You come off the M1, go down the Parkway, wherever you are coming

:00:37.:00:44.

from. It's special. It's our annual pilgrimage to the home of snooker.

:00:45.:00:50.

Wherever you walk there's always a bit of history, there's always

:00:51.:00:53.

pictures of previous finals and stuff like that. The playing arena

:00:54.:00:55.

itself is quite incredible. It's probably the greatest snooker

:00:56.:01:05.

playing arena that we've played in. It's a great atmosphere and

:01:06.:01:08.

obviously it's the World Championships. It has a special

:01:09.:01:14.

feeling about it. It can do the best two weeks of your life when you are

:01:15.:01:18.

there playing for the world title and if you manage to win it there's

:01:19.:01:20.

nothing like it, the feeling. Try getting involved. The booing and

:01:21.:01:36.

dying. It makes it magical. -- the oohs and aahs. That's where some of

:01:37.:01:42.

the most iconic moments of our game took place. You walk into that

:01:43.:01:45.

arena, that's where those matches happened, that is where Alex brought

:01:46.:01:50.

out the family for the shot, where Dennis won in 85, where Cliff made

:01:51.:01:56.

147 and all the players after, it happened in that room.

:01:57.:02:04.

Hello, good evening to you, welcome to highlights of Day one of the 2016

:02:05.:02:11.

Betfred World Snooker Championship. A quest to deliver one of the most

:02:12.:02:15.

coveted titles in British sport begins right here. It's all eyes on

:02:16.:02:18.

the reigning champion, Stuart Bingham. Ladies and gentlemen, your

:02:19.:02:23.

champion, Stuart Bingham! Obviously a bit of a blur after it

:02:24.:02:38.

last year. I've zonked out for three weeks after. I don't know if it has

:02:39.:02:44.

sunk in. I think being here amongst all the players and seeing it all

:02:45.:02:48.

happen again, yeah, I think it obviously slowly sinking in. Seeing

:02:49.:02:54.

the boards and all that with my name on it, yeah, it's great, absolutely

:02:55.:03:03.

fantastic. I've been out onto the stage floor and ceiling it, back to

:03:04.:03:09.

the two tables, it is a bit weird but it seems like yesterday I was

:03:10.:03:14.

here winning it. It's nice walking around Sheffield and getting

:03:15.:03:17.

stopped, for pictures, and things like that. It's all brilliant.

:03:18.:03:25.

I've had it near enough four years for myself. I've given it

:03:26.:03:31.

.. E-mail:.. Near enough a full year.

:03:32.:03:37.

Just to have my name engraved on it is something I've always dreamt of.

:03:38.:03:40.

-- near enough for year. I need to get my teeth into the

:03:41.:03:52.

match against Ali, can't let him get on top of you. If I can do that I'll

:03:53.:03:57.

hopefully enjoy it out there. And then who knows? If I enjoy it like I

:03:58.:04:05.

did last year. But Bingham has a pretty tough opening match against

:04:06.:04:09.

Ali Carter, who was twice runner-up here at the Crucible. In 2008 losing

:04:10.:04:13.

in the final two Ronnie O'Sullivan. Then losing 18-11 to O'Sullivan in

:04:14.:04:20.

2012. Carter got off to a fantastic start in this match leading the

:04:21.:04:25.

first session five frames to four. They shared two frames in the

:04:26.:04:29.

opening two of the evening session. We picked up with Carter leading

:04:30.:04:31.

6-5. I don't think he was too happy to

:04:32.:05:14.

see the green go in. 12 points to lead. Now he's got to get this brown

:05:15.:05:23.

safe. I don't think there's enough room in behind the brown to go

:05:24.:05:24.

cushion first. Well, this is as straightforward as

:05:25.:06:02.

you can get it, as long as you can hit it right. As we look just at the

:06:03.:06:07.

brown, three quarters ball on the right-hand side. Pink or blue to

:06:08.:06:13.

snooker behind. He's played it well, very well. It could be a telling

:06:14.:06:28.

safety shot come snooker, that. He has a bit of pressure now. These

:06:29.:06:31.

last four colours. You wouldn't believe it, would you?

:06:32.:06:49.

