The World Championship to me and every snooker player I suppose, just

:00:40.:00:48.

means to be world champion. It's a title everybody wants to win, every

:00:49.:00:55.

player striving to win that title. Being world number one is a great

:00:56.:00:58.

feeling and definitely one of my goals starting out, to become world

:00:59.:01:03.

number one and world champion, if I could achieve that, I would be happy

:01:04.:01:10.

even if I was to retire tomorrow. It's just those little fine lines

:01:11.:01:13.

which is the difference between winning and losing and the

:01:14.:01:16.

difference between a champion and not a champion. It can be like just

:01:17.:01:25.

here and there, winning or losing a match. You get out of the sport what

:01:26.:01:31.

you put in and if you don't put the hours in, that talent counts for

:01:32.:01:38.

nothing. Never say die until that last ball is potted because until

:01:39.:01:43.

that moment, you've still got a job to do. I put that waistcoat on and

:01:44.:01:49.

my name is called and I go into the arena and I make my opponent work as

:01:50.:01:53.

hard as possible. Mark Selby very much the man to

:01:54.:01:57.

beat. Good evening and welcome to the Crucible Theatre. We are

:01:58.:02:01.

celebrating 40 years of snooker at this magnificent venue and this is

:02:02.:02:06.

what it is all about. Mark Selby will be walking out in front of a

:02:07.:02:10.

packed crowd here at the Crucible in the next few minutes, looking to

:02:11.:02:14.

book his place in the second round. It's been a magnificent first day

:02:15.:02:20.

here at the 2017 Betfred World Snooker Championship. Let's bring

:02:21.:02:23.

you right up to date. The Rocket Ronnie O'Sullivan got off to his

:02:24.:02:27.

usual fast start. Not at his best but he raced into a

:02:28.:02:39.

5-1 lead. But back came the tenacious Gary Wilson on his

:02:40.:02:43.

Crucible debut. Winning the last three frames and stealing a tense

:02:44.:02:48.

final frame black with this nervous cut. And in another all English

:02:49.:02:59.

battle, the warrior, Kyren Wilson, took control early on but another

:03:00.:03:03.

fine fightback saw David Grace Paul Dummett back to 5-4. -- David Grace

:03:04.:03:16.

polled the match back to 5-4. Anthony McGill had upset the fellow

:03:17.:03:20.

Scott Stephen Maguire on his Crucible debut two years ago.

:03:21.:03:24.

Maguire came roaring back, winning the last five frames to lead 7-2.

:03:25.:03:35.

And world number one Mark Selby got the defence of his title off to a

:03:36.:03:40.

flyer. Stunning cue control and shot selection so he raced to 8-0 lead.

:03:41.:03:47.

His opponent avoided the dreaded whitewash by pinching the final

:03:48.:03:50.

frame but Mark Selby in total control of this one. Live action

:03:51.:03:55.

coming up on BBC Two. We are with you throughout the evening on the

:03:56.:04:00.

red button. Do not go anywhere. Ken Doherty knows what it's like to lift

:04:01.:04:05.

that magnificent trophy at this wonderful venue. We have a packed

:04:06.:04:09.

crowd into night. What is it like coming back as the reigning world

:04:10.:04:13.

champion and the weight of expectation on your shoulders?

:04:14.:04:19.

There is a lot of pressure and Mark Selby will want to put in a good

:04:20.:04:26.

performance. He is world number one and he is guaranteed that

:04:27.:04:28.

anti-platelet medicine need this morning against Fergal O'Brien. I

:04:29.:04:35.

felt bad for my old pal and it was tough but Mark Selby is in very good

:04:36.:04:41.

form. Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, Ronnie O'Sullivan, they have all

:04:42.:04:44.

come back to the Crucible Theatre and retain their title. Is that

:04:45.:04:49.

something that troubles Mark Selby? I don't think so, I think he will

:04:50.:04:52.

relish the opportunity to have that problem. He is a very determined

:04:53.:04:58.

character. He is the man to beat at this Championship. Just won the

:04:59.:05:03.

