A big day for Scotland and a big day
for this man, taking charge of his | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
country for the first time as head
coach at Murrayfield. He knows this | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
stadium so well as a player, but new
challenges lie in store and after a | 0:00:41 | 0:00:46
summer tour which left the country
with plenty to look forward to. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:59
Samoa have chased everything. They
have hounded everything. Sheer | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
genius. The all Blacks so, so
impressive. New Zealand relentless. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:13
That is a wonderful try.
Beautiful from the Wallabies. Well, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:23
if you're talking X Factor, this has
it. Delighted. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:43
Well, it's a busy start to autumn
test rugby. We are at a dry, sunny, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:51
crisp, cold Murrayfield for this
one. Samoa the first test for | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
Scotland and New Zealand in the
weeks to come. It could be an | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
exciting series. Alongside me at
Murrayfield Andy nickle who played | 0:02:00 | 0:02:07
alongside the Scotland coach, a
former Scotland scrum-half. Dan who | 0:02:07 | 0:02:12
played many times for Samoa. We will
talk about off the pitch matters for | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
Samoa and Greg who would be out
there captaining Scotland, but an | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
ill-timed injury means you will
spend the afternoon with us. Guys, I | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
don't think we're over egg, the
sense of excitement is tangible. He | 0:02:25 | 0:02:34
has come into Scotland with a great
summer tour under his belt apart | 0:02:34 | 0:02:39
from the defeat to Fiji, but beating
Australia. It is a sell out today | 0:02:39 | 0:02:44
Andy and for the next two tests. You
expect for New Zealand and | 0:02:44 | 0:02:49
Australia, but not Samoa. It proves
what the whole match day experience | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
has been like. Greg has inherited a
side that won the last three games | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
at Murrayfield in the six nations
Gabby. There is almost 60,000 here | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
today which is remarkable. This is
going to become a more fres as it | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
was in the last Six Nations for
Scotland. Dan, we discussed, I said | 0:03:06 | 0:03:11
in your introduction it has been a
disappointing and difficult week for | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Samoa because of the bankruptcy and
the financial affairs for the | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
country and you have talked a lot
about that and we will tap into your | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
thoughts on that in a moment, but in
terms of getting on the pitch and | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
playing, are the Samoan players
ready? Have the distraction of the | 0:03:25 | 0:03:30
financial matter been a distraction
for them? It is a great chance to | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
put that behind you as a rugby
player and get on the field to do | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
what you're here to do. I'm
confident the guys will come with | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
the right mindset and rugby is a
great game to put your frustrations | 0:03:40 | 0:03:47
on the field. So I expect this to be
a really fiery affair. Of course, | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
you were involved in the British and
Irish Lions and didn't take part in | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
the tour. You have seen what has
gone on the camp and I know you | 0:03:56 | 0:04:01
would love to be out there is there
a change in the atmosphere and the | 0:04:01 | 0:04:05
tempo? I think Andy touched on it,
we won all our three home games in | 0:04:05 | 0:04:12
the Six Nations and leading into a
successful summer tour. I know how | 0:04:12 | 0:04:19
excited the boys are here to play in
front of the their home fans and get | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
the jerseys on. We will hear from
the man himself. He has been at the | 0:04:23 | 0:04:30
fore front of Scottish rugby from
his school days. Playing alongside | 0:04:30 | 0:04:36
him was Andy Nicholls. Who better to
grill him? I think the first time | 0:04:36 | 0:04:45
our paths crossed was in 1988. Who
would have thought almost 30 years | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
on, here we are I'm asking you
questions for the BBC and you the | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
Scotland national coach? I remember
that. I was in first year and you | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
were in sixth year. You were held
back a bit! There is five or six | 0:04:59 | 0:05:04
years difference between us. No,
there is not. I loved the game. It | 0:05:04 | 0:05:11
was a breakthrough game for me
playing against all the players and | 0:05:11 | 0:05:17
being part of the game now. Gregor,
if we go back to our playing days. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:24
You did your university degree and
you were working for the Royal Bank. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
All of us thought you would go down
a business route. When did you think | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
that coaching was going to be the
future? Back in those days the game | 0:05:32 | 0:05:37
was amateur. It was important to
have a second career. I worked for a | 0:05:37 | 0:05:42
year, 95 to 96 and then the game
went professional. I'm glad I did my | 0:05:42 | 0:05:48
university studies, but I really had
another ten years of playing just | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
professional rugby and I felt with
my experiences I had as a player, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
the coaches I had worked with, I
should have knowledge to give it a | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
go at coaching.
Gregor, his sixth try for Scotland. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:07
It's 13-13 and the crowd here, well,
they're just lapping it up. I got | 0:06:07 | 0:06:15
working with Edinburgh to begin with
in age group rugby and it was great | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
working one on one with them,
especially players in your position, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:27
young stand-offs, but there was part
of the initial coaching I didn't | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
enjoy and now when I look back, I'm
glad I went through that period | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
because I learned more about myself
and more about coaching, but I have | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
enjoyed the last five or six years.
You mentioned the coaches that you | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
played under. Who are the coaches
that you looked up to and who do you | 0:06:40 | 0:06:47
tap into any of that resource now?
Playing for a long period with Ian | 0:06:47 | 0:06:53
at Northampton.
COMMENTATOR: Townsend. With Scotland | 0:06:53 | 0:06:59
with the Lions was amazing. Jim
Telford. Jim was a great coach for | 0:06:59 | 0:07:05
me. They certainly helped my game.
They wanted the best out of me. And | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
that's been the same case since I
have been a coach and I speak with | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
them regularly. They're seeing
things in the game that we don't | 0:07:14 | 0:07:19
see. They are passionate about what
they do. You have got, I don't know, | 0:07:19 | 0:07:24
50, 60 years experience in the game,
so they're going to be very strong | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
in the belief of what will work and
what doesn't work. What is your | 0:07:27 | 0:07:32
coaching philosophy? Well, my
coaching philosophy is more than | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
just a game plan. You would love the
team to play. It's how you emplament | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
the game plan or how you shape your
week in terms of the training. I've | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
grown up and watched Scotland teams
be at their best when they take the | 0:07:45 | 0:07:50
game to the opposition, when they
play at pace. We had a fast game in | 0:07:50 | 0:07:58
the 80s and 90s that was successful.
You fast forward to the last couple | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
of years and it is similar dynamics.
We suited to hard work and bringing | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
energy in how we play. You have to
shape your week to bring that out | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
and that's what we are working as a
coaching group, but also a coaching | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
group alongside the players to make
sure that what we do gets that | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
outcome at the weekend. The reason I
say that is by the Friday, Saturday, | 0:08:18 | 0:08:24
the coach's role is much less
relevant than it is on a Monday and | 0:08:24 | 0:08:30
Tuesday. The players should be doing
the talking. They are the ones that | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
lead the training and lead it the
game. From my prospective, it's all | 0:08:32 | 0:08:36
about looking forward to seeing our
players play and looking forward to | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
seeing the game unfold. The way they
played against Italy, the way they | 0:08:40 | 0:08:45
played against Australia, showed
their ability and their confidence | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
to take on these excellent teams.
Fiji was disappointing. But it might | 0:08:48 | 0:08:53
be a valuable game for us in the
future. We might look back on that | 0:08:53 | 0:08:58
game and go, "Right, we did things
wrong as a coaching team." Certain | 0:08:58 | 0:09:03
players may not have been where we
wanted them to be and it has been a | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
motivator for a number of players to
go, "Right, that can't happen | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
again." We have Samoa who have been
a tough owe pont for Scotland and | 0:09:11 | 0:09:17
then looking beyond that, I think we
play every team in the top eight in | 0:09:17 | 0:09:23
the world apart from South Africa's
in the next eight months. What a | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
great challenge for us and we
realise that we have to be at our | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
best to beat the best teams in the
world. It has been a lot of fun the | 0:09:29 | 0:09:35
last 30 years. Go luck in the next
few years! It was a good chat and it | 0:09:35 | 0:09:42
was fascinating to hear his
philosophies and that will be the | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
key thing. You said we never thought
you would be a coach and now he is | 0:09:45 | 0:09:50
doing it, it seems the most natural
thing in the world, he brought his | 0:09:50 | 0:09:55
intell of electual capability to the
role of coaching. He is a great guy. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
He always has been. He has brought
those traits, the personality into, | 0:09:58 | 0:10:05
he has got intelligence and very
good emotional intelligence. The | 0:10:05 | 0:10:09
temperament was one of his real
qualities as a player and I think he | 0:10:09 | 0:10:13
has brought that into his coaching
career as well. He doesn't get too | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
high or too low. He sticks to what
he wants, what he knows, he has got | 0:10:17 | 0:10:23
a good philosophy and a good
understanding of what he is trying | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
to achieve and he stays true. It is
a real pleasure to really get in | 0:10:25 | 0:10:34
amongst them and what makes him
tick. This is a proud day for him | 0:10:34 | 0:10:39
making his debut at Murrayfield. It
is the first time we have had a | 0:10:39 | 0:10:46
Scottish home-grown coach since
Frank Haddon. I think everyone is | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
really excited to see what Gregor
Townsend can bring to the Scotland | 0:10:49 | 0:10:54
job. It doesn't seem two minutes
since he was running out as a | 0:10:54 | 0:11:00
player. The speed of his success has
been quick. I love the fact that he | 0:11:00 | 0:11:05
went out to see Roberto Martin
necessary because he wanted to talk | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
about transition from club to
country. He does have a real | 0:11:09 | 0:11:14
appetite, a thirst, for bringing in
new ideas. Have you seen that this | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
week in the camp? Are you beginning
to feel Yeah, he is forward | 0:11:17 | 0:11:22
thinking. He goes out there and
speaks to people and he is always | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
trying to learn. He was successful
at Glasgow. He has done a great job | 0:11:26 | 0:11:31
and you can sense the real hunger
for him to succeed at this level is | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
really driving the boys forward,
driving whoever it is he speaks to | 0:11:35 | 0:11:40
forward day in and day out and he is
getting the training up to how he | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
wants it and the boys are sited to
show that today. Ally Price said | 0:11:44 | 0:11:49
that the play book has gone up from
about six or seven moves to 20 and | 0:11:49 | 0:11:53
also he wants to play the quickest
kind of rugby in world rugby, that's | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
his aim. Has that changed the
dynamic at training? Well, it has a | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
little bit because everybody has to
be switched on and in terms of the | 0:12:01 | 0:12:05
players, the boys need to be real
switched on. If they put in more | 0:12:05 | 0:12:10
players, they will have to run them
well. It comes back to the | 0:12:10 | 0:12:16
fundamentals. Don't be too loose and
we should be OK. Thank you. Well, of | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
course, he had a few selection
worries. A lot of injuries for | 0:12:20 | 0:12:25
Scotland, but Gregor spoke to Sonia
a few moments ago. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
You are very familiar with this old
place, but what was it like arriving | 0:12:28 | 0:12:33
today, knowing I'm in charge of this
team? Yes, I probably didn't realise | 0:12:33 | 0:12:38
as I arrived. I was taking in the
atmosphere. It is great for our | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
players to see so many supporters
here. They will create a really good | 0:12:42 | 0:12:47
atmosphere today. We saw the best of
Scotland and the worst of Scotland | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
in the summer, beating Australia and
defeat to Fiji. Which Scotland will | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
stand up today? We will see. I hope
it's the former. We've trained | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
really well and the players that
we've selected are on form. But we | 0:12:58 | 0:13:04
also know that Samoa are a tough
side. They are very physical and | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
play at pace. We believe they will
move the ball a lot today. So we | 0:13:07 | 0:13:12
have to play our best rugby. Samoa
not without difficulties. Do you | 0:13:12 | 0:13:18
have sympathy? If they are in
financial difficulty, it is not | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
great to hear. Samoan rugby has been
one of the best places to play, one | 0:13:22 | 0:13:27
of the best teams over the last 20
years, a real challenge for | 0:13:27 | 0:13:33
oppositions and in the past Scotland
games have been close affairs. Good | 0:13:33 | 0:13:38
luck today. Thank you. Scotland are
down to their fifth choice loose | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
head. So the scrum will be
interesting today. A few headaches | 0:13:42 | 0:13:47
for the new young head coach? It
proves the strength and depth is | 0:13:47 | 0:13:52
there and that's something Scotland
have not had. It is not long ago, if | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
we were playing fifth choice, you
would be getting somebody out of the | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
stand. To have Darryl Marfo from
Edinburgh. When you look at the back | 0:13:59 | 0:14:11
line, there are so many injuries.
They have been key players for | 0:14:11 | 0:14:16
Scotland and you look at the quality
of the back line today, Scotland | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
have got, you can see there is real
strength and depth. Let's pick out | 0:14:19 | 0:14:25
Huw Jones who made his debut last
year in magnificent style against | 0:14:25 | 0:14:29
Australia. He spent a lot of time in
South Africa from the age of 18 and | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
came back and he is playing for
Glasgow. What does he bring to the | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
side and how big is his future in
international rugby? He literally | 0:14:35 | 0:14:39
exploded on to the international
scene with this catch and try here | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
against Australia this time last
year. What a bounce to get in about | 0:14:42 | 0:14:47
five minutes into your debut, wasn't
it? It was brilliant. He has got | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
more to his game. He has good feet
and he brought pace at 13 last year. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:58
It was a good balance. He has a
great partnership with Alex Dunbar. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:08
He is a really exciting player and
I'm delighted that he is back | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
playing. Man of the Match in the
Currie Cup a few weeks ago. How | 0:15:11 | 0:15:18
exciting must it be for the players
like Huw Jones and Alex Dunbar when | 0:15:18 | 0:15:23
you play your rugby with a back
line? It is a step up and a level | 0:15:23 | 0:15:29
and the boys will understand that
and the boys you've mentioned Huw | 0:15:29 | 0:15:33
coming in. He is coming back from
injuries. He played really well at | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
Currie Cup and some of the clips
there, if Finn can reproduce some of | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
that form, he has given him a
tremendous ball to play off. I think | 0:15:41 | 0:15:46
hopefully we can release the back
line and really exciting players. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
Tommy Seymour. It should be good to
see. We are getting on to Samoa now, | 0:15:50 | 0:15:56
Dan. It has been the story of the
week really the bankruptcy of the | 0:15:56 | 0:16:01
Samoan rugby union. The financial
handling of the second tier nation. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
Not an easy week to the build up to
this. Sonia spoke to the team | 0:16:05 | 0:16:11
manager earlier.
It has been a difficult week for | 0:16:11 | 0:16:16
Samoan rugby. How are the players
coping with it all? I have to tell | 0:16:16 | 0:16:20
you that we are very relaxed. The
spirit in the camp is really good. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:26
It really helps that Scotland Union
have really helped us a lot. They | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
have been really good hosts and
yeah, the spirit is really good. We | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
are ready for the game.
