Hello and welcome to Chamonix, this weekend, this is the venue for the

:00:52.:01:00.

fastest men on the mountain. They will be racing in the shadow of Mont

:01:01.:01:04.

blanc and the home fans will be cheering on the French team. But the

:01:05.:01:08.

origins of the Kandahar ski race started on the other side of the

:01:09.:01:14.

channel. The British love affair with sport goes back centuries. Our

:01:15.:01:18.

country's passion for rules and regulations is just as timeless.

:01:19.:01:25.

Skiing was not so much a sport as a means of getting around. That was

:01:26.:01:28.

before the British tried it and loved it. Soon, the Kandahar Ski

:01:29.:01:34.

Club had written the rules of two new disciplines, slalom and

:01:35.:01:39.

downhill. In 1931, the first-ever skiing World Championships took

:01:40.:01:43.

place. The rule book was written by the British and British names were

:01:44.:01:48.

entered into the history books. It was an enrichment, Sir Arnold Love,

:01:49.:01:52.

who persuaded the Olympic Committee to accept ski racing into the

:01:53.:01:55.

competition schedule. But then, the Alpine nations had mastered the

:01:56.:02:00.

British rules and make the sport their own. We might have written the

:02:01.:02:05.

rule book, organise the committee and taken the minutes but

:02:06.:02:09.

unfortunately, British names were absent from the Hall of Fame. But we

:02:10.:02:21.

didn't turn our back on snow. Giving up, that is just not British. We

:02:22.:02:30.

have challenged the establishment. We have tasted glory only to have it

:02:31.:02:34.

cruelly taken away. And for better or worse, we do love it. British

:02:35.:02:42.

athletes have never been content to make up the numbers and now, they

:02:43.:02:49.

are contenders. After all, London to the Alps is not that far and when we

:02:50.:02:53.

get here, we have proved we can flourish. Once British sport was all

:02:54.:03:00.

about writing the rules and making sure the athletes blazers fitted.

:03:01.:03:07.

Now, things are a little different. Now there is a new generation of UK

:03:08.:03:12.

talent who have the backing and potential to write their names in

:03:13.:03:13.

the history books. Chamonix of course has a heritage

:03:14.:03:31.

all its own. The first host of the Winter Olympics in 1924. It is a

:03:32.:03:36.

regular stop for the World Cup and the freeride world tour. Which make

:03:37.:03:41.

our features this week more appropriate. After the racing we

:03:42.:03:44.

have a report from the winter youth Olympics in Lillehammer. Jenny Jones

:03:45.:03:49.

has caught up with our British gold medal winner. New champion, Madi

:03:50.:03:59.

Rowlands. Well done. How does that feel? I am so happy. And we bring

:04:00.:04:05.

you the incredible story of Britain's best big mountain is no

:04:06.:04:09.

border, Sascha Hamm, his journey from London to the freeride world

:04:10.:04:13.

tour has been a very colourful one and it includes the most terrifying

:04:14.:04:17.

thing that can happen to any skier or snowboarder. I am dead. Hello.

:04:18.:04:29.

No. That really does send shivers down your spine. Thankfully, his

:04:30.:04:35.

powerful story has a happy ending. First, it is time for the downhill

:04:36.:04:40.

in Chamonix. The race bears the name, the Kandahar, a town in

:04:41.:04:45.

Afghanistan, how did the two come to share a name? It started with the

:04:46.:04:49.

Kandahar Ski Club which was founded in Murren, his main benefactor was

:04:50.:04:54.

the Earl of Kandahar, a British military commander. They started

:04:55.:04:58.

racing in Murren and then to St Anton, and then it went on the road

:04:59.:05:03.

to Sestriere, garnish and Chamonix. This is a classic stop of the

:05:04.:05:11.

Kandahar ski race. How do you know so much? I am a member of the

:05:12.:05:15.

Kandahar Ski Club and I trained there as a kid. The French have a

:05:16.:05:21.

rich ski racing heritage, it was the French is set up the World Cup along

:05:22.:05:25.

with the American, Bob Beattie. Jean-Claude Keeley took the first

:05:26.:05:29.

two World Cup titles but not since Luc Alphand have they had an overall

:05:30.:05:36.

title winner. That was back in 1997, although France have a large chunk

:05:37.:05:39.

of the outs, it is a small proportion of their country so ski

:05:40.:05:44.

racing is a minority sport. You compare that to Switzerland or

:05:45.:05:47.

