Travelling. It is part of our make up. Our DNA. The desire to

:01:00.:01:08.

experience new countries and cultures. The desire to meet people.

:01:09.:01:14.

Find out about their world. And tell them about yours. It has been the

:01:15.:01:20.

same for centuries and it is the same now. And when you are

:01:21.:01:24.

confronted by a new world, for all the things which are so different,

:01:25.:01:31.

the sites, the sounds, the smells, there is a reassuring comfort that

:01:32.:01:35.

really we are actually quite similar.

:01:36.:01:40.

We all want to go faster, fly higher, be stronger. To face a

:01:41.:01:49.

challenge head on and conquer whatever man and nature confronts us

:01:50.:01:51.

with. In two years' time that challenge

:01:52.:02:05.

will be bigger than ever when South Korea host the next winter Olympics.

:02:06.:02:16.

New World, same age old conundrum, racer versus the mountain. Fastest

:02:17.:02:21.

wins. Well, to the Jeongseon ski area

:02:22.:02:35.

South Korea. Well, to the Jeongseon ski area

:02:36.:02:44.

the Alpine speed events in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. This

:02:45.:02:48.

week it is the venue for the World Cup downhill test event, the fastest

:02:49.:02:52.

racers in the world are here to get their first look at the place they

:02:53.:02:57.

will be contesting for gold in 2018. And while we are here we will look

:02:58.:03:00.

at some of the other Olympic venues to see how preparations are going

:03:01.:03:04.

ahead of South Korea's biggest sporting event since the World Cup

:03:05.:03:10.

in 2002. And we will reminisce about a moment which put snowboarding on

:03:11.:03:14.

the map at the Winter Olympics. Can you believe it is ten years since

:03:15.:03:22.

this? But first it is time for the men's downhill from Jeongseon and

:03:23.:03:26.

it's not just the race is getting their first look at the Olympic

:03:27.:03:31.

track, Graham Bell has been inspecting the track and it has

:03:32.:03:38.

brought back a few memories. Of the five Olympic Games I competed in,

:03:39.:03:42.

none of them were regular stops on the World Cup tour which is why

:03:43.:03:47.

these test events are so important. It comes down to fighting it out

:03:48.:03:51.

medals and everyone has a similar level of experience on the track,

:03:52.:03:55.

maybe that is why so many of the men's downhill Abby won by surprise

:03:56.:03:57.

winners. -- are wonderful by. This course designed by the 1972

:03:58.:04:16.

Olympic downhill champion. We have one rule, it is 800 metres vertical.

:04:17.:04:24.

But aside from that, you have to find the right difficulty, jumps,

:04:25.:04:29.

turns, speed, whatever. The balance of that makes the course interesting

:04:30.:04:34.

and good. It was a question of finding the mountain. Yes, we had a

:04:35.:04:40.

lot of problems finding out and which was 800 vertical metres. This

:04:41.:04:43.

was one of the only ones which was feasible. How does the course

:04:44.:04:52.

compare to the one you won on in 1972? You are right, this could be

:04:53.:04:59.

close to it. I forgot! When you have a course like this course inspection

:05:00.:05:02.

is really important, the racers will get an hour and a half to study

:05:03.:05:07.

every single lump, bump, turn and jump. There's a lie shisha and is

:05:08.:05:12.

the key, but it is more than what it looks like, you have to imagine how

:05:13.:05:17.

it would feel when you ski it. You will go down a section and remember

:05:18.:05:21.

it, remember how it will be so that when you get to the bottom you have

:05:22.:05:27.

the whole thing in your head. It all looks rather different at 80 mph

:05:28.:05:31.

which is why there are always two training runs before the big day.

:05:32.:05:36.

However I only get one shot at it. Beautiful view from the top of the

:05:37.:05:38.

course. As you go out the start pretty much

:05:39.:05:39.

get straight into a really Just have to try and get the speed

:05:40.:05:42.

to carry on to this first jump. Setting up now for

:05:43.:05:53.

the panorama turn. That brings you down

:05:54.:06:10.

towards jump three. Not much imagination

:06:11.:06:16.

in the naming of these jumps! Heading down now towards

:06:17.:06:19.

the Blue Dragon Valley. Come over a little rise,

:06:20.:06:31.

and you enter this gully. Bursting out of Blue

:06:32.:06:34.

