Hello again. The 1986 Crucible final had a lot to live up to. 12 months

:00:09.:00:48.

earlier, 18 and a half million people were glued to their TV sets,

:00:49.:00:54.

watching the drama served up by Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor. 1

:00:55.:00:59.

year on, Steve Davis was back, in another final, and if he was widely

:01:00.:01:05.

expected to beat Dennis Taylor and famously didn't, he was expected to

:01:06.:01:14.

crush Bradford's Joe Johnson. They was the 150' to-1 outer. The whole

:01:15.:01:23.

of Yorkshire was entranced by his progress and so was very neutral in

:01:24.:01:29.

the country. Everyone was dream a fairy tale sporting finale. I

:01:30.:01:33.

remember thinking, should I touch this trophy now? Because

:01:34.:01:34.

remember thinking, should I touch this trophy now? Because I may not

:01:35.:01:38.

get another chance. Obviously, he was going to win. I will just have a

:01:39.:01:43.

little touch. I approached the final against Steve Davis, thinking to

:01:44.:01:48.

myself, what a great player he is. He lost in the final of the year

:01:49.:01:53.

previously, with the famous black ball, and I thought, he is going to

:01:54.:01:58.

set his stall out to beat me. And I tried to put him out of my mind

:01:59.:02:03.

completely. I was playing the balls rather than Steve Davis. If you

:02:04.:02:08.

start thinking you're playing the best player ever which he was at

:02:09.:02:13.

that time, you're halfway beaten before you start. Coming into the 86

:02:14.:02:19.

world championship, I had weathered the tomorrow, won events during the

:02:20.:02:27.

season, got my Lib equilibrium back, and was relishing the chance of

:02:28.:02:35.

regaining my title. I got into the final, against another huge

:02:36.:02:37.

underdog, Joe Johnson decided to play the match and tournament of his

:02:38.:02:42.

life. Just shy of his 29th birthday, Steve Davis took the opening frame

:02:43.:02:45.

and in the second, he is 14 points adrift.

:02:46.:03:05.

Well, that kiss as it turns out, couldn't have been better.

:03:06.:03:52.

Well, it is does seem the only plb here can be the blue -- the only

:03:53.:04:00.

problem here can be the blue. He looks to epretty straight on the

:04:01.:04:01.

brown. That brings Steve level on the

:04:02.:04:25.

scores. So this obviously the key shot. Just requiring now blue and

:04:26.:04:26.

pink. So, a sigh of relief by Joe and he's

:04:27.:04:44.

got a chance here. APPLAUSE

:04:45.:05:16.

So, this frame taken twice as long as the first one. So Joe is putting

:05:17.:05:18.

up the night. Well done, Joe!

:05:19.:05:23.

APPLAUSE Slight slit more difficult, having

:05:24.:07:13.

to use the cue extension, and because of that reason, he is not

:07:14.:07:14.

ideally placed on the black. Pot is quite easy, but he'll need to

:07:15.:07:28.

develop one or two reds in order to keep the break going. Or go for the

:07:29.:07:30.

single red in baulk. He is looking very closely at the

:07:31.:07:59.

possibility of a 3-ball plant, just directly behind the pink. 4-ball,

:08:00.:08:01.

possibly. Nicely controlled as well. He is

:08:02.:08:05.

sitting on the pink here. 43. He has accumulated 43 points so

:08:06.:11:57.

far, and the break hasn't been easy because of the situation of the

:11:58.:12:02.

balls, the next couple of shots, we should see it develop.

:12:03.:12:27.

And that's a nice little kiss on the blue.

:12:28.:12:37.

And Steve certainly sill looking fresh after that tremendous match

:12:38.:12:45.

he's had. I wonder if perhaps little later, Willie Thorne may be able to

:12:46.:12:51.

enlarge on that, whether he should be tired after such a tough match.

:12:52.:13:04.