Austria, it is their number one sport. That is why they are able to

:05:48.:05:51.

put more investment in it. The French do have strength in depth and

:05:52.:05:55.

could produce an overall winner. The best shot recently has been Alexis

:05:56.:06:03.

Pinturault. Could the winner be a Frenchman? Guillermo Fayed, the

:06:04.:06:06.

group upon this mountain and he knows it like the back of his hand.

:06:07.:06:10.

He has the skill set to do well on this course but the surprise could

:06:11.:06:14.

come from anywhere. Steven Nyman is a good shout, big and strong and

:06:15.:06:20.

smooth on his skis. Guillermo Fayed looked incredibly relaxed. That is

:06:21.:06:25.

what you need on this course. Eight glittering list of previous winners,

:06:26.:06:26.

who can join Schranz, Kuszczak, Gra. COMMENTATOR: Getting chucked about

:06:27.:07:02.

all over the place. Can he take first position? Yes. Before the

:07:03.:07:10.

racers tackle this Kandahar course, it is time for me to take a closer

:07:11.:07:15.

look at it. A little bit of snow falling, at the start there are a

:07:16.:07:18.

couple of little turns that you need to stay high on. And just work the

:07:19.:07:24.

speed, we are heading down towards the first jump. This first jump, you

:07:25.:07:32.

still need the right gear to get up in the air. This is the passage

:07:33.:07:40.

Eriksson. Setting up for the rush a blanc. It is important to delay this

:07:41.:07:44.

term, you have to wait and then get hard on that ski. Quite rough and

:07:45.:07:52.

bumpy over the little road. You need good direction back. Don't want to

:07:53.:07:54.

miss that gate. Over the next jump. This is so important, you need to

:07:55.:08:16.

carry the speed out onto the flat. Try and carry maximum speed. Towards

:08:17.:08:22.

the road jump. You have to jump away a little bit here. And it is the

:08:23.:08:30.

fastest part of the course, close to the finish line, it is quite icy

:08:31.:08:32.

here. And then you cross the line. A lot of gliding on that course and

:08:33.:08:45.

the new snow in the middle section is slowing it down ever so slightly.

:08:46.:08:49.

That is why it is so crucial to carry speed out of the blanc and

:08:50.:08:56.

over that jump. That is where the race will be decided. Over the Max

:08:57.:09:01.

Chilton for commentary. COMMENTATOR: Midwinter in the shadow of mighty

:09:02.:09:06.

Mont blanc and the crowd are out in force for the Kandahar race. We are

:09:07.:09:09.

set for the ninth World Cup downhill of the season. An explosive start

:09:10.:09:21.

from the man in yellow. A flat, like today, that was a clumsy looking

:09:22.:09:27.

jump by the Canadian. Last time he raced here was back in 2012, he was

:09:28.:09:32.

stretchered off the mountain with a broken leg. He needs to put that out

:09:33.:09:37.

of his mind and focus on the high-speed work ahead. Looking

:09:38.:09:40.

pretty good so far. But currently do in the finish, the Austrian, and

:09:41.:09:51.

Osborne parody as he comes through. He comes through in good shape. 16

:09:52.:10:00.

hundredths off the pace now. His next bit, 1.44.43, he has an

:10:01.:10:06.

advantage of one hundredth of a second and he is the fastest man on

:10:07.:10:12.

amount in. 117 K pH, absolutely tearing down. Final turn, has he

:10:13.:10:18.

done enough to lead? He has got it, he is into first for Canada. The

:10:19.:10:23.

Canadians have a happy history on this course and he really attacked

:10:24.:10:29.

on the top part. But little roll out of the start catching him

:10:30.:10:31.

off-balance and throwing him onto the tales of the skis but he was

:10:32.:10:35.

attacking the top section. What he does really well is the glide,

:10:36.:10:39.

picking up a lot of time after that road jump to the finish. An early

:10:40.:10:47.

marker set by the Canadian. Next up, Steven Nyman, the veteran American

:10:48.:10:51.

has notched up three World Cup downhill wins and is looking to the

:10:52.:10:54.

future, hoping to leave a legacy block -- beyond his racing career.

:10:55.:11:00.

He works for a charity that gives underprivileged kids the chance to

:11:01.:11:06.

try snow sports. Can he make child's play of the Chamonix slopes? Steven

:11:07.:11:11.

