The Autumn Internationals reach
their conclusion as winter takes | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
hold on a fourth consecutive
Saturday for a Welsh zwaud depleted | 0:00:37 | 0:00:42
by injury and unavailability, but no
xousz today this. Is a must win | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
match for Warren Gatland's team.
Perhaps it is a good job they are | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
playing the one Southern Hemisphere
side they do know how to beat. | 0:00:49 | 0:01:03
The routine of Leigh Halfpenny. It
is over. We are all squaring it. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:10
Penalties for Wales. Wales have
beaten South Africa by 12-6 and | 0:01:10 | 0:01:17
that's what it means to the Welsh
players. The Principality Stadium at | 0:01:17 | 0:01:24
full blast. Out comes the drive. The
breakaway. A try for South Africa. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:39
It is Cassiem who scores it. A
beautiful pass. The footwork takes | 0:01:39 | 0:01:46
him over the line. And Wales have
won by 27-13. And they have beaten | 0:01:46 | 0:01:54
South Africa convincingly. So what
of today's Springboks? It is the end | 0:01:54 | 0:02:00
of a long, long season that included
record defeats by New Zealand and | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
Ireland and question marks hangover
the team and the coaching staff. Ten | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
years on from being world champions,
South African rugby is searching for | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
its place in the international
pecking order. Well, for all the | 0:02:11 | 0:02:20
issues surrounding it game, and it
was described as the most maligned | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
match, a packed Principality
Stadium. So, welcome once more. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:33
Seven days on from that fantastic,
epic, memorable occasions against | 0:02:33 | 0:02:40
the All Blacks.
Martin, how important is it for | 0:02:40 | 0:02:47
Wales to win this? I think it is
imperative they win. They have had | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
some positive performances, but
whether you like it or not, you're | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
going to get judged against the
other home nations and what they | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
have done. You look at England and
Scotland and Ireland, really | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
positive autumn series and if we
lose again today, it will be the | 0:03:01 | 0:03:06
same old, same old excuses, but the
win is the be all and end all. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
Jeremy? I think Wales, I think we
have been too nice. I have been too | 0:03:10 | 0:03:15
nice. The reality is this autumn,
performance and poor exit strategy. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:24
They created lots of opportunities
to score against New Zealand. They | 0:03:24 | 0:03:29
had 15, 12, but the skill set
suggests they are not quite good | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
enough and if they are not good
enough, you have got to start | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
reaching deeper into the pool of
players because of forced | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
circumstances rather than the
coaches going right, let's identify | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
players. They are trying to identify
in a way they can't. Today, maybe a | 0:03:43 | 0:03:52
benefit there is so many players
missing, because they might discover | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
a few jewels that they weren't
expecting? Completely. We have got a | 0:03:56 | 0:04:05
player like Passion who is coming
in. He is 30 years of age. Surely | 0:04:05 | 0:04:11
there is talent younger than that,
that they can bring it. It is | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
surprising that South Africa are as
high up because they have had an in | 0:04:14 | 0:04:19
and out season. What do you make of
what we have seen in the autumn | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
internationals? They have been a
microcosm of the hole year for South | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
Africa because it has been
inconsistent. To a minute. They were | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32
awful against Ireland. They got
better, you know, in the matches | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
leading up to what I think was a
much better performance against | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
Italy. So, they will probably sit
there and say, if a few things had | 0:04:40 | 0:04:45
gone right against Ireland, you
know, the people who are positive | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
all the time would have said that
and a couple of cynics would have | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
said it was bad from the beginning
and just because you beat France and | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
Italy well, it doesn't make it a
good end of year. This game just as | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
much for South Africa will be
crucial to end off the year on a | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
high note. It is hard to explain why
it is so many Welsh players who were | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
playing last week aren't available
this week because they play for | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
English clubs. Because of injury,
because of players not being | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
available for selection, that's a
Welsh 15 that could be taking the | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
field today if everybody was
available and in a way, in a funny | 0:05:21 | 0:05:26
kind of way, Martin, you might fancy
that team to beat the one that's on | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
the field of play? I fancy that team
over the one going out. That's the | 0:05:31 | 0:05:37
one positive we win today. With all
those guys missing, you are looking | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
one step ahead for the Six Nations.
The one positive from this autumn we | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
have exposed new players to the
highest level which the coaching | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
staff seem to be reluctant over the
last few years, there is a lot of | 0:05:50 | 0:05:56
absentees. Accepting the skill set
and what the players are capable of | 0:05:56 | 0:06:01
is another one. We have to be more
realistic about what we are watching | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
on the feel. I used to love getting
the ball. We all did. Scoring tries. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:11
Boy, we would let players have it if
they lost balls. If we pinpoint 15 | 0:06:11 | 0:06:19
Welsh players, you would say there
is many Springbok internationals who | 0:06:19 | 0:06:27
are not available today? The
management and the team have put the | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
rules together which dictate you
can't pick players that are overseas | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
under a certain amount of caps
unwillings you really, really need | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
them!
LAUGHTER | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
I don't know how the rules work. So,
I think South Africa are not doing | 0:06:41 | 0:06:56
themselves any favours being that
inconsistent. Pietersen is scoring | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
tries for Leicester. Leicester | 0:06:59 | 0:07:06
inconsistent. Pietersen is scoring
tries for Leicester. Leicester. If I | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
concentrated on that will all day, I
would be very negative. I would say, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:17
there is five plus two or three
others that are the future. They | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
probably will be in three or four
years time, they will play ahead of | 0:07:21 | 0:07:30
du Plessis. That's assuming they
stay in South Africa. If they are, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:35
can we play them? Do we have to play
games like that at the end of the | 0:07:35 | 0:07:41
season every year? Maybe. There are
lots of Springbok fans in Cardiff. A | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
few of them had a great month or so
on a Northern Hemisphere tour going | 0:07:45 | 0:07:50
to Dublin, Paris. It must have been
a confusing and frustrating journey | 0:07:50 | 0:07:56
because as Bobby was saying their
performances have been inconsistent | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00
and unfathomable. If we look at the
results for the Springboks | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
throughout 2017, that couldn't be
better illustrated by by the two | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
record defeats against New Zealand
and Ireland, but on the other hand, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
if you look at the second match
against the All Blacks where they | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
lost by a point, that was a heroic
defeat when New Zealand scored with | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
the last play of the game, but
whatever, it cannot be easy being | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
the Springboks coach.
You are at the end of a long and at | 0:08:21 | 0:08:29
times difficult season for South
Africa. How is morale against the | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
players? Morale is very, very good
in the camp, I must say. It has been | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
a great year for us in many ways
with the new group of players, only | 0:08:35 | 0:08:40
lost three from the 12 so far and
tonight is an opportunity to finish | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
on a good note. I think this game is
between us having a fantastic | 0:08:44 | 0:08:50
Christmas holiday, you know, but no,
look, we've developed well as a team | 0:08:50 | 0:08:56
during this year and we will learn
lessons again and savr two good | 0:08:56 | 0:09:01
wins, one against France and Italy,
that we are looking you cans make | 0:09:01 | 0:09:08
sure we get the W tonight. How tough
is for you to concentrate on the job | 0:09:08 | 0:09:14
when there is speculation around
your future? Speculation is the | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
word. My focus is on this test and a
great team environment. The boys are | 0:09:17 | 0:09:23
really enjoying themselves, you
know, they're happy to be part of | 0:09:23 | 0:09:29
the Springboks. We have overseas
based players who have been with us | 0:09:29 | 0:09:35
for two weeks and they are confident
about the Springboks going forward. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
What have you seen in the wins over
France and Italy that you hope to | 0:09:38 | 0:09:43
build on today against Wales? There
are a few things that we have got to | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
make sure we get right. Our
discipline has to be outstanding. It | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
will be a set piece battle against
the Welsh, you know. We're here to | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
win the Test Match. It's not about
playing pretty and good entertaining | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
rugby, it's to win a Test Match and
we have spoken a lot about winning | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
rugby over the last couple of weeks,
so hopefully we can play in the | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
right areas tonight and take
opportunities. Thank you. Thank you. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:12
There is a really good atmosphere in
here today and a certain positivity | 0:10:12 | 0:10:16
off the back of last week as well.
We will talk about Wales in a moment | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
or two. But that interview, if I was
to say to you Bobby, that's one of | 0:10:19 | 0:10:26
the poisoned chalices of rugby, all
the players being unavailable and | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
having to factor in the fact that
selection has to be tempered by the | 0:10:30 | 0:10:35
roe qa requirements. Is that a job
that nobody really wants? Look, | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
you've touched on two or three
things there. Everybody wants to | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
coach at the highest possible level,
which is so right. It has got so | 0:10:41 | 0:10:46
many contributing factors that are
out of your own control as the coach | 0:10:46 | 0:10:50
that it makes it so difficult to
achieve. Alistair is one of the | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
nicest guys of world rugby. He is a
real team man. He has been in three | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
or four coaching structures that I
played with. He is a quality | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
individual who understanding team
culture which is rare these days, | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
you know, and his search for
excellence in the little things that | 0:11:06 | 0:11:11
his nines and tens are doing have
always allowed him to achieve. Now | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
he looks as if he is a man clinging
on, holding on to some faint hope | 0:11:14 | 0:11:19
that a win here will keep him his
job, you know and because of those | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
contributing factors. Things like
the quota system. We are at a young | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
democracy. The rainbow nation was
South Africa. Where are we now? | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
Maybe we have got to repair some of
the damages of apartheid. The seven | 0:11:29 | 0:11:39
aside team are 60% black and
coloured players and achieving. You | 0:11:39 | 0:11:44
can't hide it. All of our colours,
it doesn't matter, we are a mixed | 0:11:44 | 0:11:51
race, mixed integrated country, so I
think this is about leadership from | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
the coaching staff and leadership
from the senior levels of South | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
African rugby and that's what puts
pressure on the people below them. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
They need to get this right. Almost
a yes or no answer. If South Africa | 0:12:01 | 0:12:06
lose today, do you think the South
Africa r South African coach loses | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
his job? I'm not close enough to the
corridors of power, but what I've | 0:12:09 | 0:12:14
heard, I would say it is almost
definite if he loses today, he will | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
be on his way. But to whom do you
turn? They have got a new Director | 0:12:17 | 0:12:24
of Rugby. You never lose it, you
just fire the coach and chuck | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
someone else. He does have a captain
as a rock that he can rely on and he | 0:12:28 | 0:12:33
is an extraordinary man and in terms
of physique, he is a rock. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
Literally. Well, he throws rocks
around and throws weights around. He | 0:12:36 | 0:12:42
is a big strong guy. He has a
tremendous relationship with the | 0:12:42 | 0:12:55
players. About ten players from the
opposition sprint towards him when | 0:12:55 | 0:13:00
he gets the ball and he loves the
collision. A tremendous leader. I | 0:13:00 | 0:13:06
remember him breaking on the scene.
He was a lot skinnier, six or eight | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
kilos lighter than what he is now.
He was athletic. He got around the | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
park. He needs to develop his game.
I couldn't agree more. He had it | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
before. You look at the difference
between him and the locks. Look at | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
the size of the by accepts which is
tremendous. I heard they have had to | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
ship in new weights because in the
different gyms that they were going | 0:13:26 | 0:13:31
to, the Springboks doesn't have
enough to do his arm curls. Really? | 0:13:31 | 0:13:44
LAUGHTER
You mentioned the relationship he | 0:13:44 | 0:13:52
players? He came from a background
in a really poor Township. He played | 0:13:52 | 0:13:58
rugby at a local club where one of
the coaches said, "Listen, this kid | 0:13:58 | 0:14:02
has got it." He got a scholarship
and ended up being head boy of that | 0:14:02 | 0:14:06
school and he has come through and
was captain and brought his own | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
family and other families around him
out of that township and contributes | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
to the way they grow up. He is an
absolute leader. There is a lot of | 0:14:13 | 0:14:18
pressure on him to be the Springbok
captain. I like the fact that he is | 0:14:18 | 0:14:22
not yet because he has seven or
eight years rugby in him. He is | 0:14:22 | 0:14:27
going to learn about the world and
he could be one of South Africa's | 0:14:27 | 0:14:31
great rugby leaders. He is the
symbol of transformation? Very well | 0:14:31 | 0:14:36
put. A tremendous guy off the field.
He does the spot defence tackle | 0:14:36 | 0:14:41
close to the ruck which is something
he is better than anyone else in the | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
world. Let's move on to Wales. There
is so much talk about the new Wales | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
during the course of the autumn
internationals. I wonder what | 0:14:47 | 0:14:52
Jonathan Davies made of the last
three weeks, he is with Sonia. Let's | 0:14:52 | 0:14:59
talk Jonathan about Dan Biggar and
the way Wales are looking to evolve | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
their game. Is he the right fit at
fly-half if they want to do that? | 0:15:02 | 0:15:07
Everyone knows what Dan brings to
the side, but if they are going to | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
evolve their game and play a more
expansive game maybe I think | 0:15:11 | 0:15:21
Priestland are a better fit. Dan
could play maybe 12, but he has Owen | 0:15:21 | 0:15:26
Williams. So I think that's maybe
what you need to look at for the Six | 0:15:26 | 0:15:31
Nations. When you talk about who is
going to play at 10 and 12 for eng. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:36
Much in the way, sorry, Wales, much
in the way that England have stuck | 0:15:36 | 0:15:44
with their players. Their attack
options comes from the full-back. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:52
They just pipe in all the time. If
you're trying to play the style they | 0:15:52 | 0:15:57
are playing now, you need the
attacking threat from the full-backs | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
or Six Nations. Williams is back.
George North is back and then the | 0:16:01 | 0:16:08
10, 12 axises will be crucial and
the selection will be very, very | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
interesting. Is there room for Leigh
Halfpenny? Let's see happens. Thank | 0:16:10 | 0:16:15
you. This is the final chance to
combine rugby with Christmas | 0:16:15 | 0:16:23
shopping. Yes, lots of players are
missing, but when the chance to | 0:16:23 | 0:16:27
claim a really big scalp presents
itself, the opportunity slips from | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
their grasp as it did so agonisingly
seven days ago. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:41
64 long years have passed since
Wales beat these All Blacks. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:50
Wales take the lead. Here is danger.
The All Blacks have been on the | 0:16:50 | 0:17:00
defensive, but here they go again.
It is another brilliant finish by | 0:17:00 | 0:17:04
the winger.
Williams for the line. What a try! | 0:17:04 | 0:17:17
Excellent work from Alun Wyn Jones.
New Zealand stretch away. He read | 0:17:17 | 0:17:27
the pass and scores the try. The
captain is off for ten minutes. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:34
Gareth Davies scores!
