Their heroes, the champions. This is astonishing! Hibernian are

relegated. Caledonian axes are promoted.

The chance to win the cup for Aberdeen. And a memorable season has

a silver lining. And we are back in the room. Good

evening. It has been an incredible summer of sport and despite the

weather, it continues. The brand-new season is back here with you right

the way through to the start of summer 2015 with your regular Sunday

night pics of Premiership action right here on Sportscene. Now with

added championship as well. Some things are already so good that they

do not need changing. Two men with us tonight to know their way around

the nooks and crannies of Scottish football. Michael Stewart, the

former captain of hearts and St Mirren is striker, Steven Thomson. A

huge amount to get through tonight. We start this new season at

Pittodrie. Aberdeen and Dundee United hoping to build on positive

campaigns last time around. United looking for a seamless regression

after Ryan Gauld sent off to pastures new. Aberdeen hoping to

bounce back after being knocked out in midweek by Ray al Sociedad. --

Real Sociedad. David Goodwillie, preferred to Adam

Rooney. Three quarters of the Dundee defence

had not played together competitively.

What about that for a flick from Taylor?! That would have been some

goal if that had come off. Taylor, in for Anderson today. Armstrong, he

was to reflect for the majority of last season.

Taylor has got himself in bother. It is 1-0! It is a shocker from an

Aberdeen point of view. What is Taylor thinking of? He has not seen

Ryan Tao, who still had work to do. He stroked it home. -- Ryan Dow.

Aberdeen looking to make a response. The post prevents Aberdeen from

drawing level. Good work from Robson. Unconvincing from the

attacker. What about that for a pass?

Mackay-Steven! It is two! The first half is a which time. -- stoppage

time. Dundee United double up. A wonderful ball from midfield. There

was nothing to save Aberdeen there. It is all about the past. The wait

was perfect. Mackay-Steven with a very fine finish.

This could be on for Aberdeen. It looked like it took a deflection.

Dundee United have made it so difficult for Aberdeen.

McGinn, trying to apply pressure. Rooney goes down. Goalkick. Thumbs

up from Cierzniak, who would have been quite nervous. And ball from

Morris. Aberdeen have another and all the shout turned down. It

clearly hit his hand. The one thing Aberdeen struggled

with last season was scoring goals. Particularly here.

A very positive run here. United trying to put the lead on this.

Erskine! It is three. And it is a bit of a hammering for Aberdeen.

