Hello and welcome to the BBC sports centre. Over the next 15 minutes we

:00:00.:00:11.

will have all the latest news, previews and interviews ahead of a

:00:12.:00:18.

busy weekend. This is Saturday Sportsday.

:00:19.:00:29.

Hello. Here's what's coming up: On the Eve of England and Wales at

:00:30.:00:36.

Twickenham in the Six Nations we look back on the same classic

:00:37.:00:40.

fixture 40 years ago and meet the Irish referee who made a decision so

:00:41.:00:45.

controversial it was immortalised in song. Sport and culture on

:00:46.:00:50.

International Women's Day, we will be finding out why girls from some

:00:51.:00:53.

of the world's poorest countries are visiting the UK. And you know the

:00:54.:00:57.

phrase you are never too old? When it comes to athletics, it's true. We

:00:58.:01:02.

visit the pensioners in track and field. All that to come. First,

:01:03.:01:06.

let's look at some of today's headlines.

:01:07.:01:12.

She was on the show last week and now she's won Great Britain's first

:01:13.:01:23.

medal of the Winter Paralympics. Jade Etherington finishes second in

:01:24.:01:26.

the downhill this morning. We will have more in a few minutes.

:01:27.:01:33.

Northern Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell and Wales Jamie

:01:34.:01:40.

Donaldson are one shot off the lead in the Golf Championship in Miami.

:01:41.:01:48.

And as game set and match for the new doubles partnership as the two

:01:49.:01:51.

Wimbledon champions claim their first win in round one of the Indian

:01:52.:01:57.

Wells Open. Lots going on today. Let's start with the Winter

:01:58.:02:00.

Paralympics and that first medal of the games for Britain's Jade

:02:01.:02:04.

Etherington with the aid of her guide Caroline Powell. She has taken

:02:05.:02:10.

silver in the visually impaired downhill skiing.

:02:11.:02:13.

An incredible achievement by Jade Etherington and her guide Caroline

:02:14.:02:17.

Powell. Silver on the opening day. You couldn't ask for much better.

:02:18.:02:21.

Let's put that into some perspective. She's from

:02:22.:02:25.

Lincolnshire, which isn't exactly renowned for its snowy mountains and

:02:26.:02:31.

she also has glaucoma, she effectively has only 5% vision,

:02:32.:02:35.

travelling at speeds of over a hin kilometres an hour -- over 100

:02:36.:02:40.

kilometres an hour must make for a scary experience. Together with her

:02:41.:02:45.

guide they were fantastic together. They came down in second position,

:02:46.:02:50.

got that silver medal and understandably were delighted when I

:02:51.:02:54.

spoke to them later. It hasn't really sunk in yet. Hopefully today

:02:55.:02:59.

when we get the medal it will be when... Yeah, I am really excited

:03:00.:03:04.

and I am an official proud Paralympian now, it's a great

:03:05.:03:07.

feeling and it's good to get the flowers and get into that and I am

:03:08.:03:12.

proud of me and Caroline working together today and our performance

:03:13.:03:17.

and hopefully we can continue. Understandably delighted after that

:03:18.:03:20.

historic achievement. Kelly Gallagher was also in action in the

:03:21.:03:23.

same event but finished 6th. On the bright side she does have her

:03:24.:03:27.

stronger events to come later in the week. Let's talk about curling. In

:03:28.:03:34.

2006 the wheelchair curlers won silver in Italy. They're going for a

:03:35.:03:37.

medal here in Sochi. It hasn't got off to the best start. They lost 6-3

:03:38.:03:42.

to Canada. It's worth pointing out Canada are the two-time Paralympic

:03:43.:03:48.

champions and a medal favourite here at these Games in Russia. An

:03:49.:03:53.

incredible achievement for Jade Etherington and her guide, they'll

:03:54.:03:56.

hope they can carry that momentum to their next event, they have four

:03:57.:04:01.

more to come and it could be the cat alist for further -- catalyst for

:04:02.:04:12.

further success for Great Britain. Nick Hope there in Sochi and you can

:04:13.:04:16.

keep up-to-date on all the latest from the Winter Paralympics by

:04:17.:04:19.

checking out the BBC Sport website. Now when it comes to sporting

:04:20.:04:22.

rivalries they don't get much bigger than England against Wales in rugby

:04:23.:04:26.

union. This Sunday the two will go head to head again - in the last but

:04:27.:04:30.

one round of the Six Nations Championship. It's always a huge

:04:31.:04:33.

game with plenty of needle, but 40 years ago a certain Irish referee

:04:34.:04:36.

made a decision in the fixture against Wales - so controversial it

:04:37.:04:40.

was made into a song. Patrick Geary went to meet him.

