanty... You can go by reaction, the

Scotland players know, it hasn't been given so right decision.

scrums are even, so this is Scotland with a scrum, you can hear

the crowd, desperate for something to happen. Three a piece. Coming up

for a quarter of the way through the match. Murray here against

Taumalolo. Aulika on the tight head but the Scots might fancy their

chances here, Andy Nicol? These are no mugs, they're a strong

scrummaging outfit. I think skolts will want Murray to get a edge up,

to get Latu in the defence, and then we'll see Scott or Visser run

quite close to the scrum here, the way they're setting up. There's the

view behind him there. Murray against Taumalolo. Referee

gives a penalty. I think they're going to go for the lineout.

There's so many things that can go wrong in the scrum, the last

lineout have been good. Not one lost. Brown is saying stick to the

corner. We should have got a try a minute ago, so let's see if we can

get it now. Laidlaw puts it out. It will be a throw-in to Lawson. He

can hit Denton, Brown, he can hit Kellock Gray, as you say, they'll

probably go for the maul. Or go for a try. Short ball,

Kellock, he has Gray, instant pressure, Tongans forced them back.

Penalty, you can see the arm of the referee. Tongans are making a mess

of this. Yeah, they're conceding penalties, if I was Brown, I'd say

let's do it again. The more penalties they give away, the more

chances of a yellow card. They're coming in, picking up before the

player was down. He penalised a number four, American footballer,

went to train with Chicago bears, the big man in the middle. Taken by

Kellock. Tongans aren't stacking which is a big mistake. Scots have

a drive on. A couple of Tongan bodies on the ground. The ball with

Lawson, inching towards the line, two metres to go. Lawson still has

it. He mass Murray beside him. Held up of the line.

Scrum five. Second time Scotland looked in total control, they were

inching towards the line. They were giving shape to to their maul. They

were : Maybe they were giving them too much time, maybe the maul is

too slow. The Tongans aren't stacking, the Scots are waiting and

setting up their movement. I think, you can get into trouble doing that,

they did everything well right there in the two mauls. It is the

last bit, instead of, as soon as you see the white line, sometimes

you get the white line fever, and players want to fall over. A bit

more exposure there. This is Elvis Taione. Look at that.

Everybody's having a break. In fact it is feeding time for some people.

They've not been down there in the last ten minutes. Scotland, just

outside the 22. This is the maul, very well set up. You can see them

ciefg it forward, Scotland. There's the - driving it forward, Scotland.

I thought they would inch it over the line, but then, I think they

got he can sighted, and there was no way. When a maul is set up, that

should be a flop over the line. Tongans are wheeling them, if you

wheel the maul, you don't get the forward momentum. Free kick to

been camped in the Tongan 2 now for the last seven or eight minutes

without anything. They've got close a few times. They've dominated

possession, the first six minutes, that was Tonga, so Scotland have

turned this around in the last 17, 17 minutes Good solid scrum. These

scrums are going well, Denton goes down the short side. Makes the

extra two metres. Pyrgos has to dig. Referee says play on.

Picked it up, that's a maul. Lawson looks, sees Gray. Head down, taken

low. Fair enough, Brown looked at it, and taken by the captain Latu.

Moa can clear his lines. Lilo kicks, thinks of the quick one, that was

where Scotland should have scored from. Credit to Tongan defence,

aggressive and low, good decision- making for them. Especially for

Latu who saw the ball was out. This was the turnover. Scotland

just getting a bit wayward in couple of mips, the Tongans have

weathered Scottish attack, they've tageled well and played their lines.

Scotland at the back move there, where lots, there was lots of

traffic and movement, ended up with Scott drifting out and taking man

and ball from Latu. That flow of traffic, was good but Hufanga held

it up. This ball doesn't come back immediately, it's turnover ball and

Tonga get to put in the scrum. came from sevens, trying to hold

the man up in the middle of the pitch, the Irish do it very well,

the Irish national team. It is going to be disappointing, to say

they've ten minutes in camp, twice the mauls looked like they were

going over. And twice they looked like they were going to score but

pressure on the Tongan scrum. Which they do, but a solid scrum it is

from Tonga. Into midfield. Hits that with both two players

there, not adventurist there, I thought they would be better.