Dragon Valley and heading Can see the Magic Tree

:06:35.:06:38.

on the left of the course. All of these turns, you have to be

:06:39.:06:47.

so precise on your edge. Well, you really cannot afford

:06:48.:06:50.

to make any mistakes on that course. Because it just keeps

:06:51.:07:04.

turning all the way down. There is some massive air,

:07:05.:07:07.

particularly on the last jump. There are quite a lot of turns, the

:07:08.:07:20.

jumps are big but right now on the right side of big which means it is

:07:21.:07:25.

spectacular but still safe. I am sure that they must do something

:07:26.:07:30.

different because downhill, you must go 130, 140, 150, 160. Here when you

:07:31.:07:39.

see the speed it is 96. The jumps are OK but the speed is not OK. It

:07:40.:07:45.

is good to come somewhere where the sun is out. It's about time. Very

:07:46.:07:51.

mixed reviews from the racers, what is your opinion? To be brutally

:07:52.:07:57.

honest this is the easiest course since Sarajevo 84 that I raced when

:07:58.:08:02.

I was 18. They could make it more difficult if the injected with water

:08:03.:08:07.

and make it bumpier and straight the line but by making it faster they

:08:08.:08:10.

will make it shorter and you could come in at less than a minute and a

:08:11.:08:16.

half. I would rather have something which is short and fast under test

:08:17.:08:20.

than what we have right now. Constructive criticism is one thing

:08:21.:08:23.

but it will take a positive mental attitude to win rather than

:08:24.:08:29.

negativity. You can only race what you are put up against. Christoph

:08:30.:08:36.

likes the downhill to be steep and icy and dangerous and this is not

:08:37.:08:41.

that. Whoever wins today how much of a boost for that be in terms of

:08:42.:08:47.

confidence? It will help but two years is a long time in ski racing.

:08:48.:08:56.

There are a couple of racers out who I think in two years' time will be a

:08:57.:09:03.

threat on the course. Big vacancy at the top of the podium. It was filled

:09:04.:09:12.

last week by his Norwegian team-mate Alexander but I am not sure this

:09:13.:09:17.

course will suit him. I think the threat will come from the Italians

:09:18.:09:26.

again. Always the Italians! The odds-on favourite has had bad luck

:09:27.:09:30.

this season, a lot of weather problems but the weather is good and

:09:31.:09:33.

he's won bought the training runs so it could be time for his luck to

:09:34.:09:40.

turn. Time for the maiden running of the PyeongChang downhill.

:09:41.:09:48.

COMMENTATOR: This is the first test event. Trying to

:09:49.:09:57.

Flies miles off the second jump, winding the windows down. He has got

:09:58.:10:24.

the red light. Winding his way down this Olympic

:10:25.:10:42.

track. Another huge flight from the Austrian.

:10:43.:10:50.

Nice in a dynamic position. -- aerodynamic.

:10:51.:11:02.

He is faring well because he's got the green light.

:11:03.:11:09.

Skiing the bottom half of the track beautifully well.

:11:10.:11:15.

Still has the green light. But it's going to be desperately close. Can

:11:16.:11:29.

he take the lead? He can! Able to pick up speed on the low part of the

:11:30.:11:33.

course, cutting off the line on the right-hander as he came past magic

:11:34.:11:38.

tree and that was the difference. Went a shorter route, took some

:11:39.:11:39.

risks and it paid off. The overall World Cup champion in

:11:40.:11:52.

2009, 2000 ten. Three World Cup downhill wins to his name. The last

:11:53.:11:59.

six years ago. He's been on the podium this season. Third a couple

:12:00.:12:09.

of weeks ago. He is going well. The right side of the clock. Nice and

:12:10.:12:13.

tidy off the second jump. Again through the bumpy Traverse. He

:12:14.:12:35.

is one 100th of a second inside the time of the leader. Can Switzerland

:12:36.:12:39.

take it away from Austria? Just asked to check a little bit up

:12:40.:12:53.

to the right-hand side. The time is still good. Not much to choose

:12:54.:13:01.

between the top down hurlers in the world at the moment.

:13:02.:13:07.

Still green. Going to have to be clean off the last jump. Just

:13:08.:13:26.

outside! I think the difference was the way he took the last jump. Not

:13:27.:13:31.

compact enough in the air and that can make the difference, those small

:13:32.:13:35.

things can cost you hundreds of a second and that was the difference.