And I miss. The only good thing for Stuart is

:06:50.:07:03.

the cue ball didn't go in the pocket. The referee, Paul Collier,

:07:04.:07:09.

just asking where the cue ball was. I mentioned earlier today, he has

:07:10.:07:17.

the final this year, Paul. He needs to hit this., off the second

:07:18.:07:21.

cushion. If he does, you can get a good shot back here. A bit more

:07:22.:07:31.

pace. Ali will be playing a pot here, so good result for Stuart. The

:07:32.:07:37.

main thing when you are snooker like that is to get the object ball safe,

:07:38.:07:42.

not to leave your opponent the pot on. He's done that. Think of the

:07:43.:07:48.

brown. From the side cushion towards the black. If it had caught the blue

:07:49.:07:54.

full in the face he'd have left brown on. Thankfully for Ali and his

:07:55.:07:58.

supporters, he didn't. I don't know if he can screw it off

:07:59.:08:17.

the side cushion and hit the black. I think brown might be going up and

:08:18.:08:21.

down, he might have to hit the brown too hard to play that shop. Brown

:08:22.:08:29.

just the right of the black, the cue ball across. Just a containing

:08:30.:08:38.

safety. Not a good one, though, he wants to be behind the pink. Could

:08:39.:08:44.

be in trouble after the next shop. -- next shot.

:08:45.:08:59.

You called it, Stephen. An edger, this brown. Dear me. Well, superb.

:09:00.:09:23.

Nothing wrong with the world champion's eyesight.

:09:24.:09:42.

Just deactivated on that and the problem is when you do that you take

:09:43.:09:48.

all the pace out of the cue ball and you don't get any back spin. Trying

:09:49.:09:52.

to stun it in behind the black. This is a gift now for Stuart. Should

:09:53.:10:04.

have been! Where's this brown going? Where is the brown ball going?

:10:05.:10:13.

Surely not! That was a nervy one, wasn't it?

:10:14.:10:21.

It was that far away it nearly had a chance of going in any pocket. This

:10:22.:10:28.

round cuts, you know. It's thin, but it cuts. -- this brown. Now he's

:10:29.:10:39.

missed the blue. A chance. Four points behind. He needs blue, pink

:10:40.:10:45.

and black to get the two frame advantage. There was Stuart Bingham

:10:46.:10:49.

squirming in his seat. He knows what an opportunity he's just missed.

:10:50.:10:55.

Just wants to make sure he gets fairly straight on this pink.

:10:56.:11:02.

Looks pretty good. Pink will put him seven points in front with seven

:11:03.:11:08.

remaining. APPLAUSE

:11:09.:11:22.

Big frame. Over 40 minutes. In it goes. That was a massive

:11:23.:11:48.

frame, as Stephen Hendry said. He only needed brown and blue. He

:11:49.:11:53.

missed brown. Ali Carter cleaned up the four remaining colours. Now two

:11:54.:11:58.

ahead, 7-5, the defending champion in trouble again. STUDIO: It has all

:11:59.:12:02.

the makings of one of the great opening-round matches at the

:12:03.:12:06.

Crucible. They shared the next two frames. We pick up the action in the

:12:07.:12:11.

next frame, Carter to play, leading by ten.

:12:12.:12:18.

In a macro strange way he played the shop. When the pressure is on a lot

:12:19.:12:45.

of players to prefer to stun them in.

:12:46.:12:57.

Here, he's putting all his eggs into one basket, really. Needed to be

:12:58.:13:03.

straight on the brown. Now he's not straight on the brown. In potting

:13:04.:13:08.

the brown he's running to the green. That'll leave him possibly snookered

:13:09.:13:15.

by the brown when he has re-spotted. The yellow to the right middle he

:13:16.:13:21.

could stun the cue ball from the yellow to the green pocket. There

:13:22.:13:35.

you go. That was all about pressure and the fact he couldn't get perfect

:13:36.:13:37.

position on the yellow. So, Stuart has been given a lifeline

:13:38.:13:53.

here. Comes to the table 11 points behind, needs up to and including

:13:54.:13:56.

the pink to close the gap to one frame. How will he play the yellow?

:13:57.:14:13.

On the practice table... This is not the practice table. You go around

:14:14.:14:16.

the table. It's all about judging pace. Needs to run past the blue. He

:14:17.:14:20.

looks to have played it absolutely perfectly. Great shot!

:14:21.:14:49.

