Hello again. 1977 was the year when the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield

:00:36.:00:45.

first hosted the world snooker championship. If you fast forward

:00:46.:00:49.

eight years from that date to 1984, you would find that by that point

:00:50.:00:54.

Steve Davis was the only player to have won the title in Sheffield

:00:55.:00:58.

twice - he had done so in 1981 and 1983. But at that point, neither he

:00:59.:01:04.

nor anybody else for that matter had ever managed to successfully defend

:01:05.:01:08.

the title at the Crucible to win it back-to-back. And here he was in

:01:09.:01:12.

1984 attempting to do just that. In his way was a cocky Londoner,

:01:13.:01:17.

22-year-old whirlwind Jimmy White, appearing in his first Crucible

:01:18.:01:23.

final. And attempting to add that title to the Masters crown that he

:01:24.:01:26.

had won a few short months ago in London. The 84 final - I was in a

:01:27.:01:34.

different frame of mind, or that world championship I was in a

:01:35.:01:37.

different frame of mind. I had regained my championship the

:01:38.:01:41.

previous year so now I was a multiple winner of the world

:01:42.:01:45.

championship and I started to mature as a player, felt more comfortable

:01:46.:01:48.

at the match table than I had done even in 1981 and I was starting to

:01:49.:01:52.

look like I was the dominant force completely within the game. So I had

:01:53.:01:57.

an air of superiority around me walking into that arena. It was

:01:58.:02:02.

starting to become my office. As expected, Steve began strongly. He

:02:03.:02:06.

had been in devastating form that season, after all - he had won six

:02:07.:02:09.

trophies. He took the first frame and he had a wee bit of a slice of

:02:10.:02:11.

trophies. He took the first frame and he had a wee bit of a slice of

:02:12.:02:11.

luck at the top of the second. Steve takes no notice - they all

:02:12.:02:21.

count. Not only was the fluke very

:02:22.:03:43.

disappointing for Jimmy, but he must be wondering with six or seven loose

:03:44.:03:46.

reds now, whether he will be able to win this frame when Steve has

:03:47.:03:47.

finished here. Appears to have finished a little

:03:48.:06:11.

straight on this black here. Won't have an opportunity, I feel, to

:06:12.:06:15.

break the cluster of reds, but will have to play for one of the two

:06:16.:06:17.

loose ones. He started the first frame with a

:06:18.:06:34.

break of 44. This time, it's 50 so far. That's the hand of our referee,

:06:35.:06:38.

Jim Thorpe. REFEREE: 50 to Steve Davis.

:06:39.:07:10.

APPLAUSE REFEREE: Touching ball.

:07:11.:07:29.

That's a very good shot for Jimmy there, for Steve, opening the brown

:07:30.:07:37.

behind the pink, because the ball is obscuring the two reds. With 55

:07:38.:07:42.

points, he will obviously be very pleased with that shot.

:07:43.:08:32.

And some more damage there. It was a very difficult shot that Jimmy had,

:08:33.:08:38.

there, tucked underneath that side cushion. He was forced, really, to

:08:39.:08:42.

have a go at it. But I'm afraid he has done a lot of damage.

:08:43.:09:02.

This black will mean that Jimmy White will need a snooker.

:09:03.:10:03.

Well, I feel that Steve didn't play to kiss the black then, he played to

:10:04.:10:10.

go around the back of the black, and got rather a nice kiss to keep the

:10:11.:10:12.

frame going. APPLAUSE

:10:13.:11:09.

APPLAUSE 26-year-old Steve Davis forged two

:11:10.:11:19.

frames in front. The younger man, Jimmy, didn't really seem to have

:11:20.:11:21.

settled down by this point. He had a chance, though, in frame three.

:11:22.:11:27.

Well, the first red from Jimmy there was quite an amazing shot. Steve had

:11:28.:11:51.

been a little fortunate, even though he played a foul shot, not to leave

:11:52.:11:56.

Jimmy with a better opportunity. But now he seems to have the balls split

:11:57.:11:58.

very nicely. Now, all the spots are occupied, so

:11:59.:12:48.

the green will have to go just near to that cue ball. As near to its own

:12:49.:12:57.

spot as possible. In fact, I think it is on its spot.

:12:58.:13:15.