:13:36.:13:41.

The youngest of the attacking the Vikings is a talented footballer.

:13:42.:13:53.

Coming off the back of his maiden downhill win last weekend. He has

:13:54.:14:08.

lost his ski! Loses the left, but what strength to stay on his feet.

:14:09.:14:13.

Shaking his head but that is a heart stopping moment for the youngster.

:14:14.:14:19.

Showing his strength and balance to stand up on one leg in perhaps the

:14:20.:14:28.

toughest section of the course. He did not have as much weight as he

:14:29.:14:31.

perhaps should have done on his outside ski when it came off but

:14:32.:14:36.

binding should not be coming off like that. It is a toss-up between

:14:37.:14:41.

doing it too tight and they don't release in a crash or having them

:14:42.:14:45.

loose and that sometimes happens. It is part of the sport. The American

:14:46.:14:55.

to go. Six World Cup downhill podium is to his name. Three wins, 2006,

:14:56.:15:01.

2011 and 20 14. Had a big jump OfficeMax is bumpy

:15:02.:15:41.

traverse and deals with it well. Lovely skiing. He is poor for and

:15:42.:15:46.

three of a second inside the time of his rival. Lovely skiing from Nyman,

:15:47.:15:59.

looking nice and compact. Not the quickest into Blue Dragon Valley but

:16:00.:16:15.

the clock says he is inside the time of Striedinger. He's got every

:16:16.:16:21.

chance to take the lead, a slight mistake before the finish but has he

:16:22.:16:27.

done enough to overtake Striedinger? He has!

:16:28.:16:32.

Nyman taking the lead, not the best technical skier, key can make some

:16:33.:16:41.

turns and yet look horrendous, but what he does well is, he stays loose

:16:42.:16:48.

and relaxed and does nothing to slow down. This course is perfect for

:16:49.:17:00.

somebody with his skills. The first of the top skiers leaves the start

:17:01.:17:06.

at. Already a winner on the World Cup this season in downhill. He won

:17:07.:17:12.

the Santa Catarina Downhill and he's quick at the top. He's inside the

:17:13.:17:28.

time of Stephen Nyman. The Frenchman skiing nicely. Gets a little untidy

:17:29.:17:34.

off the jump, winding down the windows. Could that affect his split

:17:35.:17:48.

at intermediate three? 54.3 is the time he missed a beat. It has not

:17:49.:17:54.

affected him too much, two 100th of a second. Almost carrying the entire

:17:55.:18:02.

slope and landing on the flat, Theaux. Into Blue Dragon Valley. The

:18:03.:18:11.

next split coming as he exits. He is now outside the time by just over

:18:12.:18:19.

one quarter of a second. Work to be done by Theaux in the closing turns.

:18:20.:18:29.

He has lost another one tenth of a second. I don't think it's going to

:18:30.:18:36.

be his day here in Korea. And he's outside by one quarter of a second.

:18:37.:18:42.

Theaux just a little too hard on his edges in that right-hander after you

:18:43.:18:50.

come past Magic Tree. The second last turn on the course. He's a good

:18:51.:18:55.

technical skier but he likes it when the course is steeper than this. You

:18:56.:18:57.

must be so precise on this course. Dominik Paris leaving be start hut.

:18:58.:19:17.

He came fourth in the end. His last podium on the downhill came last

:19:18.:19:21.

season when he came second in the last of his three downhill wins was

:19:22.:19:37.

at Lake Louise back in 2013. He does a good job on the terms, clatters

:19:38.:19:41.

the control gate and runs a little wide as a result. He got pushed a

:19:42.:19:52.

little low on that bumpy traverse. He is 61 hundredths of a second

:19:53.:19:59.

wrong side of a clock, still a possibility for Paris but there is

:20:00.:20:10.

work to be done. Into this icy chute they call Bessemer Micro. He hasn't

:20:11.:20:20.

-- they call Blue Dragon Valley. He hasn't enjoyed the bottom part of

:20:21.:20:26.

this downhill track. He's got a bit of time back, will it be enough? Can

:20:27.:20:35.

Dominik Paris take it away from my Mum! Pick-up! Excellent skiing! .

:20:36.:20:46.