A glance at the scoreboard. Six points behind. Brown, blue and pink

:14:50.:14:53.

needed. Another twist in this tale. Absolutely perfect on the pink. When

:14:54.:15:20.

Ali Carter potted the last read it looked for surgeon he was going to

:15:21.:15:26.

win the frame. Missed the brown. Stuart Bingham has done the

:15:27.:15:30.

business. Now just one frame behind. It's getting closer and we're

:15:31.:15:34.

getting nearer the end. 8-7 to Ali Carter. STUDIO: Bingham rattled in a

:15:35.:15:42.

break of 68 to draw level. Bingham trailing, can he go in front?

:15:43.:15:47.

Fairley he can play this for the black if he travels to far to the

:15:48.:15:52.

left middle. Nicely played. He's not been behind in this match

:15:53.:16:53.

since the first frame, which he lost. Is he going to go one frame

:16:54.:17:01.

behind now? At the business end of this match? This is an excellent

:17:02.:17:12.

opportunity for Stuart. As Stephen has alluded to a few times in the

:17:13.:17:17.

last couple of frames, he's looking the more, shall we say, relaxed of

:17:18.:17:25.

the two. It's hard to be lacked in this situation. He's giving himself

:17:26.:17:30.

more time not to make a silly mistake and make an unforced error.

:17:31.:17:39.

Yeah, he seems to be able to brush off disappointment more than Ali

:17:40.:17:50.

Carter. Everyone is different. Different characters and

:17:51.:17:57.

temperaments. Since he came back from the interval, it's almost like

:17:58.:18:09.

he's seen the winning line to early. Before the interval, this was the

:18:10.:18:17.

pot success, 79%. 95%, Ali Carter. Since the interval... Remember, 95%

:18:18.:18:25.

Ali Carter. He is now down to 78%. And Stuart Bingham 93. A complete

:18:26.:18:35.

turnaround in pot success. No matter who you are, you've got to ten three

:18:36.:18:41.

macro balls at this game of snooker. If you are going to get anything out

:18:42.:18:49.

of it. -- you have to pot balls at this game of snooker. I think the

:18:50.:18:56.

worst thing for Ali Carter as he sits there suffering is the fact

:18:57.:19:01.

that he'll be looking back on so many opportunities he's had to have

:19:02.:19:12.

this match sewn up by now. But then I wouldn't count him out. If Stuart

:19:13.:19:19.

wants to win this frame... He's within one frame of victory. Ali

:19:20.:19:24.

could throw off the shackles and come out all guns blazing. I

:19:25.:19:32.

wouldn't assume anything just yet in this match.

:19:33.:20:23.

Landed perfectly on the blue. World it in. The red on the left-hand side

:20:24.:20:30.

of the table available into the right corner. Just a straightforward

:20:31.:20:38.

role in. But of course there is tension in the arms. Got to be a bit

:20:39.:20:47.

careful. He has hit it slightly. But it's OK. He'll play for the pink.

:20:48.:21:10.

Didn't want to risk playing for the pink. Maybe it's a bit tight but you

:21:11.:21:16.

can see by the look on his face he is underhit that. He's not good on

:21:17.:21:24.

the blue at all. Just the wrong side of the blue line. I thought he'd

:21:25.:21:27.

have played for the pink. Maybe the pink is tight. Trying to force it

:21:28.:21:37.

around. He's played this well, he's played this well. This is inch

:21:38.:21:49.

perfect! Beautifully played by Stuart Bingham. Still on course to

:21:50.:21:52.

keep Ali Carter in his seat and go one frame away from victory.

:21:53.:22:22.

There you see it, 49er head, 59 remaining, but not for long. Red and

:22:23.:22:27.

black needed. It's been a good performance, very

:22:28.:23:00.

good performance, from Stuart Bingham. From 8-5 down.

:23:01.:23:33.

88, 40 four. 68. And now this. 74. Back to what he does best, scoring

:23:34.:23:48.

heavily. What a time to do it. Yeah, if you can get this back double on

:23:49.:23:52.

the red, chance of a first century of the match. He's pretty close.

:23:53.:24:00.

It's very close indeed. He's on the black.

:24:01.:24:11.

Needs to slow up. It's OK. This'll be the fifth century of the day.

:24:12.:24:27.