But Wales are back in this. Oh, the | 0:17:34 | 0:17:44
speed. Brilliant. 30 games in
succession, the All Blacks have done | 0:17:44 | 0:17:52
it again. Warren what's more
important, the result or the | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
performance? Both, I think. Look, it
is important that Test Match rugby | 0:17:56 | 0:18:01
is about winning. We think we've
played good rugby so far in the | 0:18:01 | 0:18:08
campaign and we have got to
capitalise and turn it into points | 0:18:08 | 0:18:12
and get a win. We have seen a heavy
defeat to New Zealand and losing to | 0:18:12 | 0:18:17
Ireland on this tour. What have you
made of this team? I think they are | 0:18:17 | 0:18:21
like a lot of teams going through
transition and everyone is thinking | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
about the next two years and
building to the World Cup and | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
getting some depth. So, yeah, they
have had a couple of disappointing | 0:18:26 | 0:18:32
performances, but a win against
France was positive and a good win | 0:18:32 | 0:18:36
against Italy. What do you hope to
see from Passion in the 12 jersey as | 0:18:36 | 0:18:42
Wales look to evolve the style of
play? Staying connected with the 10, | 0:18:42 | 0:18:48
with the forwards. He brings a
reasonable amount of experience. We | 0:18:48 | 0:18:53
are looking for a voice from him
even though his first cap. He has | 0:18:53 | 0:19:02
experienced New Zealand Super Rugby
and we are looking for the voice and | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
being confident in the way he goes
and plays. Good luck today. Cheers, | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
thank you.
Well, if this match was played | 0:19:08 | 0:19:17
tomorrow, Parkes would not have been
available. He will wear the number | 0:19:17 | 0:19:22
12 jersey and becomes Wales' first
centre Parkes! They have come. They | 0:19:22 | 0:19:30
have qualified or not. There has
been the odd less than thorough | 0:19:30 | 0:19:34
background check.
The Kiwi Welsh, long serving, still | 0:19:34 | 0:19:43
playing and the latest who qualifies
by residency on this very day. When | 0:19:43 | 0:19:49
you came three years ago to Wales,
was this part of a long-term plan? | 0:19:49 | 0:19:53
No, it wasn't. Things have just gone
really well. I managed to play all | 0:19:53 | 0:19:58
right for the Scarlets and when I
was looking at resigning, this time | 0:19:58 | 0:20:02
last year, there was whispers this
might happen. This is a huge | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
opportunity. So why wouldn't you,
you know, have a shot? There are | 0:20:05 | 0:20:10
some who question the hole validity
of the idea of somebody who spent | 0:20:10 | 0:20:17
three years in the country and plays
international rugby? I can | 0:20:17 | 0:20:21
understand where they are coming
from. You can't blame the player. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
It's an opportunity and it is a
dream come true and it is a real | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
privilege and honour to be able to
go out there and wear the red jersey | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
and represent the Welsh people. How
is your Welsh coming along? It's | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
coming along all right. Rhys has
been teaching me the anthem. The | 0:20:35 | 0:20:45
pronunciation isn't the best. What
will be your over riding emotion | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
coming out of the tunnel? It is an
achievement in itself, but it is | 0:20:48 | 0:20:52
very exciting, I guess. Look, it's
something that I never thought would | 0:20:52 | 0:20:58
happen and to be given the
opportunity from the management team | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
and also the support from the
players around me as well has been | 0:21:01 | 0:21:03
huge. So, I'm just really excited
and just really get stuck in. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:12
Well, Martin, we have had this
discussion many time over the years | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
about residency. What's your take on
this? I'm probably not the most | 0:21:15 | 0:21:19
balanced person to ask about this as
somebody who lost their place to a | 0:21:19 | 0:21:24
New Zealander flanker in 1990 who
had no eligibility or criteria. The | 0:21:24 | 0:21:31
three year rule is wrong. It is too
short. You can't blame the player. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:35
You can't blame the coach. I have
seen it done in Ireland. Look, on | 0:21:35 | 0:21:43
form, he deserves to be in there. It
is farcical when you think Rhys Webb | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
wouldn't be allowed to play for
Wales this time next year and | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
somebody living in the country for
three or four years can. He knows | 0:21:51 | 0:21:56
the anthem though. We will wait and
see. It would be interesting if they | 0:21:56 | 0:22:03
had a mic under him. It is not an
easy anthem to sing. What do we | 0:22:03 | 0:22:12
think of the scrum with Webb on the
bench. Four caps on the bench. A | 0:22:12 | 0:22:22
similar player to Gareth Davies. His
service is very, very good and he | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
has been around this squad for a
while. Look, we have got depth in he | 0:22:26 | 0:22:31
Wales' scrum-half. He is a quality
player. We keep talking about | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
certain teams, Bobby, who have got a
certain style, but when you watch | 0:22:34 | 0:22:40
the Springboks play, it is hard to
define the style of rugby they play? | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
It depends what kind of rugby they
are playing at Super Rugby. The most | 0:22:44 | 0:22:50
successful South African teams had
two or three teams that are | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
competing at a high level in Super
Rugby which is a counterattacking | 0:22:54 | 0:23:05
dynamic, skill type of play. You
keep the physicality and then you | 0:23:05 | 0:23:10
have got players who can shift the
ball and who can move around and | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
finish. For me, this team is neither
here nor there, because we are not | 0:23:12 | 0:23:16
doing that well in Super Rugby and
when we get up to this level, are we | 0:23:16 | 0:23:22
physical enough? I don't think we
have gone over the level. England | 0:23:22 | 0:23:28
have been through that. Every side
goes through that. If you can't keep | 0:23:28 | 0:23:33
on selecting the same nine and ten,
Wales have that problem. South | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
Africa had it for the last few
seasons. Until that gets rubber | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
stamped and nailed down, they will
struggle and in terms of the way | 0:23:39 | 0:23:44
they play, to me, South Africa have
been one dimensional. They tried it | 0:23:44 | 0:23:49
a couple of seasons ago and it
didn't work out. I disagree with | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
Bobby, I don't think the skill
levels are high enough to compete at | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
the highest level. Martin? On the
flip side, Wales, the most | 0:23:56 | 0:24:02
successful team in Wales has been
the Scarlets. Wales are trying to | 0:24:02 | 0:24:07
emulate that. We have got players in
our Welsh team who are not used to | 0:24:07 | 0:24:12
playing... You can't turn Owen
Williams into jammy Roberts and vice | 0:24:12 | 0:24:19
versa. Play with what you have got.
You are going to say the Springboks | 0:24:19 | 0:24:24
are going to win. And you're going
to say Wales. The average points | 0:24:24 | 0:24:29
they have scored, the number of
tries they both score, statistically | 0:24:29 | 0:24:33
it should be very close. When it is
a close game, I always go for the | 0:24:33 | 0:24:37
home team. Go for Wales. I agree. I
think it will be narrow, but I think | 0:24:37 | 0:24:44
Wales will sneak in. This is a
contest which has a strange history | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
since they first met 101 years at St
Helen's in Swansea, it wasn't until | 0:24:48 | 0:24:55
1996 until Wales beat the Springboks
and that was one year after they | 0:24:55 | 0:25:00
shipped almost 100 points to them in
Pretoria. Seven of the last ten | 0:25:00 | 0:25:04
meetings have been settled by six
points or less. So this could be a | 0:25:04 | 0:25:08
very close match as well and as
Bobby alluded to earlier, there is a | 0:25:08 | 0:25:13
scent of desperation in the air
because both these sides for varying | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
reasons really have to win this.
Wales to sfinish the autumn | 0:25:16 | 0:25:21
internationals on a high and the
Springboks perhaps to save their | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
coach's job, but to go into the
winter break on an upbeat note. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:31
After the anthems, commentary on the
autumn internationals will come from | 0:25:31 | 0:25:42
Brian Moore and Eddie Butler. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45

Good afternoon. It's December. It is
red for Wales. Red for Santa! | 0:29:21 | 0:29:28
Changes in the squad for Wales.
Evans the outstanding performance | 0:29:28 | 0:29:38
this campaign. A first cap for
Parkes. Davies is the fast pass | 0:29:38 | 0:29:51
catalyst. Is that the recipe for
much needed tries? | 0:29:51 | 0:30:06
Not a vast amount of experience in
the scum. Not too many tries either. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:20
All will be direct.
Good afternoon, Brian. A quick word. | 0:30:20 | 0:30:28
I hope that Wales can capitalise on
the good work that they have done. | 0:30:28 | 0:30:33
If they can do that, the South
Africans are there for the taking | 0:30:33 | 0:30:36
but they have two defend well as
well. Hadleigh Parkes there, winning | 0:30:36 | 0:30:45
his first cap. Dan Biggar winning
his 60th today, an important | 0:30:45 | 0:30:49
milestone because it means that he
can go to clubs outside of Wales and | 0:30:49 | 0:30:56
be eligible. The French referee,
Jerome Garces. | 0:30:56 | 0:31:00
A stand-alone international match at
the end of the autumn series. Wales | 0:31:09 | 0:31:14
against South Africa. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
WHISTLE | 0:31:19 | 0:31:21
Dan Biggar goes left... | 0:31:22 | 0:31:30
Steven Kitshoff is the prop, towards
the middle of the field. Scrum half | 0:31:34 | 0:31:45
Ross Cronje.
Leigh Halfpenny shouts, and then | 0:31:45 | 0:31:49
spins. | 0:31:49 | 0:31:50
A good tackle, Pieter-Steph du Toit. | 0:31:55 | 0:32:00
Alan Shingler has had a good series
so far. Jesse Kriel, ripping the | 0:32:06 | 0:32:15
ball from his grasp. The Welsh
hooker, Kristian Dacey. Kevin Owens | 0:32:15 | 0:32:23
out with a bad back. The ball goes
high into the Springbok half... | 0:32:23 | 0:32:33
Davies and Steff Evans outside of
him. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36 | |
Evans, for himself to chase. It
goes, Coetzee, doing well. The | 0:32:36 | 0:32:45
Springboks under pressure in their
own 22. Getting the ball away. I | 0:32:45 | 0:32:51
would imagine we would be seeing
more aerial warfare, because South | 0:32:51 | 0:32:57
Africa can deal with that capably. A
mile away! We are underway quickly. | 0:32:57 | 0:33:07
Alun Wyn Jones, the captain again. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:14
Scott Andrews, the new player,
Hadleigh Parkes, breaking two | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
tackles. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:27
Kristian Dacey acting the playmaker,
and Dan Biggar tries to get a little | 0:33:36 | 0:33:40
kick through. It comes up on the
side of the Springboks, the | 0:33:40 | 0:33:47
advantage being played. | 0:33:47 | 0:33:50
A booming clearance. I think the New
Zealand defender had it easy last | 0:33:53 | 0:34:05
week, in all of the possession that
Wales had. Little kicks, I would | 0:34:05 | 0:34:09
like to see the backs getting
involved more. Up against the bigger | 0:34:09 | 0:34:13
men. Quick feet, getting over the
tackle line. A green and knock-on at | 0:34:13 | 0:34:24
the line-out. Talking about that
attack, it starts with how the | 0:34:24 | 0:34:30
forwards carried. You have a
Springbok defence one-on-one and | 0:34:30 | 0:34:34
they will hit you on the gain line.
If you can flow just before the | 0:34:34 | 0:34:39
tackle, throwing inside and play the
ball and get over the gain line, | 0:34:39 | 0:34:43
then things are possible. See how
the scrum rows are. The front three | 0:34:43 | 0:34:51
there. It will be very interesting. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:53
Aled Davies, to feed the scrum.
Steven Kitshoff on the near side | 0:34:59 | 0:35:04
against the returning Scott Andrews.
It suddenly spins around. Answering | 0:35:04 | 0:35:10
your question first, before we talk
about the scrum, they had to square | 0:35:10 | 0:35:16
up their shoulders and engage
defenders but if they come up quick, | 0:35:16 | 0:35:19
have a grubber, or instead, feed the
decoy runners so you keep the inside | 0:35:19 | 0:35:26
defence on it, because if they
don't, they can go laterally all | 0:35:26 | 0:35:30
day. | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33 | |
It is a quick ball, out to Aled
Davies. A change in tactics... | 0:35:47 | 0:35:53
Hallam Amos against Coetzee! Getting
the past two Scott Williams! That's | 0:35:53 | 0:36:02
how you vary the attack. Going wide,
then you have a kick on, if you | 0:36:02 | 0:36:08
notice on the replay, locale
narrowed the defensive line is. The | 0:36:08 | 0:36:12
left-winger is so narrow. Scott
Williams, opening the scoring. There | 0:36:12 | 0:36:27
is the kick. You can see, the man
outside. Favourable bounce. Good | 0:36:27 | 0:36:35
support lines. Looking quite simple.
Watch how tight he is, the | 0:36:35 | 0:36:40
left-winger inside of the 15 metre
area. A great take and good support. | 0:36:40 | 0:36:46
A great try for Wales to start. That
should give them a lot of | 0:36:46 | 0:36:49
confidence. That will keep the South
African defence thinking. If you | 0:36:49 | 0:36:57
pull them wide, there will be gaps
inside. Tries have been so rare for | 0:36:57 | 0:37:02
Wales this year. Overall the major
nations, only Italy have scored | 0:37:02 | 0:37:06
fewer.
Leigh Halfpenny... Adding two. Wales | 0:37:06 | 0:37:21
leads 7-0. When the defence is so
narrow, the full-back Coetzee was | 0:37:21 | 0:37:28
trying to cover. An impossible job.
If you step anywhere off-line, the | 0:37:28 | 0:37:34
wrong footing will never stop you.
It's good execution by everyone. | 0:37:34 | 0:37:40
Pique, catch, the off-load and the
support. We are underway. -- the | 0:37:40 | 0:37:45
kick, and the catch. Cory Hill...
A little bit of drama of the ball. | 0:37:45 | 0:37:54
It has all settled down now. Aled
Davies towards Coetzee. The | 0:37:54 | 0:38:00
full-back catching safely. | 0:38:00 | 0:38:02
It's a turnover for Wales.
Hallam Amos in hot pursuit. A fumble | 0:38:11 | 0:38:20
by Pollard. Wales driving forward,
having scored the first try. A | 0:38:20 | 0:38:28
lovely little kick and a turnover.
Going wide with it. A lovely kick, | 0:38:28 | 0:38:34
he wants people to stay in the field
here. It does exactly that. An | 0:38:34 | 0:38:39
awkward kick but a good field
position for Wales. Faletau with the | 0:38:39 | 0:38:45
catch. Kristian Dacey re-gathers at
the back of the driving maul and | 0:38:45 | 0:38:49
comes away with it. Parkes
chasing... And Parkes scores on his | 0:38:49 | 0:38:56
first game for Wales. No idea what
defensive system South Africa are | 0:38:56 | 0:39:06
utilising there. The full-back was
nowhere to be seen. Trying to cover | 0:39:06 | 0:39:13
behind. It was absent. A huge gap,
exploited well but very poor | 0:39:13 | 0:39:23
organisation from the Springboks.
What a start to an international | 0:39:23 | 0:39:27
career, at the age of 30. The kick
again... Maybe the full-back was | 0:39:27 | 0:39:32
looking for the cross kick again?
This time, the variety, three South | 0:39:32 | 0:39:39
African players there. No commitment
to the ball. This guy gets there | 0:39:39 | 0:39:44
first. Good by Dan Biggar. Looking
for the cross kick, then surely the | 0:39:44 | 0:39:52
winger or the scrum-half is the
trailing player? Leigh Halfpenny, in | 0:39:52 | 0:40:03
front of the posts, Wales in front
on the scoreboard. Hadleigh Parkes, | 0:40:03 | 0:40:08
a good pick-up off his toes. He's
feeling good now! Wales will want a | 0:40:08 | 0:40:13
repeat of the wind from the last
restart... -- a repeat of the win. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:25
54 tackles from the South African,
Louis Schreuder. -- Lood de Jager. | 0:40:25 | 0:40:38
Davies again. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:40
Advantage, knock-on by green. A
suitable advantage played by | 0:40:44 | 0:40:51
Wales... They are going the aerial
route again. Off goes Hallam Amos. | 0:40:51 | 0:41:01
Faletau in support... He gets the
past... | 0:41:01 | 0:41:03
Wales must score if they come this
way. Hallam Amos, on his own... | 0:41:07 | 0:41:12
Amos! And important steel there.