Chris Erskine, he went back to Partick Thistle last season to

rediscover himself. He has a point to prove today. And this is a fine

way to go about starting that. It is 3-0 for Dundee United. There was a

lot of tired legs out there. We have to be better than that. It is not

the norm for us, that kind of performance. We have to look at the

reasons and analyse it. We have to look at selection. The players need

to look at themselves. We need to be better. For me, to keep a clean

sheet against a dangerous side, better. For me, to keep a clean

sheet against I am absolutely delighted. It was a stunning

performance. I'd guess Aberdeen totally outdone by classic football

from United. The second goal especially. Ciftci did unbelievably

well. His feet were excellent but watch Mackay-Steven ticking off. A

pass from Ciftci was incredible. He gets up to 22 mph, which is just

under my record of 26 mph. It was a counterattacking goal. I thought it

was 25, your record? You are right, great counterattack play. Stretching

the Aberdeen defence. It was a great support run. Sliding into the

corner. You would have expected a lot of guys to lash at it but he

controlled it. And I'd guess a lot of people would have looked at the

departure of Ryan Gauld and Andrew Robertson and think that we can --

that would weaken them but it seems like a seamless progression. Ryan

Gauld is obviously a huge talent but he did not play every week. Ryan Dow

was playing a lot. Of course he will be missed but we to week, I do not

think it will be as big as we are thinking. Andrew Roberts and he

could be a big mess. , Townsend, he is a useful player, and a think he

will add to the team. -- Conor. He spoke today, the manager, but the

exertions against Real Sociedad. Did it make a difference? Think there

was a slight angle first, but do not take anything away from Dundee

United. That is an incredible performance. To keep their first

clean sheet since December last year and win 3-0, impressive. A lot of

onus on the sides being the ones that will push Celtic the most. Do

you see it like that? Do not discount Motherwell, who have been

the best of the discount Motherwell, who have been

the rest for a number of years. They will be challenging, no doubt. There

was one other Premiership match in Dingwall. St Johnstone began life

with out their star striker. They take on Ross County, a side who have

taken on a lot of new players. A quintet of every chance for Ross

County. -- debutants. St Johnstone's bottom line may have

increased at the expense of the former line -- forward line, but

Maclean and all has the potential to be a winning partnership. -- O

Haller ran. Somehow, St Johnstone survive. Great

start from the goalkeeper. It was a good ball from Frazer Wright.

O'Halloran is a way! He scores! . Ross County could not clear the

lines. Here was David Mackay to play tin. Nice footwork from O'Halloran,

two goals in 19 last season. The goalkeeper may have been out of

position but he did not complain. Not on for the crossbar. McManus

took it away. -- knocked on. Carey signed a new deal with Ross County.

Great play. 20 of them in the shot. -- plenty of them. Wotherspoon with

a free kick. The header comes in! It's a goal.

Steven MacLean. A deft header. Three minutes into the second half, they

extended their lead. A diving header.

There is a little mix-up there. Guess is available. -- Kiss. Jervis!

On his Ross County debut, his first goal. A great header. Quality. And

Jake Jervis, who played for Portsmouth last season, scores.

That looked a little clumsy from Jervis. Scobbie and Jervis coming

together. Deflected by Scott Brown. Plenty of

pace for Graham Carey. We lost the Game 2-1, but I think we

controlled large aspects of the game. St Johnstone were pinned back,

and we kept on trying to get that second goal. I do not think that we

deserved to take nothing from the game. I think a draw would have been

fair. For us to come up here after our defeat, it shows the measurable

slabs. A great win for St Johnstone. Ross County have brought in a lot of

foreign players. Do you see the same thing happening again? Last year, it

took time, but that the end of the year they found form. -- at the end

of the year. I think the addition of Carey and Kiss will help the

balance. I think it will not take them that long this time. Michael

O'Halloran and Stephen Mayne with the goals today.

But they came up with the goods. The two guys you have mentioned, great

players. Any team is going to miss someone who has put in 27 goals. But

I think it is a plus for St Johnstone, their strength is that

they are a strong collective unit. May will be a unit but -- nest but

as a unit, they will score goals and I think they will be quite good. Was

it was inevitable that he would leave this summer? I think so. The

club has to capitalise all stop but he has been sensational. I have been

a fan of his. He is irreplaceable because there is not somebody out

there who will score 27 goals for you. There they will not be able to

replace him. And it was not just his goals, it was his other attributes.

But well done on his move. St Johnstone lay Celtic on Wednesday

night. A big transfer news in terms of them this weekend. A ?10 million

sale to Southampton. There was of them this weekend. A ?10 million

?10 million is a lot of money for a goalkeeper. I think getting a move

down into England was something that would happen inevitably but when you

look at the fact that they have brought in Craig Gordon, if he is

fit a potentially, he is as good as Fraser Forster. But the big thing is

that if he can stay fit. Given what has happened to Celtic Tom the

Champions League, I guess fans will now want to see money invested.

Given a second bite at the cherry, it is important that they get the

chance to add to the squad. I think we will see that happening before

the window closes. Interesting to watch. The Premiership began

yesterday afternoon with Dundee in the top flight after winning the

championship last season. Paul Barclay had used the summer to ring

the changes well and truly am bringing in plenty of players with

Premiership experience and targeting not just survival but a top six

finish. John Barnes was at the park. A proud day for Dundee as Gavin Rae

unfurls the Scottish championship flag in recognition of Dundee's

title success. They make one change from last week's when and that sees

James Mick Paik make a competitive debut. -- McPake.

