Autumn International: Scotland v Australia Rugby Union

It has been a crisp, clear but cold day here, and you would imagine the

atmosphere inside has been icy as well. It is not nice eating nail in

international rugby. -- being nail. We could not get a foothold in the

game. We got punished twice for bad errors. Interception gives him the

try. You give a team like South Africa have a chance and they will

take it. He doesn't get there. He will score. What a try. They took

the opportunities that were given. Here comes the dive. Carbon copy

once again. It was poor execution and we acknowledge that. South

Africa, 28 points-0. We know what we are up against at the weekend.

Not so much heavy defeat as heavy drinking. There coach waited a week

and they have to head out the punishment after a late-night

drinking session in Dublin. Six players suspended and one and after

a dangerous tackle against the Irish. It is a numbers game for

Australia. Welcome inside Murrayfield. You can see the light

have literally just gone up, because they like a firework and festivity

round in this series. There is a band of fans to you can hear behind

me. It seems and incur the last after the performance last week. Get

maybe I am being cynical, but read trying to send a message of

urgency? You have to deal with it. We have dealt with it and had

suspensions. They thought it through and decided to punish the players

for this game. The players will have a chance to show as they are not

second rate. There was that tip tackle. This is in Australia --

opportunity for Scotland. I think the key area for Scotland today will

be the contact area. That wasn't my honey bear, going down. -- that was

my honey bear. Scotland have not had too much time to reflect. You have

had a closer look at where you felt Scotland did not take their chances.

At all levels you get opportunities, and last week, Scotland did not make

any line breaks. If you do not make a line breaks and you are unlikely

to score tries. The opportunities were there. Jackson could have let

the ball go that he decided to go. Get the ball back. It is presented a

little bit slowly, but the South African defence has not organised

itself, so the opportunity is still there. There is Lamont. It is five

against three. Just let the ball go. I suppose they did not have the

comedic case in. Pass it, pass it. There is an overlap. Straight into

touch. Tonight's outside half, Duncan Weir, somebody call the ball

made is available. They should be shopping for Duncan to pass it. --

shopping for Duncan to pass it. The ball should have been caught there.

Let's have a look there. Five changes from South Africa. Where

will they win it tonight? You can see, Ryan Grant comes back. A

difficult night last weekend but he will play well today. A big

opportunity for LaMonte again tonight. Hamilton and Gilchrest on

the second row. And Dave Denton and Kelly Brown. And you fly half,

Duncan Weir. Nick De Luca I will bring some good work. In the back

three, Sean Lamont, Sean Maitland and Tommy Seymour. It's perhaps one

of the problems -- is perhaps one of the problems that the only five

players there who last beat Australia in 2012, that was June

2012, that is only a year in six months ago, so do you expect more

consistency from a side to push forward and make progress? A good

thing to do is to give the young players as much experience as

possible. Is there a different mindset when you are facing the

southern hemisphere? Is it -- is it a different feel in the squad? It is

different. These are Friendly's, to be honest, but it is a good

opportunity for the players to take on the southern hemisphere. The

Australian site is very different today because of those disciplinary

issues last year. How might Scotland exploit those weaknesses? The front

row did incredibly well against Ireland last week, particularly

Slipper, who got stuck into Ross. Stephen Moore is a great

international poker who likes -- poker who likes supporting. Rob

Simmons, very versatile. The back row, the Golden boys, Huber and then

knowing. These are magicians. Watch how Quade

Cooper takes the ball right up to the Scottish defence. Harris and

Leali'ifano will do great today because they are great footballers.

You've got some paste here, particularly with Feauai-Sautia. He

gives away but he also steals. He is going to be dangerous. He gives away

the penalties, but he is going to be key today, I think, because he has

played against the best in the world, but Cooper is old-fashioned.

He is elusive and very brave as well. He gets the ball quickly. The

change for Scotland this week, Scott Johnson said he always intended to

do that. Where can Duncan Weir exploit the Australians and how will

this gameplay out? The teams come out there. He had looked really

sharp in recent games. He is going to try with a good support play to

do that tonight. They will miss the likes of Nick Cummings. They have

scored 11 tries against England so far on this tour. They really have

informed the way that a way, the style. I think McKenzie has done a

great job. He realised they might not have the skill set to tighten

up. I cannot wait to see Cooper. He has been in great form. Those are

one of the -- he is one of the players who has been brought back

the fold. He knows how to handle him. He is a bright rugby player who

excites everybody when he is on the field. It is great that he is

playing today. What is it like for a Scotland player to come out in these

Autumn Internationals? We have had a great show, the lights are down

now. Fireworks are going. It is fantastic. As Colin have to use this

to their advantage. -- Scotland have to use this to their advantage. They

have to use this atmosphere and drive them on. Jim Hamilton is about

to come out for the 50th time as a Scotland player, a proud moment for

him and his family. His son is three years old and is one of the mascots

today. He is going to come out with him today. It is a big day for him

today. He will be big in the contact area. Jim is a very proud Scotsman.

Showing their appreciation. It is hard in the dark to know where

you're going. Believe me, I am trying to present his show in the

dark. There is on the way this day will be truly memorable, and that

will be in Scotland can get that third victory in a row.

I have to admit that they can and did game slightly. There he is, JJ

A Saturday night full of colour and noise. Entertainment before kick-off

has never been a problem here. The supporters of Butland will be

looking for something to cheer. Tim's Wensing dropped out and

Gilchrest comes into the second row. -- Tim's Wensing will stop it is

speedy and Denton in the back row. The back line may have

underperformed against South Africa, but when Tommy Seymour passed a...

Four Australia, it is simple. Michael Huber is a troop inside. --

true open side. Inexperienced in midfield. Fullback -- the fullbacks

are just about as good as it gets. Richie Gray has dropped out

completely. Keiran low could make his debut. The lights armour solely

on the referee from South Africa. He was their part of the side that

beat Australia down in Newcastle, when Strokosch banged heads. Injury

was rather serious but both sides looking here for the tournament,

Scotland for their efforts against South Africa last week, Australia

for their errant ways and for that wet and windy defeat on home soil

last year. Scotland... They are going for three in a row against

Australia. Kelly Brown back to lead the side. .