You can he take it away from Nyman? That was excellent skiing, difficult

:20:47.:20:50.

to say where he picked it up, he's very loose and relaxed, and in this

:20:51.:20:55.

turns after the Magic Tree he was able to gain a little extra speed

:20:56.:20:57.

and carry that to the line. In the start-up is the Olympic

:20:58.:21:09.

champion, you've got to feel for his team-mate, even with the champion

:21:10.:21:21.

outcome he still gets beaten. Jansrud's home form has been dodgy

:21:22.:21:24.

but don't write him off, he's looking to put down a marker on this

:21:25.:21:31.

new slope. The Norwegian, Jansrud, leaving the start hut. Last year's

:21:32.:21:38.

downhill champion coming he has five downhill wins to his name, the last

:21:39.:21:42.

game in America at the end of last season. Two podiums this season and

:21:43.:21:52.

he's quick at the top, Jansrud. Set the fastest times in training. The

:21:53.:22:02.

quickest was 1.41.1 eight. Anything near that and he'll have a chance of

:22:03.:22:06.

the first victory of the season. Lovely off the jump, so compact. He

:22:07.:22:14.

hasn't had the best of luck in the last couple of downhills. He got

:22:15.:22:22.

done by the weather, and then there snow came to slow down the track and

:22:23.:22:26.

another time he had to wait while his friend was picked out of the

:22:27.:22:35.

nets. He hasn't been on top form but here in Korea he seems to have got

:22:36.:22:45.

his mojo back. The clock in join his skiing. Paris's time, Jansrud is

:22:46.:22:54.

just inside the time of the Italian. Could this be yet another Norwegian

:22:55.:23:01.

victory on the men's World Cup? They have dominated the World Cup this

:23:02.:23:05.

year, Norway. And Jansrud is looking good to set the fastest time. Oh,

:23:06.:23:15.

yes! 0.2 of a second inside. Great skiing from Jansrud. He pretty much

:23:16.:23:20.

put his sticks under his arms and held on all the way through these

:23:21.:23:25.

technical turns, he was tucking and yet still very clean and relaxed.

:23:26.:23:30.

Brilliant in the air and through the turns. That will be a tough time to

:23:31.:23:44.

beat. The Italian is a veteran yet puts down his success to getting

:23:45.:23:52.

married. Peter Phil is the next to leave the start hut.

:23:53.:24:04.

His second World Cup downhill win, his first was at Lake Louise back in

:24:05.:24:10.

November 2000 and eight. A big-time gap. -- in November 20 08. He was

:24:11.:24:24.

second in the first downhill of this season in Lake Louise but he isn't

:24:25.:24:30.

enjoying race day here in Korea. He said the second-fastest time in

:24:31.:24:36.

training, and he is going to have to go faster than that to overtake

:24:37.:24:48.

Jansrud. 0.79, surely that is too much for Peter Fill to claw back on

:24:49.:24:51.

the bottom half of this Olympic downhill track?

:24:52.:24:59.

The speed gun is kind to him going into Blue Dragon Valley. You can see

:25:00.:25:07.

the green light. What does it do to his time? Not a great deal because

:25:08.:25:12.

he is still three quarters of a second off the pace of Jansrud.

:25:13.:25:24.

1.31.6, the last time check we have before the finish. And Fill winds

:25:25.:25:30.

down the windows of the last jump. It won't be his day.

:25:31.:25:35.

Peter Fill not happy with fourth place. That shows how well he's

:25:36.:25:42.

skiing. He just didn't get the speed going from the start and did not

:25:43.:25:45.

carry the speed from the steep section down to the lower, flat

:25:46.:25:53.

parts of the course. This was lightning bolt is back from injury

:25:54.:25:57.

and has been on the podium twice in recent weeks. He won the test event

:25:58.:26:02.

before the Sochi Olympics four years ago, could lightning strike twice?

:26:03.:26:12.

Feuz from Switzerland is next. Only his fourth downhill in the World Cup

:26:13.:26:17.

this year. He comes back from injury although he has been pretty

:26:18.:26:31.

impressive. He was 11th in Wengen. He has had three World Cup wins in

:26:32.:26:35.

his career, the last one was at such a before the last Winter Olympics.

:26:36.:26:44.