They've been having to defend for the last 15 minutes. Thought they

might have a bit more of a go there. Midfield and straight back to

Fangatapu Apikotoa. Lawson, one thing he can do is pick out a

target. Knock on by who? That was a commentators curse, wasn't it.

throw-in was very good. It brought in clearly for this, and the first

five linouts it's been good. A couple of errors creeping in.

Let's talk about this, the width of this pitch, 64 metres instead of 70

metres, so you have full three either side. Does it make a

difference. That's two defenders, when you think about it. So ideally,

Scotland would like to play the wide spans of Murrayfield, but look

at the crowd and this is the right place to be, Pittodrie. Lilo the

full back. Moa. Going around the corner again.

Fangatapu Apikotoa. The men over this side maybe, even behind. Makes

that cardinal error of allowing himself to be tackled into touch.

There's the narrowness of the pitch coming into play. I'm impressed of

the scrum half. Look at that. If that was at Murrayfield, there's

ten yards for Tonga to play in there. There's no way you would be

tackling into touch, but we're not and he was.

Taione, again, Tongans getting more into their drive. Lilo, that's a

good piece of play. I can't see who is in the middle of the ruck. But

whoever that is bridging: Lawson I think, good piracy. It was but a

great kick from Pyrgos, but Moa, he dummies and goes, and runs between

the two props, Traynor and Murray cannot afford to miss tackles like

that. He should get knocked back to scrum half if he is running between

Laidlaw go. He is looking beside him. Good play by Scotland. Knock-

on by somebody. Tongans have it though. That was a great little

break by Greig Laidlaw. I think he had Strokosch on his shoulder, just

couldn't find the man. Apikotoa, nearly there, Visser did

well to keep it well. What a game we have now. Lamont to Hogg. This

is where he could be dangerous, the pace, gets up, still making a yard

or two. Lawson's everywhere. Laidlaw, longer pass, Denton.

Crashing up. Still crawling, Pyrgos. Gray took

another hit to his head there. Pyrgos there. Referee says play on.

Not enough bodies in there for Scotland. Tonga making a newsance

of themselves. Gray was offside there. Interesting calls here. That

looked like a Tongan through the Scottish. Competitive there, but

Gray wasn't ever on side. But this was great by Laidlaw. He opened up

in front of him. He got away, and decision, Strokosch tried to

offload him. Blind side was better, to hold on to. Hogg, a shorter kick.

protect the ball because Tonga are flying in. Mostly legally, but

sometimes illegally. Denton has been physical, and takes it: He's a

lad left out of the first one, because he wasn't playing that well

for Edinburgh. Stick him on a big stage and he is devastating, Denton.

He was a great impact when he first got into Six Nations, the injury

forced him out early against New Zealand. He's not looked back, but

he struck Strokosch, and Murray and Gray will have to do a lot of the

dog work because the Tongan pack is physical and competing at every

break down. This is the third meeting, Scotland have scored three

times as many times as Tonga. Kellock. There's going to be a card

bringing to deck the person lifting him. And that's dangerous, because

if the lifter is pulled to ground the ball carrier can be up in the

air and fall from a height. Here we are again A lineout five yards from

the Tongan line. Now they have an extra man advantage. This needs a

bit of exposure, a good execution and Scotland should get a try.

crowd roar. Kellock wasn't lifted, Tonga has turned it over. Moa,

Visser. Watches it bounce. Listen to the crowd. Ball presentation not

that great, knock-on. Sloppy play from Scotland. The lineout didn't

work, look at this, this is the yellow card, taken out, taken out

Brown. You can't do that. You can take down the ball carrier but not

the lifter. Lokotui gets a ten minutes, but Scotland weren't able

to get the lineout. That will be very frustrating. For Scotland

management and the supporters, because they're still 3-3, after 35

minutes. Scotland dominated possession and territory, but still

hasn't got over the white war. Murray sticking lens in. And

Scotland will be a man up in the next scrum. It will be a scrum to

the Tongans. Remember the last meeting, 2001, Murrayfield Scotland

beat Tongan by 43-20, Gavin Hastings have a record for scoring

31 points, in the 45 win in the World Cup. I played that game, let

me tell you, you know you're in a game when you're with Tonga, it was

tough. Tonga, a man down and holding this

scrum, that's remarkable. Second row down.

