Dropping.

0:00:140:00:22

4240 metres to ski. 2.5 miles.

0:00:560:01:00

In the above Wengen, the crowds

gathered to witness the best of the

0:01:050:01:10

best.

0:01:100:01:17

best. -- in the skies above Wengen.

To become the very best takes

0:01:170:01:22

meticulous preparation. Only when

you are truly ready can you take

0:01:220:01:25

flight.

0:01:250:01:26

To conquer the Lauberhorn takes

endurance.

Has he got the strength

0:01:330:01:39

and stamina?

Concentration. He is on

course and then he goes.

Oh, dear.

0:01:390:01:46

Agility, lightning reflexes. That is

how to do it, he makes the turn in

0:01:460:01:49

midair.

And more than anything else,

speed.

The speed through the gun is

0:01:490:01:58

more than 100 mph. He has left it

all on the Lauberhorn.

0:01:580:02:06

Hello and welcome to Ski Sunday.

0:02:110:02:14

This week, we're in Wengen

for the men's downhill.

0:02:140:02:19

When you look at the statistics it

is easy to see why this race is a

0:02:190:02:23

classic.

0:02:230:02:25

It's the oldest,

established in 1930.

0:02:250:02:26

It's the longest, four

and a half kilometres,

0:02:260:02:28

two and a half minutes of racing

on the limit.

0:02:280:02:33

And it's the fastest,

with the speedometer clocking

0:02:330:02:35

a record 100mph a few years ago.

0:02:350:02:37

It truly is a spectacle

not to be missed.

0:02:370:02:42

And from the speed of the downhill,

we take things down a notch

0:02:420:02:45

with the inspiring tale of a young

woman called Chase.

0:02:450:02:48

Her health issues make everyday life

incredibly difficult,

0:02:480:02:50

but her passion for snowboarding

makes the pain worthwhile.

0:02:500:02:58

I love how do kind of free it feels.

It is like flying.

It is amazing.

0:02:580:03:05

Let's go flying.

0:03:050:03:08

Before that, we've got the men's

downhill from Wengen.

0:03:080:03:12

Raced on the mighty Lauberhorn,

it's a course dripping in history,

0:03:120:03:16

with all the features named

after famous, or infamous moments.

0:03:160:03:20

Before his camera run,

Graham's been taking

0:03:200:03:22

a trip down memory lane.

0:03:220:03:28

There are number of sections and

there's Lauberhorn course that set

0:03:280:03:31

it apart from any other downhill in

the world. Because it is so old,

0:03:310:03:36

some of these features would not be

allowed on a modern downhill. The

0:03:360:03:41

first one is this, Hundschopf. The

hound's head. It is of that -- it is

0:03:410:03:48

effectively a cliff drop. The

growing drops away from you and you

0:03:480:03:52

go into freefall, giving you

butterflies in your stomach. The

0:03:520:03:56

landing is super steep, but if you

are out jump the landing like

0:03:560:04:01

Svindal did a few years ago, you

will end up crashing out.

He is in

0:04:010:04:05

the nets.

My word. I remember my

arms flailing. It gets the

0:04:050:04:09

adrenaline going. As soon as you

land from the Hundschopf, you have

0:04:090:04:15

picked up lots of speed. You have

this left-hander onto this jump

0:04:150:04:21

known as Minsch-Kante, named after a

Swiss skier who crashed here. It is

0:04:210:04:26

harder than it looks. You have to

switch weight from one like to the

0:04:260:04:30

other well you're in a. When you

land from the Minsch-Kante, you are

0:04:300:04:36

straight onto the Canadian Corner,

named after the Canadians who

0:04:360:04:38

crashed here in the 1970s. Another

section that would not be allowed on

0:04:380:04:43

a modern downhill. This is now known

as the Kernen-S. There was a

0:04:430:04:51

spectacular crash in the 1990s. This

is where the course goes underneath

0:04:510:04:57

the railway. I always reckoned it

was lucky if there was a train going

0:04:570:05:00

over the top as you race underneath.

No time to wave. This is the fastest

0:05:000:05:08

part of the course, the

Haneggschuss. It is the fastest part

0:05:080:05:12

of any course. A few years ago a

French skier went over 100 mph

0:05:120:05:17

through the speed trap. Remarkable

speed across the snow. Up there is

0:05:170:05:24

the Silberhornsprung. It is a fairly

new edition, but this part is the

0:05:240:05:28

Osterreicherloch. The Swiss

christened it as a date at the

0:05:280:05:34

Austrian rivals, including this

legend. The crashed one after

0:05:340:05:38

another kid in 1954. In 1984, Bill

Johnson spectacularly stayed on the

0:05:380:05:44

course. Bill Johnson, down the

Lauberhorn. At this point the lactic

0:05:440:05:52

acid will build up so much that your

legs will be screaming at you. You

0:05:520:05:56

need to summon up every last bit of

energy to take on the course. It is

0:05:560:06:02

the Ziel-S. After 2.5 minutes,

you're absolutely spent. This

0:06:020:06:07

legendary Swiss skier crashed into

the hay bales back in the 1980s.