He didn't play too good a shot on the green but he will be pleased he

:13:16.:13:20.

has been able to hit the cue ball where he wanted. And now he has got

:13:21.:13:26.

back into prime position. Jimmy white -- White, I feel, still

:13:27.:15:04.

not completely settled down. It was a 47 break there, but it should have

:15:05.:15:05.

been more. Well, the main saving grace for

:15:06.:16:01.

Jimmy here will be the red on the left hand side cushion. Steve will

:16:02.:16:07.

have to manipulate the white ball into such a way as to be able to

:16:08.:16:11.

remove that on the some time to win this frame in one visit.

:16:12.:17:52.

Steve has a choice here - he could, if he wished, play to move the red

:17:53.:18:07.

out now. Well, he didn't get the white quite where he played but he

:18:08.:18:10.

certainly got the red out. If he decides to play the black, it's

:18:11.:18:12.

going to be a very, very difficult shot.

:18:13.:18:26.

REFEREE: 37 to Steve Davis. APPLAUSE

:18:27.:18:34.

14 points in it, then, and 43 points left on the table.

:18:35.:18:53.

That was a lovely shot from Jimmy, knowing that if he missed the black

:18:54.:19:21.

he could have lost the frame, he played the shot perfect strength.

:19:22.:19:35.

And the blue means that Steve requires a snooker this time. But

:19:36.:19:45.

Jimmy has snookered himself. 28 points in it, 27 points on the

:19:46.:19:46.

table. Now, Jimmy mustn't miss this. Steve

:19:47.:20:55.

has put the green very near that top pocket.

:20:56.:21:24.

Jimmy purposely played the white ball hard there, just in case he did

:21:25.:21:29.

miss it, but he still left Steve an easy opportunity on the green, I

:21:30.:21:35.

feel. Just wants the five balls now to win the frame.

:21:36.:22:20.

Jimmy appears to be throwing caution to the winds at the moment.

:22:21.:23:12.

It's so pleasing to pinch a frame, but demoralising if you're the

:23:13.:23:16.

opponent. Jimmy White, then, paying for his

:23:17.:23:57.

mistakes and Steve Davis makes it three in a row. Playing Jimmy in the

:23:58.:24:03.

final, even though Jimmy was a younger player, which is always

:24:04.:24:06.

harder to play against, he was still a player that I had not really

:24:07.:24:09.

struggled against in the past, so everybody expected me to overcome a

:24:10.:24:19.

player who was more of a throw caution to the wind, cavalier style,

:24:20.:24:22.

that I would pick him off and do a clinical job on him. The difference

:24:23.:24:30.

now 18 points. Yes, and the worst thing about that shot, Ted, is he's

:24:31.:24:34.

brought the blue out into play. Steve was needing every ball and now

:24:35.:24:37.

this makes it a little bit more easy for him, should he get the

:24:38.:24:39.

opportunity. Could be the chance that Jimmy has

:24:40.:26:28.

been looking for. He's 18 points in front.

:26:29.:26:36.

Hasn't got that beautiful flowing cue action right yet. If there's any

:26:37.:27:00.

consolation at all, I feel it's that the green looks relatively straight.

:27:01.:27:03.

Steve would need to really get into this cue ball to get on the brown.

:27:04.:27:11.

Seems to have acquired the perfect angle to play round the table and

:27:12.:27:16.

finish on to the blue. Would probably be playing the white around

:27:17.:27:17.

three cushions. Hasn't got it quite right. Well,

:27:18.:27:42.

these are the shots, Ted, that either win frames or lose them,

:27:43.:27:47.

should he care to take it on. He's not even attempted the pot -

:27:48.:27:50.

probably a very wise decision in that moment.

:27:51.:28:06.

A terrific roar, then, for Jimmy White as he takes our fourth frame

:28:07.:28:38.

and the two players leave the arena for the interval. Steve Davis

:28:39.:28:42.

leading three frames to one. The rest of the session was quite

:28:43.:28:49.

simply one-way traffic for Davis. 7-1 ahead - that is quite a

:28:50.:28:53.

demoralising margin. Jimmy was trying hard to summon any kind of

:28:54.:28:57.

resistance as we headed now into frame nine.

:28:58.:29:07.

He doesn't like being away from the table for so long. He was quite

:29:08.:29:14.

eager to take that opportunity. It didn't appear as though the ball

:29:15.:29:17.

kicked at all, but it was certainly some distance away from the pot.

:29:18.:29:47.

Davis attempting there to move one of the reds from the side cushion.

:29:48.:33:10.