Scott, woe. Boy oh boy! Well played Matt Scott. He just takes it into

Lokotui, I like what he did there, take it in, what I think the

referee is looking for is there was no engagement in the arms. I'm not

sure he had a chance, it was such a big hit from Scott. I heard him say,

fair play to Matt Scott, there you are, just pick the biggest bloke,

run at him, and he's got the being scored. It is like last week,

Scotland 63 possession against South Africa and lost the game. 71%

a call for squint throw. If the ball goes squint along the

opposition, that's fair game. No advantage to the team throwing it

in if they're throwing down the opposition line. But it is squint.

That's the first mistake from Scott call off the wing to go in as the

far wing forward, so if anything comes out of the scrum down the

Scottish side, Visser is in with a free run. Andy, let's be honest,

unconvincing so far, lots of effort, could have had a couple of tries,

but you get the feeling if Scotland could get one score, they'll get

more. They need to have the first one, they lack the exposure at the

necessary time. There's some exciting play, there's more space

on the pitch I thought there could be. We could hit them with Visser

and Hogg. Yeah, by Moa. This will be a short penalty to Scotland, who

want a scrum because they have a man up, if the Tongans put in

Fetu'u Vainikolo again, they have a free man. They can't do that, with

at the statistics at the top of the screen, that's the one that's

important. Scotland in the last two minutes, can get a try, and get in

at 10-3, you take it and move on. If it remains at 3-3, there will

abhuge element of frustration in so Laidlaw has a opportunity to add

another three points. It is right decision. Scotland have

gone for the lineout a few times but 3-3, it is half time up than

drawing. Do you know I don't think I've seen a game with so much

territory and possession to one time without the boints to --

points to go with it. Laidlaw getting his chance, and he does.

Laidlaw then, making Scotland 6, Tonga 3, one minute to go until

half time. This will be a momentum set now. If they can take the

lineout and get something else before half time, because their

players deserve more than a 6-3 lead but they haven't been able to

get across the try line because of exposure and execution. Send it

back to the halfway line with interest. 30 second to go, until

lineout to be tricky for them, with Lokotui off the pitch. Tonga have

this, Moa realises it's half time. isn't it? When the Scots try to set

up a ruck, Tongans get in. Kellock make the two or three vital yards.

they have men to the left. It could be interception, nearly there. This

is a break now from the Connaught winger. It kicks up, covers, he

goes into touch. We played a minute and 15 of extra time in the first

half and there we are, this is where first half ends. Nicol, lot

of huffing and puffing, but we need a score. We do. Large aspects have

been encouraging. There's been the people going through gaps, Pyrgos

brought energy as we saw last week, he's had a good 40 minutes, but

Scotland had a couple of real chances to get tries through the

forwards and they botched them. This there be will be disappointing,

they dominated territory and possession but not the score line.

OK, there's the view at Pittodrie as the players go in for the half

time break, and their video analysis. And they'll try and sort

out what's going wrong. Not being happened: Well, interesting start,

Laidlaw had a chance to draw, two minutes later but the posts get in

the way. Two minutes again, Laidlaw sure fire for the boot, made it 3-3.

Scotland had a chance, catched on the Tongan line for five minutes,

the TMO says this wasn't a try, hard to argue with. After concerted

effort from Scotland it was Laidlaw once again, who got the boot on the

ball to make it 6-3 at half time. Scotland dominated possession and

territory. Laidlaw two penalties, so, as I say, possession and

territory are all about Scotland, frapgly at half time. 73% at

possession, and 73% territory, but the fact is Scotland haven't scored

a try, despite the fact they were given the opportunity to a few

occasions during that. OK, 6-3 at occasions during that. OK, 6-3 at

half time. Frustrating a wee bit from Scottish point of view, but

they have the advantage, the three point advantage at half time, and

Chris and Dougie watched this. Your thoughts on that? Well, I agree, it

is frustrating. A lot the statistics show, but the lack of

exposure, just, when the line is just in front of us, opportunities,

great break, but moved the space and turned it over. No lack of

endeavour or commitment, it is a physical game, but on the Tongan

aspect, they look disciplined, they look as if they play as a team,

they look well structured and organised. And to defend against

73% of oppose and concede two penalties is a credit to them.