Nyman of American, still pushing after 100 metres. Still involved

:11:12.:11:17.

with his ski poles in the snow. The leader from Canada, he is faster. He

:11:18.:11:26.

just missed a medal at the Alpine world skiing Championships last

:11:27.:11:34.

year. He finished fourth behind the medal winners. Getting bounced

:11:35.:11:41.

around, tough to see where he is going in the flat light, no real

:11:42.:11:46.

definition on the high part of the course. Visibility slightly easier

:11:47.:11:52.

on the bottom half. 0.23, beautiful jump there from Steven Nyman.

:11:53.:11:56.

Absolutely rock-solid in-flight. Now, he opens up a wide stance,

:11:57.:12:00.

cutting through the air effectively. Through the forest and Nyman looks

:12:01.:12:09.

to be in good shape here. Steven Nyman, 11th place in the World Cup

:12:10.:12:14.

downhill standings coming into this event. Looking for a decent finish

:12:15.:12:21.

for the season. Look at this, 0.69 in front. The Canadian's lead is

:12:22.:12:26.

under threat from Steven Nyman from Utah. Coming towards the road jump,

:12:27.:12:34.

this could be a crucial part of the course. He needs to get this right,

:12:35.:12:38.

long flight, soft and gentle on landing. Then there is one tight

:12:39.:12:42.

turn towards the finish which has caught a few of them out. Nyman

:12:43.:12:47.

needs to take it early, he tucks involve a line, Nyman leads the way

:12:48.:12:54.

for the USA, by eight tenths of a second. My tip for a surprise

:12:55.:12:58.

winner, Steven Nyman putting down an impressive run. So loose and relaxed

:12:59.:13:02.

on his skis, there was one section where he was going through the

:13:03.:13:06.

middle part of the course where he made this incredibly smooth

:13:07.:13:12.

transition. He takes an enormous amount of risks by staying so

:13:13.:13:16.

relaxed and a brilliant glider. Absolutely great on the flats. Next

:13:17.:13:24.

up is Dominik Paris, when he is not competing, he is the front man of a

:13:25.:13:31.

death metal band. Rather in keeping with his all out racing, he will

:13:32.:13:34.

hope he is pitch perfect on the slope and he will be singing a

:13:35.:13:40.

victory song in Chamonix today. Dominik Paris, the big Italian, what

:13:41.:13:45.

a powerful start, goodness me. You will never see anyone except the

:13:46.:13:49.

start faster and with more determination than that. He is

:13:50.:13:56.

without a World Cup win this season. Went well in the two training runs,

:13:57.:14:01.

looking quite sharp. He is faster than Nyman at the first checkpoint.

:14:02.:14:12.

Now he needs to set up and negotiate these this turns. Ard on the left

:14:13.:14:17.

ski and then hard on the right. Standing tall and negotiating the

:14:18.:14:21.

next jump on the next exit. On his way. Down towards the forested part

:14:22.:14:29.

of the course where visibility is a little more straightforward. Just

:14:30.:14:34.

three hundredths in front. Off onto the glide.

:14:35.:14:41.

Rock solid in flight. Total commitment to this course so far for

:14:42.:14:48.

Dominik Paris of Italy. The Italians have had a good season across the

:14:49.:14:53.

board, in both the men's and the women's world Cup tour. 1: 43.

:14:54.:15:03.

22 hundredths of a second. Bottom part of the course to come.

:15:04.:15:09.

Visibility difficult here. Can he negotiate this final turn? It looks

:15:10.:15:14.

good. Paris leads in France and that will take some beating.

:15:15.:15:18.

When you see Dominik Paris warming up in the start area you have to

:15:19.:15:24.

realise he's a big guy. He's strong enough to carry that extra weight

:15:25.:15:28.

and that is what helped him glide along the flat. It is not just about

:15:29.:15:33.

that, he's very smooth on his skis. That is what makes him such a good

:15:34.:15:37.

glider, what makes him really fast on a course like this.

:15:38.:15:45.

Adrien Theaux on his way for the French team, looking for early

:15:46.:15:49.

speed. Has been a winner already this season. He took round four of

:15:50.:15:56.

the world Cup tour at the end of December in Italy. This is a good

:15:57.:15:57.

start. December in Italy. This is a good

:15:58.:16:01.

The crowd are seeing this on the big screen, down in the village and they

:16:02.:16:05.

are starting to get behind Adrien Theaux.