China Open a couple of weeks ago so he has Camille Lecointre lot of form

:05:04.:05:07.

and confidence. I think the fact that when he has his hands on the

:05:08.:05:11.

trophy twice already, the pressure is on but he wants to win it again

:05:12.:05:15.

and again and be up there with the likes of John Higgins, Ronnie

:05:16.:05:18.

O'Sullivan and Stephen Hendry and all the greats who won it multiple

:05:19.:05:24.

times. On the radio this morning, they were chatting about snooker.

:05:25.:05:29.

Judd Trump was fancied this year. Is this his year? It could be but there

:05:30.:05:35.

are a lot of protagonists in the drawer who have a great chance.

:05:36.:05:38.

Ronnie O'Sullivan in good form today. Shaun Murphy, Neil Robertson,

:05:39.:05:43.

a whole host of players that could possibly witness but the man to beat

:05:44.:05:47.

at the moment is Mark Selby. And he is standing by. Thank you. It's the

:05:48.:05:57.

climax of Day 1 at the Betfred World Snooker Championship and by the end

:05:58.:06:00.

of tonight, two players will have secured their place in the second

:06:01.:06:06.

round. Will there be two big comebacks? It is showtime, here in

:06:07.:06:08.

Sheffield. CHEERING Please welcome, a five-time ranking

:06:09.:06:33.

event winner who this morning brought his form from the qualifiers

:06:34.:06:38.

right here to the Crucible. Twice a semifinalist at the World

:06:39.:06:41.

Championship, he is hungry for another massive run in Sheffield.

:06:42.:06:46.

When he is good, he is on fire, here is Stephen Maguire.

:06:47.:07:05.

And his opponent, a man who made it to the quarterfinals on a very

:07:06.:07:11.

impressive debut here two years ago. Reigning Indian Open and snooker

:07:12.:07:16.

shoot out champion, he will not be intimidated tonight. Hoping to draw

:07:17.:07:20.

on those legendary nerves of steel, the smiling assassin, Anthony

:07:21.:07:21.

McGill. And on table one, the player who has

:07:22.:07:45.

made it back to the Crucible for the first time in seven years. After a

:07:46.:07:50.

two our three minute epic deciding frame-winner with David Gilbert, he

:07:51.:07:55.

now faces a huge task tonight but he will come out determined to show his

:07:56.:07:59.

class. He is the Marathon man, Fergal O'Brien.

:08:00.:08:21.

And finally, a player returning to the Crucible at the end of a season

:08:22.:08:28.

in which he has added another four ranking titles to his collection.

:08:29.:08:32.

Reigning UK and China Open Championship he has been world

:08:33.:08:35.

number one for more than 100 consecutive weeks. The defending

:08:36.:08:39.

world champion, the Jester from Leicester, Mark Selby.

:08:40.:09:00.

Huge cheers for the reigning world champion Mark Selby. That's our live

:09:01.:09:08.

match on BBC Two. Selby versus Fergal O'Brien. If you want Anthony

:09:09.:09:11.

McGill against Stephen Maguire, that is available on your red button. In

:09:12.:09:18.

the company of Dennis Taylor and Peter Ebdon. Live on BBC Two, let's

:09:19.:09:22.

say good evening to you John Virgo and Steve Davis. JOHN VIRGO: Fergal

:09:23.:09:34.

O'Brien as we say has the proverbial mountain to climb.

:09:35.:10:02.

Fergal O'Brien didn't get that many chances early on in the match and

:10:03.:10:09.

you feel he needed a good start. He didn't get that. He was down at 70%

:10:10.:10:19.

at one stage. You need to be 90% or above.

:10:20.:10:25.

LAUGHTER There is another telling stat. A

:10:26.:10:33.

nice break for Fergal, only 32. STEVE DAVIS: He was pretty

:10:34.:10:53.

inefficient this morning, Fergal, he would be disappointed with the day.

:10:54.:10:56.

Experienced enough to know that every session can have a different

:10:57.:11:02.

outcome. But as you say, a mountain decline. -- a mountain to climb and

:11:03.:11:10.

none higher than trying to pull back a lead from our world champion, Mark

:11:11.:11:14.

Selby. You don't expect him to crumble.

:11:15.:11:46.