Dougie, they are clearly organised, as Chris said, and Scotland were

camped on the line over in the corner there, and you were almost

screaming for the ball to be thrown out of the line to give backs a

chance. A physical side again? frustrating, I agree, frustrating

and disappointed the way it happened in the first half. Tongan,

they're organised but there are areas in the first half that

Scotland have broken through the defence but not backed up.

Unforcedersors, wrong decision, they're trying to play Tonga at

their own game, ruck and ball, but it won't happen. When they get a

chance, it is the same story, that they lose the ball. There's errors

in the lineouts within five yards, again it should be polished, they

should know where the ball is going, work on that, and finish it off.

That's not happened. But there's phases, where Visser for example,

he's kept the crowd going with his endeavour and run into space, and

Laidlaw has found that. That needs to continue, because at the moment

the forwards are doing their bit. But they're not backing it up with

any clinical position. Henry Pyrgos making his first start at first

half, are you impressed with him? have done. See him, Visser having a

crack, and Henry is sharp, he's looking like he's playing with

confidence. This is early on, Scotland went for width. Notices

the penalty advantage, and he is away. Visser is hard to get inside.

But that wasn't capitalised on the points. Great break and

points. Great break and understanding but a wee bit.

Exactly, what happened there, from the quick kick-off, Pyrgos was

quick, and that's how you are creating opportunities for the team.

Try to play it up with the forwards. They've possession there, and God

yardage, they do it once and then stop. You have to keep doing it

because it makes yardage. Pyrgos is doing well, lovely to see from from

doing well, lovely to see from from a scrum half.. You were right, they

will be seen behind the scrum. Tim Visser, he is an exciting player,

and obviously, he is from the Netherlands, he qualifies for

Scotland, and he is great to see. He is a tremendously strong player

and worked so hard on his skills. He is a raw athlete, coming in from

news castle. To get the offload away, because he is big and

powerful he is comfortable in possession of the ball. He is

targeted with two defenders, but he gets the ball awaifplt his work

rate is involved in twor or three parts of the game Wingers are not

known to do that, that's the support there, to win the ball,

support there, to win the ball, which is lovely to see. He is

keeping the crowd going W back passes, and we need to keep him in

the game more. That pass is better, Visser allows the Tongans, that's

what we're saying the continuity and consistency, difficult to do,

but the All Blacks, small things done well, makes them the best in

the world. And if we have the territory and pressure again,

really fine tune some of the things we're doing. It is interesting, you

mention the forwards doing their job, but it is not followed up upon.

The interesting stuff is all backs, and Laidlaw had a lovely little

dummy pass and run, and giving it to Strokosch. Disappointing for

Scotland. But nice to see the setup? Set-pieces are gone well in

areas. That was a great lineout. And there's gaps overlaping the

Tongan defence, it is little passes, if they're not on, don't do them.