Full and very nearly a full house inside Murrayfield.

Quade Cooper will say he will go when he is ready. Scotland against

Australia here at Murrayfield under the lights on a Saturday evening and

all the atmosphere. It can Scotland keep that noise going in the early

exchanges? South Africa snuff it out early on and Usher already on

Australia. -- pressure already. Did it go forward? Still therefore

Australia, the Waratah 's fullback, Folau. Jim Hamilton comes through to

get that ball and early exchanges, fighting on a Saturday night is fine

according to the song but it will be a penalty to Australia. Great

atmosphere here at Murrayfield pre-match. Scotland turn the ball

over and it has been flat and Scotland last week did not get a

foothold in the game at all for the first 20 minutes. They have the ball

and gave it away and they allowed Australia to get a field position

and then the penalty has given them a position to allow them to get

three points. This sloppy, no control over the ball and they gave

the ball to Australia. They put pressure on the tackle contest and

that is where Australia will be strong. Jim Hamilton coming round

the side am giving a silly penalty away. A silly penalty which maybe

punished. No real trouble in terms of distance

for Christian Leali'lifano. And no wind to speak of delay at all. They

do not like the building at Murrayfield.

-- they do not like the booing, but lots of people not able to respect

the message. It is good and Australia would be first three

points. Australia with the brighter start. The next few minutes will be

very important for Scotland. Get a good restart and a couple of good

repeat sets and put Russia on Australia. -- but pressure.

We talked about the crimson Reds, locks in partnership, Rob Simmons

and James Horwill. They will accept that gratefully, the scrum,

Scotland. The scrum last week was OK, the lightning did not fire at

all in the first have to Scotland have got a good chance to get some

play. I don't think Scotland had the ball or get into the South Africa 22

until the 32nd minute. They have got a chance within the first four. I

For so long, an area of real concern for Australia but there is a feeling

just with that Ireland game last week that the scrum was pretty

looks around and sees Jim Hamilton. Brought back for the penalty. This

is what they did not have last week, a chance to settle in. You really

need to get that. Get a foothold in the game and get some pattern. A bit

scrappy there but at least Scotland got a chance there. Suddenly 3-3 is

an awful lot better than it was last week if they get this. A couple of

guys have got some good carries. When you see the tackle contest

here. Australia lying on the ball, not rolling away, it is important

that the referee keeps that going throughout the whole game. Looking

at that in particular, the back row for Scotland without a true

openside, they have got three big rise in their and they will be

looking at that with Michael Hooper for Australia who is a true out and

out jackal. Greig Laidlaw to draw level for Scotland. Through it

goes. It is good that the referee is penalising Rob Simmons there. The

referee has made his mark straightaway.

Familiar music when Scotland score, it wasn't familiar at all last week,

it was not heard. I don't think Quade Cooper got the

contact that he really wanted there, but it got to touch. I think Sean

did not have his best game last week, he needs to step up, I have

been really impressed with him though. The line-out did not work

for Scotland last week. And abbreviated one here, Laidlaw has

it. They had a think about it there and

perhaps butterflies in the brain. The referee said no, and he still

went round. That is what frustrates you as a coach, when players do

that. A hand of apology, a stupid mistake from Kepu and gives chance

for a clearing kick which just goes over the Brumbies winger. A big game

for him. This is a chance for him to get his first start and you can see

Kepu, he asked and the referee said no, and he said he would take it

anyway. "That is the way I roll". A kick measured to perfection.

Denton is a useful man to have in a crash ball. AdVantage to Scotland?

An outstretched man from the referee and blue shirts arriving.

Carried in by Grant Gilchrist, within five metres. Hamilton is

brought down but Scotland with far more threat early on here. A little

fumble here so back they come for the penalty. Scotland want the ball

quickly. Maitland in the heart of that and

Horwill. What a difference a week makes. Scotland have got a real

attitude. Trying to get in from the very start. We did not see this from

Scotland from the beginning at all last week. A great first ten

minutes. That is what we need to see from Scotland. For the fans who have

come back this week, the first two line-outs that we want, Scotland has

lost five out of six. He went through the gap there and then

Scotland are on the front foot, a quick all here and then Denton takes

the big hole in. Exactly what you want. Depth and pace and a good leg

drive. This is where the penalty was considered because Mike Harris was

not rolling away quickly and it should be another three points for

Scotland. Jim Hamilton on his 50th cap. Started brightly indeed. Lots

of options at the moment being explored by Scott Johnson at the

moment, none more so than the second row. There is real depth there.

Greig Laidlaw for the lead. Scotland lead, a rather uncertain start from

Scotland but they have come roaring back into this game. The referee has

made his mark straightaway, penalising people in the tackle

contest, he wants you to roll out the way, which team will start

listening to it? What a difference a week makes.

Certainly judging from the performance of Scotland but also the

atmosphere within Murrayfield. Laidlaw is shaping to box kick down

the line. Archie goes and Israel Folau is there. He is a dangerous

man, the ex-rugby league tie. That was a relief kick from Laidlaw -- a

really good kick. Good yardage will stop Stephen Moore Failte trailer

has been very impressive against Ireland, position for Scotland

nearly 80%. In attack it has been good and

defence there is attitude now as well. That was missing last week.

The fans want to see the guys in the blue shirts having real attitude.

Maitland, De Luca, Taylor, they are all looking for it.

John Beattie passing his father, and you can properly get more caps these

days with more fixtures but his father, John, very pleased with him.

Does this tell you something about what they are looking to do all they

are a bit concerned about their scrum?