The country, the union, is in | 0:16:34 | 0:16:39
turmoil. Does that not have an
impact on the players mentally? | 0:16:39 | 0:16:44
Well, to be quite honest, no, not
really because the boys are here, | 0:16:44 | 0:16:49
they are focussed on the game and
you know they are so proud to | 0:16:49 | 0:16:55
represent Samoa and whatever is
happening back home, it's not | 0:16:55 | 0:16:59
affecting us, we are getting paid
and we are carrying on as usual. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:05
It's normal. Since the news broke
that the Samoan rugby union is | 0:17:05 | 0:17:10
broke, what sort of messages and
support have you had from people | 0:17:10 | 0:17:15
back at home in Samoa because the
sport is huge in your country? Yes. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
Well from back home, all the
messages are encouraging messages, | 0:17:19 | 0:17:24
you know. They keep on telling us
not to worry about it. Everything is | 0:17:24 | 0:17:29
going to be all right. Our
government has really helped us a | 0:17:29 | 0:17:32
lot. The rugby as a whole and world
rugby is there too helping and | 0:17:32 | 0:17:38
lending a helping hand and the
support around the Government as | 0:17:38 | 0:17:42
well, not just Samoa, but around the
world. People here are willing to | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
help. Which we are very happy, very
excited about and so thankful for | 0:17:45 | 0:17:52
it. Good luck today. Thank you,
we're going to win. He is putting a | 0:17:52 | 0:17:58
brave face on it. These are worrying
times. There needs to be a serious | 0:17:58 | 0:18:04
discussion about the funding of the
second tier nations. They can't rely | 0:18:04 | 0:18:11
on the gate receipts. It is time to
have a discussion, is it not? I | 0:18:11 | 0:18:17
agree. It is a sad situation with
Samoa, not surprising. We have got | 0:18:17 | 0:18:23
dominance issues that we need to
sort out within our home. The fact | 0:18:23 | 0:18:27
that the current wealth distribution
model sees us receive none of the | 0:18:27 | 0:18:33
gate tickets. 60,000 people here,
and possibly over 80,000 in two | 0:18:33 | 0:18:40
weeks at Twickenham and Samoa
receive nothing. We have a capacity | 0:18:40 | 0:18:45
of 10,000 people back at Samoa, you
can't price tickets more than £10 a | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
head and there is no money to be
made there. 15% of all professional | 0:18:49 | 0:18:54
rugby players come from the islands.
The world of rugby owes a lot to the | 0:18:54 | 0:19:01
small islands. It is time they paid
their price? This might be the | 0:19:01 | 0:19:06
catalyst for a discussion about it.
I think this is not about throwing | 0:19:06 | 0:19:10
money at Samoa because there has to
be a long-term sustainable solution | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
to not just for Samoa, for Fiji,
because I can't imagine they are too | 0:19:14 | 0:19:20
far behind Samoa, but all tier two
nations. World rugby as a whole, not | 0:19:20 | 0:19:24
just the organisation, have got to
really help to make the tier two | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
come up to as close to the level as
tier one as possible to make it a | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
global game that's really
competitive. As an international, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
you love facing the other nations,
don't you? This will be a great test | 0:19:34 | 0:19:38
for Scotland today. The perfect way
to start the autumn series. Every | 0:19:38 | 0:19:44
time you face Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, it
is incredible games. The World Cup | 0:19:44 | 0:19:49
was a tough test. They always play
with their hearts on their sleeve. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:54
We have to help these plaitions.
They have some of the best players | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
in the world come from the countries
we're talking about. As the | 0:19:57 | 0:20:02
atmosphere ramps up inside
Murrayfield and the expectation for | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
the new era is building, prodictions
for today. Anything other than a | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
Scotland win for you, Andy? Earlier
in the week, Gabby I was confident, | 0:20:08 | 0:20:13
maybe that's because of the turmoil
coming out of the Samoan camp. As | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
you see the quality of the
individuals that Samoa have, it will | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
be a real challenge for Scotland.
The game two years ago in St James' | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
Park was amazing before this man got
a try late on to win it by a couple | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
of points for Scotland, but I think
it will be a bit easier for Scotland | 0:20:28 | 0:20:32
today. I think they will play at
pace which means they have got to | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
have the accuracy. If we get that,
then I think they'll win and win | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
guide well. There is exciting talent
on the pitch today from Samoa? There | 0:20:39 | 0:20:44
is. Tim Nanai-Williams at 10. I'm
really looking forward to seeing the | 0:20:44 | 0:21:01
reserve scrum-half. He earns five
quid a week. Wow. He will play in | 0:21:01 | 0:21:08
front of 60,000 people today and I'm
sure he will do his family proud. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:12
Confidence high? Scotland are in a
good place. As we touched on before, | 0:21:12 | 0:21:17
returning back to Murrayfield, I
think Scotland can start well and I | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
think Scotland will win. Thank you
very much, guys. Let's get you up to | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
the commentary team as the teams
come out on the pitch. Our team in | 0:21:23 | 0:21:27
the box today are Chris Patterson
and John Bettie. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:36
COMMENTATOR: Thank you. Welcome to
Murrayfield. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:44
Samoa have lost their last four
internationals. Their worst record | 0:21:46 | 0:21:50
since 19.81. The beauty of
international sport, you can't | 0:21:50 | 0:21:57
predict the future unless you have a
lightening strike and it gives you | 0:21:57 | 0:22:03
335 way before Chuck Berry. And we
begin with a minute's silence. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:25
A stillness fell over this stadium
as we remember the fallen. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:48
And now the anthems. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:56
APPLAUSE
Please remain standing for the | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
Flower of Scotland. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:21
# O flower of Scotland | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
# When will we see your like again | 0:25:31 | 0:25:39
# That fought and died for | 0:25:39 | 0:25:45
# Your wee bit hill and glen | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
# And stood against him | 0:25:47 | 0:25:52
# Proud Edward's army | 0:25:52 | 0:25:56
# And sent him homeward | 0:25:56 | 0:26:01
# Tae think again | 0:26:01 | 0:26:06
# Those days are passed now | 0:26:06 | 0:26:12
# And in the past they must remain | 0:26:12 | 0:26:18
# But we can still rise now | 0:26:18 | 0:26:23
# And be the nation again | 0:26:23 | 0:26:27
# That stood against him | 0:26:27 | 0:26:30
# Proud Edward's army | 0:26:30 | 0:26:34
# And sent him homeward | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
# Tae think again. # | 0:26:38 | 0:26:47
Well, there is a huge crowd here at
Murrayfield. The pitch is bone dry. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:55
It's going to be one heck of a game.
Chris Patterson. Yeah, looking | 0:26:55 | 0:27:00
forward to this one. Good afternoon,
everyone. I think it will be quick. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:05
We heard Gregor and saying he wants
Scotland to play as quick as anyone | 0:27:05 | 0:27:11
else and in world rugby you have to
be disciplined and fit to play like | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
that, especially when you're playing
against a like Samoa who feed off | 0:27:15 | 0:27:20
mistakes and a real firecracker at
number 10. There is Gregor Townsend. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:25
He got off to a cracking start as
coach of Scotland in the summer. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:32
This is his first home game as head
coach. The Scotland team will face | 0:27:32 | 0:27:40
the Samoans pre-match. They will
have a huddle together. They will be | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
focussed, John, they will be
focussed and proud of their heritage | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
and ready to take on Scotland. Here
we go then. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:54
The words include, "Let's go to war.
Here I come completely prepared. My | 0:27:54 | 0:27:59
strength is at its peak. Make way
and move aside." | 0:27:59 | 0:28:12
APPLAUSE
Well, this there is the challenge | 0:28:51 | 0:28:56
and that's the task ahead of these
Scots. Much depends on how the | 0:28:56 | 0:29:02
Samoans play today. Tim
Nanai-Williams a genius at 10. The | 0:29:02 | 0:29:13
Scottish forwards are made up of
more foe and McInally. -- far foe | 0:29:13 | 0:29:24
and McInally. Barclay the veteran
and talisman. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:47
Now the Samoan forwards have an
uncompromising look. | 0:29:47 | 0:29:55
Lam and Alapati Leiua.
And the scrumming line out with a | 0:29:55 | 0:30:03
success at 75% average over ten
games, Scotland is closer to 100%. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:11
And the Samoan backs.
All eyes on Tim Nanai-Williams, | 0:30:11 | 0:30:17
cousin to Sony Bill. The referee is
Nic Berry from Australia, helped by | 0:30:17 | 0:30:27
George Clancy from Ireland and Simon
McDowell is the TMO. | 0:30:27 | 0:30:39
To Perez. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:57
By the Scots.
Gregor Townsend said he wants the | 0:31:09 | 0:31:14
team to play the fastest rugby.
Stuart Hogg supported by Price. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:25
Dunbar with a late hit. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:36
through. Tommy Seymour is after
this. | 0:31:47 | 0:31:54 | |
It is that man Stuart Hogg. A
devastating try by the Scots! Stuart | 0:31:54 | 0:32:01
Hogg inside the first two minutes, a
try for Scotland. That is really | 0:32:01 | 0:32:08
good game management from Russ
Wilcox. It all started from a | 0:32:08 | 0:32:11
turnover.
Darryl Marfo won the important | 0:32:11 | 0:32:15
turnover and Scotland went through
the phases. Not far through the | 0:32:15 | 0:32:22
strong Somoan defence and then the
chip through. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:28
Andrew Marr on his feet, this is
after three or four phases of good | 0:32:28 | 0:32:35
defence from Samoa.
Tommy Seymour as sharp as ever and | 0:32:35 | 0:32:39
then Stuart Hogg running that inside
support channel. | 0:32:39 | 0:32:44
He scores underneath the post.
A really important kick from Russ | 0:32:44 | 0:32:48
Wilcox.
The Samoan defence was strong. | 0:32:48 | 0:32:54
Scotland weren't getting in from
behind. | 0:32:54 | 0:32:59
The change from 14 to 15 and to
Stuart Hogg, with a try. A great | 0:32:59 | 0:33:07
start to the score.
Russ Wilcox is the most successful | 0:33:07 | 0:33:14
kicker in the Pro-14. He doesn't
miss many. | 0:33:14 | 0:33:26
-- Finn Russell.
Penalty for Scotland. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:50
Russ Wilcox's long range effort is
missed. | 0:33:50 | 0:33:57
Half escapes the tackle. White
jerseys surround him. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:11
Jones kicks this one.
Taken by Ah See Tuala. | 0:34:34 | 0:34:45
A good play by Lee Jones. Didn't
want to risk a penalty. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:55
Tyrell is in there. This is Tim
Nanai-Williams. | 0:34:55 | 0:35:02
A good break by Kieron Fonotia.
Scots' up quickly in defence. | 0:35:02 | 0:35:11
Turnover ball.
Taken well. Was he bundled into | 0:35:11 | 0:35:23
touch? Piula Fa'asalele with a
delicate pop to Jordan Lay. | 0:35:23 | 0:35:36
Out to this big number 8, Lamb,
cousin of Pat Lam. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:53
-- Lam.
You can see how the Samoans want to | 0:35:56 | 0:36:07
keep the ball in hand. Getting a
little bit of success in and around | 0:36:07 | 0:36:12
the breakdown.
Hamish Watson winning that turnover. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:16
Nic Berry, the referee is having a
word with the Samoan captain. Samoa | 0:36:16 | 0:36:29
won't be happy with that play. They
didn't kick. A tremendous bursts up | 0:36:29 | 0:36:35
the middle by the hooker. Jack Lam
was prominent. David Lemi, the | 0:36:35 | 0:36:42
left-winger was on hand.
He used to play at Glasgow Warriors. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:47
Some of the players may remember
playing with David Lemi. But Finn | 0:36:47 | 0:36:52
Russell started well. Two chip kicks
through all right. Trying to force | 0:36:52 | 0:36:57
the pressure on to Samoa.
Stuart McInally, the Scots have had | 0:36:57 | 0:37:06
an average of 95% line-out success.
This is the way that they will have | 0:37:06 | 0:37:11
chosen to tire out the big Samoans. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:23
Price with the educated left boot. | 0:37:24 | 0:37:35
Tim Nanai-Williams behind that.
Taken by Jordan Lay. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:53
The kick from Tim Nanai-Williams
that was forced there. Lee Jones | 0:37:55 | 0:38:00
forced into touch. I'm not sure if
it was what he was expecting. Maybe | 0:38:00 | 0:38:07
he expected it to be longer.
Perez to chase. They are not playing | 0:38:07 | 0:38:15
a hugely structured game. Whatever
position they fall into, they play | 0:38:15 | 0:38:18
well on the ball. Samoa are very
dangerous and difficult to defend at | 0:38:18 | 0:38:24
times.
Russell trying to chip it over. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:32
Intercepted by Kieron Fonotia.
You say that the Samoans are | 0:38:32 | 0:38:43
enjoying this unstructured game?
It's a good attack from Samoa. You | 0:38:43 | 0:38:51
can see how hard they are to defend.
The footwork is so good. | 0:38:51 | 0:38:59
The Scotland defence coach will be
asking players to get off the | 0:38:59 | 0:39:03
defensive line harder.
This is the full back, this is where | 0:39:03 | 0:39:08
the penalty came, not rolling away
quick enough. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:12
I think it is number 9, Ali Price.
The Samoans have opted to kick at | 0:39:12 | 0:39:19
goal. The way to shut down that
attack is to take the time and the | 0:39:19 | 0:39:24
space away from the attack. So
Scotland have to get organised | 0:39:24 | 0:39:29
quickly, then get off the line
before these passes. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:34
And this is Tim Nanai-Williams, who,
as we said, Sony Bill's cousin. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:50
He doesn't usually play stand-off.
This is his first game at 10. | 0:39:51 | 0:40:01
That one's going to drop short and
right. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:06
Russell just pulls that right foot
back and sends it lock. | 0:40:06 | 0:40:13
-- long. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:23
Out the back door.
It's a long advantage for Nic Berry. | 0:40:47 | 0:40:57
But I like to see that to promote
positive play. Again the Samoans | 0:40:57 | 0:41:02
finding time to get the ball free
and contact. | 0:41:02 | 0:41:06
Forcing Perez into touch.
This is an interesting decision for | 0:41:06 | 0:41:22
the captain Chris Vui.