They have numbers on the left. | 0:41:12 | 0:41:20
Turnover by Kolisi. Cronje looking
up... Coetzee, the South African, so | 0:41:20 | 0:41:32
shaky with the ball coming at them
in the air. They must have noticed | 0:41:32 | 0:41:37
weaknesses. They had variety and the
chase, all of their kicks have been | 0:41:37 | 0:41:45
brilliant. We couldn't even describe
the last two of those attempts from | 0:41:45 | 0:41:53
the Springboks as half-hearted, they
won't even close. Aaron Shingler | 0:41:53 | 0:42:00
with the pass. | 0:42:00 | 0:42:03
The captain, Alun Wyn Jones. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
Shingler twists and turns. But
stealing... | 0:42:19 | 0:42:26
Coetzee putting length on the ball
but Dan Biggar is back. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:37
Play on. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:45
Rare possession for the Springboks,
it has all been defence. They have | 0:42:58 | 0:43:02
given the ball back to Wales through
Leigh Halfpenny, as he thumps it | 0:43:02 | 0:43:09
down towards Pollard. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:11
Pollard tried a direct route, at
least it comes out on the | 0:43:17 | 0:43:20
Springboks's side. Steven Kitshoff,
nearly into the Welsh half. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:28
A rare touch for Dylan Leyds. The
Springboks still inside of their own | 0:43:33 | 0:43:44
half. An excellent, good tackle by
Cory Hill. Hadleigh Parkes and Scott | 0:43:44 | 0:43:56
Williams together. | 0:43:56 | 0:44:06
A pick-up by Francois Venter,
putting South Africa deep inside of | 0:44:06 | 0:44:11
their half. In front of the ball
carrier, scrum. Good inside | 0:44:11 | 0:44:15
defensive line speed from Wales. The
pass is outside. The runners back | 0:44:15 | 0:44:23
into the traffic. An accidental
scrum... WHISTLE | 0:44:23 | 0:44:31
We have a pause in what has been a
breathless start for Wales. So short | 0:44:31 | 0:44:36
on tries but they have scored two,
and they have had all of the | 0:44:36 | 0:44:40
possession. Just about! Yes, it has
been very good and aggressive | 0:44:40 | 0:44:47
defence. Just watch the try. Look at
this... Going wide and just watch | 0:44:47 | 0:44:56
this dummy run. There he goes. The
scrum-half holds the scrum-half, and | 0:44:56 | 0:45:01
he off-loads behind. The full-back
is too far right. Poor | 0:45:01 | 0:45:07
communication. On the blindside.
Dreadful play by the South Africans. | 0:45:07 | 0:45:11
But clever play from Wales. They
would be quite happy with that. No, | 0:45:11 | 0:45:23
no. It's not your fault. Sometimes
we miss. I'm going to ask, they seem | 0:45:23 | 0:45:32
a little lacklustre behind, South
Africa. The forwards and getting | 0:45:32 | 0:45:35
over the gain line but the line
speed is good. The problem is, if | 0:45:35 | 0:45:39
you don't have creative backs, if
you don't go forward first and the | 0:45:39 | 0:45:44
line speed is good, you are caught
behind the gain line, if the | 0:45:44 | 0:45:48
tackling is accurate. | 0:45:48 | 0:45:50
Davies goes left from the scrum and
there seems to be space out here for | 0:45:54 | 0:45:58
Steff Evans. | 0:45:58 | 0:45:59
Cory Hill, the other second row.
Good hands from Scott Andrews. Is it | 0:46:09 | 0:46:14
another steel from the Springboks?
The referee Jerome Garces says to | 0:46:14 | 0:46:21
play on. A feud turnovers in South
Africa's favours. That allows | 0:46:21 | 0:46:29
Coetzee to clear. Going high and
long, to Steff Evans. | 0:46:29 | 0:46:34
Leigh Halfpenny, acting scrum-half. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:50
Well, that is what he brings...
Faletau, he has been around a lot | 0:46:55 | 0:47:02
longer. That is what he brings. Josh
Navidi, he has had a very good | 0:47:02 | 0:47:09
November. Picked off by Gelant,
turned over by Wales. Here comes | 0:47:09 | 0:47:22
Leigh Halfpenny... Running into the
heavy Brigade who hold him up! | 0:47:22 | 0:47:30
Well, that's very good defensive
work. Wrapped up by those giant arms | 0:47:30 | 0:47:34
of Evan Etzebeth. South Africa have
done very well so far -- South | 0:47:34 | 0:47:45
Africa's Malcolm Marx has done very
well so far committee slows things | 0:47:45 | 0:47:48
down. A tremendous game for him so
far. An opportunity for two passes. | 0:47:48 | 0:47:57
You lose, you lose. Just a slight
pause... Allister Coetzee, if his | 0:47:57 | 0:48:07
job is hanging on this game, it
hasn't been a great start for his | 0:48:07 | 0:48:12
side. It's the chance to build
something from the set piece. | 0:48:12 | 0:48:24
Ross Cronje, feeding a steady scrum
for South Africa. Penalty advantages | 0:48:24 | 0:48:32
being played. Wales pulling and
turning the scrum. Wales have shown | 0:48:32 | 0:48:42
that they have the upper hand in the
scrums, they play the field | 0:48:42 | 0:48:46
position. Any five metre scrum for
the referee then, they will think it | 0:48:46 | 0:48:51
is Wales collapsing all going down.
Undoubtably true but if Wales can | 0:48:51 | 0:48:56
keep out of this situation, you can
see what I'm talking about there. At | 0:48:56 | 0:49:00
the point of Carrie. Lined up, two
people do it, straight over the gain | 0:49:00 | 0:49:05
line, and immediately it is seven
yards. Malcolm Marx... To Evan | 0:49:05 | 0:49:15
Etzebeth. South Africa trying to set
up the maul. South Africa moving | 0:49:15 | 0:49:28
ominously towards the goal line.
It's gone out of play. Maybe he knew | 0:49:28 | 0:49:36
they had the penalty advantage?
Maybe the Springbok number has lost | 0:49:36 | 0:49:42
his bearings a bit? Not much of a
number but still going into a | 0:49:42 | 0:49:48
corner. Especially when the referee
has in mind that Patchell is driving | 0:49:48 | 0:49:52
well. More likely to look at Wales
as infringing. Pollard did not get | 0:49:52 | 0:50:01
greedy with the little kick to the
corner. A ten metre line-out rather | 0:50:01 | 0:50:06
than five. I don't think he will be
happy with that kick, he should have | 0:50:06 | 0:50:11
gone for a five metre one. Five
jumpers until Kolisi takes control | 0:50:11 | 0:50:22
at the back. And Malcolm Marx. Du
Preez has the ball. What a great | 0:50:22 | 0:50:34
try. I think it is Marx again. A
one-man drive who came out, it is a | 0:50:34 | 0:50:41
sea of red shirts. Look how many
defenders he has taken with him. | 0:50:41 | 0:50:49
REFEREE: I'm sure there is hand
between the ball and the ground... | 0:50:49 | 0:50:53
Malcolm Marx was the ball-carrier.
Jerome Garces ordering the review. | 0:50:53 | 0:50:59
Try, yes or no? We are not sure.
Over to the match official... It is | 0:50:59 | 0:51:08
short there... I think he has
scored. A try, yes or no... Nothing | 0:51:08 | 0:51:20
there. Nor anything there. | 0:51:20 | 0:51:40
I'm fairly sure that ball was in
contact with the line that I do not | 0:51:48 | 0:51:52
think that you can see it. That is a
problem. A great effort by Marx. | 0:51:52 | 0:51:58
Four defenders on him. He goes,
momentum. He can place the ball | 0:51:58 | 0:52:03
immediately. Is that off the ground?
You can see the point end of the | 0:52:03 | 0:52:10
ball. Slightly up over the line but
you cannot see it down on the line. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:17
It's a difficult call. Try, yes or
no? Looking for definitive evidence | 0:52:17 | 0:52:21
one way or another. Common sense
says that he went over. | 0:52:21 | 0:52:36
Only one man knows the answer. That
is the TMO. I think that Malcolm | 0:52:38 | 0:52:45
Marx might have a view! He is behind
the post already. Waiting for a | 0:52:45 | 0:52:50
retake, isn't he? REFEREE: Yes,
please? OK, so scrum, five from | 0:52:50 | 0:53:02
Green? Not given, the ball is held
up, a five metre scrummage. | 0:53:02 | 0:53:09
Disappointment for Malcolm Marx and
Allister Coetzee. A let off for | 0:53:09 | 0:53:14
Wales. That is why I am in favour of
the officials on the field making a | 0:53:14 | 0:53:19
call and then you having to have
definitive evidence to overturn | 0:53:19 | 0:53:23
that. I think the officials should
make a call, yes or no, whether it | 0:53:23 | 0:53:28
is or it isn't. According to their
general view, how they are feeling. | 0:53:28 | 0:53:33
If there isn't evidence, for
example, he said I think it is a try | 0:53:33 | 0:53:38
but any reason I cannot award it?
Then you get benefit of the doubt. | 0:53:38 | 0:53:43
That's key, the framing of the
question, any reason why I cannot | 0:53:43 | 0:53:47
award a try? Yes or no? Thank you.
Wales are not off the hook | 0:53:47 | 0:53:53
completely. The Springbok scrum has
been powerful. The drive has been | 0:53:53 | 0:53:59
powerful. I think the three quarters
may have a little weight on their | 0:53:59 | 0:54:03
hands. There they come... Coetzee,
ordered to use it. The number eight, | 0:54:03 | 0:54:15
Santa Cruz, fixing up. -- Dan du
Preez, picking up. Steff Evans is | 0:54:15 | 0:54:25
away! Leigh Halfpenny in support.
Steff Evans... Dillyn Leyds is back | 0:54:25 | 0:54:35
for the Springboks but seconds
before they were threatening the | 0:54:35 | 0:54:39
goal-line, now they are back on
their own 22. Kitshoff, Cory Hill | 0:54:39 | 0:54:51
making the tackle. | 0:54:51 | 0:54:54
Cronje have to be careful with his
clearance. Faletau is back for | 0:54:58 | 0:55:02
Wales... A great catch by the number
rate. -- the number eight. | 0:55:02 | 0:55:12
Hallam Amos is in pursuit, again. As
is Hadleigh Parkes. While taken by | 0:55:20 | 0:55:28
Coetzee. I do not think the South
African forward would be too happy | 0:55:28 | 0:55:30
with that. It popped out, the Welsh
have done exceptionally well but it | 0:55:30 | 0:55:39
was a poor pass. In their own 22.
Three, red. | 0:55:39 | 0:55:54
Scott Andrews, the guilty party.
Don't move your arm. Don't move your | 0:55:54 | 0:56:02
arm. | 0:56:02 | 0:56:05 | |
Steff Evans. | 0:56:09 | 0:56:13
The opportunity missed, Cronje, a
safe catch from him this time. | 0:56:16 | 0:56:28
A knock-on, Wales will have to put
in a penalty. Don't move your arm. A | 0:56:40 | 0:56:47
neck roll by you. You do not move
your arm. Sorry, mate. This is what | 0:56:47 | 0:56:54
he is talking about... | 0:56:54 | 0:56:58
What do you mean a bit harsh? Yeah,
neck roll. | 0:57:05 | 0:57:18
Scott Andrews on the near side
again. Wales will want to get a | 0:57:21 | 0:57:25
quick strike and get away from here.
One for Faletau to sort out. A clear | 0:57:25 | 0:57:33
advantage to South Africa at the
scrummage. Doing well against Scott | 0:57:33 | 0:57:40
Andrews, trying to get his body...
When he gets straight like that you | 0:57:40 | 0:57:44
need to be immensely strong to cope
with the power and weight coming | 0:57:44 | 0:57:48
through. You have to do that,
turning in like Jones. Get your | 0:57:48 | 0:57:53
right shoulder down, move all of
your movement across your shoulders | 0:57:53 | 0:57:57
and once you get square like that,
you've got to be incredibly strong | 0:57:57 | 0:58:01
and chances are you won't be able to
do it like that. There is a lot of | 0:58:01 | 0:58:06
work going in from Malcolm Marx as
well. Driving in from Scott | 0:58:06 | 0:58:10
Andrews... And we mentioned getting
into the Welsh 22, that is how they | 0:58:10 | 0:58:15
do it. Getting penalised at the
halfway line. A poor throw. My | 0:58:15 | 0:58:21
goodness, the Springbok
communication is... Well, there just | 0:58:21 | 0:58:26
isn't any other moment. Leigh
Halfpenny puts it behind Coetzee. | 0:58:26 | 0:58:31
The full-back has plenty of time to
gather but it means that Wales are | 0:58:31 | 0:58:35
in control of this. In control of
this defensive situation, even | 0:58:35 | 0:58:43
though it goes long by Dan Biggar.
My word, that is a good kick! | 0:58:43 | 0:58:50
Coetzee disgusted, but that is an
immense kick from Dan Biggar. It | 0:58:50 | 0:58:55
appeared OK, but watch. Does Coetzee
take it in? There you go. Well done, | 0:58:55 | 0:59:05
Mr Barnes. | 0:59:05 | 0:59:15
A quick ball from Wales at the
line-out. Evans, wandering off the | 0:59:16 | 0:59:22
wing. Kristian Dacey, seems clear
that Wales are more comfortable here | 0:59:22 | 0:59:28
in open play then they are at the
set piece. | 0:59:28 | 0:59:40
Aaron Shingler with him. Scott
Andrews, crossing in front of him | 0:59:53 | 1:00:01
but the referee says to play on.
Malcolm Marx has to leave it. Parkes | 1:00:01 | 1:00:12
hard and straight. The quickly
delivered. | 1:00:12 | 1:00:16
Top Josh Navidi. Kitshoff makes the
tackle. Trying to work the overlap. | 1:00:22 | 1:00:32
Rob Evans. Had it and lost it. Had
it and lost it. In that position, | 1:00:32 | 1:00:40
they're building, they're building.
Two scores up. If it's slow ball, | 1:00:40 | 1:00:44
you sit-in the pocket and drop the
goal. 17 points up. You've got to | 1:00:44 | 1:00:49
take it. Very effective so far,
Wales. Inside ball from the centres. | 1:00:49 | 1:00:56
They are not pushing the passes
wide. Keeping the inside defence on | 1:00:56 | 1:01:00
so they don't post tee early. -- too
early. Looking at South Africa, | 1:01:00 | 1:01:13
there is no go to player, is there?
There is no one controlling it. It | 1:01:13 | 1:01:24
looks a comfortable day for Wales.