Jim Hamilton, barking away and it just comes down, Rob Simmons they're

frustrated. A loose pass from spieler eight

macro. The terrier, Greig Laidlaw, putting them under pressure and that

is what you want -- a loose pass from Leali'lifano. Not the right

decision here, Scotland could have run that that as it turned out,

through the bad pass, it means that Scotland have got the line-out. I

poorly said it was Leali'lifano, it was Israel Folau with the loose

pass. Penalty to Australia.

There you see the strength of Hooper. Great balance. He turns that

ball over easily. Scott Johnson has talked about Australia needing to

play with a seven. I think Scotland need to look at playing specialist

in this position. Kelly Brown is a good player, but he is not a number

seven. Sometimes it is easier for the seven to stay out of it. This

one just flung back by Rob Simmons. And it comes to Feauai-Sautia.

Queensland Reds winger. He has just turned 20. Moore once again. The

pitch being excavated. This time it is taking in by Joe Tomane. Carried

on by James Horwill. And all Australia -- penalty to Australia.

The Australian players made it clear and Gilchrest walks back in a guilty

fashion. He led Australia against the Lions.

Now just one of the foot soldiers. Scotland is defending really well.

The tackles have got to start to roll away a little bit quicker.

Scott Johnson's lack of expressions. The wall is not getting punched

nearly as much as it was this time last year. John was such a funny

man. He is a real happy man. Yeah, he looked it! As opposed to the last

coach. Always smiling on the inside. The chance for Australia to draw

level. Did not get hold of it at all. The

clearing kick is good and the chase is on. Israel Folau keeps it in

play. Quade Cooper thumps it straight down field.

Interesting to have another look at that. Maitland have got so much pace

but has not had a chance to show it of late. Duncan Weir likes to shoot

them low. This one taken on by Feauai-Sautia, the youngster.

Here is Cooper. A bit of tennis once again with Maitland. That in that

passage of play. -- ends that passage. He was met with a decent

challenge by Quade Cooper. There we are. It was for Quade

Cooper coming through Maitland. The Argentinian coming in to give

instruction. It was a late tackle. I saw the flag go up and then it was

taken down. I think that was quite a good decision by a referee. See what

developed. He follows through on it. He knows what he is doing. That is

deliberate. Family. That could even be a yellow card. I thought he was

going to get up and give him a hug. Merry Christmas. Apart from anything

else, it has given Scotland a very good position, because they got the

penalty. And Duncan Weir has really good range on his goal kicks. This

is in his range. He is not the biggest beast, but Laidlaw is just

as good as Chris Patterson was. Limited range but deadly accurate.

Again we are can get a good thump. -- Duncan Weir. Penalty of course

from where the kick was taken. But not they range this time. Not

his best strike either. Here comes Maitland again. Plenty of

time on the ball for the winger turned fullback in this game.

It is a risky one but it finds its way to Duncan Taylor. Up over the

ten mates or line -- metre line. Penalty to Australia. Little trip

through for the chase. Nick De Luca, -- Nick De Luca. I do not think

there was another scrum half in world rugby that would have done

that. Number eight. De Luca has lost position. Hands on the ball. You

would not say it was on. That was a really smart play there from genii.

Had to put the chase through. What Scotland did well really well early

on -- did well really early on, Duncan Weir just tell over really

easily. -- fell over with easily. James Robson. The man waiting to

replace him will be Patrick Arthur, the hooker. That will be a big loss

in terms of settling the bold and the strength. On comes Pat

McArthur. I do not think we will see Ross Ford comebacks, and from a

development perspective for the depth of Scottish rugby, it is not a

bad thing for Pat McArthur to get on and get a 60 minute game here. The

second row has a lot of depth. I wonder whether Australia will

start taking strums -- scrums. They could start to put some Escher on

the Scotland scrum. -- put some pressure.

It is advantage to Australia. Penalty coming should they need it.

My caries caries it. -- Mike Harris caries it.

They are making ground here. The advantage is over now for Australia.

Scotland have weathered that storm. There is the penalty. A couple of

penalties there. A chat is going to be coming. Australia getting really

quick ball. He will try to have one more word

but it is done. Australia had given the penalties away for doing that.

It is important he says the same thing to Australia as what he says

to Scotland. Whoever transgresses next will bear the brunt.

Did not do much, but it is by the letter of the law. You can see Dave

Benson comes in through this site. The fact he came in from the side,

the referee deemed the ball was not out. A penalty is considered at the

moment. Another chance for Australia and for Christian Leali'ifano.

This time he does have it and Australia draw level. It is a close

match and still plenty to play for in this first half. Everyone

enjoying it here. So much pressure over the last five minutes. There is

a difference between the two sides in the way they are attacking.

Australia are passing back inside to the different runners. Different

mindset. A little not forward. Australia have the knock on

advantage. -- a little bit forward. Getting hands-on there was very

important. Lamont, nearly. The ball was touched in flight and held at

the back by Cooper. Some strength by Joe Timoney --

Tamone. Lovely off-load from Israel Folau.

Beautifully directed into touch. Scotland are back just inside their

own 22. UCD ability of Harris to put it kick in. -- UCD ability. That is

funny boy Williams, just about. He is such a talent. -- Sonny boy

Williamson. Pat McArthur, replacement hooker,

looking for his men. I think Harris was dropped as he

landed. It is always important when you lift up, you bring them down as

well. The Scotland players let go of him. Apologies from Jim Hamilton and

Kelly Brown. That is a hefty one or Gilchrist. -- for. It was just a

straight jump and throw. There is one school of thought to say you

have got to back your throw and accurate technique. Ewing on the

right looking rather bookish. It is one tackle slipped, Israel

Folau goes through, the line picked and there is his danger and there is

the first try of the match. That was really smart play. They come back

the other way and a great inside ball to Folau. That looked so easy

when it came. A tremendous try scorer already, his 14th cap, nine

tries now. Gremlins coming back for Scotland from last week. They have

lost the two line-outs, going well so far and then back inside, Pat

MacArthur goes through the gap there. That is an area... And inside

the tens space. That as a missed tackle, he is there to make it. He

is but it is about access attacking forwards and how often do great

school -- skilful backs but forwards under pressure like that? I suspect

they will have to score some tries. The last two victories against

Australia have come without crossing the white line but they may have to

look for alternatives. Ryan Grant took it by himself there, Folau we

can easily. -- beat him easily. Telling it round, two ballpoints for

Australia and seven points, their lead. -- two more points for

Australia. They cannot allow Australia to have that phase of

play. He is a good runner when he gets going but I think Matt Taylor

will be defensively disappointed there. Especially coming from a

Scotland line-out. Ireland Paul -- Ireland's defence last week was

poor. Just a forward pass and it will come

back for that penalty. That was close. This time Scotland using good

play involving Jim Hamilton who carries the ball very well.