0:06:070:06:14

More recently, Miller crashed in the

finish area after winning the race.

0:06:140:06:20

Unbelievable drama. It really is a

physical test from start to finish.

0:06:200:06:25

Amazing to think people have been

racing on this course for almost 90

0:06:290:06:32

years.

0:06:320:06:35

But the thing that really

marks it out as being

0:06:350:06:37

different is its length.

0:06:370:06:38

Just put that extra distance

into context compared

0:06:380:06:40

with a normal downhill course?

0:06:400:06:41

Physically it would be like asking a

400 metre runner to run 600 meters

0:06:410:06:46

are Premier League footballer to

play extra time in every game. The

0:06:460:06:50

toughest part of this course is in

the last 30 seconds. The Ziel-S.

0:06:500:06:58

What type of skier does this Cossu?

Someone tenacious? Historically it

0:06:580:07:02

has been a skier with a good

technical base. Someone who has

0:07:020:07:08

switched to downhill. Because of the

tight turns and the long gliding

0:07:080:07:13

sections. You need to carry the

speed out of the terms.

When you

0:07:130:07:17

look at the World Cup rankings

furred downhill, the top men, Feuz

0:07:170:07:22

and Svindal are both previous

winners. You've got to expect them

0:07:220:07:25

to feature?

Yes, Svindal does not

train quickly because he's coming

0:07:250:07:30

back from a knee injury but he will

pull it out 100% for the race. Beat

0:07:300:07:35

Feuz does not need one hand -- does

not need any excuse to go 100%,

0:07:350:07:40

particularly at home in Switzerland.

Who do you fancy? There are the

0:07:400:07:50

Italians. Dominik Paris edged out

Svindal just before Christmas. His

0:07:500:07:53

team-mate, Peter Fill as well. There

are Austrians, Max Franz, Matthias

0:07:530:08:00

Mayer, to name but two. We could

news on the result, but there are no

0:08:000:08:06

guarantees in downhill, especially

on a course that gets your heart

0:08:060:08:11

pounding, your legs screaming, and

puts the crowd into a frenzy.

0:08:110:08:19

-- whips the crowd. He leads the

way. Absolutely ripping it up, going

0:08:210:08:30

like an express train.

0:08:300:08:37

It has been five years since we have

been able to start at the top

0:08:370:08:42

without any weather delays, so this

is a real treat. Let's have a look

0:08:420:08:46

at the most classic of downhills. It

is fast up year. The snow is running

0:08:460:08:51

really quick. Now we are approaching

the Hundschopf. You can see the

0:08:510:08:59

Eiger. It is looking down on you.

You come into this tight

0:08:590:09:07

right-hander. You have got to carry

the speed through. Into the

0:09:070:09:10

left-hander. Setting up for the

jump. Over the jump. Down onto the

0:09:100:09:19

steep section. Heading towards the

Minsch-Kante. Switch the edges. Now

0:09:190:09:26

the Canadian Corner. That is good,

carry the speed out onto the little

0:09:260:09:34

flat. Now the Kernen-S. No room to

set up, right by the fence. Ardron

0:09:340:09:40

the edges. Run out onto the bank.

Carry maximum speed onto the next

0:09:400:09:48

section as you fly underneath the

railway track.

0:09:480:09:58

We are onto the Haneggschuss. The

courses really icy really fast.

0:10:020:10:08

Absolutely flying. Out into the

sunshine. You have got to carry all

0:10:080:10:15

this speed. The next little jump,

the Silberhornsprung. We are now

0:10:150:10:24

heading towards the

Osterreicherloch. Through the

0:10:240:10:28

Austrian hole. My legs are burning.

You cannot break the park too early.

0:10:280:10:35

Set up wide by the fence, hang on to

the right ski, onto the left ski. No

0:10:350:10:42

energy left as you go over the

finish.

0:10:420:10:49

finish. How are the likes? A little

bit burnt out. The more you go down

0:10:490:10:53

the course, the icy it gets. It is

so warm down here, but it has frozen

0:10:530:10:59

really hard.

We will let you get

your breath back. It is time for the

0:10:590:11:04

men's downhill on the Lauberhorn.

Matt Chilton has the commentary.

0:11:040:11:08

Tens of thousands have flocked to

Wengen for this magnificent race. It

0:11:080:11:13

is one of those rare occasions where

we have perfect conditions and the

0:11:130:11:16

classic Lauberhorn downhill over the

full 4.2 kilometre course. We are

0:11:160:11:23

all set for Wengen 2018. Feuz of

Switzerland, the first to tackle the

0:11:230:11:31

Lauberhorn. Here he goes. 2.5

minutes or there about, like burning

0:11:310:11:36

fun in the mountains. What a day in

the Swiss Alps. We will follow his

0:11:360:11:41

run, some of it at least, from the

helicopter circling above. A

0:11:410:11:45

straightforward start. Some

wide-open turns before he has to

0:11:450:11:51

work hard and concentrate for the

famed and fearsome Hundschopf jump,

0:11:510:11:58

which is a cliff jump, to all

intents and purposes. Down on the

0:11:580:12:04

left ski. Swings around, and then

prepares for this iconic lounge in

0:12:040:12:12

Wengen. Beautifully taken. Perfect

flight. Stands hard and the right

0:12:120:12:17

ski. Now we will pick him up at the

Minsch-Kante which can catch them

0:12:170:12:23

out. Into the Canadian Corner.