If they recycle there, the Scots, could possibly have been in with a

score. That's the story of the first half, trying to force these

unforced errors. That's a good example, of Laidlaw, it went

through, and there's Visser, Stuart Hogg has done well, he's brought it

to the line a couple of times, a quick ball, but again, it slows

down. It happens, a bit. Unable to work out who is the target man

there, and the ball above the head which shouldn't be happening at

this stage. But, the Tongans, finish, they're quick over the stop

of the ball. There's an example there. Coming in to the side,

they're working very well with Scotland. The referee's allowing

some of it to go. Gray there, on the ball. They've won a lot of the

contact sessions with the Tongans, and the referees are allowing the

Tongans getting away with it. Some are down at the lineout, which is

just caused there. Sthoot story there, is all the pressure and not

enough points? Exactly that. It is similar to last week, although

we've had territory possession, the speed of the possession has been

poor. The Tongans are slow in possession, they attacked ten

minutes to last time, but every time they have the ball it was

quick, one man in, ball presentation well, cleared out, and

ball cleared away. We've seen the Tongans disrupt our ball, which is

easier defending the slow ball. We need to get back to the similar

last 20-30 minute toss last week's game. Skat skat skat had a little

run, just - Matt Scott had a little run there. Just remind yourselves,

it was a sore one! It was a sore one, we knew that was going to

happen. Every time you see that, oh, you wince. In fairness to him, he's

done well through the Autumn tests, very physical, maybe picked the

wrong man. Is that not a high hit? No, the boy, the Tongan was going

for the ball and hit. The referee could have given it as a high

tackle, but it is the way they play, the Tongans, and probably was very

physical, but what was good to see, is Matt Scott continueed. This is

from my point of view, the commitment is there from the Scotch

boys, we thought that we could have gone down there, he recycleed, from

a supporter, that's lovely to see that happening, but it was a big

hit. I wouldn't have tried to run through a tight head. Run around

them, even if it takes three weeks. Let me tell you, a couple of

matches kicked off, the Autumn internationals earlier today.

England against souf, the team who beat us last week, it is 16-6, and

- South Africa, and three penalties. Ireland against Argentina, gill Roy

and Sexton, good result for Ireland, 46-24, that's a great result

against Argentina, which looked impressive since coming over for

the Autumn internationals. He can see highlight later on. The Welsh

they do in the second half to get that advantage, 73% of possession

So it will be interesting to see, what within Yitzhak Rabin has been

able to do in the last db Andy Robinson to do in the last ten

minutes. Last parts of it have been good. But we've not been able to

get over the line. That's what rugby is all about. Scotland

searching for their first home win in more than a year, their last

victory in Scotland was 23-12 over Italy in Murrayfield. 20-11 since

then, they've lost their last four matches, England, France, New

Zealand and South Africa. So a win is badly needed.

interesting, hen the Tongans click, they should have beaten Italy by

all accounts. They beat the US. They're not confident, if they're

to click, they'll be dangerous. Easy scrum for the Tongans. Moa

Laidlaw can't kick directly to touch, it was taken back, long to

gaining ground. Tongans forced back. Hogg, Earl ping pong. Hogg. To be

fair it hit the stand. He's flying up, easy step from

Fangatapu Apikotoa. The lineout functioned in the first half. Build

shoulder. Have some place now. Laidlaw, Denton. Oh he's pulled

back has Denton. And the Scots are accused of sealing this ball off.

It is interesting Andy, the way so many of the Scottish attacks has

been wiped out by the Tongans. we're trying to take them on

sometimes at thank their own game, which is if you run high, and long

then: Look this, you just can't take one player, one attacker, is

going to be driven back by two defenders, then you sale the ball

off, hence why you can see the penalty. Look where the possession,

that Scotland have conceded because they've put one man runners up.

Scotland. You're right, when you get to the 22, you want to come

away with something. It did get that penalty from

Laidlaw. 9-3, starting to build a bit of a lead. Scotland, if they

could keep the pressure, there's more zip to the players, half time

This is really good play. I think that's the big second row Tukulua

substituted has completely turned this game. Tonga a point down. The

only try of the game to them. Tukulua Lokotui, the man who was

off for ten minutes in the sin bin after 51 or so minutes has Tonga

right back in the game. And that is the kick that puts Tonga into the

lead here at Pittodrie! This is a remarkable score line. 52 minutes,

you can hear the crowd, and the anxiousness in their voices. No

need to panic, but they'll be disappointed. When you get that

close, you need big hits to stop the players. The last few minutes,

Scottish defence was lax. Andy Robinson's responded with changes

because Barclay is on the back row instead of Denton. There's a real

contrast in styles too, between Scotland, which is much wider and

Tongans, who when they want to play, they just truck up. Lawson to

Laidlaw. Laidlaw looked to Evans who was

cutting back inside. Six foot five full back.

Comes back the Tongan side, kick ahead by the wing forward. Oh

nearly. Knock on that was. I tell you what, Andy Nicol, these Tongans

side putting Scotland under pressure. We knew they were going

to be a good side. Rugby ball with bounce in every direction. Knocked

on there. The Tongan wingers, has 14 on his back but he plays on the

left-winger. But Scotland need to grab the game back. They started

the first ten minutes, the second half was good. They almost got the

try when Lamont made the break. They got the penalty and 9-3 up,

they golt slack in defence. One of the goals for today's game, the

main was to win it, but not to concede a try. So they'll be

disappointed that they've conceded that try to Tonga. These are big

Tongan men. As I said before, we started average weight of 18 stone

1 in that pack. And Mafi the big number six as normer with Leicester,

penalty. That was a sole scrum. Now is the chance for Laidlaw to drill

the ball down the right hand touch line. Get a good position, and

start the lineout. Build the phases and the pressure

back on this Tongan defence, who are always susceptible to one or

two running out and creating space. We saw the first half, can Scotland

build the phases because they need it? Lawson, there's the SIU

President. Inside ball to Lamont. He's the main ball carrier today.