:16:06.:16:09.

Hugely talented downhiller. Let's see if he

:16:10.:16:12.

Hugely talented downhiller. down here today.

:16:13.:16:13.

Good on the way in. Smooth on the exit. Stays within the

:16:14.:16:22.

blue racing lane, which is adding a certain contrast and definition to

:16:23.:16:26.

the race's visibility in Chamonix today.

:16:27.:16:30.

He's lost a bit of time on the glide. Now Adrien Theaux needs to

:16:31.:16:37.

just claw back a couple of tenths to give himself a chance of a podium.

:16:38.:16:42.

Off the road jump, which has been built up artificially to add to the

:16:43.:16:48.

spectacle of the Kandahar Downhill. Theaux cannot beat - he is third for

:16:49.:16:58.

the moment. 1.15 slower than the Italian.

:16:59.:17:02.

Ready to race is Guillermo Fayed. The local favourite is having a

:17:03.:17:08.

great season, despite the setback of someone making off with his ski

:17:09.:17:14.

boots. Luckily an eagle-eyed commentator spotted the thief

:17:15.:17:15.

wearing them on the mountain. Guillermo Fayed, from right here in

:17:16.:17:30.

Chamonix. He grew up racing on these slopes and his friends and family

:17:31.:17:34.

are here, making a huge amount of noise at the bottom of the course.

:17:35.:17:39.

They are encouraged because Fayed set the fastest time in the first

:17:40.:17:43.

training run, held on the mountain on Wednesday.

:17:44.:17:48.

Potentially a sign of good things to come. Guillermo Fayed - fifth in the

:17:49.:17:56.

World Championship. Downhill last season. Fifth in the World Cup

:17:57.:18:01.

downhill standings. Third season. Fifth in the World Cup

:18:02.:18:08.

classic before Christmas. In pretty good shape so far. Very much in

:18:09.:18:17.

touch here. 0.34 down. He's closed the gap by another eight hundred

:18:18.:18:26.

dretds -- hundredths. Fayed was particularly sharp on the bottom of

:18:27.:18:32.

the mountain. Needs to replicate that on race down. Lands softly and

:18:33.:18:38.

gently and sets infor the running to home. Last couple of homes. It will

:18:39.:18:45.

be close. Oh, he's third for the moment.

:18:46.:18:54.

Very good from the local boy. Great gliding position. You can tell he

:18:55.:19:00.

knows every inch of this course. Ran slightly wide on that last turn.

:19:01.:19:03.

That is when he dropped a couple of tenths. He was challenging for

:19:04.:19:06.

second, but now he's down in third. Fill off and running. A smooth start

:19:07.:19:31.

for the veteran Italian. 700ths of a second off the pace of Paris.

:19:32.:19:56.

If he never wins another race, he will always be remembered for

:19:57.:20:03.

conquering the strife in mid-January.

:20:04.:20:07.

Off on to the flied here in Chamonix. He needs to pick up points

:20:08.:20:12.

if he is to mount a serious challenge for the downhill title for

:20:13.:20:19.

2016. He's in touch here. 26 hundredths off the time of Dominik

:20:20.:20:21.

Paris. Now we hundredths off the time of Dominik

:20:22.:20:26.

of the course. Just over half a second for Fill to find. He

:20:27.:20:31.

approaches the road jump and the final tricky turn, where some have

:20:32.:20:37.

discovered trouble, Peter Fill is on course for a top five. Stands hard

:20:38.:20:43.

on the left ski. Has to steer clear of the final control gate. Dives

:20:44.:20:48.

inside that and Peter Fill is fourth for Italy. 0.89 off the pace. Next

:20:49.:21:01.

is The lightingen Ball. He claims playing golf is vital in his

:21:02.:21:06.

rehabilitation. Now he's off the golf course he will hope there's no

:21:07.:21:11.

bogeys here for him and that lightning strikes with victory

:21:12.:21:12.

today. Chasing the time of Dominik Paris

:21:13.:21:32.

here. His strength and confidence grows

:21:33.:21:38.

after coming back from injury, race by race. Lots of Swiss fans here.

:21:39.:21:46.

Down on to the Swiss side only an hour's drive from the Chamonix

:21:47.:21:51.

valley. So plenty of Swiss supporters have made the journey and

:21:52.:22:01.

they may well be remembered because remembered Beat Feuz is storming

:22:02.:22:07.

downhill. Beat Feuz needs to be in the hunt.