Pink is a fractional problem here in the escape route, should he catch it

:11:47.:11:53.

a little too thick, don't expect him to... Perhaps it will go the other

:11:54.:12:00.

side, good shot. APPLAUSE Played that with a lot of left-hand

:12:01.:12:08.

spin. I think mark can try and play this

:12:09.:12:27.

firm, come off the top cushion and try to clip a read, there are a

:12:28.:12:28.

couple there. Fergal could try to pot the brown

:12:29.:12:48.

into the top right-hand corner pocket as we look on our TV screen.

:12:49.:12:58.

It's a sort of free shot really. He is following your idea.

:12:59.:13:09.

Could get plenty should he go in. But not quite.

:13:10.:13:22.

I say a shot for nothing, it is the red at the top of the cluster that

:13:23.:13:30.

is available. Possibly Mark could pot this, leaving himself on the

:13:31.:13:32.

pink. Is there any such thing as a shot

:13:33.:13:59.

for nothing? Judging by that shot, that was a little risky. Not an

:14:00.:14:12.

ideal opening but... A couple of good positional shots and it could

:14:13.:14:15.

change things. Probably got something into the centre. Or the

:14:16.:14:21.

yellow pocket. As a last resort. The black at the moment will be

:14:22.:15:08.

available into the right corner. So he gets the brown out of the way...

:15:09.:15:16.

Of course, I'm just looking like the brown may go, the pink... If the

:15:17.:15:28.

pink spot is not available then the brown will go as close to its own

:15:29.:15:32.

spot in a direct line with the middle of the top cushion. That more

:15:33.:15:38.

or less puts the pink and brown out of commission. Needs an angle on

:15:39.:15:49.

this red which he just about has. To run through off two cushions. He

:15:50.:15:56.

could, if he gets low on this black, open up these four reds. Or at least

:15:57.:16:05.

start to open up away from the black spot.

:16:06.:16:16.

I think you would settle for that. Having said that, all the top spin

:16:17.:16:25.

and once the cue ball got put to the bed of the table, it rolled through.

:16:26.:16:29.

Does the black still go to the right corner? Is there a gap for it? If it

:16:30.:16:36.

doesn't, he still has the blue. Obviously, the black doesn't go if

:16:37.:16:44.

you play for them. Got to be said, looks very clinical,

:16:45.:17:02.

getting amongst the balls, very controlled. A sign of confidence,

:17:03.:17:11.

quickly off the mark at the start of every session. The black doesn't go,

:17:12.:17:17.

I don't think, but it's tight. The way those two reds now are, he can

:17:18.:17:21.

play them before he plays the black. If he gets a nice position. On the

:17:22.:17:23.

blue. He has come down for the blue. I

:17:24.:17:38.

don't think he will risk the cannon. He would love to get on the red

:17:39.:17:44.

that's just above him and to the right of the black.

:17:45.:17:58.

That looks about inch perfect to me. 71, the target. That is when snooker

:17:59.:18:15.

's will required. He has come out tonight and he looks a lot sharper.

:18:16.:18:20.

He did have a good start earlier on today but he wasn't winning frames

:18:21.:18:24.

in one visit necessarily. He was feeding off a few mistakes from

:18:25.:18:29.

Fergal. But this is a bit more like the mark Selby we have been seeing

:18:30.:18:31.

most of the season. I also feel that people are making

:18:32.:18:49.

him favourite because you feel the longer matches suit him probably as

:18:50.:18:52.

much of anyone in the game at the moment. I think he is so much in

:18:53.:18:58.

control of his game, his cue action and control of the cue ball, he

:18:59.:19:05.

starts off a session, maybe in top gear but maybe not but by the end,

:19:06.:19:10.

he has built up a head of steam and he's like a juggernaut and it's

:19:11.:19:14.

really tough to stop it by then, he's really in the groove. As all

:19:15.:19:20.

the top players, when they are playing their best, every time they

:19:21.:19:25.

settled down on a shot, the same preparation, cue action exactly the

:19:26.:19:28.

same every time. Robotic. And now just looking for one more

:19:29.:19:48.

red and a colour. The red will put him 67 points in front. If he gets

:19:49.:19:55.

the colour, you think there is no way back to the table for Fergal.

