Hi. My name is Tim Peake. Welcome on board the International Space

:00:50.:01:01.

Station. I am speaking to you from about 400 kilometres above the

:01:02.:01:06.

earth, just below me the southern hemisphere is still basking in rugby

:01:07.:01:10.

World Cup glory. He is over the line, he has touched down and the

:01:11.:01:14.

All Blacks are clear! New Zealand have won their third World Cup and

:01:15.:01:18.

they have thoroughly deserved a great victory. As for Europe...

:01:19.:01:22.

That's the worst thing I have seen on a rugby field for a very long

:01:23.:01:26.

time. There are bodies lying on the pitch. It's sickening. You feel you

:01:27.:01:30.

are never going to come back from it. After the darkness comes the

:01:31.:01:36.

light. A fresh start, new faces and hopes rekindled. Hartley has been

:01:37.:01:40.

named England Rugby Union captain ahead of the Six Nations. So, as a

:01:41.:01:47.

new day dawns, good luck to all the teams. A great finish! For the line

:01:48.:01:54.

and a try! And make this Six Nations out of this world.

:01:55.:02:04.

Well, sitting in his tin can far above the world planet earth is blue

:02:05.:02:12.

for Tim Peake as he looks down on a winter's day that promises an

:02:13.:02:14.

enthralling start to this year's championships. For all the home

:02:15.:02:17.

nations the World Cup is so last year. The future starts today in

:02:18.:02:22.

France and Scotland, new coaches, new players, new hopes, new dreams.

:02:23.:02:26.

Same magical competition which begins for real in 50 minutes or so

:02:27.:02:30.

with a hugely symbolic match for the people of France with the first

:02:31.:02:33.

international at the Stade de France since the terrorist outrage. The

:02:34.:02:38.

match with Italy kicks off at 2. 25pm. Ireland and Wales completes

:02:39.:02:42.

the opening weekend in Glyn tomorrow.

:02:43.:02:47.

We have -- in Dublin tomorrow. Our new spaceship on theouts skirts

:02:48.:02:50.

the pitch to give us a fantastic the pitch to give us a fantastic

:02:51.:02:54.

view out of the playing arena and the pitch to give us a fantastic

:02:55.:03:02.

are Jeremy Guscott and Mike Tindall. Over the years the Six Nations after

:03:03.:03:05.

a World Cup can be after the Lord mayors show but there is a sense of

:03:06.:03:09.

excitement about what happens over the six weeks. There is, I think,

:03:10.:03:13.

because of what happened in the last weekend of 2015. It was

:03:14.:03:18.

because of what happened in the last extraordinary, fantastic rugby. So

:03:19.:03:21.

the anticipation, the expectation is for that to continue and we have

:03:22.:03:25.

some great games to look forward to over the next five weekends. And

:03:26.:03:28.

great confrontations to look forward to but the World Cup, it excited

:03:29.:03:31.

people because it was enterprising and so open. Realistically, what can

:03:32.:03:36.

we expect on the field of play do you think from this championship? I

:03:37.:03:39.

think you hope that it continues in that way. World Cups are normally

:03:40.:03:44.

built on defence. This time it was built on people attacking. Argentina

:03:45.:03:47.

leading the way with that, and Japan leading the way with that. You hope

:03:48.:03:51.

people, especially someone like Italy, looks at that, it's Jacques

:03:52.:03:55.

Brunel's last Six Nations, he goes right, we have to go out there and

:03:56.:03:58.

prove a point. Let's go and enjoy ourselves. Let's go show what we can

:03:59.:04:04.

go do as athletes and hopefully you will see that with rugby all the way

:04:05.:04:09.

through. All the teams seem to be approaching in different ways.

:04:10.:04:11.

England almost rewriting it out of history. How much is Scotland using

:04:12.:04:14.

the World Cup as a positive to build for the future? Very much so. This

:04:15.:04:19.

time last year obviously Scotland were whitewashed in the Six Nations

:04:20.:04:23.

and the World Cup, there was a step forward in lots of ways. They looked

:04:24.:04:28.

like they were a comfortable squad, an experienced squad now. They're

:04:29.:04:31.

taking that, how close they were to get to the semifinals, a real

:04:32.:04:34.

positive and they're desperate to get into the next game which is

:04:35.:04:38.

obviously here later on. We will start with our preview of what the

:04:39.:04:41.

home nations can expect with England. Obviously it's a new

:04:42.:04:45.

England now. The regime seems to have changed out of all recognition

:04:46.:04:49.

since the team took the field in the World Cup three months or so ago.

:04:50.:04:54.

The Lancaster regime is gone, replaced by a smiling uncompromising

:04:55.:05:02.

Australian. One of the dreams of an

:05:03.:05:05.

international coach is to win a World Cup. If you look at the

:05:06.:05:08.

countries who are capable of winning the World Cup, England's one of

:05:09.:05:13.

those countries. Given the performance at the last World Cup

:05:14.:05:17.

was disappointing, when the offer came through it was an offer I

:05:18.:05:22.

couldn't refuse. What a great opportunity to take a nation that's

:05:23.:05:27.

domesticicly strong, has depth of players, that's not doing well at

:05:28.:05:30.

the moment and try to take them up the ladder. How surprised have you

:05:31.:05:34.

been about the interest in you? Well, not so much about me, but

:05:35.:05:39.

about English rugby. There's this love for English rugby here. At the

:05:40.:05:43.

same time, you can feel there's so many people are hoping it fails.

:05:44.:05:46.

There is a great attention on the English rugby team. It's fantastic.

:05:47.:05:51.

Do you think English rugby has lost a sense of identity? You don't know

:05:52.:05:55.

really what you get with England any more? Graham Henry said after the

:05:56.:05:59.

World Cup and I thought it was a relevant comment, he said it looked

:06:00.:06:02.

like England were trying to copy New Zealand's style. England doesn't

:06:03.:06:05.

need to copy anyone's style. It needs to develop its own style. What

:06:06.:06:10.

does that mean? That means finding a way. Finding a way, if you have to

:06:11.:06:16.

maul them to death, scrum them, we can outphase them. We have to

:06:17.:06:20.

outkick them. If you look since 2004 the record in the Six Nations hasn't

:06:21.:06:25.

been great in winning trophies. Maybe there's been a few short cuts

:06:26.:06:29.

taken since then. Maybe the work hasn't been done to develop players

:06:30.:06:34.

as much as it should have. To win trophies you need world-class

:06:35.:06:38.

players. You look at Ireland, how many world-class players they've

:06:39.:06:41.

had. Wales. Do England have world-class players now? Potentially

:06:42.:06:46.

they do. No one at the moment would get into a world 15. Our aim is to

:06:47.:06:53.

dominate if a Lions team is picked we want to see at least 50% of those

:06:54.:06:57.

full of Englishmen. Is the talent there? It's definitely there. It

:06:58.:07:04.

needs to be maximised. Firstly it's about the mindset of wanting to be a

:07:05.:07:07.

top test star, understand the sacrifice it is costs. You have to

:07:08.:07:11.

sacrifice, if you want to be a great team you have to sacrifice. What's

:07:12.:07:15.

team unity like? One of the things I deliberately tried to do is get

:07:16.:07:18.

cohesion, so we have had a couple of nights out together and in smaller

:07:19.:07:21.

groups, just to get the guys to enjoy each other. They've been

:07:22.:07:26.

allowed out for a beer? It's not banned? No, we work hard. I want the

:07:27.:07:31.

players to work hard on the field. And off the field they've got to be

:07:32.:07:34.

sensible and got to be professional and jn stand they have

:07:35.:07:37.

responsibilities in English rugby player but there is no harm a guy

:07:38.:07:42.

going out and having dinner and and a couple of pints. There is nothing

:07:43.:07:46.

wrong with that as long as it's a couple and not ten, 15. Can you be

:07:47.:07:52.

the vaviour of English rugby? -- saviour? I don't know but at the end

:07:53.:07:56.

of the four years we will have a strong English team.

:07:57.:07:59.

Sglp We will be replaying that quote I am sure a lot over the next four

:08:00.:08:05.

years. I want to say Sonia and dill Lynne

:08:06.:08:08.

Hartley, that's riveting television we will show you later on. You

:08:09.:08:16.

played against Eddie Jones? I did back in 88, it was a fantastic side,

:08:17.:08:21.

they pumped us in Sydney, it was a thrashing we got that day. What do

:08:22.:08:25.

you make of the overemphasis about going out for a beer and this kind

:08:26.:08:31.

of thing, is it important the cliche of bonding? As long a point it might

:08:32.:08:35.

be, I think it does make a big difference. When you are in a

:08:36.:08:39.

relaxed atmosphere you are having a couple of beers, obviously the right

:08:40.:08:44.

person to ask me! You just get to know people on a different level. If

:08:45.:08:49.

you are in an environment it is high pressure at elite sport. It is - you

:08:50.:08:52.

are always thinking what you have to do on the field. To be able to sort

:08:53.:08:56.

of sit down and go out for dinner, have drinks with the lads, actually

:08:57.:09:00.

bond on a different level where you are not talking rugby, it does make

:09:01.:09:03.

those small differences and I think it will benefit the squad. Obviously

:09:04.:09:09.

from Jerry and Mike's point of view there is a vested interest in how

:09:10.:09:15.

England do. Do you look at the Eddie Jones regime in revolutionary terms

:09:16.:09:20.

or evolutionary? It's not been revolutionary, because look at the

:09:21.:09:27.

side for the first game. It would have seen new caps and Clifford

:09:28.:09:29.

maybe. So that might happen next week. It might still happen, that

:09:30.:09:33.

revolution might come. But it is just an evolution at the moment. He

:09:34.:09:37.

has played a blinder so far in his press conferences but that's what he

:09:38.:09:40.

does. His sound bites are brilliant. Now we need to see the substance.

:09:41.:09:45.

Whether they've had the time to really see that, he has had two

:09:46.:09:48.

weeks with them, I think we will see that coming through the Six Nations

:09:49.:09:52.

and beyond. I think it's all about the attitude. He has picked a side

:09:53.:09:56.

with a real bite and attitude and that's saying something about his

:09:57.:10:00.

regime. He strikes me as a no-nonsense guy. We heard about

:10:01.:10:03.

Stuart Lancaster with the one on ones and they were long in

:10:04.:10:09.

conversation. Eddie Jones is straight to the point, I think. He

:10:10.:10:13.

won't hang around, they'll get one or two opportunities, after that he

:10:14.:10:16.

will settle on a team. Is it a four-year project and does it matter

:10:17.:10:18.

what happens in the intervening period or because of the way the

:10:19.:10:23.

media is so intrusive and the all-seeing eye, has he got to win

:10:24.:10:29.

games on the way, as well? 100%. He has a four-year contract. If England

:10:30.:10:34.

don't win, the pressure comes on. That's when we will see another side

:10:35.:10:38.

of Eddie Jones. Wales, interestingly on the last three World Cups, the

:10:39.:10:42.

following season there's been a Grand Slam victory for France in

:10:43.:10:47.

2004 and Wales in 2008 and 2012. Somebody who was at the heart of

:10:48.:10:52.

those triumphs and right at the core of the Welsh team still is Alan Wyn

:10:53.:11:00.

Jones. Ten years since you made your debut

:11:01.:11:06.

almost. Yeah... Has time flown? Yeah, I know. I wish I was captain

:11:07.:11:11.

at 15. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I never thought I would be

:11:12.:11:16.

comfortable or feeling increasingly equipped to play the game. When you

:11:17.:11:19.

look back at the World Cup how do you think of it now, pride,

:11:20.:11:23.

frustration, what's the overriding feeling? I think we can be proud in

:11:24.:11:29.

the fact we were gracious in all we had and we kept going and young guys

:11:30.:11:33.

came in and had an opportunity and put their hands up. To a point we

:11:34.:11:37.

probably had more development in the space of the few months than

:11:38.:11:42.

probably get in a few years. It's a massive thing. Ultimately a couple

:11:43.:11:49.

of games go a different way at certain times and we are talking

:11:50.:11:53.

semifinal and beyond. But it's all behindsight now, we have to move

:11:54.:11:56.

forward. Is the Six Nations different in a World Cup year,

:11:57.:12:00.

especially a year when you were in the same pool as England? Yeah, but

:12:01.:12:05.

not for the reason that we played them once already in a World Cup,

:12:06.:12:10.

everyone's going to have an element of disarray going into it with a lot

:12:11.:12:15.

of change in squads. There's probably some teams that feel

:12:16.:12:18.

they're a bit skinny in certain areas because of injuries, etc. It's

:12:19.:12:22.

going to be interesting to see where everything lines up because of the

:12:23.:12:25.

playing load between the World Cup and the start of the Six Nations.

:12:26.:12:30.

Start out in Dublin T will be a different one for you, no Paul oh

:12:31.:12:39.

conto keep an eye on. -- O Connell. There is Toner to step probably to

:12:40.:12:42.

the fore in their lineout. A few other guys coming into play

:12:43.:12:46.

alongside him, as well. Generally, you are at ease with yourself at the

:12:47.:12:52.

moment and with the rugby life? Yeah, I think so. No element of

:12:53.:12:59.

complainency at all, but I think an element of confidence and

:13:00.:13:02.

realisation where I am and what I am doing, what I can do. That gives you

:13:03.:13:08.

confidence to be happy and enjoy and make the most of where you are and

:13:09.:13:11.

what you are doing. Fatherhood, as well. You have a little daughter

:13:12.:13:16.

now. Is that putting rugby in perspective, as well? Yeah, very

:13:17.:13:22.

much so. I don't want to be harping on like I am the first guy playing

:13:23.:13:27.

rugby that's had a kid. Yeah, I am very conscious of I have been in a

:13:28.:13:30.

privileged position to play rugby and I feel even more so now that I

:13:31.:13:34.

am able to play rugby and have a family life, as well. And make the

:13:35.:13:39.

most of that and have a child is the best distraction from what can be

:13:40.:13:43.

like I say a privileged position but also quite intense at times. Keep on

:13:44.:13:48.

smiling, keep enjoying it. Yeah, I can't smile too much!

:13:49.:13:51.

I am not allowed, apparently. Gareth Charles asking the questions

:13:52.:14:02.

there. Listening to that in Paris was Jonathan Davies. Afternoon to

:14:03.:14:09.

you. Afternoon, John. Minor delay on the line. Alan, it feels like

:14:10.:14:13.

you. Afternoon, John. Minor delay on been there forever but he is still a

:14:14.:14:16.

cornerstone of the side, isn't he? Yeah,

:14:17.:14:21.

cornerstone of the side, isn't he? the Welsh set-up. I think he has

:14:22.:14:25.

this aura about him, even just his presence inspires other players. He

:14:26.:14:29.

does his work and in the set-piece but this year he has picked his game

:14:30.:14:33.

up again and carries the ball a lot and he has been very important for

:14:34.:14:37.

the Ospreys and he will be very, very important for Wales. If the

:14:38.:14:41.

Welsh pack is pretty reliable, what do you make about the back division?

:14:42.:14:45.

The book-makers have the Welsh team as a whole favourites and

:14:46.:14:47.

convincingly favourites to score the most tries. Do you see that

:14:48.:14:54.

potential in their back line? I am surprised by that because I can see

:14:55.:15:01.

the potential there. But the systems they play, they don't score many

:15:02.:15:04.

tries and didn't score many in the World Cup and that was their

:15:05.:15:08.

downfall really. We harped on about 15 against 13 against Australia.

:15:09.:15:12.

They should have scored. Now I think I interviewed Rob Howley a couple of

:15:13.:15:16.

weeks ago and they want to express themselves and play in wider

:15:17.:15:23.

channels, maybe that's the reasons they picked Anscombe to get the ball

:15:24.:15:28.

out to wider channels. It will be interesting to see how they go and

:15:29.:15:32.

there's boys back from injury which missed the World Cup. They have the

:15:33.:15:35.

potential there but they've got to try and unlock it. OK, thank you

:15:36.:15:40.

very much. Jonathan is with our team in Paris.

:15:41.:15:45.

France and Italy to kick off this year's RBS Six Nations. England and

:15:46.:15:49.