:22:08.:22:14.

He's pushing for a podium place here.

:22:15.:22:24.

Twenty one hundredths off the pace. That could deny Guillermo Fayed, who

:22:25.:22:32.

sits in place for the host nation, France. I a am not sure he'll beat

:22:33.:22:43.

Paris, but he will come close. Beat Feuz towards the final section. A

:22:44.:22:48.

little twitch there. Has he done enough? He's on the podium in third.

:22:49.:23:02.

A bit of a grown in the finish area as Beat Feuz knocks the favourite

:23:03.:23:03.

off the podium. Beat Feuz comes in to take third.

:23:04.:23:15.

Unlucky for Guillermo Fayed, the local boy, who was pushed down to

:23:16.:23:20.

fourth place. You are having a great weekend here

:23:21.:23:26.

in Chamonix. What do you like about the course so much? I don't know. A

:23:27.:23:31.

good speed on the course and it's not so easy to bring it on the flats

:23:32.:23:39.

and that's what I did today and I'm happy. What are the skills you need

:23:40.:23:46.

to ski well on this course? In Chamonix you need to execute the

:23:47.:23:50.

top, which is the technical section and carry all that speed on the

:23:51.:23:57.

flat. I thought I nailed it, but Dominik nailed it. He's a big boy. I

:23:58.:24:03.

am 100kgs, he's probably 105. Steven Nyman says that you have a little

:24:04.:24:08.

bit extra weight than he does and that's what made the difference?

:24:09.:24:14.

Maybe. A lot of weight here. Very possibly.

:24:15.:24:31.

The World Cup took place in Italy. Vonn did secure the downhill title

:24:32.:24:35.

with her second place on Saturday, behind the surprise winner of Italy.

:24:36.:24:41.

In the freestyle World Cup test event in South Korea Britain's Katie

:24:42.:24:55.

Almerod finished fourth. In the ski slopes Katie Sumerhayse finished

:24:56.:24:59.

sixth. The winter youth Olympic Games has seen some excellent

:25:00.:25:03.

results for British athletes, including gold.

:25:04.:25:08.

There was bronze in the women's monobob.

:25:09.:25:16.

In freestyle skiing Addy Rowlands had bronzed in the slopestyle.

:25:17.:25:27.

No matter how different the discipline, all athletes are linked

:25:28.:25:34.

by their need for an adrenaline fix, to seek out thrills every day life

:25:35.:25:39.

cannot supply. Outside this action-packed world things can be

:25:40.:25:43.

surprisingly different, as Ed has been finding out.

:25:44.:25:48.

It is the middle of January in London, probably the last place you

:25:49.:25:54.

would expect to find Britain's best mountain snowboarder. This is where

:25:55.:26:00.

you will find Sascha Hamm, Monday to Friday, 9-5.

:26:01.:26:07.

Hello. How are you? Ed, you are too early. We are trying to work. If you

:26:08.:26:16.

can come back in like three hours. No!

:26:17.:26:21.

I was expecting your suit. A tie and a jacket.

:26:22.:26:24.

Have you ever seen me so smart? No. Exactly. We are like an estate

:26:25.:26:34.

agent, but like clients who want to invest, not in stocks and shares,

:26:35.:26:39.

but to buy a property. It is incredibly serious. Not really. This

:26:40.:26:43.

is a side of you I have never seen after 20 years. We did a season back

:26:44.:26:48.

in 2000. Are you tried it. You failed. I managed it. But... So much

:26:49.:26:55.

I want to ask you about. I want to get stuck into these guys first. I

:26:56.:27:04.

want to talk to them. OK. Do you know what Sascha Hamm does in

:27:05.:27:08.

his spare time? I believe he's famous, isn't he? He does some

:27:09.:27:14.

extreme sport. I have seen some videos on YouTube after having

:27:15.:27:16.

googled his name. How much did you know about what he

:27:17.:27:26.

had done in snowboarding terms then? Not much. I mentioned his name to a

:27:27.:27:31.

friend who went to university and he was like, oh, my God, you work with

:27:32.:27:35.

him! I was like, what, you are joking. Like idealising him. I was

:27:36.:27:40.

like, no, no, he's not like that. When he decided to go back to

:27:41.:27:44.

snowboarding was it a concern for you? First of all the free ride I

:27:45.:27:50.

was told that was going to be a one-off, which is why I agreed he

:27:51.:27:53.

could leave the office on a Thursday night and come back on a Monday.