Excellent goalkeeping. , Labour challenger. He is frustrated because

the referee points to the spot. Dundee have the penalty. And Gary

Harkins has the opportunity against his own club. The first goal of the

new season in the Premiership. And it comes from the right boot of Gary

Harkins. Excellent finish. Craig Samson went the wrong way. A chance

for a leveller. It bounced down and away to safety, eventually cleared

by McPake. But what a chance this was for the former England youth

international to level things up. Obadeyi again. The referee right up

with play. Just outside the box. Craig Slater, or to strike! -- what

a strike. Kilmarnock are level with a top drawer finish. Craig Slater,

one of the up and coming Scottish young midfielders. Excellent curling

shot, deceiving Leatherman. -- Letheren.

It breaks for Tankulic. Saved by Samson. Once more, positive play

from Dundee. The German striker going close. Into the third minute

of stoppage time, and this set piece could win it. Peter McDonald! Back

off the bar. And that is full-time. It ends one point apiece. I was

pleased. That Italy the second half, there were great chances. I thought

we dominated the play in terms of the possession and the chances.

Overall, it was a good game of football. I think there were

encouraging signs. The first half, we were really dangerous. The second

half, we are under a lot of pressure. The way we defended, the

boys showed resilience. A rousing return to the top flight for Dundee

but Alan Johnson, the Kilmarnock manager, critical of Gary Harkins,

saying he went down too easily. And he has the reputation of doing so?

I'm not sure if he has a reputation of that. It is a clear penalty kick.

I think the defender was rash. No reason to challenge Gary because he

is moving away from goal. The referee is in a great position. For

me, a clear penalty. Well taken. To be honest, I'd agree with Tom even

though he has a tendency to big up his former players. The defender

there, Harkins is going away from goal, so you just need to stand your

ground. This soon -- as soon as you dangle anything, he is going to take

it. A stunning free kick from Craig Slater. Paul Hartley am critical of

James McPake for giving away the free kick. Is that you review? From

a manager's perspective, he has a reputation for sliding tackles. I do

not know what he's trying to do. To take nothing away from Craig

Slater, this is a great free kick. When you see this from behind the

goals, the goalkeeper steps to his right. As soon as you do that, you

will never get the other way. He thinks it is going to the right

post. His momentum goes there but then he goes to the other post. What

do you think of Dundee this season? They have come up from the

championship and a lot of people will think that survival is the

thing but Paul Hartley is talking about top six. He has made great

signings, players with SPL experiences. I think Dundee are a

bonus to the league because they have such great support. The work

8000 at that game yesterday. He is talking about playing expansive

football. I think they will be a great addition. Hamilton Academical

began life back in the Premiership with a visit from Inverness

Caledonian Thistle. They have upset the odds before. How did the

Hamilton fans feel ahead of this Premiership adventure? We are

looking for a top four finish. We have a great young team. Seven or

eight will do me. That will be fine. If we play our best, top six. Come

on! Axes' last game was a home defeat. Back among the elite. --

Accies. Williams, onto Mackay. Back onto

Williams. Almost a perfect start for

Caledonian Thistle. Ryan Christie had more time than he thought. He

has to be careful. Billy Mackay has scored. Good play from Hamilton

Accies. It was a simple long ball. No danger. The goalkeeper was short.

Billy Mackay helped himself to his first goal of the season. Draper, to

Williams. Here is a chance for two. Saved by the keeper. Caley Thistle

are two ahead inside 25 minutes. Axes give the ball away. Great play.

-- Hamilton Accies. It is a tap in for Ryan Christie. Gillespie, drying

forward. -- driving forward. Hamilton Accies are unhappy at the

challenge. It looked like as in re got the ball away, he jumped into

A great run. He gets the shot away. As all good goalkeepers do, he

breaks the defence. -- borates. A comfortable position. They need to

Great play from Doran. Watkins was there. If he had drilled that

forwards, it would be three. It is interesting to produce these young

players. The quicker they can pick it up and managed to get a handle on

the level they are playing at, hopefully, the quicker we can move

up the league. I would have liked it if Billy stayed this season with us.