The South Africans will have to pick | 1:01:24 | 1:01:27
their game up. | 1:01:27 | 1:01:35
Rock solid, South Africa at the
scrimmage. It's not the greatest | 1:01:39 | 1:01:47
clearance. Such a comfortable bit of
possession. Handre Pollard didn't | 1:01:47 | 1:01:54
make that much ground. You are
looking at attack and defence when | 1:01:54 | 1:01:58
you are under pressure. Wales is
much more certain in that respect | 1:01:58 | 1:02:03
than South Africa are. | 1:02:03 | 1:02:09
Shingler. Du Toit with the tackle on
him. Rob Evans again. He is there | 1:02:13 | 1:02:27
again. Mr Marx is there again. He is
a rock, isn't he? Well, his form in | 1:02:27 | 1:02:38
Super Rugby has been fantastic. He's
a carrier. Explosive, good | 1:02:38 | 1:02:44
technically. Pollard. That's a
little bit more ambitious. Good | 1:02:44 | 1:02:55
carry again. He is having an
impressive autumn certificate. | 1:02:55 | 1:03:08
-- series. Just inside, Dan Biggar.
Malcolm Marx is the busiest player | 1:03:08 | 1:03:19
on the Springboks side. Taken down.
Pollard. Cronje. | 1:03:19 | 1:03:32
Pollard. Jesse Kriel. A bit slow for
South Africa. A chance. There is | 1:03:43 | 1:03:57
movement. That's a brilliant pick up
by Marx again. Great hands by the | 1:03:57 | 1:04:02
hooker. | 1:04:02 | 1:04:12
Wilco Louw, the other prop.
A good catch. There is a good | 1:04:27 | 1:04:42
penalty against Josh Navidi. Marx.
He has taken the rebound. He has | 1:04:42 | 1:04:53
gone forward. But there is this
penalty advantage. | 1:04:53 | 1:05:02
REFEREE: High tackle on 10, green.
Not a bad one. It was high, but not | 1:05:02 | 1:05:09
bad. He seems to be the main ball
carrier, Handre Pollard. He goes and | 1:05:09 | 1:05:15
he carries them. He plays so deep in
the pocket. He doesn't much | 1:05:15 | 1:05:20
opportunity for his centres. Well,
again, South Africa's carrying is | 1:05:20 | 1:05:26
very direct, but this is just one
inside ball. That's all it is. And | 1:05:26 | 1:05:31
not a great attempt at an tackle
going too high and you're behind the | 1:05:31 | 1:05:38
initial line and from there, a great
pick up by the hooker. But again, | 1:05:38 | 1:05:44
one simple transfer of the point of
contact. Back inside running against | 1:05:44 | 1:05:49
the angle of defenders makes so much
difference. | 1:05:49 | 1:05:59
Half an hour gone. South Africa are
on the board. Wales 14, South Africa | 1:06:03 | 1:06:08
3. | 1:06:08 | 1:06:17 | |
Dan Dan Biggar is taking thims. Just
as he did last week. Biggar has | 1:06:31 | 1:06:39
split the forwards. | 1:06:39 | 1:06:41
Pollard. Didn't quite control the
ball as he went into in. A good | 1:06:43 | 1:06:54
drive by Dan du Preez. Cronje. Leigh
Halfpenny. A good tackle by Dillyn | 1:06:54 | 1:07:05
Leyds. He can't tackle him there.
The ball has gone loose. South | 1:07:05 | 1:07:13
Africa have it now. A chance, is
there? Coetzee. No chance. It shrugs | 1:07:13 | 1:07:24
off and gets the pass away. It is a
second for Hadleigh Parkes. | 1:07:24 | 1:07:32
Well, self inflicted wound there by
South Africa. It has been I would | 1:07:32 | 1:07:47
like to look at this again. He has
given it and it is too late unless | 1:07:47 | 1:07:53
he goes to the video ref. The
benefit of the doubt, we'll have | 1:07:53 | 1:07:58
that. Take the conversion quickly.
It is a great, great offload, but so | 1:07:58 | 1:08:05
much time. That's a great offload.
The fact is, that should never have | 1:08:05 | 1:08:11
been judged down. He had enough time
to clear. So much time. Too much | 1:08:11 | 1:08:15
time sometimes. He is looking at the
big screen. I don't think any of the | 1:08:15 | 1:08:29
South Africans have even questioned
it. It's fine. When you have so much | 1:08:29 | 1:08:37
time, he was looking to place the
ball. An easy two points for | 1:08:37 | 1:08:43
Halfpenny. That has really put them
under the cosh now, South Africa. | 1:08:43 | 1:08:48
Three tries to Wales. Three
converted tries. Well, it's tight. | 1:08:48 | 1:08:59
This is a fantastic pass out of the
tackle situation. | 1:08:59 | 1:09:07
He has played well this man, hasn't
he? Hadleigh Parkes. As he does club | 1:09:07 | 1:09:14
rugby, he just takes the right
option all the time. A good catch, | 1:09:14 | 1:09:19
Cory Hill again. Aled Davies
prepares to give Evans something to | 1:09:19 | 1:09:32
chase, the number eight, on
half-way. | 1:09:32 | 1:09:43
Pollard, but Aled Davies read it
well. Does he keep the ball on the | 1:09:45 | 1:09:49
field now or does he go for touch?
On the field. Wrong channel. | 1:09:49 | 1:10:04
Siya Kolisi. | 1:10:04 | 1:10:13
Halfpenny, will he jump this time?
He does and catches, but it's a good | 1:10:15 | 1:10:21
charge over him by South Africa.
Marx. | 1:10:21 | 1:10:28 | |
Dan Biggar, the tackler. | 1:10:28 | 1:10:33
Steven Kitshoff. Now this is where
South Africa tend to just press the | 1:10:41 | 1:10:48
accelerator down. | 1:10:48 | 1:10:54
The pass not all brute force then.
Kolisi. This is the other side. The | 1:11:01 | 1:11:17
South African second row. It has
gone forward. He tries to get the | 1:11:17 | 1:11:23
pass to Navidi. Dan Biggar says,
"Who is at home?" Dillyn Leyds. | 1:11:23 | 1:11:34
Scott Williams is beaten. Dillyn
Leyds has a chance to stretch his | 1:11:34 | 1:11:41
legs. Gets past Navidi. He finds
Jesse Kriel. It is a chase back. | 1:11:41 | 1:11:51
What speed by the winger. That was a
superb chase and he did well with | 1:11:51 | 1:12:00
the touchdown. That's a brilliant
try. I hear a lot about this kid, | 1:12:00 | 1:12:07
you know. I was talking to a South
African broadcaster. They can't | 1:12:07 | 1:12:12
believe he is not playing in that
position, but he just comes from | 1:12:12 | 1:12:17
nowhere. It is a lovely
counterattack. Lovely pass. He just | 1:12:17 | 1:12:23
tracks it on the inside and he says
kick, kick and here he comes and | 1:12:23 | 1:12:28
puts his foot on the accelerator and
unfortunately with Davies, no | 1:12:28 | 1:12:32
chance. That's a lovely, lovely try
by South Africa. And give credit for | 1:12:32 | 1:12:38
the kick as well, under pressure.
Just watch him. This guy has got to | 1:12:38 | 1:12:43
be happy, yes. Well, they have
looked very shaky in defence. | 1:12:43 | 1:12:55
They've had control of the set
piece, but they burst out of an | 1:12:55 | 1:13:02
unpromising start and turned a
quarter chance into a try. | 1:13:02 | 1:13:15
Handre Pollard to add the extra two.
The kick is good. South Africa is | 1:13:16 | 1:13:20
back in the game. For the sake of
the contest, very important that | 1:13:20 | 1:13:25
South Africa did something just
before half-time. To go in with a 20 | 1:13:25 | 1:13:32
point deficit would have been too
much. That will give them hope. We | 1:13:32 | 1:13:37
should pay tribute to the ambition
and confidence of the ladies who | 1:13:37 | 1:13:46
started that all off. Great running
by Dillyn Leyds. As we approach | 1:13:46 | 1:13:56
half-time, Wales through Dan Biggar.
Dillyn Leyds who started it and had | 1:13:56 | 1:14:03
a good old gallop himself. It has
come loose. Wales will have a chance | 1:14:03 | 1:14:12
now on the stroke of half-time.
Somebody has to go to scrum-half. | 1:14:12 | 1:14:17
Oh, Hadleigh Parkes. That's gone
loose. Went backwards. Rob Evans | 1:14:17 | 1:14:27
would play scrum-half, but he's
barged out of the way. Suddenly, | 1:14:27 | 1:14:31
they are picking up scraps. There is
an injury down. Yes. Away from that | 1:14:31 | 1:14:38
break down. It doesn't look good
either. Etzebeth is the player down. | 1:14:38 | 1:14:49
Meanwhile South Africa outside their
22 through Ross Cronje. Dan Biggar | 1:14:49 | 1:14:58
jumps. Leigh Halfpenny wants it and
tells Aled Davies he wants it now. | 1:14:58 | 1:15:07
An extra man on the ground as well.
Aled Davies says let's get in for | 1:15:07 | 1:15:12
half-time. This is Etzebeth down. 50
yards away from play. It doesn't | 1:15:12 | 1:15:19
look too good. | 1:15:19 | 1:15:29
The scoreboard probably rejects the
dominance that they have had. Just | 1:15:35 | 1:15:38
to warn you at the end if you
stepped off the gas, if you don't | 1:15:38 | 1:15:43
chase properly and if you don't
tackle, then South Africa have the | 1:15:43 | 1:15:46
where with all to did you damage.
Well, if there is a muscle injury to | 1:15:46 | 1:15:51
Etzebeth, it will be a massive one.
Wales 21, South Africa 10. | 1:15:51 | 1:16:00
Etzebeth, it will be a massive one.
Wales 21, South Africa 10. | 1:16:00 | 1:16:01
Well, we have ourselves a game and
if you decided not to go Christmas | 1:16:01 | 1:16:06
shopping and watch the game, you
have been rewarded with an | 1:16:06 | 1:16:10
enthralling 40 minutes and maybe the
try at the enhas given us an | 1:16:10 | 1:16:14
intriguing second half. I should say
that Hadleigh Parkes' second try for | 1:16:14 | 1:16:19
Wales, he is the first player to
score two tries for Wales on his | 1:16:19 | 1:16:25
debut since George North seven years
ago and Wales have never scored | 1:16:25 | 1:16:30
seven tries against South Africa
ever. There are the facts and | 1:16:30 | 1:16:34
figures of a match. 50/50 of the
tackles made. It has been a funny | 1:16:34 | 1:16:40
game? Wales have been dominant.
There much urgency and sop much more | 1:16:40 | 1:16:45
urgent than South Africa are in mind
particularly. There is more energy. | 1:16:45 | 1:16:49
South Africa are making so many
sloppy errors. Dan Biggar has been | 1:16:49 | 1:16:53
superb. He has controlled the game
for Whales. Totally dominant | 1:16:53 | 1:16:57
first-half for Wales. Gerry. South
Africa aren't deviating from their | 1:16:57 | 1:17:05
DNA, let's go forward and go route
one. Opportunities in counterattack | 1:17:05 | 1:17:10
not always taken and very strong in
the scrum. That's traditional. Very | 1:17:10 | 1:17:15
easy, kind of you, you know what
they are going to do and it is easy | 1:17:15 | 1:17:19
to defend. Wales have been clever
and quite smart and if they continue | 1:17:19 | 1:17:23
in that vain, it will be hard for
South Africa to come back. You have | 1:17:23 | 1:17:28
been getting animated Bobby,
alongside us here. Animated. I would | 1:17:28 | 1:17:31
say it is probably a reflection of
the disappointment with what they | 1:17:31 | 1:17:35
are trying to do. Coetzee is a big,
strong guy. He is being charged down | 1:17:35 | 1:17:41
twice and he could find contact in
the Kobe desert! He's strong and at | 1:17:41 | 1:17:47
the has got a great pass. He has a
great step. I haven't seen him | 1:17:47 | 1:17:50
moving five yards without looking
for someone to run into. For me, it | 1:17:50 | 1:17:54
is a bit embarrassing because these
are athletes and the way they're | 1:17:54 | 1:17:58
playing is exactly like Wales were
hoping they were going to play. When | 1:17:58 | 1:18:01
they did run one from deep, we
scored a try. | 1:18:01 | 1:18:06
Let's go through it
chroniclogically, Wales scored | 1:18:06 | 1:18:09
within five minutes and that set the
template for the rest of the half. | 1:18:09 | 1:18:15
They will have watched the videos.
He has just drifted wide, Amos. | 1:18:15 | 1:18:22
They will have watched the videos.
He has just drifted wide, Amos. | 1:18:22 | 1:18:25
Looks easy, but this kick needs to
be perfect. | 1:18:25 | 1:18:31
The inside guys, the urgency. That's
all done in the videos. For a team | 1:18:34 | 1:18:40
struggling to score tries, when a
move like this comes off that you | 1:18:40 | 1:18:49
have practised and he rehearsed,
gives you confidence. He looked for | 1:18:49 | 1:18:55
support and it was there for Wales.
Scott Williams backing up his superb | 1:18:55 | 1:19:00
try last week and he got another one
this week. You would question the | 1:19:00 | 1:19:04
South African line in the backs
there, wouldn't you? We had an | 1:19:04 | 1:19:08
interesting set-up. They didn't run
the ball when they had an advantage | 1:19:08 | 1:19:13
about two minutes before that and
then they lost their own scrum. They | 1:19:13 | 1:19:19
got him with a clearly put together
strategy. A lovely piece of skill | 1:19:19 | 1:19:24
from Wales and credit to them. If
you are the skipper or the back line | 1:19:24 | 1:19:29
coach, get the youngster who really
wants to play the ball. He is | 1:19:29 | 1:19:34
probably thinking 65,000 people,
what should I do next? They have | 1:19:34 | 1:19:38
outfoxed him which doesn't seem hard
at the moment unfortunately. | 1:19:38 | 1:19:43
outfoxed him which doesn't seem hard
at the moment unfortunately. | 1:19:43 | 1:19:44
Hadleigh Parkes' debut, his first
tryment he wanted that ball and | 1:19:44 | 1:19:48
maybe one or two of the Springbok
defenders weren't sure about that. | 1:19:48 | 1:19:52
There is a shimmy. A glimmer of a
dummy run by Davies. He thinks the | 1:19:52 | 1:19:59
cross kick is coming in. There is no
one flanking him behind doing the | 1:19:59 | 1:20:03
sweeper role. Too many stand still
and watch Hadleigh Parkes pick the | 1:20:03 | 1:20:10
ball up. He wanted it more than the
four or five South Africans. As soon | 1:20:10 | 1:20:16
as that ball hit the floor, it was a
great pick up. He is not the | 1:20:16 | 1:20:20
quickest and he still gets there. It
is fantastic composure. If you are a | 1:20:20 | 1:20:26
South African, you are disappointed
with that. If you are the team | 1:20:26 | 1:20:29
captain and you have captained the
Springboks and that try has been | 1:20:29 | 1:20:35
conceded, what do you say when you
are behind the posts and you are | 1:20:35 | 1:20:38
14-0 after ten minutes? It's a
family show! | 1:20:38 | 1:20:44
The one thing you have to say, all
credit to them. They have outfoxed | 1:20:44 | 1:20:49
us, guys. Is the guy next to you
doing a smart thing? Is the guy next | 1:20:49 | 1:20:53
to him doing a smart thing? What I
haven't seen, I have seen a lot of | 1:20:53 | 1:20:58
right, let's smash it a bit harder
now. Let's do the same thing and | 1:20:58 | 1:21:02
expect a different result. That's
the definition of insanity. I really | 1:21:02 | 1:21:06
liked it when they spread the ball
twice and you can see guys trying | 1:21:06 | 1:21:12
and Marx has been amazing. Those
guys will be saying, "What can I | 1:21:12 | 1:21:16
do?" That's the difficult situation
they are in. I know you think one or | 1:21:16 | 1:21:20
two decision have gone Wales' way.
