Saturday, 1st Round, Afternoon, Part 2 Snooker: World Championship

Good afternoon. It is a one in the Deptford World Snooker Championship.

The team are all here are settling in on the opening day. We're in

Winter Gardens. The action taking place just across the square in the

Crucible. We have been engrossed in the opening session of a match

featuring Shaun Murphy, the runner-up last year and former

champion, and Anthony McGill, the young Scot who made such an impact

on his debut last year, getting to the quarterfinal, where he met Shaun

Murphy in that match. Anthony McGill lost it last year and Shaun Murphy

went on to be runner-up in the final. Two friends apiece, they're

in the middle of frame five. -- frames. We go live to Stephen Hendry

and Dennis Taylor. Thank you very much. A bit of a

careless safety shot earlier from Shaun Murphy.

Black still out of the game. The pink the highest available. No

problem getting to the blue from here.

Would not be a bad idea to pot the blue and then the red and possibly

play for the pink to get it back up to the high scoring end of the

table. It would be better to play for the

pink if he could. Staying with the blue. He's going to have to do it

now with the blues. Just looking to see if it is worth

playing the red to the left of the six. He played for another red

impact. Looking to see if there was a possibility of playing a cannon on

the red and black. Could open the black from this shot.

Not easy to play a cannon on the reds and possibly free the black as

well. Not a good chance just yet but might be after this next shot.

That is OK. The right-hand red pots. The wrong side of the blue though,

needs to keep going. Get back to the reds, it will have

to be the green. The wrong side. 35 in front. He is

back looking at the blue. He looked at the green. Just needs to avoid

the cannon on one of these colours. That is well played. He had a good

angle. This will be a test of his hearing.

-- his cueing. Just the five extra points and

hopefully then a good safety shot. He has that good lead. But there is

no colour on percussion. He has got to be very careful. -- on a cushion.

He does not have to pot the blue, he could flick it onto a Russian and

late a good safety shot. -- onto cushion.

He has taken the five point but the blue is back on its spot so he will

have to be careful. All the colours in open play. 46 point advantage but

still a possible 51. This looks pretty good.

He did well. He did not want to bring that back into play. -- black.

He could knock that in, get on the blue and then bring the black and

red into play. He might have got away with that. Thinking very

positive at the moment. What a shot he tried. Unfortunately for him he

has not left the red. Quite an important stage of the

match for Anthony McGill. Shaun Murphy does not look like his time

on the ball is good at the moment. Missing bees by quite a way so

perhaps his concentration is not quite where it should be. -- missing

bees. He could try to get the lead going into the second session.

It took a look at time to think about it and then not playing a very

good shot. -- a lot of time. If he can get on the blue he can then

cannon into the black and red and maybe then get past the yellow. That

is careless from Anthony McGill. One good shot. And back in the frame.

This could open not only the black up but the difficult red next to it.

If he could just get a cue ball right in the middle of that red and

black -- red and black. That will do. Tough but he has got a

lovely angle on the red. He could play for the black, but I think just

drop it in, leave straight black. I think he is going to have to follow

through. It's just ran a little further than

he intended. Very delicate now, just a couple of inches short of that and

it would have been so easy to pot this. It ran that little bit too

far. He's having to use the rest. And he missed a few with the rest,

after we said he was the greatest player ever to use that implement.

He just made sure of the seven points. Now he has got to try to

play snooker. Just because he did not get on the black as he intended.

It is anyone's frame all of the sudden. Anthony McGill just got

those five extra points a few moments ago. If he had left the blue

on the side cushion it would have been a big advantage.

Just enough room to slip round the back of that red. The green slightly

in the way if he goes down the right-hand side of the table. The

left side seems to be easier. There is more room to get to the red. The

black just a bit awkward to play that swerve shot around the blues.