:19:56.:20:04.

Fergal tried to be positive on that brown rather than...

:20:05.:20:15.

He has been punished severely. It was your idea as well.

:20:16.:20:30.

You'd have got the brown, though! This is the highest break of the

:20:31.:20:40.

match. Certainly don't criticise Fergal for

:20:41.:20:56.

playing the free ball because a high break prize, Fergal probably

:20:57.:20:58.

thinking he will be knocked out, could make a break bigger than a 147

:20:59.:21:03.

with that free ball, always a possibility.

:21:04.:21:10.

Only had one century. So far in the Championship. That was Ronnie

:21:11.:21:15.

O'Sullivan. A red and a black and we will see

:21:16.:21:31.

our second. That cost him the frame. Mark Selby

:21:32.:22:06.

notice one frame away from a place in the second round.

:22:07.:22:14.

Welcomed by the way to our brand-new studio for our evening sessions. We

:22:15.:22:21.

will be live with you some evenings from 7pm but throughout the evening

:22:22.:22:26.

every night on the red button from this venue. It's great because we've

:22:27.:22:30.

got the players practising. Marco Fu is there. You just put him off his

:22:31.:22:39.

shot! IMHO he had played it! Mark Selby in imperious form. Yes, a good

:22:40.:22:52.

round. Mark Selby, fantastic. He is in complete control as Steve Davis

:22:53.:22:57.

said, of his cue action. Coming in on really good form and he looks

:22:58.:23:01.

very good. When we look at him on our big screen, he looks much more

:23:02.:23:07.

composed and happier. Do you remember when he won the world title

:23:08.:23:13.

and then came back and lost Anthony McGill. He didn't look in the zone

:23:14.:23:19.

that year. He was a first time winner, coming back as defending

:23:20.:23:23.

champion and nobody has done it. That made him very nervous. He was

:23:24.:23:27.

quite open about that. Looks a lot more confident and in control of his

:23:28.:23:34.

emotions. He's playing very well the moment. He is going to be tough to

:23:35.:23:40.

beat. But he is in a tough half of the draw, very top-heavy. But he

:23:41.:23:46.

will be the man to beat so far. Yes and he is looking for an early

:23:47.:23:47.

finish. JOHN VIRGO: Once again, he just went

:23:48.:23:56.

off the jury if I'm being picky. He had a chance to go into the pack

:23:57.:24:16.

off the green but where these open reds are situated, there is no need

:24:17.:24:17.

for that. He has got that red below the pack

:24:18.:24:31.

that he can use to pot and open the reds at the same time. That seems to

:24:32.:24:39.

be the shot of choice now. He has played, I think, deliberately low on

:24:40.:24:47.

this. But perhaps it's a bit too straight to do too much damage to

:24:48.:24:51.

the pack but he will be screwing back perhaps for the blue. Yes, for

:24:52.:25:02.

the pink. But, I think he wanted a bit more on that. I think it is

:25:03.:25:09.

coming more and more into the game. When you go into a cluster as it is

:25:10.:25:16.

now, you smashed into it, you always trust it but if you can put a red

:25:17.:25:21.

and knock a few out, you are more in control of the situation. Yes and

:25:22.:25:25.

then maybe take a position on the colour so now he has to get the

:25:26.:25:28.

correct angle on the colour. It is more difficult. The blue is a

:25:29.:25:34.

possibility, could spread the reds open and win the match. He is a bit

:25:35.:25:42.

straight on that to generate too much power. Straight into the pack.

:25:43.:25:49.

He's got to belt this if he is playing straight in. Nice effort,

:25:50.:25:52.

got to trust luck now. He could have done with a better

:25:53.:26:03.

angle than the one he had. You don't really get the pace in the cue ball.

:26:04.:26:13.

You need to do it full in the face. You also don't get that much back

:26:14.:26:18.

spin. By the time the cue ball hits the pink. Playing the double.

:26:19.:26:22.