But you take the ball as it comes. Whatever is best for Billy and the

club, I'm sure that is going to happen eventually. Plenty of players

take to social media after their performances in the Premiership.

Ryan Christie, from Inverness, no difference. He says, buzzing after

the two nil win. Legs in pieces. Get me home. A big player with a big

future. Definitely. I saw him laterally last season. He came off

the bench a couple of times and within a couple of minutes you could

tell that he was a player. I know that John, one of his favourites

that you see today, he is all over the pitch. He is all over the pitch.

He takes up a great position. And they think he a bright future. They

were raving about him in the papers today. The defending from Hamilton

Accies was not the best way to start the season. I think with this one,

they had a couple of opportunities to clear the danger. And in the end,

he tried to bring it back to the goalkeeper. But you have to give

Billy Mackay the credit. It is an opportunity, but if you're going to

make mistakes, then you are going to be punished. And he is exploiting

the spaces. Yes. The thing is, with Billy Mackay, he wants to move

forward and commit his defenders. He is attacking the space. And this one

here. Huge amounts of space. You can see Inverness, bad defending. They

need to exploit it. And that is the problem. Hitting the crossbar

throughout the game, Inverness. They wanted to run forward. Do not see a

lot of that. Christie runs into space. The creates space for

himself. Hamilton, the defending, the left-back cannot move to the

ball. It was a good ball from Christie, but that is one of the

things for him, to play in that area of the pitch, you need vision.

Hamilton Accies are a lot of people's favourites for relegation.

Your pick? No comment. Motherwell finished a best of the rest last

season with virtually the last play of the ball. They kicked off this

campaign minus Steven Thomson. Motherwell, without a lot of

important players. A debut for the win. -- Lee

The St Mirren player coach maintaining he got the ball. The

referee thinks otherwise, and it is yellow. St Mirren looking to start

something. There is a busting run from midfield. Options inside. He

seizes the shot wide. Maclean and Marwood were serious options there.

APPLAUSE A dream debut on the opening day of

the premiership season for the 20-year-old. He kept on going. He

hooked in the rebound after Ainsworth's shot had been pounded

out by Kello. Kenny Maclean. It is a great run, and Callum Ball blasts

the chance over the top. Well, St Mirren cannot say they didn't have

chances here, but, still, one goal down. Good run against Sutton.

Sutton hits the deck. The free kick is certainly given. Greg looks

concerned, and that is why, it is a second yellow card for Goodwin. He

is sent off again. And that is what the officials didn't like.

Maclean's header. Ross Caldwell. A great shot on the turn. A really

good effort from the forward youngster. And it was matched by a

flying save from 12 -- Twardzik. Having the last ten days we have

had, we could name a full squad until ten minutes before

kick-off... All in all, we need to do better. We still have a couple of

places to bring in, as well, and that will make us stronger. I am

delighted with the performance. We created enough chances to win a

couple of games. The way they passed the ball, went about their business,

almost in every sense, apart from finishing, I thought we were

excellent. It is very strange. Every time you are on this show, he seems

to be in hot water, Jim Goodwin. His timing is perfect, isn't it? What is

his defence? You could argue that he gets the ball. His momentum, once he

gets into the tackle, he takes it into the player. From this angle, it

doesn't look too bad. But unfortunately for Jim... That is

another one, isn't it? I think so, and the picture is quite clear. Only

Jim can answer why he did it. What you think, that is indefensible,

isn't it? -- what do you think. He has caught him with his forearm. You

could argue about the first one, he has got a bit of the ball, it might

not have been a booking, but you could equally argue that the second

one could have been a straight red. Two gallows was fair enough. You

just cannot understand what he is thinking about. -- two yellow cards.