Wales now. Let's move on to Scotland. Actually when you look

:15:50.:15:56.

Wales now. Let's move on to between 2011 and 15 they won three

:15:57.:15:59.

out of 20 matches in the Six Nations. But they won just as many

:16:00.:16:01.

games in the World Cup last autumn and that really is

:16:02.:16:06.

games in the World Cup last autumn optimism, not least for their

:16:07.:16:06.

captain. We need to take positives away from

:16:07.:16:19.

the tournament and the game, I thought we played fantastically well

:16:20.:16:22.

and if we concentrated more at times in the game I think we would have

:16:23.:16:26.

won the game. The final whistle goes. Joubert runs off the pitch.

:16:27.:16:31.

That's the worst thing I have seen on a rugby field for a long time. He

:16:32.:16:35.

is not prepared to face up to the players. That's not rugby. It was

:16:36.:16:38.

all surreal. It happened so quickly. We put so much effort into the game

:16:39.:16:42.

and to lose like that was heart-breaking for everyone

:16:43.:16:44.

concerned, from a Scottish perspective, we are always looking

:16:45.:16:48.

at improving. I feel we done that in the tournament and we have to do

:16:49.:16:52.

that in an extremely tough Six Nations. How do you turn that raw

:16:53.:16:55.

emotion into something positive going forward? We have to understand

:16:56.:16:58.

why we have a good performance like that and take some of the emotion

:16:59.:17:03.

away from playing in the game and simply focus on skills set and

:17:04.:17:06.

concentration has been a big thing for us and that's what we are

:17:07.:17:09.

thinking about in training, sometimes we feel as though we lack

:17:10.:17:12.

concentration for the full 80 minutes. Out there in the middle

:17:13.:17:16.

nobody can relax for any amount of time at all.

:17:17.:17:33.

Scotland have had poor starts to the Six Nations championships, I think

:17:34.:17:40.

they've won one match in 16 years since it started. Why do you think

:17:41.:17:44.

that is? It's clearly not a good start in the tournament, it's based

:17:45.:17:50.

on momentum. You need to start well. There lies the secret of probably

:17:51.:17:54.

why we haven't done well in the tournament. Been caught cold in the

:17:55.:17:57.

preparation in the week leading up to it, it's short and in the past we

:17:58.:18:02.

have maybe just been undercooked and unsure and how we like to play. That

:18:03.:18:07.

is our message to the coaches this time around, let's concentrate on

:18:08.:18:11.

all the things we feel as players we need to concentrate on. I think we

:18:12.:18:14.

have a good balance this time around. The proof will be in the

:18:15.:18:17.

pudding. 12 years ago was the last time that Scotland actually scored a

:18:18.:18:22.

try against England. At Murrayfield. When you hear a stat like that how

:18:23.:18:26.

does it make you feel? It's an incredible stat, never knew that.

:18:27.:18:30.

That's baffling really. We need to - it's incredible. Cheer we want to

:18:31.:18:34.

change that this weekend and will be everything in our powers to do that.

:18:35.:18:39.

The shape we play with allows us to express ourselves and get dangerous

:18:40.:18:42.

players with hands on the ball and if we do that, we should be able to

:18:43.:18:45.

score some tries. Scotland hasn't beaten England for eight years. How

:18:46.:18:48.

big a gap do you think it All I can say is once we get out

:18:49.:19:04.

there we will give everything for each other and for the shirt and

:19:05.:19:07.

hopefully come away with the right result.

:19:08.:19:15.

All those statistics don't make good reading, do they? They've guaranteed

:19:16.:19:18.

is we are definitely losing this game! To remind the captain that all

:19:19.:19:22.

these stats, you have never beaten them. We are in trouble now. It

:19:23.:19:29.

doesn't make pleasant reading for listening for any Scottish fan.

:19:30.:19:34.

That's been symptomatic of Scotland's performance. You lose the

:19:35.:19:37.

first game and you are going into the second without confidence,

:19:38.:19:39.

probably doubting selection. Momentum is the word you hear all

:19:40.:19:42.

the time but it's so true. Scotland have only once had that first

:19:43.:19:46.

victory. What is the optimism that is palpable when you talk to people

:19:47.:19:51.

over the last 24 hours in Edinburgh, what is that based on? I think it's

:19:52.:19:55.

based on a squad now, it is a squad, it's not a first 15, there is

:19:56.:19:58.

strength and depth there, it's a squad, Glasgow won the Pro 12 last

:19:59.:20:03.

year. A lot of these players know they're at least a match for the

:20:04.:20:06.

likes of Irish players and Welsh players. A lot are playing in

:20:07.:20:10.

England now and France. They know that they're a match for this level.

:20:11.:20:14.

So, it's a settled side now. These guys have been together for a while.

:20:15.:20:19.

Vern Cotter has had them now for a period of time. You can really see

:20:20.:20:23.

they're beginning to jel. I thought the World Cup they were a tight

:20:24.:20:29.

group together. My optimism would be based, if I was Scottish, on the

:20:30.:20:34.

tight-head for Scotland. The scrum has never been particularly strong

:20:35.:20:38.

and in Laidlaw you have the best kicker in the wo world. If they get

:20:39.:20:41.

territory they'll kick penalties and get the score board ticking over.

:20:42.:20:47.

OK. On to Ireland then. They start tomorrow against Wales. Looking for

:20:48.:20:53.

a third consecutive championship. In many ways you could say their team

:20:54.:21:01.

is in tatters. It's a good job their coach Joe Schmidt is nothing, if not

:21:02.:21:10.

a realist. Joe, you are potentially on the

:21:11.:21:17.

verge of something very special, it will be three in a row if you win,

:21:18.:21:21.

does that add extra pressure? Not really, as you said potentially. We

:21:22.:21:25.

have to start over and try to win the trophy back by working our way

:21:26.:21:28.

through one game at a time and the problem is the trophy can be gone

:21:29.:21:32.

after one game. You are playing at home first up against such a good

:21:33.:21:36.

side that we can be scrambling to get some sort of decent placement

:21:37.:21:42.

after round one. One of the accusations post-World

:21:43.:21:46.

Cup has been levelled at all the northern hemisphere sides is that we

:21:47.:21:51.

are not attack-minded enough. Again, there is a degree of frustration in

:21:52.:21:54.

that. Per match we kicked exactly the same number of times as the All

:21:55.:21:59.

Blacks. We made more passes than any other team per match in the World

:22:00.:22:03.

Cup. Last time we played Wales we kicked 11 times in general play.

:22:04.:22:07.

Wales kicked 22 times. Does that sound like we are not playing the

:22:08.:22:10.

game? At the same time, we live and die by our results and the results

:22:11.:22:15.

said that the four southern hemisphere teams were superior. I

:22:16.:22:17.

don't think there is a massive difference in the way the game is

:22:18.:22:24.

played. The captain scores within four minutes. You have already had

:22:25.:22:30.

to cope with the departure of Brian O'Driscoll and now the other titan

:22:31.:22:35.

of Irish rugby, Paul O Connell is gone. You don't fill Paul's shoes

:22:36.:22:40.

with one man. Rory Best comes in as captain and he was already a leader

:22:41.:22:43.

within the group. I don't think that he is going to change too much about

:22:44.:22:47.

what he does. He is going to lead from the front. There's a number of

:22:48.:22:52.

other guys who will have to step up because one of the things about

:22:53.:22:56.

Paul's leadershipedship was multi-facetted, it was his attention

:22:57.:22:58.

to detail and preparation and the way he carried himself off the

:22:59.:23:02.

pitch. To make sure that we are ticking all those boxes and

:23:03.:23:05.

replacing him is going to be a task that's going to be shared amongst a

:23:06.:23:10.

group of players, I think. Plenty of leaders left in that squad

:23:11.:23:20.

but you are also missing the likes of Bop Henderson and O Mahoney. I

:23:21.:23:27.

don't think you can be superconfident. The competition is

:23:28.:23:32.

so tight. We won with a points differentential of ten and five,

:23:33.:23:36.

even that appears to be going on the wrong trajectory, from that

:23:37.:23:38.

perspective we are never confident about anything other than trying to

:23:39.:23:44.

get the best preparation we can and then trying to dove-tail that into a

:23:45.:23:50.

really good performance. Let's go back to Paris and talk to

:23:51.:23:54.

Keith Wood about what the next few weeks might hold in store for the

:23:55.:23:58.

Irish S this a turning point do you think for the international team? I

:23:59.:24:02.

think it's a huge turning point. A lot of the big guys are gone, Brian

:24:03.:24:07.

O'Driscoll, Paul, definitely gone. There is injuries. There is more

:24:08.:24:12.

pressure on the coach. The provinces aren't doing well. You wouldn't

:24:13.:24:16.

believe how low the rugby fraternity is at the moment. They're upset and

:24:17.:24:19.

a little bit worried about the whole idea of how Ireland are going to do

:24:20.:24:24.

in in this Six Nations. Can you offer any positives in terms of new

:24:25.:24:30.

names people can look for and say is the next generation? Well, I think

:24:31.:24:36.

there is a next generation. We saw glimpses during the World Cup of

:24:37.:24:43.

Robbie Henshaw, Ian Henderson unfortunately is injured. Gary

:24:44.:24:48.

hasn't made the squad, which is disturbing but I think that Joe

:24:49.:24:52.

Schmidt has gone back to try to do something very simple and do it

:24:53.:24:55.

very, very well for the opening game against Wales. The weather fraction

:24:56.:24:59.

tomorrow is supposed to be terrible. -- weather forecast. They want to

:25:00.:25:04.

get through the game and get a momentum going, that's all they're

:25:05.:25:06.

looking for. Thank you. Great scarf, by the way!

:25:07.:25:15.

Moving on from that. Joe Schmidt, we keep all the

:25:16.:25:18.

interviews we hear with all the coaches and it strikes you there is

:25:19.:25:21.

not a single home nations coach in the entire championship for the

:25:22.:25:24.

first time ever, does that that matter? We have every nation has to

:25:25.:25:28.

go for the best. There were seven kiwi coaches I think coaching sides

:25:29.:25:33.

in the rugby World Cup recently. We have got three in the home unions

:25:34.:25:38.

and in the competition. Look, they're doing a good job. As long as

:25:39.:25:41.

they're doing a good job they will remain. If you have one wish for

:25:42.:25:46.

this championship over the course of the next seven weeks, because this

:25:47.:25:49.

is the shop window for Rugby Union effectively, every year for the next

:25:50.:25:53.

four years this will be the most watched event in the world and

:25:54.:25:57.

domesticicly, what do you hope we will

:25:58.:26:04.

domesticicly, what do you hope we is a Stuart Lancaster side. Why are

:26:05.:26:06.

we still not playing the seven? We just switched a few around. We need

:26:07.:26:12.

to get to where Scotland are consistency in the squad,

:26:13.:26:15.

consistency in the selection which we didn't have through the World Cup

:26:16.:26:18.

which really backfired on us. Hopefully we can come away from

:26:19.:26:20.

which really backfired on us. and France, I would like

:26:21.:26:24.

which really backfired on us. France go out there and show world

:26:25.:26:25.

which really backfired on us. rugby what they can still do and

:26:26.:26:31.

hopefully they can. The World Cup was a massive wake-up call for the

:26:32.:26:35.

northern hemisphere. The southern hemisphere dominated. What impressed

:26:36.:26:40.

me, Argentina have completely changed their mindset and the way

:26:41.:26:43.

they play in the last three or four years. I would love to see the start

:26:44.:26:48.

of that happening with the northern hemisphere teams. Italy, Scotland

:26:49.:26:53.

are trying that. All the taements, Ireland, Wales and England, as well,

:26:54.:26:55.

really trying to play the great rugby we saw on the last weekend

:26:56.:27:02.

last year. Last season we were spoiled with a tremendous game. The

:27:03.:27:09.

last weekend was phenomenal. If that can be the benchmark that we will

:27:10.:27:14.

watch I will be very pleased. That last weekend, 221 points, 26 tries,

:27:15.:27:18.

it was one crazy but unforgettable day.

:27:19.:27:23.

Settle down, buckle up, calculators at the ready. What a day we have in

:27:24.:27:31.

prospect for you. George North for the line! Wales are flying here:

:27:32.:27:39.

George North second-half hat trick. England and Ireland are possibly

:27:40.:27:42.

watching this in despair. Perfect start for Ireland. The chase is on.

:27:43.:27:48.

The points continue to tick up. Ireland now in pole position. This

:27:49.:27:55.

title may be theirs. The final match England must win by 26 points. What

:27:56.:28:00.

a start! France have scored. England are rocking at the moment. It's an

:28:01.:28:04.

extraordinary game and an extraordinary day. One converted try

:28:05.:28:08.

and England are the Six Nations champions. Enough is enough. That's

:28:09.:28:19.

it. The title is going to Ireland. Welcome to Paris and two nations who

:28:20.:28:23.

had, frankly, miserable World Cups, Italy didn't make it out of the

:28:24.:28:27.

group stages and France probably wish they hadn't. A drubbing at the

:28:28.:28:31.

hands of New Zealand. But there is a new French coach and captain and

:28:32.:28:34.

four players making their debut today. Four new players in the lit

:28:35.:28:39.

team, as well. Although there is at least one familiar face -- Italy

:28:40.:28:46.

team. A return from injury with their captain. As you would expect

:28:47.:28:49.

security here is high. This is the first match here since the terrorist

:28:50.:28:53.

attacks of November. The first coming together in French sport

:28:54.:28:55.

since November. What impact that will have on the atmosphere here

:28:56.:29:01.

today, we will find out very soon. It is the first match of the 2016

:29:02.:29:06.

RBS Six Nations and we have a panel to watch. Keith Wood, and a man

:29:07.:29:09.

enjoying his own French love affair. It's a warm welcome to Matt.

:29:10.:29:47.

Normally we are shivering here but it's about 14 degroos, you have

:29:48.:29:50.

brought the spring with you here today. I am used to the nice weather

:29:51.:29:55.

here in France. In Toulon it's beautiful. You are going to see a

:29:56.:29:59.

great game of rugby. It's great conditions. You played three of the

:30:00.:30:06.

Six Nations sides in the World Cup for Australia. You saw those sides

:30:07.:30:07.

up close. Who impressed you most? Scotland were the big improvers,

:30:08.:30:16.

well coached and well drilled and they have a good sense of how they

:30:17.:30:21.

want to play. We have just about forgiven you for that Scotland game,

:30:22.:30:25.

by the way. How will they close the gap, the Northern Hemisphere sides?

:30:26.:30:30.

It was so disappointing in a home World Cup, the Northern Hemisphere

:30:31.:30:33.

sides should have been more acclimatised and not making it into

:30:34.:30:36.

the semifinals, where must they step up in the next four years? The World

:30:37.:30:41.

Cup is such fine margins, if you look at the games we won they were

:30:42.:30:45.

close games and there is not a huge difference, or a huge amount they

:30:46.:30:50.

need to make up. I just think the fine margins, working for each other

:30:51.:30:54.

and being more committed to the cause as a team that will take them

:30:55.:30:58.

a long way. Commitment and working to the cause, things that France

:30:59.:31:02.

need to get their heads around. Are you pretty much at rock bottom?

:31:03.:31:05.

Terrible World Cup, Six Nations you've not been in the top three for

:31:06.:31:12.

the last four seasons, is this as bad as it will get. It was

:31:13.:31:15.

difference in the quarterfinal against New Zealand for France will

:31:16.:31:19.

stop it is hard to get worse. We have new staff and players and we

:31:20.:31:22.

had a lack of leadership in the World Cup and now we are going to

:31:23.:31:25.

start with fresh new players. We need to forget the past and think

:31:26.:31:28.

about the future and winning the Six Nations would be a good start for

:31:29.:31:34.