Slightly in the way. He prefers the right side. Now back looking at the

left side. That is the one. Would be very unlucky to go round the back of

that. He is going to have to play a tough

blue. You felt he was bound to be on a decent blue or pink. In a bit of

no man's land. Needs a snooker. Good shot.

Need another good pot. You think automatically, going to be on the

green. The slightest touch of right-hand side. A little bit

surprised he laid off two cushions. -- played. Now he has got to get the

snooker behind the black. That is his plan.

Came off a little bit square but it hampered Anthony McGill, he only

needs the green. If he was not hampered, a chance he could have cut

this green in, but not now. It shows you that awkward striking

over the lack. -- black. It caused him to miss hit that slightly.

He has missed I think three now with the rest, very unusual for Shaun

Murphy. He could have pinched that frame. Because Anthony McGill looked

favourite and then all of the sudden Shaun Murphy had the chance to take

the frame. One pot and he would get himself into the lead.

He did not worry about position. It was all about making sure of the pot

on the brown. He will want to get this boot in to keep Shaun Murphy in

his seat. -- this blue. And he duly does it. Shaun Murphy a bit ragged

some of his play at the moment, he has got a little bit to think about.

It does not matter about pink Shaun Murphy will stay in his seat. He is

out out of the arena so Anthony McGill has got himself into the

lead. He leads the former world champion by three frames to two.

The world number 30 giving a good account of himself against the world

number three and former champion. There was a shot you picked up

earlier that might have saved him a bit of aggro. He had to rely on

Shaun Murphy missing with the rest. Dennis Taylor pointed out, he's the

wrong side of the blue, three reds left on the table and 41 points

lead. Anthony McGill decides to pot the blue and then played the safety

shot. The blue comes back on the spot and all the colours are in the

open. Dennis Taylor put forward the suggestion that he should forego

potting the blue for the five points because not over the line the frame.

And then it makes it harder for Shaun Murphy to clear up in one

visit. As it turned out he parted the blue and played the safety shot

but then Shaun Murphy was very close to getting back in the frame. It is

amazing, there is the benefit of wisdom and hindsight, but there was

a loose safety shot he played trying to lay that snooker on Shaun Murphy

and that caused all kinds of problems. He was looking at it for

ages and sometimes you can bamboozle yourself. He chipped red and could

have lost the frame. In the end it was Shaun Murphy failing to pot the

brown. Again with the rest. He does not look totally comfortable out

there and so many times at the Crucible we have seen the first

round match, the favourite laying only in the best of 19 as opposed to

the next round, best of 25. The players still feel under pressure,

that best of 19 is not long enough to get your teeth into it. One

observation you made a potentially looked very fast. On the first day,

we have had a couple of fast bounces and it does not augur well for the

coming days. You do not want fast and reactive cushions on the first

day. And the players in the coming days will be interested to hear that

and they might make adjustments accordingly. It could happen. It is

day one, tomorrow could be a different day where the cushions are

concerned. But we have had a couple of fingers. Observations general

about Anthony McGill? I think he is doing his job. He has not had the

best seasons in shorter frame matches but he seems to get his

teeth into the longer frame matches. He looks comfortable enough out

there to cause problems for Shaun Murphy. He is ahead. On the other

table Alan McManus took the fifth frame with the best break of the

match for him, 78. So it is now 3-2 to Stephen Maguire in that battle of

the Glaswegians. Back we go and this is also 3-2.

Shaun Murphy finds himself behind as we head into the next.

That sounded like a kick. Has not cause problems. We had a few fast

bounces. Did not matter, even though there was a heavy contact. These

boys will finish at ten o'clock tomorrow morning. A long way to go

in this session. What a fantastic shot. Look at how

the white is finished. I think he might be playing the black. That was

an attacking shot and he is unlucky to have finished there. All he can

do is leave the fight tight on the cushion. -- the fight. It could turn

out to be an all -- awkward frame. The safety is on. And that is where

Shaun Murphy is going to leave the cue ball now. He's just going to

drop the black. He wants to cover this red if he can. Because that

would leave Anthony McGill and easy safety shot back. He has not done

that. It is pretty simple for Anthony McGill, just bring the cue

ball back to where it is now. There is a premium on getting the cue ball

tight to the cushion in these situations.