Steve Davis plays seven frames ahead. He leads by eight frames to

:33:11.:33:13.

one. That was a good shot from Jimmy

:33:14.:35:43.

immediately, potting the black ball off the top cushion and bringing it

:35:44.:35:45.

back into play. Well, he has brought the pink ball

:35:46.:37:49.

free now, disturbed the red that was nestling on it, but this is not an

:37:50.:37:59.

easy pot to the centre. Well, this is more like the Jimmy White we

:38:00.:38:01.

hoped to see in this final. He's very disappointed with that one

:38:02.:38:18.

- with the red over the pocket. It was the ideal opportunity to break

:38:19.:38:24.

into the pack, with the insurance of the red which was already there.

:38:25.:38:30.

Still going, but not a perfect position.

:38:31.:38:48.

Well, there's tremendous cue power there from Jimmy White, the white

:38:49.:38:53.

ball flying around the angles, but not quite in the right direction to

:38:54.:38:56.

get a break on the remaining cluster of reds.

:38:57.:39:16.

So, what's more likely - all mutuals in the snooker world will be glad to

:39:17.:39:20.

see that 61 break by Jimmy White. Well, he's a long way behind in this

:39:21.:41:28.

match, is Jimmy White, at this present stage, but when he starts

:41:29.:41:31.

playing in this kind of form, it makes you think that he could

:41:32.:41:38.

perhaps reel four or five frames off on the trot and be right back in the

:41:39.:41:40.

match. Nine and a half minutes of genius -

:41:41.:42:50.

breaks of 61 and 76 give Jimmy White the tenth frame, but Steve Davis

:42:51.:42:55.

still leads by eight frames to two. That frame was a rare highlight in

:42:56.:42:58.

those early moments for Jimmy White, who had had problems with his cue

:42:59.:43:05.

tip throughout. He finished 12-4 behind and quite frankly things

:43:06.:43:09.

really didn't look that good for him. The late Jim Medecroft, who was

:43:10.:43:19.

a currentater, I said to him, my tip is really hard and I felt my tip and

:43:20.:43:24.

he said it's like a rock so I took my tip off played for about an hour,

:43:25.:43:29.

but for me, that first final, was all about having a new tip. After

:43:30.:43:34.

the first day's play I think I was 12/4 up and that was an understand

:43:35.:43:38.

commaing lead, but then I suffered, as I had done on a couple of

:43:39.:43:44.

occasions, not many but a couple, the loneliness of the long distance

:43:45.:43:48.

runner - I looked over my shoulder. And that night's sleep, even though

:43:49.:43:52.

it should have been a wonderful night's sleep, I started to worry

:43:53.:43:54.

that he would come back at me. Well, that's an event. A completely

:43:55.:44:10.

misjudged safety stroke from the champion and at his previous visit

:44:11.:44:14.

to the table, he attempted a pot, which would only just go, but he

:44:15.:44:16.

missed that as well. Even though Jimmy has played a good

:44:17.:44:52.

shot with the rest there, even with the red up on to the black, it's

:44:53.:44:58.

difficult to get into the black unless he plays the kiss into the

:44:59.:45:01.

red. Decided to play the half ball short and play into the black.

:45:02.:46:30.

A frame-winning opportunity now for White. And with the reds wide open,

:46:31.:46:40.

he must take it, otherwise he would be very vulnerable to a

:46:41.:46:41.

counter-punch. Well, Jimmy has spent a long time in

:46:42.:48:05.

the practice room this morning, had a new tip on yesterday, and seems to

:48:06.:48:09.

have got the weight a little bit better today. Last night, he was

:48:10.:48:12.

sadly out of touch with the new tip. But this will do his confidence no

:48:13.:48:14.

harm at all. Well, Jimmy will be slightly pleased

:48:15.:49:19.

to know that, if he pots this black, Steve Davis will require snookers.

:49:20.:49:23.

There is a chance of seeing a very big break here.

:49:24.:51:25.

Well, White has really showed his character with this break.

:51:26.:51:31.

APPLAUSE Well, he was eight frames down

:51:32.:52:02.

overnight, but no hint of giving in. A really marvellous clearance of 119

:52:03.:52:06.

by Jimmy White and just the start he wanted to this afternoon's session.

:52:07.:52:13.

Still well behind, though - Steve Davis leads by 12 frames to 56789 --

:52:14.:52:14.