Guy Noves and his staff. We will hear from Guy Noves and what he

:31:35.:31:39.

brings shortly. 62 years old yesterday and maybe his time as

:31:40.:31:42.

national coach should have been a couple of cycles ago. Is he the

:31:43.:31:47.

right person? He's one of the most charismatic guys I have met in my

:31:48.:31:52.

life, a guy of few words. Just by watching him you know he understands

:31:53.:31:56.

what he must do and he's been so successful with Toulouse but

:31:57.:31:58.

managing a national team is different from managing a team you

:31:59.:32:01.

know every day because you don't have the players all the time. It

:32:02.:32:06.

will be different. Will he find the right attitude to do it? We will

:32:07.:32:10.

see. That is pertinent because Italy's next coach might experience

:32:11.:32:15.

that as well if the rumours are to be believed, it will be Conor O'Shea

:32:16.:32:18.

who will take over Italy at the end of the Six Nations. A potentially

:32:19.:32:23.

interesting appointment, compared in football terms to Pep Guardiola to

:32:24.:32:28.

Man City, it is all but done. All but done apparently, and we know it

:32:29.:32:32.

is a rumour. There does seem to be some basis behind it. Conor O'Shea

:32:33.:32:35.

has plotted his way through his whole rugby career, as a player when

:32:36.:32:40.

he stepped away from saying he went straight into Administration with

:32:41.:32:44.

the England RFU, a huge amount of steps on the ladder and then he goes

:32:45.:32:48.

for director of rugby and has done incredibly well, he knew there were

:32:49.:32:51.

good new players coming through in the Harlequins Academy and the same

:32:52.:32:55.

is apparently true in Italy. He picks his jobs well so if it turns

:32:56.:32:58.

out to be true he knows something good is ahead for Italy. I just hope

:32:59.:33:02.

he will get the same wages as Guardiola!

:33:03.:33:05.

LAUGHTER Yeah, maybe the weekly wage of

:33:06.:33:09.

Guardiola over the whole duration of his contract! We will see. Conor

:33:10.:33:13.

O'Shea is not in charge of Italy today, it is Jacques Brunel, we will

:33:14.:33:18.

talk more about Italy and Eddie Jones in a moment. You know him

:33:19.:33:23.

well, he plucked you out of club rugby and made you the international

:33:24.:33:26.

star that you became so you know all about his style. First we can get

:33:27.:33:30.

the thoughts of Jonathan Davies who is on the touchline with Lee

:33:31.:33:34.

McKenzie. We have two sides desperate to right

:33:35.:33:37.

the wrongs after a poor World Cup, a new chapter for French rugby, what

:33:38.:33:41.

do you make of this side? It is exciting and Guy Noves has set about

:33:42.:33:46.

getting the basics right going forward and going wide, but he has

:33:47.:33:50.

left out Bastareaud, which shows what he wants to do. It is an

:33:51.:33:55.

exciting backline. It is a very optimistic atmosphere. They have a

:33:56.:34:01.

DJ going, the place is rocking, and if they start well and confidence

:34:02.:34:05.

comes back quickly it could be a long afternoon for the Italians.

:34:06.:34:09.

I know you are obviously a proud Welshman, but how important is it to

:34:10.:34:13.

have a strong, flamboyant France back in the Six Nations? May be the

:34:14.:34:17.

type of France that gave you a couple of sleepless nights when you

:34:18.:34:21.

played in Paris. There is a name on the team sheet, Bonneval, and his

:34:22.:34:24.

father played against us and the first thing we did in the morning

:34:25.:34:28.

playing in Paris was opening the curtains and hoping it would rain.

:34:29.:34:33.

It is a lovely day for them to play. They played a fantastic brand of

:34:34.:34:37.

rugby and we need to see that back, a strong France and a strong

:34:38.:34:41.

Scotland. If everyone is strong it is a strong and vibrant competition.

:34:42.:34:45.

Even the Italians need to up their game a little bit. I think this year

:34:46.:34:49.

is going to be exciting with hopefully a very strong France.

:34:50.:34:53.

Thanks, Jonathan. It will all come from the top, from

:34:54.:34:58.

Guy Noves, 62 years old yesterday, and what a CV he possesses in

:34:59.:35:03.

domestic French rugby, winning big French title ten times and the

:35:04.:35:07.

Heineken Cup four times, compared to the Sir Alex Ferguson of club rugby

:35:08.:35:10.

and he must bring that domestic success to the international stage.

:35:11.:35:15.

Where is French rugby, which French team will turn up? They are

:35:16.:35:21.

gloriously unpredictable. We've been saying that since time immemorial.

:35:22.:35:24.

He's picked a new squad, they have got to gel and it doesn't happen

:35:25.:35:26.

overnight. If he can summon up that invincible

:35:27.:35:47.

air he created at Toulouse France will become a difficult proposition.

:35:48.:37:16.

Guy Noves, coaching Toulouse. A trophy laden CV at domestic level,

:37:17.:37:24.

but this international stage is trophy laden CV at domestic level,

:37:25.:37:30.

have said, there is slight in difference in the French press to

:37:31.:37:34.

his appointment, that maybe his time was a while ago, he is not a fan of

:37:35.:37:39.

the laptop or technology. Yes, but he picked a squad to help him and he

:37:40.:37:44.

kept Yannick Carew who was in the squad previously but he moved from a

:37:45.:37:48.

coach to be a manager and he's 30 rings epic back into the French team

:37:49.:37:51.

and the French players respect him, they call him Monsieur which is

:37:52.:38:01.

important. It will change the attitude of the players. There is an

:38:02.:38:06.

awful lot to do with the culture and philosophy. If he's going to go in

:38:07.:38:09.

and show them how to parse and break a tackle, that is the coach's job.

:38:10.:38:15.

His job is to try and get them back and play like the French teams of

:38:16.:38:19.

old. -- pass. When we came in here today there is a bit of sun in the

:38:20.:38:23.

air, it is lovely and fresh and these are the days that would

:38:24.:38:26.

frighten the life out of you 20 years ago but for the last five

:38:27.:38:29.

years they haven't and you know that if you can ride through the heavy,

:38:30.:38:33.

hard work you can get a result in the end. Italy will be terrified

:38:34.:38:38.

today. It is a perennial problem over the last few years, no top

:38:39.:38:41.

three finish in the last four seasons, so why the step up from the

:38:42.:38:45.

brilliant club rugby that we see at both European and domestic level

:38:46.:38:49.

doesn't translate Wisma it does not translate but we have many

:38:50.:38:52.

foreigners in our championship. And Matt is one of the most gifted and

:38:53.:38:55.

one of the best signings in French rugby, but we don't manage to bring

:38:56.:39:02.

young players in. But there are no limits in the Guy Noves tells to the

:39:03.:39:06.

players but he'll was plays with strong backs and I Kantele the

:39:07.:39:11.

French back will one of the strongest. The flip side is those

:39:12.:39:14.

young players should be yearning from the likes of you and

:39:15.:39:19.

determination and hard work and spirit on the pitch into it domestic

:39:20.:39:24.

rugby. That is generally how it should work but that has been lost a

:39:25.:39:29.

little bit. From experience, the guys are not picked they will not

:39:30.:39:35.

train as hard. It is a case of changing the mindset, that's the

:39:36.:39:38.

challenge for the coach. He must get the guys can not teach them how to

:39:39.:39:41.

play because they are great players, but to buy into a message or a

:39:42.:39:45.

culture, or a way of how they want to play. If he gets them committing

:39:46.:39:48.

to that you will see a good team today. He has four new caps in the

:39:49.:39:53.

starting line-up, second row Jedrasiak is one of those, new caps

:39:54.:39:57.

and new blood, Jedrasiak is one of those, new caps

:39:58.:39:59.

and new blood, people you can influence and create and mould and

:40:00.:40:02.

in the backs he has three of those, Bakare tower on the wing and Danty

:40:03.:40:11.

and Beziers at scrum-half. Bakare tower is a risky choice for some

:40:12.:40:14.

people because he has not played for a couple of years and he doesn't

:40:15.:40:19.

have a club. He's a specialist. It was the game to make him play and

:40:20.:40:28.

he's played rugby sevens. Even if he doesn't have the habit is to play in

:40:29.:40:31.

rugby 15, his positioning and high balls, will he be good? But when he

:40:32.:40:35.

gets the ball he's going to be devastating. A lot of French teams

:40:36.:40:40.

in times past have taken a risk and they want some flamboyance and spark

:40:41.:40:44.

and they want magic and get the crowd standing on their feet and say

:40:45.:40:47.

can we want to follow this team but they haven't done that for the last

:40:48.:40:50.

three years, it has been bish and Bosch, this is the culture change.

:40:51.:40:55.

If you are the hooker at Toulon, not captain down there, he's the man Guy

:40:56.:41:00.

Noves has chosen to lead the team, Guirado, was that a surprise to you?

:41:01.:41:03.

Surprising he has not Guirado, was that a surprise to you?

:41:04.:41:08.

club level. He's the type of player that leads by example and he will do

:41:09.:41:12.

the hard work. He will not be the big speaker and front man that likes

:41:13.:41:16.

to take photos and be everywhere on Twitter, that he is the type of

:41:17.:41:18.

captain that will really lead from the front. Not too many hawkers have

:41:19.:41:26.

been hugely successful as captain is on the international stage. Dylan

:41:27.:41:28.

Hartley has to try and see if he can. Get back in your box, Gary! The

:41:29.:41:34.

front row is it great place to captain from because you are in the

:41:35.:41:37.

middle of the aggression and tackling and emotion and aggression

:41:38.:41:39.

but you have to rely on other players. There are lots of changes

:41:40.:41:43.

in the French team, who are the guys that will stand up and be the

:41:44.:41:46.

leaders to stand behind their captain and help the captain out?

:41:47.:41:51.

When he is stuck in the scrum he needs the nine and ten. They are

:41:52.:41:57.

very experienced, the nine and ten. Will the leaders emerge today? We

:41:58.:42:00.

will see. Let's see what Italy have against them. They had a poor World

:42:01.:42:07.

Cup with the opening loss to France and Ireland at the Olympic Stadium

:42:08.:42:10.

meaning they didn't make it out of the group. Lee McKenzie has been

:42:11.:42:14.

speaking to the former Italy second row. Carlo, there has been a raft of

:42:15.:42:21.

changes from the team we saw at the Rapi World Cup to the one we have

:42:22.:42:25.

today, some promoted to the national side and a lot through injury. How

:42:26.:42:30.

strong is this Italian team? I love the fact the youngsters have been

:42:31.:42:34.

given a chance. To have the opportunity to make your first test

:42:35.:42:39.

debut on the starting line-up as opposed to coming off the bench

:42:40.:42:42.

makes a massive difference to your mental state pre-match. Tell us

:42:43.:42:47.

about the front row, vastly inexperienced, brave decision to do

:42:48.:42:51.

it here in France but you have to do it sometime. You haven't read the

:42:52.:43:00.

voter and they have a massive task today because lots of Italy's play

:43:01.:43:06.

is based on solidity upfront. Ornel Gega must be protected by Andrea

:43:07.:43:15.

Lovotti. They have experience on the bench. If things go drastically

:43:16.:43:20.

wrong out there. You have the likes of Castrogiovanni you can call upon

:43:21.:43:23.

in the latter stages of the game to give you that experience and go

:43:24.:43:29.

forward again. He has a plan B in selecting youngsters to have a go

:43:30.:43:33.

from the beginning. I think that is wise because he knows he can call on

:43:34.:43:37.

his bench. We know that Italy have never won in Paris against France.

:43:38.:43:41.

What must they do if they are going to change that record? It is crucial

:43:42.:43:45.

they stick to the things they know and they do really well, good first

:43:46.:43:50.

phase ball from the scrum, good, solid, tight cohesive mauls and the

:43:51.:43:54.

go forward from the front and that should open the space is wide and

:43:55.:43:57.

give the backs more opportunities. I hope it goes well for you Carlos,

:43:58.:44:02.

thank you. It's interesting for Italy, the

:44:03.:44:07.

stats show how is Twitter? Is it all right? The stats show that in the

:44:08.:44:10.

last Six Nations in the as to 20 minutes they conceded nine tries,

:44:11.:44:15.

they have often been in the game with a quarter to go, what is it?

:44:16.:44:23.

Finish it not be a problem at that level. In many cases it has been the

:44:24.:44:28.

strength and depth of the bench. In the last 20 minutes the other teams

:44:29.:44:32.

up the level for the last 15 mess and occasionally drop their level.

:44:33.:44:37.

It used to be disciplined that let them down. They have their

:44:38.:44:40.

discipline under order but today it is unbelievably hard for them in the

:44:41.:44:44.

front five and they are going to get absolutely drilled. I'm laughing

:44:45.:44:48.

because we always talk about Guy Noves and Flash player and the

:44:49.:44:51.

beautiful astounding rugby his teams have always played, but it is always

:44:52.:44:56.

built on the pack burying the opposition, it has got to be really

:44:57.:45:02.

tough for these young guys. With Guy Noves because of the front five we

:45:03.:45:05.

had these guys who made the difference. He knows that even if

:45:06.:45:11.

you have to be flashy and creative that starts from the forwards. The

:45:12.:45:14.

experience today is in the French back. It is and in Italy there are

:45:15.:45:21.

certainly four new caps, they have ten players who were not in the

:45:22.:45:28.

squad for the World Cup. Paolo -- Carlo Canna, this is a huge step up

:45:29.:45:34.

for him. Yes it is, there are going to test him, and for the record that

:45:35.:45:42.

was Snapchat. Other social media is available! You want to start and be

:45:43.:45:48.

grown into the big games, especially an away game, against the crowd, it

:45:49.:45:51.

is a good test for him and he will know where he is at after this game.

:45:52.:45:56.

It is a gamble but you can't get experience like this without being

:45:57.:46:01.

on this stage. It is difficult in Italian domestic rugby, isn't it?

:46:02.:46:04.

You have to make the change at some stage. He has had great servants and

:46:05.:46:11.

the front row and the back line for Italy but they are gone, they are

:46:12.:46:15.

35, 36 years of age and you have to take the risk. Unfortunately spring

:46:16.:46:21.

in Paris is daunting, especially if we get this sense of occasion. We've

:46:22.:46:26.

covered a lot of games in the last few years here and there is a buzz

:46:27.:46:31.

we haven't heard for a while. The PA has about 45 levels! Body -- Odiete

:46:32.:46:41.

is playing at full-back and he's been setting the level that he plays

:46:42.:46:45.

at a light. That is another huge step up. If you look at Guy Noves,

:46:46.:46:50.

you will think he will send him high balls all day long. When he has the

:46:51.:46:56.

likes of Danty coming at him, he might struggle. He needs to be

:46:57.:47:00.

protected by the back rows. As I said the French team, there is lots

:47:01.:47:06.

of hunger after the World Cup and we have to show the world we are a much

:47:07.:47:10.

better team than we were. We had four years of bad rugby and didn't

:47:11.:47:14.

play well and we were humiliated by some of the teams so now it is time

:47:15.:47:17.

to show we are much better than that. We are moments away from

:47:18.:47:23.

kick-off at the Stade de France of the first match of the 2016 RBS Six

:47:24.:47:28.

Nations. The teams are in the tunnel. France want to show the

:47:29.:47:33.

world that they have rugby in them, they can play the kind of run be

:47:34.:47:36.

that used to light up the international stage a few years ago.

:47:37.:47:41.

Italy, though, are going to take their time and played some kind of

:47:42.:47:45.

psychological game. Waiting a few moments more, what is going on

:47:46.:47:51.

inside the changing room? They might want to show them nervous on the way

:47:52.:47:58.

out. Is those last stages before entering the field of play, the

:47:59.:48:02.

cauldron, the atmosphere out here is fairly spectacular at the moment.

:48:03.:48:06.

What is going on in there and how are the butterflies? It is very hard

:48:07.:48:10.

to hear anything with this loudspeaker here. What they are

:48:11.:48:14.

trying to do is get the message, whether kicking off or receiving you

:48:15.:48:18.

want to get your message of as a playmaker how you want to start the

:48:19.:48:23.

game and get clarity to go out at 100% because in your mind you are

:48:24.:48:26.

clear exactly how you will start the game. Just going back onto the

:48:27.:48:30.

atmosphere, yes, the Tannoy is loud and there is a lot of noise but

:48:31.:48:34.

there is a spark in the air that we have not seen here for a while.

:48:35.:48:39.