What about the third try, Parkes' | 1:21:20 | 1:21:25
second? Do you think they should
have been ruled out for offside? | 1:21:25 | 1:21:29
Well, it is marginal. It is Dan
Biggar again. He is in front. He is | 1:21:29 | 1:21:35
in front there. Having seen that
angle. Marginalish. It is great | 1:21:35 | 1:21:42
finish and great vision from
Faletau. South Africa, what is | 1:21:42 | 1:21:54
Kolisi doing here? We don't go on to
the officials unnecessarily, but | 1:21:54 | 1:22:00
apparently that was not clear and
obvious, but there is four people | 1:22:00 | 1:22:04
that can see that was clear and
obvious and offside. It is a shame | 1:22:04 | 1:22:08
that we have had to come to that.
Wales deserve the 11 point lead | 1:22:08 | 1:22:12
here. I think Marx' try for me,
was... Well, we are coming on to | 1:22:12 | 1:22:18
that in a second. It is an 11 point
margin because the Springboks scored | 1:22:18 | 1:22:23
towards the end of that half. That
was the first time in the whole | 1:22:23 | 1:22:26
match that they have gone wide and
they have shown a bit of invention. | 1:22:26 | 1:22:30
Dillyn Leyds is a young player who
had a tremendous domestic season in | 1:22:30 | 1:22:34
South Africa. He has come through
different things. This is the kind | 1:22:34 | 1:22:37
of thing he does week and week out
for Western Province. That's what I | 1:22:37 | 1:22:42
have been waiting for. The kick,
every ball from the back, the one | 1:22:42 | 1:22:46
they haven't, they have split the
entire Welsh team in half. Now you | 1:22:46 | 1:22:50
have got Kriel and didn't we say
before the match, watch out for the | 1:22:50 | 1:23:05
pace of him, he is an amazing
athlete. That should say to the | 1:23:05 | 1:23:10
South African team, let's get it to
the guys who can really do damage | 1:23:10 | 1:23:14
with the ball. You feel for Aled
Davies. You know you are not going | 1:23:14 | 1:23:19
to win the race and you are in
quicksand and you have got a guy at | 1:23:19 | 1:23:23
that pace. It was a fantastic pace.
This is one of those difficult | 1:23:23 | 1:23:28
situations you get when you rely on
technology now to make the decision | 1:23:28 | 1:23:31
for you, when if you like your rugby
instinct says, "99.9% certain, this | 1:23:31 | 1:23:37
is a try." Before TMOs the referee
would have given that try. This one | 1:23:37 | 1:23:49
for me, Malcolm Marx has five men on
his back. How powerful was that? The | 1:23:49 | 1:23:57
one thing I will say week in and
week out, we judge players on what | 1:23:57 | 1:24:02
happened on the field, but you have
got a TMO with 30 cameras and an | 1:24:02 | 1:24:06
opportunity to make a difference and
neither of those mistakes has he | 1:24:06 | 1:24:10
managed to rectify. This potentially
could be career threatening result | 1:24:10 | 1:24:14
for Allister Coetzee so you have got
to look at the gravity of how they | 1:24:14 | 1:24:19
affect the games. In this situation
I wouldn't have changed either | 1:24:19 | 1:24:23
because I didn't see Faletau until
Gerry mentioned it and Marx, I | 1:24:23 | 1:24:26
thought was a try. It is a 14 point
swing, but one thing you can impact | 1:24:26 | 1:24:33
and is impacting on Coetzee tenancy
as a coach is some fundamental | 1:24:33 | 1:24:40
errors that the Springboks are
making in key air yos of the pitch. | 1:24:40 | 1:24:46
errors that the Springboks are
making in key air yos of the pitch. | 1:24:46 | 1:24:49
That's a terrible kick from Pollard.
Marx scores a try and there is no | 1:24:49 | 1:24:53
doubt they would have pushed over.
That's really sloppy. It is the | 1:24:53 | 1:24:59
world's biggest inside out
combination. Losing the ball and | 1:24:59 | 1:25:02
Pollard doesn't kick this out. Now,
these are basics. When you say to | 1:25:02 | 1:25:06
kids tackle low, you also say kick
it out like the fly-half do. This is | 1:25:06 | 1:25:13
so uncharacteristic for a the
line-out. Credit Wales because they | 1:25:13 | 1:25:18
have had more urgency, but the South
Africans, whether they are thinking | 1:25:18 | 1:25:21
of the beach, I'm not sure, but they
are way off the pace. If there is | 1:25:21 | 1:25:26
one area of the game you worry, it
would be the scrum because the South | 1:25:26 | 1:25:31
Africans are dominant there? Yes,
they have been more dominant. The | 1:25:31 | 1:25:35
two instances you wanted more from
them was close to the line, but this | 1:25:35 | 1:25:39
young front row, they are good. I
really like what they bring to the | 1:25:39 | 1:25:47
party and Marx has been the stand
out South African player. The front | 1:25:47 | 1:25:52
row are dominating. They have won a
couple of scrums. You have got to | 1:25:52 | 1:25:56
turn that into more advantage. We
are not hanging out the officials to | 1:25:56 | 1:26:01
dry here. We are picking key
incidents. We saw the Scotland v | 1:26:01 | 1:26:08
Australia game last week being
impacted by a sending off in the | 1:26:08 | 1:26:13
first-half for somebody going into a
ruck illegally. What do we make of | 1:26:13 | 1:26:19
Rob Evans going into this ruck here?
I know you have got a strong | 1:26:19 | 1:26:22
opinion. I don't mind about the
penalty. I have seen young kids, 16, | 1:26:22 | 1:26:27
18-year-old kids and I watch from
the side. OK, that's a guy's neck | 1:26:27 | 1:26:32
and back on the ground. That
potentially is a back breaking | 1:26:32 | 1:26:38
injury because you are not allowed
to go in with your shoulder. Penalty | 1:26:38 | 1:26:42
or not, I don't mind, but that's
nots what rugby is about. | 1:26:42 | 1:26:55
You could a fussy TMO who decides
that's worth looking at. It could be | 1:26:58 | 1:27:03
one card or another. What is really
annoying is that players do it. | 1:27:03 | 1:27:12
Don't worry about the penalty.
That's been missed. The high tackle | 1:27:12 | 1:27:16
are easier to see because they're in
open play. Is this game done yet? | 1:27:16 | 1:27:21
No, it's not done. South Africa
can't be that bad again and Wales | 1:27:21 | 1:27:26
need to keep the intensity of the
game up. It's not done by stretch of | 1:27:26 | 1:27:35
the imagination. | 1:27:35 | 1:27:35
game up. It's not done by stretch of
the imagination. I think Etzebeth | 1:27:35 | 1:27:38
was limping off. We haven't got a
result yet. If he's off, it's going | 1:27:38 | 1:27:42
to be a big, hard, difficult hill
for South Africa to climb because he | 1:27:42 | 1:27:45
has been carrying almost every time
they've got the ball. Well, there is | 1:27:45 | 1:27:49
no rugby representative in the final
12 for Sports Personality of the | 1:27:49 | 1:27:53
Year, but it will be a difficult
choice to make. | 1:27:53 | 1:27:59
After the races are won and medals
gained, the records broken and | 1:27:59 | 1:28:03
punches thrown. After the hard
yards, hard minutes and hard games | 1:28:03 | 1:28:08
are done, the Giants conquer and the
trophies etched forever. After the | 1:28:08 | 1:28:13
legends have taken their bow, and
new ones have emerged, there is only | 1:28:13 | 1:28:17
one left to decide. BBC Sports
Personality of the Year 2017. It is | 1:28:17 | 1:28:24
live from Liverpool, Sunday, 17th
December, on BBC One. | 1:28:24 | 1:28:28
Before that, we have one more game
of rugby to show you live on BBC | 1:28:28 | 1:28:33
Television and that's the women's
match. It's on the Red Button at | 1:28:33 | 1:28:38
11.30am on Thursday. We are live for
the men's game at 2.45 on Thursday | 1:28:38 | 1:28:44
afternoon. The first weekend in
February, we start with Wales v | 1:28:44 | 1:28:59
Scotland and France viraled. A
couple of other things to mention as | 1:28:59 | 1:29:01
well. The highlights of the rugby
league World Cup final, I won't tell | 1:29:01 | 1:29:04
you what happened. I know all sorts
of trouble if I tell you, you can | 1:29:04 | 1:29:09
watch the Human Rights at 6pm on BBC
Two. Match Of The Day tonight, | 1:29:09 | 1:29:13
10.20pm on BBC One. I'm just hearing
that Etzebeth is not coming back on | 1:29:13 | 1:29:20
to the field because of that injury.
That might be a really key factor in | 1:29:20 | 1:29:24
determining the outcome of this.
Well, I think, I | 1:29:24 | 1:29:38
was going to say, there might abgood
replacement. Wales will probably | 1:29:43 | 1:29:53
take a leave out of Ireland's book.
The accuracy from Biggar has been | 1:29:53 | 1:29:58
superb. More of the same? Move on
from Georgia and what we have seen | 1:29:58 | 1:30:05
would intensity, that's what the
conversation should have been from | 1:30:05 | 1:30:08
the coaches to the Welsh side. Up
the intensity. South Africa make all | 1:30:08 | 1:30:16
the mistakes so they do your
first-half for you. Just 40 minutes | 1:30:16 | 1:30:19
left for this series of Autumn
International matches and Eddie | 1:30:19 | 1:30:25
Butler. | 1:30:25 | 1:30:28
COMMENTATOR: Off we go, as Jerome
Garces says to start the second half | 1:30:28 | 1:30:32
with his whistle. Pollard with his
boot. | 1:30:32 | 1:30:36 | |
Coetzee has a little luck and runs
into Cory Hill committee does make a | 1:30:44 | 1:30:47
lot of tackles. -- a little look and
runs into Cory Hill, who does make a | 1:30:47 | 1:30:59
lot of tackles. Rob Evans, missing a
tackle there. But making that one. | 1:30:59 | 1:31:10
Pollard, tackled by Faletau. | 1:31:10 | 1:31:15
Good passing. The final pass to
Gelant goes astray. This is a better | 1:31:17 | 1:31:27
start to the second half by South
Africa than the first! A very good | 1:31:27 | 1:31:33
start, Malcolm Marx does the first
initial break. A lovely double pump, | 1:31:33 | 1:31:38
a late pass. Passing to the winner.
That was poor. Difficult to take. | 1:31:38 | 1:31:46
Trying to elevate Pelissie to the
captaincy, but he has got it now. -- | 1:31:46 | 1:31:51
elevate | 1:31:51 | 1:31:51
Kolisi. | 1:31:59 | 1:32:02
Wilco Louw with the head and leg
bandages. A bandaged tight head. | 1:32:12 | 1:32:24
Now then, the first scrum of the
second half, Wales will not want to | 1:32:40 | 1:32:44
linger. And they get it away
quickly. Hadleigh Parkes takes it | 1:32:44 | 1:32:49
over the 22. Davies with time to
plan his kick. That cannot go | 1:32:49 | 1:32:56
straight out. Outside of the 22. He
goes back, a South African ball. The | 1:32:56 | 1:33:07
forwards will not be happy. Having
been scrummaged, they stand to get | 1:33:07 | 1:33:13
the ball back, having seen that type
of mistake made, it is a poor kick, | 1:33:13 | 1:33:18
isn't it? They set it up and
everything. The direction was very | 1:33:18 | 1:33:23
poor. Kitshoff comes that way.
The man who threw it to him was | 1:33:23 | 1:33:33
short. | 1:33:33 | 1:33:43
Josh Navidi with the tackle here.
Cranky... Oupa Mohoje. A change of | 1:33:46 | 1:33:54
direction. Jesse Kriel, through the
gap, he cannot get that pass away. | 1:33:54 | 1:34:08
Drew | 1:34:08 | 1:34:10 | |
short, but there is still a chance
for cranky. Do they need that | 1:34:14 | 1:34:21
penalty advantage? Dillyn Leyds, he
set up the first try. South Africa, | 1:34:21 | 1:34:27
inches short.
WHISTLE | 1:34:27 | 1:34:33
No advantage, we go back to the
penalty. It has been a much more | 1:34:33 | 1:34:37
impressive start by the Springboks.
They wanted intensity from the | 1:34:37 | 1:34:44
Welsh, and they have come out with a
greater intensity. They say the high | 1:34:44 | 1:34:54
tackle, but you never know these
days. The decision to go to the | 1:34:54 | 1:35:01
corner. I think they will try and
shove it over the line. It must be | 1:35:01 | 1:35:10
in Warren Gatland's mind that they
are the dominant pack. If you've | 1:35:10 | 1:35:13
seen anything in super his
performance today, by no surprise, | 1:35:13 | 1:35:19
he is a fantastic player. Slightly
untidy... It was straight. Siya | 1:35:19 | 1:35:29
Kolisi coming away with it. They get
down. | 1:35:29 | 1:35:36 | |
Dan Biggar comes up fast, kicking
off. | 1:35:36 | 1:35:40 | |
Wilco Louw, Cozzi kicking off again.
Good strength from Kitshoff. Out it | 1:35:49 | 1:35:56
comes... Pollard! South Africa get
their reward for an impressive start | 1:35:56 | 1:36:06
to the second half. Not subtle but
it is all effective, due to the | 1:36:06 | 1:36:11
intensity which has been ratcheted
up since they came back out. You | 1:36:11 | 1:36:17
cannot say that they do not deserve
that, they need to start hitting. | 1:36:17 | 1:36:24
They had so many numbers on the
right-hand side, Aled Davies tries | 1:36:24 | 1:36:28
to go out and close them down but
you have to afford it to them, they | 1:36:28 | 1:36:32
had to do something. They had
absolutely no chance. Good pressure | 1:36:32 | 1:36:36
but it all came from the loose cake
of Aled Davies, setting up the | 1:36:36 | 1:36:40
position, then the penalty. An easy
finish. South Africa are back in | 1:36:40 | 1:36:46
this game now. | 1:36:46 | 1:36:49
It is such a contrast. The way that
South Africa started this game and | 1:36:53 | 1:36:57
how they are playing now at the
start of the second half... Pollard. | 1:36:57 | 1:37:04
A penalty conversion try to his
name. And it stays as one conversion | 1:37:04 | 1:37:12
to his name. Small things, like a
change in momentum in games, Wales | 1:37:12 | 1:37:19
just conceded a score, then they
were going to be successful, then | 1:37:19 | 1:37:25
kicking straight out, reversing the
momentum and immediately putting | 1:37:25 | 1:37:28
South Africa back on the foot
instead of being out and playing | 1:37:28 | 1:37:32
them from the halfway line. I am not
surprised that Wales make changes. | 1:37:32 | 1:37:38
In the front row. This is Rhys
Patchell coming on behind the scrum. | 1:37:38 | 1:37:46
Aled Davies's partner at the
Scarlets. Wyn Jones comes on into | 1:37:46 | 1:37:51
the front row. Wyn Jones is on for
Rob Evans. Rhys Patchell for Dan | 1:37:51 | 1:37:56
Biggar. It's an interesting
substitution of Dan Biggar Bowe. He | 1:37:56 | 1:38:04
has played exceptionally well in the
first half. Scoring after seven | 1:38:04 | 1:38:07
minutes. It is interesting to see
whether it is tactical or an injury. | 1:38:07 | 1:38:14
Sonia will be able to chase that up.