Locate out the courses. Just about

0:12:230:12:28

five metres wide at its narrowest

point. The Kernen-S, in at 108.

0:12:280:12:39

point. The Kernen-S, in at 108. I

did 79.1 kilometres per hour. Local

0:12:390:12:41

legend has it that if you go under

the bridge with the train above, you

0:12:410:12:44

are in luck. 110.3, the latest speed

trap reading for Feuz as he comes

0:12:440:12:53

into words the forest. This is the

fastest part of the Lauberhorn, the

0:12:530:13:01

feminists Haneggschuss, where we

would expect speeds in excess of 90

0:13:010:13:05

mph. A little stumble with the left

ski. He recovered well, and dives

0:13:050:13:11

down the quickest part of the

course. We will get another reading

0:13:110:13:15

on his speed across the snow. 145.

That is in excess of 90 mph. Much

0:13:150:13:23

more the rain to come, including the

Silberhornsprung John. Raised

0:13:230:13:29

artificially to add a certain

spectacle to this famous track. By

0:13:290:13:37

now, his legs are on fire. He is a

big unit, Feuz. It is a near-perfect

0:13:370:13:42

run. He flies the final rule and

sets the pace.

It is good. 1: 26.5.

0:13:420:13:51

Feuz putting down a mistake free run

from number one. The early start

0:13:510:13:55

numbers will be favoured as the one

temperatures will soften the track

0:13:550:14:00

in Wengen. The top ten skiers in the

world ranking list get to pick their

0:14:000:14:05

number so it is no coincidence Feuz

is going first. They can only take

0:14:050:14:09

the odd numbers. That run from Feuz

is looking good.

In the start houses

0:14:090:14:15

Svindal. The Norwegian is the leader

of the attacking team, whose photos

0:14:150:14:21

have a light-hearted retro feel to

them. Can Svindal be the gladiator

0:14:210:14:26

and the Lauberhorn piste today.

Svindal ready to tackle Wengen.

0:14:260:14:36

He has been a winner here in 2016,

but it wasn't the full course from

0:14:360:14:40

top to bottom. He would love to get

a win over the floor Lauberhorn

0:14:400:14:45

track, and he's made a good start,

1100 points up over Feuz. He skimmed

0:14:450:14:57

his skis on the snow mid-flight

before taking off again and leaping

0:14:570:15:03

over the French cantor. Still in

front, Svindal taking it well. Down

0:15:030:15:13

towards. Speed on the way in, fast,

108.1. On the exit, he went slightly

0:15:130:15:20

high, a little below the speed

registered by Beat Feuz. Under the

0:15:200:15:25

railway line and away. 27.68 the

next split for Feuz. Svindal is

0:15:250:15:31

right in there, just four hundreds

of the pace. He just allows the skis

0:15:310:15:39

to glide from side to side when he

is in that long Clark, looking for

0:15:390:15:44

the most efficient way across the

snow on the relative flat section

0:15:440:15:49

before the fastest part of the

course.

0:15:490:16:00

course. Feuz's split, 1:57.73, and

Svindal is faster, 146 kilometres

0:16:000:16:05

per hour, almost through the speed

trap. Svindal will give the Swiss a

0:16:050:16:10

real scare. Two hundredths up, and

Svindal in the hunt for top spot.

0:16:100:16:21

Manages to recover his poise and

flies the final roller. Svindal is

0:16:210:16:27

second, he just missed it. Delight

from Feuz. After two and a half

0:16:270:16:34

minutes, it all came down to the

finish, and Beat Feuz was the one

0:16:340:16:39

with more power and strength through

that turn. Svindal may be lost a bit

0:16:390:16:44

on the cantor, when he had to delay

setting that left skied to start the

0:16:440:16:50

Canadian corner, but otherwise

brilliant, changing lead away down.

0:16:500:16:52

In the start-up is Thomas Dressen.

The German is making a name for

0:16:520:17:00

himself and his need for speed

extends beyond the slopes, with a

0:17:000:17:03

real passion for motorbikes. Can he

ride like the wind and BA hells

0:17:030:17:08

angel on the Lauberhorn today? --

and be a hells angel?

0:17:080:17:17

Thomas Dressen for Germany, a big

push out at the start, still

0:17:170:17:21

skating, starting with the ski

poles, long after control gate

0:17:210:17:23

number one. Already macro, the

control gates here. On the

0:17:230:17:29

background in the left, the Eiger.

The Jungfrau on the right, 4158

0:17:290:17:36

metres above sea level, that's more

than 13 and a half thousand feet.