Australia are having a chat with the referee.

REFEREE: The last time they have the ball, you do the same, that is your

team's warning. The warning did, and Jim Hamilton has been pretty

sprightly in the loose so far. If you look here, that shows the

incident, coming round. This was the final pass, it was forward by a

distance. Sometimes they look further forward than they are. It is

all to do with where the hands go. Do they go backwards, and it is a

chance, straight in front of the posts. Getting up towards 40 metres.

Laidlaw does not miss too many and finds the centre of the posts again

and Scotland back within four points as we approach the halfway point.

That was very important for Scotland to hit act straightaway. -- hit

back. How will they deal with the restart?

Quade Cooper has dealt with it badly. Scotland try to come back but

they will have the scrum. Quade Cooper try to mix it up there

and got it wrong. Tommy Seymour fancied it and did it well and then

it was intercepted but did not take it. Mike Harris, Tommy Seymour

fancied his chances. Got away with it - just. That was a good catch by

Seymour. He had to attack that flowed. We have not seen too many

scrums so far. Such a ponderous affair now, this

scrum. We all got excited with the new bind

and the bit before it, you thought it would solve all the problems. In

my eyes, it should but we are still having endless time spent resetting

scrums. Last night, Wales, Tonga, so many in the second half.

Great of the body strength, Johnnie Beattie. -- upper body.

The advantage was over and just at the right time for Scotland.

Scotland cannot afford to have too many tackles but they have the...

They needed that, there were times there when Scotland just were not

using the ball as well as they should have done. They can take it

down a bit, have a breath, get it together and get it started again

from the line-outs. Scotland need to find some territory. It has been

played a lot in the Scotland half through the good kicking game by

Australia. Most of the play has been happening

in Scotland's half, although they were having a good share of

territory early on. Nobody there for Australia, taken

well by Duncan Taylor. And Scotland creep over the halfway line. A bit

of a scuffle of the ball, takes a few players out of the game and a

bit of space appears for David Denton. Advantage Scotland, offside

Australia, penalty. Jaco Peyper, the referee, said the Ben Mowen, as

Greig Laidlaw takes it... We will come back to that. Now Scotland do

have a kick at goal, because they have got another penalty. It has got

even worse now because Jaco Peyper gave Ben Mowen the warning and we

heard him say, "that is your warning". He has given to penalties

await and not had a word with him. A final warning now. Will they get a

written warning after this? That is disappointing for Scotland, that

should have been a yellow card. Smart play by Laidlaw. Kicking the

quick tap, out of the kicking range, he is now within kicking range. It

looks like a high tackle but it is a lot going in on a scrum-half who is

dipping his shoulder anyway. A slight change of tactics is

Scotland, kicked it a bit shorter, good work by Seymour to get that

ball back and that enabled them to get the territory they just got.

Almost identical to his last kick. And the result is the same, Scotland

back within one point will stop all penalties so far as it was in the

last two victories over Australia but they are playing well as we

approach our time. They needed to react to the drive from Folau and

they have done that well. The kicking which has worked, a really

important last few minutes of this first half for Scotland. The restart

is longer and taken by Duncan Taylor.

And through goes Johnnie Beattie. On his own looking to his side, he goes

to Sean Maitland. Lamont for the line... He cannot quite get there,

Maitland and Lamont, two flyers but still they cannot find the line. So

close, Scotland, to the try-line. And a raw now from Murrayfield, it

is held... Held. So close. They wait and line-up. The

Australian defence is strong. What a boost this would be for

Scotland if they can score at this point.

The chance gone and what is a chance it was.

The advantage was still being played, knock-on, risky play for

Australia as it came crashing through from De Luca, looked like he

might have scored but they are still playing advantage for that knock-on.

These are the key opportunities that Scotland have got to be able to

take. Close to the line, unfortunately the ball got slowed up

as they got posted the line. David Denton, some good carries, just saw

him drop it, a good tackle I James Horwill. What I can't believe, after

John Beattie... Sean Maitland, one of the quickest players and Lamont

did not back themselves. He has delivered so far, I thought he

should have pinned his ears back there because he has got more pace

than Lamont but great defence by Folau, he dragged all the way back,

did not overcommit, really good defence. And they showed good

composure, Scotland. They did not get white line fever but this is the

end and a knock-on as well from the earlier one and the Luca, no try.

Hooper did a great job. A great tackle by Folau. For all the world,

it looked like Sean Maitland would fly into the corner. Australia

working hard at the moment with the tackles made, the one trying of the

match at the moment. One minute to go in this first half.

It looked like Australia went early and they should have given the free

kick to Scotland. Australian and they have to be very careful here.

It is their ball, but in such a dangerous position. The scrum is, I

think, a mystery to many. Big moments in the final seconds of

this first half. Free kick to Australia is the decision. Unsteady

says the referee. Australia went forward on the hit, and it was that

that made it unsteady. It was Australia that created the

unsteadiness. That will be the final passage of play in this first half.

Cooper asks how long is left. The ball is out. Interesting second

half. When tried from Australia in this half. All to play for. -- one

try. There has been a lot of attitude and ambition. We have seen

a bit of class from Israel Folau. When tried on the one point in it.

-- one try, one point in it. Australia lead at the break.