There is a level of expectation that may be some of what made France

:48:40.:48:44.

great before the mother little charisma to have an attack from

:48:45.:48:49.

anywhere, maybe it's back, and that is the expectation. We want to

:48:50.:48:58.

believe something has changed. This crowd will let the team know if it

:48:59.:49:01.

is going the right way very quickly and if they are not impressed by

:49:02.:49:07.

what they have seen. The first ten minutes, it will not be this easy.

:49:08.:49:15.

We have suffered as a country. The World Cup has been terrible for the

:49:16.:49:16.

French team. It is a good day to recover all of the enjoyment for the

:49:17.:49:23.

French crowd behind the French rugby team. The French crowd, 60,000 here,

:49:24.:49:29.

normally a capacity of 80,000, not a ticket was sold after the terrorist

:49:30.:49:32.

attacks in November. The crowd who have made it today are determined to

:49:33.:49:37.

make it count. There is a passion and a spark in the air

:49:38.:49:40.

make it count. There is a passion expectation that France are

:49:41.:49:41.

make it count. There is a passion turn things around from their woeful

:49:42.:49:45.

World Cup, their drubbing at the hands of New Zealand.

:49:46.:50:10.

Moments away will no doubt be staring

:50:11.:50:17.

Moments away France have to believe

:50:18.:50:17.

Moments away this trophy this season. You'll this

:50:18.:50:22.

was the team I watched as a child, this is why I wanted to play rugby,

:50:23.:50:28.

Aggers of the flowing ability, skills, scoring from the other end

:50:29.:50:32.

of the Earth if you had to and you can feel there is a hint of that

:50:33.:50:38.

coming back. I think the Six Nations need a French team that excites and

:50:39.:50:42.

doesn't just bludgeon. There is only one too long player in it, pushing

:50:43.:50:48.

away from what the club game is doing and just trying to go back to

:50:49.:50:50.

the spirit of what French rugby is all about. I can see and hear the

:50:51.:50:56.

positivity coming from you, you believe this is a turning point. I

:50:57.:51:00.

know that Guy believe this is a turning point. I

:51:01.:51:04.

mentality of the French team. I played under his management and I

:51:05.:51:09.

know he is on who has a big heart. Even when he was a coach he didn't

:51:10.:51:14.

really help the French team but he provided many players. We will

:51:15.:51:20.

shortly hear the anthems and after that your commentary team, Eddie

:51:21.:51:22.

Butler, Jonathan Davies and Carlo Del Fava.

:51:23.:51:59.

# Italy has woken, Bound Scipio's helmet

:52:00.:52:27.

# Let her bow down, # For God created her

:52:28.:52:38.

# The roar of those ferocious soldiers?

:52:39.:53:45.

# They're coming right into your arms

:53:46.:53:52.

# To cut the throats of your sons, your women!

:53:53.:53:58.

85 days have passed since the atrocity in Paris.

:53:59.:54:34.

Two newcomers in the Italian front row, Andrea Lovotti and gay girl,

:54:35.:54:42.

born in Albania. The hooker. -- Gega. Campagnaro plays rugby for

:54:43.:54:47.

Exeter. Jenny Hill very promising hooker playing for

:54:48.:55:30.

France. What do you think, Jonathan? I have a lot of respect for Guy

:55:31.:55:34.

Noves and what he achieved at Toulouse. If he can replicate that I

:55:35.:55:39.

think it will be a very successful France at international level. Here

:55:40.:55:45.

is the referee. Hopefully we will not watch much of him today and it

:55:46.:55:51.

would be a great game. But it is amazing. He wants to play very

:55:52.:55:59.

attractively. There will be less structure under Guy Noves. Here we

:56:00.:56:04.

go, the start of the 2016 Six Nations. France hoping, promising to

:56:05.:56:20.

play with a new spirit. The new scrum-half, Sebastien Bezy, of

:56:21.:56:24.

Toulouse, Guy Noves, the former Toulouse coach. Sergio Parisse, the

:56:25.:56:31.

great Italian number eight. He makes his first catch of the game. It

:56:32.:56:38.

won't be his last. Leonardo Sarto, the strong right-winger.

:56:39.:56:46.

Canna wears none the turn for the Italians, here he is. Parisse.

:56:47.:56:59.

Tackled by Jedrasiak of Clermont Auvergne.

:57:00.:57:02.

Tackled by Jedrasiak of Clermont Italy coming through, Campagnaro,

:57:03.:57:07.

Garcia, Sato inside of the ball still alive, no it is not. He has

:57:08.:57:14.

given a penalty. Very good start, kept the ball in hand, took the ball

:57:15.:57:18.

to the line, confident start by Carlo Canna. This guy is going to be

:57:19.:57:25.

in potential. If they can control the tempo of the game. That is in

:57:26.:57:32.

touch. It will be crucial for France but I think the Italians have got to

:57:33.:57:35.

start very strongly, try and silence the crowd. George Clancy is one of

:57:36.:57:43.

the touch judges. This is the run by Campagnaro supported by Garcia. This

:57:44.:57:49.

kid is very good, Campagnaro. Notice that there was a mismatch. He took

:57:50.:57:52.

it on. Guirado throws. that there was a mismatch. He took

:57:53.:58:06.

with the catch. Second penalty for France. That is what they must try

:58:07.:58:15.

and cut out, the Italian side. Discipline. It was in the France 22

:58:16.:58:23.

and now it will give France a good attacking position. Good afternoon,

:58:24.:58:29.

Carlo. Looking at the Italian second row, Biagi. He will play a vital

:58:30.:58:34.

role in securing Italy's best attacking ball this afternoon. One

:58:35.:58:40.

thing they have two eradicate is the mistakes and penalties given. Look

:58:41.:58:43.

at that, straight into the middle of the fight. Biagi will be crucial for

:58:44.:58:47.

Italy's line-out functioning this afternoon. Guirado to throw,

:58:48.:58:53.

attacking line-out to afternoon. Guirado to throw,

:58:54.:58:58.

particularly straight. Jedrasiak with the catch. Mayor Street in the

:58:59.:59:09.

second row. This is Louis Picamoles, the ball carrying number eight. Very

:59:10.:59:17.

good play by the Italians. The body angle was all right taking the ball

:59:18.:59:21.

in. They got under him and held him up. Very good play. Disappointing by

:59:22.:59:32.

France, just watch, good line-out ball, they hold him up and Parisse

:59:33.:59:37.

comes in as well and just added his weight. That was a good turnover for

:59:38.:59:41.

the Italians. Wenceslas Lauret Wareing B head cap at six. There is

:59:42.:59:51.

Louis Picamoles, Andrea Lovotti. Lorenzo Cittadini of Wasps in the

:59:52.:00:00.

interest Premiership. -- English Premiership. Carlo, you were talking

:00:01.:00:07.

about Rabah Slimani coming in at tight head. Because he has such a

:00:08.:00:16.

short, low centre of gravity tight it puts an enormous amount of

:00:17.:00:23.

pressure on the hooker and affects his strike. He must protect and make

:00:24.:00:29.

sure Slimani stays on the outside of the hooker. A quick strike, if the

:00:30.:00:34.

hooker is still strike these days, and Briceno gets over the gain line.

:00:35.:00:42.

-- Parisse. That is a good Italian scrum. Goes backwards says the

:00:43.:00:46.

referee, Parisse goes forwards. Oh! So close for Sarto. Nearly a

:00:47.:01:05.

piece of pure brilliance. Yeah, but that's the plan.

:01:06.:01:09.

The left-winger, he doesn't commit to this whatsoever. I think the call

:01:10.:01:18.

must have come... That's got to be the tactics. He hasn't played 15

:01:19.:01:22.

aside, they've got to target him. So, so close. But a great start.

:01:23.:01:33.

Sarto, what a start that would have been.

:01:34.:01:40.

A chance for Italy to have a crack at this French scrum. Too soon. Off

:01:41.:01:52.

they go. This is Picasso. He goes in high. Maul says JP Doyle. Good play

:01:53.:02:02.

by the ie tallens. They've turned it over once again. -- Italians. It's a

:02:03.:02:06.

by the ie tallens. They've turned it tactic of trying to hold up the

:02:07.:02:10.

ball. Picasso is massive for France. If he is the

:02:11.:02:11.

ball. Picasso is massive for France. go forward and changes the game, he

:02:12.:02:15.

is the one that's going to do it. Italy just clearly have to contain

:02:16.:02:22.

him and by doing that creating that maul and ruck. That's a great tackle

:02:23.:02:33.

by Minto. Again it's the discipline, from the scrum they've had a

:02:34.:02:38.

nudge-on and the free kick was given to France.

:02:39.:02:44.

Another good Italian scrum. Sarto. Garcia on his shoulder.

:02:45.:03:08.

Canna has to sort out a bit going backwards.

:03:09.:03:25.

The Italian backs are taking the game to the French. .

:03:26.:03:39.

Stuck on 22. Here comes the drop goal attempt. He likes it!

:03:40.:03:49.

That's beautifully struck by Carlo Canna and Italy take the lead.

:03:50.:03:55.

That's a positive start by the Italians, they've carried the ball

:03:56.:04:01.

exceptionally well. This is the tackle... Steps back in the pocket.

:04:02.:04:07.

Slots it over. That's a very confident start for the young

:04:08.:04:11.

standoff. Brilliant choice to go for the drop goal. Italy's play

:04:12.:04:16.

distribution was scattered all over the field. That's very well-taken by

:04:17.:04:21.

Fuser. It's a clever way of getting out of

:04:22.:04:45.

the 22, receiving the kick-off, inside the 22 but opening up that

:04:46.:04:56.

angle. It's a poor restart by France.

:04:57.:05:06.

Vakatawa, the winger. Penalty to France. Offside.

:05:07.:05:34.

The Italians will be happy with that. They should take the line and

:05:35.:05:43.

clear their lines. Quite surprised they went for the quick tap there.

:05:44.:05:52.

Maybe a kick with a touch line in field position. A bit of stoppage.

:05:53.:06:03.

Is it the hooker? Yeah. Got to stop. He is throwing the ball in the

:06:04.:06:05.

lineout. I think it's He is throwing the ball in the

:06:06.:06:16.

sorry it's the centre. It's Garcia. They look very confident, the

:06:17.:06:23.

Italian centre partnership. Guy Noves with the glasses and the suit.

:06:24.:06:37.

The hooker prepares to throw. JP Doyle... Don't jump out.

:06:38.:06:53.

Well taken Italy. Happy with ball in hand in their own

:06:54.:07:10.

22. The Italian halfbacks have made a start. It's structured on how to

:07:11.:07:18.

get from their 22. A short lineout. A brilliant take there. Play out to

:07:19.:07:23.

the loose forward standing off. It's a clear kick to clear the lines.

:07:24.:07:30.

Very methodical, very structured. Gori is a talented scrum-half.

:07:31.:07:34.

That's a wild lineout. When nobody can get into the air you know

:07:35.:07:37.

something's going on. Yeah. This will be an interesting decision, do

:07:38.:07:40.

they go for the corner or goal? The scrum-half is also the appointed

:07:41.:07:47.

kicker. Its me that France are the only

:07:48.:08:07.

nation where the scrum-half dictates the game for them. It's interesting.

:08:08.:08:14.

It amazing me they haven't got a standoff that can control the game.

:08:15.:08:17.

So many good footballers in France and they haven't a standoff to

:08:18.:08:20.

control for manage the international game. They're looking for one. Bezy

:08:21.:08:30.

to level the scores. He's pshed it. Italy after 12

:08:31.:08:35.

minutes remain in the lead. -- pushed it.

:08:36.:08:48.

I think Zanni has gone off. That's a lot of experience goes with him.

:08:49.:08:55.

95th cap. There he is. A bit of blood. He should be back. Yeah.

:08:56.:09:18.

Good feet by the French fullback. Danty.

:09:19.:09:29.

That brings the crowd to life. Danty in the centre. A chance for

:09:30.:09:50.

Lauret. Up to the 22. Vakatawa has opened France's

:09:51.:10:43.

account. That's a classy finish. He made that look very, very easy. They

:10:44.:10:49.

worked the numbers on the left side. I thought they had blown the

:10:50.:10:50.

opportunity. They I thought they had blown the

:10:51.:10:55.

over. That's a desperate tackle. That's the clever offload. It allows

:10:56.:11:02.

three on two. That's such a classy finish. Left foot step. Close to the

:11:03.:11:06.

touch. That's the crucial, that's the money ball. He holds the man up.

:11:07.:11:16.

Boom. That's a great, great finish. It's the wide, wide play. Players

:11:17.:11:23.

distributed across the field. They wanted to bring back an expansive

:11:24.:11:28.

style of play back to France and I think you see a bit of flair there.

:11:29.:11:36.

Yeah, the forwards really offloaded well. That's young Bezy. His second

:11:37.:11:46.

kick. He's pulled this one.

:11:47.:11:48.

kick. two. But France are in the lead.

:11:49.:11:57.

5-3. Again it's the offloading. The ball-carrying of the forward. The

:11:58.:12:00.

support of Picasso. He stayed down. ball-carrying of the forward. The

:12:01.:12:08.

That's the two on one. Like to see that angle again.

:12:09.:12:20.

Might have to see that again. From that angle... From the first angle

:12:21.:12:33.

it looked OK. From that angle... That's a great catch by Maestri. The

:12:34.:12:48.

forward on for France is Yacouba Camara, a real talent, has quick

:12:49.:13:03.

feet. JP Doyle has come over to the far side. Just confirmation there

:13:04.:13:06.

that far side. Just confirmation there

:13:07.:13:15.

coming back on. The applause is because Louis Picasso' day is over.

:13:16.:13:25.

-- Picamoles. Their principal ball carrier is very different. Picamoles

:13:26.:13:30.

is very heavy on his feet. Camara is light.

:13:31.:13:50.

Andrea Lovotti penalised by the referee. That's a shame. Every time

:13:51.:13:56.

they've come into the 22 they've given a penalty or free kick away.

:13:57.:14:10.

That's a great kick. From one 22 to the other. It's the bind. Lovotti's

:14:11.:14:22.

bind needs to be longer on the loose-head side and gives that extra

:14:23.:14:25.

bind needs to be longer on the stability that JP Doyle is looking

:14:26.:14:25.

for. Penalties will come in the first 20 minutes of a game

:14:26.:14:30.

especially if the referee is looking to set out his stall early on. This

:14:31.:14:34.

is the angle of the try. Question marks over the foot. This is it.

:14:35.:14:52.

It's close. Here come France again. Fabulous pass by Vakatawa. They do

:14:53.:14:58.

find touch in that corner this time. That's great defence. Vakatawa just

:14:59.:15:06.

oozes confidence. They're going wide. The centres there get caught

:15:07.:15:12.

up. If that ball was sprayed along. He steps inside. Looks for the

:15:13.:15:19.

offload. Medard is there. They rushed up and took the dummy run.

:15:20.:15:24.

The pass was very good. He's hit him on the back of the

:15:25.:15:42.

hands. He had his hands thumped as he went for the catch. I think the

:15:43.:15:55.

Italians will be happy. Carlo with the start. That's a poor kick. They

:15:56.:16:03.

won't be happy with that. Slow, slow, and then finds Fickou. France

:16:04.:16:09.

are on the move again. The oldest player in the French team

:16:10.:16:21.

is just 30. Back to Bezy. Brilliant play. Italy, there is a

:16:22.:16:58.

chance here. Danty is back.

:16:59.:17:08.

Bellini was up. Counter-rucking by the Italians. It

:17:09.:17:11.

should come back on their side. It does.

:17:12.:17:15.

I think they'll have to go wide then. They had a few men over on the

:17:16.:17:24.

right side. Great tackle. Offside. That was an opportunity. As soon

:17:25.:17:29.

right side. Great tackle. Offside. they counter-rucked and won that

:17:30.:17:34.

ball, they had to go wide. They had numbers on the right. Vakatawa was

:17:35.:17:40.

on his own. A missed opportunity. Well, they've gone from one end of

:17:41.:17:48.

the field to the other. Here is a worrying sight, Carlo. Garcia in a

:17:49.:17:55.

bit of bother. It's two players with experience on the pitch. They need

:17:56.:18:04.

to keep them on. They'll be pleased to see Zanni back. I am impressed

:18:05.:18:09.

with the ball carrying of the French front five. Even if they're not

:18:10.:18:15.

carrying it, they're coming in as dummy runners and offload is

:18:16.:18:20.

important, as wellment. The offloads now are creating numbers on the

:18:21.:18:22.

outside. Parisse is the top 14 of the year.