:27:54.:27:57.

This has been going on for three years now. So, yeah. Do you think

:27:58.:28:04.

there's an end in sight for the adrenaline side of him? No. The

:28:05.:28:08.

transformation is complete? It is final.

:28:09.:28:11.

Off to the mountain. See ya! Bye! How do you separate office life

:28:12.:28:22.

and snowboard life? At the moment, what I have done is I have managed

:28:23.:28:26.

to separate it. I have four days work. I think I am more productive

:28:27.:28:31.

and have a weekend of three days, not spending it in London and then

:28:32.:28:34.

you can switch off. Of course when you come back into the office on

:28:35.:28:38.

Monday you are fully prepared to get back to work. In six times of winter

:28:39.:28:45.

you have to transition from the office into an elite snowboarding

:28:46.:28:49.

contest. You are talking about snowboarding competitions. I dodo

:28:50.:28:54.

this every weekend. This is from mid-December all the way through to

:28:55.:28:59.

June. I thought I would take you to the home of the free world ride

:29:00.:29:02.

tour. You were one of the first British

:29:03.:29:11.

rider who got an international contract. You were the most

:29:12.:29:17.

naturally talented of our generation of snowboarders and you pretty much

:29:18.:29:23.

turned your back on it? I want to be a snowboard professional. I did five

:29:24.:29:28.

seasons in the Alps and then after that won the British Championships

:29:29.:29:32.

and that got me a bit of money to start what I really always wanted to

:29:33.:29:37.

do, which was to become a Formula One driver.

:29:38.:29:44.

I wept to a racing school in the UK, in Silverstone, but it was manic

:29:45.:29:48.

with the amount of money you have to put into it. Snowboarding is with

:29:49.:29:53.

?10,000 you have the best season ever. With motor racing with

:29:54.:30:01.

?100,000 you hardly scrape through. What was your nickname? Sacha the

:30:02.:30:07.

crasher! I did have a couple of incidents, but that is the way you

:30:08.:30:11.

learn: You have to push the limits and see how far you can go. You did

:30:12.:30:17.

decide to go back to competing. You did have free ride proper. You made

:30:18.:30:20.

a splash, didn't you? I had a very good run, I was quite

:30:21.:30:35.

happy. For me, it then went downhill. You pulled it back in

:30:36.:30:40.

Alaska, one of the best runs of the day? Alaska was good fun, it had

:30:41.:30:46.

loads of powder, one of the best events we have had. You have been

:30:47.:30:49.

pretty much Europe -based, the first time you were there? Europe is

:30:50.:30:56.

accessible, you do not have rules, you have to take your own

:30:57.:30:59.

responsibility into your own hands. That leads us into one of the most

:31:00.:31:03.

spectacular avalanche survival stories on record. You saw this

:31:04.:31:11.

space that lead into complete no man's land, my friend got turned

:31:12.:31:18.

around and me being stubborn, decided to keep on going.

:31:19.:31:25.

I was about five feet under the snow, I was stuck in their and I

:31:26.:31:52.

thought that was it. Luckily I had a very big air pocket on the right

:31:53.:31:57.

side of my body and my phone was literally in the right pocket. Yes,

:31:58.:32:04.

yes. I called my friend, I navigated him to roughly where I was and said

:32:05.:32:09.

if I could hear them getting louder, tell them and that is how they ended

:32:10.:32:14.

up pinpointing me. I have never heard anyone surviving past and our

:32:15.:32:19.

really, let alone two hours. You'll agree usually guys suffocate. I got

:32:20.:32:24.

really lucky, learned my lesson, don't go riding on your own and the

:32:25.:32:27.

most important one is don't go riding when you are very tired. You

:32:28.:32:33.

look back and you are not 40 yet and you have done a huge amount. Is

:32:34.:32:39.

there anything you still have to do? For me, snowboarding, I am in my

:32:40.:32:46.

30s. But for me it is about enjoyment still. When you are in

:32:47.:32:52.

London, you basically wake up and go into work and you are stuck on the

:32:53.:32:56.

tube, being out on amount in, you are free. Snowboarding has always

:32:57.:32:59.

been about being out there with friends and doing things where after

:33:00.:33:05.

you have done your run, or you have climbed that peak, it fulfils you.

:33:06.:33:13.