A 50th cap for Jim Hamilton today. It was the kickers who kept the

scoreboard to get over. Laidlaw, Israel Folau with the only try of

the first half. Laidlaw again with the boots, taking its to 220.4

Scotland. -- 220 points for Scotland. The line-up problem last

week, it is pretty even in terms of tackles made. Australia have made a

lot more tackles and turnovers. Line outs are what Scotland are still

losing. Australia is preferring to buying out. Maybe they watched the

video from last week and decided that Scotland were to punt on the

line out. They are still in the game at

half-time. Greg Laidlaw has kept the scoreboard ticking. They are

competitive. The Australians have not been able to get away from

Scotland. Scotland worked hard in the first 20 minutes. It is a must

against Australia. A lot of pressure, and it is paying off. Yes

without they have created a few opportunities. It hasn't quite

worked out but I like the endeavor and the ambition. This has to play

on your mind. This evening's match is showing that the defence is

pretty much winning as a whole. If you hit and come at pace, you will

obliterate the defence. Get quick ball and the defence will not be

able to realign in time. We have seen Cooper and Harris kicking,

which has suggested a breakdown. We saw Australia looking a bit

different than last week, due somewhat to disciplinary issues. I

think Brian is doing very good. Benson is getting stuck in. The

difference between Scotland this week and last week is that they are

in the game. They have kept hold of the ball. They have got to be

competent that they can come out in the second half. They haven't scored

in this biggest victories against Australia. They have not scored a

try. We are hopeful for the next 20 minutes. Scotland's line out, you

can see how hard he is going to get in this position. The defensive line

there is pretty good. It is solid and coming forward. Look at Israel

Folau here. Scotland's defence line was good will stop Kelly Brown have

come up. A tackle against a world-class player. We talk about

communication with the Scottish team, you can tell that Israel Folau

might have been shopping at Cooper there. -- shouting. He shouts really

loud. He has just use his athleticism. Suspected forward pass

there. They did not spot it. It is a bit questionable for me. Let's focus

on some good Scotland play. Getting so agonizingly close to the try line

and yet it is just not coming. For me, it is just getting the support

they both come round. If Maitland had followed Weir, that would have

been a try for sure. This week, the line break is made by the support is

not there. It is not hard or direct or quick enough for Scotland and

Australia have realigned their defence. They have already conceded

the penalty said Davies three points of stop all teams know it is better

to concede three. -- so they lose three points. Cooper comes across

and gives a penalty away. Weir passes just forward enough, but

still they come back and get the penalty. Use the -- you see BD

there. Go for it, go for it. It is tremendously quick. I still think

Sean Lamont should have scored there. Maitland should have gone

right on both occasions there. He couldn't really expect him to get

over. Maybe he could have made it if he actually went there 100%. It is

easy for us here, but by slowing down and gives the defence an

opportunity. Use an attacker. If you go, what is the worst that can

happen? If you do not go, you would be wondering what you should have

done. Great initial break, good support to get there. Looking at

that half, there are two for me that were clear-cut opportunities to

score the try, and that has to be played on your mind. -- playing on

your mind. He cannot be thinking about it. You have to think of the

positives and move it on. The coach wants to concentrate on getting

support. On one of the breaks, the support was there, but it was quite

a way out. Last week, the Australian team stayed out on the pitch and did

their half-time talk on the ptich. They have gone in today. That is the

normal method. The worst thing about some teams is that they are not able

to change and they like to stay as they are. Mackenzie is his own man.

He has come out and disciplined his side from last week and he has just

made the decision to go inside. It will be a nice change, nice and

warm. Why don't we had up to the commentary box. There they are. What

do you think about Scotland's line out today. We said it was a problem

area last week. It is an area of vulnerability, isn't it? It was

looking good at first and then there were a couple back-to-back and they

just did losing it. It is a shame. Ross Ford was on and then he went

got injured. This was the one that led to the try. Technically, it is

illegal to take the line out from the outside arm, but the referee did

not do it and that led to the try. What Australia did was slowed down

They wanted to start the second half rightly and kick up the atmosphere

in Murrayfield. That line out. Wonderful chase and gather by Israel

Folau, and this is trouble for Scotland.

It goes wider than wide and they were waiting in the first row of the

stand for that one. We have talked about Folau, brilliant under Russia

from De Luca but look at the balance. -- under pressure.

Leali'lifano... He is playing to the blue line, not the white line! Years

a young player. A player of real talent. Once he understands the

pitch markings, he will be trouble! Spatial awareness is a very

important thing to have in rugby and I don't think he had it there.

Tim Swinson who felled a fitness test earlier this week.

Surely, a try, the celebrations are there and Chris, I think he scored.

They are getting onto the outside edges. And they are getting really

quick ball. It was a good tackle but I don't think he held him. The TMO

is Jeff Warren. So if a player is held in the tackle, he is not

allowed to make the second move but was he held? A great tackle so he is

not held so he's entitled to get to his feet get across the line. It is

a good score. That is really disappointing from Scotland.

Second try for Australia tonight in the second international try for the

scorer. They had passed and support. Good passing there, Quade Cooper has

a good part to play, a good angle. Almost a great try saving tackle by

Maitland. Australia have been trying to move the ball for a couple of

phases, then changed election so it isolates the likes of Jim Hamilton,

the forwards and allows them to attack him. Eight tough conversion

for Christian Leali'lifano. He likes to kill them and he does

not quite convert its the gap remains six points but two tries to

none for Australia. Good support, great timing of the past and a good

finish. -- of the past. Despite all the players being absent at the

moment through injury and suspension, Australian players and

being in Europe, they still have talented players who can score

tries. Not doing anything particularly fast

but controlling them very well. They have got an amazing list and

when you have not got massive numbers, they do extraordinary well.