:18:23.:18:51.

Following us Scotland and England, the Calcutta Cup match. And room

:18:52.:18:57.

Ireland and Wales. A Six Nations rugby special after all the weekend

:18:58.:19:03.

matches on BBC Two, 7.00pm tomorrow evening.

:19:04.:19:09.

Chouly at the lineout. Here is the pass. It's off his own player.

:19:10.:19:42.

Kelly Haimona is going to come on for Italy. Looks as if Garcia will

:19:43.:20:04.

leave the pitch. REFEREE: Bind. Set. He's gone down again. He was lucky

:20:05.:20:09.

not to get penalised. Just get the ball in and get it out. If you are

:20:10.:20:15.

under pressure, get the ball to the number eight's feet as quickly as

:20:16.:20:19.

you can. The front row forwards play their own game, Jonathan. I know

:20:20.:20:25.

that. Why put themselves under pressure? Why would you want to be

:20:26.:20:29.

in that position? That's an awkward position to be in. We all know

:20:30.:20:38.

they're a breed of their own. All the action is happening on that side

:20:39.:20:44.

which needs to be sorted out or JP Doyle might take matters into his

:20:45.:20:50.

own hands. Parisse picks up and we are under way. Garcia. He looks all

:20:51.:21:01.

right now! He has recovered well. A chance for Sarto to close down.

:21:02.:21:04.

Italy on the move. Garcia gets on the outside of Danty.

:21:05.:21:23.

That's good defence there again by Vakatawa. He drifted across. Should

:21:24.:21:30.

have kept it in hand. Italy are taking this time about this lineout.

:21:31.:21:36.

I suspect it will be a catch and maul.

:21:37.:21:42.

First things first, the throw. maul.

:21:43.:21:47.

That's very well done. Hooks the ball to the front. On comes the

:21:48.:21:50.

drive. ball to the front. On comes the

:21:51.:21:56.

penalty. Advantage. Oh, clever! Sarto. He is beaten

:21:57.:22:02.

line. That's a very clever play. They had

:22:03.:22:05.

the free play because of the penalty. They tried to use it very,

:22:06.:22:09.

very effectively, as well. Lovely kick. Good communication. Winger on

:22:10.:22:16.

the outside shoulder. You have to feel... That's twice now he has lost

:22:17.:22:27.

the ball. In the act of try-scoring. What do they do here? It's the

:22:28.:22:38.

lineout they've gone for. Canna looks thoroughly at home on

:22:39.:22:44.

the international stage. He does. Slightly longer with the throw to

:22:45.:22:49.

Parisse. France have men on the floor. This could be set up for a

:22:50.:22:55.

very sweet drive for the line. Italy power their way over. Try for Italy.

:22:56.:23:06.

Sergio Parisse. The one and only. He is the scorer. That had real menace

:23:07.:23:11.

from the moment he caught the lineout. That was a well constructed

:23:12.:23:14.

maul. They lineout. That was a well constructed

:23:15.:23:18.

well. Sergio wins the ball in the lineout. The first three players

:23:19.:23:21.

take the pressure initially from France and then shift the point of

:23:22.:23:25.

contact to the outside. The ball is at the back. It's under control and

:23:26.:23:32.

it's moving forward. Clear decision there for JP Doyle to make. That's a

:23:33.:23:40.

very, very well constructed try. I am surprised four or five of the

:23:41.:23:43.

French forwards fell to the left side. They did. There were a lot of

:23:44.:23:48.

French shirts on the floor even before the maul got going. Before

:23:49.:23:54.

the second drive, whether they misread it, it was an easy finish

:23:55.:24:00.

for Parisse. Seems to be they were in two minds. Some were driving the

:24:01.:24:10.

maul back. It needs to be all circling or all driving.

:24:11.:24:20.

Vakatawa is preparing to charge conversion. Carlo

:24:21.:24:28.

Vakatawa is preparing to charge off. He still misses. I read the

:24:29.:24:29.

stats, I think he has a 70% success rate. That isn't good enough

:24:30.:24:36.

international level. They're doing so

:24:37.:24:38.

well, the backs are running with confidence. Those are the kicks you

:24:39.:24:45.

have to nail. You have to put those kicks over. This will land in the

:24:46.:24:56.

22. Caught by Parisse. He can still kick directly into touch. It's

:24:57.:25:02.

exactly what Gori does. But keeps it on the field of play. Taken by

:25:03.:25:12.

Great tackle. That tackle. The offload is there.

:25:13.:25:28.

Penalty against Italy. Let me see that again. One thing Italy are

:25:29.:25:37.

doing really well is that again. One thing Italy are

:25:38.:25:39.

committing that many numbers to the breakdown. You have a tackler and

:25:40.:25:44.

you have the one going in to disrupt the ball. The rest of the players

:25:45.:25:48.

are fanned out across the field which is helping them absorb this

:25:49.:25:52.

wide play that France are trying to do. Is that it? I think that's it.

:25:53.:26:02.

Nothing wrong with that. This is the one maybe.

:26:03.:26:14.

Nothing high there, is there? No. Out it comes for Bezy. Garcia up

:26:15.:26:24.

with the tackle. Italy hold Fickou up. The ball is to the ground. The

:26:25.:26:30.

line speed is good, as well. Vakatawa piles in. Penalty. He was

:26:31.:27:04.

isolated. Vakatawa went in there. Don't think the cleaning out

:27:05.:27:11.

technique was very good. This is where the French, the scrum-half has

:27:12.:27:15.

to take control here. They're not committing men to the tackle. Not

:27:16.:27:20.

committing men to the ruck. You have to pass them and take it up the

:27:21.:27:24.

middle and suck defenders in. You have to earn the right to go wide

:27:25.:27:27.

first of all and they're not doing that at the moment, France. It's

:27:28.:27:30.

brilliant defence and clever work. This is the turnover again.

:27:31.:27:39.

Isolated. Easy turnover. Looking at Vakatawa, he doesn't look a natural

:27:40.:27:47.

rucker. He has come from the sevens circuit, I know. Gori nudges the

:27:48.:27:57.

ball forward. It was a scrappy lineout for Italy.

:27:58.:28:11.

He will be a happy captain so far. He will be. Half an hour gone. Italy

:28:12.:28:22.

ahead by three points. That's the halfway mark. France have appeared,

:28:23.:28:28.

in flashes, but they've also been under the kosh.

:28:29.:28:36.

The Italians have attacked twice and come away with points.

:28:37.:28:39.

The Italians have attacked twice and nudge at the scrum. Bezy escapes.

:28:40.:28:43.

Wriggles out of the tackle by Parisse.

:28:44.:28:50.

They've made something out of an unpromising start.

:28:51.:29:01.

Vakatawa. Strength there by the winger.

:29:02.:29:22.

Garcia has done well. He has recovered well. He stayed on.

:29:23.:29:41.

Maestri makes half a yard. Vakatawa into the Italian 22. Oops! Was it a

:29:42.:29:57.

knock-on? It was. Taken quickly by Fickou. Medard. Lauret.

:29:58.:30:12.

The try is scored. Chouly in the corner. There is the tap. He sees

:30:13.:30:23.

the overlap. Second row and winger to defend. That's an easy finish for

:30:24.:30:27.

Chouly. Damien Chouly. There is the outrage

:30:28.:30:45.

of Sergio Parisse. Not exactly a soft try, Carlo.

:30:46.:30:51.

It is the advantage of playing a wired player. When they come across

:30:52.:30:59.

you have those players at York disposition to keep recycling the

:31:00.:31:06.

ball. Those who stayed wide from the previous rock are not playing the

:31:07.:31:09.

same movement, they are dropping directly back allowing them to play

:31:10.:31:16.

wide. The kick from Desi. He's missed two. They have not been easy

:31:17.:31:23.

but you expect these days. He has pulled it again. -- Bezy. France are

:31:24.:31:35.

in the lead 10-8. France are holding their width very well, but the one

:31:36.:31:39.

thing they were not doing before that try was they were not engaging

:31:40.:31:45.

the defensive line when they had overlaps. It is easy for the Italian

:31:46.:31:51.

defence to just drift. That is well taken again by Maestri. Camara.

:31:52.:32:04.

Plisson. Danty. Three passes and they are across the pitch, Gael

:32:05.:32:07.

Fickou gets out of the 22. Now they are back in it. Lease on. --

:32:08.:32:18.

Plisson. The chance for Odiete to counter. We have not really seen

:32:19.:32:23.

much of him, Odiete. We thought they would put pressure on him because he

:32:24.:32:30.

has only played at regional level. Alessandro Zanni. Not Parisse's best

:32:31.:32:38.

pass but it worked for Campagnaro. It is a knock-on by Bernini. France

:32:39.:32:43.

might make something of it. Gori It is a knock-on by Bernini. France

:32:44.:32:48.

makes the tackle, lovely to pass off the ground. Medard.

:32:49.:32:55.

makes the tackle, lovely to pass off Maestri picks up. Plisson, Medard,

:32:56.:33:04.

just got a little bit ahead of themselves on the touchline. They

:33:05.:33:09.

are giving it a go from everywhere, the French. And the Italians. They

:33:10.:33:13.

are doing everything well and tactically playing above the game as

:33:14.:33:17.

far as Italy are concerned, they are playing to their strengths, kicking

:33:18.:33:20.

when they need to kick and having a go when they need to. There was a

:33:21.:33:26.

clear line break down the middle of the pitch. The Italian backline,

:33:27.:33:33.

Campagnaro, has had a couple of nice breaks. If the ball had gone to hand

:33:34.:33:38.

they could have scored some tries. How important is that conversion? It

:33:39.:33:43.

could have been 10-10 and now they are behind. Yes. Yoann Maestri.

:33:44.:33:58.

Parisse wins the line-out and the forwards form a tight group around

:33:59.:34:04.

him immediately. See if they can get the driving maul going. Penalty

:34:05.:34:13.

advantage. I think that is what they were looking for. Sergio let it go.

:34:14.:34:15.

Parisse and Maestri. He knows what he's doing. He does.

:34:16.:34:41.

Just frustrating the French side. Frustrating the French spectators.

:34:42.:34:49.

Just a matter of time before they turn. It doesn't take much. There

:34:50.:34:54.

was hope and real support at the beginning for new France. It is

:34:55.:34:56.

quite quiet now. It has gone quiet. Carlo Canna, this to give Italy the

:34:57.:35:16.

lead again. They remain two points behind.

:35:17.:35:34.

Again, at this level you expect to see those go over. He will be happy

:35:35.:35:41.

with the way they are playing but he will have to turn those into points.

:35:42.:35:46.

It's a rare in the modern game to have five kicks and no successes.

:35:47.:35:52.

The standard of kicking in the modern game is outstanding and to

:35:53.:35:53.

see those missed, I modern game is outstanding and to

:35:54.:35:58.

is in shock. Leonardo Sarto sets off, he's had a busy first half,

:35:59.:36:03.

is in shock. Leonardo Sarto sets Italian. That

:36:04.:36:06.

is in shock. Leonardo Sarto sets and France have turned it over. But

:36:07.:36:09.

they have gone offside. So there will be time for the kick into the

:36:10.:36:16.

corner. And they will have a line-out and a maul and a drive.

:36:17.:36:26.

Let's see what he goes for, does he go for everything? No, difficult

:36:27.:36:32.

angle and it's not a bad kick. Sato takes the ball in. That hasn't been

:36:33.:36:43.

a very good battle. I'm not sure what the decision was for. Parisse.

:36:44.:36:53.

Good pass to Gori. Here come Italy peeling around. Parisse writes the

:36:54.:37:01.

challenge of Maestri. Canna dropped goal from this position but they are

:37:02.:37:07.

coming through by hand. Campagnaro. Put firmly to ground. Biagi. Gori to

:37:08.:37:19.

Canna, to Parisse. Parisse has been immense this half. We say it all the

:37:20.:37:26.

time but what they first half performance from Parisse. They need

:37:27.:37:33.

to be patient, the Italians. Move to the middle of the field or get a

:37:34.:37:39.

penalty, and have a 3-pointer to go in at half-time in front.

:37:40.:37:42.

Psychologically that would be great for the Italians, be patient,

:37:43.:37:47.

control it, go midfield. I think that's what they are planning. Marco

:37:48.:37:55.

Fuser, the second row, takes it up. Brilliant, off-loaded to Campagnaro

:37:56.:37:58.

and he will score if he can reach that he can't quite find the line,

:37:59.:38:04.

and away, France. Back at our. He's away again! Off he comes, the giant

:38:05.:38:12.

winger. He's had the most entertaining first half. Plisson

:38:13.:38:18.

tries to find the touch. We are in overtime,

:38:19.:38:18.

tries to find the touch. We are in first half comes to an end. France

:38:19.:38:24.

lead but we've had high excitement at the Stade de France, France 10-8

:38:25.:38:30.

Italy. Desperate tackle. Watch this off-loaded, lovely off-load again by

:38:31.:38:37.

the youngster, and that is a desperate tackle by Fickou. Oh! How

:38:38.:38:39.

close was that? STUDIO: You know there's's France go

:38:40.:39:01.

in ahead at half-time just. Possession well ahead, two thirds of

:39:02.:39:05.

the position for France, off-loads ahead quite considerably 14-4 and

:39:06.:39:09.

metres made, the running game, passing the ball through as many

:39:10.:39:12.

pairs of hands as they camp that he was looking for, and some of that

:39:13.:39:16.

was on show in the first half, there was good, bad and ugly. What do you

:39:17.:39:20.

think he will make of his first taste of international rugby? I'm

:39:21.:39:25.

surprised by Italy, but what should have been our strength in the front

:39:26.:39:29.

five, we are disappointed. I think Italy are much drunker than as in

:39:30.:39:33.

the drives and line-outs, they carry the ball very well. Defensively, 12,

:39:34.:39:42.

13, we are not organised and have created gaps and the Italians have

:39:43.:39:47.

taken some metres from our defence. We are struggling in that position.

:39:48.:39:50.

They looked like there were capitalising in all of the areas

:39:51.:39:53.

that we highlighted France were going to be weak in in that game.

:39:54.:39:57.

They did and they had a good breakdown, those five turnovers they

:39:58.:40:02.

won and France had non-, which is a pretty amazing statistic after 40

:40:03.:40:06.

minutes of rugby. France are not energetic at scrum time or at the

:40:07.:40:10.

ruck. That is unusual because we would have thought that is where

:40:11.:40:13.

they would have the bit of pizzazz and got stuck into it. Their energy

:40:14.:40:16.

level has been a bit lower. They seem to stand back a little bit for

:40:17.:40:20.

the first ten or 15 minutes and then they got a buzz with the first try

:40:21.:40:24.

but it took a bit of time before they got it and they were a bit

:40:25.:40:27.

nervous. Maybe we are expecting too much and we got caught up in some of

:40:28.:40:31.

the occasion that was here beforehand, but you do expect a

:40:32.:40:36.

French team that should be on top, and when they have the ball

:40:37.:40:39.

comfortably they are on top and they should take advantage of it and they

:40:40.:40:45.

haven't taken advantage. The debutants for Italy, Canna, at the

:40:46.:40:49.

heart of a lot of moves and Sato, who has more wrecks periods, didn't

:40:50.:40:53.

look at all overwhelmed. No, he didn't and that's the fault of the

:40:54.:40:57.

French team, you've got to put them under pressure. They had much too

:40:58.:41:00.

easy a start in the first 40 minutes, the debutants, and you've

:41:01.:41:04.

got to put pressure on them and make them feel uncomfortable. I agree

:41:05.:41:08.

with Keith, the French team looked nervous and they don't look to be

:41:09.:41:12.

playing with much confidence yet. They put pressure on Bakare Tower,

:41:13.:41:16.