Just the Tongans slow to roll away. That's another reason to build the

phases, they give away penalties. Mailau is lying there, build the

phases and put them under pressure. Also then, there's every chance you

are going to get opportunity like this, to get the lead back.

Greig Laidlaw calmly just to the right of the posts. Now for a

chance to get his team back in the lead here, in what is a fraught

game at Pittodrie on a narrow pitch bother for Laidlaw. Now he needs

his forwards to start playing. He needs to pick up the games and get

territory and be a bit more brutal. If Scotland had a couple of points

in the first half, it is what happens after that, they defended

for five minutes, now it is a case of getting the ball, and get back

down the park. You're right,lies ton the crowd, they want to see

Scotland smash the ball. Kellock has done well with the kick-off.

Lawson pull it is back, chips over the big Tongans. He keeps going.

This is a good player, try the offload. Apikotoa, goes for Hogg,

He's told to use it. Number one was offside. Was that

not taken back into touch. Yes it was. That's an elementry mistake,

Matt Scott holds his head. That will be a lineout on the 22 to the

The Tongans, completely different game from the Scots. Just that one

pass across the game line but not enough if you don't have enough

supporters with you, you will be isolated as you were there.

Best of defence for Scotland. The same aggressive pick and go, one

pass from Tonga, but Scotland's defence was more the front foot,

double team forced a turnover again. Allowed Scotland now to get the

ball down the pitch. Snore substitution. Nick De Luca is

coming on for Max Evans. So De Luca who has sparkling ability but maybe

sometimes hasn't had his best. Did really in the south seas, great

player on his day. He needs a big game today. I'm looking forward to

see Max Evans play at 13, Scotland used him at the wings, but I think

it is inevitable, in a pitch like Pittodrie he wasn't going to get

free spaced-out there, on the 13 channel, he now hand today Nick De

Luca, and it is up to him to take us through to the last 20 minutes,

and get Scotland a victory. Tongans nicely to Laidlaw. Dummy pass this

blanket of three players. Again it is the inability of the Tongans to

roll away. It gives the Scots another penalty. Yes it is, the

referee is going to have a word that penalties are accumulating

again, there was a sin bin in the first half, and Scotland are really

in the realms if this could happen again. He's saying next time,

Scotland, I've said it a lot, build the phases, build the pressure on

the Tongan defence. So Greig Laidlaw elects to go for goal,

nephew of one of the greatest players who played Scotland, has

aloft the guile that goes with the name. He could play scrum half, he

is a flexible player. He's done well at standoff. I think he's good

reader of the game. You saw in the first half, he was going through

with the move, and saw there was a space open up in front of him.

That's what good players should do, scan, and be aware, he does that

very well. Just left of the posts. Looks up has that little walk to

the right, two steps, right foot and the crowd seep to like it, the

touch judges like this, another three points on the score board.

15-10. Scotland have their noses back in front. A couple of Tongans

feeling the impact that's going on now. It is a case of build momentum.

Scotland have done well since they've done well. But Tonga took

the lead, Scotland responded well. They have their noses in front. Can

they push forward. It is a comfortable victory rather than a

nervous one, as it was two years offloads the tackle nicely.

Scottish defending is all enclosing. Little chip through, taken nicely

this time, offloading by Moa, over the line. Tonga playing more widely

now. Latu is waiting for it in the

middle. Latu with a long pass to Mafi, he

shows and goes, Tonga playing side to side. Scots not moving there.

You can see the Tongan pattern, get to the touch line and they're one

pass in the middle. Number eight inside. Moa, whoops. Midfield. Ball

a couple of tackles, Gray is there. Tonga with momentum here. It is a

penalty to Tonga instead, they deserve this, looking to go quickly.