Already had four. It be Stuart's 20th at the Crucible. Willett it'll

:24:28.:24:40.

be interesting to see how the next frame goes because the pressure

:24:41.:24:42.

turns around, now it's Stuart who's ahead. And can see the winning line.

:24:43.:24:53.

Well played. Not since he won the first frame has

:24:54.:25:21.

Stuart Bingham been in front in this match, but he is now, and if he wins

:25:22.:25:25.

one more the defending champion will be in the second round. He leads Ali

:25:26.:25:32.

Carter 9-8. STUDIO: Absolutely. For the first time in this match since

:25:33.:25:36.

the opening frame Stuart Bingham is now in front. It's all about

:25:37.:25:45.

finishing off the job next. And he was right, he hit it too thick. And

:25:46.:25:57.

he's left it. So here's a better chance for Ali now.

:25:58.:26:22.

He's played that quite nicely, he'd love to get the black on this spot.

:26:23.:26:30.

If you've got the black on the spot you can start thinking about winning

:26:31.:26:33.

this frame one visit. He has the angle on this red to play for the

:26:34.:26:36.

black. Say run through and get somewhere

:26:37.:27:38.

near that circle and he'll be OK. -- play the run-through. In actual fact

:27:39.:27:45.

it was another red that would go. In an ideal world, that red he has

:27:46.:27:52.

nudged to the left of the back, he would like to play on that this time

:27:53.:27:55.

around, keep the black available into both corners. Otherwise you

:27:56.:28:00.

restrict your positional side of the shot.

:28:01.:28:05.

Looks to have got his focus back. That's what he needed, a few easy

:28:06.:28:24.

shots. Doesn't want to be just off straight

:28:25.:28:53.

on this lack, if he is dead straight he can screw back, just off

:28:54.:29:04.

straight. I think he is OK. Just a touch of left-hand side.

:29:05.:29:17.

Control Bardwell. -- controlled that well.

:29:18.:29:36.

Street again, so might just play for the red to the right centre. That is

:29:37.:29:45.

good. Played that really well. Dead straight again. Same shot. This

:29:46.:30:28.

time he has played for the gap, the red to the right corner again.

:30:29.:30:35.

Risky, very risky. He has landed on it plumb.

:30:36.:30:50.

Look at that, points scored in the match, 912 - all. This needs a

:30:51.:31:09.

bounce. But one, 49 points the lead, still looking for red, colour, red.

:31:10.:31:17.

Not perfect on this rent. Looked short of pace when he hit that, and

:31:18.:31:23.

a pink is in an annoying place. Will not make this positional shot easy.

:31:24.:31:42.

The yellow is the easiest pot, not guaranteed to get position of the

:31:43.:31:52.

year low, not guarantee to get position off the blue. -- of the

:31:53.:31:58.

blue. Colour and one more red required.

:31:59.:32:03.

He will settle for a red in the middle, he will settle for a red in

:32:04.:32:09.

the middle and that is what he has got. This red will put him 53 points

:32:10.:32:18.

in front, 51 the meaning, little chick of the head from Stuart Binny

:32:19.:32:24.

and -- little shake of the head from Stuart Binny. And maybe the fact we

:32:25.:32:29.

are going to go into a decider. Fairplay to Ali. He has needed a

:32:30.:33:01.

couple of chances in this frame but he stuck at it. I agree, I have to

:33:02.:33:07.

admit he had the look of a beaten man coming into this frame, he

:33:08.:33:12.

didn't look able to focus himself. It has been a great performance,

:33:13.:33:14.

this visit to the table. Just one snooker needed at the

:33:15.:33:33.

moment, if he pots the colour, it is frame over. The cut on the black is

:33:34.:33:42.

the right shot to play. It is gone. We have got other side are now.

:33:43.:33:48.

Opening day, opening match. It is going all the way. Can we see two

:33:49.:33:59.

centuries in a row? It is a straight plant to the corner. That would be

:34:00.:34:01.

incredible. I thought we would have a few twists

:34:02.:34:42.

and turns. More like thrusts and parries. As you say, Stephen, his

:34:43.:34:50.

first shot in this frame seemed the shot of a man who says I will go for

:34:51.:34:57.

them and if they don't go on, I will leave them, but he got a third

:34:58.:35:00.

opportunity and he certainly made the most of it. I take my hat off to

:35:01.:35:03.

him. We source Stuart Bingham make his

:35:04.:35:15.