It's not the first occasion, there have been numerous, and only can

tell you what he did it. Not the best, but a win is a win. Stuart

McCall admitted Motherwell didn't play very well, but they got the

goal. What about Kello here? He has got to map a good hands on it, and

of power on it, but he needs to push it into the wide areas. -- he has

got two hands on it, and power on it. When he reacts quickly, the ball

is behind him. He controls it in the bottom corner, and it's a good

finish. He had a good debut. It was tough on St Mirren, you would say

that. We have had a really positive preseason. We have entered

confidently. We have a vibrant, energetic squad with a really good

spirit. We were full of confidence, we played like the home team,

created numerous chances, but we lost the game. It's something we

need to address. The difference between a top six and bottom six

team is the difference between winning and losing. They said they

did not play well, but if we are going to get our way up and out of

the league, we have got to get better. How is it going? Slowly but

surely, we are getting there. We have a hugely intriguing looking

championship coming up. It was a packed out Ibrox this afternoon,

Rangers versus Hearts. Mixed emotions pre-match at Ibrox. Joy

with the unfurling of the flag as the league one champions are looking

for three in a row promotions. Ally McCoist and company on the way back

to the top flight. But memories, as well, about the late Sandy Jardine

Stand a lot of his former team-mates here to see the Govan stand renamed

starts against his old team. Hearts are without Patterson, that is the

only change from the challenge cup, with Jordan McGhee starting.

score. Great defending from Hearts, they just didn't want this to go in.

It is grabbed by Neil Alexander, but maybe at a painful cost. Clashing

with his own defender. Ozturk. And the former Rangers goalkeeper has

taken a really sore one here. Both sets of support are sympathetic as

Scott Gallacher takes over. Lewis Macleod's free kick. Diving

header attempt. That was Zaliukas having his shot blocked by Ozturk.

He got himself in the way. In goes Nicky Law. Prince Buaben. He and

Gomis have been hugely influential for Hearts. And he continues his run

forward. Sam Nicholson. Tries to grab it around -- drag it around

Cammy Bell. He fails as Hearts looked to tie up all three points.

Lee Wallace, floated atop the Chris Boyd. There is Kenny Miller. Nicky

Law! CHEERING Squares the game in stoppage time.

Just as it looked as if Rangers were down and out Nicky Law strikes.

Gallacher got a good hand that, but he didn't keep it out. And it is

1-1. Straight from kick-off. Hearts threatening. Osman Sow! Sensational

finish at Ibrox. The equaliser followed immediately by the third

goal of the game. Hearts newly recruited striker has a quick

impact. That's a brilliant finish. -- Hearts's newly recruited. Rangers

will have their thoughts about it, but it is 2-1 Hearts. Wallace

surging forward, is there and the game? Kenny Miller! And he cannot

hit the target. And it looks like defeat for Rangers on the opening

weekend of the championship season. It was great, you know. I thought

our players showed strength and character. To get a last minute. I

thought let's be strong, get the point, but they showed great

character. It is going to stand them in good stead for the rest of the

season. The season would be defined from this game. We will stop pairing

for the next one. You were there, what was the atmosphere like? The

Sandy Jardine Stand being named, a packed house at Ibrox, but it was a

second-tier match. You have players on each side, some played for

Rangers, some played for Hearts, vice versa, was it a strange

situation? It was. It was championship, but it had all of the

look of a top league game. A lot of spectacle. A lot of action. I think

the right team picked up the three points. Danny Wilson, former Rangers

player, good performance from him and a vital goal. He did perform

well. This was a good goal. This was a great feed. If you look at the

replay, there is good movement from Wilson. If you watch him coming off

the back post, and watch Clark in front of Cammy Bell come he blocks

him. You might think it has floated in and the goalkeeper should come

for it, but clearly worked on it to block the goalkeeper and a good move

from Danny Wilson. Steven Thompson there, and Osman Sow looks like he

will be a big character. He is Swedish, and he got the winning goal

today. He took the ball ever so well, didn't he? His path is ever so

good. The first touch is excellent and it is a tremendous finish. --

his path. When he scored the goal, Danny McGregor had just come on that

second. Foster had gone off injured. He hadn't really got himself over to

the right back position in time. When Hearts broke with the ball.