5. Steve Davis at the table, making his

:52:15.:53:50.

counter-punch to the break of 37 which took Jimmy White into the

:53:51.:53:52.

lead. Well, this shot's certainly not as

:53:53.:54:47.

easy as Steve would have liked. It's a very straight red with the rest,

:54:48.:54:51.

but probably trying to screw back for a choice of the pink or blue, or

:54:52.:54:55.

alternative running around the two cushions for the pink into the

:54:56.:54:56.

middle pocket. He certainly doesn't fancy either

:54:57.:55:04.

shot at the moment. Well, there wasn't much angle there

:55:05.:55:32.

and Davis was trying to manufacture one. The screw shot was much more

:55:33.:55:36.

difficult with the rest than it would have been with the hand

:55:37.:55:41.

bridge, so he tried to power the cue ball around off two cushions for the

:55:42.:55:42.

pink. Well, it's a frim-winning shot if he

:55:43.:56:09.

attempts the brown - but it could be a frame-winning shot if he misses

:56:10.:56:14.

it. That was a truly excellent pot under pressure.

:56:15.:56:39.

Which means that Davis needs a snooker.

:56:40.:57:17.

So, that should certainly assure Jimmy White of the second frame of

:57:18.:57:23.

the afternoon. And it did - Jimmy, finally, on a roll, or a mini-roll

:57:24.:57:28.

at least and his confidence was surging, more on the point when he

:57:29.:57:31.

took the next as well. Three frames on the spin to trail 7/12. And he

:57:32.:57:36.

had Davis in trouble in frame 20, as well.

:57:37.:58:05.

Well, even though Jimmy has left a pot here, it does help with him

:58:06.:58:13.

being left-handed. I'm sure it will help with his playing to get on to

:58:14.:58:19.

the blue. Yes, I'm sure Steve will be very pleased to see that. Yes, I

:58:20.:58:28.

think White can count himself a little unlucky that he wasn't left a

:58:29.:58:33.

slightly easier red than that. Davis went full-blooded attempting to

:58:34.:58:36.

escape from the snooker, but didn't leave anything easy. Now, from this

:58:37.:59:23.

kind of position I would ordinarily expect Davis to clear up, but

:59:24.:59:31.

there's extra pressure on him to do so now.

:59:32.:00:37.

And is this where White's revival is halted?

:00:38.:00:52.

Steve still requiring the fluke to come back and make the save.

:00:53.:01:31.

A crucial clearance for Davis. He stops his run of three losing frames

:01:32.:01:40.

and leads Jimmy White by 13 frames to 7. Yes, Jimmy really playing with

:01:41.:01:47.

renewed vigour now - he took the next four frames in a row to reduce

:01:48.:01:52.

his arrears to only two, 11/13 behind. But back came Davis, like

:01:53.:01:57.

the true champion he was. Taking three of the next four to lead

:01:58.:02:08.

16/12. It's crampons on again for Jimmy as we rejoin them in frame 29.

:02:09.:02:15.

REFEREE: Foul stroke, four to Jimmy White. Well, he is a little

:02:16.:02:19.

fortunate that he didn't come another foot down the table, or else

:02:20.:02:22.

he would have left a really nice leave.

:02:23.:02:55.

And suddenly two shots and he's opened the frame right up here with

:02:56.:02:59.

quite a good chance. Well, this is difficult, the pink,

:03:00.:03:50.

having to cue over the top of the other balls, making it a very

:03:51.:03:56.

difficult shot. But having so much of the cue over the hand makes it so

:03:57.:03:59.

much more difficult. But it's a good shot.

:04:00.:04:23.

And quite happy to go down for the small fry to try and establish a

:04:24.:04:30.

better position. Tried hard to squeeze that round to

:04:31.:05:44.

get - keep on the pink into the corner. Would have liked to have

:05:45.:05:46.

been a little straighter on this. Well, Jimmy needs one more red after

:05:47.:06:13.

this colour. So just making absolutely sure, now,

:06:14.:06:32.

of the red to leave Steve needing a snooker.

:06:33.:07:03.

So this red should really put it beyond doubt and here we are, again,

:07:04.:07:22.

going to be in a situation of just two frames' difference and he's

:07:23.:07:23.

stirring the fire again. APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

:07:24.:07:32.