Well, useful kiss to leave him on the brown, still got to break into

:13:05.:13:36.

the reds to maintain the break. Ask he couldn't have played it any

:13:37.:13:40.

better. 67. Steve now safe. And quite a nice

:13:41.:14:28.

possibility of a nice sized break here.

:14:29.:14:39.

Naict. I it will interesting to see how he handles the glean. The rest

:14:40.:16:06.

of the colours on their spots. More or less.

:16:07.:16:12.

APPLAUSE And there he tried to give it's a

:16:13.:16:16.

little pick. APPLAUSE

:16:17.:16:48.

Oh, what a beauty! And that must make him feel pleased. But he's got

:16:49.:16:52.

to get another one. APPLAUSE

:16:53.:17:11.

So, even applause from Joe there for a lovely 100 break.

:17:12.:17:17.

Well, he can obviously see a problem there, I would suggest it's the fact

:17:18.:17:24.

he is not straight on the plaque makes it very difficult when it's so

:17:25.:17:26.

tight. Well, Steve has intentionally potted

:17:27.:19:06.

that red, because it clears the black into the right-hand corner

:19:07.:19:15.

pocket. But finishing as straight as he has on the black...

:19:16.:19:35.

I was about to say he was limited in the shot he could play. But possibly

:19:36.:19:40.

now has the same problem. 16.

:19:41.:19:50.

APPLAUSE Well, he's certainly on the pink,

:19:51.:21:16.

but he cut that one a little bit fine.

:21:17.:21:33.

36. Not quite as he intended. He was looking for a thicker contact on the

:21:34.:22:22.

red, no too far away from the cue ball, now a different choice of red.

:22:23.:22:31.

And this really is a beautiful break that Steve is making. He is using

:22:32.:22:40.

very few cannons and pinpointing the cue ball.

:22:41.:23:42.

Back in position. Now requiring the black or one of the 3 remaining reds

:23:43.:23:47.

to secure the frame. Skaix 6667. Again, a very clean

:23:48.:24:56.

tiedsy break. Colours virtually on their spots again. This could be a

:24:57.:24:58.

formality. And this really is a classic break

:24:59.:25:17.

from Steve Davis. He's playing so well now, that he's put in the

:25:18.:25:21.

absolute minimum of effort into the stroke, but getting the maximum from

:25:22.:25:22.

it. 89. 94.

:25:23.:26:02.

APPLAUSE So there's the hundred. And a lovely

:26:03.:26:13.

break. So Steve Davis leads by 3 frames to one at the interval. Steve

:26:14.:26:18.

Davis had this habit of really punishing people. I remember the

:26:19.:26:26.

year before, he was 8-nil up. And he had beaten Mike Hallett 9-0 in one

:26:27.:26:31.

of the big tournaments as well. I thought to myself, every time you

:26:32.:26:36.

get a chance, try and make sure you win the frame, you know? Don't give

:26:37.:26:41.

up frames, if you like. Don't take them too lightly. Stay with him.

:26:42.:27:19.

One of the problems for Joe, he is not certain where the pink is going

:27:20.:27:26.

to go after he is potted it. Whether the red in the open there would be

:27:27.:27:29.

covered by by the pink. Well, just a couple more reds to

:27:30.:28:36.

make this frame safe. And a good performance considering what

:28:37.:28:37.

happened in the last two frames. So that red means that Davis needs a

:28:38.:29:11.

snooker. And because he couldn't get his body

:29:12.:29:35.

right down to play his last shot, Johnson didn't get his positional

:29:36.:29:37.

play as accurate as he might have done.

:29:38.:29:38.

APPLAUSE Nevertheless, all is well and he can

:29:39.:30:02.

congratulate himself on coming back so strongly after the mid-session

:30:03.:30:06.

interval, ing a having 2 century breaks put on him in the two

:30:07.:30:07.

previous frames. APPLAUSE

:30:08.:30:21.