Yes. He was still making his way across. Sam Nicholson came inside

him. Really good touch. There is definitely inordinate that he hadn't

been set and he wasn't concentrating. A quick update on

Neil Alexander, she had a nasty injury. Looks like a suspected

fractured cheekbone, so he could be out for a couple of months. -- that

there is definitely an idea that he hadn't been set. I think it is going

to be very close, very tight division. I think it will be

Rangers. Plenty of clubs in the second-tier, despite the terrible

form last season Hibernian were set to fall further down. And there was

some serious play-off pain last season. The Hibernian fans cannot

believe it. They are going down, a new definition of punishment for

these fans. There were demonstrations after the game.

Developments in the east of the country with the sacking of Terry

Butcher. The new Hibernian manager, Alan Stubbs, is looking to get

recently relegated Hibernian back to the premiership as soon as possible.

Here we are gone eight weeks on, new management, new players at Easter

Road. The fans confident they can bounce back straight back into the

premiership? We need a striker. Definitely a holding midfielder. We

are not going the second, we are going straight the first. Rangers

are there for the taking. Everybody is 100% behind Alan Stubbs. Be

afraid, Rangers, be afraid, Gloucester, we are coming to get!

CHUCKLES It was the opening goal which gave

them a scare -- it was the opening corner which gave them a scare, it

came off the crossbar. A header from close range. A home debut goal for

the former Falkirk and Dundee United hit man. I's second came from a

rather unusual source. Mark Oxley's long kick out left by the Livingston

defence, only for the ball to take one bounce and end up in the back of

the net. -- Hibernian's second. Not often do you see a goalkeeper

celebrating. Despair for Livingston's goalkeeper. Liam Craig

almost made it three. This time, though, Jamieson came out on top.

The home side were continuing to make chances. L

this time he blasted over. Livingston came back into the game.

Mark Oxley have to act quickly to deny Jacobs. Then David Gray was the

home hero, clearing a shot which was destined to end up in the net. Into

the second half, and Livingston pulled one back. Jacobs's shot

tipped onto the crossbar. But it was put home from close range. A set

piece from the Livingston training ground, Jacobs's effort saved by

Mark Oxley, but nothing he can do about Gallagher's rebound.

Livingston did have a chance for an equaliser. Mullins's effort saved by

Mark Oxley, allowing Alan Stubbs's side to get off to a winning start

in the campaign. It is fair to say, last season we may have drew that

game or lost it. For me, it's a fantastic result today. Pretty good

that we showed the character we did, passing from start to finish. To get

ourselves back into the game, you know, it speaks volumes for the

players. We ended up losing by a fluke goal. It was just a routine

kit. As soon as it went, I knew it was big, but I didn't expect that.

It's my first goal. More reason why I went as mad as I did. Football can

be such a cruel game, but also hilarious, it has to be said. A

nightmare moment, look away, Darren, if you are watching. What a goal by

Mark Oxley. I have only ever seen it once before. I was playing at

Arbroath, and there was a 120 mph winds, the goalkeeper kicked it

straight in, it didn't even bounce. Bit of a freak goal, but he has won

more than me. Joint top scorer so far this season. What about

Jamieson? It is a freak goal. Mark Oxley is the joint top goal-scorer,

in a couple of months time that could be a worry. What did you make

of the strip? A bit strange, I'm not too sure. It does not look like a

Hibernian strip. Better than the St Mirren strip? No comment. CHUCKLES

After all of the doom and gloom, the Hibernian fans seem to be behind

Alan Stubbs. They could not do any worse. I think he's put a breath of

fresh air into the club. The fans, the players, think everybody is

buying into what he is trying to do, and long may that continue. Will

they get back next season? It's difficult, because Rangers are

strong with a lot of strength and depth. Hearts are looking like a

really good team. It'll be different for -- it'll be difficult for them,

but if the positivity can continue, you don't know what could happen. It

will be intriguing. Thank you very much indeed. That is almost did for

this evening. But you don't have to wait very long for the next

instalment of premiership action. It comes midweek. Celtic get the ball

rolling against St Johnstone. A hugely interesting game. Highlights