That will please Matt Taylor, trying | 0:41:22 | 0:41:28
to get forward taking the time and
the space. | 0:41:28 | 0:41:32
But maybe jumping there a little too
quickly. This is where Samoa can get | 0:41:32 | 0:41:38
joy after the hard work going
forward first. Tim Nanai-Williams, | 0:41:38 | 0:41:47
having recently missed his first
attempt. It was difficult, it was a | 0:41:47 | 0:41:50
long way out. He will have to
refocus. A difficult decision for | 0:41:50 | 0:41:56
the captain, Chris Vui. Chris | 0:41:56 | 0:42:04
Tim Nanai-Williams, successful! And
to be fair, the Samoans have been | 0:42:06 | 0:42:12
playing good rugby. Their first
Scottish try. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:15
They have done. Most of the
possession and made good use of the | 0:42:15 | 0:42:19
possession.
Congratulations to Tim | 0:42:19 | 0:42:20
Nanai-Williams. That is not easy to
stand up so soon after missing in | 0:42:20 | 0:42:26
the first place. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:33
It will be a line-out to the Scots.
Quickly into mid-field. Russell, | 0:42:36 | 0:42:51
with that sliding ball to Jones.
Intercepted! Lovely delayed pass to | 0:42:51 | 0:42:58
How Jones. It just slid out of his
area. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:03 | |
That was a slick attack from
Scotland. Well defended by Ah See | 0:43:03 | 0:43:09
Tuala to read the final pass it
would have been a score by Tommy | 0:43:09 | 0:43:15
Seymour but Ah See Tuala reads it
and no more. | 0:43:15 | 0:43:17
A great pass. | 0:43:17 | 0:43:28
Taken by Ah See Tuala.
Actual -- Ben Toolis. | 0:43:36 | 0:43:48
There's a Scot down in the
mid-field. Toolis has a chance. | 0:43:48 | 0:44:00
Samoans counterruck on top, pulled
back for a penalty. | 0:44:00 | 0:44:07
Nic Berry... Not rolling away.
John Barclay takes a hit off the | 0:44:07 | 0:44:17
ball.
Number two just needs to get out of | 0:44:17 | 0:44:27
there much quicker. They are looking
at Alastair, Jack Lam. Difficult to | 0:44:27 | 0:44:34
call. Lam stands his ground. The
TMO... He almost does more than | 0:44:34 | 0:44:41
stand his ground. It's hard to get
out of the way. | 0:44:41 | 0:44:46
If he launches towards him in a
tackle position... We're looking at | 0:44:46 | 0:44:51
it again. Here it comes. It is so
flat to the line. I don't think Jack | 0:44:51 | 0:44:58
Lam can pull out of it. But he makes
more of a hit than he could have | 0:44:58 | 0:45:02
done.
Alex Dunbar, out for six weeks after | 0:45:02 | 0:45:12
a knee operation.
Came back against Leinster last | 0:45:12 | 0:45:16
Friday, only to be yellow carded.
Russell keeps the scoreboard ticking | 0:45:16 | 0:45:23
over.
It's an important three points for | 0:45:23 | 0:45:25
Scotland. They've not had a huge
amount of possession. | 0:45:25 | 0:45:33
After the try, Samoa have had good
attack, good possession, a good | 0:45:33 | 0:45:38
three points of their own. So that's
an important three points for | 0:45:38 | 0:45:42
Scotland.
. Samoa take their time before the | 0:45:42 | 0:45:48
game restarts. | 0:45:48 | 0:45:58
This front row of Jordan Lay and
Donald Brighouse standing the ground | 0:46:26 | 0:46:30
mid-field. Williams is popping up
all over the place. The blue jerseys | 0:46:30 | 0:46:34
are coming in. Perez wants it but it
looks like the Scots have turned it | 0:46:34 | 0:46:42
over.
Russell is knocked on. | 0:46:42 | 0:46:53
The Samoans have to work quickly to
get into position. The Scots are | 0:47:10 | 0:47:16
very well organised.
They are putting pressure on. That | 0:47:16 | 0:47:22
play causing all manner of problems
for the Samoans at breakdown. | 0:47:22 | 0:47:30
Taken up by Lay.
It's that open field running. | 0:47:30 | 0:47:46
Finn Russell attacking on the
left-hand side. | 0:48:05 | 0:48:08
A kick through to Jones! It's
carried on by Hogg. Was that ball in | 0:48:08 | 0:48:14
touch? Or is that his second try?
He's not sure. | 0:48:14 | 0:48:27
Everyone thought this had finished.
But Lee Jones kept going. Let's | 0:48:29 | 0:48:33
watch this again.
Well, really quick thinking. I | 0:48:33 | 0:48:37
thought that the ball kissed the
line and no more. It was the ball I | 0:48:37 | 0:48:42
was looking at... It's inside. Just.
That's a quick-thinking attack from | 0:48:42 | 0:48:51
Ali Price and Finn Russell with the
kick-through again. One more look at | 0:48:51 | 0:48:55
it.
The ball's crossed the line, hasn't | 0:48:55 | 0:49:02
it, John? I would say that Jones is
the 7s expert. | 0:49:02 | 0:49:17
I have a decision reline.
To Samoa. | 0:49:27 | 0:49:32
Having a word.
I think Scotland have been effective | 0:49:32 | 0:49:38
at the breakdown.
Scotland have been disrunting | 0:49:38 | 0:49:43
Samoa's possession.
With the last three games, the | 0:49:43 | 0:49:48
line-out success has been 75%. Over
the top. | 0:49:48 | 0:49:59
Pting Samoa's possession.
With the last three games, the | 0:50:12 | 0:50:14
line-out success has been 75%. Over
the top. | 0:50:14 | 0:50:19
You're talking about something, and
they have the line-out under way. | 0:50:19 | 0:50:23
The only place to speed a game of
rugby up is on the line-out. | 0:50:23 | 0:50:29
When the ball is off the field. You
can't really run any quicker, you | 0:50:29 | 0:50:35
can't see what the defence will do
but with the line-out, the ball is | 0:50:35 | 0:50:40
quickly tapped in. That is a way of
bringing tempo to the game. | 0:50:40 | 0:50:53
If they get possession from here, it
looks like they're going to attack. | 0:51:01 | 0:51:08
That's a good first shove by the
Scottish scrum. | 0:51:08 | 0:51:12
Scotland have over the last ten
games had a scrum success of their | 0:51:12 | 0:51:17
own put in of nigh on 100%.
Which is refreshing. That means that | 0:51:17 | 0:51:23
they are treating it as a tool to
get the game up and running. | 0:51:23 | 0:51:37
Trying to manipulate the scrum.
Helping defenders out wide. | 0:51:37 | 0:51:43
That was the new loose head prop,
Andrew Marr. He qualifies because of | 0:51:43 | 0:51:49
a Scottish mother. So far, he's been
effective. | 0:51:49 | 0:51:53
He's done well. He's won two
turnovers. Busy around the contact | 0:51:53 | 0:51:58
area.
He will be comfortable in the front | 0:51:58 | 0:52:06
row alongside Edinburgh colleagues,
Stuart McInally. They train together | 0:52:06 | 0:52:08
and play together. It makes a big
difference when you are working | 0:52:08 | 0:52:13
together as a unit. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:23
Definitely got the upper hand.
But not according to the ref who | 0:52:26 | 0:52:31
says that the Scots were wheeling.
Let's have another look at the | 0:52:31 | 0:52:39
scrum. But it looked as though
Scotland were driving straight and | 0:52:39 | 0:52:44
won the battle. The momentum shifts
forward and then round. I think that | 0:52:44 | 0:52:49
Pele Cowley can play that. If the
ball is the at the back, the referee | 0:52:49 | 0:52:54
could opt to use it to get the ball
in play. | 0:52:54 | 0:53:05
It's just outside the Scots '22. But
have they played on and dropped it? | 0:53:07 | 0:53:14
Tim Nanai-Williams tries to go
between a couple of defenders. | 0:53:14 | 0:53:21
Price is fishing for it.
These little kicks are effective. | 0:53:21 | 0:53:33
David Lemi has the control.
He's done really well David Lemi to | 0:53:33 | 0:53:43
buy himself time and space in a few
metres, as well. | 0:53:43 | 0:53:56
There's a trend developing for
Andrew Marr with that turnover. | 0:53:59 | 0:54:11
-- Marfo. | 0:54:25 | 0:54:34
A free ball, Chris.
Yeah, I'd like to see them keep it | 0:54:36 | 0:54:42
in hand and challenge. Nic Berry
played the long advantage in the | 0:54:42 | 0:54:46
opening minutes. That ball's been
disrupted. He'll come back for a | 0:54:46 | 0:54:56
penalty.
Price thinking about it again with | 0:54:56 | 0:55:00
Finn Russell.
Ali Price chatting away as a good | 0:55:00 | 0:55:13
scrum-half does. Always barking at
the forwards ahead of him. He is so | 0:55:13 | 0:55:20
quick. He's on fire for Glasgow.
Beaten more defenders than anyone | 0:55:20 | 0:55:27
else in the Pro14. Despite only
playing under 300 minutes. So sharp | 0:55:27 | 0:55:33
with the ball in hand. And here is
his flatmate and friend, Finn | 0:55:33 | 0:55:39
Russell.
He's just sending that ball between | 0:55:39 | 0:55:51
the uprights. It is vital for the
Scottish. | 0:55:51 | 0:55:55
13-3.
Samoans have looked surprising ball | 0:55:55 | 0:56:01
in hand. Lots of class players but
the Scots have turned them over. | 0:56:01 | 0:56:07
I think as there are so many good
individuals. And sometimes getting | 0:56:07 | 0:56:12
further into the defensive line. And
it allows the Scotland's defensive | 0:56:12 | 0:56:18
players to get in and win the
turnovers. | 0:56:18 | 0:56:24
Scotland have been trying to contain
and look after possession and clear | 0:56:24 | 0:56:27
the lines.
William Nel, and Price with the kick | 0:56:27 | 0:56:36
again to Tuala.
Taken down by Jones. | 0:56:36 | 0:56:40
Lam, leave it is for Pele Cowley.
Owen says he's had enough of this. | 0:56:40 | 0:56:57
-- Ioane.
Lay, his brother is on the bench. | 0:57:04 | 0:57:12
The two of them moved down to their
new club together. | 0:57:12 | 0:57:20
It's another penalty. Scotland are
putting a lot of pressure on. | 0:57:20 | 0:57:26
A good tackle from Jonny Gray.
John Barclay was penalised for not | 0:57:26 | 0:57:34
rolling away. If you are a tackler
or an assist tackler, you have to | 0:57:34 | 0:57:40
roll from the ball as quick as you
can. To get up and out of the way as | 0:57:40 | 0:57:47
quick as possible to promote free
flowing attack and keeping an eye on | 0:57:47 | 0:57:52
the referee, as soon as he tells you
hands off, you have to do that and | 0:57:52 | 0:57:57
get away. | 0:57:57 | 0:58:07
Leiataua with the target. | 0:58:08 | 0:58:18
Ioan earthquake ises having a great
game. | 0:58:27 | 0:58:28 | |
Here he is.
Perez at nine. | 0:58:28 | 0:58:34
A counterruck by the Scots and
another penalty. | 0:58:34 | 0:58:37
Taken quickly. | 0:58:37 | 0:58:47
Piula Fa'asalele, the big number
two. Here are the crowd, thinking | 0:58:49 | 0:58:56
this could go Samoa's way. And they
are up to the line and claiming the | 0:58:56 | 0:59:00
try.
Well this is a little task for the | 0:59:00 | 0:59:05
TMO, isn't it? What's the question,
Nic Berry. | 0:59:05 | 0:59:19
Is it a try, yes or no? Well, let's
look at the angles. It is | 0:59:24 | 0:59:33
aggressive.
Is this the Samoans getting back on | 0:59:33 | 0:59:37
the scoreboard? I think it is over
the line. | 0:59:37 | 0:59:46
I think it's down.
I think at the end of that, if we | 0:59:46 | 0:59:50
can see it a little bit quicker, it
is number four, Josh Tyrell. On his | 0:59:50 | 0:59:58
debut. On the other angle it looks
as if he was under control of the | 0:59:58 | 1:00:03
ball.
Let's have a look at this. I hear | 1:00:03 | 1:00:06
that they have slowed this down for
everybody. Tyrell, has the ball | 1:00:06 | 1:00:11
under control, he's over the line...
Does the point of the ball touch the | 1:00:11 | 1:00:17
ground? I think it does. It doesn't
matter what you think, or me... I | 1:00:17 | 1:00:24
have a decision, you may award the
try. | 1:00:24 | 1:00:29 | |
Well, it's a try for Samoa. | 1:00:29 | 1:00:34
And this game which we thought was
going Scotland's way very much | 1:00:34 | 1:00:39
showing some of the Samoan talent
just kept that ball moving, Chris. | 1:00:39 | 1:00:43
It was direct. Lam carried it. The
hooker made in roads. It was just | 1:00:43 | 1:00:55
Tyrell who kept the ball under
control. Some great camera work and | 1:00:55 | 1:01:01
managed to convince us and the
referee and the television match | 1:01:01 | 1:01:04
official that it was a try. They
were under the posts and the | 1:01:04 | 1:01:10
anything number four, Tyrell took
his time, but just that power got | 1:01:10 | 1:01:15
over the line. And it's a 3 point
game. | 1:01:15 | 1:01:25 | |
Scotland are trying to keep the
tempo in the game. Stewart McInally | 1:01:32 | 1:01:36
with a quick throw. Well, that was
fascinating. Two very quickly taken | 1:01:36 | 1:01:44
line-outs. Watson with the charge.
The game has picked up in tempo. | 1:01:44 | 1:01:57
McInally into a Samoan sandwich.
Marfo. Price again. Around the | 1:01:57 | 1:02:07
corner they come. Wilson. McInally
involved. Another carry. Nel. You | 1:02:07 | 1:02:22
can hear the call for pick and go.
Watson. Just a little knock-on. I | 1:02:22 | 1:02:43
think it was Hamish Watson. Just
unfortunately for him. We go back to | 1:02:43 | 1:02:49
that Samoan try and we are talking
about the speed that Scotland are | 1:02:49 | 1:02:52
trying to bring to the game. That
was a quick penalty from Samoa in | 1:02:52 | 1:02:55
the shadow of the post as well. So,
they have signed up to the | 1:02:55 | 1:03:00
entertaining game, the quick tempo.