20th century, this will be Ali Carter's 30th. And it goes, superb.

:35:16.:35:23.

It doesn't matter about the blue, it was a tremendous century and Ali

:35:24.:35:33.

Carter is leading the arena, I don't know why Stuart Bingham is going to

:35:34.:35:36.

set there, he will win for him to come back because we have got a

:35:37.:35:41.

decider, it is 9-9. Utterly brilliant, what a match, final frame

:35:42.:35:46.

decider on the opening day and the defending champion is up against it.

:35:47.:35:51.

Ali Carter had a chance to play a similar type of shot awhile ago but

:35:52.:36:16.

rather than plainly snooker he made the blue safe. It is all about

:36:17.:36:18.

opinions. And that is not close. These are valuable points for Stuart

:36:19.:36:36.

Bingham. Now. He is so conscious of leaving

:36:37.:37:10.

the cue ball to lead a pot mag on. As you see, these are valuable

:37:11.:37:13.

points for Stuart Bingham. Absolutely. If he misses it going,

:37:14.:37:19.

it is off the cushion and leaves it to the middle and that is what he

:37:20.:37:25.

has done. 28 points behind now, Stuart Bingham.

:37:26.:37:33.

APPLAUSE It was always difficult with the cue

:37:34.:37:42.

ball and the object ball being so close together to get the real run

:37:43.:37:46.

through that was required to be nicely on the pink. They like a push

:37:47.:37:56.

shot. If I was Stuart now, I would be making sure of these six points.

:37:57.:38:04.

What a shot he has played here. Does he get the case on the red. Unlucky.

:38:05.:38:17.

Great effort. 21 points behind now. Suddenly, this frame is back in the

:38:18.:38:20.

balance. But once again, that is a poor

:38:21.:38:34.

safety shot from Stewart. He has played so many that are just

:38:35.:38:37.

tentative. You have got to get that ball cushion -- baulk cushion. Where

:38:38.:38:48.

is this red going? It has gone in the pocket? A bit of luck involved

:38:49.:38:55.

in that, but Stuart Bingham only has himself to blame, he should have

:38:56.:38:56.

found all cushion -- baulk cushion. Taking that opportunity to put

:38:57.:39:21.

another ball see. Not certain whether Stuart Bingham can get past

:39:22.:39:27.

the pink to make contact with this red, I think he can. Ali Carter

:39:28.:39:35.

assuming that the yellow is now said, the blue is safe, so two balls

:39:36.:39:41.

that are nice insurance policies for him. He could send this red pretty

:39:42.:39:59.

close to the yellow here. APPLAUSE Didn't fancy it was a lot of pace.

:40:00.:40:11.

Has he got the snooker? He can't, can he? Looking at Ali Carter's

:40:12.:40:19.

phase, he has. -- face. A picture paints a thousand words. We talked

:40:20.:40:25.

previously about Stuart only having himself to blame, but Ali Carter

:40:26.:40:32.

only has his self to blame, he had an easy yellow and an easy snooker

:40:33.:40:40.

in the previous shot. He could have nestled up to the green, only had to

:40:41.:40:47.

hit the green full ball, would have been a very difficult snooker to get

:40:48.:40:48.

out of. Was easy enough swear but he had to

:40:49.:41:10.

judge the pace of it -- easy enough swear of swerve. Could play the pot

:41:11.:41:18.

and can in the yellow away from the site cushion. -- this side cushion.

:41:19.:41:30.

But he knows he is at the point of no return.

:41:31.:41:43.

In the end he played it trying to get on the green. Ali Carter comes

:41:44.:41:53.

to the table 22 points in front. Red and a pink will do. But can he pot

:41:54.:42:01.

this slow enough to play the pink, if he goes up to the green he needs

:42:02.:42:08.

that yellow that he has put safe he could play this to screw off the

:42:09.:42:18.

side cushion. That is what he has done. Great shot.

:42:19.:42:22.

The crown is slipping. This pink to go 29 points in front with 27

:42:23.:42:36.

remaining. And it is end. If Stuart Bingham is

:42:37.:42:54.

going to stay in the tournament he has got to get a snooker.

:42:55.:43:08.