He has pretty much brought the cue ball back, an excellent shot. It

looked simple but it was well played. If Shaun Murphy cannot get

to the bottom of the cue ball he has got a problem.

safety is as difficult as the pot. If he plays this shot the fight is

going to bounce quite a bit. -- white He could roll to that red and

cover everything but he is going to be in trouble again.

middle. The safety is as difficult as the

pot so you might as well go attacking.

A fabulous pot. That is what you would call an

absolute confidence booster. He was leaving Anthony McGill right in

amongst the reds. Best shot of the match so far, without a doubt. And

into the bargain, three two down, not playing great, every chance he

missed it could be 4-2 down. That was the shot of the match so far as

you said. And it might kick-start Shaun

Murphy. I would not be surprised if he does not make enough to win this

frame. Just playing the cue ball into an

area because there's much available. You know you're guaranteed to be on

a red. The black was there, it is not tied up, available into the left

corner. He has got the pink in the open, blue on the spot, a great

chance for Shaun Murphy. He can play for this, the red to the right

middle, that would get him on the black.

The black does not pot into the left corner. He has overscrewed that by

quite a way. There is confirmation that the black is not available.

He gave the table another dubbed the look after that shot. -- filthy. He

has struggled to get pinpoint position at the moment. It does

unsettle the players when conditions are acting unpredictably. You do not

know how hard to hit some shop. -- shots. You cannot play a shot with

the off chance, you play it the way you would normally play it. When it

happens, you look silly. An unbelievable ankle that book! --

angle. Nicely on the blue. Have a look at the side he got on this

shot. Watch the white! An amazing amount of right-hand side.

I said he might make enough to win this frame after that fantastic pot

into the right centre pocket. That really was some shot. He was in all

sorts of trouble. What a shot he pulled out! I thought it would give

him a confidence boost and it certainly has.

Have a look at this! Stephen said he might as well have a go but what a

poll that was! -- a pot. Trying to take the red of the side

cushion to give himself the chance of a century. He has missed the red.

It does not really matter. No century but that read into the

right middle pocket was some shot. He went on to make enough. With that

break of 77, he draws level at three frames all. He does. There could be

an early call even on the first afternoon. There will be shots

played by great players got all types of shot. I think that shot by

Shaun Murphy should wind shot of the championship. He is in all sorts of

trouble and he proves the best form of defence is attack. That is an

absolute screamer! If I had been sitting in my chair, I would say,

have a go at that! He is tight on the cushion, half a pocket, even

less. He could not hit back any better. Absolutely pure and he

deserved everything. Shall we put that on a loop for you? Steve will

be watching that tonight on his iPad. I can assure you. Three frames

to peace and Shaun Murphy looks to have sprang into life. I have had

enough of this, I will try to throw the shackles off. Alan McManus looks

like he might be on the verge of winning the seventh to take a 4-3

lead. I might be jumping the gun but back to this one. I would love to

see that. Steve Davis in bed watching Shaun Murphy pot read into

the middle pocket. -- red. That would be interesting.

Not a bad break off. Having said that, Sean will knock

this in and clear up. I could not see enough to take the pot on but he

would have had he been able to see enough of this red. Three frames

left to play in this first session. Shaun Murphy, as the seed and

favourite, will want to win. He will want to win two of them. The last

thing he will want is to go into tomorrow plus Max session behind. --

tomorrow's session behind. That was a lovely shot! He controlled the

cannon. That was really well played. That is unforgivable, I am afraid,

it really is. After putting that fantastic read to the left-centre...

-- fantastic red. He might have nightmares about that red tonight.