Speculative double in the middle. I'm not going to wonder if he had

:26:23.:26:42.

played that read, perhaps try to get on the blue, whether it would have

:26:43.:26:46.

worked out better. He was right behind the shot he knew. I think he

:26:47.:26:49.

was a bit straight for that. It would appear that Fergal didn't

:26:50.:27:06.

play the pot. If he did, he was a long way out. It begs the question,

:27:07.:27:18.

if not, why not? They are always semi-shots to nothing. That was an

:27:19.:27:22.

excellent shot from Selby, guaranteed position on the black.

:27:23.:27:27.

Doesn't look like any damage done. You don't get many frames in the

:27:28.:27:55.

modern-day game that happen where all the reds are pushed into the

:27:56.:27:58.

Baltic area of the table, used to be a lot more cagey safety at one stage

:27:59.:28:06.

but as we speak, its safety to the top cushion.

:28:07.:28:24.

And with these shots, there is with a premium on getting the cue ball

:28:25.:28:31.

tyke on cushion. To stop your opponents screwing back to the same

:28:32.:28:35.

position. Fergal has spotted something else. He's got a shot to

:28:36.:28:43.

nothing of his own, a cut into the middle pocket. You see the path of

:28:44.:28:55.

the cue ball, it was worth the risk. He's got to take some risks, no

:28:56.:28:57.

doubt. He did play the pot. Mark bringing all the reds into

:28:58.:29:23.

play. Not a bad cue ball. Fergal hasn't had a look at this red to the

:29:24.:29:30.

right middle even though it is a very difficult one. He hasn't even

:29:31.:29:38.

got around to see if that goes. Played an excellent safety shop, is

:29:39.:29:45.

it tight? Once again on our TV screens, this reds to the left

:29:46.:29:49.

middle looks like, why don't you go for it? It looks really easy but

:29:50.:29:53.

because the table is shortened on the TV screen, it is more of a cue

:29:54.:29:59.

angle into the middle pocket. Unless you've got a very big TV screen! But

:30:00.:30:06.

I don't know, if he can't get to that red, he may be forcing him to

:30:07.:30:11.

play that. That's an excellent cue ball. Will

:30:12.:30:23.

Fergal be tempted? This does look like a frame from the

:30:24.:30:38.

past. Rarely does this happen these days. Players tend to be more

:30:39.:30:43.

speculative in their attacking shots. Fergal slightly old school in

:30:44.:30:55.

terms of shots. Mark Selby perhaps playing a more modern game. Fergal

:30:56.:31:03.

an old dog in the game and has learned some new tricks, that's for

:31:04.:31:04.

certain. When we had that wonderful tribute

:31:05.:31:21.

to all the champions last night, the 40th anniversary. I was relaying the

:31:22.:31:28.

stort that Patsy Fegan and when we first came here in '77. We had never

:31:29.:31:33.

played in a two-table situation. We sat at the back and there was hardly

:31:34.:31:39.

anyone in the audience. We watched Fred Davis play Eddie Charlton.

:31:40.:31:45.

Eddie Charlton was 16 in front with fewer remaining. Fred Davis ended up

:31:46.:31:49.

winning the frame. He didn't make a break over ten. Going red, black,

:31:50.:31:54.

safety, knock a red out. It was unbelievable.

:31:55.:32:00.

An they said it wouldn't catch on. Tactical snookers are an interesting

:32:01.:32:17.

beast. Fergal's frame to get through to the Crucible took more or less

:32:18.:32:18.

two hours. I happened to be watching on

:32:19.:32:21.

Facebook live. Everybody was moaning and saying it

:32:22.:32:38.

was disgraceful snooker, for some reason. By the end of the match,

:32:39.:32:43.

there were 2,000 people instead of the 1,000 that started. Where's the

:32:44.:32:47.

cue ball going? That could be the end.

:32:48.:32:53.

Fergal didn't expect the cue ball to be anywhere near that corner pocket.

:32:54.:32:59.

He will be expecting to shake hands now with Mark Selby.

:33:00.:33:13.

Just talking about deciding frames, we don't like to talk about 1985 in

:33:14.:33:19.

your company, but that was a long frame, wasn't it? I think 70

:33:20.:33:24.

minutes. Obviously 120 minutes is another story.

:33:25.:33:32.