0:17:360:17:44

Thomas Dressen, within half a second

of the lead of Beat Feuz of

0:17:440:17:47

Switzerland, as he comes down here.

They renamed it in favour of a Swiss

0:17:470:17:58

downhillers of the 90s, winning the

world title at Sestriere in 97.

0:17:580:18:04

Under the railway bridge and away

those Thomas Dressen, chasing the

0:18:040:18:08

time of the Swiss leader, Beat Feuz.

Not far off. A difference of half a

0:18:080:18:14

second, and we follow Thomas Dressen

from the helicopter, absolutely

0:18:140:18:20

stunning conditions here in Wengen

today, doesn't get much better. The

0:18:200:18:26

Austrians over in Kitzbuehel will be

hoping for similar weather in the

0:18:260:18:30

build-up to their big race next

Saturday. The Kitzbuehel downhill,

0:18:300:18:34

the toughest of them all. This one

in Wengen, the longest of the lot.

0:18:340:18:40

Thomas Dressen is going well, he

doesn't have a lot of experience on

0:18:400:18:44

this mountain, but he's keeping

himself in contention. Just over

0:18:440:18:46

half a second off the silver horn

jump. Slightly further away to his

0:18:460:18:52

left and he might have liked. Back

into the sunshine now. Trees on

0:18:520:18:56

either side. Signs of fatigue, for

Thomas Dressen. Still hard work to

0:18:560:19:04

go, final big turn. Lands on the

tales, skis into third.

0:19:040:19:11

When Thomas Dressen looks back at

that, he'll figure that he skied

0:19:110:19:14

really well, carried good speed out

of there, but he blew it on the

0:19:140:19:19

finish S. Got a little high and

floated out as he went into the

0:19:190:19:26

second turn, the right-hander, and

missed the apex, didn't get onto the

0:19:260:19:31

date, skied a lot longer route,

which cost him a half a second at

0:19:310:19:34

the finish. -- didn't get onto the

gate.

0:19:340:19:38

Number seven in the start, Dominik

Paris. Already a winner in downhill

0:19:380:19:42

this season. Let's see if he can add

to his tally. Paris, a big, powerful

0:19:420:19:51

man. Oh, look at this, two

hundredths off the pace Beat Feuz.

0:19:510:19:57

As he comes swinging in. He has to

get this right, brakes on very

0:19:570:20:05

slightly before the start. Landed

early, skimmed, took off again,

0:20:050:20:08

touched down for the 0.65 behind,

heading in the wrong direction for

0:20:080:20:15

Dominik Paris. He's got work to do.

As far left as he dares, then a sort

0:20:150:20:23

of soft snowplough with the skis on

the way in, and a slightly high line

0:20:230:20:28

on the way out, but the speed is

solid, and a good line, unorthodox

0:20:280:20:34

but effective, and there's a train

overhead is Dominik Paris comes out

0:20:340:20:37

from under the bridge, going like a

train. 109.1 kilometres per hour.

0:20:370:20:44

His straight speed is good, but

somewhat lacking on the clock,

0:20:440:20:47

almost a second off the pace of Beat

Feuz. Hard on the right ski, a big

0:20:470:20:55

hole. That was coming off the tales

of his skis, a sign he is just

0:20:550:20:59

applying the brakes. He is supremely

fit, but this race takes it out of

0:20:590:21:04

the very best of the Alpine ski

racers, such are its demands. Nobody

0:21:040:21:11

faster there, quickest time of the

day. 146 kilometres per hour, just

0:21:110:21:17

stood slightly told off the silver

horn, and now he is more than a

0:21:170:21:23

second removed from the target time.

That was set so far by Beat Feuz,

0:21:230:21:29

who was wearing number one. Fatigue

creeping in to Paris's run. You'll

0:21:290:21:34

be glad to cross the line. He has

gone forth.

Dominik Paris, quick on

0:21:340:21:40

the top part of the course, but he

lost speed on BS and then a bit

0:21:400:21:47

more. He is big and powerful and

good at the glide, but he couldn't

0:21:470:21:53

carry the speed for the tight,

technical terms.

Number eight, from

0:21:530:21:58

Italy. Christof Innerhofer, fourth

in final training. They had two

0:21:580:22:04

training runs over the full course

in the build-up to race day. It was

0:22:040:22:10

a difficult preparation, because of

the high wind following Storm

0:22:100:22:15

Eleanor, which destroyed some of the

hospitality areas. They had to work

0:22:150:22:18

around the clock with literally

thousands of people helping out to

0:22:180:22:22

get it ready for downhill day.

Innerhofer does a little double hop.

0:22:220:22:29

Barely got airborne there. Not quite

the speed we've come to expect from

0:22:290:22:36

Christof Innerhofer, who hasn't had

a great season by his high

0:22:360:22:38

standards.

0:22:380:22:45

standards. 107.2 foot oh, he's in

trouble. Oh, my word! A big hit for

0:22:450:22:49

Christof Innerhofer. It's like a

chicane on a street circuit, like

0:22:490:22:55

Monaco, no room to run out on the

corner.