Italy. He did get the try but they made him work and they saw where he

:41:17.:41:21.

would be exposed and make the most of the moments where he was unsure

:41:22.:41:24.

on the high balls and unsure in defence. Yes but we knew what his

:41:25.:41:28.

weaknesses would be, the high balls and defensively, he's a bit wide

:41:29.:41:35.

compared to Fickou, so he doesn't have centres, but when he has the

:41:36.:41:39.

ball he is a threat and he scored a try so he can make the difference.

:41:40.:41:42.

We need to move the ball as Carlo said, when we play wide wide we look

:41:43.:41:47.

interesting, Kante brings something special compared to Bastareaud, and

:41:48.:41:54.

we managed to move the ball. But we need to do it a bit more. We can

:41:55.:41:58.

have a look at the first try and Bakare tower, as you say, the best

:41:59.:42:03.

of him is when you get the ball wide and his feet as well, they were

:42:04.:42:05.

fantastic. -- Bakare That space becomes live and we have

:42:06.:42:17.

not seen that from France for a long time. Suddenly they are on the

:42:18.:42:21.

outside, Italy trying to put up as line and they tried to do it here.

:42:22.:42:25.

Decent line, lots of players coming up against them, but we just saw one

:42:26.:42:29.

player sneaking up on the outside and that's what you're looking for

:42:30.:42:33.

in attacking back. Even there we saw some players were walking. I think

:42:34.:42:39.

it is a brand-new team. We need to get into position a bit quicker and

:42:40.:42:44.

show more determination. Even if Picamoles made the difference, we

:42:45.:42:49.

could maybe have scored a bit earlier and that was a good option,

:42:50.:42:55.

Vakatawa. Was that a forward Pascua smack I have to say yes. -- was it a

:42:56.:43:05.

forward pass? The referee gave it but the touch judge was squatting

:43:06.:43:08.

down on the ground looking at where it was so he could make the call

:43:09.:43:11.

immediately and they didn't have to go upstairs, which is good. I want

:43:12.:43:15.

to take one quick point about what Matt said, as a debutante playing in

:43:16.:43:21.

a big arena like this it is so unbelievably hard, such a huge step

:43:22.:43:24.

up and that is where the pressure has to camp but there has not been

:43:25.:43:27.

that pressure, except maybe on the kicking team. Let's have a look at

:43:28.:43:33.

some of Italy's best work because they opened exceptionally well in

:43:34.:43:37.

the first few minutes of the game, Sarto on Vakatawa. It is obviously a

:43:38.:43:43.

game plan, positionally it will be tough coming from a sevens

:43:44.:43:47.

background and he will get caught out of position but he brings

:43:48.:43:53.

excitement to the team. As soon as he touches the ball the crowd get

:43:54.:43:56.

excited. But positionally his getting caught out. This was a Canna

:43:57.:44:01.

goalkick here. Sorry, the little dinked over. You are certain it is a

:44:02.:44:22.

try but then the tiny little fumble and he didn't want to kick it, he

:44:23.:44:26.

wants to run. I like that he's getting involved, it's his first

:44:27.:44:30.

test but he's trying his hand at things and playing with confidence.

:44:31.:44:31.

You would love things and playing with confidence.

:44:32.:44:40.

instead of kicking in front of the posts he takes the option to play.

:44:41.:44:43.

It's a bit surprising for Italy because they were getting into

:44:44.:44:47.

position and then he took the ball and score that try. That is a new

:44:48.:44:50.

spirit for the French team and a new way of playing. Let's have a look at

:44:51.:44:56.

Parisse's try. He is the class act in this 15. The game is going to be

:44:57.:45:07.

so much the less when that man picks up -- hangs up his boots. The focus

:45:08.:45:12.

and concentration has traditionally been Italy's strength. We didn't

:45:13.:45:16.

really expect it today. We thought the front five might struggle but

:45:17.:45:19.

that is incredibly good technical play. And the French team tried to

:45:20.:45:24.

jump and catch the ball but maybe they should have pushed it and then

:45:25.:45:28.

they struggled. If you push it you have to slow it down or drag

:45:29.:45:32.

somebody down, it is a technical thing. With a new coach and new

:45:33.:45:35.

players sometimes these things take time. We will come to the kicking in

:45:36.:45:40.

a moment which has been poor from both sides but Italy could have

:45:41.:45:44.

taken a nice jump ahead but for the kicking. The game is really in the

:45:45.:45:48.

balance. Frans didn't panic. But they didn't seem to have the

:45:49.:45:54.

urgency, did they? No, and as Matt said for the first 15 minutes we

:45:55.:45:57.

thought we would be much more aggressive and jump on these guys

:45:58.:46:01.

but we were waiting and let them build confidence. Even if Canna

:46:02.:46:05.

didn't score the points with his kicking, but the way he played and

:46:06.:46:08.

moved the ball was interesting in the first half, so they looked

:46:09.:46:10.

dangerous all the time. Go on. the first half, so they looked

:46:11.:46:16.

going to say what has been good for Canna is he has somebody like

:46:17.:46:20.

Parisse, when he misses the kicks Parisse will come and comfort him

:46:21.:46:24.

and making feel comfortable. The biggest thing France need to do is

:46:25.:46:27.

put pressure on him and make him feel as uncomfortable as possible.

:46:28.:46:34.

put pressure on him and make him because Fickou, we talked about

:46:35.:46:35.

France using inventiveness and doing something different and you got it

:46:36.:46:41.

here. You can see the naivete. They brought him into the French team and

:46:42.:46:46.

they want to take their options. But I think Fickou knows best what he

:46:47.:46:51.

can do and he's confident with that, that is why he the option. We've

:46:52.:46:53.

talked a lot this week about that is why he the option. We've

:46:54.:46:58.

Ireland's lack of competence picking guys who are 20 or 21.

:46:59.:47:01.

Ireland's lack of competence picking fearlessness of youth, they see

:47:02.:47:05.

there is a try and you have to go and do it, not what you

:47:06.:47:06.

there is a try and you have to go these situations, they go by gut

:47:07.:47:12.

instinct. If you think about French rugby it is almost

:47:13.:47:16.

It is enjoyable to watch that back again. Picking

:47:17.:47:19.

It is enjoyable to watch that back the half, to see Fickou do that and

:47:20.:47:20.

create that the half, to see Fickou do that and

:47:21.:47:24.

to what he wants to embrace. When they play with speed they look good,

:47:25.:47:29.

the most dangerous playing off-the-cuff, when they have that

:47:30.:47:32.

bit of unpredictable easy about them, that is when they looked most

:47:33.:47:35.

dangerous. His biggest message should be to go out there and play

:47:36.:47:39.

with no shackles and play with confidence and it will be a

:47:40.:47:42.

different team. When Italy give the ball to Medard, which was

:47:43.:47:46.

entertaining in the first half, he can make breaks and some steps. They

:47:47.:47:50.

don't want to do bad kicks, so they don't have many options and they

:47:51.:47:54.

need to put more pressure on the No 10 with the back rows. We don't have

:47:55.:47:58.

this tackling machine that we had in the past, so six and seven need to

:47:59.:48:05.

put more pressure on Italy. Let's see what Carlo Del Fava thinks with

:48:06.:48:08.

Lee McKenzie. Carlo, I'm sure if you'd been

:48:09.:48:11.

offered 10-8 at half-time before the match started you would have taken

:48:12.:48:15.

it. What has impressed you most about the Italian side?

:48:16.:48:19.

The way they are managing the game tactically. In attack they are

:48:20.:48:22.

kicking when they need to kick and being directed when they need to and

:48:23.:48:26.

taking chances when they come up and in defence they have been controlled

:48:27.:48:29.

and patient and transitioning between the two quite seamlessly and

:48:30.:48:34.

it shows the difference between having a coach in playful four years

:48:35.:48:37.

and a coach who has just come in and has not had a chance to put

:48:38.:48:41.

structures in. Well done by Italy in the first half but we need more of

:48:42.:48:45.

the same in the second. It will be interesting to see if they can

:48:46.:48:49.

maintain that in the second half, thank you, Carlo.

:48:50.:48:52.

We are half an hour away from the second match of this year's Six

:48:53.:48:56.

Nations at Murrayfield and new look England take on Scotland, maybe a

:48:57.:49:00.

new look Eddie Jones is the new man at the helm.

:49:01.:49:06.

What are England going to look like under Eddie Jones? I want them to be

:49:07.:49:12.

robust. Good teams are always robust, able to adjust, able to

:49:13.:49:16.

adapt, find a way of playing good rugby. Sometimes good rugby is

:49:17.:49:21.

kicking the ball high and chasing hard if circumstances dictate and

:49:22.:49:24.

other times it's moving the ball into space quickly and having the

:49:25.:49:28.

courage to take three on two ten yards from your own line and other

:49:29.:49:31.

times it might be having a driving scrum to keep the ball in and get a

:49:32.:49:37.

penalty and win the game 9-6. We got to be robust and adaptable and I

:49:38.:49:41.

want the team every time they play that the fans recognise the players

:49:42.:49:45.

in the team are doing everything they can to make sure England win.

:49:46.:49:50.

Your reaction on Twitter was good choice can a smart coach, cause a

:49:51.:49:54.

spade a spade and I've copped many sprays from him over the years. You

:49:55.:49:58.

are still in awe and fear of him come almost. What did he bring to

:49:59.:50:02.

your game? It's almost like if I saw him here I wouldn't know how to

:50:03.:50:06.

behave, he's that type of coach and he has that presence. For me he made

:50:07.:50:12.

me think differently about the game, differently about my team-mates and

:50:13.:50:17.

how I contribute to the team. He brings that selflessness. Whether

:50:18.:50:21.

England have been selfish in the past, they certainly won't be with

:50:22.:50:25.

Eddie moving forward. You were consulted on his appointment as

:50:26.:50:29.

well. I was called from the private number and they asked me to give

:50:30.:50:35.

very view on Eddie and I said he will be a great coach but you have

:50:36.:50:39.

to be ready to work. There are times at two or three in the morning and

:50:40.:50:42.

he will slip something under the door for the secretary and by six or

:50:43.:50:46.

seven he wants it back. He is a guy that does not sleep Dutch and he

:50:47.:50:50.

expects that from everyone else, but he's there for the right reasons, he

:50:51.:50:55.

wouldn't do it just for money. You could have sabotaged English rugby

:50:56.:50:58.

by giving him a bad review. Do you think he will get more out of these

:50:59.:51:02.

players than they realise they have? It is essentially the same group of

:51:03.:51:06.

players, he hasn't injected much new blood. No but what he will bring is

:51:07.:51:11.

accountability, he will make the players own how they want to play

:51:12.:51:16.

and from there they have then got to bring back to life. They've got to

:51:17.:51:21.

play with that aggression. He was saying there that he wants them to

:51:22.:51:25.

be robust and to be able to change and be versatile. These are the type

:51:26.:51:28.

of things he will bring to the table. Of course, when you come in

:51:29.:51:33.

like this and there is expectation, one game is not going to be a

:51:34.:51:37.

wholesale change for England. They will go there thinking they can get

:51:38.:51:40.

a result, that he's handled the last week or so wealth in terms of

:51:41.:51:44.

deflecting pressure away from the players. I think he is very

:51:45.:51:50.

entertaining and good craic in the press conferences and arrogant too.

:51:51.:51:56.

I think that suits England, it's not in a bad way. I do think this kind

:51:57.:52:00.

of deprecating thing they have had for the last four years didn't sit

:52:01.:52:03.

that well with them. England are used to being champions and used to

:52:04.:52:07.

winning all the time and they hadn't. They became very nice men

:52:08.:52:11.

over the last four years, and I don't think he likes any of that. He

:52:12.:52:14.

said he doesn't care how nice they are or not, he wants them to be

:52:15.:52:19.

winners. It is a big challenge and it will be good to watch. I'm not

:52:20.:52:23.

sure you care to much whether England do well not today, Tom

:52:24.:52:26.

Dascombe but what did you make of the appointment, you are smiling. It

:52:27.:52:31.

is always good to be a coach when you didn't play any games because

:52:32.:52:34.

you don't have any results but after two or three games he will feel the

:52:35.:52:37.

pressure, and his attitude with the press will be a bit different. What

:52:38.:52:42.

do you think we will see different from the England team in this Six

:52:43.:52:45.

Nations? What is the immediate thing we will notice? I just think that

:52:46.:52:50.

the players will be accountable, which means those little 1% things,

:52:51.:52:58.

if you think it is a bit hard, you will move there because you know

:52:59.:53:01.

that every part of your game will be dissected by Eddie. He has a system

:53:02.:53:04.

where everything positive gives you a plus and everything negative gives

:53:05.:53:09.

you a minus, hitting a ruck or not hitting Iraq. My first test against

:53:10.:53:13.

England I got -4 so you know if you played poorly. I still have that

:53:14.:53:21.

record! -- hitting a ruck. You were scared of him! The match has kicked

:53:22.:53:27.

off, let's go back to our Eddie, Eddie Butler.

:53:28.:53:33.

COMMENTATOR: France in possession, no changes from either side at

:53:34.:53:39.

half-time. There has been a change, Camara is on instead of Picamoles

:53:40.:53:43.

who was injured in the first half. Interception, this time Leonardo

:53:44.:53:50.

Sarto does hang onto the ball. He was in the clear twice in the first

:53:51.:53:54.

half. He read that very well, Sarto, spotting the overlap, nearly got the

:53:55.:53:59.

intercept, and he has a penalty for his side. Here is one of the shining

:54:00.:54:06.

lights of the first half, Young Carlo Canna. With ball in hand he's

:54:07.:54:12.

been very, very good. He has varied his kicking. But unfortunately. He

:54:13.:54:23.

missed off the tee. There we go, two men extra. Carlo Canna is big and

:54:24.:54:33.

strong, Leonardo Sarto. One of my favourites from the Academy. He's

:54:34.:54:34.

really promising. There we can see favourites from the Academy. He's

:54:35.:54:40.

Louis Picamoles not in a good state and missing him is a massive blow

:54:41.:54:44.

for France. France steel and Italian line-out. Delphic you. It has gone

:54:45.:55:00.

wrong for France in their own 22. -- steal the Italian line-out. --

:55:01.:55:05.

Fickou. It just went through the fingertips. Bonneval here. France

:55:06.:55:12.

tried to play the wide game. Difficult for the winner. We've

:55:13.:55:16.

hardly mentioned Bonneval so far. Yes. That's the touchline ban which

:55:17.:55:31.

Vakatawa tiptoed for his try. Here is Edoardo Gori feeding the scrum.

:55:32.:55:39.

Just looking at the angle of Rabah Slimani. He does turn in. JP Doyle,

:55:40.:55:55.

penalty Italy. Canna is going for goal.

:55:56.:56:04.

Imagine now how this young lad is feeling. He hasn't put one over yet.

:56:05.:56:12.

He's playing well. The pressure will be growing. We mentioned before

:56:13.:56:20.

Rabah Slimani coming in on the angle towards the hooker. Italy ideally in

:56:21.:56:25.

that situation would prefer a right-handed up on the scrum to get

:56:26.:56:28.

the fastball in and keeping the loose forwards as far away from

:56:29.:56:30.

Carlo Canna as possible. Nun from two, this is to put Italy

:56:31.:56:38.

in the lead. -- no kicks from two. That will take

:56:39.:56:59.

the pressure off. Unfortunately Biagi is off. The Italians will be

:57:00.:57:04.

happy. Biagi takes his leave. Valerio Bernabo is on. He took that

:57:05.:57:30.

very well. Another good drive by Italy and away comes Parisse. Well

:57:31.:57:34.

taken by Canna. That's great play Italy and away comes Parisse. Well

:57:35.:57:41.

again, straight under. And back to Canna and Campagnaro. Odiete. Canna

:57:42.:57:50.

again. Bellini comes around. There is a chance here, as Parisse comes

:57:51.:57:56.

close to the 22, Garcia into the French 22. The crowd watches in

:57:57.:58:02.

silence as Italy ask allsorts of questions. Good tackle by Eddy Ben

:58:03.:58:07.

Arous, the proper. questions. Good tackle by Eddy Ben

:58:08.:58:14.