Sascha Hamm with an unconventional route to the top of his sport. It is

:33:14.:33:18.

something that former chalet girl and Olympic bronze medallist Jenny

:33:19.:33:22.

Jones can relate to. This week she has been with some athletes who have

:33:23.:33:26.

had their pathway to a leaked level competition mapped out from an early

:33:27.:33:30.

age, at the winter youth Olympics in Lillehammer.

:33:31.:33:38.

The Winter Olympics two years ago was one of the best experiences of

:33:39.:33:52.

my life. She has done it. It wasn't just winning a bronze medal at the

:33:53.:33:56.

Olympics, it was more about being part of a team and representing my

:33:57.:34:01.

country. What an amazing opportunity for 16 young GB athletes to get a

:34:02.:34:06.

taste of what is potentially to come. I am heading to Oslo to watch

:34:07.:34:12.

the half pipe because I read you want to see Madi Rowlands in action,

:34:13.:34:16.

she is only 15 and is already making waves in freestyle skiing. This is

:34:17.:34:21.

the first summer I have seen the half pipe and it is not for the

:34:22.:34:25.

faint-hearted. They are definitely going to have to hold their nerves

:34:26.:34:26.

in this contest. There she is, go on. She is safe.

:34:27.:34:44.

Yes. Maddie just put it down, lovely 540 and a brilliant 720.

:34:45.:34:52.

I am Alexei to the year, I don't know why. The champion, Madi

:34:53.:35:07.

Rowlands. Well done. How does that feel? I am so happy. What does this

:35:08.:35:15.

event mean to you? Everything, I am so happy. You have to phone your

:35:16.:35:24.

mum. Back in Lillehammer, I am going to meet Adam Pinky Lee, the shifter

:35:25.:35:29.

mission and find out what he hoped the athletes take from this. First

:35:30.:35:35.

we are here to compete but also learn. They get to see the guys in

:35:36.:35:39.

Team GB and see how the system works. They understand the limbic

:35:40.:35:44.

village, dining room and the accreditation you need to go

:35:45.:35:47.

everywhere. Not just to watch each other in competitions but watching

:35:48.:35:50.

training and supporting one another. The older ones are looking after the

:35:51.:35:55.

younger ones. Some of the boys are giving it lots of this as they

:35:56.:35:59.

normally do. It has been great to see them work together and support

:36:00.:36:03.

one another. Do you think many of them will make it onto the Olympics

:36:04.:36:08.

from the standard you are seeing? I hope so, we talked about the youth

:36:09.:36:14.

games being part of a journey. Most of them are on the early path to

:36:15.:36:17.

their journey and hopefully that will finish in the Olympic Games and

:36:18.:36:21.

hopefully on the podium. It might not but that is what I want them to

:36:22.:36:27.

aspire to. I will check out buying the scenes in the Olympic Village

:36:28.:36:30.

area with Jasmine and Ian who will show me around, shall we say how

:36:31.:36:33.

dirty your rooms are? This is the girl 's room with four

:36:34.:36:46.

bunks, is it cramped or OK? It is very cramped but it is fine. I have

:36:47.:36:51.

to mention there is a medal hanging off of one of the beds, has it been

:36:52.:36:56.

hanging there ever since? It has been everywhere, in a few cupboards,

:36:57.:37:03.

bags. And you are the most messy? LOUD APPEALS

:37:04.:37:07.

Yes, definitely. This reminds me so much of Saatchi. Have you got

:37:08.:37:20.

different future aspirations for your career? For me it is a stepping

:37:21.:37:25.

stone between standard international races and the senior Olympics. After

:37:26.:37:28.

having done this, I am keen to go to the Olympics. The Olympics in Korea

:37:29.:37:36.

in two years but more realistic is six years in Beijing. Would you like

:37:37.:37:42.

the next one? I think Beijing is more realistic, it is definitely a

:37:43.:37:47.

stepping stone and I do think it is achievable. I love that the guys get

:37:48.:37:52.

to meet with athletes from all the different countries and sports but

:37:53.:37:56.

also keen to compete and beat them when it matters. A great atmosphere

:37:57.:38:01.

at the Alpine and now we have Yasmin in the giant slalom.

:38:02.:38:11.