They are used to playing with the ball in hand and running and

attacking. Lamont uses his strength. Still just there for Scotland. The

man infringing their was Michael Hooper. Still a bit 1-dimensional in

Scotland's attack for me. Pat MacArthur was good in the loose and

he has been good since coming on. Joe Tomane gets him off his feet,

but they are easy to defend. It is but Scotland have got a repeat set

so they were able to keep the ball, get good support and now they have

got the territory. This is an important line-out, this one.

The Scottish forwards are in no hurry to come forward. Scott Johnson

played for the Australian under 21 's.

A well worked move but then spilled forward.

Going long to the again. Good throw and Laidlaw coming through the

line-out, got into space but unfortunately we see here, moving

the Australian defence, great hole for label to go through and just

couldn't get the off-load away. -- great hole for Greig Laidlaw to go

through. Straight through there, the little terrier, Grant Gilchrist just

couldn't get it. It was the right decision. Ryan Grant is on for

Scotland, their first change of choice after the forced to change

with McArthur coming on for Ross Ford. Dickinson has been doing

really well for Scotland. He is established himself in the wake of

Allan Jacobsen's retirement as their first loose-head at Edinburgh.

A penalty to Scotland and I wonder if another talking to is coming

All the things they can check now, the TMO, the outcome of this should

be a yellow whatever, even if there is no punch thrown because it is

another penalty. Marie Lowe is holding him there, you can see he

punch. It is the top of the picture there, Moray Low is holding him, and

minutes. He was being held, trying to free himself by foul means. So

Scotland need to use the numerical advantage to get the first score and

try to use this for the next ten minutes. Does that mean now that the

number of penalties that could have required a yellow card, does that

now become white because it was foul play? Not at all, it stands. The

referee should go to a yellow. A chance for three points.

This is what will lift Scotland. The next ten minutes will be crucial.

He brings them around as well but round to the heart of the upright so

Scotland back within three points and Rob Simmons is of for the next

ten minutes and they will be big. He does not connect with the first but

he definitely gets the second. Well spotted to the touch judge.

The frustrations for a coach. When something like that happens off the

ball. We are just having problems with the referee's microphone so

Jaco Peyper is going to have some technical stuff administered.

Andrew, you mentioned a few minutes ago about the players that Australia

are missing. But Scotland a shot of a number of acts. Matt Scott, Tim

Visser, Alex Dunbar I have to say was really in line to be used for

the autumn internationals here. Definitely three or four first

choice players. De Luca has been strong defensively today. Israel

Folau with this first try for Australia, let's take a look back at

that in the first half. And this one for the youngster, not quite held by

Maitland and able to scrabble over. Scotland have not scored any but

they are still in this game and they have got the extra man for the next

Perspex here because it is the restart from having got the points.

Scotland have not learned what Australia's tactics have been. They

have been kicking all the cakes to the left and had a good chase. --

all their kicks. This is the side that Leali'lifano likes. With the

referee getting his microphone fixed, it has taken the temperature

Rob Simmons still off, a few minutes left and the then bidding -- on that

sin-binning. Genia, his clearing kick. Very good one. I am not sure

Maitland is going to last very long. He is hobbling around. He is not

happy after that last curve. It does not look great there, does it? I

think Max Evans would be the man to come on. I am just looking at the

Scotland replacements warming up. I wonder if Maitland comes off you'd

have three wingers playing in the back three. A shortened line out.

Good work by the Wallabies. Scotland on the line out is not quite working

again. It is the little things, isn't it? Take your line out. Use

the advantage. Get into faith play when you are going to find the

space. Scotland have been under real pressure on the ten metre line for

the line out. It is a shame that Scotland have not gone long, because

they have had success going long in the line-up. Sometimes that is the

easiest place to win the ball. That is competent, isn't it? I have not

really function. Everyone has got to be buying into the cause. I think

they are lacking a bit of confidence in the line out. Ready to go again.

The fun of the scrum to come on this very unsteady and uncertain surface.

into play scrum half. Scotland are almost getting in each other's way.

Denton lurking in the wider channels. Scotland still with the

man advantage but unable so far to make it big. You'll crest. --

Gilchrist. A little switch back into Duncan Weir. Plenty of ball here but

not making too much advantage over the gain line.

And a penalty to Scotland. They are just about in the range of Duncan

Weir. Scotland have mixed it up again. There were good angles being

run. Jim Hamilton gave a good angle again. Nick De Luca to Hamilton.

That is when Scotland needed the quick ball. The Captain gets in

there off his feet and penalised. 56,000 people in here this evening,

so higher than the match against South Africa. Certainly a better

atmosphere in terms of the Scottish performance. This is right on the

end of the range of Laidlaw, I think. This will be his last passage

of play and stop a big capital change. -- of play. A big tactical

change. It is low, too low. Scotland awaits

to make a change but it is a missed opportunity. They have to take these

if they are to have that third successive win. Simmons is coming

back and. Sitaleki Timani, and then Alexander. Horwill is going off.

Laidlaw is going off as well. Cusiter is on. Laidlaw has and will

things really well. He will be really pleased. -- handled in really

well. The key now is to get the pace into the game. Keiran Low is getting

ready to make his debut in the wings.

De Luca manages to off-load to his midfield partner, Taylor. Cusiter

complaining to the referee. Then Alexander. Australia have the

penalty this time. Scotland got slow ball. If you go to the wider

channels, it is important that you get quicker ball. Gilchrist has

taken a knock there. He has got good skills. He has had passes behind the

runners. He is a talented rugby player. And he has great body height

when he is carrying the ball. Certainly one for the future. Again

shows the depth that Scotland have any second road department. I think

he proves he is one for the present. He has got a real good future, but

he is performing international rugby tonight really well. Cusiter came on

last week, his first match in 18 months after all sorts of shoulder

problems. Scott Johnson seems to be trying to develop depth. He is

looking forward to the World Cup and Six Nations. Here, another chance

for Christian Leali'ifano. Just grazes the outside and Taylor

gathers it in. A kick which could have taken Australia beyond the

converted score player and on comes for his debut Keiran Low. They

Denton is going off. He has played well tonight. -- Dave Denton.