Innerhofer came into the

0:22:550:22:59

first turn really late, just managed

to miss the first net but then had

0:22:590:23:05

no direction and couldn't avoid the

padding on left hand of he looks OK.

0:23:050:23:12

-- the left-hander. He looks OK.

Ready to races Matthias Mayer, the

0:23:120:23:18

Olympic downhill champion who has a

fierce competitive streak, whether

0:23:180:23:21

it's on the piste or the golf

course. Thankfully, the Austrian is

0:23:210:23:27

considerably better on skis than

with the putter foot he held out for

0:23:270:23:31

an ace on the Lauberhorn today.

Matthias Mayer, potentially be first

0:23:310:23:39

of the Austrian contingent, second

fastest in first training earlier in

0:23:390:23:42

the week. He's never won on the

Lauberhorn. He will head to Jung

0:23:420:23:48

Chang in defence of his Olympic

downhill title next month. -- he

0:23:480:23:57

will head Pyeonchang. Nicely done,

thrusting his hands forward, just a

0:23:570:24:03

squat to prejudge it. Clever, not

getting too much air and standing

0:24:030:24:10

early on that left ski to continue

the turn. To this narrow gully.

0:24:100:24:15

106.9. His entrance speed. On the

way out, he clocked 70.3, as he

0:24:150:24:25

dives down under the railway bridge.

Feuz's next split, 1:27.68, and

0:24:250:24:35

Matthias Mayer is nearly a second

off the pace, 108.9 through the next

0:24:350:24:40

speed trap, off into the woods.

Relatively flat, long, sweeping

0:24:400:24:45

turn. Has to stand tall for this

big, right footed turn, which he

0:24:450:24:52

executes smoothly. Wrapping the body

shaped ski poles around the body.

0:24:520:24:57

All the top racers spent plenty of

time in the wind tunnel, perfecting

0:24:570:25:02

the best possible shape. 1:46.2

here. That's around 90 mph.

0:25:020:25:11

Clattering the control gate on the

silver horn. We have seen speed in

0:25:110:25:17

the past of 100 hours per hour, but

not this year. Just a bit slower.

0:25:170:25:21

Matthias Mayer edging closer to a

place in the top three. I'm not sure

0:25:210:25:29

he will beat Beat Feuz, but he is

third, on the podium.

Matthias Mayer

0:25:290:25:35

not quick on the top part of the

course, but when the course

0:25:350:25:40

conditions changed and we went on to

that harder, more icy snow lower

0:25:400:25:44

down after crossing under the Rob

Lee bridge, the F above, he's beat

0:25:440:25:52

brilliantly. -- under the railway

bridge. Picking up time all the way

0:25:520:25:55

down but not enough to challenge

Feuz or Svindal.

0:25:550:26:02

Feuz or Svindal.

And is why Kelt has

won period before.

0:26:030:26:10

won period before. He won here in

2015. He knows his way down this

0:26:100:26:13

mountain, the Austrian veteran. A

slightly sluggish start, 0.66 off

0:26:130:26:18

the pace, as he dives off. A good

jump. Barely moved from the tuck

0:26:180:26:25

position. That was a jump of real

experience from Hannes Reichelt, but

0:26:250:26:32

I don't know if he's got a problem

the ski setup. The time is heading

0:26:320:26:37

away from him, more than a second

down now, and clocking that on the

0:26:370:26:44

entrance at 108.3 and, on the

entrance, 73.4.

0:26:440:26:55

entrance, 73.4. Feuz Switzerland

leading. Hannes Reichelt of Austria

0:26:550:27:00

is within a second, and clocking the

fastest speed of the lot on the way

0:27:000:27:03

out of the railway line, 122.

Difficult for the athletes to adjust

0:27:030:27:11

there, with the change in vision.

Again, it comes here, into the shade

0:27:110:27:16

for a moment. And now this speckled

sunshine down towards the next turn.

0:27:160:27:25

Takes off, tucked in, looking to

gather speed on the quickest part of

0:27:250:27:28

the course. Oh, and it is quick,

nobody has been faster there! 91 mph

0:27:280:27:33

plus four Hannes Reichelt of

Austria. Easy off the silver horn.

0:27:330:27:39

Still within touch of Beat Feuz's

lead. Has he got the fitness in his

0:27:390:27:46

legs to keep it going for this

crucial final ten seconds? Hannes

0:27:460:27:55

Reichelt is fourth. He's just missed

the podium.

Good, aggressive skiing

0:27:550:28:01

on the lower part of the course.

Look a little hit on BS, shady and

0:28:010:28:08

dark, and you can see his outside

ski bouncing around, but he was

0:28:080:28:11

attacking and charging on the ice on

the lower part. Very similar to his

0:28:110:28:20

team-mate with where he cost his

race.