But the last one was at Sochi. He won't want his time to grow if he

:26:45.:26:53.

can help it. Celebrating his birthday next Friday, can he give

:26:54.:27:00.

himself an early birthday present and find a podium finish in Korea?

:27:01.:27:08.

Probably not because 0.82 is a massive gap and Feuz has got a lot

:27:09.:27:11.

of work to do on the bottom half of this downhill track if he is to

:27:12.:27:20.

claw-back that time. Not bad into the Blue Dragon Valley. And he's

:27:21.:27:28.

clawed a little bit of time back on Jansrud but still a lot of work for

:27:29.:27:39.

the Swiss racer to do. 1.31.6, at the last time check, now the gap is

:27:40.:27:45.

0.4 nine. Can Feuz find speed on the last pitch to make the podium? He

:27:46.:27:52.

can't. He goes fifth. An interesting jump from Feuz, slightly twisting in

:27:53.:27:56.

the air, you didn't panic and still had his hands tucked behind his

:27:57.:28:01.

knees. It was slightly sideways on as he landed and then straight on

:28:02.:28:06.

his edges and into the turn, great skiing. Jansrud takes his first

:28:07.:28:13.

downhill cup win of the season. Season best finishes also for Paris

:28:14.:28:24.

and Nyman. Norway keep winning! Amazing.

:28:25.:28:28.

It's good to keep the Norwegian tradition and get another win. What

:28:29.:28:36.

must you do to be fast on the course? It's of course you must be

:28:37.:28:42.

clever on. There's a lot of to rain and you have to know what direction

:28:43.:28:45.

you are going in, you have to be really loose and clean on the edge.

:28:46.:28:50.

But you can be dynamic and generate speed which is nice because it is

:28:51.:28:56.

super responsive, clean snow. How are you enjoying Korea? It's a lot

:28:57.:29:03.

of fun, actually. It exceeds my expectations. People have been super

:29:04.:29:09.

nice to me. I went into town the other day, me, and another guy who

:29:10.:29:13.

is taller than me and it was kind of funny with small doors, we towered

:29:14.:29:18.

over everyone! Just kind of learning the ways, exploring the markets and

:29:19.:29:25.

the food. It's pretty fun. Norway have never won and Olympic men's

:29:26.:29:29.

downhill, is it too early to write Norway on the gold medal? I think

:29:30.:29:35.

it's too early. It is two years, a lot can happen. I would rather have

:29:36.:29:40.

this funny bad run through so I'm happy with today. And rather have

:29:41.:29:47.

this than a bad run through. Thank you. A dominant victory in the

:29:48.:29:55.

women's downhill yesterday. The World Cup leader Lindsay Yvonne won.

:29:56.:30:06.

Billie Morgan of Britain took an excellent fifth in Innsbruck with

:30:11.:30:16.

his final jump. His Canadian rival took the win. At the aerial skiing

:30:17.:30:24.

World Cup in Deer Valley University of Bath student Lloyd Wallace

:30:25.:30:28.

produced two personal bests and finished seventh. And Italy's

We thought we would take a look around and see how the other venues

:30:56.:30:58.

are shaping up. Welcome to the PyeongChang official

:30:59.:31:14.

venue tour. We are going to the venue for all be extreme sports. The

:31:15.:31:26.

freestyle venue, come on. First impressions this is a very good

:31:27.:31:31.

venue, you have the slopes up here which will be converted just as they

:31:32.:31:35.

were in Russia into the ski cross and snowboard cross track then you

have got next door, and the half pipe, they all share the same finish

area so you get a lovely amphitheatre which will be a great

:31:46.:31:49.

atmosphere. But all of this snow is artificial. They are making hundreds

:31:50.:31:55.

of tonnes of it and the size of this in front of us, it looks promising.

:31:56.:32:00.

Fingers crossed they can make some good snow for the half pipe. That

:32:01.:32:05.

will be key to the legacy because in Canada and Russia they wear low

:32:06.:32:13.

quality half pipes. This is probably where we will have our best shot at

:32:14.:32:18.

a medal, where all it's most likely come from? Billie Morgan in

:32:19.:32:27.

slopestyle. Katie Ormerod is rarely starting to hit her stride. So much

:32:28.:32:34.

strength in the British freestyle team, it is really exciting.

:32:35.:32:41.