Davis concedes. And Johnson narrows the gap to one frame.

:30:22.:30:51.

, he can obviously get through to this red, and now a good chance for

:30:52.:30:54.

Joe. Just having a look after potting the

:30:55.:31:14.

pink into had red centre, whether he can stay on that red.

:31:15.:31:26.

Now gone six points in front, and the only difficult ball it appears

:31:27.:31:32.

to me could possibly be the green. Now this is the important shot - 12

:31:33.:32:06.

points in front. Once have you a green and grown, and Joe having a

:32:07.:32:10.

look at where he's got to screw back off the yellow. If the green was on

:32:11.:32:13.

the spot, it would be quite simple. So, Davis scored four, but he only

:32:14.:33:40.

added one more red as Johnson played some very tight, competitive match

:33:41.:33:43.

snooker to win the frame and level the match at 3-all. 12 months

:33:44.:33:50.

earlier, Davis had famously gone 8-0 in front against Dennis Taylor ask

:33:51.:33:55.

still lost. But this time, Joe Johnson was determined to stick with

:33:56.:33:59.

him a lot more closely in the early stages. But suddenly after breaks,

:34:00.:34:07.

he found it was clear blue water in front of them. But even then, the

:34:08.:34:13.

Nugget was not taking anything for granted. The only shot I remember of

:34:14.:34:20.

the final was Joe potting a ball down the rail, all the way down into

:34:21.:34:25.

the green pocket, and taking on shots with breathtaking ease. He

:34:26.:34:29.

didn't have a care in the world - such a great cueist. Great shot.

:34:30.:35:16.

Ties time, Joe -- this time, Joe is taking the half bass. Earlier, he

:35:17.:35:25.

used his own telescopic cue, not terribly successful with.

:35:26.:36:37.

Joe keeps looking at that red at the back of the pack.

:36:38.:36:46.

And he looks to have the perfect position on it.

:36:47.:36:54.

They have broken beautifully for him! Every chance now of pulling his

:36:55.:37:27.

frame out of the bag. Now looks to stun off the red into

:37:28.:38:24.

the pink for the right-hand coverage pocket. Corner pocket.

:38:25.:38:40.

Is a terrific player and great temper. For a match player. Probably

:38:41.:38:51.

his greatest attribute coming into the world championship, his cool,

:38:52.:38:54.

calm and collected manner at the table.

:38:55.:39:04.

So already 32 points in point. If he could get 2 pinks, that could be

:39:05.:39:12.

sufficient to leave Steve needing snookers.

:39:13.:39:28.

He may have to get down for the blue off this red.

:39:29.:39:43.

66. APPLAUSE

:39:44.:40:34.

72, Johnson has a break. Well, Joe Johnson has mate 3 centuries in the

:40:35.:40:55.

championship, but that's the highest break in the final, a break of 72.

:40:56.:41:01.

He now trails by just 2 frames. The support of the people absolutely

:41:02.:41:04.

certainly helped my, without a doubt. They were fantastic. Every

:41:05.:41:11.

time I got a good shot, I could hear the thunder russ applause. Fantastic

:41:12.:41:13.

to have that kind of support. Take it quite naturally. Difficult

:41:14.:41:21.

red, along the top. Yes, a lot more difficult shot than

:41:22.:42:25.

it looked. Knew he would be leaving Steve if he missed it. But now given

:42:26.:42:31.

himself an excellent chance in this frame. Already 20 points in front.

:42:32.:43:14.

He was 3 times Yorkshire amateur champion and turned professional in

:43:15.:43:24.

1979. It has taken him 7 years to get to this stage, the stage of the

:43:25.:43:25.

world championship final. APPLAUSE

:43:26.:43:51.

And this is the last of the easy reds. And of course, it's not enough

:43:52.:43:58.

for Joe to win the frame. So he's looking now, I think, to go down

:43:59.:44:04.

near in baulk cushion off this red, so he has an angle when potting the

:44:05.:44:10.

green to come down and split the 3 reds.