:04:41.:04:42.

It's Twickenham in 1974, the great Welsh team of the era are looking

:04:43.:04:45.

for a win that would give them the Five Nations championship and John

:04:46.:04:47.

West, a young referee from Ireland is making his debut. To be appointed

:04:48.:04:51.

to a match like this is absolutely brilliant. Obviously I would be

:04:52.:04:54.

heightly nervous and pumped with adrenalin. -- highly nervous. The

:04:55.:05:01.

game is in the balance when Williams sees an opportunity.

:05:02.:05:09.

The referee has awarded a 25. The whole of Wales is up in arms. Wales

:05:10.:05:19.

lost and an entertainer named Max Boys immortalised West's performance

:05:20.:05:25.

The sunshine... A blind Irish referee. All these years on and with

:05:26.:05:31.

perfect eyesight West has no regrets. I don't spend a time

:05:32.:05:36.

turning at night saying, oh, I should have done this and that. You

:05:37.:05:39.

make a call, you back your judgment to make a call. How rugby's changed.

:05:40.:05:43.

Now John would be able to refer to any number of angles to check

:05:44.:05:49.

important decisions. He now uses video to spot stamping and other

:05:50.:05:56.

dangerous play as a commissioner. The players are aware they're under

:05:57.:06:00.

surveillance. It's probably cleaner than when we were doing it when

:06:01.:06:05.

almost - they all had a psychopath lurking around in the background.

:06:06.:06:10.

Now they tend to be identified a little quicker! As well as bad

:06:11.:06:13.

behaviour referees can check a number of decisions during the game

:06:14.:06:17.

using video technology. Can it be used too often? I was at a game

:06:18.:06:26.

recently and I think there was 57 minutes for the first half which was

:06:27.:06:29.

ridiculous. They were asking all sorts. The guy could just make up

:06:30.:06:34.

your mind, you know. There wasn't as if they were critical decisions or

:06:35.:06:37.

anything. This weekend John is back at Twickenham Twickenham. What does

:06:38.:06:46.

he think when he hears that song? # A blind Irish referee... I must get

:06:47.:06:57.

the royalties! Ireland play Italy in today's action and then Scotland

:06:58.:07:01.

take on France, both are live on the BBC. That match we have been talking

:07:02.:07:05.

about at Twickenham gets under way tomorrow at 3.00pm.

:07:06.:07:12.

Something tells me the score there will be a bit closer than the

:07:13.:07:15.

women's Six Nations result yesterday - where England beat Wales 35-3. And

:07:16.:07:19.

we're sticking with the women and rugby theme because today is

:07:20.:07:22.

International Women's Day and to mark it a unique project is going on

:07:23.:07:25.

involving nearly 100 girls from India, Africa, South America and the

:07:26.:07:28.

Carribbean - all from deprived areas - all coming together to play rugby.

:07:29.:07:32.

Our Correspondent Joe Wilson was there when they met up in London.

:07:33.:07:36.

There are millions of children in the world with next to nothing, a

:07:37.:07:39.

few have a rugby ball in their hands. From eight of the most

:07:40.:07:42.

disadvantaged communities around the world teams of young rugby players

:07:43.:07:46.

have descended upon London and they are all girls. They're here to

:07:47.:07:52.

express themselves through sport, through dance, to find Common Ground

:07:53.:07:58.

and find confidence. Already there is a change, confidence, which they

:07:59.:08:02.

didn't have at home. They can freely speak. They can freely talk to

:08:03.:08:06.

anyone which they didn't have. I think something good coming out. All

:08:07.:08:11.

the girls are being hosted by schools in and around London and

:08:12.:08:13.

staying with local families. The idea is that they exchange ideas,

:08:14.:08:18.

exchange culture and then next week they'll play a rugby tournament. Who

:08:19.:08:23.

is the best player in the team? I am. I am also the Captain of the

:08:24.:08:29.

team. Most Mostly we try our best to try to win. We will win on the day.

:08:30.:08:33.

The charity running the project is called Tour Aid and the value of

:08:34.:08:37.

coming on tour will be felt when the girls get home, that's the idea.

:08:38.:08:43.

They should go away as ambassadors for their generation because they

:08:44.:08:47.

are representing their generation. What I will say is that it is OK

:08:48.:08:52.

when they get back they will feel different because the change must

:08:53.:08:58.

come from within. Young players today, global role models for the

:08:59.:09:04.

future? Those are big aspirations and young girls having fun. Good for

:09:05.:09:10.

them. We're halfway through the World

:09:11.:09:12.