Has to be said, it has been a great performance by Ali Carter from 9-8

:43:09.:43:15.

down, I thought he was a beaten man, his body language, looked like he

:43:16.:43:18.

had nothing left in the tank. I was of exactly the same opinion.

:43:19.:43:41.

Ali Carter went down and played as if that was it. But for a snooker he

:43:42.:43:48.

is going to be in the second round. This is tense and Bingham is still

:43:49.:43:53.

very much in this one. And it looks like he may have got

:43:54.:44:13.

the snooker here. And if he has, Stuart Bingham has got to hit it and

:44:14.:44:20.

has got to get it safe. Otherwise his title defence is over. And he

:44:21.:44:27.

could just get through to it. Getting the ball to run hard.

:44:28.:44:34.

Could that be Stuart's last shot. He has been a great ambassador in the

:44:35.:44:42.

last 12 months. It could be coming to an end. The title of world

:44:43.:44:46.

champion. Right here. Right now. He put up a great defence in the

:44:47.:45:02.

first session of this match. And he has flipped the blue. That does end

:45:03.:45:11.

any hope Stuart Bingham had of staying in this championship that he

:45:12.:45:20.

so gloriously won last year. Stuart Bingham won the first frame went 9-8

:45:21.:45:27.

in front and a great response from Ali Carter to come back and win B

:45:28.:45:36.

match -- win the match 10-9. Great sportsmen to the end, you will be

:45:37.:45:42.

back, no doubt about that, but Ali Carter advances to the second round.

:45:43.:45:47.

Unbelievable, so difficult to get over the line. It was just always

:45:48.:45:53.

good to be a really tight game, you could sense the was going, 5-1, 5-5,

:45:54.:46:01.

9-8. I played a very good decider, Stuart Mr couple of balls but a

:46:02.:46:08.

couple of balls here and there that made the difference. The table was

:46:09.:46:15.

really playing difficult, loads of things, one-cushion escape and it

:46:16.:46:19.

flew off the cushion. We were getting loads of kicks and loads of

:46:20.:46:26.

bounces. I'm delighted to get through, it is hard out there, I

:46:27.:46:30.

don't feel like I am a qualifier, feel fresh as a daisy, got a few

:46:31.:46:34.

days off and I will be back. Well done the captain, in the past few

:46:35.:46:37.

minutes, Joe Bingham gave us his reaction. I beat Hendry my first MP

:46:38.:46:43.

when he was reigning champion. It is not nice to get beaten first round

:46:44.:46:53.

after winning it. It was as tough draw, I made too many mistakes and

:46:54.:46:59.

fair play to Ali Carter. Stuart Bingham out and the Crucible curse

:47:00.:47:03.

strikes again and another former champion is out, Peter Ebdon won it

:47:04.:47:07.

in 2002 has been knocked out I Marco Fu. Easter Road and followed the

:47:08.:47:13.

first round stage for the 12th round in his 23 career appearances in

Sheffield. -- Peter Ebdon has fallen other first-round stage for the 12th

time in his 23 career appearances at Sheffield. Winning frames in one

visit sometimes, Peter did not need to make a mistake to lose a friend,

:47:36.:47:39.

I was winning frames with half chances, so it was going to give me

:47:40.:47:46.

confidence. Was absolutely magnificent. He played brilliance

:47:47.:47:50.

and Agger, some of the best snooker that anybody has played against me

:47:51.:47:56.

in the 23 years I have been here. It was outstanding performance, he

:47:57.:47:59.

played like a world champion and I wish him the best of luck, and

:48:00.:48:03.

incredible performance. Very nice to be here, it is the dream to win the

:48:04.:48:09.

tournament for snooker players. I enjoyed playing at the Crucible and

:48:10.:48:12.

the last few years I have been feeling more confident and

:48:13.:48:16.

comfortable playing at the Crucible and it is nice to be back.

:48:17.:48:26.

Stephen Maguire could exit at the first round stage for the third

:48:27.:48:35.

consecutive year. Both matches will resume at ten o'clock in the

:48:36.:48:40.

morning. Snooker extra follows on BBC One followed by classic matches

:48:41.:48:44.

at the Crucible Theatre and we are back at ten o'clock on BBC Two of

:48:45.:48:50.

the worlds literature project. Good night from us good night, Stuart

Bingham -- the World Snooker Championship.