An interesting change. The line-out | 1:38:14 | 1:38:18
working well for Wales... Scott
Williams will want to present | 1:38:18 | 1:38:22
quickly and he does. | 1:38:22 | 1:38:24
A good counter ruck from Oupa
Mohoje, delaying that release for | 1:38:29 | 1:38:35
Wales. The | 1:38:35 | 1:38:37
Oupa Mohoje involved again. The new
player, Wyn Jones, the prop. The | 1:38:41 | 1:38:55
ball is here. Use the ball. It looks
like Dan Biggar went off with an | 1:38:55 | 1:38:59
injury. Rhys Patchell, using the
aerial route. Amos in pursuit... A | 1:38:59 | 1:39:06
great catch. Hallam Amos, cannot
quite get that pass away this time. | 1:39:06 | 1:39:10
Help is there. | 1:39:10 | 1:39:12
It is still on for Wales, Faletau
with a chip through. Francois | 1:39:18 | 1:39:23
Venter. Navidi with a follow-up
tackle. Pieter-Steph du Toit, | 1:39:23 | 1:39:34
hesitating. | 1:39:34 | 1:39:37
The crowd stirs... What a catch by
Hallam Amos. And a great kick. The | 1:39:45 | 1:39:52
cross kick is a little wider this
time. Good competition and a great | 1:39:52 | 1:39:56
take. Dan Biggar going. But Rhys
Patchell is a running threat. Alun | 1:39:56 | 1:40:07
Wyn Jones, down to Navidi. Intricate
by Wales in midfield. And Faletau. | 1:40:07 | 1:40:16
Navidi. Making room against those
big defenders. Hadleigh Parkes, a | 1:40:16 | 1:40:27
little dig through. Rhys Patchell is
in pursuit, and a beautiful pass! | 1:40:27 | 1:40:30
Evans couldn't quite get it.
Advantage to South Africa. One of | 1:40:30 | 1:40:38
the tries of the season. Advantage,
over. I thought again that it was a | 1:40:38 | 1:40:49
kick and I thought there was a shout
of offside? No, it was a South | 1:40:49 | 1:40:54
African. And it's clearly offside.
Clearly offside. Not one of the | 1:40:54 | 1:40:59
tries of the season, then? The
offside of the season! Offside, | 1:40:59 | 1:41:03
dropped pass. He is a threat, isn't
he? Going inside of Patchell. Aaron | 1:41:03 | 1:41:10
Shingler at the line-out. Parkes to
Patchell. Scott Williams on the | 1:41:10 | 1:41:15
outside turn. | 1:41:15 | 1:41:18
Rhys Patchell has come on and he
seems to be in the groove. This is | 1:41:38 | 1:41:41
the danger, where South Africa hit
you. He is a nuisance, isn't he? | 1:41:41 | 1:41:51
Marx. Aaron Shingler, gets the
pass-through to Andrews. | 1:41:51 | 1:41:58
Wyn Jones, no change here for Wales.
But what about out here? Hallam | 1:42:04 | 1:42:13
Amos, gets the pass back to Parkes. | 1:42:13 | 1:42:24
Patchell, but Gelant has read it.
Wales just asked the referee to | 1:42:30 | 1:42:40
check whether the wing was outside
of his 22, he wasn't. It was a very | 1:42:40 | 1:42:45
good parents. It was, but it was
brought about by the fact that | 1:42:45 | 1:42:49
Patchell felt he had no option
because Wales hadn't gone forward, | 1:42:49 | 1:42:52
they went sideways. Not getting over
the gain line. He dropped back, read | 1:42:52 | 1:42:57
the play well, Gelant. From the
line-out, Josh Navidi. Aled Davies | 1:42:57 | 1:43:13
wants to keep this on the field.
Does it go far enough? A knock-on | 1:43:13 | 1:43:18
advantage. The aerial came in
general has worked well for Wales. | 1:43:18 | 1:43:26
On that occasion, you knew that
South Africa would be catching. Not | 1:43:26 | 1:43:31
there first. It isn't about you, it
is about the tackle. If I allow the | 1:43:31 | 1:43:36
tackler in this position, I cannot
say to you to play on, you know what | 1:43:36 | 1:43:41
I mean? I understand. So, it is a
50-50 call. You release. It's a | 1:43:41 | 1:43:52
brilliant game. He is a presence, on
the field. He is a nuisance when you | 1:43:52 | 1:43:59
play against him. He is always
slowing things down, he is a good | 1:43:59 | 1:44:04
ball carrier. Very much in the mode
of... Yourself? Bismarck! The | 1:44:04 | 1:44:15
outrage of the Welsh captain! He is
far too measured... I just think he | 1:44:15 | 1:44:26
wouldn't have taken that quietly!
No! Time to refocus, and South | 1:44:26 | 1:44:37
Africa, after a shaky start, have
certainly a big game. Periods in the | 1:44:37 | 1:44:42
first half where they were good.
Now, they think that they can dig, | 1:44:42 | 1:44:49
they've got some belief back. They
can finish this tour with a good | 1:44:49 | 1:44:54
result.
The scrummage goes around and around | 1:44:54 | 1:44:55
and with South Africa, a penalty.
Jordan is not happy with this. I | 1:44:55 | 1:45:01
understand. Jerome Garcia, it's well
shifted. Not automatically if there | 1:45:01 | 1:45:09
is a pushback should there be a
penalty. Provided everybody stays | 1:45:09 | 1:45:14
down and bound. Now we mention it,
there is the penalty from the scrum. | 1:45:14 | 1:45:20
They end up in the 22 once again
with a catch and drive, which could | 1:45:20 | 1:45:24
lead to another scrum. Leading to
more intense pressure. | 1:45:24 | 1:45:29
Looking at the attack here...
Slightly inside. That's all we need. | 1:45:29 | 1:45:34
Putting pressure on the left-hand
side of the Welsh 's crumb. It is | 1:45:34 | 1:45:37
now skewed. | 1:45:37 | 1:45:43
-- Welsh scrum. Malcolm Marx with
the throat... -- with the throw, the | 1:45:47 | 1:45:58
danger man in possession and the
maul heading towards the touchline. | 1:45:58 | 1:46:08
France while Venter, a brilliant
tackle by Josh Navidi. Alun Wyn | 1:46:08 | 1:46:13
Jones cannot touch him now... Steven
Kitshoff... No numbers on the | 1:46:13 | 1:46:17
right-hand sides of that figure. So
they go back to the tight side | 1:46:17 | 1:46:22
through Pollard. They have numbers
now. A good pass... Jesse Kriel... | 1:46:22 | 1:46:29
And it looks like a try. It is! The
whistle goes... Again, it's very | 1:46:29 | 1:46:36
simple and direct. And again, very
effective. First, second and third. | 1:46:36 | 1:46:48
You cannot say anything that South
Africa deserve this, the manner in | 1:46:48 | 1:46:52
which they have changed their
application. It was a short side | 1:46:52 | 1:46:57
defence. Too narrow and creating an
overlap. One and running straight | 1:46:57 | 1:47:03
through, Leigh Halfpenny was very
clever. No one on the right-hand | 1:47:03 | 1:47:06
side. Going left, there he is again.
Runs at the inside, that's the right | 1:47:06 | 1:47:13
way to do it. Make sure he makes the
most of the space outside. He does | 1:47:13 | 1:47:17
not allow the would-be defender to
drift onto the next man. | 1:47:17 | 1:47:22
Wales scored the first three tries
of this game. South Africa have | 1:47:32 | 1:47:38
responded with three of their own
and this, Handre Pollard, is to take | 1:47:38 | 1:47:43
the lead for the first time. Looking
good... And it is! South Africa are | 1:47:43 | 1:47:49
in the lead. Wales do not get stuck
in, and they will find themselves | 1:47:49 | 1:47:59
further out. They need to beat them
physically. That is an elbow to the | 1:47:59 | 1:48:03
head, there. Mohoje. They just got
their numbers wrong on the | 1:48:03 | 1:48:09
right-hand side, as they defend.
Patchell restarting. Amos again... | 1:48:09 | 1:48:16
Following up successfully. Coming
back on the South African side. | 1:48:16 | 1:48:21
Little scraps are going the way of | 1:48:21 | 1:48:22
Springboks. Rhys Webb is on for Alan
Davies. -- Aled Davies. Wales have | 1:48:28 | 1:48:36
been rocked, they now trail. | 1:48:36 | 1:48:38
The ball is stolen by Francois
Venter. How this game has changed! | 1:48:51 | 1:48:57
Is that too long? It is, by the
scrum-half Ross Cronje. A lot of | 1:48:57 | 1:49:03
turnover, and a lot of space. Did
not need to take that amount of | 1:49:03 | 1:49:07
risk. With a turnover... A penalty
advantage was being played. And it | 1:49:07 | 1:49:15
is back here. Those forwards would
be relieved! You are right, the | 1:49:15 | 1:49:21
momentum has certainly swung in
South Africa's favour. When they | 1:49:21 | 1:49:25
have had possession, they've made
the most of it and come away with | 1:49:25 | 1:49:28
points. It's very difficult, when
you are in this position, you know | 1:49:28 | 1:49:32
what is happening but to get
yourself back into the game, you | 1:49:32 | 1:49:36
need the ball. You basically need
defenders to run out rather than be | 1:49:36 | 1:49:40
a defender and have a tackle
yourself. They need to start | 1:49:40 | 1:49:46
driving, then there will be trouble.
Defending so tightly on the | 1:49:46 | 1:49:51
right-hand side, a three on one...
And a very good finish by Jesse | 1:49:51 | 1:49:55
Kriel. Defending so tight,
especially when South Africa have no | 1:49:55 | 1:49:59
numbers on the right-hand side. You
are right, it's going to be a tough | 1:49:59 | 1:50:04
one to get back. Mohoje wins, and
Marx in possession. The drive | 1:50:04 | 1:50:14
inevitably comes on. Wyn Jones has
to extricate himself. Have Wales | 1:50:14 | 1:50:24
turned this over? They have, at
least at the scrum. Great work by | 1:50:24 | 1:50:30
Wales to do that. Properly set up.
Plaudits must go to Aaron Shingler. | 1:50:30 | 1:50:48
Or, possibly Faletau? Rhys Webb,
talking to his half-back partner, | 1:50:48 | 1:50:53
Rhys Patchell. He might have a word
with the forwards as well? The | 1:50:53 | 1:51:00
scrummage will be under pressure.
That's a problem you turn the ball | 1:51:00 | 1:51:04
over but now from where you've got
that, you could be facing a penalty | 1:51:04 | 1:51:08
if you don't. If you don't scrummage
well, or keep it straight, get the | 1:51:08 | 1:51:13
ball in and out quickly. That's how
you strike. | 1:51:13 | 1:51:25
Lood de Jager is ready. Having a
little breather. | 1:51:26 | 1:51:37
That is nine penalties to zero. It
says it all. The dominance after | 1:51:39 | 1:51:44
that figure at the set piece. Rhys
Webb feeds... Cannot get the ball. | 1:51:44 | 1:51:52
It's a penalty. South Africa with a
little push and pull turn. That is a | 1:51:52 | 1:51:58
huge relief for Wales. They have a
throw in, they can build pressure. | 1:51:58 | 1:52:06
And between them, the number eight,
Faletau is allowed to reach in now. | 1:52:06 | 1:52:14
Reach in and take the ball away.
Make a bridge for the scrum-half for | 1:52:14 | 1:52:20
Rhys Webb. Much better. Pick it up
and drive. You could see that | 1:52:20 | 1:52:28
Kitshoff was running around there.
Wales need to get their second-half | 1:52:28 | 1:52:32
going. Faletau does well. Rhys
Webb... It goes wrong. A knock-on by | 1:52:32 | 1:52:44
Cory Hill. South Africa are back in
position. To trot, the advantage | 1:52:44 | 1:52:54
played to South Africa. -- Trott. | 1:52:54 | 1:52:59
It's a good tackle, Hadleigh Parkes, | 1:53:04 | 1:53:09
Dan du Preez again. This is a very
different South African side. Very | 1:53:14 | 1:53:19
reminiscent of their first-half
performance. Still, an advantage | 1:53:19 | 1:53:23
being played. Recovering well there. | 1:53:23 | 1:53:34
That is probably a little too far.
Halfpenny with plenty of time to | 1:53:34 | 1:53:38
size things up. Francois Venter,
Steff Evans. Wales will want to | 1:53:38 | 1:53:46
break the game up. Scott Andrews.
Jones to Josh Navidi. Patchell a | 1:53:46 | 1:54:00
knock-on advantage. Or is it
deliberate play? Aaron Shingler | 1:54:00 | 1:54:06
sets. A good pass, Shingler... And
Hadleigh Parkes. Still playing | 1:54:06 | 1:54:14
advantage. Steff Evans... The other
advantage is being played. Steff | 1:54:14 | 1:54:19
Evans, and South Africa had reformed
their green wall. Leigh Halfpenny, | 1:54:19 | 1:54:26
Hadleigh Parkes... Advantage as
Wales storm on through Webb. Elliot | 1:54:26 | 1:54:37
Dee is on for Wales at hooker, a
very long advantage being played | 1:54:37 | 1:54:44
wide! It is a priority for Wales. Do
they keep the pressure going? It is | 1:54:44 | 1:54:50
within Leigh Halfpenny's range. It
is a tough kick for Leigh Halfpenny. | 1:54:50 | 1:54:55
The halfway line, 50 metres in. A
tough kick. They haven't had | 1:54:55 | 1:54:59
possession for a while. If he thinks
he can nail it, you give it to him. | 1:54:59 | 1:55:08
We are into the final quarter, that
is the first passage of play that | 1:55:08 | 1:55:12
Wales have had in the second half...
That is a brilliant kick by | 1:55:12 | 1:55:17
Patchell. A very good kick. A new
hooker for Wales, Elliot Dee of the | 1:55:17 | 1:55:27
Dragons. The communication and
execution was spot on. It was a good | 1:55:27 | 1:55:37
start. Faletau with the catch, and
Dee goes in. No change out of the | 1:55:37 | 1:55:43
drive yet. A few centimetres
forward... Rhys Webb says there | 1:55:43 | 1:55:52
might be something here, where they
can pick up momentum. Certainly is, | 1:55:52 | 1:56:01
Wales do have momentum but now they
have to be careful. That's the | 1:56:01 | 1:56:07
danger. You've got to make your
call. A good drive, going forward | 1:56:07 | 1:56:12
but you've got to be controlling and
assess where your opposition is. | 1:56:12 | 1:56:17
Once you drop it, it is held up.
They have a strong scrum. This | 1:56:17 | 1:56:26
should be easy for South Africa now.
I got smoked with a shoulder charge, | 1:56:26 | 1:56:31
no arms. Alun Wyn Jones, claiming he
was taken out in the build-up for | 1:56:31 | 1:56:40
the tribe. He was out of that right
hands defensive situation, and it | 1:56:40 | 1:56:45
will be interesting to have a look.