Hooper has been well watched tonight. Stephen Moore. Quade

Cooper. Flipper. This time to Sitaleki Timani. Stephen Moore to

his opposite number, MacArthur. Seymour is back there bouncing

awkwardly for Scotland. Scotland with the ball, but deep

inside their own 22. 80 macro just pokes at -- Cusiter just pokes it

over the top and puts it inside that 22. That was a good exit strategy

from Scotland. Taylor bought some time for the support to come back

and stay in field. Scotland are in position to kick. Not the longest

kick but just enough to see if they can disrupt the flying out. -- line

out. Australia are trying to punch holes

through the middle. Genia just off-load ships it to Stephen Moore.

Always dangerous when Australia get a few phases going. Through the

middle it goes. Cusiter is back there, and he will get to it. Great

play by Chris Cusiter. Also, good vision by Quade Cooper. Chris

Cusiter needed a lot of space to cover. A little while at Murrayfield

in terms of the noise and the atmosphere. Six points addressed. --

adrift. That is a good charge by Sitaleki Timani. Why'd it goes to

Scott Fardy. The ball is kept alive and in play. Simmons is back on the

field. Australia are making some ground. A little switch to Fardy.

Australia trying to use the different angles but those are

easily enough red. The Scottish tackles are piling in

now but this might be dangerous. The interception from Duncan Taylor, it

took the thump as he took the ball. Chris Cusiter decides to kick long

and that was taken easily enough by Feauai-Sautia.

Cooper having a tussle with Duncan Weir and he complains loudly about

that. Scotland back inside their own 22 again.

Another penalty to Australia. Becomes sent for Scotland at the

moment is that Genia is starting to run the show. They are not putting

as much pressure in the tackling contest. They are dropping off that

a little bit, they are having time to manipulate the space and Genia

does that with a smart kick there. This is Duncan Weir and Cooper.

Australia got the penalty eventually. He knew exactly what he

was doing but it is a risky strategy that Scotland are playing, playing a

phase in this, their own 22. This referee is hot at this. They have

moved it once and they had a good extra strategy and it did not get

the support in this instance. This is fairly straightforward for

Christian Leali'lifano. He missed it earlier on but Scotland are waiting

to make a few changes after this kick. Jonny Gray is waiting to come

on and Max Evans. A poor kick from Leali'lifano. He

likes to bring them round but that was a cock. Leali'lifano has not got

his kicking boots on, that is a 50% rate. Scotland must use that to

their advantage. This is a game that Scotland can win. Max Evans is an

Grant Gilchrist going off and Jonny Gray is on for him and Will Genia is

off. A slab of hands with Gilchrist. A bit of a reshuffle in the Scottish

backline. Nic White passes to himself and then

decides to give it to somebody else. Scotland have the penalty this time.

Great work from Jonny Gray. Doing pressure on the tackle. But you'd

know what, both coaches have made big tactical decisions at

scrum-half. When Greig Laidlaw was coming into the game, and then Will

Genia has really bossed things around and he has just been taken

off. Big tactical decisions by both coaches. It changes the whole game

and it makes the whole game different. He is more of a kicking

scrum-half, Chris Cusiter. Scotland get themselves some possession and

those missed kicks from Leali'lifano have kept them in it. The line-out

is starting to function for them. A good defensive shot from Australia

there. Chris Cusiter is given the order by

the referee and Johnnie Beattie frees himself.

Scotland are prodding away but not making great ground at the moment

but the pace has kicked up a little bit.

Was he in touch? No so it will go dead and a bit of life in the

Scottish backs now. Australia have lifted the hits. Welcome to

international rugby! My goodness. But he did get the ball back. Bad

decision here, he is entitled to touch, and maybe you have got to

chance your arm but as it turned out, it is a 22 for Australia. They

are juggling it around at the moment. And the crowd boo a little

bit which they are entitled to do. The pace seems to have lifted from

Scotland a bit. The little tap forward just at the

end there. The bench has made an impact. Dickinson, Moray Low, Chris

Cusiter, they have all done well. Jonny Gray, what a difference. He is

coming in in a different situation to last week. He did not stretch for

it and that was a shame because that was good way by Scotland. You can

hear the crowd when Max Evans gets the ball, he is a very dangerous

player when he has come on. White actor not quite the same size as

Richie Gray, perhaps he is still sprouting. I spoke to Alastair

Kellock, we have seen him come through the ranks and he really

rates him. He understands the line-out as well so he's a great

second row player to have. The tackles that have had to be made by

Australia, and Scotland have given them back, 110 tackles made by

Australia, 74 Scotland, and Scotland have been moving it around through

phases of play but looking for the incisive passage of play. That last

one was worth about 40 on its own. After the last scrum where there was

foot up and feeding, interesting to see what will happen at this one.

Hopefully Scotland can put some pressure on it. We like to have a

look at some of the feeds that occasionally get penalised. Stephen

Moore will put his foot forward literally as the impact goes.

Quite often that happens as well, "just the pitch" says Jaco Peyper.

The curse it nematodes. Roundworms, that is what they are. I

am told they don't like garlic. They put Gali dilly macro garlic spray on

the pitch. -- they put garlic spray on the pitch. This match is still up

for grabs. Will Genia is dictating the pace and he is now off and Nic

White, the Brumbies scrum-half is on.

They are eating up time with this. It is, but this is feeding the

scrum. And this movement now creates a short side for Australia to attack

as well. This was almost looked by the nose. We stressed this last

week, it is like the line-out, the ball does not have to go right

down, just down the street channel. You look at them and you wonder why

they bothered with this needing for the new system. It is on both

sides, it happens, every team does it.