I keep saying, in snooker, no matter how easy the shot is, you need full

concentration. It is amazing what can be missed when you lose that

little bit of concentration. He was not even thinking about the red, he

was thinking about how to get the position. It was an amazing miss

from him. Shaun Murphy accidentally cannoned

into that and knocked it safe. Does he have enough angle? He has

enough angle. It looks as if he has and it will go straight onto the

red. We will show you the cannon again. That error from Anthony could

cost him. That's black, the way that Shaun Murphy played it, maybe three

or four players in the game have the cube power to do that, to generate

the speed. -- DQ power. Fantastic to have that power in your

armoury. It makes break-building so much

easier. All of a sudden, you can tell by the

body language of Shaun Murphy, how confident he is feeling. It is all

down to that last frame and the magnificent red. It has given him a

real confidence boost. He looks to be in control now.

It looks as if this bad miss took his eye off the frame. It will cost

him. He needs the pink and one more red.

The frame will be in the bag. You need to read signs in matches.

After that fantastic last frame and anti Niemi Gill missing -- Anthony

McGill missing that read, it is about knowing how to put the hammer

down stop -- that red. Another long hard stare at the cushion by Shaun

Murphy. The Green would be enough to lead Anthony leaving Jason --

needing a snooker. Shaun Murphy has made 379 centuries

in his illustrious career. He is just on 23 this season. Just the

black to give him his first century. We have got a few turn up banners

here. Take it off this time to try to make

the clearance. I do not know if his preference is a double or a travel.

I know you would prefer a double. Shaun Murphy gets himself into the

lead at four frames to three. Yes, he knows his way around the

Crucible, but so does Alan McManus. Having been 3-1 down to Stephen

Maguire, here he is in the seventh frame on his way to a break. He has

won all three frames since the interval and leave this match

against his friend and playing partner, Stephen Maguire, 4-3. He is

the joint oldest in this year's petition. He has responded from the

deficit 3-1. McManus is in the driving seat. That is the situation.

badly needs to get back on track. He did not have much chance in the last

frame. 76 in the previous frame. The very easily missed red into the

corner pocket cost him the last frame. He cannot afford to miss

them. This was a sitter. He took his eye off the pot.

That has gone wrong. Maybe drifted slightly. It was a delicate shot he

was trying. As he sits down... He is just having a quick look in one of

the monitors. He knows if Sean can get onto a colour, he is in with a

very good early chance. -- Shaun Murphy.

I think you mentioned it early on in this match, when Shaun Murphy gets a

couple of frames in France when he is a fantastic front runner. -- in

front. He can steam roller any player when he gets on a run.

He will definitely have a 6-3 lead on his mind now, Shaun Murphy. He

seems to have stepped up a gear. Did he get a heavy contact? I think

he might have turned. Cut this in with the rest. -- he might have

done. The red did not seem to jump but the white did slightly. Not on

the black as he intended. A good recovery. I think he can put that

next to the black and avoid cannon ink into the black and get nicely

onto it again. -- cannoning. He looks a different player now.

Sometimes, top players, in these long matches, there will be times

when you go out of position. Here it is again. You can be a bit flat in a

match in your concentration and sometimes you need inspiration to

get you going. I think that is what has happened with Shaun Murphy.

Meanwhile, he has misjudged his position. It looked as if he would

clinch this frame with one visit. He will have to wait for another

chance. He just went astray of that last positional shot.

This was the shot that he'd played. He was straight onto the black. Not

enough reverse side on it. He must still be careful in this

frame. He knows if he can go 5-3 in front, he is bound to have an

overnight lead. Just one more frame to be played in this session.

One good long pot from Anthony and he could possibly get right back

into this frame. He is 55 behind. He can compose himself and pot a good

long red in. The chance is there. He is looking

to see if he can leave a read. As we show you this terrific part, he has

an angle to bring the five reds into play. -- terrific pot. Not quite