And what a delightful shot. Well, he shouldn't have missed it,

:07:33.:08:41.

but not too important. And Steve nods his head and says, "That's

:08:42.:08:44.

enough". That's two frames behind. Steve Davis withstood the onslaught

:08:45.:09:59.

of young Jimmy White this afternoon. REFEREE: 21 to Steve Davis. Well,

:10:00.:10:21.

I'm not sure of the pressure Steve is under at the moment - it's not

:10:22.:10:26.

the kind of shot that we normally expect Steve to miss.

:10:27.:10:40.

Now, that's split the reds over the table - one mistake now... .. He

:10:41.:12:52.

hopes that Steve makes it. Just three frames in it.

:12:53.:13:15.

And that's a bad one from Steve. He's 22 points in front.

:13:16.:14:39.

Carefully played for the plant, I believe. No, red into the centre

:14:40.:14:43.

pocket. The break reaches the half century

:14:44.:15:25.

and he's 28 points in front. Steve wanting a snooker, even before

:15:26.:17:38.

the pink. A terrific performance, then, by

:17:39.:18:41.

young Jimmy White - again, he pulls back a frame and with a break of 72.

:18:42.:18:47.

He's now just two frames behind at 14/16. I effectively came out for

:18:48.:18:51.

the second day's play and asked for Jimmy to come back at me. I didn't

:18:52.:18:55.

play as positively as I should have done. If you could just play as if

:18:56.:18:59.

it was the start of the match, it would be better. And Jimmy did come

:19:00.:19:04.

back - great player. And it got back to relatively level.

:19:05.:21:16.

Jimmy having to work very hard for this break, with the pink and black

:21:17.:21:20.

both being tied up. That's a tremendous shot from Jimmy,

:21:21.:23:12.

a lot of pole right hand side in that shot. And he's got a good

:23:13.:23:15.

chance of clinching this frame here. So just the black and one more red

:23:16.:23:49.

to leave Steve needing snookers. 53 points in front - 59 points on

:23:50.:24:16.

the table. And with that break of 53,

:24:17.:24:34.

incredibly Jimmy moved to one only one frame of Steve Davis's lead,

:24:35.:24:41.

15/16. Remember, he had been 12/4 down overnight - a remarkable

:24:42.:24:45.

performance and the tension levels were creeping ever upwards inside

:24:46.:24:49.

the Crucible, as we rejoin them. And this is a crucial shot Jimmy's

:24:50.:24:54.

taking on here, trying to deep screw back on the baulk end of the table -

:24:55.:25:01.

and a tremendous pot. Certain to leave Steve on, had he missed it.

:25:02.:26:24.

Has Jimmy got the angle now to come on to the pink between these two

:26:25.:26:35.

reds and the black? That puts him two points in front. Wants this

:26:36.:26:43.

frame to make the match all square. Well, he's certainly perfect on the

:26:44.:27:11.

pink to ball behind the red oft left-hand cushion and, being a

:27:12.:27:15.

left-hander, this will suit him. And he won't be too happy with that.

:27:16.:27:18.

Wanted to come away from the cushion a little bit.

:27:19.:27:57.

This is proving to be a very, very hard day for Steve Davis. And

:27:58.:28:14.

there's Jimmy just looking to see what angle he wants to leave on the

:28:15.:28:16.

black to come up for other red. Steve showing the pressure he's

:28:17.:29:18.

under there - hit that much too thick.

:29:19.:29:50.

?200,000 is the prize money in this year's Embassy Snooker World

:29:51.:31:06.

Championship. And it's resting on this final.

:31:07.:31:32.

Steve Davis, then, with just the black to come.

:31:33.:32:00.

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING Takes the frames to 17/15 and Steve

:32:01.:32:15.

Davis requires one frame to retain his world title.

:32:16.:32:44.

That could be a crucial red that Steve has just potted. It gives him

:32:45.:32:53.

a chance to get a few points on the board and, of course, wanting one

:32:54.:32:58.

frame, that's going to put more pressure still on Jimmy.

:32:59.:35:42.

Well, he'll probably hole this red for the pink - won't be taking any

:35:43.:35:44.

chances. With almost Monday not news magic,

:35:45.:36:56.

-- monotonous magic, Steve Davis works towards his goal.

:36:57.:37:18.

Well, I think there's a plant on, just below the pink there. So any

:37:19.:37:46.

colour and one more red to leave Jimmy needing snookers.

:37:47.:38:05.