He was smashed in the face by Kolisi | 1:56:45 | 1:56:50
at the start of the second half, and
nobody noticed. You were saying in | 1:56:50 | 1:56:57
the studio about a smash of the
shoulder into the head. Kolisi was | 1:56:57 | 1:57:04
the culprit on that occasion.
REFEREE: Shift and turn... There is | 1:57:04 | 1:57:11
the try. This will be interesting to
see, this is the Jesse Kriel try, | 1:57:11 | 1:57:19
somewhere before that, Alun Wyn
Jones is taken out. You know what? I | 1:57:19 | 1:57:27
don't think there is anything in
that, particularly. It is so hard to | 1:57:27 | 1:57:35
spot, live, isn't it? If that was a
slow motion... You would go, well... | 1:57:35 | 1:57:41
If it looks like that in slow
motion, which makes it look a lot | 1:57:41 | 1:57:44
worse, I do not think it was
anything. Low scrimmage. Wales in | 1:57:44 | 1:57:53
the right position, they've got a
bit of momentum. Out Dan Biggar, | 1:57:53 | 1:57:57
injured and not going back. --
outcomes Dan Biggar. | 1:57:57 | 1:58:03
The South African scrum has been in
movable all afternoon. And it is | 1:58:16 | 1:58:21
again... Nine, nine! | 1:58:21 | 1:58:30
Well worked, it still leaves Wales
with the throw in an South African | 1:58:39 | 1:58:43
territory. | 1:58:43 | 1:58:53
Aaron Shingler at the front is the
target. Webb with a dummy, nearly | 1:58:56 | 1:59:00
opened up for him but again, the
South African defenders have closed | 1:59:00 | 1:59:05
in on him. Cory Hill, Scott Andrews.
Picking up. Faletau to Shingler, and | 1:59:05 | 1:59:18
float will help Wales... Shingler to
Faletau. The position in the centre | 1:59:18 | 1:59:23
of the field. Hadleigh Parkes,
throwing back. | 1:59:23 | 1:59:32
Josh Navidi, Kelly C cannot make the
tackle. Up to the 22... WHISTLE | 1:59:39 | 1:59:46
It is a penalty to Wales, in front
of the posts. REFEREE: You are fine. | 1:59:46 | 1:59:59
Seven, you are in. He worked hard
for that penalty. They just get | 1:59:59 | 2:00:09
their noses in front... A good run
by Navidi, and powerful. I think he | 2:00:09 | 2:00:17
is in again, Marsh. Steph du Toit
not running away there. You've got | 2:00:17 | 2:00:24
to make an effort there. In front of
the sticks. | 2:00:24 | 2:00:32
The first one very clear, not just | 2:00:32 | 2:00:34
The first one very clear, not just
like this. He killed the tempo. This | 2:00:34 | 2:00:40
is very important, not just that
they could take the lead but it | 2:00:40 | 2:00:43
gives Wales reward for their efforts
of the last five minutes which | 2:00:43 | 2:00:50
should psychologically stabilise
them. They have been under severe | 2:00:50 | 2:00:52
pressure for most of this half. | 2:00:52 | 2:00:56
This for the lead. Wales in the
lead. 24-22. I feel there is more to | 2:01:02 | 2:01:14
come in this game. Yes, I think
there is plenty of time left. He | 2:01:14 | 2:01:22
loves a drop goal, doesn't he? | 2:01:22 | 2:01:25
More changes for South Africa,
Trevor Nyakane comes on into the | 2:01:30 | 2:01:34
front row. Quite a big call when you
have been dominant. Steff Evans. | 2:01:34 | 2:01:44
Can't get away from Pieter-Steph du
Toit. Good chase, that is. | 2:01:44 | 2:01:50
Wales have to be careful with their
kick-off reception and exit. | 2:01:54 | 2:01:59
Patchell goes for... Good kick.
Distance downfield, Andries Coetzee | 2:01:59 | 2:02:08
under orders to put it up in the
air, disobeys and tries to run. And | 2:02:08 | 2:02:14
presents Pollard... Well picked up,
Francois Venter. | 2:02:14 | 2:02:22
Du Toit takes it into the Welsh
half. Nyakane. | 2:02:27 | 2:02:34
Pollard. Coetzee. Rhys Webb, has it
in his grasp. | 2:02:39 | 2:02:46
Wyn Jones with the tackle, Elliot
Dee arrives as well. It changes | 2:02:50 | 2:02:56
direction. Leyds, Kolisi... The
acting skipper, Steff Evans, | 2:02:56 | 2:03:01
cumbersome and make the tackle but
South Africa on the charge again | 2:03:01 | 2:03:06
through the highly influential
Malcolm Marx. It's come away on the | 2:03:06 | 2:03:10
Welsh side. Faletau scoops up
Navidi. They can't kick straight | 2:03:10 | 2:03:19
out. Marx knew that, kept it
downfield comic actor Tim feel | 2:03:19 | 2:03:29
Gelant back to Pollard. -- kept it
downfield, kept it infield. Good | 2:03:29 | 2:03:35
result for Wales, they were under
the cosh but he was isolated, Marx. | 2:03:35 | 2:03:39
It was a great turnover. I think it
was Wyn Jones. There he is, just | 2:03:39 | 2:03:46
watch, he goes in, grabbed the ball,
and that was crucial because the | 2:03:46 | 2:03:52
pressure was building. Brilliant
long kick again, good chase. They | 2:03:52 | 2:03:56
will be happy with the result,
halfway line. Time off South Africa | 2:03:56 | 2:04:05
to make more changes. Elton Jantjies
is coming on instead of Andrei | 2:04:05 | 2:04:13
Pollard. Well, it won't get any
tighter with Jantjies on the field | 2:04:13 | 2:04:22
-- in place of Handre Pollard. | 2:04:22 | 2:04:26
Change at scrum-half as well.
Schreuder is on. First touch was | 2:04:29 | 2:04:38
Schreuder, first touch for Jantjies,
hard and fast to Kriel. Leyds. | 2:04:38 | 2:04:44
Steffan Evans goes in for the ball.
South Africa hang onto it, just. Du | 2:04:47 | 2:04:52
Toit. | 2:04:52 | 2:04:55 | |
Schreuder. Wales lucky not to give a
penalty away there. Nyakane tries to | 2:04:58 | 2:05:08
fend off the Welsh captain, who
stands his ground. | 2:05:08 | 2:05:12
Jantjies. Gelant against Patchell,
Patchell does well to get back. We | 2:05:17 | 2:05:22
have seen how fast the winger is.
Good tackle, but is. South Africa so | 2:05:22 | 2:05:31
close. Now... Nyakane. | 2:05:31 | 2:05:37
-- good tackle, that is. Francois
Venter aiming for that far corner. | 2:05:42 | 2:05:50
Now Du Preez tries to get the
overhead pass. More forwards weight | 2:05:50 | 2:05:59
here. Kitshoff. De Jager on his
shoulder. Jantjies. Kriel. Jantjies | 2:05:59 | 2:06:12
again, Leyds. Take some pulling
down. Does Dillyn Leyds. Kitshoff. | 2:06:12 | 2:06:28
Gelant. Jantjies knocks it on.
Turnover ball for Wales. There is | 2:06:31 | 2:06:37
still work to do. They know they
have an advantage. They probably | 2:06:37 | 2:06:44
went really want the scrummage.
Faletau brings it out -- will not | 2:06:44 | 2:06:49
really want the scrummage. When you
look at the line-out option, they | 2:06:49 | 2:06:53
could just keep it on the park. It
is out of play. Relief for Wales. We | 2:06:53 | 2:07:03
saw the two sides of Elton Jantjies
there. Comes over immediately, a | 2:07:03 | 2:07:09
fair bit more spark to the backline
from him but then possibly an | 2:07:09 | 2:07:13
off-load in a situation where they
might not have tried it. South | 2:07:13 | 2:07:20
Africa are off quickly. Jantjies
Deventer. -- Jantjies to Francois | 2:07:20 | 2:07:28
Venter. Pieter-Steph du Toit. He has
done all the ball carrying in the | 2:07:28 | 2:07:32
second half, not all of it but a
whole lot of it. He has done a lot | 2:07:32 | 2:07:36
of ball carrying as well, absentee,
Kitshoff? South Africa playing in | 2:07:36 | 2:07:41
the right areas now. Oh... Patchell.
So, very scrappy, just a chance for | 2:07:41 | 2:07:52
Wales, and Elton Jantjies knows, he
knows... He is one of those players, | 2:07:52 | 2:07:57
he is flaky, either brilliant or
poor, and he has made a couple of | 2:07:57 | 2:08:01
big errors since coming on. When he
gets the forward ball he is | 2:08:01 | 2:08:05
brilliant. He is going forward Ben
but that wasn't a brilliant. He took | 2:08:05 | 2:08:09
his eyes off the ball, defences were
up, five minutes left. Gives Wales | 2:08:09 | 2:08:16
the opportunity to clear. Wales need
to keep them away from corner | 2:08:16 | 2:08:20
kicking range, you know? Josh Navidi
goes off. Tackle on, Dan Lydiate. -- | 2:08:20 | 2:08:33
a tackling player comes on. A
slender two point lead to protect | 2:08:33 | 2:08:37
going into the last five and a half
minutes. Wales need structure and | 2:08:37 | 2:08:42
composure now. They are in the right
areas of the pitch. Make South | 2:08:42 | 2:08:49
Africa work. If they are going to
get back to lead this match. Let | 2:08:49 | 2:08:57
them go from deep. REFEREE: You are
too close. Changes in the South | 2:08:57 | 2:09:15
African team, Bundy is not hooker
along with Trevor Nyakane, can the | 2:09:15 | 2:09:19
new members of the front row put the
same pressure on this Welsh | 2:09:19 | 2:09:23
scrummage? -- Mbonambi is not
hooker. -- on as hooker. | 2:09:23 | 2:09:33
REFEREE: It is not a really good
picture from this. | 2:09:38 | 2:09:44
Dan Lydiate. On the openside. | 2:09:51 | 2:09:58
Rhys Webb will want to get this away
quickly. This is where I don't | 2:10:03 | 2:10:11
understand the South African front
row substitutions. They have been on | 2:10:11 | 2:10:13
top all game with the clear
pressure, quite rightly so they were | 2:10:13 | 2:10:19
dominant in the front row, and now
Wales have the option. You cannot | 2:10:19 | 2:10:23
tell who is taking this scrum down
because both sides going down. Say, | 2:10:23 | 2:10:28
it is not our fault because that
dominance was there before, it is | 2:10:28 | 2:10:32
not there because they have changed
the front row, so... | 2:10:32 | 2:10:38
Pieter-Steph du Toit, who started on
the flank of South Africa, has gone | 2:10:43 | 2:10:47
into the second row. Wales actually
clear that ball very well and Rhys | 2:10:47 | 2:10:52
Webb threads it downfield. That is a
wonderful kick by Rhys Webb. A set | 2:10:52 | 2:10:58
piece which has been creeping all
day. Exactly direct. The execution. | 2:10:58 | 2:11:08
That's great game management, but
also, Faletau taking the ball up and | 2:11:08 | 2:11:12
making it easy for this man. | 2:11:12 | 2:11:16
Mbonambi will throw, but what a
different place it is. | 2:11:22 | 2:11:28
De Jager with the win. Kolisi
charges up towards the 22, doesn't | 2:11:32 | 2:11:42
get there. Jantjies... Oh! It is
three minutes to go, man of the | 2:11:42 | 2:11:49
match time. I think Malcolm Marx has
been brilliant, Faletau has been | 2:11:49 | 2:11:53
brilliant but for me on his debut,
Hadleigh Parkes is my man of the | 2:11:53 | 2:11:58
match. He has had a solid
performance and two tries. There he | 2:11:58 | 2:12:02
is. | 2:12:02 | 2:12:12 | |
He must say to himself, work yet to
do. Yes! LAUGHTER Don't celebrate | 2:12:14 | 2:12:19
yet.
Lydiate comes away with the ball. | 2:12:19 | 2:12:24
Here is Rhys Patchell, Hallam Amos
off his wing. | 2:12:24 | 2:12:29
Dan Lydiate picks up, passes to Cory
Hill. Patchell waits, Scott Williams | 2:12:34 | 2:12:41
charges. This is where South Africa
have been good at holding Wales up, | 2:12:41 | 2:12:50
in those direct situations. The
kicking game, which was so | 2:12:50 | 2:12:57
profitable for Wales, has now given
way to the countdown to 80 minutes | 2:12:57 | 2:13:05
on the blue clock. Penalty advantage
to South Africa. Turnover at the | 2:13:05 | 2:13:10
very least. | 2:13:10 | 2:13:12
Mohoje led the charge, Jantjies,
Venter. Good defence. This is | 2:13:15 | 2:13:25
Lukhanyo Am on the field. Another
replacement. To the penalty, and | 2:13:25 | 2:13:33
minute and a quarter left. Crucial
that South Africa make a lot of | 2:13:33 | 2:13:40
ground. Yes. And make touch here.
Yes, this is where... Uzair Cassiem | 2:13:40 | 2:13:48
is on for South Africa, Donovan,
goes. Different mentality, in your | 2:13:48 | 2:13:53
own 22 you throw the ball and take
risks but it is great defence by | 2:13:53 | 2:13:58
Wales. Now the penalty, put them in,
the penalty in kick range, so | 2:13:58 | 2:14:02
discipline will have to be a
priority for Wales. Well, the only | 2:14:02 | 2:14:11
person immune to all the stress!
Bongi Mbonambi, and it is quick to | 2:14:11 | 2:14:23
Steven Kitshoff. Schreuder. | 2:14:23 | 2:14:25
Soon we will be into overtime.
Mohoje Drive song, Schreuder checks | 2:14:30 | 2:14:35
where everybody is. Here they are.
Jantjies. Scott Andrews. He has been | 2:14:35 | 2:14:43
on for 80 as a prop. Pieter-Steph du
Toit. Cory Hill hangs onto an ankle, | 2:14:43 | 2:14:50
du Toit gets back up, turned over,
Rhys Patchell can kick it off the | 2:14:50 | 2:14:54
park. It is still in play, no, says
the Welsh crowd. Oh, yes, say South | 2:14:54 | 2:15:04
Africa. Wales hold him up. Whistle
goes. Wales advantage, whistle, or | 2:15:04 | 2:15:15
Welsh win, two out of four for Wales
in the autumn series, and that is | 2:15:15 | 2:15:19
the mood at the end of four had Test
matches. Exhaustion for the captain, | 2:15:19 | 2:15:27
delight in the crowd, Wales have
beaten South Africa 24-22. | 2:15:27 | 2:15:34
CHEERING | 2:15:36 | 2:15:38
CHEERING. | 2:15:38 | 2:15:44
STUDIO: What annoys on the final
whistle. I thought this was the game | 2:15:50 | 2:15:56
nobody wanted, 66,000 people in the
Principality Stadium love that from | 2:15:56 | 2:15:59
the first moment of the last in
terms of drama. Compelling | 2:15:59 | 2:16:04
entertainment and Wales got the win
they deserved in the end. They were | 2:16:04 | 2:16:10
desperate for it as well. The
caption at the start of the show | 2:16:10 | 2:16:14
showed all the players Wales were
missing so hanging on in the second | 2:16:14 | 2:16:17
half like | 2:16:17 | 2:16:18
missing so hanging on in the second
half like they did, they went behind | 2:16:18 | 2:16:20
and showed fantastic character to
win the penalty then for me the | 2:16:20 | 2:16:23
defence had character in the last
ten minutes was outstanding, they | 2:16:23 | 2:16:26
scrambled well and one turnovers.