You wouldn't have minded if it had lasted! If you'd have come out on

:33:33.:33:36.

top. Not clear-cut chance obviously to

:33:37.:34:00.

wrap up the frame. Quite a lot of reds in awkward positions to get

:34:01.:34:02.

over the line. You expect the top players to keep

:34:03.:34:11.

the breaks going. He's been cueing so nicely. Didn't

:34:12.:34:44.

do that well. Just wept through it a bit quick. The side pushed the cue

:34:45.:34:47.

ball into the red. It looks like the man from Dublin is

:34:48.:34:59.

playing the double. Oh, he's playing safe.

:35:00.:35:17.

It looks like he can get through to the potting angle.

:35:18.:35:24.

Likewise for Fergal, into the same pocket.

:35:25.:36:17.

He'll get lots of encouragement. A very fair audience here. They'll be

:36:18.:36:24.

wanting to see a match or Fergal win a few more frames.

:36:25.:36:30.

It's hard to think straight when you're this far behind.

:36:31.:36:37.

Especially as you've not really settled down in the arena. He will

:36:38.:36:43.

do well to get anywhere near level terms here.

:36:44.:36:53.

He rolled a nice red in and it was fully appreciated.

:36:54.:37:15.

He's an absolute gent and fierce competitor.

:37:16.:37:23.

He's a marvellous sportsman. It's not beyond him to put a charge

:37:24.:37:27.

on. He made five Severnries in a best of

:37:28.:37:31.

11 match. -- centuries. A fantastic

:37:32.:37:45.

performance that was. Hard to get out of jail here.

:37:46.:38:01.

He's not played that well. Playing for the red in the middle.

:38:02.:38:09.

He will have to settle for the far corner now.

:38:10.:38:28.

That short of pace, it was reasonably easy into the corner. He

:38:29.:38:34.

plays with a really fat tip on his cue.

:38:35.:38:42.

The overhang of the tip is preaching 11 millimetres for a snooker tip.

:38:43.:38:52.

What size was your tip then? Just over nine, I think. I used a ten.

:38:53.:39:18.

I always thought the thinner the end of the cue, the more likelihood to

:39:19.:39:21.

put unintentional side on. He couldn't have struck that any

:39:22.:40:12.

better. Never in doubt the ball going into the pocket. Perfect point

:40:13.:40:16.

of contact on the far cushion. He didn't try to open the two reds

:40:17.:40:28.

up. Thought he had more of an angle than he had.

:40:29.:40:34.

I think those two reds go into the yellow pocket.

:40:35.:40:44.

He can certainly shift them from the brown coming behind both off two

:40:45.:40:48.

cushions. He would expect to get some kind of

:40:49.:41:03.

leave. Not a great outcome. No, he would like to have hit the join of

:41:04.:41:04.

the two reds. If he had caught the join, he would

:41:05.:41:09.

have pushed them both into play. Another terrific, solid pot. Nothing

:41:10.:41:33.

better than the sound of the ball hitting the back of the pocket for a

:41:34.:41:35.

player. No. Well, a bit of drama all of a

:41:36.:42:18.

sudden. Only a little bit. Now does Fergal play the red over the pocket?

:42:19.:42:20.

Or play the red onto the red? The red onto the red is guaranteed

:42:21.:42:35.

to pot. He's not looked at it though, yes, he has.

:42:36.:42:39.

Surely playing the red onto the red over the middle pocket, you're

:42:40.:42:43.

guaranteed to knock it. Perhaps he couldn't get a good

:42:44.:42:53.

position, I don't know. Still hanging on, his hopes, by a

:42:54.:43:03.

thread. Does he risk the red down the rail

:43:04.:43:14.

with an element of safety. It's amazing what goes through a

:43:15.:44:07.

player's mind. There was no value in that shot because of where the pink

:44:08.:44:10.

is. He's left this red. It is cuttable.

:44:11.:44:16.

I want to know why Fergal didn't assess the situation of playing the

:44:17.:44:19.

red onto the red over the middle. It's not cost him. He can get past

:44:20.:44:37.

the blue to hit the red and maybe a chance, he can hit the red down and

:44:38.:44:39.

bring the pink into play. Slow screw back over the distance.