It is a try score there. Well, there | 1:03:00 | 1:03:05
is a um can of New Zealand medical
journal papers about islanders | 1:03:05 | 1:03:09
comparing them to the rest of the
population and the islanders in New | 1:03:09 | 1:03:14
Zealand compared to the average,
carry 11% more lean skeletal muscle | 1:03:14 | 1:03:20
and have 6% more bone mineral
content. There is power and this | 1:03:20 | 1:03:26
just demonstrated much of what
they're good at. Here is a quick tap | 1:03:26 | 1:03:31
penalty in the shadow of Scotland's
posts. Jonny Gray makes a tackle. | 1:03:31 | 1:03:37
Scotland are scrambling because it's
so quick to try and stop the power | 1:03:37 | 1:03:41
that's coming through and then the
pass comes from Pele Cowley. He just | 1:03:41 | 1:03:45
shifts it from the break down out to
Tyrell. That pass there. It allows | 1:03:45 | 1:03:51
space for Tyrell to use that
strength and the power to drive | 1:03:51 | 1:03:55
forward with the help of Lee. | 1:03:55 | 1:04:11
Donald Brighouse on this side of
that Samoan scrum has his own | 1:04:20 | 1:04:24
channel on YouTube. He has not
played many games at tighthead. He's | 1:04:24 | 1:04:29
a big unit. He is up against another
big unit. So this is the key area. | 1:04:29 | 1:04:38
Tighthead props are incredibly
valuable in world rugby. If you can | 1:04:38 | 1:04:41
hold your tight hand up, your team
can attack. | 1:04:41 | 1:04:53
He did. | 1:04:54 | 1:05:04
Hogg. Brilliant take. | 1:05:08 | 1:05:12
Marfo. McInally. Tried to feed it
on. Price. Winning the ball with | 1:05:16 | 1:05:24
just one or two bream in Break Down.
Wilson. I think he thought he was | 1:05:24 | 1:05:29
coming on a dummy line. It was a
late pass, wasn't it, for Finn | 1:05:29 | 1:05:34
Russell. So often those are the
delayed passes are the ones that | 1:05:34 | 1:05:37
break the line. It was almost half a
dummy from Russell and then the | 1:05:37 | 1:05:42
delayed pass. Wilson will be
disappointed not to take that, but | 1:05:42 | 1:05:45
he's such a good quality handler, he
won't let that get to him. The | 1:05:45 | 1:05:51
skipper gets his pack in and Stuart
Hogg tells him what he has seen from | 1:05:51 | 1:05:57
the back. Double. Double the
distance. He is maybe going to have | 1:05:57 | 1:06:12
to leave us. Well, Scots about 61%. | 1:06:12 | 1:06:26
Zander Fagerson will replace him. He
is a man with experience. A big, | 1:06:34 | 1:06:40
strong forward. He works so hard
around the field. He carries hard. | 1:06:40 | 1:06:45
He tackles hard. He takes the field
in the place of WP Nel. | 1:06:45 | 1:07:06
Well, Scotland have lost just one of
their ten encounters with Samoa. One | 1:07:06 | 1:07:12
eight, drawn one and that was in
2013. And Samoa won by 10 points if | 1:07:12 | 1:07:18
Durban. -- in Durban. The game is
tight just now and the 10 point | 1:07:18 | 1:07:26
victory in 2013, the only game in
the last five meetings between these | 1:07:26 | 1:07:30
two sides to be decided by more than
7 points. The last outing was at the | 1:07:30 | 1:07:37
Rugby World Cup 2015, St James'
Park. A late Greg laid law try. Four | 1:07:37 | 1:07:42
tries to Samoa and three to Scotland
that day. A lot of damage from the | 1:07:42 | 1:07:48
boot as well. It's another tight one
here. Good pressure, Tim | 1:07:48 | 1:07:56
Nanai-Williams. Turned over. Given
it to Stuart Hogg. Diagonal kick. | 1:07:56 | 1:08:02
Chased by Jones. Tim Nanai-Williams
screams back as does Paul Perez. | 1:08:02 | 1:08:13
That's a good decision for Stuart
Hogg. The hooker had a cracking game | 1:08:13 | 1:08:17
and I thought he was going to take a
quick 22. Stuart Hogg resisting the | 1:08:17 | 1:08:20
temptation to run there and finding
the space in behind the Samoan line. | 1:08:20 | 1:08:25
That's mature play from Stuart Hogg.
Unfortunately for him the ball just | 1:08:25 | 1:08:29
rolled over the try line. It's a...
Well, let's... | 1:08:29 | 1:08:36
Jones.
Jones does well. He just avoided | 1:08:43 | 1:08:47
contact. Price looks up. Has Toolis.
Toolis had a bunch of bodies with | 1:08:47 | 1:08:53
him. Russell sneaks through. The
Scots are trying to win the ball | 1:08:53 | 1:08:57
with just one or two people at Break
Down. Jonny Gray. Hogg in from 15. | 1:08:57 | 1:09:08
Can they get the offload away?
Intercepted by Tim Nanai-Williams. | 1:09:08 | 1:09:15
He had a good game, Tim
Nanai-Williams. Again, these are | 1:09:15 | 1:09:18
quick plays. Russell. What a game.
Price. Hogg skips it. To Jones. | 1:09:18 | 1:09:32
Jones. Jones. Jones!
Huw Jones. Oh, what a score! | 1:09:32 | 1:09:40
Everything was quick. The quick
line-out. The quick hands and the | 1:09:40 | 1:09:45
shimmy and the haund off. Delightful
try. Huw Jones scores almost every | 1:09:45 | 1:09:54
time he takes the feel and it was
about pace and power. Into Finn | 1:09:54 | 1:09:59
Russell and Russell does well to
keep the ball alive and get out of | 1:09:59 | 1:10:03
the contact. Hogg gets himself to
first receiver. Zips out an | 1:10:03 | 1:10:09
excellent pass. To Huw Jones and Huw
Jones is so quick. His feet are so | 1:10:09 | 1:10:16
dangerous. Perez stands off and
that's an open invitation for Jones | 1:10:16 | 1:10:20
to use his speed and power and score
a brilliant finish in the corner. | 1:10:20 | 1:10:28
Huw Jones, good score. Well, he has
not had the ball in his hands too | 1:10:28 | 1:10:32
often, Huw Jones. He collected a
couple of kick-offs and made a few | 1:10:32 | 1:10:37
yards and this is his first
opportunity to attack. His footwork | 1:10:37 | 1:10:42
is so good. He drove through two
tackles and got Scotland's second | 1:10:42 | 1:10:47
try. A bit of a test for Hugh
Russell. Left touchline. He has been | 1:10:47 | 1:10:53
successful. Look at the crowd. Look
at the kick. Just to the right. Of | 1:10:53 | 1:11:03
the post. There is 18-10. You can
see the difference, can't you? | 1:11:03 | 1:11:16
Gregor Townsend, it's quicker
line-outs. Little passes. Try to win | 1:11:16 | 1:11:21
the ball with fewer people at ruck
time. It is quick. It's tempo and | 1:11:21 | 1:11:26
the longer the game goes on, the
harder that is to do, but the more | 1:11:26 | 1:11:30
benefit you will have if you are the
more kind of fitter and stronger | 1:11:30 | 1:11:34
team. But there is always a danger
against a team like Samoa. Tim | 1:11:34 | 1:11:40
Nanai-Williams. Pa A good game
today. To Russell. Price. Price. | 1:11:40 | 1:11:52
Everything at speed. McInally.
Watson. Price has bodies to the | 1:11:52 | 1:12:00
left. Toolis. Price. Ferguson.
Fagerson. | 1:12:00 | 1:12:25
Well, Scotland went into this game
with injury issues upfront | 1:12:25 | 1:12:29
especially at prop. They have
another one because WP Nel hasn't | 1:12:29 | 1:12:35
gone off for a head injury
assessment. I am told they think he | 1:12:35 | 1:12:38
has fractured his fore arm. That's
an unlucky break. He has had so many | 1:12:38 | 1:12:46
injuries, hasn't he? If he has
fractured a fore arm, it shows what | 1:12:46 | 1:12:50
these guys are made of. These guys
are tough. If you fracture your fore | 1:12:50 | 1:12:58
arm and walk off shaking your head,
it's incredible. In the match | 1:12:58 | 1:13:01
programme he talks about coming from
a small village, 200 people, small | 1:13:01 | 1:13:06
school, didn't play rugby until he
was in his late teens and then | 1:13:06 | 1:13:10
suddenly found that he was a prop to
be reckoned with. Started off as a | 1:13:10 | 1:13:15
hooker and key to Scotland, hasn't
he? He has been key. He has been for | 1:13:15 | 1:13:19
Edinburgh and Scotland as a try
scorer and tighthead prop as well, | 1:13:19 | 1:13:23
but we wish him well if that's the
case. | 1:13:23 | 1:13:29 | |
Perez. It was fed back inaccurately
between the two players. Watch this. | 1:13:29 | 1:13:43
Piula Faasalele. Perez is on it and
rightly so. We talk about important | 1:13:43 | 1:13:52
moments and important times in a
match. The five minutes before and | 1:13:52 | 1:13:57
after half-time are always hugely
crucial. For Scotland if they can | 1:13:57 | 1:14:01
get their set piece dominant, they
can launch an attack. It could have | 1:14:01 | 1:14:06
a big bearing on the game that
mistake. They did well to cover it, | 1:14:06 | 1:14:10
but they will have to defend with
the crowd at Murrayfield getting | 1:14:10 | 1:14:14
behind their team too. | 1:14:14 | 1:14:22
Price. Free-kick to the Scots. | 1:14:23 | 1:14:37
Jordan Lay. | 1:14:50 | 1:15:00
This is the nuts and bolts. | 1:15:06 | 1:15:15
You can put a stable platform before
the ball comes in and the referee | 1:15:17 | 1:15:22
manages that process now. Driven by
safety, but you want the guys to be | 1:15:22 | 1:15:29
as close as possible so they can't
charge at each other. Touch in and | 1:15:29 | 1:15:33
just fold in and then the pressure
comes in when the ball comes in. We | 1:15:33 | 1:15:39
should remind people, Stuart Hogg in
scoring that try saw him become | 1:15:39 | 1:15:46
Scotland's joint try scorer with
Gregor Townsend. Penalty for | 1:15:46 | 1:15:50
Scotland. I think we might see
another scrum here. He is making | 1:15:50 | 1:16:02
sure he knew what the penalty was,
but the decision is to go to the | 1:16:02 | 1:16:06
line. I thought they would go for a
longer scrum. It the clock is in | 1:16:06 | 1:16:10
red. It's over 40 minutes. Last year
that would have been game over, but | 1:16:10 | 1:16:15
now, you can kick a penalty and then
play from there. McInally. Taken by | 1:16:15 | 1:16:20
Toolis. He is being used a lot. And
this could be the grind. 18-10 the | 1:16:20 | 1:16:28
score. They are driving forward. He
tries to hold them back. Price is | 1:16:28 | 1:16:33
thinking of taking it. Samoa has
done well. It's a try for Scotland. | 1:16:33 | 1:16:47
And a bit of a dust up as well. It
looks as if Stewart McInally. | 1:16:47 | 1:16:53
McInally was just piloting that ball
at the back. Stayed in his position | 1:16:53 | 1:16:57
and the men in front helped him
across. | 1:16:57 | 1:17:09
There was disappointment in that
ball. McInally had his hands on it. | 1:17:09 | 1:17:18
The discipline not to breakaway and
go for the line on your own, it's so | 1:17:18 | 1:17:22
difficult to do when you're so
close. He stays with his unit. As a | 1:17:22 | 1:17:27
team and as a pack, Scotland drive
over and get the third try. Credit | 1:17:27 | 1:17:32
to McInally. Edinburgh taught him
much about the work of a hooker. So | 1:17:32 | 1:17:37
we are in extra time first-half. 10
point lead. Finn Russell. He has | 1:17:37 | 1:17:45
enjoyed his partnership with Price.
And Russell just brings the half to | 1:17:45 | 1:17:54
a close. An extraordinary first 40
minutes. A really enjoyable first 40 | 1:17:54 | 1:18:00
minutes as well. The first Autumn
International here and Finn Russell, | 1:18:00 | 1:18:07
a few tries for Scotland. A kick
through by Finn Russell and followed | 1:18:07 | 1:18:14
on by the sharp, Tommy Seymour. Huw
Jones was brilliant and McInally | 1:18:14 | 1:18:22
scored Scotland's third. Samoa had a
sky scored and they will be happy | 1:18:22 | 1:18:30
with the possession they had, but
disappointed with the territory. | 1:18:30 | 1:18:33
Scotland are looking sharp. It's
half-time, the score is Scotland 25, | 1:18:33 | 1:18:40
Samoa, 10. | 1:18:40 | 1:18:47
Plenty of tries in that first-half.
Stuart Hogg got things going early | 1:18:49 | 1:18:54
on with the 17th try of his Scotland
career equalling the best. And then, | 1:18:54 | 1:19:01
a bit bitty. It went quiet, but
Samoa were awarded. Josh Tyrell | 1:19:01 | 1:19:07
there. Huw Jones as well, the
centre, making it his fifth in nine | 1:19:07 | 1:19:13
tests. What a force he is going to
be and then over they went, McInally | 1:19:13 | 1:19:20
to make it three tries to Scotland.
Let's have a look at the stats and | 1:19:20 | 1:19:25
see if they back up that story.
Well, it was interesting because | 1:19:25 | 1:19:29
beforehand Dan you were saying it
was going to be an offloading game | 1:19:29 | 1:19:32
for Samoa. He hoped that was going
to be the way they set themselves | 1:19:32 | 1:19:36
up. They went for territory and
possession and certain periods of | 1:19:36 | 1:19:40
the game, possession was higher than
the 54%, but they had six offloads | 1:19:40 | 1:19:44
to Scotland's two, but as the game
went on, Scotland got more into it. | 1:19:44 | 1:19:47
They managed to disrupt Scotland a
little bit. It wasn't quite the | 1:19:47 | 1:19:51
speed of rugby perhaps that Gregor
would have enjoyed. He will be | 1:19:51 | 1:19:56
pleased with the scoreline at
half-time, but maybe not the | 1:19:56 | 1:19:59
performance. In patches, you have
seen the pace and the offloading | 1:19:59 | 1:20:02
game, but they have not put any
sustained phases together. So it has | 1:20:02 | 1:20:08
been a bit bitty, they have not got
that tonne it continuity and the | 1:20:08 | 1:20:13
game never flowed. You need two
teams for that, but they will be | 1:20:13 | 1:20:17
pleased 25-10 up at half-time. What
will the mood be in the Samoan | 1:20:17 | 1:20:22
dressing room? They came out to play
and they have done that well. We've | 1:20:22 | 1:20:27
picked a side that's low to the
ground, not much height. Their | 1:20:27 | 1:20:31
offloading game as we spoke about
and they are close to the line, but | 1:20:31 | 1:20:34
struggled at the line-outs, they
will be talking about that and | 1:20:34 | 1:20:37
fixing that up in the changing rooms
now, I'm sure. Did you see the game | 1:20:37 | 1:20:44
plan? Was it being executed there? I
think so. Scotland will be happy | 1:20:44 | 1:20:49
with the score, but it has been
scrappy at times. It's the first | 1:20:49 | 1:20:52
game of a new series. It takes
longer, but Scotland trying to be | 1:20:52 | 1:20:56
positive which is brilliant to see.