Number 24 Austria, Vincent

0:28:200:28:27

Crick Meyer, 13th in the season-long

world downhill standings after four

0:28:270:28:34

races, Lake Louise in Canada, beaver

creek in Colorado, one more and

0:28:340:28:39

Bormio. This is the first serious

test. Wengen in all its glory, and

0:28:390:28:51

Vincent Kriechmayr took that like a

pro. That was superb. Oh, he is

0:28:510:28:56

close. Within half a second of the

lead of Beat Feuz. Beat Feuz's face

0:28:560:29:02

on the board on the grandstand,

staring down at his rivals as they

0:29:020:29:07

try to take the lead away from the

big Swiss racer, who waits at the

0:29:070:29:12

bottom in the leader 's chair,

watching everything unfolding on the

0:29:120:29:16

big screen. Vincent Kriechmayr under

the bridge and away, 1:27.68 is the

0:29:160:29:22

target. 110.2 through the gun, all

going well so far four Vincent

0:29:220:29:29

Kriechmayr, aiming to be the best of

the Austrians, aiming to beat the

0:29:290:29:33

Swiss. Got to be early, standing on

that right ski. Decent entrance, and

0:29:330:29:41

exit. Bounced around slightly still

lots of to deal with.

0:29:410:29:48

Now he plunges down the

Haneggschuss, ski spread wide. 145.

0:29:480:29:57

It is quick enough. He could do some

damage to the top of the leaderboard

0:29:570:30:01

in Wengen in 2018. Slightly

off-balance on the Silberhornsprung.

0:30:010:30:07

That was not the best part of

Kriechmayr's run so far. Now the

0:30:070:30:15

energy sapping downhill track takes

its toll. Kriechmayr rolls of the

0:30:150:30:19

final jump and crosses the line to

go into sixth place.

Good skiing

0:30:190:30:28

from Kriechmayr, putting three

Austrians in the top six, but on the

0:30:280:30:31

Swiss is on the top of the podium.

It bodes well for Kitzbuehel next

0:30:310:30:36

weekend. It will be a real rivalry

between nations. What feels better,

0:30:360:30:42

your victory here today are your

first victory in 2012?

TRANSLATION:

0:30:420:30:48

They were both unbelievable. In 2012

I was in such a role. It was an

0:30:480:30:54

unbelievable season, right up to the

end. Now after lots of injuries I am

0:30:540:30:59

back again. There were not many

people who thought I could come back

0:30:590:31:01

and to be back on top in Wengen is

fantastic.

I here you have been

0:31:010:31:08

cutting off the corners as much as

you can?

Yes, I have some pieces of

0:31:080:31:13

the safety net is left and my

shoulder. It is really fast going in

0:31:130:31:21

there today, and the exit was

tricky.

Feuz is the winner in Wengen

0:31:210:31:29

for the second time in his career,

ahead of the evergreen Svindal. The

0:31:290:31:36

Olympic downhill champion, Mayer,

was third. In the day's slalom in

0:31:360:31:43

Wengen, Marcel Hirscher took his

first-ever career victory on the

0:31:430:31:47

piste, making it four wins in a row

this season. Britain's Dave Ryding

0:31:470:31:53

field to finish. Sofia Goggia led an

Italian clean sweep in the downhill.

0:31:530:32:03

British skier Izzy Atkin the an

excellent bronze medal in the

0:32:030:32:10

slopestyle competition in Aspen. Her

team-mate finished sixth in the

0:32:100:32:12

men's final. In an incredible

snowboard final, Sean White to

0:32:120:32:18

victory with an incredible score of

100, securing his spot in the US

0:32:180:32:23

squad.

0:32:230:32:28

squad. This is coming up on the BBC.

Freddie also sees the start of two

0:32:280:32:34

days of coverage from this

tournament. A quality field will

0:32:340:32:38

compete in snowboard slopestyle and

half pipe, with both competitions

0:32:380:32:42

live on the BBC Sport website. Ski

Sunday Kallis extra continues next

0:32:420:32:48

Sunday. That is live on the red

button.

0:32:480:32:54

At elite level, whether it's

in alpine or freestyle,

0:32:540:32:56

the pace of life and competition

is frantic, always moving

0:32:560:32:58

and hard to keep up with.

0:32:580:33:01

Understandably, the athletes

and the world they exist in seems

0:33:010:33:05

out of reach.

0:33:050:33:06

But what makes the sports we love

so great is that anyone can do them.

0:33:060:33:11

And if you need a little convincing

of that, Ed's been to meet someone

0:33:110:33:14

who defies body and mind every time

she straps on her snowboard.

0:33:140:33:20

I tend myself very lucky to have met

some of the best skiers and

0:33:230:33:27

snowboarders in the world. The

inspirational people, but they

0:33:270:33:30

usually exist in the mountains.

Today I'm going to meet in

0:33:300:33:34

Basingstoke. I have come to meet

Rachel, or Chase, as she prefers to

0:33:340:33:39

be called. She has had to face many

challenges in her life, which

0:33:390:33:44

includes a form of autism called

Asperger's, and she has also been

0:33:440:33:47

diagnosed with a rare genetic

condition which affects the tissue

0:33:470:33:51

that basically holds her body

together and therefore puts her at

0:33:510:33:56

incredibly high risk of severe

injury. Despite the setbacks, it has

0:33:560:34:00

not stopped her love of snowboarding

and she wants to push herself one

0:34:000:34:05

step further with her first trip to

the mountains, no matter how

0:34:050:34:08

daunting it might be.

