Scotland v England Six Nations Rugby

Scotland and England are normally confined to the playing field. 700

years ago they were played out on the battlefield. Robert the Bruce

sent Edward's army home to think again unsecured Scottish

independence from England. Over four centuries later, the battle

witnessed English forces rout Bonnie Prince Charlie's army.

Military encounters have now made way for sporting ones. Following a

failed referendum on Scottish devolution a year earlier, England

cannot talk secure or a Grand Slam. The decade on and at the height of

the poll tax controversy, Scotland played the Five Nations decider at

Murrayfield. And so to the present. We prepared ourselves for another

match. In the 14th century, Henry of Lancaster or brought in English

match is not going to be won by political hyperbole but the names

in the bars until the last moment. It is absolutely bitter out there.

Our three wise owls are here in the studio and not on the touchline. A

big moment for Scotland. Hugely exciting. It is a Calcutta Cup

match. The coach has but a lot of pressure on his team publicly. This

is a big day for Scotland. When you have -- when you look at the

England team, could it be the start of something big? I hope it is. It

is the start of something and I hope it will lead to 2015. It does

not look like a team that is capable of winning a World Cup, but

I am sure that five or six or seven of those will be there in 2015.

They are unfamiliar names on both sides. As the neutral, what you

expect? I do not know what I expect from England. Very new. They have

not played with each other. They have a new coach. They will want to

play an expansive game. But conditions may not favour them. It

is not a question of Scotland being favourites, they have to win. The

do everything well in the game except for a win matches. They just

have not got the patience to go for the try. They will go through the

phases in early on and then dropped the ball. They are never in control

of the game for that they need to win this game. That is why Andy

Robinson has put the pressure on the players. The overall majority

well. But when France had a sniff of the line, they took every

impressions of France? They looked very strong. Or they had a couple

concentration for the whole 80 minutes. That is when France

capitalised. The defence were awesome. If they get a bit of

structure and harmony there, who knows how could they could be.

France were like a bulldozer. They squashed and squeeze Italy. Italy

pounced. How important our new coaches? What with the new England

coach do? The big day has finally arrived. You're no stranger to

Murrayfield. What are the emotions? Excitement. Anticipation. A little

bit nervous. It is not about any, it is about the team. We have had a

12 a preparation. We are looking forward to the challenges that will

be presented today. You have talked about the type of rugby you would

like to play. What are your thoughts about the weather?

Conditions will play a part in the game. We have talked about

different ways of playing. We were to make sure we pick the right path.

People follow him, he talks sense. A number of them spoke. We went a

collective sense of players' responsibility. You have a

responsibility to deliver something for the England fans. How will the

players handle that? The key message is to enjoy it. We were the

people who are in the rugby clubs and at home supporting to feel

connected to the team. Players feel that responsibility it and they

He is said to smile with his teeth, not with his eyes. He is one of the

toughest guys mentally. If he has the characteristics of his father,

he will be OK. I am sure that Andy Robinson will be hoping they do a

him along. Was your father Your Hero? Yes. Pretty much. I have

grown up going to every game he has played in. I have followed him

difficult coaching my son. We do not know any different. At I have

always coached him at Saracens. We will talk about rugby like a father

and son would do. When we come to this environment, it is coach and

player. How proud are you this work for me to sit here and be anything,

as parents, we are immensely proud. You realise how much work you need

to put in to get the new team together to create a new

environment. You still live at home with your father. Some people may

be surprised to hear that? What is that like? It is brilliant to have

many unknowns, it is really important. If Scotland gave this

crowd something to cheer about, it could be a wonderful 20 minutes.

One thing we do know about is the pairing of Chris Cusiter and Dan

Parks. Andy Robbins son has got the next 80 minutes. He is picking a

team to win this game tonight, and that is why he has picked Dan Parks.

He is tactically one of the best kickers of the rugby ball in world

rugby. He has limitations, but he can control the game and get cost

likes to be aggressive and abrasive. -- David Denton. He likes to be

confrontational. He is doing really well. Perhaps more of that and the

of that stuff makes a difference. You should have the skill to do it

but the game has been strewn with errors. In the first minute, a good

bit of skill by Scotland which came simply a missed tackle. Look at the

momentum Scotland have got. It came to nothing. That was almost

symptomatic of Scotland. They just did someone on the shoulder to

offload. That craze momentum. They have not managed to get that.

Paterson said he felt that Dan Parks almost had no option but to

kick because England's defence was so good. I think on some occasions,

yes. On so many, but was set up. A good kick is made better, even

better by the chase. The defensive line is not been sent to prevent

England from counter-attacking. Bella Tan 8 catch the ball, England

What about England overall? They have been nine Scotland. They got

be giving away penalties. Chris Ashton should know better as well.

Ben Youngs needs to do the basics well. There is a basic, and he did

International rugby is about stepping up, and some of those

mistakes and not caused by a fast and intense game. Their basic

mistakes. These players are better than that. Unforced errors. You

cannot always explain them. Nine times out of 10, the player would

execute that moves, but in that environment, it is harder. What has

been your take on Charlie Hodgson? England will be happy I think

colour because there have had a lot of possession. I think Dan Parks is

taking the ball to the mind a bit better, but I think his kicking is

poor. I think England are conscious of Charlie Hutcheon's defensive

frailties. They can keep chipping away. I just think they're trying

to play a bit much too early. made the point at the starts about

why a Chris Cusiter and Dan Parks were picked. Yes. They were clearly

strategy was. We are not saying much. I always say, when you were

scrapping around, go to basics. England have got good ball runners,

ball carriers. Use them. Look at the bench. Scotland have got very

experienced players there. England have got five uncapped players.