We visited Vancouver and Russia in the build-up to the games they are

:32:42.:32:47.

and it is the same for every host city, a vast amount of

:32:48.:32:51.

infrastructure needs to be built. Roads, tunnels and bridges. When you

:32:52.:32:55.

see the work like this you realise how much there is to be done in

:32:56.:33:04.

solid full-time. -- in so little time. A new event for 2018 is the

:33:05.:33:10.

snowboard big air but they have not put it with the other events in

:33:11.:33:13.

Gangneung, they have put it that the ski jump venue. They will use the

:33:14.:33:20.

:33:21.:33:28.

person to land a quadruple Cork rotation last year and with that in

:33:29.:33:31.

his arsenal he is a definite contender for an Olympic medal here

:33:32.:33:39.

in 2018. At the sliding Centre is an event Britain excels, since its

:33:40.:33:43.

reintroduction in 2002 Britain has won a medal in each of the skeleton

:33:44.:33:49.

events. All eyes will be on Lizzie Arnold to see if she can become the

:33:50.:33:53.

first person to claim back-to-back Olympic titles. Other new venues are

:33:54.:34:02.

the spur need skating oval and a short track and bigger skating

:34:03.:34:09.

arena. Ice-skating is big business in South Korea.

:34:10.:34:20.

The weight of expectation on the successors will be competing in this

:34:21.:34:29.

arena and will be huge. The majority of the host nations Olympic medals

:34:30.:34:33.

have come in short track speed skating so we can expect a great

:34:34.:34:38.

atmosphere. Hoping to spoil the party and make up for her trouble

:34:39.:34:43.

disappointment in 2014 will be Elise Christie who just became overall

:34:44.:34:47.

European short track speed skating champion. From the station to series

:34:48.:34:52.

about a five-minute drive and here to hear is about ten minutes. Time

:34:53.:34:58.

to show you one more venue, or at least pointed out, the Carling

:34:59.:35:01.

Centre is tucked away behind this football stadium -- curling centre.

:35:02.:35:11.

Plans are well underway but there was no mention on the tour of the

:35:12.:35:14.

environmental costs to the local area. Conservationists have said

:35:15.:35:23.

over 78 Hector 's of ancient forest was destroyed by the organisers have

:35:24.:35:27.

said they will plant more than a thousand trees. But the big question

:35:28.:35:31.

has to be Will there be an appetite for winter sport after the Olympics

:35:32.:35:35.

in a country which all Morrissey 's 37 centimetres of natural snow each

:35:36.:35:43.

winter? -- which only receives 37 centimetres. We have witnessed a lot

:35:44.:35:49.

of youngsters enjoying skiing and snowboarding. But the question is

:35:50.:35:55.

can it be as good as Calgary? Only time will tell. It is two years away

:35:56.:36:03.

but I'm already looking forward to PyeongChang 2018. The Winter

:36:04.:36:08.

Olympics are such a big event and the medals are so valuable because

:36:09.:36:11.

they are only available every four years. The winners are immortalised

:36:12.:36:16.

in history and the losers generally forgotten. But that is not always

:36:17.:36:23.

the case. We looked back at a game changing moment which happened ten

:36:24.:36:24.

years ago into them -- in Turin. Two of the most anticipated Olympic

:36:25.:36:42.

disciplines and for good reason as the ruthless and often chaotic

:36:43.:36:46.

battle for gold always proves. But it hasn't always been that way. Ten

:36:47.:36:53.

years ago at the 2006 games in Turin boardercross was a brand-new Olympic

:36:54.:36:57.

sport. Nobody knew what to expect and for some including the head of

:36:58.:37:01.

skiing 's governing body it was considered a joke. Over the double

:37:02.:37:07.

down, into the toilet bowl. But it had been around for a while, part of

:37:08.:37:15.

the X games since 1997. But it was not taken that seriously, it was the

:37:16.:37:20.

first time I had worked for the BBC and I was aware of just how

:37:21.:37:24.

different I was and the sports I was covering where. I wanted to do them

:37:25.:37:29.

justice, I was determined to see them succeed at the games. People

:37:30.:37:37.

started to take notice, how could you not? Boardercross was simple and

:37:38.:37:45.

spectacular. What a race! In the build-up to the women's final I

:37:46.:37:50.

thought it was a one horse race, I had mentally given away the gold

:37:51.:37:54.