It is massive.

It is very difficult. Yes, I am

0:34:080:34:15

getting stressed. Good boy. Sit. I

have Asperger's syndrome, which is a

0:34:150:34:21

problem of social communication and

executive function. So,

0:34:210:34:25

understanding what people mean when

they are talking, but also things

0:34:250:34:28

like my working memory is really

bad. My impulse control is bad, my

0:34:280:34:34

emotional regulation is bad. All of

the kind of ways that people

0:34:340:34:40

mentally manage themselves, I

struggle with that. It is endless

0:34:400:34:44

thinking. Every sensory input that

comes into my body I have to

0:34:440:34:49

consciously process. Sometimes it

overwhelms you, your overloaded. I

0:34:490:34:52

also have a connective tissue

disorder. Connective tissue is

0:34:520:34:58

everywhere, it is what glues

everything together in your body.

0:34:580:35:02

For me, they hurt all the time, and

partial dislocation is every day,

0:35:020:35:08

multiple times every day. It also

affects the autonomic nervous system

0:35:080:35:11

is I find it hard to regulate my

temperature. My body does not adjust

0:35:110:35:16

very well if I stand up. I always

joke about the fact that this messed

0:35:160:35:21

up my entire body and then as

burgers messed up my brain.

I am

0:35:210:35:25

broken head to toe. With all of

that, what an error made you think

0:35:250:35:30

that snowboarding would be a good

idea?

I have always loved snow. With

0:35:300:35:35

the understanding I have come to

with my diagnosis, it makes perfect

0:35:350:35:39

sense. Snow deaden sound. Everything

is quiet. Because everything is

0:35:390:35:44

white, visually it is much easier

for me. Since my nervous system got

0:35:440:35:50

worse and my temperature control got

worse, it is cold, so every other

0:35:500:35:54

sport, I would overheat within five

minutes. I could not do it any more.

0:35:540:35:59

I still overheat, but I can do it a

bit longer.

Understanding all of

0:35:590:36:06

that, how big is the task of leaving

this environment and going out to

0:36:060:36:10

the mountains?

It is utterly

terrifying. I have never done it

0:36:100:36:14

before, I do not know how I will

cope. I do not know how much I will

0:36:140:36:19

be able to do when I am there. But

at the same time, a big part of me

0:36:190:36:25

is thinking, why did you learn to

snowboard if you were not going to

0:36:250:36:28

go and snowboard? It is so easy when

your world is so small to give into

0:36:280:36:34

it, and to say, I cannot do

anything. I do not want the

0:36:340:36:39

conditions to win. I do not want to

feel that I cannot do anything so I

0:36:390:36:42

have to try something. Stupidly I

thought I would try this.

So far,

0:36:420:36:51

Chase is only ever ridden here at

the Snow centre in Hemel Hempstead.

0:36:510:36:55

It is a long way from the mountains

but a great place to get to grips

0:36:550:36:59

with snowboarding. I thought I would

tag along for the red and see she

0:36:590:37:04

was ready for the piste.

When did

you learn? I started about five

0:37:040:37:08

years ago. It takes me a really long

time to learn physical things. I

0:37:080:37:13

have got to build up so much extra

strength jewelled myself together,

0:37:130:37:16

and because I have got to get over

all the anxieties. I just should not

0:37:160:37:21

have picked snowboarding really. But

I love it. I love how kind of free

0:37:210:37:26

it feels, when you get it right.

When you do not get it right it is

0:37:260:37:30

frustrating but when you get it

right, it is amazing, like flying.

0:37:300:37:35

Let's go flying.

0:37:350:37:41

You have got it. You are so fast I

am having trouble keeping up. There

0:37:420:37:49

was a bit of worry in me that taking

her out to the mountains might just

0:37:490:37:55

have been a step too far, but she

has got a really, really solid,

0:37:550:37:59

strong style. I am confident that

when we get her out of the mountains

0:37:590:38:03

she will be right.

0:38:030:38:10

she will be right. -- to the

mountains. This is the ideal resort

0:38:100:38:13

for someone like Chase with

additional needs, because there are

0:38:130:38:17

lots of blue and green runs, which

makes it beginner and family

0:38:170:38:21

friendly. When you look at the map,

you see the sheer size of the

0:38:210:38:26

mountain. There is lots of Chase to

deal with. She has already been here

0:38:260:38:29

for one day. Hopefully it has gone

well. Unfortunately when I met up

0:38:290:38:35

with Chase it was clear right away

that things had not gone well the

0:38:350:38:39

day before and her confidence was at

rock bottom.

I was feeling awful

0:38:390:38:42

yesterday. I thought it was a

massive waste of time. I felt

0:38:420:38:48

unsteady. Why have you taken me on a

run that is steeper than what I have

0:38:480:38:52

ever done before by a long way? I

thought it was too much to ask of my

0:38:520:38:59

body and my brain.