:44:11.:44:23.

So now, 39 points in front. Just need the red and one more colour to

:44:24.:44:41.

leave Steve needing snookers again. And Joe, just checking the board.

:44:42.:45:19.

And just note the position a little bit there. Just checking he is 40 in

:45:20.:45:29.

front, he needs at least the green. I think we may see him play a

:45:30.:45:30.

snooker here. APPLAUSE

:45:31.:46:30.

. John, had a brave shot that was! Yes, that's a great shot. Puts him

:46:31.:46:37.

43 in front now. Knew he was leaving the red and he missed

:46:38.:46:53.

32, Joe Johnson. That knock of 32 was enough to bring Johnson within

:46:54.:47:03.

one frame of his decorated opponent. He has a slight advantage in the

:47:04.:47:06.

next But Steve is eyeing up a red here.

:47:07.:47:21.

In next red could win him this frame.

:47:22.:48:09.

7, Steve Davis. This is hard to believe... He missed the same shot

:48:10.:48:18.

now into that pocket, identical, I would say, 3 times.

:48:19.:48:21.

So now got to be an excellent opportunity for Joe. Unfortunately

:48:22.:48:37.

for Joe, I think the green is covering the brown spot. So should

:48:38.:48:41.

he pot the brown, of course, he would come back down to the black

:48:42.:48:45.

spot, so Joe electing the take the green instead.

:48:46.:48:51.

And he's over his problems. Just a little bit care now. And the match

:48:52.:49:10.

is all square. The brown and blue now to put this

:49:11.:49:27.

frame safe. APPLAUSE

:49:28.:49:44.

And Steve must be wondering how he lost this frame with the chances

:49:45.:49:45.

he's had. Well, this frame has been going to

:49:46.:50:10.

and fro throughout. Finally, Johnson takes it. And makes

:50:11.:50:32.

the match all square at 7 frames each.

:50:33.:50:36.

And Joe Johnson is away straightaway.

:50:37.:50:57.

Yes, the sight of reds that Joe's been knocking in all week. Again, a

:50:58.:51:03.

crucial shot. This red will be going into the pack.

:51:04.:51:05.

APPLAUSE 16. So now, a choice, could run down

:51:06.:52:14.

for the red into the right-hand centre pocket, or may elect to

:52:15.:52:17.

disturb these reds again, just above the black.

:52:18.:52:35.

Probably screw back for the blue here, to get away from the side

:52:36.:52:38.

cushion. Playing with complete ease. And of

:52:39.:53:30.

course, the way the reds are set, each time he pots one, it opens up

:53:31.:53:36.

the path for the another one into the opposite corner pocket.

:53:37.:53:46.

I would like to have come a little lower on the black there, to get the

:53:47.:54:17.

reds into this right-hand corner pocket.

:54:18.:54:43.

The capacity crowd appreciating every move he makes.

:54:44.:55:21.

So just one red and one more colour to leave Steve needing snookers.

:55:22.:55:58.

Could just scu the black, leave the pink in the centre off this red.

:55:59.:56:08.

Joe, just looking at the baurd - and I'm sure if it was me playing his

:56:09.:56:25.

shot, I would be screwing off the pink so I didn't play a position for

:56:26.:56:26.

the red. APPLAUSE

:56:27.:56:38.

He seems to be playing the same game as you, John. D.

:56:39.:56:46.

APPLAUSE He made a 72 in the 12th frame, his

:56:47.:57:02.

highest in the final. He has now equalled it. And about to go a

:57:03.:57:05.

little better. 77.

:57:06.:57:23.

APPLAUSE Some brilliant potting by Joe

:57:24.:57:35.

Johnson, a break of 75 and only 59 points left on the table.

:57:36.:57:44.

Said before, these are the ones that he has been knocking in all week.

:57:45.:58:07.