A couple of quick line-outs. A | 1:20:56 | 1:20:59
couple of counter attacks by Finn to
hold the Samoan defence and put it | 1:20:59 | 1:21:03
behind them and I think 25 points,
Scotland will be happy with that and | 1:21:03 | 1:21:09
enter the dressing room at half-time
and try and reassess. Stuart Hogg | 1:21:09 | 1:21:13
kept them going within a couple of
minutes. What a start. He had a | 1:21:13 | 1:21:18
disrupted summer with injury and was
sent back from his Lions experience. | 1:21:18 | 1:21:22
He looks different. He has lost
weight, hasn't he? He seems sharper? | 1:21:22 | 1:21:29
He is ripping up trees with Glasgow.
I think he will have enjoyed his | 1:21:29 | 1:21:38
first 40 minute ins international
rugby and it is in turn over ball | 1:21:38 | 1:21:43
that Gregor's team gets excited.
Unstructured defence and a great | 1:21:43 | 1:21:47
turn over there. But then with the
bounce of the rugby ball, you just | 1:21:47 | 1:21:51
need to take a chance. It is a good
kick by Finn. Tommy Seymour kicks | 1:21:51 | 1:21:56
over beautifully. This ball can go
anywhere as it bounces over the head | 1:21:56 | 1:22:00
into Stuart Hogg. He will not get an
easier try, but you have got to buy | 1:22:00 | 1:22:06
the raffle ticket to have a chance
of winning the prize. Russell puts | 1:22:06 | 1:22:14
the ball in that area of
uncertainty. That ball can go in. | 1:22:14 | 1:22:18
Tommy Seymour does well and after
that that, it is the bounce the | 1:22:18 | 1:22:22
rugby ball can sometimes go for and
sometimes it doesn't. It goes into | 1:22:22 | 1:22:33
Stewart's hands. The lads have been
giving him stick for the new figure. | 1:22:33 | 1:22:48
He has got a bad haircut. If he
could sort that out, that would be | 1:22:48 | 1:22:53
good. It is credit to Hoggy. He
works hard on his game. He loves his | 1:22:53 | 1:22:58
rugby and he is talking about his
speed. He has done tremendously well | 1:22:58 | 1:23:04
and get the ball in his hands more
and he will probably grab another | 1:23:04 | 1:23:07
try today. There was just that one
try away and suddenly the score | 1:23:07 | 1:23:13
lines closed in together and Samoa
took the advantage or seized the | 1:23:13 | 1:23:18
moment when they had the chance? It
came down to a penalty here. A quick | 1:23:18 | 1:23:26
work play and that's why Samoa need
to lift the tempo and play more. Run | 1:23:26 | 1:23:31
these breakdowns. They are a low
squat team and good technically in | 1:23:31 | 1:23:35
the pick and go. Those are the sorts
of areas we need to be playing more | 1:23:35 | 1:23:39
rugby in. Taking the opportunity
when they had the penalty because | 1:23:39 | 1:23:47
the boot working particularly well
for them. The body angles were very | 1:23:47 | 1:23:51
good. Scotland's defence is not
doing anything wrong. They are quite | 1:23:51 | 1:23:55
low, but sometimes the referee does
a block in there, but there is good | 1:23:55 | 1:24:00
leg drive to get across the line to
finally close down. What we see | 1:24:00 | 1:24:04
here, he gets over the line. Can you
see the ball going down? No, but you | 1:24:04 | 1:24:09
know it has | 1:24:09 | 1:24:09
see the ball going down? No, but you
know it has done. You can see just, | 1:24:09 | 1:24:11
that's where it comes down, before
before it, Gabby, I think there is | 1:24:11 | 1:24:16
an incident with Piula Faasalele who
starts with the quick penalty. The | 1:24:16 | 1:24:21
referee gave it and it was the right
try, but before it, Piula Faasalele | 1:24:21 | 1:24:27
came in and I thought using the
shoulder. The penalty has been | 1:24:27 | 1:24:35
given. Marfo is over the ball.
That's been penalised a lot. Going | 1:24:35 | 1:24:40
in out of control. Then he gets up
and takes the quick penalty as if to | 1:24:40 | 1:24:45
think the referee might penalise me
here, I will start the game quickly. | 1:24:45 | 1:24:49
I think that maybe should have been
called back for the shoulder. If he | 1:24:49 | 1:24:53
was going to have a vantage point he
had it, didn't he? Yes, he did, but | 1:24:53 | 1:24:58
these things happen so quickly. It
is Nic Berry's first international | 1:24:58 | 1:25:03
match today. He has done a good job.
It happens fast and credit to the | 1:25:03 | 1:25:09
Samoans. Dan is being quite quiet at
the moment? I think I will use that | 1:25:09 | 1:25:15
tactic!
LAUGHTER | 1:25:15 | 1:25:18
And then Huw Jones who, we of
course, talked about pre-match and | 1:25:18 | 1:25:22
now his try rate for internationals,
five in nine, that makes it. He is | 1:25:22 | 1:25:26
going to be some force on the stats,
isn't he? He will be challenging | 1:25:26 | 1:25:30
Stuart Hogg. This is the ambition
that Scotland are playing at. They | 1:25:30 | 1:25:33
get the ball. Stuart Hogg throws it
in there to Finn Russell and takes | 1:25:33 | 1:25:40
it forward and they recycle it well
and we didn't see a lot of this. But | 1:25:40 | 1:25:51
you just think, Huw Jones, this
doesn't look like this should be a | 1:25:51 | 1:25:54
try. Perez misses the tackle, but
when somebody has got the confidence | 1:25:54 | 1:25:59
with the try line then they just
find a knack of getting there. It | 1:25:59 | 1:26:03
was a great finish. A lovely offload
there as well and Scotland playing | 1:26:03 | 1:26:06
at this point in the game, you can
see the fast tmp owed rugby that | 1:26:06 | 1:26:11
Gregor said he wants. He wants them
to be the quickest team in the world | 1:26:11 | 1:26:15
and there were glimpses of that.
T-Scotland have taken the | 1:26:15 | 1:26:18
initiative. There is a Samoan player
marking the quick line-out and the | 1:26:18 | 1:26:27
killer ball was from Ali Price.
Hoggy shifted it to Huw. Perez will | 1:26:27 | 1:26:36
be disappointed with his tackle.
Players in space with a hand on | 1:26:36 | 1:26:40
ball. Difficult to defend. McInally
going over, but Samoa will be | 1:26:40 | 1:26:47
disappointed with this line-out.
This was after they got a scrum | 1:26:47 | 1:26:51
penalty. I was saying to Greg would
you go scrum or line-out? They get | 1:26:51 | 1:26:59
good control. McInally is at the
back. You think Price has taken it | 1:26:59 | 1:27:03
away. McInally said no, no, I'm
going over. That kick came from a | 1:27:03 | 1:27:08
Samoa line-out that they should have
been able to control. So at 18-10, | 1:27:08 | 1:27:12
that's probably a good score for
Samoa. 25-10, and that's just the | 1:27:12 | 1:27:17
game might have just been taken
away. In a moment of madness when | 1:27:17 | 1:27:22
the Samoan number eight threw the
ball to nobody. It led to the | 1:27:22 | 1:27:25
penalty. Led to the line-out and led
to the try. For me, that's a | 1:27:25 | 1:27:32
composure thing and composure comes
from knowing and trusting president | 1:27:32 | 1:27:35
guys around you. We don't have the
build up. The guys only came into | 1:27:35 | 1:27:38
camp eight days ago. That's really
reflected in the set piece of the | 1:27:38 | 1:27:43
line-outs. Scotland is doing a good
job of speeding up the set piece and | 1:27:43 | 1:27:48
Samoa have got a big job on their
hands to really try and reign that | 1:27:48 | 1:27:52
in. Thank you. Earlier this week,
the rugby community was out | 1:27:52 | 1:27:57
in. Thank you. Earlier this week,
the rugby community was out in | 1:27:57 | 1:27:57
force. This summer, the devastating
news was delivered by Dodi Weir that | 1:27:57 | 1:28:05
he has motor neurone disease. The
rugby community rallied. 1300 people | 1:28:05 | 1:28:09
turned out for a dinner, including
150 rugby players. It was a great | 1:28:09 | 1:28:14
tribute to the big man. Rugby man.
Scotland international. | 1:28:14 | 1:28:25
A professional. It is a degenerative
muscle issues. It closes down the | 1:28:25 | 1:28:37
body so you can't speak, can't eat,
can't limp, walk, talk, the only | 1:28:37 | 1:28:44
muscle that's left maybe one that
you can see, so you have to chun | 1:28:44 | 1:28:51
kate withure eyes.
When Doddie rang me, he was laughing | 1:28:51 | 1:29:03
about it. He said stop that, get on
with it. He is never down. He is | 1:29:03 | 1:29:10
always positive and that's brilliant
in a man like Dodge. With this | 1:29:10 | 1:29:14
issue, you don't know what your
timetable is, it could be five weeks | 1:29:14 | 1:29:18
or ten years. Who knows what's
around the corner. I was diagnosed | 1:29:18 | 1:29:23
in December last year. The professor
said I couldn't walk into his | 1:29:23 | 1:29:26
surgery a year after. That's given
me a goal to prove these people | 1:29:26 | 1:29:30
wrong. | 1:29:30 | 1:29:39
We set a trust up for my good lady,
the family and others. | 1:29:39 | 1:29:45
The focus is where the nations can
come forward and find support for | 1:29:45 | 1:29:53
this.
Everybody is celebrating Donnie, you | 1:29:53 | 1:30:04
can see the people, the rugby
players, the ex-rugby players. He's | 1:30:04 | 1:30:09
a good man. | 1:30:09 | 1:30:12
a good man.
It is just unbelievable It was great | 1:30:12 | 1:30:17
the support from the rugby community
and wider. We are here for him. With | 1:30:17 | 1:30:24
a dreadful diagnosis, he needs a lot
of support. We need to support his | 1:30:24 | 1:30:28
family and to support the
foundation. | 1:30:28 | 1:30:31
Quite by accident he has almost
become the figure head. And globally | 1:30:31 | 1:30:37
as well. It is the love and the
affection for the big man. | 1:30:37 | 1:30:41
I have to make a difference. That is
what I would like to do, to fight. | 1:30:41 | 1:30:47
There is no known cure. One drug in
21 years for people with MMD, so I | 1:30:47 | 1:30:56
want to raise awareness of this
awful condition. | 1:30:56 | 1:31:03
I'm here to continue this fight.
I was at an event with him last week | 1:31:03 | 1:31:09
in Newcastle at his club. He spoke
there very well. Yes, we are all | 1:31:09 | 1:31:17
pulling with him, that he can fight
this. | 1:31:17 | 1:31:21 | |
He's just cracking on, getting MMD
out there, so that hopefully, some | 1:31:21 | 1:31:25
day, one day may be saved. He said
himself, it may not come quick | 1:31:25 | 1:31:31
enough for him but if it can save
somebody else it is a big part of | 1:31:31 | 1:31:35
what is happening here.
Family man... Frazer... Fighter... | 1:31:35 | 1:31:43
An inspiration to everybody... My
goal is to get a cure. To show aware | 1:31:43 | 1:31:51
Miss As well, to provide a cure, to
put more money in. It will be | 1:31:51 | 1:31:59
brilliant if I'm here to annoy you
for many a year. | 1:31:59 | 1:32:05
An incredibly emotional evening on
Monday night. But he is such an | 1:32:05 | 1:32:11
inspiring, huge and joyful
character, Doddie, it is impossible | 1:32:11 | 1:32:15
to keep that spirit down. Everybody
in the room was relieved to see that | 1:32:15 | 1:32:21
spirit there in abundance.
As we said, we didn't want to be | 1:32:21 | 1:32:28
there but for Doddie, it is all
about the awareness of MMD, to find | 1:32:28 | 1:32:33
a cure. He is so self-depricating.
He stole the show while you were | 1:32:33 | 1:32:38
trying to host it.
It was a remarkable night. All of | 1:32:38 | 1:32:43
our wishes are with him. A real
testament to what an incredible | 1:32:43 | 1:32:50
family rugby is, when they are
needed they all come together. | 1:32:50 | 1:32:59
Will there be more tries in the next
40 minutes? Will the game get a bit | 1:33:00 | 1:33:05
more of a rhythm? Will Stuart Hogg
become Scotland's top try scorer of | 1:33:05 | 1:33:12
all time? John Beattie will be
helping answer those questions for | 1:33:12 | 1:33:20
you.
Thank you. And Doddie is here at | 1:33:20 | 1:33:27
Murrayfield, and we wish you well,
Doddie. | 1:33:27 | 1:33:31
Murrayfield, and we wish you well,
Doddie. | 1:33:31 | 1:33:39
Great territory in the first half.
Sparkling attack. | 1:33:41 | 1:33:51
Stuart Hogg picked Ofwatson. They
have it wide. | 1:33:51 | 1:33:58
Watson carries. Knocked by Ioane. | 1:33:58 | 1:34:10
Not quite the same structure from
the men in blue. Tim Nanai-Williams | 1:34:22 | 1:34:26
to Lee Jones, left-wing.
I think that it was held and lost | 1:34:26 | 1:34:38
there, as he broke free from that
tackle. A delayed pass again from | 1:34:38 | 1:34:42
Finn Russell. Close to the
defenders. It was dislodging the | 1:34:42 | 1:34:46
tackle.
Allister had it. | 1:34:46 | 1:34:52
Was it Piula Fa'asalele on the blind
side. | 1:34:52 | 1:34:57 | |
We saw a Samoa kick but no advantage
given. | 1:34:57 | 1:35:11
This try before half-time, is always
crucial. | 1:35:15 | 1:35:23
Let's see how Scotland and Samoa
react. | 1:35:23 | 1:35:26
Tim Nanai-Williams, you are right,
they are kicking more. | 1:35:26 | 1:35:30
Tommy Seymour... | 1:35:30 | 1:35:40
Ping-ponging this than the first
half. | 1:35:50 | 1:35:56 | |
Russell, confidence, whoa, Finn
Russell, what a boy! Price! Ali | 1:35:56 | 1:36:01
Price, up into the opposition 22.