Parisse. -- the prop. Sarto. Gori. He is in. On the blindside,

:58:15.:58:28.

Parisse for the line, and he's so close.

:58:29.:58:34.

Parisse for the line, and he's so hasn't made the line. It is a try

:58:35.:58:37.

for the man of the moment, Carlo Canna scores. Well, well, well.

:58:38.:58:41.

for the man of the moment, Carlo tell you what,

:58:42.:58:41.

for the man of the moment, Carlo with ball in hand, Canna.

:58:42.:58:44.

for the man of the moment, Carlo with Parisse for man of the first

:58:45.:58:48.

half, that says with Parisse for man of the first

:58:49.:58:53.

run by Parisse first and then finishes it. The Italians are

:58:54.:58:56.

totally dominating the first part finishes it. The Italians are

:58:57.:58:59.

the second half, dictating finishes it. The Italians are

:59:00.:59:06.

the pace has been played. I thought he was going to make it, but then

:59:07.:59:12.

the off-load, and that is a very simple try. And under all sorts of

:59:13.:59:18.

pressure from Amy and Julie who was miles offside. That

:59:19.:59:20.

pressure from Amy and Julie who was catch as well. That pressure all

:59:21.:59:23.

came from a clean kick-off by Bernardo. -- Chouly. You cannot put

:59:24.:59:35.

that tried down to catching the ball from the kick-off. I'm not having

:59:36.:59:40.

that! So often we see it happen the other way, drop ball, knock-on,

:59:41.:59:48.

scrum goes to the opposition. It is that discipline to maintain

:59:49.:59:50.

possession and that's the result. We will give him an assist for catching

:59:51.:59:52.

that. Canna with the kick. He's got it. He

:59:53.:59:57.

has got it. His confidence is up. Canna with the kick. He's got it. He

:59:58.:00:14.

Jacques Brunel, the coach of Canna with the kick. He's got it. He

:00:15.:00:18.

That was a great run and a great tackle, brilliant ball and brilliant

:00:19.:00:24.

angle. They deserve to be eight points in front, I have to say. Away

:00:25.:00:31.

comes Campagnaro but JP Doyle's whistle sounded. Deliberate

:00:32.:00:39.

knock-on, no it wasn't deliberate, that would be a penalty, it is just

:00:40.:00:46.

a scrum. This is Parisse. Vakatawa comes in now with a fantastic

:00:47.:00:50.

tackle. The defence are all over the place. He is having a brilliant

:00:51.:00:54.

match. I think everyone is shocked by the

:00:55.:01:04.

scoreline so far. No one expected this.

:01:05.:01:09.

And Italy have taken one against the head. Away comes Gori. Bezy gets in

:01:10.:01:14.

the way. Danty.

:01:15.:01:30.

Fickou runs into Chouly. France are struggling to build momentum and

:01:31.:01:36.

continuity. As soon as they get anything that happens that's good

:01:37.:01:39.

resembling going forward, it breaks down and it's turnover ball. If

:01:40.:01:44.

there is anybody that's going to change it, if that's man Jonathan

:01:45.:01:50.

Danty. They're too loose at the moment, I feel. Everything is going

:01:51.:01:54.

wide. The Italian defence is very well organised. Their line speed is

:01:55.:01:58.

good. They're not getting anywhere. They've got to go forward, pick and

:01:59.:02:02.

drive, pick and drive. Suck defenders in and then go wide.

:02:03.:02:06.

They're just not doing it at the moment. Who runs the defence, Carlo,

:02:07.:02:14.

is it Garcia? Jacques Brunel is the initial instruction. Garcia is

:02:15.:02:18.

instrumental and it's very important that stays on the pitch. The free

:02:19.:02:22.

kick will now come. Up charges Sarto. It's a French

:02:23.:02:41.

throw. Five metres from their own line. They're putting all the

:02:42.:02:52.

pressure on the French. That's a poor take.

:02:53.:03:09.

The captain with the throw. Safely taken by Maestri.

:03:10.:03:21.

France's first drive from a lineout and maul. It's a good one too.

:03:22.:03:36.

Vakatawa with the follow-up tackle. Holding on to it. Good chase.

:03:37.:03:45.

Vakatawa was in there. Good support, as well. Tries to stay on his feet

:03:46.:03:52.

to give his players a little bit more time to get behind him.

:03:53.:04:10.

Now we start the changes, on to the field come giant figures

:04:11.:04:45.

They've to use it quickly. Into the arms of Garcia.

:04:46.:05:04.

The first touch for Atonio. 145 kilograms of him. Plisson plays

:05:05.:05:17.

scrum-half. A charge by Poirot. A change of

:05:18.:05:31.

tactic by Plisson, works well for him. Now the forwards arrive. Good

:05:32.:05:39.

defence again. Driven back in attack. Given the defensive line

:05:40.:05:47.

time to get organised. Italy allowed to play on.

:05:48.:05:52.

Garcia puts it deep into the French 22. Italy are just where they want

:05:53.:05:57.

to be. That's a great kick again. Left peg. Along the ground. The

:05:58.:06:03.

problem, it doesn't seem to have any leadership whatsoever.

:06:04.:06:05.

problem, it doesn't seem to have any the French at the moment. Rather

:06:06.:06:10.

than being as a team, it's all individual stuff. Some is coming

:06:11.:06:15.

off, but they're not threatening. I don't feel the Italian defensive

:06:16.:06:18.

line is threatened whatsoever. They're so confident. They're

:06:19.:06:21.

comfortable in what they're doing. At the moment they've a lot to do

:06:22.:06:24.

France to get back into this game. He has to come inside. Fickou makes

:06:25.:07:09.

the tackle in the end. Again it's a penalty against Italy at the

:07:10.:07:12.

breakdown. He was going across the field,

:07:13.:07:30.

breakdown. He was going across the really, was he? No one offered

:07:31.:07:44.

themselves. France have to rebuild, start again from their own half.

:07:45.:07:49.

They've to try to put pressure on the Italians in their own 22. They

:07:50.:07:55.

seem to have this attitude of going wide from everywhere.

:07:56.:08:29.

Italy get back to help their fullback. At the minute they have

:08:30.:08:38.

numbers. Into touch.

:08:39.:08:47.

Italy's Minto is going through an awful lot of work. You see Italy

:08:48.:08:53.

here with numbers on the outside and not using that angle back into touch

:08:54.:08:59.

to find some more real estate. The ball gets bundled into touch. On

:09:00.:09:08.

that kick, the first one back is Minto. There is Luke McLean, he is

:09:09.:09:16.

on the field. It's David Odiete coming off. I think that's a clever

:09:17.:09:22.

tactical change because Odiete hasn't done much. He hasn't had to

:09:23.:09:28.

do much. What McLean offers is a good kicking option with a left

:09:29.:09:33.

foot. He has come on to complement Canna. If they need to play this in

:09:34.:09:42.

the French 22 that's the option they need.

:09:43.:09:54.

Parisse read it sue personally -- superbly well and took the French

:09:55.:10:02.

throw. Very quiet here.

:10:03.:10:22.

just feel the Italians are controlling this game. With Parisse

:10:23.:10:27.

and Gori they're controlling the tempo of the game. As the boys said

:10:28.:10:31.

in the studio, when it's played at pace, France look at their best. But

:10:32.:10:38.

they're slowing everything down, the tackles are good. They're causing

:10:39.:10:43.

problems in the resettling of the ball.

:10:44.:11:06.

There is space there. It's Sarto flying up. Everything is causing

:11:07.:11:13.

France problems at the flying up. Everything is causing

:11:14.:11:16.

they're doing, they're going wide, OK. Then they're forcing the French

:11:17.:11:22.

back line to come up and the guy who pushed that into touch was the

:11:23.:11:28.

covering winger. They're playing very, very well the Italians,

:11:29.:11:31.

tactically astute. I think it's the best I have seen Italy play for a

:11:32.:11:35.

long time. Everyone expected the youngsters to be inexperienced and

:11:36.:11:38.

under pressure, they've really stepped up to the plate. They've got

:11:39.:11:44.

to keep it going now for the remainder of the game. Vakatawa

:11:45.:11:57.

comes away with it. Anything could happen yet.

:11:58.:12:10.

Slow everything down now. Doesn't seem to be any urgency in the

:12:11.:12:28.

Slow everything down now. Doesn't play at the moment. No, it's a long

:12:29.:12:32.

time since they've had any sustained period of time in the Italian half.

:12:33.:12:43.

It's overthrown this time. It's a knock-on, advantage to Italy.

:12:44.:12:48.

They're starting to knock-on, advantage to Italy.

:12:49.:12:51.

Italian lineout. They need to keep it solid.

:12:52.:12:58.

JP Doyle, giving Italy the advantage there. He has given France the

:12:59.:13:06.

scrummage. If they've got to go on and win this game they've to cut the

:13:07.:13:12.

errors out. It's crucial they win the lineout ball. Lineout ball is

:13:13.:13:19.

the best attacking ball and losing a lineout in the French half is

:13:20.:13:23.

something you can not afford. It's important the new front row get

:13:24.:13:28.

their processes right in the scrumming and get more pressure on

:13:29.:13:31.

to this French front five. Vakatawa. Looks for the offload.

:13:32.:13:45.

Huge strength by the winger. A real chance now for France.

:13:46.:14:04.

They crank it up inside the 22. He is in. Try for the French winger.

:14:05.:14:14.

Will it go to review? Graham Hughes, the television match

:14:15.:14:37.

official. That's exactly what we said when they play at pace, they're

:14:38.:14:46.

dangerous. It's coming up now. Poor communication there. Try.

:14:47.:14:56.

Yeah, that's cool. That is a try. That should not have been scored.

:14:57.:15:06.

The communication was poor and they - the Italian players went with the

:15:07.:15:11.

same man which allowed the other winger to go down the touchline.

:15:12.:15:15.

He's come from the wrong side, but the opportunity there, they had

:15:16.:15:20.

He's come from the wrong side, but it. He stepped in.

:15:21.:15:26.

They love this guy over here, Vakatawa. He made the initial break

:15:27.:15:31.

on the right. Change of kicker, change of

:15:32.:15:43.

fortunes. Jules Plisson adds the conversion and France are within one

:15:44.:15:46.

point. They've got the numbers. He steps in because he has a prop on

:15:47.:15:54.

the inside. That's what happens. Zanni steps in because he is

:15:55.:15:58.

watching... He has to stay out. If he stays out, that try is not

:15:59.:16:02.

scored. We are into the last quarter of the match. Carlo Canna starts

:16:03.:16:14.

again. The try scorer, Hugo Bonneval.

:16:15.:16:26.

A fine kick. The crowd has come to life. France still trail by that

:16:27.:16:39.

single point. This is a try. He steps in and they were covering

:16:40.:16:42.

defenders. He has to stay out. Communication. Although it's a prop,

:16:43.:16:49.

you have got to trust your inside defender and stay out.

:16:50.:16:59.

Italy win a lineout. Bellini. Campagnaro has lost it.

:17:00.:17:16.

Turnover ball for France. Danty comes away with it. Oh,

:17:17.:17:17.

interception. The whistle has gone. Such a dangerous runner, Danty.

:17:18.:17:42.

Campagnaro can't hang on to the ball. He had a little look up,

:17:43.:17:46.

didn't he? Now the Calcutta Cup match from

:17:47.:17:58.

Murrayfield immediately after this game in Paris. That's a big game.

:17:59.:18:07.

And tomorrow Ireland versus Wales. 3.00pm. Rugby special on BBC Two

:18:08.:18:14.

tomorrow at 7.00pm. REFEREE: Crouch. Bind. Set. France

:18:15.:18:40.

just inside their own half. Here he is. Vakatawa.

:18:41.:18:41.

just inside their own half. happens always, the ball gets left

:18:42.:18:50.

behind. Plisson. Bonneval cuts inside. Bellini with the tackle.

:18:51.:19:00.

Another pass hits the deck. Poirot the prop.

:19:01.:19:05.

Camara the wing forward. The captain let's it go. There was an

:19:06.:19:14.

opportunity there. Oh, hang on. Bellini grateful to hear the

:19:15.:19:20.

whistle. Italy under serious pressure in that

:19:21.:19:24.

last scrum against France. Wouldn't be surprised if you saw a

:19:25.:19:32.

replacement coming on. He wasn't expecting that. Don't understand

:19:33.:19:35.

players who don't expect the ball to come to them. When you are on the

:19:36.:19:38.

rugby pitch you should expect the ball to come to you, that's the

:19:39.:19:51.

whole point of the game. He caught his head on the knee, I think. There

:19:52.:20:04.

he is, he will nudge ahead in the most capped list, Martin

:20:05.:20:10.

Castrogiovanni. Catches the knee on the back of the head. No intent

:20:11.:20:15.

there. Surprised he hasn't gone off to have a check. And assessment.

:20:16.:20:25.

After that try now the atmosphere's come back. The crowd's got behind

:20:26.:20:31.

them. I think they think they're winning. I do! They're still one

:20:32.:20:38.

point behind. It's a lovely day in Paris, not clear sky overhead but

:20:39.:20:46.

high, wispy cloud. The floodlights are on. France still trail.

:20:47.:20:59.

Parisse chases. have that. Now

:21:00.:21:46.

Parisse chases. get back. The ball is in touch as

:21:47.:21:48.

Vakatawa went down on it. get back. The ball is in touch as

:21:49.:22:01.

flying down. There is the hit. There is the pass. For one second I

:22:02.:22:07.

thought Zanni was going for the intercept. Changes in the Italian

:22:08.:22:13.

front row. A few big rigs just ran on that

:22:14.:22:37.

field now. Solid up front and they need to get straight into this game

:22:38.:22:44.

now. There is a bit of daring shown by Italy. That's well-worked, as

:22:45.:22:49.

well. Well managed. But, here comes Vakatawa.

:22:50.:23:11.

Here he is again. The large, imposing front row forwards happy in

:23:12.:23:18.

midfield. That's good defence by Italy,

:23:19.:24:05.

getting the winger into touch. 66 minutes gone. Italy lead by one

:24:06.:24:15.

point. Here it comes. Canna stands his ground. You said before, Carlo,

:24:16.:24:21.

that they don't want the big guys running at Canna but he stood up

:24:22.:24:25.

strongly today. He stood his ground. I think he is full of confidence at

:24:26.:24:32.

the moment. Him being an ex-policeman himself he is not going

:24:33.:24:35.

to stand back and this big running machine at you, he stands his

:24:36.:24:42.

ground, makes his hit. Fair play to Canna there. I think he has played

:24:43.:24:48.

exceptionally well. Has to work on his kicking. His percentage, his

:24:49.:24:53.

success he has to get up:. Bonneval waits. Under pressure from

:24:54.:25:36.

Canna. A good take. Plisson now. Danty again. They pile into the

:25:37.:25:44.

ruck. Penalty to France. Plisson has to

:25:45.:25:57.

have a go for this. That's not a great sight. Catch by Hugo Bonneval.

:25:58.:26:23.

Just trying to see who is injured. I think it's Medard. The fullback?

:26:24.:26:43.

That's the distance. Here is the kicker, Jules Plisson.

:26:44.:27:23.

Beautifully struck. Distance not a problem at all. Went sailing

:27:24.:27:31.

through. The new coach Guy Noves is happy enough. France nr the lead.

:27:32.:27:40.

Looking at the last two strikes that Plisson has kicked I can understand

:27:41.:27:45.

why Bezy started, because he has nailed the last two kicks. Maestri

:27:46.:27:53.

with the call and the catch. That's a good kick. Luke McLean,

:27:54.:28:08.

deep in his 22. That's a long hit too.

:28:09.:28:22.

What's this ball going to do? Parisse has it. There is time. 69

:28:23.:28:41.

minutes gone. France in the lead. It has been a struggle for them but

:28:42.:28:46.

they've sort of eased their way back into this game after a very nasty

:28:47.:28:50.

period at the start of the second half. A little bit too far that

:28:51.:28:55.

kick. Lauret comes away with it. Atonio goes in.

:28:56.:29:23.

Parisse read that before anybody else.

:29:24.:29:29.