It was a long way off with that one. A bit wild, John.

:58:08.:59:12.

Now, 70 points in front, just wants the one red to clinch this frame.

:59:13.:00:15.

It's been some entertaining snooker in the first 16 frames of the first

:00:16.:00:22.

day's play of the world final. APPLAUSE

:00:23.:01:19.

Terrific stuff! Some great potting by both players. Superb safety.

:01:20.:01:28.

48. The last red disappears and Joe Johnson, without a point on the

:01:29.:01:58.

scoreboard. And so clinically, Steve Davis

:01:59.:02:31.

white-washing Joe Johnson in our final frame of the day, but Joe

:02:32.:02:38.

Johnson takes the honours. He has drawn level over the 16 frames of

:02:39.:02:43.

the first day's play, and they share the match, 8 frames each.

:02:44.:03:05.

APPLAUSE , they shake hands and the brilliant

:03:06.:03:16.

81, but it's all square, 8 frames each. So at 8 #23r5i78s all, this

:03:17.:03:24.

was not the lap of honour for Davis had many people had predicted. This

:03:25.:03:28.

was very tight and very delicately poised. So in frame 17 we go. E lap

:03:29.:03:48.

And a rather surprising miss by Steve there. Just a little twist of

:03:49.:03:54.

his hand as he went through with the shot.

:03:55.:04:30.

Well, Joe would want to be on this red as straight as pock possible, in

:04:31.:04:38.

order he can run through for the black.

:04:39.:04:44.

Tried to leave himself an angle in which to take one of 3 reds, into

:04:45.:04:50.

the left-hand corner pocket, he may have finished a little too straight.

:04:51.:05:28.

16, 17. Set Joe up here for every chance to take the frame.

:05:29.:06:21.

And that sounded like a kick and sure enough... Giving the ball a

:06:22.:06:28.

clean. Unfortunately, he is away from the

:06:29.:06:38.

side cushion and just the black now is going to put Joe safe.

:06:39.:06:52.

37 points ahead with a possible 35 still on.

:06:53.:06:57.

38. So Johnson, the underdog, 9 frames to 8 in front. And you know,

:06:58.:07:09.

on the very, very smallest of the margins, titles are won and lost.

:07:10.:07:13.

Just take a look at what happens in frame 18.

:07:14.:07:30.

Well, that is a cruel fluke and one sympathy is with Steve there. That

:07:31.:07:50.

really hurts. And at such a vital stage.

:07:51.:08:17.

Reason why he shouldn't. The yellow is not as easy as he planned. But he

:08:18.:08:24.

is back in perfect position. So Joe goes two ahead. Needs the

:08:25.:08:43.

blue and the pink. APPLAUSE

:08:44.:09:12.

So Joe gets the fluke of the final so far, and makes it 10-8. I got my

:09:13.:09:20.

luck in the final. I watched it back afterwards and there was certain

:09:21.:09:26.

times where the lucks went with me and I won important frames with that

:09:27.:09:32.

a little bit of rung in. Maybe that affected him. So 25 ahead now, Joe.

:09:33.:09:42.

35 points remaining. So we are in this situation again, where with who

:09:43.:09:46.

takes this red could very well be the winner.

:09:47.:11:01.

Well that rather poor effort by Joe, he might pay for that.

:11:02.:11:18.

APPLAUSE Well, by recall that statement.

:11:19.:11:33.

He is having the run-in, but you got to take it when it comes your way.

:11:34.:11:44.

Steve, of course, has the problem of not only hitting the red, but trying

:11:45.:11:51.

to keep it safe. It would be disaster for him, should Joe have a

:11:52.:11:54.

chance at a pot. So now, 31 points ahead and this red

:11:55.:12:14.

will make Joe compare Tivoli save. What a session this has been. Quite

:12:15.:13:12.

unbelievable, and one in fairness to Steve, one must say that as well as

:13:13.:13:18.