APPLAUSE Terrific round of applause, then,

:38:06.:38:16.

for Steve. A great effort. Enough balls on the table for Jimmy to take

:38:17.:38:17.

the frame. That's another good shot from Jimmy,

:38:18.:39:11.

moving the red out. Would like it to have gone another inch or two.

:39:12.:39:39.

Well, what a brave shot to play at that speed. Knew he would leave it

:39:40.:40:08.

over the pocket if he missed it. And still needs all the colours to win.

:40:09.:40:27.

Wondering what he has to do to get the one frame. And that's gone just

:40:28.:41:06.

where Jimmy didn't want it. Tight against the cushion - now he's going

:41:07.:41:10.

to have a job to get the white away from the cushion for the pink.

:41:11.:41:29.

A fantastic performance - wait for the applause.

:41:30.:41:31.

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING 17/16, and Steve Davis was one away

:41:32.:41:49.

from becoming the first man ever to successfully defend the world title

:41:50.:41:53.

at the Crucible. But millions upon millions of people were willing

:41:54.:41:56.

Jimmy White to take this one right down to the wire and into a decider.

:41:57.:42:11.

And once again, Steve catches the blue on the break-off.

:42:12.:44:52.

After this black, Jimmy can clear this red from the right-hand corner

:44:53.:46:03.

pocket and make the black pottable in both pockets. And I think we will

:46:04.:46:14.

see Jimmy go into the pack of reds, knowing he will be left on this red

:46:15.:46:16.

into the right-hand corner pocket. And that shot there just shows

:46:17.:48:32.

Jimmy's confidence. Had a nice, easy pink but was the wrong side of it

:48:33.:48:35.

and took a far more difficult brown to come down for this red. And no

:48:36.:48:41.

doubt, I would think now, will try to go into this pack of four.

:48:42.:49:34.

Eight points in it - four reds to go - and Steve right underneath the

:49:35.:49:38.

baulk cushion. Another tremendous shot - this time

:49:39.:50:20.

from Steve - under immense pressure. Has the problem of the red on the

:50:21.:50:48.

cushion there. He will screw back here for the pink

:50:49.:51:37.

but the yellow's only pottable in the green pocket.

:51:38.:52:08.

Steve's 17 in front, but all the colours in the centre of the table,

:52:09.:52:47.

so whoever gets this yellow could win.

:52:48.:53:18.

Well, Jimmy had a go - and I think he may pay the penalty.

:53:19.:53:27.

Great shot. Still needs the green to put himself 22 in front, with 22 on

:53:28.:53:38.

the table, and this isn't easy, at this stage of the match.

:53:39.:54:04.

19 points in it - 25 points on the table.

:54:05.:55:38.

Jimmy White walks quietly back to his chair.

:55:39.:56:16.

He was a long, long away from that one. Yes, he got rather impatient

:56:17.:56:29.

there. And this is probably the best chance Steve's going to have - not

:56:30.:56:32.

an easy green, but, should he get it, must finish on the brown.

:56:33.:56:54.

Jimmy sees the championship now drifting away from him.

:56:55.:57:12.

That great champion - he is achieving what nobody else has done

:57:13.:57:35.

before. APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

:57:36.:57:49.

A great performance, then, by Steve Davis, defending his title and

:57:50.:57:52.

winning it for a second time here at the Crucible Theatre, to win the

:57:53.:57:59.

Embassy World Snooker Championship 1984. I basically just about fell

:58:00.:58:06.

over the line - it was a big shock to the system and I was very

:58:07.:58:11.

relieved to have won the 84 final. I was so confident that I'd win it

:58:12.:58:16.

next year or the year after or the year after - and where are we now?

:58:17.:58:21.

2016! I was so confident, I was OK, I was OK losing. If I didn't change

:58:22.:58:25.

my tip, I think I would have won it. So it was a case of what might have

:58:26.:58:27.

been for So it was a case of what might have

:58:28.:58:27.

been for Jimmy So it was a case of what might have

:58:28.:58:31.

been for Jimmy in the 1984 final. His first Crucible final and the

:58:32.:58:33.

first of many disappointments on that big occasion. As for Steve

:58:34.:58:37.

Davis - well, that win represented a third world title and he would go on

:58:38.:58:41.

to win it a further three more times. In fact, such was his

:58:42.:58:47.

superiority in the 1980s that he appeared in no fewer than 8 of the

:58:48.:58:54.

10 Crucible finals in the 80s - or the Davis era as it has now come to

:58:55.:58:56.

be known.