Indoor Athletics Championships - which is going on in Sopot in Poland

:09:13.:09:16.

this weekend and it's been a pretty good day for Britain so far. The

:09:17.:09:20.

BBC's Phil Jones and Colin Jackson have been watching this morning's

:09:21.:09:22.

action. Fascinating morning on day two of

:09:23.:09:24.

the World Indoor At yet licks Championships here -- Athletics

:09:25.:09:32.

Championships. Colin can talk about this It's

:09:33.:09:39.

important to get the outdoor champions that people know,

:09:40.:09:44.

recognisable faces to come indoors and Shelley san a big personality.

:09:45.:09:52.

It's the only sprint title she hasn't won. It will be a serious

:09:53.:09:56.

challenge. She had her game face on through the interview area, you know

:09:57.:10:04.

she means business. Veronica Campbell Brown coming badge from a

:10:05.:10:08.

drugs suspension -- coming back from a drugs suspension. A long way off

:10:09.:10:12.

her personal best. For all of us wondering why she choose this to

:10:13.:10:15.

return, but she is the defending champion, so she is having a go. It

:10:16.:10:22.

was a good morning for Britain, it gave us as boost over

:10:23.:10:26.

disappointments yesterday especially in the hurdles, your event. It was a

:10:27.:10:29.

successful day for us, both our athletes in the hurdles, Andy and

:10:30.:10:34.

Will ran personal bests and you can't ask for much more. That sets

:10:35.:10:37.

them up nicely for tomorrow's semifinal. Thank you very much

:10:38.:10:40.

indeed. There was good news from a British point of view for the relay

:10:41.:10:45.

teams, the men's and women's teams are through to tomorrow's final. We

:10:46.:10:49.

have had an enjoyable morning Colin and I and hopefully you can join us

:10:50.:10:54.

again for BBC2 coverage that starts at 5. 10pm.

:10:55.:10:59.

What happens when those athletes Phil was talking about retire from

:11:00.:11:02.

the top level? Well, just like in tennis and golf, there's another

:11:03.:11:06.

world of competition for them once they get to a certain age. It's

:11:07.:11:09.

called Masters Athletics but it's not just for the ex-pros. Alex Webb

:11:10.:11:12.

went to meet some track veterans ahead of this weekend's British

:11:13.:11:27.

Masters Indoor Championships. Inspire a generation, that was the

:11:28.:11:32.

slogan of London 2012. Perhaps we shouldn't just be looking at schools

:11:33.:11:36.

or youth clubs to uncover our nation's talent. They're younger

:11:37.:11:40.

than me! There are other generations breaking records and winning medals.

:11:41.:11:49.

Angela is a relative newcomer to the world of athletics. I wanted to

:11:50.:11:53.

raise money for heart research. I run the marathon on my 60th

:11:54.:11:57.

birthday. You are never too old to do anything. You can start slowly

:11:58.:12:00.

but I have to say I did feel embarrassed going out running when I

:12:01.:12:03.

first started training for the marathon. I used to go out in the

:12:04.:12:07.

dark. We need to be more switched on. Around half of us fail to do the

:12:08.:12:11.

recommended weekly amount of exercise. Inactivity is having a

:12:12.:12:15.

negative effect on our economy. We tend to do less and less physical

:12:16.:12:20.

activity as we get older. With an ageing population events like this

:12:21.:12:24.

could be the answer. Angela has gone on to become the best marathon

:12:25.:12:30.

runner in the world in her age cat combree -- category and only came to

:12:31.:12:34.

the sport seven years ago. Some athletes here competed in their

:12:35.:12:38.

youth. I have raced a lot of names going over the years, Colin Jackson,

:12:39.:12:44.

Tony Jarrett. All the top hurdlers. Later this month some of these

:12:45.:12:49.

athletes will be travelling to Budapest to the championships. They

:12:50.:12:55.

might find themselves up against a former Olympian. It took me six

:12:56.:13:02.

years or so before I really became any good. Don't expect quick-fixes

:13:03.:13:06.

but if you keep at it and you have to work and train hard, you have to

:13:07.:13:14.

train night nightly, train just like athletes. Whether it's track and

:13:15.:13:20.

field, cross-country or marathon running there is a world of

:13:21.:13:24.

athletics to get involved in. It's never too late to reach the very

:13:25.:13:29.

top. Time to tell you about this

:13:30.:13:34.

lunchtime's football. Arsenal are beating Everton 1-0. Raith Rovers

:13:35.:13:41.

are drawing with St Johnston. It's 0-0 with West Brom and Manchester

:13:42.:13:44.

United. There is full coverage on the BBC Sport website. I am back on

:13:45.:13:50.

Sportsday at 6. 30pm on BBC News. Bye.