It bounces awkwardly for Maitland but he took it and comes forward. To

Lamont. Kelly Brown they're running interference so that is a straight

penalty for Australia and it might put this game beyond reach because

he can kick this. I think Maitland was right but he is even calling for

it. He is looking down himself, ball on one hand, not looking to pass,

that was a bit selfish. I do not have an issue with Kelly Brown

there. Scotland work hard to get back behind the ball there. That

might be the kind of low they don't need. Leali'lifano has not kicked

well so far. You can always tell from the crowd when they feel it has

moved away from Scotland because the wave ripples around. A good crowd

tonight but the best majority of them would dearly like to see a

Scottish victory and it may be slipping away now. This kick is

right on his range. With the heavy conditions but still a tough kick

for him. It is wide again and they had

scratcher for Leali'lifano. -- a head scratcher. There is Al McCalman

-- Ben McCalman coming on, Scott Fardy coming off. These next five

minutes will be big. Australia piling into the Scottish

have again that Scotland have the penalty this time. Well done, Kelly

Brown. A really good turnover. He has played well tonight. He has

really slowed up the Australian ball and played some very good tackles.

Scotland are still in this game. It is going to take a converted try.

Big line out again for Scotland. Jim Hamilton was there. There is Keiran

Low. A little switch to De Luca. Duncan Weir again. Israel Folau gets

his kick away. The chase was good and Scotland will have the line out

inside their 22. Just over three minutes to go. A line out deep in

Australia's 22. Can they get the try that could intentionally win this

game? What a lying out it is. A change being made by Australia. They

are bringing on Saia Fainga'a to replace Stephen Moore, who has

played well. Can they win for the third time in a row against

Australia? They need the ball. The ball is lost at the line out. With

it perhaps the chance. Australia have the penalty. It is a penalty to

Australia. They are going to clear for touch with me quite. Still six

points in it. -- with Nic White. Tried -- time to do man of the

match. Israel Folau scored the first try in the first half. He has had a

huge influence on the night's game. He is an outstanding player and he

is the man of the match. Australia take in that line out through

Simmons. Jim Hamilton having a good title there. The final two minutes

of this match. Very good defence of the ball there. Scotland have one

more opportunity. A lying out that moments again -- a lying out that

moments ago they did not have. What is to be done here? They just keep

the ball and keep going. Make sure they execute their skills. If they

give the ball away now it is game over. They will have to do something

they have not done recently in -- easily in recent seasons, score a

try. Australia are trying to shove things

sideways. Johnny Gray reversing at the front. Scotland getting a bit of

a drive on. It is a shame this was not being done in Australia's 22.

30 seconds of this match remaining. Lamont thinks about the rhino from

Cusiter but carries it himself. -- the run. A penalty to Australia will

end it and seal victory for the Wallabies. What a performance by the

Australian captain. He could not get taken off the ball. The clock is

red, the match is over. A chance missed by Scotland. The game was

there for the taking. Australia wins. It is about having composure

when you get inside the 22. Scotland were just not able to retain the

possession that they needed to put Australia under real pressure. It

was a better performance than last week. It was a missed opportunity,

because there were some and kicks in goal. They had a chance in the first

half but it did not quite happen to stuff they did not have the

composure to get across and it is a missed opportunity. -- quite happen.

A few options have been look at in certain positions come and it was a

step up against -- from their game in South Africa. I like the work of

the young players coming in. Johnny Gray was fantastic. They have

options. The thing that is exactly what Scott Johnson wanted to

create. He wanted to see what players could stand up to

international rugby. I think he has got a few more answers to that.

There are probably still some questions for some people. The bench

tonight made a real impact and I think that is really encouraging. A

number of first choice players injured who will be coming back for

the Six Nations. I thought Jim Hamilton stepped up today. I think

he had a really good 50th cap. Scotland's November internationals

come to an end. They look ahead to the Six Nations. Jim Hamilton on his

50th cap in a very lively game. That is the hopping cop. Two tries gave

them the victory. One of them was scored by Israel Folau, who is also

the man of the match. How much did you enjoy being part of that win for

Australia? It was a pretty scrappy game but we were happy to get the

win. Three wins in a row, and we will take that into next week's

game. It has been a tough week for the Wallabies, certainly with the

disciplinary action. Does the group feel they need to deliver something

previous lowest was nine in 1947. That puts it in some kind of

context. Ireland against New Zealand is tomorrow on BBC Two. The final

match for us in the series, next Saturday, Wales against Australia.

If Wales win that game, they will go above England in the rankings. Some

Let's look back at this game. Israel Folau, man of the match. They tried

-- the try and the try saving tackle as well. The statistics prove that

he had a game of real industry. It just shows you that he is a talented

kid. Just look at him. He is just brilliant. There is mailing going up

for the trophy. He has said that he has not been drinking the year. He

doesn't stay out late, does he? You cannot be dropped for a drinking

misdemeanor, can you? We will talk about Israel Folau at that longer,

but let's go back to Jill. As this one that got away from Scotland? I

think so. I think the effort was first rate. There was much to like

about it. We threw a couple of young kids on there. We can only get

better from here. We have to get the right people on the ptich.

Half-time, a point in it. To concede that try must have been press

trading. That is an understatement. -- frustrating. It put us under

pressure. Again, I am really pleased, and I am sick of being good

losers, if you like, but there is character in this team and I am

impressed with what is developing. Is Six Nations. What have you

learned over these last three games? Today we had a look at the young

kids today. They have three tests between them. A young hooker that

has come on. I cannot buy that experience. I am going to put

pressure on everyone in this World Cup. We will get the ureter in the

talented player. He has only been playing rugby for 12 months. Nine

tries. He has still got a lot of work to do. This is the second

score. There is lots of space there for

Australia to attack, but the key here... Look at the numbers that

Australia had to attack with. The key for me as Quade Cooper. He keeps

a smooth going. He has fantastic vision. He has the ball again.

Israel Folau was tackled but not held and was able to get back up and

get across and score the try. Batman, you would just pay money to

watch them. -- that man. 11 carries. Head and shoulders above anybody

last week. You see the impact that this guy has. You saw it in the

summer when he scored against the Lions in his first Test. He has had