Not an amazing performance but a big | 2:16:26 | 2:16:30
result for the Welsh team. Bobby,
midway through the second-half you | 2:16:30 | 2:16:35
thought you might have won it. For
me it didn't change the outcome. I | 2:16:35 | 2:16:40
was so disappointed with the first
half, nothing they did could have | 2:16:40 | 2:16:44
brought it back for me. The momentum
started to go their way a little, | 2:16:44 | 2:16:47
maybe they should capitalise on
that. Here is the man of the match | 2:16:47 | 2:16:51
and he would have thought it, Sonia.
Hadley Parkes, three years ago you | 2:16:51 | 2:17:01
were on a sheep farm, could you
believe this? Dream come true. Never | 2:17:01 | 2:17:05
thought this day would come. Humbled
by the opportunity and it is a huge | 2:17:05 | 2:17:09
privilege and an honour to play in
front of a fantastic crowd at a | 2:17:09 | 2:17:13
fantastic stadium, it is a lovely
crowd, so yes. Described your | 2:17:13 | 2:17:18
emotions as you took the ball from
Taulupe Faletau and were over the | 2:17:18 | 2:17:22
line on your debut. A fantastic
pass, skilled work, he is a | 2:17:22 | 2:17:28
fantastic player, so to get a try is
nice and to get double, you dream of | 2:17:28 | 2:17:32
these kinds of day so very happy.
The anthems are always emotional | 2:17:32 | 2:17:37
here in Cardiff so what was it like
to stand there and sing loud and | 2:17:37 | 2:17:41
proud? It was an amazing feeling.
You always read and hear about | 2:17:41 | 2:17:47
Cardiff Arms Park or the
Principality Stadium, how emotional | 2:17:47 | 2:17:50
the Welsh people are, and is I made
a hard effort to learn the outcome | 2:17:50 | 2:17:56
and hopefully I didn't stab it up.
You didn't, congratulations, man of | 2:17:56 | 2:18:00
the match on your debut, I will
bring in your captain, Alun Wyn | 2:18:00 | 2:18:03
Jones, how much did you need that
win in the context? We wanted to | 2:18:03 | 2:18:10
finish 2017 for the fans. It has
been interesting from our point of | 2:18:10 | 2:18:16
view in the autumn, we needed to cap
it off today and I am proud of the | 2:18:16 | 2:18:21
squad and the character we showed to
come back in the second-half. South | 2:18:21 | 2:18:24
Africa had a purple patch, 19
unanswered points, why do you think | 2:18:24 | 2:18:28
you struggled in that phase. It is
always difficult coming out of the | 2:18:28 | 2:18:32
half but we had a purple patch of
the first whistle and we are proud | 2:18:32 | 2:18:37
that we came back. We probably
missed a few opportunities but we | 2:18:37 | 2:18:42
needed to finish on a high. A lot of
players injured or unavailable. What | 2:18:42 | 2:18:46
does it say about the sport that you
came through at the end? We are | 2:18:46 | 2:18:50
disappointed in the results, some of
them, but positive going forward, we | 2:18:50 | 2:18:54
will not shy away from the fact that
we lost two from four but we are | 2:18:54 | 2:18:58
positive and will try to change
things. Thank you. Much celebration | 2:18:58 | 2:19:06
for the Welsh | 2:19:06 | 2:19:07
things. Thank you. Much celebration
for the Welsh fans here today as we | 2:19:07 | 2:19:08
look at some facts and figures of
this final match of what has been a | 2:19:08 | 2:19:13
really intriguing autumn series of
matches not just here but | 2:19:13 | 2:19:17
Twickenham, the Aviva Stadium and
Merrifield as well as here at the | 2:19:17 | 2:19:21
Principality Stadium. Jeremy, what
was your take on the quality of the | 2:19:21 | 2:19:24
match overall. Second division at
best. | 2:19:24 | 2:19:29 | |
match overall. Second division at
best. It was entertaining, I am not | 2:19:29 | 2:19:31
taking that from anybody. If you are
neutral we have seen a good number | 2:19:31 | 2:19:35
of tries, high scoring at times and
high pace but the error count, 13 | 2:19:35 | 2:19:40
from South Africa, seven from Wales
so not great skills. Lletget a South | 2:19:40 | 2:19:44
African perspective on the result,
Sonia. A few dejected faces as your | 2:19:44 | 2:19:51
team-mates troop off, described the
level of disappointment at not | 2:19:51 | 2:19:53
ending the store with a victory. We
are very disappointed, we really | 2:19:53 | 2:19:58
wanted to finish of the season, it
has been a tough season. The way we | 2:19:58 | 2:20:03
started today wasn't good enough. We
were chasing the game from the first | 2:20:03 | 2:20:07
half but I thought we came back very
hard in the second half and were | 2:20:07 | 2:20:12
more physical. Just making mistakes
is difficult. You got your noses in | 2:20:12 | 2:20:18
front towards the end. Why couldn't
you quite close it out? I think | 2:20:18 | 2:20:23
patience, you know? When we got to
the half we make silly mistakes, and | 2:20:23 | 2:20:29
you have to be disciplined here
especially at the game, you have to | 2:20:29 | 2:20:33
give the discipline. We made silly
mistakes and each guy make silly | 2:20:33 | 2:20:36
mistakes and it leads to another.
It's all about discipline and | 2:20:36 | 2:20:41
maturity. We will learn from this
and it will make us better this | 2:20:41 | 2:20:44
year. Thank you for your time. We
saw huge frustration from Alistair | 2:20:44 | 2:20:52
Coetzee as the ball was declared
dead on the match was gone. Is he | 2:20:52 | 2:20:56
gone? I mean... I am not close
enough, to the corridors of power, | 2:20:56 | 2:21:03
but I imagine tremendous pressure is
on him. We have said a number of | 2:21:03 | 2:21:06
times, this is a young side, but
that first half and a large portion | 2:21:06 | 2:21:10
of the second one not good enough at
this level. Jeremy has mentioned it, | 2:21:10 | 2:21:15
these are professionals who are
coached and paid to be putting a | 2:21:15 | 2:21:19
high quality of rugby on the field,
and see a Kolisi, saying every time | 2:21:19 | 2:21:24
we got in their half there was a
mistake, in pressured situations we | 2:21:24 | 2:21:28
made mistakes. If I was one of these
players I would be disappointed with | 2:21:28 | 2:21:32
the level of finishing they have
gone through here. They came all the | 2:21:32 | 2:21:36
way back, gave themselves the
opportunity but winning is a habit | 2:21:36 | 2:21:39
and unfortunately so is losing. They
are becoming that kind of team who | 2:21:39 | 2:21:43
are not winning these tight games.
Does the victory for Wales paper | 2:21:43 | 2:21:55
over a few cracks, Martyn? I am not
sure about that. They have tried to | 2:21:55 | 2:21:58
evolve their game this autumn, there
is no doubt about that. That was | 2:21:58 | 2:22:00
built on guts today. Ultimately they
won because of their kicking game. | 2:22:00 | 2:22:03
They didn't score a try after the
38th minute and that was a charge, | 2:22:03 | 2:22:06
so they have a long way to go. We
seem to have more depth in our squad | 2:22:06 | 2:22:11
than we have had for a long time so
the Six Nations will tell whether we | 2:22:11 | 2:22:14
have papered over the cracks or not.
Some key moments in the second half, | 2:22:14 | 2:22:19
turnover is close to the Welsh line,
at moments like this, | 2:22:19 | 2:22:23
turnover is close to the Welsh line,
at moments like this, matches swing. | 2:22:23 | 2:22:24
This was on the 70th minute and when
South Africa had all the momentum. | 2:22:24 | 2:22:28
Wyn Jones, it is a grey area, he has
timed it superbly, got over the | 2:22:28 | 2:22:34
ball, won the turnover and small
things like that | 2:22:34 | 2:22:45
make a huge difference. Again,
defence from the inside, Wyn Jones | 2:22:46 | 2:22:48
again and Rhys Webb with a big
impact when he came on. | 2:22:48 | 2:22:50
again and Rhys Webb with a big
impact when he came on. Look at the | 2:22:50 | 2:22:51
numbers for the Welsh pack, 3-8, all
in double figures tackling so you | 2:22:51 | 2:22:54
can't fault their characters.
Absolutely. The characters stood | 2:22:54 | 2:22:55
out, but for me you talk about the
tactics incorrect, you have a man on | 2:22:55 | 2:23:00
debut from the left wing plane fly
half, passing inside the fly half | 2:23:00 | 2:23:03
who was off the bench not getting
the ball. There is something wrong. | 2:23:03 | 2:23:09
The coach always get the blame for
that, and ultimately sometimes loses | 2:23:09 | 2:23:13
his job as a result. Isn't that the
player's responsibility or whoever | 2:23:13 | 2:23:17
is the leader of that by division,
to say, no, you should be there? | 2:23:17 | 2:23:23
Absolutely but I don't think that is
built on the field. It is built as | 2:23:23 | 2:23:27
you grow as a squad and start to get
to know each other and whose role it | 2:23:27 | 2:23:31
is. It ultimately goes to the coach
because he selects the players. If | 2:23:31 | 2:23:36
you select | 2:23:36 | 2:23:46
players who keep making mistakes and
can't make decisions or selection | 2:23:49 | 2:23:51
policy is wrong and needs to change.
As a Welshman, when they sub Pollard | 2:23:51 | 2:23:54
for Jantjies Yuvraj your hands
because Pollard was taking the game. | 2:23:54 | 2:23:57
With five minutes ago, big choral
awful substitution. Inexperience | 2:23:57 | 2:23:58
both sides. Neither side could steer
a comfortable position. South Africa | 2:23:58 | 2:24:03
got into a winning position and
because of a lack of experience | 2:24:03 | 2:24:07
couldn't take it home. We sail from
this game is complex and a lot of | 2:24:07 | 2:24:13
laws can be interpreted differently,
not least foul play, obviously. If | 2:24:13 | 2:24:17
somebody goes for a yellow card it
has a major impact because | 2:24:17 | 2:24:21
invariably teams scored tries in
that period when somebody is down to | 2:24:21 | 2:24:24
14. Is this yellow card? Where?
That, yes! If that is a yellow card, | 2:24:24 | 2:24:32
then the other two, the one from
Evans and Shingler, if one is not | 2:24:32 | 2:24:39
given and the others aren't, that is
OK, but if one is you expect them or | 2:24:39 | 2:24:43
to begin. We just saw inconsistency.
The concern is, you could give | 2:24:43 | 2:24:48
yellow card but you could end up
with 12 on 12 which you don't want | 2:24:48 | 2:24:52
to see. It is a physical game. One
moment slowdown sometimes it looks | 2:24:52 | 2:24:57
worse, but it is such a grey area.
Mohoje, that was yellow. That was | 2:24:57 | 2:25:03
the first one we saw, straight in.
But so was Shingler, we could | 2:25:03 | 2:25:11
have... You could yellow card every
ruck then. But also the sprinkle box | 2:25:11 | 2:25:18
could have, would have, should have,
did they? No. You have to look at | 2:25:18 | 2:25:23
yourself in the result more than
anything else. And with you. The | 2:25:23 | 2:25:27
Springboks had, you can go back to
the start when Wales had a chance | 2:25:27 | 2:25:31
after nine minutes to score a third
try Under 21-0 after nine minutes | 2:25:31 | 2:25:35
you would have thought it would have
been game over. Ultimately it would | 2:25:35 | 2:25:39
have been. And negative for Wales
was they created two fantastic tries | 2:25:39 | 2:25:46
from kicks, one was charged down,
again, we didn't stress or finish | 2:25:46 | 2:25:51
anything off apart from those and
create many try scoring | 2:25:51 | 2:25:54
opportunities. I wouldn't be too
worried about those insomuch as it | 2:25:54 | 2:25:59
was good execution, and finishing.
You could question the creation, but | 2:25:59 | 2:26:03
I thought that was clever, smart
play, they did simple things very | 2:26:03 | 2:26:10
well, they went straight and
forward, very direct, which they | 2:26:10 | 2:26:13
haven't been in the past games. The
Welsh team walking around now in a | 2:26:13 | 2:26:18
semi-lap of honour. If we were doing
in end of autumn report on Wales, | 2:26:18 | 2:26:23
what would it be, Martyn? What
grade? I would give it to be. Purely | 2:26:23 | 2:26:28
for the fact... -- a B grade. Look
at the players missing, a small | 2:26:28 | 2:26:36
nation with a small playing Paul,
there is competition for places | 2:26:36 | 2:26:39
going into the Six Nations. Six
Nations Rugby is totally different | 2:26:39 | 2:26:43
to autumn international rugby so I
wouldn't write us off. I wouldn't | 2:26:43 | 2:26:47
write Wales. As we have chatted
about a little, compare it to how | 2:26:47 | 2:26:54
Australia have done against other
sites, South Africa have done, and | 2:26:54 | 2:26:56
you look at Wales and think they are
far behind the likes of Ireland, | 2:26:56 | 2:27:02
England and even Scotland's. I
wouldn't say we're behind Scotland, | 2:27:02 | 2:27:08
that's the opening game. Heading
towards a B minus grade? See, that's | 2:27:08 | 2:27:14
generous. Where are South Africa at
the end of a long season? It's | 2:27:14 | 2:27:19
always dangerous when you say the
team has achieved first, and the | 2:27:19 | 2:27:23
first has been record defeats to
Ireland, to New Zealand, it hasn't | 2:27:23 | 2:27:27
been a great season like that but
they have squeezed out Wales from | 2:27:27 | 2:27:31
scoring four tries against them like
you said it would be the first time | 2:27:31 | 2:27:35
that had happened. So the defence in
the second half better. I would say | 2:27:35 | 2:27:40
C- for the South African side. With
the talent they have got on their | 2:27:40 | 2:27:45
ability to achieve in this space,
South Africa will be disappointed. | 2:27:45 | 2:27:48
So you will get the last word here
but when we are back in the | 2:27:48 | 2:27:52
springtime for the Six Nations who
wins the Six Nations given what we | 2:27:52 | 2:27:55
have seen? Not Wales! LAUGHTER | 2:27:55 | 2:27:58
wins the Six Nations given what we
have seen? Not Wales! LAUGHTER. | 2:27:58 | 2:28:00
Martyn? At the moment England.
Nobody touches them at the minute. | 2:28:00 | 2:28:05
Bobby? For me I love the way
Scotland played Australia, they are | 2:28:05 | 2:28:10
outstanding, but the Irish side, a
long way between Ireland and | 2:28:10 | 2:28:13
England, they are ahead of the pack
at the moment. If Scotland win the | 2:28:13 | 2:28:17
opening game. They come Wayne to the
occasion. Great fan of the last four | 2:28:17 | 2:28:21
weeks. You can say for certain that
what we have seen over the last four | 2:28:21 | 2:28:27
weeks as international rugby and
rich form and we will see your for | 2:28:27 | 2:28:30
Wales against Scotland, if you're
counting, in 63 days. Goodbye. | 2:28:30 | 2:28:42 |