There's a couple of poor attempts stringstor Tonga, he did a lovely

pull there. This was the end. Taking it forward, Moa takes it on.

Lawson, I tell you, these are close calls, that could have been called

either way. Because I think, there try scored and that's by the

Tongans, the big man in the bin, Lokotui, this could be a relatively

three points to bring them 15-13, and all to play for. 65 mips to go.

Polite applause from the crowd. I always thought it was going to be a

tight game It is proving that. Really important ten minutes I

think, now for Scotland. Get themselves to allow a comfortable

last five minutes, not an arm with the gap there.

Laidlaw covered it with his kick. He missed it.

Picked up by Mafi. The winger, this is dangerous, he was off, to the

left the Connaught player, with a try, that started on their own 22,

that could be a dager to the heart of Scottish rugby here. Because he

went slipping through tackles and ran 60 metres, Fetu'u Vainikolo,

that was a good score. That was a very good score, a great finish by

Fetu'u Vainikolo. I've been impressed with and look

at the space down, it is a dummy there, Visser gets caught, No Man's

Land, doesn't do one or the other, Vainikolo has the pace. Good

decision there, Visser takes the dummy and then does nothing. And

Tonga go in, Fetu'u Vainikolo goes in for a great score.

That's a real warning shot, Andy, because Scotland have struggled

against New Zealand and South Africa, played well in the summer

tour, hammered Samoa and beat Australia. Look at the shell shock

on some of the faces. This game is not lost, a try gets it back. But,

this is Apikotoa, one of the architects of this game. Tongans in

the crowd excited as they should be. Fangatapu Apikotoa with the

conversion, looks like he's missed it to me. So it is a three-point

game with 13 minutes left. Let's have a look at this try again. It

is the back row combination, Latu and Vainikolo, look at this, good

score. Good score. Big moment for Tom Heathcote who has just come off

the bench. He needs to make sure Scotland can win this game in the

last 12 minutes. Heathcote did well. He just got it to that ten yards

and no Morsi. Emp tus now, whatever you do don't go. And Heathcote is

This is a big moment for him, Tom Heathcote as you say. Doing a

degree in politics, played for Scotland, because his father was a

Nimrod pilot, born in Inverness and playing for Bath, and you know him,

because, you're a Bath man yourself, Andy. His parents, I was at the

he was born in Bath. That's a big call, taking someone on untested to

try and turn this around for Scotland. Three points down with 12

minutes to G you bring in untried man to get Scotland to have

Inquisition. And Denton too, you have Tongans with a strong arm. If

they can do that, oh, they pulled him back for another penalty. Side

entry. It is a very difficult call. That isn't it, what you try to do S

wheel - is wheel a maul. They spotted a penalty for Scotland.

Let's have a look at this. It is held up there. You got to enter a

maul from the side. He comes in from the side. Is this another?

We're watching it live. There's a lecture there, has he a yellow card.

I think that's a tough call because he ran in from behind and jumped on

the group. I disagree, that's the second penalty he's given, that's

from an couple laigs of penalties. Let's look at that, that's not from

the rear. It is from over the rear most route. Now here's a massive

moment for young Tom Heathcote. Here he is. On his debut. Can you

believe this, on his debut. To draw this game! Well that was a fine

thump of ball. It just dropped short though. There you can see,

clearly above, ten minutes left or so. Tonga will be 14 men for that

ten minutes. Scotland have to try and beat that. He will be

disappointed with the contact because he has the legs to get from

there. It was from the ten yard line. It was right direction.

that victory. Scotland have devastated, probably the worst

That's a defeat, three defeats in the Autumn internationals, chance

Scotland, but didn't take it? Shellshocked to be honest, really

disappoint, the chances were there, we didn't take them. We said at

half time the Tongans were structured, and looked more

dangerous, gutted for the guys. feel the pain don't you, Scottish

players, absolutely gutted? Well they are yeah, but, it is difficult

to watch, it is too late, no point, their chances during the game,

certain skills let them down, things have to change, they should

be fiter and stronger, but it didn't show tonight. And really

difficult to watch. Really upsetting for the supporters, there

was a great crowd at Aberdeen, and I'm afraid there has to be changes