This was a major

setback for Chase, but she had come

0:38:590:39:02

this far, so I was determined to get

her back on the slopes and help

0:39:020:39:07

regain the confidence, that I had

seen at Hemel Hempstead.

Super slow

0:39:070:39:14

on your heels.

It is already going

better than yesterday. Brilliant.

0:39:140:39:20

You are doing incredibly, really,

really well.

I have done a slope and

0:39:200:39:25

I did not fall. I want to go faster.

You're starting to make that look

0:39:250:39:32

really is the. Yes. Lovely, great

control.

0:39:320:39:40

My goodness. My goodness. That was

amazing. The speedier getting and

0:39:430:39:50

the control you have got between

your edges is incredible. That was

0:39:500:39:55

really fun.

Yes. It was scary but it

was really fun.

That is exactly when

0:39:550:40:01

it gets good. Again. That was fun.

Again? Right.

0:40:010:40:15

I get the impression

that filming with Chase

0:40:150:40:17

taught you a thing or two,

Ed?

0:40:170:40:23

Definitely. It changed the way I had

looked at the mountain. Chase had

0:40:230:40:27

come from an artificial slope to the

variables of the mountain, that

0:40:270:40:31

different terrain. I was terrified

for, but it reinforced my belief in

0:40:310:40:35

the mountain's ability to inspire.

That was the point of the film.

0:40:350:40:41

Chase did so well. If it has

inspired you, if you have additional

0:40:410:40:46

needs or no anyone who could benefit

from the mountains, there is no

0:40:460:40:49

shortage of organisations in the UK

who could help. Good places to start

0:40:490:40:55

our disability sport UK, and there

are no shortage of holiday companies

0:40:550:40:59

who all have bespoke programmes for

people with additional needs.

If you

0:40:590:41:03

can, get out to the mountains.

0:41:030:41:08

Now it's time for Ski Social.

0:41:080:41:10

Last week we asked for your

pictures and videos,

0:41:100:41:12

and you didn't disappoint.

0:41:120:41:13

We even said we didn't expect

you to match Paddy Graham,

0:41:130:41:16

but you know what, you gave it

a good go.

0:41:160:41:18

It's given us a great glimpse

of the next generation, and a nice

0:41:180:41:21

variety of skis and snowboards.

0:41:210:41:22

Clip of the week goes

to 13-year-old Ethan.

0:41:220:41:24

An absolutely stomping

a double back flip.

0:41:240:41:27

Nice work. We will see you in

Beijing, 2022.

0:41:270:41:33

We've had some questions, too.

0:41:330:41:34

Shreevo wants to take his wife

to a World Cup race for her 40th

0:41:340:41:37

birthday and wants to know

which one you'd recommend?

0:41:370:41:40

If you want de Monte Carlo ski

racing, it has got to be Kitzbuehel,

0:41:400:41:44

it has the crowds, celebrities,

Arnold Schwarzenegger. Come on. If

0:41:440:41:50

you want a really nice, quiet,

relaxing trip away before Christmas,

0:41:500:41:55

how about Italy.

The Dolomites,

beautiful scenery and great skiing.

0:41:550:42:00

You did not specify, Shreevo,

whether you wanted a ski Arsenal

0:42:000:42:05

World Cup, so this is our

equivalent. It is next week, the

0:42:050:42:09

biggest snowboard competition on

European soil. If you want to try it

0:42:090:42:13

yourself, you have got the P 60, an

enormous snow park full of

0:42:130:42:18

holiday-maker level jumps and

drills.

0:42:180:42:22

Sarah has asked for tips

on skiing bumps and moguls.

0:42:220:42:27

I feel a practical demonstration

coming on. She did not specify

0:42:270:42:30

whether it was on a snowboard or

skis. We are in Wengen, and it is a

0:42:300:42:37

T-bar called Bombs, with bombs on

it.

Awesome, two of my favourite

0:42:370:42:42

things.

0:42:420:42:48

When you are skiing moguls, the most

important thing to do is to plant

0:42:530:42:58

your pole on top of the bomb and

extend and flex your legs do.

0:42:580:43:05

Personally, I prefer to do moguls

when they have got a bit of powder

0:43:050:43:11

on them.

0:43:110:43:13

That's all we have

time for this week.

0:43:130:43:15

Next week, we are in

the aforementioned Kitzbuehel

0:43:150:43:16

for the biggest race

on the downhill circuit.

0:43:160:43:18

Yes, it's a party town

in Austria where the fans

0:43:180:43:21

flock for a good time,

but the mood for the racers,

0:43:210:43:23

and Graham, takes

a slightly darker tone.

0:43:230:43:25

You're not scared are you, Graham?

0:43:250:43:30

You know what they say, feeders

and's best friend. We will see you

0:43:300:43:35

next week.

0:43:350:43:40

next week. -- fear is a man's best

friend.

0:43:420:43:49

friend.

The toughest start to any

downhill course.

0:43:490:43:56

It just throws you in a deep end.

0:43:590:44:07

And we are crossed the line.