Don't need to panic, Italy, at the moment. They need a bit of

:29:30.:29:34.

possession. They haven't had possession for a lot of the last ten

:29:35.:29:36.

minutes. He thought the ball was going dead.

:29:37.:30:06.

The chase wasn't on. It could be on here.

:30:07.:30:20.

Castrogiovanni, tackled by Poirot. The penalty is to Italy.

:30:21.:30:34.

Good tackle. Discipline is important now. There is the great Serge

:30:35.:30:55.

Blanco. Luke McLean. This is to give Italy a line-out. How deep into the

:30:56.:31:07.

French half? Jefferson Poirot. Cap number one. This is Danty and on for

:31:08.:31:19.

France Flanquart. It is Paul Jedrasiak who goes off. It's very

:31:20.:31:29.

important Italy mail this line-out with eight minutes to go and two

:31:30.:31:33.

points behind. Maintaining possession is absolutely crucial.

:31:34.:31:47.

The way they come and it's one of the workhorse performers. Canna.

:31:48.:31:57.

Canna has a chance to put Italy back in the lead. Francesco Minto today,

:31:58.:32:05.

Carlo. There he is. He has been exceptional and his workrate has

:32:06.:32:11.

been unreal. He's playing the best I think I've seen him since his

:32:12.:32:16.

comeback from injury with his neck. He's maintaining possession and

:32:17.:32:20.

going into ruck after ruck, maintaining his tackles, first at

:32:21.:32:25.

the breakdown, absolute workhorse. He's looking at that decision on the

:32:26.:32:30.

television and thinking it is not a penalty. He was supporting him with

:32:31.:32:36.

his own body weight and that is what the decision is for. Not Canna,

:32:37.:32:40.

Kelly Haimona is going to take the kick. He puts his head in his hands.

:32:41.:32:44.

He has not got a great kick. He puts his head in his hands.

:32:45.:32:53.

Canna, may be. I don't know! Canna was receiving treatment, and still

:32:54.:32:57.

is, so maybe that's why he's taking the kick.

:32:58.:33:08.

It's over, it's good and Kelly Haimona looks as cool as anything.

:33:09.:33:14.

He's just put his team into the lead. France 20-21 Italy. Fantastic

:33:15.:33:23.

kick under pressure, well done, Kelly. Last year's kicking stats

:33:24.:33:29.

were not up to scratch and putting that first kick onto the plate. Here

:33:30.:33:29.

he is again, he's not afraid that first kick onto the plate. Here

:33:30.:33:36.

physical side of things, Haimona. The tackle by Camara. Parisse was

:33:37.:33:43.

back on his feet and he was tackled in another close decision. He is

:33:44.:33:55.

going for gold, I think. Jules Plisson looked at JP Doyle. I think

:33:56.:34:02.

he's looking at Jean-Marc Doussain who is about to come on. May be

:34:03.:34:06.

Plisson is about to be replaced and he said stay I'm taking this. He's

:34:07.:34:16.

moving the ball forward. Was he tackled? It is a high tackle. It is

:34:17.:34:24.

a high tackle and the penalty should have gone to the Italians. But he

:34:25.:34:31.

was held. This is a big kick. I suppose he is held there. That is a

:34:32.:34:41.

monster of a kick. Huge kick by Jules Plisson and France are in the

:34:42.:34:46.

lead, 23-21 and Parisse still doesn't believe it was a penalty. I

:34:47.:34:51.

thought it was a harsh decision, I thought it may have been a high

:34:52.:34:56.

tackle. This is an absolute belter of a kick. Slight misunderstanding,

:34:57.:35:05.

but I think France got away with it, Machenaud could have got in the way

:35:06.:35:09.

of the forwards but it safely back in the hands of Plisson. Parisse.

:35:10.:35:24.

Minto has to sort out the bit of static play. Castrogiovanni to

:35:25.:35:41.

Bellini. Parisse shrugs off Wenceslas Laurent's tackle.

:35:42.:35:47.

Castrogiovanni has to be careful. Gori.

:35:48.:36:01.

Canna. Haimona. He gets the ground. Here is Canna. McLean. They just

:36:02.:36:18.

need to be patient, patient and Here is Canna. McLean. They just

:36:19.:36:24.

chance might come. Scrum to Italy, time is running out for them, less

:36:25.:36:30.

than three minutes to go. Danty is in a bit of trouble. I think he's

:36:31.:36:39.

got cramp. I think Canna has got cramp as well. Good tackle by

:36:40.:36:55.

Flanquart, who has not been on long. I've been very impressed with Italy

:36:56.:37:01.

today, I have to say. Jean-Marc Doussain coming on. We all feared

:37:02.:37:03.

this might have been a rout. I Doussain coming on. We all feared

:37:04.:37:08.

thought it might have been as well but they've been exceptional, they

:37:09.:37:12.

have varied their play and I've been impressed with Italy's commitment.

:37:13.:37:17.

And the way they have thrown the ball about. Discipline was a point

:37:18.:37:24.

with France, they tried to play an expansive game but haven't had the

:37:25.:37:31.

platform to do it. There is still an opportunity, Carlo, for Italy to win

:37:32.:37:35.

this game. They've got the ball, they've got the scrum, they've got

:37:36.:37:39.

to go into the midfield and maybe try and get a penalty, or go for the

:37:40.:37:44.

drop goal. That is what they have to try and plan and orchestrate from

:37:45.:37:49.

Canna now. Canna has just gone off the field. It is strange when they

:37:50.:37:53.

might need a drop goal that he's just gone off. Haimona to control

:37:54.:37:59.

things now. Better just gone off. Haimona to control

:38:00.:38:10.

Haimona in the back client and Palazzani has come on at full-back

:38:11.:38:15.

and he's a scrum-half. He has played a lot at full-back for his club, and

:38:16.:38:22.

Luke McLean has moved to the wing. It's a shame because Canna showed

:38:23.:38:27.

what he could do with the ball. He was walking off with cramp. I think

:38:28.:38:32.

he's been the best player this afternoon. Yes, he's been very good.

:38:33.:38:38.

And it's a shame to lose him at this period of the match when you're

:38:39.:38:45.

looking for that little bit extra. Gori in the scrum, Parisse

:38:46.:38:50.

controlling it at the back, Italy looking for the penalty. The referee

:38:51.:38:56.

does not give it to them. Castrogiovanni has a little smile,

:38:57.:39:02.

as does Guillermo Guirado. 80,000 French supporters screaming for the

:39:03.:39:12.

ball to come out. JP Doyle. Italy looking for the penalty. You see, it

:39:13.:39:19.

can be a happy place. When the final whistle goes is when everyone will

:39:20.:39:26.

be happy. It's a very, very nervous place at the moment. It is. Atonio

:39:27.:39:34.

freshens up, stoops back into the scrum. One chance for Italy and that

:39:35.:39:40.

will be it, there will not be another chance for France. They've

:39:41.:39:49.

got to try and take it. Here we go. It is a massive call from JP Doyle.

:39:50.:39:58.

Anything beyond a short arm penalty, I don't think.

:39:59.:40:09.

He's having stern words with the Italian front row. They are some way

:40:10.:40:21.

off a penalty at the moment. Last chance for Italy. Here we go, 79: 30

:40:22.:40:28.

gone, in the closing seconds. It would be their first-ever win in

:40:29.:40:33.

Paris, they trailed by two points. Going nowhere. Parisse picks up.

:40:34.:40:46.

Haimona. Parisse. It has to be him, something inspired by their captain.

:40:47.:41:03.

France had to keep discipline. Gori. Castrogiovanni sets up the malt. It

:41:04.:41:07.

is too far out at the moment. For the drop goal? Yes, too far out. --

:41:08.:41:11.

sets up the maul. the drop goal? Yes, too far out. --

:41:12.:41:19.

it, Haimona knows the drop goal isn't on, they have to run. He takes

:41:20.:41:28.

contact. We are into overtime. Italy still in possession. Luke McLean.

:41:29.:41:35.

They have to use it. They've made no ground at all. France rush up in

:41:36.:41:42.

defence again. They know they are not going to compete on the floor

:41:43.:41:46.

now, France. Because they've got to be squeaky-clean. Minto sets up

:41:47.:41:54.

another drive. Italy come away with it. Are they in drop goal range?

:41:55.:42:01.

Parisse takes it off. Nobody has dropped back yet. It's too far for

:42:02.:42:12.

him, I think. Italy have to use it. REFEREE: Use it! Away they come.

:42:13.:42:25.

Minto. Edoardo Gori. Strong running still by the Italians, edging into

:42:26.:42:38.

range. Haimona is back. Not yet. The hooker. It is on the wrong side,

:42:39.:42:43.

they need to go middle. Castrogiovanni tackled by

:42:44.:42:55.

Still they come. They are ground. It is Parisse. He has

:42:56.:43:07.

missed. He has missed. Wonderful performance by Sergio Parisse. A

:43:08.:43:14.

heroic performance by the whole Italian side, but France have,

:43:15.:43:17.

through, they have squeaked their way to a win. It is France 23-21

:43:18.:43:27.

Italy. I can't understand why Parisse did it. I know Parisse is a

:43:28.:43:34.

great player. Not even close. Poor old Sergio

:43:35.:43:51.

Parisse, he was going to be the one who accepted the responsibility. I

:43:52.:43:56.

don't know why. From a tactical point of view Italy were better than

:43:57.:44:00.

France and it took a beautiful Ali great moment from Jules

:44:01.:44:01.

France and it took a beautiful Ali a kick slotted over, they can take

:44:02.:44:09.

something away from the game. France have a lot of building to do but

:44:10.:44:13.

from the Italian point of view next week and the whole of the Six

:44:14.:44:19.

Nations need to be this. STUDIO: That is perhaps not what was

:44:20.:44:27.

predicted 80 minutes ago, dramatic finish and controversial in many

:44:28.:44:28.

ways. The penalty that Italy conceded to

:44:29.:44:35.

France, which eventually earned them the victory. It wasn't an easy

:44:36.:44:39.

victory and it wasn't easy to watch, it was a nervy performance, wasn't

:44:40.:44:42.

it? And it doesn't feel like a glorious start to Guy Noves's reign.

:44:43.:44:54.

I said before the game we could not be worse than the World Cup and

:44:55.:44:58.

today we were. Italy have to take credit for their performance but as

:44:59.:45:01.

a team we did not deliver. We showed some good skills and at one stage we

:45:02.:45:06.

moved the ball well. But in the forwards, the toughness of the game,

:45:07.:45:11.

I think the back row struggled a lot, and Italy played really well. I

:45:12.:45:15.

think some of the skills were fantastic and some of the attitude

:45:16.:45:19.

and energy was very low. We will get more thoughts in a moment from you

:45:20.:45:24.

but at the touchline Lee McKenzie is there with Campagnaro.

:45:25.:45:29.

Michele is it mixed emotions because Italy played so well but just missed

:45:30.:45:34.

out on the victory? It wasn't easy for us today. France's squad is very

:45:35.:45:44.

hard to beat here at home. I think we put in the right commitment. And

:45:45.:45:51.

maybe with just something more we could go back to Italy with an

:45:52.:45:56.

important one today. Today is disappointing. What please view the

:45:57.:46:01.

most about Italy's performance? Where were you the strongest? Right

:46:02.:46:08.

now we try to dominate with our scrum. And we have a lot of good

:46:09.:46:16.

players, important players, with very good experience. So, I mean,

:46:17.:46:23.

the scrum is very important for us. Bad luck today and well

:46:24.:46:28.

the scrum is very important for us. STUDIO: Company are along with Gori

:46:29.:46:31.

and Canna, great performances from those individuals and Parisse was so

:46:32.:46:36.

many times the hero. This is the penalty that the game hung on. He

:46:37.:46:39.

thought he would earn the penalty for Italy. He did, there was a clip

:46:40.:46:45.

across the side of the head but I thought he ducked into it and the

:46:46.:46:49.

referee got it right, he held on and was pulled over at the end and he

:46:50.:46:53.

could not hold on. Look at this, 54 metres, incredible kick and it

:46:54.:46:58.

sailed over from Plisson. Just before that they wanted to replace

:46:59.:47:03.

Plisson and he wanted to take the kick, unbelievable. I wanted to say

:47:04.:47:08.

something on Italy. Zebre and Treviso has been very poor in the

:47:09.:47:11.

Champions Cup and really poor and have been dreadful in the Pro12 and

:47:12.:47:14.

that is an incredible performance from players who are not playing at

:47:15.:47:18.

a high standard. But when they put on the blue Jersey they seem to give

:47:19.:47:22.

a bit more. I thought they played much better and have unearthed a

:47:23.:47:25.

couple of great players from the youth team. Canna in particular, to

:47:26.:47:29.

come in with no experience at this level of test rugby in a cauldron

:47:30.:47:34.

like here at the Stade de France was fantastic. Intuitive, creative, and

:47:35.:47:40.

if you can get his playing sorted out -- kicking sorted out you have a

:47:41.:47:46.

player. When he started playing with confidence I thought he was

:47:47.:47:50.

fantastic. Along with the whole Italian team I thought they probably

:47:51.:47:55.

deserved to win. He found his kicking boots early in the second

:47:56.:47:56.

half and kicking boots early in the second

:47:57.:47:59.

confidence and then he got an individual try. Even if he didn't

:48:00.:48:03.

start the game well because he missed important kicks then he

:48:04.:48:06.

managed to come back and I think he was helped by the French back row

:48:07.:48:09.

who didn't put enough pressure on him. He managed to get into the game

:48:10.:48:14.

and run and create gaps in the French defence which was not really

:48:15.:48:18.

reactive. He had a purple patch of about three minutes when everything

:48:19.:48:22.

seemed to go right for him and there was this perfect line. There was a

:48:23.:48:26.

bit of a gap. Chouly was very important today. I didn't like the

:48:27.:48:30.

way he played and he was slow getting back, he ran the offside

:48:31.:48:34.

line. In fairness to Canna he knew exactly what he had to do and picked

:48:35.:48:40.

out the player to shepherd him all the way back over. You could see the

:48:41.:48:44.

high catch, Chouly should not have been there and been back far sooner

:48:45.:48:49.

and blocked Canna. Big game for Italy having Sergio Parisse back

:48:50.:48:53.

today. He was missed in the World Cup. He had 21 carries in that game,

:48:54.:48:58.

twice any of his team-mates and Italy look like a team that will not

:48:59.:49:02.

be a walkover in the Six Nations and they were unlucky today. You hope

:49:03.:49:05.

they play with that same spirit. This is the first game of the Six

:49:06.:49:08.

Nations and you would think everybody would be excited and you

:49:09.:49:11.

need to continue and play like that for the rest of the tournament. Do

:49:12.:49:17.

France have a star in Vakatawa? Do you feel on didn't about his 15 man

:49:18.:49:23.

game? Every time he gets the ball he can be a danger but now he needs to

:49:24.:49:26.

fit in with the others. It is a poor performance from France today and I

:49:27.:49:30.

cannot believe we are at this level. I thought at the start of the game

:49:31.:49:33.

we could do much better but today we didn't deliver and I'm concerned

:49:34.:49:37.

about that. With all of that said and done France got a win and France

:49:38.:49:41.

looked demoralised after the World Cup and things didn't go well for

:49:42.:49:45.

them at all. They got a win but they were poor and lacklustre. Plenty of

:49:46.:49:49.

rugby coming your way this weekend and we are live from Murrayfield

:49:50.:49:53.

where Eddie Jones will take over England for the first time against

:49:54.:49:57.

Scotland. Tomorrow you can hear live commentary of Ireland's game against

:49:58.:50:02.

Wales on Radio 5 live and highlights on the programme at 7pm on BBC Two,

:50:03.:50:08.

and scrum five in Wales. My thanks to Matt, Thomas and Keith. Guy Noves

:50:09.:50:15.

has met journey is about to begin soon. We will see you soon.

:50:16.:50:19.

The start of the 2016 Six Nations. That is such a classy finish. France

:50:20.:50:28.

are in the lead. Italy power their way over, try for Italy. France 10-8

:50:29.:50:39.

Italy. Carlo Canna scores! This is an absolute belter of a kick.

:50:40.:50:43.
