Day 7, Part 1 Snooker: World Championship

Betfair Snooker championship. We are into the second round. It was a fine

first session from Shaun Murphy. He was world champion in 2005 and takes

a 6-2 lead into the second session today. Graeme Dott is also a former

world champion and has it all to do It is my favourite tournament. If

you can do well here, you really will love it. It is a great place to

play snooker. I have not had a decent year. I have struggled with

my game. I went to see my coach when I won the world championships a few

weeks ago and he spotted some faults I was doing. I do feel an

improvement coming on. Hopefully I can carry it on and play well. For

some reason people seem to think I play slowly. I am certainly quicker

than a lot of people in the game. I do not understand why I get tagged

the fans take to unlike, like Higgins and Ronnie O'Sullivan, every

bit wants to see them. That is not taking away from the tactical side.

It can be an attacking match but there will be tactical stuff played

as well. Shaun plays the game the right way. He is one of the

favourites to win it and quite rightly so. He is very consistent.

He scores heavy and attacks all the time. It will be a tough match. I'm

experienced enough to know that any time I have been in the final, I

have never thought about getting to the final. I'm in the second round

now but it could be down to a one table situation. I will take it one

day at a time. I know how well I have done and that is all that

matters. Whether or not I get credit whatsoever -- I had no interest. I

wrote to Father Christmas for a Commodore 64 computer because my

mates at score had one. I came down that morning looking forward to

seeing the computer and there was a snooker table. It was a Steve Davis

snooker table. Within a few weeks I have found the local snooker club

and within a few months I had made a 50 break on that little table.

Then, once I got onto the big tables, when I was nine years old,

it went silly then. There are not many outside influences in snooker.

99% of the time you are in control of your own destiny. If you do the

things you can do well enough, you will probably win or get a good

result. That is what I liked about it. In other sports something like a

gust of wind can call something to go wrong in golf, or a bad judge by

a linesman in tennis. In snooker it is up to you. I never get all of it.

It is a fascination for me, trying to master something unfavourable and

trying to do something the best I can -- undertake the ball. You have

to do the best you can on any given day. I do not see snooker as my

job. It is what I do to earn my living but I do not look at it like

a job. To do so is a mistake, I think. A job implies a good's days

work. That is not the life of a sportsman. As a child I took the

decision to go down the sporting week. I understood certain risks

came with that. You might not get the result you want on a given day.

If I wanted security, I would have not chosen this sport. It is in my

blood and what I do best. Shaun Murphy has just left the

practice tables. He is looking very, very focused this morning. The world

number four is in fine form as well. Graeme Dott is carrying the hopes of

a nation at the Championship. If he loses, it will be the first time

since 1988 that has been no Scotsman in the quarter-final. That is our

taking on Barry Hawkins in the all England clash then switch to the red

full house at the Crucible Theatre. We join our MC.

Shaun Murphy was edgy in the opening exchanges but settled down after the

work hard. It is hard to keep it up. I am not as fit as a lot of players

on tour, to be honest. I try my best in every match. I

disagree. I think it is because it is

different. It is getting used to all the changes. I will not be scared.

will not be through a lack of trying.