already, the clear favourite who had won the X games three times in a row

:37:55.:37:58.

and demolished every race in the build-up to the final. I thought it

:37:59.:38:05.

was a race for solver. I was right, kind of. But my fears of it being a

:38:06.:38:09.

dull race could not be more around -- race for silver. -- could not be

:38:10.:38:13.

more wrong. Going to struggle to get the speed,

:38:14.:38:27.

looking very sure now to make it one, two, three for America. Going

:38:28.:38:36.

straight through the fence! Seemingly uncatchable as she comes

:38:37.:38:44.

through! This is a lap of honour! Drama! She is down! This is

:38:45.:38:48.

incredible! I can understand if you thought I

:38:49.:38:59.

was over the top in my commentary but you cannot prepare rehearse for

:39:00.:39:03.

a moment like that. I simply couldn't believe what I was seeing.

:39:04.:39:08.

She has thrown a gold medal away in the last hundred metres. It's not an

:39:09.:39:14.

overstatement to say that final change things for the freestyle

:39:15.:39:18.

disciplines. It was played over and over again and boardercross's

:39:19.:39:22.

success meant the Olympic family of freestyle discipline group. 2010 saw

:39:23.:39:28.

the introduction of ski cross and I think everyone remembers it impact.

:39:29.:39:33.

Then in 2014 we got slopestyle which gave Britain its first medal on

:39:34.:39:41.

snow. And now in 2018 we have the introduction of snowboarding big

:39:42.:39:44.

air. Across that span we have seen is now boarding go from something

:39:45.:39:48.

which was culturally on the margins, and niche, underground sport to

:39:49.:39:51.

something which is now mainstream in the extreme. For some this has come

:39:52.:39:57.

at the price of the sport 's identity but on the plus side there

:39:58.:40:01.

are millions of people who have taken up free skiing and

:40:02.:40:03.

snowboarding who would not have discovered them otherwise were it

:40:04.:40:08.

not for the Olympics. You would be forgiving thinking that would be the

:40:09.:40:13.

end of her career, how do you come back from a disappointment like

:40:14.:40:19.

that? She did, she won the X games again, her third in a row and won

:40:20.:40:24.

the World Championships last year. But there is still a gaping hole in

:40:25.:40:35.

what is an otherwise glittering CV, even if she comes to PyeongChang and

:40:36.:40:42.

wins which seems likely, she will always be the girl who threw away an

:40:43.:40:44.

Olympic gold. Before we go it is time for ski

:40:45.:40:53.

social and we will kick off with some of your videos. We have got

:40:54.:40:58.

lots of clips from different types of terrain.

:40:59.:41:09.

We have seen the youth coming to the fore. Barney aged just two.

:41:10.:41:25.

Jim and John, veteran is at the grand old age of seven. But watch

:41:26.:41:33.

out parents, these cute kids turn into grumpy teenagers. Oh my god, I

:41:34.:41:41.

hate you. I hated my brother as well. That is because he always beat

:41:42.:41:50.

you. We have had some questions, particularly about how this jump

:41:51.:41:54.

should have been landed. Wait forward! Lastly, what is meant when

:41:55.:42:01.

the ski instructor says Bend your ankles. What you try to do is flex

:42:02.:42:07.

board into the front of your books, I think about having a great town

:42:08.:42:13.

near you want to crush. Or think about it as using the joint between

:42:14.:42:18.

your foot and leg. Another question with the push on powder should he be

:42:19.:42:26.

ditching his day to day right? Retro boards are nostalgic, powder boards

:42:27.:42:30.

have their place but for ago capabilities. Great for building a

:42:31.:42:36.

clever but not as a daily ride. Amy wants to know how Slaven scares can

:42:37.:42:41.

get their hands down on the snow when the arm aching turns. They have

:42:42.:42:45.

got such angular movement in their hips that they are down like this.

:42:46.:42:52.

That gives them extra balance. Finally we have had an engagement on

:42:53.:42:57.

the slopes. Tom popping the question to Andrea. I like how she was still

:42:58.:43:03.

strapped into her snowboard. Quick getaway? Keep sending in your photos

:43:04.:43:09.

videos and questions. And fortunately that's all we have time

:43:10.:43:13.

for but we will be back in Europe next week for the women's downhill.