Joe has played, and my word he has played well - he certainly had the

:13:19.:13:26.

running but then, one can say he has overcome the big occasion while

:13:27.:13:28.

nobody thought he could. So it's great credit to him. So without

:13:29.:13:39.

question of doubt, Joe is going to take all four frames in this first

:13:40.:13:45.

session to lead by 12 frames to 8, and that gives Steve quite a task.

:13:46.:13:54.

So 12 frames to 8 it is. And I just remember thinking, well he's

:13:55.:13:56.

outplaying me. And I really struggled. I tried as hard as I

:13:57.:14:00.

could to get back every session. 25. Joe Johnson.

:14:01.:14:10.

APPLAUSE Well, obviously, Johnson thought

:14:11.:14:23.

that plant was on. But he could regret playing it now.

:14:24.:15:49.

Noticeable after coming on after the interval, Steve staying down that a

:15:50.:15:57.

little bit longer on some shot. Walking around and just thinking

:15:58.:15:58.

positive thoughts. His record since he came into the

:15:59.:16:09.

professional game, has been just unbelievable, really. I feel this is

:16:10.:16:14.

probably the greatest challenge he has ever had to face.

:16:15.:17:18.

Just the pink now to leave Joe Johnson needing snookers in this

:17:19.:17:21.

frame. With that break of 52, Steve Davis

:17:22.:19:01.

closes to 3 frames behind. Johnson still leading 12 frames to 9. Well

:19:02.:19:09.

the next 2 were shared, so now it's 13 frames to 10 in the under dog,

:19:10.:19:14.

Johnson's favour. Steve to may, no score. A lot of pressure on this

:19:15.:19:16.

shot. It was indeed, no position

:19:17.:19:38.

guaranteed if he got it. Every possibility of leaving a very good

:19:39.:19:40.

opening for his opponent if he missed it.

:19:41.:20:08.

15. That was a nice shot by Steve, clearings that red, so after potting

:20:09.:21:42.

the black, the black won't be available in both corner pockets.

:21:43.:21:49.

And I'm certain that a nice big break here, would be a nice boost

:21:50.:21:53.

for him. Yes, if Davis can win this frame,

:21:54.:22:18.

perhaps with this visit to the table, a deficit of two frames going

:22:19.:22:22.

into the final session would be recoverable, obviously. If he were

:22:23.:22:29.

to lose it, the deficit of four would take some retrieving.

:22:30.:24:01.

Just this pink and one more red... Would leave the frame safe.

:24:02.:25:00.

And a good performance this, by Steve. Certainly looked to be on the

:25:01.:25:06.

ropes at 1 stage. I said earlier that this was one of

:25:07.:25:21.

the his great challenges, mainly because he has not played his best,

:25:22.:25:25.

whether it's due to the pressure or what have you.

:25:26.:25:29.

When he came from behind against Willie Thorne in the UK, Willie was

:25:30.:25:37.

playing brilliantly, but so was Steve. So this is a bit different.

:25:38.:25:43.

And in this frame, showing he can stand up to it.

:25:44.:25:48.

Question, when he was 12-8 down, this world final looked as if it

:25:49.:26:09.

could be slipping away from him. But he's sure of winning this frame now.

:26:10.:26:16.

So it will be 3 out of four for him. Since mid-session interval.

:26:17.:27:07.

Davis's third century of this final. Following his consecutive efforts of

:27:08.:27:26.

108, and 107 in the third and fourth frames.

:27:27.:27:30.

APPLAUSE So, would that break of 100 Steve

:27:31.:27:41.