Stays on the ground. | 1:36:01 | 1:36:07
A whole stack of white jerseys. Gray
is left to Russell. What an attack! | 1:36:07 | 1:36:14
Finn Russell! I think he had an
invisible cloak on there. The kick | 1:36:14 | 1:36:20
was too long. He had lots of time to
pick up and look for options. He | 1:36:20 | 1:36:28
found a way. Off loading to Toolis,
who has been astounding. | 1:36:28 | 1:36:37
The defence got back and covered
from this pass. Zipping it out to | 1:36:37 | 1:36:42
How Jones. Good counterattack, good
intent from Scotland. | 1:36:42 | 1:36:49
Four man line-out. Successful, The
Samoans have given the Scots a | 1:36:49 | 1:37:01
line-out in their own 22.
That's five pieces of possession, | 1:37:01 | 1:37:08
and they've kicked every single one
of them. | 1:37:08 | 1:37:12
They are trying to get territory and
put pressure on Scotland. | 1:37:12 | 1:37:16
Toolis and Berkeley have been the
main line-out men. I think many | 1:37:16 | 1:37:22
would think that Johnny Gray would
be the target. Barclay, barking at | 1:37:22 | 1:37:28
his team-mates! Penalty advantage,
Price. It's a free ball. Russell | 1:37:28 | 1:37:35
with the short ball. Dunbar is hit.
Gray makes the vital yard or two. | 1:37:35 | 1:37:55
Wilson in the back.
Finn Russell has the ball in his | 1:37:56 | 1:38:01
hand. It's a quick penalty.
There is a small matter of a mild | 1:38:01 | 1:38:13
disagreement.
Maybe they just didn't want Finn to | 1:38:13 | 1:38:17
take it quickly.
This is what happened off the ball. | 1:38:17 | 1:38:26
Stuart McInally, and Fonotia, and
Rey Lee-Lo... Oh, he's got a cut. | 1:38:26 | 1:38:36
As a result Scotland can't take it
quickly, they will go to the | 1:38:36 | 1:38:40
line-out where they were successful
at the end of the first half. | 1:38:40 | 1:38:52
Stuart McInally there, ready to get
the ball in quickly. No hanging | 1:38:53 | 1:38:57
around.
Not hanging around at all. | 1:38:57 | 1:39:05
Chris Vui is there, number five,
sneaking around the corner. Keep | 1:39:05 | 1:39:10
going says Price and the white
jerseys get closer. They've got a | 1:39:10 | 1:39:14
penalty, I think they've got a try!
It's another try! And I think this | 1:39:14 | 1:39:20
could be Stuart McInally.
Stuart McInally, sealing what has | 1:39:20 | 1:39:25
been a commanding performance with
two tries! Absolutely. It's been | 1:39:25 | 1:39:31
excellent. Difficult to play so
quickly and get the ball so quickly. | 1:39:31 | 1:39:35
The throw was good, the catch good,
the drive took time to set up but | 1:39:35 | 1:39:40
then this was only going one way to
the line. A finish, waiting for the | 1:39:40 | 1:39:46
gap, he drives and explodes through
towards the line. | 1:39:46 | 1:39:50
You can see Stuart McInally at the
back. He is a converted wing | 1:39:50 | 1:39:54
forward. And then look at the leg
drive. Well done. | 1:39:54 | 1:40:00
Both his tries have been excellent
in terms of continue youity and the | 1:40:00 | 1:40:05
teamship. But the final has been
excellent. | 1:40:05 | 1:40:09
The discipline to wait for the first
try. And the aggression to drive | 1:40:09 | 1:40:13
when he sees the space.
And two figures doing ahead of the | 1:40:13 | 1:40:20
ball, doing the blocking, the hard
yard. Here is Finn Russell. | 1:40:20 | 1:40:25
Oh, he's enjoying his kicking today.
He gets another two points on the | 1:40:25 | 1:40:35
scoreboard.
Not to harp on about it but we spoke | 1:40:35 | 1:40:46
about it, that's three tries
Scotland have scored in a ten minute | 1:40:46 | 1:40:50
window. Impressive stuff.
Samoa have to look to win possession | 1:40:50 | 1:40:56
back in Scotland territory and bring
some of the spark into their | 1:40:56 | 1:41:01
attacking that we saw earlier on in
this match. | 1:41:01 | 1:41:08
Well, there's Stuart McInally, we
saw him first a few years ago. | 1:41:08 | 1:41:26
He is a good leader. A good captain.
His discipline is outstanding. He | 1:41:26 | 1:41:32
has to get there, get the ball and
get it in. It is different to what | 1:41:32 | 1:41:36
he is used to in previous games.
He has to execute the call and the | 1:41:36 | 1:41:41
throw. He is playing well,
certainly, Stuart McInally. | 1:41:41 | 1:41:54
A bit more bite to this team.
A little off load. | 1:42:06 | 1:42:13
Ioane, out wide to the right.
Inside. David Lemi off the | 1:42:13 | 1:42:19
left-wing. Narrow but making ground.
Tim Nanai-Williams, no, it's not, | 1:42:19 | 1:42:31
it's Fonotia.
Again, these are Samoans smashing | 1:42:31 | 1:42:36
up.
There's the try lean. | 1:42:36 | 1:42:46
Chris Vui tackled by Watson. | 1:42:46 | 1:42:57
Another pick and go, this time by
Donald Brighouse. Is he over the | 1:42:57 | 1:43:03
line? That could be a score. He
thinks he's got it. This is Piula | 1:43:03 | 1:43:17
Fa'asalele, number 8.
Chris, the Samoans in the pick and | 1:43:17 | 1:43:25
go, well they have made ground? Yes. | 1:43:25 | 1:43:37
George Clancy there said he didn't
get a grounding. | 1:43:38 | 1:43:42
But the pick and go has worked well.
It is how Samoa have worked a try. | 1:43:42 | 1:43:50
This is Piula Fa'asalele trying to
get to the line. There is a boot | 1:43:50 | 1:43:55
underneath that. Ali Price's hands
there. And Berkeley comes in. All | 1:43:55 | 1:44:01
you have to do is touch a blade of
grass. And here we are, a decision. | 1:44:01 | 1:44:07
He doesn't need the other angle.
We're going show you the other | 1:44:07 | 1:44:12
angle. But two series of pick and
goes and two tries for Samoa. They | 1:44:12 | 1:44:18
desthefsh try.
It is similar to the first try that | 1:44:18 | 1:44:22
they scored. I don't think it is
quite as conclusive as the first | 1:44:22 | 1:44:27
one. There is a foot underneath the
hand of John Berkeley. It is so, so | 1:44:27 | 1:44:35
close but the try has been given.
It's been awarded and it is similar | 1:44:35 | 1:44:40
to the first one.
Fa'asalele did well to see the space | 1:44:40 | 1:44:44
and attack it.
50 minutes gone. | 1:44:44 | 1:45:00
There's a try scorer there.
There was space to pick up the ball. | 1:45:00 | 1:45:07
But he had the strength to get over.
Good take by Tyrell. | 1:45:07 | 1:45:26
And there's a replacement at
scrum-half. | 1:45:26 | 1:45:36
Matavao is on at 21. Trying disrupt
the breakdown. | 1:45:36 | 1:45:54
We spoke about the team, Melani
Matavao coming on, was the only | 1:45:54 | 1:46:01
Samoan based player in the squad,
playing in the Super 9 domestic | 1:46:01 | 1:46:07
competition.
Hisa Sasagi is coming on too. | 1:46:07 | 1:46:21
He is replacing Donald Brighouse. | 1:46:21 | 1:46:29
Stuart McInally at the back again.
Couldn't take it quickly because of | 1:46:32 | 1:46:37
substitutions.
He's done well, Chris Vui. Coming | 1:46:37 | 1:46:41
through the middle of that lot.
Good defence by Samoa, isn't it? | 1:46:41 | 1:46:56
Congratulating each other.
Chris Vui, right through the middle. | 1:46:56 | 1:47:03
It was perfectly legal. His hands on
the ball. Even though on Scotland's | 1:47:03 | 1:47:07
side. There was a ball.
No need to roll away as it was not a | 1:47:07 | 1:47:14
tackle, it was a maul. And quite
rightly, it's a maul when it's a | 1:47:14 | 1:47:21
turnover.
Good hard work from the Samoans. | 1:47:21 | 1:47:27
There is Chris, he got his big hands
on the ball and stopped it coming | 1:47:27 | 1:47:32
out. | 1:47:32 | 1:47:41 | |
This has slowed the tempo down. With
spoke about the speed of the game. | 1:48:13 | 1:48:18
This is maybe astute playing from
the Samoans to disrupt that flow of | 1:48:18 | 1:48:26
Scotland.
Well, a solid scrum from Samoa. | 1:48:26 | 1:48:32
Taken up by Lam. | 1:48:32 | 1:48:43
Oh, Stuart Hogg! Stuart Hogg, what a
break. | 1:48:47 | 1:48:52
But, accord tolling the ref, he's
not happy! Samoa looking to take it | 1:48:52 | 1:49:01
quickly. But it looked a decent
kick-chase from Samoa. | 1:49:01 | 1:49:08
He's saying that eight shifted off
his position. Let's watch this. You | 1:49:08 | 1:49:11
call it.
So, Ryan Wilson and number 8 and | 1:49:11 | 1:49:20
number 5.
He doesn't have to change his line. | 1:49:20 | 1:49:23
He doesn't have to get out of the
way but he can't move towards the | 1:49:23 | 1:49:28
Samoan captain to stop him from
making the tackle. | 1:49:28 | 1:49:31
Well done that man.
He's going to keep the ball. | 1:49:31 | 1:49:35
He's going for a counter attack.
He is off. | 1:49:35 | 1:49:48
There is Ryan Wilson. I saw an
article, when he is playing, he goes | 1:49:54 | 1:49:59
to work. No prisoners, he goes to
work. | 1:49:59 | 1:50:06 | |
Scotland have won 12 linouts, the
Samoans have won five. A good | 1:50:06 | 1:50:11
drive-by Samoa. Taken by the loose
head prop, Lay. | 1:50:11 | 1:50:20
Perez off the wing. Hisa Sasagi on
the pitch. | 1:50:20 | 1:50:27
Turnover by Watson. That's where you
earn your money. Price looks up and | 1:50:27 | 1:50:33
take as little break. Ally price, a
dangerous attack. | 1:50:33 | 1:50:42
Good play by both teams. It was
looking like Samoa would make the | 1:50:42 | 1:50:49
more ground after the first and
second try but that man there, | 1:50:49 | 1:50:53
Hamish Watson, got his timing spot
on. A window of opportunity. A | 1:50:53 | 1:50:57
fraction of a second or him to get
in. He got in ahead of Piula | 1:50:57 | 1:51:02
Fa'asalele and won the turnover.
There is no point in going in early, | 1:51:02 | 1:51:09
or you are penalised from coming in
at the side. | 1:51:09 | 1:51:17
Look at that the Scots have won 12
of their observe lineouts. | 1:51:17 | 1:51:25
Back to Watson, he knows he's not
billing but he says that having the | 1:51:25 | 1:51:30
low centre of gravity works for him.
He is tremendously strong. And here | 1:51:30 | 1:51:37
is another strong player.
Matu' u. You want to keep out of the | 1:51:37 | 1:51:51
way of him. He's a big man.
Samoa with a bit more zip to them | 1:51:51 | 1:51:58
now. | 1:51:58 | 1:52:08 | |
Stuart Hogg carries that ball.
Berkeley with a kick through for Lee | 1:52:09 | 1:52:13
Jones. Samoa to run it from here. | 1:52:13 | 1:52:24
Game today! Full of explosions and
running. | 1:52:32 | 1:52:45
A good phase of play there. Scotland
coming out with territory. Fatigue | 1:52:57 | 1:53:03
is starting to come in. So long play
like that will be what Gregor | 1:53:03 | 1:53:10
Townsend wants his players to do.
There they are quickly quickly away | 1:53:10 | 1:53:20
again.
Listen to the crowd. They're loving | 1:53:20 | 1:53:26
this. A great game of rugby. A great
turnover by Samoa. | 1:53:26 | 1:53:32
Well done. | 1:53:32 | 1:53:42
Here's a big moment for three
players in the Scottish jersey. | 1:53:44 | 1:53:53
That was quite a tackle.
Once they are down, it is difficult | 1:53:53 | 1:53:58
to move a player off that ball. As
long as they are supporting their | 1:53:58 | 1:54:03
own body weight, they can hold on to
that ball and win the turnover. | 1:54:03 | 1:54:09
There is Tommy Seymour, not so
happy. In a minute four players are | 1:54:09 | 1:54:13
coming on the pitch. Two to win
their first caps. | 1:54:13 | 1:54:21
Three of them to win their first
caps! It's a big moment, isn't it? A | 1:54:21 | 1:54:27
huge moment.
Left to right, George Turner, | 1:54:27 | 1:54:32
Cornell Du Preez, Jamie Bhatti and
the man that walked out of the shot | 1:54:32 | 1:54:37
was Chris Harris. A big moment for
these lads. A lot of trust in them. | 1:54:37 | 1:54:41
On they come.
So number 17 coming on. | 1:54:41 | 1:54:50
It's Jamie Bhatti. | 1:54:50 | 1:55:01
Slaughterman in Bridge of Allen.
A really big moment for the players | 1:55:14 | 1:55:23
coming on and for the players coming
off. | 1:55:23 | 1:55:35 | |
Wait until you see Harris run.
Knocked on by How Jones. Love it | 1:55:41 | 1:55:48
when they put a tackle in.
And the other guy replaced was | 1:55:48 | 1:55:54
Stuart McInally, two tries in a
really good game in and around the | 1:55:54 | 1:55:59
set piece. This is Chris Harris.
He plays outside, centre, full back, | 1:55:59 | 1:56:06
wing.
He is on the wing. | 1:56:06 | 1:56:15
He does architecture at university.
Eligible for Scotland because of a | 1:56:15 | 1:56:19
grandmother from Edinburgh.
And there is Jamie Bhatti and George | 1:56:19 | 1:56:24
Turner. A big moment for Jamie
Bhatti bat. He's only been a | 1:56:24 | 1:56:32
professional since the summer.
As you say, he worked in an | 1:56:32 | 1:56:41
abattoir. He said through the week,
a year ago today he was not a | 1:56:41 | 1:56:47
professional player and here he is
and hopefully a moment's come. | 1:56:47 | 1:56:57
So, what was the Edinburgh front
row, as been replaced by the Glasgow | 1:56:57 | 1:57:05
Warriors front row. | 1:57:05 | 1:57:15
Melani Matavao to Lemi off the
left-wing. Melani Matavao has | 1:57:31 | 1:57:37
Fa'asalele around the corner.
There is the penalty. | 1:57:37 | 1:57:51
Again, the referees quick on the
call. As soon as you make the | 1:57:59 | 1:58:03
tackle, you have to get out of the
way to promote the quick play of the | 1:58:03 | 1:58:07
ball. We likes a spectators, we want
to see a quick play of rugby. George | 1:58:07 | 1:58:15
Turner is known for his physicality.