She was coming out of the start, I hope she's not too nervous. Oh no, I

:38:12.:38:21.

don't know what happened, she is not actually finished the machine must

:38:22.:38:25.

have either crashed or missed a gate. How did it go? I tried to be

:38:26.:38:34.

as aggressive as possible and really go for it. I didn't want to go to

:38:35.:38:39.

the games and feel like I could have done more, I gave it everything. I

:38:40.:38:42.

am fine with coming out because I know I was trying my hardest. How

:38:43.:38:48.

has the experience been in the last few days? A bit of a roller-coaster,

:38:49.:38:53.

today didn't go as well, but I did get a couple of personal bests in

:38:54.:38:57.

the super combine so I am happy with that. It has been so good to come to

:38:58.:39:02.

the event and meet these guys, they have a real team spirit amongst

:39:03.:39:06.

them. Surely it is a great thing for them to experience the highs and

:39:07.:39:14.

lows of Olympic competition. Off the back of that gold in Lillehammer, it

:39:15.:39:17.

seems appropriate to start the last Ski Social of the season celebrating

:39:18.:39:22.

all of the young British talent in snow sport. We have accumulated

:39:23.:39:23.

quite a show your this week. That has been added to this week by

:39:24.:39:45.

ill of Ella and 10 euros Martha and Meyer. And seven-year-old Oscar who

:39:46.:39:52.

has the look of his old man about him. Sadly he has inherited my

:39:53.:39:58.

flailing arms. Talking about men, Graham did a course run here using a

:39:59.:40:03.

360 camera with some incredible footage, if you want to check it

:40:04.:40:07.

out, go to the BBC sport Facebook page. Nicola has worked out a way of

:40:08.:40:12.

filming himself through three of the Dixie degrees off piste, you do have

:40:13.:40:19.

to ski powder. It looks a little gangland style. Talking of South

:40:20.:40:22.

Korea, Jamie Nicholls has been testing out the new slopestyle

:40:23.:40:27.

course ahead of the Olympics. I guarantee you one thing, there will

:40:28.:40:34.

be far more rotations in that run. Before we go, we have time for a

:40:35.:40:38.

couple of questions. The first one from Dave Blackwell, he wants to

:40:39.:40:42.

know, in freestyle, who is pushing the boundaries more, skiers or

:40:43.:40:48.

snowboarders? 2009-2012, free skiing was leading the charge but since Lee

:40:49.:40:54.

Morgan landed the quad court, it has gone back to the snowboarding court.

:40:55.:40:59.

On a similar note, another cheeky question from a certain Tim Warwood,

:41:00.:41:04.

he wants to know what is better, skis or snowboard? I think what he

:41:05.:41:09.

is actually asking is will we have a fight? I have a snowboard in the

:41:10.:41:14.

back of my car and you don't have any skis. I know lots of skis or

:41:15.:41:18.

snowboard but not any snowboarders who ski, what does that tell you?

:41:19.:41:24.

Allen snowboarders it is easier than skiing. Skiers have more fun, it is

:41:25.:41:30.

more graceful and expressive. Power is nothing without control. This

:41:31.:41:34.

could go on forever and I do not want to end on a confrontational

:41:35.:41:39.

note. Use whatever vehicle you want on a mountain, just enjoy

:41:40.:41:42.

yourselves. I'm afraid that is it for this show and this season.

:41:43.:41:45.

Another incredible winter and what better way to to celebrate than a

:41:46.:41:52.

rousing highlight montage. Thank you Karen McDougal for selecting the

:41:53.:41:56.

music and for watching this evening everyone, see you next year.

:41:57.:42:03.

Yellow macro hi. This year we got given the opportunity to try

:42:04.:42:16.

something bigger and better. First time ever I ended up first.

:42:17.:42:50.

Wow, Jamie Anderson is untouchable. A lot of other people would like to

:42:51.:42:51.

be in there with you. What happens if you've done the

:42:52.:43:01.

calculation is wrong. Then someone might get their head chopped off.

:43:02.:43:12.

What a season riding has had. Gone. That is unbelievable. It is a world

:43:13.:43:39.

first. Aksel Lund Svindal absolutely burning it down. A brilliant second

:43:40.:43:43.

run, he has got it, Henrik Kristoffersen is first for Norway.

:43:44.:43:51.

This lady is absolutely unstoppable. Peter Fill skiing for the lead. I

:43:52.:43:59.

told you that was worth it, awesome stuff.

:44:00.:44:00.

'I think he was being nudged there by Moreno.

:44:01.:44:04.

'Mahrez kept control of the ball, looking for Vardy,

:44:05.:44:08.