Davis, he takes the last frame of the afternoon, but it's Joe Johnson

:27:42.:27:45.

who takes a 13 frames to 11 lead into the final session. What a

:27:46.:27:52.

match! And it's the underdog, 33-year-old Joe Johnson who led

:27:53.:27:58.

going into the final session, 13-11. This is a man who until this point

:27:59.:28:04.

hasn't won a single ranking title. And here he was, leading one of the

:28:05.:28:11.

iconic players of the 1980s. With the Yorkshire crowd beginning to

:28:12.:28:16.

sniff an upset, they got firmly behind their man, Johnson surged

:28:17.:28:19.

ahead even further. It's Steve to play, frame 28.

:28:20.:28:34.

Well, would you believe that! ? And that is so unlike Steve. And a gift

:28:35.:29:47.

of a chance here for Joe. Couldn't ask for more than this.

:29:48.:30:04.

Well I never like to use the word "pressure" too loosely, but surely

:30:05.:30:10.

that's the reason that Steve missed the black. So Joe now 25 points

:30:11.:30:20.

ahead. And without any problems, he should clear the colours. And Steve

:30:21.:30:30.

was picking up his rest to say that will do, but he's put it back again.

:30:31.:30:38.

25 points behind, 22 on the table. And that frame indeed went to

:30:39.:30:44.

Johnson. He is two frames away from the most incredible of victories at

:30:45.:30:49.

the Crucible. 16 frames to 12 the front.

:30:50.:31:17.

REFEREE: Foul. And could be a free now, it's not quite.

:31:18.:33:19.

There's ?112,000, ?72,000 to the winner, and ?42,000 to the loser.

:33:20.:33:33.

I think his eyebrows were applauding the shot before he got it.

:33:34.:33:42.

He was just playing as though he was in a club handicap.

:33:43.:33:59.

Doesn't seem to have any pressure at all on him.

:34:00.:34:23.

And of course, four open reds would be, could be enough for Joe.

:34:24.:34:28.

Wouldn't need to bother with the two on the side cushion.

:34:29.:34:34.

His agony is turning into a nightmare.

:34:35.:35:14.

So joe now 29 points in front. So just needs 14 points off these two

:35:15.:35:20.

open reds... So just this red... And the blue,

:35:21.:35:51.

pink or black would be sufficient to leave Steve needing snookers.

:35:52.:36:09.

Bradford's Joe Johnson, rewriting the history books.

:36:10.:36:24.

APPLAUSE I was expecting him to go 17, 13,

:36:25.:36:36.

14, 15. I may get over the line in one of them. That relaxed me. I

:36:37.:36:38.

expected him to do it. Here he is, on the brink, just

:36:39.:36:45.

wanting 1 frame. So a chance for Steve here, but a

:36:46.:38:57.

pressure shot. And I think that's the difference

:38:58.:40:38.

with Steve, normally, would have seen him knock in red in by the side

:40:39.:40:42.

of the blue, and been sure of position.

:40:43.:41:10.

Joe Johnson has learnt a great deal during the championship. He have

:41:11.:41:18.

always known him to be a terrific potter, but his safety play has been

:41:19.:41:20.

impeccable. And Steve refuses pots that I

:41:21.:42:01.

couldn't believe he would refuse. Yes, he is at it again, and the

:42:02.:42:14.

crowd are loving it. Well, I couldn't believe that Steve

:42:15.:42:43.

refused two reds he had a chance of there. He played a safety shot and

:42:44.:42:46.

of course, Joe, back in again now. APPLAUSE

:42:47.:43:24.

And of course, when the pressure's on, wanting one frame for the

:43:25.:43:30.

championship, nothing better than a few points lead early on in the

:43:31.:43:32.

frame, to give you that bit of confidence.

:43:33.:43:56.

22, Joe Johnson. APPLAUSE

:43:57.:44:30.

And again, Steve not getting the right contact on the reds there. And

:44:31.:45:41.

now, just a safety shot left. Well that certainly looked in the

:45:42.:47:14.

pocket. Quite regularly he finds that baulk

:47:15.:47:30.

cushion. And John that, shot, surely, says it

:47:31.:48:38.

all. Yes, but that is probably the wildest shot I have seen Steve play

:48:39.:48:44.

in 3 or 4 years. He through his cue as that one. -- at that one.