Scotland are looking to wrestle | 1:58:15 | 1:58:23
control back of the game. Obviously
Samoa scored last. They have had a | 1:58:23 | 1:58:30
little successen in the pick and go.
Ioane is coming off. | 1:58:30 | 1:58:38
The last Test was June 2016. A
revelation that Sale is being | 1:58:38 | 1:58:49
replaced by Trevor Nyakane.
He started in a win over Scotland in | 1:58:49 | 1:58:55
2013. So a few changes. | 1:58:55 | 1:59:07
So, Treviranus has the ball.
Oh, Samoa! Right up to the Scottish | 1:59:08 | 1:59:19
line there. Is the blue jerseys.
More of that pick and go. They are | 1:59:19 | 1:59:25
hammering at the door. Is there
anybody there to protect the line? | 1:59:25 | 1:59:31
Another pick and go. Tim
Nanai-Williams! Oh, Tim | 1:59:31 | 1:59:35
Nanai-Williams! Just went through
like a surgeon's knife! Well he | 1:59:35 | 1:59:41
skipped by his cousin, Sony Bill but
skipped through the white jerseys of | 1:59:41 | 1:59:49
the Scottish defence did Tim
Nanai-Williams. One of the great | 1:59:49 | 1:59:52
rugby players lighting up the field.
He has been on fire that Number 10 | 1:59:52 | 1:59:59
jersey. It's a good pass. A wide
pass. He has the incission and the | 1:59:59 | 2:00:05
speed to get over the line. He's a
wonderful ball player and talent, | 2:00:05 | 2:00:11
Tim Nanai-Williams.
He got that after direct play. | 2:00:11 | 2:00:27
Tim Nanai-Williams, and Bundiyaki
grew.in the same find, one is | 2:00:27 | 2:00:33
playing for Samoa, one is playing
for Ireland. And Tim Nanai-Williams | 2:00:33 | 2:00:36
has the mark of sheer quality. Here
he goes. | 2:00:36 | 2:00:41
Converts his try. | 2:00:41 | 2:00:49
It was well scored and most teams
when they go close to the line, keep | 2:00:49 | 2:00:54
the ball in there. They don't roll
the dice with the risk of going | 2:00:54 | 2:01:00
wider. The pass came out to Tim
Nanai-Williams and he sliced through | 2:01:00 | 2:01:03
and scored near to the post. No
hanging around with the kick off | 2:01:03 | 2:01:06
either.
Kicked out field. Scotland trying to | 2:01:06 | 2:01:11
keep the ball in play. | 2:01:11 | 2:01:21
Cornell Du Preez, number 20, is on.
Jones has done well to skip by the | 2:01:28 | 2:01:36
first couple of tackles. Longer ball
too. A brand-new front rower in the | 2:01:36 | 2:01:42
shape of Turner. Yes, good decision.
More consistency from Nic Berry. A | 2:01:42 | 2:01:55
good tackle from the Samoans. I
think it is number 18 that went off | 2:01:55 | 2:02:01
his feet in around the contact. A
corner. It is consistent refereeing. | 2:02:01 | 2:02:06
Let the ball be there to be played.
Drops another corner and I wonder if | 2:02:06 | 2:02:12
we will see another drive? Nic Berry
is saying that the Samoan player was | 2:02:12 | 2:02:25
lying on a player. Turner then. Yes,
Pete Horne coming on as is Pyrgos. | 2:02:25 | 2:02:47
They played their part. New Zealand
next week, of course. Yes, they | 2:02:47 | 2:02:52
played their part. Sharp as ever. A
lot of experience coming on between | 2:02:52 | 2:03:00
Pyrgos and Horne. Pyrgos wants it.
Pyrgos gives it to Horne. To Huw | 2:03:00 | 2:03:11
Jones. The other forwards are into a
ruck. Pyrgos to Du Preez. Very well | 2:03:11 | 2:03:28
structured. A little kick ahead from
Horne and it has jumped into Jones' | 2:03:28 | 2:03:33
hands. Alex Dunbar! Oh, a delicate
kick it was from Horne. Jones, Jones | 2:03:33 | 2:03:46
was there and Dunbar using all that
effort powered over. There were some | 2:03:46 | 2:03:55
beautiful pieces of detail and
execution in this. Scotland go | 2:03:55 | 2:03:58
forward and when it came out to
Horne, the attacking kick. Jones. | 2:03:58 | 2:04:04
Watch this, he picks up the loose
ball. He is under pressure and pops | 2:04:04 | 2:04:08
it in. The power from Alex Dunbar.
There is beauty in that and there is | 2:04:08 | 2:04:14
brawn and when you put it together,
you get a cracking try! Dunbar has a | 2:04:14 | 2:04:19
lot to do. Oh crikey, he is in
between two. Watch this, Dunbar gets | 2:04:19 | 2:04:23
the ball. He has to go through Piula
Faasalele who turns, Piula Faasalele | 2:04:23 | 2:04:28
lines them up. Dunbar threw a good
score. I'm told this is a sell-out | 2:04:28 | 2:04:35
crowd. I think Gabby said that
before, but we have got a sell-out | 2:04:35 | 2:04:42
crowd of 67122. I'm not sure that's
a sell-out. 67144. That's the | 2:04:42 | 2:04:49
capacity. So sell-out crowd and
Horne runs back after what was a | 2:04:49 | 2:04:57
delicate kick. It was a really nice
attacking kick. Left foot, of course | 2:04:57 | 2:05:03
and the pick up from Lay Jones and
the awareness under pressure and | 2:05:03 | 2:05:09
Dunbar drove over the line for
Scotland's fifth try. What's your | 2:05:09 | 2:05:13
take, Chris? This is a sell out
crowd of 67,000. I think they were | 2:05:13 | 2:05:21
selling tickets for £1 for children?
I think it's great. New Zealand and | 2:05:21 | 2:05:26
Australia were sold owl in July.
Three three sold out for the autumn | 2:05:26 | 2:05:29
internationals. Fantastic work. And
they are being repaid with a pretty | 2:05:29 | 2:05:37
good Scottish performance. That's
the offload almost up there. In goes | 2:05:37 | 2:05:43
Kieron Fonotia. Oh, that's another
try, I think. Well, they all think | 2:05:43 | 2:05:47
they've scored. Is that Kieron
Fonotia, the big centre? | 2:05:47 | 2:05:53
I think it is. The kick off wasn't
taken. It was more to the sub hooker | 2:05:53 | 2:06:01
made really good in-roads. That's
the line there. From here, it is a | 2:06:01 | 2:06:06
really quick pick and go.
It is Kieron Fonotia. Getting in | 2:06:06 | 2:06:12
there before the defence. It comes
from momentum. That line breaker. | 2:06:12 | 2:06:16
Let's see it again. Then the
offload. After Scotland scoring | 2:06:16 | 2:06:22
their fifth try, Samoa score a
fourth within a couple of minutes. | 2:06:22 | 2:06:26
This game is not over. That's Hisa
Sasagi. It is the hooker and the | 2:06:26 | 2:06:38
offload back to Matavao.
Here is the reaction in the Samoan | 2:06:38 | 2:06:45
coaches' box. I thought it would be
more than that. A good score. | 2:06:45 | 2:06:56
Chris, what a game we have here.
Scotland look to be dominating and | 2:06:56 | 2:07:00
running away with it. And now we are
in a 6 point game with 11 minutes | 2:07:00 | 2:07:05
left. A big cut there. He had a
great game. Cardiff centre. He has | 2:07:05 | 2:07:17
had a good game. He is dangerous and
experienced. He has defended well | 2:07:17 | 2:07:22
and worked well with Kieron Fonotia
in the centre. As you say John, | 2:07:22 | 2:07:25
Samoa are right back into this game.
As you say they've changed their | 2:07:25 | 2:07:31
tactics, Samoa. They have kicked
from their own danger area. They | 2:07:31 | 2:07:35
have kicked far more. Haven't won a
huge amount of ground with some of | 2:07:35 | 2:07:41
their kicks, but they are
transferring the pressure back to | 2:07:41 | 2:07:44
Scotland and Scotland's tries have
come... It's a great throw from | 2:07:44 | 2:07:58
George Turner, but the ball was
lost. There is a real zip to the way | 2:07:58 | 2:08:02
that Samoa are playing now. Tim
Nanai-Williams. Quickly taken by | 2:08:02 | 2:08:09
Scotland. Hogg. Hogg skips out of
that big tackle. Skips out of three | 2:08:09 | 2:08:14
tackles. Gives the ball to Watson.
Good rucking. Counterattacking. You | 2:08:14 | 2:08:24
can't counterattack wide. The Blues
are all onside. Pyrgos wants them | 2:08:24 | 2:08:38
closer. I think that's Jamie
Bhattie. Fagerson rucking. Du Preez | 2:08:38 | 2:08:47
just stays on the left-hand side.
Chip ahead by Pyrgos. | 2:08:47 | 2:08:57
They say every game is three car
crashes for every player, but this | 2:08:57 | 2:09:01
game is brutal. A tough, brave and
physical. I think the physicality | 2:09:01 | 2:09:08
and intensity is ramped up in the
second half. The first 40, opening | 2:09:08 | 2:09:14
international rugby for these guys.
Matavao with a kick. Horne. Jones. | 2:09:14 | 2:09:19
The crowd love it when he has got
the ball. That was a cut inside. We | 2:09:19 | 2:09:25
just saw Harris come off his wing.
He was looking for the short ball. | 2:09:25 | 2:09:37
Chris Jones has not got a lot of
space, but the intensity has risen | 2:09:37 | 2:09:41
in the last four or five minutes
here as the score gets closer. We | 2:09:41 | 2:09:46
have seen nine tries. Huw Jones is
one of the try scorers and gets in | 2:09:46 | 2:09:52
the outside arc again and a shot
ball to Chris Harris. He is marked | 2:09:52 | 2:09:56
well and the ball goes into touch.
Well, more substitutions. We have | 2:09:56 | 2:10:01
got Tim Swinson on. We have got
Faatiga Lemalu on. Tim Swinson, | 2:10:01 | 2:10:13
6'4", but he plays for than his
height, Swinson. | 2:10:13 | 2:10:26
A good shift from Ben Toolis. He
makes his vital two or three meters. | 2:10:29 | 2:10:46
Matavao at 9. That's a loose kick.
Hogg. Is smashed. It was well taken | 2:10:46 | 2:10:57
by Stuart McInally. It is difficult
to -- Stuart Hogg. Pyrgos to Du | 2:10:57 | 2:11:03
Preez. Pyrgos looks left. They've
opened it up a bit. Horne. Oh, | 2:11:03 | 2:11:10
Jones. Hugh Jones every time he gets
the ball, he makes yards. Jonny | 2:11:10 | 2:11:15
Gray. Pyrgos. Dunbar. Bhattie, Jamie
Bhattie, another carry. Quicker ball | 2:11:15 | 2:11:28
to Horne. Horne to Hogg. Hogg to
Wilson. Wilson did some abrasive | 2:11:28 | 2:11:35
tackles. There is a Simonian down
mid-field. Out the back door. Horne. | 2:11:35 | 2:11:39
Oh, Dunbar. Gorgeous hands. Kick
ahead. This is another chase. There | 2:11:39 | 2:11:49
is a whole stack of Scots up there.
Jones. Peter Horne. Samoa do well to | 2:11:49 | 2:11:57
win this. Matavao. Real pressure. Du
Preez. A long ball. Hogg. Hogg. | 2:11:57 | 2:12:24
Contact. Pyrgos and Du Preez again.
Peter Hogg. Du Preez with a break at | 2:12:24 | 2:12:38
the offload. A Glasgow Warrior.
Warrior with a try that was needed | 2:12:38 | 2:12:45
so badly. Fantastic try for Peter
Horne and it's an important one for | 2:12:45 | 2:12:51
Scotland as well. That came from a
long, long period where two touches | 2:12:51 | 2:12:56
from Cornell Du Preez. One was a
one-handed take. That was his | 2:12:56 | 2:13:00
second. Back inside to Peter Horne
working so hard on the inside to | 2:13:00 | 2:13:05
attack the space and have legs. That
was a long pass to Stuart Hogg who | 2:13:05 | 2:13:09
started the counterattack. This was
after a minute-and-a-half of play | 2:13:09 | 2:13:12
and we will see a great view here of
Du Preez dropping to the first | 2:13:12 | 2:13:17
receiver. Knowing what he is doing.
Knowing there is space on the inside | 2:13:17 | 2:13:20
and getting the call from Peter
Horne and he got that 20 meters run | 2:13:20 | 2:13:24
in and dives over. Fantastic score
for Scotland. That's a Gregor | 2:13:24 | 2:13:29
Townsend trademark, the ball nine to
ten and the little inside ball on | 2:13:29 | 2:13:33
the drifting defence. Yeah, it comes
from having the ability, but also | 2:13:33 | 2:13:38
the confidence to keep playing when
you're fatigued, keep going, keep | 2:13:38 | 2:13:44
the ball alive and keep probing and
the space will come. | 2:13:44 | 2:13:56
Well, there is Peter Horne. He made
his debut off the bench in the | 2:14:01 | 2:14:05
defeat to Samoa in 2013. This is the
try as you say, Chris, that little | 2:14:05 | 2:14:10
delightful inside pass from Du
Preez. Horne pinned his ears back. | 2:14:10 | 2:14:18
Du Preez straightened up. He
couldn't slide off him and he fed | 2:14:18 | 2:14:21
that soft touch inside to Peter
Horne who raced by. | 2:14:21 | 2:14:32
Hisa Sasagi. Matavao. | 2:14:49 | 2:15:01
It has been solid defending. Matt
Taylor will be happy in the coaches | 2:15:02 | 2:15:06
group. Lemalu. Picked and go. What a
little try this is. Ofisa Treviranus | 2:15:06 | 2:15:21
ignored the plan. That's initiative,
every time you think Scotland are | 2:15:21 | 2:15:24
creeping ahead this happens. Well,
that's just an experienced try, | 2:15:24 | 2:15:27
isn't it? They have had a lot of
success, Samoa. There is a big carry | 2:15:27 | 2:15:33
up the mid-field. Straight over the
top of the ball. The first place you | 2:15:33 | 2:15:37
should try to defend and Ofisa
Treviranus is very experienced and | 2:15:37 | 2:15:43
he knew the space was right over the
top of the ball. Still the Samoans | 2:15:43 | 2:15:48
come back. That's their fifth try of
the afternoon. | 2:15:48 | 2:16:01
Well, there is the man that just
scored the try and this is how he | 2:16:01 | 2:16:04
did it. It's the speed of the pick
and go. As soon as he is there, he's | 2:16:04 | 2:16:09
up and over. Hard to do when there
is bodies in and around the body | 2:16:09 | 2:16:12
with skill to pick up full pace and
will he get a bigger reaction this | 2:16:12 | 2:16:18
time? A wee bit! | 2:16:18 | 2:16:28
Tim Nanai-Williams. He has knocked
the ball on. He is hurt in the | 2:16:44 | 2:16:51
process, Tim Nanai-Williams.