:44:40.:45:05.

Done that well. Kept the cue ball down the table and nudged the pink

:45:06.:45:06.

out. Very nice shot. A bit of a bonus with the snooker as

:45:07.:45:13.

well. Couldn't guarantee that. He's back in the frame and slight

:45:14.:45:27.

favourite. Where that pink's ended up has given

:45:28.:45:30.

Mark Selby a headache. It would appear that the pink is in

:45:31.:45:48.

the way, off the yellow cushion. Looks like the blue is in the way.

:45:49.:45:54.

Perhaps he can load up with loads of side in between the blue and pink.

:45:55.:46:02.

It must be the swerve then. Can he swerve it around the brown? Doesn't

:46:03.:46:07.

want to be pushing the red ball towards the pocket. Pass the

:46:08.:46:09.

aspirins. What about bottom cushion somehow -

:46:10.:46:22.

side cushion? Round the back of the yellow, so to speak, and in between

:46:23.:46:25.

the yellow and blue. Haven't got a clue.

:46:26.:46:27.

Mark hasn't got a clue. We haven't. He looked at that line there. He's

:46:28.:46:35.

got to be careful of course. No, that won't hit it.

:46:36.:46:50.

Foul. He's got to get the other side of the black. So I don't think

:46:51.:46:54.

that's on. If he gets the other side of the black, it goes the other side

:46:55.:46:56.

of the red. All valuable points, these, in

:46:57.:47:17.

ferk's course to try and get back in this.

:47:18.:47:25.

It's going to cost him a few points. Fergal is going to get well back in

:47:26.:47:34.

this. It looks like he's trying to play round the back of the black. I

:47:35.:47:37.

don't think that's on, as you say. It's the other side of the black

:47:38.:47:42.

that's in question, whether he can. His big problem, though, if the

:47:43.:47:46.

yellow wasn't in his way, he could play it plain ball. He's got to play

:47:47.:47:51.

it with side because the yellow is covering the natural angle.

:47:52.:47:55.

I don't think it's on: It's too difficult a swerve. He will give

:47:56.:48:05.

away more points here. He's trying it the other side of the

:48:06.:48:10.

black. He's got relatively close to the black. He's done it! Superb.

:48:11.:48:22.

If you're playing at a club, on club tables with older cushion covers,

:48:23.:48:27.

that shot is not on. Brand new cushions and covers slide

:48:28.:48:41.

a lot. That was a tremendous shot, yeah.

:48:42.:48:47.

Fergal played the white the other side of the yellow.

:48:48.:48:49.

He'll settle for that. It's half a chance. We know how

:48:50.:49:26.

difficult these reds are coming into the middle pocket, narrow angle.

:49:27.:49:39.

Mark put the pink in a slightly more awkward place. Zblrvelingts Let's

:49:40.:49:51.

forget about winning the match at the moment. But winning this frame,

:49:52.:49:52.

he needs the pink. The key to this will be position

:49:53.:50:25.

from brown to blue. I don't think he's come too good on

:50:26.:50:33.

this brown. Good position on the blue could get

:50:34.:50:47.

good position on the pink. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:50:48.:51:38.

Well, what a frame to win. Never say die attitude from Fergal O'Brien,

:51:39.:51:42.

brilliant. OK, it's still a mountain to climb. But well done.

Er A question asked via Twitter about the pink and where it spots in

:53:12.:53:18.

relation to the triangle of reds. The pink is on its spot. It's not

:53:19.:53:23.

touching the triangle of reds. It's the smallest gap.

:53:24.:53:35.

In a strange way it's the only colour that isn't pottable when the

:53:36.:53:38.

balls are set up. Terrific shot. He got the cannon.

:53:39.:54:00.

He's on the black. Lovely shot from Fergal. He should

get the black, even though he's cutting it back.

:54:16.:54:29.

He couldn't guarantee position off this. I think he'll be pleased with

that. Well, unbelievable. I think the look

to the heavens says it all. Just when I thought he was getting up a

head of steam. He misses that.

It's amazing how you can turn a ball over you see the red when the cue