:48:45.:48:53.

Those little touches make so much difference.

:48:54.:49:30.

No, just a screw for the pink into the opposite middle.

:49:31.:49:55.

I don't think the pink will pot so it gives Steve a chance here. The

:49:56.:49:59.

pink going on the black spot. 20, Steve Davis. Another miss by

:50:00.:51:12.

Steve! Looked all set. But now just five points in front. And one can

:51:13.:51:16.

only think the pressure is getting to Steve. And of course, misses like

:51:17.:51:23.

that with just increase Joe's confidence.

:51:24.:51:47.

And treating it as another game of snooker.

:51:48.:52:07.

And Joe will be, I'm sure, thinking now, all I've got to do is hold

:52:08.:52:26.

myself together, and the choif is mine -- championship's mine.

:52:27.:52:37.

There's enough reds all around the centre of the table.

:52:38.:53:11.

Obviously, too straight on the red in the middle, will want to be the

:53:12.:53:14.

other side of the blue. 14.

:53:15.:53:35.

And he'll certainly never have a better chance than this of becoming

:53:36.:54:02.

world champion. 14 points in front. -- 15 points in front.

:54:03.:54:11.

And Steve must be becoming resigned now to becoming runner-up for the

:54:12.:54:15.

second year running. What a tournament to win for your

:54:16.:54:32.

first one - the World Championship. And Joe, quite rightly, not rushing

:54:33.:54:37.

at all this break. Can obviously see this is the one.

:54:38.:55:03.

By taking the green there, of course, it means... He needs both

:55:04.:55:14.

reds, red and a colour and the last red to clinch this vital frame.

:55:15.:55:27.

Just 17 days ago, he was a rank outsider.

:55:28.:55:48.

Steve just waiting in his chair. I'm sure... Brilliant potting from this

:55:49.:56:11.

fella from Bradford. Nothing to stop him now.

:56:12.:56:11.

CHEERING Not quite! It must be said, he had

:56:12.:56:23.

the run of the balls, but it takes nothing away from his brilliant

:56:24.:56:24.

potting. And still thoroughly enjoying every

:56:25.:56:44.

moment of it. The crowd here at the Crucible are going mad for

:56:45.:56:46.

Bradford's the Joe Johnson. A most remarkable world final, I

:56:47.:57:02.

have ever seen. And Joe Johnson defeats Steve Davis, 18 frames to

:57:03.:57:06.

12, as the capacity crowd go completely mad! The shock of the

:57:07.:57:18.

1385 final and how I felt afterwards, it was nowhere near the

:57:19.:57:25.

same playing Joe. You have outplayed me, 18 to 12, what can I say?

:57:26.:57:30.

Desperately disappointed. I got beaten.

:57:31.:57:39.

The emotions I felt, was just... Fantastic. Elation. There was no

:57:40.:57:49.

words that could explain it. All the world champions feel the same

:57:50.:57:54.

feeling. Is that you have finally achieved the ambition of that you

:57:55.:57:55.

have always hoped for. This was by any standard, a seismic

:57:56.:58:11.

sporting surprise. A 150-to-1 outsider. Joe Johnson, reaching the

:58:12.:58:19.

pinnacle of his sport having never won a match at the Crucible that

:58:20.:58:24.

year. 12 months later, he was back in the final again, in the defence

:58:25.:58:29.

of his title, in a carbon copy showdown against Steve Davis. On

:58:30.:58:37.

that occasion, the Nugget prevailed. Joe Johnson is living proof that the

:58:38.:58:40.

sport, every under dog has their day. And in Joe's case, fully

:58:41.:58:45.

deserved as well. It was fantastic to list the trophy, take it back to

:58:46.:58:49.

my club and everyone have the picture with the trophy. I mean, it

:58:50.:58:53.

was quite special.