Scotland had the ball. Swinson with | 2:16:51 | 2:16:55
the barge. Pyrgos screaming at his
players to get around the corner and | 2:16:55 | 2:17:00
make the yards. One offload too
many. There is a minute-and-a-half | 2:17:00 | 2:17:06
left. Yes, Samoa will win this match
if they score seven points. | 2:17:06 | 2:17:18
Tim Nanai-Williams. He was out
earlier on and plenty of Samoans out | 2:17:18 | 2:17:24
on the right. Piula Faasalele. A
penalty to Samoa. That's a | 2:17:24 | 2:17:40
consistent penalty. He is looking
for real, clean presentation of the | 2:17:40 | 2:17:43
ball. Getting away. Well, Chris, it
is time for you to tell us who do | 2:17:43 | 2:17:51
you think is the Man of the Match?
Well, there have, there were classic | 2:17:51 | 2:17:56
performances. The second half really
ramped up. | 2:17:56 | 2:18:04
Tim Nanai-Williams for Samoa, but my
Man of the Match is Scotland's | 2:18:04 | 2:18:09
number two, double try scorer,
McInally. His basics around the set | 2:18:09 | 2:18:17
piece was outstanding. There he is,
concerned about the state of score | 2:18:17 | 2:18:21
as we go into the last 20 seconds.
The Man of the Match is Stuart | 2:18:21 | 2:18:28
McInally.
It looks as if Tim Swinson has got | 2:18:28 | 2:18:36
himself there inn there. This is
going to be a scrum to Scotland. We | 2:18:36 | 2:18:41
talk about all the play, but if you
don't win your scrums, you don't win | 2:18:41 | 2:18:47
your line-outs, you don't win
internationals. No, that's where | 2:18:47 | 2:18:50
little moments like that, the
experience with Tim Swinson coming | 2:18:50 | 2:18:54
off the bench, swimming up the
middle, to stop Samoa getting the | 2:18:54 | 2:18:57
release. It was outstanding from the
experienced Glasgow Warriors second | 2:18:57 | 2:19:03
row. Scotland will be happy with so
many parts of the game, but | 2:19:03 | 2:19:10
disappointed to lose five tries. The
Samoans are a dangerous outfit. I | 2:19:10 | 2:19:20
think Pyrgos knows what he wants to
do which is get this ball up the | 2:19:20 | 2:19:23
park. It has been co-ordinated
performance from Gregor Townsend's | 2:19:23 | 2:19:30
first game in charge at Murrayfield.
Samoa have got to try to win this | 2:19:30 | 2:19:40
scrum. They have got to do
everything to win this scrum. Yes, | 2:19:40 | 2:19:43
and also just as we saw at the end
of the first-half, if a penalty is | 2:19:43 | 2:19:48
awarded to Samoa, they are entitled
to kick to the corner. Even though | 2:19:48 | 2:19:57
the clock is in red. So if Scotland
can have discipline in their scrum | 2:19:57 | 2:20:00
and get the ball to the field,
that's it over. They have been so | 2:20:00 | 2:20:07
brave and courageous that they have
come back and met every single | 2:20:07 | 2:20:10
challenge. Let's see what the dying
seconds bring them. Vital scrummage. | 2:20:10 | 2:20:20
It looks as though the Scots have
it. Henry hir goes puts the ball off | 2:20:20 | 2:20:28
the pitch and I know one person who
will be delighted, that's that man | 2:20:28 | 2:20:32
on the left, Gregor Townsend. A
great player. Now as a coach of | 2:20:32 | 2:20:38
Scotland, he presides over a team
that he took a gamble. He put all | 2:20:38 | 2:20:44
his subs on but, they have beaten
the Samoans: It is a fantastic | 2:20:44 | 2:20:50
victory for Scotland. 11 tries and
four new caps on his side, but there | 2:20:50 | 2:20:58
will be moments he won't be happy.
Scotland extend their winning run at | 2:20:58 | 2:21:02
Murrayfield to five games in a row.
It is their best record. Up next, | 2:21:02 | 2:21:11
the All Blacks. The final score,
Scotland 44, Samoa 38. | 2:21:11 | 2:21:18
the All Blacks. The final score,
Scotland 44, Samoa 38. | 2:21:18 | 2:21:20
These two teams when they meet, you
can guarantee there will be some | 2:21:20 | 2:21:24
points. 82 today and an impressive
performance and comeback from Samoa, | 2:21:24 | 2:21:30
Dan, there was a point where it
could have gone either way and it | 2:21:30 | 2:21:33
looked like Scotland after ten
minutes might have run riot. I'm | 2:21:33 | 2:21:39
proud of the performance the boys
put in today for their families and | 2:21:39 | 2:21:42
for our people back at home after
the week they've had. To turn up and | 2:21:42 | 2:21:48
put in that heart. Money can't buy
that sort of performance. Saying | 2:21:48 | 2:21:52
that, I think, you know, a bit more
support is something they would like | 2:21:52 | 2:21:59
to win. A nation very pleased with
itself. And Gregor Townsend, | 2:21:59 | 2:22:06
Scotland are on great run. This is
the kind of run they haven't had | 2:22:06 | 2:22:13
since 88, 89. Really good. I don't
think Gregor will be particularly | 2:22:13 | 2:22:18
happy with the performance. The guy
walking behind him in that shot | 2:22:18 | 2:22:21
there is Matt Taylor, the defence
coach won't be happy, I don't think | 2:22:21 | 2:22:26
with the overall structure. 30
points conceded. It seemed any time | 2:22:26 | 2:22:31
that Samoa got inside Scotland's 22,
they scored and that's not what you | 2:22:31 | 2:22:35
want. Let's hear from the Man of the
Match, Stewart McInally who is with | 2:22:35 | 2:22:39
Sonia. Stewart, are you having to
pinch yourself a little bit, two | 2:22:39 | 2:22:43
tries in only your fourth start for
Scotland on Gregor Townsend's first | 2:22:43 | 2:22:47
home game. It is not a bad way to
go? Delighted with the win. It is a | 2:22:47 | 2:22:51
benefit from the work the forwards
do in front of me and luckily I am | 2:22:51 | 2:22:55
at the back. We're massively pleased
to win. We scored 44 points which is | 2:22:55 | 2:23:00
great, but there will be a lot to
work on going into next week. | 2:23:00 | 2:23:04
Regular hookies, Brown and Ford not
here. Have you surprised yourself | 2:23:04 | 2:23:08
with how well it has gone for you
today? It's a hard question. I'm | 2:23:08 | 2:23:15
just really pleased to be playing,
you know, I didn't play for Scotland | 2:23:15 | 2:23:18
last year. For me, it's a great
feeling to be here in front of a | 2:23:18 | 2:23:22
sell out crowd. It is a record crowd
against Samoa, so we appreciate | 2:23:22 | 2:23:27
everyone come we are pleased we
could get the win. You have got | 2:23:27 | 2:23:32
Richard working for you at
Edinburgh. How much is he helping | 2:23:32 | 2:23:36
you evolve as a hooker? It is great.
He put a lot of faith in me and it | 2:23:36 | 2:23:41
has helped my game massively. I'm
really enjoying it at Edinburgh and | 2:23:41 | 2:23:44
it is great to take that to Scotland
as well. Congratulations, you are | 2:23:44 | 2:23:50
the Eden Mills Man of the Match.
Cheers. He had his first | 2:23:50 | 2:23:53
international try in the first-half
and his second in the second half, | 2:23:53 | 2:23:57
Stewart McInally. Richard took him
from flanker to hooker and today, he | 2:23:57 | 2:24:02
has given himself a great platform
to make a stake, hasn't he? I have | 2:24:02 | 2:24:08
been really impressed with Stewart
McInally for many years, but he | 2:24:08 | 2:24:12
never really had the chance. He made
that conversion a number of years | 2:24:12 | 2:24:16
ago. Andy Robinson was the coach
that got him there and it's | 2:24:16 | 2:24:21
vindicated. At the start of the
second half, it was 20-10. This was | 2:24:21 | 2:24:27
a couple of minutes into the second
half. It is really good structure, | 2:24:27 | 2:24:31
the forwards got into good shape. We
said in the studio, it is a try. | 2:24:31 | 2:24:35
Right there, we knew it was coming
because there was no way Samoa could | 2:24:35 | 2:24:39
stop it, at that point the
conversion was made 32-10, the game | 2:24:39 | 2:24:43
was done. We said this is where
Scotland would pull away, fair play | 2:24:43 | 2:24:48
to Samoa coming back, but good
control. McInally in the pocket | 2:24:48 | 2:24:52
there with the control in front of
him and drove over. At that stage it | 2:24:52 | 2:24:56
was easy time for Scotland. But like
you say, every time Scotland scored, | 2:24:56 | 2:25:01
Samoa came back and every time there
was an opportunity, they capitalised | 2:25:01 | 2:25:04
on a mistake that led to it from
Scotland. Piula Faasalele with the | 2:25:04 | 2:25:08
comeback try then to just put Samoa
back into the game. Yes, I think, | 2:25:08 | 2:25:14
you know, again it is great
determination and heart. It is | 2:25:14 | 2:25:17
probably questionable whether he got
the ball down or not. But again it's | 2:25:17 | 2:25:22
that pick and go and the conversion
rate in this position of the field | 2:25:22 | 2:25:26
was really good from the Samoans. I
thought we weren't in the zone | 2:25:26 | 2:25:33
enough. That comes back down,
pushing, whether they got it down | 2:25:33 | 2:25:39
there or not. The benefit of the
doubt has to go with the attacking | 2:25:39 | 2:25:42
team!
Yeah, why not? If this game was the | 2:25:42 | 2:25:47
semi-final of a Rugby World Cup with
five minutes to go, we would be more | 2:25:47 | 2:25:51
up and arms about that decision. We
are sometimes critical when we spend | 2:25:51 | 2:25:56
too long at the TMO. They could have
done with another couple there. That | 2:25:56 | 2:26:00
want conclusive. This was another
one. This is Samoa did this very | 2:26:00 | 2:26:05
very well the whole game. Scotland
were expecting this, but then it | 2:26:05 | 2:26:08
goes out and Tim Nanai-Williams, you
know, Chris Harris has come out of | 2:26:08 | 2:26:12
line, his debut. He has flown out,
if you fly out, you have got to do | 2:26:12 | 2:26:16
something and he didn't do anything
really and it was a good try. Yes, | 2:26:16 | 2:26:19
it was. As you said before, Mark
Taylor will be disappointed. You | 2:26:19 | 2:26:23
look at the numbers around the ball,
it put Harrison, you have got to | 2:26:23 | 2:26:31
take man and ball, but he was in a
difficult situation. Coming back to | 2:26:31 | 2:26:34
Dan, every time Samoa were in the
Scotland's 22, they came away with | 2:26:34 | 2:26:37
the point. Alex Dunbar for Scotland
and showing great strength here. | 2:26:37 | 2:26:43
There have been a number of
attacking kicks that Scotland did | 2:26:43 | 2:26:47
very well. This is Peter Horne. If
you're kicking in the 22 it has to | 2:26:47 | 2:26:53
hit the ground. If it is caught, it
can be marked. Jones got the ball | 2:26:53 | 2:26:58
and offloaded to Alex Dunbar who
showed | 2:26:58 | 2:27:00
and offloaded to Alex Dunbar who
showed incredible strength. Piula | 2:27:00 | 2:27:02
Faasalele is a big old unit, but Ali
Dunbar bounces him off. That was a | 2:27:02 | 2:27:07
good reaction because that brought
Scotland away again and in the | 2:27:07 | 2:27:10
studio we thought that's it,
Scotland will pull away, but no, no, | 2:27:10 | 2:27:14
Samoa came back and made it a really
competitive game. | 2:27:14 | 2:27:20
Matavao got them back into it? Yes,
I think the boys did well, keeping | 2:27:22 | 2:27:27
the offload. Particularly late in
the game and mixing it up and | 2:27:27 | 2:27:31
lifting the physicality and again it
was a short range try, the pick and | 2:27:31 | 2:27:36
go in the zone. You have got to
convert and then the boys did well | 2:27:36 | 2:27:39
here.
These guys when they are playing an | 2:27:39 | 2:27:46
offloading game, you have got to
have good body position and strength | 2:27:46 | 2:27:50
and technically really good tackles
to stop them. All the tries have | 2:27:50 | 2:27:53
been really well worked and Scotland
have not been able to do too much. | 2:27:53 | 2:27:56
This was a great try for Scotland
because this is what Scotland want | 2:27:56 | 2:28:02
and Greg, Du Preez is off the bench
and it is a great offload. A great | 2:28:02 | 2:28:07
offload. I think Samoa struggled to
get out of their half and exit. If | 2:28:07 | 2:28:13
you kick Loosly to Hoggy, he can
generate a kick ball. Cornell Du | 2:28:13 | 2:28:18
Preez is picking his head up and
dumps the ball on the inside and a | 2:28:18 | 2:28:23
good finish by Horne. There is work
to be done in defence, but Samoa | 2:28:23 | 2:28:27
played into their hands a little
bit, didn't they? A slightly more | 2:28:27 | 2:28:31
astute team might not have quite
played the game. They kept going for | 2:28:31 | 2:28:35
the kicks which weren't working. We
didn't kick well today. Let's be | 2:28:35 | 2:28:40
honest. We counted the good kicks
and there were two in the game. | 2:28:40 | 2:28:47
Work to be done for Gregor. Thank
you guys for your contributions | 2:28:49 | 2:28:52
today. I enjoyed that. I'm sure the
crowd enjoyed it too. More rugby to | 2:28:52 | 2:28:57
come on the BBC. We have Wales,
Australia on BBC Two from 4.45pm | 2:28:57 | 2:29:04
today and England, Argentina is
coming up this evening, highlights | 2:29:04 | 2:29:07
of that match at 7.30pm on BBC Two.
So, the Gregor Townsend era at | 2:29:07 | 2:29:15
Murrayfield has begun. Three wins
out of four now for the head coach. | 2:29:15 | 2:29:20
There is only the small matter of
New Zealand next week. We will see | 2:29:20 | 2:29:23
you for that one. Goodbye. | 2:29:23 | 2:29:27 |
